Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22I hope you guys liked that little surprise yesterday.
- 0:27No, for real, you guys have been so kind about Annabelle taking
- 0:31over Wednesdays. For me, that's just part of the
- 0:34plight of being a founder is trying to get out of like the
- 0:39day-to-day weeds so you can actually work on the bigger like
- 0:43strategy of the business, the business admin, managing your
- 0:47team, all of the things that are really important to like
- 0:50longevity, sustainability and growth.
- 0:52And that was something I really struggled with last year Is I
- 0:56just my work in terms of like the granular side of the
- 0:59business was just too much. So anyways, I convinced
- 1:04Annabelle after much time to join the pod and take over
- 1:11Wednesdays. So as she said, her episodes are
- 1:13going to be like tech and social media trends.
- 1:16Mine will remain culture creator news, that kind of stuff.
- 1:21So we'll see how it goes in terms of like that division.
- 1:24But that is kind of how we're keeping it for now.
- 1:26But thank you guys so much for being so sweet about her first
- 1:29episode. I'm sure you guys could tell,
- 1:31but she was obviously nervous. It's very nerve wracking to
- 1:34start a podcast. Like I remember when we first
- 1:37started the podcast back in 2020, I would be so anxious
- 1:41driving to the studio. I would be so nervous.
- 1:44And it just takes some time getting used to.
- 1:46And also doing a podcast by yourself is really nerve
- 1:49wracking. You don't have someone to kind
- 1:51of like save you or like bounce ideas off of.
- 1:54So if that's not something that you're used to, then yeah, it
- 1:57can be really challenging. But I think Annabelle did such a
- 2:00good job and I think you guys all agree.
- 2:02And I'm just so excited to see where all of this goes.
- 2:06So anyways, with that being said, let's just get into the
- 2:09stories for today. Oh, please rate, review and
- 2:11subscribe. We're trying to get to now 1000
- 2:13Spotify reviews. We're at 506, I think, so we
- 2:18have a ways to go. But yes, please review.
- 2:21Please star rate US on Spotify, leave us an Apple review if
- 2:23that's how you listen and follow me on Instagram at Lauren
- 2:27Meisner under score. The first word that I have for
- 2:29you guys is I needed to talk about how Michaela Naguera has
- 2:34been like worrying her fans with some of her recent posts about
- 2:38her mental health. So over the holidays, beauty
- 2:41guru Michaela Naguera posted several videos talking about how
- 2:442024 was the worst year of her life, and she was kind of
- 2:48keeping like a brave face for her audience, but nobody knew
- 2:52that behind the scenes she was falling apart.
- 2:54These videos have resonated so well with her audience that she
- 2:58actually keeps making them and referencing this time in her
- 3:01life how it's so difficult. And the feedback that she's
- 3:05getting is overwhelmingly supportive and positive.
- 3:08People are like, this is the most relatable that you have
- 3:10been in so long. This is so real.
- 3:13This is so raw. It feels like she's being honest
- 3:16for the first time in a long time.
- 3:18You know, she gets a lot of hate for like quote UN quote, like
- 3:20lying, allegedly lying about her reviews and things like that.
- 3:24I mean, I would say Michaela's, even though she has such a big
- 3:27audience and obviously she does have a lot of fans, but I would
- 3:30say that a huge part of her experience online is getting
- 3:34hate. Like I don't know if there is a
- 3:36Tik toker that I can think of off the top of my head.
- 3:38Like if you said to me, who is the biggest Tik toker that you
- 3:41can think of that is like consistently getting hate, Like
- 3:43I would probably say Michaela. Michaela hasn't opened up about
- 3:46like what happened. Obviously there's lots of
- 3:48speculation about maybe her marriage, maybe a fertility
- 3:51journey. That's all just hearsay as far
- 3:54as I know. One of the biggest, I would say,
- 3:57resounding theories aside from those things is that it has
- 4:00something to do with drama channel Rich Lux.
- 4:03So Rich Lux, he makes consistent content about Michaela, like
- 4:07negative content about Michaela. And I guess it really ramped up
- 4:11this year. I'm not sure.
- 4:12I don't follow him closely, but I guess it really ramped up this
- 4:15year. And I think he's also friends
- 4:17with Jeffrey Star maybe, which obviously we know Jeffrey Star
- 4:21has also been coming for Michaela a lot this year as
- 4:23well. So a lot of people think maybe
- 4:24it has something to do with Rich Lux and how he seemingly keeps
- 4:27coming after her. If you could refer to it as
- 4:30that, I think it would just be so difficult.
- 4:32So I don't know if that's what it is.
- 4:34Nobody seems to know. I don't know if she'll tell us.
- 4:36Maybe she will eventually. But for now, she's being a lot
- 4:39more open. And yes, some people do you
- 4:41think she's like leaning in because she's finally getting
- 4:43positive feedback. But other people are like, you
- 4:46know what? Maybe she's just like ready to
- 4:48be a little bit more real online.
- 4:50OK, the next story that I have for you guys is there is a Coors
- 4:54Light campaign that is going viral for a typo.
- 4:58And it's not really what you think.
- 5:00So a new Coors Light billboard in Times Square in New York City
- 5:04is going viral because there's a typo in the ad copy.
- 5:07And now LinkedIn pilled marketers are trying to have
- 5:10their own kind of viral like gotcha moment, thought leader
- 5:14moment, I suppose by pointing it out.
- 5:17So this was brought to my attention by the Denver based
- 5:20creator named Ashley who was behind the social account stuff
- 5:23about advertising. This billboard has a huge photo
- 5:27of a Coors like can with the slogan Mountain cold
- 5:30Refreshment. However, the ad copy switched
- 5:33the E and the R in refreshment, so it says refreshment.
- 5:37This is going off like wildfire, specifically on LinkedIn where
- 5:42marketers and agencies are writing these like giant posts,
- 5:46like essay like posts about the importance of copywriting,
- 5:49saying that Coors Light needs to issue a press release about this
- 5:53typo, telling their own stories about like their own typos that
- 5:56they made early on in their career, that kind of stuff
- 5:59stuff, right. So Ashley uncovered that when
- 6:03you go to the Coors Light Instagram account, they
- 6:06seemingly confirm that this typo was on purpose.
- 6:09So they have a post that says we had a case of the Mondays this
- 6:13morning. We released a series of ads in
- 6:15which we misspelled the word refreshment.
- 6:17Thanks everyone for letting us know about the errors Monday, am
- 6:21I right? Ashley notes that in this copy,
- 6:23the C in case of case of the Mondays is capitalized.
- 6:27So she's theorizing that this is a teaser for like, a Super Bowl
- 6:30campaign involving, you know, a case of beer, Coors Light, case
- 6:34of Coors Light after the Super Bowl on Monday.
- 6:37And basically her whole point in bringing attention to this is
- 6:40like, we need to have stronger discernment as professionals in
- 6:44the industry. She's like, these are, you know,
- 6:46like these are supposed to be, I guess, like her peers, right?
- 6:48Like marketers, advertisers, social media managers, people
- 6:52that work at agencies, copywriters.
- 6:54And they are looking at that. And instead of questioning like,
- 6:58oh, is that a clever tactic, they're trying to use this as
- 7:02their own moment to like further propel their career, right?
- 7:06Like to kind of have this like viral thought leadership moment.
- 7:09The chances of that running on a billboard on Times Square, like
- 7:13a typo like that running on a billboard in Times Square, which
- 7:16is so big and so expensive, is very low, right?
- 7:20So I'm interested to hear your thoughts on all of this because
- 7:24to me, I feel like this is just another example of something
- 7:27that I spoke about earlier this week, which is like, we're all
- 7:30just vying for our own viral gotcha moments, right?
- 7:33This is especially true in the corporate social media space.
- 7:37I'm not sure how like immersed in that any of you guys are, but
- 7:41I am quite immersed in that right now because I'm trying to
- 7:44do my I'm trying to do this myself.
- 7:45I'm trying to like post more like founder, business owner
- 7:48related content and it's cringe. OK, but like you have to do it
- 7:53unfortunately. But there is like there is like
- 7:56this pressure that I feel like, I don't know if it's just like
- 8:00self-imposed pressure or if it's like industry wide pressure
- 8:04where we feel like you have to put yourself out there as a
- 8:07personal brand in order to like build your business, climb the
- 8:11corporate ladder, build your career, whatever you're trying
- 8:13to do. And it's like everyone is trying
- 8:15to be a thought leader because it is easier than ever to become
- 8:19one one to post on LinkedIn consistently, to post on TikTok,
- 8:22like the kind of advantages of going viral on those platforms
- 8:27for like a quote, UN quote, like thought leadership moment.
- 8:29It is advantageous. Like they they are aplenty,
- 8:32right? And there's this pursuit of
- 8:34virality in the immediacy, which I think is where people go wrong
- 8:39here. I think if we were not all
- 8:41trying to have these viral gotcha moments, and I'm guilty
- 8:44of this too, but I think if we were not all trying to have
- 8:46these like gotcha moments, these thought leader moments where
- 8:49we're the first ones to get to it, then people might take
- 8:53pause. Look at it from a critical lens,
- 8:56especially if these are people who are in the advertising
- 8:59marketing industry. Like surely if you took just a
- 9:02little bit of time to think about this instead of going
- 9:05right to LinkedIn to write a post because you want to be one
- 9:07of the first ones to get something up about this, then
- 9:10surely you would be like, you know what?
- 9:12I know my industry well, I know how this works.
- 9:16Maybe this was on purpose, I don't know.
- 9:18I think for me, this story is more of a commentary on how
- 9:21social media has impacted corporate culture and like user
- 9:25behavior around corporate culture more so than it is a
- 9:29lesson in marketing in my opinion.
- 9:32But I'm interested to hear from you guys.
- 9:34I know we have a lot of marketers and people that work
- 9:36in social media and stuff that listen to this pod.
- 9:38OK, so Speaking of social media and how it has impacted
- 9:41corporate culture, I have some Australian influencer news for
- 9:45you guys that is related to this.
- 9:47So Chloe Berry Hang, who is a travel Instagram influencer
- 9:51turned corporate life Tik Toker, has gone viral on Australian
- 9:54TikTok after she revealed that she rejected hush money from the
- 9:57investment bank that she worked at in Sydney so she could speak
- 10:01about her negative workplace experience.
- 10:03I'm sure so many of you guys in Australia, especially Sydney,
- 10:07follow Chloe. She is like such a key follow.
- 10:10I feel like for the corporate girlies who are maybe like late
- 10:1520s, early 30s, but Chloe built her following on TikTok sharing
- 10:18what it's like to be like a quote UN quote corporate square.
- 10:21She calls it working in investment banking.
- 10:24Her videos were mostly, well, not mostly, but a lot of them.
- 10:28The corporate related videos were like outfits of the week,
- 10:31work day vlogs where she would be working like, I don't know,
- 10:3312-14 hour days. She was just really honest.
- 10:37I think about how unglamorous it is working in finance.
- 10:41Like obviously you're making lots of money and that's kind of
- 10:44the trade off. But her vlogs would be her for
- 10:46the most part, like getting to work and then just sitting at
- 10:50her desk at her computer typing for like 14 hours.
- 10:54And I actually think Chloe did what so many influencers try to
- 10:57do, which is she is incredibly relatable.
- 11:00Like she is, you know, a nine to well, not a nine to five, like a
- 11:04nine to 11 corporate girly. You know, I think she lives in a
- 11:09share house. Like she feels very relatable.
- 11:11The way she talks about work is very relatable and funny.
- 11:15She's not glamorizing it, like I said, at all.
- 11:17But then she also has this like streak of aspiration to her,
- 11:21which makes her such a compelling follow because she
- 11:24does make so much money. So you know, her clothes are
- 11:27beautiful and expensive. So it's like she has this
- 11:31perfect balance which I think has made her so successful.
- 11:35Oh, and she also has this rabbit called King Julian and people
- 11:38are obsessed with it. OK, so Chloe shocked her
- 11:42followers about a week ago when she shared that she had left her
- 11:45job. And like I said, that job felt
- 11:47so central to her content. She followed this up a few days
- 11:50later with a video explaining she had refused the quote hush
- 11:54money that she was offered by the company so she could open up
- 11:57online about what she experienced working at that
- 12:00company. She didn't name the company and
- 12:03I'm not going to name it here, I'm just scared.
- 12:06She detailed. That thing started to go
- 12:07downhill for her last year after an instant with a male colleague
- 12:11at a work dinner. She said he kept touching her
- 12:14hair and her shoulders and was putting his hand on her mouth
- 12:19like multiple times throughout the night to tell her to stop
- 12:22talking. Like I said, to tell her to shut
- 12:24up basically, she said there was a colleague who told the man to
- 12:28stop it at the dinner, like in the moment, but then like
- 12:32basically nothing further happened from that.
- 12:35So she said after that thing started to get progressively
- 12:38worse for her at the company. Quote, in a work environment,
- 12:41you already feel stupid because you're young and you're the only
- 12:44female there, you're the most junior, she said to the
- 12:46Australian Review. I would expect my team to stick
- 12:49up for me and expect my manager to speak to that person the next
- 12:52day. If I had accepted the money to
- 12:55stay silent, I would have felt like they still had control over
- 12:59me even after I had left the company.
- 13:02So this whole situation has resonated so much with women on
- 13:06TikTok. They've started posting their
- 13:08own stories of alleged inappropriate behavior and
- 13:11harassment in the workplace in solidarity with Chloe.
- 13:14And it's really shining a light, unfortunately, on how common
- 13:18this is for young women in the workplace.
- 13:21On one hand, it's heartwarming to see all these signs of
- 13:26solidarity and these women in Australia coming together on
- 13:29TikTok to share their stories about this and make other women
- 13:33feel like they're not alone. I imagine it's incredibly
- 13:36isolating with things like this happened to you at work and
- 13:38you're early in your career. However, it's also super sad.
- 13:43Like it is sad how common that is.
- 13:44So for the time being, just to wrap that up for you guys, if
- 13:48you don't know Chloe, you don't follow her.
- 13:50So she is going to take a break. She is sad for like a year or
- 13:52two from corporate life. She has a Robeware line that she
- 13:56just started that she's going to focus on.
- 13:58She's going to do her influencing stuff.
- 14:01She said she has strong feelings on being a full time influencer.
- 14:04That's like not the journey for her.
- 14:06But she did tell the Australian Financial Review that her Robe
- 14:10company is on track to hit $1 million in revenue in his first
- 14:14year, which is amazing. Also a final little tidbit for
- 14:17this episode is Brianna Chicken Fry.
- 14:20I didn't want to make this a main up main story, but Brianna
- 14:23chicken fry made like kind of a joke, I think about the Ken York
- 14:26situation on the tart trip. So she was doing like a Vox pop
- 14:29interview. Someone said something about
- 14:31like she was asked something about what the tart trip like is
- 14:34for. And she was like, it's for
- 14:36apologies, which as we know, Ken was like, maybe when I see
- 14:40Brianna on the trip, she'll apologize to me.
- 14:44And also Brianna is the digital cover star of Sports Illustrated
- 14:48that just came out today. So she is living her best life.
- 14:52Anyways guys, that's it for me. Scroll today.
- 14:54Thank you so much for listening. Thank you so much for being so
- 14:57supportive of our new Wednesday schedule of Annabelle hosting.
- 15:01I'm so excited to see how well she does.
- 15:03I know she's going to slay. She is literally the backbone of
- 15:06Centennial content. Like for real, I'm not even
- 15:09kidding. So I'm so excited that she is
- 15:12finally getting in front of the mic and you guys will get to
- 15:15know her and love her as much as we all do.
- 15:17So anyways guys, thank you so much for listening.
- 15:19Please rate, review and subscribe.
- 15:21Please follow me on Instagram. I love you guys and I will talk
- 15:23to you tomorrow. No, yes, no, I will.
- 15:25I will. There will be a deep dive
- 15:27tomorrow and then I'll talk to you Monday.
- 15:28OK, bye.
