- 0:01Speaker 1: Our adoption journey began early on in our marriage. We
- 0:08Speaker 1: got married the summer between my sophomore and junior year college,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and our first child was born ten months later, so
- 0:19Speaker 1: people thought we were crazy. Our second child was born
- 0:23Speaker 1: till a couple of years later, and after that we
- 0:29Speaker 1: had a girl and a boy, and we heard it
- 0:33Speaker 1: over and over and over again, you know, you have
- 0:36Speaker 1: the perfect little family, and there was so much pressure
- 0:41Speaker 1: on us to just stop there.
- 0:45Speaker 2: But then a few years later, we wanted more children
- 0:49Speaker 2: and had done some things to prevent us from having children,
- 0:54Speaker 2: and we went back and found out that those things
- 0:56Speaker 2: could not be reversed, so we began to at that
- 1:00Speaker 2: point think about adoption.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So here we are with our eleven year old and
- 1:03Speaker 1: our fourteen year old, and we walked into this agency
- 1:06Speaker 1: and we said, hey, we're interested in adopting, and I
- 1:10Speaker 1: think we said that we were adopting several children, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: the lady just went and got our supervisor. We didn't,
- 1:17Speaker 1: you know, know what was going on to tell her
- 1:18Speaker 1: what you just told me, and we just, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 1: we're interested in adopting maybe a few children. That we
- 1:28Speaker 1: didn't know at the time that adoption agencies in this
- 1:32Speaker 1: country have a hard time finding black families who will adopt.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It was like an answer to prayer for them. We
- 1:43Speaker 1: started our paperwork in May and we were matched in July.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It was almost scary because we were just, you know,
- 1:55Speaker 1: sort of getting used to the idea. By the end
- 1:57Speaker 1: of July, there was another baby in our home. Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 1: That was our first of seven adoptions, and everything changed.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We never went through that process again. The second adoption
- 2:10Speaker 1: was with the same agency, the adoptions Free through seven.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We just got phone calls seven times. The Lord said, yes, it's.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Been incredible for us. We love every minute of it.
- 2:29Speaker 2: We laugh a lot. Yeah, there's a lot of work
- 2:32Speaker 2: to be done, but everybody pitches in and it's great
- 2:39Speaker 2: for me.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Adoption has helped me both as an individual Christian and
- 2:43Speaker 1: as a pastor. Until you know, I became a father
- 2:48Speaker 1: to adopted children and was able to look at my
- 2:52Speaker 1: children and know these are as much my children as
- 2:57Speaker 1: those children who are related to me biologically. Until that moment,
- 3:03Speaker 1: I wasn't able to fully just understand and grasp what
- 3:08Speaker 1: it means to be a child of God because we
- 3:10Speaker 1: are His children by adoption. When you understand adoption, you
- 3:17Speaker 1: get that no, we are his children, and he's not
- 3:23Speaker 1: going anywhere. Adoption is about the gospel.
- 3:27Speaker 2: For me, adoption is important because it's just a beautiful
- 3:30Speaker 2: picture of God's grace in my life. I was really
- 3:33Speaker 2: the forerunner in doing something to prevent us having more children. Biologically,
- 3:38Speaker 2: I was insane.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I was wrong.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I wanted to be in control and I didn't allow
- 3:43Speaker 2: God to be in control. God is so faithful to
- 3:46Speaker 2: give us back with the locust of eaten. I just
- 3:49Speaker 2: get a chance to love on some kids who are
- 3:52Speaker 2: actually my kids and raise them. It's just been a blessing.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Not think that I would be almost fifty years old
- 4:03Speaker 2: with seven kids, seven little kids, But I tell you
- 4:08Speaker 2: I wouldn't trade this for anything.
- 4:12Speaker 1: When we started this journey, we were on the downhill
- 4:16Speaker 1: side of parenting. You know, we had two kids that
- 4:19Speaker 1: were fourteen and eleven. We were just a few years
- 4:21Speaker 1: away from an empty nest. And now we're you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: almost fifty, and you know we're looking at ten, eight, six, five, four,
- 4:33Speaker 1: three and almost two. You know, so, no, we're not
- 4:38Speaker 1: doing the empty nest thing. What else are we going
- 4:42Speaker 1: to do? What else are we going to do with
- 4:44Speaker 1: our lives? That would be more important than what we're
- 4:47Speaker 1: doing right now with our lives. I can't think of
- 4:51Speaker 1: anything ind
