- 0:07Speaker 1: The North Florida Sports Network.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Basic losing is over the North Florida Sports Network.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, welcome back.
- 0:27Speaker 1: It's the Instant Reaction on the North Florida Sports Network For the first time in 2024, the win for the Noles as they beat the Cal Golden Bears 14-9.
- 0:39Speaker 1: That's right the Cal Golden Bears 14-9 that's right, the Cal Golden Bears yeah, and give them their first loss of the season feels great yeah, it does you know?
- 0:59Speaker 1: You feel yourself turning into Randy Quaid from Major League 2, but you want the team to win.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You can't get to 12 wins until you get that first one.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I got Jimmy Reno on the line, all right, what are your initial thoughts?
- 1:21Speaker 2: Glad, you won, glad we won glad you won, glad we won.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Did not expect to score more than 7 points the way the offense was going.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Beautiful pass by DJ.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah spots man, they showed just when they think, alright, okay, here they had a drive going.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And then it's just like, oh, penalty or drop, pass or take a sack or miss the wide open receiver.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Yeah, still a lot.
- 1:56Speaker 2: For me, dan, just watching four games of this, it feels exactly like when he was trying to make McKenzie Milton work in 21.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Right, and like the offense doesn't look any different, in terms of the plays being run, than it did with Jordan Travis.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I mean dude.
- 2:19Speaker 1: It looks bad at certain points yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It looks horrible.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I mean you have players that aren't capable of running that offense.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Trying to run that offense, dj can't operate like that.
- 2:29Speaker 1: The defense played well, the defense played hard.
- 2:32Speaker 2: That's two weeks in a row.
- 2:34Speaker 1: They played smarter this game.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They did that penalty on Edwin Joseph was awful, he was going for the fumble.
- 2:43Speaker 2: We got a different broadcaster.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Finally, Ocho is finally a little more positive.
- 2:50Speaker 1: A little more positive of a person that's his style.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah, he didn't hold a grudge against FSU for some unknown reason, the way Louis Riddick does.
- 3:02Speaker 2: But the biggest thing to me with the offense is the play.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You take the fourth and seven, for instance, where he didn't kick the field goal.
- 3:13Speaker 2: What's up with that?
- 3:16Speaker 1: That was just Like you got a guy who hasn't missed all year.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Who's?
- 3:21Speaker 2: Right, who can?
- 3:21Speaker 1: kick the long.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Who's made it from 59.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Like and with this kind of game, this one is yeah, who's made it from 59.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And with this kind of game, this one is yeah, it's a little bit beyond the 34-yard line, 35, something like that it's worth it, you know you talk about the analytics.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, the analytics said to kick the field goal Based on the kicker you have and what he's done.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's what they considered as well, and you know, know, they went out there.
- 3:47Speaker 2: They had a play that they liked.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Right, it was wide open and dj physically cannot do that he cannot avoid the free rush by enough time to hit douglas and stride over the middle.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That was a touchdown right if he makes that throw, that's a touchdown and it's it's fitting that square peg into a round hole.
- 4:08Speaker 2: That's just never going to work, you know, and at times he'll throw a beautiful pass, which he did get to win the game you know, and we'll be able to run on some teams which we were able to run tonight, should have done more alex atkins came back, the offensive line looked a lot better now they look like complete garbage the first three weeks.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So you didn't have much to improve off of.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You didn't have Darius Washington against Memphis.
- 4:32Speaker 2: He was back.
- 4:33Speaker 2: That's your best offensive lineman, whether or not he's playing out of position.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's still your best guy.
- 4:39Speaker 2: They played better.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I got to assume that having him back on the sidelines probably added to that, but you know you've had three games to to see everything that doesn't work in terms of the running game.
- 4:53Speaker 2: So they probably called a much tighter game and in terms of the running plays that they were doing.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Um, the wide receiver screens need to go away forever as long as you're going to trot DJ out there.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Right, the QB read.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's just not.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It doesn't develop.
- 5:08Speaker 1: It's too slow developing.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Yeah, like some of the, RPO, I guess, when it's like I guess it's Streaker down the middle, I mean, maybe he has that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Oh, he did.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm about tired of this horizontal pass game with him because it's too slow it's too slow to develop, even when it is you're what?
- 5:26Speaker 2: three yards, yeah, and there's.
- 5:28Speaker 2: There's no threat of him running the ball, most likely you're gonna lose two.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think jaylen brown's still averaging negative yards on catches, I mean yeah, yeah, I mean, that's just something that needs to go away forever if you're gonna keep trying that guy out there.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Um, he needs like, honestly, you got to just start watching Oregon State tape and pulling stuff from that.
- 5:52Speaker 1: You know he threw five touchdowns against this same team last year with Oregon.
- 5:56Speaker 2: State.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Granted, they had a great running back, but still, they had a good running back.
- 6:01Speaker 1: What gives man?
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's a great question.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think that it was an offense you know, a passing offense that he was actually fit to run Right, you know you're not taking as many free read chances.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I just you know when he's got to make quick decisions and split you know facing pressure.
- 6:23Speaker 1: This offense needs someone quick and agile that can run.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, right, and I think everything about B vj is just a step too slow for this type of offense to be out there on that island immediately.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You're gonna have to face pressure immediately and read it and he just you know they did make some like he he's just makes.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It was a terrible pick.
- 6:46Speaker 2: You're down in the red zone right, you're gonna take control of the game.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You'd have to get a field goal there.
- 6:51Speaker 1: You know it's like you.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You that's when you need to be a guy that's been in college forever and you need to be the experienced leader on an 0-3 team a chance to go up two possessions early.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And what kind of game that was.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'm glad they won.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But that should have been.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That shouldn't have been as close as it was.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It should have at least been eight points per 10.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The way you came out in the first half on defense and running the football.
- 7:16Speaker 2: You should have built the lead in the first half.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Right and that's good, though I want to still assess that I was happy with the effort on both sides of the ball, as opposed to just one side.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I was happy with the effort.
- 7:27Speaker 2: The offense played hard they're just not any good Right Overall.
- 7:34Speaker 2: They have some, if they can run the ball.
- 7:35Speaker 1: they're going to need to run the ball and I mean, I don't know.
- 7:41Speaker 1: You got to catch the damn ball too, warlock.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Yeah, dj's not getting any help with that.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You get a seven-yard run and then you call a nice play that gets your tight end, which would be like 20 yards down the middle of the field, throws a good ball and he drops it and then the next thing you know, dj presses and takes a loss.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Well, now it's third.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Now you punt and you punt.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It's third and three.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Then you lose three yards and you punt, and those have been happening all year, so it's good to see the defense come back and just let them be made allow this offense to be able to do that.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Um, yeah, the defense's problems are just communication.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Yeah, experience, right?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Um, you know they're not going to be that dominant offensive line that everybody thought they were going to be, but they should still be able to keep you in games.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think the expectations now at least, have changed for everyone after the first three games.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I think, the word was around.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean 1-11 is a possibility.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I mean that set in.
- 8:48Speaker 2: It's still a possibility.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I mean no, it's not.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Two wins is looking really, really, really like almost as a guarantee as your bottom floor, provided you don't lose to Charleston Southern somehow.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So you're not going to be a one win team let's go over the numbers real quick.
- 9:05Speaker 1: DJ Uwe on the night finished 16 of 27 for 177, but for 177 yards, one touchdown, which was a great pass, and one pick, which was a terrible pass.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So, just about what you expect from him.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I mean, that's like an average DJ Uwe line.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But the difference in this game was the running game to a philly 17 carries, 80 yards.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Cam davis seven carries, 25 yards.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Dj.
- 9:39Speaker 1: We ungle away had nine carries, 11 yards.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But you know a lot of that sacks.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And then they down the ball at the end in the shotgun.
- 9:45Speaker 2: So yeah, um, I I mean this is a game that florida state defensive line won right.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Pretty much that was the story of the game one.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's about time they, they needed to step up there was no that had underperformed more right, it wasn't just the start.
- 10:07Speaker 2: You saw some of the young guys getting in there, a good bunch man Lyons, sampson, grady Kelly, but Josh Farmer was, you know.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Well, I was good to see.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Farmer played well.
- 10:23Speaker 2: It was a Marvin Jones.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Jr siding.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, he got a couple sacks of his own, four sacks for the defense in the fourth quarter.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they pinned their ears back.
- 10:34Speaker 2: They knew that and, and you know this is, I know that guy scooted for a 28 yard first down or whatever it was, but that guy's not, he's not mobile, not a guy that's gonna kill you with his legs, no, so that's somebody that they should listen.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Man, they got the way, they got the win.
- 10:50Speaker 2: They, they contain jay not who's really good back.
- 10:51Speaker 1: You could see the potential in that kid.
- 10:52Speaker 1: He's gonna play on sunday.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they did a really good back.
- 10:54Speaker 1: You could see the potential in that kid.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He's going to play on Sunday.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah, they did a really good job against the right he got a few runs where you're just like damn, and then they would step up and make the adjustment.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And that's what you got to do against a guy like that.
- 11:07Speaker 1: That shows me that they're fighting.
- 11:09Speaker 1: He finished the game.
- 11:10Speaker 1: 16 rushes for 73 yards.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a win you don't want that guy going off.
- 11:18Speaker 1: A break, yeah, they didn't let any break off.
- 11:20Speaker 1: They didn't.
- 11:21Speaker 1: All his biggest runs were like 15 yards, so I think his long was no, he had one for 23 but for, not for touchdown, and and you got the big play we've been at.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I was like this where's the big play?
- 11:36Speaker 1: Dj is supposed to have a good ball.
- 11:38Speaker 1: You know, if you can finally start running the ball, maybe you can get past the defense.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And you did just that he hit Ja'Kai Douglas down the sideline.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Oh, that one to Benson was even more open.
- 11:50Speaker 1: He's got to hit that and Benson can do that more.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He's that fast.
- 11:54Speaker 1: So they didn't even just go and you got to hit that.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I mean, you got to put that out there.
- 12:07Speaker 2: You almost need to underthrow that.
- 12:08Speaker 2: If anything, right, or you know, don't throw it to the opposite side of the field that the kid's running on, right.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I mean, I get it.
- 12:12Speaker 2: You want to throw away from the DB, but come on, man.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Well, he made up for it with the past.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Well, right, beautiful, that was a beautiful ball.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Jakai ran right under it and that was the winning touchdown they tried to give for everybody, for all of them.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I mean, that's a lot of that team was feeling a lot of heat.
- 12:31Speaker 2: You know they still, they still looked really bad in a lot of areas we're gonna look at it again yeah, I mean you know there's, there's ugly stuff there's, you know a few, well more than a few, just absolute shit calls that.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I mean you know, yeah, but you know well, let's say, cal definitely came ready, ready to fight man, yeah, that that was not a team, that was not chippy, no, it's a smart team.
- 12:56Speaker 2: They were smart team.
- 12:57Speaker 1: They.
- 12:57Speaker 1: They have players, they have the.
- 13:00Speaker 1: They.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I mean they led the damn nation in interceptions and they always have a good secondary is really good, yeah, really good.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Really smart they're.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You know they're experienced players, but I had a basic losing is over.
- 13:15Speaker 1: That's what matters most tonight.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Miami beat USF.
- 13:21Speaker 1: We're not going to really talk about that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Usf can hang tough with their team for about a half.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Oh man, that guy's a good coach man, He'll get a shit.
- 13:34Speaker 2: He may be back at Tennessee once Hypo gets the Oklahoma job.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Tennessee took care of Oklahoma.
- 13:40Speaker 1: We'll react to those games on Football Monday, but React.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You know I'm looking at the schedule now, man.
- 13:48Speaker 2: You're seeing some teams look kind of beatable.
- 13:50Speaker 2: You know, maybe Florida State can figure something out to get a few more wins on the schedule.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, as horrible as we were feeling yesterday, thinking 0-12 was an actual, legit possibility.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Started wondering, but there was some fight.
- 14:08Speaker 1: There's still a lot of holes.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Hopefully they can improve.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to go.
- 14:16Speaker 1: you got it, bruce yeah, they take it on the road next week fmu baby.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Oh man, I think it'd be good for him for eight o'clock.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yep, I might be able to make that whole game damn.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Feel good, man, feel good yeah, it was nerve-wracking and it was painful to watch at some points yeah, but I just you know, you keep telling yourself well, hey, cows three, and I don't, they went into auburn, right, right.
- 14:54Speaker 1: And our defense is playing well and we just can't screw it up.
- 14:58Speaker 1: You know like don't he made the pick.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It was terrible, but he didn't do it again.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Nobody fumbled the ball it's a quality win man.
- 15:06Speaker 2: You beat an fbs team, a conference opponent.
- 15:09Speaker 2: It's not like you've beaten some fbs.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Hell yeah, man that's something to build on.
- 15:14Speaker 1: It's exciting man from where I was thinking, mean it could hopefully get fire lit and hopefully they can build off something, because they're not.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I said the schedule.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I thought hopefully get a little lighter here with SMU coming up, who's not as good as we thought, but we'll see.
- 15:34Speaker 1: We'll look at that a little further.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Maybe good for this team to get away from home for a minute.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I couldn't agree more.
- 15:42Speaker 1: The stadium's under construction.
- 15:44Speaker 1: It just doesn't feel right.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I was watching some clips of the pregame.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Granted we're 0-3,.
- 15:51Speaker 1: but when you got half the damn stadium just empty the cement looking stuff, it's a weird atmosphere.
- 15:57Speaker 2: The fan base is very bitchy.
- 15:58Speaker 1: And again, they haven't mentioned it once on the broadcast.
- 16:01Speaker 1: No, they're not going to mention it.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I don't understand it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: They're not doing it for human interest.
- 16:04Speaker 2: You saw that broadcast.
- 16:05Speaker 2: It was nothing but talking about the Mendoza kid and his family, right the entire.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Thing.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That's one thing.
- 16:12Speaker 1: If you notice, man, there is nothing about FSU university, anything off the field we're not doing.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Human interest, nope, it is straight yeah.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Because you were wondering when you see that and it's like, well, they don't even say, hey, they're renovating the stadium, because that means they might have to talk about something that they're doing Right Exactly.
- 16:34Speaker 2: We won't talk about money in that next year.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Well, we got it.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I thought Archie did a good job, yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll talk about it all.
- 16:40Speaker 1: We'll look at the game again.
- 16:41Speaker 1: We got NFL tomorrow and we'll talk to you on a football Monday right here.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Right we go.
- 16:47Speaker 2: We call that North Florida.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Sports Network the nose win baby.
