- 0:03Our number 2 welcome back Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:06Network talking sports with you right up until 2 two to five.
- 0:12The drive, Heather and Sean 330. Frank Caliendo in studio with
- 0:16the afternoon duo. Caliendo at the Funny Bone
- 0:20tonight, but he will be here prior to that with Heather and
- 0:24Lucas. Let's head to the Twin City,
- 0:26shall we? Joe O'Donnell, the radio voice
- 0:29of the Minnesota Wild. He joins us.
- 0:31Wild down 320. If not for an inch, maybe not
- 0:35even an inch. Joe Good to talk to Trenton,
- 0:38Ken. So I'm obviously referring to
- 0:40the play that Hartman scored and Nyquist.
- 0:43I think it was Nyquist was offside by maybe a hare.
- 0:47Did it appear to you, you or I guess when did it dawn on you
- 0:50once they went to replay that maybe this thing's going to be
- 0:53called back. My God, it was close.
- 0:55Yeah, it was. Thanks.
- 0:57Sent me on. As always guys, appreciate you
- 1:00making some time for the Stanley Cup Playoff.
- 1:03It was, it was. I don't think I realized there
- 1:07was an issue until the referee went to the, you know, it's over
- 1:13the PA speakers and said that Vegas was challenging for
- 1:16offside. And I just was like, Oh, no,
- 1:18because and that spot, you're probably not making that move
- 1:22unless you're pretty darn short A lot of times, you know, the
- 1:26goalie interference is a Gray area, right?
- 1:28Like how does how does Toronto see it?
- 1:30The league offices? How does how do the referee see
- 1:32it offside is pretty much like they can zoom in on that camera
- 1:36and you know, one way or the other make a pretty much
- 1:39determining decision. And it just felt like when Vegas
- 1:44is making that challenge a while, we're going to have that
- 1:46goal wiped off the board. Once I got probably like the
- 1:49second replay look where the Vegas player wasn't blocking the
- 1:53view of Nyquist. You could see escape was over
- 1:55the blue line just a fraction of an inch.
- 1:58And and that that made it, you know, no goal and got to regroup
- 2:03and go to overtime. Unfortunately, from Minnesota
- 2:05didn't go their way again back-to-back overtime games, But
- 2:08they have a chance to really change the narrative tonight.
- 2:10And I think even just a win tonight, the Force Game 7 says
- 2:14that this team was different than the past teams that have
- 2:16all had a 21 series lead, have all been lost the next three
- 2:20games. That's been the Wild unfortunate
- 2:23calling card in the first round. Their struggle getting out of
- 2:25the first round is starting the series properly, getting out to
- 2:29a lead. And then ultimately the, you
- 2:31know, either the more experienced team or the better
- 2:33team, whatever you want to call them the favorite, you know,
- 2:35they they take over. The Wild have a chance to change
- 2:38that tonight on home ice. And I really do think they have
- 2:40a good chance to do that. How does Houghton get that open
- 2:44that again, we know that I'm I'm a novice, so you got to help me
- 2:48out here because seeing that guy just all load in the middle of
- 2:50the ice right in front of the goal just left me shaking my
- 2:53head. Yeah, well, it was a tough
- 2:55balance for Zach Bogosian. I mean, it sticks on the on the
- 2:58dasher on the ice. He sees the puck being played
- 3:01back then that by Nick Hague, the golden light fence men who
- 3:03pinched down along the boards and the puck just jumped over
- 3:06his tape. Once that happens in the blink
- 3:09of an eye now all of a sudden you can get exposed in some
- 3:12spots. And I had a coach many years ago
- 3:14in the in the old ECHL days that used to say one mistake, 2
- 3:18mistakes, three mistakes, goal. And so you could really point
- 3:22to, you know, fans on Twitter or after Marco Rossi for the puck
- 3:26battle behind the net initially was Tanner Pearson and fans are
- 3:29on John Merrill for not having this guy and Bogosian for not,
- 3:33you know, handling that puck. Like you could probably pick any
- 3:35number of them. The Wild coaching staff
- 3:38certainly not going to pinpoint to me or anybody else externally
- 3:43who was mainly at fault. But generally speaking, when a
- 3:45guy's that open, you know, in a grade A scoring area, it's
- 3:50usually more than one culprit. And it was just unfortunate
- 3:53because, again, the game happened so fast.
- 3:56They play so hard to get in that spot and then you know, a puck
- 3:59jumps here or you know, a guy blueses an edge or you know
- 4:03whatever and and all of a sudden in the back of your nut.
- 4:06Yeah, it really was. And it was a hell of a shot of
- 4:09Fleury had no chance. So Gustafson, who had to leave
- 4:12the game, don't see this very often where goalie starts and
- 4:14then it's an illness that takes him out of the crease and
- 4:18apparently that's what it was. So was was anything said to did
- 4:22he feel this prior to the game or there's just sneak up on him?
- 4:25Did you guys know that he was a little under the weather before
- 4:28they took the ice to begin the game?
- 4:30I had no idea, Ken. I found out, I guess either
- 4:35after the game or the next morning, which should have been
- 4:37yesterday morning through some some folks on the staff, that it
- 4:41was something that Gusterson was dealing with leading up to the
- 4:43game and tried to literally gut it out.
- 4:48So yeah, that was tough. I mean, you can't fall Flurry.
- 4:51In fact, I thought the Wild play their past period in the third
- 4:54in part because it's Flurry and they have so much respect for
- 4:57him. We've talked about that on the
- 4:58show before, but also because then you have a goalie coming in
- 5:01cold after 40 minutes of game time and a couple hours of
- 5:04sitting there, you don't want them to be exposed.
- 5:07So I thought the Wild really defended well.
- 5:09Well, they showed her to see in their game desperation plays,
- 5:12the block shots and they kept the really good Vegas team in
- 5:15their building without a shot for, you know, 1st 13 or so
- 5:18minutes of that period. And then Flurry made a couple of
- 5:21big saves. So, you know, he gave him a
- 5:24chance. You certainly aren't pending it
- 5:26on him again. It just feels like right now
- 5:29Minnesota last couple games, hockey gods are not they're not
- 5:33looking down on them that they were maybe earlier in the series
- 5:36with some bounces or calls or breaks.
- 5:38Again, I'm a big believer that at some point you make you make
- 5:42your own luck in a series. You make your own breaks.
- 5:45And I really just think that Minnesota is going to come out
- 5:47tonight. I think they're going to have to
- 5:49weather a storm early. Ken.
- 5:50I really believe Beck is going to smell blood in the water.
- 5:53Wild maybe a little bit emotionally stung.
- 5:55But I think if they can settle into this hockey game, they got
- 5:57a really good. You mentioned just looking back
- 6:01how the season's going to end if they can force a game seven kind
- 6:04of building on that going forward.
- 6:06So I saw it on Twitter, a couple people going back and forth.
- 6:08So we saw the complaints of the 10:00 puck drop, right?
- 6:11That happened in what, Game 2 earlier in the series, now 630.
- 6:15But back at home, they're complaining about that because I
- 6:17work in downtown to Saint Paul. So what is the yeah, what is the
- 6:22perfect time, I guess, for puck drop because they don't like
- 6:25what they're getting? Well, for me personally, Trent,
- 6:29or I mean, I don't know what to tell you, there is, look, the
- 6:32NHL, they catch Flack when they don't stagger their games.
- 6:36If there's three games that start at 7:00 on the East Coast,
- 6:39if you jump on the social network, you'll see people
- 6:43going, this is terrible, Like all three games are at
- 6:45intermission. What are we doing here?
- 6:47You start staggering games and then you end up with a game that
- 6:50starts at, you know, 11:10 PM Eastern.
- 6:54And nobody on the East Coast watches past the first period.
- 6:57So dams if you do, dance if you don't ultimately, I don't.
- 7:02You know, the big thing about the wild right now and this
- 7:05series has been the time change, right?
- 7:07The travel and the time change is a real thing.
- 7:10Like I feel it as a broadcaster. I don't have to go out and do
- 7:13anything near what these guys are dirting on the ice.
- 7:16And just the fact that like your your body clocks a little off
- 7:19when you go to the Pacific Time zone for that first half a day
- 7:22or day until you get adjusted to it.
- 7:24And so that is sort of a real thing, like the back and forth,
- 7:27especially if this series does go 7.
- 7:29You'll play game five in Pacific Time zone, Game 6 tonight
- 7:33Central, back to the Pacific Time zone, Game 7, which is the
- 7:36one day off in between. So we'll see if that affects
- 7:39either team should we get there. But these guys are pros.
- 7:42They don't care if he's dropped a puck at midnight.
- 7:45They're not going to make any excuses.
- 7:47I want to talk about Matt Boldy's goal.
- 7:49He's LED all forwards in in ice time, which is amazing.
- 7:52He's such a great power forward. He really, and he's just, he's
- 7:56getting better. I think Joe, I really do.
- 7:58I don't think you guys have seen the best of Matt Boldy and
- 8:01you've seen a real good Matt Boldy so far.
- 8:03But that goal the other night, what a thing of beauty.
- 8:06Yeah, and even the the goal in Game 3 Kenny, where he goes in
- 8:10on the fore check and stops Noah Hannifin D to D reverse and
- 8:15comes out in front and just kind of outweighs Aiden Hill for that
- 8:17split second beat some high glove like he is playing like a
- 8:20man possessed. And this is the Matt Boldy that
- 8:23the wild expect every game now. Is that a reality over 80 two
- 8:27games of the regular season? Probably not.
- 8:29There's very few in the world to do that.
- 8:31And even sometimes they're, you know, the game's best have a
- 8:34have a couple of nights off over the course of 6-7 months.
- 8:37But what we're seeing from Matt Baldy is the confidence, his
- 8:40ability to use his size. He's obviously a great skater.
- 8:44He's got an unbelievable shot and released like he's as gifted
- 8:47hand eye coordination wise as I think anybody in the NHL.
- 8:51You look at the the breakaway goal he scored earlier in the
- 8:53series in Game 2 on that Capri soft 3 foot saucer pass like
- 8:59passes under the passes. Unreal.
- 9:01The ability to handle that pass at full speed at center ice and
- 9:05keep a, you know, an NHL defenseman on his back there
- 9:07while he goes in and scores is is equally impressive.
- 9:11So love what we're seeing from that Bodie.
- 9:13The Wild fans that have been detractors of him are eating a
- 9:16lot of crow right now. He's had an amazing series and I
- 9:20expect him to be a big factor tonight.
- 9:22Saw a update on the Excel Center that won't be at the Excel
- 9:25Center for very much longer, but the facelift that they're going
- 9:29to be giving the building and going from asking from half a
- 9:32billion dollars from the state and now we're just going to drop
- 9:34it down to $50 million. What is this facelift though?
- 9:37I mean, to me feels like a a new building.
- 9:40What needs to be fixed? What needs to be renovated for
- 9:43the Excel Center? In my opinion, it just needs to
- 9:47be updated a little bit, right? Buildings now, you know, next
- 9:50year will be the 25th season of the Wild.
- 9:53They're building, yeah. Then they're building from day
- 9:56one. So you know there's things that
- 9:59you want to do club level wise, suite wise, the amenities help
- 10:03generate a lot of revenue and corporate business.
- 10:06Obviously the naming rights deal will be changed going into next
- 10:09season. As you said, it won't be Excel
- 10:11Energy Center anymore. So I just think from like, and I
- 10:16give the wild credit, like I see the brass and ownership and
- 10:19Craig Leopold on the road with the team throughout the season
- 10:21because they want to see what other buildings look like.
- 10:24Like you, you can guess. But until you get in there and
- 10:27see what the suites look like in Vegas or what's this new club
- 10:30level like or Seattle's got a new building, what have they put
- 10:33in the state-of-the-art? And you start to pull ideas from
- 10:36it. And I really think that's a
- 10:38great way to go about it. You know, you got to see what
- 10:40the competition has, what you like, what you don't like, and
- 10:43then and kind of base your plan on that.
- 10:44So love the fact that, you know, the building at some point here,
- 10:48hopefully we'll just get a little bit more updated.
- 10:51It's only going to be great for the Wild and for their fans.
- 10:54And again, with such a great hockey fan base here, you want
- 10:58everything to be the best and, and that'll keep, you know,
- 11:00people coming through the doors. A couple more will let you go.
- 11:03Joe Jones on radio voice of the Minnesota Wild.
- 11:05Are you surprised with the Dallas, Colorado series so far?
- 11:11I am. I thought with no Miro Hasting
- 11:13and no Jason Robertson, stars are going to be in trouble.
- 11:17But they found a way to win two games where they didn't really
- 11:21lead. You know, they had a hit, a 21
- 11:23series lead and I think they had LED for less than two minutes in
- 11:27the entire three games. So they found a way.
- 11:30Not at their best, right? They weren't dominating that
- 11:32series. They weren't controlling the
- 11:34play, the squeak out wins. That's what veteran teams do
- 11:37now. They got the Avalanche on the
- 11:39ropes. I didn't expect it at all.
- 11:42I think there's a chance there's four-game sixes tonight.
- 11:45NHL put out a note about the last time that four teams staved
- 11:50off elimination and forced to Game 7 and how rare that can be.
- 11:54I believe the last time there were four-game sixes, two teams
- 11:56advanced, two teams spotted off and and forced to Game 7.
- 12:00So great night for the NHL all the way around.
- 12:02And I just, I just really feel like this Minnesota Wild team,
- 12:06it said such a roller coaster season, they dealt with so much.
- 12:10It just feels like a fitting time for them to kind of, you
- 12:13know, again, tell all these fans that are willing to jump off the
- 12:17bandwagon, don't quit on us yet, and they'll find a way back to
- 12:20Vegas. That's the hope, anyway.
- 12:22Even up 32, how concerned should Ken be about his Jets?
- 12:26No Shifley, No Shifley going up there for Game 6.
- 12:30Well, I think if you're Ken Miller, you're glad that they
- 12:33showed up in game five. That's for sure.
- 12:35Trend in the wrong direction, and when you have an all world
- 12:39potential MVP goaltender encounter, Hello Buck.
- 12:41He needed to bounce back. And I didn't get to watch much
- 12:44of that game. I checked the score a couple
- 12:46times. I checked Twitter.
- 12:47Seemed like hello Buck played well, That's got to be
- 12:50reassuring for anybody north of the border or a guy in Des
- 12:52Moines sitting next to you. Yeah.
- 12:53That's for sure, although the second goal was was was playoff.
- 12:57Hello, Buck. But for the most part some
- 12:58great. Hey Joe, thanks for doing this
- 13:00brother. I hope they get back to Vegas.
- 13:02I truly do. And if they do, we'll impose on
- 13:04you and if they don't, give you a couple of weeks and we'll run
- 13:07you down before the cup final. Thanks for what you do for us,
- 13:09Joe O'Donnell. Appreciate it.
- 13:11Yeah, of course. Guys talk.
- 13:12To you soon. Yeah.
- 13:13Good to talk to you. Joe O'Donnell, voice of the
- 13:15Minnesota Wild. Big game for them tonight.
- 13:17I I was going to ask him, but I didn't want to put him in a bad
- 13:19spot. I hate games in Vegas.
- 13:21I think it's way over the top. Yeah.
- 13:23It's just too much. I'm trying too much because I'm
- 13:26probably so. Yeah, you know what?
- 13:27It's probably so in that, yeah, I think it's just a reflection
- 13:31of a I'm old, be where I grew up and what I'm used to and all the
- 13:35pomp and circumstances and the bells and the whistle.
- 13:38Just dropped the damn puck, right?
- 13:40For me I want to show. Right.
- 13:41And you get that when you go to a game.
- 13:43Because I'm going to watch hockey.
- 13:45I don't know the nuances. I don't know the little things
- 13:48that are there. Give me a little something next.
- 13:50And they get that and. You're doing it also in Las
- 13:53Vegas, not exactly a hockey hotbed.
- 13:55Although they sell out every game, they absolutely they love,
- 13:58love their team. That's the most.
- 14:00It's not the Raiders in Las Vegas, no, it is the Golden
- 14:02Knights, because the Golden Knights were theirs from day
- 14:05one. That's not the case with the NFL
- 14:07franchise, as everybody knows good stuff out of Joe O'Donnell.
- 14:11Do they get back? I don't think.
- 14:14So you don't think so? No, They've played well in this
- 14:16series, man. They I feel like every time I
- 14:18watch it, they're not even when they've LED it felt it's felt a
- 14:22little fluky to me. Again, very novice in my hockey
- 14:26looking, but and I haven't watched every minute of every
- 14:29game. But when I do it just Vegas
- 14:33looks better. That tilting ice feels like the
- 14:37Wild are always going uphill. It's it'll be a big spot.
- 14:41Obviously I'm going to take the wild tonight.
- 14:44Then maybe it's just, you know, obviously wishful thinking.
- 14:46I hope there is a Game 7 on Saturday night.
- 14:48Saturday and it'll depend timing wise on whatever game sevens
- 14:53sure get Yeah, the way that that's going to play out, it'll
- 14:56be prime time if it's the only one, if there's maybe one other.
- 14:59I think it and I think all of the games that get played
- 15:02tonight, if there is a game seven, I think all of them come
- 15:05back on Saturday. That's what my schedule has
- 15:07here. I wonder if they would
- 15:09manipulate it though if we get a bunch of them.
- 15:11And if Winnipeg wins tomorrow, and I don't think they will, but
- 15:14if they do, they'll be no hockey on Sunday.
- 15:16So you move one of those, at minimum one of those, back to
- 15:19your prime time slot, Put it on ABC.
- 15:22What that late afternoon window? Yeah, could do that is.
- 15:24That what they've been doing? Or is it early before the NBA?
- 15:28Before the NBA. Noon into the NBA.
- 15:31So that would make it Toronto, Ottawa.
- 15:34And in a well, they're not moving that game to Sunday
- 15:38because that's they're not 2 Canadian teams.
- 15:40Hockey Night in Canada, Saturday night, 7 Eastern.
- 15:43Well, you can't play the Kings Edmonton because it's on the
- 15:45West Coast, you know. So it'd be have to be the
- 15:48Dallas, Colorado game because that'd be at least central.
- 15:50Time. I think that's going to game
- 15:52seven, I really do. So that'd be the one that they
- 15:54likely move to Sunday if they have that flexibility.
- 15:58Which we shall see. All right, let's do this.
- 16:00We're going to talk some to Dick, Dick Girardi coming up.
- 16:03We'll take a look at the 151st Run for the Roses about 5
- 16:08minutes before 6 for the gate to spring open.
- 16:11You can watch and wager at Prairie Meadows or if you're a
- 16:14FanDuel sports betting customer, if you're a Draftking sports
- 16:18betting customer, both of those apps, I think those are the only
- 16:22two that have a horse racing element to them.
- 16:25You can using the same wallet bet the DraftKings bet at
- 16:29FanDuel. You cannot at Circa, but about 5
- 16:33minutes before 6. So Girardi will help us out with
- 16:35that and that's coming up next. We'll talk to him.
- 16:39But before we do that, we'll give you a chance here to head
- 16:42to KX and o.com. Yep, right now it's your chance
- 16:45to win $1000. Head to KX and o.com, the pop up
- 16:50box will appear. Type in the word bank bank at KX
- 16:54and o.com, your chance to win $1000.
- 16:57This promotion is sponsored by our friends at Suntan City.
- 17:01Suntan City locations and some great specials throughout the
- 17:05state are the Central Iowa Suntan City sponsors the bonus
- 17:09bucks. Before we get Dick in here and
- 17:11he won't be ready till what it right at 1:30.
- 17:13So we got a couple of minutes. I got 2 horse racing questions
- 17:16for you #1 Why do you never bet the Oaks or rarely bet the Oaks?
- 17:22I don't know. I don't have an answer for you
- 17:24because I focus so much on Saturday.
- 17:26Yeah. There's so many races.
- 17:27But you already have your work. Done a lot of time I do on the
- 17:30Derby, but it's the undercard. Jets don't play tonight.
- 17:33No, they play Saturday. You got time this.
- 17:36No, they play. Tomorrow night, Yeah.
- 17:37Play tomorrow. Night.
- 17:37You got time this evening. Can you bring us something for
- 17:40the I'll? Give you a little something for
- 17:41the old give. You a little taste.
- 17:43OK, now here's another thing is I was reading up and reminding
- 17:46myself of my betting. I keep it pretty simple.
- 17:49Couple of exacta boxes, a couple of trifecta boxes and that's it.
- 17:52And then the kids get their couple bucks to bet on a horse.
- 17:54Your favorite name? Yep.
- 17:56Favorite name? Favorite color?
- 17:58Ella hits an 80 to one shot a couple of years ago.
- 18:00Yep, got a new Barbie Dream house out of it.
- 18:03So I was reading this though and it was quite baffling to me.
- 18:07An exacta A2 team 2 horse. Yeah.
- 18:10And a quinella, and it said this, an exacta with the same
- 18:15total cost as a quinella could pay considerably more if a
- 18:19favorite does not win. If a favorite wins, the quinella
- 18:23could pay proportion proportionally more.
- 18:26Well, it all depends on how much money spent in each pool.
- 18:29That's so I just, I don't. Think there's no.
- 18:31There's no definitive answer to that.
- 18:33It's not a. Right in the exact if the long
- 18:37shot wins and the favorite finishes second, you get a
- 18:40decent price because most people put the favorite on top and then
- 18:44don't circle around and put him underneath to finish second
- 18:47because they're so confident that he's going to win.
- 18:49Why would you throw one of your tickets away?
- 18:51Because that's essentially what you're doing when you box,
- 18:54right? If you bet 1-2 and it comes to
- 18:561, you bet the exact you're good and that's what a Cornell is.
- 18:59If you bet one and two can it can finish first or second in
- 19:03either order. Do they offer the Cornell on the
- 19:05Derby? I don't think they do.
- 19:06I not. I don't think they do it.
- 19:08That's a bet. That's that's going away, is it?
- 19:11Yeah. That was that was the back, back
- 19:13in the day. Very popular.
- 19:15All right, we'll take a time out.
- 19:15Dick Girardi will join us and next again the keyword this hour
- 19:20is bank Bank at kxno.com, your chance to win a grand bank.
- 19:23KX no.com Suntan City sponsors Dick Girardi, Who does he like?
- 19:28Well handicap the Derby with the long time scribe covered
- 19:32multiple derbies in his career. That's next Miller and Condon on
- 19:36the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, 130, Welcome back Miller and
- 19:46Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network coming
- 19:49up here at 2O clock to drive Heather and Lucas.
- 19:52They will be joined at 3:30 in studio by Frank Caliendo's in
- 19:56town at the Funny Bone tonight. Tomorrow morning on the morning
- 20:00show, Sean Roberts has Iowa State quarterback Rocco Bect.
- 20:03That's 725 right now. Let's talk Derby 151, shall we?
- 20:07Dick Girard discovered dozens of them for the, I believe, the
- 20:11Philadelphia Daily. Which paper were you at, Dick?
- 20:15In Philadelphia, I want to get the right one.
- 20:17You got it right. That's it.
- 20:20I got you now BetOnline dot AG and we take a look at the 20
- 20:25horse field and a lot of eyeballs on horse #21 who by a
- 20:29zoo right now is not in the race.
- 20:30But maybe we'll have an opportunity to run.
- 20:33So let's get to it, Dick. Obviously journalism #8 is the
- 20:37favorite. He comes out of California.
- 20:40He's done nothing wrong, obviously, in his career, with
- 20:42one exception. He finished third in his first
- 20:44start. Since then, he's never lost.
- 20:46But, and I say but, he's only beating five horses.
- 20:50Should that factor into how we're looking at this Derby?
- 20:53He's doing it well, but he's not beating the biggest of fields
- 20:57out in California. It's understandable why people
- 21:00would be concerned about that. I get it, you go from 5 to 20.
- 21:04But my theory on journalism and really in general on California
- 21:07horses at the Derby is they're generally so fast early in the
- 21:11race that they're more in the six or seven horse field like
- 21:14they're used to because most of the horses are behind them
- 21:17anyway when they come out of the first turn.
- 21:19So I wouldn't let that discourage you.
- 21:21As long as he breaks OK, I think he's going to come out of that
- 21:25first turn probably say 5-6 lengths from the front, maybe 5
- 21:29or 6 horses in front of them with the rest of them straggling
- 21:32behind them. So yeah, I would.
- 21:33I wouldn't be. I get why there is a concern,
- 21:35but I wouldn't worry them. Dick, the horse that I've heard
- 21:38the most buzz leading into it journalism.
- 21:41He is the betting favorite. But also I think of the people
- 21:43that I'm listening to, it's mostly journalists.
- 21:45Are we falling victim here to a name that is starting to swayed
- 21:49not guys like you, but that next year a person that hey, let's
- 21:53let's hope that journalism can get it done for us journalists.
- 21:56Yeah, it's possible, right? I mean, name people do like to
- 21:59bet names in this race because this is the one race that
- 22:01everybody's involved in, whether they know anything about horse
- 22:04racing or not. The good news is he's a really
- 22:06good horse. He's proved it on the track over
- 22:09and over again. And it's interesting.
- 22:11His name comes one one of his owners, Aaron Wellman.
- 22:14Aaron Wellman is the main owner. He was the sports editor of his
- 22:18high school newspaper and and the and the mother of this of
- 22:22journalism is named Mopatism. So that's how he came up with
- 22:25the name journalism. So yeah, he he's got some
- 22:29journalism journalism in his background and then the play on
- 22:32the mother's name and the even better news he's but he's by two
- 22:35time horse of the year curling. So he's got some great
- 22:38bloodlines going his way. Yeah, that's that's for certain.
- 22:40So let me ask you about the Japanese horse and and Japanese
- 22:43horses are making much more of an impact then I'm not sure if
- 22:46anybody thought that they would whether it be in the Breeders
- 22:49Cup last year. Forever Young runs a good race
- 22:51in the Kentucky Derby. Now here comes Lexer Cafe, who
- 22:55just looked like a a a beast in his last start.
- 22:59What do you do with a horse like Luxor Cafe who comes into this?
- 23:03Obviously he's going to be running counterclockwise as
- 23:05opposed to clockwise as they do over there, so he's got that
- 23:09working against them. I'm going to play him Dick.
- 23:12Am I crazy? You're not crazy because the
- 23:16Japanese are going to win the race.
- 23:17I mean, soon maybe. Yeah, it's going to happen.
- 23:21I mean, they're that good at this and they're breeding horses
- 23:24that can win all around the world.
- 23:27I would say this forever young, I think was in my mind was the
- 23:30best source in the Derby last year.
- 23:32He just got a heated distract, loses, loses by two noses.
- 23:35He ran a phenomenal race. So therefore, I think people are
- 23:38going to look at Luxor Cafe and say he's forever young.
- 23:42I don't think he is. And here's why I went.
- 23:45And the cool thing about this data and and video these days
- 23:49you can see everything and and not only that, you can find out
- 23:52times of races. So Luxor Cafe 2 races back when
- 23:57he wanted a mile and rent and run really well.
- 24:00He ran 2 seconds slower than grade one.
- 24:03Older horses did on the same cart in in Tokyo.
- 24:07So I look and these are the best horses in Japan, the older
- 24:11horses, and I'm thinking, all right, let's, let's give them
- 24:13115 fire. Let's be generous.
- 24:16Well, that means this horse is 20 points slower.
- 24:18That's a 95 that puts him in just that puts him in with a lot
- 24:21of other American horses. Now, the last race, which is
- 24:24much more visually impressive, the one in Naki Hao, couldn't
- 24:28have been any more impressive on the 29th of March.
- 24:30I think that's the one you're referring.
- 24:32He actually ran slower by a couple fifths.
- 24:35Then an allowance race went a couple races later and I looked
- 24:40up that horse and the horse that won is OK, but he's not a
- 24:43horseshoe. Think it's going to win the
- 24:44Derby. So that's the data I have to go
- 24:47on and that's all I have to go on.
- 24:49So yeah, I'm not going to use Luxor Cafe, but I don't want to
- 24:52talk to you off. No, that's, that's good.
- 24:53That's good info. I I didn't realize that the fact
- 24:56that you've gone back and actually looked at the entire
- 24:58card that the races that preceded to kind of stack up the
- 25:01times I did not take that step. So certainly something I'm now
- 25:04going to keep in mind. Dick, can you guys know this
- 25:08sport very well? I just learning jump in a couple
- 25:12of races a year. That's about it.
- 25:13But one that jumped off the page to me just in my initial kind of
- 25:16reading through was Grande, and the reason was twofold Trader
- 25:20Todd Pletcher. Hey, I know that guy.
- 25:22Jackie John Valiquist, I know that guy.
- 25:25So it's back-to-back. I know that guy as a novice.
- 25:28Anything that you like about Grande?
- 25:30So I did like his last race. It was clearly his best second
- 25:33in the Wood Memorial to Rodriguez, who's certainly going
- 25:36to get some action in this race that was kind of a one off.
- 25:40He hadn't done that before. And he's also a son of Curl.
- 25:43And so your question is, is this now the new norm for Grande?
- 25:48If it is, he's a contender. And you mentioned Pletcher has
- 25:51won the Derby twice and has won every race there is and Johnny B
- 25:55has won for Derby. So yeah, certainly the
- 25:57connections are there, 20 to 1, an interesting price.
- 26:01He wouldn't be on my ticket, but I don't want to talk to you off
- 26:04of them. If that race was real, then he's
- 26:07got a chance to be in a top 4. Is there of the preps of
- 26:11Florida, NY, California, Arkansas, Is there one that
- 26:15you're kind of doubt and I guess got to throw Louisiana in there
- 26:18as well with the Louisiana Derby.
- 26:20Is there is there one that you're kind of downplaying?
- 26:23I'm I'm throwing out the Ark, Arkansas, the Oakland horses,
- 26:27right or wrong, that's where I'm at at this point.
- 26:28Can't bet them all. How about?
- 26:30How about? You.
- 26:32Yeah, I wasn't in love with the Louisiana Derby this year.
- 26:35I thought it was more just the horses that were still running
- 26:38at the end rather than anybody actually flying.
- 26:41I mean, if you think about it, a maiden ran second.
- 26:43Publisher still doesn't want to race.
- 26:46So how good a race could it have been?
- 26:48Now, Tastic again, he's getting better, but he's gotten up into
- 26:52the middle 90s now and that's not going to get it done on
- 26:56Saturday. You're going to have to run like
- 26:57105 to 110 buyer would be my guess.
- 27:00And really the only horse that's capable of it.
- 27:02The only horse that's done it is journalism.
- 27:04So that's one of the many reasons I like him.
- 27:07He's got the numbers, he's got the form, he's got everything.
- 27:10And I'm actually going to recommend a prop bet at
- 27:12BetOnline dot AG that I love over under on length of victory.
- 27:17It's over a length and a half. I'm going over journalism runs
- 27:21like I think he does think he's going to, he's going to win by 5
- 27:23lengths. So I'm going with the over
- 27:26length and a half. And the cool thing is, you can
- 27:28make that bet and be wrong about, but any of the other
- 27:32nineteen wins by a leg that still wasn't.
- 27:34Yeah, nice. Yeah, it's it's a great idea and
- 27:37I'm looking at some of the props that are available at bed
- 27:39online. 1 jump talk to me. So will there be a Triple Crown
- 27:42winner? Well, you get a four to one on
- 27:43the yes, but a horse to win the Derby and the Preakness plus 357
- 27:48to two. Boy, it feels like you just
- 27:50grabbed that one, put it in your back pocket.
- 27:52But I thought the most intriguing one.
- 27:54Will there be a photo finish? It's six to one.
- 27:57How often do we get photo finished?
- 27:58And now you don't believe just gonna have the Derby in the
- 28:00Derby. How often does that happen guys?
- 28:03Unusual. Yeah, last year.
- 28:05That's why last year was so awesome for Derby 150, right?
- 28:08We got a three horse photo. I know one guy who's rooting
- 28:11against it. And you can relate to this.
- 28:12Larry Comas wants no parts of a photo thing.
- 28:15Yeah, that's for sure. Yeah.
- 28:17I mean, it's hard enough to call horse races without trying to
- 28:19call winners when they're coming down the stretch together.
- 28:22Yeah. And you'll love.
- 28:23This is another one of the fun props that bet online.
- 28:25How about this one? Will the winning jockey name end
- 28:29in AZ? And so you have the Ortiz
- 28:32brothers, you have Johnny Velasquez.
- 28:34We just talked about Nick Juarez Hernandez.
- 28:38It's good. Yeah.
- 28:40It's because he got five of the horses.
- 28:42The jockey's name ends in Z, so it's it's great and.
- 28:46What was that price? It's winning horse or jockey
- 28:52ending in AZ so you got the Ortiz brothers, Johnny V Nick
- 28:56Juarez. Iron, and that is.
- 28:59And you have the horse Rodriguez.
- 29:00Oh sure. You have the 459-1013 and 17 six
- 29:05horses. Yes to that is 3 to 2.
- 29:08No is one to two. It's just a a fun prop edit that
- 29:12online and I love all these problems.
- 29:13Yeah, I do too. That's good stuff.
- 29:15Last thing for you, Dick, is who's your long shot play that
- 29:19we haven't mentioned yet? We know you like journalism.
- 29:21Is there a horse that you're going to have underneath and
- 29:24maybe on a few of your tickets you'll put it on top and hope
- 29:26for, you know, a a bomber. Who do you like?
- 29:29Give me a long shot. Yeah, my best exact to play is
- 29:328-9 journalism over Burnham Square.
- 29:35Burnham Square is 12 to one on the morning line.
- 29:37I'm hoping he goes higher than that.
- 29:39And in these 20 horse fields, it's sometimes it's
- 29:42unpredictable about what these prices are going to be.
- 29:44And another of course, I'd like maybe to be in the top 4 is the
- 29:48three final gambit. He's 30 to 1 and I think he's
- 29:52going to ride the rail very similar to last year's winner.
- 29:56I think the jockey's just going to stay there and he'll be
- 29:59coming from way back and hopefully he's coming up enough
- 30:01to get some piece of the action at the end.
- 30:03Any love for the I mean all of these horses are, you know,
- 30:06hundreds of thousands of dollars except there's #19 chunk of gold
- 30:11who could have been purchased for $2500.
- 30:13You like the gelding you said in Burnham Square, but how about
- 30:16the chunk of gold who you know all the other horses in the
- 30:19gate? There was some well bred ones.
- 30:22This one got was purchased for a song almost.
- 30:25Give me a chance. Yeah, that.
- 30:27Yeah, it's interesting. Louisiana Derby, we were just
- 30:30talking about that and I mentioned the main that that was
- 30:34actually the Arkansas. It's more confusing with all
- 30:38these sources. Look, it's an awesome story,
- 30:41right? But it could have been
- 30:42purchased, was purchased originally for 2500 runs.
- 30:45Second in the Louisiana Derby, second in the Risen Star again
- 30:49of that race. But the cool thing, the horse
- 30:51had finished third. Instant replay came right back
- 30:53to win a Preakness prep at at Oakland Park, suggesting maybe
- 30:57the Louisiana Derby was OK. And how can you not root for a
- 31:01horse trainer's bet, though, east and West.
- 31:04It'd just be very cool if this horse gets that's a way to get
- 31:07there. Yeah, Riseview the what was the
- 31:09guy from New Mexico that bind that bird?
- 31:13Vandeman Overnight 2 trailer van.
- 31:16Analogy. It really is.
- 31:18Absolutely. That's what's wild about this,
- 31:21you know, after Rich strike three years ago, I know.
- 31:23How do you How do you know anything?
- 31:25Nope, can be great. Love it Dick.
- 31:26Good stuff. Enjoy the Derby.
- 31:28Good luck to you. Thank you Dick.
- 31:29Girardi BetOnline dot AG. Thank you, Dick.
- 31:33You got it. Thanks.
- 31:34Guys, yeah, good to talk to you. A quick look at the 151st
- 31:37Kentucky Derby. Good stuff out of Dick Girardi
- 31:40and everybody's on the favorite. Yeah, boy, that that buzz
- 31:44started. I mean, it was the first horse
- 31:46that I heard about months ago, and I do.
- 31:48But journalism, yeah, you know, I get it.
- 31:51It's people cut in that walk all right, like that one.
- 31:55He looks good. All right.
- 31:55We'll just kind of throw it there and I wonder if that'll
- 31:58start to pull back a little bit, but we'll see how that.
- 32:00I had a question for you all the baby staples.
- 32:04Did not get there, not. A horse this year?
- 32:06Did they have anything close? Yeah, they were on the trail for
- 32:08a while, but just their horses weren't peeking at the right
- 32:11time. So And they've had a phenomenal
- 32:13success getting to this race because it is not easy.
- 32:16Well, and that's the crazy thing.
- 32:17When we talked to Luch, seemingly almost every year is
- 32:21you always relay to us how difficult this is.
- 32:25Phenomenal. Yes, you got to have money to be
- 32:27able to make that happen. However, even with money, there
- 32:31are no guarantees. No, you got to look at him with
- 32:32your eye and think, this one's got a chance.
- 32:34His confirmation looks good. When they're like the blowing
- 32:37gelding. No, when they're yearlings,
- 32:39Yearling. Yeah, gelding's got, as you
- 32:41know, what's. Cut off.
- 32:41Oh, OK. Yeah, and there's one in the
- 32:43field. Oh really?
- 32:45There is one in the field? What's that one?
- 32:47Burnham square #9. Burnham Square, Yeah, it's
- 32:50probably my wife's gonna. Take only one that's not intact.
- 32:52Burnham Square. So Final Gambit, that was the
- 32:55one on my list. I had Final Gambit, I had Grande
- 32:59and who was my third that I liked initially.
- 33:01I'll have to take one more peek. But if I still like journalism.
- 33:05Like you, I say. I'm not betting the.
- 33:07Favorite not betting the favorite?
- 33:08Not not in this race. I'll have them on a few tickets.
- 33:11Kind of half a dude. This is the race where you can
- 33:12score. Man, what'd you say you got
- 33:15three years ago? 2000 we hit the exacta.
- 33:17On a $2.00 bet. On a $1.00 bet, yeah, not lucky.
- 33:21Backed into it. Luck.
- 33:23Sometimes better to be lucky than good, right?
- 33:25That's for sure. We were that day.
- 33:26We'll take a time by. Let's get Trent some luck with
- 33:29his sports picks tonight. NBA on this agenda.
- 33:33Yes, four games in the NHL, Not too much under the lights in
- 33:37MLB. By the way, your Chicago Cubs
- 33:41have chased Paul Skeens and Colin Ray.
- 33:44What a story. 6 innings, gave up two earned runs, 73 pitches.
- 33:49But the story again is the Cubs in their bats.
- 33:51Swanson home run, Tucker home run, Suzuki home run, another
- 33:56Suzuki home run. They're leading the Pirates 5 to
- 34:002 as they look to take this three-game series, two games to
- 34:04one. Good stuff out of the Cubbies.
- 34:06See if they can close things down.
- 34:08The Pirates are batting with two men on and nobody else in the
- 34:11bottom of the eighth. It's Miller and Condon.
- 34:14Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller.
- 34:16Condon, welcome back. 5 minutes before we get out of here, 10
- 34:20minutes before the top of the hour when Heather and Lucas take
- 34:24over. Cubs bullpen.
- 34:25Doing Cubs bullpen things again here this afternoon, Trent.
- 34:29Well, they still have to lead the Cubs, but it's now 532 out.
- 34:32Bottom of the eighth, runners on 1st and 3rd.
- 34:35Hodge is still pitching. I hope they don't blow Collin
- 34:38race start. I mean, he was.
- 34:40What did you think he would? I thought he was finished.
- 34:42I thought, what a waste. That's the best you can do.
- 34:45I thought he was a #7. Yeah, OK.
- 34:47That's good. He's a guy that long reliever.
- 34:49Yep, somebody's getting shelled early.
- 34:50Put him in, let him meet some innings.
- 34:52And he's not even your first option for that #5 guy.
- 34:54He's your next. Guy after the guy?
- 34:56Yep. Dead wrong he's been.
- 34:58Great. He's been great so far.
- 35:00And he's the 9 ones that makes him even better.
- 35:01Oh yes, well that goes a long way.
- 35:05So I had somebody called during the break.
- 35:07Well, then the Cubs got out of it.
- 35:09Well done. We never said it.
- 35:10We love you Porter Hodge, big fans of the bullpen mentioned
- 35:14about your your first quarter. What are you betting first
- 35:18quarter unders. First quarter, no, just money
- 35:21lines. Money lines, gotcha.
- 35:22Yeah and said been tailing, it's not going well.
- 35:25You got another one for today. You're going to keep riding
- 35:27that. Or going right back to the
- 35:28Clippers? Absolutely.
- 35:29Are you? Yes, right back at it.
- 35:31We went one in one on those first quarter plays last night.
- 35:34That means you're losing juice. Let's try it again.
- 35:37We're going to play it tonight with the Clippers that are
- 35:39laying 2 in fact in this one for the first quarter in a must win
- 35:43situation back at home. This one trends.
- 35:47So that is in fact my only NBA pick.
- 35:50Jack also complained about the Ankeny traffic, by the way.
- 35:52Oh my God. The Ankeny traffic.
- 35:54Holy crap that. What's up there?
- 35:56Entire city's under construction.
- 35:58Wow. I mean, you guys need well,
- 36:00it's. Growing like crazy.
- 36:01I mean for starters. I will tell you what, we went up
- 36:03last week to do our draft up at the chicken coop.
- 36:06So I live in the middle of town, like Middle West of Boyd.
- 36:09I can get basically everywhere in 15 minutes except for Ankeny.
- 36:14You guys are so far separated out there.
- 36:16Yeah, compared to, for me, the rest of the metro.
- 36:20And every time I go up there, man, it's a hall.
- 36:22Stay away from Delaware. And especially where you live,
- 36:25well, that's. Yeah.
- 36:26You live basically Polk City. Well, that.
- 36:29Aims. But for me, 'cause I get off the
- 36:32Interstate, I'm home, baby. I don't have to make my way
- 36:34through Ankeny. Yes, I'm home.
- 36:36I don't know many of the statewide audience to say, what
- 36:38are these guys talking? About.
- 36:39Ankeny What are the fastest growing suburbs in the country?
- 36:41In the country, not in the state, in the country.
- 36:44And we have two of them, two of the top ten, Waukee and Ankeny,
- 36:47both are two high schools. So is Waukee under construction
- 36:50too? The road work.
- 36:51Not not at that long. Last one.
- 36:53We got some over there too. Hwy. 69 is just getting just
- 36:56torn up everywhere anyway. We got to get this stuff done
- 36:59'cause guess what? Yes, we got winners here too.
- 37:01Yes, we do Cascade IA for Colin. All right, So just one game
- 37:06there and you're going to bet the Clippers, you're going to
- 37:08bet the first quarter money? Line -2.
- 37:13Minus. Lay the two lay.
- 37:14The two gotcha. I'm going to play Vegas tonight.
- 37:17I told you, I'm just what I've seen of this series.
- 37:20They're just better. Big price though -162 but we'll
- 37:24lay it with Vegas and two baseball 1's already underway
- 37:27and we're already losing check. Put that on your list.
- 37:30The Rangers, they're down 1, nothing.
- 37:32We are on Cleveland though they're up to nothing against my
- 37:35twins as they go into the 6th inning.
- 37:36There, Texas has the A's. Yes, jump out early 1 nothing
- 37:41lead as a Tyler Malley former twin on the Speaking of former
- 37:46twins, I saw that the Reds sent down their closer down to the
- 37:51minor leagues who was an All Star two years ago and now
- 37:54closing and in fact he's tied for the league lead and saves is
- 37:58Emiliano Pagan over the last four.
- 38:01Years, dude. How many times we talked
- 38:03yesterday about the walk off losses?
- 38:05He had to be, at least. Five of them.
- 38:07Oh for sure, he was responsible for most of them.
- 38:10These are closer. He has, I think it was 11
- 38:14straight appearances without giving up a run.
- 38:16He's got a 15 inning scoreless streak that he's got going on.
- 38:20He sucked for the better part of a decade, terrible, and here he
- 38:24is faking it out. So Cubs fans, that's the team
- 38:27chasing you. And I believe the only team that
- 38:29can track them down is the Reds. You think so?
- 38:31You don't. You're not buying the Brew Crew.
- 38:32No, I'm not buying the Pirates, obviously.
- 38:34The Cardinals, No. That.
- 38:36Is the team and with it. Well, look, and I I like buddy
- 38:41auto pagadas. They're close.
- 38:42Yeah, well, that's feel like. There's good news if you're a
- 38:43Cubs fan. I like their young pitching.
- 38:46I do. Obviously, we love their
- 38:47shortstop. Delacruz is a star.
- 38:50Gavin Lux is the decent player. Youth.
- 38:54I love their manager. I mean, that that was maybe the
- 38:56biggest upgrade that they made all year.
- 38:58And Terry Francona. Yeah, I think the Cubs are home
- 39:02free. I refreshed the ESPN.com front
- 39:05page is a weird oh, it's not there anymore.
- 39:08Down to the at the time that I refreshed it earlier, the
- 39:12Shifley News was at the top of the top headline rundown.
- 39:15What's it feel like to have your Jets at the top of the board for
- 39:18ESPN? Yeah, it would be like that.
- 39:20Not the news you want to read, no doubt about.
- 39:22It so have you seen anything more?
- 39:24Is it this is a game six only entry or?
- 39:26No, there's no, there's upper body.
- 39:29Yeah. No, he's not.
- 39:30He's in concussion protocol. He got his bell rung.
- 39:34And coming back on Sunday and Sunday.
- 39:37Maybe. Doubtful.
- 39:39They didn't even get on the plane.
- 39:44I feel for you. Never easy.
- 39:45Oh well, team's back. That'll do it for us.
- 39:49Drive is coming up. Frank Caliendo coming up in 90.
