- 0:00Speaker 1: A newly developed Star Drive spacecraft is headed from the
- 0:03Speaker 1: solar system toward Vega, 26 light years away. That journey
- 0:09Speaker 1: opens Space Patrol, Episode 96, The Galaxy Trade Association. First
- 0:15Speaker 1: broadcast on ABC on July 31st, 1954. Commander Buzz Corey
- 0:21Speaker 1: and Cadet Happy, played by Ed Kemmer and Lynn Osborne,
- 0:25Speaker 1: take the craft on its test flight and encounter the
- 0:27Speaker 1: Galaxy Trade Association, an interstellar commercial combine offering trade. As
- 0:33Speaker 1: Corey and Happy investigate the organization, the safety of their
- 0:37Speaker 1: ship and the location of the solar system are at stake.
- 0:42Speaker 1: From a story by Lou Houston, with Bella Kovach also
- 0:45Speaker 1: heard in the cast, here is the original broadcast.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Space patrol!
- 0:55Speaker 3: I adventure in a wild vast reaches of space, missions
- 0:58Speaker 3: of daring in the name of interplanetary justice.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Travel into the.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Future with Buzz Corey, commander-in-chief of the Space Patrol. Commander
- 1:11Speaker 3: Corey and Cadet Happy are making a series of tests
- 1:13Speaker 3: of the new.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Star Drive spaceship.
- 1:16Speaker 3: The Star Drive was designed by a space traveler from
- 1:18Speaker 3: another planetary system, and its principles are.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Not thoroughly understood. At present, only Buzz.
- 1:24Speaker 4: And Happy can operate the amazing.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Craft that puts the most distant stars within reach of
- 1:29Speaker 3: explorers from the solar system.
- 1:31Speaker 2: After they thoroughly.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Master the Star Drive and the technique of astrogation through hyperspace.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Commander Corey will train other.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Space patrol pilots for expeditions into interstellar space. At this moment,
- 1:42Speaker 3: Buzz and Happy are in Star Drive bound for Vega,
- 1:45Speaker 3: a star 26 light years from the sun.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we're coming out of Star Drive already. Wonder how
- 1:52Speaker 2: long we'll black out this time.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Well.
- 2:09Speaker 3: That time I didn't black out completely.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Just got a little dizzy.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Evidently, we're getting used to the pull in and pull
- 2:13Speaker 3: out of the star drive.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Hey, come in here.
- 2:15Speaker 4: That must be Vegas.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Wow, that white hot light. Check the instruments, Hap. Let's
- 2:19Speaker 3: get a reading. Yes, sir.
- 2:22Speaker 2: The star is six million DUs distant, sir. And the
- 2:24Speaker 2: radiation intensity scale reading is 9.1.
- 2:26Speaker 3: That's exactly what Vegas should be at that distance.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Smoke a rocket. Look at that.
- 2:31Speaker 3: A spaceship off a starboard.
- 2:33Speaker 2: It's either awfully close or it's a monster.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Get a bioscope reading on it, Hap. The size, distance,
- 2:38Speaker 3: and vector.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 2:38Speaker 3: And if you can, find out if they're carrying armament. Yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 3: that's right.
- 2:41Speaker 2: We're in a strange solar system.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Maybe these people don't like visitors.
- 2:44Speaker 2: They're on a parallel vector, sir. And matching our velocity.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Just looking us over.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It's a big ship, all right. Five times the size
- 2:52Speaker 3: of this one.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Hey, look. They're flashing a light. Now watch closely.
- 2:55Speaker 3: See if you can detect a pattern.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Three flashes. Three flashes. Three flashes.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And another three flashes.
- 3:02Speaker 2: That must be a code of some kind.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I'll send the flashes exactly as they did. Three groups
- 3:06Speaker 3: of three.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Three. Three. And three.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Let's see what the next move is.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Uh-oh. They're really signaling now. Flashes all over the place.
- 3:19Speaker 3: They're closing in, huh?
- 3:21Speaker 2: It would feel a lot easier if we had some
- 3:23Speaker 2: space weapons. Right now, that ship is so close, we
- 3:25Speaker 2: could blast it. Oh, what's wrong with our rockets? They've
- 3:29Speaker 2: cut out.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And our lights are dimming.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Something must be wrong with the main power supply.
- 3:33Speaker 3: The auxiliary should cut in automatically, Hap. That other ship
- 3:35Speaker 3: is causing the trouble.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, even if we had space torpedoes, we couldn't fire them.
- 3:39Speaker 2: If only that's the idea, Hap.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Those boys from Vega aren't taking any chances. Say, look now, sir.
- 3:44Speaker 2: A hatch is sliding open. Something is being thrust out.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's a platform or a ramp of some kind. Something's moving.
- 3:53Speaker 4: It's a man in a space suit.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Walking out on the ramp with both arms held out.
- 3:57Speaker 3: A universal gesture. Showing us he isn't armed.
- 4:02Speaker 2: What's he doing out there?
- 4:03Speaker 3: He said he wants to come aboard. You gonna let him?
- 4:07Speaker 3: Right now, they're calling the plane's app.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Press the outer hatch control.
- 4:09Speaker 3: When a ship pulls closer, he can step into our airlock.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 4:13Speaker 3: He may be unarmed, but there's something hanging from the
- 4:15Speaker 3: belt of his space suit.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Some sort of a box.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Maybe a space phone or a weapon. You'll find out
- 4:20Speaker 3: very soon. Open the hatch.
- 4:21Speaker 2: We're going to have company. The huge spaceship.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Maneuvers alongside the Star Drive craft, and a moment later,
- 4:29Speaker 3: a light flashing on the control panel tells Buzz and
- 4:33Speaker 3: Happy that their visitor.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Is in the airlock. Buzz presses a button, and the
- 4:37Speaker 2: outer hatch closes.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Then, at a nod from the commander, Happy opens the
- 4:41Speaker 3: inner hatch. And in strides a figure in a spacesuit.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Commander, what does he want? I think he wants us
- 4:49Speaker 2: to talk. I seem sort of pleased about the whole
- 4:54Speaker 2: thing anyway.
- 4:55Speaker 3: If only that box is some sort of instrument that's
- 4:57Speaker 3: picking up what we're saying.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he understands us.
- 5:00Speaker 3: He's nodding his head. Let's identify ourselves, Pap, and use gestures.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Maybe it'll help. I am Buzz Corey.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I am Cadet Happy. Buzz, Cory, Cadet Happy.
- 5:13Speaker 3: That's the idea.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Thank you. I think now we can dispense with justice.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I am Erdo, Assistant Deputy Field Agent for the Galaxy
- 5:22Speaker 2: Trade Association. Wow, we sure got on to our language fast.
- 5:25Speaker 2: That is why I hold my high position with the association.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Of course, this device here helps considerably. It is sensitive
- 5:32Speaker 2: to brain waves and translates thought images into symbols of
- 5:35Speaker 2: your language.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Electronic translator. Yes.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I've made contacts with 20 different planetary systems in the galaxy.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And neither the translator or I have failed yet. I
- 5:45Speaker 2: suppose you want to know.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Why we're in the Vegas system. Or do you already
- 5:49Speaker 3: know that?
- 5:50Speaker 2: I know that, like myself, you're on a peaceful mission.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And you seem to be slightly lost. You're from another
- 5:56Speaker 2: part of the galaxy, aren't you?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And you've never had any dealings with the Galaxy Trade Association?
- 6:02Speaker 3: Never heard of it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Well, it's lucky we chanced to meet. I can let
- 6:07Speaker 2: you in on a very profitable arrangement.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Oh, just a minute.
- 6:10Speaker 2: After we sighted you, our rocket power cut off and
- 6:12Speaker 2: our lights dimmed. Oh, yes. It was a necessary precaution
- 6:16Speaker 2: on our part. We couldn't identify you and you didn't
- 6:19Speaker 2: know our code, so Crexar ordered the inhibitor beam to
- 6:22Speaker 2: be focused on you. As you may have noticed, some
- 6:25Speaker 2: of your controls have already been restored to use. Who
- 6:28Speaker 2: is Crexar? The deputy field agent for the Galaxy Association.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I'm his assistant. Crexar is captain of our ship, the Chaka.
- 6:37Speaker 3: And you're from one of the planets in the Vega system?
- 6:39Speaker 2: Oh, no. We're from Chaka, a star a hundred light
- 6:43Speaker 2: years from here. Vega has five planets, and they're all
- 6:47Speaker 2: members of the association. There's no reason why your solar
- 6:50Speaker 2: system shouldn't join up, too. Just come aboard the Chaka,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and Crexar will throw out the contract.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Oh, not so fast, or do in the first place.
- 6:59Speaker 3: What's the purpose of the association?
- 7:01Speaker 2: Why, to promote interstellar trade. Exchange of commodities, food, raw materials,
- 7:06Speaker 2: and industrial products. All your planets do is follow the quota.
- 7:11Speaker 2: We deliver materials from other planets and pick up the
- 7:13Speaker 2: goods for export. Sounds fine, except for one thing.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Who determines the quota?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Well, it's worked out on an efficient basis.
- 7:22Speaker 3: By the numbers?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Or just by chocker? Corley, listen. If you tell Crexor
- 7:28Speaker 2: where to find your solar system by after the deal
- 7:30Speaker 2: is set up, you'll get a share of the profits.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Get off this ship before I throw you off and
- 7:36Speaker 3: tell Krexler to take his association and ram it into
- 7:38Speaker 3: the hottest star in the galaxy.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I couldn't tell that to Krexler. You dare to defy
- 7:46Speaker 2: the association?
- 7:47Speaker 3: You bet I do.
- 7:49Speaker 2: If only my planet had been courageous enough to defy them.
- 7:53Speaker 2: The association has made America a slave planet. Yeah? Then
- 7:59Speaker 2: why do you work for that outfit and try to
- 8:01Speaker 2: get others to join? I had to. Chaka controls everything.
- 8:06Speaker 2: We'll either work for the association or starve. Hey, Commander,
- 8:10Speaker 2: Krexer's blinking up a storm.
- 8:12Speaker 3: What am I going to do?
- 8:13Speaker 2: I can't go back now after what I've told you.
- 8:15Speaker 2: How about that inhibitor beam?
- 8:16Speaker 3: Is it still on?
- 8:17Speaker 2: No. No, and he figured it was safe. Krexer would
- 8:20Speaker 2: cut it off, save power.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I'm going to blast away from here. What's the range
- 8:24Speaker 3: of that beam?
- 8:25Speaker 2: If you pull away fast, you can take Krexer off guard.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Okay, happy fire, Rocket.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Got to have a destination to get into Star Drive.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Where's this home planet of yours, this America?
- 8:42Speaker 2: It's in the Radnitz solar system. Fifteen light years from Baker.
- 8:46Speaker 3: In what direction? Come on, take a look through the
- 8:48Speaker 3: nose port. Can you point it out?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Let me see.
- 8:52Speaker 3: That's Antares.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Tractor's gaining. There's Radnitz, just under Antares. About ten degrees right.
- 8:59Speaker 3: We're having time for a fine adjustment at the hyperspace computer.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Fifteen light years, Erdo? Yes, Corey.
- 9:04Speaker 3: We're going into Star Drive. The sudden switch in the
- 9:22Speaker 3: star drive from comparatively low velocity blacks out Buzz and
- 9:25Speaker 3: Happy completely. When they regain their senses, the light of
- 9:28Speaker 3: a yellow sun is blazing.
- 9:30Speaker 2: In through the nose port.
- 9:31Speaker 3: As they check their instruments.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Urdu calls out excitedly.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It's Radcliffe. We made it.
- 9:36Speaker 3: We made it. Okay, now which one of these planets
- 9:38Speaker 3: is Amirka? That one.
- 9:40Speaker 2: All right, Urdu.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Nothing else to do with you but drop you off
- 9:42Speaker 3: on Amirka. That will be our way from the city.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Excellent time. You can land at my brother's farm. You
- 9:49Speaker 2: won't be molested. We have no spaceship since Charky imposed
- 9:52Speaker 2: its quota on our planet. But one more thing, R2.
- 9:54Speaker 3: We didn't have time to calculate the hyperspace vectors accurately. Plus,
- 9:59Speaker 3: this is an uncharted section of the galaxy. Unless we
- 10:01Speaker 3: can feed accurate data into our star drive computer, we're lost.
- 10:04Speaker 2: I can give you some astrogation charts after we land.
- 10:08Speaker 2: My father wanted to be a space pilot until the
- 10:10Speaker 2: association forced him into operating a farm. And this is
- 10:13Speaker 2: the kind of an outfit you tried to get us
- 10:15Speaker 2: to join? I... I had no choice, can't you understand?
- 10:18Speaker 4: Never mind that, Urdu.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Help me get this ship into America.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Following Urdu's instructions, the commander lands the spaceship on a
- 10:28Speaker 4: plowed field near a crude farmhouse several miles from the
- 10:31Speaker 4: nearest city of.
- 10:32Speaker 2: The planet America.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Boss and Happy are waiting in the ship for Erdo
- 10:35Speaker 3: to return with the promised astrogation charts looking through the
- 10:39Speaker 3: open hatch toward the ramshackle building.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Hey, there's Erdo. He's motioning to us. What's the matter?
- 10:44Speaker 3: Can he find those charts?
- 10:45Speaker 2: Oh, come on, App.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Let's see what he wants. What's the trouble, Erdo?
- 10:56Speaker 2: Where are the charts? There's been a slight change in plans, Corey.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Oh, there has.
- 11:00Speaker 2: For you, maybe, but not for us. Don't make a move,
- 11:02Speaker 2: either of you. This is quite a powerful weapon.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Hey, what's the big idea of pulling a gun on us?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Of all the ungrateful.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Gratitude is a luxury I can't afford. Not till I
- 11:11Speaker 2: am free from the power of Chaka. Not till the
- 11:14Speaker 2: people of America drive out the Association.
- 11:16Speaker 3: What's that got to do with us?
- 11:17Speaker 2: We can use your ship and your knowledge.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Don't move.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I'll show you what this gun can do. See that
- 11:24Speaker 2: tree over there? Watch what happens.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Wow.
- 11:33Speaker 2: If it can do that to a tree, think what
- 11:35Speaker 2: it could do to a man. Now, both of you,
- 11:38Speaker 2: inside the house. Make one false move and you're finished.
- 11:54Speaker 3: While Buzz and Happy were exploring space near the star Vega,
- 11:57Speaker 3: their star drive ship was halted by a strange craft.
- 12:00Speaker 4: They were boarded by a man.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Named Erdo, who told them of an interstellar organization called
- 12:05Speaker 3: the Galaxy Trade Association, and urged the commander to bring
- 12:08Speaker 3: the United Planets into the agreement. When Buzz refused to
- 12:11Speaker 3: consider the proposition, Erdo broke down and admitted that the
- 12:14Speaker 3: commander's suspicions were correct, that the association was a ruthless combine,
- 12:19Speaker 3: bent upon enslaving the inhabitants of all planets.
- 12:21Speaker 2: In the galaxy.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Blasting away from the other ship, Buzz and Happy returned
- 12:25Speaker 3: Erdo to his home planet, America, in.
- 12:27Speaker 4: The Radmos star system.
- 12:28Speaker 3: After tricking them into leaving their ship, Erdo produced a
- 12:31Speaker 3: powerful weapon and forced the space patrollers to a farmhouse.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Where they're being held at gunpoint.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Now look, Erdo, face facts for a minute. How do
- 12:39Speaker 2: you expect to drive off the Charka outfit with one spaceship?
- 12:42Speaker 2: With one spaceship, we can capture another. Then with two,
- 12:45Speaker 2: we can capture two more.
- 12:47Speaker 3: With four, our ship isn't armed.
- 12:49Speaker 2: I know. But the factory's here on America. Manufacture armaments
- 12:53Speaker 2: for the Charka ships.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Great. With the Association keeping close tab on your production,
- 12:56Speaker 3: how are you going to get the weapons out of
- 12:57Speaker 3: the factories?
- 12:58Speaker 2: The Association's spies can't watch all of us all the time.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Bit by bit, piece by piece, we can smuggle parts
- 13:05Speaker 2: out of the plant. A while ago, you told us
- 13:07Speaker 2: that the people of America have no spaceships of their own.
- 13:10Speaker 2: The minute a Charka cruiser sees our ship, they're going
- 13:12Speaker 2: to ask questions. My brother will know what to do.
- 13:15Speaker 2: For years he has been waiting and hoping for such
- 13:17Speaker 2: an opportunity.
- 13:18Speaker 3: While you've been helping the Charka gang rope in more victims,
- 13:21Speaker 3: more slaves?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yes, and learning how the Charkans operate. Now I can
- 13:26Speaker 2: turn that knowledge against our oppressors. Hey, what's that noise?
- 13:29Speaker 2: It's my brother. His truck is coming down the road.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Erdo, but here's where we leave you. Let
- 13:35Speaker 2: go of that gun! Hey, that was fast work there.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Run for the ship, quick. Here comes the truck, sir.
- 13:46Speaker 2: But it's stopping. Urdu's brother probably thinks we're from Charka.
- 13:48Speaker 2: He won't try to stop us. Stop them, Barbara. Stop them.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Commander, it's Urdu. Got his gun, but his brother may
- 13:55Speaker 3: have one.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Up the ladder, Hap.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I doubt that they damaged the ship to stop us,
- 14:04Speaker 3: even if they've got another weapon.
- 14:05Speaker 2: It won't take any chances. Close port. Yes, sir. Port's closed, sir.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Fire rockets.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Up, ship, and away. Well, we're clear of America, Commander.
- 14:29Speaker 2: But we didn't get our astrogation chart.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Rather than take the time to orient ourselves to this
- 14:32Speaker 3: part of the galaxy, we'll return to Vega. It'll be
- 14:34Speaker 3: easy to reset the star guide vector for the solar
- 14:36Speaker 3: system from there.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Isn't that Vega, the bright star over there?
- 14:40Speaker 3: Yes, Hap, that's it. Watch the vector computer. As soon
- 14:43Speaker 3: as we reach a safe velocity, we'll go in the
- 14:45Speaker 3: star drive. A few moments later, Buzz cuts in the
- 14:52Speaker 3: star drive. Then comes the now familiar silent journey through
- 14:55Speaker 3: the black nothingness of hyperspace and the return to conventional
- 14:58Speaker 3: rocket drive. Right now, in the region of the star Vega,
- 15:02Speaker 3: Buzz and Happy focus instruments on.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Three distant stars.
- 15:06Speaker 3: The data is fed into the computer, which plots the
- 15:09Speaker 3: complex hyperspace vector for their return to the solar system
- 15:12Speaker 3: 26 light years away.
- 15:14Speaker 1: All set, Hap?
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Here we go back into the star drive. And when
- 15:17Speaker 3: we get back home, we can mark Vega down in
- 15:19Speaker 3: the charts as a place to avoid from now on.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Uh-oh, what's the matter? Star drive won't take hold. The
- 15:25Speaker 2: lights are dimming. Smoke and rockets, Commander, we're sunk. It's
- 15:28Speaker 2: that ship again.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Yes.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Caught us with the inhibitor beam.
- 15:32Speaker 2: All the rotten luck.
- 15:33Speaker 3: We had to pop out of hyperspace right near Krexler's ship.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Probably after Erdo. Yeah, he's either got to let us
- 15:40Speaker 3: alone or blast us apart.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Oh, I think sure he can't get aboard unless... Commander,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I feel drowsy.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Something's wrong.
- 15:49Speaker 2: There, in the ship. Everything's getting blurred. That's quick.
- 15:58Speaker 3: We've got to... Lock the hatch controls.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I'll get it, sir.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Silently, the Star Drive ship hurtles through space in free
- 16:16Speaker 3: fall near Vega as a huge spacecraft draws closer. When
- 16:20Speaker 3: Buzz and Happy regain consciousness, they look up to see
- 16:23Speaker 3: a figure in a spacesuit standing over them. Fastened to
- 16:26Speaker 3: his belt is a small black box. As the commander
- 16:29Speaker 3: gets to his feet, the man in the space suit
- 16:31Speaker 3: raises a weapon.
- 16:34Speaker 2: You will regret any rash move. Stay where you are.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Who are you, another salesman for the Galaxy Association?
- 16:40Speaker 2: I am Cracksewer, deputy field agent. What happened?
- 16:43Speaker 3: Who.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Uh-oh. You will be all right in a moment. You
- 16:47Speaker 2: were both overcome by mildly poisoned air. Poisoned air? How
- 16:51Speaker 2: did it get in the ship? I focused a beam
- 16:53Speaker 2: of certain cosmic rays on your hull. They penetrated the
- 16:56Speaker 2: hull and ionized the air molecules. The effect is only temporary.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Why don't you completely clear the atmosphere by getting out
- 17:03Speaker 2: of here? Come now. This is no way to talk
- 17:06Speaker 2: to your future business associate. We've talked to your assistant.
- 17:09Speaker 3: We're not interested in your type of business, Quicksilver.
- 17:12Speaker 2: By the way, where is Urdu? I know he's not
- 17:14Speaker 2: aboard your ship. I looked. Where is he? He resigned
- 17:18Speaker 2: from the Association. No one resigned from the Galaxy Association. Oh,
- 17:23Speaker 2: I assume he persuaded you to take him back to
- 17:26Speaker 2: that wretched planet of his. What a fool he is.
- 17:30Speaker 2: And he had such a fine future with the Association.
- 17:33Speaker 2: But enough of Verdu. What part of the galaxy are
- 17:36Speaker 2: you from? From the free part.
- 17:38Speaker 3: And it's going to stay that way.
- 17:40Speaker 2: It will be to your personal advantage to help me
- 17:42Speaker 2: locate your solar system. It will also benefit your planet
- 17:46Speaker 2: to join the Association.
- 17:47Speaker 3: We've already seen some of the benefits, Krexler.
- 17:49Speaker 2: No thanks. Aboard my ship, the Charka, I have some
- 17:52Speaker 2: very persuasive arguments. I assume you have spacesuits aboard. You
- 17:58Speaker 2: had better get into them. You will find it most
- 18:00Speaker 2: uncomfortable without them when I open the airlock.
- 18:03Speaker 3: All right, Krexler.
- 18:04Speaker 2: We'll come aboard.
- 18:05Speaker 3: But you won't make us talk.
- 18:07Speaker 2: We shall see. Get your spacesuits, quickly.
- 18:13Speaker 3: With Krexler holding his weapon ready, Buzz and Happy don
- 18:16Speaker 3: spacesuits and walk across the ramp into the charter. Krexler
- 18:19Speaker 3: forces them down a corridor and into a compartment filled
- 18:22Speaker 3: with instruments and equipment of strange design. Krexler gestures that
- 18:26Speaker 3: they're to raise their helmet-faced pieces. This is a good-sized ship, Krexler.
- 18:30Speaker 3: How many men do you have aboard?
- 18:32Speaker 2: That is information divorced only to association members. There are
- 18:37Speaker 2: more than enough, however, to handle you two in the
- 18:39Speaker 2: event you try to escape.
- 18:41Speaker 3: This equipment, does it work?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Or is it just to impress your clients?
- 18:45Speaker 2: It all has a use. The device there, for example,
- 18:49Speaker 2: will enable me to learn the location of your solar system.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Once the electrodes are placed on your head, any knowledge
- 18:56Speaker 2: you possess will appear upon the screen.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Well, it's like our brain. Correct, sir.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Just how gullible do you think we are? Why, you've
- 19:04Speaker 2: already seen our translator. If it hadn't been able to
- 19:07Speaker 2: detect your brain waves, we wouldn't be communicating now. This
- 19:11Speaker 2: device is more powerful. It penetrates into the unconscious.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Nonsense.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Nonsense, is it? All right, then. If you think this
- 19:19Speaker 2: machine is a fraud, you might as well prove it
- 19:22Speaker 2: by letting me test it on you.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Oh, it'll work all right, but not the way you
- 19:25Speaker 3: say it will. It's some torture device.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Torture device? Of course.
- 19:29Speaker 3: When you attach those electrodes to us, you'll turn on
- 19:31Speaker 3: a current and keep increasing it until we either talk
- 19:33Speaker 3: or pass out.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So you think the device is a torture machine, do you?
- 19:38Speaker 3: Yes, and you can't prove it isn't.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Not to my satisfaction. I can prove it. That is,
- 19:44Speaker 2: if you're not a complete idiot. Suppose I attach the
- 19:47Speaker 2: electrodes to my own head and let you turn around.
- 19:50Speaker 2: on any controls you want. Will that convince you?
- 19:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 19:55Speaker 4: You mean we can adjust the controls?
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Now, I got the electrodes pressed to my temples.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Go to work.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Personally, I think you're bluffing, but we'll see. Uh, how
- 20:09Speaker 3: do you turn it on?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Just pull down that red lever on the far left
- 20:12Speaker 2: of the panel. There.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Feel anything?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Of course not. Now go on, make your test. The
- 20:21Speaker 2: machine is foolproof, fortunately. I'll hold him half. You watch
- 20:27Speaker 2: the brainograph screen. All right. Let go. Okay, Krexler. What
- 20:30Speaker 2: do we do to keep your men out of the
- 20:31Speaker 2: corridor and away from the airlock? You fool. Do you
- 20:34Speaker 2: think I'd tell you that?
- 20:35Speaker 3: No, but you're thinking it. It's on the screen.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Commander, there's an image of one of the panels here,
- 20:40Speaker 2: and a button is pressed four times. Which button? Think
- 20:43Speaker 2: of it, Krexler.
- 20:45Speaker 3: No, I won't.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I've got it, sir.
- 20:47Speaker 3: I know which one it is.
- 20:48Speaker 2: What happens if that button's pressed four times, Cracker?
- 20:51Speaker 3: What do you see happen?
- 20:52Speaker 2: He's trying to cloud the screen with other thoughts, but
- 20:55Speaker 2: I see a whole bunch of men lining up in formation.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It's a great big compartment. Must be a midship somewhere. Good.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Probably general inspection. Press that button, Cap, four times. That'll
- 21:04Speaker 3: pull the men away from the escape hatch in the
- 21:05Speaker 3: outer corridor.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Don't press that button! Relax, Cracker. There's an
- 21:14Speaker 2: alarm sounding, sir, all over the ship. All right, Cracker.
- 21:17Speaker 2: While the crew lines up for inspection, I've got one
- 21:19Speaker 2: more question. If you were our prisoner aboard this ship
- 21:22Speaker 2: and you wanted to escape.
- 21:23Speaker 3: What would you do? Just on the screen, Happy. An
- 21:27Speaker 3: image of Cracker knocking us out and running out this door,
- 21:30Speaker 3: down an empty compartment to the hatch.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Across the ramp, and into our ship.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Thanks, Cracker.
- 21:34Speaker 2: I'm finally convinced your device does read subconscious thoughts after all.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Now, your suggestion for escape seems a little rough, but
- 21:40Speaker 3: after all, it was your own idea.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Yes. Wow, Commander, you should have seen the stars on
- 21:45Speaker 2: that brainograph screen when you socked Krexer.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Come on, Hap.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I'll take Krexer's gun just in case. Let's hope that
- 21:50Speaker 2: corridor's empty.
- 21:56Speaker 3: No one's in the corridor, sir. It's clear all the
- 22:01Speaker 3: way down to the hatch.
- 22:02Speaker 2: I guess everybody's lining up for inspection. Nothing like a
- 22:05Speaker 2: well-disciplined ship.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Secure your helmet, Hap. Try to open the hatch. Boarding
- 22:12Speaker 3: their ship, Buzz and Happy quickly blast off, anxiously watching
- 22:15Speaker 3: the diminishing image of Krexor's.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Craft in their rear viewscope.
- 22:19Speaker 3: As their acceleration increases, Buzz idly monitors the space of
- 22:22Speaker 3: one receiver.
- 22:24Speaker 4: It doesn't look as though they're coming after us yet, sir.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I guess Krexor's still out cold.
- 22:28Speaker 2: They'll be spayed that way until we're into star drive.
- 22:30Speaker 4: We're pretty nearly up to velocity now, sir.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Say, what do you expect to pick up on the
- 22:35Speaker 2: space opponents?
- 22:35Speaker 3: We're checking to see what frequency they use. Naturally, we
- 22:38Speaker 3: couldn't understand.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Galaxy Trade Association field ship chartered to headquarters. Field deputy
- 22:43Speaker 5: Craxor here with 1201 report.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Craxor?
- 22:46Speaker 3: But how come he's space opponent in English? Strange. Wait.
- 22:50Speaker 3: What's that lying on the desk at your feet? A
- 22:52Speaker 3: transmitter box.
- 22:53Speaker 2: In the excitement, I must have grabbed a few.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Usually, drills have been conducted as per schedule, including extra
- 22:58Speaker 5: general inspection on deck five of the ship, True deportment
- 23:02Speaker 5: and morale excellent.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Why that big fake?
- 23:04Speaker 5: In reference to message 0562 broadcast earlier concerning the spaceship
- 23:09Speaker 5: from an unknown origin, I have now completed interrogation of
- 23:12Speaker 5: its occupants and have ordered them to depart.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Is he talking about us?
- 23:16Speaker 5: In my expert opinion, further contact with that solar system
- 23:20Speaker 5: would not be to the best of interest of the
- 23:22Speaker 5: Galaxy Trade Association. Deputy Field Agent Krexler out.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Well, I'd imagine they don't want to trade with us.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Well, I don't see why not.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Didn't we prove that we could give them the business?
