- 0:00Speaker 1: And he answered and said, Whether he be a sinner
- 0:03Speaker 1: or no, I know not. One thing I know, that
- 0:08Speaker 1: whereas I was blind, now I see. John 9.25 Jesus,
- 0:16Speaker 1: as you move in my life, I understand that there
- 0:20Speaker 1: are people who are bent on trying to hold me
- 0:23Speaker 1: to my past condition. However, because it is you who
- 0:27Speaker 1: has healed me and transformed me, I will stand boldly
- 0:32Speaker 1: and proclaim your truth, even if it means I may
- 0:36Speaker 1: be thrown out of certain circles and relationships. I declare
- 0:41Speaker 1: that you came so that the blind can see and
- 0:44Speaker 1: receive new life, so that those who are focused on
- 0:49Speaker 1: traditions will be silenced because you value faith and a
- 0:54Speaker 1: humble and contrite heart before pride and ego. Thank you
- 1:00Speaker 1: for opening my eyes, Jesus. Thank you for taking the
- 1:03Speaker 1: time to sit and talk with me when I felt
- 1:07Speaker 1: so thrown out and abandoned by those close to me.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Through your power, Jesus, I now walk with a new
- 1:16Speaker 1: vision and a new outlook on life. I once was blind,
- 1:24Speaker 1: but now I see, and I have you to thank
- 1:28Speaker 1: for it, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. Listening to these
- 1:36Speaker 1: daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God. Continue hearing from

- 1:57Speaker 2: Blind at Birth In our last story, Jesus defended a
- 2:03Speaker 2: woman caught in adultery from being stoned to death. She
- 2:08Speaker 2: was drug out into the public half-naked for all to
- 2:10Speaker 2: shame her. Yet Jesus stood up to the religious leaders
- 2:14Speaker 2: and proclaimed that whoever was without sin could throw the
- 2:17Speaker 2: first stone. Since none of them had a rebuttal for Jesus,
- 2:21Speaker 2: they left, and the woman was forgiven. Now we see
- 2:24Speaker 2: Jesus exposing the wicked hearts of the religious elite by
- 2:28Speaker 2: giving sight to a blind man. This young man would
- 2:31Speaker 2: be caught in the crossfires of the legalistic Pharisees and
- 2:34Speaker 2: the compassionate Christ, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:45Speaker 3: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want
- 2:48Speaker 3: to let you know about a unique e-book that's yours
- 2:51Speaker 3: to download absolutely free today. It's called Breaking Free from Stress.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And my prayer is that it will help you conquer
- 2:59Speaker 3: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 3:03Speaker 3: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 3:06Speaker 3: from Stress today by visiting jackgram.org slash stress. That's jackgram.org
- 3:13Speaker 3: slash stress. In our previous episode, we heard how Jesus
- 3:18Speaker 3: frustrated the plans of religious leaders who wanted to trap
- 3:21Speaker 3: him with a choice to either follow the law of
- 3:24Speaker 3: the letter of the law or simply ignore what was
- 3:27Speaker 3: written in the law of Moses. Instead of playing their game,
- 3:30Speaker 3: he challenged them to evaluate their own sinfulness and he
- 3:34Speaker 3: exposed their sin and then extended grace and forgiveness to
- 3:38Speaker 3: a woman caught in the act of adultery. Today we'll
- 3:42Speaker 3: hear how Jesus lovingly corrects the misconceptions of the disciples
- 3:46Speaker 3: who seek to understand why a young man was born blind.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And we'll see once again how the legalists attempt to
- 3:52Speaker 3: trap Jesus. But in doing so, they expose their own
- 3:56Speaker 3: heartlessness and lack of love and compassion for people in need.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the reading of God's Word.
- 4:05Speaker 2: The town of Capernaum was bustling with life. VENDORS SET
- 4:09Speaker 2: UP THEIR SHOPS IN THE MARKETPLACE STREETS. MEN AND WOMEN
- 4:12Speaker 2: WENT TO AND FROM THEIR HOMES WITH THEIR CHILDREN. JESUS
- 4:15Speaker 2: LOOKED AT THEM WITH FATHERLY AFFECTION. THOUGH NOT ALL OF
- 4:19Speaker 2: THEM KNEW HIM, HE KNEW ALL OF THEM BY NAME.
- 4:22Speaker 2: HE KNEW THEIR FEARS, DREAMS AND PERSONALITIES. IT WAS HIS
- 4:26Speaker 2: ABSOLUTE JOY TO SERVE THEM AND ULTIMATELY DIE FOR THEM.
- 4:31Speaker 2: AS JESUS AND HIS DISCIPLES WERE PASSING THROUGH THE STREETS,
- 4:33Speaker 2: THEY PASSED BY A MAN WHO HAD BEEN BLIND FROM BIRTH.
- 4:37Speaker 2: He sat on a blanket on the side of the road,
- 4:39Speaker 2: holding out his hands for any form of kindness from strangers.
- 4:43Speaker 2: The disciples looked at the man with concern. Teacher, who
- 4:47Speaker 2: sinned to make this man born blind? Was it him
- 4:51Speaker 2: or his parents? Jesus stopped walking and turned to them.
- 4:55Speaker 2: He was upset at their question, for it revealed a
- 4:58Speaker 2: poor understanding of God's character. Neither he or his parents
- 5:02Speaker 2: have done anything wrong, Jesus answered. He turned to the
- 5:06Speaker 2: blind man and knelt down to him.' This man is
- 5:09Speaker 2: blind so that God's compassion might be displayed,' he said.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Jesus picked up some dirt beside the man and spat
- 5:16Speaker 2: in it. He began to form clay out of the
- 5:18Speaker 2: spit and dust. As he was doing this, he spoke
- 5:21Speaker 2: to the disciples.' Night is coming. In that time, nobody
- 5:26Speaker 2: will be able to do the will of God, but
- 5:28Speaker 2: for now it is day, and we must use that
- 5:30Speaker 2: time to help others.' As long as I am in
- 5:33Speaker 2: the world, I will be a light for all. Jesus
- 5:37Speaker 2: finished molding the clay in his hands. He took it
- 5:40Speaker 2: and spread it across the man's eyes. Jesus helped the
- 5:43Speaker 2: man to his feet and whispered, Go and wash your
- 5:46Speaker 2: eyes at the pool of Siloam. So the man went
- 5:48Speaker 2: a few yards east and began washing the mud out
- 5:51Speaker 2: of his eyes. As he was wiping his face, light
- 5:54Speaker 2: emerged from the darkness. The all-consuming blackness was replaced with
- 5:58Speaker 2: marvelous colors and shapes. The man was healed from his blindness.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The man passed right by Jesus and walked away since
- 6:06Speaker 2: he did not know the sight of him from before.
- 6:08Speaker 2: As he was walking the city streets, taking in all
- 6:11Speaker 2: the new images, people began to notice him. Isn't that
- 6:15Speaker 2: the blind beggar? they asked themselves. No, it can't be,
- 6:19Speaker 2: they replied. The man heard them and said, You are right,
- 6:22Speaker 2: I was the blind beggar that sat by the road.
- 6:25Speaker 2: The people were astonished. How were your eyes opened?
- 6:28Speaker 3: They asked.
- 6:29Speaker 2: The man replied, The man called Jesus made mud and
- 6:33Speaker 2: anointed my eyes with it. He asked me to wash
- 6:36Speaker 2: it off by the pool, and then my eyes were
- 6:38Speaker 2: given sight. Where is Jesus?
- 6:40Speaker 3: They asked.
- 6:41Speaker 2: How would I know? the man replied. I did not
- 6:44Speaker 2: see him before my sight was given to me. Some
- 6:47Speaker 2: of the skeptics brought the man to the Pharisees, who
- 6:49Speaker 2: had made themselves the enemies of Jesus. The man stood
- 6:52Speaker 2: before them, wondering why he was being judged for being healed. However,
- 6:56Speaker 2: it was the Sabbath, and the religious leaders had made
- 6:59Speaker 2: many laws preventing people from doing any sort of work,
- 7:02Speaker 2: good or bad, that day. The Pharisees lifted their noses
- 7:06Speaker 2: high and asked, How did you come by your new sight?
- 7:09Speaker 2: The man sighed. As I have said before, Jesus put
- 7:13Speaker 2: mud in my eyes and asked me to wash them off.
- 7:16Speaker 2: When I did, my sight was given to me. The
- 7:19Speaker 2: Pharisees scoffed. They argued amongst themselves whether Jesus had done
- 7:24Speaker 2: anything good at all. since he healed a man on
- 7:26Speaker 2: the Sabbath. They turned to the man and asked, What
- 7:30Speaker 2: do you think about Jesus? Is he a sinner or
- 7:33Speaker 2: a savior? I believe he could be a prophet, the
- 7:37Speaker 2: man said without thinking. This answer displeased the Pharisees. They
- 7:42Speaker 2: did not want to believe Jesus would do something so kind.
- 7:45Speaker 2: They wanted to villainize him. So they brought up the
- 7:48Speaker 2: man's parents to validate that he was indeed born blind.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Was your son in fact born blind? they asked the parents.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Both the mother and the father feared the Pharisees. They
- 7:58Speaker 2: did not want to answer, since they were known to
- 8:01Speaker 2: throw disagreeing people out of the synagogues. Our son is
- 8:05Speaker 2: of age, they said. You may ask him yourself. So
- 8:09Speaker 2: the Pharisees asked the young man again what he believed
- 8:12Speaker 2: about Jesus. The man paused for a moment and considered
- 8:15Speaker 2: the question. He closed his eyes to remove distraction. A
- 8:19Speaker 2: single tear fell from his face as he smiled. He
- 8:22Speaker 2: looked up to the Pharisees and said, All I know
- 8:26Speaker 2: is that I was born blind, but now I can see.
- 8:29Speaker 2: The Pharisees shook in their seats. What did he do
- 8:33Speaker 2: to you? they yelled. How did he open your eyes?
- 8:37Speaker 2: The young man was beginning to grow tired of their questions.
- 8:40Speaker 2: He answered and said to them, Why do you keep
- 8:43Speaker 2: asking me? I have told you what he did. Do
- 8:45Speaker 2: you ask me because you want to be like him
- 8:48Speaker 2: or become his disciples? The Pharisees stood to their feet
- 8:52Speaker 2: and scoffed. Of course not, they exclaimed. We are disciples
- 8:57Speaker 2: of Moses only. Jesus is a stranger. The man shook
- 9:01Speaker 2: his head. This is outrageous, he replied. You say he
- 9:05Speaker 2: is a stranger, yet he opened my eyes. You and
- 9:07Speaker 2: I both know that God does not do this sort
- 9:10Speaker 2: of thing through evil men. Never have you or I
- 9:13Speaker 2: ever heard of a mere man opening the eyes of
- 9:15Speaker 2: someone born blind. Yet here I stand before you. If
- 9:19Speaker 2: Jesus was not of God, I would not be here.
- 9:23Speaker 2: You are a mutt born from hell, the Pharisees yelled.
- 9:26Speaker 2: They called for the temple guards to seize him, and
- 9:29Speaker 2: the man was cast out from the courts. The young
- 9:32Speaker 2: man was tossed out of the synagogue into the stone streets.
- 9:35Speaker 2: He slowly raised to his feet and brushed the dust
- 9:38Speaker 2: off his clothes. He was happy to have sight, yet
- 9:41Speaker 2: sad at what he had seen. Even his own parents
- 9:45Speaker 2: would not defend him. He walked to the old curb
- 9:48Speaker 2: where he used to sit and beg. He watched the
- 9:51Speaker 2: people pass by him, wondering if all people looked different.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Of course, he did not know, since he had been
- 9:57Speaker 2: born blind. As he let his mind wander, a stranger
- 10:00Speaker 2: sat beside him. He looked at the young man with
- 10:03Speaker 2: a warm smile. In fact, it was probably the first
- 10:06Speaker 2: smile he had seen in his life. Do you believe
- 10:09Speaker 2: in the Son of God? the stranger asked. I wonder
- 10:12Speaker 2: who he is. I would like to believe in him,
- 10:15Speaker 2: the young man answered. The stranger nodded. You have seen him.
- 10:20Speaker 2: It is he who is speaking to you. The young
- 10:23Speaker 2: man turned his head quickly and observed the stranger's face.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It was him, Jesus, the man who had healed his blindness,
- 10:31Speaker 2: the one and only begotten Son of God. Lord, I believe.
- 10:37Speaker 2: And the young man fell at Jesus' feet and worshipped him.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Jesus propped him up and embraced him. I have come
- 10:45Speaker 2: that those who are blind might see, Jesus said. and
- 10:48Speaker 2: those that can see will become blind. Some of the
- 10:52Speaker 2: Pharisees passed by as Jesus spoke these words. They were
- 10:56Speaker 2: riled up by his statement and interrupted, saying, Are we
- 11:00Speaker 2: the blind ones? they asked. Jesus did not answer for
- 11:03Speaker 2: a moment. He could see the concern lying behind their
- 11:06Speaker 2: tough exterior. If you were blind, you would not feel
- 11:10Speaker 2: the inner guilt you are feeling right now. But since
- 11:13Speaker 2: you feel the need to tell me of your sight,
- 11:16Speaker 2: your blindness obviously remains.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Today's scripture begins in the public market, just as our
- 11:25Speaker 3: last episode did. This time, Jesus was with his disciples
- 11:29Speaker 3: walking through the streets on the Sabbath. They come upon
- 11:33Speaker 3: a young man who has been blind since birth. Seeing him,
- 11:36Speaker 3: the disciples pose a question to Jesus. But their question
- 11:40Speaker 3: is different from the Pharisees. They are seeking to understand
- 11:44Speaker 3: and to find wisdom, not to trap the teacher, but
- 11:47Speaker 3: to truly understand why this man was in his condition.
- 11:52Speaker 3: They asked whose sin to cause this man to be
- 11:54Speaker 3: born blind, because this was the prevailing idea of the time.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Sickness and disability happened as a direct result of some
- 12:02Speaker 3: sin or wrongdoing, as punishment from God for bad behavior.
- 12:07Speaker 3: The question of these men was sincere, but it revealed
- 12:10Speaker 3: a deep understanding of the true loving nature of God.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So Jesus gently corrected them, saying his parents had done
- 12:18Speaker 3: nothing wrong. He didn't mean that they were without sin,
- 12:21Speaker 3: of course. only that the blindness, this man's blindness, was
- 12:24Speaker 3: not a result of punishment for anyone's sin. In fact,
- 12:29Speaker 3: difficult as it was for this man, his blindness had
- 12:32Speaker 3: a purpose, to show God's power and his compassion. The
- 12:37Speaker 3: truth is, we often can't answer the why question, why
- 12:40Speaker 3: something is happening, why something bad happens to bad people
- 12:44Speaker 3: or good people. We can understand maybe why bad things
- 12:47Speaker 3: happen to bad people, but why does it happen to
- 12:51Speaker 3: so-called innocent people. When we face a why question, something
- 12:55Speaker 3: that we cannot answer, we should really begin to ask
- 12:59Speaker 3: the what question. God, what are you doing in this situation?
- 13:03Speaker 3: What is your purpose? What is your plan? Jesus then
- 13:08Speaker 3: spat on some dirt and rubbed it in the man's
- 13:11Speaker 3: eyes and told him to go wash in the pool
- 13:12Speaker 3: of Siloam. For the first time ever, this man could
- 13:16Speaker 3: see the world around him. a world that up to
- 13:18Speaker 3: that point had been filled only with darkness. Just think
- 13:21Speaker 3: how incredible, how amazing this would be to see for
- 13:24Speaker 3: the very first time a whole new world had opened
- 13:28Speaker 3: to this man. When those who knew him saw this man,
- 13:31Speaker 3: they were incredulous. How could this man born blind who
- 13:35Speaker 3: begged in the streets so long now see? But he insisted, yes,
- 13:39Speaker 3: it was him. A man called Jesus cured his blindness.
- 13:43Speaker 3: He'd never had a chance to see Jesus, though, so
- 13:46Speaker 3: he could not point him out to anyone. This man's
- 13:48Speaker 3: story was so amazing that they took him before the Pharisees, who,
- 13:53Speaker 3: rather than praise God for the healing of a man
- 13:55Speaker 3: in need, immediately began to find fault. The man had
- 13:59Speaker 3: been healed on the Sabbath, and in their limited vision
- 14:02Speaker 3: of God, they believed that this was somehow against God's law.
- 14:07Speaker 3: The Pharisees could not agree, however, if this man named
- 14:11Speaker 3: Jesus was good or a sinner. So they asked the
- 14:14Speaker 3: beggar what he thought. and he told them he believed
- 14:17Speaker 3: Jesus was a prophet. This didn't help matters. They still
- 14:21Speaker 3: weren't satisfied, so they asked the man's parents if he
- 14:24Speaker 3: was truly born blind. The parents refused to get involved.
- 14:28Speaker 3: For what reason, we don't know, but in this moment,
- 14:30Speaker 3: the blind man found himself standing alone, being questioned by
- 14:35Speaker 3: these religious authorities. What was meant to be a joyous
- 14:38Speaker 3: day for him has somehow now become a battle, a burden,
- 14:42Speaker 3: because of the lack of insight and compassion of of
- 14:46Speaker 3: the legalists. But he stayed with his story because he
- 14:50Speaker 3: knew it was true, saying that all he knew was
- 14:53Speaker 3: once he was blind and now he could see. What
- 14:57Speaker 3: a powerful testimony. And it was Jesus who gave him
- 15:00Speaker 3: his sight. So the Pharisees angrily sent him away, refusing
- 15:04Speaker 3: to believe in Jesus or this man, who to them
- 15:07Speaker 3: was nothing but a worthless sinner. Jesus then shows up.
- 15:12Speaker 3: He spoke to the man who did not know him
- 15:14Speaker 3: yet since he had never seen his healer. Jesus asked
- 15:18Speaker 3: him a simple question. Do you believe in the Son
- 15:22Speaker 3: of Man? We hear the man's response of eagerness to
- 15:25Speaker 3: believe as he asks, Where is this man that I
- 15:28Speaker 3: might believe in him? And Jesus reveals himself to the
- 15:32Speaker 3: man whose response found in John 9.38 reflects perfectly what
- 15:37Speaker 3: our response should be to Jesus. And he said, Lord,
- 15:40Speaker 3: I believe. and he worshiped him. When we believe in Jesus,
- 15:45Speaker 3: we bow before him and give our lives to him.
- 15:49Speaker 3: When Jesus opens our blind eyes, our response is to say, yes, Lord,
- 15:54Speaker 3: I believe, and I worship you. As for the religious crowd,
- 15:59Speaker 3: Jesus spoke to them saying that they were not blind
- 16:02Speaker 3: to their own sin. They knew it very clearly. Their
- 16:05Speaker 3: blindness was spiritual, a blindness that Though they failed to
- 16:09Speaker 3: realize it, Jesus was and is the only one who
- 16:13Speaker 3: can heal. Dear God, thank you for today's scripture and
- 16:17Speaker 3: the power of Jesus to open our eyes that we
- 16:19Speaker 3: may see you. Thank you that you came to this
- 16:23Speaker 3: earth to heal our spiritual blindness because you are the
- 16:27Speaker 3: light of the world. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 16:33Speaker 3: for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast. Before
