- 0:02Welcome back to Fostering Faith. And so in today's
- 0:05episode, we are going to be talking about something
- 0:07that has been a common theme in our office. And
- 0:10so run your own race, embracing failure and letting
- 0:12go of comparison. Hey guys, my name is Tracy
- 0:15Foster. I'm with Fostering Faith. And today we're
- 0:17going to be talking about something that I think
- 0:18that we all struggle with. And we struggled with
- 0:20it at some point, if we're going through it right
- 0:22now, the failure of failure and constant temptation
- 0:24and comparison of ourselves to others. It's easy
- 0:27to scroll through social media and see someone
- 0:28else's highlights and reels and immediately think
- 0:30that you're not measuring up. And why am I not
- 0:32there? Why am I not doing what she's doing? Why
- 0:33does she have a bigger house than me? Why is
- 0:34her husband perfect? Why is her skin so beautiful?
- 0:37Why does she have a six pack abs? And I don't.
- 0:38Why does her kid's mind? Why is her kid's rooms
- 0:40clean? All these things can go be going through
- 0:42our head whenever we're doom scrolling. But here's
- 0:44the truth. God didn't create us to run someone
- 0:46else's race. He has uniquely made you for just
- 0:49as time as now. And so for each of us, we need
- 0:51to focus on what that is and we can find true
- 0:54freedom in that. So maybe you have recently faced
- 0:57a setback. Maybe you're feeling stuck. Maybe
- 0:59you're thinking, why am I not further along?
- 1:01Or perhaps you're just caught up in a comparison
- 1:03trap, believing that someone else is success
- 1:05and there's no room for you in that space. If
- 1:08that sounds familiar, I want you to stick around
- 1:09because I think this episode is for you. If you
- 1:11know someone that is struggling with comparison
- 1:13and really needing some help. Send this podcast
- 1:17over, you know, and by sharing and subscribing
- 1:19and sharing this podcast, it helps us grow. It
- 1:21helps us move on from hundreds to thousands to
- 1:25a hundred thousands of listeners and maybe millions
- 1:26one day. God will allow us to reach those that
- 1:29need to hear us. And that's what we're going
- 1:31to be happy with. So let's dive in and talk about
- 1:33why it's okay to fail, but why it's okay to be
- 1:36exactly where you are right now. And so let's
- 1:39talk about the danger of comparison. And so comparison
- 1:41is one of the enemy's most favorite tools. It
- 1:44whispers to you that you're not enough. And what's
- 1:52worse is that we're often compared behind the
- 1:54scenes and moments to someone's highlight reels.
- 1:56And so while we're scrolling on Instagram, we
- 1:59see the 30 second reel of them on vacation, them
- 2:02doing their favorite workout, but we missed their
- 2:05300, 600 pound life. We missed the debt that
- 2:07they went into to go on that vacation. We missed
- 2:10the fact that they are spending eight hours filming
- 2:13for a 30 second TikTok or reel or YouTube short
- 2:16or whatever. We see their perfectly filtered
- 2:19life on social media and we assume, we assume.
- 2:22And so we know what assuming means. And so that
- 2:23makes you a rear end and me too. And so if we
- 2:28have it all together, but what if we don't see
- 2:30the late night tears, the prayers, the struggles?
- 2:33And so the Bible warns us against comparison.
- 2:35And so Galatians 6, 4 through 5 says, each one
- 2:38of us should test our own actions when they take
- 2:40pride in themselves alone without comparing ourselves
- 2:42to someone else for each one should carry our
- 2:45own load. This verse is so beautifully powerful
- 2:48because it's a reminder of our journey is our
- 2:51own. God doesn't measure our success by how we
- 2:53stack up against others. He looks at your heart.
- 2:56He looks at our faithfulness. He looks at our
- 2:57willing to keep going. He has created you beautifully
- 2:59for the race that he has put in front of you.
- 3:02And so it's not about what Susie's doing, what
- 3:04Sally's doing, what... all these people are doing
- 3:06because they're them and you are the race of
- 3:09one person. And so we are keeping our eyes on
- 3:11Jesus. We're running the race that he has set
- 3:13in front of us. And we're not looking to the
- 3:15left. We're not looking to the right. Whenever
- 3:17you're in the gym and you're looking at someone
- 3:18doing bicep curls and they're like, oh my gosh,
- 3:21they're on 45s or on guys are like, oh, they're
- 3:22on hundreds. And I'll pick up a weight that you
- 3:24were never meant to carry. And you end up hurting
- 3:25yourself. You end up then straining a muscle
- 3:28or what happens if you're on the treadmill and
- 3:29you look over and someone is just like jogging
- 3:31and jogging and they. But knowns to you, they've
- 3:33been training for years and they're on their
- 3:34seventh marathon, but you think that you can
- 3:35keep up with them and it's your second day at
- 3:36the gym. So you crank up the treadmill to 7 .2
- 3:39and you're looking over and you fall off the
- 3:40treadmill because you are trying to run a race
- 3:42that you were never meant to run. That is in
- 3:45their lane and not yours because your eyes was
- 3:47fixed someplace else other than Jesus besides
- 3:49what was right in front of you. And you will
- 3:51fall and you will fall flat on your face and
- 3:53he will let you. He will allow you to do your
- 3:55own will. because he allows us to fail. He allows
- 3:59us to fail, fall flat on our face. And so whenever
- 4:01we look up, he grabs our hand and says, let's
- 4:04do it again, sis. Let's do it again my way. And
- 4:07so God will allow you to fail if you want to
- 4:10do it your own way. And so what about if we redefine
- 4:13failure? And so let's talk about failure. That
- 4:15word can feel so heavy if you are a competitive
- 4:18person, if you are a type A anal retentive person.
- 4:20But let's challenge the way that you think of
- 4:22it differently. And so a lot of times whenever
- 4:24we're going through life, we can have a different
- 4:26perspective. And so we can look at things in
- 4:28a negative light or we can look at things in
- 4:30a positive light. I was listening to something
- 4:33several months ago and it was like the. The difference
- 4:36between anxiety and excitement. And so whenever
- 4:38they were interviewing Olympic athletes that
- 4:41were going to go down this like slalom, they
- 4:43were like, oh my gosh, are you so nervous? And
- 4:44they were like, no, I'm excited. And so it's
- 4:46the same, you know, adrenaline. It's the same
- 4:48dopamine. It's the same chemicals that are going
- 4:50through your brain. But one positive spin is
- 4:52I'm so excited to be doing this. I have trained
- 4:55my whole life versus I am so nervous to fly down
- 4:58this hill at 100 miles an hour and do whatever.
- 5:00And so you can have a positive perspective or
- 5:02you can have a negative perspective. And in the
- 5:04Bible, we can see so many stories of people who
- 5:06failed and failed big, but God isn't done with
- 5:10them. And so you think of Peter, you think of
- 5:11David, you think of Moses. Peter denied Jesus
- 5:14three times, but later God used him to preach
- 5:16and lead thousands of people to Christ. Failure
- 5:19is not the end of Peter's story. It's not the
- 5:21end of your story either. And so what was it?
- 5:24Benjamin Franklin that invented the light bulb
- 5:26said, I just figured out 3000 ways not to invent
- 5:29a light bulb. And so instead of thinking of 3
- 5:32,000 failures, he thought of 3 ,000 ways not
- 5:34to do something. And so we have Romans 8, 28
- 5:36that says, and we know that all things works
- 5:38for good for those who love him, who have been
- 5:41called according to his purpose. That means that
- 5:44even in your failures are not wasted. God can
- 5:47take your broken pieces, your addictions, your
- 5:49drug problems, your gambling, your pornography,
- 5:52your... And he can take all of those broken pieces,
- 5:56that story, and weave them into something beautiful.
- 5:59So instead of seeing your failure as defeat,
- 6:02you can see it as a lesson, as a stepping stone
- 6:04towards your growth. Because it's not about the
- 6:06mountain to mountain. It's about the valleys.
- 6:08Because we learn more in our valleys than we
- 6:10do in everyday life. And so we learn and we can
- 6:13see more in the valleys. And we can see on our
- 6:17mountaintops and the pruning and the molding
- 6:18and just how he lets us shine through the valley
- 6:22moments in our life. That's whenever we become
- 6:24close to him. That's whenever we have to lean
- 6:26on him for our strength because we have no strength.
- 6:28We have nothing to give. And so we are fully
- 6:30dependent upon God in our broken mess. And so
- 6:33it's not about failing. It's about leaning into
- 6:36what you can learn not to repeat again. It's
- 6:39about, oh, I've learned not to do this again.
- 6:41I've learned. And so it's about being corrected
- 6:43in those moments. and celebrating the progress.
- 6:46And so let's talk about celebrating your progress.
- 6:48Instead of people being so negative, like I have
- 6:50weight loss clients that come in every month
- 6:52and their goal is to lose 10 pounds, but they
- 6:53lost seven. And so they like berate themselves
- 6:55that they didn't lose the 10 pounds, but they
- 6:58didn't celebrate their success. They didn't celebrate
- 7:00their success of losing seven pounds, feeling
- 7:01great, sleeping well, being in the gym five days
- 7:04a week. And so the non -scale victories, they're
- 7:06just completely negating and they don't celebrate
- 7:08their progress or are patients that are completely
- 7:10so depressed that they don't celebrate the fact
- 7:13that they took a shower that day, that they got
- 7:14up, that they showed up for their kids, they
- 7:16showed up for their family. Sometimes taking
- 7:18a shower can be a huge win. And so celebrating
- 7:20your progress is such an important thing. Whether
- 7:23it is small, whether it is big, celebrate your
- 7:25progress. Those snowball effects, those mailbox
- 7:28wins are so important. And so now I want you
- 7:31to pause and think about how far you've come.
- 7:34Seriously, take a moment. Maybe you've grown
- 7:36in your faith. Maybe you're learning to love
- 7:38yourself more. Maybe you're overcoming something
- 7:40that you felt was literally impossible. But that
- 7:44progress matters. That progress shows you that
- 7:46you're one still alive, that God brought you
- 7:49out of that, and he will continue to guide you
- 7:51and allow you to progress if you follow his ways.
- 7:54And so we can get caught up in the we haven't
- 7:57done and we forgot to celebrate what we have
- 7:58done. But one practical way to shift your perspective
- 8:01in this is journaling. Write down three things
- 8:04that you're proud of just this past week. Pause
- 8:05the episode and write down three things that
- 8:07you were proud of this week. I made it to the
- 8:09gym. I woke up on time. I wasn't late. I didn't
- 8:12cuss. I didn't roll my eyes. I actually opened
- 8:16up the Bible app. They don't have to be huge.
- 8:19Maybe you can handle a stressful situation calmly.
- 8:21Maybe you reached out to encourage someone. Maybe
- 8:23you took time just to sit and do nothing. Maybe
- 8:26you sat down with your family and watched the
- 8:28TV versus being a helicopter mom and doing all
- 8:29the things. You sat down and watched the basketball
- 8:31game. You sat down and you allowed yourself just
- 8:34to breathe. our progress is. That is a win. And
- 8:39so celebrating God's small victories, he sees
- 8:41every step. He sees every prayer. He sees every
- 8:42effort that you are putting into something that
- 8:44is so important to you. So let's be people who
- 8:47celebrate progress and not perfection. You're
- 8:49never going to be perfect. I will never be perfect.
- 8:51The only perfect person that lived died on a
- 8:56cross for you. And so it's about not celebrating
- 9:00the perfection because you will never be. And
- 9:02if you try to be, you will be let down every
- 9:04day. And why strive for something that you can
- 9:06never get? But let's celebrate that progress.
- 9:09Waking up in the day can be something to be celebrated.
- 9:12The fact that you can walk is something to celebrate.
- 9:14And the fact that you chose one Oreo versus a
- 9:16row of Oreos, make sure that you write that down
- 9:19as a win. And Habakkuk 2 .2 says, write it down
- 9:22plain as day. And so someone can take it and
- 9:23run with it. I am a huge fan of journaling. I
- 9:27have said it time and time and time again. And
- 9:29so it doesn't have to be lengthy. It doesn't
- 9:30have to be, you know, like philosophical and
- 9:32poem and like lines and all the markers and all
- 9:34the highlighters and it doesn't have to be all
- 9:36that. Just write it down. And that way you can
- 9:38see the pros and the cons. And oh my gosh, I
- 9:41did this and I did this and I did this. And that's
- 9:42going to make you more happy. That's going to
- 9:44produce more dopamine and that's going to produce
- 9:46better outcomes because you can see it down written
- 9:48on paper. And so whenever you do that, you can
- 9:51see, man, I'm good at this. I'm good at this.
- 9:53maybe I just should focus on running my own race.
- 9:56And so the Bible tells us in Hebrew 12 .1, it
- 9:58says, let us run with perseverance the race that
- 10:00is marked set out for us. And so notice that
- 10:02it says the race marked out for us, not someone
- 10:05else's race, not the race that we think that
- 10:07we should be running, but the one that God has
- 10:09specifically designed for each of us. You were
- 10:11uniquely made just for a time as this, as it
- 10:14says in Esther. And so I did a video like all
- 10:17that on YouTube and like TikTok a while ago,
- 10:19because we had the chance and opportunity, as
- 10:20I said in my last podcast about you were made
- 10:23for just a time as this. And so he has made a
- 10:25race specifically for you. He's given you the
- 10:27shoes. He's given you the running gear. He's
- 10:28given you the endurance, the stamina. He's given
- 10:31you everything that you need to be successful.
- 10:32He has laid it out on a table in the midst of
- 10:34your enemies. And he's designed you perfectly
- 10:37for the time that you are here right now. And
- 10:39so maybe you're feeling like you're ready. is
- 10:40really slow right now. Maybe he's telling you
- 10:42to walk and you're like, oh my gosh, let me go.
- 10:44Let me go. Let me sprint. Let me run. Maybe it's
- 10:46your waiting season, but that's okay. Trust that
- 10:48God is working. Even whenever you cannot see
- 10:51him, he is moving mountains. He's setting up
- 10:52because your God is such a meticulous God. The
- 10:54details that he does and orchestrates because
- 10:57he knows your tomorrow. He knows your next week.
- 10:58He knows your month. He knows your five years
- 10:59from now. And so we have to trust in him. And
- 11:03so that is what faith is. If he gave you the
- 11:04blueprints for your life, that would just be
- 11:06you walking in. already mapped out plan that's
- 11:10not walking by faith. And so we walk by faith,
- 11:11not by sight. And so whenever we're tempted to
- 11:13look at someone else's success, choose instead
- 11:15to cheer them on and be like, oh my gosh, their
- 11:17race is, it fits them so well. There's room for
- 11:20all of us to thrive because we all have something
- 11:22specific that God is trying to do in us. And
- 11:24so as we wrap up today, I want to remind you
- 11:25that you are exactly where you need to be. You're
- 11:28not exact. You are where God knew you were going
- 11:30to be. There's nothing that you have done that
- 11:31surprised him and you're not behind and you're
- 11:34not failing. You're growing. You are maturing.
- 11:36He is allowing the dead leaves to fall off of
- 11:39you so you can be pruned. Failure isn't your
- 11:42identity. Comparison doesn't define you. What
- 11:44defines you, and I tell my patients this all
- 11:45the time, you are not a disease, you are not
- 11:47a diagnosis. The things that you get to say about
- 11:49yourself and the labels that you get to wear
- 11:50are what God has called you, loved, chosen, and
- 11:53you were called for a purpose. You are a child
- 11:55of God. You have a heavenly father that loves
- 11:57you. No matter what you've done, what you think
- 11:59you failed at, what season that you're in, you
- 12:02are loved. And there's nothing that you can do
- 12:04to make him love you more. There is not one more
- 12:06sale. There's not one more million dollars. There's
- 12:08not one house that you can sell, not one car
- 12:09you can sell. one more scripture that you can
- 12:11read, that he would love you more. You were made
- 12:14perfect, and by his grace and by his mercy, you
- 12:16are loved. And so I would love to pray for you.
- 12:20And so if we bow our heads, dear Heavenly Father,
- 12:22thank you so much for today. Thank you so much
- 12:23for yesterday. I want to thank you for each person
- 12:25listening to this today. Help us release the
- 12:27burden of comparison and embrace the grace that
- 12:29we have set before us. Teach us to see our failures
- 12:31as opportunity, as growth, and remind us of how
- 12:33far we have come, and that we may trust your
- 12:35timing and celebrate our progress and our wins.
- 12:38making in our lives you're making a difference
- 12:40thank you for changing our hearts thank you for
- 12:42renewing our mind thank you for everything that
- 12:44you've done in jesus name i pray Amen. We hope
- 12:48that this message has encouraged you. Thank you
- 12:50so much for spending your time with me. I know
- 12:52this episode could encourage someone. It's just
- 12:54that one person, not the 99, not the million,
- 12:56just the one. And so if this episode has encouraged
- 12:58you, I would love to hear about it. Share it
- 13:00in the comments, share it with a friend. I want
- 13:01to take this moment to thank you and reflect
- 13:03on one area that you see your growth in. Share
- 13:06it with me, share it on social media, put the
- 13:08hashtags in fostering faith podcast. And allow
- 13:10others to see your testimony because we go through
- 13:13trials, not for us, but to help others. And so
- 13:16it's about a testimony. And so God has brought
- 13:18you into a time like this to share what he has
- 13:20done, what muck and what mud he has pulled you
- 13:22out of. Share that story. Embrace the race that
- 13:25he has put in front of you. And so until next
- 13:27time, keep running your race. You're doing better
- 13:29than you think you are. And have an amazing week.
- 13:31Bye.
