- 0:04.com for more sports history. On August 31, 1969,
- 0:08the Philadelphia Phillies went to Dodger Stadium
- 0:10to face the Los Angeles Dodgers for a Sunday
- 0:12afternoon game. The Phillies were a below 500
- 0:15team and were managed by George Myatt, who had
- 0:17taken over as interim manager after the firing
- 0:19of Bob Skinner. The Dodgers were led by veteran
- 0:21manager Walt Alston in his 16th season. The starting
- 0:25pitchers for this game involved 11 -game winner
- 0:27Rick Wise for the Phillies against Bill Singer,
- 0:29who entered the game with a 16 -8 record for
- 0:31the Dodgers. This audio recording is from the
- 0:33Los Angeles Radio Broadcast featuring announcers
- 0:35Vince Scully and Jerry Doggett. the Dodgers and
- 0:49the Phillies from beautiful Dodger Stadium. And
- 0:51now for the play -by -play, here's Vince Dilling.
- 0:53Thank you, Jerry. Hi, everybody. And a very pleasant
- 0:56Sunday to you, wherever you may be. It has come
- 0:58up bright and shiny at Dodger Stadium in the
- 1:00third and final game between the Dodgers and
- 1:03the Phillies with Terry Harmon to start it off
- 1:05at shortstop and leading it off, then Johnny
- 1:07Briggs and Richie Allen. Bill Singer looks in
- 1:11to get his first iron. Bill Sudeikis returning
- 1:13to the starting lineup today at third base. And
- 1:16the first pitch to Harmon, a ground ball to Wills.
- 1:18Morey is up with it. Clips the first in time
- 1:20for the hour. One pitch and one away. For the
- 1:24first time in a couple of days, that ground ball
- 1:28in the shortstop area took true house. The Dodgers
- 1:31have changed the infield a little bit. It had
- 1:33gotten just too hard, and the baseballs were
- 1:36taking erratic house. So they have softened it
- 1:38just a little. And that ball rolls straight and
- 1:41true to Wills. Here's Johnny Briggs. Singer into
- 1:44the windup, delivers, and the pitch high and
- 1:46away. Ball one. To the groundkeeper's credit,
- 1:48of course, they follow orders. They had it hardened,
- 1:51and then were told to loosen it just a dab. Here's
- 1:56the 1 -0 pitch to Johnny Briggs, left -hand batter.
- 1:58He takes the strike, and they count one and one.
- 2:06Bill Singer trying to win his 17th. Into the
- 2:09windup and a 1 -1 pitch on the way, a fastball
- 2:12outside, ball two, 2 -1. You don't think about
- 2:15it. Naturally, you come to the ballpark and see
- 2:17a game. But among other things, Bill Singer's
- 2:20right foot is heavily padded. It really fills
- 2:24up that shoe. Here's a 2 -1 pitch. Pops in the
- 2:27air, around the mound. Singer turns to direct
- 2:29traffic. Wills comes over near Sudeikis, but
- 2:32Sudeikis walks in front of Wills and makes the
- 2:34catch. So Briggs, a pop fly, two out, and the
- 2:40batter will be Richie Allen. Richie Allen, who
- 2:52wakes him up around the league when he comes
- 2:54up to the plate. Last night, Allen struck out
- 2:57four times, and the crowd really ate him up.
- 2:59Let's see how he goes today against Singer. Bill's
- 3:02first pitch, big curve. Swung on and missed,
- 3:051 -1. Allen with 29 home runs, 66 RBIs. In 88
- 3:11games, he has struck out 110 times. Now the strike
- 3:15one pitch, the same breaking ball in there, strike
- 3:18two. Andy Olsen, the plate umpire, with Barlick,
- 3:22Vargo, and Kibler out on the line. 0 -2 to Richie
- 3:27Allen. Singer ready in the strike two pitch,
- 3:31way outside, ball one. When Bill Singer pushes
- 3:35off the rubber, he has a tendency to pinch his
- 3:37right toe. Sandy Koufax had that problem. Jim
- 3:41Bunning does. And unless that toe and foot is
- 3:43heavily padded, he can really hurt himself. The
- 3:46one -two breaking ball got him swinging. So Allen
- 3:49has struck out five consecutive times. Four last
- 3:54night and now today. Phillies are gone in order
- 3:56at the end of the half of the inning. The Phillies
- 3:58nothing and the Dodgers coming up. You know,
- 4:14it wasn't long ago when the Dodgers were known
- 4:16as the Bums and they went to some ridiculous
- 4:17extremes to earn that nickname. A Dodger outfielder
- 4:20was once hit on the head by a fly ball, they
- 4:22tell us, and oh, the shame when three Dodger
- 4:25runners ended up on third base at the same time.
- 4:27Yes, fans still remember that famous Dodger who
- 4:30obliged the crowd by tipping his hat and a bird
- 4:33flew out of it. Who was that? Sure, Casey Stengel.
- 4:36But today there's a new theme and there's a new
- 4:38way to enjoy Dodger excitement. Fans are discovering
- 4:41that a good time is more thrilling with the chilling
- 4:43refreshment of Schlitz Malt Liquor. You just
- 4:46can't outscore the bolder, brawnier performance
- 4:48of the drink inspired by a bowl. Schlitz Malt
- 4:52Liquor. Age longer with more hops and more. So
- 4:56anytime the action picks up, be sure to pick
- 4:59up a can of Schlitz Malt Liquor. There isn't
- 5:02a better way to beat a thirst. And believe us,
- 5:06the word is out. Nobody makes malt liquor like
- 5:09Schlitz. Nobody. Bottom of the first. The Phillies
- 5:19out on order. The Dodgers with Wills, Moda, and
- 5:21Davis against right -hander Rick Wise. Wise,
- 5:2611 -10 with the lead. Rick is 0 -1 with the Dodgers.
- 5:32The Dodgers piled up a lot of runs to beat the
- 5:36Phillies that day. He himself... Allowed only
- 5:39one earned run, but the Dodgers won the game
- 5:4112 -4. So at first glance, you'd think they really
- 5:45ripped him, but an error hurt him badly. So Rick
- 5:48Wise, 5 -3 lifetime, ready to pitch to Maury
- 5:51Wills. First one is low and inside, ball one.
- 5:56We'll be playing scoreboard all day today, the
- 5:59Giants and the Mets in a doubleheader. Cincinnati,
- 6:04as usual, out in front and trying to hang on.
- 6:07Boy, that ball club is really wearing out the
- 6:08people at Crosley Field. Will fouls it away,
- 6:12one and one. The Reds invariably pile up a big
- 6:16lead. And just as invariably, the starting pitcher
- 6:21is gone. They go to the bullpen, and it's a question
- 6:23of, can they make it? Well, it's the same story
- 6:26today at Crosley Field. Here's the 1 -1 pitch
- 6:29to Maury Wills. Inside, ball two, two and one.
- 6:37There was a delay up at San Francisco, and we
- 6:41get the report now Ron Hunt, the second baseman
- 6:43for the Giants, was beamed. There's a 2 -1 pitch
- 6:46to Wills, a strike. Fortunately, Hunt had the
- 6:50batting helmet on. As a safety precaution, he
- 6:53was taken off the field on a stretcher, but the
- 6:55report is that he is conscious and talking. And
- 6:59so hopefully... Little Muggsy will be all right.
- 7:03Here's a 2 -2 pitch to Maury Wills. Foul back.
- 7:08In that Cincinnati game, the Reds got five runs
- 7:10in the second inning. Made it 7 -2 at the end
- 7:14of five. The Cardinals added two in the sixth
- 7:17and one in the seventh. So they're now in the
- 7:20bottom of the seventh inning and Cincinnati hanging
- 7:22on to what is now a 7 -5 lead. 2 -2 pitch on
- 7:29the way to Maury Wills. Swung on and missed by
- 7:31three. In talking about Cincinnati, what a tremendous
- 7:36attraction when you realize that Dodgers have
- 7:38double headers with the Reds here on the 16th
- 7:42and on the 23rd in Crosley Field. Double headers
- 7:46with the Reds. Should be a wild one. Manny Mota
- 7:54the batter. Motor hitting .342 as the Dodgers,
- 7:58.334 overall. Rick Wise into the windup, and
- 8:05the right -hander's first one a little high,
- 8:074 -1, 1 -0. Dodgers have won 7 of 11 from the
- 8:14Sills, 3 of the 5 played here. 1 -0 pitch to
- 8:20Motor, in there at the knees and on the edge
- 8:23for a strike in the count 1 -1. Now the 1 -1
- 8:34pitch on the way. Moda takes a half swing and
- 8:37hits it out in front of the plate. Down to get
- 8:39it is Wise, and he throws him out. So Moda thrown
- 8:42out by Rick Wise. Two down, and here he comes.
- 8:45The talk of the town, Willie Davis. Willie Davis.
- 9:00He's two games away from the all -time Dodger
- 9:03streak of 29 set by Zach Weed. His 27 -game hitting
- 9:08streak that he brings up to the plate right now
- 9:10ties him with Duke Snyder for the second longest
- 9:13streak in Dodger history. Duke had a 27 -game
- 9:18streak in 1963. I think it was 53. 1953. The
- 9:24pitch to Willie Davis over for a strike on one.
- 9:33Tomorrow, 1 o 'clock ballgame, the Dodgers and
- 9:35the New York Mets, and the Mets have become cover
- 9:37boys. They'll be on the cover of Time magazine.
- 9:40However, that story might be a little late, depending
- 9:44upon what happens today. The Cubs are winning.
- 9:47The Mets are playing a doubleheader with the
- 9:49Giants. The Mets started the day three and a
- 9:51half back of the Cubs, and I'm sure that Time
- 9:53got the idea when the Mets crawled it within
- 9:56two. Strike one pitch on the way. Willie skies
- 10:03away from the fastball up and in. One ball, one
- 10:06strike. There's a great quote in the paper, and
- 10:12it just shows you how confident a ball player
- 10:14can get after he's been around, and it is not
- 10:16misplaced confidence when you've been playing
- 10:18in the big leagues for eight years. Willie says
- 10:20he just feels he can hit .330. But one one pitch.
- 10:24Outside ball two, two and one. Well, he's hitting
- 10:26.317 right now. He also thinks, according to
- 10:32the quote in the paper, he might even be able
- 10:35to hit 400 before he's through. Needless to say,
- 10:40he's feeling chipper. 2 -1 pitch on the corner,
- 10:47strike two. 2 -2 to Willie. Wes Parker on deck.
- 10:51Two out in the first inning, no score. Rick Wise
- 11:09ready in the pitch to Davis. Ground ball to the
- 11:11hole. It's short. Up with it is Terry Harmon
- 11:13and throws him out by a stride. So the young
- 11:17shortstop nails Willie. He's gone. So are the
- 11:20Dodgers in order. And at the end of one, no score.
- 11:24Say, when you think of baseball, you just naturally
- 11:26think of hot dogs. They're go -togethers. But
- 11:28have you ever thought what it takes to make the
- 11:30perfect hot dog or wiener, as Farmer John calls
- 11:32them? Well, first of all, there's the quality
- 11:34of the meat. Farmer John wieners are not only
- 11:37all meat, but the best meat. U .S. inspected
- 11:40fresh eastern corn -fed pork and fresh, lean,
- 11:43juicy, homegrown beef. Then there's the matter
- 11:45of grinding the meat. Farmer John grinds it so
- 11:48finely his wieners are the smoothest you've ever
- 11:50tasted. Finally, of course, the flavor. Farmer
- 11:54John smokes his wieners just like he smokes his
- 11:57famous bacon over native western wood. That's
- 12:00why they have a wild and wonderful western flavor
- 12:02like no other. So if you're looking for the perfect
- 12:05wieners or perfect hot dogs, if you wish, look
- 12:08no further than Farmer John All Meat Wieners.
- 12:11Gold medal winners at the California State Fair.
- 12:13And if you don't see them in your store, ask
- 12:15for them. Why in the world settle for anything
- 12:17less than the perfect wieners? Farmer John. They're
- 12:27one inning, no score in the ballgame. The Dodgers
- 12:29and the Bills. While Bill Singer loosens up,
- 12:32we can duck in some scores for you. 6 -2, the
- 12:35Cubs leading Atlanta. Kenny Holtzman not only
- 12:37pitching, he hit a two -run home run. That's
- 12:40at the end of six. The Mets and the Giants scoreless
- 12:42at the end of three. Ron Hunt was beamed by Tom
- 12:45Seaver in that game and had to leave the game.
- 12:47Houston leading Pittsburgh 1 -0 at the end of
- 12:49four. Cincinnati 7 and the Cardinals 5 at the
- 12:53end of seven. The American League, Minnesota
- 12:564, Boston nothing at the end of seven. 2 -2 Cleveland
- 12:59-Chicago at the end of 5. Detroit 4, Seattle
- 13:022 at the end of 5. Washington beat Oakland 8
- 13:06-3. Frank Howard hit his 42nd home run, among
- 13:09other things, in the nation's capital. Hit, swung
- 13:12on, and missed by Johnny Callison. The end of
- 13:157, 5 -3, the Yankees leading Kansas City. Callison
- 13:20hitting 263, 14 home runs, 44 RBIs. He's a good
- 13:26one that the White Sox had get away. Strike one
- 13:29pitch to John is swung on and missed strike two.
- 13:35On deck, the quiet man from San Diego, Darren
- 13:38Johnson. Second inning, no score. Bright, sunshiny
- 13:47day at the ballpark, and Singer comes back 0
- 13:49-2 in the fastball away. Ball one, one and two.
- 13:55History was said last night at Dodger Stadium
- 13:58when the Dodger Mighty Mites played their fathers,
- 14:01and for the first time in history, in the Dodger
- 14:04dressing room, a diaper was changed. The pitch
- 14:07to Callison, foul back. One and two, the count
- 14:20of Johnny Callison. It was Ted Sizemore. who's
- 14:25a brand new happy for the second time, who changed
- 14:27the diaper in the dressing room. Johnny Callison
- 14:30is a high foul off to the left of the play. That'll
- 14:33carry out a play and go deep in the lower deck.
- 14:36And the count remains one and two. So Callison
- 14:47keeping everybody up, fouling them back, fouling
- 14:50them off to the left. One and two. Finger into
- 14:56the windup in the one -two pitch. It's a drive
- 14:58to right center field. Willie Davis and Willie
- 15:01Carver. And it is who? I'm not sure who. It's
- 15:05Davis. Willie Davis caught the ball. And Willie
- 15:08Carver twisted and went falling away. They almost
- 15:11collided on that one. So Callison flies to Davis.
- 15:18One away. And here is Darren Johnson. Darren
- 15:21with 16 home runs, 65 RBIs, 263 average. Second
- 15:30inning, no score. Bill Singer delivers, and the
- 15:34first one chases Johnson out of there, ball one.
- 15:38The New York Mets hit tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday
- 15:40and Wednesday night. Tomorrow, 1 p .m., Jim Bunning
- 15:44and Jerry Kuzman. The 1 -0 pitch, Johnson takes
- 15:47inside, ball two. Dodgers have a lot of work
- 15:50to do at the Mets. The Mets really have shaken
- 15:52them up. Sweeping all six games played at Shea
- 15:55Stadium in New York. Here's the 2 -0 pitch to
- 16:00Johnson. A high pop foul to the right of the
- 16:02plate. And coming after it is Haller, but it's
- 16:04questionable. And Tommy will not have a play.
- 16:07This is a dugout roof. Back into the stands.
- 16:09They have a good -natured scramble for that one.
- 16:132 -1. The Dodgers will take a look at the same
- 16:20three pitchers who gave them a bad time at New
- 16:23York, Kuzmin, Gentry, Cardwell. The last time
- 16:27they faced the Mets, they were relieved that
- 16:30they were not going to see Seaver, and they still
- 16:31lost. Johnson hits a line drive, face it to center
- 16:35field. Willie Davis up to get it. Sedan, a solid
- 16:38single with one out, and the batter will be Ron
- 16:41Stone. Ron Stone is from Corning, California,
- 16:54makes his home in Stockton. 6 '2", 195 pounders,
- 16:5927 years old. Stone, as he comes to the plate
- 17:05today, hitting .242. Throw to first place, Johnson
- 17:14back to the bag. Stone left -hand batter. So
- 17:19manager George Meyer trying to get some left
- 17:21-handed sticks in the lineup. Singer another
- 17:28throw to first base, and again Johnson back.
- 17:30Dern is not a base -stealing threat. What the
- 17:32Dodgers are worrying about is the hit -and -run
- 17:34play. The pitch to Stone taken for sight. That's
- 17:39an open invitation to have a left -hand hitter
- 17:41up and the runner at first, with the first baseman
- 17:43holding the runner on. That's a pretty good gap.
- 17:46Wills and Sizemore are trying to... Figure out
- 17:49who's going to cover. 0 -1 to Darren Johnson.
- 17:54The pitch is outside. He ran up as if to bunt.
- 17:57One ball, one strike. Cubs added a run. They
- 18:00now lead 7 -2 over Atlanta at the end of the
- 18:026 .5. Will's talking to Singer. Perhaps wants
- 18:07Bill to make sure to know who's covering in the
- 18:11event of a hit -and -run play. 1 -1 to Ron Stone.
- 18:19Another throw to first, not in time. The Dodgers
- 18:21play Stone to go the other way. Willie Davis
- 18:25shading in the left center. Motor deep and near
- 18:27the line and left. 1 -1 pitch. Stone hits the
- 18:30ground ball to Wills. He feeds to Sizemore. He
- 18:33goes to Parker. So the double play, 6 -4 -3.
- 18:41No runs, one hit, nobody left. And at the end
- 18:44of an inning and a half, no score. Chris Town
- 18:47TV and the Chris Town Shopping Center, 19th Avenue
- 18:49and West Bethany Home Road presents From Magnavox,
- 18:52a new color television set that will be as important

- 19:34Color TV. Now with total automatic color at Crishtown
- 19:38TV in the Crishtown Shopping Center, 19th Avenue
- 19:41and West Bethany Home Road. Crishtown TV and
- 19:43Magnavox, a colorful competition. Bottom of the
- 19:49second inning, no score in the ballgame. Wes
- 19:52Parker, Willie Crawford, and Bill Sudeikis coming
- 19:55up in that order against right -hander Rick Wise.
- 20:01On the message board, happy birthday to John
- 20:03Van Osdale, celebrating his 80th birthday. But
- 20:06I just want to celebrate today. So Parker will
- 20:09start it off. No score. Up at Candlestick Park,
- 20:14scoreless in the fourth inning, but Mike McCormick
- 20:17has been relieved by Ron Herbal. So apparently
- 20:20the Mets are up to something. So here's Parker.
- 20:28West has a modest six -game hitting streak. But
- 20:32it's better to project and show that he has hit
- 20:34safely in 19 of his last 24 games. Wise delivers.
- 20:40Fastball for a strike at the knees. On one. When
- 20:48Parker came back from the hospital, he really
- 20:49came roaring back. He's played in 14 games. He
- 20:54has 10 RBIs over that span. Strike one pitch
- 20:57to West. Ground ball to the left is short. Tricky
- 20:59hop, but Harmon stays with it and throws him
- 21:01out. So Parker rolls to short, one away, and
- 21:04Willie Crawford the batter. All we get is an
- 21:08old pro in the pork business. Farmer John knows
- 21:09that what counts most in pork products is freshness.
- 21:12The fresher, the better. That's why Farmer John
- 21:14brings you pork products that are as fresh as
- 21:16you can buy. Willie Crawford, who had to act
- 21:21more like an Indian rubber man in right field
- 21:23on the drive by Johnny Callison to avoid a collision
- 21:26with Willie Davis. Now coming up. Requires delivers,
- 21:33and Crawford takes the strike. Going on. Willie
- 21:37hitting .260. The next one to Crawford makes
- 21:49him pull away. One and one. Time called now.
- 21:58There is some fool. In fact, it's more than a
- 22:01fool. Somebody is throwing things down on the
- 22:07field and time is called. You know, you can't
- 22:14believe people in this world. There's just no
- 22:16way to believe people. How could anybody in his
- 22:20right mind come to a ballpark with thousands
- 22:23of ladies and children and people out to enjoy
- 22:25themselves and do something like that? And they
- 22:31are bottles that were thrown out on the field,
- 22:33glass bottles. Unbelievable. Friends, if you
- 22:38see anybody sitting next to you, and someone
- 22:40must have been next to the guy who did it. Just
- 22:42quietly excuse yourself and go over and pinpoint
- 22:45him, won't you, for the safety of all of us?
- 22:49Please? Thank you. So, time is called. That's
- 22:55outrageous. You know, in this day and age, we
- 23:03are getting so, we hear so much about people
- 23:06flaunting rules, flaunting authority. And I will
- 23:09say one thing. This is one of the better police
- 23:12parks in the league. And we're happy to say that
- 23:15whenever a kid runs out on the field, we notice
- 23:18the reaction here is less favorable to a youngster
- 23:22breaking the rules than it is in most any other
- 23:24park. And that's where it starts. I don't know
- 23:27how many times we've seen a kid run on the field,
- 23:29then a policeman go after him. And again, the
- 23:35announcement being made that if you have spotted
- 23:38the guy, the girl, the character, the mindless
- 23:42soul who did it, to please report him for the
- 23:46safety of everybody in the ballpark. Because
- 23:49whoever did that is not well, not well at all.
- 23:53Time called while they are cleaning up the broken
- 23:57bottles. So Jim Gilliam helping with a broom,
- 24:04helping the kids pick it up. But boy, it's shocking,
- 24:07isn't it? Well, it's like you try to explain
- 24:12to your children there are people in this world
- 24:15who are like that. And the best we can do is
- 24:19try and find them and put them someplace for
- 24:23their own benefit as well as all the society.
- 24:26Well, we're just about ready. But that's about
- 24:29as... I've seen it happen before, but not to
- 24:34the extent of that where a sack came out on the
- 24:36field. Okay. Boy, oh boy. Willie Crawford at
- 24:41the plate, one out in the second inning, no score.
- 24:43And Rick Wise into the windup and delivers, and
- 24:46it's swung on and fouled tip. One and two. Rick
- 24:57Wise checking. Outfield playing Crawford straight
- 25:00away. One out, second inning, no score. Right
- 25:03-handers fastball is down and away. Ball two.
- 25:05Two and two. Dodgers and Phillies concluding
- 25:12their season's work. The Mets will be here tomorrow.
- 25:16Now the 2 -2 pitch on the way, fouled back by
- 25:19Crawford, so he's still there, two balls, two
- 25:21strikes. Willie is slowly maturing to become
- 25:24a good Major League ball player, and he can only
- 25:27get better. He is just starting to learn his
- 25:30trade. A 260 average shows that he has learned
- 25:33quite a few lessons. Willie waiting. Wise checking.
- 25:38Now Rick into the windup. 2 -2 pitch on the way.
- 25:42Outside ball three. On deck, marking his return
- 25:49to the lineup today, Bill Sudeikis. Wise reading
- 26:00Watkins. Now the right -hander's 3 -2 pitch on
- 26:02the way. Crawford, it's a drive to right field.
- 26:04Callison goes back, and this ball is gone. Crawford.
- 26:33It's a low line drive that was just taken off
- 26:36as it went into the right field bleachers and
- 26:38the Dodgers lead one to nothing. And for Crawford,
- 26:41his ninth home run and his 37th RBI. One of the
- 26:44most dramatic improvements with Willie Crawford,
- 26:47he doesn't strike out as he used to. Here's Sudeikis.
- 26:50He takes high ball one. Up until about three
- 26:55weeks ago, Willie Crawford had a very bad strikeout
- 26:58ratio, but no longer. He's done a fine job. Sudeikis
- 27:02takes a breaking ball for a strike in a count
- 27:04one and one, and Davey Watkins wants to talk
- 27:06to his pitcher, so let's pause for the station
- 27:08identification. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 27:10radio network. You can charge your purchases
- 27:12and take many months to pay at Paul Johnson Distributing
- 27:15Company, 7144 North 23rd Avenue, Phoenix, where
- 27:18you can use your Arizona Bank Bank AmeriCard.
- 27:20This is KTAR in Phoenix. Bill Sudeikis at the
- 27:26plate. Now the 1 -1 pitch on the way. Fastball
- 27:30outside. Ball two. 2 -1. 1 -0 Dodgers. Second
- 27:42inning. Crawford is just homered. Rick Wise into
- 27:46the windup. Sudeikis hits one on the ground to
- 27:49the shortstop Harmon who stays with him. Terry
- 27:52flicks across to Allen for the out. Two down.
- 27:55That'll bring up Tommy Haller. Tom Haller batting
- 28:04.266. Five home runs, 35 runs batted in. Rick
- 28:17Wise has allowed his 15th home run on that ball
- 28:21that Crawford hit out. The Dodgers, as a team,
- 28:27have hit 83 home runs now. Here's a pitch to
- 28:30Tom Haller, taken for a strike. On one. No further
- 28:38report out of Candlestick. We told you that Ron
- 28:40Herbel relieved Mike McCormick. The scoreless
- 28:43through three. The strike one pitch. In there.
- 28:48Strike two. 0 -2. For Cincinnati, again, the
- 28:53same story. They led 7 -2, 7 -4, 7 -5. Merritt,
- 28:58the starter, relieved by Carroll. Now Granger
- 29:01has to relieve Carroll in the eighth. Strike
- 29:04two -fifths to Haller. A high pop fly, back of
- 29:07third and down the line. A trio of fills in pursuit,
- 29:10and it's the middleman, Terry Harmon, the shortstop,
- 29:13who makes the catch. So the Dodgers get a run
- 29:16on ahead, a home run by Willie Crawford, and
- 29:18at the end of two, Dodgers 1, Phillies nothing.
- 29:21Hey, Hobie Alter, who do you look up to when
- 29:23everyone around you is being wiped out by some
- 29:25wild surf at Waimea Bay? I look up to the Holly
- 29:28Eva life -saving team. But usually all I see
- 29:30when I look up is another 25 -foot wave. Hey,
- 29:33Hobie Alter, who do you look up to when your
- 29:35car isn't taking the big hills like it should?
- 29:37I look up to 76. Those guys can really spot the
- 29:40trouble fast. They really know cars. They're
- 29:42trained that way. Look up to 76 to pinpoint your
- 30:00car's problems. And look up to 76 to keep it
- 30:03from happening again. With the finest in auto
- 30:05care products, like our Union Super Motor Oil.
- 30:08The oil designed for today's super cars. Through
- 30:22two innings here at Dodger Stadium, the Dodgers
- 30:24one run, one hit. A home run by Willie Crawford.
- 30:27The Phillies no runs, one hit. Bill Singer and
- 30:30Rick Wise. Nothing new on the scoreboard, so
- 30:32we'll just wait until we get further reports.
- 30:34Let's go to the third. And for more play -by
- 30:36-play, here's Gary Dodgers. All right, Billy,
- 30:37and it'll be Dave Watkins, the catcher, followed
- 30:39by Rojas and Wise. Bill Singer with a run to
- 30:42work on now as we get set to play. Watkins batting
- 30:46184, has three home runs and eight runs batted
- 30:49in. The Phillies move on to San Diego after this
- 30:53game. They're trying to snap a losing streak,
- 30:57which began in San Francisco. All right, Watkins
- 31:05now waits as Singer delivers. Bunt try, missed,
- 31:08strike one. Sudeikis at third, Wills at short,
- 31:11Sizemore at second, Parker at first. Crawford
- 31:14in right, Davis in center, Mota in left for the
- 31:16Dodgers. Haller catching, Bill Singer trying
- 31:18to get his sixth. 17th win. He's won 16 and lost
- 31:218. Now the 0 -1 pitch. Watkins takes a curved
- 31:24strike. He ducked under the pitch and it was
- 31:26in there for a strike and he couldn't believe
- 31:28it. So Dave Watkins was ducking under a breaking
- 31:31ball and it caught the inside corner. 0 -2 the
- 31:36count. Now the windup and the pitch on the way.
- 31:40Fastball just outside. One ball and two strikes.
- 31:44Several players trying for 19 today. is 18. Necro
- 31:50was tying for 19. He will not get it. He had
- 31:53to go out, and the Cubs are winning that game
- 31:55from Atlanta. A swing and a miss, and down goes
- 31:57Watson. Strikeout number two for Bill Singer.
- 32:04The Necro, 18 and 11, has been knocked out. Seaver
- 32:07apparently enjoying some runs by the Mets. At
- 32:09least the Giants have made a pitching change.
- 32:14And the Mets came up with five. Oh, that gives
- 32:18Seaver a little cushion, trying for his 19th.
- 32:22Here today, Bill Singer trying for his 17th.
- 32:28Claude Osteen got his 18th last night. That's
- 32:32the first game of a doubleheader at San Francisco,
- 32:33by the way. The pitch to Rojas' strike. Here's
- 32:36the windup and the pitch down. Swing and a fly
- 32:38ball to left center field. Willie Davis moving
- 32:39over. He's there and makes the catch for the
- 32:42out. For Rojas, guys to Davis in left center
- 32:45field. Two up and two down, and here's Wise coming
- 32:48on. Rick Wise. The pitcher has 16 hits, one home
- 32:56run. Not a bad hitting pitcher, 16 for 55. So
- 33:07Rick Wise comes on now. The Cubs have added another
- 33:11run and lead Atlanta now 8 -2 playing in the
- 33:14bottom of the eighth inning at Atlanta. Pitch
- 33:17comes high for Ball. One ball and no strike.
- 33:29Now the 1 -0 pitch. Curve is a strike 1 -1. 1
- 33:41-1 pitch. Swung on and foul tipped out of Haller's
- 33:44mask. And it is 1 -2. Tom takes the mask off.
- 33:50Walks back toward Singer, gets a new ball. One
- 33:53ball, two strikes. A ball and two strikes to
- 34:13Rick Wise with two outs, third inning. The Dodgers
- 34:17lead 1 -0 on Willie Crawford's home run. Pitch
- 34:22is swung on and missed strike three, and down
- 34:24goes Wise to retire the side. Three strikeouts
- 34:27for Singer, and the Phillies out on order, and
- 34:29the score at the end of two and a half innings
- 34:30of play. Dodgers 1, Philadelphia nothing. But
- 34:36everybody in Bakersfield, Berkey wholesaler Ellery
- 34:39Mulock, asked us to say hello for him. Ellery
- 34:41hopes to enjoy every game during the 1969 season,
- 34:44along with Berkey, the comfortable bear. On the
- 34:53message board, they have the score, New York
- 34:555, Giants nothing for three and a half innings.
- 34:58And underneath it says, Mets, we love you. Tomorrow,
- 35:01grr. That's pretty good. The Mets are here tomorrow,
- 35:05of course, to open up a three -game series with
- 35:07Kuzma, Gentry, and Cardwell due to pitch for
- 35:09the Mets against Bunning, Sutton, and Osteen.
- 35:12Teddy Sizemore coming to bat now here in the
- 35:16bottom of third, and Ted has been one of the
- 35:17Dodger hot hitters of late. His average up to
- 35:20.270 as he steps into the batter's box. He's
- 35:24gone 6 for 10, and during the past 18 games back
- 35:27to August the 10th, he's had 27 hits for a .403
- 35:30average. And he's at safe in 16 of the 18 games
- 35:33during that streak. Picks one and fouled away.
- 35:36Strike one, 0 -1. Another note on Sizemore, he's
- 35:39never hit less than .296 in professional ball.
- 35:43And he's played on three teams, and they've all
- 35:45won pennants. So in addition to being a good
- 35:48player, he might be a good luck charm. So Sizemore
- 35:51waiting. Strike one count. Wise into the windup
- 35:56and the pitch on the way to Teddy. Slider for
- 35:57strike, and it's 0 -2. Sizemore hit .330 his
- 36:03first year at Tri -City, .295 at Albuquerque,
- 36:05which was a glow, and .314 for Spokane last year.
- 36:09And he's moving up now, up to .270, the pitch
- 36:12on the way. Too high with a breaking pitch, one
- 36:15and two. One ball, two strikes. It's Ted Sizemore,
- 36:20the Dodgers' Rookie of the Year candidate. Sudeikis,
- 36:26of course, would be classified as the rookie
- 36:27of the year also, but Bill has not played as
- 36:29much as Sizemore. The 1 -2 pitch. Taken low.
- 36:33Watkins started to throw it around. Pitched a
- 36:36little low inside. Ball two into the 2 -2 count.
- 36:39Another reminder, tomorrow's game, a day game.
- 36:42Labor Day, 1 o 'clock. Bunning and Koosman. Tuesday
- 36:45and Wednesday, night game with the Mets. Now
- 36:48Wise ready, the 2 -2 pitch. And he plays a line
- 36:50drive, base hit to left center field. That one
- 36:52might get through. He's around first pitch for
- 36:55second. Cut off by Stone. The floor to second
- 36:57base. He's safe. The blazing bat of Teddy Sizemore
- 37:05continues to sizzle as he lines one to left center
- 37:08field. Stone got over to cut it off on the grass,
- 37:11and by that time, Sizemore was in the second
- 37:13base. A two -base hit for Ted. So he's been really
- 37:19going. Here's Finger at bat now. We'll try to
- 37:21move him along. Allen moves up a step or two
- 37:23at first base in case the bunt is on. Johnson
- 37:25plays in at third. Sizemore on second. Singer
- 37:29waiting. And wise pitches. It's bunt, missed,
- 37:32and strike one. Popped out of the glove of Watkins,
- 37:35but no advance. So Singer trying to bunt, missed
- 37:38it completely. 0 -1. So for Sizemore, 17 of 19.
- 37:46It all began when Teddy went, I think, 0 for
- 37:4920. And they had a little session with... batting
- 37:52instructor Dixie Walker. That got him straightened
- 37:54away. Strike one count. Singer waiting. Sizemore
- 38:00off second. Here comes Rojas charging the plate
- 38:03and the pitch is too low. That's a new one. Instead
- 38:06of Allen coming in, Rojas, the second baseman,
- 38:08was coming in. So that's a new wrinkle on the
- 38:11bunt defense. Allen stayed at first. Rojas, the
- 38:14second, charged the plate. The other infielders...
- 38:17Johnson stayed near the bag, and the shortstop
- 38:20Harmon moved towards second. Now Allen moves
- 38:24up a step or two on the grass, and looks as if
- 38:26they have the same maneuver. Here's the pitch
- 38:29to Singer, and he swings away, hits it by Allen,
- 38:30and up with it will be Rojas, who runs to the
- 38:32bag, and on the play, five more goes to third.
- 38:37So Singer had a full swing, and Allen that time
- 38:39was charging the plate, with Rojas laying back,
- 38:42and it's a good thing. Had they both been charging,
- 38:45that would have been through them. But as it
- 38:47was, Rojas picked the ball up on the grass and
- 38:49carried it to the bag in time for the out. It
- 38:52was not a sacrifice, a full swing for Singer,
- 38:54but he got his man over. So he grounds it by
- 38:57Allen, retrieved by Rojas, and made the put out
- 39:00on assistance. Dives more to third on the ground
- 39:02out. And here's Maury Wills, who struck out his
- 39:05first time up. And now the Phillies bring the
- 39:06infield up. Wills trying to get the RBI. He's
- 39:13driven in 38th of the year. Wise with the pitch.
- 39:16Morey hits a foul over the backstop. Strike one.
- 39:23On one. Five more. Good speed at third. Wills
- 39:31on at first. Rick Wise catching signs. Here's
- 39:35the look now. And the pitch on the way to Morey.
- 39:39Taken high for the ball. One and one. Johnson
- 39:41edging in at third just in case the bunch would
- 39:43be on. Allen playing up at first base. 1 -1.
- 39:55Morey waiting in the pitch. Taking high after
- 39:57the ball, and it is 2 -1. 2 -1. Wyatt's working
- 40:11again. Ties Moore shortly away from third. Johnson
- 40:14tried to hold him on. And now a wide set again.
- 40:17The 1 -1 pitch. Moore, he takes high. Ball three.
- 40:193 -1. Three balls and a strike to Wills. We're
- 40:25in the third inning. Cardinals fail to score
- 40:31in the eighth inning, and the Reds lead them
- 40:32by a score of 7 -5. 3 -1 pitch now to Wills.
- 40:38On the way. Boy, it's a line drive pace at the
- 40:40right center field. The run is in. 2 -0 Dodgers.
- 40:49So, Maury lines a single over the drawn -in infield.
- 40:55Strasburg scores, and Moda now will be the batter.
- 40:582 -0 Dodgers. Moda grounded out to the pitcher
- 41:03his first time up. Will's on it first, and we'll
- 41:10see if Morey tries to steal in this spot. He
- 41:14has stolen 35. 19 is a Dodger. All right, Morey
- 41:21on first to throw over there, and he's back easily.
- 41:23The throw was high. Wise has turned quickly to
- 41:26throw it. Morey again sneaks off. About a two,
- 41:31three -step lead. They pick out, and he's not
- 41:34going. So Watkins... Call for the pitch out.
- 41:39Maury holding up. One in, one on, one out. Dodgers
- 41:46lead 2 -0. We're in the third inning. Sizemore
- 41:49doubles. Tore it on the base hit by Wills after
- 41:51he went to third on the ground out. Here's a
- 41:53play to first again and Maury back easily. That
- 41:55was just a lob throw by Wise that time. Mets
- 42:01lead the Giants 5 -0 in the fourth inning. There
- 42:04he goes. Here's the throw by Watkins. And it
- 42:06is. It is in time. Morey is out. I think Watkins
- 42:10wanted the pitch out, but the pitch was in the
- 42:13strike zone for a strike, and he still made the
- 42:15throw in time to get Morey. Shortstop handled
- 42:20the throw. So Morey, who had stolen eight bases
- 42:24in his last six games, had a string going of
- 42:28nine consecutive preps, and that's snapped by
- 42:30Watkins here. The 1 -1 picks the motor. Foul.
- 42:33Out of play down the right field line. Tamori,
- 42:36who was running well, is thrown out by the Philadelphia
- 42:39catcher. One and two to Manny Mota. Two outs.
- 42:50Rick Wise checking signs. Mota waiting. On deck,
- 42:54Willie Davis. Now Rick's cut again into the windup
- 42:59and the pitch on the way to Mota. Line drive
- 43:01along the right field line is going to be just
- 43:04fouled by about three or four feet. Bounces into
- 43:06the lower stand. The motor shot to right field,
- 43:09but he fouled it away. The Phillies play him
- 43:11over that way. Callison was not too far off the
- 43:13line. One ball, two strikes. Motor goes back
- 43:17to try it again. Manning hitting .334 with three
- 43:19home runs, 25 runs batted in. Motor up, waiting.
- 43:31and wise with the wind up in the pit pulling
- 43:32a ground ball to shortstop harman big hop crow
- 43:35is in time and the side is retired the motor
- 43:38grounds out but the dodgers pick up a run on
- 43:40two hits and none left on the score through three
- 43:42innings dodgers two and the phillies nothing
- 43:46Well, Clay, you baseball fans with young children
- 43:48know how important it is for youngsters to eat
- 43:50a hearty breakfast. Farmer John would like to
- 43:51suggest his lean, luscious Farmer John sausage.
- 43:54Farmer John makes his sausage with all the best
- 43:56meat, not just the simmings, and he makes it
- 43:58to an old -time Western recipe with only natural
- 44:01herbs and spices. So there's a wonderful Western
- 44:03flavor in every marvelous meaty morsel. And Farmer
- 44:06John's sausage is as fresh as you can buy. It's
- 44:09made from fresh Eastern corn -fed pork, brought
- 44:11out here live, then U .S. inspected and dressed
- 44:13fresh right here in the West. Well, that's why
- 44:15Farmer John's Sausage always has a rosy, fresh
- 44:18complexion. It never looks gray like sausage
- 44:21shipped in frozen or cold storage. So be sure
- 44:25to pick up a package of Farmer John's Fresh Country
- 44:27Sausage next time you shop. It's the sausage
- 44:30that won the gold medal at the California State
- 44:32Fair. And you'll agree, it's the easternmost
- 44:35in quality and the westernmost in flavor. That's
- 44:39Farmer John's Luscious Farmer John's Sausage.
- 44:44For three innings, it is 2 -0 Dodgers on three
- 44:47hits. Phillies no runs in one hit. Bill Singer
- 44:49now warming up with Tom Haller, all set to go.
- 44:52Into the fourth, Phillies coming up back to play
- 44:54in their fifth. So far, the Dodgers doing it
- 44:56with dispatch, a home run by Willie Crawford,
- 44:58and a double followed by a clutch single. The
- 45:01Phillies trying to get some back. We'll have
- 45:03Terry Harmon in the shortstop, followed by Johnny
- 45:05Briggs, and then Richie Allen. Bill Singer has
- 45:08allowed one hit through three innings, a line
- 45:11single to center by Darren Johnson. who was then
- 45:13doubled up as Ron Stone hit into a double play.
- 45:16Bill has six at the minimum, nine batters in
- 45:19three innings. Breaking ball over first strike
- 45:21to Harmon, 0 -1. Harmon playing for Don Money.
- 45:27Carry 25. He's from Toledo. Strike one pitch
- 45:33is hit down the right field line. Crawford racing
- 45:35across the line in foul ground. It drops untouched
- 45:38and bounces into the sand. Willie picks it up
- 45:42and flips it back in after it had come out and
- 45:45receives this water to the town. 0 -2 to town.
- 46:02Final. And Bob Gibson lost his tenth. Jimmy Merritt
- 46:06won his sixteenth. Harmon fouls a pitch away
- 46:10upstairs, and a young girl in a print dress held
- 46:14onto that one. Now, Scalzo, she juggled a little
- 46:19bit, but it was a very difficult chance. Harmon
- 46:25hits one over the mound, slanting in front of
- 46:27the bag as well to throw him out. So Harmon grounds
- 46:33to short. The batter, Johnny Briggs. Johnny Briggs,
- 46:46left -hand hitting center fielder, popped up
- 46:47to third baseman Bill Sudeikis in the first inning.
- 46:53Briggs takes outside, ball one, 1 -0. 2 -0 Dodgers,
- 47:02fourth inning. Singer comes back, breaking ball
- 47:05away, ball two. On deck, Richie Allen. The next
- 47:18one is driven to right center field. The Corbett
- 47:20going back and up and makes the catch to the
- 47:22out. Got a good jump on that line drive. So Briggs
- 47:28lines to Crawford and here's Richie Allen. The
- 47:36last time Richie Allen hit the ball was his last
- 47:40at -bat Friday night. And when he hit it, he
- 47:43hit it. He hit it into the bleachers in right
- 47:46field. But last night, he struck out four times,
- 47:49and Singer struck him out in the first inning
- 47:51today. Bill DeLeris, fastball for a strike. He
- 47:56got him on breaking ball the first time, and
- 48:01he shoots one over for a strike. Now the strike
- 48:05one pitch, breaking ball fouled away, and so
- 48:07Richie's in a hole, 0 -2. Allen is a remarkable
- 48:14player. in the sense that he has struck out 111
- 48:18times and is still hitting 311. You realize the
- 48:23percentages when he does make contact. Fastball,
- 48:26got him, strike three, called. He has struck
- 48:28out six consecutive times. They're gone in the
- 48:32fourth, and at the end of three and a half innings,
- 48:34the Dodgers two and the Phillies nothing. Kemper

- 49:42inning, the Dodgers leading the Phillies 2 -0.
- 49:44And I'm sure that your mind works somewhat like
- 49:47ours. You start talking about Richie Allen and
- 49:50the fact that he has struck out consecutively
- 49:53now in his last six at -bats. Willie Davis coming
- 49:57up, so let's wait until Willie has had his at
- 49:59-bats with that 27 -game hitting figure. And
- 50:01then we'll talk about the record for most consecutive
- 50:05strikeouts. That's not as a pitcher as a hitter.
- 50:09Willie waiting. He was thrown out by Terry Harmon,
- 50:12the shortstop. Right -hander Wise delivers a
- 50:19drive down the left field line, slicing foul,
- 50:22and it goes into the seat, out of play. 0 -1.
- 50:260 -1 to Willie. the strike one pitch on the way.
- 50:47Wise delivers. High and inside. One and one.
- 50:53Dodgers leading two to nothing in the fourth
- 50:55inning. Atlanta must be doing something in the
- 50:58bottom of the eighth inning. How much we don't
- 51:00know. Holtzman was relieved by Abernathy. Abernathy
- 51:04was relieved by Aguirre. The one -one pitch away.
- 51:08Ball two. In that game, it would appear the Cubs
- 51:12have a commanding lead of eight to two. Though
- 51:15it remains to be seen what they've done in the
- 51:17bottom of the eighth, that they've changed pitches
- 51:19twice. Here's a 2 -1 pitch to Willie Davis. Fastball
- 51:25hit right through the middle, hits the bag, and
- 51:28it's a base hit to center. Willie is hit safely
- 51:32in 28 straight. Willie Davis hits his shot up
- 51:47the middle. He is now second on the all -time
- 51:50Dodger list of the longest hitting streak. Zach
- 51:52Wheat has hit in 29. And Willie will challenge
- 51:55the master tomorrow. Willie Davis, 28th straight.
- 52:02Here's Wes Parker. Why is it the barrel has a
- 52:06look at Davis? He goes, didn't get a good jump.
- 52:08The throw down. He's in there. Comes off the
- 52:11bag and they get him. He was safe and then called
- 52:18out. As Terry Harmon tried to get him and couldn't,
- 52:23but as he eluded Harmon's tag, he apparently
- 52:26came off the bag, and then Harmon got him a second
- 52:29time. Willie stumbled in getting his break at
- 52:32first base. He did not get a jump at all. So
- 52:35he's out 2 -6. And receives the applaud of the
- 52:40crowd as he goes walking off the field. Well,
- 52:45we can tell you a little bit more about that
- 52:47consecutive strikeout by a batter. First of all,
- 52:50the hits to it, naturally. Who would be the worst
- 52:53hitter? Who would be the guy who would strike
- 52:54out consecutively the most times? The answer
- 52:57would have to be a pitcher. The pitch to Parker
- 53:06Loeb, all two. Most consecutive at -bats striking
- 53:10out. Bill Hands of the Cubs did it last year.
- 53:14He struck out 14 times in a row. Here's the 2
- 53:19-0 pitch. Bow back. In the American League, pitcher
- 53:22George Brunette of the Angels in 67 struck out
- 53:268 times in a row. But to a pitcher, that wouldn't
- 53:30be news. What would be the disturbing record,
- 53:33and he is in the books, would be a non -pitcher
- 53:35striking out consecutive at -bats. Here's the
- 53:392 -1 pitch on the way. taken for a strike. That
- 53:42would be held by Adolfo Phillips, formerly of
- 53:46the Cubs, now with Montreal. Adolfo Phillips,
- 53:50three years ago, struck out nine straight times,
- 53:53and he's a center fielder. Here's the 2 -2 pitch
- 53:59on the way. Parker takes strike three calls.
- 54:02As far as the station identification, this is
- 54:05the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network. You can
- 54:07charge your purchase of red -pink metal and superior
- 54:09at the Fox Pounder Incorporated, 2308 North 15th
- 54:12Avenue, Phoenix, where you can use your Arizona
- 54:13Bank Bank America card. This is KTAR in Phoenix,
- 54:17Arizona. Willie Crawford is at the plate. Homer
- 54:27in the second inning. He's one for one. Wise
- 54:29delivers and it's swung on and missed him. Boy,
- 54:31he had a rip at that. 0 -1. One other thing,
- 54:35and we'll close the book on strikeouts. The most
- 54:37strikeouts in a nine -inning game five times
- 54:40by many players. In fact, so many they don't
- 54:44bother to listen. Here's the strike one pitch
- 54:47to Willie Crawford. Outside, 1 -1. By the way,
- 54:51with all the fuss and feathers down there in
- 54:52Atlanta, the Braves came up with two. So it is
- 54:568 -4. Favor of Chicago at the end of 8, and it's
- 54:59raining in Georgia. Here's the 1 -1 pitch on
- 55:07the way to Willie Crawford. Poked down to shortstop.
- 55:10Harmon gloves it, straightens up, flips across
- 55:12to Allen in time. Didn't get much on his throw.
- 55:16Made it a close play. No runs ahead. Nobody left
- 55:18at the end of 4. Dodgers 2, Phillies nothing.
- 55:22Hey, Johnny Weismiller. Who did you look up to
- 55:24in all those Tarzan epics? I usually looked up
- 55:27to the monkeys. They were always a few lines
- 55:28ahead of me. And I looked up to my elocution
- 55:31teacher. He taught me how to say... Hey, Johnny
- 55:37Weismuller, who do you look up to when your car
- 55:39starts getting ahead of you? That's when I look
- 55:41up to 76. Those guys are real swingers when it
- 55:44comes to keeping my car on a beaten path. Union
- 56:0276 dealers know about cars. They live with them
- 56:05all day. Plus, they've got the best gasolines
- 56:07around and 76 revolving credits to help you pay
- 56:11the bill. Drop in. Don't get caught out on the
- 56:13limp. Through four innings at Dodgers, leading
- 56:36Philadelphia 2 -0, and so he would not be forgotten,
- 56:39the crowd here at the ballpark applauding Jim
- 56:41Brewer, who is back at Centinella Hospital. We
- 56:45all wish him well and hope he'll join the ball
- 56:47club shortly. Johnny Callison, the batter. Johnny
- 57:00Callison, fly to center in the second inning.
- 57:02Bill Singer delivers. Breaking ball. Over for
- 57:05a strike. 0 -1. Singer straightens up into the
- 57:17windup. He struck out four. His next ball high
- 57:20and away. 1 -1. His pitch is just three men per
- 57:25inning, so he's faced only 12. He's allowed just
- 57:30one hit. Single by Darren Johnson. Callison takes
- 57:33good breaking ball. Strike two. One and two.
- 57:39New York really chewing up the Giants. Well,
- 57:42it figures. They have given the California team
- 57:44such a bad time this year. They're leading the
- 57:47Giants eight to nothing now. The end of four
- 57:49and a half. There's a one -hopper backhanded
- 57:52by the Golden Glove. Oh, what a play. Parker
- 57:55just calmly walks over and steps on the bag.
- 58:01Boy, the Dodgers are so fortunate over the years.
- 58:04They had as fine a fielding first baseman as
- 58:08you could imagine in Gil Hodges. And they come
- 58:11right back with a Ron Fairley and come right
- 58:13back with a Wes Parker. So Parker, the Golden
- 58:17Glove, just sucked that one up easily. Darren
- 58:21Johnson fouls it away, 0 -1. Final score, Minnesota
- 58:27beat Boston 6 -2, and Jim Perry picked up his
- 58:3117th. He beat Vicente Romo. Johnson fouls another
- 58:34one away, 0 -2. 0 -2 the count to Darren Johnson.
- 58:47Now the strike two pitch on the way, pass ball
- 58:49low, ball one, 1 -2. Hands on his knees, checking
- 59:04signs. Now the one -two pitch, breaking ball.
- 59:07Got him swinging, and boy, he's throwing hard
- 59:09-breaking stuff. Well, the Dodgers -Phillies
- 59:12game broadcast coming to you from Los Angeles.
- 59:14If you're planning a shopping trip, here's a
- 59:16shopping hint. Save time, save steps. Look in
- 59:19the yellow pages first. You'll find it's a handy
- 59:21buying guide. Five strikeouts, two down in the
- 59:29fifth inning, and Rhyme stoned the batter. Stone
- 59:33left -hand hitting outfielder, hit into a double
- 59:35play, going the other way to shortstop. He takes
- 59:38the strike. Singer throwing hard, particularly
- 59:41a hard curve. Owen won the count. Singer back
- 59:48overhand and bounced it in the dirt. One ball
- 59:51and one strike. Houston getting magnificent pitching
- 59:58and not much hitting in the last week. Houston
- 1:00:02might very well have been right up there at the
- 1:00:04top if they had hit at all. But they have not.
- 1:00:07And today they're tied up 2 -2 in the bottom
- 1:00:10of the seventh. Stone takes outside. Ball two,
- 1:00:13two and one. Denny LeMaster and Luke Walker in
- 1:00:16that game at Pittsburgh. With Pittsburgh. The
- 1:00:21Cincinnati's home in the barn. They've beaten
- 1:00:23the Cardinals 7 -5. Now they sit back and wait.
- 1:00:262 -1 pitch. Ground ball to the hole. Right side.
- 1:00:29Through into right field for the Baysheds. So
- 1:00:32Ron Stone singles to right, and with two out,
- 1:00:35Dave Watkins, the catcher, coming up. Watkins
- 1:00:44struck out in the third inning, right -hand hitting
- 1:00:46catcher, 0 for 1. He's done the catching in this
- 1:00:50series. Mike Ryan, who normally plays against
- 1:00:53the Dodgers, has a bruised rib cage. Now Watkins
- 1:00:57going all the way behind the plate. Watkins hit
- 1:01:03a home run the other night into the bleachers
- 1:01:05just to the right of the 400 sign. So he's got
- 1:01:07a little power. He takes the strike. Two runs,
- 1:01:12four hits for the Dodgers. No runs, two hits
- 1:01:15for the Phillies. Fifth inning, Ron Stone at
- 1:01:18first base. The next one inside. One ball, one
- 1:01:23strike. Singer, a backward glance at Stone, who
- 1:01:36is a cautious lead. The pitch to Watkins, he
- 1:01:38jammed him. A foul ball to the right of the plate,
- 1:01:40and Haller has a play. He comes over and makes
- 1:01:42the catch. No runs, one hit, a man left. That's
- 1:01:48the first man left on by the Pills, and at the
- 1:01:50end of four and a half innings, Dodgers 2, Phillies
- 1:01:52nothing. Despite the fact that we stay pretty
- 1:01:55much in one place for about three hours when
- 1:01:57we're doing a ball game, we do get around a little.
- 1:01:59About 6 ,000 miles worth on the average road
- 1:02:02trip, and on the really long ones, it's really
- 1:02:03too long. And when you're in the middle of one
- 1:02:05of those trips, say in Chicago in August, and
- 1:02:08it's around 100 degrees, boy, there are times
- 1:02:10when you're not averse to dipping your bill in
- 1:02:13a glass of beer. And I'll tell you one thing
- 1:02:14you'll discover in New York or Chicago or Atlanta
- 1:02:17or Houston. There is no better beer than that
- 1:02:20comfortable Bergie you get back home. No beer
- 1:02:22tastes better or is colder or wetter or more
- 1:02:25refreshing than Bergie. And Bergie is the comfortable
- 1:02:28beer. Comfortable beer. Easy to drink and still
- 1:02:31good tasting. Glass after comfortable glass because
- 1:02:34it's brewed with soft water. There's no other
- 1:02:37beer like it. And there's no other place you
- 1:02:39can get it except right around home. Well, I
- 1:02:41hope you take some home today. Take home six
- 1:02:43cold cans or bottles of Bergie and taste it.
- 1:02:46Got it right there, and you don't have to travel
- 1:02:486 ,000 miles to find out about the comfortable
- 1:02:50beer, Bergie. On the message board, happy birthday
- 1:02:55to Mrs. Clara West of West Covina. She was among
- 1:02:57those who were at the groundbreaking ceremonies
- 1:02:59at Dodger Stadium. Great Dodger fan at the age
- 1:03:02of 94. Bottom of the fifth inning, 2 -0 Dodgers.
- 1:03:08Bill Sudeikis will start, then Tom Haller and
- 1:03:11Ted Sizemore. Rick Wise delivers, and the first
- 1:03:23one to Sudeikis, low, ball one, 1 -0. Bill taking
- 1:03:26a bunt. Wise reading Watkins. Right hander's
- 1:03:381 -0 pitch to Sudeikis, chased and missed. He's
- 1:03:40fooled by that one, 1 -1. Rick Wise, 11 -10.
- 1:03:48Wise is only 24. He figures to be quite a pitcher
- 1:03:52for many years for Philadelphia. The next one
- 1:03:53is swung on and missed. He got him outside and
- 1:03:56now inside in the count one and two. Wise into
- 1:04:08the windup and the one -two pitch on the way.
- 1:04:10Chased and missed and Sudeikis was guessing he
- 1:04:13was going to get another pitch inside and instead
- 1:04:15Wise outflicked him, came outside and he looked
- 1:04:18bad striking out. One away and Tom Haller the
- 1:04:22batter. The third strikeout for Rick Wise. Haller
- 1:04:30fouled out to shortstop Terry Harmon. He's 0
- 1:04:33for 1. Right hander's pitch is taken for a strike
- 1:04:39on the corner. 1 -1. Mets are here tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:04:51Strike one pitch is hit to center fielder Johnny
- 1:04:53Briggs. He's right there. John makes the catch
- 1:04:56for the second out. That'll bring up Ted Sizemore.
- 1:04:59Ted has figured prominently in the series. He
- 1:05:03drove in one run and scored the other in last
- 1:05:07night's 2 -0 victory. In the first game of the
- 1:05:11series, it was Sizemore's base hit, his third
- 1:05:13of the night, that tied up the game, and the
- 1:05:15Dodgers went on to win. And today, he doubled
- 1:05:18and scored a run. So Ted, figuring prominently
- 1:05:22in the Dodger victories against Philadelphia.
- 1:05:24The pitch to Sizemore. Breaking ball low, ball
- 1:05:27one, 1 -0. Here's a 1 -0 pitch. Sizemore waiting,
- 1:05:38and Wise delivers, and it's outside, ball two.
- 1:05:41Good ballplayers play until it is just impossible
- 1:05:44not to play, and Sizemore fits into that category.
- 1:05:48He played the other night against Montreal with
- 1:05:51a blinding headache. He said he could hardly
- 1:05:54see straight, but he still wanted to play. Fits
- 1:05:57inside. Naturally, he did not have a good night.
- 1:06:03But it didn't bother him. He just checked in
- 1:06:05anyway. Fortunately for Ted... That one headache
- 1:06:09has since gone. Here's the 3 -0 pitch. Over for
- 1:06:12a strike. 3 -1. Size more winning with two out
- 1:06:21in the fifth inning. 2 -0 Dodgers. Wise ready.
- 1:06:24Rick delivers. And the pitch is low. Ball four.
- 1:06:28So Ted's aboard with a walk. That's the first
- 1:06:32pass issued by Wise. Sizemore sure has been on
- 1:06:38base a lot against Philadelphia. Seven times
- 1:06:45in the three games, Sizemore's been on base.
- 1:06:49They've kept him off base only twice. So seven
- 1:06:52out of nine at bat, Ted has gotten to first base.
- 1:06:54He draws the throw and gets back. Sizemore started
- 1:07:01the day at 270. He's stolen four bases. Singer
- 1:07:04fouled the first one away on one. Two outs, fifth
- 1:07:15inning. Dodgers two, Phillies nothing. The Phillies
- 1:07:18are not going to worry very much about Sizemore
- 1:07:20trying to steal. It is certainly not a percentage
- 1:07:22play for him to go. Pitch high, one and one.
- 1:07:25Singer is not considered that good a hitter.
- 1:07:30So if Sizemore steals, the odds still are that
- 1:07:33Singer's not going to pick him up. And if Sizemore's
- 1:07:35thrown out, then you have the pitchers starting
- 1:07:37the next inning. So it doesn't figure he'd go.
- 1:07:40Pitch foul back in the count, one and two. Singer
- 1:07:42with the bat. has seven hits, two RBIs. The two
- 1:07:49hitting pitchers on the Dodgers staff, Osteen
- 1:07:51with 22 hits, and Sutton with 14. One and two,
- 1:07:57the count. The pitch is popped in the air, fouled
- 1:08:00back of the plate, and out of play in the second
- 1:08:02deck, directly behind Holmes. Nothing new on
- 1:08:06the scoreboard. We told you it's raining in Atlanta.
- 1:08:08It's 8 -4 Chicago, and the Cubs waiting their
- 1:08:11turn to come to the plate in the ninth inning.
- 1:08:14The Mets, eight, and the Giants, nothing in the
- 1:08:16bottom of the sixth of their first game. Pittsburgh,
- 1:08:19Houston, 2 -2 at the end of seven. Montreal,
- 1:08:22two. San Diego, nothing at the end of three and
- 1:08:25a half. Cincinnati beat the Cardinals, 7 -5.
- 1:08:27Singer fouls another one away. And hold it. There
- 1:08:32was a balk on that last pitch. The second base
- 1:08:35umpire, Vargo. George Myatt goes after the mound.
- 1:08:39But Wise accused of balking. So Ted Sizemore
- 1:08:43goes to second base. And Myatt goes out there
- 1:08:46to talk to the second base umpire. Most of the
- 1:08:50time, you'll see a balk call by the first base
- 1:08:52umpire or the plate umpire. Not too often by
- 1:08:55the second base umpire, but after Myatt finds
- 1:08:58out why, he apparently is placated and goes back
- 1:09:01to the dugout. Final score, Detroit beats Seattle,
- 1:09:057 -2. Wilson, the winner, Braybender, the loser.
- 1:09:10Minnesota beat Boston 6 -2. Washington over Oakland
- 1:09:138 -3. New York over Kansas City 5 -3. The pitch
- 1:09:18to Singer flung out and missed, and down he goes.
- 1:09:20No runs, no hits, a man left. And at the end
- 1:09:23of five, Dodgers 2, Phillies nothing. You know,
- 1:09:27more and more companies today play a lot of different
- 1:09:30positions in the business world. They're in this
- 1:09:32and that and about everything. Well, our friend
- 1:09:34Farmer John continues to stick to the one business
- 1:09:37he knows best, and that business is sports. Well,
- 1:09:40maybe that's the reason Farmer John's fresh pork
- 1:09:41roasts, pork chops, and spare ribs are the finest
- 1:09:44you can buy. Farmer John goes all the way back
- 1:09:46to the famous corn country for his pork. Then
- 1:09:49he ships this fine, fresh, eastern corn -fed
- 1:09:51pork out here live. And it's U .S. inspected
- 1:09:54and dressed fresh right here in the West. Most
- 1:09:56other packers, you know, ship their pork in frozen
- 1:09:59or cold storage. Well, that's why Farmer John
- 1:10:01pork is so fresh and so fresh tasting. Enjoy
- 1:10:04a lean, luscious Farmer John pork roast soon.
- 1:10:07Or how about some sweet succulent Farmer John
- 1:10:09pork cut? Or pick up a batch of marvelous meaty
- 1:10:13Farmer John spare ribs. So just be sure to ask
- 1:10:16the butcher for Farmer John pork, gold medal
- 1:10:19winner at the California State Fair. Don't forget
- 1:10:21it, Farmer John. Two to five innings, the Dodgers
- 1:10:28leading the Phillies 2 -0. And today's centennial
- 1:10:30celebrity just took his bow, Alex Ferguson. A
- 1:10:33rookie pitcher in 1921, with the New York Yankees'
- 1:10:36first pennant -winning team, he spent 17 years
- 1:10:39in pro ball. Finished his career playing for
- 1:10:41Casey Sengal at Toledo. Alex Ferguson, now retired,
- 1:10:46lives in Camarillo for the past five years, and
- 1:10:48we're happy to honor him today as our centennial
- 1:10:50celebrity. Alex Ferguson. Sixth inning, 2 -0
- 1:10:57Dodgers. Cookie Rojas. Rick Wise and Terry Harmon.
- 1:11:07The Dodgers will have a new face here tomorrow.
- 1:11:10And with Jim Brewer sidelined, he might very
- 1:11:14well be dropped right into the fire. That would
- 1:11:16be pitcher Warren Jenkins. Rojas takes high ball
- 1:11:19one. Jenkins was purchased by the Dodgers from
- 1:11:22the Washington Senators organization. And he
- 1:11:26is eligible to play. tomorrow. The 1 -0 pitch
- 1:11:29is popped in the air. Sizemore and Wills go out.
- 1:11:32Davis comes in. It's Sizemore for the catch.
- 1:11:35There will also be several other youngsters who
- 1:11:38will arrive here tomorrow. Steve Garvey, a third
- 1:11:43baseman and first baseman with a lot of power.
- 1:11:46And the Dodgers have him as a star of the near
- 1:11:48future. Garvey will come from the Albuquerque
- 1:11:51club. And then Tuesday, a half a dozen players.
- 1:11:57Bob Stinson, Tommy Hutton, Bob Valentine, John
- 1:11:59Miller, Von Joshua, and Billy Buckner. So some
- 1:12:02of the new blood will be here by Tuesday. Pitch
- 1:12:04to Wise, missing, ball one. The next one is swung
- 1:12:10on and missed, one and one. In Atlanta, it has
- 1:12:15stopped raining now, so the Cubs will come to
- 1:12:17the plate, leading eight to four in the ninth
- 1:12:18inning. Singers, one -one pitch, breaking ball,
- 1:12:23foul tipped, one and two. Bill has struck out
- 1:12:27five. Wise has struck out four. Singer is allowed
- 1:12:32just two hits. A single to center by Darren Johnson.
- 1:12:35A single to right by Ron Stone. Half swing on
- 1:12:37a breaking ball that Wise held up in the count
- 1:12:40two and two. Bill ready in the 2 -2 pitch. Pass
- 1:12:52ball, hit off first, down the line, slicing foul,
- 1:12:55out of play. Still 2 -2. On deck, leadoff man,
- 1:13:11Terry Harmon. 2 -2 pitch to Wise. The fly ball
- 1:13:17to left field and Motta was playing him over
- 1:13:19towards left center. It's going to drop inside
- 1:13:21the line for a hit. And Rick holds on with a
- 1:13:24long single. Nice throw by Motta to keep the
- 1:13:27pitcher at first base. For Rick Wise, a good
- 1:13:30hitting pitcher. That's his 17th hit. He's no
- 1:13:32slouch with the bat. And the batter will be Terry
- 1:13:35Harmon. The only thing that would surprise the
- 1:13:41Dodgers on that. They didn't think that Wise
- 1:13:44could pull Singer quite that much. Here's Harmon,
- 1:13:48twice grounded to Will. Singer looking wise and
- 1:13:56not holding him on, and the pitch to Harmon is
- 1:13:57low. Ball one. On deck, Johnny Briggs. Callow
- 1:14:06walks the ball out to the mound to talk to Singer.
- 1:14:16One ball and no strikes for Terry Harmon. Now
- 1:14:27the 1 -0 pitch is lifted to right center field.
- 1:14:30Davis is there, backed up by Crawford. Will he
- 1:14:32make the catch? Wise holding. Johnny Briggs coming
- 1:14:38up. Say when it comes to winning, Union 76 Racing
- 1:14:41Gasoline has won more races in the West than
- 1:14:43any other brand. Royal 76 Premium is the street
- 1:14:46version of the same winning blend. Your chance
- 1:14:48to ride with a winner. Briggs left -hand batter
- 1:14:56waiting. Takes a breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:14:590 -1. John straightened one out in the fourth
- 1:15:02inning in a line drive at Willie Crawford in
- 1:15:04right center. He hit the ball hard. And on deck,
- 1:15:09Richie Allen. A pitch outside. 1 -1 the count.
- 1:15:13Dodgers two. Phillies nothing. Two out in the
- 1:15:16sixth inning. Dodgers won last night's ballgame
- 1:15:18two to nothing. 1 -1 pitch. Fastball. Low. Ball
- 1:15:25two. Soon one. Chicago failed to score in the
- 1:15:33ninth, so Atlanta now at bat. It's last at bat.
- 1:15:36Trailing 8 -4. Briggs fouls the next one away,
- 1:15:39and they count two and two. They're in the bottom
- 1:15:53of the eighth inning at Houston. The Astros 2
- 1:15:56-2 with Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh has made a
- 1:15:58change. Houston, certainly not out of it, although
- 1:16:02they are starting today, trailing by four. 2
- 1:16:08-2 pitch to Briggs. Fastball popped in the air
- 1:16:10to shallow left. Wills out and looking for help,
- 1:16:12and he's got it. Moda and Manny will make the
- 1:16:14catch. No runs ahead a man left at the end of
- 1:16:20five and a half Dodgers to Phillies nothing Two
- 1:16:29runs four hits for the Dodgers no runs three
- 1:16:31hits for the Phillies And Maury Wilson started
- 1:16:36off he struck out and singled his base hit picked
- 1:16:38up the second Dodger run in the third inning
- 1:16:40Then he was thrown out stealing But Maury Wills
- 1:16:49starting it off. Wills hitting left -handed.
- 1:16:59Darren Johnson plays him in on the grass and
- 1:17:01close to the line at third. And the outfield
- 1:17:04shading him to left field. Wise reading Watkins'
- 1:17:09signs. Rick into the windup. And the first pitch
- 1:17:12to Maury Wills. He fakes a bunt, takes low. Ball
- 1:17:14one. 1 -0. Now the 1 -0 pitch on the way. Wills
- 1:17:29runs to bunt, but it's in on the hands. Ball
- 1:17:31two. Tommy Seaver has the Giants by the scruff
- 1:17:35of the neck. In the bottom of the seventh inning,
- 1:17:36the Mets leading the Giants 8 -0. And, of course,
- 1:17:40Clyde King will be very careful about burning
- 1:17:42up pitches in that first game with a second game
- 1:17:44due up. Here's the 2 -0 pitch on the way. Low
- 1:17:49ball three. The probable pitcher in the second
- 1:17:51game for the Giants is Don Bryant. Jim McAndrew
- 1:17:59figures to go for the Mets in the second game.
- 1:18:023 -0 pitch to Wills. A strike. Green one. Allen,
- 1:18:07Callison, and Johnson when the Phillies come
- 1:18:09up in the seventh inning. So they're stirring
- 1:18:12around in the bullpen. The pitch to Wills. A
- 1:18:16strike. Down in the bullpen. Al Raffo gets up.
- 1:18:25And he's going to start the warm -up. Right -hander.
- 1:18:293 -2 pitch to Maury Wills. Ground ball. Up the
- 1:18:33middle. Base hit. So Wills chimes in with his
- 1:18:38second hit. He's 2 for 3. And the batter will
- 1:18:41be Manny Moda. Here's Manny Mota. Hit back to
- 1:19:08the box and grounded to short. Mota around to
- 1:19:12Bond, takes a breaking ball outside. Ball one.
- 1:19:15Mota has not had a hot bat lately. In fact, against
- 1:19:18Philadelphia, he is 0 for 6. He is 0 for 10.
- 1:19:24He has not had a hit in a series. And over the
- 1:19:30last few days, let's see, he's 0 for 11. 12,
- 1:19:3413, 14, 15, 16. He tries to punt, but the pitch
- 1:19:39is over his head to the backstop. And down to
- 1:19:42second goes Wills and holds on. We'll see if
- 1:19:44it's a wild pitch or not. It's a fastball. Just
- 1:19:53to give you an idea of Mota, he has one hit in
- 1:19:55his last 20 at -bats. So many has fallen upon
- 1:19:58lean times. And in the Dodger dugout, his last
- 1:20:02at -bat in the third inning, trainer Bill Bulow
- 1:20:05is in the corner taking motion pictures of Moda.
- 1:20:08They'll be developed and studied to find out
- 1:20:10why the slump. Why one for 20. Al Raffo continues
- 1:20:15to throw back of pitcher Rick Wise. And Moda
- 1:20:20waiting. Now Manny will try to go away, of course,
- 1:20:23to get Wills at least to third. And Morrie dancing
- 1:20:26away, and Wise has to get off the bag. 2 -0 the
- 1:20:32count of Manny Moda. Final score, White Sox 7
- 1:20:36with 3 in the 9th, Cleveland 6. The 2 -0 pitch,
- 1:20:40a pushed bunt up along first base. Down to get
- 1:20:42it is Wise, throws Moda out, and on the sacrifice,
- 1:20:45will take third. So Manny in a slump, bunts his
- 1:20:49man over, and they'll leave it up to Willie Davis.
- 1:21:03In case you aren't Willis, Willie has done it.
- 1:21:05He grounded out in the first inning and hit a
- 1:21:08shot up the middle for a base hit in the fourth.
- 1:21:10So he sits safely in 28 straight. Infield up
- 1:21:19as Willie tries to pick up Wills now. The pitch
- 1:21:25to him is on the outside corner. Davis. If he
- 1:21:31gets Wills home, he'll have picked up his 50th
- 1:21:33run batted in. It's raining again in Atlanta,
- 1:21:38so time out down there. It's the sticky time
- 1:21:41of the year in August in Atlanta. Lots of humidity.
- 1:21:460 -1 to Willie Davis. Wise set delivers. Willie
- 1:21:51hits a fly ball to center field. Not very far.
- 1:21:56Briggs for the catch. Wills is going to come
- 1:21:57anyway. The throw to the plate. He's going to
- 1:21:59make it. It was not a very good throw by Johnny
- 1:22:12Briggs. I'm sure he can make much better throws
- 1:22:15than that one. And Wills scores. Willie Davis
- 1:22:18picks up his 50th RBI. And the Dodgers lead 3
- 1:22:22-0. So the Dodgers have done it with a home run
- 1:22:28in the second inning. Sizemore doubled and Will
- 1:22:32singled him home in the third. And here in the
- 1:22:35sixth, the pass ball turns out to be the big
- 1:22:37play, just as a pass ball was the biggest single
- 1:22:40play last night. Gave the Dodgers a 2 -0 victory.
- 1:22:45Parker takes a strike. 0 -1 to counter West.
- 1:22:54Grounded a short and struck out 0 for 2. Tomorrow
- 1:23:04afternoon, the Dodgers and the Mets. The Mets
- 1:23:08who are just tearing up California teams. Here's
- 1:23:14the strike one pitch on the way. High. One and
- 1:23:17one. The Mets won. 16 out of 18 from California
- 1:23:22teams at Shea Stadium. And the Dodgers, who lost
- 1:23:26all six back there, feel they owe them a couple
- 1:23:28of lumps. The 1 -1 pitch to Parker outside. Ball
- 1:23:33two. Pitches, head back to the right of the mound.
- 1:23:50Down to get it is Wise, and he throws to first
- 1:23:52of the out. So one run, one hit, and the pass
- 1:24:01ball gives the Dodgers the run, and at the end
- 1:24:03of six, Dodgers leave till he's nothing. Hey,
- 1:24:06Stan Kenton, who do you look up to when you want
- 1:24:08to give a new tune your own personal style? I
- 1:24:10look to our Rangers. They know our approach and
- 1:24:13the way we look at things musically and can almost
- 1:24:14make any tune work. Hey, Stan Kenton. Who do
- 1:24:17you look up to when your car is out of tune?
- 1:24:19I look up to 76. The maestro of my Union 76 station
- 1:24:23and his band of certified servicemen have what
- 1:24:25it takes to make an engine sing. Look up to 76
- 1:24:42for products and services to keep your car in
- 1:24:45perfect tune. The people at Union 76 have even
- 1:24:48worked up an arrangement to help you pay your
- 1:24:49bill. It's called 76 Revolving Credit. That sounds
- 1:24:53like a helpful note. When you're looking for
- 1:24:55someone to look after you, you're up in 76. Through
- 1:25:08six innings, a Dodgers three runs, five hits
- 1:25:10and no errors. The Phillies, no runs, three hits
- 1:25:13and no errors. with Bill Singer just breezing
- 1:25:18along so far. In fact, he has faced two over
- 1:25:20the minimum. He's pitched only 20 batters in
- 1:25:22six innings while striking out five. So as they
- 1:25:26go to the seven, three -nothing Dodgers. For
- 1:25:28more play -by -play, here's Jerry. All right,
- 1:25:30Vinny, and here's Richie Allen at bat. Richie
- 1:25:31has struck out twice. He has struck out six consecutive
- 1:25:34times now. And Bill Singer ready to work for
- 1:25:38him. Richie Allen stepping in. It is 3 -0, and
- 1:25:45here's the pitcher on the way. Curve is in for
- 1:25:47a strike on the inside corner. Allen waiting,
- 1:25:550 -1. Now the windup again on the pitch by Singer.
- 1:25:57Curve is in high. Ball one, 1 -1. The Dodgers
- 1:26:01leading 3 -0. They scored one at a time in the
- 1:26:03second, third, and sixth inning. Now it's a wind
- 1:26:10-up and a 1 -1 pitch on the way to Richie. A
- 1:26:12swing and a drive to center field. Willie Davis
- 1:26:14there, backs up and makes a leaping catch as
- 1:26:16the ball almost went over him. Willie had to
- 1:26:19retreat quickly on a line drive that was really
- 1:26:21knuckling out towards center field. He was in
- 1:26:25a step or two and then lunged backwards to handle
- 1:26:28it for the out. So a line drive out by Allen
- 1:26:30to center. He hit it hard. Here's Johnny Callison
- 1:26:34at bat. And we'll pause for station identification.
- 1:26:37This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 1:26:40You can charge your purchases and take many months
- 1:26:42to pay at Baptist Hospital of Phoenix, 6025 North
- 1:26:4520th Avenue, Phoenix, where you can use your
- 1:26:47Arizona Bank Bank AmeriCard. This is KTAR in
- 1:26:51Phoenix. Callison at bat has grounded out and
- 1:26:53flied out. And Singer now ready to work to him.
- 1:26:58The wind up in the pitch on the way. Breaking
- 1:27:00ball that's low. One ball and no strike. Still
- 1:27:03trying to get his 17th win. Has a free run lead
- 1:27:05now as he goes into the 7th inning. Raining again
- 1:27:09in Atlanta. Bottom of the 9th inning with the
- 1:27:10Braves coming to bat in an 8 -4 ball game. Here's
- 1:27:14the 1 -0 pitch. Callison grounds a foul off to
- 1:27:16the right. 1 -1. The Pirates make a pitching
- 1:27:25change in the 8th inning at Houston. Maroney
- 1:27:28under relief. Hartenstein. Pitch to Callison.
- 1:27:36A little high with the breaking ball. Two and
- 1:27:38one. The Giants and the Mets have played seven
- 1:27:43now, and the Mets still lead eight to nothing.
- 1:27:46Tom Seaver trying for his 19th, going all the
- 1:27:48way on that one. Here's a swing and a drive to
- 1:27:52left field. Well hit. Going in the corner for
- 1:27:53it is Manny Mota, and this ball is going to be
- 1:27:55up against the box seat railing and bounces back
- 1:27:57toward the infield. Callison is at second. Mota
- 1:28:00still chasing the ball. Callison goes into third
- 1:28:02base with a stand -up triple. The ball hit the
- 1:28:05box seat railing and must have rebounded 100
- 1:28:07feet away from Modoc. So Manny went to the railing
- 1:28:12for the ball and then had to retreat back into
- 1:28:16medium left field to pick it up. So a triple
- 1:28:19for Callison. So a three -base hit for Callison
- 1:28:30against the box feet railing in the left field
- 1:28:32corner as Callison goes the opposite way. And
- 1:28:35here is Darren Johnson at bat. He has strangled
- 1:28:37and struck out. Grounded foul at the plate. Strike
- 1:28:40one. Well, then he ran as far as he could right
- 1:28:45to the railing. Then the ball hit on the rail
- 1:28:47about four feet from him. Then it rebounded all
- 1:28:50the way back into left field. And he had to turn
- 1:28:53around and go back just as hard as he had gone
- 1:28:54to the railing. He was all alone on the play.
- 1:29:00One strike. Johnson waiting. The infield back.
- 1:29:02Dodgers lead by three. They'll go for the out
- 1:29:04and give up a run. Singer, of course, would like
- 1:29:07to get the shutout, but he's worrying about winning
- 1:29:10the ball game more important. Here's the windup
- 1:29:12and the pitch to Johnson. Swung on and missed.
- 1:29:15Strike two. Singer has struck out five, has not
- 1:29:17walked a batter. The bill ahead of the count.
- 1:29:29Now the pitch on the way. Johnson's the ground
- 1:29:31ball to the right side. Parker up with it. Will
- 1:29:33throw to first base. The singer coming as the
- 1:29:35run scores. So Johnson grounds out as Callison
- 1:29:40comes in with the first Philadelphia run. And
- 1:29:43here's Ron Stone coming up. He has singled and
- 1:29:47grounded into a double play. So a triple by Johnny
- 1:29:51Callison and a ground out by Johnson to get the
- 1:29:54run in. Stone. hitting .242. They're playing
- 1:30:00again in Atlanta. And Regan is pitching now for
- 1:30:06Chicago. So they just hold from the start. Abernathy,
- 1:30:09Aguirre, and now Regan. Here's the ground ball
- 1:30:12to Wills. It's sort of first in time, and the
- 1:30:14inning is over. The Phillies show one run on
- 1:30:16one hit, and none left. The score at the end
- 1:30:20of six of the happenings, Dodgers 3, Philadelphia
- 1:30:221. Well, we're celebrating baseball's 100th anniversary
- 1:30:26this year, as you've probably heard. And there's
- 1:30:29another little celebration going on, too. The
- 1:30:31Burgermeister Brewery's 101st anniversary. 101
- 1:30:35years ago, right there where it is today at Tencent
- 1:30:38Bryant in San Francisco, the first brewery that
- 1:30:40makes the comfortable beer opened its doors.
- 1:30:42By way of congratulations, you might lift a glass
- 1:30:45of that soft water brew and say, Burgie, you
- 1:30:47old son of a gun, happy 101, and have a good
- 1:30:50day. It's the comfortable time of year. Now the
- 1:31:23last of the seventh inning. Good crowd. to the
- 1:31:53seventh inning. Good crowd on hand today, standing
- 1:31:55for the seventh inning stretch with Crawford,
- 1:31:57Sudeikis, and Haller. They'll appear against
- 1:32:00right -hander Rick Wise. Wise and Singer locked
- 1:32:02up in a ballgame today, and it's 3 -1 the Dodgers
- 1:32:05lead, scoring one at a time in the second, third,
- 1:32:08and sixth inning, with Philadelphia getting a
- 1:32:10run in the seventh. They're playing again in
- 1:32:13Atlanta, the rain of seats, as we told you, and
- 1:32:16Regan now will try to retire the Braves and get
- 1:32:18the Cubs a win in Atlanta. The Cubs move to Cincinnati
- 1:32:24tomorrow. Here's Willie Crawford at bat. The
- 1:32:36Cubs and the Reds have a suspended game to complete.
- 1:32:38They played seven innings in the game earlier,
- 1:32:40and they had to call it because of a curfew.
- 1:32:44Crawford fouls one away and it's strike one.
- 1:32:46And in that game, the Cubs are leading 5 -4.
- 1:32:49They will finish that game on Tuesday. So the
- 1:32:53Reds are one run down with a couple innings to
- 1:32:55go against the Cubs at home. And that game has
- 1:32:58not, of course, been put into the standings as
- 1:33:00yet. Here's the pitch on the way. Inside low
- 1:33:07for a ball, one and one. If the Cubs win that
- 1:33:10game, then the Reds actually would have their
- 1:33:1358th loss as of now. They have 57, and the Giants
- 1:33:17and the Dodgers each have 58. So they'd be all
- 1:33:19even on that loss side. The 1 -1 pitch. Outside.
- 1:33:23Ball two. Two and one. Of course, they will not
- 1:33:24put that in the standings until Wednesday morning.
- 1:33:28So it does not come up until Tuesday night. Houston
- 1:33:30scored twice in the eighth and now leads Pittsburgh
- 1:33:32four to two. Going to the ninth. Two -one pitch
- 1:33:36to Crawford. Pop to the short center field. Waiting
- 1:33:39for it. It's Briggs and makes the catch for the
- 1:33:42out. Crawford lost his bat on that one. Fly ball
- 1:33:45to center. One down and the batter will be Bill
- 1:33:47Sudeikis. Bill back in the lineup after about
- 1:33:49ten days off with illness. Has grounded out and
- 1:33:53struck out batting 241. 13 homers and 50 runs
- 1:33:56batted in. Well, Chicago beat Atlanta 8 -4 as
- 1:34:09Regan got them out in the ninth inning. So Chicago
- 1:34:12wins that one and Atlanta losing in a wild one
- 1:34:17in Georgia. Now the pitch to Sudeikis. Inside
- 1:34:20for a ball. One ball and no strike. Before today
- 1:34:23started, the Dodgers were a half a game ahead
- 1:34:26of Atlanta. And now they're trying to pick up
- 1:34:29another full game on the Atlanta team. Pitch,
- 1:34:34slow ball, two. Two and oh. Two nothing count.
- 1:34:47Wise delivers to Sudeikis, a bouncing ball to
- 1:34:49the right side of the mound. Wise up with it,
- 1:34:51underhand toss to Allen, and in time, two outs.
- 1:34:53Sudeikis bouncing out, pitch to the first. Post
- 1:34:56from the winner, he is now 16 -8, and Nico, they
- 1:35:00lose their 18 -12. They have 33 ,000 in Atlanta
- 1:35:04today. Into the ninth inning, New York leads
- 1:35:07San Francisco 8 -0. Al Oliver, home run for the
- 1:35:15Pirates in the ninth. That leaves them one run
- 1:35:17shy. Houston leading 4 -3 playing in the ninth.
- 1:35:22Here's Howler. 0 -2. Wise ready to pitch. Line
- 1:35:26foul off third base and down to the lower stand.
- 1:35:28Strike one to Tom Howler. Tommy Seaver on the
- 1:35:40way to his 19th, and he would be first in the
- 1:35:42league to reach 19 as Necro has failed today.
- 1:35:46Haller hits a liner into left field near the
- 1:35:48line. Coming on to Stone, makes a sliding catch
- 1:35:50for the odd. Nice play. Stone, who carries the
- 1:35:54glove on the right hand as he throws left, came
- 1:35:56skidding along to catch that ball and take a
- 1:35:59base hit away from Haller. Side out on the seventh,
- 1:36:02and the score at the end of seven innings of
- 1:36:05play, the Dodgers three and Philadelphia one.
- 1:36:09For friends in his own way, Farmer John's a lot
- 1:36:11like a good switch hitter. Batting on the meat
- 1:36:13department side of your market, he's sure to
- 1:36:15make a hit with his Farmer John ham, bacon, sausage,

- 1:37:11First seven innings, the Dodgers leading three
- 1:37:13runs, five hits, no errors. The Phillies one
- 1:37:15run, four hits, no errors. Bill Singer against
- 1:37:17Rick Wise. And the Phillies come to bat now in
- 1:37:19the eighth inning. Singer warming up with catcher
- 1:37:23Tommy Haller. Let's go back to the action. And
- 1:37:24here's Finn. All right, Jerry. Eighth inning,
- 1:37:27three to one, Dodgers. We'll have Larry Heisel.
- 1:37:35Heisel will come up and bat for catcher Dave
- 1:37:38Watkins with Rojas on deck. The Phillies trying
- 1:37:43to make a move here in the eighth inning, and
- 1:37:44Bill Singer ready and delivers. And a fastball,
- 1:37:46a strike to Heisel, 0 -1. Larry is Philadelphia's
- 1:37:50nominee for candidate of the year. Heisel hitting
- 1:37:54.266, has 20 home runs, 56 runs batted in. Strike
- 1:37:59one pitch, inside, 1 -1. Heisel has a lot of
- 1:38:02power. But as a rookie, he pays for it. He strikes
- 1:38:05out a great deal. It is conceivable that Heisel
- 1:38:10could break the strikeout record. He takes low
- 1:38:14ball, too. He has played in 125 games. He has
- 1:38:19struck out 143 times. 2 -1 pitch to Heisel. Swung
- 1:38:27on and missed. Strike two. 2 -2. Paid attendance
- 1:38:3319 ,357. 19 ,357. Sure hope you'll spend Labor
- 1:38:39Day with us. The Mets will be here. Pitch filed
- 1:38:42away by Heisel. Here's a two -two pitch to Heisel.
- 1:39:02Breaking ball got him looking. Now that's 144
- 1:39:05times the young fella has gone down on strike.
- 1:39:09That'll bring up Cookie Rojas. Another fella
- 1:39:13who has struck out a great deal. We don't have
- 1:39:15the numbers handy, but he's right around Heisel.
- 1:39:17In fact, he might have struck out even more than
- 1:39:19Heisel. He's a great kid player with the Giants,
- 1:39:22Bobby Barnes. He strikes out a lot. Sookie Rojas
- 1:39:29takes the strike. Going one. On deck is Mike
- 1:39:32Ryan, who will bat for Wise. One out on the eighth.
- 1:39:40Three to one Dodgers. Singers breaking ball state
- 1:39:42inside. One and one. Here's the 1 -1 pitch on
- 1:39:56the way. Line drive off Singer's glove, and he
- 1:39:59deflected it back towards the third base foul
- 1:40:01line. Throws it through Parker, but it's backed
- 1:40:04up by Willie Crawford. Boy, was that thing hit
- 1:40:07like a shot, and it was like hitting a line drive
- 1:40:10into a revolving door. It went in, spun Singer
- 1:40:13around, and came flying out of his glove back
- 1:40:16towards the third base foul line. So that is
- 1:40:19indeed a hit. For Cookie Ross, he almost took
- 1:40:23the webbing right out of Singer's glove. So the
- 1:40:31batter will be not Mike Ryan because Ryan, as
- 1:40:34soon as there's somebody on base, there's a chance
- 1:40:36to hit him to a double play. So they switch and
- 1:40:39now bring up Rick Joseph. And Ryan has not yet
- 1:40:42been in the game. So make it Rick Joseph hitting.
- 1:40:49Ryan can still be used later on if necessary.
- 1:40:54Ray Lamb and Pete Mickelson moving around in
- 1:40:56the Dodger bullpen. One out on the eighth, three
- 1:40:59to one Dodgers. There's still a lot of baseball
- 1:41:02left in this one. Joseph right -hand batter hits
- 1:41:06the first one foul off first back into the crowd
- 1:41:09on one. They have almost 25 ,000 in the park
- 1:41:16today. with 19 -3, 57 pays. The next one is low.
- 1:41:27One ball, one strike. One and one to Rick Joseph.
- 1:41:39Kerry Harmon, the shortstop on deck. Singers,
- 1:41:44one -one pitch. Joseph takes in the third ball,
- 1:41:46too. One -one. I think the first time the Dodgers
- 1:41:48ever saw Rick Joseph was in Philadelphia. He
- 1:41:52came up as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded
- 1:41:53against Ron Paranoski and hit a grand slam home
- 1:41:56run, so they marked him well. He's hitting .283.
- 1:42:07Joseph waiting. The 2 -1 pitch way inside. Ball
- 1:42:11three. 3 -1. So Singer... Struck out of high
- 1:42:17school. Got Rojas a smash off Singer's glove
- 1:42:22for a base hit, and he's fallen behind to Rick
- 1:42:25Joseph, 3 -1. Terry Harmon on deck. 3 -1 pitch.
- 1:42:30Swung on and missed, strike two. He might have
- 1:42:33chased ball four. It was a questionable pitch.
- 1:42:383 -2. Big pitch for Singer. He certainly doesn't
- 1:42:45want to put the tying runs aboard. And he comes
- 1:42:473 -2. The runner goes. Swung on and missed. Throw
- 1:42:50down to Sizemore. They double up Rojas. So the
- 1:43:01double play, K -2 -4. Bill Singer gets his seventh
- 1:43:06strikeout for the Phillies and the A's. No runs
- 1:43:08are hit. Nobody left. And at the end of seven
- 1:43:10and a half. Dodgers 3, Phillies 1. Camp West

- 1:44:07that's... Camp West Industries, 2802 Grand Avenue
- 1:44:11in Phoenix. Bottom of the eighth inning, the
- 1:44:19Dodgers 3, the Phillies 1. It's all over at candlestick
- 1:44:23as the Mets beat the Giants 8 -0. That's the
- 1:44:27first of two games. Jim McAndrew and Don Bryant,
- 1:44:31the probables in the second game. And remember,
- 1:44:33the Mets will be here tomorrow afternoon. Jim
- 1:44:35Bunning will draw. Jerry Kuzman is his opposite
- 1:44:39number. Mike Ryan is the new catcher. And Al
- 1:44:44Raffo is the new pitcher. The pitcher is batting
- 1:44:50seventh. And the catcher batting ninth. So Ryan
- 1:44:55hits ninth. And Raffo hits seventh. Rick Wise
- 1:45:17went seven innings, allowed three runs and five
- 1:45:19hits. He walked only one, struck out three, and
- 1:45:26he leaves trailing. Here's Sizemore. Takes Raffo's
- 1:45:29first pitch and is missing. Ball one. 1 -0. Sizemore
- 1:45:35has doubled and walked. Raffo comes back with
- 1:45:39a pitch outside. Rappel pitches like an extension
- 1:45:45ladder. He starts to deliver and deliver and
- 1:45:48still deliver before he finally gets there. He's
- 1:45:50a big fella. The 2 -0 pitch. Low ball three.
- 1:46:05So Sizemore, who's been on base seven out of
- 1:46:07nine times in this series, trying to make it
- 1:46:10eight out of ten. Phillies have been unable to
- 1:46:12keep more of the base pass. The 3 -0 pitch is
- 1:46:18high. He's on again. Eight out of ten. Teddy
- 1:46:20has gotten to first base. He has really been
- 1:46:23a thorn in the side of the Phillies. And Bill
- 1:46:25Singer coming up. Bill Singer. Bill Singer. Has
- 1:46:37allowed one run, five hits. Gets a well -deserved
- 1:46:40round of applause. Singer. Got a little ground
- 1:46:45ball by Richie Allen. He got his man over to
- 1:46:48third. And then struck out in the fifth inning.
- 1:46:51He's over two. Raffle off the rubber. There's
- 1:47:01a bunt to Raffo. The right -hander throws down
- 1:47:04to Harmon for one. Back to Rojas. Double play.
- 1:47:07So the double play goes 1 -6 -4. Raffo to Harmon
- 1:47:12to Rojas. Just like that, two out in the eighth
- 1:47:15inning. Raffo talking to Harmon, and Maury Wills
- 1:47:27consuming a little time. Allowing Singer to get
- 1:47:30back to the dugout. Al Rappo was born in San
- 1:47:42Francisco. He's 6 '5", 210 pounders. He attended
- 1:47:47LA City College. He graduated from Los Angeles
- 1:47:53High. Al Rappo. Line drive, base hit, and Willis
- 1:47:58is three for four. So Morris struck out his first
- 1:48:04at bat, and he has consecutive singles since
- 1:48:06then. That'll bring up Manny Moda. In case you
- 1:48:10have not been with us until just a moment or
- 1:48:12so ago, Willie Davis singled up the middle in
- 1:48:15the fourth inning. So he has hit safely in 28
- 1:48:18consecutive games. So tomorrow, Willie will be
- 1:48:22going after the all -time Dodger record. That's
- 1:48:24just one bit of spice to what should be a great
- 1:48:27Labor Day afternoon here. The Dodgers and the
- 1:48:29Mets. Jim Bunning and Jerry Kuzma. The pitch
- 1:48:36to Mota. Low and inside, ball one. Mota fighting
- 1:48:42a slump. Bill Buehler is taking more pictures
- 1:48:45of Manny right now from the far corner of the
- 1:48:48Dodger dugout. and they'll study and see what's
- 1:48:51brought it about. He's one for 20. Throw to first,
- 1:48:55Wills back to the bag. Boy, it is so tough in
- 1:49:00the big leagues. One little thing can wreck everything.
- 1:49:04And the Dodgers will try and take Moda's swing
- 1:49:06apart and figure out just what. Raffo is watching
- 1:49:10Wills at first base. 3 -1 Dodgers, bottom of
- 1:49:13the eighth. It's getting to be standing room
- 1:49:17only again in the Wild West. Wills goes. The
- 1:49:20pitch swung on and missed. The throw down. He's
- 1:49:23in there. And he actually kicked the ball away
- 1:49:26from Terry Harmon who tried to whirl and tag.
- 1:49:33So Maury who had a streak of nine consecutive
- 1:49:36steals and it was snapped in the third inning
- 1:49:39starts the news. It also means he has stolen
- 1:49:42nine bases in his last seven games. So Maury
- 1:49:47is running at just the right time. He's stolen
- 1:49:5020 bases as a Dodger, 36 for the year. Here's
- 1:49:55the 1 -1 pitch, and instead Rappel backs off
- 1:49:57the rubber. The next one to Motive, missing ball
- 1:50:07two, 2 -1. Houston leading 4 -2, going into the
- 1:50:13ninth inning. And Al Oliver hit a home run in
- 1:50:16the ninth. And the Pirates are still at bat.
- 1:50:20So Houston is hurting in the ninth inning. Blazing
- 1:50:25Game and Billingham have both come in. Raffo
- 1:50:28delivers. Motor takes low and inside ball two.
- 1:50:32Gladding also came in after the home run, we
- 1:50:34believe. The Masters start at the ninth. Gladding,
- 1:50:42Blasingame, and Billingham. So Houston struggling.
- 1:50:453 -1 the count. So Atlanta lost. The Giants lost.
- 1:50:50But Cincinnati won. The pitch. A one -hopper
- 1:50:54banged into right field for a hit. Well coming.
- 1:50:57Callison's throw is cut off by Allen. Ritchie
- 1:51:00running after Moda now. Gives to Terry Harmon.
- 1:51:04Harmon running Moda to Rojas. And Cookie tags
- 1:51:07him out. So it's 9 -3 -6 -4 if you're scoring,
- 1:51:11but the run is over. One run, two hits, nobody
- 1:51:17left. And at the end of eight, Dodgers 4, Phillies
- 1:51:201. Hey, Mickey Rooney, who do you look up to
- 1:51:27when... Look up to? I look up to everybody. No,
- 1:51:31no. I mean, who do you look up to when you're
- 1:51:34looking for a motor oil that's made for your
- 1:51:35high -powered car? Oh, that's entirely different.
- 1:51:39You see, in that case, I look up to 76. You see,
- 1:51:41they got this new Union Super Motor Oil. It sort
- 1:51:44of looks down its nose at engine trouble. And
- 1:51:46it keeps all my cars running like cats. Union
- 1:51:54Super Motor Oil is new. Made for today's cars,
- 1:52:07the ones that run hotter and harder than ever.
- 1:52:10Yesterday's motor oils aren't making it, so Union
- 1:52:12Super is tougher than it has to be. For a minute
- 1:52:15there, I thought you were trying to make trouble.
- 1:52:17When you're looking for someone to listen to
- 1:52:20you, you're up in the air. Now let's force the
- 1:52:25station identification. This is the Los Angeles
- 1:52:27Dodgers Radio Network. Quiet rooms and a tasteful
- 1:52:30atmosphere, and you can make advanced reservations
- 1:52:32at reasonable rates at the Coconut Grove Motel,
- 1:52:342012 West Van Buren, Phoenix, where you can use
- 1:52:36your Arizona Bank Bank AmeriCard. This is KTRI,
- 1:52:39Phoenix. 9th inning, 4 -1 Dodgers as they bid
- 1:52:49to sweep Philadelphia and then prepare for the
- 1:52:52Mets. Gee, that sounds strange, doesn't it? For
- 1:52:57so many years, you'd talk about, well, a battle
- 1:52:59with the Phil's and then hope to get rich with
- 1:53:01the Mets. But not anymore. Terry Harmon takes
- 1:53:05a strike. The Mets ripped up the Giants 8 -0
- 1:53:08in the first game today. They still have another
- 1:53:12to go at Candlestick. Here's the strike one pitch
- 1:53:15to Harmon. A ground ball speared by Sudeikis.
- 1:53:18Phil throws him out. One out in the ninth inning.
- 1:53:25Johnny Briggs, the batter, and Richie Allen on
- 1:53:28deck. Johnny Briggs has popped up, lined out,
- 1:53:37and flied out. He's 0 -3. Bill Singer, good hard
- 1:53:42stuff. He has struck out seven today. Bill delivers,
- 1:53:46fastball away, ball one. He's had a particularly
- 1:53:48hard breaking ball. 1 -0. The next one to break
- 1:53:58the strike. The New York Mets, who will be here
- 1:54:05tomorrow, enjoyed the best month of August of
- 1:54:09anybody in the National League. The 1 -1 pitch
- 1:54:11is grounded foul into the Philly dugout in the
- 1:54:14count 1 and 2. As of the moment, counting the
- 1:54:16victory in the first game, the Mets won 21 out
- 1:54:20of 30 in August, and they still have a second
- 1:54:22game to go. They have played great ball and they're
- 1:54:26here for three starting at 1 p .m. tomorrow.
- 1:54:33One and two to Johnny Briggs. Singer into the
- 1:54:38windup and the one -two pitch outside ball two.
- 1:54:41Two and two. Singer trying to win his 17th. Osteen
- 1:54:48won his 18th. Bunning will try and win his 12th
- 1:54:51tomorrow. Here's the 2 -2 pitch. Outside with
- 1:54:56a fastball. Ball free. Thing popped out of Haller's
- 1:54:59mitt, rolled over his shoulder, and went right
- 1:55:02behind the umpire. 3 -2. 3 -2 pitch. Fastball
- 1:55:16line drive inside the right field foul line and
- 1:55:19down the line. Briggs hits the bag and moves
- 1:55:22on to second base with a line drive double. So
- 1:55:26a one -out double by Johnny Briggs, and that
- 1:55:29will bring up Richie Allen. struck out the first
- 1:55:49two at -bats. That gave him six consecutive strikeouts,
- 1:55:52but in the seventh inning, he lined out to Willie
- 1:55:54Davis. He takes inside, ball one. By the way,
- 1:55:59we told you the Pirates were giving Houston a
- 1:56:01bad time, and they sure were. It was 4 -2 Houston
- 1:56:03going into the ninth, and Pittsburgh came up
- 1:56:05with four. So the Pirates are leading Houston
- 1:56:096 -4, and the Astros now come to bat in the bottom
- 1:56:12of the ninth against Steve Blass. 4 -1 Dodgers.
- 1:56:20One out. The pitch to Allen. Fouled away. Upstairs
- 1:56:23off to the right. 1 -1. Johnny Briggs away from
- 1:56:36second base. Allen closed stands. Waiting. 1
- 1:56:45-1 pitch. Sidearm curve low. Ball two. 2 -1.
- 1:56:52Richly overly closed, kind of peeps out from
- 1:56:54around his left shoulder. Singer's fastball is
- 1:57:02inside and high ball three. On deck, the fine
- 1:57:07hitting Johnny Callison, who represents the tying
- 1:57:10run. So Singer might be tiring. And the Dodgers
- 1:57:14watching him carefully. 3 -1 pitch to Allen.
- 1:57:19On the hands, foul back as he tried to get out
- 1:57:22of the way of it. Richie was not swinging. It
- 1:57:24hit the bat and Haller out to talk to Singer.
- 1:57:26Pete Mickelson and Ray Lamb were down in the
- 1:57:33Dodger bullpen. 3 -2 to Rich. Haller behind the
- 1:57:48plate. Singer's 3 -2 pitch on the way. Ground
- 1:57:55ball to Will. Big hop. Morey stays with it. Throws
- 1:57:58him out. Big holding a second. Nice play by Will.
- 1:58:02That thing almost kangarooed over his head. He
- 1:58:05went down to get it, and suddenly he caught it
- 1:58:07off the bill of the hat. Here's Johnny Callison.
- 1:58:15Callison flied to center, grounded out, and tripled
- 1:58:18to left when his drive struck them. Box seat
- 1:58:21railing and Karam back towards left center field.
- 1:58:29Darren Johnson on deck. Pass ball high. Ball
- 1:58:33one. Looked like Singer was forcing himself a
- 1:58:35little bit on that pitch. As if he was trying
- 1:58:37to rear back and get a little extra. So he decides
- 1:58:40to take a breather for the moment. One and all
- 1:58:45to count. Singer looks at Briggs. Bill to the
- 1:58:53plate. Callison hits a high fly ball into center
- 1:58:56field. Davis fighting a glare. There's not a
- 1:58:58cloud up there, and he makes the catch for the
- 1:59:01out. No run to hit a man left, and it's all over
- 1:59:07as the Dodgers and Bill Singer beat Philadelphia
- 1:59:104 -1. We'll have the totals, the winning and
- 1:59:13losing pictures, right after this message. You
- 1:59:16know, ever since man crawled out of his cave,
- 1:59:18I guess he's been trying to forecast the future
- 1:59:20of medicine men and star -charged crystal balls
- 1:59:23and gypsy fortune tellers. A lot of people still
- 1:59:25use those methods, along with weather forecasts
- 1:59:27and space satellites, market predictions from
- 1:59:30computers, political forecasts from poll takers,
- 1:59:33and still, you just can't always tell what's
- 1:59:35coming up. A lot of times you get fooled. Ah,
- 1:59:37but take heart, though. I know one small, very
- 1:59:40comfortable pleasure you can predict every time.
- 1:59:43That's the comfortable taste of Burgermeister
- 1:59:45beer. You see that blue, white, and gold label?
- 1:59:47Pop off the cap, watch that sparkling amber blue
- 1:59:50fill a glass. It's clear, bright, and capped
- 1:59:53by a snow -white head. If it's Bergie, it's going
- 1:59:56to roll over your tongue so smooth, so cold and
- 1:59:58refreshing, the only word that really describes
- 2:00:00it is comfortable, comfortable beer. Even though
- 2:00:02we still have trouble forecasting the major events,
- 2:00:05when it comes to light, small pleasures, I want
- 2:00:07you to know exactly what's in store. So pick
- 2:00:10up some Bergie, and you'll never go wrong. Boogie's
- 2:00:13a comfortable kind of beer. Checking the scores
- 2:00:19for the Dodgers, four runs, seven hits, and no
- 2:00:21errors. The Phillies, one run, six hits, and
- 2:00:24no errors. Bill Singer all the way. He's now
- 2:00:2717 -8, 2 -1 with the Phillies, 4 -2 lifetime.
- 2:00:31Rick Wise, the loser, is 11 -11. The Dodgers
- 2:00:34have now concluded their year's work with the
- 2:00:37Phillies, and they won eight out of 12 from Philadelphia,
- 2:00:39four of the six. played here at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:00:42The Western Division of the National League is
- 2:00:45still very much up in the air. One of the big
- 2:00:48reasons being the Giants, the front -running
- 2:00:50ball club, still has a second game to go. But
- 2:00:53the best the Giants could do would be to win
- 2:00:56their second game and the Dodgers would then
- 2:00:58still pick up a half a game and be a half a game
- 2:01:00out. Cincinnati has already won their game. So
- 2:01:04technically... The Reds are tied with the Giants
- 2:01:07as of the moment, depending upon the outcome
- 2:01:09of the second game. So it is still a mess, and
- 2:01:11it's going to be a wild one right down to the
- 2:01:13wire for sure. Bill Singer will be our guest
- 2:01:17on the postgame show, and don't forget, those
- 2:01:19Mets will be in here tomorrow. Jerry Kuzman and
- 2:01:22Jim Bunnings will spend Labor Day with us, a
- 2:01:241 o 'clock ballgame, the Dodgers and the New
- 2:01:27York Mets, and we get underway on the air at
- 2:01:291240. Once again, the final score of the day,
- 2:01:31the Dodgers 4 and the Phillies 1. Now this is
- 2:01:35Ben Scully along with Jerry Doggett inviting
- 2:01:37you to stay tuned for the fourth game show coming
- 2:01:39right up.
