Latest / Foul Territory / Tigers offseason to-do list: Skubal situation, Will Detroit spend?
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: I think it, but turning before we know it. It
- 0:07Speaker 1: is time to talk the Detroit Tigers. Cody Stavenhagen on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the show with us today. You can of course see
- 0:13Speaker 1: him all over the place. He writes for The Athletic.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's the co host of Tiger Territory. Cody, thanks for
- 0:18Speaker 1: being with us. We appreciate it. What are the top
- 0:19Speaker 1: three things that the Tigers need to do this offseason?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Well, yeah, thanks for having me on. First of all,
- 0:27Speaker 2: I think you can pretty easily narrow the Tigers offseason
- 0:31Speaker 2: to do list down into three categories. Probably the most
- 0:34Speaker 2: obvious is to fix the bullpen. It was a weakness
- 0:38Speaker 2: at many points last year, and more specifically, to add
- 0:41Speaker 2: more swing and miss to the bullpen so that you're
- 0:43Speaker 2: not living and dying by batting average and balls and play.
- 0:47Speaker 2: The Tigers bullpen rank twenty ninth in withfth rate last year,
- 0:50Speaker 2: which is unacceptable if you're trying to win a World Series.
- 0:54Speaker 2: They need multiple relievers. They I think need at least
- 0:57Speaker 2: one legit back in swing and miss type relief. I
- 1:00Speaker 2: don't I'd be highly surprised if they would spend one
- 1:04Speaker 2: an Edwin Diaz or a Devin Williams, but the tier
- 1:07Speaker 2: guys right below that, Pete Fairbanks, some other names in
- 1:10Speaker 2: that group makes sense, and again they're gonna have to
- 1:12Speaker 2: get more than one. Right now, will vest and Tyler
- 1:14Speaker 2: Holton might be or only sure sure things in the bullpen,
- 1:17Speaker 2: although you do have some other existing guys who have
- 1:20Speaker 2: had success, but you got a lot of work to
- 1:22Speaker 2: do in the pin. Number two, you have to add
- 1:25Speaker 2: a starter. The Tigers. For now, we're just gonna assume
- 1:28Speaker 2: they're gonna keep trek scuble and not trade them for
- 1:31Speaker 2: the purpose of this exercise. They're okay. They're in okay
- 1:34Speaker 2: shape in the pit or in the rotation. Schooble, Casey,
- 1:37Speaker 2: miz Jack Flaherty, Ree Sultan, and Troy Melton, with Cater
- 1:41Speaker 2: Montero some other guys in that mix. But they use
- 1:44Speaker 2: I think fifteen different starting pitchers last year, including bullpen days.
- 1:48Speaker 2: We all know you need more depth. I think they
- 1:50Speaker 2: have to get at least one legit starter on a
- 1:52Speaker 2: major league deal, and I would argue maybe they should
- 1:55Speaker 2: target someone who can pitch almost as a number two
- 1:57Speaker 2: to Schooble, because they're not just building for twenty twenty six.
- 2:01Speaker 2: You're building for the future. After twenty twenty six, you
- 2:05Speaker 2: are likely to lose Trek Skouble, Jack Flaherty, and Casey
- 2:07Speaker 2: miz All to free agency, so maybe you could almost
- 2:10Speaker 2: work ahead now. One thing I want to note on
- 2:13Speaker 2: both of those topics with the pitching the Tigers, as
- 2:16Speaker 2: much as it's fun to link them to names like
- 2:18Speaker 2: Michael King or whoever else, we know they like to
- 2:21Speaker 2: get creative. So I do wonder or just food for thought,
- 2:24Speaker 2: might they be looking around the edges is they're a
- 2:27Speaker 2: reliever they think they could convert to a starter, or
- 2:30Speaker 2: a starter they could convert to a reliever. I would
- 2:33Speaker 2: not rule out them doing something more outside of the box.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That conventional wisdom, you know, isn't bringing to the top
- 2:40Speaker 2: of all our minds. And then the third thing is
- 2:42Speaker 2: to improve the offense. For what it's worth, the Tigers
- 2:45Speaker 2: ranked eleventh and run scoring last year. They did that
- 2:48Speaker 2: with a really young lineup I think the fourth most
- 2:51Speaker 2: played appearances of hitters twenty five or younger. But they're
- 2:57Speaker 2: awful September and in the playoffs some of their flaws
- 3:00Speaker 2: really showed up. There can still be too much swing
- 3:02Speaker 2: and miss, a little too much chase. I think a
- 3:04Speaker 2: lot of what happens with this lineup will revolve around
- 3:08Speaker 2: what glaber Torres does. This afternoon. We will learn whether
- 3:11Speaker 2: he accepts or declines the qualifying offer. If he accepts it,
- 3:15Speaker 2: that'll be good for their lineup. He's a dependable professional hitter.
- 3:19Speaker 2: But you do wonder how they will configure the rest
- 3:21Speaker 2: of their infield, especially with a lot of existing young
- 3:25Speaker 2: players in place, especially with Kevin McGonagall arguably the top
- 3:28Speaker 2: prospect in baseball, and some other guys won the rise.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think they need more, but there's not a beyond
- 3:34Speaker 2: glaber Torres. There's not a clear solution, like a clear fit.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You know.
- 3:39Speaker 2: They could go after the Alex Bregman's. The Bobaschets in
- 3:41Speaker 2: the world makes a lot of sense, but they'll have
- 3:43Speaker 2: to do some other shuffling and again, for better or worse,
- 3:46Speaker 2: the Tigers tend to be creative, so I'm really interested
- 3:48Speaker 2: to see what kind of solutions they will ultimately land on.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Talked about the bullpen needing more swing and miss. Is
- 3:55Speaker 3: there any of those guys besides the two that un
- 3:57Speaker 3: mentioned that change maybe their pitch mix, the repertoire, because
- 4:03Speaker 3: you're not gonna find six guys that have swing and
- 4:07Speaker 3: miss that just are out there available and the Tigers
- 4:10Speaker 3: aren't willing to spend that much money. So are there
- 4:14Speaker 3: guys that they've said, hey, you know what, we can
- 4:15Speaker 3: increase this to increase that swing and miss. Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Always a good question, and generally something that Tigers been
- 4:23Speaker 2: pretty good at is helping guys tweak their arsenals optimize
- 4:26Speaker 2: their pitch mix. Kyle Finigan, who they traded for last year,
- 4:29Speaker 2: is the perfect example. He's a free agent again, but
- 4:32Speaker 2: I think there could be some mutual interest in bringing
- 4:34Speaker 2: him back, and they didn't acquire him necessarily. He was
- 4:38Speaker 2: a good reliever, a good closer, but he wasn't a
- 4:40Speaker 2: huge swing and miss guy. He got to Detroit almost
- 4:43Speaker 2: doubled the usage of his splitter and the swing and
- 4:45Speaker 2: miss went way up. So that's a Finnegan's a prime example,
- 4:49Speaker 2: and I think that's a reason he would like to
- 4:52Speaker 2: maybe return to Detroit, and maybe they would like to
- 4:54Speaker 2: have him back because they already made that sort of adjustment.
- 4:58Speaker 2: There's certainly more guys in turn, but you look at
- 5:02Speaker 2: some of the major names, they're bullpen like Brendan Hanafy.
- 5:05Speaker 2: He's more of a sinker ground ball type guy. Brent Herder,
- 5:08Speaker 2: he can miss some bats with a slider. You know,
- 5:10Speaker 2: he's a lefty, but still more of a ground ball
- 5:13Speaker 2: type guy. So I don't know that you can completely
- 5:15Speaker 2: change the profiles of some of your existing players in house.
- 5:20Speaker 2: That's why it's certainly going to take multiple external additions.
- 5:24Speaker 2: While yeah, I guess you get you're hoping, hey, throw
- 5:27Speaker 2: the slider, throw the slider a little harder, and maybe
- 5:29Speaker 2: you can get a little more swing and miss. So
- 5:31Speaker 2: at least you're not ranking twenty ninth. Cody.
- 5:35Speaker 1: What would it take to trade Trek Scooble? What do
- 5:39Speaker 1: you have to get in return?
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, obviously it's one of the biggest questions
- 5:43Speaker 2: of the whole offseason. I think it would take a
- 5:46Speaker 2: real haul. You know, I think you're tacking multiple major
- 5:49Speaker 2: league ready players top one hundred prospects, if not greater
- 5:52Speaker 2: than that. It's hard to see a world where it's
- 5:56Speaker 2: not at least a three player package, and all three
- 5:58Speaker 2: of those players are going to have to be pretty good.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I think you would like some major league ready pitching,
- 6:04Speaker 2: starting pitching, and maybe some up to middle athletes. For
- 6:08Speaker 2: as much as we look around in free agency, at
- 6:11Speaker 2: third basement. Stuff like that, shortstop and center field seem
- 6:14Speaker 2: to be some areas the Tigers could stand to improve.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Maybe it'd be easier to do that on the trade
- 6:19Speaker 2: market than free agency, But I don't know that you
- 6:23Speaker 2: can just snap your finger and come up with an
- 6:25Speaker 2: offer that makes sense. It would It would really have
- 6:27Speaker 2: to be a pretty mind blowing offer. I think for
- 6:29Speaker 2: the Tigers to do this doesn't mean they won't, doesn't
- 6:32Speaker 2: mean they're not listening, because they certainly have not shut
- 6:35Speaker 2: down this talk. Scott Harris, Jeff Greenberg when they've been
- 6:38Speaker 2: asked about it, they've basically said no comment, which to
- 6:41Speaker 2: me says, hey're they're open to listen, listen to offers,
- 6:46Speaker 2: but they don't have to trade them. So I think
- 6:47Speaker 2: it would take something that they really would have to
- 6:49Speaker 2: feel strongly is worth it, both in the short term
- 6:52Speaker 2: and the long term.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Holiday shopping season is here and we have you covered
- 6:59Speaker 4: from to toe.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Let's take to talk about an area that's not quite
- 7:04Speaker 3: close to the toes. Let's get crazy with this holiday season.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Yeah that's me undies. I'm spinning around. But the holiday season.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Now you can get me undies with some holiday prints

- 7:45Speaker 4: E U N d I e s dot com slash
- 7:49Speaker 4: f o U L promo code foul for up to
- 7:52Speaker 4: fifty percent off.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Cody, I was gonna say, what you missed on that
- 7:58Speaker 5: off season to do list was signed Trek School, right,
- 8:02Speaker 5: I mean, that's it. And I joked with Scott Harris
- 8:04Speaker 5: when we were in Seattle together, like and Terrek walked by,
- 8:07Speaker 5: and I go, Scott, when are we announcing this extension here?
- 8:10Speaker 5: And Scott, you know, Scott Harris looked at me like
- 8:12Speaker 5: I was crazy because I sent in front of Tarek.
- 8:14Speaker 5: But you know that's me. Whatever. Anyways, so I thought
- 8:17Speaker 5: it was funny. Hinch was there too. He laughed. Everyone
- 8:19Speaker 5: kind of had a good chuckle about it. And I
- 8:21Speaker 5: think Trek said something like, we'll have Scott call my
- 8:23Speaker 5: Scott and we'll figure it out. But I don't think
- 8:25Speaker 5: that's gonna happen. It's not that simple. But you mentioned
- 8:28Speaker 5: offense at the end, right, And I watched them play
- 8:33Speaker 5: five games. I watched them play more than five games, obviously,
- 8:35Speaker 5: but the five games against the Mariners, it was swinging, miss,
- 8:38Speaker 5: swinging miss, swinging miss, strikeouts, strikeouts, strikeout. And I love
- 8:42Speaker 5: I love Riley Green. I think Riley Green could be
- 8:45Speaker 5: one of the best hitters in all of baseball if
- 8:48Speaker 5: he just cut down his strikeouts. Will he change in
- 8:52Speaker 5: order to do that? Because I've talked to some people
- 8:54Speaker 5: in baseball that say, this guy could be a three
- 8:57Speaker 5: four hundred million dollar guy, or if he could and
- 9:00Speaker 5: he's on the path he is, he'll be a hundred
- 9:02Speaker 5: which listen, one hundred million dollars is a crazy amount
- 9:04Speaker 5: of money, you know, one hundred to two hundred million
- 9:06Speaker 5: dollar guy if he stays where he's at. So do
- 9:09Speaker 5: you think they can talk him into changing and just
- 9:12Speaker 5: cutting down on the strikeouts? Just I mean, just to
- 9:15Speaker 5: go from two hundred strikeouts to one hundred and fifty
- 9:18Speaker 5: strikeouts and put the ball in play in situations.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's certainly attainable. Like when he was
- 9:25Speaker 2: coming up as a really highly touted prospect, I never
- 9:28Speaker 2: viewed him as a guy who's going to strike out
- 9:30Speaker 2: two hundred times. Now, around the time he got to
- 9:33Speaker 2: double a, myself and some mothers kind of start noticing, like,
- 9:36Speaker 2: this guy does swing and miss a little more than
- 9:38Speaker 2: maybe we've talked about. So it started to show up.
- 9:41Speaker 2: But he was viewed as like a very pure hitter,
- 9:44Speaker 2: a very natural hitter, a line drive, all fields type hitter.
- 9:48Speaker 2: And the big question was, like, how's the power going
- 9:51Speaker 2: to develop? Is this a twenty homer guy, a thirty
- 9:53Speaker 2: homer guy, a thirty plus homer guy, and you look
- 9:56Speaker 2: up at age twenty four, he hit thirty six home runs,
- 10:00Speaker 2: But I think it's fair to say there was a
- 10:01Speaker 2: little bit too much selling out for power. It led
- 10:04Speaker 2: to a franchise record for strikeouts. Yeah, he got the
- 10:08Speaker 2: home runs, but some other parts of his game really suffered.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Playing the game moving the ball forward huge issue. I
- 10:14Speaker 2: think he's a good enough and adaptable enough hitter to
- 10:17Speaker 2: no that's not gonna fly. His first couple of years
- 10:19Speaker 2: in the majors, he was hitting the ball on the
- 10:21Speaker 2: ground too much. He adapted, started hitting the ball in
- 10:23Speaker 2: the air, tapped into his power again. It seems now
- 10:26Speaker 2: fair to say that was probably an over correction. Something's
- 10:30Speaker 2: going to have to change. And Shirley Riley knows that.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I was gonna ask you about Kevin mcgonagal. Yes, he
- 10:37Speaker 3: is maybe number two. I think he's ranked number two
- 10:39Speaker 3: or number three prospect in all of baseball. They're number
- 10:41Speaker 3: one prospect. Is this team able to bring up Kevin
- 10:47Speaker 3: mcgonagal to the big leagues and at the same time
- 10:50Speaker 3: say we think our team is getting better and we're
- 10:54Speaker 3: gonna win a World Series Because normally it's you either
- 10:58Speaker 3: keep all your stars and get more. We talked a
- 11:00Speaker 3: lot about free agency and if it doesn't go well,
- 11:03Speaker 3: then we call up our prospects.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the whole I don't know if
- 11:10Speaker 2: it's the problem, but it's the difficulty of trying to
- 11:12Speaker 2: thread the needle and build the sustainable winner, right because
- 11:16Speaker 2: you get these young prospects and you got to get
- 11:18Speaker 2: him to the big leagues at some point. But we
- 11:20Speaker 2: all know, young players are prone to struggles. Wasn't that
- 11:23Speaker 2: long ago. Colt Keith was not quite Kevin McGonagall level,
- 11:26Speaker 2: but he was a very highly touted prospect and he
- 11:29Speaker 2: really struggled for the first eighty ish games of his
- 11:33Speaker 2: major league career. Got a little better, but probably still
- 11:36Speaker 2: hasn't hit what he eventually might be. McGonagall, this guy's
- 11:41Speaker 2: really good. I would not be surprised if he has
- 11:43Speaker 2: success pretty early on. But is he going to be
- 11:46Speaker 2: as good as Bob Baschett is from day one? I
- 11:48Speaker 2: mean that's a hard sell, right, It's probably going to
- 11:51Speaker 2: take a couple of years, so I don't know. It's
- 11:54Speaker 2: why it's really difficult. I think mcgonagall's legit. I think
- 11:57Speaker 2: it helps. He can play second, he can play third,
- 11:59Speaker 2: he can play some short I'm not sure he's an
- 12:01Speaker 2: everyday shortstop though, and so that that's part of the
- 12:05Speaker 2: equation that makes it a little bit harder.
- 12:11Speaker 5: All right, Cody mcgonagall's a super prospect. They have Max
- 12:15Speaker 5: Clark who is coming also. I love what the Tigers
- 12:18Speaker 5: do with Cole Keith. They're not afraid because they're in
- 12:20Speaker 5: the central winnable Division that they can still do this.
- 12:23Speaker 5: What I want to know though, is Scott Harris. Okay,
- 12:25Speaker 5: Scott Harris is the GM's he's been in charge for
- 12:28Speaker 5: a few years now. What's his role. Can he go
- 12:32Speaker 5: to Christopher Illich and say, mister Ilich, I need more money,
- 12:36Speaker 5: I need ten million and we can get Bragman ambushit
- 12:39Speaker 5: and have McGonagall or is he not have that power
- 12:42Speaker 5: because he's a young guy. He came from the Cubs.
- 12:44Speaker 5: The Cubs are a big market, even though sometimes they
- 12:46Speaker 5: don't act like it, right, So does he learn to
- 12:48Speaker 5: be stingy or will he Does he have the ability
- 12:51Speaker 5: to go to Christopher re Lilich and say I need
- 12:53Speaker 5: this much more money and we can get past Seattle
- 12:55Speaker 5: and maybe go to the World Series.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know exactly how those conversations go down,
- 13:02Speaker 2: but oddly enough, for as much as Chrisilich isn't his
- 13:05Speaker 2: father and isn't known as a big spender, it seems
- 13:08Speaker 2: like he's always been willing to open the pocket books
- 13:11Speaker 2: to like a reasonable level. Like people who complain about
- 13:14Speaker 2: the Tigers being cheap. It wasn't that long ago they
- 13:17Speaker 2: signed Hobby Bias, and they signed Eduardo Rodriguez, and they
- 13:19Speaker 2: spent pretty big in the twenty twenty two off season. Now,
- 13:25Speaker 2: I do wonder if Chris Hilich hired Scott Harris in
- 13:27Speaker 2: part because there was some alignment that they didn't have
- 13:30Speaker 2: to be a luxury tax team, that they didn't have
- 13:33Speaker 2: to be the Mike Ilitch Tigers. Yeah, Scott Harris, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: he came up under theo Epstein, but then he worked
- 13:39Speaker 2: for far hands ied in San Francisco. It doesn't seem
- 13:43Speaker 2: so far like free agency, like spending is necessarily how
- 13:47Speaker 2: he views, you know, the best way to build a
- 13:50Speaker 2: baseball team. This is a guy who likes the waiver wire,
- 13:53Speaker 2: and I think that the challenge of finding surplus value
- 13:56Speaker 2: and winning on the margins and all those kind of buzzwords.
- 13:59Speaker 2: But to some degree has been pretty good at it.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So maybe the answer is somewhere in the middle. I
- 14:05Speaker 2: think this offseason can be a test though, for Chris Ilich,
- 14:08Speaker 2: how hands on do you want to be? How much
- 14:09Speaker 2: do you want to spend? And then Scott Harris, He's
- 14:12Speaker 2: done a really good job at a lot of the
- 14:14Speaker 2: finer aspects of building an organization, but putting the finishing
- 14:18Speaker 2: touches on the major league roster I've always viewed that
- 14:21Speaker 2: as the hardest thing to do, and sometimes that means
- 14:24Speaker 2: that that means you got to spend.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I think, Cody, why doesn't Chris spend like Mike.
- 14:33Speaker 2: I think it's also important to remember Mike Ilich spent
- 14:36Speaker 2: big for what less than ten years toward the end
- 14:40Speaker 2: of his life. He wanted to win a World Series.
- 14:43Speaker 2: But Mike Elich owned the Tigers in the nineties and
- 14:45Speaker 2: they didn't really act like that. And in the early
- 14:47Speaker 2: two thousands maybe to some degree when they signed Pad Rodriguez,
- 14:51Speaker 2: that was a huge deal, but it wasn't really until
- 14:54Speaker 2: later in his life and his ownership with the Tigers
- 14:56Speaker 2: that he spent at that level of aggression. So it
- 15:01Speaker 2: was abnormal and it wasn't his entire ownership. Chrisilich clearly
- 15:06Speaker 2: just doesn't view things the same way his dad did
- 15:08Speaker 2: toward the ends. Towards the end.
- 15:10Speaker 5: There, Yeah, that's when they started winning, is when they
- 15:13Speaker 5: signed Pudge and they signed Maglio and they had justin Verland,
- 15:16Speaker 5: and they brought Kenny Rogers back, and they went got
- 15:19Speaker 5: carlos Ki in, and they went and got plus Atoplongo,
- 15:22Speaker 5: and they went and got all these guys Max Scherzer
- 15:24Speaker 5: and Porcelo and David Price, and that's when the Tigers
- 15:27Speaker 5: were good. Maybe they should look in the mirror and
- 15:30Speaker 5: be like, we were good and starting six, because four
- 15:34Speaker 5: they were four. They were very good when they got
- 15:36Speaker 5: Pudgo five. But then six when they all started coming together,
- 15:40Speaker 5: that's when they went to the World Series. And then
- 15:42Speaker 5: obviously they had that great run in the twenty tennis.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Trust me, I played against all those guys. They went
- 15:46Speaker 5: to god making Cabrera paid him. They went got Dontro
- 15:49Speaker 5: and they paid him, even though he didn't work out right.
- 15:52Speaker 5: But they did these things and that was how they won.
- 15:55Speaker 5: And Camerica can be awesome. I've seen it. And thank
- 15:58Speaker 5: god they got a new well they didn't get a
- 15:59Speaker 5: new score. They move the scoreboards. You can now actually
- 16:01Speaker 5: see it. So they've done some good things there.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, they did all that, and they got to the
- 16:08Speaker 2: World Series twice and they didn't win it. And so unfortunately,
- 16:12Speaker 2: I think that is like ammunition for the newer class
- 16:16Speaker 2: executives who would say, why should we do all that
- 16:19Speaker 2: and then having to risk tear it down where we
- 16:21Speaker 2: could operate like this and make the playoffs and back
- 16:24Speaker 2: to back years and think that we're going to continue
- 16:27Speaker 2: to get better now. Obviously there are a million cautionary
- 16:30Speaker 2: tales of examples that didn't quite work out. The Orioles
- 16:33Speaker 2: last yearn even the Cubs who did win a World Series.
- 16:36Speaker 2: They thought they had the makings of a dynasty and
- 16:38Speaker 2: that thing fell apart pretty quickly. And that wasn't necessarily
- 16:42Speaker 2: that they were you know, they were willing to spend
- 16:44Speaker 2: in Chicago too. But I think that's one of the
- 16:46Speaker 2: more fascinating, like philosophical debates, because everyone wants to spin, spin, spin,
- 16:51Speaker 2: and I think they're like, I think they were taught.
- 16:54Speaker 2: The Tigers are at a point where they need to
- 16:56Speaker 2: get serious about spending a little bit more. But I
- 17:00Speaker 2: don't know, you can spind your heart out and sometimes
- 17:02Speaker 2: it still doesn't work.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Yeah, look at the Mets.
