Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Ready to keep counting in Swahili? Luna: I'm ready. Last time we got up to 15, right? Kumi na tano was fifteen. Lucas: Exactly. So today we go from 16 to 20. Let's start with sixteen: kumi na sita. Luna: Kumi na sita. That's ten and six. So sixteen. Lucas: Perfect. Now seventeen: kumi na saba. Luna: Kumi na saba. Saba means seven, right? Lucas: Yes, from earlier episodes. So kumi na saba is seventeen. Luna: Kumi na saba. Got it. Lucas: Now eighteen: kumi na nane. Luna: Kumi na nane. That's ten and eight. Easy pattern. Lucas: Yes. Nineteen: kumi na tisa. Luna: Kumi na tisa. Tisa is nine, so nineteen. Lucas: Great. And then twenty is a bit different: ishirini. Luna: Ishirini. That doesn't follow the kumi na pattern. Lucas: Right. Ishirini is a new word. So let's review all five. Repeat after me. Luna: Okay, I'll try. Kumi na sita, kumi na saba, kumi na nane, kumi na tisa, ishirini. Lucas: Excellent. Ooh, almost perfect. Let's do it once more slowly. Luna: Kumi na sita, kumi na saba, kumi na nane, kumi na tisa, ishirini. Lucas: There you go. Now let's use them in a little scene. Imagine you're at a market and you want to buy 16 apples. Luna: Nataka maapulo kumi na sita. Lucas: That's perfect. Or 18 bananas. Luna: Nataka ndizi kumi na nane. Lucas: And if someone asks how many, you say ishirini if it's twenty. Luna: Right. Ishirini. So twenty is a special word. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's do a quick callback. Remember from earlier episodes, we learned numbers 1 to 10, then 11 to 15. So now you know 1 to 20. Luna: That's awesome. I feel like I can count a lot of things now. Lucas: Absolutely.
