- 0:50Speaker 3: And welcome back to Saint Vincent College in the trope
- 0:52Speaker 3: where you are inside the locker room with Max Starks, myself,
- 0:56Speaker 3: Rob King, We thank you very much for being with us.
- 0:58Speaker 3: We are talking of offensive line, all things offensive line
- 1:02Speaker 3: because of how important it is to this team, and
- 1:05Speaker 3: so Max, you know, the Troy Foultano really looked good
- 1:10Speaker 3: last year at right tackle, just got better and better,
- 1:12Speaker 3: and his first year as the starters, the season went along,
- 1:14Speaker 3: and then you know Mason McCormick, right next to him
- 1:16Speaker 3: a year plus. Starting that duo seemed to look good. Well,
- 1:20Speaker 3: now you draft a haunt a chour and you flop
- 1:23Speaker 3: those guys to the left side. And there was there
- 1:25Speaker 3: was thoughts. There are a lot of thoughts about Troy foul Tan.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It was such a good player that a lot of
- 1:29Speaker 3: people thought, Hey, he could be an all world guard,
- 1:32Speaker 3: he could be a really good starting tackle. Well they've
- 1:35Speaker 3: kept him at the tackle position, and you know, I
- 1:38Speaker 3: don't think they've even entertained the guard thing. That was
- 1:40Speaker 3: more people talking, Yeah, but anyway, don't know about these
- 1:43Speaker 3: cookies by the way, Yeah don't. You'll be answering and
- 1:46Speaker 3: I'll be eating soon. So the we got a little
- 1:56Speaker 3: punch he here in the trope. So you move those
- 1:59Speaker 3: two guys. What is the biggest first of all, talk
- 2:02Speaker 3: about the difficulties of a tackle moving from one side
- 2:05Speaker 3: to the other, even if you have experience at both
- 2:08Speaker 3: of those positions.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Well, the first thing that you have to worry about
- 2:13Speaker 4: is mentally switching over plays. Now, the good thing is here,
- 2:17Speaker 4: this is a unique situation for Troy. This is all
- 2:21Speaker 4: a brand new offense, right, this is a brand new terminology.
- 2:24Speaker 4: So he's not carrying over old scheme habits to the
- 2:28Speaker 4: other side, so coming into this he can kind of
- 2:31Speaker 4: be relatively new. The thing that he's going to be
- 2:33Speaker 4: fighting more is biomechanicska, meaning physiologically, he's taken so many
- 2:40Speaker 4: reps at right tackle over the past year right that
- 2:43Speaker 4: you have to now retrain your body to kick the
- 2:47Speaker 4: left leg back as opposed to keeping you up as
- 2:49Speaker 4: a post leg and work on a different angle in
- 2:52Speaker 4: the opposite direction than what you're used to, and just
- 2:55Speaker 4: doing enough reps to be comfortable with that new neuropathway
- 3:01Speaker 4: okay for his body and for him, that was the
- 3:06Speaker 4: biggest thing, you know, left foot back, right foot forward,
- 3:10Speaker 4: you know, versus the other way around at the right
- 3:12Speaker 4: tackle position. And then how do I see things now?
- 3:15Speaker 4: You know you're a little bit more left eye dominance
- 3:18Speaker 4: for your outside edge versus your right eye dominance. You know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: you're worried about more reactionary to the inside. You're trying
- 3:23Speaker 4: to keep a guy wide to your left and he's
- 3:25Speaker 4: going to be lining up to the left, so you
- 3:27Speaker 4: need to be able to keep an eye on him
- 3:28Speaker 4: while also keeping an eye on the ball. Those are
- 3:31Speaker 4: the kind of the little physiological things that you have
- 3:34Speaker 4: to change and then flipping the plays. In your mind,
- 3:37Speaker 4: you're used to a tube being to your side. Now
- 3:40Speaker 4: it's a three or an odd number to the left,
- 3:43Speaker 4: even number to the right at the flip. What the
- 3:45Speaker 4: strength is to me when I hear a play call
- 3:48Speaker 4: and when I'm digesting it. So those are kind of
- 3:51Speaker 4: the subtle differences you have to make, and so for
- 3:54Speaker 4: Troy so far has not been an issue.
- 3:56Speaker 3: So for example, like if you're playing left tackle, if
- 3:59Speaker 3: you're playing right tackle, this is fairly obvious and I
- 4:01Speaker 3: don't know if this happens to you quickly, but your
- 4:04Speaker 3: first move is going to be TJ. Here comes TJ.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Watt your right tackle. Your first move is to drop
- 4:09Speaker 3: step back with your right leg and try to square
- 4:12Speaker 3: up to them. The left tackle, obviously, your first step
- 4:15Speaker 3: is to drop back with your left leg to square
- 4:19Speaker 3: up to that pass rusher who's trying to beat you
- 4:20Speaker 3: on an outside path? Is that what you're kind of
- 4:23Speaker 3: talking about, as far as the neudological pathways and that
- 4:25Speaker 3: sort of thing.
- 4:26Speaker 4: My push leg on the right side is my left leg,
- 4:29Speaker 4: so I'm pushing from the inside out to my right
- 4:33Speaker 4: and then your right leg is Now what we call
- 4:35Speaker 4: it gather the gather step or the gather leg. Right,
- 4:38Speaker 4: you're pushing so far forward that the right leg now
- 4:41Speaker 4: keeps you in balance because it's sticking in the ground
- 4:44Speaker 4: and you're sliding your left leg. Flip that left side.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Now I'm pushing off with my right leg to go left,
- 4:51Speaker 4: and now my left foot is my gather step or
- 4:54Speaker 4: my gather foot to bring me back to balance. It's
- 4:57Speaker 4: a complete opposite of what you been doing. So that's
- 5:01Speaker 4: where the neurological side of it comes into it, and
- 5:04Speaker 4: so you have to get comfortable with that. And in
- 5:07Speaker 4: traditional circumstances, I'll say this, that progression comes a little
- 5:12Speaker 4: bit slower because you're not getting as many reps. Well,
- 5:14Speaker 4: here in the Mike McCarthy camp, everybody goes back to school, right,
- 5:19Speaker 4: like Rodney Dangerfield. We're going back to school, guys. Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 4: and he's getting a lot more reps than he normally
- 5:25Speaker 4: would on a daily basis. To speed up that process,
- 5:28Speaker 4: to get more comfortable, to make it easier to hit
- 5:31Speaker 4: the triple, Indy, exactly. That's right. You got to be
- 5:33Speaker 4: able to hit that triple Lindy. I mean, you know
- 5:35Speaker 4: it's a ten meter board up there. This is, this
- 5:37Speaker 4: is this is not just a little you know, a
- 5:39Speaker 4: little one meter board right off right off the pool
- 5:41Speaker 4: that's in your backyard.
- 5:42Speaker 3: I just can I just since you brought since you
- 5:44Speaker 3: brought up that movie, can I just tell you that
- 5:47Speaker 3: one of them as an English literature major in college.
- 5:49Speaker 4: That was my major.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And if anybody out there is ever sat in an
- 5:54Speaker 3: English class in college, you know what this is like.
- 5:57Speaker 3: If you've ever majored in it, you know what this
- 5:59Speaker 3: is like. Three times a week, five days a week,
- 6:03Speaker 3: three times a day, five days a week.
- 6:06Speaker 4: For four years.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, what do you think of what's your interpretation
- 6:11Speaker 3: of what so and so means here?
- 6:12Speaker 4: Well?
- 6:13Speaker 3: I think it's kind of a Freudian suko.
- 6:15Speaker 4: But you know, and you're.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Just like, what is this dude talking about? What is
- 6:19Speaker 3: my fellow student talking about? He's just making up worse.
- 6:21Speaker 4: So in the movie, in the movie back to School.
- 6:24Speaker 4: So that's everybody.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Everybody's got an interpretation, and it's you know, it's always
- 6:28Speaker 3: deeper than you think.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Sometimes you're like, why I didn't wring that. I never
- 6:31Speaker 4: thought about that anyway.
- 6:32Speaker 3: So, So Rodney Dangerfield goes back to school and he is, uh,
- 6:39Speaker 3: he needs to write a paper on Kurt Vonnegut, right,
- 6:43Speaker 3: but he doesn't have time because he's running his business
- 6:45Speaker 3: and he's looking after his son. So he calls up
- 6:47Speaker 3: Kurt Vonnegut, who's a friend of his, and writes a
- 6:49Speaker 3: paper and he gets like a d on it. And
- 6:52Speaker 3: the woman says, well, whoever wrote this paper clearly has
- 6:55Speaker 3: no idea about Kurt Vonnegut.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And k wrote the paper, So that's I love that.
- 7:00Speaker 3: That's like the revenge for the English seat you like,
- 7:02Speaker 3: or English student you're like, That's exactly what it's like
- 7:04Speaker 3: to be not Okay, I've listened, love you all, all
- 7:08Speaker 3: you English professors out there. I'm not trying to pick
- 7:09Speaker 3: on you anyway. So so learning all this new stuff,
- 7:13Speaker 3: hitting the triple Lindy out there on the left side,
- 7:16Speaker 3: is the hardest part, The neurological part.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Do you think. I think it's the hardest. The hardest
- 7:22Speaker 4: part because you're fighting your nature, right, You're fighting what
- 7:27Speaker 4: your experience is telling you, what your body is conditioned for.
- 7:32Speaker 4: You're fighting all of that conditioning and programming. So I
- 7:34Speaker 4: think that's where it becomes the toughest part is counteracting
- 7:39Speaker 4: what you've been taught and what you've been doing for
- 7:41Speaker 4: the last year. You've only been a right tackle, You've
- 7:45Speaker 4: only taken right tackle snaps, and now this year be
- 7:50Speaker 4: the left tackle. Believe the left tackle breed the left tackle.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You are the left tackle, and so you're fighting all
- 7:58Speaker 4: of that extra stuff that you had before. Throw it
- 8:00Speaker 4: out the window. We're starting from the ground floor again.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And I think that's what it is now. The blessing
- 8:06Speaker 4: that he has is he's done it before. This isn't
- 8:09Speaker 4: the first time he's had to do this. Whereas Broderick Jones.
- 8:11Speaker 4: When Broderick came in Projerick was just a left tackle
- 8:15Speaker 4: and then had to learn to play right tackle. Troy
- 8:17Speaker 4: at least has experience in college playing both, so it's
- 8:21Speaker 4: not as tough a transition because he's already gone through
- 8:23Speaker 4: it one time.
- 8:25Speaker 3: So have you, I'm trying to think. I know you've
- 8:29Speaker 3: been to Portugal, right, So have you ever been to
- 8:33Speaker 3: one of the British aisles where you drive on the
- 8:34Speaker 3: other side of the road?
- 8:37Speaker 4: One time? Okay, and I'll never do it again.
- 8:39Speaker 3: So I do it all the time when we travel
- 8:41Speaker 3: over there. My daughter lives in Scotland. When we go
- 8:44Speaker 3: over there, I said all the time, like I'm there
- 8:45Speaker 3: twice a year.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 8:47Speaker 3: But in the times that I've been over in Ireland
- 8:49Speaker 3: and Scotland, I love to drive myself. I like to
- 8:53Speaker 3: poke around and see different things, so I want to
- 8:55Speaker 3: be behind the wheel of a car. So you're driving
- 8:57Speaker 3: on the wrong side of the road, which is a
- 9:00Speaker 3: little freaky, and I'm trying to I'm wondering if this
- 9:02Speaker 3: is similar. And then right when you think you've got
- 9:06Speaker 3: it down because you're concentrating so hard on it, something
- 9:09Speaker 3: will take over, like the way you've always done it
- 9:12Speaker 3: for decades as a driver like me, and you'll come
- 9:16Speaker 3: up to like an intersection and.
- 9:19Speaker 4: You will just out you will be in the wrong place.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Right, You're going around and round about yeah, and you're thinking, okay,
- 9:24Speaker 3: I want to I need to go to the right.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Well you actually need to go to the left. And
- 9:28Speaker 3: then all of a sudden, and I've been there, man.
- 9:30Speaker 3: You know it's your jet lagged and you're leaving an
- 9:33Speaker 3: air you're leaving an airport. You got a rental car,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and you go the wrong way even though you're thinking
- 9:37Speaker 3: about it, and the horns start blaring and they know
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's a foreigner. You know, behind the wheel of a car.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But so no matter how you're thinking about it, I
- 9:45Speaker 3: guess my point is that instinct will take over, and
- 9:50Speaker 3: you've got to be able to drum that instinct out
- 9:52Speaker 3: of you if you want to drive and not get
- 9:55Speaker 3: in an accident and get the people in your car hurt.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Is it that way?
- 9:59Speaker 3: Do you get to a point where that instinct takes
- 10:01Speaker 3: over and you're like, oh, man, I moved the wrong
- 10:03Speaker 3: way because I've done that a thousand times and I've
- 10:06Speaker 3: only done this, you know, ten times, And.
- 10:09Speaker 4: That's exactly what is That's a perfect analogy, apples to apples,
- 10:11Speaker 4: and the roundabout is the perfect example because you know,
- 10:15Speaker 4: first of all, how often do you encounter roundabouts in America?
- 10:19Speaker 3: They're getting more common though, they're getting more and I'll
- 10:21Speaker 3: be a son of a gun if the things don't
- 10:23Speaker 3: work the first time I'm doing them, Like why are
- 10:25Speaker 3: these roundabouts?
- 10:26Speaker 2: Put a light here?
- 10:27Speaker 3: Then I'm like, that's actually a pretty good idea. There's
- 10:34Speaker 3: one outside of us, save it's a college.
- 10:35Speaker 4: There's a roundabout exactly, so you know, you get to that,
- 10:38Speaker 4: And that's a perfect example. Is well, every time I've
- 10:41Speaker 4: gone through a roundabout in America. I go right. But
- 10:44Speaker 4: here I get to this roundabout for the first time,
- 10:47Speaker 4: and I'm on the left side of the road. I
- 10:49Speaker 4: got to go to the left to go right, I
- 10:50Speaker 4: gotta take this long way around. Yes, it's like normally
- 10:53Speaker 4: that's the left turn that takes the long way around.
- 10:56Speaker 4: So that's a perfect example that leads me into it.
- 10:59Speaker 4: You're gonna to a point where a guy's gonna rush
- 11:01Speaker 4: down the middle of you, and your instinct is, oh, well,
- 11:06Speaker 4: I just need to drop my right leg and let
- 11:08Speaker 4: him keep going because that's the path I need him
- 11:10Speaker 4: to go as a right tackle. But I'm on the left.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Oh my god. Okay, I get think the battles that
- 11:14Speaker 4: you're fighting even harder to cut him off. So you
- 11:17Speaker 4: don't kill your quarterback because you just open the barn
- 11:19Speaker 4: door and just allow them a free rush to the inside.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Okay, now here's my next question. So, yes, there is
- 11:25Speaker 3: going to be some differences for Troy Foutano. Now, yeah,
- 11:29Speaker 3: I think there's a little bit less big picture question
- 11:34Speaker 3: before I ask you about working with Mason McCormick. A
- 11:37Speaker 3: little bit less of the premiere pass rusher always comes
- 11:42Speaker 3: from the blind side right, So the left tackle has
- 11:44Speaker 3: got to be your best guy. He's got to be
- 11:46Speaker 3: the guy who's gonna get paid. He's the guy we're
- 11:48Speaker 3: drafting in the first round.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Well. TJ.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Watson a great example of a guy who's on the
- 11:53Speaker 3: other side, But Miles Garrett a great example of a
- 11:56Speaker 3: guy who you never know where he's going to line up.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So I don't don't know. Do you think now the
- 12:03Speaker 3: left tackle is still the most important position on the
- 12:06Speaker 3: offensive line? Is it a twins just a little bit
- 12:11Speaker 3: less that we have to have a certain type of
- 12:16Speaker 3: guy there. So my point being Troy was excellent at
- 12:19Speaker 3: right tackle. Is he facing bigger obstacles and bigger changes
- 12:23Speaker 3: on the left tackle spot or has that changed a
- 12:26Speaker 3: little bit because of the way guys move around.
- 12:31Speaker 4: I think it's still an important side because it's still
- 12:33Speaker 4: an important side. Yes, it's still the more important side.
- 12:35Speaker 4: It's still the most important side because the quarterback can't
- 12:38Speaker 4: see right no matter who you put over there. The
- 12:41Speaker 4: quarterback has to trust you right no matter who they
- 12:44Speaker 4: line up. Now they have guys like also go along
- 12:47Speaker 4: with the T. J. Watt and Nick Bosa, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 4: lines up on the same offensive right, defensive left and
- 12:55Speaker 4: is effective from there as a more athletic guy now
- 12:58Speaker 4: at that left side, that the that the right tackle
- 13:02Speaker 4: has to be aware of. It has to be more athletic.
- 13:04Speaker 4: But once again, the quarterback can see an adjust that
- 13:07Speaker 4: a lot easier. Even though those guys are premier guys,
- 13:10Speaker 4: you're still getting the premier guy on the backside because
- 13:13Speaker 4: he's got to be the athletic one that has to
- 13:15Speaker 4: whip the block and he's the one that's going to
- 13:16Speaker 4: give the no man's lamb hit. Yeah, So that's why
- 13:20Speaker 4: I still think left tackle is the most important unless
- 13:23Speaker 4: you have a left handed quarterback. If the quarterback can't
- 13:25Speaker 4: see it, that's still what always makes it just danger.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Will Robinson right, for sure?
- 13:29Speaker 3: I yes, I thank you because you answered in a
- 13:32Speaker 3: way that took my poorly phrased question and put it
- 13:35Speaker 3: into context. I wasn't trying to ask is it still
- 13:38Speaker 3: the most important I was asking is are the are
- 13:41Speaker 3: the players? Are you still going against the premier pass rushers.
- 13:44Speaker 4: For years, you were.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Always going against their best guy, their Lawrence Taylor because
- 13:49Speaker 3: he was going to line up on that blind side
- 13:52Speaker 3: every single time.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Now I think.
- 13:55Speaker 3: There are, but it's still going to be a challenge
- 13:57Speaker 3: obviously moving from right to left. So irrespective of who
- 14:00Speaker 3: those players are, now, what about having a Mason McCormick
- 14:03Speaker 3: come next to him Max?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Is that a big deal?
- 14:06Speaker 3: Those two guys are used to working each other, Now
- 14:09Speaker 3: they're gonna be working. It reminds me of one of
- 14:12Speaker 3: one of the greatest lines of all time. You know,
- 14:14Speaker 3: Fred Astaire was a sorry, I'm going a few times.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Fredis the great dancer Fred and his dance partner was
- 14:20Speaker 3: Ginger Rogers, and you know, they somebody asked her, she's
- 14:25Speaker 3: a great dancer. Obviously, somebody asked her about, you know,
- 14:28Speaker 3: dancing with Fredister. What was it like dancing with somebody
- 14:31Speaker 3: who is that great? And she said, well, don't forget
- 14:34Speaker 3: that I was doing the same stuff that Fred was doing,
- 14:38Speaker 3: only I was moving backwards and I was in high heels.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Yeah, good point, Ginger.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So now, right, so now you have these guys, they're
- 14:49Speaker 3: they're they're they're not playing in high heels, believe me,
- 14:51Speaker 3: but they're doing it backward.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Right, they're on the left.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They're together again. Right, they're working in tandem again, but
- 15:00Speaker 3: it's on the left side. Is there going to be
- 15:03Speaker 3: a comfort level with both of those guys being switched.
- 15:07Speaker 3: A lot of times you'd just see we're moving the
- 15:09Speaker 3: right tackle to the left tackle. I thought it was
- 15:11Speaker 3: fascinating that they moved them both to the left side,
- 15:16Speaker 3: So they must think that that's going to help the
- 15:19Speaker 3: adjustment for both of them, that they're a unit. Did
- 15:22Speaker 3: you feel like it was a unit sort of thing
- 15:24Speaker 3: on the offensive line, left tackle, left guard.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Yeah. I think the combinations matter because they're used to communicating.
- 15:32Speaker 4: They know each other's idiosyncrasies, right, they know they know
- 15:35Speaker 4: how each other ticks. They've talked and communicated and made
- 15:39Speaker 4: calls to each other over the past year, so they
- 15:42Speaker 4: kind of have a familiarity with the voice, the cadence
- 15:45Speaker 4: that they're changing stuff. They could be more nuanced, and
- 15:48Speaker 4: I think that just speeds up that process. Having your
- 15:51Speaker 4: buddy over there with you, and also your buddy is
- 15:53Speaker 4: going to be learning with you. And granted, the guard
- 15:56Speaker 4: is going to be easier learning curve because you're in
- 15:57Speaker 4: a phone booth. Right, you have a funnel tackle sideboards,
- 16:01Speaker 4: there's a center there's a center sideboard, so you funnel
- 16:04Speaker 4: right to the guard. So the guard can be a
- 16:06Speaker 4: little bit narrower in stance and it's just a movement
- 16:08Speaker 4: thing for him. I think having him next to Troy
- 16:13Speaker 4: gives Troy a comfortability and ease of communication because Mason
- 16:17Speaker 4: also knows what Troy sees and what he doesn't see,
- 16:20Speaker 4: and vice versa. Troy knows what Mason sees and doesn't see,
- 16:23Speaker 4: and they're able to communicate with each other, and they
- 16:26Speaker 4: also know how each other likes to do things right.
- 16:28Speaker 4: You know, if Mason's free and comes for the outside block,
- 16:31Speaker 4: he knows that Mason's gonna come check inside and make
- 16:35Speaker 4: a B line for the guy that he's blocking is
- 16:37Speaker 4: probably gonna knock his block off, So you know that,
- 16:41Speaker 4: and you can anticipate because you've had that happen to
- 16:43Speaker 4: you in game, so you can anticipate what the support
- 16:46Speaker 4: looks like. I can be a little bit more heady
- 16:48Speaker 4: on the outside and be more aggressive because Mason's gonna
- 16:51Speaker 4: have my inside half right. There's a trust there, So
- 16:54Speaker 4: I think that's what really helps when you're thinking about it.
- 16:56Speaker 4: And Mike McCarthy cares a lot about those combinations. He
- 16:59Speaker 4: cares about those relationships that they have, and that's why
- 17:02Speaker 4: he did a full sale sit now. Granted, also Isaac
- 17:04Speaker 4: C Amalo's not here, so it presented a vacancy. I
- 17:07Speaker 4: don't think you would have moved Mason McCormick over there
- 17:09Speaker 4: if Isaac cmalo is still on the roster point, but
- 17:12Speaker 4: since we have a question at tackle, we have a
- 17:15Speaker 4: vacancy at left guard, I'd rather move both over.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's really interesting. I hadn't even it
- 17:22Speaker 3: hadn't even crossed my mind, frankly, that they would do
- 17:25Speaker 3: that until they did it. Now will it affect Zach
- 17:29Speaker 3: Frasier at all?
- 17:30Speaker 4: And that's where the biggest question is, how does Zach
- 17:33Speaker 4: react knowing that it's not to his right as a snaphand.
- 17:38Speaker 4: You know, how's that right guard position? Because you have
- 17:40Speaker 4: to think Zach snapping with his right hand, that's that's
- 17:43Speaker 4: an unprotected side, so that a gap is he never
- 17:46Speaker 4: had to worry because he knew Mason was going to
- 17:48Speaker 4: shut the door until he got his hand back up
- 17:49Speaker 4: right from snapping the ball underneath his legs. So now
- 17:52Speaker 4: who's the new guy. Is that new guy going to
- 17:54Speaker 4: protect him the same way on his snaphand interesting as
- 17:57Speaker 4: he did in the past. So that's going to be
- 18:00Speaker 4: a comfortability or you know, or Zach could be you know,
- 18:04Speaker 4: don't you know? That's about how I feel like. That's
- 18:07Speaker 4: how Zach talks.
- 18:08Speaker 3: That's fascinating. I hadn't thought about that with a snaphand.
- 18:11Speaker 4: So it's a protection thing and how you step because
- 18:14Speaker 4: you need to make sure that a gap is sealed
- 18:16Speaker 4: and secured until that point seven too point eight second
- 18:20Speaker 4: difference where he doesn't have that hand is he's securing
- 18:23Speaker 4: the snap to the quarterback under center. Shotguns a little
- 18:25Speaker 4: bit quicker because you can get the hand back up
- 18:27Speaker 4: because you're not worrying about feel of the quarterback, you know,
- 18:31Speaker 4: making sure it gets into his hands and hits the palms.
- 18:33Speaker 4: So that's gonna be a difference for him. So right
- 18:36Speaker 4: now it looks like it's not an issue because Spencer
- 18:38Speaker 4: Anderson has obviously been a swing guy on that interior.
- 18:41Speaker 4: But how does that job look seventeen weeks in a row.
- 18:45Speaker 4: How does that look from snap to snap, series to series,
- 18:48Speaker 4: defender to defender that comes in there. So that's gonna
- 18:52Speaker 4: be new for Zach to get used to, is who's
- 18:53Speaker 4: on his right, because that's the biggest thing is that
- 18:56Speaker 4: you know, Mason was a guy that was looking and
- 18:59Speaker 4: was and was there while Spencer was the one tapping
- 19:02Speaker 4: the butt and making the calls, or Isaac Camalo was
- 19:05Speaker 4: that guy. So now you're flipping those roles. Now, do
- 19:08Speaker 4: you carry that over and have Mason do that from
- 19:10Speaker 4: the left now so that Spencer can be free of
- 19:13Speaker 4: that and all I can worry about is just protecting
- 19:15Speaker 4: the snaphand on any given pass play. That's gonna be Well,
- 19:19Speaker 4: I'm still waiting to see because we haven't really seen.
- 19:22Speaker 4: I haven't seen that operation in a live, live situation
- 19:25Speaker 4: because normally by team section it's competitive, but it's not
- 19:29Speaker 4: like a game. You know.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Boy, I'm so glad I asked that question. It's a
- 19:31Speaker 3: great answer because frankly, I was just going to stick
- 19:34Speaker 3: with the guard tackle combinations. And I'm glad I asked
- 19:36Speaker 3: that question, and I hope fans are glad I asked
- 19:38Speaker 3: it too, because it's it's a really I hadn't thought
- 19:42Speaker 3: about it. That's why it's so great to have an
- 19:43Speaker 3: offense alive and sitting next to me. Yeah, it's good stuff,
- 19:47Speaker 3: or all the questions.
- 19:48Speaker 4: That's good stuff. Well, we're gonna stick out.
- 19:49Speaker 3: We're gonna get back to that right side of the
- 19:52Speaker 3: offense line. Some other news from around camp as well,

- 20:53Speaker 3: And welcome back to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. As
- 20:57Speaker 3: we're talking offensive line, so you know, I think the
- 21:01Speaker 3: expectation is Zach Frazier is going to be absolutely fine.
- 21:04Speaker 3: We're not worried about that at all. That the left side,
- 21:07Speaker 3: whereas you could see a hiccup or two possibly, it's
- 21:12Speaker 3: going to be just fine. I want to get to
- 21:14Speaker 3: the right side in a moment. But I do want
- 21:16Speaker 3: to ask you, do you think that a couple of
- 21:21Speaker 3: more reps, maybe a couple of more series, maybe even
- 21:24Speaker 3: extra to quarter would benefit those guys on the left
- 21:28Speaker 3: side in preseason or do you think they don't need it?
- 21:31Speaker 4: I will say this so before I answer your question,
- 21:33Speaker 4: I have to make an announcement. Okay, I have now
- 21:36Speaker 4: officially switched from the right side to the left side
- 21:38Speaker 4: with my headset. Yes, that's good, that's good. It's a
- 21:41Speaker 4: big moment. I wanted to make sure everybody knew, and
- 21:44Speaker 4: I can tell you that I feel good at the left.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I feel good at the.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Left right now. So I think you know answer your question.
- 21:51Speaker 3: So let me tell you why this is important. Okay,
- 21:54Speaker 3: So people are listening on the radio. I can't see us.
- 21:56Speaker 3: I'm sitting on the left, which is where I sit
- 21:58Speaker 3: in the broadcast when we're calling the games. Max is
- 22:01Speaker 3: sitting to the right, and so there we have headsets on,
- 22:05Speaker 3: and the headsets there's a little arm bar that comes
- 22:08Speaker 3: out and the microphone is in front of your mouth,
- 22:11Speaker 3: but it's not quite in front of your mouth. It's
- 22:13Speaker 3: a little bit angled to one side. The side that
- 22:16Speaker 3: is coming out of the armbar. So when I turn
- 22:19Speaker 3: to Max to and I turn to my right, I'm
- 22:21Speaker 3: turning toward the microphone. Correct, and so therefore hopefully so
- 22:25Speaker 3: now you can't see me on the radio. But now
- 22:27Speaker 3: I'm turning to the right, and the audio quality remains
- 22:30Speaker 3: the same. And Justin Miller, who's back at the controls,
- 22:34Speaker 3: doesn't have to pot up or down my audio. He's happy, exactly,
- 22:38Speaker 3: said Justin.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Are you happy? Right now?
- 22:41Speaker 3: We have Justin Miller, We have Justin pot yourself up,
- 22:43Speaker 3: Justin let us know if you're happy.
- 22:45Speaker 4: He might just be so happy that he can't. Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 3: So Max had it on the right, so if he
- 22:50Speaker 3: would turn to the left and face me, because we're
- 22:52Speaker 3: human beings, sentient beings talking to each other, so we're
- 22:56Speaker 3: gonna look at each other. Yeah, yeah, then that now
- 22:59Speaker 3: he's turning to the microphone. Therefore he's he's moved it
- 23:02Speaker 3: from his right side. So if he was turning from
- 23:03Speaker 3: his right to his left, he'd be turning away from
- 23:05Speaker 3: that microphone. Correct, So so watch out the difference in
- 23:09Speaker 3: my audio. So here I'm talking. See, so you can't.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Have that exactly, And I think making that that that
- 23:16Speaker 4: game time because we have new headsets also about it,
- 23:19Speaker 4: also new headsets, so getting used to it. And the
- 23:25Speaker 4: sound is more focalized, right because the old one was
- 23:28Speaker 4: a bigger mount so you could have that variance and
- 23:31Speaker 4: it could be on my right side and I could
- 23:32Speaker 4: turn left because it had a bigger receiver to catch
- 23:35Speaker 4: my voice. This one's a little bit more pointed, almost
- 23:38Speaker 4: like a little like mini ice cream cone, and it's directed,
- 23:42Speaker 4: so I need to have make sure that I'm on
- 23:44Speaker 4: top of it and that you can hear me clearly
- 23:46Speaker 4: when I turn away and look at Rob. So I've
- 23:48Speaker 4: made that switch to the left side. So well done.
- 23:50Speaker 4: There you go. We just told you how the sausage
- 23:52Speaker 4: was made, and now that I'm on the left side,
- 23:55Speaker 4: I can now communicate about left side things.
- 23:58Speaker 3: So do they will they or do they mean? And
- 24:02Speaker 3: again we don't know. Look, there's a lot that goes
- 24:04Speaker 3: into into preseason games, some of it.
- 24:07Speaker 4: You know.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Mike McCarthy's been on load management. He talked about, you know,
- 24:10Speaker 3: having a super physical camp early on in Green Bay
- 24:14Speaker 3: and his team was fried by week ten, you know,
- 24:17Speaker 3: so he doesn't want to do that. So load management
- 24:19Speaker 3: is part of this. And but do you think it
- 24:22Speaker 3: would be whove those guys to have extra reps. Do
- 24:25Speaker 3: you think it doesn't matter that much to have extra
- 24:27Speaker 3: reps to see some live things going on as they
- 24:30Speaker 3: acclimate moving and I'm talking now about McCormick and fout
- 24:33Speaker 3: Tana as they acclimate moving from the right side to
- 24:36Speaker 3: the left.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Side, I think they will get the rest because I
- 24:39Speaker 4: think because of the right tackle battle, you'll have to
- 24:44Speaker 4: keep them in to get fair comparisons. So I think
- 24:47Speaker 4: they will get a couple more rest because you'll have
- 24:49Speaker 4: Dylan Cook over there, Maxian Achure right, and you'll also
- 24:53Speaker 4: have Brock and Spencer, so you won't have necessarily the
- 24:57Speaker 4: swing guys to go over there and relieve them while
- 24:59Speaker 4: the others are all right, So you will probably see
- 25:02Speaker 4: a little bit more. Thing I thought, again, I trust
- 25:06Speaker 4: your lineman, yes, not only on what they see on
- 25:09Speaker 4: the field, but also when we're going to eat trust
- 25:11Speaker 4: where alignment right now? Oh that's a that's a definite
- 25:14Speaker 4: two cardinal rules there. But yeah, so I think you
- 25:17Speaker 4: are going to see them a little bit more just
- 25:19Speaker 4: because there's an open battle on the right.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Okay, so let's talk about the open battle on the
- 25:23Speaker 3: right because that's going to be a big one. Do
- 25:26Speaker 3: you sense that it's going a certain way? And you
- 25:30Speaker 3: know what, forget that it's way too early to tell.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Let let's jump into what it's going to be the
- 25:34Speaker 3: main event, because I'm sure we'll get into this as
- 25:36Speaker 3: we get closer about the most important things we're going
- 25:39Speaker 3: to watch.
- 25:40Speaker 4: That's going to be one of them. For me?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Is that right side of the offensive line?
- 25:44Speaker 4: Do you think.
- 25:46Speaker 3: That will have a larger impact than it might normally
- 25:52Speaker 3: how these guys perform. So, for example, unless there is
- 25:56Speaker 3: a an unexpected oh my gosh, have you seen we
- 25:59Speaker 3: got swinging gate in that left side, they're gonna be fine.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Right now, the expectation is gonna be fine. Is it
- 26:04Speaker 3: going to be a smooth road? You hope it is.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Is it gonna be bumpy? That wouldn't be unexpected. The
- 26:09Speaker 3: right side is all about competing for spots exactly. Yes,
- 26:12Speaker 3: So I would imagine that those performances and you're trying again,
- 26:17Speaker 3: I mean like, think about you know, the backup quarterback position,
- 26:21Speaker 3: right you want you want whoever that is battling for
- 26:25Speaker 3: the backup quarters backspot to not be overwhelmed.
- 26:28Speaker 4: If they're a young guy.
- 26:29Speaker 3: But to be given a fair shake against other teams
- 26:32Speaker 3: better defenses. So we see it all the time in
- 26:35Speaker 3: training camp, geting, Oh my, that running back ran eleven
- 26:39Speaker 3: times for eighty eight yards.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Yeah against two Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Right, so that is that's important. Yeah, and maybe your
- 26:46Speaker 3: third string line is better than their third string line. Okay,
- 26:49Speaker 3: well that's not gonna matter because none of those guys
- 26:51Speaker 3: are gonna be on your team exactly.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And you're and it's like, like I said, Michael Parsons
- 26:57Speaker 4: isn't playing in this game. He's injured, But you can't
- 27:01Speaker 4: extrapolate who the third outside backer is thinking, ah, man,
- 27:05Speaker 4: well if that was Michael Parsons, you know he would
- 27:07Speaker 4: have done. Know, you don't know, right, you don't know.
- 27:10Speaker 4: But compared to what they have, our threes are better
- 27:13Speaker 4: than your threes. That's great. But can that three be
- 27:16Speaker 4: a one? Right? Right? Can that three play up to
- 27:20Speaker 4: the level of competing against one level talent? Can they
- 27:23Speaker 4: raise their game? All things equal, looks good, but can
- 27:27Speaker 4: you raise your game? Can you take it to another level?
- 27:29Speaker 4: Can you go another gear to get ready for what
- 27:32Speaker 4: NFL starting talent looks like? In week seven? Right in
- 27:36Speaker 4: week thirteen, where like its pressure is on the fire,
- 27:40Speaker 4: and you've got to make sure that you are playing
- 27:43Speaker 4: because you're playing for first place in your division, you're
- 27:45Speaker 4: playing for a playoff spot. Can you answer the call
- 27:48Speaker 4: and be ready for that guy on third and eight right,
- 27:50Speaker 4: he's got his ears pinned back, like that's what you're
- 27:53Speaker 4: looking for in this And I think for the preseason
- 27:57Speaker 4: you're not necessarily gonna get that because obviously they like
- 27:59Speaker 4: shitting them on their first string guys. But the guys
- 28:01Speaker 4: you are gonna put out there early in that game,
- 28:03Speaker 4: those guys matter because those guys are guys fighting for
- 28:05Speaker 4: roster spots. Those are guys are gonna be rotational guys
- 28:08Speaker 4: defensively because the same guys don't play every snap. So
- 28:12Speaker 4: you're gonna get NFL quality talent and how do they
- 28:15Speaker 4: look on from one game to the next. And that's
- 28:17Speaker 4: why I think you will see a little more Troy
- 28:19Speaker 4: and Mason on the left to make sure you give
- 28:22Speaker 4: the right side a fair shake so that Dylan gets
- 28:25Speaker 4: fresh reps at right tackle, and then Maxianchure gets the
- 28:28Speaker 4: fresh reps and also Broderick Jones gets the fresh reps
- 28:31Speaker 4: as much as possible, and then whatever they didn't get
- 28:33Speaker 4: in that first game. They'll get it in the second
- 28:34Speaker 4: game against the Jets, right, so you're going to see
- 28:38Speaker 4: a little bit more of that first line and Aaron's
- 28:40Speaker 4: playing in the first two preseason games. Remember that that
- 28:43Speaker 4: was what was talked about. Mike McCarthy said, Hey, I
- 28:46Speaker 4: want you to play in the in the Green Bay
- 28:48Speaker 4: and the Jets game. He's gonna play in the Green
- 28:50Speaker 4: Band in the Jets and he hasn't really had meaningful
- 28:52Speaker 4: preseason napsince twenty eighteen. So now you got your ace
- 28:56Speaker 4: back there. This is the guy you need to ride with.
- 28:58Speaker 4: I'm gonna keep the best protection out there possible.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah, of kind of important, kind of important to keep.
- 29:03Speaker 4: You can't give a OLA or a lookout block.
- 29:07Speaker 3: No no, no, no, no no no no, no, no,
- 29:10Speaker 3: no no. He's got to be out there. And uh
- 29:13Speaker 3: and I think that's I think that's really interesting.
- 29:18Speaker 4: I'm for it, Max for it. Get out there. These
- 29:21Speaker 4: aren't meaningless games. These are evaluation opportunities for how good
- 29:26Speaker 4: my team can be. And I need to make sure
- 29:28Speaker 4: that I'm getting the best guys because once again, there's
- 29:31Speaker 4: a lot of talent out here, right, So you can't
- 29:33Speaker 4: just kind of blow off the games in these moments
- 29:35Speaker 4: because you're getting you need a fair evaluation to make
- 29:38Speaker 4: sure you're putting the best guys out there, because, like
- 29:39Speaker 4: I said, you're gonna end up cutting a guy that's
- 29:42Speaker 4: going to contribute on another team. So make sure we
- 29:46Speaker 4: get the best of those options and the guy that
- 29:48Speaker 4: goes to the other team is not our best.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Option, right, and then sharpening guys up like Aaron Rodgers.
- 29:54Speaker 3: I think that's a really interesting decision. It kind of
- 29:56Speaker 3: goes against a lot of the trends. And yet, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 3: sometimes a team will kind of ease into what they're
- 30:04Speaker 3: trying to do.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Matthew Staffer's not playing a preseason game. Yeah, your off's
- 30:10Speaker 4: not playing a preseason game.
- 30:11Speaker 3: Now, I will say this, those guys are they are
- 30:15Speaker 3: not running new offenses.
- 30:18Speaker 4: They also yet you're correct they are not. Now. Granted,
- 30:21Speaker 4: you could also argue Aaron's not running a new right either.
- 30:24Speaker 4: He's familiar with this. He's running an old office. He
- 30:26Speaker 4: just hasn't run it recently. That's really true. Yeah, Okay,
- 30:31Speaker 4: so it's still plenty to get to.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Unfortunately, more to get to than we have time for,
- 30:35Speaker 3: including that roster move that we haven't gotten to that

- 31:53Speaker 3: because I literally don't know. Yeah, but I do know
- 31:56Speaker 3: that the I do know that the fine Italian restaurant
- 31:58Speaker 3: there is Don't Do It is still open.
- 32:00Speaker 4: That Italian wedding soup is still one of my favorite
- 32:03Speaker 4: the muscles as well another another crowd favorite there when
- 32:07Speaker 4: when me and my my buddies usually descend on there,
- 32:10Speaker 4: we'll usually go there one or two times during training camp.
- 32:12Speaker 4: I haven't made my first visit yet, but just know
- 32:15Speaker 4: that when I go there, I'm always giving me the
- 32:17Speaker 4: wedding soup. I love it. It's good stuff.
- 32:19Speaker 3: So when it comes to these preseason football games and
- 32:25Speaker 3: ascertaining who's going to start at right guard, right tackle, look,
- 32:29Speaker 3: I know there's other things involved. Are they in the
- 32:33Speaker 3: meetings paying attention in meetings? Do they know what's going on?
- 32:37Speaker 3: You know, it's not just about did he flatten somebody
- 32:40Speaker 3: or pancake somebody or make a wow play like so
- 32:44Speaker 3: you know we can see somebody make a splash play
- 32:46Speaker 3: even if they're running with the ones, and you know,
- 32:51Speaker 3: maybe they're not. Maybe they don't. They lucked into it.
- 32:54Speaker 3: They don't know, you know, in a critical moment when
- 32:58Speaker 3: they need to run a quick stop and Aaron Rodgers
- 33:02Speaker 3: is gonna get up and throw that stop pattern and
- 33:04Speaker 3: he throws the ball and they're running the slant that
- 33:07Speaker 3: was called because he didn't recognize the defense, and it
- 33:09Speaker 3: goes right into the chest to the defender who.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Takes it for a pick six.
- 33:12Speaker 3: That's the stuff you can't ascertain necessarily by watching a
- 33:16Speaker 3: preseason game. So the point being, it's not just what
- 33:21Speaker 3: we're gonna see, but it feels to me Max like
- 33:26Speaker 3: there are legitimate jobs on the line at right guard,
- 33:30Speaker 3: at right tackle that will largely be one or lost
- 33:36Speaker 3: in preseason games. Do you think that's accurate?
- 33:39Speaker 4: I think it is okay. As far as starting roles, Yeah,
- 33:42Speaker 4: that's right. As far as starting roles go, those are
- 33:45Speaker 4: the two because I think everywhere else you look, starters
- 33:48Speaker 4: are pretty much slated. You know who the starter is
- 33:51Speaker 4: going to be. And maybe there's a rotational type of thing,
- 33:55Speaker 4: especially defensively, about how those guys insert when they play,
- 33:59Speaker 4: who starts game based on personnel. All those things are subjective,
- 34:04Speaker 4: but when you're talking about a starting position that will
- 34:07Speaker 4: be one specifically off of preseason games in training camp,
- 34:12Speaker 4: it's the right garden, right tackle position. Those are two
- 34:14Speaker 4: open positions here in camp. I think we know who
- 34:17Speaker 4: the number two receiver is, Michael Pittman, and then you
- 34:21Speaker 4: have upside for your number three's Roman Wilson, Jeremy Bernard,
- 34:25Speaker 4: Kayden wegen Wright, insert names here, and then you'll kind
- 34:29Speaker 4: of fill out your five to six receivers that you'll
- 34:31Speaker 4: keep running back. We know is Rico Dadele and Jalen Warren.
- 34:34Speaker 4: However you deploy them as a completely different thing. Mike
- 34:37Speaker 4: McCarthy talked about that today, talking about I don't want
- 34:40Speaker 4: to have He's like one of the things why the
- 34:42Speaker 4: guys play as much as they do. I don't want
- 34:44Speaker 4: to worry about who's in on third down. I don't
- 34:46Speaker 4: want to think about what guy I need to put
- 34:48Speaker 4: in there, so we know who they are, and then
- 34:51Speaker 4: after that we'll figure out whether that's Caleb Johnson, Travis Homer,
- 34:56Speaker 4: Lou Nichols, Eli hyden Reich and company. Right tight end,
- 35:01Speaker 4: Dona W. Washington just got paid, Pat Fryarm has been paid. Yes,
- 35:04Speaker 4: we know those are your top two, is it Robert Tanyan,
- 35:07Speaker 4: Is it Lake Lake McCree, is it somebody else? Right,
- 35:11Speaker 4: That's where we're figuring out who the third guy is.
- 35:13Speaker 4: But as far as starters, when I name the I
- 35:16Speaker 4: name the starting position. Aaron Rodgers is the starting quarterback. Yes,
- 35:20Speaker 4: otherwise noted. Right, those are the things we know. So
- 35:23Speaker 4: backup positions might alternate and change, and those might be
- 35:26Speaker 4: other side battles, but those are the two that are
- 35:30Speaker 4: going to affect because offensive linemen, it's the Spartan methodology, right,
- 35:35Speaker 4: when you go out there as a starter, come back
- 35:37Speaker 4: with your shielder on it. But the only way you're
- 35:39Speaker 4: getting out is an injury situation. We're we're not flip
- 35:43Speaker 4: flopping lines. We're not flip flopping players based on situations.
- 35:47Speaker 4: You're in as long as you're healthy, as long as
- 35:50Speaker 4: you're doing your job, you are in there. There's no
- 35:53Speaker 4: sub package that doesn't have you at alignment like Spencer Anderson, right,
- 35:56Speaker 4: the sixth of ol Linman type of deal, extra tight
- 35:59Speaker 4: end type of deal. But that's it. And so I
- 36:03Speaker 4: think you're absolutely right, those are the two that we're
- 36:05Speaker 4: going to stay with once they are announced, and it's
- 36:08Speaker 4: going to be one in training campus going to be
- 36:10Speaker 4: an open competition until we have final cuts. Yeap.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I totally agree with all of that. I agree that
- 36:19Speaker 3: I just don't think there are that many. I don't
- 36:22Speaker 3: think you're any any front line positions open except right
- 36:28Speaker 3: guard and right tackle. I think that's why I respect,
- 36:30Speaker 3: That's why I've spent an entire show talking about this,
- 36:33Speaker 3: because I think that's it.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Max. They are the battles. They are the battles because
- 36:38Speaker 4: we know who our top three pass rushers are, right right,
- 36:41Speaker 4: dj Alex and Nick Kurbick. You know the corner four. Yep,
- 36:45Speaker 4: we know who the corners are. Joey Porter Junior did
- 36:47Speaker 4: not lose his job by not practicing, but having Jamel
- 36:50Speaker 4: Din and Sante Samuel now is like, okay, well, which
- 36:53Speaker 4: one do we want to start? Depends on who we got.
- 36:55Speaker 4: We have options, right, We know that Jakwan Brisker and
- 36:58Speaker 4: Deshaun Elliott are two says, but we also love the
- 37:01Speaker 4: fact that we can add a couple extra guys. Sebastian Castro.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Where does he fit into this right now? Where do
- 37:07Speaker 4: these other pieces fit in there? Linebacker Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Are we having much talk about that? Nope? But we're saying,
- 37:14Speaker 4: Malie Harrison called Holkom, Carson, Brunner and company. Who fills
- 37:19Speaker 4: in there? Henderson? Where do these guys fill in on
- 37:22Speaker 4: that D line? We know that cam Herward ain't going nowhere,
- 37:26Speaker 4: Keanu Binnen ain't going nowhere, Derek Harmon ain't going anywhere, right,
- 37:30Speaker 4: and then we have a pretty good idea that Sebastian
- 37:33Speaker 4: Joseph Day you brought him in a free agency, He's
- 37:35Speaker 4: going to be there, right. We know also after that
- 37:39Speaker 4: you're gonna have ya Black, He's going to be there. Yep.
- 37:41Speaker 4: Now the question is who's six, seven, eight right right
- 37:44Speaker 4: for that D line or nine? However, however many they
- 37:47Speaker 4: keep on the D line. That's what you're fighting for.
- 37:49Speaker 4: You're fighting for the back end of the depth, right.
- 37:52Speaker 4: But this is the first and only two front line
- 37:55Speaker 4: positions that are open that are going to be dictated
- 37:58Speaker 4: that you're gonna watch live how good or bad they do.
- 38:01Speaker 3: And those are all interesting battles. But yes, this is
- 38:04Speaker 3: front and center for me.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Now.
- 38:06Speaker 3: Sometimes you know again you talk, and I think it's
- 38:09Speaker 3: really interesting that Mike McCarthy's talked about units of two
- 38:12Speaker 3: or three. I think that we all think about units.
- 38:15Speaker 3: When it comes to say the wide receiver position. That's
- 38:18Speaker 3: that might be the easiest to look at that and
- 38:21Speaker 3: defense it back when you start to go into nickel
- 38:23Speaker 3: and dime, and you know, sometimes there's just a missing
- 38:28Speaker 3: piece in that. That's that causes the engine to splutter
- 38:32Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, And it's just but but
- 38:34Speaker 3: I will also say this. We know you know if
- 38:39Speaker 3: you took that engine apart and said, what are the
- 38:41Speaker 3: pieces there? Well, the pieces are going to be Jamel Dean,
- 38:44Speaker 3: Joey Porter Jr. Jalen Ramsey, Sean Elliott. You know you
- 38:48Speaker 3: know who the pieces are gonna be Samuel now right now?
- 38:51Speaker 3: So now yeah, now it's hey, are we better off?
- 38:56Speaker 4: You know? Well, will it run smoothly? At all times?
- 38:58Speaker 4: Will run smoothly?
- 38:59Speaker 3: If a Sante Samuel Junior's been an outside guy, you're
- 39:02Speaker 3: just saying for you you know, he's in the slaughter,
- 39:04Speaker 3: Echoes is in the slaughter. Ramsey's in the slaughter. No,
- 39:07Speaker 3: Ramsey's at safety. What is the best combination of those things?
- 39:11Speaker 3: Can one guy on an offensive line cause that engine
- 39:16Speaker 3: to splutter? Or would you need so you replace just
- 39:21Speaker 3: that one piece and it all comes together? Or is
- 39:24Speaker 3: that just an oversimplification of what the importance of one position.
- 39:28Speaker 4: No, it does matter because you're only strong as your
- 39:30Speaker 4: weakest link. Right, you've heard that. We've heard that phrase
- 39:33Speaker 4: a lot in our life. But for the offensive line,
- 39:35Speaker 4: that's what matters. Like it has to be five guys
- 39:37Speaker 4: as one. You can't have four in a wildcard. You
- 39:40Speaker 4: can't have three and two possibles, right if we're talking
- 39:43Speaker 4: cards and play spades a lot. So that's where the
- 39:45Speaker 4: possible comes in. You've got to have five guys that
- 39:48Speaker 4: you believe is the best five combination together. And that's
- 39:53Speaker 4: how you have to operate. If you have one squeaky
- 39:56Speaker 4: wheel or one sputtering part, it collapses because now they
- 40:03Speaker 4: found their way in. Right. It's just like you know
- 40:06Speaker 4: you talk about, you know, a break in a dam
- 40:10Speaker 4: or a dyke, right, you know that once that little
- 40:13Speaker 4: water leak creeps in there, it keeps going, keeps going,
- 40:17Speaker 4: keeps going, keeps becoming a bigger problem. And now we've
- 40:19Speaker 4: got to figure out how do we patch it? And
- 40:21Speaker 4: do you patch it with an extra guy blocking? A
- 40:25Speaker 4: year ago we ran our best football when we were
- 40:28Speaker 4: in twelve and thirteen personnel. Why because we had to
- 40:30Speaker 4: bring Spencer Anderson and be an extra tight end. Yeah,
- 40:32Speaker 4: we a six offensive linemen to run the football effectively.
- 40:36Speaker 4: There's a weakness there. If you can't run with your five,
- 40:39Speaker 4: there's a problem. And they were trying to patch it
- 40:41Speaker 4: the entire time. Now you don't have that option. We
- 40:44Speaker 4: need to run with five. And I'm not going to
- 40:46Speaker 4: make any assumptions about what we need to do. I
- 40:50Speaker 4: just need it answered. And there's a lot of different
- 40:53Speaker 4: answers in different parts you can fit in may Maybe
- 40:56Speaker 4: I need an eddel Brock header. Maybe the factory one
- 40:59Speaker 4: wasn't working good enough on this engine. Maybe I need
- 41:02Speaker 4: to switch to Mopar. Right, you know, you start figuring
- 41:04Speaker 4: HEMI right, what's gonna be the best piece that's gonna
- 41:08Speaker 4: fit to make this engine as effective and run as
- 41:12Speaker 4: fast as it can? And intake system? Do I need
- 41:15Speaker 4: a blower or can I just trust that the regular
- 41:18Speaker 4: intake is gonna be great? You know you're looking for
- 41:20Speaker 4: all these different adjustments and aftermarket parts to make it
- 41:24Speaker 4: be more efficient. But that's what you gotta have. You
- 41:28Speaker 4: got to have the best pieces there to make this
- 41:30Speaker 4: offense run the best. And for an offensive line, you
- 41:32Speaker 4: can't have a weak offensive linement. Right, You've got to
- 41:35Speaker 4: have strong parts all around, and they have to have
- 41:37Speaker 4: different strengths. I'm not saying they all need to be
- 41:39Speaker 4: exactly the same. We're not gonna put five Zack Frasiers
- 41:41Speaker 4: out there, right, because it's not gonna work, you know,
- 41:43Speaker 4: because Zach is better at center. Zach. I don't think
- 41:47Speaker 4: it's a great left tackle, right, you know what I'm saying.
- 41:50Speaker 4: But I need to put the best left tackle out
- 41:51Speaker 4: there that makes a quarterback feel comfortable, right, that can
- 41:55Speaker 4: communicate cleanly with the rest of his line, that him
- 41:58Speaker 4: and the left guard vibe together or flow together. That's
- 42:01Speaker 4: been another big key phrase here. Flow. Mike McCarthy wants
- 42:04Speaker 4: to see flow in practice. Okay, so how well does
- 42:07Speaker 4: that flow? I don't need a clog in the communication highway, right,
- 42:12Speaker 4: I don't need congestion. I need free flow between all
- 42:15Speaker 4: five guys. So you're looking for the best combination of five,
- 42:18Speaker 4: not necessarily the five best players, but the five best
- 42:21Speaker 4: players that work together. Yeah, that was leading to my
- 42:24Speaker 4: next question.
- 42:25Speaker 3: So, I mean, it's the two guys who are gonna
- 42:31Speaker 3: work best with the three guys you already know who
- 42:33Speaker 3: are starting, right, it's incumbent upon them to find a
- 42:37Speaker 3: way to fit into that machine.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Correct, Ye, shave a little bit off the edge because
- 42:41Speaker 4: you're a square peg. You need a little more oval. Okay,
- 42:44Speaker 4: but you're not quite a round peg, you know. You know. Hey,
- 42:47Speaker 4: We're going to see how this works and can it
- 42:50Speaker 4: build over the season. Also, there's a little bit of
- 42:52Speaker 4: projection in there. Can this get better? Is it good
- 42:55Speaker 4: enough now? And can it get better by the end
- 42:57Speaker 4: of the year. That's what the projection is. So a
- 43:01Speaker 4: guy like Maxianachure, I have no idea what he's gonna
- 43:05Speaker 4: look like in the pros. I only know what he
- 43:08Speaker 4: did in college. Does that college Max now become a
- 43:12Speaker 4: better option as a promax or is it Dylan Cook
- 43:16Speaker 4: who showed me great strides at left? But does that
- 43:19Speaker 4: translate to the right? Spencer Anderson is good at five positions,
- 43:24Speaker 4: but can he be great at one position? Right? Those
- 43:27Speaker 4: are the questions we're looking to answer. Brock Hofflin was
- 43:30Speaker 4: really good in Dallas. Can he be really good here
- 43:35Speaker 4: in Pittsburgh? Those are the questions. Look at Roderick Jones,
- 43:39Speaker 4: can you go back to the right or do you
- 43:42Speaker 4: need to compete for the left? Because that's what you are.
- 43:46Speaker 4: I need to answer that, and that's what the opportunities
- 43:48Speaker 4: are going to give during this whole process is can
- 43:53Speaker 4: they do that? Can they make that conversion?
- 43:54Speaker 3: Okay, so final question for you in that regard if
- 43:58Speaker 3: it and I you know, would hate a player to
- 44:01Speaker 3: be damned for position flexibility, but if if things were
- 44:06Speaker 3: relatively even, and and there's almost no such thing, right,
- 44:10Speaker 3: there's no such thing as as one hundred percent even,
- 44:14Speaker 3: but if things were relatively even, max, does could position
- 44:20Speaker 3: flexibility actually hurt a guy? You know the fact that
- 44:25Speaker 3: he could potentially Thank you, I just knocked over a
- 44:32Speaker 3: a can that's spilled all over.
- 44:34Speaker 4: The you're electronics. I was like, yeah, so.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Will could that flexibility hurt somebody? Where the coach says,
- 44:43Speaker 3: you know what, it's pretty close. But if there's an injury,
- 44:48Speaker 3: now I got to move the right tackle to left guard,
- 44:50Speaker 3: the left guard, the center of the center to left
- 44:52Speaker 3: tack or I could just say I got one guy
- 44:54Speaker 3: that can play all those positions.
- 44:56Speaker 4: I could just plug him in.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Could that flexibility actually against the guy trying to start?
- 45:02Speaker 3: Are you just going to start the best five and
- 45:04Speaker 3: worry about that stuff as it comes up?
- 45:06Speaker 4: Over the course of a game. I think you have
- 45:08Speaker 4: to take it as such, who's the best guy for
- 45:10Speaker 4: the job at hand, right, and then we can worry
- 45:14Speaker 4: about the backup guy afterwards.
- 45:16Speaker 3: I think so too, But I think it's worth pointing
- 45:19Speaker 3: out because people talk about position flexibility all the time.
- 45:22Speaker 4: Let's not over sell that.
- 45:23Speaker 3: Yeah, versus starting and playing hopefully every snap of every game.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Yeah, the jack of all Tray's master of none methodology. Right,
- 45:30Speaker 4: you don't want that, but it's good to know that. Hey,
- 45:34Speaker 4: he might be struggling right now, but don't forget he's
- 45:37Speaker 4: a valuable piece because this dude can go everywhere. Right now,
- 45:40Speaker 4: it might.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Yeah, so if as long as it as long as
- 45:43Speaker 3: it doesn't hurt you in your in your in your
- 45:47Speaker 3: efforts to start, can't hurt you when.
- 45:50Speaker 4: It comes to trying to make the team. Yeah, help.
- 45:54Speaker 5: Number I can either be number five on this list
- 45:56Speaker 5: or I know I'm not falling below eight, right, getting
- 46:00Speaker 5: a helmet, whether it starts the game or whether I
- 46:03Speaker 5: get inserted during the game.
- 46:04Speaker 4: He's Max Starks, I'm Robed King. We always enjoy being
- 46:07Speaker 4: with you.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Day off tomorrow, We'll be back on these airwaves on Thursday.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Looking forward to things ramping up. The ramp up is over.
- 46:17Speaker 4: We are ready to go.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Everyone's gonna get ready to take scrimmage on Saturday. Would
- 46:23Speaker 3: imagine we'll see some We'll see some testosteron let's say
- 46:29Speaker 3: on Thursday and Friday.
- 46:30Speaker 4: It would be fun. Clap Yeah, he's Max Starks. I'm
- 46:34Speaker 4: Rob King.
- 46:34Speaker 3: The Drive is coming up next with Wes and Matt.
- 46:38Speaker 3: We thank you for being with us in the locker
- 46:40Speaker 3: room here and this year there's Audio Network
