- 1:41Speaker 2: day away from Friday, one day away from the weekend,
- 1:43Speaker 2: one day away from the long weekend for some, for
- 1:47Speaker 2: Labor Day. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says the heat's
- 1:49Speaker 2: going to continue today. Heat advisory remains in effect. Air
- 1:52Speaker 2: temps in the mid to upper 90s, but will feel
- 1:55Speaker 2: more like the low 100s with the heat index. Clear
- 1:57Speaker 2: and muggy tonight, lows in the mid-70s. Tomorrow, storms are
- 2:00Speaker 2: on the way, hopefully not impacting anybody. High school football
- 2:03Speaker 2: tomorrow night. Brian says the storms will be widely scattered.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But if you get them in your neighborhood, they could
- 2:08Speaker 2: be severe, should be in the mid-90s. Widespread showers and
- 2:11Speaker 2: thunderstorms on Saturday. Not good news if you're heading to
- 2:15Speaker 2: Morgantown for WVU's opener. But we are at least going
- 2:18Speaker 2: to get some relief from the heat ties on Saturday
- 2:21Speaker 2: in the upper 80s. Sunday and, well, you know, Sunday
- 2:25Speaker 2: and into Labor Day Monday actually looking pretty good. Cooler temps,
- 2:28Speaker 2: definitely less humid, lots of sun after we get rid
- 2:30Speaker 2: of some morning rain on Sunday. Again, much more comfortable
- 2:33Speaker 2: both days. Highs are going to be in the mid-80s.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Follow Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes and the team by
- 2:38Speaker 2: downloading the Metro News television app and on social media
- 2:41Speaker 2: as well. Coming up at noon today, Kanawha County will
- 2:44Speaker 2: be getting a new county commissioner. The swearing-in for Austin
- 2:46Speaker 2: Gessel is sent for noon today. He'll be completing the
- 2:49Speaker 2: term of Lance Wheeler, who resigned to take over the
- 2:52Speaker 2: ambulance service in Kanawha County. Austin Gessel is going to
- 2:54Speaker 2: join us later in the show. prior to being sworn
- 2:58Speaker 2: in later today, plus several other things to get to
- 3:00Speaker 2: in the news. And as always, your calls and texts.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Guarantee Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony Taylor text 304-935-5008. Want to
- 3:05Speaker 2: welcome to the show now our good friend from the
- 3:08Speaker 2: city of Nitro. It's Joe Stevens. Good morning, sir, and
- 3:10Speaker 2: welcome to the show.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Good morning, David.
- 3:18Speaker 6: I hope Thursday is treating you well so far.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, so far, but we're only a few hours in.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So get back with me in six, seven hours down
- 3:26Speaker 2: the road.
- 3:29Speaker 6: As always, just put the plow down and keep on pushing.
- 3:32Speaker 2: That's all you can do. So for the fourth year,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Nitro in St. Albans are going to team up for
- 3:38Speaker 2: a joint Labor Day weekend celebration on Sunday night with
- 3:41Speaker 2: fireworks and whatnot. Joe, talk about how this whole thing
- 3:45Speaker 2: came about four years ago.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Well, Dave, I got called one morning. I was just
- 3:50Speaker 6: sitting in my office, and the phone rang, and where
- 3:54Speaker 6: I might have gotten a text, it was basically I
- 3:56Speaker 6: was being called to the principal's office.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Of course.
- 3:58Speaker 6: The other one is Mayor Casebolt's office. And so I
- 4:02Speaker 6: walked across the street, and as I walked into his office,
- 4:06Speaker 6: I said, this is going to be different. Because joining
- 4:10Speaker 6: him in his office was the mayor of St. Albans,
- 4:13Speaker 6: Scott James. Mm-hmm. And I said, okay, guys, what's up?
- 4:18Speaker 6: What have I got to plan or what do I
- 4:20Speaker 6: got to do? He goes, well, you know, we both
- 4:22Speaker 6: do fireworks. Both cities do fireworks celebration and a show.
- 4:28Speaker 6: And we'd like to combine our efforts to be one
- 4:32Speaker 6: big show. I said, well, that sounds like a good idea.
- 4:35Speaker 1: And you know what?
- 4:36Speaker 6: I've been thinking about this kind of the same thing.
- 4:39Speaker 6: And what I want to do is I want to
- 4:41Speaker 6: close a bridge. and they both looked at me like
- 4:44Speaker 6: with deer, uh, you know, the headlights and the, uh,
- 4:47Speaker 6: the deer and the headlights kind of thing. And I,
- 4:49Speaker 6: they said, what are you talking about? I said, yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 6: I want to close the Dick Henderson bridge one night
- 4:53Speaker 6: and let people walk on the bridge and, uh, view
- 4:57Speaker 6: the fireworks. And they said, well, how are you going
- 5:00Speaker 6: to close the bridge? I said, I'm going to ask.
- 5:03Speaker 6: And so, you know, and, and, and to be honest,
- 5:07Speaker 6: I contacted the, uh, department of highways at the time. And, and,
- 5:12Speaker 6: And they kind of just said, okay, here's the permit.
- 5:15Speaker 6: And they worked with me on what we had to
- 5:20Speaker 6: do for EMS and notifying the public and everything. So
- 5:25Speaker 6: that was four years ago, and we're going to do
- 5:28Speaker 6: it again Sunday night.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I was going to say, how exactly does one plan
- 5:32Speaker 2: on– you know, closing a major bridge like the Dick
- 5:35Speaker 2: Henderson Bridge. So you just call the Department of Bridge
- 5:38Speaker 2: Closures and just said, all right, all right, Bill, this
- 5:42Speaker 2: is your thing or whatever your name is. We're going
- 5:44Speaker 2: to close a bridge for one night. I think it's
- 5:46Speaker 2: a great idea. You know, that's the bridge that connects
- 5:49Speaker 2: the two communities, Nitro and St.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Albans.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So people actually get to walk out on the bridge, which,
- 5:54Speaker 2: you know, you don't normally get to do, kind of
- 5:56Speaker 2: fellowship one with the other, the two communities and anybody
- 5:59Speaker 2: else that shows up and take in the fireworks. I
- 6:01Speaker 2: think it's pretty cool.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Well, everybody's talking right now that the initial fireworks are
- 6:06Speaker 6: going to be Friday night for the Battle of the
- 6:09Speaker 6: Bridge football game. But that's another story for another time. But, yeah,
- 6:14Speaker 6: at 830, the Nitro police on our side, on the
- 6:18Speaker 6: Nitro side, shut down the bridge. And then the St.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Albans police and the fire department shut down the bridge
- 6:24Speaker 6: on the St. Albans side at Route 21. and Route 25,
- 6:29Speaker 6: and folks come walking out. And I'm going to tell
- 6:31Speaker 6: you there's a couple thousand folks that come out on
- 6:33Speaker 6: the bridge because the fireworks are set off at the
- 6:37Speaker 6: boat ramp. over at Roadside Park over in St. Albans
- 6:42Speaker 6: right there. That's where the pyro sets up and that's
- 6:46Speaker 6: where the fireworks are let off. And viewing from the
- 6:50Speaker 6: top of the bridge is like magnificent. And there is
- 6:53Speaker 6: a safety shot area that actually includes one of the
- 6:57Speaker 6: lanes on Route 60 and parts of the river that
- 7:02Speaker 6: And we handle, you know, the patrolling of the river.
- 7:06Speaker 6: The St. Albans Fire Department, the South Charleston Fire Department,
- 7:10Speaker 6: and Charleston Police Department are out there. We've got a
- 7:14Speaker 6: map and, you know, just kind of coordinating that because
- 7:16Speaker 6: a lot of folks come out with their boats and
- 7:18Speaker 6: everything to watch the fireworks. But it's just a cool
- 7:22Speaker 6: way of two communities together. Getting together for a fun
- 7:25Speaker 6: time for everybody to have, you know, just on a
- 7:28Speaker 6: Sunday night. And as you just mentioned a little bit ago,
- 7:32Speaker 6: Brian Hughes is saying that we're going to have pretty
- 7:34Speaker 6: good weather.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some rain expected Sunday morning. But after that,
- 7:38Speaker 2: it looks really good for both Sunday and Monday. So
- 7:40Speaker 2: it's going to be really, really nice when you go
- 7:42Speaker 2: to do this on Sunday night. Now, again, you start
- 7:44Speaker 2: shutting down the bridge there about 830. And then the
- 7:47Speaker 2: fireworks will start around 930. What time do things generally speak?
- 7:51Speaker 2: I know you can't get it exact, but what time
- 7:54Speaker 2: do things generally start to get back to normal? When
- 7:56Speaker 2: do they reopen the bridges?
- 7:58Speaker 6: We have the bridges closed from officially from 830 until 1030.
- 8:03Speaker 6: But usually things are open around 10 o'clock or so.
- 8:07Speaker 6: But officially 830 to 1030. We also per the permit,
- 8:12Speaker 6: we have a safety lane, which is on the west
- 8:14Speaker 6: side of the bridge going over. It's a lane so that.
- 8:18Speaker 6: If any of the first responders, ambulances, that sort of thing,
- 8:22Speaker 6: have to go across the bridge one way or the other,
- 8:25Speaker 6: we have that lane open. So there is a safety
- 8:29Speaker 6: lane for traffic, for emergency traffic during the 8.30 to 10.30 period.
- 8:35Speaker 6: But usually it's about 10 o'clock where we go, okay,
- 8:39Speaker 6: we're done. Let's open it back up kind of thing.
- 8:43Speaker 6: But officially 8.30 to 10.30, just to kind of have
- 8:44Speaker 6: that buffer.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Talking to Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro. Energy
- 8:50Speaker 2: demand is rising fast. A meeting that starts right here
- 8:53Speaker 2: in West Virginia. With more than 75 years of experience,
- 8:55Speaker 2: TC Energy proudly operates a 2,300-mile Columbia gas transmission system.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Investing in local communities, supporting jobs, and helping deliver the
- 9:02Speaker 2: reliable natural gas that powers homes, businesses, and industries across
- 9:06Speaker 2: the state. Because when West Virginia grows, America grows. TC Energy.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Energy Connected, learn more at tcenergy.com. I do have to
- 9:13Speaker 2: ask you, what was that first year like? Because I
- 9:15Speaker 2: remember I've interviewed you about this just about every year,
- 9:18Speaker 2: you know, you've done this. And I'm just kind of curious,
- 9:20Speaker 2: when you got this idea and you sold it to
- 9:23Speaker 2: the community, we talked about it on the radio, put
- 9:25Speaker 2: it on social media, so on and so forth. What
- 9:27Speaker 2: was that first year like?
- 9:30Speaker 6: The craziest thing was when a driver came up and
- 9:36Speaker 6: we had blocked the– Nitro side of the bridge on
- 9:43Speaker 6: Route 25 there. And they said, but I've got to
- 9:46Speaker 6: get over to get my Chinese food.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know, all bets are off if
- 9:51Speaker 2: it's Chinese food, man.
- 9:53Speaker 6: I mean, exactly. And we said, well, you know, you
- 9:56Speaker 6: got the interstate and you got the Dunbar Bridge. And
- 9:59Speaker 6: that's what you got to do. But you don't understand.
- 10:01Speaker 6: I've got to get my Chinese food. And the officer just,
- 10:05Speaker 6: you know, just said, I'm sorry, but this is the way.
- 10:09Speaker 6: But that was the biggest challenge the whole year.
- 10:12Speaker 2: So just know, if you have ordered food from anywhere,
- 10:15Speaker 2: we're giving you fair warning that the Dick Henderson Bridge
- 10:18Speaker 2: is going to be closed Sunday night about 830 or so.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So you need to make arrangements to get your crab rangoon. OK,
- 10:25Speaker 2: because it is going to be closed from about 830
- 10:28Speaker 2: till about 1030. So please plan accordingly, Jim.
- 10:33Speaker 6: Exactly, and believe me when I say at 9.15, there
- 10:37Speaker 6: will be a warning shot allowing people to know because
- 10:41Speaker 6: 15 minutes from then, at 9.25, we'll throw the switch
- 10:45Speaker 6: to turn all the lights off on the bridge, and
- 10:48Speaker 6: at 9.30, we'll have about an 18 to 20-minute show
- 10:52Speaker 6: that will blow you away. It really will. It's a
- 10:55Speaker 6: fun time, and... And again, it's something that two communities
- 10:59Speaker 6: get together to make sure everybody enjoys themselves on a
- 11:03Speaker 6: Sunday night in Kanawha Valley. All right.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Before we let you go and before we recap this
- 11:09Speaker 2: whole thing, I do want to mention this to you.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And we'll probably have you back on to talk about
- 11:14Speaker 2: it in the next couple of days. And we'll have
- 11:15Speaker 2: you back again. But Boomtown Days are coming up, right?
- 11:19Speaker 6: A week from this Saturday, September 12th, Boomtown Days are scheduled.
- 11:24Speaker 6: One of the highlights is the annual Nitro Antique Car
- 11:27Speaker 6: Club car show. About 100, 150 cars will be out
- 11:31Speaker 6: on 2nd Avenue. Plus, we will have kids games. We
- 11:36Speaker 6: will have professional wrestling on 21st Street. We have bands
- 11:40Speaker 6: throughout the day, the Barnholler Boys, the Velvet Brothers. and
- 11:43Speaker 6: also Hair Supply from down in.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Your old Neffwood.
- 11:46Speaker 6: Yeah, that's my boys. They will be performing. Your colleague
- 11:51Speaker 6: Steve Bishop is the master of ceremonies all day. We've
- 11:55Speaker 6: got about 35 or 40 vendors, food trucks. It's kind
- 12:00Speaker 6: of the homecoming for the city of Nitro, for the
- 12:04Speaker 6: boomtown city of Nitro, and we'll have a parade. At
- 12:08Speaker 6: 10 o'clock, coming down Route 25 there from Pickens Road,
- 12:13Speaker 6: the First Avenue. So just a fun time had by all,
- 12:16Speaker 6: but that is Boomtown Days on 12th of September.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And I will have you on next week. Remind me
- 12:23Speaker 2: to remind you to remind me that I'll have you
- 12:25Speaker 2: on the show next week. By the way, I have
- 12:26Speaker 2: been voluntold, but I'll be driving a station vehicle during
- 12:29Speaker 2: that parade, so I will be seeing you then.
- 12:33Speaker 6: David, it's always a pleasure to be in your company,
- 12:35Speaker 6: my friend. You're a professional pronunciator at its best. All right.
- 12:38Speaker 2: So, again, the activities this coming Sunday night, and they're
- 12:42Speaker 2: going to shut down the Dick Henderson Bridge. that connects
- 12:45Speaker 2: Nitro to St.
- 12:47Speaker 6: Albans.
- 12:47Speaker 2: They'll shut down the bridge about 9, well, about 8.30,
- 12:50Speaker 2: I guess, and then everybody will gather on the bridge,
- 12:52Speaker 2: a couple thousand people. And it is really, really cool
- 12:56Speaker 2: to see because you get everybody hanging out on the
- 12:59Speaker 2: bridge there, and they're shooting the fireworks off of the
- 13:01Speaker 2: boat ramp there. And with the river and everything, Brian
- 13:05Speaker 2: Hughes says the weather's going to be great. Make plans
- 13:07Speaker 2: to be there. Also make plans to get your Chinese
- 13:10Speaker 2: food needs taken care.
- 13:12Speaker 6: Of ahead of time. All right. Thank you, David. Thank
- 13:16Speaker 6: you very much.
- 13:17Speaker 2: All right. Joe Stevens, appreciate it, man. We'll talk to
- 13:19Speaker 2: you next week about Boomtown Days.
- 13:20Speaker 1: How's that?
- 13:21Speaker 6: See you, buddy.
- 13:22Speaker 2: All right. Joe Stevens from the city of Nitro. And, again,
- 13:26Speaker 2: everything happening Sunday nights prior to Labor Day. About 830
- 13:30Speaker 2: or so, they'll shut down the bridge there that links
- 13:32Speaker 2: the communities of Nitro and St. Albans to Dick Henderson Bridge.
- 13:36Speaker 2: So plan accordingly if you are ordering Chinese food or
- 13:40Speaker 2: any other foods online. Just plan accordingly. About 830, they're
- 13:43Speaker 2: going to shut it down. About 1030, it'll open back up.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And the two communities or anybody that wants to come
- 13:49Speaker 2: out and check out some fireworks to celebrate the Labor Day,
- 13:51Speaker 2: the Labor Day holiday Sunday night on the Dick Henderson Bridge,
- 13:55Speaker 2: which the bridge will be shut down to vehicular traffic.
- 13:58Speaker 2: And a couple thousand people show up for this thing.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So you. Should be one of them. But Dave Allen's
- 14:04Speaker 2: show on 580 Live brought to you by Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Birds continue on the road all this week in Lexington.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Then they go to High Point after that. They'll return
- 14:13Speaker 2: home to Go-Mart Ballpark on September 11th. Check out DirtyBirdsBaseball.com.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And on the midday show yesterday, I had Jay Silverman
- 14:20Speaker 2: from the Dirty Birds on, and I got him out of,
- 14:24Speaker 2: you know, trying to put out about 3 million lights
- 14:28Speaker 2: over there because they're already getting ready for the Solango
- 14:31Speaker 2: Law light the night. And when you put that many
- 14:34Speaker 2: lights out, You can imagine it takes a little time
- 14:36Speaker 2: to do that. So anyway, we'll be giving you more
- 14:38Speaker 2: information about that once the season comes to an end.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It is 922.

- 17:18Speaker 2: After a lot of back and forth, it looks like
- 17:19Speaker 2: we will have a new Kanawha County Commissioner to replace
- 17:22Speaker 2: Lance Wheeler, who resigned to take over the Kanawha County
- 17:25Speaker 2: Emergency Ambulance Service. His name is Austin Gessel, and he's
- 17:28Speaker 2: going to be sworn in at noon today, and he
- 17:30Speaker 2: joins us this morning in the General Construction Studios. Good morning, sir.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Welcome to the show, and congratulations.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you, Dave.
- 17:35Speaker 12: Thank you for having me, and I will say real quick,
- 17:37Speaker 12: I was going to give you some cane about being
- 17:38Speaker 12: a Cowboys fan, but I guess one of my commissioners
- 17:41Speaker 12: around me are also a Cowboys fan, Ben Salenga. So
- 17:43Speaker 12: I have to be careful now and not give you
- 17:44Speaker 12: a little too much cane.
- 17:46Speaker 2: We appreciate that. Now, you're going to be sworn in
- 17:48Speaker 2: later today. Noon, is that when it is? You're going
- 17:50Speaker 2: to be sworn in. And I understand that you are
- 17:52Speaker 2: going to be the youngest county commissioner in the history
- 17:55Speaker 2: of the county.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 17:56Speaker 6: Yes, yes.
- 17:57Speaker 12: And actually, there's a conversation trying to see if I'm
- 17:59Speaker 12: possibly the youngest county commissioner in the state right now.
- 18:01Speaker 2: And how old are you?
- 18:02Speaker 12: I'm 27 years old. I'm honored to be in this position.
- 18:05Speaker 12: I'm happy the executive committee approved. put me in this
- 18:07Speaker 12: opportunity as well, too. And I'm eager to work for
- 18:10Speaker 12: Kanawha County. A lot to learn, short endeavor, but man,
- 18:13Speaker 12: I'm ready for this and I'm ready to support Kanawha County.
- 18:15Speaker 2: So how are you feeling about this whole thing? Because
- 18:18Speaker 2: we're going to get into the story. It's kind of
- 18:19Speaker 2: been an up and down type thing, but today it
- 18:21Speaker 2: all becomes real, I guess, at 12 o'clock. And if
- 18:23Speaker 2: you're sworn in at 12, 1201, you're officially a county
- 18:26Speaker 2: commissioner and your phone's going to start ringing. You know that, right?
- 18:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 18:29Speaker 2: People, you know, talking about something or another. But how
- 18:32Speaker 2: are you feeling about the whole thing?
- 18:33Speaker 3: Well, my phone call, that's not a bad thing. I
- 18:35Speaker 3: want people to trust me.
- 18:36Speaker 12: You know, a lot of people bring up the point
- 18:38Speaker 12: of my age, saying, age, you know, what's this? But
- 18:41Speaker 12: just let them know I have a lot of experience
- 18:43Speaker 12: I bring to the table. Like what Commissioner Salengo said
- 18:45Speaker 12: the other day, I bring a new perspective, new perspective
- 18:48Speaker 12: of a generation that sometimes may think their voice isn't heard.
- 18:50Speaker 12: And so I'm honored to represent And also, you know,
- 18:53Speaker 12: I'm the only Republican on the commission, too. I think
- 18:55Speaker 12: that's important that if I did, let's say, wasn't a
- 18:58Speaker 12: part of this and let's say, you know, I did
- 18:59Speaker 12: step down or something. Republicans wouldn't have an opportunity to
- 19:02Speaker 12: have a representative until probably the general election. So I'm
- 19:05Speaker 12: happy to represent the Republicans. I'm happy to represent Kanawha County.
- 19:08Speaker 12: And ultimately, too, now, since we have a third commissioner,
- 19:12Speaker 12: we will have a quorum if something, God forbid, if
- 19:14Speaker 12: something happens to Ben Slinger or Natalie Tennant. And then
- 19:16Speaker 12: that means ultimately Kanawha County business goes to a halt
- 19:19Speaker 12: if something happens. So I'm honored to kind of keep
- 19:22Speaker 12: the boat afloat.
- 19:23Speaker 2: So for those who don't know you, give us the
- 19:24Speaker 2: bio on Austin Guest.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Sure.
- 19:26Speaker 12: Graduated St. Albans 2017. Graduated Washington State University. Crossed the
- 19:30Speaker 12: river 2021. Got married in Berry Hills Country Club 22.
- 19:34Speaker 12: Bought a house in 24. What that means is I'm
- 19:36Speaker 12: a Kanawha County native.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Home, born and raised.
- 19:39Speaker 12: I love Kanawha County. Ultimately, the reason why I even
- 19:41Speaker 12: got into Kanawha helping the community and supporting communities because
- 19:45Speaker 12: of what Kanawha County has done for me.
- 19:46Speaker 3: I love St. Albans. I love Nitro, Crosslanes.
- 19:50Speaker 12: I love everywhere. And they're all good people here. I'm
- 19:53Speaker 12: beyond excited to kind of represent them. And for five months,
- 19:57Speaker 12: short endeavor, but we're going to make the five months
- 19:59Speaker 12: very fruitful.
- 19:59Speaker 2: So I had Austin Gassel again, who will be sworn
- 20:01Speaker 2: in later today as the new Kanawha County Commissioner of
- 20:04Speaker 2: a Dave Allen Show and 580 Live brought to you
- 20:06Speaker 2: in part by Pinnacle Consultants. When environmental questions come up
- 20:08Speaker 2: at a building, Pinnacle is Provides clear answers specializing in asbestos, lead, mold,
- 20:12Speaker 2: and indoor air quality issues with accredited lab testing based

- 20:18Speaker 2: helping you understand your environment because what you don't know
- 20:21Speaker 2: can't hurt you. So now your name was one of three, Austin,
- 20:23Speaker 2: that was submitted to the commission to replace Lance Wheeler. you,
- 20:28Speaker 2: Edward Burgess, and Jared Page. Now, Jared is the Republican
- 20:32Speaker 2: nominee for the job, having won in the primary. He'll
- 20:35Speaker 2: now move on to the general. He does have opposition.
- 20:37Speaker 2: And about an hour before the commission meeting last week,
- 20:40Speaker 2: both you and Mr. Burgess sent letters to Commission President
- 20:43Speaker 2: Ben Salango and Commissioner Natalie Tennant saying that you would
- 20:46Speaker 2: not serve if they chose you. Now, I'm asking you
- 20:48Speaker 2: to speak for you, not for the other gentleman. Why
- 20:51Speaker 2: did you do that, and then why did you change
- 20:53Speaker 2: your mind?
- 20:53Speaker 12: So, first of all, Jared did win the election in April,
- 20:56Speaker 12: and us Republicans voted him to represent us. And so
- 21:00Speaker 12: when the seat was vacant, we made an election in April.
- 21:03Speaker 12: So we said he earned that ability to represent us. Now, unfortunately,
- 21:07Speaker 12: he didn't win and that's okay. But I'm excited for
- 21:11Speaker 12: it to give him the keys. And January 1st, he's
- 21:13Speaker 12: going to be a fantastic commissioner for Kanawha County. The
- 21:16Speaker 12: times I've spoken to him the past couple of days,
- 21:18Speaker 12: it's impressive and I'm excited. But I was prepared to
- 21:21Speaker 12: step down day one. Thankfully, a great conversation with Jared Page.
- 21:25Speaker 12: He was actually the first person to call me and go, hey,
- 21:28Speaker 12: thank you for your support. Thank you that you're there
- 21:30Speaker 12: for me, but put politics to the side. I know
- 21:33Speaker 12: you wanted me to be picked. Kanawha County needs you.
- 21:35Speaker 12: Because again, remember about a year and a half ago,
- 21:37Speaker 12: what we saw in Berkeley County, when they had that
- 21:39Speaker 12: commission issue, payroll wasn't paid and they lost a lot
- 21:43Speaker 12: of grant money. That was disastrous for Berkeley County. And
- 21:46Speaker 12: he was like, there is a possibility if you step
- 21:48Speaker 12: down and God forbid something happened to Salenga or Tenant,
- 21:51Speaker 12: we no longer have a quorum. And remember, there's 12
- 21:54Speaker 12: divisions under the commission and there's 400 workers under. So
- 21:58Speaker 12: The county just goes to complete dead halt. So he said,
- 22:00Speaker 12: serve these four or five months. Kanawha County needs it.
- 22:03Speaker 12: Put politics to the side. And I appreciate it. Ben
- 22:05Speaker 12: Selingo also called me. We had a wonderful conversation. He
- 22:08Speaker 12: also said the same thing, basically, like, Austin, we need
- 22:11Speaker 12: a quorum. And there is a chance something happened like
- 22:14Speaker 12: Berkeley County would happen here as well. So after I
- 22:17Speaker 12: was kind of painted the picture. Understood the process. I
- 22:20Speaker 12: was more than happy to serve.
- 22:21Speaker 2: So now you will, as you mentioned earlier, you'll be
- 22:23Speaker 2: the only Republican on the county commission. Both Ben Salingo
- 22:26Speaker 2: and Natalie Tennant are Democrats. How do you feel about that?
- 22:29Speaker 12: Well, of course, that means I have to work bipartisanly.
- 22:31Speaker 12: I think that's fine for Kanawha County. A lot of
- 22:34Speaker 12: stuff to learn. I believe that supporting an economy is bipartisan,
- 22:39Speaker 12: supporting a county. And there's a lot of great projects happening.
- 22:42Speaker 12: For example, Shawnee Sports Complex are adding, I think, four
- 22:44Speaker 12: new soccer fields.
- 22:45Speaker 3: That's awesome. new gun range.
- 22:47Speaker 12: And I don't think the gun range is going to
- 22:49Speaker 12: ask who's the Republican, who's the Democrat. I don't think
- 22:51Speaker 12: the soccer field is going to ask who's Republican, who's Democrat.
- 22:53Speaker 12: So I'm ready and equal to work for bipartisan Kanawha County.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Now, you're going to be completing the term of Lance Wheeler, who,
- 23:00Speaker 2: as we said, resigned to become the new head of
- 23:02Speaker 2: the Ambulance Service Authority here in Kanawha County. Talk about
- 23:05Speaker 2: taking over for Lance Wheeler. Talk about, you know.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Well, it's an honor. Lance was a fantastic.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Big shoes.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Very big shoes.
- 23:11Speaker 12: Lance was a fantastic commissioner, did a lot of good
- 23:14Speaker 12: for Kanawha County.
- 23:14Speaker 3: And I'm very eager to see him as a senator. Um,
- 23:18Speaker 3: Lance taught me a lot.
- 23:19Speaker 12: Uh, now we haven't had a ton of conversations, but
- 23:22Speaker 12: we we've called a little bit in the past week
- 23:23Speaker 12: or two and just to talk, especially, especially after what
- 23:27Speaker 12: happened and stuff. And he was actually one of the
- 23:29Speaker 12: other people that called me and said, Austin, listen, you
- 23:31Speaker 12: need to definitely put Kanawha County first right now. I
- 23:34Speaker 12: had about probably when I, between the hours of last week, Thursday,
- 23:38Speaker 12: 4 PM and 10 PM, 150 phone calls.
- 23:40Speaker 3: I'm not lying.
- 23:41Speaker 12: Um, which honor, I mean, people, you know, people trust
- 23:46Speaker 12: me and talk to me and stuff, but it was
- 23:48Speaker 12: a responsibility. And I do have heavy shoes to fill
- 23:51Speaker 12: for Lance. And I'm eager to try to fill those
- 23:53Speaker 12: shoes for five months.
- 23:54Speaker 3: And we'll go from there.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Now, as a county commissioner, As you mentioned, you're only
- 23:59Speaker 2: going to be serving for a couple of months. You
- 24:01Speaker 2: talked about the projects that are going on. What do
- 24:03Speaker 2: you hope to accomplish in your time on the commission?
- 24:06Speaker 12: Well, let me get my feet wet first. I don't
- 24:08Speaker 12: want to make any promises because, again, my endeavor is short.
- 24:11Speaker 12: But all I promise is Kanawha County's objective is, number one,
- 24:14Speaker 12: to make sure the county kind of keeps going. County
- 24:16Speaker 12: operations keep going. Payroll happens. That's the big, big thing
- 24:19Speaker 12: commissioners need to do. Now, there's other projects happening and
- 24:22Speaker 12: such that I haven't been briefed on yet. But we're
- 24:25Speaker 12: going to look into those. We're going to do everything
- 24:26Speaker 12: we can. And these next five months, we're going to
- 24:28Speaker 12: do some great things.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Plus, Kanawha County is still cleaning up after those devastating floods.
- 24:33Speaker 8: There is.
- 24:33Speaker 2: We have areas like Campbell's Creek and places like that.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:36Speaker 12: September 4th, I think, is the last day we're doing
- 24:37Speaker 12: the flood cleanup. So make sure if you guys have
- 24:40Speaker 12: any flood damage to put it on the side and
- 24:42Speaker 12: then we'll come and clean it up for you all.
- 24:43Speaker 2: And again, it does, as we've talked before with Commissioner
- 24:47Speaker 2: Solango and others, it does have to be placed to
- 24:49Speaker 2: the curb. They are not allowed to come onto private
- 24:51Speaker 2: property to do that.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes.
- 24:53Speaker 6: So.
- 24:54Speaker 2: I'm going to ask you, do you have political aspirations
- 24:57Speaker 2: in the future after you wrap up your time in
- 25:00Speaker 2: the commissioner? Have you thought about that? I mean, I
- 25:02Speaker 2: know you've been around politics for some time. You're going
- 25:07Speaker 2: to finish out this term, okay? What's the future look
- 25:11Speaker 2: like after that?
- 25:12Speaker 3: Well– I will.
- 25:15Speaker 12: I'll just tell you now, after my endeavor in January,
- 25:18Speaker 12: I would love, love, love if I can have a
- 25:20Speaker 12: chance to being in a councilman at St.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Albans.
- 25:23Speaker 12: That would be first priority is being a councilman, maybe
- 25:26Speaker 12: council at large. We'll see maybe way down the road.
- 25:29Speaker 12: We can maybe have a better conversation about house or
- 25:31Speaker 12: house or something in the future. But right now, after
- 25:34Speaker 12: my endeavor, the objective probably is for St. Albans City
- 25:37Speaker 12: Council for a term and two. And we'll see what
- 25:39Speaker 12: happens goes on from there.
- 25:40Speaker 1: But yes.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I just I'm kind of curious about that, because you
- 25:43Speaker 2: said you are a relatively young guy, youngest county. You'll
- 25:46Speaker 2: be the youngest county commissioner in definitely Kanawha County, maybe
- 25:49Speaker 2: the whole state. They're going to try to look in
- 25:52Speaker 2: to that. And you're a bright young man. And I
- 25:53Speaker 2: know that you've got a very bright future ahead of you.
- 25:58Speaker 2: So no matter what that is, I'm sure you'll do it.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I'm sure you'll do a great job.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 26:04Speaker 2: I understand that you are flipping a coin for a
- 26:07Speaker 2: big high school football.
- 26:08Speaker 5: Game, right?
- 26:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 12: So actually, it's going to be me and Ben Salengo
- 26:11Speaker 12: are going to the St. Albans Nitro Game Friday and
- 26:13Speaker 12: are doing the coin flip. So I guess they're going
- 26:14Speaker 12: to say, you know, Commissioner Austin Gessel, Commissioner Ben Salengo,
- 26:17Speaker 12: and we'll be out there for the coin flip. I'll
- 26:19Speaker 12: probably be on the sidelines with St. Albans and cheering
- 26:22Speaker 12: the Red Dragons on. Vince Lago might be on the
- 26:24Speaker 12: Nitro side cheering for the Wildcats. So we'll give each
- 26:27Speaker 12: other some cane, whoever wins or loses.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Well, look, I mean, Solango's team got it handed to them. No,
- 26:32Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding about that. No, wait
- 26:35Speaker 2: a minute. No, I was talking about the St. Albans
- 26:37Speaker 2: game last week.
- 26:37Speaker 10: St.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Albans played Shady, right? Oh, yeah, that's right.
- 26:39Speaker 6: Shady.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Shady won, right?
- 26:41Speaker 3: Shady won.
- 26:43Speaker 2: That's Salango's team. I'm sorry. I got that backwards.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Well, never mind.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I won't be saying anything to him. Well, he's an
- 26:49Speaker 2: alma mater. That's his alma mater.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Hey, St.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Albans actually played pretty good. We got a couple touchdowns.
- 26:53Speaker 6: St.
- 26:53Speaker 12: Albans actually looks reasonably a pretty well team. I think
- 26:56Speaker 12: the coach is a great coach and get a couple
- 26:58Speaker 12: wins this year and build some momentum.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Well, I'm just glad that they have a team this
- 27:01Speaker 2: year because I interviewed him a month or two ago.
- 27:04Speaker 2: there was a very real possibility that St. Albans High
- 27:07Speaker 2: School was not going to have a football team because
- 27:08Speaker 2: they didn't have the numbers out.
- 27:09Speaker 12: I think they ended up having about, what, 31, 32 players,
- 27:12Speaker 12: if I'm correct. So they have a team and a
- 27:14Speaker 12: little more. So let's see if they can bear some
- 27:16Speaker 12: fruit this season.
- 27:17Speaker 8: All right.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But, yeah, you are going to be flipping the coin,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I understand, for the Battle of the Bridge.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I am. It's either going to be
- 27:23Speaker 3: me or Ben.
- 27:23Speaker 8: Okay.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Well, you'll be there for it.
- 27:25Speaker 12: Yeah, if it's me, I'm going to have to practice
- 27:27Speaker 12: flipping a coin because I know for a fact I
- 27:29Speaker 12: would probably mess it up.
- 27:30Speaker 3: So I definitely need to prepare a little bit.
- 27:32Speaker 2: I think you got this.
- 27:34Speaker 9: All right.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So I'm going to give you the last couple of minutes, Austin,
- 27:36Speaker 2: just to thank anyone you wish.
- 27:39Speaker 1: It's your time.
- 27:41Speaker 2: When we do interviews for political campaigns, I always call
- 27:43Speaker 2: it the last 30, the final 30, but I'm not
- 27:46Speaker 2: going to time you. But I'll just give you the
- 27:47Speaker 2: opportunity to thank whoever you want for this appointment.
- 27:49Speaker 12: Well, first off, I want to thank the commission team.
- 27:51Speaker 12: That's important. I come in and I don't have to
- 27:54Speaker 12: earn respect. They come in, they say, hello, commissioner. And
- 27:57Speaker 12: they guide me, they advise me, the team around the commission.
- 28:01Speaker 12: Like I said, there's 12 divisions, 400 people. that there
- 28:04Speaker 12: is everything's dotted to an i across to a t
- 28:07Speaker 12: and it's impressive and now that i'm in that system
- 28:10Speaker 12: a little bit they're patient they want to explain things
- 28:12Speaker 12: there's a standard that commissioner's office wants to put up
- 28:15Speaker 12: and they're trying to help me get to that standard
- 28:17Speaker 12: i'm very eager and excited i want to thank a
- 28:19Speaker 12: lot of friends and family and stuff too that's been
- 28:21Speaker 12: very supportive a lot of you know my wife my
- 28:24Speaker 12: wife is man this has been a change for her
- 28:26Speaker 12: this past week you know she calls me and goes
- 28:28Speaker 12: wow you're all over the news now and that's that
- 28:30Speaker 12: was a change for her and I hope she's listening
- 28:32Speaker 12: right now. She's a very introverted woman. But it's just
- 28:35Speaker 12: a lot of good support around me.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I'm grateful.
- 28:37Speaker 12: And honestly, with how much support I have, I feel
- 28:40Speaker 12: like I owe it to Kanawha County to do everything
- 28:42Speaker 12: I can these next five months.
- 28:43Speaker 3: So I'm eager.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Well, we wish you the best of luck. And I
- 28:45Speaker 2: have an open-door policy with all three county commissioners going
- 28:48Speaker 2: back to Wheeler and, of course, Commissioner Salango and Commissioner Tennant.
- 28:52Speaker 2: They're always welcome on the show. And as I always said,
- 28:54Speaker 2: don't always wait on me to reach out to you.
- 28:57Speaker 2: If you've got something that's going on, you reach out
- 28:58Speaker 2: to me because I like to have you on. And
- 29:00Speaker 2: I'd like to have you, you know, the commissioners on
- 29:02Speaker 2: to kind of, you know, talk to people. And I'm
- 29:04Speaker 2: not going to put you on the spot today, but
- 29:06Speaker 2: once you are sworn in, have you come in, take
- 29:09Speaker 2: some phone calls, take some texts and things of that nature.
- 29:11Speaker 2: So 12 o'clock today. That's what it is at the courthouse.
- 29:14Speaker 12: Yep, at the courthouse in the special courtroom, if I'm correct.
- 29:17Speaker 12: And it's on.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 12: But hopefully it's open to the public. So if anyone
- 29:21Speaker 12: wants to come and stuff, they have to go to
- 29:22Speaker 12: security and stuff. It'll be a good time.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Well, congratulations again, sir.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Thank you, Dave.

- 32:37Speaker 6: 304-935-500.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Texas, never underestimate the power of some good Chinese foods. Bridges,
- 32:42Speaker 2: be darned. That's a texter.
- 32:45Speaker 6: All right.
- 32:45Speaker 2: So, you know, every now and then we'll have like
- 32:47Speaker 2: one moment from a broadcast day, either on this show
- 32:51Speaker 2: or on Metro News Midday, that just kind of sticks
- 32:53Speaker 2: out as the moment of the day. This one has
- 32:54Speaker 2: got to be it. I was talking to Joe Stevens,
- 32:55Speaker 2: in case you missed it. Joe Stevens, City of Nitro,
- 32:58Speaker 2: earlier in the show, and he was talking about this
- 33:00Speaker 2: is the fourth year that for the Sunday before Labor Day,
- 33:04Speaker 2: Sunday night, they shut down the Dick Henderson Bridge there
- 33:08Speaker 2: that connects Nitro and St.
- 33:09Speaker 5: Albans.
- 33:09Speaker 2: So people can come together, a couple thousand people, be
- 33:12Speaker 2: out on the bridge to watch the fireworks. And he
- 33:15Speaker 2: said that in the first couple of years. Somebody complained
- 33:18Speaker 2: because they couldn't get to their Chinese food, you know,
- 33:20Speaker 2: that they had ordered. And so, yeah, you're right. Never
- 33:24Speaker 2: underestimate the power of some good Chinese food. Bridges be darned.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I enjoy it. I will say this. I would probably,
- 33:32Speaker 2: you know, kill a guy for some crab ring again.
- 33:34Speaker 6: Not literally.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Not literally. I'm just saying it's good crab rangoon. Yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 2: I mean, it sounds good right now, but everything sounds
- 33:42Speaker 2: good because I'm hungry and I'm always hungry. Texas, Dave,
- 33:45Speaker 2: have you seen the Trump administration trying to get out
- 33:47Speaker 2: of paying death benefits to the soldiers who have died
- 33:50Speaker 2: in the Iran war? Yeah, they're trying to reclassify a
- 33:52Speaker 2: few soldiers deaths to say they weren't due to the
- 33:55Speaker 2: Iran war. So just a friendly reminder to everyone listening,
- 33:58Speaker 2: especially those in the military. You're on the decoy plane,
- 34:01Speaker 2: says a texter. Let me see here. How can we
- 34:10Speaker 2: expand the county commission? There is a ridiculously small number,
- 34:14Speaker 2: and he points out what happens if two are absent.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Five to seven would be better. Well, I mean, that
- 34:20Speaker 2: would require the county to make that decision. You know,
- 34:25Speaker 2: Kanawha is the largest county in the state, and we
- 34:27Speaker 2: have three. There are other counties that have more, as
- 34:30Speaker 2: texture said, five to seven. You know, I don't know.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I mean, it would have to be they would have
- 34:34Speaker 2: to take the pulse of the voters, I think, just
- 34:36Speaker 2: to see how they.
- 34:38Speaker 14: Feel about it.
- 34:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 34:41Speaker 2: I mean, I think in my opinion, you know, it
- 34:43Speaker 2: seems to work pretty well. But it is a good
- 34:45Speaker 2: point that that if we only have two commissioners and
- 34:51Speaker 2: not a lot, you know, can get done. And so
- 34:53Speaker 2: I'm glad that we have. The commissioner in place now,
- 34:56Speaker 2: Austin Gessel, will be sworn in later today. I don't know.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That's for something for somebody else much smarter than I
- 35:04Speaker 2: to come up with. The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce
- 35:07Speaker 2: Business Summit continues today at the Greenbrier. Now, word is
- 35:11Speaker 2: there will be some sort of major announcement coming from
- 35:14Speaker 2: there today. Now, people have speculated a huge data center
- 35:18Speaker 2: is some sort of a major jobs announcement, maybe a
- 35:22Speaker 2: major construction project. I'm kind of leaning that way. I mean,
- 35:27Speaker 2: not saying that a new data center won't be announced,
- 35:29Speaker 2: but sources there on the ground tell me that, and
- 35:34Speaker 2: maybe I'm wrong, that there's going to be an announcement.
- 35:36Speaker 2: And I'm told around 1115, 1130 or so today is
- 35:40Speaker 2: when it's going to happen. Of course, they'll have it
- 35:41Speaker 2: for you on talk line. I am going to I'm
- 35:44Speaker 2: going to go with some of my sources that are
- 35:46Speaker 2: telling me that there's going to be a major construction
- 35:48Speaker 2: announcement today. I'll let Wilson and Meadows handle that for
- 35:51Speaker 2: you during their visit with you coming up at 10.06
- 35:55Speaker 2: from there. But anyway, Meadows and Wilson will be live
- 35:58Speaker 2: from TalkLine or with TalkLine from the Greenbrier coming up
- 36:01Speaker 2: at 10.06. Expected to hear from U.S. Senators Shelley Moore
- 36:04Speaker 2: Capito and Jim Justice, as well as Marshall President Brad Smith.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Conrad Bastin of Antero. And there is a small business
- 36:12Speaker 2: panel that is coming up today as well as part
- 36:15Speaker 2: of all the fun there. And again, Wilson Meadows are
- 36:18Speaker 2: live there starting at 10.06. And at least one of them,
- 36:22Speaker 2: if maybe both, will join me on midday. Amanda and
- 36:26Speaker 2: I coming up at 12.24 today. to discuss that. But
- 36:30Speaker 2: Dave Allen's show on 580 Live is brought to you
- 36:32Speaker 2: in part by Morgan & Morgan. With more than $ 20
- 36:34Speaker 2: billion recovered, they believe that when you're injured, you deserve more.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Let me see.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Got some more text. Page put these guys up to
- 36:46Speaker 2: doing what they'd done. It's dirty politics. Simple. Well, I mean,
- 36:51Speaker 2: you got to have some sort of proof of that.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I mean, I do know that Jared Page was one
- 36:55Speaker 2: of the folks that called Austin Gessel and congratulated him.
- 37:00Speaker 2: I do know that, but I don't know what goes
- 37:03Speaker 2: on behind the scenes. I'm not an insider or whatever,
- 37:05Speaker 2: but I had Jared Page on the show last Friday,
- 37:08Speaker 2: and if Mr. Page wants back on, I haven't heard
- 37:10Speaker 2: from Commissioner Natalie Tennant during all this. I know she's
- 37:12Speaker 2: been traveling a little bit, I think. I talked to
- 37:14Speaker 2: her last week, so I'll be glad to have her
- 37:16Speaker 2: on the show tomorrow. I'm just glad, again, I am
- 37:19Speaker 2: just glad that we got it taken care of officially
- 37:24Speaker 2: come 12 noon or so today. We will swear in
- 37:27Speaker 2: a new county commissioner. That part of it does make
- 37:30Speaker 2: me happy. Text Dave, our military is in the worst
- 37:34Speaker 2: shape it's ever been in, getting worse every day. Other
- 37:37Speaker 2: countries no longer see us as a superpower.
- 37:40Speaker 1: We were.
- 37:40Speaker 2: What in the world is going on? Well, to get
- 37:43Speaker 2: some context there, I would need to know more about that. Text,
- 37:47Speaker 2: just wanted to let people know Canada is West Virginia's
- 37:50Speaker 2: number one trading partner. They have a lot of energy
- 37:52Speaker 2: investments in their state. Now Trump is trying to Destroy that,
- 37:56Speaker 2: according to a texter. Good show, Dave. Just some positive
- 38:03Speaker 2: feedback would be good, says the texter. Okay. I mean,
- 38:08Speaker 2: I guess it's positive feedback toward me, I guess. That's weird.
- 38:13Speaker 2: I appreciate it, though. Like, I have done this show,
- 38:17Speaker 2: you know, for six years and a few months, and
- 38:20Speaker 2: I enjoy this. I do enjoy being in it. It's
- 38:23Speaker 2: not a real job. I mean, it's really not. I
- 38:25Speaker 2: have fun. Text, one request.
- 38:31Speaker 10: For Mr.
- 38:32Speaker 2: Gessel. Please do not allow certain politicians to attempt to
- 38:36Speaker 2: strong arm or intimidate you into giving in to them,
- 38:39Speaker 2: according to a texter. Text, expand the commission question mark.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Name one section of government at any level that has
- 38:46Speaker 2: ever gotten better by getting bigger.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Think, people.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Later today at noon, Metro News Midday, powered by Salango Law,
- 38:54Speaker 2: 13 News, and tonight live anchor Amanda Barron and me. Again,
- 38:57Speaker 2: we'll check in with the Greenbrier with what's going on
- 39:00Speaker 2: with the Business Summit. Major announcement scheduled around 11.15 or 11.30
- 39:04Speaker 2: or so. By the time we go on the air,
- 39:05Speaker 2: we'll know what that announcement is. So we'll talk about it.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Our friends from the West Virginia Lottery are going to
- 39:10Speaker 2: stop by. Plus, Jay Phillips from Seed Sower is here.
- 39:12Speaker 2: Jeff Jenkins with the news. And, of course, Open Line
- 39:14Speaker 2: West Virginia. Metro News Midday with 13 News. And tonight,
- 39:17Speaker 2: live anchor Amanda Barron and me coming up at noon today,
- 39:20Speaker 2: powered by Selene Goldall. Now, on this show tomorrow, it
- 39:23Speaker 2: is Friday, which means we get a visit from Angie
- 39:24Speaker 2: Gillenwater from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association with this week's Adopt Me,
- 39:28Speaker 2: Please Pet of the Week. Be interested. to see, get
- 39:31Speaker 2: her take on how everything with kegs for canines went.
- 39:33Speaker 2: We had that event this past Saturday at the red carpet,
- 39:37Speaker 2: so got to get a feel on that from Angie. Also,
- 39:40Speaker 2: we told you yesterday on the show that Tony Hazlett
- 39:42Speaker 2: has announced his retirement from the Charleston Police Department. That
- 39:46Speaker 2: retirement is effective tomorrow. He will join us on the
- 39:48Speaker 2: show tomorrow. And Tony the tailor is going to stop
- 39:51Speaker 2: by the show tomorrow as well. It's always entertaining when Mr.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Perenzino is here. That is all coming up on tomorrow's show.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Hoppy has a new commentary. And you can read it
- 40:02Speaker 2: at WVMetroNews.com. And he's also going to drop a new
- 40:05Speaker 2: State of Minds tonight as well. Now, we'd hoped to
- 40:08Speaker 2: have Hoppy on Midday today, but they will be recording
- 40:12Speaker 2: a new Three Guys today, so he is unavailable for
- 40:15Speaker 2: the show. I was texting with Hoppy earlier. I said,
- 40:16Speaker 2: it's amazing how you old retired guys lose all— You know,
- 40:21Speaker 2: lose all reality when it comes to time and days,
- 40:24Speaker 2: because I text him yesterday, said, hey, we want to
- 40:26Speaker 2: have you on a show. He said, no problem. And
- 40:27Speaker 2: then this morning he sends me a text that says, oops, forgot.
- 40:31Speaker 2: And I just had to mess with him a little bit, man,
- 40:33Speaker 2: and just say, Hoppy, you old guys, you old retired guys, man,
- 40:36Speaker 2: you you don't know what day it is, you know
- 40:39Speaker 2: what time it is or anything like that. But so anyway,
- 40:42Speaker 2: I don't want to tell you about this state of mind.
- 40:44Speaker 2: So it is a feature on a native of Kingwood.
- 40:48Speaker 2: in Preston County, who was a major player in the
- 40:51Speaker 2: world of business. And when I say a major player,
- 40:54Speaker 2: not just in West Virginia, literally all across the world,
- 40:57Speaker 2: went to Harvard Business School, came out of the coal
- 41:00Speaker 2: industry initially, but then went on to do a lot
- 41:03Speaker 2: of other things. His name was John Boyle. And despite
- 41:06Speaker 2: his major business success, he was in danger of losing
- 41:10Speaker 2: everything due to addiction issues. Now, I am familiar with Mr.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Boyle's story. He wrote a book about it. Definitely looking
- 41:16Speaker 2: forward to his sit-down. with Hoppy on State of Minds.
- 41:19Speaker 2: And again, that will drop this evening on the Metro
- 41:21Speaker 2: News television app. So if you don't have the app,
- 41:24Speaker 2: make sure that you do. Text, oh, no way. Shelley
- 41:30Speaker 2: Capito will be on the radio. Wonder what she'll talk
- 41:32Speaker 2: about being ineffective at doing. I wish I could be
- 41:35Speaker 2: ineffective in my job and still make millions. It is
- 41:38Speaker 2: the American dream, says the texter. I mentioned the Adopt
- 41:42Speaker 2: Me Please Pet of the Week. That's coming up tomorrow, 9.06.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Brought to you by Almost Heaven Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving

- 45:02Speaker 1: Again, I.
- 45:10Speaker 2: I appreciate all that, but I would really probably like
- 45:14Speaker 2: to talk to them about that. But I do appreciate it.
- 45:17Speaker 6: Mr.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Page was on the show last Friday.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Mr.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Page wants on the show. He's more than welcome to

- 45:28Speaker 2: want to tell you a really quick story. You know,
- 45:30Speaker 2: we hear these stories all the time about people. And
- 45:34Speaker 2: their West Virginia connections. And you've heard them and you've
- 45:37Speaker 2: experienced them. You go somewhere where you think there's no
- 45:40Speaker 2: way in heck anybody's going to know who I am
- 45:42Speaker 2: or where I'm from. And you run into somebody with
- 45:45Speaker 2: West Virginia ties or whatever. I got a text on Sunday.
- 45:50Speaker 2: My wife and I were actually doing some early morning
- 45:54Speaker 2: shopping at the grocery store. And I got a text
- 45:57Speaker 2: from Kelly Steele, who is the president of Putnam County Tourism. Kelly,
- 46:02Speaker 2: of course, has been on this show numerous times, and
- 46:04Speaker 2: I served on the board at one point of Putnam
- 46:07Speaker 2: County Tourism. Kelly and her husband, Jeff, are at Mount Rushmore.
- 46:14Speaker 2: And she gets a text, and she texts me, and
- 46:16Speaker 2: she says, you're never going to believe this. Kelly Steele
- 46:20Speaker 2: of Putnam County Tourism and her husband, Jeff, are in
- 46:23Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore today. and they run into Steve Bishop, Bishop
- 46:27Speaker 2: of V100 fame. And the bishop actually called me. He's
- 46:31Speaker 2: on vacation out there this week. He actually called me
- 46:33Speaker 2: a couple days ago and said, you're never going to
- 46:35Speaker 2: guess who I ran into at Mount Rushmore of all places.
- 46:39Speaker 2: And I said, yeah, I think I already know. It
- 46:41Speaker 2: was Kelly and her husband. And so the story is
- 46:44Speaker 2: that they were about to enter the park, and I
- 46:46Speaker 2: guess her husband had on a West Virginia University baseball cap.
- 46:50Speaker 2: And Bishop just saw the cap and yells out, hey,
- 46:54Speaker 2: West Virginia guy. not knowing who he was. And then
- 46:57Speaker 2: they turn around and they realize that Bishop knew Kelly
- 47:00Speaker 2: because Kelly's been on V100 as well. And it's like,
- 47:03Speaker 2: they go all the way to Mount Rushmore and they
- 47:06Speaker 2: run into somebody, not only from West Virginia, but somebody
- 47:10Speaker 2: that was a friend of the program as Kelly is
- 47:13Speaker 2: being president of Putnam County Tourism. I thought that story
- 47:16Speaker 2: just kind of blew me away. When you hear these
- 47:18Speaker 2: stories all the time, you go somewhere and you run into...
- 47:20Speaker 2: Somebody that you weren't expected to see there. Well, apparently
- 47:23Speaker 2: they all hooked up. Okay, that's a bad story. They
- 47:26Speaker 2: all gathered there together today or over the weekend at
- 47:29Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore, of all places.
- 47:31Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 47:31Speaker 2: I just thought that was an interesting story. Text, I
- 47:35Speaker 2: read a poll on dreaded Facebook. All that answered were
- 47:38Speaker 2: 100% against trusting Trump. Others were 100% for. Not one
- 47:42Speaker 2: picked 20 to 50 to 75. Come on, America, says
- 47:44Speaker 2: the texter. Text Dave, on Tuesday, the House adopted a
- 47:51Speaker 2: resolution by a vote of 220 to 192 to denounce
- 47:56Speaker 2: socialism in all forms, with eight Democrats voting with all
- 48:00Speaker 2: Republicans in favor, two Democrats voted present. Tell me again
- 48:03Speaker 2: how the Democrats are still moderates. I read that a
- 48:07Speaker 2: little bit earlier. I read somebody had posted something about
- 48:10Speaker 2: that vote. And to that, I would say, in theory,
- 48:15Speaker 2: this is my opinion. Yes, I'm all about denouncing whatever.
- 48:21Speaker 2: But don't we have other things to worry about other
- 48:24Speaker 2: than symbolic things? I'm just saying I would I mean,
- 48:28Speaker 2: I would prefer I appreciate the thought I would prefer
- 48:31Speaker 2: that our politicos in Washington vote. actually focus on economy
- 48:36Speaker 2: and jobs and things of that nature. Just saying. Just saying.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Get ready for high school football Friday night. We hope
- 48:43Speaker 2: the weather cooperates. As Brian Hughes says, we could be
- 48:45Speaker 2: looking at some late-day storms tomorrow. Our WCHS Game of
- 48:48Speaker 2: the Week is in the land of the Redskins as
- 48:50Speaker 2: Hurricane will host George Washington. Coverage tomorrow night at 7.
- 48:53Speaker 2: And then over on KWS tomorrow, you're home with the
- 48:55Speaker 2: Herbert Hoover Huskies. Hoover will be taking on Winfield at home.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Generals and the Huskies tomorrow night. 96-1 KWS. And college
- 49:02Speaker 2: is not all about WVU and Marshall. There are other games,
- 49:05Speaker 2: including MEC games. Saturday afternoon on 107.3 The Beat, we
- 49:10Speaker 2: will have coverage of West Virginia State traveling to Moon Township,
- 49:13Speaker 2: Pennsylvania to take on Robert Morris. And that is coming
- 49:18Speaker 2: up again on Saturday. on your home of West Virginia
- 49:21Speaker 2: State football they did the coaches show live at the
- 49:23Speaker 2: pitch last night 107.3 the beat back to football just
- 49:27Speaker 2: for a moment particularly WVU I was listening to Ask
- 49:31Speaker 2: the Lawyer with Harvey and Tom Payton which by the
- 49:33Speaker 2: way I think Tom Payton is celebrating a birthday today
- 49:35Speaker 2: I think I saw that somewhere so If that is
- 49:38Speaker 2: the case, Tom Payton, happy birthday. If it's not your birthday,
- 49:41Speaker 2: then it will be at some point. So Harvey and
- 49:45Speaker 2: Tom both on the show today. Harvey calling for the
- 49:49Speaker 2: upset for Coastal Carolina to beat the Mountaineers in Morgantown
- 49:55Speaker 2: on Saturday. Then I had a phone call yesterday. And
- 50:00Speaker 2: I missed what Tom said about that. But Harvey Payton,
- 50:03Speaker 2: and I know nobody's ever going to question Harvey Payton's
- 50:05Speaker 2: loyalty to WVU. He's just calling it like he sees it.
- 50:07Speaker 2: I'm a Cowboy fan. I'm a Marshall fan. And I
- 50:10Speaker 2: can tell you when I think they're going to lose, okay?
- 50:13Speaker 2: But he says Coastal Carolina beats WVU. That's what Harvey said.
- 50:16Speaker 2: I did not have that one. I would not have
- 50:18Speaker 2: predicted that for Mr.
- 50:19Speaker 6: Payton.
- 50:20Speaker 2: I'm sure he's hoping he's wrong, though. So I do
- 50:23Speaker 2: want to remind you that, though, it is a noon
- 50:25Speaker 2: kickoff Saturday in Morgantown for the Mountaineers and Coastal. And,
- 50:28Speaker 2: of course, they're going to be retiring Pat White's No. 5.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And keep in mind that Pat White is a coach
- 50:35Speaker 2: for WVU. So they're going to do the ceremony at
- 50:40Speaker 2: 1145 a.m.
- 50:42Speaker 6: Sharp.
- 50:43Speaker 2: And I say that because I know a lot of
- 50:44Speaker 2: folks are going to be heading up to Morgantown for
- 50:46Speaker 2: the season opener for the Mountaineers in Coastal Carolina. It
- 50:49Speaker 2: is a noon kickoff. This ceremony is going to be
- 50:52Speaker 2: at 1145. And people have said, to me saying, well,
- 50:56Speaker 2: why don't they have this at halftime? Well, because Pat
- 50:58Speaker 2: White is a coach. And coaches tend to be a
- 51:01Speaker 2: little bit busy at halftime. If you don't believe me,
- 51:04Speaker 2: watch some of the interviews that reporters try to get
- 51:07Speaker 2: with them before they head back into the locker room.
- 51:09Speaker 2: They're a little bit busy at halftime. So I say
- 51:11Speaker 2: that if you're going to be tailgating up there, getting
- 51:14Speaker 2: ready for the Mountaineers in Coastal Carolina, this Pat White
- 51:17Speaker 2: ceremony is going to be at 1145. So put down
- 51:21Speaker 2: the mimosas and the hot dogs and the beer and
- 51:23Speaker 2: whatever just for a moment. Get inside the stadium. 1145
- 51:26Speaker 2: is when they are going to do that. Rightfully so.
- 51:29Speaker 2: to retire Pat White's number five. Again, it is a
- 51:33Speaker 2: noon kickoff. And as for my Marshall Thundering Herd, they
- 51:37Speaker 2: travel to Happy Valley to take on Penn State Saturday afternoon.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Speaking of predictions, keep in mind that Northern Dave Wilson
- 51:44Speaker 2: on talk line called for the upset that Marshall will
- 51:47Speaker 2: beat Penn State in Happy Valley. I'm just saying. Hope
- 51:50Speaker 2: he's right. That's the only time I ever hope that
- 51:53Speaker 2: Dave Wilson is right about anything. Wilson Meadows coming up
- 51:55Speaker 2: live from the Greenbrier for the Business Summit 1006. I'll
- 51:58Speaker 2: be back later today with Metro News Midday with 13 News.
- 52:01Speaker 2: And tonight, live anchor Amanda Barron and me, powered by
- 52:03Speaker 2: Selene Goloff. Ryan Nicholson, thank you so much. I will
- 52:06Speaker 2: see you once again tomorrow and then later today as well.
- 52:09Speaker 2: Until then, have fun. I love somebody.
- 52:23Speaker 1: WCHSAL, W243DRFM Charleston, and W283AQ Crosslanes, a WVRC media station.
