- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean. Here it is Thursday, it is the
- 0:1614th of September. And I have got to say that I'm
- 0:20delighted, friend, that as a birthday present to me, you have
- 0:24decided to join me and read not just the next chapter of Isaiah,
- 0:29but today we start a whole new book of the Bible.
- 0:33We start to read through the book of Acts and what a
- 0:37crackerjack book this is. As we see the Holy Spirit coming
- 0:41to God's disciples, we see the church start to grow and spread,
- 0:47and we see these brave men and women who speak out their faith
- 0:52and then whose heritage you and I celebrate our Christian life.
- 0:57What a wonderful, wonderful book.
- 0:59This is, of course, the second of the two volumes that are
- 1:02written by Luke, that wonderful communicator, that physician, as
- 1:07he writes to convince his friend that Jesus is the Lord.
- 1:12So yes, this is a biased work. Yes, this is a selective
- 1:16collection of all of the things which happened to put together
- 1:20an argument to say that Jesus is in fact God's Son.
- 1:24Jesus did live, He died, He rose again, and his spirit came in
- 1:29power to begin the work of his church.
- 1:33Who is the active person in this book?
- 1:36It is not Peter, it is not Paul. The active character in this
- 1:41book is Jesus and his spirit and we will hear his fingerprints
- 1:47everywhere. And so with that anymore pre
- 1:51waffle from me, let us dive right into this as we pick up
- 1:55the story where Luke's gospel left off.
- 1:58Reading together Act chapter one.
- 2:11In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything
- 2:16Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up to
- 2:20heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions
- 2:24through the Holy Spirit during the 40 days after he suffered
- 2:28and died, He appeared to the apostles from time to time, and
- 2:32he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive and
- 2:37he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
- 2:40Once, when he was eating with them, he commanded them, do not
- 2:44leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised.
- 2:49As I told you before, John baptized with water.
- 2:53But in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy
- 2:57Spirit. So when the apostles were with
- 3:01Jesus, they kept asking him, Lord, has the time come for you
- 3:05to free Israel and restore our Kingdom, He replied.
- 3:09The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and
- 3:13times, and they are not for you to know.
- 3:16But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
- 3:21and you will be my witnesses, telling people about me
- 3:26everywhere, in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria,
- 3:31and to the ends of the earth. After saying this, he was taken
- 3:36up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no
- 3:40longer see him as they strained to see him rising into heaven, 2
- 3:45white robed men suddenly stood among them.
- 3:48Men of Galilee, they said. Why are you standing here
- 3:52staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you
- 3:56into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same
- 4:01way you saw him go. Then the apostles returned to
- 4:05Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a
- 4:09mile. When they arrived, they went to
- 4:11the upstairs room of the house where they were staying.
- 4:14Here are the names of those who were present Peter, John, James,
- 4:21Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James, son
- 4:27of Alpheus, Simon de Zealot, and Judas, son of James.
- 4:33They all met together and were constantly united in prayer,
- 4:37along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, several other women and
- 4:41the brothers of Jesus. During this time, when about 120
- 4:47believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and
- 4:50addressed them. Brothers, he said the scriptures
- 4:54had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who
- 4:58arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by
- 5:02the Holy Spirit speaking through King David.
- 5:06Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us.
- 5:11Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his
- 5:13treachery, falling head first. There his body split open,
- 5:18spilling out all his intestines. The news of his death spread to
- 5:23all the people of Jerusalem and they gave the place the Aramaic
- 5:26name Akaldema, which means field of blood, Peter continued.
- 5:34This was written in the book of Psalms where it says let his
- 5:38home become desolate with no one living in it.
- 5:42It also says let someone else take its possession.
- 5:46So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among
- 5:50the men who are here with us. The entire time we were
- 5:54traveling with the Lord Jesus from the time he was baptized by
- 5:57John until the day he was taken from us.
- 6:01Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus
- 6:05resurrection. So they nominated 2 men Joseph
- 6:10called Besabbas, also known as Justice and Matthias.
- 6:15Then they all prayed. Oh Lord, you know every heart.
- 6:21Show us which of these men you have chosen as an apostle to
- 6:25replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone
- 6:29where he belongs. Then they cast lots, and
- 6:33Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other
- 6:37eleven. You are such a present, God
- 6:51Jesus, as we hear you walking around and talking with our
- 6:56brothers and sisters, with with people who live just 2000 years
- 7:00ago in that part of the world. It blows our mind that you, our
- 7:06Holy God, would come and choose to live amongst us.
- 7:11Thank you that you have given us this Holy Spirit, this Helper,
- 7:16and that you give us the task of sharing your love and living at
- 7:21your mission in the world around us.
- 7:24Thank you that you have given us your Helper, the Spirit that
- 7:28lives inside of us, the greatest gift you could ever give us.
- 7:32Your presence in us. Empower us.
- 7:37Change us. Shape us so that we would be
- 7:41true to your mission of love and forgiveness and truth in our
- 7:46lives. You are wonderful and we worship
- 7:50you, and it's in Your name that we pray Jesus.
- 7:54Amen.
