- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to May the Review be with you
- 0:02Speaker 1: with Nick and Joe. I'm Joe.
- 0:04Speaker 2: And I'm Nick.
- 0:05Speaker 3: And today we are talking about Lanterns, episodes three and four.
- 0:10Speaker 3: We're just coming off watching the fourth episode titled The Weenie.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Episode three is titled Outcast. So yeah, we just wanted
- 0:18Speaker 3: to kind of talk about we're midway through Lanterns now
- 0:21Speaker 3: and really awesome show so far.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I think we're really enjoying it.
- 0:25Speaker 3: The first two episodes we loved and I think episode
- 0:29Speaker 3: three was kind of like taking a step back from
- 0:32Speaker 3: a lot of the crazy action and all these other
- 0:36Speaker 3: plot building that was going on. And we actually got
- 0:39Speaker 3: a backstory for Jon Stewart and how he became this backup,
- 0:43Speaker 3: if you will, for Hal Jordan.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So yeah, Joe, kick us off. What are you thinking?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so actually what you're hitting on there with episode
- 0:52Speaker 1: three being our backstory, that's actually like a very formulaic,
- 0:58Speaker 1: way for comic book writers to write their comic stories.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Usually trades come in comic chapters of six, six to eight,
- 1:07Speaker 1: usually six. And the first two chapters, our first two
- 1:10Speaker 1: issues are stories where the action is going. And then
- 1:13Speaker 1: when we get to issue three, issue three is really
- 1:16Speaker 1: where we get background, backstory. And this show seems to
- 1:19Speaker 1: be following in that same exact comic formula, which is
- 1:23Speaker 1: Pretty cool. But yeah, Outcast gives us the backstory of
- 1:27Speaker 1: Jon Stewart Jr. And we get to learn a lot
- 1:30Speaker 1: more about Jon Stewart Sr. And the story of how
- 1:35Speaker 1: the ring was supposed to go to Jon Stewart Sr.
- 1:38Speaker 1: first before Hal Jordan. Now this is interesting for a
- 1:42Speaker 1: lot of different reasons. I think the first being that
- 1:45Speaker 1: Jon Stewart's backstory in the comics is never really explained
- 1:50Speaker 1: in great detail. And the showrunners were explaining in the
- 1:54Speaker 1: behind the scenes that this was really a chance to
- 1:58Speaker 1: define a more legitimate backstory for Jon Stewart than the
- 2:04Speaker 1: comics have otherwise given him. And I think it's really
- 2:06Speaker 1: interesting that they managed to intertwine Jon's father with the
- 2:14Speaker 1: origins of Hal Jordan, right? That Hal Jordan is really
- 2:18Speaker 1: the second choice. Now, I know that that must make
- 2:20Speaker 1: some Hal Jordan fans truthers out there very angry i
- 2:24Speaker 1: personally think it's a very interesting way to tell this
- 2:27Speaker 1: particular story and i think it's a great way to
- 2:32Speaker 1: intertwine john and hal's like story their destiny together right
- 2:37Speaker 1: to make these like two guys like their paths just
- 2:39Speaker 1: keep intertwining throughout their lives like this isn't even the
- 2:43Speaker 1: last time right before they meet as as uh as
- 2:47Speaker 1: beat cops together we'll see that in Jon Stewart Jr's journey,
- 2:51Speaker 1: Hal ends up interfering with his progress toward becoming a
- 2:55Speaker 1: Lantern down the road. So yeah, I think it was
- 2:59Speaker 1: a really interesting and ambitious way to tie these two
- 3:03Speaker 1: characters together even further than they already were, you know?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 3:07Speaker 3: And you just like brought up a huge question for
- 3:10Speaker 3: me with that explanation about how Hal was maybe not
- 3:15Speaker 3: the first choice. But Hal's predecessor was Sinestro, correct?
- 3:22Speaker 1: So his teacher, his teacher was Sinestro. Abansur was. That's right.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Was his predecessor.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Was his predecessor, but Abansur died.
- 3:31Speaker 3: But didn't he give, how does, see what I want
- 3:34Speaker 3: to know is like, how does that process work when
- 3:35Speaker 3: he's dying and he picks Hal? Like was Hal, but
- 3:39Speaker 3: wasn't Hal there when he died?
- 3:42Speaker 1: So Hal's there when he dies. However, as he's dying,
- 3:45Speaker 1: at least the way the story is told, the ring
- 3:48Speaker 1: is looking for candidates to replace Albin Sur as he
- 3:53Speaker 1: is dying. So if you remember in the Jon Stewart flashback,
- 3:57Speaker 1: we actually kind of get to see through Junior's eyes
- 4:00Speaker 1: that the ring brings his dad into a bubble and
- 4:04Speaker 1: asks him, are you afraid? Senior says yes. And then
- 4:07Speaker 1: it moves on toward other candidates, presumably more than just
- 4:11Speaker 1: John and Hal. Right. And Hal is just the first
- 4:13Speaker 1: person who said, I'm not afraid. Right.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So interesting. Okay.
- 4:18Speaker 3: There's just, it feels like a lot happening in the
- 4:20Speaker 3: moments where Abin Sur is dying. And it made me
- 4:23Speaker 3: kind of question like, you know, from the guardian that
- 4:26Speaker 3: we've met who is interviewing John, right?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Like, like we only have that guardian as an example.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Like what I'm saying is, I'm assuming, and we're assuming
- 4:37Speaker 3: that that's an actual guardian and not like some big
- 4:41Speaker 3: elaborate plot to trick the Stewart family.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh, right. Liana.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Cause there was a moment in.
- 4:49Speaker 3: The fourth episode where, and we're not, I don't want
- 4:51Speaker 3: to jump ahead, but in the fourth episode where it
- 4:52Speaker 3: was like, okay, if it's not Zoe and they're like,
- 4:55Speaker 3: it's Will Macon, but like, doesn't feel right. I was like,
- 4:59Speaker 3: Is this guardian who interviewed John, has been grooming him
- 5:01Speaker 3: his whole life, actually the Manhunter?
- 5:03Speaker 2: And it's just like all an act? Which I think
- 5:05Speaker 2: is a little far-fetched with what we know now.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Well, we had a guess in our last episode covering Lanterns,
- 5:12Speaker 1: episode one and two, of who the Manhunter was. And
- 5:15Speaker 1: the obvious answer was Will Macon, the person who is
- 5:19Speaker 1: overseeing the ranch, right? But our guess was actually Zoe,
- 5:22Speaker 1: his wife, is the Manhunter. And we'll get into... That
- 5:26Speaker 1: in a moment, as far as the revelations that we
- 5:29Speaker 1: got in episode four. But just to continue to press
- 5:31Speaker 1: episode three, we get our backstory on the Guardian, Liana,
- 5:35Speaker 1: interviewing Jon Stewart Jr. for the job. And, you know,
- 5:39Speaker 1: we come to find out that the Guardians approached Jon's mother,
- 5:43Speaker 1: wanting to give compensation for the emotional trauma that they've
- 5:46Speaker 1: given humans who were tested in traditional Guardian ways. And
- 5:51Speaker 1: this kind of... This... creates a conversation, a dialogue between
- 5:55Speaker 1: the guardian and John's mom that maybe that John Stewart Jr.
- 6:00Speaker 1: could be a worthy candidate if he was raised to
- 6:03Speaker 1: never know fear because the guardians, their test does not
- 6:06Speaker 1: take into the perspective of different cultures on earth. That
- 6:11Speaker 1: of the black experience, especially here in America and the
- 6:17Speaker 1: way that she describes it, the way that they have
- 6:19Speaker 1: to constantly live with fear. I think that this is
- 6:22Speaker 1: a really interesting conversation, Nick, that could actually have more
- 6:27Speaker 1: implications down the road. So right now, the way that
- 6:31Speaker 1: I want to talk about what makes a Green Lantern
- 6:34Speaker 1: right now, because the way the show presents it is
- 6:36Speaker 1: a Green Lantern is someone who is fearless, right? And
- 6:40Speaker 1: that's why it doesn't pick Jon Stewart Sr. Because he says,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I'm afraid when he's asked the question. Or he says, yes, right?
- 6:47Speaker 1: Later in the future of the Green Lanterns, I presume
- 6:51Speaker 1: if we get far enough in the James Gunn universe,
- 6:55Speaker 1: we will probably meet a very popular Green Lantern. She's
- 6:58Speaker 1: recently come into play in the Superman cartoon that has
- 7:04Speaker 1: been coming out of DC Studios, which if you haven't
- 7:06Speaker 1: seen it, it's a great show. Love what they're doing
- 7:08Speaker 1: in that show. This character recently made an appearance. Her
- 7:10Speaker 1: name is Jessica Cruz. And the reason why I bring
- 7:12Speaker 1: up Jessica Cruz is she is a Green Lantern character
- 7:16Speaker 1: who is afraid, right? That's her thing. She's always afraid
- 7:21Speaker 1: and she's so scared and she doesn't really even understand
- 7:23Speaker 1: why the lantern chose her, right? But her, like for Jessica,
- 7:28Speaker 1: like her thing is she, despite being so scared, she
- 7:33Speaker 1: demonstrates a tremendous amount of courage, right? She is like
- 7:39Speaker 1: this person who demonstrates this insane amount of bravery despite
- 7:43Speaker 1: the fact that she is afraid. Right. And that's what
- 7:45Speaker 1: makes her worthy of having the ring. The ring kind
- 7:47Speaker 1: of adjusts to Jessica because of the courage that outweighs
- 7:50Speaker 1: the fear. Right. So the reason why I bring this
- 7:53Speaker 1: up is so Jon Stewart Sr. kind of shows us, OK,
- 7:57Speaker 1: if you have fear, the ring is going to overlook you.
- 7:59Speaker 1: But perhaps in time and maybe in time of this show,
- 8:03Speaker 1: not saying Jessica Cruz is going to show up. I'm
- 8:05Speaker 1: saying perhaps we will see the ring change how it
- 8:10Speaker 1: chooses whoever will hold it. Right. The next lantern.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But it's not just the ring that chooses.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, clearly not, because the Guardians are making certain choices
- 8:19Speaker 1: here too, right?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Right. They're going through interviews. They're trying to pick their candidate, right?
- 8:25Speaker 3: And now they've groomed Jon along with Jon's family, which
- 8:28Speaker 3: is brilliant and brutal and heartbreaking.
- 8:31Speaker 2: And cool all at the same time.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And so manipulative.
- 8:35Speaker 2: So manipulative, yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah. And like, especially in episode four, we get to
- 8:39Speaker 1: see the, the guardians really seem to have an agenda
- 8:42Speaker 1: in removing Hal as a, as a, as a lantern. Right.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And like, so it just brings up the question, like,
- 8:48Speaker 3: how do you actually pick a guardian and who actually
- 8:52Speaker 3: picks the guardian?
- 8:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Because what we've found out now, it's like based on
- 8:56Speaker 3: episode four, the implication is if you just put the
- 8:58Speaker 3: ring on your hand and then you say the, say
- 9:00Speaker 3: the words, then you're a lantern. So yeah, you don't
- 9:05Speaker 3: need all this training and you don't even need to
- 9:06Speaker 3: necessarily be fearless. If you get a ring and say
- 9:10Speaker 3: the oath on your, at the same time, based on
- 9:14Speaker 3: what's going on.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Or do you have this, do you have to have
- 9:16Speaker 3: permission from the guardians to say the oath with the
- 9:18Speaker 3: ring on?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Like if you gave me the ring and I said it,
- 9:22Speaker 3: would it, you know, would I be a lantern or
- 9:24Speaker 3: do it? Does the, do the guardians have to like
- 9:26Speaker 3: sign off on it still, which I would imagine they
- 9:30Speaker 3: don't have to sign off on it. If, Because you
- 9:32Speaker 3: would think if they don't like Hal Jordan now, they
- 9:34Speaker 3: probably didn't like him before. So why did they allow
- 9:36Speaker 3: it before if they actually had a say?
- 9:39Speaker 1: Yeah, because Hal seems to be pretty consistent in the
- 9:42Speaker 1: fact that he's a rule breaker.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Right, exactly.
- 9:45Speaker 3: So there's a lot of open questions on how this
- 9:49Speaker 3: version of the lantern is like, how you actually get
- 9:53Speaker 3: picked to be a great lantern.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question. If there is a
- 9:58Speaker 1: difference in the way that... Hal received the ring versus
- 10:02Speaker 1: how John thinks the ring should be given, right? So
- 10:06Speaker 1: Hal receives the ring because it chooses him after he
- 10:09Speaker 1: says he's not afraid, right? John, on the other hand,
- 10:11Speaker 1: has been groomed his entire life and trained to receive
- 10:15Speaker 1: the ring. And John, in episode four, when talking to
- 10:18Speaker 1: a guardian about this, he mentions that that's what makes
- 10:22Speaker 1: him worthy of the ring, the fact that he earned it, right?
- 10:26Speaker 1: I will say, John seems to think that there is
- 10:29Speaker 1: a choice in what he has done, right? That he
- 10:32Speaker 1: chooses to honor his parents, right? By, you know, with
- 10:35Speaker 1: their sacrifice, by, you know, working to get this ring
- 10:39Speaker 1: that he's worked so hard for. But similarly to John,
- 10:43Speaker 1: or to Hal rather, similarly to Hal, this has been
- 10:47Speaker 1: chosen for him So Hal was chosen by the ring.
- 10:51Speaker 1: John was chosen by his parents. John's parents chose him
- 10:56Speaker 1: to do this. This wasn't really John's own choice. So
- 11:00Speaker 1: do you think that there's a difference is what I'm asking?
- 11:02Speaker 3: I mean, yes, only because his parents don't have the
- 11:05Speaker 3: power of the ring.
- 11:07Speaker 1: You're saying it's a difference of authority.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Right. The ring has its own governing body. Whatever that
- 11:14Speaker 2: might be.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Whether it's the guardians or the power of the ring
- 11:18Speaker 3: within itself to pick the right candidate. Right now, all
- 11:22Speaker 3: the things that Jon Stewart's done and everything we've learned
- 11:25Speaker 3: about him, he seems like someone who would of course
- 11:27Speaker 3: be worthy. I mean, his drawing skills alone, which we
- 11:30Speaker 3: get to see more of an episode three and then
- 11:33Speaker 3: a lot in episode four as well. It's a really
- 11:35Speaker 3: cool addition to the, to the character in the show,
- 11:38Speaker 3: seeing these like, Oh, you know how talented he is
- 11:40Speaker 3: with drawing. And then the scene in episode four where
- 11:42Speaker 3: he draws the drill machine and right like and then
- 11:47Speaker 3: creates it with the ring it's like that's a really
- 11:49Speaker 3: awesome way to just like give you some more context
- 11:52Speaker 3: on like how talented he is not just in military
- 11:56Speaker 3: capabilities but just being an artist and being creative right
- 11:59Speaker 3: and there's a joke in there too about he's like
- 12:00Speaker 3: oh i'm creative you know didn't you know i was
- 12:02Speaker 3: creative or whatever and so these are like really cool
- 12:05Speaker 3: moments to like get you even more intrigued about like
- 12:08Speaker 3: this character and we're what's what's next for him and
- 12:11Speaker 3: makes you feel like he's definitely worthy because like I
- 12:13Speaker 3: can't draw a drill and then, you know, like that's
- 12:16Speaker 3: just drawing it in general is impressive.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So, so, so interesting.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Well, well, creative and a fantastic artist, but he also,
- 12:24Speaker 1: he seems to have such a, a strong understanding of
- 12:29Speaker 1: how things work, right. Of the inner machinations of things.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Cause it's like one thing to draw a drill. It's
- 12:36Speaker 1: another thing to understand how a drill works. Right. So
- 12:39Speaker 1: like he, he not only has like an artist's mind,
- 12:41Speaker 1: he seems to have an engineer's mind too, which only
- 12:45Speaker 1: makes it more impressive. He's curious.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Like he looked, he said he looked up, he looked
- 12:48Speaker 3: up the machine and then drew it, you know, after
- 12:51Speaker 3: doing the research.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:52Speaker 3: So he's very curious about how to like do the
- 12:54Speaker 3: best he can.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Right. Which, I mean, that's part of his training from
- 12:57Speaker 2: his upbringing too.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:58Speaker 2: They were different. They really did groom him very well.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It's kind of hard to, who else could you possibly pick?
- 13:02Speaker 1: I bet the grooming is, is tough for me because like, man,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I understand that they were pushing him to like rise
- 13:08Speaker 1: above and be the best, but man, this parenting was questionable. Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: I will say perhaps they introduced him to William tell
- 13:14Speaker 1: just a little too early in life because we do
- 13:17Speaker 1: get the backstory of an episode one, or we get
- 13:21Speaker 1: some context as to why his father was shooting an
- 13:23Speaker 1: apple off of his head to train him to not
- 13:26Speaker 1: be afraid. Nick, When they turned it around and he
- 13:28Speaker 1: was shooting the apple off of his mom's head, I
- 13:32Speaker 1: thought for sure she was a goner. I thought for
- 13:34Speaker 1: sure this woman is about to eat it.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I did too, but it was because in the first
- 13:38Speaker 3: two episodes, we had only seen flashbacks with his father,
- 13:41Speaker 3: and it made me think that he was a single
- 13:43Speaker 3: father raising three kids.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker 3: And that this was maybe part of the reason that
- 13:47Speaker 3: he was so tough on the third child, the youngest boy, right?
- 13:51Speaker 3: It was just like trying to make him really tough
- 13:53Speaker 3: and fearless just because he was.
- 13:54Speaker 2: A single father.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And then in this back story of episode three in Outcast,
- 14:01Speaker 3: you realize that actually the mother's really the navigator of
- 14:04Speaker 3: this whole situation.
- 14:06Speaker 1: She's the pilot. She's the one taking us to our destination. Right.
- 14:10Speaker 2: She's the reason. And you realize, oh, no, he grew
- 14:13Speaker 2: up with both parents. And this is crazy.
- 14:15Speaker 3: And then when he does the William Tell with her,
- 14:20Speaker 3: I was like, oh, shoot.
- 14:23Speaker 2: For me, it wasn't like, oh, she might survive.
- 14:25Speaker 3: It might be like maybe there's an accident because the
- 14:28Speaker 3: way that they portrayed at the very beginning in the
- 14:29Speaker 3: first two episodes, again, it made me think that she
- 14:32Speaker 3: wasn't around.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Right. This was such a good storytelling move because, as
- 14:38Speaker 1: you said, we were only familiar with the dad and
- 14:40Speaker 1: then we come to the backstory and we get this
- 14:42Speaker 1: moment because there's a moment where he's going to shoot
- 14:45Speaker 1: the apple off of his father's head. We know dad
- 14:47Speaker 1: can't die just because of the timeline. Right. Right. But
- 14:50Speaker 1: we don't know about mom. So it creates like this
- 14:53Speaker 1: great suspense of, oh, my God, is she actually going
- 14:56Speaker 1: to die here? Yeah. And then, you know, the reveal. No,
- 15:00Speaker 1: she does not die. And she is a driving force
- 15:03Speaker 1: throughout John's life.
- 15:04Speaker 3: And that scene after he shoots it off off her
- 15:07Speaker 3: head is also when we learn that he doesn't like hamburgers.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Right. Right. Well, we also we also learn. Yeah. This
- 15:17Speaker 1: is why he's a vegan. Right. Right. We also learn
- 15:20Speaker 1: the significance of the bird from episode two, which he
- 15:24Speaker 1: was able to construct a life form, which still like crazy, right?
- 15:28Speaker 1: But why a bird? You know, it was kind of a,
- 15:32Speaker 1: I would venture to say it was almost like a
- 15:34Speaker 1: third parent or at least like a third supervisor in
- 15:37Speaker 1: his life because he always believed from his mother's stories
- 15:40Speaker 1: that these were the guardians, right? And I, right. And
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think even calling them guardians, there's something parental about
- 15:47Speaker 1: that even, right? Like this is like the third parent
- 15:49Speaker 1: in his life is the birds that are watching him.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:53Speaker 3: And then speaking of like the guardians always watching him,
- 15:55Speaker 3: I know the actual interview scene in episode three is
- 16:01Speaker 3: just a fantastic, like scene of dialogue between, between John
- 16:05Speaker 3: and the guardian, right?
- 16:07Speaker 1: Oh, how, how great of an actress is she?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Just, Excellent.
- 16:11Speaker 1: She's so creepy. I love it.
- 16:12Speaker 2: It was like, yeah, very creepy.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I have a, we were talking about this already about like,
- 16:20Speaker 3: how do you choose a lantern or whatever, but they
- 16:22Speaker 3: have like, there was a question in, I think John
- 16:25Speaker 3: asked her and correct me if I'm wrong, but he
- 16:27Speaker 3: asked her like, why, why were you interviewing when rings
- 16:29Speaker 3: choose lanterns? And the response was because of condolences, but
- 16:34Speaker 3: I don't like, which was like a, I don't remember
- 16:38Speaker 3: the context.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Of, Yeah, so she mentions, what do you know about Sinestro?
- 16:45Speaker 1: And this reveals a little bit of backstory that Sinestro
- 16:49Speaker 1: had killed one of the Guardians, to which he says, well,
- 16:51Speaker 1: my condolences. And then later, further down this conversation, when
- 16:56Speaker 1: they ask about, you know, why are you interviewing? This
- 16:58Speaker 1: is when she responds with, because of your condolences, right?
- 17:02Speaker 1: So unclear if she is talking about because of how, like,
- 17:08Speaker 1: sincere of a person John is, right? That he would
- 17:11Speaker 1: offer his condolences to this alien, right? Who he does
- 17:15Speaker 1: not know. Or, and what I believe to be more likely,
- 17:18Speaker 1: because of the perhaps political situation that the Guardians find
- 17:22Speaker 1: themselves in regarding Sinestro and his relationship with Hal Jordan, right?
- 17:28Speaker 2: Got it. That makes sense.
- 17:30Speaker 1: At least I think that's supposed to be the inference there. Yeah, okay.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Man, I can't wait to get more details on maybe
- 17:39Speaker 3: there's more than one way you can choose a green
- 17:40Speaker 3: lantern though right I guess it doesn't have to just
- 17:42Speaker 3: be one way so.
- 17:44Speaker 1: See I keep waiting for that I keep waiting for
- 17:45Speaker 1: them to both get two rings right but I don't
- 17:48Speaker 1: know the further we get into this show the more
- 17:51Speaker 1: I feel there will be two rings but we already
- 17:54Speaker 1: know that 10 years from this incident 2026 John doesn't
- 17:58Speaker 1: appear to have a ring Hal definitely doesn't have a
- 18:01Speaker 1: ring and he's dead unless John does have a ring
- 18:03Speaker 1: because we didn't get to see it maybe.
- 18:05Speaker 3: So someone's from our one of our previous shorts from
- 18:08Speaker 3: the from the last couple episodes commented on the 2026
- 18:13Speaker 3: dead hal jordan that didn't have his ring and was
- 18:16Speaker 3: like what if that was his backup how jordan's backup.
- 18:20Speaker 1: From the ring oh like the hologram yeah like a
- 18:22Speaker 1: hologram that's interesting because all right i don't know if
- 18:26Speaker 1: i buy that.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Because like i don't i know it's it's very far-fetched
- 18:28Speaker 3: but it was a very i loved the point i
- 18:30Speaker 3: was like that's kind of cool I.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Do, too, because I feel like the hologram has to
- 18:35Speaker 1: come back at some point.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And we have to find out why there hasn't been
- 18:39Speaker 1: another backup in over 10 years. Yeah, it's crazy. So
- 18:44Speaker 1: that's definitely going to come back. So I like that
- 18:46Speaker 1: they're thinking in that way. My only issue with it is, well,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I guess it's twofold. The first is he would have
- 18:52Speaker 1: to back himself up dead, which, like, I think of
- 18:56Speaker 1: the scary movie joke, how do you wake up dead, right?
- 18:59Speaker 1: And the other issue is, well, there was a it
- 19:03Speaker 1: appeared that there was a bullet in his head or
- 19:06Speaker 1: there was at least blood coming from his head. Right.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I think you're right about the blood. I don't know
- 19:09Speaker 2: if it was.
- 19:09Speaker 1: So like, right.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So I mean, yeah, most likely not a backup, but
- 19:13Speaker 2: a fun theory.
- 19:16Speaker 1: He's coping. That's hard copium that Hal Jordan's not dead,
- 19:19Speaker 1: but Hal appears to be dead. At least that's what
- 19:22Speaker 1: the show is telling me. Yeah.
- 19:23Speaker 2: He's most likely very dead in 2026.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I love, I love where that guy is at though.
- 19:27Speaker 1: I love the copium. Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 2: It's so fun.
- 19:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Anything else from three, episode three, you want to mention?
- 19:34Speaker 1: I mean, we talked about the parenting that, you know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: both parents are just putting everything on Hal. We learned,
- 19:42Speaker 1: not Hal, sorry, on John, but we also learned right
- 19:45Speaker 1: off the get-go that Hal is like just a few, man.
- 19:49Speaker 1: right right when as soon as they meet he just
- 19:53Speaker 1: does not appear to be on board with john which he.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Ruins he ruins john stewart getting to tell his parents
- 19:59Speaker 3: that he got that he got the job like.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Yeah like the one happy moment he was looking forward
- 20:04Speaker 1: to in his life yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Like he doesn't even get the, Oh, we're so proud
- 20:08Speaker 3: of you moment. Then he just, it's all ruined immediately
- 20:11Speaker 3: and see in the morning and so ridiculous. And of course,
- 20:14Speaker 3: how Jordan, we find out is the reason that he
- 20:16Speaker 3: gets like disarmerably discharged from the military as well.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Yes. They can bring that back up.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I mean, it's actually all the things that hell's done
- 20:23Speaker 2: to his family.
- 20:23Speaker 3: It's actually kind of wild that he has second thoughts
- 20:26Speaker 3: or a reservation about saying the oath when he gets
- 20:29Speaker 3: the ring the first time after talking to the guardians
- 20:31Speaker 3: and that they'd tell him to do it. Like, and
- 20:33Speaker 3: he has this, he like, there's something about Hal Jordan
- 20:36Speaker 3: that he respects and he doesn't want to take the
- 20:38Speaker 3: ring that way.
- 20:39Speaker 2: He wants to do it the right way.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 20:41Speaker 3: And I mean, which I, I respect that completely, but it's, it,
- 20:46Speaker 3: he gets himself into a problem because then in episode.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Four, well, him before you, before you, before you jump,
- 20:52Speaker 1: I just want to bring this up because I think
- 20:53Speaker 1: you're right. He's Hal's really kind of ruined John's life,
- 20:58Speaker 1: or at least he's defined it. Right. He's defined John's life.
- 21:02Speaker 1: And you're right. Like he, you would think he bears
- 21:04Speaker 1: this sort of resentment toward him. And maybe there's like
- 21:06Speaker 1: a small bit of that that we hear from later,
- 21:09Speaker 1: but like, you're right overall, he just seems to really
- 21:12Speaker 1: respect the guy. Right. Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 2: So very interesting. What's going to happen next.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Because he has this opportunity to say the oath. He's
- 21:22Speaker 3: been given the keys by the Guardians. He's like, next
- 21:25Speaker 3: time you wear the ring, say the oath, and you're
- 21:27Speaker 3: the lantern of this earth.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Right, right. So this is episode four, The Weenie, which,
- 21:33Speaker 1: amazing title. As you were saying, we get a conversation
- 21:37Speaker 1: between Jon and Lyanna, the Guardian, and she's saying to him,
- 21:42Speaker 1: just take the ring. Next time you get it, say
- 21:45Speaker 1: the oath, you're Green Lantern. And Jon's a little miffed
- 21:48Speaker 1: by this, man. He doesn't want to take it. He
- 21:51Speaker 1: wants to be given it, right? He wants to be
- 21:53Speaker 1: rewarded for his hard work, everything that he's been working toward, right?
- 21:57Speaker 1: He doesn't want to just take it. Like, he's already, like,
- 22:01Speaker 1: he's proven to himself that he's worthy. Jon knows he's worthy.
- 22:03Speaker 1: He just wants to be acknowledged for it, right?
- 22:06Speaker 3: Well, yeah, and he's been groomed this whole time to say, like, yes,
- 22:10Speaker 3: I accept, not, like, let me rip it from out underneath.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Someone, right?
- 22:16Speaker 2: He's been.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Well, yeah, there's the chain of command.
- 22:19Speaker 2: You're right, chain of command, exactly.
- 22:20Speaker 3: So.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It's very interesting.
- 22:23Speaker 1: There's that scene.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 22:25Speaker 1: So this scene is mirrored with Sinestro and Hal, right?
- 22:31Speaker 1: And very intentionally, because both of these conversations are happening
- 22:34Speaker 1: behind the other one's back, right? So Sinestro is telling Hal,
- 22:40Speaker 1: you got to kill John. The Guardian is telling John,
- 22:43Speaker 1: you have to betray Hal, right? So they're both playing
- 22:47Speaker 1: each other. And what I find more interesting about that is...
- 22:51Speaker 1: the game being played between the Guardian and Sinestro, right?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Because Sinestro tried to lead a coup against the Guardians.
- 22:57Speaker 1: The Guardians clearly got some shady shit going on, right?
- 23:00Speaker 1: And we still, at least in this show, we still
- 23:02Speaker 1: haven't learned a lot about that yet. So, you know,
- 23:06Speaker 1: Jon may be trying to play by the rules, but
- 23:08Speaker 1: as soon as the Guardian introduces a little bit of
- 23:11Speaker 1: shadiness toward him, he's not so sure he wants to
- 23:13Speaker 1: play by their rules anymore, right? And as far as
- 23:18Speaker 1: Hal goes, he's not super interested in listening to his
- 23:21Speaker 1: former mentor and killing this guy. Right. Cause he, he
- 23:26Speaker 1: doesn't want to be replaced, but he kind of likes John. Yeah. Yes.
- 23:29Speaker 3: But then the end of episode four leads you to
- 23:32Speaker 3: believe like, but because you know, how at the end
- 23:36Speaker 3: of episode four leaves the car crashes into a pole
- 23:38Speaker 3: with John in it. Of course, this is after how
- 23:42Speaker 3: Jordan is made aware of the conversation between the guardian
- 23:45Speaker 3: and between John about him taking the ring from him.
- 23:48Speaker 3: And again, you know, I'm sure how it doesn't know who,
- 23:50Speaker 3: if he can fully trust him at this point, if
- 23:53Speaker 3: even if he did before now, he has to like
- 23:54Speaker 3: really think about it. And so the end of episode four,
- 23:58Speaker 3: John is in a car crash and we don't know.
- 24:00Speaker 2: You know, what happens next. Most likely he's okay.
- 24:02Speaker 1: But so, but for the record, I mean, this only
- 24:05Speaker 1: happens after Hal is made aware of the conversation that
- 24:09Speaker 1: John and the guardian have behind Hal's back. Right.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And I, I do think that there is like, a
- 24:17Speaker 1: little bit of betrayal there, or perhaps, you know, he
- 24:19Speaker 1: starts to think, well, maybe Sinestro was right about this guy. Right.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I do have to get rid of John. Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 3: And I'll tell you what though, I am, I'm with
- 24:27Speaker 3: you on the whole, like something shady with the guardians.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Cause the vibe from her is strange. And, but the
- 24:34Speaker 3: vibe from Sinestro is also strange. So I, and I,
- 24:37Speaker 3: you know, the lore much, you know, I don't know
- 24:39Speaker 3: the lanterns lore. So I'm very interested in this to
- 24:41Speaker 3: find out like, what's the shady shit that's going on.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Cause it's not all roses and the, the guardian world.
- 24:48Speaker 2: There's something weird.
- 24:49Speaker 3: And part of me, like man, man, hunter wise, like
- 24:53Speaker 3: it looks like Zoe is the man hunter. And it
- 24:55Speaker 3: looks like we call that correctly.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:57Speaker 3: So like, I like the man hunter. No, we're supposed
- 25:01Speaker 3: to be scared.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I'm super torn on this. So Zoe has a confession
- 25:06Speaker 1: to John. That seems like she is confessing that she's
- 25:09Speaker 1: the man hunter. At least it, it seems to go
- 25:12Speaker 1: with a story that will make an, was telling us, right?
- 25:15Speaker 1: That the Manhunter saved his life. Zoe, in a separate conversation, says,
- 25:19Speaker 1: I saved his life, right? Then Zoe is destroyed, seemingly,
- 25:24Speaker 1: by a laser from the sky, right? And what makes
- 25:28Speaker 1: me doubt our guess, and like, all signs point to
- 25:31Speaker 1: her being the Manhunter, right? All signs. What makes me
- 25:34Speaker 1: doubt it is the fact that Hal said it. Hal's like, well,
- 25:37Speaker 1: there's no way she could have survived unless she was
- 25:39Speaker 1: the Manhunter. And so now I'm like, well, is that
- 25:42Speaker 1: the show telling us, like, that she's definitely not the
- 25:45Speaker 1: Manhunter or is this going to be a situation where
- 25:48Speaker 1: she is the Manhunter and Hal's going to be like, see,
- 25:50Speaker 1: I told you just like in episode one with like
- 25:52Speaker 1: the alien, right? Like, see, I was right. He is
- 25:54Speaker 1: an alien. Like, is that what's going to happen? I
- 25:57Speaker 1: don't know. They're making me second guess it now.
- 26:00Speaker 3: No, I think, I think it was pretty clear at
- 26:02Speaker 3: the end of that episode that Zoe's the Manhunter.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And well, then we're really smart. Cause we called that.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yes, we did for a moment there. I was like,
- 26:10Speaker 2: it is Will Macon, you know, when, when they're, when they.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Go to the, Oh yeah, that was BS.
- 26:14Speaker 2: The slaughterhouse. And they're talking to this, this, the tech guy.
- 26:16Speaker 3: And like, and obviously very quickly, like we find out
- 26:21Speaker 3: that this guy's just been placed there.
- 26:23Speaker 2: He's not actually a Manhunter. And then he says, we'll
- 26:25Speaker 2: make it. And we're like, I don't know. It doesn't feel,
- 26:28Speaker 2: you know, I didn't, it's like, he's like, you know,
- 26:30Speaker 2: it is. We'll make it or whatever. Like what?
- 26:31Speaker 3: And then their conversation in the car, you find out
- 26:34Speaker 3: like how's pieces of stuff together. And John Stewart, you know,
- 26:38Speaker 3: him not being upset that she was dead. Which like,
- 26:42Speaker 3: you know, I mean, he didn't know her that well,
- 26:44Speaker 3: but I don't know if he should be sad, sad,
- 26:46Speaker 3: but I guess maybe he should have a little bit
- 26:48Speaker 3: of sadness. So, but what I want to know is
- 26:50Speaker 3: how John knew she didn't die in the car.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. The gut feeling. Yeah. What was that about? Yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Very interesting.
- 26:58Speaker 3: So, but yeah, I think at least a bit in
- 27:02Speaker 3: episode four, it's pretty clear. It's Zoe, which is, which
- 27:04Speaker 3: is cool. Cause we called that, but two, I kind
- 27:07Speaker 3: of liked that for the story. just to see what
- 27:10Speaker 3: happens next.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So Nick, we only have a couple of, or a
- 27:14Speaker 1: few episodes left, right? We're at the halfway mark. My
- 27:18Speaker 1: question is, where do you think we go from here?
- 27:21Speaker 1: I mean, we already got to the compound. We found
- 27:23Speaker 1: out that, you know, the Manhunter technology is indeed the
- 27:27Speaker 1: technology that's being held over there. We got to this
- 27:30Speaker 1: compound a little sooner than I thought we would. The
- 27:32Speaker 1: only other prediction I have is a Hal Jordan backstory episode. Mm-hmm.
- 27:38Speaker 1: in which we get to actually see what happened with
- 27:41Speaker 1: Albin Sur and Hal in that actual question, right? Because
- 27:47Speaker 1: I suspect that there is more to that. And perhaps
- 27:50Speaker 1: if Zoe is indeed the Manhunter, as she appears to be,
- 27:54Speaker 1: perhaps we get a bit of a backstory there too.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I would love a Hal Jordan backstory episode. I think
- 27:59Speaker 2: we all would.
- 28:00Speaker 3: And they just gave us one on Jon Stewart. So
- 28:02Speaker 3: it kind of feels like one of the last four
- 28:05Speaker 3: episodes could very well be a Hal Jordan backstory episode.
- 28:07Speaker 3: which would be very cool.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Something leading to his death, at least.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Well, I mean, we might not, depending on how many
- 28:15Speaker 3: seasons there are, we might not have the resolve there.
- 28:19Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 28:20Speaker 1: Am I wrong in thinking that in the preview of
- 28:23Speaker 1: the entire season, we saw Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner? I'm
- 28:27Speaker 1: like 99% sure we did, right?
- 28:29Speaker 2: I don't know. We'd have to go back and watch it.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I don't think so. I'm pretty sure he's in one
- 28:35Speaker 1: of the images after episode one of like, you know,
- 28:38Speaker 1: this season on lanterns, like I'm pretty sure his dumb
- 28:40Speaker 1: bowl cut shows up. So like it's sooner or later,
- 28:44Speaker 1: like that's going to be addressed. Like why guy is
- 28:48Speaker 1: the green lantern.
- 28:49Speaker 3: It just feels, if that's the case, it feels very
- 28:50Speaker 3: out of place for me just because the last time
- 28:52Speaker 3: we saw guy Gardner was in the Superman movie, which
- 28:54Speaker 3: is a much brighter overall film as far as the
- 28:58Speaker 3: look of it. Like this is such a true detective
- 29:00Speaker 3: vibe that like, I feel like if you throw Guy
- 29:03Speaker 3: Gardner's goofy ass into this show, it's going to completely
- 29:06Speaker 3: flip it upside down. And I don't know, I'm not
- 29:08Speaker 3: going to know what's going on anymore. I, I, I.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Think it could work. I think it can work the
- 29:14Speaker 1: same way that like, if you think of Spider-Man brand
- 29:17Speaker 1: new day and Frank Castle being in Spider-Man, right?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Sure.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Like you got this like hardened man in this, like
- 29:25Speaker 1: otherwise like bright and optimistic movie. And like, they tone
- 29:28Speaker 1: him down like a smidge, just a smidge, right? They
- 29:31Speaker 1: didn't totally make him, not a hardened bad dude, right? Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 1: But he's toned down. I could see it going the
- 29:39Speaker 1: other way with God. right? Like his personality could be
- 29:42Speaker 1: pretty brutal, right? Like you just toned down the goofiness
- 29:45Speaker 1: a little bit, right? I think it could gel, especially
- 29:49Speaker 1: with John and the way that John is such a
- 29:51Speaker 1: stick in the mud. Like those two could bounce together
- 29:54Speaker 1: pretty well. At least I personally think so.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll see.
- 29:58Speaker 3: One question I wanted to ask you about the compound
- 30:00Speaker 3: when they, when they make it in the compound, right
- 30:02Speaker 3: before the alarm, well, after the alarm goes off and
- 30:04Speaker 3: like the, the guys.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Come in to apprehend them and they use like, they
- 30:10Speaker 2: use darkness, I think is what Hal says.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Do you like, they just like figured out how to
- 30:18Speaker 3: bottle darkness and like, does that keep the ring from
- 30:21Speaker 3: working basically is what it seemed like is, is the
- 30:24Speaker 3: power of that weapon they created. Um, Cause that's like
- 30:28Speaker 3: very interesting.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I took from that is that, yeah, it's, it's darkness. Right.
- 30:34Speaker 1: And it completely like takes away from their senses, but
- 30:37Speaker 1: I think there's like almost a certain fear to it. Right.
- 30:40Speaker 1: And if you hear them, like if you're listening to them,
- 30:42Speaker 1: they're both kind of panicking, you know, Hal says, use
- 30:45Speaker 1: the ring. And John's like, it's not working. Right. I
- 30:48Speaker 1: think that it introduces a sense of panic to them
- 30:51Speaker 1: that temporarily cripples their ability to create constructs or to
- 30:55Speaker 1: communicate with the ring. Right. That's my theory.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that was super interesting.
- 31:01Speaker 3: The scene that immediately follows was disturbing and weird and
- 31:05Speaker 3: completely hilarious as well.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Right, yeah. Will Macon wanted a nude drawing of himself
- 31:12Speaker 1: just to see how good John actually is.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah, like, what the hell?
- 31:17Speaker 1: Is one of the stranger scenes I've seen in any
- 31:20Speaker 1: superhero content ever.
- 31:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that was super, super strange. It was funny, but
- 31:25Speaker 3: it was just like, what are we doing?
- 31:27Speaker 1: And then, you know, John, you're going to tell me
- 31:29Speaker 1: Guy Gardner couldn't be in this scene. He can't be
- 31:31Speaker 1: in this show, Nick. Guy Gardner couldn't do it.
- 31:33Speaker 3: He can't, he can't, but you know, I don't know.
- 31:36Speaker 3: It's just like, honestly, I hate his fricking bowl cut.
- 31:39Speaker 3: His bowl cut does not work in any show or
- 31:42Speaker 3: any movie or any nothing. Like, Guy Gardner needs a haircut.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You heard it here first.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Listen, that just means you can't be in the Justice Gang,
- 31:50Speaker 1: all right?
- 31:50Speaker 2: I don't want to be in the Justice Gang.
- 31:52Speaker 3: I'd rather be a citizen of Metropolis that might get
- 31:56Speaker 3: a building dropped on him than be in the Justice Gang.
- 31:59Speaker 1: That is, your words are cutting, unlike that haircut. So
- 32:04Speaker 1: we'll move on from here.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Speaking of haircuts, anyway, you need one.
- 32:08Speaker 1: All right.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I think that's all my points from episode four.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Did you have anything that you really loved or really
- 32:14Speaker 3: didn't like before we close out the episode?
- 32:18Speaker 1: The slaughtering of the cow. When we stormed the compound,
- 32:23Speaker 1: there is a cow that is slaughtered with superior Manhunter technology.
- 32:27Speaker 1: And while efficient, that cow was exceptionally cute, which they
- 32:33Speaker 1: did on purpose. And I really kind of resent them
- 32:36Speaker 1: for that. That almost made me want to be a vegetarian.
- 32:40Speaker 2: But the key phrase there, Joe, is almost.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Almost. I mean, dude, I mean, listen, I have all
- 32:45Speaker 1: the respect in the world for anyone who goes vegetarian, vegan.
- 32:48Speaker 1: It's not in me, man. I'm sorry. I love me
- 32:52Speaker 1: a good burger.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Anything else off the top of your head? What do
- 32:56Speaker 3: you think happened next to end the episode?
- 32:58Speaker 2: Where are we going?
- 33:00Speaker 1: I mean, listen, the show is called Lanterns. At some point,
- 33:04Speaker 1: We're getting two rings. Just because there was no ring
- 33:07Speaker 1: on Hal's hand in 2026 doesn't mean there was no
- 33:10Speaker 1: ring on John's hand. You feel me? So two rings
- 33:14Speaker 1: on these boys at some point. We're working together. Lanterns.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I love that.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Well, my friends, that's a review. Thanks for listening.
