- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us Now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia Metter podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:30Speaker 2: That's one pm for our friends in Simpsonville, Kentucky on
- 0:33Speaker 2: Thursday May twenty ninth, and we're live for Mediater HQ
- 0:37Speaker 2: and Bozeman. I'm your host, Spencer, joined today by Cal
- 0:40Speaker 2: and Brody. On today's show, we'll talk to Ellen and
- 0:43Speaker 2: her mushroom hunting dog, Noodle. Then we'll find out how
- 0:46Speaker 2: much Cal and Brody know about their fellow outdoorsman with
- 0:49Speaker 2: a game of meat poll. After that, we've got one
- 0:52Speaker 2: minute fishing with Christine Fisher in Oklahoma, followed by an
- 0:55Speaker 2: interview with brock Wall about the newly formed North American
- 0:59Speaker 2: Pronghorn Founder. And finally we've got a hot tip off
- 1:02Speaker 2: with a special guest judge about parenting in the outdoors. First,
- 1:07Speaker 2: Cow Brody, I don't want a hunting update. I don't
- 1:09Speaker 2: want a fishing update from you guys. I want a
- 1:11Speaker 2: garden update. How the garden's looking.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Garden's in, I mean it's early right.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Mm hm. What's going to be different this year? Brody?
- 1:20Speaker 3: We do something different every year. I let the boys pick.
- 1:22Speaker 3: We're doing some corn this year, which will be new
- 1:24Speaker 3: for us.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Okay, that was of interest to them.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what they wanted.
- 1:28Speaker 2: What you leave behind to I just like.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Buying the six dollars, like six for three dollars, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 3: pack of corn at the grocery store. Okay, but yeah,
- 1:38Speaker 3: standard stuff, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, pole beans, lots of herbs,
- 1:45Speaker 3: just standard stuff.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Feeling optimistic this year?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah, man, I grow an awesome garden everythore.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It doesn't like just go to hell when you leave
- 1:53Speaker 2: for a week to go fishing at Fort Pack or something.
- 1:55Speaker 3: No, no, I just water the shit out of it
- 1:58Speaker 3: and then put malts down and it's good, like as
- 2:00Speaker 3: long as it's later. If you did that this time
- 2:03Speaker 3: of year, you'd beat trouble. But in August.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's cal Give us a garden update. How are things looking.
- 2:10Speaker 1: We had a real serious talk, the lady and I
- 2:15Speaker 1: and and came to the conclusion that it's just not
- 2:18Speaker 1: worth doing a garden this year.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Oh okay, because of lots.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Of overlapping travel like nobody and you know, it's just
- 2:27Speaker 1: not a high producer anyway with our setup. So we
- 2:31Speaker 1: have garlic and onions. Okay, yeah, but I my mom
- 2:39Speaker 1: is if anybody needs a sweet little farm outside of
- 2:42Speaker 1: the Billings, Montana area. The folks are selling out ninety
- 2:47Speaker 1: acres irrigated right outside of Shepherd. It's a sweet spot.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Kill geese there all the time.
- 2:53Speaker 2: How many trees around this property?
- 2:55Speaker 4: Trees?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah, tree stands, well, a bunch of cottonwoods okay, yeah yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Uh and would they fit it with a tree stand
- 3:03Speaker 2: fit in one of them? Oh yeah, okay yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 1: And you you would attract wildlife because it is like
- 3:09Speaker 1: zero habitat anywhere around there because it is just wall
- 3:16Speaker 1: the wall farming good sales. But yeah, great spot. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: if it wasn't just weren't so many people, I'd might
- 3:23Speaker 1: be buying that thing. Anyway. She's got a tremendous garden,
- 3:28Speaker 1: always has.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And comes with the farm, comes with the farm.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And now it's it's pretty funny because it's just like
- 3:35Speaker 1: all the volunteer stuff that's coming up. And so we
- 3:38Speaker 1: picked cilantro and let us and uh hit the asparagus patch.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And this is where the conflict comes in. Well, we're
- 3:47Speaker 1: pulling asparagus right because I'm like, yeah, you guys aren't
- 3:50Speaker 1: place is gonna sell okay, and pulling asparagus, and my
- 3:53Speaker 1: Mom's like, what the hell are you doing? You gotta
- 3:57Speaker 1: cut that off beneath the soil line.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Or it won't grow back, okay.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And I was kind of like, well, you guys are leaving,
- 4:04Speaker 1: what's the anyway? But then hop on a plane, go
- 4:09Speaker 1: to Wisconsin, see bubbly Doug. And out there at the
- 4:12Speaker 1: Durham farm they have a tremendous asparagus patch. And I
- 4:17Speaker 1: notice that Doug's lovely wife, Trish aka Trish the Dish
- 4:22Speaker 1: as I like to call her, who else nobody. I'm
- 4:26Speaker 1: trying to establish it though, And I mean, she is
- 4:30Speaker 1: such a sweet person that I just try to make
- 4:33Speaker 1: sure that that Doug knows that as well, and he does.
- 4:37Speaker 1: But amazing asparagus patch and none of them are cut
- 4:42Speaker 1: off low oh. And so I said, Trish, man, what's
- 4:46Speaker 1: the what's the deal? Aren't you supposed to? And She's like, yep,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you are. I just never do and look at the results.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I just saw a Facebook argument about this, like last
- 4:57Speaker 2: week about the same thing. Someone was mad at their
- 5:00Speaker 2: neighbor for stealing from their ditch asparagus patch and doing
- 5:04Speaker 2: it the wrong way. Well, not only were they thiefing it,
- 5:07Speaker 2: but also those mf ors were doing it the wrong
- 5:10Speaker 2: way by not taking it down to the soil. It
- 5:13Speaker 2: seemed like in the comments, folks were mostly on their
- 5:16Speaker 2: side saying you have to take it off below the soil,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and then there were other people saying it doesn't matter.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Never noticed the difference.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's foraging etiquette rules, right that we
- 5:25Speaker 1: should all live by. Hmmm, because if done properly, it's
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to be their year after year after year.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You hear the same thing said with moral mushrooms. Yeah,
- 5:34Speaker 2: that like you're supposed to cut instead of pull. That
- 5:37Speaker 2: one is totally false.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yeah, all the stumps in the ground, you can.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Pull those things right out of the ground. That's like
- 5:41Speaker 2: plucking an apple off of a tree. You're not you're
- 5:45Speaker 2: just taking the apple. Even if you pull the whole
- 5:47Speaker 2: thing out, you're not taking the whole tree away. They're
- 5:50Speaker 2: all that my celium underneath is still going to produce
- 5:52Speaker 2: a mushroom if it wants to the next year. That
- 5:53Speaker 2: little stump is going to help or hurt anything.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, but they they'll grow in clumps, right, So I've
- 6:00Speaker 1: like gone back and picked the same spot. Sure, during
- 6:03Speaker 1: that like that same like week long period of real
- 6:06Speaker 1: fruit harvest, right, and have seeing plenty of mushrooms growing
- 6:11Speaker 1: up next to stumps. But I know, I know, you're right.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just it's hard to break that. Yeah, it's
- 6:18Speaker 2: also a little cleaner if you if you take the
- 6:20Speaker 2: whole thing off, like if you if you pull it
- 6:23Speaker 2: out of the ground, you're gonna get get in yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 2: like five to ten percent more mushroom. But you may
- 6:27Speaker 2: trim that off at home anyway.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and then in the bag that dirty stumps rolling around, Sure,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and it's getting in the gills of the mushrooms, and
- 6:36Speaker 1: it's just more clean.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Plus you can look at it two ways. Either you
- 6:39Speaker 2: are letting other folks know, because I'll come across someone
- 6:42Speaker 2: else's morale stumps, which or damn it, they beat me here.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It's like coming across a giant surface poop with tons
- 6:50Speaker 1: of white flagging all over the place, or a.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Big gut pile.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, fresh boot tracks that come in from some
- 6:57Speaker 1: uh huh, you're the only truck at the trailhead. Yeah,
- 7:00Speaker 1: snow on the ground to set the scene. Hell of
- 7:04Speaker 1: a blizzard the night before, like everything's right. You're the
- 7:07Speaker 1: first person there.
- 7:08Speaker 3: One set of tracks, and you're like, that whole spot's blown.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And for whatever reason, somebody hiked over the hill from
- 7:14Speaker 1: a different angle and you cut boot tracks about it
- 7:17Speaker 1: mile in yep, and you're just like, so.
- 7:19Speaker 2: When I find those stumps, someone else has bested me.
- 7:22Speaker 2: They've got me there, But now I know there were
- 7:25Speaker 2: morales there. Yeah, so they're leaving me a little bit
- 7:28Speaker 2: of information.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's like people who have to put a
- 7:31Speaker 1: trail camera up everywhere.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Speaking of foraging, let's get to our first interview. Joining
- 7:36Speaker 2: us on the line now is Ellen and her mushroom
- 7:39Speaker 2: hunting dog, Noodle. Ellen and Noodle, welcome to the show.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Thank you so much for having us.
- 7:45Speaker 2: First thing, Ellen tell us about Noodle. How old is she?
- 7:48Speaker 2: What kind of dog is she? Where'd you get her?
- 7:51Speaker 6: So?
- 7:51Speaker 5: Noodle is four and a half years old. I got her. Actually,
- 7:57Speaker 5: it was a long story of kind of fate how
- 7:59Speaker 5: I ended up with her, but I ultimately picked her
- 8:01Speaker 5: up at a children's rodeo in northern California.
- 8:05Speaker 7: She's a half lab half.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Border colleague, as far as I know, from an unwanted litter.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Okay, and we can see Noodle. Noodle is with Ellen
- 8:13Speaker 2: right now for the interview. You should go watch this episode.
- 8:17Speaker 2: You'll get to see the dog we're talking about. Plus
- 8:19Speaker 2: Phil Phil has some photos of Noodle forging. Now, how
- 8:24Speaker 2: have you ever met another mushroom hunting dog in your life?
- 8:28Speaker 6: You know?
- 8:28Speaker 5: I've spoken to a couple people online who are maybe
- 8:32Speaker 5: training or trying to. And I actually used to live
- 8:34Speaker 5: in Italy where a lot of people use truffle dogs.
- 8:39Speaker 5: So I was inspired by that, Oh you want your ball, huh?
- 8:46Speaker 5: And so that did inspire me. But I haven't met
- 8:48Speaker 5: anybody in person yet. I'd love to meet up with
- 8:50Speaker 5: somebody else who has a mushroom dog though.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Okay, and how long has Noodle had this special talent?
- 8:56Speaker 5: So I taught her about three years ago. She was
- 8:58Speaker 5: a little over a year old when I first saw
- 9:00Speaker 5: her first MOREL season.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And tell us about the training process for teaching Noodle
- 9:05Speaker 2: to find mushrooms.
- 9:07Speaker 5: Yeah, so there's a lot of info out there on
- 9:10Speaker 5: kind of proper scent training protocol. I'll just say I
- 9:13Speaker 5: didn't do any of that. I just kind of winged
- 9:16Speaker 5: it out in the woods.
- 9:17Speaker 7: One day.
- 9:18Speaker 5: I pointed to a Morrell and I just said, where's
- 9:22Speaker 5: the mushroom? She sniffed it. I immediately threw a stick
- 9:26Speaker 5: for her, because she is with dogs, she's just absolutely
- 9:29Speaker 5: fetched crazy. She will die trying to get that ball.
- 9:33Speaker 5: So I threw a stick for her. I called her
- 9:35Speaker 5: back to the same morele, pointed at it through the
- 9:37Speaker 5: stick again. Then I went to a third morel and
- 9:40Speaker 5: she really, within fifteen minutes had just cracked the code.
- 9:44Speaker 5: And she was off running two hundred feet away, just
- 9:47Speaker 5: waiting for me to throw the ball for her.
- 9:49Speaker 1: That's my labrador brain right there.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Now.
- 9:52Speaker 2: What was the most challenging part of teaching Noodle to
- 9:55Speaker 2: find mushrooms?
- 9:57Speaker 5: You know, honestly, it was surprisingly easy. But I'd say
- 10:00Speaker 5: at the beginning it was a little hard to get
- 10:03Speaker 5: her to differentiate, okay, which mushrooms are good, which mushrooms
- 10:06Speaker 5: are bad.
- 10:07Speaker 7: But she did.
- 10:08Speaker 5: I mean she figured it out quickly. It's like, if
- 10:10Speaker 5: she sniffed the wrong kind of mushroom, I'm like, no,
- 10:13Speaker 5: that's not a mushroom. You don't get a stick. So
- 10:15Speaker 5: she figured it out fast.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Now, in most videos I see Noodle finding morale mushrooms.
- 10:21Speaker 2: What are the other good mushrooms that she'll help you find.
- 10:25Speaker 5: So she has about seven varieties. We do morels. We
- 10:30Speaker 5: taught her Chantrell's afterwards, then matsutake. We do Porcini handicaps.
- 10:39Speaker 5: She taught herself, which was pretty annoying because Russia. She
- 10:43Speaker 5: saw me collecting them and then she was like, I
- 10:46Speaker 5: want to get in on this and started trampling them.
- 10:49Speaker 5: But we also do black trumpets.
- 10:52Speaker 2: If I didn't say that one, Okay, it sounds like
- 10:54Speaker 2: Noodle has taught herself this skill for the most part. Now,
- 10:57Speaker 2: how does she alert you when she finds a good mushroom?
- 11:01Speaker 5: You know that position that dogs get in when they're
- 11:03Speaker 5: waiting for you to throw the ball and they're kind
- 11:05Speaker 5: of crouched down just at attention. She just crouches by
- 11:09Speaker 5: the mushroom and gets that alert look on her face.
- 11:13Speaker 5: And if I don't see it, I'll often say show me,
- 11:16Speaker 5: and then she taps it with her nose, and if
- 11:19Speaker 5: I really she thinks I'm being a total idiot and
- 11:21Speaker 5: I really can't see it, he smacks it with her pot.
- 11:24Speaker 7: Occasionally she knocks them out of the ground completely.
- 11:27Speaker 2: That's awesome, extra helpful. Now you said the reward is
- 11:31Speaker 2: throwing a stick or a ball, that's what you do.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Every time she finds a good mushroom.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Yeah, if it's a good one. If it's a little nasty,
- 11:38Speaker 5: I say, ah, that's nasty, find another. Or if she's
- 11:40Speaker 5: really found a cluster and she's going from mushroom to mushroom,
- 11:44Speaker 5: I say, all right, you have to just lay down
- 11:46Speaker 5: and wait for me to collect all of these and
- 11:48Speaker 5: then you'll get your reward.
- 11:50Speaker 2: That's great. Now morel's are not toxic for dogs. Does
- 11:53Speaker 2: Noodle ever get to eat them or express any interest
- 11:56Speaker 2: in eating them?
- 11:58Speaker 5: Well, I will actually clarify that a bit, because while
- 12:01Speaker 5: morals are not toxic, they're actually toxic raw and there
- 12:05Speaker 5: was even a poisoning that included some deaths in the
- 12:07Speaker 5: last few years, I believe in Montana. That's kind of
- 12:09Speaker 5: highly debated in the mushroom world. But they are toxic
- 12:13Speaker 5: raw for both humans and dogs. So always cook your
- 12:18Speaker 5: morales super thoroughly. You basically can't overcook them, but don't
- 12:21Speaker 5: eat them raw. I you know, she'll occasionally bite them
- 12:26Speaker 5: or lick them. Really not much of a bite. She's
- 12:29Speaker 5: not enough to eat anything. But I have her pretty
- 12:31Speaker 5: well trained on not eating food that I don't want
- 12:34Speaker 5: her to eat, So I haven't actually given her any
- 12:38Speaker 5: mushrooms before. I don't really want to give her much
- 12:42Speaker 5: of a taste for it. I've heard with truffle pigs
- 12:45Speaker 5: one of the risks because they're not quite as trainable.
- 12:48Speaker 5: They will bite the owner's hands or the trainer's hands
- 12:52Speaker 5: while the trainer's harvesting in the truffle, so I want
- 12:54Speaker 5: to avoid that more or less.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, what has been Noodle's best ever day of forage?
- 13:01Speaker 5: Gosh? I mean, that's a tough one. Every time she
- 13:03Speaker 5: finds every time I train her in a new species.
- 13:07Speaker 5: So I would say the second second species I taught
- 13:10Speaker 5: her in was Chantrell's and it actually took her a
- 13:13Speaker 5: lot longer than the morals. We went up to Mendocino
- 13:17Speaker 5: and there's just it's such a rich diversity of fungal activity.
- 13:21Speaker 5: There were so many mushrooms everywhere, so she was getting distracted.
- 13:25Speaker 5: But when she finally pinpointed like, okay, these are the
- 13:28Speaker 5: ones that she wants, doesn't want any of these other ones.
- 13:32Speaker 5: We found over fifty pounds in like you know, an
- 13:34Speaker 5: hour or two, and I sold some to a restaurant.
- 13:37Speaker 7: It was great.
- 13:38Speaker 5: So that was a highlight for sure, that is great.
- 13:40Speaker 2: How is the moral season Ben for you so far
- 13:43Speaker 2: this year in northern California.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been pretty hit or miss. I'd say we
- 13:49Speaker 5: got hot, we don't. We didn't have great snowpack in
- 13:52Speaker 5: the sierra this season. It dried up a little quickly.
- 13:56Speaker 5: So my lower elevation spot's like three thousand and that range.
- 14:02Speaker 5: The mid range really dried up fast, and then now
- 14:05Speaker 5: we're having some I'm not having a bad season in
- 14:08Speaker 5: the higher elevation.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Okay, good. Good for you guys, Good for Noodle. If
- 14:12Speaker 2: folks want to follow along with you in Noodle's mushroom
- 14:15Speaker 2: hunting adventures, how can they do so.
- 14:17Speaker 5: We've got an Instagram page. It's really good Noodle and
- 14:21Speaker 5: I've got a lot of videos of her running around
- 14:22Speaker 5: in the woods getting up to adventures together. And we
- 14:26Speaker 5: do have TikTok as well. Same name. Not as active
- 14:28Speaker 5: there though.
- 14:29Speaker 2: One of my favorite follows on social media is Ellen
- 14:32Speaker 2: and Noodle. Thank you guys for joining us. Please tell
- 14:35Speaker 2: Noodle she's a good girl and we're very impressed with
- 14:38Speaker 2: her foraging skills.
- 14:39Speaker 5: Thanks so much for having us.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Thank you. That's sweet. Cal I love snort snort. It's
- 14:45Speaker 2: a great dog. I'd rather have a mushroom hunting dog.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I think that's good.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Good hunting dog can hunt anything, that's right.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Okay, I'd like to see you teach Snort. It sounds
- 14:55Speaker 2: like if the dog is into it, there's not a
- 14:58Speaker 2: lot to do.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And I mean, yeah, it's the prey drive plus the
- 15:03Speaker 1: praise drive.
- 15:05Speaker 2: What kind of praise does snork it when she's being
- 15:08Speaker 2: a good girl A lot of hunt?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Well, you know, like she doesn't want to be I
- 15:14Speaker 1: give her praise?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Uh huh.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Really, she wants food at the end of the day.
- 15:20Speaker 1: But man, during a hunt, you can't hardly touch her.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Her praise, her praise is just fine.
- 15:26Speaker 2: And a bird right her alone?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Oh she wants that bird so bad.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, all right. Our next segment is meat Pole.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Say if Sully and meat fool is to take my pole,
- 15:39Speaker 3: Welcome to meat lady. I got a game something.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Meat Pole is a test of how much you know
- 15:51Speaker 2: about your fellow hunters and anglers. I surveyed five hundred
- 15:54Speaker 2: meat Eater listeners about the outdoors. Your job is to
- 15:57Speaker 2: predict their answers. There are three questions. Whoever is closest
- 16:01Speaker 2: to the correct answer between Callen Brody gets a point,
- 16:04Speaker 2: and whoever gets two points will be the winner. Also,
- 16:06Speaker 2: the chat should play along because Phil is going to
- 16:09Speaker 2: watch your answers and give a shout out to whoever
- 16:11Speaker 2: is close.
- 16:12Speaker 3: I'm not fall what if we both get two points.
- 16:15Speaker 2: There's only three questions, so that won't happen. One of
- 16:19Speaker 2: you is gonna get a point each question, and that's
- 16:23Speaker 2: how we're gonna settle this thing, all right. Question one,
- 16:25Speaker 2: what percentage of meat eater listeners have washed their pickup
- 16:30Speaker 2: in the last month. We're supposed to write this, write
- 16:34Speaker 2: down and answer hide your answer. That's right. What percentage
- 16:38Speaker 2: of med eater listeners have washed their pickup in the
- 16:41Speaker 2: last month. Now, for this question, I said for pickup
- 16:44Speaker 2: owners only, which happened to be about ninety percent of
- 16:48Speaker 2: folks who took their survey. So what percentage of those
- 16:51Speaker 2: people have washed their pickup in the last month? Callen's
- 16:54Speaker 2: the last time you washed your pickup?
- 16:57Speaker 1: I am not a good via washer, never ever, ever
- 17:01Speaker 1: have been.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Okay, that doesn't surprise me, but.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Part of my Memorial Day clean up was vacuuming out
- 17:09Speaker 1: the truck and with the dog hair in the sand
- 17:12Speaker 1: and all this stuff, and then I did what I
- 17:16Speaker 1: wasn't intending to wash the truck, but I needed to
- 17:19Speaker 1: spray out the floor mats because they were real nightly,
- 17:23Speaker 1: and so I did end up posing off the truck.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I bet I go through a car wash four or
- 17:29Speaker 2: five times a year, not that often. I'm conscious of
- 17:32Speaker 2: it if I go on a hunt where I think
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'm gonna end up asking for permission, Oh yeah, because
- 17:36Speaker 2: when I go knock on someone's door and if I
- 17:38Speaker 2: had just like a filthy, dirty, muddy pickup, they're gonna
- 17:41Speaker 2: be thinking, this guy wants to drive through my field,
- 17:44Speaker 2: that's gonna be a big no. Because one of the
- 17:46Speaker 2: first things if I do get permission they'll say is
- 17:49Speaker 2: just don't drive anywhere, don't drive through any gates, don't
- 17:51Speaker 2: drive through any fields. So I try to be aware
- 17:54Speaker 2: of that. I want to show up with a sparkling,
- 17:56Speaker 2: clean pickup either, because then that sends a different message.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But if that thing just looks like I drove it
- 18:01Speaker 2: through a big old mud puddle, that's no good for me.
- 18:04Speaker 1: No, it's not yet, I mean, but there's also like
- 18:06Speaker 1: the noxious weed side of things, right, Like vehicles are
- 18:10Speaker 1: a huge vector for spreading bad things.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and that stuff like you're driving around, say out
- 18:15Speaker 3: in eastern Montana and the gumbo and that stuff gets
- 18:18Speaker 3: glued to the bottom of your truck. You gotta get
- 18:20Speaker 3: rid of it. Yeah.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Hey, Phil, do you have any bet of music to
- 18:23Speaker 2: play while we uh, while we do this?
- 18:27Speaker 4: Nothing original?
- 18:27Speaker 2: Oh that's okay. Do you boys have an answer for
- 18:30Speaker 2: what percentage of media do listeners have washed their pick
- 18:33Speaker 2: up in the last month? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 18:36Speaker 3: The one came out, okay, all right, so go ahead.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Brody says seventy one percent. Cal says forty one percent.
- 18:46Speaker 2: The correct answer is thirty point five percent. So Cal
- 18:51Speaker 2: gets that first point. Thirty point five percent of media
- 18:54Speaker 2: do listeners have washed.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Their dirt bags? Not washing their stuff in.
- 18:57Speaker 2: The last month. One study showed that the average person
- 19:01Speaker 2: washes their car thirteen times a year. That same study
- 19:05Speaker 2: showed that seventy nine percent of people go to a
- 19:08Speaker 2: car wash versus twenty one percent of people who wash
- 19:10Speaker 2: their car at home. But when it comes to the interior,
- 19:13Speaker 2: the average person cleans the inside of their car once
- 19:16Speaker 2: a year.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Whoah, I just paid my boys to detail my truck.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Oh are they are are they can I hire them to?
- 19:23Speaker 3: Well, how much you want to?
- 19:25Speaker 2: Would you charge that?
- 19:26Speaker 3: The charity of the job is going to be based
- 19:28Speaker 3: on how much you're willing to pay it.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Would you pay them?
- 19:30Speaker 3: I was a little underwhelmed and I had to up
- 19:32Speaker 3: the ant is.
- 19:33Speaker 2: About fifty bucks?
- 19:35Speaker 3: They split fifty Okay?
- 19:36Speaker 8: Did it?
- 19:37Speaker 2: Did it seem like a fifty dollars job? Do you?
- 19:40Speaker 3: Yeah? It was worth it to me. I didn't want
- 19:42Speaker 3: to spend a couple hours doing that.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Uh, Montana Hunter said twenty eight.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Oh, well done, Montana Hunter, you were two percentage points off.
- 19:50Speaker 2: All right? Question two? What percentage of meat eater listeners
- 19:54Speaker 2: have ever bitten into a BBI? What percentage of meat
- 20:00Speaker 2: either listeners?
- 20:01Speaker 3: You're talking like any kind of pellet, like not a bebe?
- 20:05Speaker 3: Like a bb gun? Yeah, any kind of pellet, not
- 20:07Speaker 3: gun pellet, But it does like.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Break you phil That That ups? That makes is so
- 20:12Speaker 2: much better what we're doing here. What percentage of meat
- 20:15Speaker 2: eater listeners have ever bitten into a bb cal? How
- 20:18Speaker 2: many bebes in your lifetime? I'm gonna guess like five
- 20:20Speaker 2: or six.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Oh, buddy, I got a two cracked teeth in my
- 20:24Speaker 1: face a year.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Oh, Yeah, how many what's the number?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Oh, twenty I I I was gonna say thirty, but
- 20:35Speaker 1: I thought that sounded dramatic. But it's definitely higher than twenty.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Do you think you've gotten better or worse in your
- 20:41Speaker 2: lifetime about cleaning bebies out of stelf?
- 20:44Speaker 1: Well, technology is a mother scratcher. Number nine tongues down.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Yeah, holy cow, dude buried like oh, in the bottom
- 20:53Speaker 3: of a thigh or a breast. Yeah, like you can't
- 20:56Speaker 3: find that's probably swallowed. Yeah, several of them. Yeah, without
- 21:00Speaker 3: knowing that.
- 21:00Speaker 2: How about you, brody, how many bebes have you been into?
- 21:03Speaker 3: Dozens? Like, and I mean like there's degrees of biting too.
- 21:07Speaker 3: It's like, oh I feel it and I just spit
- 21:09Speaker 3: it out, no big deal, and there's like wham, you
- 21:12Speaker 3: come down on it with both molars. That's rough.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm at single digits, but it's because one, like
- 21:18Speaker 2: the last experience was really bad where I'm like, I'm
- 21:20Speaker 2: never gonna let that happen again. I'm gonna clean these
- 21:23Speaker 2: things so thorough, or I'm gonna cut the meat so thin.
- 21:26Speaker 2: A bb is never gonna make it onto my dinner plate.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yeah, they just find a way in there.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Man.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Yeah, when you get the one that we're like it,
- 21:33Speaker 1: there's like a mammalian spinal reflex that happens.
- 21:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's almost like it's like as shocking as a
- 21:43Speaker 3: bad electric shot. Yeah you know, Oh yeah, it goes
- 21:45Speaker 3: all the way down your Spine's a meal.
- 21:48Speaker 2: So what percentage of meat eater listeners have ever bitten
- 21:51Speaker 2: into a bb You boys, ready, sure, yep, go ahead
- 21:54Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. We have Brody saying eighty eight percent,
- 21:57Speaker 2: Cal says sixty three percent. One of you is within
- 22:02Speaker 2: three points of the correct answer. The correct answer is
- 22:06Speaker 2: sixty five point nine percent. Cow is on fire man
- 22:11Speaker 2: of people here, eighty percent of Americans over the age
- 22:14Speaker 2: of forty have had at least one cracked or fractured
- 22:17Speaker 2: tooth in their lifetime. The most common foods that cracked
- 22:20Speaker 2: teeth are hard candy, nuts, ice, popcorn kernels, and bone
- 22:24Speaker 2: in meat. That study I was looking at never said
- 22:27Speaker 2: anything about pellets, But I imagine our audience is very
- 22:30Speaker 2: familiar with that feeling you boys are describing.
- 22:33Speaker 8: I think.
- 22:35Speaker 1: You overestimated how many bird hunters we have.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I think that's the.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Yeah, But ducks, pheasants, turkeys, I mean they're all birds. Yeah,
- 22:45Speaker 3: I know, it's just like I'm a little disappointed.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Question three, we have.
- 22:50Speaker 4: The broke three gunners saying sixty seven, So good job.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Damn one percentage point off. Here's question three. We'll see
- 22:57Speaker 2: if cal can get the clean sweep and make Brody
- 22:59Speaker 2: run around the off is naked, as is tradition when
- 23:02Speaker 2: you get skunked naked? What percentage of meat eater listeners
- 23:06Speaker 2: have fishing bait in their fridge or freezer right now?
- 23:10Speaker 1: Oh, I can tell you, what do you do?
- 23:14Speaker 3: What?
- 23:14Speaker 2: What you got leach in the garden?
- 23:17Speaker 3: Got some crawlers and leeches?
- 23:19Speaker 2: How are you going to spend those?
- 23:21Speaker 3: What do you mean spend them?
- 23:22Speaker 2: Like we're going to use fishing currency. What are you
- 23:24Speaker 2: gonna do with them?
- 23:25Speaker 3: Catch a bunch of walleye? Hope, maybe some perch.
- 23:28Speaker 2: What percentage of meat eater listeners have fishing bait in
- 23:32Speaker 2: their fridge or freezer right now? I have some deer
- 23:36Speaker 2: liver that you're marked, uh for some catfish on the
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yellowstone River later this summer, So I've got some in
- 23:41Speaker 2: my freezer. How about you Cal? Any bait in your
- 23:44Speaker 2: home right now? Staying cold?
- 23:47Speaker 1: You already asked the question, but I feel like old
- 23:51Speaker 1: meat it doesn't qualify for this question or shouldn't.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Oh, I think folks would know if they put it
- 23:58Speaker 2: in their freezer for the purpose of catching a fish.
- 24:01Speaker 2: They probably answered, honestly, what percentage of meat eater listeners
- 24:05Speaker 2: have fishing bait in their fridge or freezer? Right now? Okay, boys, ready,
- 24:12Speaker 2: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal saying
- 24:15Speaker 2: thirty eight and Brody's saying fifty. It's a clean sweep
- 24:20Speaker 2: for Cal. The correct answer is thirty four zero point
- 24:23Speaker 2: nine percent. Cal dominated today very close on every one
- 24:27Speaker 2: of these questions. He's declared it before. He's a man
- 24:30Speaker 2: of the people, but this this game really proves it.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Phil Ti Sonar people, will you take that Spencer Newheart soundclip?
- 24:37Speaker 1: That might be the nicest thing he ever says about
- 24:39Speaker 1: man memorialize that someplace.
- 24:41Speaker 2: American spend one point five billion dollars on live bait
- 24:46Speaker 2: and natural bait each year. That's fifty percent more than
- 24:49Speaker 2: they spend on lures and flies and twenty percent less
- 24:52Speaker 2: than they spend on boat fuel. Bait accounts for about
- 24:56Speaker 2: thirteen percent of all phishing related expenses.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Ryan Carl since in thirty four point five damn.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Point four percentage points off. Thirty five percent of people
- 25:06Speaker 2: who are listening to this show have bait in their
- 25:08Speaker 2: fridge or freezer right now?
- 25:13Speaker 8: All right?
- 25:14Speaker 2: Moving on, Our next segment is one minute Fishing chousing bait.
- 25:20Speaker 2: We'll do you. I'll find out in a second.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Go ahead, make my casts.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Bread in a ringer here?
- 25:26Speaker 2: Didn't you we were trying to. One Minute Fishing is
- 25:29Speaker 2: where we go live to someone who's fishing and they
- 25:31Speaker 2: have one minute to catch a fish, and if they're successful,
- 25:34Speaker 2: we'll make a five hundred dollars donation to a conservation group.
- 25:37Speaker 2: This week, our angler is Christine Fisher aka Midwest fisher
- 25:41Speaker 2: Gal on Instagram. She's on ten Killer Lake in Oklahoma
- 25:45Speaker 2: and fishing for a donation to the first Wisconsin Chapter
- 25:49Speaker 2: of Muskie's Ink. Christine, Welcome to the show.
- 25:53Speaker 7: Hey guys, how's it going.
- 25:54Speaker 2: We're doing good. Christine is pre fishing for a tournament today,
- 25:58Speaker 2: so tell us about the tournament that you'll be competing in.
- 26:02Speaker 9: So I am practicing for the bass Master Kayak Open
- 26:07Speaker 9: here on Lake Tenchio and Oklahoma. I think it's the
- 26:09Speaker 9: third open of the year. I've only fished here one
- 26:12Speaker 9: time before.
- 26:13Speaker 7: We had a.
- 26:13Speaker 9: Championship here last year. Different time of year, but this
- 26:17Speaker 9: lake is gorgeous, has big small mouth, large mouth. I've
- 26:20Speaker 9: had a pretty good bite going with the fish. The
- 26:23Speaker 9: lake is about seven ft flooded. The fish are kind
- 26:26Speaker 9: of spread out their post spawn, so bine stars few
- 26:29Speaker 9: and far between. But when you can get them to eat,
- 26:30Speaker 9: they're pretty pretty good sized.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Okay, tell us about your kayak setup that you got there.
- 26:36Speaker 9: I'm fishing out of a Hobie Pro Angler fourteen three sixty.
- 26:40Speaker 7: I'm keating. I got a little motor on the back.
- 26:43Speaker 9: Because you know, we get lazy in our old age.
- 26:46Speaker 9: I have two low ranch grafts up front. I've got
- 26:51Speaker 9: about fifteen rods with me right now. I've got a
- 26:56Speaker 9: few different patterns going and trying to just break down
- 26:59Speaker 9: this lake. I didn't get a ton of don't get
- 27:01Speaker 9: a ton of practice.
- 27:02Speaker 7: On this one. But yeah, it's a pretty good setup.
- 27:05Speaker 7: I love it. It's comfortable. I can stand up.
- 27:07Speaker 9: I usually stand and fish and use these two little
- 27:10Speaker 9: foot pedals right here for control steering, so I can
- 27:13Speaker 9: set my motor on you a mile and a half
- 27:15Speaker 9: an hour stand up, use punched in power fish and
- 27:18Speaker 9: run a patterns.
- 27:20Speaker 7: It's pretty effective for me.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Amazing little boat. Now, Christine is fished in one hundred
- 27:25Speaker 2: and seventy one kayak bass tournaments. She's placed in the
- 27:28Speaker 2: top ten and sixty of them and took first place
- 27:31Speaker 2: in ten of them. So Christine, give some advice to
- 27:34Speaker 2: folks listening who want to catch more fish from a kayak.
- 27:38Speaker 9: So the best advice I can give you got to
- 27:41Speaker 9: get out there and do it first and foremost kayaks
- 27:43Speaker 9: are great because it forces you to kind of really
- 27:46Speaker 9: learn an area.
- 27:47Speaker 7: So I always advocate for kayak fishing.
- 27:49Speaker 9: But I always tell people fish your confidence, fish your strength.
- 27:53Speaker 7: If you hear the doc talk that people.
- 27:55Speaker 9: Are crushing them on a crank a on a square bill,
- 27:57Speaker 9: and you don't necessarily love throwing a square bill, you're
- 28:00Speaker 9: not gonna catch those fitsch. So I always tell people
- 28:03Speaker 9: when it's tournament time, when it comes down to putting
- 28:05Speaker 9: fish in the boat, you need to fish your strength
- 28:07Speaker 9: no matter where you're at, Just try to find water
- 28:09Speaker 9: that suits your strength.
- 28:10Speaker 7: And because at the end.
- 28:12Speaker 9: Of the day, fish and how you like to fish,
- 28:15Speaker 9: that makes it a lot more fun too.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Good advice. Now for the one minute of fishing. What
- 28:19Speaker 2: kind of area are you in and what kind of
- 28:21Speaker 2: blue or are you throwing?
- 28:23Speaker 7: Well?
- 28:24Speaker 9: So, like I said, my my big small mouth and
- 28:27Speaker 9: large amount bai is few and far between. So I
- 28:30Speaker 9: came out to this little little island out here in
- 28:34Speaker 9: the middle of the lake, and I found some scattered bait.
- 28:36Speaker 7: Then there's some white bass. Actually caught two of them
- 28:39Speaker 7: while you guys were talking.
- 28:41Speaker 9: So I'm just I really wanna Yeah, I want to
- 28:44Speaker 9: be able to catch just a fish here. So I've
- 28:46Speaker 9: got a little little paddle tail swim bait and there's
- 28:48Speaker 9: a scattered bait, and there's some white bass kind of
- 28:50Speaker 9: cruising in the area.
- 28:52Speaker 7: I don't know if I can do it in a minute,
- 28:53Speaker 7: but I'm.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Gonna try, Okay, and standing or sitting.
- 28:57Speaker 9: I'm gonna sit because if I stand and I'm setting
- 28:59Speaker 9: you guys down on my kayak, ninety percent sure my
- 29:03Speaker 9: phone a goal in the water. So we don't want
- 29:05Speaker 9: to donate at the drink. I've done that a lot,
- 29:07Speaker 9: not today.
- 29:08Speaker 2: That's right.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Is it intimidating to know that all of your tournament
- 29:11Speaker 1: experience is culminating right now and meat eater one minute fishing,
- 29:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna lie.
- 29:17Speaker 9: I usually don't cave under pressure, but I'm feeling the
- 29:20Speaker 9: pressure on this one. You guys, I want I want
- 29:22Speaker 9: the Wisconsin Musky guys to get get a little donation.
- 29:26Speaker 7: Because I fish.
- 29:26Speaker 9: Musky's up there all the time, and I know, I mean,
- 29:29Speaker 9: this is more important than we win in this tournament.
- 29:31Speaker 7: Honestly, in my opinion, I love.
- 29:33Speaker 1: That attitude for you.
- 29:34Speaker 2: All Right, Christine, your one minute of fishing starts as
- 29:37Speaker 2: soon as you make your first cast.
- 29:40Speaker 7: Okay, okay, let's see.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Pick your spot.
- 29:48Speaker 2: All right, she's made cast. Got an interesting perspective here.
- 29:54Speaker 2: I've never watched someone fish from the bottom of feet before.
- 29:57Speaker 7: Don't don't put this on feet finder, Christine.
- 30:03Speaker 2: You're fifteen seconds in doing a little paddle tail. There's
- 30:09Speaker 2: some overcast today. Conditions look good, maybe a slight breeze.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I like it.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Thirty seconds to go, she's gonna make another cast.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Got time for another cast.
- 30:23Speaker 10: I love it.
- 30:24Speaker 1: That's some crucial mental game right there that you keep
- 30:27Speaker 1: playing it.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Verdian recast twenty seconds ago.
- 30:30Speaker 7: Christine, my heart's beating.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Ten seconds left. Need one white bass.
- 30:45Speaker 7: Oh they just came after this.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Oh, she had a bite right at the end. Your
- 30:52Speaker 2: one minute is up. Tell us what happened there, Christine.
- 30:56Speaker 9: Man, I had a little group of them right there,
- 30:59Speaker 9: and yeah, I didn't catch them.
- 31:01Speaker 7: They came after it.
- 31:02Speaker 9: But like I said, I've caught two here in the
- 31:04Speaker 9: last couple of minutes. I think, I think, I I
- 31:09Speaker 9: think they got smart to what I was doing.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Okay, they knew you were now on the show and
- 31:14Speaker 2: not just pre fishing for the show.
- 31:17Speaker 7: Sang thanks.
- 31:19Speaker 9: I've probably just thrown that I've been catching these big
- 31:21Speaker 9: small mouth on a big seven inch swim bait and
- 31:24Speaker 9: under skipping in her docks and around some what a cover.
- 31:27Speaker 7: I probably just should have rolled the that I got.
- 31:30Speaker 2: One last question, Christine. Ten Killer Lake is known for
- 31:33Speaker 2: a mythical freshwater octopus. Have you seen any evidence of
- 31:37Speaker 2: the freshwater octopus this week?
- 31:40Speaker 7: No?
- 31:40Speaker 9: But I think isn't a unagi? Is an octopus? Isn't
- 31:44Speaker 9: that Japanese unagi? That's one of my favorite, like shashimi things.
- 31:47Speaker 9: So if I do find okay, let you guys know
- 31:50Speaker 9: how that takes.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But I'd love to know. Not seeing any okay, the
- 31:56Speaker 2: ten Killer octopus continues to be elusive. All right, Thank
- 32:00Speaker 2: you for joining us.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Christine.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Good luck in the tournament this week.
- 32:03Speaker 7: Thank you, thank you.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Have you ever seen a kayak like that?
- 32:09Speaker 1: Man intense, like an arms race of kayaking?
- 32:12Speaker 3: Like all thanks, it's yeah, it's impressive. I mean there's
- 32:16Speaker 3: guys that are like doing offshore blue water fishing in
- 32:19Speaker 3: those things big time. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 32:23Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:23Speaker 2: All right, we're halfway through the show. Let's take a
- 32:25Speaker 2: break for some listener feedback. Phil, what's the chat have
- 32:28Speaker 2: to say?
- 32:29Speaker 5: Uh?
- 32:30Speaker 4: Yeah, Leland our guys, says cal What are you looking
- 32:32Speaker 4: forward to most about BHA Rendezvous?
- 32:35Speaker 5: Oh?
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we got rendezvous coming up starting. I'm gonna be
- 32:40Speaker 1: there all week. But it's June like fourteen, fifteen sixteen
- 32:44Speaker 1: and Missoula, Montana.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Yep.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Great people, fantastic people. We got a bunch of stuff
- 32:50Speaker 1: to recap. We gotta keep folks motivated on public lands.
- 32:56Speaker 1: We got corner crossing cases is getting revived at this point.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I kind of feel like we should be thanking iron
- 33:03Speaker 1: bar holdings because they just keep it. Yeah, because now
- 33:07Speaker 1: it's going to the highest court in the land, which
- 33:09Speaker 1: means corner crossing is going to be legal everywhere for
- 33:13Speaker 1: certain and it's gonna be on their dime, which is great.
- 33:17Speaker 2: What's kind of the general temperature on that right now?
- 33:19Speaker 2: Are people optimistic that they're going to side with the
- 33:23Speaker 2: hunters and public land users?
- 33:25Speaker 1: Well, you know, politics shouldn't come into play and stuff
- 33:28Speaker 1: like this, right, Like a judge is supposed to be impartial.
- 33:33Speaker 1: But I think that is the idea is that they're
- 33:37Speaker 1: going to lean way more conservative and they're going to
- 33:40Speaker 1: somehow turn it into a private property rights thing, where
- 33:45Speaker 1: I mean, it just is not right. It's like you're
- 33:47Speaker 1: stepping from public land to public land. There's a couple
- 33:51Speaker 1: of bad actors out there that are trying to monopolize
- 33:54Speaker 1: public land through the use of strategically purchased private land.
- 34:00Speaker 1: But man, I feel really good about it. I mean,
- 34:02Speaker 1: we have two federal court decisions.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the thing is, like the Supreme Court has
- 34:07Speaker 3: to find a good reason to not agree with the
- 34:10Speaker 3: decisions that were already made. Yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I think there's a high likelihood that the Supreme Court
- 34:14Speaker 1: is going to be like, this is not worth our
- 34:16Speaker 1: time or the taxpayer's time to review this. We defer
- 34:20Speaker 1: to the lower court.
- 34:21Speaker 2: So you expect there to be some chatter about that
- 34:23Speaker 2: at the bha Rendez vis Yeah.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I mean we'll have some panels on all the policy stuff,
- 34:28Speaker 1: and that's a huge reason that people show up. Me
- 34:31Speaker 1: say like here, you get to follow your cash in person, right,
- 34:35Speaker 1: become a member. This is what you're paying for, this
- 34:38Speaker 1: is what we're working on. Here's all the issues that
- 34:41Speaker 1: we're working across in North America. Plus there's really good
- 34:45Speaker 1: food and just it's it's a refreshing kind of refill
- 34:49Speaker 1: your cup type of experience. It's not draining like some
- 34:54Speaker 1: of these events that we all put together are so.
- 34:58Speaker 2: And Missoula's a good place to be in the summer.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Zula's a great place to be in the summer.
- 35:01Speaker 2: What else you got?
- 35:02Speaker 3: Phil H. Spencer.
- 35:04Speaker 4: I don't know if you watched the show last week,
- 35:05Speaker 4: but there was some debate about if they prefer the
- 35:07Speaker 4: free Wheel and Yanni show or the professional, you know
- 35:11Speaker 4: show that that you run. We've got a lot of
- 35:13Speaker 4: people asking for for random for hunting stories, for meandering
- 35:18Speaker 4: hunting stories, anything new you haven't shared yet.
- 35:23Speaker 2: I'm just trying to balance the shows out. You know,
- 35:26Speaker 2: if we sat around and I don't want us to
- 35:29Speaker 2: just talk about hunting stories every week. So I'm trying
- 35:31Speaker 2: to be the ying to Yanni's yen.
- 35:33Speaker 4: And I think I think that's good. I think I
- 35:35Speaker 4: think it should be a different show, different flavor based on.
- 35:37Speaker 3: Who's host is.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I'll tell you this, Yanni is back in one of
- 35:40Speaker 2: the host chairs next week. He's on a hunt right now.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Some ex so expect some hunting stories then. But in
- 35:46Speaker 2: the meantime, Cal Brody anything to share.
- 35:49Speaker 3: No, man, hunting season's over for me for a while.
- 35:52Speaker 3: It's fishing season now, garden season.
- 35:54Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 35:55Speaker 4: On that note, Sebastian says, two days left of turkey
- 35:57Speaker 4: hunting in New York, running gun or sitting Wait.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Go find them, Sebastian, New York's a big.
- 36:02Speaker 3: State, Like, gotta know a little more.
- 36:06Speaker 1: I mean, if you're already on birds, I would say
- 36:10Speaker 1: sit and wait, especially this time here and things just
- 36:14Speaker 1: are slowed down. Yeah, if you can get them to
- 36:17Speaker 1: talk to you one time, I'm like, Okay, they know
- 36:20Speaker 1: we're here. It's kind of like the best best move
- 36:23Speaker 1: you can make.
- 36:24Speaker 2: So but this late in the year, there's probably a
- 36:25Speaker 2: lot of vegetation for you to be uh sneak sneaking
- 36:28Speaker 2: around in what.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Else you got For another one from Sebastian, any update
- 36:32Speaker 4: on the venison beef jerky contest.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah, kind of. It's probably not gonna happen, Sebastian.
- 36:38Speaker 2: The suits here at Meat Eater said we shouldn't do that.
- 36:41Speaker 2: We shouldn't invite folks to send us food that we're
- 36:44Speaker 2: then going to eat, because someone's gonna get poisoned and
- 36:47Speaker 2: then we're gonna wind up in a lawsuit. So I
- 36:51Speaker 2: think we're maybe working on a pivot. I pounded the
- 36:55Speaker 2: table hard for us to do this. The idea being
- 36:57Speaker 2: that we're gonna, you know, bring in thirty venison jerkeys
- 37:01Speaker 2: from across the country from listeners. We're going to eat them,
- 37:04Speaker 2: we're going to rank the top three, we're going to
- 37:06Speaker 2: hand out some big prizes. But the suit says, no,
- 37:09Speaker 2: you're not. So that's where we're at right now, Sebastian.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Maybe later this year, maybe twenty twenty six. That's that's
- 37:16Speaker 2: your update.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Russell says he's going out for Idaho Spring Bear June
- 37:20Speaker 4: thirteenth to fourteenth, a little later than usual. Should I
- 37:22Speaker 4: not use the distress call? Or yeah? Should I not
- 37:25Speaker 4: use the distress call? Or stay with it? He says
- 37:27Speaker 4: he always spots and stocks, but this lady's looking for
- 37:29Speaker 4: a cruising boar cal Man.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Believe me.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I don't plug stuff just to plug stuff, but that
- 37:38Speaker 1: phelps fawn and distress call. And you just make it
- 37:42Speaker 1: sound like in your mind you want to crying human infant.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Like sick and dying human infant.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and you gotta have that.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Do you have that in your mind as you're hitting
- 37:54Speaker 1: that call, and you are not going to see like
- 37:59Speaker 1: a crazy amount of action, but it weeds out smaller bears.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So you're either going to get a big sal or
- 38:07Speaker 1: very confident and should be large.
- 38:10Speaker 3: Bore happening right in your face too.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, oh yeah, yeah, I'm not afraid to scream
- 38:17Speaker 1: on that thing.
- 38:18Speaker 8: Love it.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Find yourself a sick baby Russell.
- 38:20Speaker 4: All right, one one more quick one? Cody can film
- 38:23Speaker 4: make a new drop for the trivia tiebreaker question. I
- 38:26Speaker 4: think you're a You're a plant from Spencer Cody because
- 38:28Speaker 4: he's also asked for that, and I think I've got
- 38:30Speaker 4: I've got some spare time in the next couple of weeks,
- 38:31Speaker 4: I'll try to knock one out.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Okay, yea. The people are looking forward to it now.
- 38:35Speaker 2: He's made a promise on air so it's going to happen,
- 38:39Speaker 2: all right. Moving on, joining us on the line, last
- 38:41Speaker 2: is brock Wall, the founder of the newly formed North
- 38:44Speaker 2: American Pronghorn Foundation. Brock Welcome to the show, thy.
- 38:49Speaker 11: Guys, Thanks for thanks for having me. I'm really excited
- 38:52Speaker 11: to be here.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we are too. Then, the North American Pronghorn Foundation
- 38:56Speaker 2: is the only conservation group that's dedicated to antelope. Tell
- 38:59Speaker 2: us about how and why it was formed.
- 39:03Speaker 11: Sure.
- 39:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 39:04Speaker 11: At first, I would like to say too that there
- 39:06Speaker 11: are a couple of state based conservation groups dedicated to
- 39:10Speaker 11: pronghorn in Arizona and South Dakota or the two that
- 39:13Speaker 11: I know of, but we are indeed the only nationwide
- 39:17Speaker 11: one that is focused on pronghorn throughout North America the
- 39:21Speaker 11: entire continent. So I just wanted to make sure that
- 39:24Speaker 11: those those state based groups get some some love there.
- 39:27Speaker 11: But we really got started on Randy Newberg's Hunt talk form.
- 39:33Speaker 11: There was just kind of a conversation that took place.
- 39:37Speaker 11: Some some guys are asking why one doesn't exist, and
- 39:42Speaker 11: a few of us got together and said, well, there's
- 39:44Speaker 11: no better time to start than now. So we file
- 39:48Speaker 11: articles of incorporation and in twenty twenty four and got
- 39:52Speaker 11: started and we really felt like, you know, there's a
- 39:56Speaker 11: variety of reasons in terms of our why, but you know,
- 40:00Speaker 11: everything from you know, pronghorn populations just struggling a little bit,
- 40:05Speaker 11: you know, habitat problems, migration issues, to also just you know,
- 40:09Speaker 11: the with the amount of development that's going on and
- 40:12Speaker 11: the amount of pressure that you know, this Western hunting
- 40:16Speaker 11: is receiving, there's also just this need to get more
- 40:20Speaker 11: resources on the ground, whether you know, whether that's the
- 40:23Speaker 11: pronghorn or sage grouse or mule deer. I mean, there's
- 40:25Speaker 11: a whole host of species that benefit from the same
- 40:27Speaker 11: landscapes that pronghorn do. So we really just felt like
- 40:30Speaker 11: there was just no reason not to have this group
- 40:33Speaker 11: and no reason not to get it started.
- 40:36Speaker 2: And what are the current initiatives of the North American
- 40:39Speaker 2: Pronghorn Foundation.
- 40:41Speaker 11: Well, right now, you know, we're still new, so we're
- 40:44Speaker 11: just just over a month old. We went live on
- 40:47Speaker 11: April twenty first here of this year, and so so
- 40:51Speaker 11: far the things that we've been focused on are trying
- 40:53Speaker 11: to get some policy comments out there in for some
- 40:59Speaker 11: BLM style for some migration corridor designations, and then we're
- 41:04Speaker 11: also working on trying to set up a fencing project
- 41:07Speaker 11: here in northeast Montana. Not one hundred percent sure if
- 41:10Speaker 11: that's gonna all come together here this year, but we're
- 41:14Speaker 11: super excited about it because we're able to, you know,
- 41:17Speaker 11: get some local stakeholders on the ground, both landowners, other
- 41:20Speaker 11: conservation groups, and utilize GPS caller data from pronghorn in
- 41:26Speaker 11: that exact area. So we're really hoping to bring that
- 41:29Speaker 11: added value to that pronghorn research in cooperation with a
- 41:32Speaker 11: bunch of partners. And then you know, really, I don't
- 41:35Speaker 11: know that this will be really qualify as an initiative,
- 41:38Speaker 11: but really, membership growth is a big priority right now.
- 41:41Speaker 11: You know, we have some really lofty goals and we'd
- 41:43Speaker 11: really like to be able to do some big things
- 41:47Speaker 11: around around the entire West, and in order to do that,
- 41:49Speaker 11: we're going to need a lot of money. And so
- 41:51Speaker 11: membership growth is really something that we're focused on and
- 41:54Speaker 11: really trying to grow that membership so we can take
- 41:57Speaker 11: that money, turn it around and put it right on
- 41:59Speaker 11: the ground.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Data shows that prong horn populations are down about twenty
- 42:03Speaker 2: percent across the entire continent over the last few years.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Talk to us about what the greatest challenges they're facing
- 42:09Speaker 2: is and why that might be.
- 42:12Speaker 11: Yeah, there's a few things that pronghorn are really struggling with,
- 42:16Speaker 11: and one is winters, obviously, and I think, you know,
- 42:21Speaker 11: you probably wouldn't be correct to say that, well, there's
- 42:23Speaker 11: not much we're going to be able to do about winters,
- 42:26Speaker 11: and that's true. However, you know, it's when we highlight
- 42:30Speaker 11: the fact that winters are increasing mortality. There's a couple
- 42:33Speaker 11: of variables there that I think are really important to
- 42:36Speaker 11: point out as to what is making those winters, you know,
- 42:39Speaker 11: so hard on pronghorn. And certainly, you know, extreme winters
- 42:44Speaker 11: with a lot of snowpack, there's gonna be some die
- 42:47Speaker 11: off and you can't really do anything about that. However,
- 42:50Speaker 11: you know, we have examples from other research data, from
- 42:54Speaker 11: observational data, anecdotal data from landowners where they're noticing that
- 42:58Speaker 11: during those storms, those those pronghorn are trying to migrate
- 43:02Speaker 11: and they're getting stuck in certain areas because offences or
- 43:05Speaker 11: man made barriers, or another element would be you know,
- 43:09Speaker 11: maybe their winter range habitat where or they're only planning
- 43:12Speaker 11: or intending on being at in the winter is degraded
- 43:15Speaker 11: so much or non existent that you know, they just
- 43:19Speaker 11: don't have the nutrition on the landscape to make it
- 43:21Speaker 11: through that winter. And you know, related to that, I mean,
- 43:24Speaker 11: something that's really interesting to think about when we think
- 43:27Speaker 11: about habitat degradation for pronghorn is that in the last
- 43:30Speaker 11: twenty years. So I think it was the USDA or
- 43:34Speaker 11: maybe it was the USGS that came out with a
- 43:37Speaker 11: study and they looked at sage brush from the years
- 43:40Speaker 11: two thousand and one to twenty twenty, and over that
- 43:43Speaker 11: twenty year time period, they found that western United States
- 43:46Speaker 11: was losing a million, just over a million acres of
- 43:50Speaker 11: sage brush per year. And that's I mean, that's prime
- 43:54Speaker 11: forage for pronghorn, it's prime winter habitat, it's prime falling habitat.
- 43:58Speaker 11: So you know, it's things like that that we would
- 44:01Speaker 11: really like to be able to throw some money on,
- 44:05Speaker 11: throw some some volunteer power on, and some attention to
- 44:08Speaker 11: to to really get things turned the other direction.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Now, I saw that your first policy action was to
- 44:14Speaker 2: support the removal of feral horses from Blm Land in Wyoming.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Tell us about that.
- 44:21Speaker 11: Yeah, so I know this can be a controversial issue
- 44:24Speaker 11: and We certainly don't want to be insensitive to the
- 44:28Speaker 11: folks that are really big horse fans. I mean, we
- 44:30Speaker 11: have nothing against horses. My uh, I grew up with horses.
- 44:33Speaker 11: My mom was was really big into horses, and so
- 44:36Speaker 11: I'm used to being around them. But you know, it's
- 44:40Speaker 11: pretty hard to deny and there's a lot of you know,
- 44:43Speaker 11: published peer reviewed research that supports this idea that you know,
- 44:48Speaker 11: wild horses or feral horses can be really hard on
- 44:52Speaker 11: native landscape one because their populations just blow up. They
- 44:56Speaker 11: don't really have any natural predators, and so you know,
- 45:00Speaker 11: it's really not uncommon for them to you know, double
- 45:03Speaker 11: their population in a really short period of time on
- 45:07Speaker 11: a landscape that is really not suited for them. And
- 45:10Speaker 11: so what you end up getting is end up getting
- 45:11Speaker 11: a lot of damage to save brush, a lot of
- 45:13Speaker 11: damage to winter range, damage to water infrastructure, and it's
- 45:17Speaker 11: just you know, those horses are are out competing native species,
- 45:21Speaker 11: particularly pronghorn, mule deer and sage grouse are really you
- 45:25Speaker 11: know some of those those species that are most affected.
- 45:27Speaker 11: And so the BLM has really been on a sort
- 45:30Speaker 11: of initiative to to try to get this under control
- 45:35Speaker 11: and try to remove some of these horses from the
- 45:37Speaker 11: landscape so we can start doing some work for the
- 45:39Speaker 11: native species that I know a lot of the hunters
- 45:41Speaker 11: and anglers like myself are really want, and so that
- 45:45Speaker 11: we could start making some headway on savedbrush restoration and
- 45:49Speaker 11: things of that nature. And so for us, it was
- 45:51Speaker 11: really just about prioritizing pronghorn and their habitat over the
- 45:56Speaker 11: feral horses that are not native and are almost everywhere.
- 46:00Speaker 11: In every case, they are vastly overpopulated.
- 46:04Speaker 4: Brock.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I just spoke with the rancher in California who's got
- 46:08Speaker 1: a native population a pronghorn on his ranch, not huttable,
- 46:13Speaker 1: but he's going to join us at field Table this
- 46:16Speaker 1: year at Rendezvous, so you got to meet up with
- 46:18Speaker 1: him and talk. He's actually has a fencing business where
- 46:24Speaker 1: he goes through and does some of that mitigation work
- 46:27Speaker 1: for wildlife passage.
- 46:30Speaker 11: Very cool. Yeah, I'd love to meet him.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Yeah, Brock. I also read you say that Wyoming has
- 46:36Speaker 2: some of the best infrastructure in place for antelope and
- 46:39Speaker 2: some other states need to catch up. What does that
- 46:41Speaker 2: mean exactly?
- 46:43Speaker 11: Well, I don't want to make that sound like you know,
- 46:45Speaker 11: the other states aren't doing or pulling their weight. I
- 46:48Speaker 11: think part of what we're observing here is just the
- 46:51Speaker 11: fact that Wyoming is sparsely populated, which gives them a
- 46:54Speaker 11: little bit of advantage when they're trying to deal with
- 46:55Speaker 11: some of this stuff in terms of wildlife and habitat.
- 46:59Speaker 11: But you know, they really have devoted a lot of resources.
- 47:01Speaker 11: You know, they've they've gotten a lot of support for
- 47:03Speaker 11: these things on a political level, through a management level
- 47:06Speaker 11: and an administration level, and so you know, they just
- 47:09Speaker 11: have the right resources in place. They've had the right
- 47:12Speaker 11: support for it, the right public support for it, and
- 47:16Speaker 11: I think it's just put them in a position where
- 47:17Speaker 11: they're able to utilize you know, cooperative research unit funding.
- 47:21Speaker 11: You know, through the Wyoming Migration initiative's done some fantastic
- 47:25Speaker 11: and incredible, you know, really groundbreaking work on migrations for
- 47:30Speaker 11: a variety of species. And so I think, you know,
- 47:33Speaker 11: when we look at places like Colorado or Montana, Idaho, Nevada,
- 47:37Speaker 11: New Mexico, and Arizona, you know, we're starting to see
- 47:40Speaker 11: some of that similar migration research and things like that
- 47:43Speaker 11: being done. But I really think that what we say
- 47:47Speaker 11: when we mean what we mean when we say that
- 47:50Speaker 11: is really just to try to get everybody else operating
- 47:53Speaker 11: sort of with that same intent, to really try to
- 47:55Speaker 11: figure out what pronghorn need, where they're at on the
- 48:00Speaker 11: ground at different times a year, and what their challenges are.
- 48:03Speaker 11: And there's just, you know, very few tools out there
- 48:06Speaker 11: that will beat a GPS caller to tell you all
- 48:09Speaker 11: that stuff.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Last thing, how can listeners support the North American prong
- 48:13Speaker 2: Horn Foundation.
- 48:16Speaker 11: Right now? You can go to our website which is
- 48:18Speaker 11: pronghorns dot org, so that's pronghorns with an S dot
- 48:22Speaker 11: org and that is our website. You can buy memberships there.
- 48:27Speaker 11: You can go to our merch store and order T
- 48:30Speaker 11: shirts and hats, things of that nature. And then we
- 48:32Speaker 11: also have an Instagram which is napp Official so napf
- 48:37Speaker 11: Underscore Official, and then you can look us up on
- 48:40Speaker 11: Facebook as well. And we really want your membership. Like
- 48:43Speaker 11: I said, we are really trying to grow this organization
- 48:46Speaker 11: into something that's impactful and so we would love for
- 48:49Speaker 11: you to give us thirty five dollars and let us
- 48:52Speaker 11: prove to you that we are are who we say
- 48:55Speaker 11: we are and we're going to do what we say
- 48:56Speaker 11: we're going to do.
- 48:57Speaker 2: Again, that is Pronghorns dot org. Brock, thanks for joining us,
- 49:01Speaker 2: and thanks for sticking up for anelope.
- 49:04Speaker 11: Thanks for having me. Guys appreciate it.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Cal It's been too long for us to not have
- 49:09Speaker 2: a prong horn federation or foundation at a national level.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean for such a crazy, iconic, unique native species,
- 49:20Speaker 1: like truly native, it's really wild. Once you understand how
- 49:28Speaker 1: pronghorn are managed differently state to state, or you could
- 49:33Speaker 1: say not managed at all state to state, it's like
- 49:37Speaker 1: a giant loophole. So putting some more more focus getting
- 49:41Speaker 1: that magnifying glass on this species is certainly needed. And
- 49:46Speaker 1: Brocks correct, right, like that sagebrush ecosystem or grasslands, we're
- 49:51Speaker 1: losing about two million acres a year right now, so
- 49:54Speaker 1: it's the most imperiled ecosystem in the world, not just
- 49:58Speaker 1: the United States.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Again, that's longhorns dot org. Consider joining the North American
- 50:03Speaker 2: Pronghorn Foundation. All right, last thing for today is the
- 50:11Speaker 2: Hot tip Off.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Turn your head and give what's that face?
- 50:22Speaker 11: I don't have any hot tip's salty.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Hot tip off is where two listeners go head to
- 50:36Speaker 2: head with competing pieces of advice, and after we hear
- 50:39Speaker 2: each tip, we'll declare which one is hotter. If you
- 50:41Speaker 2: have a hot tip, take a one minute video on
- 50:43Speaker 2: your phone and email it to Radio at the medeater
- 50:46Speaker 2: dot com with the subject line hot Tip Off. This
- 50:49Speaker 2: week it's Matt Short versus Ben Hunter, and they're competing
- 50:52Speaker 2: for a copy of Catch a Crayfish, Count the Stars
- 50:55Speaker 2: paperback edition as well as an m k C Flat
- 50:59Speaker 2: tail knife. And we have a special guest judge joining
- 51:02Speaker 2: us today, Steven Ranella, because these are hot tips about
- 51:06Speaker 2: parenting and Cal and I have yet to reproduce and
- 51:08Speaker 2: you have, so we brought you into the studio to
- 51:11Speaker 2: decide who So you guys.
- 51:12Speaker 3: Are you guys even voting or is it the.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Listeners vote?
- 51:18Speaker 8: But this is like very identity politics.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Maybe Steve can sway their vote.
- 51:22Speaker 3: I think I thought we were weighing in, Corey.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Everybody can weigh in in.
- 51:28Speaker 10: But I'm the judge, right If I'm not, I mean,
- 51:31Speaker 10: am I to say or not to say?
- 51:33Speaker 2: Listen? What do we think?
- 51:34Speaker 3: I'm a parent? Too?
- 51:35Speaker 11: Man?
- 51:35Speaker 3: I got rights.
- 51:39Speaker 2: We're gonna let the chat decide, Like that's my truth.
- 51:42Speaker 2: We're gonna let the chat decide. Those of folks are
- 51:45Speaker 2: gonna before we go.
- 51:48Speaker 3: Both of the people that are competing, get a copy.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Not just okay.
- 51:52Speaker 3: The real prize is the second right here that they're
- 51:55Speaker 3: gonna give to their kid, and so their kid can remember.
- 51:58Speaker 10: Tell your kid cut towards your body.
- 52:02Speaker 2: Uh huh. So, Steve, you're gonna need to watch the
- 52:04Speaker 2: screen behind you. Phil, Phil is gonna play these hot
- 52:06Speaker 2: tip offs. Take it away, Phil. Benjamin Hunter. Wow, my
- 52:15Speaker 2: name is.
- 52:15Speaker 12: Benjamin Hunter, and he has a hot tip taking kids fishing.
- 52:17Speaker 7: Make your own moors.
- 52:19Speaker 12: Go to the thrift store and buy some cheap spoons
- 52:21Speaker 12: from the silver aisle. Then go home and cut off
- 52:23Speaker 12: the handles with a hacksaw. File off the sharp edges,
- 52:27Speaker 12: and droll hole about an eighth of an inch from
- 52:29Speaker 12: each in. Now that you have should look something like this.
- 52:34Speaker 12: Now attach a split ring to each end and put
- 52:36Speaker 12: a trouble hook at the bottom. Tie it off to
- 52:39Speaker 12: your line and go fishing. Not only can this be
- 52:41Speaker 12: an effective lure, but it is also fun to catch
- 52:44Speaker 12: fish on a lure you've made, it's.
- 52:47Speaker 10: Gonna be hard to beat that the other one.
- 52:51Speaker 6: Well. Matt Short, Hey, what's up meat? Eat to crew.
- 52:57Speaker 6: My name is Matt Short from Firestone, Colorado, and he
- 53:00Speaker 6: is a hot tip every parent knows that the success
- 53:03Speaker 6: of their outing with kids is dependent on keeping them fed,
- 53:07Speaker 6: warm and dry. But nothing will end your family fishing trip, day, hike,
- 53:14Speaker 6: upland hunt faster than a bathroom emergency gone wrong. I
- 53:19Speaker 6: can't even count on my two hands how many times
- 53:22Speaker 6: my own kid's inability to judge when their next valve
- 53:25Speaker 6: movement should be has ended one of our trips. That's
- 53:28Speaker 6: why I've come up with kid poop bags. Pretty simple concept.
- 53:32Speaker 6: Zip blog bag, toilet paper, dog poop bag. Right, if
- 53:36Speaker 6: you want to get fancy with it, grab yourself some
- 53:39Speaker 6: sanitization wipes. If you don't have a dog and don't
- 53:42Speaker 6: have readily access access to these poop bags, run down
- 53:45Speaker 6: to your local park. I guarantee you there's a lovely
- 53:47Speaker 6: little dispenser there you can grab a couple for yourself.
- 53:49Speaker 6: I put every single one of I put one of
- 53:51Speaker 6: these in every single one of my bags. That way
- 53:54Speaker 6: I'm always ready. Kid needs to take a dump, I
- 53:56Speaker 6: go great, drop it on the ground, pick it up
- 53:58Speaker 6: like it's a dog, Wipe him up, hand, sanitize myself.
- 54:03Speaker 6: Everything goes back in my zip block baggie. I pack
- 54:05Speaker 6: it out and we keep on trucking. Don't let your
- 54:08Speaker 6: kids incontinence or lack of judgment of when is a
- 54:11Speaker 6: good time to drop a load in your next family adventure.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Steve thinking a tie.
- 54:17Speaker 8: You only got one knife, man, we're gonna have to
- 54:20Speaker 8: find another one. I'll give him one of my personal
- 54:22Speaker 8: knives out of my personal box and knife.
- 54:24Speaker 2: You're gonna pick Matt poop bag over the little kid
- 54:27Speaker 2: who's making his own fishing lue.
- 54:29Speaker 8: Well, I like the kid because he's cute. Yeah, the
- 54:31Speaker 8: whole thing's cute. It's just cute. And I'll get out
- 54:33Speaker 8: the whole thing making lures. The fact that the kid presented, well, yeah,
- 54:37Speaker 8: I love everything about it.
- 54:38Speaker 2: Okay, that's good.
- 54:41Speaker 8: I mean it's all good.
- 54:43Speaker 10: Normally, what would have happened Normally I would watch and
- 54:46Speaker 10: out belittle one of them.
- 54:48Speaker 8: I mean I would be like that. But they're they're
- 54:50Speaker 8: so strong.
- 54:51Speaker 2: You're in a good mood today.
- 54:52Speaker 1: No, And they have noy components, right, the material is
- 54:55Speaker 1: so strong, uh huh.
- 54:58Speaker 10: And and notice the guy with the poop bag. He's
- 55:01Speaker 10: also getting into cleanup. He's not like, hey, scrabs the
- 55:06Speaker 10: toilet paper because then you just leave it behind. He's
- 55:09Speaker 10: bagging it up when it happens in an inopportune location.
- 55:14Speaker 10: There's no way that I can in good conscience.
- 55:18Speaker 2: That's why the Chad is going to vote. Oh, Phil,
- 55:21Speaker 2: is the chad voting?
- 55:23Speaker 3: I'm voting for the kid.
- 55:24Speaker 4: I didn't put up an official poll. I can if
- 55:26Speaker 4: we've got like, uh yeah, give a minute, I'm going.
- 55:28Speaker 8: To bring on personal knife for my personal stash.
- 55:31Speaker 2: Wow, and who Benjamin?
- 55:34Speaker 3: This new one's yours?
- 55:35Speaker 8: Sure that's the kid?
- 55:36Speaker 2: Right?
- 55:37Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't wouldn't it be more special for the
- 55:40Speaker 2: kid to have Steve Ranella's knife though, Oh there you go.
- 55:43Speaker 3: He could sign it.
- 55:43Speaker 8: I don't care. I'm just not picking between the two.
- 55:46Speaker 2: I would vote for the kid because he's a kid.
- 55:48Speaker 2: Because he's a kid.
- 55:49Speaker 8: Yeah yeah, but that's identity politics.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Brody, Brody, who you voting?
- 55:52Speaker 3: I'd vote for the kid because I'm not down on
- 55:56Speaker 3: the other one. You can always dig a hole. And honestly, man,
- 56:00Speaker 3: I don't know how many times that's actually happened to
- 56:04Speaker 3: me with my kids, what.
- 56:06Speaker 13: Like a total like, oh my god, Brody just makes
- 56:09Speaker 13: me eat a bag of cheese curds. It's we're gonna
- 56:15Speaker 13: fish all day, eat the sack of curd's.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Not like something that's happened to me enough times to.
- 56:21Speaker 8: Like, well, if I came down, listen, did I come down?
- 56:24Speaker 6: Here?
- 56:25Speaker 8: Are we whistling Dixie?
- 56:26Speaker 6: Or?
- 56:26Speaker 8: Am I the judge?
- 56:28Speaker 3: Oh?
- 56:28Speaker 2: You can be the judge, it's all you.
- 56:30Speaker 10: I'm gonna send him a private personal knife the kid.
- 56:34Speaker 10: The kid gets the nice, fancy new knife. I'm gonna
- 56:36Speaker 10: send the guy. I'm gonna send him something for my
- 56:42Speaker 10: personal stash.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Uncle, cal what do you think? Who would you pick?
- 56:47Speaker 1: Man? I I like them both a lot. They're super prepared,
- 56:51Speaker 1: and if I had to pick one, I like the
- 56:57Speaker 1: recycling and the packing in packing out stuff too.
- 57:01Speaker 10: He's not swayed by the kid being a kid. Today's
- 57:03Speaker 10: kids are tomorrow's enemies.
- 57:04Speaker 2: Oh that's what they say.
- 57:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I have a run.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I'd like to shove that kid down when I see like,
- 57:13Speaker 1: why camp because it's easier now when he gets big?
- 57:16Speaker 8: Why camp?
- 57:16Speaker 1: The community and forest parenting?
- 57:19Speaker 5: Now?
- 57:19Speaker 3: Granted, I think that, like if everyone had the same
- 57:22Speaker 3: attitude about the poop thing, like adults are bigger culprits
- 57:26Speaker 3: and kids, I think.
- 57:28Speaker 8: Yeah, bigger poops, like the kid. I love kids, I
- 57:33Speaker 8: mean I got most of them. Yeah, I mean like
- 57:36Speaker 8: most of the time. I like like, I like like,
- 57:39Speaker 8: I like the idea of them, I like mine most
- 57:41Speaker 8: of the time.
- 57:42Speaker 2: Love them.
- 57:43Speaker 8: He did a great job, presents well all right materials.
- 57:46Speaker 4: After thirty seconds left of him, I.
- 57:49Speaker 8: Just can't disrespect the dude. So let the kid win.
- 57:53Speaker 8: Let him win. He wins. But I'm sending the guy
- 57:57Speaker 8: a little something from the private stash, and he gets
- 57:59Speaker 8: a book.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Anyway, There's there's a good reason I'm not a dad,
- 58:02Speaker 2: but it's hard for me to fathom pick it up.
- 58:04Speaker 2: A kid's poop out in nature. Oh no, thank you.
- 58:06Speaker 8: I got a story interesting, not mine.
- 58:11Speaker 3: Listen, after you change a few diapers, I'm not either.
- 58:15Speaker 3: You get poop under your fingernails and it's like a
- 58:17Speaker 3: big deal.
- 58:17Speaker 8: Do I really only have thirty thirty?
- 58:20Speaker 6: He was.
- 58:22Speaker 8: Tell quick story.
- 58:24Speaker 10: So one time when I was in high school, we
- 58:26Speaker 10: got a job where there's a guy building a loghouse
- 58:31Speaker 10: and he bought there's this old farmer, old man Burns,
- 58:35Speaker 10: and he had a big red pine plantation, and he
- 58:38Speaker 10: bought all these red pines from mister Burns who one
- 58:42Speaker 10: time on his farm. This is a little side story,
- 58:45Speaker 10: a bullet killed a kid on his farm.
- 58:46Speaker 8: One time. Wow, yeah, bull killed a kid on his farm.
- 58:49Speaker 2: Like stopped on him.
- 58:51Speaker 10: So before my time, this is a deep past. He
- 58:55Speaker 10: was a pumpkin farmer. I used to go and help
- 58:57Speaker 10: him load the pumpkins and drive him down because he's
- 59:00Speaker 10: hold him to the local grocery stores. Anyhow, this guy
- 59:03Speaker 10: buys these red pines from him, but he needs him
- 59:08Speaker 10: cut and hauled out and stuck in a field. So
- 59:11Speaker 10: we signed a little contract with him. He's going to
- 59:13Speaker 10: give us five dollars apiece and use a forward tractor
- 59:17Speaker 10: of his to cut limb move out to where they
- 59:22Speaker 10: can be picked up in a truck, and put them
- 59:24Speaker 10: up on stickers to get them off the ground.
- 59:27Speaker 8: One hundred.
- 59:29Speaker 10: Trees five bucks a tree. Well, we get done, and
- 59:33Speaker 10: we had popped a hole as well as Brian filled tires.
- 59:36Speaker 10: We'd hit a stump and put a big hole in
- 59:38Speaker 10: the Brian filled tire. We get all done with the
- 59:41Speaker 10: job and he informs us, hey, we're even. Oh no,
- 59:46Speaker 10: we're even because it costs so much to buy a
- 59:49Speaker 10: new tractor tire.
- 59:49Speaker 3: How old are you?
- 59:50Speaker 8: High school? We go home and tell our dad and
- 59:54Speaker 8: that is just not acceptable to our dad.
- 59:58Speaker 10: Our dad gets him on the phone and say, here's
- 1:00:00Speaker 10: what's gonna happen with this five hundred dollars. And then
- 1:00:04Speaker 10: my dad says to us, he's waiting with your five
- 1:00:06Speaker 10: hundred dollars at the job site. So we go to
- 1:00:10Speaker 10: the job site and he's got to go his five
- 1:00:11Speaker 10: hundred bucks. But you know what, the main thing, our
- 1:00:13Speaker 10: main takeaway was he happened to be there with his grandson,
- 1:00:18Speaker 10: and his grandson had just shad his pants, and as
- 1:00:21Speaker 10: we show up, he's trying to clean up the grandson.
- 1:00:25Speaker 10: And we thought at that time, before we had our
- 1:00:27Speaker 10: own kids, we thought that that was the come uppings.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Oh you got him, he had a clean up.
- 1:00:34Speaker 8: Yeah, like ha ha ha. Right now, I've done that myself.
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: I don't know how many times.
- 1:00:40Speaker 10: Oh so you you had something coming to you then,
- 1:00:42Speaker 10: But I just felt like a punishment worse than losing
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: five hundred bucks would be to clean up with child's feet.
- 1:00:47Speaker 10: And then then I had kids, and then we just
- 1:00:50Speaker 10: eat it now like it that you're just drowning in it.
- 1:00:56Speaker 10: You're drowning in it, man, not anymore.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: You were telling me how great kids are.
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: With you.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: You were just telling me how great kids are.
- 1:01:03Speaker 8: For a while, and you just it's just everywhere, It's
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: on everything, wiping on your pants.
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Oh yeah, nouro virus every other week.
- 1:01:11Speaker 8: Now, I love that kid though. That was great. Thanks
- 1:01:13Speaker 8: for having me down.
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: With seventy two percent of the vote, Ben, the kid
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: wins landslide.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: But we had a lot of.
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: People in the chat basically agreeing with Steve saying that
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: the poop bags probably a more practical helpful tip, but
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: the kid kicks ass.
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: So yeah.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Well as the guy who had to filter through about
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: a dozen entries for this, well, thank you everybody, but
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: this was tough.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Next time, we can't. We should mix kids and adults.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: We should do kids an adults, kids against each other, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: Survival of the Fittest, Lord of the Flies, and.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Then eventually you could see if there's a bracket system
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: where the kid could out compete.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: The adult kids, put the kids against each other.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Well on, Ben, Well done, Matt, thanks for sending those in. Steve,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: you got time to stick around for the chat.
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: Sure, okay, I've having a time of my life.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Oh okay, great, Phil, what questions you got? This is
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: the end of the show. We'll answer a few questions
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: and Steve is gonna stay around to.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: Yeah, if you have any questions for Steve, get him
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: in there right now. You don't have a lot of time.
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: I would say, let's see uh Leland our guy once again.
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: Favorite way to prepare rainbow trout and Steve. If you've
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: got something, Oh, you know, it's a lot of fun.
- 1:02:29Speaker 10: There's a there's a dish called it's in French, will
- 1:02:33Speaker 10: be blue trout truth all blue, truthdall one where you
- 1:02:39Speaker 10: you drop them, it's gotta be real fresh and brand new.
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: It's gotta still have its nice color. And you make
- 1:02:44Speaker 10: this this heavily vinegard like poaching liquid.
- 1:02:50Speaker 8: And for whatever reason, I don't understand the chemistry of
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: it when you when.
- 1:02:54Speaker 10: You drop that brand new fresh trout and like the
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: French will do it where they'll drop they'll they'll like
- 1:03:01Speaker 10: stun the trout and do it. You gotta do it
- 1:03:02Speaker 10: that fast, and the trout turns blue. I'm not kidding you,
- 1:03:05Speaker 10: it turns blue electric blue. Okay, if it's like some
- 1:03:11Speaker 10: old trout has been tied to a string out in
- 1:03:13Speaker 10: the creek, you know it's not gonna do it. But
- 1:03:15Speaker 10: it's got that one in the smoker ye truth doll
- 1:03:18Speaker 10: blue is a lot of fun just to just to
- 1:03:20Speaker 10: watch the thing happen.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: It's like a traditional like gut them, leave the head
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: on stuff there, tummy with lemon and herbs, and it
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: just makes fun, just looks nice. Yeah, cal brody, anything.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Down tinfoil packets. I mean, leland of your program, You're
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: you're running a bunch of volunteers out there. I have
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: an assembly line with tinfoil.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: Packets like yep, lemon, slices of lemon, A lot of butter,
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: a lot of butter.
- 1:03:48Speaker 10: My dad used to They used to talk about wrapping
- 1:03:50Speaker 10: them and leaves and then packing them in mud and
- 1:03:53Speaker 10: cooking them.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: Oh that's cool.
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: Yeah, I'd like to try that sometimes.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Fill else.
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Trey asks, Well, first, he says, I love having bears
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: on my land, but they're starting to tear feeders down.
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: What can I do to keep them around but not
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: have them tear things up?
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Remove your feeds?
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: Is he talking about deer feeders?
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: He's talking about trying to feed deer be my guest.
- 1:04:16Speaker 10: Well, I don't know if you're gonna dissuade him from
- 1:04:18Speaker 10: that man? No way too, because you ever see that
- 1:04:21Speaker 10: time they took that dead deer and electrified.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: It orizzy bears like.
- 1:04:26Speaker 10: Fives likedow just like eventually he just gets the deer.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Yeah, eventually it just gets angry enough to where he's like,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I'm just gonna take it.
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: He starts unplugging stuff. Yeah.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: I think if you love having them on your land,
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: you're just gonna have to learn to coexist with them.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: If you got deer feeders out, what.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Else you got?
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: Phil uh Mogor asks Steve, when was the last time
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: you went on a hunt? Uh without cameras?
- 1:04:50Speaker 8: Or last week?
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: I think people think that you are constantly being followed
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: by by cinematographers, But you go, you're you're out there
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: all the time.
- 1:04:59Speaker 8: Yeah, mostly I mean out with my kids so a ton,
- 1:05:02Speaker 8: but generally with my kids. But we just got back
- 1:05:04Speaker 8: from hunting.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: How'd that go? Great?
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: My boy got his first bear?
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: How many more bears died on that hunt?
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: Our party had three?
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: Okay?
- 1:05:12Speaker 10: Well yeah, our little group had three, but we weren't
- 1:05:17Speaker 10: all together. I was there for two of them. I
- 1:05:20Speaker 10: was present for two when I was three hundred yards.
- 1:05:22Speaker 10: Everything went well, Oh yeah, a great time bade You.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: Guys saw some some bear love making on that trip, didn't.
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: We killed two boars that I was there for one,
- 1:05:31Speaker 10: not for the other one. That that we watched the
- 1:05:33Speaker 10: a boar breed us out for twenty minutes.
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: I'm not kidding you.
- 1:05:35Speaker 10: You think people thick like like I'm saying twenty minutes,
- 1:05:38Speaker 10: like meaning it was seven, but I'm saying twenty we
- 1:05:40Speaker 10: watched a boar breed us out twenty minutes.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Did the twenty minutes end when the boar was shot?
- 1:05:46Speaker 8: Or no, I don't know why he walked away and
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: started feeding?
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Okay, and you don't know why he walked away?
- 1:05:52Speaker 8: No, I mean I since I don't know why he
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: walked away. But they would like like.
- 1:05:59Speaker 10: It was I don't know, I haven't watched enough, Like
- 1:06:02Speaker 10: the first one they watched, the sow was receptive. In
- 1:06:08Speaker 10: this case, it was hard to tell like what level
- 1:06:10Speaker 10: of receptivity there and what level of sort of like
- 1:06:12Speaker 10: just so there's like a lot of display and a
- 1:06:15Speaker 10: lot of foreplay well like like fitting, I don't know,
- 1:06:18Speaker 10: like fitness, Yeah, like you're like testing fitness. You're like
- 1:06:22Speaker 10: she's like sussing out the cape whatever. A lot of
- 1:06:26Speaker 10: like theatrics there were sometimes like our our My initial
- 1:06:31Speaker 10: instinct was was two borers fighting. Then at a distance
- 1:06:36Speaker 10: when I couldn't see clear, I was like, maybe it's
- 1:06:37Speaker 10: just like two you know, a cubs ice fight, Like
- 1:06:40Speaker 10: maybe that's what's going on.
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: Then eventually I'm like, oh no, it's like a mating ritual.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Surprised it was that ambiguous that it because they were
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: through there was they were obscured.
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: You can just see like a lot of black, like
- 1:06:51Speaker 8: you know, you know. But but once we got clear,
- 1:06:53Speaker 8: I mean we were like we were we were sixty yards.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Your comment about like perceived time versus actual time, Yeah,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: I ran a little experiment during Turkey season, and because
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: you're always like, you're like, all this major saga is
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: playing out, and and how you know, we got to
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: allocate the right amount of time to this and when
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to move, and went out to move. So when I
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: struck the bird, I hit the timer on my phone
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: smart yep. And then and then we have this huge
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: saga like no calling and not responding and what the
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: hell is going on? And then eventually the bird calls
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: and oh my god, he's coming in and and he
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: skirts us and then lo and behold there's another tom
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: down there, and oh now he's coming in and and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: all these mental gymnastics. The shotgun goes off. I hit
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: the stop on the timer thirteen minutes.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Man, and it felt like way exactly.
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: It's so painful.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: You're getting ready to walk somewhere else, go go get
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: the truck, not somewhere.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: They Let's do a couple more before we close this out.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: Yeah, sure thing.
- 1:08:05Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Nick says question for Steve, and he plans to do
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: some upland hunting in the near future. And I would
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: rephrase that by saying, Steve, what do you have against
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: upland hunting?
- 1:08:14Speaker 8: Does hunt blue grouse count Yeah?
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Okay, boy, we can't.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: We did some camping this past weekend and those blue
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: grause were doing their thing. Oh yeah, everywhere, man. But
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: I was trying to get my boys to sneak up
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: on them. And that noise is so like you think
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: you know right where they are. You go there and
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: then you're like.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: He's over there.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: Go over there, and you're like he's over there.
- 1:08:40Speaker 8: You just feel the noise.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Yep, he's struggling with this four wheeler again.
- 1:08:44Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, we're a When I was with my little
- 1:08:46Speaker 10: boy Matthew, there we were in a cool spot where
- 1:08:49Speaker 10: you could hear blues and roughed at the same time.
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: Yeah, we had, and I was like, it's like, no,
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: he's doing that with his wings. Yep, he's doing that
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: with his mouth.
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:08:58Speaker 8: Yeah. I like hunt blue grosse a lot.
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: Let's do one more, Phil, Sure there was a favorite
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: summer lure for large mouth It's from Bradley.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: We're in Montana. That's a tough on crawl.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Yeah, favorite if the if it or top water friendly conditions.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: There is nothing more exciting and freshwater fishing than watching
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: a large mouth, uh just explode on a frog. So
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: can I give something that's my favorite?
- 1:09:24Speaker 8: I give one from nineteen eighty five. Please.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Back when I was a boy.
- 1:09:29Speaker 10: When I was a boy, the thing that we most
- 1:09:30Speaker 10: coveted in life was like you get those pre rigged
- 1:09:33Speaker 10: be a purple crawler, well the orange spot and the
- 1:09:36Speaker 10: three hooks, the three hooks on it, and it had
- 1:09:39Speaker 10: a snelled loot like you know, and you'd see them
- 1:09:43Speaker 10: in the bait shop for like seventy nine cents.
- 1:09:45Speaker 8: Dude, that was the lure.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: That was the lure man we called you must still
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: make a crawlers, you go. So Bradley favorite again would
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: be something anything top water. But if you just want
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: to catch bass, throw a spinner bait or a that's
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: like fil Like Steve said, all right, that's the end
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: of this show. Next week, The Meat Eater Movie Club
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: returns with hundreds of beavers. You can stream it on twov,
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: Pluto TV, Amazon Prime, Free V, YouTube TV, and Sling TV.
