Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: A young newsstand boy's report of suspicious activity near a
- 0:03Speaker 1: bank branch sends Nick Carter onto the trail of an
- 0:06Speaker 1: armed payroll robbery. From October 15th, 1944, it is episode
- 0:14Speaker 1: 153 of Nick Carter, Master Detective, The Slingshot Murders. Wounded
- 0:19Speaker 1: in the pursuit, Carter follows a clue supplied by the
- 0:22Speaker 1: boy's slingshot, with Patsy Bowen and Lieutenant Riley drawn into
- 0:27Speaker 1: the investigation. Lon Clark stars as Nick Carter, with Helen
- 0:32Speaker 1: Choate as Patsy Bowen, in a Mutual Broadcasting System presentation
- 0:38Speaker 1: written by Jock McGregor. And now, we return to the
- 0:42Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:54Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 0:55Speaker 3: What is it? It's another case for Nick Carter, master detective.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Yes, it's another case for that most famous of all manhunters.
- 1:06Speaker 4: The detective whose ability at solving crime is unequaled in
- 1:09Speaker 4: the history of detective fiction. Nick Cotter, Master Detective. Presented
- 1:14Speaker 4: by the three great Lin-X home brighteners. Lin-X Clear Gloss,
- 1:18Speaker 4: Lin-X Cream Polish, and Lin-X Self-Polishing Wax. Created by Acme,
- 1:23Speaker 4: America's great producer of Acme quality paints. Today's curious adventure,
- 1:32Speaker 4: The Slingshot Murders, or Nick Carter and the Mystery of
- 1:38Speaker 4: the Broken Window. In just a moment, we'll find out
- 1:46Speaker 4: how Nick Carter solved the mystery of the Slingshot Murders.
- 1:49Speaker 4: But first, here's something worth thinking about. A lovely home
- 1:53Speaker 4: adds to the joy of living. And just as thousands
- 1:56Speaker 4: of American homemakers have brought new beauty to their walls
- 1:58Speaker 4: with Chemtone, the miracle wall finish, so are they learning
- 2:02Speaker 4: that Linex self-polishing wax gives their floors a satiny new
- 2:06Speaker 4: luster without tiresome rubbing. Easily wiped on, Linex Self-Polishing Wax
- 2:11Speaker 4: dries to a tough, elastic finish that resists wear amazingly
- 2:15Speaker 4: because it contains so much genuine carnauba wax with no gum, shellac,
- 2:20Speaker 4: or resin in it to chip or crumble. It resists
- 2:23Speaker 4: water and dirt, too, so that soil is safely removed
- 2:26Speaker 4: from the surface with a damp cloth or mild suds.
- 2:29Speaker 4: And Linex Self-Polishing Wax is the non-skid floor finish, resisting
- 2:33Speaker 4: slip even when water is spilled on it. The underwriters' laboratories,
- 2:37Speaker 4: whose seal is on each bottle, have proved this. Ask
- 2:41Speaker 4: for Lin-X self-polishing wax at your paint, hardware, or department store.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Headquarters for all three great Lin-X home brighteners and Chemtone,
- 2:50Speaker 4: the miracle wall finish that dries in one hour. And
- 2:57Speaker 4: now for today's mysterious adventure with Nick Carter. Our story
- 3:02Speaker 4: opens in Nick's office, where he and Patsy are having
- 3:04Speaker 4: a good-natured argument. Good-natured, that is, until about now.
- 3:08Speaker 5: But, Nick, I don't think that's true. Take me, for example.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Since I've been working with you, I've learned to observe
- 3:14Speaker 5: things I never saw before.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Perhaps, Patsy, you've undoubtedly improved while you've been my assistant,
- 3:18Speaker 4: but I still say that you really see very little
- 3:20Speaker 4: that goes on around you, in spite of all my training.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Oh, Nick, anybody would think that I.
- 3:24Speaker 4: All right, Patsy, let's see. How many steps are there
- 3:27Speaker 4: from the sidewalk up to the front.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Door of your house?
- 3:29Speaker 5: Why, there are... Let me see there.
- 3:31Speaker 4: How high up the floor are the windows in your bedroom?
- 3:33Speaker 5: Well, there are about two. No, no, one and a half.
- 3:36Speaker 4: What color is the two-cent stamp? Red.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Good for you.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Thought you were going to say chartreuse.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Nicholas Carter's office.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Is Mr. Carter there?
- 3:44Speaker 5: Oh, is that you, Penny?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Sure.
- 3:45Speaker 2: How are you, Miss Bowen?
- 3:46Speaker 5: I'm fine, thanks. How are things with you?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Pretty good. Can I talk to Nick?
- 3:50Speaker 5: Of course, Penny. Here he is.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Hello, Penny. How's my special assistant this afternoon?
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's what I called you up about, Nick. I think
- 3:57Speaker 2: there's going on down here.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Could you come over?
- 4:00Speaker 3: What is it, Penny? Trouble?
- 4:01Speaker 5: Gee, Nick, I don't know.
- 4:03Speaker 2: But it looks bad to me.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Can't you tell me what it is?
- 4:06Speaker 2: Not on the phone, Nick. You know you always told
- 4:09Speaker 2: me to be careful what I said on the phone.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Some of the gang might be listening in.
- 4:13Speaker 4: And quite right, Penny. All right, I'll take a run
- 4:15Speaker 4: over there.
- 4:15Speaker 3: You want your newsstand? Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Park your car down the block away so they can't
- 4:19Speaker 2: see it. I'll be waiting.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Okay, Penny. Be down right away.
- 4:22Speaker 3: So long.
- 4:22Speaker 7: What was that all about, Nick?
- 4:24Speaker 5: Sounded very important.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Penny thought it was important, too. But he wouldn't say
- 4:29Speaker 4: what it was. He's seen something and thinks I ought
- 4:32Speaker 4: to know about it.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Oh, that's what you get for being his hero, Nick.
- 4:36Speaker 7: He thinks you're just about the greatest guy in the world.
- 4:39Speaker 7: His ambition in life is to be a great detective
- 4:41Speaker 7: like you.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yes, I know it. And ever since his old man
- 4:44Speaker 4: died in my arms, I've felt I ought to sort
- 4:46Speaker 4: of keep an eye on him.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And he's smart, too.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Never forgets things I've told him about how to see
- 4:52Speaker 4: what goes on around him. Some people I know, not
- 4:55Speaker 4: so very far from here, could profit by his example.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Okay, Mr.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Carter, okay.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Get in your car and be on your way. Leave
- 5:01Speaker 5: me to a little peace and quiet here. You and
- 5:03Speaker 5: your wisecrack.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Very well, Patsy. Since I'm not wanted here, I'll go
- 5:07Speaker 4: call on Penny. I hope he's got something more exciting
- 5:10Speaker 4: up his sleeve than I think he has.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Gee, Nick, I thought you were never coming.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Sorry, Penny, but you know how traffic is.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Sure, I know. Come around the back of the stand, Nick,
- 5:29Speaker 2: so nobody will see us talking together.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Okay, Penny.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Now, what's up?
- 5:37Speaker 2: You see across the street there? You see the bank?
- 5:39Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And you see the empty stores on each side of
- 5:42Speaker 2: the bank?
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Well, a little while ago, a big black sedan pulled
- 5:46Speaker 2: up and two guys got out and went into the
- 5:47Speaker 2: vacant store on this side of the bank. Then two
- 5:50Speaker 2: more guys got out and went into the empty store
- 5:52Speaker 2: on the other side. Then the sedan drove away and
- 5:55Speaker 2: left the four guys there.
- 5:57Speaker 3: That's odd.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Any idea what might be going on?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Well, Nick, there's several factories around here, and today's the
- 6:05Speaker 2: day the bank downtown sends the money to this bank
- 6:08Speaker 2: for the payrolls. Tomorrow's sad, you know.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I see what you mean, Penny.
- 6:13Speaker 4: You think those men may be planning to hold up
- 6:15Speaker 4: the bank when the money gets here, huh?
- 6:16Speaker 2: Well, gosh, Nick, don't it look like that to you?
- 6:20Speaker 4: Could be, Penny. Yes, it does look suspicious. But, Penny,
- 6:26Speaker 4: robbery's not in my line. This is a job for
- 6:28Speaker 4: Lieutenant Riley and the city police. I'll give them a
- 6:30Speaker 4: ring and tell them what you saw.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You'll have to hurry, Nick. It's almost four o'clock and
- 6:33Speaker 2: that's when the car comes with the money.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Well, I'll phone Riley now. Maybe he can get one
- 6:37Speaker 4: of the squad cars together.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Great, here it comes.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Look!
- 6:40Speaker 4: Yes, it's an armored car, all right. And it's stopping
- 6:43Speaker 4: in front of the bank.
- 6:44Speaker 2: They're starting to unload the money and they don't know
- 6:45Speaker 2: they're making trouble.
- 6:46Speaker 6: Wait here.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I'll warn them they're in danger. Get back, Penny.
- 6:49Speaker 8: Keep out of the way.
- 6:50Speaker 9: I'll see if I can help the guards by picking
- 6:52Speaker 9: up some of the thugs with my gun.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Look out, Nick.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Don't get yourself killed. I won't. I'll stay behind this pole.
- 6:58Speaker 5: You got one, Nick.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I think so, but... Look out, Nick.
- 7:02Speaker 6: Nick, Nick.
- 7:03Speaker 8: Nick, are you dead?
- 7:05Speaker 4: Are you, Nick?
- 7:07Speaker 6: You're bleeding.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Oh, Nick.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Something hurt my leg, Nick. Nick, they're getting away.
- 7:13Speaker 4: Nick, we didn't stop them.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Nick.
- 7:25Speaker 4: But, Doc, I tell you, there's nothing wrong with me. Eh?
- 7:28Speaker 6: Nothing except that you've lost about a quart of blood.
- 7:31Speaker 6: There's a nasty hole in the side of your neck.
- 7:32Speaker 6: But I can't stay here doing nothing.
- 7:34Speaker 4: I've got to get after those thugs. I've got to
- 7:35Speaker 4: get out of here.
- 7:36Speaker 5: They just told me you were here. Are you hurt badly?
- 7:38Speaker 4: Oh, it's only a scratch, Patsy. But this Sawbones wants
- 7:40Speaker 4: to keep me here cooped up like a pet rabbit.
- 7:42Speaker 5: How is he, Doctor? Really?
- 7:44Speaker 6: He's got a bad hole in the side of his neck.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Oh.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Nothing fatal.
- 7:47Speaker 5: He'll get over it.
- 7:48Speaker 6: But he's lost a lot of blood, too. He's got
- 7:50Speaker 6: to be quiet and give nature a chance.
- 7:51Speaker 5: Now, look, Doc.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Look.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Nature's going to have a tough time doing anything for
- 7:54Speaker 4: me if you keep me here worrying because I can't
- 7:56Speaker 4: get out.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Nick, you're going to stay here and like it.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Good girl.
- 7:58Speaker 5: If you don't behave, I'll call some attendants and have
- 8:00Speaker 5: them undress you. Then you'll have to stay here whether
- 8:02Speaker 5: you like it or not.
- 8:02Speaker 4: But, Patsy, I tell you, there's nothing.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Where's Nick?
- 8:04Speaker 4: I want Nick!
- 8:06Speaker 3: Nick!
- 8:06Speaker 4: Oh, there's Penny.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Nick!
- 8:07Speaker 4: What's he doing here?
- 8:08Speaker 2: I want to see Nick!
- 8:09Speaker 4: Here I am, Penny. I'm coming, son.
- 8:11Speaker 5: You get right back in that bed, Nick Carter.
- 8:13Speaker 4: If you don't... Sorry, Patsy, but Penny wants me. Why, Penny,
- 8:18Speaker 4: what happened to you?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Oh, nothing much, Nick. A bullet got me in the leg,
- 8:22Speaker 2: that's all.
- 8:22Speaker 4: That's all?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Well, that's enough. Are you hurt bad, son? No.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Doc says I'll be all right in a few days.
- 8:28Speaker 2: But I got something to tell you, Nick.
- 8:30Speaker 3: What is it, son?
- 8:31Speaker 2: You know when I yelled at you just before you
- 8:33Speaker 2: got shot?
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yes, I remember.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Well, I saw a guy standing in the window of
- 8:36Speaker 2: the house across the street from the bank. Must have
- 8:39Speaker 2: been a lookout or something. And just as I looked up,
- 8:42Speaker 2: I saw a name at you. So I yelled, then
- 8:44Speaker 2: he fired.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Did you get a good look at him, Penny?
- 8:46Speaker 2: No, but I know which window it was.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Good boy. Which one was it?
- 8:50Speaker 2: You'll see. I busted it with my slingshot so you'd
- 8:53Speaker 2: know it. I put a marver right through it. And
- 8:55Speaker 2: on the first shot, too. I thought maybe you'd find
- 8:58Speaker 2: a clue there if you looked.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Penny, you're a wonder. I'm proud to have you for
- 9:02Speaker 3: an assistant.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It was a window on the fourth floor of a
- 9:05Speaker 2: brown house. You can't miss it.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Yes, sir, Penny.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I'm proud to have you for an assistant.
- 9:09Speaker 5: Nick, are you going to get back to bed, or
- 9:11Speaker 5: do I have to... I can't go back to bed, Patsy.
- 9:12Speaker 4: I've got to go places.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Things to do.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Can't let Penny down, not after the way he fixed
- 9:16Speaker 4: things up for me.
- 9:16Speaker 6: Nick.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yes, Penny?
- 9:18Speaker 2: Take this with you, Nick. It's as good as a
- 9:19Speaker 2: gun sometimes. I use it a lot.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Why, well, thanks, Penny. That slingshot of yours may come
- 9:26Speaker 4: in handy. I'll keep it right where I can get
- 9:28Speaker 4: at it.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Fast if I need it.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Oh, there you are, Nick.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Are you all right?
- 9:31Speaker 4: I certainly am all right. You got any of the gang?
- 9:33Speaker 3: Oh, no, Nick, we didn't.
- 9:34Speaker 9: We found the car they were in, wrecked six blocks away,
- 9:37Speaker 9: but there was nobody in it.
- 9:38Speaker 3: The car was stolen, too, so that's no help.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Did they get much?
- 9:41Speaker 9: Well, three guys are killed, one in the hospital, and $ 100, 000
- 9:46Speaker 9: in small bills is missing.
- 9:47Speaker 5: That's all I know.
- 9:49Speaker 3: You ain't got a lead in the world right now.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Well, I have, thanks to Penny here.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Penny? Who is Penny? My assistant. Penny?
- 9:56Speaker 4: And one of the best assistants a man could ever have.
- 9:58Speaker 4: He just gave me some dope that may... crack the whole.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Case wide open.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Well, what is it, man?
- 10:02Speaker 4: Tell me, quick. Not yet, Riley. This is confidential between
- 10:05Speaker 4: Penny and me. If it works out, I'll let you know.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Well, Penny, so long. I'll be seeing you.
- 10:09Speaker 2: So long, Nick.
- 10:10Speaker 5: Good luck. Nick Carter, where are you going now?
- 10:12Speaker 4: I'm out on the trail, Patsy, and nothing can stop me.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Well, if I can't stop you, at least I'm going
- 10:16Speaker 5: with you. Certainly can't drive a car in your condition.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Okay, then, come on.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Time's a-wasting.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Look, don't you need some help, Nick?
- 10:22Speaker 4: I'll send some of the boys with you. No, Riley,
- 10:24Speaker 4: this is a one-man job. And I'm the man who's
- 10:26Speaker 4: going to try to do it.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Patsy, I wish you hadn't come.
- 10:40Speaker 4: There may be trouble.
- 10:41Speaker 7: You may just as well save your breath, Mr. Carter,
- 10:44Speaker 7: because I'm going wherever you're going, and that's that. You
- 10:47Speaker 7: can't drive in your condition.
- 10:48Speaker 4: I could if you'd let me.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Well, I'm not going to let you, so that's that.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I don't know what gets into you women. When you
- 10:54Speaker 4: make up your minds, a team of horses couldn't change it.
- 10:57Speaker 7: You ready to tell me where you're going? I can't
- 11:00Speaker 7: keep on driving blindly all around the city, Nick.
- 11:02Speaker 4: All right, all right. I give up. I'm going back
- 11:05Speaker 4: to the scene of the robbery.
- 11:06Speaker 5: What are you going to do there?
- 11:07Speaker 4: That, my nosy young friend, is strictly my business.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Okay, okay. But I'd feel a lot safer if I
- 11:13Speaker 5: knew what you were planning to do.
- 11:16Speaker 3: It's dark now.
- 11:18Speaker 4: You can pull up just around the corner from the bank.
- 11:21Speaker 4: I'll get out there. Then you go back to the office.
- 11:24Speaker 5: How will you get back?
- 11:26Speaker 4: Don't worry about me. I can take care of myself.
- 11:28Speaker 5: I hope so. Is this where you want to go?
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Drop me here.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Now remember, you.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Back to the office.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Okay, bully.
- 11:39Speaker 5: But I don't like you going anywhere alone as weak
- 11:41Speaker 5: as you are.
- 11:41Speaker 4: It's skill that counts in this business, Patsy, not muscle.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Now get going.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I've got work to do.
- 11:55Speaker 4: So Nick is going alone to investigate the house where
- 11:58Speaker 4: the killers were who shot him. Does he have any
- 12:00Speaker 4: idea what dangers lie ahead of him? And will he
- 12:03Speaker 4: find any clues to the killers? We'll see in just
- 12:06Speaker 4: a moment. Have you been wishing for a furniture police

- 12:56Speaker 4: You'll find it at your paint, hardware, or department store,
- 12:59Speaker 4: where all three great home brighteners and Chemtone, the miracle
- 13:03Speaker 4: wall finish, are featured. And now, back to our story.
- 13:12Speaker 4: We left Nick, weak from loss of blood, climbing the
- 13:14Speaker 4: stairs to the fourth floor of the old tenement house,
- 13:17Speaker 4: trying to find some clue to the killers who shot
- 13:19Speaker 4: him and robbed the bank. As we rejoin him, he's
- 13:22Speaker 4: nearly reached the top.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I wish it wasn't the fourth floor.
- 13:29Speaker 4: I don't feel as ambitious as I did. Well, that's
- 13:35Speaker 4: a break. Only one apartment on the street side. And
- 13:39Speaker 4: there's someone home judging by the light under the door.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Here goes. Well, what do you want?
- 13:51Speaker 4: I'm investigating the bank holdup across the street this afternoon.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Bank holdup? Yes. You knew the bank was held up,
- 13:57Speaker 3: didn't you?
- 13:58Speaker 10: Yeah, I heard. I was out working at the time.
- 14:02Speaker 10: What do you want to get in here for?
- 14:03Speaker 4: I want to look out of your windows. She's like this.
- 14:06Speaker 4: We have a witness who says he saw the whole
- 14:08Speaker 4: thing from the window next door on this level. He's
- 14:11Speaker 4: a cranky old guy with a reputation for stretching the truth,
- 14:14Speaker 4: so I want to check up on him. I'd like
- 14:16Speaker 4: to look from your windows and see if he really
- 14:18Speaker 4: could have seen what he said he did.
- 14:20Speaker 10: Sounds nutty to me. Why don't you look out of
- 14:22Speaker 10: his windows?
- 14:23Speaker 4: I did, but I still can't be sure. So I
- 14:26Speaker 4: want to check all the windows on this floor.
- 14:28Speaker 3: There ain't no use in... Well... Okay, come on in. Thanks.
- 14:34Speaker 4: I won't be long.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Mind if I put this window shade up? Suit yourself.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I can't see much from here.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I'll try the other window. Hmm. Can't see anything from
- 14:49Speaker 4: here either. I guess the old guy was dreaming. Couldn't
- 14:53Speaker 4: see the bank at all with an armored car standing
- 14:55Speaker 4: in front of it.
- 14:56Speaker 3: You're satisfied now? So far, yes.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Okay to look at the other room, too.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess so. My wife's in there. I'll see
- 15:05Speaker 3: if she's dressed.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Certainly no broken windows in this room. And none of
- 15:10Speaker 4: them been repaired either.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Somebody coming in, Mary. You dressed? Yes, Peter. Coming in. Okay, copper,
- 15:16Speaker 3: you can go in.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Sorry to bother you, lady.
- 15:28Speaker 4: I won't be but a minute.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Okay, take your time.
- 15:33Speaker 4: No broken windows here either. Then he must have made
- 15:36Speaker 4: a mistake in the window.
- 15:37Speaker 3: How about it, copper?
- 15:40Speaker 4: I guess the old guy must have.
- 15:42Speaker 3: Hey, do you have any.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Children in the house?
- 15:44Speaker 3: Sure. No kids? What?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Who just saw a marble here on the floor and wondered?
- 15:50Speaker 4: Then he said he shot a marble through the window.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Well, come on. If you've seen all you want, you better.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Just a minute.
- 15:55Speaker 3: Just a minute.
- 15:56Speaker 4: I want to take another look at this window.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Get your hands up, flatfoot. Make it snappy. I don't
- 16:03Speaker 3: see what... Oh, you don't, huh?
- 16:04Speaker 10: You come up here looking for a broken window, didn't you?
- 16:07Speaker 10: And when you didn't find none, you go around poking
- 16:08Speaker 10: your fingers in the putty.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Well, really, now.
- 16:10Speaker 10: Don't try to kid me. I've been watching you. So
- 16:13Speaker 10: you found a window with a soft putty where we
- 16:14Speaker 10: put the new pane of glass in.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Well, it won't do you no good now. All right, slug,
- 16:20Speaker 3: I'll take over now.
- 16:22Speaker 4: By Jake Larner.
- 16:23Speaker 3: So you're Slug's wife. Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Well... I'd never have known you in that woman's outfit.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Pretty clever.
- 16:29Speaker 6: A lot cleverer than you, copper. You come right up
- 16:32Speaker 6: here just begging for it, didn't you? I thought we'd
- 16:35Speaker 6: give it to you for keeps out in front of
- 16:37Speaker 6: the bank this afternoon, but I'm glad now we didn't.
- 16:40Speaker 6: This is going to be more fun. We can make
- 16:44Speaker 6: it last longer.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Burn him down.
- 16:46Speaker 6: No, slug.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Shooting's too quick.
- 16:49Speaker 6: I got a better plan for this dumb punk than that.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Go right ahead, gentlemen. Don't mind me. But do you
- 16:55Speaker 4: mind if I put my arms down?
- 16:57Speaker 6: Get his gun, Slug. Sure, Jake. Quite a surprise to
- 17:01Speaker 6: find us here, copper, ain't it? Never figured we'd hide
- 17:04Speaker 6: out right here alongside the bank, did you? Them dumb
- 17:07Speaker 6: cops probably are searching all over the city, looking for
- 17:10Speaker 6: where we went to.
- 17:11Speaker 3: And all the time, we're right here. Hey, Jake.
- 17:14Speaker 6: What?
- 17:14Speaker 10: This guy's a regular arsenal. Three guns he's got. I
- 17:18Speaker 10: don't care how many he's got. Take them all away
- 17:20Speaker 10: from him. Hey, Jake, look at this. He's got three
- 17:25Speaker 10: guns and a slingshot.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Are you kidding?
- 17:27Speaker 10: A cop carrying a slingshot around to keep the big
- 17:30Speaker 10: bad robbers away.
- 17:32Speaker 3: What a dumb mug he is.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Oh, look now, Slug, don't take all of Flatfoot's weapons away.
- 17:40Speaker 6: Where's your manners? Leave him keep the slingshot.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Why, sure. Here, Mr.
- 17:46Speaker 10: Dick, I'll put it right back in your pocket where
- 17:49Speaker 10: it came from. Maybe you'll save your life with.
- 17:55Speaker 3: It.
- 17:57Speaker 6: Look what Santa Claus brought us to play with, Pete.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. Where'd he blow in from?
- 18:02Speaker 6: Walked right up the stairs all by himself. Look, copper,
- 18:07Speaker 6: did you ever have a lighted cigar butt jammed in
- 18:10Speaker 6: your eye?
- 18:11Speaker 3: That's just for a starter.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Then we're going.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Oh, no, you're not.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Jake, look out! Get him, slug! Give me that gun, Jake.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Give me that or I'll twist your arm off.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Get out of the way, Jake!
- 18:20Speaker 5: You're going to give.
- 18:21Speaker 3: It to me? Nice work, slug.
- 18:27Speaker 5: You knocked him cold.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Oh, I'll fix him for this.
- 18:30Speaker 3: He nearly broke my wrist. Shall I croak him now, Jake?
- 18:33Speaker 5: No.
- 18:35Speaker 6: Wait till we get ready to leave. Then we'll play
- 18:37Speaker 6: games with him.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Tie him up, but good.
- 18:40Speaker 6: We'll get the stuff ready to move out when the
- 18:42Speaker 6: boys bring the car tonight. Then we'll come back here
- 18:44Speaker 6: and take care of him.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Over on your face, flatfoot. So I can get the
- 18:49Speaker 3: ropes on you.
- 18:51Speaker 10: Wouldn't he like to know that we got all that
- 18:53Speaker 10: dough hidden in the empty warehouse right next door here?
- 18:57Speaker 3: There's still a.
- 18:58Speaker 10: Little hole through the wall of the apartment here and we.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Got a foolproof hideout.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:03Speaker 11: You know, if he was only smart like Jake, I'd
- 19:06Speaker 11: be afraid of him. But there ain't nobody as smart
- 19:08Speaker 11: as Jake.
- 19:09Speaker 3: There, copper.
- 19:10Speaker 10: That takes care of you. Try and get out of
- 19:14Speaker 10: them ropes.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Hey, what you let the flatfoot in here for anyway, Slug?
- 19:18Speaker 3: Don't be dumb, Pete.
- 19:19Speaker 10: If I had any to smell something funny and come
- 19:22Speaker 10: back again with a wagon.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 10: Anyways, how'd I know he was wise to the busted glass?
- 19:27Speaker 5: You know, Jake... Maybe you ain't so smart at that.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Yeah? What's eating you?
- 19:33Speaker 11: Well, you thought it was so smart to double back
- 19:36Speaker 11: here with the cash and hide out right across the
- 19:38Speaker 11: street from the bank. And first thing, a cop smells
- 19:42Speaker 11: his way right up here.
- 19:43Speaker 3: So what?
- 19:44Speaker 6: Only one cop come, didn't he? And he ain't walking
- 19:46Speaker 6: out of here, is he?
- 19:47Speaker 4: Well, no, but.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Who's running this business?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Anyway?
- 19:50Speaker 5: You are, Jake.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Okay, okay. All right.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Now, Pete, you and me are going back into the
- 19:55Speaker 6: warehouse and fix up the stuff ready to leave. Slug,
- 19:58Speaker 6: you stay here with the copper. Clean up the joint good.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Fingerprints and any kind of junk that might leave a tip.
- 20:03Speaker 5: Don't leave nothing.
- 20:04Speaker 6: We'll be back when we've took care of the dough.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Okay, Jake. I'll watch him. Oh, oh.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Fell into it right this time. I should have had
- 20:28Speaker 4: somebody standing by just in case. Well, whoever tied these
- 20:36Speaker 4: ropes knew what he was doing. I'll never get out
- 20:39Speaker 4: of these. Hands tied together. Elbows tied tight to my body. Oh,
- 20:47Speaker 4: my head. I wish I felt as happy as slug sounds.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Hey, there's blood on my hands.
- 20:56Speaker 4: The bullet hole in my neck must have opened up.
- 20:59Speaker 4: The blood's made my hands slippery. Yes, I think I
- 21:03Speaker 4: can get my hands loose.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Ah, there.
- 21:12Speaker 4: But what good is that? My elbow's tied up tight. Oh,
- 21:16Speaker 4: if only I had some way to get word outside
- 21:18Speaker 4: that I'm up here. I can't shout. Slug would hear
- 21:22Speaker 4: me and bump me off quick. Oh, if only I had.
- 21:25Speaker 3: A gun I could.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Ah, but Slug took them. If only I had.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Ah, I do have one weapon left. Penny's slingshot. Slingshot.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Slingshot.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Slingshot.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Slingshot. Yes.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Shoot something into the street through the window. Somebody might
- 21:42Speaker 4: find it. Shoot something. Shoot something.
- 21:44Speaker 3: What?
- 21:45Speaker 4: Shoot what? Shoot what? My badge.
- 21:48Speaker 6: My badge.
- 21:49Speaker 4: My honorary police badge. If only I can get it
- 21:51Speaker 4: out of my pocket.
- 21:53Speaker 3: If only I could reach it.
- 21:56Speaker 4: I never have had much use for that badge, but
- 22:01Speaker 4: I certainly need it now. Oh, I can't get it
- 22:05Speaker 4: in the pocket.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Well, I could tear it open.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Now for the slingshot in the outside pocket.
- 22:15Speaker 3: There we are.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Now, if I can stretch my arms far enough apart
- 22:20Speaker 4: to shoot this badge through the.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Window, I can... What's that? What the.
- 22:27Speaker 10: Hey, copper, what are you trying to... The guy's still
- 22:31Speaker 10: out cold. He couldn't have done nothing. But somebody broke
- 22:35Speaker 10: that window. Maybe the dick's only faking. Maybe he ain't
- 22:40Speaker 10: really out. Let me take a look.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Gosh. Here you go, Luck.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Hey, Jake! Oh, what a break.
- 22:47Speaker 3: He's out cold.
- 22:48Speaker 6: I thought he wasn't coming close enough so I could
- 22:49Speaker 6: grab his legs, but he did.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Lady Luck must be on my side today. Just Luck
- 22:53Speaker 4: is head hit in the radiator that way. Now, if
- 22:56Speaker 4: I can wriggle over there and get his gun.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Just a little more. Jake will be back any minute.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I've got to get that gun before.
- 23:11Speaker 6: Ah, there.
- 23:13Speaker 12: Now, now if I can roll back under the bed
- 23:15Speaker 12: before Jake gets here. So far, so good. Lady Luck,
- 23:25Speaker 12: stay with me.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Slug, what happened?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Slug, Slug!
- 23:29Speaker 5: Hey, look, Jake, the copper's gone.
- 23:31Speaker 6: And Slug's out cold. I thought I told you guys
- 23:33Speaker 6: to tie that.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Fat foot up so he couldn't move.
- 23:35Speaker 5: We did, Jake.
- 23:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it looks like you did. Come on, maybe we
- 23:37Speaker 6: can catch him outside before he gets away.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Hey, Jake. Jake, look.
- 23:41Speaker 5: The door's still locked here.
- 23:43Speaker 11: The dick couldn't have got out this way.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Well, he didn't get out the way we come in.
- 23:46Speaker 3: He must still be here. Look under the.
- 23:49Speaker 4: Up with your hands, both of you.
- 23:50Speaker 6: Quick.
- 23:50Speaker 4: He's got a gun. Get him up, I said. I'm
- 23:52Speaker 4: not fooling you. That's just a warning. I said I'm
- 23:54Speaker 4: not fooling. Now drop your guns on the floor. Both
- 23:57Speaker 4: of you.
- 23:58Speaker 3: We better do it, Jake. He means business.
- 24:01Speaker 4: You bet I do. Drop those guns fast.
- 24:04Speaker 3: Okay, you win. For now.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Drop the other one, Jake. I know you have two
- 24:11Speaker 4: of them.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Here. Thank you.
- 24:14Speaker 4: Good. Now, Pete, slowly and easily, kick the guns over
- 24:18Speaker 4: toward me.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Now, stay where you are. I'll kick those guns over.
- 24:26Speaker 3: That's better. Now what? Want us to untie you?
- 24:29Speaker 4: No, I want you to stay right there. And I'll
- 24:32Speaker 4: stay right here.
- 24:33Speaker 11: Yeah, but it's all right, Jake. He can't last long now.
- 24:37Speaker 11: All we gotta do is wait here till he falls over.
- 24:39Speaker 11: And he's lost so much blood now he can't hardly
- 24:42Speaker 11: sit up.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Sure. How long you think you're gonna hold out, copper?
- 24:47Speaker 4: Long enough to see you three thugs in jail.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I bet that don't nobody know you're up here. So
- 24:53Speaker 3: how do you expect to be rescued?
- 24:54Speaker 4: I sent a messenger out the window to tell my
- 24:57Speaker 4: friends I'm here waiting for them.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Hey, look, Jake, the window is busted.
- 25:00Speaker 3: So what?
- 25:02Speaker 6: This flat foot will be out cold long before anybody
- 25:05Speaker 6: comes up here. Unless it's the boys with the car
- 25:07Speaker 6: come to take us.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Out of here.
- 25:11Speaker 6: You think you can last that long, copper?
- 25:15Speaker 11: You'll never be able to hold that gun on us
- 25:18Speaker 11: for another two hours.
- 25:20Speaker 5: You might as well give up.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Now, copper.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Think so? I want to take you three mugs in
- 25:25Speaker 4: so bad I'll wait all night.
- 25:29Speaker 3: I have to. Get back. I can see you.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Don't you try any funny business with me.
- 25:47Speaker 3: He's almost gone, Jake.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Another couple of minutes and he'll be out like a light.
- 25:52Speaker 3: As soon as he drops that gun, we'll rush him.
- 25:56Speaker 6: I don't know how they lasted this long.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Stay right there.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Stay there, both of you.
- 26:03Speaker 3: I can wait. Just as long as.
- 26:06Speaker 4: As.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Long as... Now.
- 26:11Speaker 4: He's gone.
- 26:12Speaker 6: Come on.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Oh, everything. You get that wrench up, you.
- 26:15Speaker 5: Oh, Nick.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Oh, hello, Patsy.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Riley.
- 26:18Speaker 9: What's going on here, Nick?
- 26:19Speaker 4: These are the thugs that stuck up the bank. Oh.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Money's in the warehouse. Next door.
- 26:26Speaker 9: You're a wonder, Nick. Take care of these fellas, Sergeant.
- 26:29Speaker 5: Send a couple of men to get the money out
- 26:30Speaker 5: of the warehouse, like Nick says. Oh, Nick, I've been
- 26:32Speaker 5: so afraid for you. Did they hurt you?
- 26:34Speaker 4: I'm all right, Patsy. Just a little tired.
- 26:39Speaker 9: She's a great girl, that Patsy. When she left you,
- 26:42Speaker 9: she phoned me and told me what you were trying
- 26:44Speaker 9: to do, Nick. So I got some of the men
- 26:45Speaker 9: together and came as quick as I could.
- 26:47Speaker 5: We got a flat.
- 26:48Speaker 9: Tire and we'd have been here sooner.
- 26:49Speaker 4: And look, here's your badge, Nick.
- 26:51Speaker 3: A little bent, but as good as new.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Huh.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Thanks, Riley.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Lucky you found it.
- 26:57Speaker 9: It wasn't me that found it.
- 26:58Speaker 6: It was Patsy herself here.
- 27:00Speaker 3: You found it, Patsy.
- 27:02Speaker 5: Yes, Nick.
- 27:03Speaker 7: Then Riley spotted the broken window and we came up.
- 27:06Speaker 7: But don't ever let me hear you say again that
- 27:08Speaker 7: I'm not observant. Maybe I don't know how many steps
- 27:10Speaker 7: there are in front of my house.
- 27:12Speaker 5: But when it comes to things that count, I can
- 27:14Speaker 5: see them.
- 27:23Speaker 4: How about next week's adventure, Nick? Got something exciting coming up?
- 27:29Speaker 4: I certainly have, Ken. If you'll take a transcontinental train
- 27:32Speaker 4: stalled high in the mountains in a raging blizzard and
- 27:35Speaker 4: mix it with the murder of an opera singer and
- 27:37Speaker 4: her maid.
- 27:38Speaker 5: And add.
- 27:38Speaker 7: The theft of $ 150, 000 worth of jewels from the said
- 27:41Speaker 7: opera singer and a snow slide down the mountain right
- 27:45Speaker 7: where the train is stalled.
- 27:46Speaker 4: And you have the puzzle and crime that I was
- 27:48Speaker 4: up against. Sounds pretty complicated to me, Nick. How'd you
- 27:51Speaker 4: find the solution? Well, the solution depended on two things.
- 27:54Speaker 4: a broken bottle of perfume, and a chow dog that
- 27:57Speaker 4: was lost in the snow. You certainly make it sound attractive.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Did it work out okay?
- 28:01Speaker 5: You should ask that, knowing Nick.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Sorry, what do you call the story? I call it
- 28:06Speaker 4: Murder on Mad Mountain.
- 28:07Speaker 5: Or the Mystery of the Opera Singer's Dog.
- 28:10Speaker 4: So long for now.
- 28:11Speaker 5: So long, everybody.
- 28:12Speaker 4: And so long to you, Nick and Patsy. We'll be
- 28:14Speaker 4: looking forward to seeing you again next week. Next week,
