- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, Bill Krachenberger here, special show. Here, We're gonna
- 0:04Speaker 1: try to do it. See if we can get it
- 0:05Speaker 1: in every like maybe every other week if all has
- 0:07Speaker 1: time or uh he's running around making money and everything
- 0:12Speaker 1: in life.
- 0:12Speaker 2: So oh yeah, I'm not a real fucking success. Yeah no,
- 0:16Speaker 2: but I.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Think that, Uh, there's many advantages that people don't know
- 0:21Speaker 1: that we have in life, and sometimes it's just right
- 0:26Speaker 1: there in front of you sometimes, and people are sometimes
- 0:29Speaker 1: afraid to.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Take advantage of that. Alan to be honest with you,
- 0:32Speaker 3: what I'm trying to say is we we have we
- 0:35Speaker 3: have had.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I have had opportunities in my life that I'm uh,
- 0:38Speaker 1: they're just a little bit above my head sometimes. So you yourself, though,
- 0:43Speaker 1: you will take that advantage and uh, you'll play it like.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Let's you know, we play.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Some advantage machines, not throwing basketball, but you'll actually take
- 0:52Speaker 1: that chance because it's such a mathematical good bet that
- 0:55Speaker 1: you'll you'll you'll take that chance in life where maybe
- 0:58Speaker 1: I would call partners in, but you do too.
- 1:00Speaker 3: You have guys that you went partners on machines.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Am I right, yeah, but only because I didn't want
- 1:06Speaker 2: to risk going broke.
- 1:07Speaker 4: During the thing, I don't mind going broke, like, Okay,
- 1:09Speaker 4: a part of me, a part of me has to
- 1:11Speaker 4: be broke, like there's a part of my body that's
- 1:13Speaker 4: more comfortable being broke than being rich.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So don't keep me wrong.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I prefer the rich part, but only because it allows
- 1:20Speaker 4: for independence and it allows for you to help your
- 1:24Speaker 4: family and friends out when they call. Uh.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Now, you're just you know, getting by.
- 1:29Speaker 1: But one of the greatest lines Alan Boston ever told
- 1:32Speaker 1: me was crack. I've loaned myself broke, so he's and
- 1:36Speaker 1: it's not even loane.
- 1:37Speaker 2: It's gifts.
- 1:38Speaker 1: You gift people stuff you know you're not getting it back,
- 1:40Speaker 1: so and to hit on that. Let me just tell
- 1:43Speaker 1: you how this happened around twenty well, it's almost thirty
- 1:48Speaker 1: years now. I wasn't even doing any kind of media.
- 1:51Speaker 1: It's social media that just came out. Alan, I don't
- 1:54Speaker 1: even know the answer to this. I'm sitting in my
- 1:57Speaker 1: house in New Jersey, in my office in my house.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Just started being a professional sports better, just quit my
- 2:03Speaker 1: job and made it full time sports betting.
- 2:05Speaker 3: And I hear Alan Boston on a show or radio show.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I don't think there was podcast back then. It's around
- 2:11Speaker 3: nineteen ninety eight. What would you have been on back then?
- 2:13Speaker 2: Were you on Audust line? Sunday Night?
- 2:15Speaker 3: That's it.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I was a regular on the Sunday Night Starts line,
- 2:18Speaker 4: which was the original, maybe not the original. Lea peaked
- 2:22Speaker 4: at a show, but I don't think it was from
- 2:24Speaker 4: the Starters, but it was almost like a continuation of
- 2:26Speaker 4: the Lefty Rosenthal show that he did back in the
- 2:30Speaker 4: seventies and eighties.
- 2:30Speaker 2: There's a lot of history to it.
- 2:32Speaker 4: It's Arnie Lang continued it, and he was the first
- 2:35Speaker 4: person to have me on back in eighty nine.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I want to say wow.
- 2:39Speaker 4: And then John Kelly continued the Starters line and one
- 2:42Speaker 4: night he was and I normally didn't listen to it,
- 2:46Speaker 4: but I was driving home from the Strip on a
- 2:48Speaker 4: Sunday night. It was probably a light college basketball night,
- 2:51Speaker 4: and I had to make an overnight bet or something,
- 2:53Speaker 4: and he said, if Alan Boss is out here, we'd
- 2:57Speaker 4: love to have you on. And I happen to hear it,
- 2:59Speaker 4: and I said, yeah, I think I'm banned from the Starter.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I speak because I made fun of the I made
- 3:06Speaker 4: fun of the.
- 3:08Speaker 2: President of the company.
- 3:10Speaker 4: This is the way back when they fired Scotti Schutler
- 3:13Speaker 4: and brought some corporate fucking to run it who would
- 3:16Speaker 4: do it his way. Even though Scotty Schutler was the
- 3:20Speaker 4: most successful and innovative creative bookmaker of our time, I
- 3:24Speaker 4: love him and and and made a place that smelt
- 3:30Speaker 4: like someone took a piss all over it into an
- 3:33Speaker 4: epic mandatory place for all gamblers to be where he
- 3:38Speaker 4: opened the line first and took a bet and anyone
- 3:41Speaker 4: could bet the same amount, no matter who they were,
- 3:44Speaker 4: And he moved his line like he understood it's.
- 3:47Speaker 2: All about markets and he could open the line.
- 3:51Speaker 4: I told him one day, I think you could open
- 3:53Speaker 4: every line pick randomly, opened every game pick, and you'd
- 3:56Speaker 4: figure out how to make.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Money to it.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Now, granted you're gonna lose when the game should be
- 4:00Speaker 4: and you opened it picked, but they knew how to
- 4:03Speaker 4: move lines appropriately based on who made the bet to
- 4:08Speaker 4: get to the proper market where they'd wright two way business.
- 4:10Speaker 4: And back then there was a lot of two way
- 4:13Speaker 4: business because everyone opened their own line.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So there were middlers who.
- 4:17Speaker 4: If the starters went from three to four and a
- 4:19Speaker 4: half on a game, uh, they might even be a
- 4:21Speaker 4: two and a half a round and and so they
- 4:23Speaker 4: they immediately got a buy back and it was it
- 4:27Speaker 4: was just a.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Different world and a better world.
- 4:30Speaker 4: But but but Scotty was wildly successful at a place
- 4:33Speaker 4: that was an absolute dump and uh and and was
- 4:37Speaker 4: the go to place like this new casino springing up everywhere.
- 4:39Speaker 4: But everyone congregated the starters. So they got rid of
- 4:42Speaker 4: him because he uh wasn't.
- 4:44Speaker 2: A corporate guy.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Alan let me ask you, and.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I I I made, I made, I made. Uh. It
- 4:51Speaker 2: was stan Roth, That's who it was.
- 4:52Speaker 4: He came over from Samstown, and I I had, uh
- 4:57Speaker 4: Steve Richmond, the very famous Steve Richmond who's no longer
- 5:01Speaker 4: with us, UH make make T shirts up with a
- 5:05Speaker 4: stop sign that said stop Stanstown, stan Roth, bring back Scotty.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So he was from Stamstown.
- 5:12Speaker 4: So I said, stop Stanstown, bring back Scotty, and I
- 5:15Speaker 4: distributed him at the startist stan Roth wasn't very appreciative
- 5:19Speaker 4: of this, even though it's you know, First Amendment. And
- 5:22Speaker 4: he had me eighty six, So in spite of my
- 5:25Speaker 4: being eighty six, they had me on a Sunday night
- 5:26Speaker 4: Starters line every week. Anyway, that's kind of a long
- 5:28Speaker 4: witted history for uh, yeah, for any of you history
- 5:31Speaker 4: buffs out there.
- 5:32Speaker 3: So you did start us line from your house then?
- 5:35Speaker 4: Not?
- 5:35Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I went to the starters where I was eighty six.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, well were allowed to bet?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Are you allowed to bet there?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:46Speaker 4: I went and talked to uh Joe Lupo and uh
- 5:50Speaker 4: and uh uh he was the boss. He became a
- 5:53Speaker 4: big wig at Bagatta And you know I told him,
- 5:56Speaker 4: I said, when he got the job at Bagotter, I said,
- 5:57Speaker 4: see what happens when you suck c Corport dick for
- 5:59Speaker 4: twenty years, you got a good run.
- 6:02Speaker 2: How about now that.
- 6:05Speaker 3: He's making seven figures a year.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Now now he's the head of our brand new hard
- 6:12Speaker 1: rock here in town.
- 6:13Speaker 3: He is the boss of that place and.
- 6:15Speaker 2: He has paid.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Yeah, he's the boss. No one's hired, No.
- 6:19Speaker 2: One's that's the new Mirage, the old Mirage Morage.
- 6:22Speaker 3: They're building the guitar tower. Now here's the guy that
- 6:25Speaker 3: running it. Sportsbook guy who went and ran. Uh.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He went to the Brigata under Bob Bobner wind up,
- 6:31Speaker 1: you know, being a tutor. He was really tutored there
- 6:35Speaker 1: and went to the He was the head of many
- 6:37Speaker 1: casinos in Florida. He was the head of hard rock
- 6:40Speaker 1: in Atlantic City. Now he's the head of hard rock here.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I can't wait for it to open. We need that competition.
- 6:46Speaker 1: They're gonna get all the business. If they do it right,
- 6:49Speaker 1: they're gonna get all the business.
- 6:50Speaker 4: They're goneah he uh he. He has the right roots
- 6:54Speaker 4: to do it right. But he's still a corporate guy
- 6:57Speaker 4: at heart.
- 6:57Speaker 3: So definitely I tried to so anything.
- 7:01Speaker 4: He does will likely be an improvement over what's out there,
- 7:03Speaker 4: because that play Vegas is an absolute shithole, and and
- 7:07Speaker 4: it used to be the only place for people at
- 7:09Speaker 4: that Now it's like a place to avoid.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It's all.
- 7:12Speaker 1: It's my question before, say, Alan, back then when you
- 7:15Speaker 1: came to town by the way year, what year did
- 7:17Speaker 1: you actually come to town to visit?
- 7:18Speaker 3: And then what year did you move here?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Eighty three is when I first visited, uh, and and
- 7:24Speaker 4: just to see how here's how things have changed.
- 7:26Speaker 2: So in eighty three I came here and and eighty
- 7:29Speaker 2: four was.
- 7:30Speaker 4: The second year I was here, and I ran into
- 7:32Speaker 4: a friend, Oscar Thomas, who I had met in New
- 7:35Speaker 4: York and he was now in Vegas, and uh, I
- 7:39Speaker 4: think it was Danny Dotson. They had all these old
- 7:42Speaker 4: school handicappers who you know, we all did it winging it.
- 7:46Speaker 4: There was no internet, there was no information you could
- 7:48Speaker 4: really get a score on games. And he liked Dartmouth
- 7:53Speaker 4: plus four against holy Cross, so well, holy Cross was
- 7:58Speaker 4: four against Dartber. I think it was holy Cross actually,
- 8:01Speaker 4: So Caesars had four and a half, so we went
- 8:03Speaker 4: and bet. They took a dime, so we had five
- 8:05Speaker 4: hundred each on the game, which was a lot for me.
- 8:09Speaker 2: The game closed the side we bet won, so it
- 8:13Speaker 2: moved a lot.
- 8:15Speaker 4: But when you looked at the opening line sheet at
- 8:17Speaker 4: the starters, they opened at fifteen, I'll.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Think about that.
- 8:21Speaker 4: They opened a game fifteen that we're taking four on
- 8:24Speaker 4: closing the other side one.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So the game moved sixteen points off the opener. That's how.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Much easier it was in the eighties to win that
- 8:32Speaker 4: some banged out line you're still stealing.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Caesars was up that much earlier. For no, this was
- 8:38Speaker 3: late in the day.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Starters had opened at fifteen, they had it four.
- 8:42Speaker 4: We walked over to Caesars they had four and a half,
- 8:45Speaker 4: so we bet it there obviously, and the game closed
- 8:48Speaker 4: the other side one. All right, no starters was first up,
- 8:51Speaker 4: and they probably took real small limits in that game.
- 8:53Speaker 4: It was you know, Holy crossed off with like I
- 8:55Speaker 4: didn't even know that was a I'm surprised they booked
- 8:59Speaker 4: totly cross back then. But but there were X number
- 9:03Speaker 4: of conferences they booked, and that was one of them.
- 9:07Speaker 4: The point being is is the game moves eleven points
- 9:09Speaker 4: and it's still a big bet for this guy right game,
- 9:12Speaker 4: and then it moves five more that doesn't exist anymore,
- 9:15Speaker 4: and as in spite of that, the starter still won
- 9:18Speaker 4: to circle back to the point before they could still
- 9:20Speaker 4: win even though they opened a bad line.
- 9:23Speaker 1: That was gonna be my question, Alan, back then, compared
- 9:27Speaker 1: to now, how much more could you get on the game?
- 9:31Speaker 1: You know, I was it just it's amazing how hard
- 9:33Speaker 1: it is to get down on college basketball now compared
- 9:36Speaker 1: to back then. You could probably you know when even
- 9:38Speaker 1: in the nineties or whatever, you could probably bet. I
- 9:41Speaker 1: don't know, you're gonna tell me how many you were
- 9:43Speaker 1: part of you were the syndicate, But how much was
- 9:46Speaker 1: your group now?
- 9:47Speaker 4: I was never a syneicate. It was me and my
- 9:49Speaker 4: partner and we did everything on our own. But we
- 9:52Speaker 4: if we called out all our resources. Uh and uh,
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'll say late ninety really two thousands. I could get
- 10:01Speaker 4: two hundred thousand on a basketball game college basketball.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Unbelievable.
- 10:05Speaker 4: It need me and I know that to be true
- 10:07Speaker 4: because I I I went crazy one day because they
- 10:11Speaker 4: opened a I really wanted to bet a game, but
- 10:13Speaker 4: I wanted a certain price, so I just started screwing
- 10:16Speaker 4: around with it on the screen.
- 10:17Speaker 2: This is a true story.
- 10:18Speaker 4: So I bet seventy two thousand on the side. I
- 10:20Speaker 4: didn't like, Okay, how many two thousand? Now, I wasn't
- 10:25Speaker 4: that big or better, like, you know, I like the gamble,
- 10:27Speaker 4: but that you know, And I got to give my
- 10:30Speaker 4: partner credit.
- 10:30Speaker 2: He was kind of a knitti guy when we first started,
- 10:33Speaker 2: but he didn't beat an eyelash.
- 10:35Speaker 4: And then I sent my buddy Oscar out. I said, see,
- 10:37Speaker 4: we can get me off screen. They had a screen
- 10:39Speaker 4: at the time, so this is probably for about two thousand, yeah,
- 10:42Speaker 4: two thousand and one. And he said, I got you
- 10:44Speaker 4: one hundred and seventeen thousand. I said, okay, thank you.
- 10:48Speaker 4: He said you need more. I said, no, that's good,
- 10:51Speaker 4: but we'll happen from here. And then we bet an
- 10:53Speaker 4: extra you know, then we bet the screen and got
- 10:56Speaker 4: another uh fifty or or or so on it sixty maybe,
- 11:00Speaker 4: but he said I could get more, and we had
- 11:02Speaker 4: bet like one hundred and seventy on the right side.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Wow you were, You were betting a lot more than
- 11:06Speaker 3: I even thought. Wow.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Well, I'm not bashful about gambling. So so I could
- 11:11Speaker 2: have got two hundred thousand easily, and I know it can't,
- 11:14Speaker 2: I know, I know, you know, mister.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Walters, God knows what he got down right, because he
- 11:18Speaker 4: would you know, he spent He had a much bigger
- 11:20Speaker 4: group than I had, and and uh and and and
- 11:24Speaker 4: needed to bet a lot more to to make it
- 11:26Speaker 4: worth his while. So I'm assuming you could get a
- 11:29Speaker 4: half a million on a game. But but you know,
- 11:30Speaker 4: he was he he was very innovative and and creative
- 11:34Speaker 4: and how he got down and uh but just on
- 11:36Speaker 4: the square two hundred thousand wouldn't was not was not impossible.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Your relation today is still fantastic with Billy, am I right?
- 11:43Speaker 2: Mister Yeah? We still still say all once in a while.
- 11:46Speaker 4: We're getting older, and you know he's uh he he
- 11:49Speaker 4: used to try to mentor me a little bit, which
- 11:51Speaker 4: was I don't think his uh I don't think it
- 11:55Speaker 4: was his norm, but I think he actually kind of
- 11:57Speaker 4: enjoyed it. I don't know he saw me. I think
- 11:58Speaker 4: he saw me a little different light than most because
- 12:02Speaker 4: the first time when he first contacted me, and I
- 12:05Speaker 4: still have to ask him this, he called me like
- 12:07Speaker 4: seven am. And I'm nobody. I'm getting like five hundred
- 12:12Speaker 4: a game for some friends.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I'm broke. I'm just a kid. I'm thirty years old, baby.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Actually no, I was like thirty thirty one, yeah, thirty
- 12:21Speaker 4: one or thirty two, thirty one, thirty two, thirty two, right,
- 12:27Speaker 4: and my friends would betting a Nicola game for me.
- 12:28Speaker 2: In college football?
- 12:30Speaker 4: And uh, I get a call Red Bill Walter's here,
- 12:34Speaker 4: huh like number one.
- 12:36Speaker 2: How the fuck did you get my phone number? And
- 12:38Speaker 2: number two? Why?
- 12:40Speaker 4: And he said, I think I got something that's good
- 12:42Speaker 4: for us. Can can we meet at the country club?
- 12:44Speaker 4: I said, mister Waldace, I'm not a country club guy.
- 12:47Speaker 4: And I had talked with him once and did not
- 12:51Speaker 4: come up with a very good feeling.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Huh.
- 12:54Speaker 4: So I wanted to make him a little uncomfortable, so
- 12:57Speaker 4: I said, let's go to Ellis Island. Now Ellis Island
- 13:01Speaker 4: at the time was a shithole bar that I used
- 13:04Speaker 4: to drink out on occasion. It's the quintessential sleazy, old
- 13:07Speaker 4: school Vegas bar. And he told me why I should
- 13:12Speaker 4: work with him, and I said, are you done?
- 13:15Speaker 2: He said yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 4: I said, well, here's why I won't because when we
- 13:20Speaker 4: first met, you were a condescending asshole and I didn't
- 13:22Speaker 4: want to have anything to do with you, and no
- 13:24Speaker 4: amount of money could could change that. Well, I appreciate
- 13:27Speaker 4: your honesty, read, but you know, maybe you can change
- 13:29Speaker 4: your mind and we'll talk. And again I refer to
- 13:33Speaker 4: my friend Oscar. Oscar told me, are you fucking crazy? Like?
- 13:37Speaker 4: At tell me you want twenty thousand a game? I said,
- 13:39Speaker 4: twenty thousand a game? What are you crazy? Like? Yeah,
- 13:42Speaker 4: you'll get it. I said, I can't ask for that much.
- 13:44Speaker 4: That's that's just ridiculous. Turns out it wasn't ridiculous. I
- 13:48Speaker 4: probably could have got it. And I said, you know what,
- 13:52Speaker 4: I'm broke and this guy is really influential and maybe
- 13:55Speaker 4: I was just wrong, which I was.
- 13:57Speaker 2: He was really good to me and has been like
- 14:00Speaker 2: throughout the entire time.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Uh.
- 14:04Speaker 4: And we met this time at the Sterling Brunch at
- 14:06Speaker 4: Valley's the original gourmet brunch. Alreo was the Natre D.
- 14:11Speaker 4: I used top them twenty dollars every.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Time, and and you know, you get treated like a king.
- 14:16Speaker 4: That was old school Vegas too, That was and then
- 14:18Speaker 4: they got rid of and they eventually fired Oreo, poor Oreo.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I want, I wonder what happened to all these old
- 14:23Speaker 2: natre d's, p O and U.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Like the like the tuxedo and the rose color glass.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Always had tuxedo, always black tie, every matre d black tie, Yes, sir, no, sir,
- 14:37Speaker 4: thank you.
- 14:38Speaker 2: That's old school Vegas.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Where you got treated with respect and and and you've
- 14:43Speaker 4: got a little more respect if you tipped them. I
- 14:45Speaker 4: will say that, but you know, money's always ruled sadly.
- 14:50Speaker 4: But we went there and I told him, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 4: I told them what I wanted. I said, like I said,
- 14:56Speaker 4: I do help people with their opening their lines, and
- 14:58Speaker 4: they pay me. So I need twelve out and all
- 15:00Speaker 4: us to live on. And I'd like up to twelve
- 15:03Speaker 4: thousand a game. And he said, what about ten? I said,
- 15:06Speaker 4: I didn't come ahead of bargain. We got a deal
- 15:08Speaker 4: read and.
- 15:09Speaker 2: That was it. Wow, you know, I think fifteen years
- 15:12Speaker 2: later I.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Was in Maine and I was having dinner with the
- 15:17Speaker 4: young lady and I said, boy, I'm kind of dreading
- 15:19Speaker 4: this football season. She said, well, they need the money.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I said no, but yes, and she said, life short.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I went home and throw out all the football work.
- 15:31Speaker 4: I called up mister Walters. He said, you're ready football read.
- 15:33Speaker 4: I said, well, I don't think I can give you
- 15:39Speaker 4: an appropriate amount of time to have you give me
- 15:42Speaker 4: what I deserve, what you've been giving me. And I
- 15:45Speaker 4: don't think it's fair to you because I'm not into it,
- 15:47Speaker 4: like I don't have the energy to give you proper effort.
- 15:51Speaker 4: And I said, so, thanks for your help over the years,
- 15:54Speaker 4: and we'll stay in touch.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And I'm done. And he said, well, thanks for being honest. Red.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Now it's because I could have got I could have
- 16:01Speaker 4: done some half assed work, sent them a list and
- 16:03Speaker 4: maybe even made money.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:05Speaker 4: But that's that's that's not that's not being forthright or honest.
- 16:09Speaker 4: And we certainly lack that in the world today, Like
- 16:13Speaker 4: you know, since our government lies to us about virtually everything. Uh,
- 16:17Speaker 4: and so does the news news reporters, and so don't
- 16:20Speaker 4: most gamblers actually like the information on sports betting is
- 16:24Speaker 4: really diseased and and and sad.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Because they're all in it for money.
- 16:28Speaker 4: They want clicks so they can refer to with sportsbook
- 16:30Speaker 4: and they make money on each click.
- 16:31Speaker 2: It's it's all fucking bullshit.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Yeah, the influencers, the TikTok Instagram.
- 16:37Speaker 4: They don't know their asshole from page one, and and
- 16:40Speaker 4: I mean some do, some have remnants of a clue.
- 16:43Speaker 4: But you know they're not contacting me because I'll actually
- 16:46Speaker 4: speak the truth like that. Yeah, you don't have that.
- 16:48Speaker 4: You can't have someone who actually knows what he's talking about.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I'm not bragging. I don't think it's some great thing
- 16:52Speaker 4: that I know what I'm doing with college basketball, but
- 16:54Speaker 4: sure I have been doing it for professionally since eighty nine,
- 16:58Speaker 4: So that's thirty six years. And I lost two of
- 17:00Speaker 4: those thirty.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Six years, right, so we had all times.
- 17:03Speaker 3: So losing years out of thirty six.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty good. Maybe you're supposed to win all
- 17:08Speaker 2: thirty six. I don't know, like maybe I'm actually not
- 17:10Speaker 2: that good.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But you know, if for anyone listening to here watching
- 17:13Speaker 1: Alan and I had a couple of seasons together with
- 17:15Speaker 1: the first season.
- 17:19Speaker 3: I swear to you, I swear to you.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We ran bad. We ran bad the end games. If
- 17:26Speaker 1: we went fifty to fifty, we would have won one
- 17:28Speaker 1: hundred units. Instead we won seventy two. I like seventy
- 17:31Speaker 1: two units.
- 17:31Speaker 2: I'm not choking.
- 17:33Speaker 5: But if we would have went fifty to fifty on
- 17:35Speaker 5: end games where we were in the game, had the
- 17:38Speaker 5: game and lost the last minute or overtime overtime underdogs
- 17:42Speaker 5: ough overtime of that year, and.
- 17:46Speaker 4: We're running about eighteen percent end games. I was charting
- 17:49Speaker 4: it for a while and it never got any better,
- 17:51Speaker 4: so I stopped.
- 17:51Speaker 2: It was like so fucking aggravating. It's just so so
- 17:54Speaker 2: it work was really good, Yeah, I was. I was.
- 17:57Speaker 4: You know, sometimes you catch a rhythm or or you
- 17:59Speaker 4: you just have every team rated properly to start and
- 18:03Speaker 4: it's easy from there and you know, you just you've
- 18:05Speaker 4: got the right rating and there's nothing to worry about.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And that's kind of happened that year. We were in
- 18:10Speaker 2: a good situation.
- 18:11Speaker 4: You had some very very good outs where we yep,
- 18:15Speaker 4: you know, get some good prices and and it was
- 18:17Speaker 4: it was very very easy. Uh and and mister Walters
- 18:20Speaker 4: was involved with some manipulation and we wouldn't get this way,
- 18:24Speaker 4: and we could take advantage of that since he usually won,
- 18:27Speaker 4: you know, his computer.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I usually lined up with my old school approach.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Uh, and you're still doing that. Alan is still doing
- 18:33Speaker 1: People all realize this. Alan still has binders that oh o,
- 18:38Speaker 1: here and I even had that.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Look at this. That's now what is give?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Give?
- 18:42Speaker 3: Tell the public what that is?
- 18:44Speaker 2: You know, Well, it's I've evolved.
- 18:45Speaker 4: I used to have two of these A through M
- 18:48Speaker 4: and N N through Z, but now I've evolved and
- 18:50Speaker 4: upgraded to one. So I'm actually modernizing my approach. I've
- 18:54Speaker 4: gone from two three ring binders to one. That is
- 18:58Speaker 4: meant as a joke, but sure, sure, But.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Here in his old school way, you're doing you're doing
- 19:04Speaker 1: a lot of work, page by page.
- 19:07Speaker 4: We have kind of you know, we're all creatures of
- 19:09Speaker 4: habit and and and this is how I started.
- 19:12Speaker 2: And you know, although I've.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Tweaked my thinking on how to how to do things,
- 19:17Speaker 4: and and you know, the sport is ever changing with
- 19:20Speaker 4: the shot clock and the rules and the propensity to
- 19:23Speaker 4: take three point shots, which is completely ruined the game.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Uh and now and now they do now now it's
- 19:29Speaker 4: just a big business. It's it's an absolute shit show.
- 19:31Speaker 4: Now college basketball is a fucking joke, but at least
- 19:33Speaker 4: it don't at least it don't torture us with the
- 19:35Speaker 4: student athlete bullshit anymore.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You don't hear that word anymore since.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Some kid I just read this in a way here,
- 19:40Speaker 4: some kid just quit high school before a senior year
- 19:45Speaker 4: to weigh his options to to see what school he
- 19:47Speaker 4: wants to go to. So he's doing his senior year
- 19:49Speaker 4: or high school so we can get to the money
- 19:51Speaker 4: quicker and get to the NBA quicker, which of course
- 19:53Speaker 4: is not good for him because he's.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Still just a kid.
- 19:57Speaker 4: And you should experience your four years of high school
- 19:59Speaker 4: and experience your whole adolescence before you become a multimillionaire.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Uh that's just my opinion.
- 20:06Speaker 4: If I were a parent, I would force him to
- 20:07Speaker 4: stay the four years, but you know I'm not, and
- 20:12Speaker 4: money rules, and.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Ye, the fact that the college is allowed this is
- 20:16Speaker 2: just disgusting. I asked him pretense and just in this
- 20:19Speaker 2: to the money, I asked.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Some questions on Twitter. I said, I was an interview you.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I had to take it down. There were so many
- 20:24Speaker 1: questions I had to take it down. Literally, Like the
- 20:27Speaker 1: first guy asked Alan about transfer portal. Nil, you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: how big of an advantage is it for these big
- 20:34Speaker 1: universities compared to you know, I can.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Answer that very succinctly.
- 20:40Speaker 4: N C Central coach by Vodell Moo and a terrific
- 20:42Speaker 4: coach by the way, who no one's ever heard of,
- 20:44Speaker 4: but he's very, very good.
- 20:45Speaker 2: He always beats my number.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Every year with played n C State and they lost
- 20:51Speaker 4: by like fifty and his quote after the game was,
- 20:54Speaker 4: they have twelve man spent on their basketball team.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I have zero dollars. Who do you think, like, yeah,
- 21:02Speaker 2: they but thirty years ago, maybe it's one thirty years ago.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Now. I was told that the NCAA wants to have
- 21:09Speaker 4: four or so power conferences break off and do their
- 21:13Speaker 4: own thing. They they and so I've been contending for
- 21:18Speaker 4: years that the whole U NCAA draw is corrupt. And
- 21:22Speaker 4: everyone laughed at me and said, I'm just you know,
- 21:24Speaker 4: I don't know if us called conspiracy theories, but you know,
- 21:26Speaker 4: just like delusional or words to that effect.
- 21:29Speaker 2: But you know, I know I'm right.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Anything that's done behind closed doors probably isn't on the square,
- 21:35Speaker 4: you know, witnessed our government. Uh And and yeah, I'm
- 21:39Speaker 4: a Libitarian, so I'll keep referencing our government. But yeah,
- 21:42Speaker 4: they go and meet behind closed doors and they talk
- 21:45Speaker 4: about all these uh you know, uh things that they
- 21:48Speaker 4: use to determine who gets what seed, when in fact,
- 21:54Speaker 4: they could have used Jeff Sagarin's ratings or eventually Ken
- 21:57Speaker 4: Palm ratings and had a really good idea of it.
- 22:00Speaker 4: No one's ever gonna call me, because what the hell
- 22:02Speaker 4: do I know? I don't know where any schools to
- 22:03Speaker 4: be rated.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Like, they could have just called a gambler and said,
- 22:06Speaker 2: you know, we do us a favor and send us
- 22:08Speaker 2: your top hundred teams in order. I would gladly do that.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I get nothing out of it. Who do I give
- 22:12Speaker 2: a shit who plays who I'm not. I could never
- 22:14Speaker 2: control that.
- 22:15Speaker 4: But they would never do that because what they wanted,
- 22:18Speaker 4: and what they've always wanted, is they don't like Cinderella,
- 22:22Speaker 4: even though Cinderella sells more tickets and gets more views.
- 22:28Speaker 4: The head of NBC when Loyal Chicago is making their
- 22:31Speaker 4: run with Sister Jean who recently passed away at one.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Hundred and five. God bless her, Praise Jesus.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Right, that was great. That was great for basketball.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it was great for basketball, but he said, we'd
- 22:45Speaker 4: rather have Kentucky because the ratings are better. So someone
- 22:48Speaker 4: actually saw that statement and then did an an analysis.
- 22:53Speaker 4: You know, they have it on all those different networks, True,
- 22:56Speaker 4: you know and whatever, all those networks TRUEBS and TNT.
- 23:02Speaker 2: And and then c you know, CBS or NBC, whatever
- 23:04Speaker 2: the hell it is.
- 23:05Speaker 4: There's four different places to watch college basketball games now,
- 23:08Speaker 4: So he took all of Loyola's games during the run
- 23:12Speaker 4: and compared them to that network on that time frame
- 23:15Speaker 4: to see what the ratings were.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And after the first round, after.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Loyola beat Miamia, Florida, I think it was in the
- 23:20Speaker 4: first round, they were they blew away whatever the ratings
- 23:25Speaker 4: were for all those time frames on years past. Now,
- 23:30Speaker 4: that doesn't prove that people enjoy Cinderella, but for that particular.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Team, the ratings exploded when they were on.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Now, when I remember NCAA tournaments, I remember Butler out
- 23:42Speaker 4: of nowhere making two final fours in a row. I
- 23:44Speaker 4: remember George Mason's run to the final four. You remember
- 23:47Speaker 4: Sister Jane and they run to the final four. You
- 23:49Speaker 4: always remember the underdog, even Cornell making the Sweet sixteen,
- 23:52Speaker 4: or Princeton win here a couple of games, Yeah, the fans.
- 23:55Speaker 2: In fact, Princeton saved the IVY League.
- 23:58Speaker 4: ESPN used to do the NCAA tournament and Princeton's playing
- 24:03Speaker 4: Georgetown and there were one hundred point underdog one verse
- 24:06Speaker 4: sixteen and the game is like pickam as to who's
- 24:09Speaker 4: gonna win, and then the referees, you know, a Princeton
- 24:11Speaker 4: player ended up like in the third row with a.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Bloody nose and they call the follow on him and
- 24:16Speaker 2: George Hell won the game.
- 24:17Speaker 4: But the rain that the word got out, this pre
- 24:20Speaker 4: social media word got out, like you know, because the
- 24:23Speaker 4: scores are being updated everywhere and everyone was watching that game.
- 24:26Speaker 4: It was the highest rated game on ESPN at the time.
- 24:30Speaker 4: And they will go to eliminate the automatic bid.
- 24:32Speaker 2: For the IVY League.
- 24:33Speaker 4: That's what they wanted to do, and that can save
- 24:35Speaker 4: the IVY League from being eliminated from the automatic big
- 24:37Speaker 4: because Princeton's taking the number one team to the wire
- 24:41Speaker 4: and arguably should have won the game. So they're they're
- 24:45Speaker 4: all wrong about trying to funnel the money to all
- 24:49Speaker 4: the power schools, but that's what they do, and that's
- 24:51Speaker 4: what all this nil bullshit's about. Because the power. The
- 24:55Speaker 4: power schools get more nil money from the tournament than
- 24:59Speaker 4: the lower schools at back Lavelle Mote, and the NC
- 25:01Speaker 4: Central coach apparently says, fuck this, I'm not paying some
- 25:04Speaker 4: college kid to come to college. It's some privilege to
- 25:06Speaker 4: come here. They're on scholarship, many of them, and they
- 25:10Speaker 4: play for the lave of basketball. That's the old thought
- 25:15Speaker 4: process with basketball. You go to college to get an education,
- 25:19Speaker 4: albeit maybe not very good anymore, and if you like basketball,
- 25:22Speaker 4: you get to play it. Now it's a big business now.
- 25:24Speaker 4: It's just as soon as there was a billion dollar
- 25:27Speaker 4: TV contract for the NCAA tournament, that was the end
- 25:29Speaker 4: of college basketball. So ESPN simultaneously made the sport great
- 25:34Speaker 4: and ruined it ironically.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, let's talk about a little college basketball now,
- 25:42Speaker 1: because you have to evolve, and you have to evolve.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I know you're still using the binders everything, but you
- 25:47Speaker 1: still have to evolve.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And and now I'm calling you and I see that.
- 25:53Speaker 1: You know, you're having a good season so far after
- 25:58Speaker 1: like a good start in the middle So do you
- 26:01Speaker 1: think your beginning of the season right now is no
- 26:04Speaker 1: different than middle conference tournaments? March Madness where would you
- 26:09Speaker 1: think your strength lies or is it the whole thing?
- 26:12Speaker 4: So it used to be kind of random whether I
- 26:14Speaker 4: started well, because again you're just evaluating teams. It was
- 26:17Speaker 4: what what has happened was where, and maybe where I
- 26:21Speaker 4: had a slight edge to start the year was I'm
- 26:24Speaker 4: very aware of the coaches that are very good at
- 26:26Speaker 4: developing players, so like Mark Schmid at Saint Bonavitch or
- 26:29Speaker 4: Chris Mooney at Richmond, just to name two, when they
- 26:32Speaker 4: get freshmen.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Who went now juniors, freshman sophomore is the biggest league.
- 26:39Speaker 4: But these guys were so good that they'd always the
- 26:41Speaker 4: teams would always get progressively better if they had players
- 26:45Speaker 4: to stay a few years.
- 26:46Speaker 2: So I knew to upgrade.
- 26:48Speaker 4: These teams that had players returning with coaches that are
- 26:51Speaker 4: good at developing them, they always got better. Especially Mark
- 26:55Speaker 4: Sbitt absolutely amazing. The Saint Bonde coach is fantastic. Chris
- 26:59Speaker 4: Mooney too, I shouldn't slight him.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Uh.
- 27:01Speaker 4: The only place that happens now, and even even they
- 27:04Speaker 4: have some transferring there is the Ivy League and a
- 27:06Speaker 4: little lesser in the Patriot League because there's still uh
- 27:10Speaker 4: strong academics.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Uh, they still academics matter. More than than sports there.
- 27:16Speaker 4: My dream is that, uh, the IVY League, because fuck you,
- 27:20Speaker 4: we have more money than all of you, and we're
- 27:22Speaker 4: gonna buy up all the good players and we're gonna
- 27:24Speaker 4: get eight, all eight of our teams in a tournament
- 27:26Speaker 4: and then we'll see what they change the rules, because
- 27:27Speaker 4: the IVY League is played in you know, except for
- 27:29Speaker 4: Penn who plays in a five thousand seat arena, most
- 27:32Speaker 4: of them playing like a thousand seed arenas, like no
- 27:35Speaker 4: money there, like uh uh you know, and who cares
- 27:38Speaker 4: about Brown or Dartmouth or or or Columbia. Uh So
- 27:41Speaker 4: that that's my dream is they just sell out and say,
- 27:44Speaker 4: fuck you, we're gonna get all the good players. We're
- 27:47Speaker 4: gonna We're not gonna we don't care about our academics anymore,
- 27:50Speaker 4: and we're gonna get all eight of our teams in
- 27:51Speaker 4: the NCAA tournament.
- 27:52Speaker 2: That ain't gonna happen, and I really hope it doesn't.
- 27:53Speaker 4: But in the back of my mind, a part of me,
- 27:55Speaker 4: uh you know, wants to screw screw this big business
- 27:58Speaker 4: that's going on now is far me go.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Because uh, my theory is that a coach at the.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Same school will typically recruit a similar type athlete, So
- 28:13Speaker 4: Duke will get an A plus athlete, where Maryland will
- 28:16Speaker 4: get an A athlete, where Ken will get a c athlete,
- 28:19Speaker 4: and and and see Central we'll get a D athlete.
- 28:23Speaker 4: So you know, there's there's a tier of of of
- 28:26Speaker 4: where a good player would typically go that is no
- 28:31Speaker 4: longer the case. Kids just transfer where they can make
- 28:33Speaker 4: the most money, and they do it.
- 28:37Speaker 2: NonStop.
- 28:38Speaker 4: So Baylor, who's a top twenty program, every year they
- 28:41Speaker 4: have an entire new team. And that's right across the board.
- 28:46Speaker 4: So when I'm evaluating these teams now number one, it's
- 28:49Speaker 4: a little trickier because it's not guys developing players, it's
- 28:51Speaker 4: not players returning, So there's some consistency to their thing.
- 28:55Speaker 2: It's who has the most.
- 28:56Speaker 4: Union money and who has you know, uh, who can
- 28:59Speaker 4: bring in the best players. To some extent, Coaching still
- 29:03Speaker 4: matters a lot, but that's all I can still go
- 29:05Speaker 4: on is how good is this coach? And you know,
- 29:08Speaker 4: guess at how good the talent is, and then guess
- 29:10Speaker 4: at a number. So whereas in years past, if a
- 29:15Speaker 4: team had an effort that I that was unexpected to me,
- 29:18Speaker 4: I'd ignore it because I knew that I.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Probably had my power rating very very close.
- 29:23Speaker 4: Now, when I make a game three and it closes
- 29:26Speaker 4: eight and they lose by fifty, I'm more prone to
- 29:30Speaker 4: react to that, which is not a good thing because
- 29:34Speaker 4: you know, you spend all this time trying to evaluate
- 29:37Speaker 4: a team for a rating, and now I'm doubting it
- 29:41Speaker 4: because they have twelve new players, Like, maybe I'm just wrong.
- 29:45Speaker 4: It's and and yeah, it's an absolute shit show. They've
- 29:48Speaker 4: completely completely ruined the spirit of the game, and they've
- 29:52Speaker 4: completely ruined the game itself. They're getting their one oh
- 29:54Speaker 4: five ninety scores a lot more because they because they think,
- 29:58Speaker 4: once again, they think the powers that be. I think
- 30:00Speaker 4: that number one, people want to watch Kentucky rather than
- 30:03Speaker 4: loyal Chicago. Number two, they think they want to see
- 30:05Speaker 4: high scoring games rather than low scoring games.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Neither one of those are true, but.
- 30:09Speaker 4: That's where they drive every single rule change to get
- 30:13Speaker 4: to that. With a power schools win and the scores
- 30:16Speaker 4: get higher, so they shorten the shot clock, which makes
- 30:19Speaker 4: advantage more talented teams, and they change the rules tool
- 30:23Speaker 4: off a little more, you know, freedom, and and and
- 30:29Speaker 4: now that they're all following the NBA model, which which
- 30:32Speaker 4: is rather surprising. It took them a long time to
- 30:34Speaker 4: figure out that three is more than two. The analytics
- 30:39Speaker 4: told them that are three point shots better than a
- 30:40Speaker 4: two point shot? Now, how fucking stupid do you have
- 30:42Speaker 4: to be to not know that three is more than
- 30:44Speaker 4: two and you should be trying to take more three pointers?
- 30:47Speaker 4: But the analytics that they wait for computers to tell
- 30:49Speaker 4: them that it's it's it's really bizarre. So anyway, Yeah,
- 30:52Speaker 4: so I'm a little more uncomfortable now to start the year,
- 30:56Speaker 4: and I try to remind myself that i'm probably you know,
- 30:59Speaker 4: please don't over act when you're wrong, But it's a
- 31:03Speaker 4: much harder reminder. Number one, I'm sixty seven years old,
- 31:05Speaker 4: not thirty two. And number two, they have twelve new
- 31:09Speaker 4: players and I could just be wrong. So the first week,
- 31:14Speaker 4: I'm not surprised that it didn't go well. However, this week,
- 31:17Speaker 4: the work has been fantastic because they've now had two
- 31:20Speaker 4: games and I could take a lot of inferences on
- 31:23Speaker 4: those two games based on how their opponents did in
- 31:28Speaker 4: their second game, and you know, just just normal simple logic.
- 31:32Speaker 4: So I'm not surprised that I'm doing better this week
- 31:35Speaker 4: than the first week.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you about, like, how do you
- 31:39Speaker 1: win that the rosters, different teams jumping nil? How do
- 31:42Speaker 1: you win now compared to years ago, which you think
- 31:45Speaker 1: you can win at the same percentage? You know, You've
- 31:48Speaker 1: told me in the offseason when I went up to
- 31:50Speaker 1: the Fox with's a couple of times, I'm not doing
- 31:52Speaker 1: basketball next year, and every year we still do it.
- 31:54Speaker 1: So every every year still do it? Is the reasons
- 31:58Speaker 1: why he said, you're not doing it because of these transfers,
- 32:01Speaker 1: the nil, the money, and like, is that the reason why?
- 32:06Speaker 4: No, it's it's it's uh, that's a part of it,
- 32:08Speaker 4: but not for the reason you think I'm a So
- 32:11Speaker 4: I went to Penn and the Poluster is just an
- 32:14Speaker 4: unbelievable arena to watch basketball in. And back when I
- 32:17Speaker 4: went in the seventies, all the big five games were there,
- 32:21Speaker 4: which was lesalavill Andova, Penn, Saint Jose, uh and Temple,
- 32:27Speaker 4: and they played all the games at the Pluster all
- 32:29Speaker 4: there were and half the tickets went to one school
- 32:31Speaker 4: and half the tickets went to the other. Oh's never
- 32:33Speaker 4: been a better atmosphere for for any game imaginable. You know,
- 32:36Speaker 4: people want to kill each other on both sides of
- 32:38Speaker 4: the things and then they go drake afterwards together.
- 32:40Speaker 2: It was just unbelievable.
- 32:42Speaker 4: And it wasn't home advantage Penn because it was the
- 32:44Speaker 4: plaster because half the tickets went to one school and
- 32:46Speaker 4: a lot of them played games there anyway, because it's
- 32:47Speaker 4: such a great venue and basketball wasn't huge at the time,
- 32:51Speaker 4: so there was no reason for them to build these
- 32:53Speaker 4: brand new, you know, big arenas to try to get
- 32:55Speaker 4: recruits and generate income.
- 32:57Speaker 2: So they all played there because it was more tradition.
- 32:59Speaker 2: It was more about the love of the game.
- 33:01Speaker 4: So I grew to be a college basketball fan, the
- 33:05Speaker 4: one sport I did not play as a kid because
- 33:06Speaker 4: short news don't typically excel at basketball, and that wasn't
- 33:10Speaker 4: my gig.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I was a baseball guy.
- 33:13Speaker 4: But I I delved into other other sports and and
- 33:16Speaker 4: and probably better than most would actually think. But basketball
- 33:20Speaker 4: wasn't my thing. Yet I became this basketball junkie. So
- 33:25Speaker 4: the the the nil and the rules. They had forty
- 33:27Speaker 4: five They had no shocklock when I first watched it,
- 33:29Speaker 4: and then they had a forty five second shock clock,
- 33:31Speaker 4: and that's what I prefer It's not supposed to be
- 33:34Speaker 4: an NBA minor league.
- 33:37Speaker 2: But now it is.
- 33:38Speaker 4: And so it's not that it's not that it's become
- 33:43Speaker 4: you know, X percentage more difficult because of the nil
- 33:45Speaker 4: and the rampant transferring it has, but I get a
- 33:47Speaker 4: handle on that pretty quickly. It's that this game I
- 33:50Speaker 4: once loved has completely lost its way. So I'm actually
- 33:54Speaker 4: disgusted by by every minute that I'm working on it,
- 33:57Speaker 4: because I just really, you know, I just can't. I
- 33:59Speaker 4: can't stand with the done to this really really beautiful
- 34:02Speaker 4: game that was played out in these real small arenas,
- 34:04Speaker 4: with the local reps cheating for the home team and
- 34:07Speaker 4: you know, yelling all these racial, mean spirited things, but
- 34:10Speaker 4: it was all done in fun. Now, you can't go
- 34:13Speaker 4: a BYU game. They did the hook them the lawn.
- 34:15Speaker 4: They were playing Texas and they did the hook them
- 34:17Speaker 4: horns down, and they were asked not to do that
- 34:19Speaker 4: again because they were offending Texas. Well, who gives a
- 34:21Speaker 4: fuck off your offending Texas. That's the whole point of it,
- 34:24Speaker 4: that's the whole fun of it. That's the people just
- 34:26Speaker 4: completely lost their minds with all this.
- 34:28Speaker 2: You know, you gotta be nice to everybody. We're humans,
- 34:30Speaker 2: were flawed, We're not nice. We're mean. But this isn't
- 34:33Speaker 2: even being mean spirited.
- 34:34Speaker 4: This is going to a basketball game and enjoying yourself
- 34:36Speaker 4: by digging up shit on the players and rubbing it
- 34:40Speaker 4: into them. And I'm sure they all laugh about it after,
- 34:43Speaker 4: but they could say some real mean spirited shit. And
- 34:46Speaker 4: back then it was it was borderline being beyond mean spirited,
- 34:49Speaker 4: like it often sounded very racist, but it wasn't.
- 34:53Speaker 2: It was all done and fun. And now it's you.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Know, like I said, anytime it becomes a big business,
- 34:59Speaker 4: it becomes very corrupt and and and that's what we
- 35:02Speaker 4: have here. We have a very corrupt game that that
- 35:05Speaker 4: that is is going to be ruined, I predict eventually,
- 35:09Speaker 4: because if once you lose Cinderella, the NCAA tournament loses
- 35:12Speaker 4: this charm. And they will find that out. Maybe not
- 35:14Speaker 4: when I'm alive, but at some point they will find
- 35:16Speaker 4: that out. They were all happy they got the top
- 35:18Speaker 4: four teams to the final fall last year. I guarantee
- 35:21Speaker 4: that if that continues, their ratings will drop.
- 35:24Speaker 1: You called them out every year on my show. We
- 35:27Speaker 1: do a show over year for the last like five
- 35:29Speaker 1: six years, maybe more about the committee and stuff and
- 35:32Speaker 1: the things that has happened. Uh, I didn't even forgot.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Isn't that what they want for ratings though your top
- 35:40Speaker 1: four teams?
- 35:41Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I think the fans love the other way, having a Cinderella,
- 35:44Speaker 1: not even a Cinderella.
- 35:45Speaker 4: You know, guy proved it when he went out, when
- 35:47Speaker 4: he went through the Loyalist Chicago thing, and and and
- 35:49Speaker 4: and I don't know if he followed it up with
- 35:52Speaker 4: similar things. But when when someone makes a run that's unexpected,
- 35:56Speaker 4: that's all. That's what you read about, right, you read
- 35:59Speaker 4: the articles? You know, can they do it again? Even
- 36:02Speaker 4: a first round upset like they talked about, that's what
- 36:04Speaker 4: they talk about.
- 36:05Speaker 2: Big deal. Duke one is a forty point favorite, who
- 36:07Speaker 2: gives a shit?
- 36:08Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:09Speaker 4: South Dakota State winning is a ten point underdog. Will
- 36:12Speaker 4: they do it again on Saturday or Sunday? You know,
- 36:14Speaker 4: it's it's it's it's it's human to root for an underdog.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Virginia Maryland beat them Baltimore, Baltimore County, right, I don't know.
- 36:26Speaker 3: How any points they were. I think it was at
- 36:28Speaker 3: least twenty.
- 36:29Speaker 2: Actually, I think that. I think he's the coach of
- 36:31Speaker 2: Virginia Now.
- 36:31Speaker 4: I think the guy who coached them is now the yes, yes,
- 36:34Speaker 4: oh yeah, I think he was the coach of Baltimball
- 36:36Speaker 4: County then.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Yeah, isn't that amazing really good coach? Yeah, I never
- 36:40Speaker 2: thought of that. Yeah, ironically he's the coach of Virginia now,
- 36:43Speaker 2: very good.
- 36:43Speaker 3: By the way, By the way, who are your coaches? Yere?
- 36:46Speaker 1: Like those little schools like Oakland and who are your coaches?
- 36:49Speaker 3: You really like? Look at me like, maybe you're I don't.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Know, three or four coaches that you absolutely love their work.
- 36:54Speaker 1: And no one's gonna hear of some of these guys too, probably, you.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Know, the best job in the country last year done
- 37:00Speaker 4: by Eric Ollen at Cal San Diego.
- 37:02Speaker 2: There you go, Okay, not even close.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Is he still there? He's still there.
- 37:06Speaker 2: He's had New Mexico now okay, which was a big
- 37:09Speaker 2: step up for him.
- 37:10Speaker 4: He was Cal San Diego. They were a D two school.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Now Cal San Diego. You know, I'm not I'm not
- 37:16Speaker 4: in the loop with college admissions. But it's a beautiful
- 37:19Speaker 4: campus in La Joya, up on a hill there as
- 37:22Speaker 4: you Hadul col Oyo. Absolutely gorgeous, but it's also extremely
- 37:27Speaker 4: difficult to get in academically.
- 37:29Speaker 2: They are brutal, very small school, elite elite, elite.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Applicants, and he turned those players who five years prior
- 37:39Speaker 4: were was a D two school, So he doesn't have
- 37:42Speaker 4: talent there. They're not pouring money into their basketball program
- 37:46Speaker 4: because they only care about academics. And he had them
- 37:49Speaker 4: playing pick them against Michigan in the first round last
- 37:52Speaker 4: year in a game they would have won if they
- 37:54Speaker 4: if they shot the ball all all. So he he played.
- 38:00Speaker 6: He had this brutally tough academic school that doesn't give
- 38:03Speaker 6: a fuck about basketball that was D two five years
- 38:07Speaker 6: prior playing pick him to a very good Big ten team.
- 38:11Speaker 4: So he was a number one coach last year. Another
- 38:13Speaker 4: guy who's under the radar is Chris Markwood at Maine,
- 38:17Speaker 4: and ironically, Cooper Flagg kind of wanted to go to Maine.
- 38:19Speaker 4: His younger brother or his brother or a twin brother.
- 38:22Speaker 4: I don't know if he his brother goes to Maine University.
- 38:25Speaker 4: Now he's not as good, but Cooper wanted to go there.
- 38:29Speaker 4: And I would argue that, you know, he would have
- 38:32Speaker 4: done better by going to Maine because Markwood's a better
- 38:35Speaker 4: coach than Shire.
- 38:37Speaker 2: I like Shire.
- 38:38Speaker 4: I think he's pretty good, but he's not markwood markwood
- 38:40Speaker 4: Work burkles up there.
- 38:41Speaker 2: He has a zero talent. Maine is a hockey school.
- 38:44Speaker 4: It's in one of the areas of Maine that actually
- 38:46Speaker 4: isn't very nice, and it's fucking cold at or No,
- 38:51Speaker 4: it's north of Augusta, in the middle of the state.
- 38:54Speaker 4: It's cold, there's nothing to do. They don't give a
- 38:56Speaker 4: shit about basketball. They don't always play on campus. And
- 39:01Speaker 4: he turned that no talent team into into a competitive
- 39:04Speaker 4: American East team.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Just absolute burkele worker. So he's another one that no one.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Knows about, like the Mark spitt and Chris Mooney, anyone
- 39:10Speaker 4: that does this knows they're really good.
- 39:11Speaker 2: In fact, anyone that does this knows. You know who
- 39:14Speaker 2: the good coaches were.
- 39:14Speaker 4: I knew Grant mccaslan, who's a Texas Tech now, was
- 39:17Speaker 4: a wizard what he did a little rock years ago.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Uh So those were the top two last year. But
- 39:25Speaker 4: there's a whole myriad of coaches that are that are
- 39:27Speaker 4: that are unknown, that are really good. Uh A lot
- 39:30Speaker 4: of these guys that are brought up from D two
- 39:32Speaker 4: are are are bowling minds. Johnny Tower at St. Thomas
- 39:36Speaker 4: another genius. Watch them run offense and and it's it's
- 39:39Speaker 4: an absolute beautiful vision.
- 39:41Speaker 2: Uh, how efficient and how well they run offense?
- 39:45Speaker 1: How did that coach do How did the coach do
- 39:48Speaker 1: that moved up to New Mexico.
- 39:49Speaker 3: How is he this is his first year, He probably
- 39:52Speaker 3: has one or.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Two games underneath them. How does he adjust? Does he
- 39:55Speaker 1: adjust for the bigger type of school talent?
- 39:58Speaker 3: Whatever it is. I'm sure he do what he does.
- 40:01Speaker 4: I'm sure he will, but I'm also sure he'd rather
- 40:03Speaker 4: have players for two or three years, which probably won't happen.
- 40:06Speaker 2: And I'm not so sure he'll even do.
- 40:08Speaker 4: You know, they're playing four points below and the Mexell's
- 40:10Speaker 4: playing four and half points lower Thankel San Diego right now.
- 40:14Speaker 4: This year's the Mexico team, which isn't overly talented, by
- 40:16Speaker 4: the way, But this guy, you know, it's it's a
- 40:19Speaker 4: whole he'd be better if players were there two three years.
- 40:23Speaker 4: There's another one that you know, he runs real complex
- 40:25Speaker 4: stuff and the defenses is very tricky to learn. There's
- 40:29Speaker 4: some guys it takes a long time to learn their
- 40:32Speaker 4: learn that stuff. The coach at Washington State is also
- 40:35Speaker 4: very good, David Riley. He was talking in the press
- 40:37Speaker 4: conference the other day, he said, I screwed up. He said,
- 40:40Speaker 4: you know, it's he runs his kind of read and
- 40:42Speaker 4: react system where there's no rules about what to do,
- 40:46Speaker 4: but you have to take inferences for what by what
- 40:48Speaker 4: the defense is doing. What the defense does dictates what
- 40:52Speaker 4: you're going to do on offense, and the kids were
- 40:55Speaker 4: overthinking everything. He said, I screwed up. So I just
- 40:58Speaker 4: dumbed everything down. I made it a lot simple for him,
- 41:00Speaker 4: and we came out and played a lot better. So
- 41:02Speaker 4: those first two games were on me. That's what he said. Wow,
- 41:06Speaker 4: But he'd rather coach where they run a more you know,
- 41:09Speaker 4: convoluted type stuff like if you can, the more complex
- 41:12Speaker 4: you make it, the more harder it is on you
- 41:14Speaker 4: to depend it. Okay, but to him for keeping it simple.
- 41:18Speaker 4: And I'm sure he'll work in his thing. But he
- 41:20Speaker 4: has new you know, when you have twelve new players
- 41:22Speaker 4: every year, there's no one there that could then help
- 41:26Speaker 4: the kids out to try to teach them this complex stuff.
- 41:29Speaker 1: So there, Yeah, we have five minutes left. I had
- 41:32Speaker 1: nine questions, I asked one, so we're gonna have to fish.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I'll try to be most sync, but it's not my demeanor.
- 41:37Speaker 1: No, no, it's my fault, really, but I want to
- 41:40Speaker 1: I want to let you go. So here, we got
- 41:42Speaker 1: five minutes left. You said something to the other day
- 41:44Speaker 1: that almost blew me out of the chair. You just
- 41:46Speaker 1: don't even know it yet. It happened yesterday with oh,
- 41:49Speaker 1: I think it was Oakland. I think it was Oakland.
- 41:51Speaker 3: That it was was Oakland went from thirty to thirty
- 41:54Speaker 3: three and a half?
- 41:54Speaker 2: Is that yesterday? Yeah? Then back down again?
- 41:56Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah?
- 41:57Speaker 1: Okay, So so that line was three and a half
- 42:00Speaker 1: and you were like, I don't care.
- 42:02Speaker 3: I don't care about the line. It's better now. I
- 42:04Speaker 3: don't care. Who about the other way? I like my side.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Give me a dirty three and a half, whatever it
- 42:08Speaker 1: may be. And then you said something to me. You said,
- 42:12Speaker 1: closing line value. That doesn't mean much. I don't I
- 42:16Speaker 1: was schooled under getting the best of the lines and
- 42:19Speaker 1: the closing line value. Did you mean college basketball? Did
- 42:23Speaker 1: you mean in general?
- 42:24Speaker 3: What did you know?
- 42:24Speaker 4: So let me let me let me find tune that
- 42:26Speaker 4: a little bit for me personally. Who's had some success
- 42:31Speaker 4: with this?
- 42:33Speaker 2: All right?
- 42:34Speaker 4: Let me uh let me start with the premise double
- 42:36Speaker 4: one greatness is achieved by being different unless your box Zuckerberg.
- 42:41Speaker 2: And steal someone's stuff and become a millionaire with it.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Typically, when you find the only the only thing, the
- 42:46Speaker 4: only time you're great is when you do something new.
- 42:48Speaker 4: These inventors who didn't steal from Tesla or from someone else.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Uh like Elon Musk who went to Penn by the way, Uh,
- 42:59Speaker 4: what he's doing is different and new. Any you know anything,
- 43:06Speaker 4: Copying someone isn't gonna make you great. Being innovative, being
- 43:10Speaker 4: creative is going to make you great. So being different
- 43:13Speaker 4: is the way to go. If you play fallow the leader,
- 43:16Speaker 4: you're always going to be second best because the leader
- 43:18Speaker 4: is going to be better. And the only time you
- 43:20Speaker 4: get better than the leader is when you fine tune
- 43:22Speaker 4: what he does. So the only time you get better
- 43:24Speaker 4: is when you do something different than what he does.
- 43:27Speaker 4: So for someone like me who's had some success with this,
- 43:32Speaker 4: if I'm constantly laying three in the games closing five,
- 43:34Speaker 4: I have nothing that's new or different than anybody else.
- 43:38Speaker 4: But if I'm laying three in the games closing one,
- 43:41Speaker 4: well I'm seeing it a little different than they are.
- 43:43Speaker 4: And that's a good thing for me because I will
- 43:45Speaker 4: continue to have success because they're gonna continually be wrong,
- 43:48Speaker 4: They're gonna have to adjust to what I'm doing. So
- 43:50Speaker 4: I got it right and they got it wrong. So
- 43:53Speaker 4: I want every game to move against me. Now, if
- 43:55Speaker 4: you're first starting as a handicapper, yes, CLV is a
- 43:59Speaker 4: good guide to have. So I'm saying, specifically for me,
- 44:04Speaker 4: I want every game to move against me. I don't
- 44:06Speaker 4: want I want my thought process to be on its
- 44:08Speaker 4: own and unique and different and better.
- 44:12Speaker 2: May not.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Yeah, but but typically if you respect the closing line,
- 44:18Speaker 4: which I you know, I don't necessarily respect the closing
- 44:20Speaker 4: line either, uh, because sometimes the smartest people are hiding
- 44:25Speaker 4: what they're doing, and the line that's closing on the
- 44:28Speaker 4: screen isn't exactly a reflection of what the true line
- 44:31Speaker 4: should be. In other words, if you're a really big outfit,
- 44:34Speaker 4: you're going to bet the screen from four to five
- 44:36Speaker 4: and then find ways to bet plus five without anyone knowing,
- 44:40Speaker 4: so the game actually should be three and that's five.
- 44:44Speaker 4: You may know that dynamic too. That doesn't happen as
- 44:46Speaker 4: much anymore because people are too fucking stupid to do it,
- 44:49Speaker 4: and much shit chat and you know, everyone wants to,
- 44:55Speaker 4: you know, brag about how smart they are and et cetera,
- 44:57Speaker 4: et cetera. Yeah, it's just human nature, so it's really
- 45:00Speaker 4: hard to hide stuff. But uh, I'm not necessarily a
- 45:05Speaker 4: believer that the closing line is a true reflection of
- 45:07Speaker 4: what that line should be. So I remember the other
- 45:11Speaker 4: night my screen blew up and I couldn't even write
- 45:12Speaker 4: the closing lines down. I said, you know what, because
- 45:14Speaker 4: I always looked at the closed line to see where
- 45:16Speaker 4: I was different. And maybe I'm wrong, And but you
- 45:19Speaker 4: know what, I liked it better when when I didn't
- 45:21Speaker 4: know what the closing line was, because now I'm not
- 45:23Speaker 4: influenced by you know, something that may be total bullshit.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Maybe there was some injury, maybe the team had the
- 45:27Speaker 4: flu and I didn't know it and I never got
- 45:29Speaker 4: to read about it. You know, you don't know why
- 45:31Speaker 4: games are being met sometimes, right, Oh, maybe someone was
- 45:34Speaker 4: just screwing around and actually betting the other side off screen,
- 45:36Speaker 4: which I hope happens, but sure he doesn't.
- 45:40Speaker 2: So these so these people.
- 45:41Speaker 4: Go on there and brag about how you know, I
- 45:46Speaker 4: love it when someone brags it. I laid three in
- 45:48Speaker 4: a game that's already five. This is when I stopped
- 45:50Speaker 4: watching social media. Someone someone had bragged oh I laid
- 45:53Speaker 4: three in this game, Like, well, why didn't you say
- 45:55Speaker 4: you laid three when it was three everywhere? Right, instead
- 45:57Speaker 4: of telling us when it's five, like yeah, like you
- 46:02Speaker 4: just wrote words out like all right, well tell us
- 46:04Speaker 4: why you're going to wagh three. I used to put
- 46:06Speaker 4: games out all the time, but it just it just
- 46:08Speaker 4: it just wasn't worth it. Sure, sure it wasn't worth Well, listen,
- 46:12Speaker 4: we're gonna wrap. I get too pained when I lose.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Sure you feel, but you feel worse for them than
- 46:16Speaker 1: you do your own money.
