- 0:00Speaker 1: Revox dot Org. The Crews of the Noah's Ark by
- 0:03Speaker 1: David Cory. Fire Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire. Marjorie awoke with
- 0:10Speaker 1: a start. The weather cock was again sounding the warning fire, Fire, Fire,
- 0:16Speaker 1: where cried Marjorie, looking out of the porthole at the
- 0:20Speaker 1: excited weathercock, and then down to the deck, where at
- 0:23Speaker 1: that moment Captain Noah and his sons appeared, each armed
- 0:27Speaker 1: with a pail. The fire evidently was at the forward
- 0:30Speaker 1: end of the ark, for Noah and his crew ran
- 0:32Speaker 1: that direction. It took Marjorie but a few minutes to dress,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and just as she reached the deck, mister Jonah appeared.
- 0:41Speaker 1: This is a poor way to put out a fire,
- 0:43Speaker 1: he said, as he tossed the water from his pail
- 0:45Speaker 1: down the hatchway, from which was rising a thick cloud
- 0:48Speaker 1: of smoke. We need a hose and a pump. Hurry up,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Jonah commanded Captain Noah. This fire is getting too much
- 0:56Speaker 1: headway to suit me. I'm afraid the animals will be
- 0:59Speaker 1: roasted if we don't put it out pretty soon. As
- 1:02Speaker 1: he finished speaking, the elephant rushed on deck and, leaning
- 1:06Speaker 1: over the side of the ark, filled his trunk with water,
- 1:09Speaker 1: which he immediately squirted over himself, and then missus Elephant
- 1:12Speaker 1: did the same. I was never so warm before, she remarked,
- 1:17Speaker 1: not even in India. If I had stayed another minute
- 1:20Speaker 1: below deck, I would have been scarred for life. By
- 1:24Speaker 1: this time, the deck was crowded. Some of the animals
- 1:26Speaker 1: were nearly frightened to death. Some were choking with the smoke,
- 1:30Speaker 1: while others were filling the air with noises of all kinds.
- 1:34Speaker 1: It was as if Pandemonium were let loose. Those animals
- 1:39Speaker 1: which could climb were soon scrambling to the roof of
- 1:42Speaker 1: the ark, where they set on or clung desperately to
- 1:44Speaker 1: the ridgepole. The deck grew hotter and hotter, and it
- 1:48Speaker 1: was necessary for everyone to dance about in order to
- 1:52Speaker 1: keep his feet from blistering. Holy suffering Mackerel, exclaimed Captain Noah,
- 1:58Speaker 1: now realizing the seriousness of the situation. Are we to
- 2:01Speaker 1: be burned at sea? Get the elephants to squirt water
- 2:05Speaker 1: down the hold, suggested Ham. Get busy, said Captain Noah
- 2:09Speaker 1: to the elephants. Your trunks are nearly as good as hose.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Why don't you help us? What do you say, ella,
- 2:16Speaker 1: said the elephant. If we don't we may have to
- 2:19Speaker 1: swim later. Without answering, she went forward and commenced, drawing
- 2:23Speaker 1: up the salt water in her trunk and then sending
- 2:26Speaker 1: it in a swift stream down into the hold. The fire, however,
- 2:30Speaker 1: was gaining fast, and in spite of the efforts of
- 2:33Speaker 1: the elephants and the crew, the danger increased to an
- 2:36Speaker 1: alarming extent, and at last the flames leaped forth and
- 2:39Speaker 1: crawled over the deck. The animals howled and rushed to
- 2:43Speaker 1: the stern of the ark, which raised the boat high
- 2:45Speaker 1: in the air and thus added to the danger. If
- 2:49Speaker 1: it would only rain, said Missus Noah, who sat on
- 2:52Speaker 1: a coil of rope, her sealskin coat on her arm,
- 2:55Speaker 1: and her jewel box in her hand. If it would
- 2:58Speaker 1: only rain, This can't be the forty first day, can it?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Time does go so fast? Well, I guess something terrible
- 3:06Speaker 1: would have happened if just then, all of a sudden,
- 3:09Speaker 1: the weathercock hadn't seen the whale who had landed mister
- 3:13Speaker 1: Jonah board some two or three chapters ago. There's the whale,
- 3:17Speaker 1: shouted the weathercock. See him spout, run up a signal
- 3:21Speaker 1: of distress, commanded Captain Noah. He might save mister Jonah,
- 3:25Speaker 1: for all time's sake, if he'd only get up close
- 3:28Speaker 1: and spout water over the ark, he'd put out the
- 3:31Speaker 1: fire pretty quick, said Ham. Good idea, said Captain Noah.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Ship A hoy, yelled mister Jonah, waving his red bandanna
- 3:40Speaker 1: handkerchief in the air. A hoy, a hoy. Then the
- 3:44Speaker 1: whale stopped spouting and made for the ark. He's coming,
- 3:49Speaker 1: He's coming, shouted the weathercock. Don't stop squirting water, said
- 3:53Speaker 1: Captain Noah to the elephants. On with a pale brigade,
- 3:57Speaker 1: screamed Ham. And then the monkeys slid down from the
- 4:00Speaker 1: roof and grabbed hold of the pails and threw water
- 4:03Speaker 1: down the hold. But still the cruel flames crept nearer
- 4:06Speaker 1: and nearer. Oh dear, sighed missus Noah. I'm afraid my
- 4:11Speaker 1: seal skin coat will get singed, and after all the
- 4:14Speaker 1: trouble I've had putting it up in camphor. And then
- 4:18Speaker 1: all of a sudden, a tremendous stream of water fell
- 4:21Speaker 1: upon the ark, soaking every one to the skin. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: soon the deck was the river, and the steam that
- 4:27Speaker 1: came out of the hole almost suffocated everybody. Goodness be
- 4:32Speaker 1: screamed Missus Noah, we'll be swamped. Hold on, there, shouted
- 4:36Speaker 1: Captain Noah, leaning over the side of the ark, where
- 4:39Speaker 1: the whale lay like a fire patrol boat in action.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Hold on, turn off the hose or you'll drawn us.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So the good natured whale shut off the water, while
- 4:48Speaker 1: Captain Noah added, a Turkish bath has nothing on this.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It was off the kind of you to come to
- 4:54Speaker 1: our rescue, said Missus Noah, smiling sweetly at the whale
- 4:58Speaker 1: as she leaned over the railing. Well, if you hadn't
- 5:01Speaker 1: come just when you did, said Captain Noah, I guess
- 5:04Speaker 1: we'd all have gone down to Davy Jones's locker. Don't
- 5:08Speaker 1: mention it, said the whale, glad to have been able
- 5:11Speaker 1: to do you a little favor. You see, he added
- 5:14Speaker 1: in a low voice, mister Jonah was never satisfied when
- 5:17Speaker 1: he was my guest. He was always complaining about the dampness.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So when you came along and I had a chance
- 5:24Speaker 1: to put him aboard the ark, I was tickled to death.
- 5:28Speaker 1: In fact, I was so glad to get rid of
- 5:30Speaker 1: my passenger that I made up this little poem. And
- 5:34Speaker 1: then the whale began to spout. It's not so very
- 5:37Speaker 1: pleasant when sailing on the sea to have a passenger
- 5:41Speaker 1: aboard who's sulky as can be. And that's the reason.
- 5:45Speaker 1: After dark I landed him aboard the ark, and after
- 5:50Speaker 1: that he swam away, and the ark began once more
- 5:54Speaker 1: to skim over the dark blue sea, and by and by,
- 5:57Speaker 1: after a while, Captain Noah said, we'll have to make
- 6:01Speaker 1: new bunks and bursts for the animals. I guess, for
- 6:04Speaker 1: the fire has burned up everything. And oh dear me,
- 6:09Speaker 1: when he went below he saw that everything was burned
- 6:12Speaker 1: to a cinder. We'll have to land somewhere and make repairs,
- 6:15Speaker 1: said mister Jonah. I guess we will, said Captain Noah.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And all the animals began to howled and make dreadful noises,
- 6:23Speaker 1: for they didn't want to go down in the smoky hole,
- 6:26Speaker 1: you see. And just then, all of a sudden, the
- 6:29Speaker 1: weathercock called out land to starboard, and sure enough, looming
- 6:36Speaker 1: up in the dim distance was a mountainous shore line.
