- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. You know how I know
- 0:08Speaker 1: that my dad is still looking as always at us
- 0:13Speaker 1: from above and protecting us and watching over. Same with
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cardinal O'Connor, who we did honor twenty five years ago
- 0:24Speaker 1: today with his funeral, and I was, as a matter
- 0:27Speaker 1: of fin on social media, very honored to be there
- 0:29Speaker 1: and have met the President of at the time, President Clinton.
- 0:34Speaker 1: But this week also marks the two year anniversary of
- 0:39Speaker 1: my dad's memorial. And what a sign that both these
- 0:43Speaker 1: men are with us today. Because the predator, the successor
- 0:52Speaker 1: was it once removed or twice removed for John Cornell O'Connor.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Timothy Dolan was part of a conclave that made history today.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And the history part is only that he's American, the
- 1:10Speaker 1: first American pope and first Pope Leo since Ninethe since
- 1:14Speaker 1: eighteen seventy eight. It comes from Chicago, where my dad's
- 1:21Speaker 1: favorite teams were. And by the way, at the memorial,
- 1:26Speaker 1: we had a Chicago Cubs jersey in his honor. You
- 1:30Speaker 1: can't make it up, and the Cubs are coming to
- 1:32Speaker 1: town this weekend. This is a god sign that an
- 1:36Speaker 1: American pope is elected by the successor twice removed to
- 1:42Speaker 1: Cardinal O'Connor and is from the city that my dad
- 1:51Speaker 1: absolutely loved and absolutely rooted for. And you know by
- 1:57Speaker 1: now the history with the Cubs series we go to
- 2:01Speaker 1: everyone since I was six months old, and we were
- 2:04Speaker 1: almost gonna miss it this weekend, but I think we're
- 2:06Speaker 1: going because this is a sign we have to go.
- 2:09Speaker 1: The first Pope and he's from the city of Chicago
- 2:13Speaker 1: and the Cubs are coming to town this weekend to
- 2:17Speaker 1: face the Mets. You know, last year when we went
- 2:20Speaker 1: to Mets Cubs there was a birthday I kid you
- 2:25Speaker 1: not to someone named Papa Wan and I thought, Okay,
- 2:29Speaker 1: that's a sign my dad's with us again this year.
- 2:33Speaker 1: But now it's even more proof and it is emotional
- 2:41Speaker 1: because here's here's them on my dad. Okay, he was
- 2:44Speaker 1: a Lutheran. His church was Lutheran New Jersey. We all
- 2:48Speaker 1: know that. We all go Jepper Lutheran where I got
- 2:53Speaker 1: h with the first communion there and baptized. But he
- 3:01Speaker 1: also wanted to expose me to all the different religions.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Remember Saint John the Divine for Easter, and he made
- 3:11Speaker 1: Saint Patrick's Cathedral a place like a home for me.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Thanks to Cardinal O'Connor, where we would meet him on
- 3:20Speaker 1: the steps of the cathedral almost every parade. There are
- 3:23Speaker 1: a few pictures out there, and that tradition will continue
- 3:27Speaker 1: with Egan and Cardinal Dolan. By the way, why I
- 3:31Speaker 1: say Dolan shoul throughout the first pitch this weekend at
- 3:33Speaker 1: any of the Mets Cubs games, not only because he
- 3:36Speaker 1: was part of a conclave that elected the first American
- 3:39Speaker 1: pope from Chicago. By the way, Prevosts the Pope's real
- 3:45Speaker 1: last name is Prevost. Colleges have a Provost, So I
- 3:51Speaker 1: think we're electing a pretty wise person to the papalcy
- 3:56Speaker 1: and something that's needed, and there is hope that he
- 3:59Speaker 1: could unite some of the divisions of the Catholic Church.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But my dad, being Lutheran, exposed me to the same
- 4:08Speaker 1: Patrick's got me in the door at Saint Patrick's twenty
- 4:12Speaker 1: five years later, after remembering the funeral and remembering the
- 4:17Speaker 1: times where yes, Cardinal O'Connor did ask me to pray
- 4:20Speaker 1: for him, gave me his rosary. I remember like it
- 4:23Speaker 1: was yesterday, a winter of nineteen ninety eight, Christmas Day
- 4:29Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight as a matter of fact, and then
- 4:34Speaker 1: of course he would do his final midnight Mass a
- 4:37Speaker 1: year later, which we were also fortunate to go to.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But it's just it's it's amazing. And so the point
- 4:49Speaker 1: being is that on a daylight today, where we have
- 4:53Speaker 1: in just two days a pope selected, where we have
- 4:58Speaker 1: New York City a electing a pope through Cardinal Dolan.
- 5:02Speaker 1: And I know a lot of people like myself would
- 5:05Speaker 1: have loved if Cardinal Dolan became pope. He was a favorite.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I feel like he was in the mix, wasn't he.
- 5:13Speaker 1: But I'm sure he voted not for himself but for
- 5:18Speaker 1: Cardinal Prevosts to become Pope Leo the fourteenth. So that
- 5:27Speaker 1: is why I feel like New York City is responsible.
- 5:31Speaker 1: By the way, do you know he was one of
- 5:33Speaker 1: nine cardinals, if I'm not mistaken, from the States to
- 5:38Speaker 1: vote in the conclave nine or ten. A very small
- 5:44Speaker 1: portion of America had the privilege of having their cardinal
- 5:48Speaker 1: represent their city, and we were one of those cities.
- 5:55Speaker 1: We should be proud of Cardinal Dolan. Tonight that on
- 5:58Speaker 1: the anniversary twenty five years later where we you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: where there was a burial of his predecessor, Cardinal O'Connor,
- 6:10Speaker 1: He votes for an American And I know John Cardinal
- 6:14Speaker 1: O'Connor has to be smiling down right now at all
- 6:19Speaker 1: of this. And yes, because his successor twice removed, made
- 6:28Speaker 1: this happen, voted this in. I mean there were one
- 6:34Speaker 1: hundred and thirty three cardinals, only one from New York City,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and I'm sure that one's vote made a difference today
- 6:44Speaker 1: or I guess six hours seven hours later in Rome.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So yesterday their time. And as I wrote on social media,
- 6:56Speaker 1: and I might have said, yesterday installed popes in my lifetime.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Now three cardinals and I'm in the age of thirty three.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It's all God wins. It's all aligned here, and I
- 7:18Speaker 1: will say this. I will say this, it's now an
- 7:26Speaker 1: American pope that will take over. And I'm giving the
- 7:30Speaker 1: sports related a bit where Aaron Judges, captain of Team
- 7:35Speaker 1: USA Baseball, and I actually got a picture of Aaron
- 7:39Speaker 1: praying in center field. Tell me, not everything's in alignment
- 7:44Speaker 1: for this country. Tell me that as sacrilegious as the
- 7:49Speaker 1: President of the United States, pope sy that he was
- 7:51Speaker 1: the pope, what if he was sending a message to
- 7:53Speaker 1: vote an American in. That's what I've been starting to
- 7:56Speaker 1: think about maybe that was the message. I don't know.
- 8:00Speaker 1: They can be debated. Sorry, I love you, you're wrong
- 8:03Speaker 1: about that, But I do believe there was a manifestation
- 8:06Speaker 1: with that dumb Ai image that yes led to an
- 8:10Speaker 1: American being voted as the pope. Now interesting enough, you
- 8:17Speaker 1: know he speaks four languages. So four languages I believe
- 8:21Speaker 1: it's English, Italian, Spanish, and Latin. Very impressive. He did
- 8:25Speaker 1: a lot of his ministry work and missionary work in Peru,
- 8:29Speaker 1: so he The deal is he was born and raised
- 8:32Speaker 1: in Chicago, but at a very young age he went
- 8:35Speaker 1: off to do mission trips, ended up in Peru. And
- 8:39Speaker 1: actually he's only been a cardinal. This is interesting for
- 8:43Speaker 1: a couple of years now. It's not been too long
- 8:46Speaker 1: that I've heard. So it's a fairly recently installed cardinal
- 8:50Speaker 1: now becoming the pope. And maybe it was time that
- 8:54Speaker 1: an American runs the Catholic Church of the Vatican. Maybe
- 9:01Speaker 1: we will see differences. I gotta give Joe Piscopal credit
- 9:04Speaker 1: for what I'm about to say, because he brought this
- 9:07Speaker 1: up the other day. As much as it is interesting
- 9:10Speaker 1: that the Vatican has a gift shop and they do
- 9:12Speaker 1: take a lot of collections across the country. Why not
- 9:16Speaker 1: shift some of these fundings now to causes like keeping
- 9:20Speaker 1: Catholic schools open. I mean, my friend was only in
- 9:24Speaker 1: bay Ridge. Four Catholic schools are now one. How is
- 9:27Speaker 1: that even functioning? I mean, they've got to bring back
- 9:32Speaker 1: to do right by kids that are raised Catholic, the
- 9:36Speaker 1: Catholic schools to give parents that choice. The funding needs
- 9:39Speaker 1: to be there, and I would like this pope although
- 9:45Speaker 1: judging by his ex feed although maybe you can't judge
- 9:48Speaker 1: that by what he's posting about, he has been anti
- 9:52Speaker 1: you know, White House and administration. But maybe he will
- 9:56Speaker 1: be able to, as I said early, unite the church
- 10:00Speaker 1: and be a political as much as possible and just
- 10:03Speaker 1: preach what the Gospel says. I think that's really the
- 10:08Speaker 1: main goal of the pope and of any religious leader.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But twenty five years later, after honoring and burying Cardinal O'Connor,
- 10:20Speaker 1: an American pope is elected by the current Saint Patrick's Cathedral,
- 10:27Speaker 1: Cardinal Cardinal Dolan. And I didn't realize he's seventy five.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Bishop Leo is actually sixty nine, So you might be
- 10:40Speaker 1: there for twenty years. If track records seem to be
- 10:45Speaker 1: holding here. Remember Francis passed eighty eight, so maybe maybe
- 10:49Speaker 1: this pope will be in for twenty years. We'll have
- 10:51Speaker 1: to see how longevity goes. But an American and yes,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and yet I've said it, I'll say it publicly here
- 11:04Speaker 1: if the Knicks somehow pull off a miraculous postseason run
- 11:09Speaker 1: with the Nova Knicks, and maybe this pope should be
- 11:15Speaker 1: allowed to the party at City Hall and the popemobile
- 11:18Speaker 1: down in the Canton of Heroes. Stop it's so funny.
- 11:21Speaker 1: This is such a sacred day. But I feel like
- 11:24Speaker 1: because it's an American, because it's Chicago, everybody turned this
- 11:29Speaker 1: into more of a celebration and a meme than what's
- 11:31Speaker 1: really happening here, which is an American actually religious, actually
- 11:41Speaker 1: has one leg up at the Vatican as pope. But
- 11:49Speaker 1: stop it now as pope, and I do pray, and
- 11:53Speaker 1: I think that these cardinals did wisely and prayerfully elected
- 12:00Speaker 1: this pope. Is that word, Yes it is, And I
- 12:07Speaker 1: pray that this election and this conclave of twenty twenty
- 12:12Speaker 1: five will lead to bigger and better things, not just
- 12:16Speaker 1: for the Catholic Church. I mean this is a religious
- 12:19Speaker 1: figure for everyone, a global religious figure, and even Francis
- 12:26Speaker 1: was able to not convert obviously, but attract those who
- 12:34Speaker 1: are agnostic, or as he was able to reach people
- 12:38Speaker 1: who may not be entirely religious. And I believe on
- 12:42Speaker 1: that front this Pope needs to continue that. But if
- 12:47Speaker 1: we could do it in ways, if you could do
- 12:48Speaker 1: it in ways that are yes, American and probably a
- 12:54Speaker 1: little Chicago in him too and more so. And I
- 13:02Speaker 1: hate saying the word biblical, but text base and not
- 13:07Speaker 1: try and delve into all the political issues of the day.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Just focus on changing the world through the word while
- 13:19Speaker 1: keeping that smile on his face, Like I mean, Pope
- 13:22Speaker 1: Francis every bee roll you see, he's smiling. I love
- 13:26Speaker 1: that about Pope Francis too, and I hope this Pope
- 13:29Speaker 1: can be that but also be on point on mission.
- 13:36Speaker 1: He seems to have been born a missionary because of
- 13:38Speaker 1: his experience. Now his mission has just expanded, and as
- 13:45Speaker 1: that mission expands, I pray so to do the horizons
- 13:51Speaker 1: and the outlook of the Catholic Church of unity even
- 13:58Speaker 1: between Christians and Catholics, and maybe just a unity across
- 14:05Speaker 1: the board here, because like a president, this Pope is
- 14:12Speaker 1: inheriting two major major wars, and I understand Pope John
- 14:20Speaker 1: Paul the Second had to say in the tearing down
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the Berlin Wall, and one of this Pope can
- 14:27Speaker 1: be an influence for peace, and we can get the
- 14:32Speaker 1: prosperity eventually, but peace and unity and just stopping the
- 14:41Speaker 1: infighting that seems to be going on all over the place.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And on that I will say Amen, Amen, and may
- 14:51Speaker 1: God bless Pope Leo the fourteenth as a new era,
- 14:55Speaker 1: an American era, begins at the Vatican
