- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This is episode number two hundred
- 0:18Speaker 1: and eighteen, and today the show, Dan, myself and our
- 0:22Speaker 1: buddy Andy may are tackling listenersmitted questions on topics such
- 0:26Speaker 1: as target, panic, analyzing, dear data, sent control, and advanced
- 0:31Speaker 1: wind strategies. All right, welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And today it's gonna be a fun episode. It's it's
- 0:53Speaker 1: kind of a BS session slash Q and a session
- 0:56Speaker 1: with the nine Fingered Wonder Dan Johnson and also our
- 1:01Speaker 1: buddy Andy may Ore d I Y white Tail Extraordinaire.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And um, we're to cover all sorts of stuff. Um
- 1:09Speaker 1: We've got questions related to you know, how to plan
- 1:13Speaker 1: d I Y trips, to what kind of harnesses are
- 1:16Speaker 1: good to use to send control, questions to um everything
- 1:21Speaker 1: about deal it's harder, panic, Just a whole slew of
- 1:24Speaker 1: wide and vary questions. But um, before we get to
- 1:29Speaker 1: the questions, I want to first offer a correction of
- 1:35Speaker 1: sorts and then I want to dive into what's new
- 1:37Speaker 1: with you Dan and you Andy? UM. But first correction
- 1:42Speaker 1: or sort of an addition to the conversation we had
- 1:46Speaker 1: in last week's episode. So if you haven't heard episode
- 1:49Speaker 1: two seventeen, we had this episode with the folks over
- 1:53Speaker 1: from Modern Huntsmen, and the conversation was all about UM
- 1:57Speaker 1: their perspectives on how we might want to think about
- 2:02Speaker 1: adjusting the way we communicate about hunting so that it's
- 2:06Speaker 1: it's UM easy to bring new hunters into the fold,
- 2:09Speaker 1: so that we're doing a slightly better job of improving
- 2:12Speaker 1: kind of the the perception of hunting to the outside world.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So there's a whole bunch of different ideas and UM
- 2:19Speaker 1: perspectives and thoughts shared on ways to do that. UH.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And I think it's a really important conversation, and I
- 2:26Speaker 1: think it's an important thing. But there's one thing that
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure I did a good enough job of mentioning,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and it's this, And I just want to make sure
- 2:33Speaker 1: we say this that as much as we need to
- 2:36Speaker 1: be careful and considered about how we present hunting and
- 2:39Speaker 1: how we communicate about hunting, UM, as much as that
- 2:43Speaker 1: is important, at the same time, it's my opinion that
- 2:46Speaker 1: We don't need to apologize for hunting. We shouldn't need
- 2:49Speaker 1: to feel like we need to hide what hunting is
- 2:51Speaker 1: or that we need to not be proud of it.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We should be proud of who we are. We should
- 2:57Speaker 1: be proud hunters. We can do that, though, I think
- 3:01Speaker 1: in a way that achieves both things. We can be
- 3:04Speaker 1: a proud hunter and also be positive representatives of hunting.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I think there's a happy medium in there where we
- 3:09Speaker 1: don't need to sugarcoat what we're doing, but at the
- 3:11Speaker 1: same time, we don't need to present something that's appalling
- 3:13Speaker 1: to the rest of the world either. UM So that's
- 3:16Speaker 1: just one thing I want to make sure that's out
- 3:17Speaker 1: there in the world, is that there's a way that
- 3:20Speaker 1: we can be true to ourselves and be positive representatives.
- 3:23Speaker 1: UM no need to pretend that we're not doing what
- 3:26Speaker 1: we're doing. So that's my small, tiny update from last
- 3:31Speaker 1: week's episode. Dan Johnson, I guess before anything else, do
- 3:36Speaker 1: you agree with that? R? Wow? All right, Dan's excited.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'm fired out, fired out? Okay, what do you fired at? Yeah?
- 3:45Speaker 1: I agree with it, and kind of I am fired
- 3:48Speaker 1: up about life. You had a great trip, right right, right,
- 3:52Speaker 1: had a great trip, um, and it's kind of funny
- 3:56Speaker 1: you mentioned this, um, you know, not apologizing were being
- 4:00Speaker 1: a hunter. My trip was out to California, where everybody,
- 4:06Speaker 1: you know, very liberal state so to speak, especially the
- 4:09Speaker 1: area that I was around, and hunting came up in conversation, um,
- 4:15Speaker 1: because I, you know, I would wear maybe a hunting
- 4:17Speaker 1: T shirt or what do you do in you know,
- 4:21Speaker 1: what do you do? And then my wife mentioned that,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, I have a hunting podcast and all this stuff,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and it was really really cool to be able to say,
- 4:31Speaker 1: you know, I'm a bow hunter. And by the way,
- 4:34Speaker 1: people think that all hunting is done with guns out there.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Every person I talked to and then I mentioned that
- 4:42Speaker 1: I only you know, hunted deer with archery equipment, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: their mind, the people that I talked to that someone
- 4:50Speaker 1: was doing something so primitive still these days, and they
- 4:55Speaker 1: had this, you know, this vision that all hunters were
- 4:57Speaker 1: gun hunters, and it was it was awesome to kind
- 5:00Speaker 1: of walk them through what I did, how I did it,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know, walk them through you know, hey, I don't
- 5:05Speaker 1: I don't just hunt for the antlers. I used the
- 5:07Speaker 1: meat too, And that was another misconception that they had
- 5:10Speaker 1: that they they felt that they people only hunted with
- 5:14Speaker 1: guns and that they only hunted for like animals with
- 5:20Speaker 1: large horns or antlers. So people were pretty open to
- 5:24Speaker 1: like that conversation though, like they're curious. It wasn't like
- 5:27Speaker 1: they shut you out as soon as they found out
- 5:28Speaker 1: you were a hunter. Um No, not really. The people
- 5:31Speaker 1: that I talked to were intrigued first of all, and
- 5:35Speaker 1: then as I kind of you know, you could tell
- 5:39Speaker 1: that they maybe had run into someone before, had an
- 5:43Speaker 1: interaction with a hunter before that probably did not do
- 5:46Speaker 1: a good job. But I made it a point to
- 5:49Speaker 1: get my entire um, i guess spiel out there, so
- 5:54Speaker 1: you know, so I didn't compare myself to the stereotype
- 5:59Speaker 1: that they had probably been introduced to first of all,
- 6:03Speaker 1: if that makes sense. Yeah, yeah, that's awesome that I
- 6:07Speaker 1: always I love those opportunities when you get to have
- 6:10Speaker 1: talk to someone who is intrigued, you know, and and
- 6:13Speaker 1: and offer the context you know. So often, like you said,
- 6:17Speaker 1: there's a stereotype and people never never get a chance
- 6:20Speaker 1: to go deeper into what it is we do. So
- 6:22Speaker 1: when you do get that chance, I get pretty excited
- 6:24Speaker 1: about that. Yeah, And it was it was one of
- 6:27Speaker 1: the first times. It's like three times that trip where
- 6:32Speaker 1: I had to break it down for people and you know,
- 6:36Speaker 1: talk to them. They're like, oh, it doesn't dear meat
- 6:39Speaker 1: taste bad. And I'm like, it tastes bad if you
- 6:42Speaker 1: haven't cooked it right, you know, because we were up
- 6:44Speaker 1: in wine country and we were doing you know, the
- 6:48Speaker 1: conversation was always about what kind of food do you
- 6:51Speaker 1: pair with this wine or what kind of wine do
- 6:53Speaker 1: you pair with this food? So I asked, you know, like,
- 6:56Speaker 1: we eat a lot of venison in my house, and
- 6:57Speaker 1: they're like venison. I'm like, yeah, dear meat. And they're like,
- 7:01Speaker 1: you eat deer and I'm like, yeah, I'm a I'm
- 7:04Speaker 1: a hunter or whatever. I go out and I harvest
- 7:07Speaker 1: animals and I you know, clean them up, and I
- 7:09Speaker 1: feed my family with them. And there they were intrigued
- 7:11Speaker 1: by that. But then they got excited because I was
- 7:14Speaker 1: able to introduce something that I liked, which was hunting
- 7:18Speaker 1: and eating dear meat, to something that they liked to do,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and that was pair wines with specific food. So it
- 7:27Speaker 1: took this guy off in a new, completely new direction.
- 7:30Speaker 1: He's like, venison, Okay, that's a you know, that's somewhat
- 7:33Speaker 1: of a lean dark meat. So yeah, you can do
- 7:35Speaker 1: this or this or this, and so like we we
- 7:39Speaker 1: shared excitement. So that was kind of that was kind
- 7:41Speaker 1: of cool. So are you are now mm hmm No,
- 7:47Speaker 1: not even close, my man. Uh, but but I did, dude,
- 7:52Speaker 1: I did taste a lot of wines. We did go
- 7:54Speaker 1: to a lot of vineyards. It was a unique experience.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You know, that trip was pretty much brownie points for
- 7:59Speaker 1: my wife. Uh. But it was a unique experience because
- 8:04Speaker 1: and as you know, Mark, you used to live out
- 8:06Speaker 1: in that area north of San Francisco is absolutely gorgeous country.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I mean rolling, rolling hills, um big valleys. And then
- 8:19Speaker 1: the last day of the trip, we went to the Pacific. Um.
- 8:22Speaker 1: We've made one stop at a redwood forest, um Armstrong Woods,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and it just you know, the history in that area,
- 8:33Speaker 1: the you know, we we sat underneath of a tree
- 8:38Speaker 1: that was hundred years old and our yeah, years old
- 8:43Speaker 1: and ft tall. You don't get trees that, you know
- 8:46Speaker 1: like that in Iowa. And then we made it to
- 8:48Speaker 1: the coast and took Highway one all the way back
- 8:51Speaker 1: down to San Francisco and stopped at Point Reyes National Seashore. Dude,
- 8:59Speaker 1: like like a picture. I mean, it's like a painting.
- 9:02Speaker 1: It's just unbelievably beautiful. Yeah, you have, you had some
- 9:07Speaker 1: great pictures. It seemed like you had a great time
- 9:09Speaker 1: down there. But it did it did seem like um
- 9:12Speaker 1: and Andy. I'm not sure if you saw this online,
- 9:14Speaker 1: but it seemed like Dan's most favorite part of the
- 9:17Speaker 1: entire trip. He's not mentioning here publicly. I'm not sure
- 9:20Speaker 1: why he's not mentioning this, But I saw that you
- 9:22Speaker 1: became a you became a professional segue racer. I don't
- 9:29Speaker 1: care where you go. Let's say you go. Let's say
- 9:33Speaker 1: the next time we're in Uh, where's the a t
- 9:35Speaker 1: a show this year? Mark Louisville. If they have a
- 9:39Speaker 1: Louisville segue tour, you best believe I'm gonna be on it,
- 9:43Speaker 1: because dude, I looked like a nerd wear and a
- 9:47Speaker 1: yellow vest and a helmet. But writing a segue is
- 9:50Speaker 1: really fun. And I'll tell you what else is really fun.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Looking at the pictures of you writing a segue, I
- 9:57Speaker 1: laughed and laughed and I posted that series of pictures
- 10:00Speaker 1: of you on my Instagram story and we had so
- 10:04Speaker 1: many people messaged me just cracking up. So you brought
- 10:07Speaker 1: a lot of joy to people's lives this weekend. Dan,
- 10:10Speaker 1: That's what I'm here for. That's what I'm here for.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I got a question for you. Yeah, did you uh?
- 10:15Speaker 1: Did you happen to see anyone holder us out there?
- 10:18Speaker 1: You know? I did, not a lot, because I don't
- 10:22Speaker 1: know if you know this, but there in October there
- 10:25Speaker 1: was a absolutely huge gigantic fire that wiped out thousands
- 10:33Speaker 1: of houses and thousands upon thousands of acres of uh,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I guess land, and I saw man, I saw a
- 10:45Speaker 1: lot or I saw about four black tailed deer. I
- 10:49Speaker 1: don't know if one of them was a mule deer.
- 10:51Speaker 1: I'm assuming it was like a black tailed deer. Everybody
- 10:55Speaker 1: calls them coastal deer out there. But all those Now,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the the guy who, let's see, we stayed out of airbnb,
- 11:05Speaker 1: uh the last two nights. And the guy goes this morning,
- 11:09Speaker 1: when I was taking my trash out, there were five
- 11:12Speaker 1: there were five bucks standing in his yard and then
- 11:16Speaker 1: they when he went to go take his trash out,
- 11:18Speaker 1: they ran into a vineyard. And um, but that would
- 11:22Speaker 1: have been cool to see. I didn't see him. Um.
- 11:25Speaker 1: And the guy there there is a hunting presence there
- 11:29Speaker 1: because people do not like the deer eating all their profits,
- 11:36Speaker 1: so they they allow hunters to come into the vineyards
- 11:40Speaker 1: and harvest the animals. So that's that's pretty cool as well. Yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 1: I know that area out there is very pretty, Like
- 11:52Speaker 1: you mentioned, I spent a little bit of time out
- 11:53Speaker 1: there just after college, and uh, I always I wish
- 11:58Speaker 1: at the time I was work there, you know, my
- 12:01Speaker 1: old day job south of San Francisco during the fall,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and so I was missing out on hunting season in
- 12:06Speaker 1: the Midwest. I wish that I had tried to figure
- 12:09Speaker 1: out how to pull off a hunt out there, just
- 12:11Speaker 1: I don't know what I would have done. Found some
- 12:12Speaker 1: public land and tried it, but I guess I was
- 12:14Speaker 1: so caught up in the job and everything I didn't
- 12:17Speaker 1: But that's one of my regrets. You know, I was
- 12:18Speaker 1: out in this very different, interesting place. I should have
- 12:21Speaker 1: tried to take advantage of that. But if I could
- 12:24Speaker 1: do it again, I would have explored that region up
- 12:26Speaker 1: by where you were at, because it seems like there
- 12:28Speaker 1: are some opportunities there. But that's cool. I'm glad you
- 12:31Speaker 1: had a good trip. Glad she's got some brownie points.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Um do you have you been able to quantify exactly
- 12:37Speaker 1: how many days of hunting this is gonna equal? Is
- 12:39Speaker 1: this equal to two weeks of rout hunts or or
- 12:41Speaker 1: what did you achieve? This is equal? This is equal
- 12:45Speaker 1: to let me think this is equal to one dear
- 12:49Speaker 1: trip or one elk trip out to Colorado in September
- 12:54Speaker 1: and potentially a mule your hunt to South Dakota in December. Man, well,
- 13:02Speaker 1: this is a wonderful investment. Yeah. I don't know about that.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I don't I don't know if the the r o
- 13:08Speaker 1: I is gonna be uh worth it. But she was happy,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and you know, you know they're saying, when when mom
- 13:15Speaker 1: is happy, everybody else can be happy. So yeah, man,
- 13:17Speaker 1: that's good stuff. I'm glad it. I'm glad it went well.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Uh Andy, I saw that this past week and you
- 13:23Speaker 1: were up to some fun stuff too at the Total
- 13:25Speaker 1: Archery Challenge up in Northern Michigan. How was that? That
- 13:29Speaker 1: was great? Have you guys ever done it? No? I haven't, No, No, Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 1: it's pretty incredible. Um. I went for the first time
- 13:39Speaker 1: last year, and uh, you know, I've heard about it
- 13:42Speaker 1: and see seen some like YouTube videos and stuff, and
- 13:45Speaker 1: it looked like a lot of fun. And um, I
- 13:47Speaker 1: went last year with a buddy and uh it was
- 13:50Speaker 1: just it was the most fun I ever had shooting
- 13:53Speaker 1: my bow, just because you know, they incorporate they tried
- 13:56Speaker 1: to mimic the out West experience. So you know, they
- 14:00Speaker 1: you right up the ski lift, um, you know, to
- 14:02Speaker 1: the top of the mountain, and you kind of shoot
- 14:04Speaker 1: your way down, kind of hike in between, um, you know,
- 14:08Speaker 1: each each shot. So like we shot all day, fray,
- 14:15Speaker 1: I'm sorry, all day Saturday, and then half a day Sunday.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But we put on seventeen miles. So that was that
- 14:24Speaker 1: was in three course. Uh, targets per course. So it's
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's cool because they incorporate, you know, the physical challenge
- 14:33Speaker 1: of you know, hiking around a lot of guys a
- 14:37Speaker 1: pack and some guys even put a little weight in
- 14:39Speaker 1: the back just to kind of you get that full
- 14:41Speaker 1: experience of of you know, an out West hunt. Um,
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's a ton of fun. They got some really tricky shots.
- 14:49Speaker 1: It's a lot of long range stuff, so you know, um,
- 14:53Speaker 1: a lot of guys kind of trained for it and uh,
- 14:56Speaker 1: you know practice their long range accuracy because there's there's
- 14:59Speaker 1: some you know, several targets over a hundred yards. Um,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you don't have to shoot at that distance. There's no rule,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you don't have to keep scores. It's really a fun shoot.
- 15:09Speaker 1: There's no winner and a loser. So if if you
- 15:12Speaker 1: walk up to a hundred yard target and you know
- 15:15Speaker 1: you don't feel comfortable, you can walk up to sixty yards.
- 15:18Speaker 1: You can walk up to forty yards and shoot it
- 15:20Speaker 1: and have fun. Um and you know, go to the
- 15:23Speaker 1: next one. So it's it's a great time. We met
- 15:27Speaker 1: a ton of people and everybody is just you know,
- 15:30Speaker 1: everybody's like you guys, just cool, fun to talk to.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You talk a lot of honey in a lot art
- 15:35Speaker 1: three and just really, I don't I don't know that
- 15:37Speaker 1: I'll ever miss it unless something, you know, with the
- 15:40Speaker 1: family comes up. I'll probably go every year. Wow. Yeah,
- 15:43Speaker 1: it looks like it looks like a good time, and
- 15:45Speaker 1: you've heard just everyone I talked to about it. Also
- 15:48Speaker 1: is the same thing, whether it's the one here in
- 15:50Speaker 1: Michigan or I know a lot of guys go out
- 15:52Speaker 1: to one in Montana. That seems like a great event.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Um Man, I saw you, I saw you making a
- 15:59Speaker 1: hundred and twenties six yards shot Andy, that's impressive. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:04Speaker 1: well I I should almost every day, so uh, you know,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I just it. I think it's it sounds a little
- 16:11Speaker 1: more intimidating than it is. Um. You know, if you
- 16:14Speaker 1: gotta a good tune set up, and you know you
- 16:18Speaker 1: gotta you obviously gotta have some decent form and shoot
- 16:21Speaker 1: quite a bit. But you know, these days, they have
- 16:23Speaker 1: some sites that you know, you can kind of dial in,
- 16:27Speaker 1: uh you know to extreme yardages, and I think what
- 16:31Speaker 1: what freaks a lot of people out is, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 1: it's something that distance. What happens is that your pin
- 16:36Speaker 1: float looks huge, right, so it looks like your pins
- 16:39Speaker 1: dancing all over the target. But if you can kind
- 16:41Speaker 1: of ignore that and let that go and just run
- 16:44Speaker 1: through your shot sequence, you know, you'll be all right.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Use your southing done. Though. I bet I don't have enough.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I don't have enough arrows to participate in the Total
- 16:54Speaker 1: Archery Challenge. Yeah, yeah, yeah, there's there's a it's funny,
- 17:00Speaker 1: there's a bucket there that's uh, you know, all the
- 17:02Speaker 1: broken arrows. You know that, Um, you know that people
- 17:05Speaker 1: pick up throughout the course and it's just chuck full
- 17:07Speaker 1: of them. And I don't know. I put a YouTube
- 17:10Speaker 1: video on my Facebook page, but there's a on this
- 17:14Speaker 1: one target you're shooting. It was like ninety six yards
- 17:16Speaker 1: and you're you gotta thread it between two trees that
- 17:20Speaker 1: are i don't know, maybe twenty inches apart at a
- 17:22Speaker 1: dough or I think it was a buck target. Um.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But the tree on the right had about sixty arrow inserts.
- 17:34Speaker 1: The tree looked like it was about to tip over.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It was so funny. But yeah, it's it's a good time.
- 17:39Speaker 1: You go. They're kind of expecting, you know, you know,
- 17:42Speaker 1: to lose a few arrows. I had some buddies that
- 17:44Speaker 1: went for the first time and they most of these
- 17:47Speaker 1: guys had never shot over you know, probably fifty sixty yards,
- 17:50Speaker 1: but they practiced, you know, and they got a site,
- 17:54Speaker 1: an adjustable site where they could kind of dial into
- 17:57Speaker 1: those longer yards is and they did They did good.
- 17:59Speaker 1: They did a good job. It was fun nice. So
- 18:03Speaker 1: that that sounds like an awesome time, Andy, um So,
- 18:06Speaker 1: so I want to jump in now and give you
- 18:08Speaker 1: guys two pieces of news from me. Um. I've got
- 18:12Speaker 1: one piece of good news and I've got one piece
- 18:13Speaker 1: of bad news. Which do you want to hear? First
- 18:17Speaker 1: bad bad Okay, the bad news is that me and
- 18:23Speaker 1: further lost our ohio lease, Oh man, did they find out?
- 18:30Speaker 1: Did they find out that you merged with Ronella? And
- 18:33Speaker 1: they they said, hey man, this guy's got some money.
- 18:35Speaker 1: He has to have some money. Uh, let's charge up more.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And then you're like, screw that. I'm not gonna pay
- 18:41Speaker 1: that ridiculous. You know, that's an interesting uh scenario, you
- 18:46Speaker 1: paint their dam. But no, that's not what happened. Um. Unfortunately,
- 18:52Speaker 1: the situation is that um, the landowners, um, I have
- 18:57Speaker 1: got to an age where they cannot live there anymore,
- 18:59Speaker 1: and their children are selling the property. So yeah, been
- 19:05Speaker 1: there many Yeah, it's a major bumber. Had a lot
- 19:10Speaker 1: of really good memories out there, a lot of great
- 19:12Speaker 1: hunting trips over the last oh gosh, I don't know,
- 19:15Speaker 1: six seven years now. So but how how bummed are
- 19:20Speaker 1: you actually, because it sounds to me like the last
- 19:23Speaker 1: couple of years, although that that leash produced some big
- 19:27Speaker 1: deer in the past, like, it sounds to me like
- 19:29Speaker 1: it was trending downhill. Anyway, It was trending downhill, yes,
- 19:34Speaker 1: but still like compared to anything I had in Michigan,
- 19:37Speaker 1: it was still the best chance I have to see
- 19:40Speaker 1: or kill a mature buck, you know, even though it's
- 19:42Speaker 1: a small limited property. Um pressure increasing. But but nowhere
- 19:48Speaker 1: else do I hunt where I was seeing those kinds
- 19:49Speaker 1: of deer. Um. So I'm just now now it's just
- 19:53Speaker 1: like square one. The one thing is at least I
- 19:55Speaker 1: had that in my back pocket, you know. Now it's
- 19:58Speaker 1: what am I going to do for ohile? So that'll
- 20:02Speaker 1: be a fun new challenge to figure out over the
- 20:04Speaker 1: next couple of months. I guess nothing like summer timing
- 20:08Speaker 1: for that. I guess it could be worse. So that's
- 20:11Speaker 1: the bad news. I'm sure we'll have more to share
- 20:14Speaker 1: in that in future episodes. Is I kind of figure
- 20:16Speaker 1: out what my other options are? Um? Good news though, well,
- 20:21Speaker 1: we'll focus on the good I think I saw holy
- 20:24Speaker 1: Field last night. What yep, Um, are you laughing over
- 20:33Speaker 1: the da Yes, you know, here's what's gonna happen. Um,
- 20:38Speaker 1: you're gonna You're probably gonna if I know you at all,
- 20:40Speaker 1: you're probably gonna change your mind, you know, and you
- 20:43Speaker 1: might dedicate another season to this buck. Um. I just
- 20:48Speaker 1: recommend like practicing hundred yard shots from a tree stand.
- 20:52Speaker 1: That way you can at least give yourself an opportunity
- 20:56Speaker 1: at him this year. Yeah, I I sense holy Field
- 21:04Speaker 1: fatigue from you, Dan, which, dude, it's cool. I've been
- 21:10Speaker 1: through the I've been through the same thing. But um,
- 21:14Speaker 1: it's just one of these things I think for me,
- 21:17Speaker 1: you know, I followed these books for a long time,
- 21:20Speaker 1: like or for sets of Deer or whatever, for a
- 21:24Speaker 1: long periods of time, and it's the moment that you
- 21:27Speaker 1: least expect it is the moment it will happen. It's
- 21:30Speaker 1: almost like you forget about it and then all of
- 21:34Speaker 1: a sudden, that is the day that holy Field will
- 21:36Speaker 1: show up in a shooting line. Yeah. Well, uh, you know,
- 21:39Speaker 1: we talked a little bit about it a month or
- 21:41Speaker 1: two ago. But just how, And I won't belabor the
- 21:43Speaker 1: point too much now, but just how. My strategy this
- 21:46Speaker 1: year is probably gonna be too, not be so singlemindedly
- 21:50Speaker 1: focused on them. Like I've got a lot of things
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna be doing here in the off season, trying
- 21:53Speaker 1: to make sure I'm prepared, but I'm not gonna obsess
- 21:56Speaker 1: over it too much. And you know, if there's other
- 21:59Speaker 1: opportunit and he's the other deer, I'll probably take that too,
- 22:02Speaker 1: So him. Well, I don't know on but um, I
- 22:08Speaker 1: was able to watch these big batchelor group of bucks
- 22:11Speaker 1: in a bean field a couple hundred yards away with
- 22:13Speaker 1: a spotting scope and it was right at last light.
- 22:16Speaker 1: So I can't say for sure, but based off the
- 22:18Speaker 1: brow times and the main beams spread and everything so far,
- 22:22Speaker 1: it looks like the brow times and everything match what
- 22:25Speaker 1: he looks like. Um. And I thought, you know, one time,
- 22:28Speaker 1: I thought when his ear was like kind of backlit
- 22:30Speaker 1: by the sky, I thought I could see a chunk
- 22:32Speaker 1: missing from the ear. Um. So I'm not a percent sure,
- 22:36Speaker 1: but it looks like as close of a match as
- 22:39Speaker 1: you could possibly get at this point in the growth.
- 22:42Speaker 1: So hopefully he'll be out there again. Whatever that buck was,
- 22:45Speaker 1: Hopefully he'll be back again sometime soon, and maybe he'll
- 22:47Speaker 1: be with more daylight and I can get a better
- 22:50Speaker 1: look at him. But um, but encouraging that there's at
- 22:52Speaker 1: least one mature buck closest property. So it wasn't on
- 22:56Speaker 1: the proper deckon hunt. It was across the road from it,
- 22:59Speaker 1: but but right there, and and that certainly could be
- 23:02Speaker 1: where he's at. So that was good to see. That
- 23:04Speaker 1: was awesome. Yeah, pretty cool, you got cameras out, you know,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I actually don't. Um, I was you know, usually I
- 23:13Speaker 1: get him out earlier in the year, but um, but
- 23:15Speaker 1: this year I was thinking of just kind of holding
- 23:16Speaker 1: off and getting him out probably right before I leave
- 23:20Speaker 1: for Montana. So probably two weeks from now, I'll put
- 23:22Speaker 1: him out and just having fresh batteries and writer rock
- 23:24Speaker 1: and roll and let him soak for for a month
- 23:27Speaker 1: a month and a half and check him in August.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So that's my game plan. Good luck, buddy, Thank you.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Sarah Mark. Do you have a um an out West
- 23:37Speaker 1: white Tail Hunt playing this year again? Yeah, so I
- 23:40Speaker 1: got I've got him Montana white Tail tag again. Um.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So definitely gonna do that. Um and then small chance.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm still decide on whether or not I'm going to
- 23:50Speaker 1: do the North Dakota thing. Um I've got. I've scouted
- 23:53Speaker 1: out some great spots this spring, so I feel like
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'd love to get out there. It's just a matter
- 23:57Speaker 1: of can I slip in the North Dakota trip everything
- 24:00Speaker 1: else I've got going on without, you know, leaving my
- 24:04Speaker 1: family responsibilities too much. So yeah, you found a bunch
- 24:07Speaker 1: of sheds out in North Dakota too, right, Oh yeah, yeah,
- 24:11Speaker 1: found some found some good looking sheds. So I'd love
- 24:14Speaker 1: to hunt one of that deer that I found with
- 24:16Speaker 1: the draft time. I'd love to I'd love to get
- 24:19Speaker 1: after that buck. That'd be that'd be a unique opportunity.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So cool, we'll see, very cool. But you could always
- 24:25Speaker 1: you can always get a flat tire. I mean Montana
- 24:29Speaker 1: or North Dakota is in between Montana and Michigan. It's true,
- 24:35Speaker 1: so I could probably break down. So this is the
- 24:38Speaker 1: phone the phone call I make to my wife is
- 24:39Speaker 1: I'm so sorry hunting, but the cars broke down outside
- 24:42Speaker 1: a piece of public land in North Dakota, and I'm
- 24:44Speaker 1: gonna have it hunt here for a week. Yeah, that
- 24:49Speaker 1: seems like that'll fly. Um, okay, so do you guys
- 24:55Speaker 1: want to answer some some questions from the listeners. Let's
- 24:59Speaker 1: do it all right. Um, Let's take a quick break
- 25:03Speaker 1: then to thank our partners at White Tail Properties, and
- 25:06Speaker 1: then we'll get to those questions. This week with white
- 25:10Speaker 1: Tail Properties, we are joined by Brandon Schwartzlander, a land
- 25:13Speaker 1: specialist out of Illinois, and Brandon is going to be
- 25:16Speaker 1: telling us about the importance of getting the next generation
- 25:18Speaker 1: involved with land management. You know, that's a great question.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I think, Uh me personally, I think getting kids involved early,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and maybe not just kids, but but anyone who hasn't
- 25:31Speaker 1: experienced the outdoors or land. I mean, it's it's just
- 25:35Speaker 1: such an awesome advance. I honestly gotta potench myself sometimes
- 25:38Speaker 1: because I get to do this for a living. But
- 25:41Speaker 1: you know when when I have girls and some of
- 25:45Speaker 1: them hunt, some of them don't hunt, but just just
- 25:49Speaker 1: being out we all shoot, we all shoot bowse um,
- 25:53Speaker 1: and we all experienced the outdoors, we shed hunts, we
- 25:55Speaker 1: do all those things together. I just think that you
- 25:57Speaker 1: can take away so much or by spending time with
- 26:02Speaker 1: whether it's your family or friends or whomever in in
- 26:05Speaker 1: the woods or or you know, on a piece of land.
- 26:08Speaker 1: It's it's it's so much better than than you know,
- 26:12Speaker 1: having a phone stuck in your face or a laptop
- 26:14Speaker 1: or whatever. I just think it gives us an opportunity
- 26:17Speaker 1: to go back to to what we were raised on
- 26:19Speaker 1: and and I think, you know, maybe maybe that's missing
- 26:22Speaker 1: to some degree and in society today. But I just
- 26:26Speaker 1: think when when you introduce things at an early age,
- 26:28Speaker 1: I think I was probably five when I started um
- 26:31Speaker 1: in the outdoors with my dad. But it makes you
- 26:34Speaker 1: want to be better and it takes you away from,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you know, things that that can be a negative influence.
- 26:40Speaker 1: I just I feel like it's it's such a positive
- 26:42Speaker 1: thing for especially with family. I mean, when you can
- 26:45Speaker 1: can do those things with your kids and your wife
- 26:48Speaker 1: or whatever. If you'd like to learn more and to
- 26:50Speaker 1: see the properties that Brandon currently has listed for sale,
- 26:54Speaker 1: visit white tail properties dot com. Backslash Swartzlander that's s
- 26:59Speaker 1: w A R t z l A n d e R.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I want to start with a softball here, real quick,
- 27:09Speaker 1: this is this is really a softball. We got a
- 27:11Speaker 1: question from a guy named Jason on Instagram and he
- 27:15Speaker 1: said he said that he's been that he actually just
- 27:17Speaker 1: put purchased in Lone Wolf stands and sticks based off
- 27:21Speaker 1: of what Dan and I have been saying about them
- 27:23Speaker 1: the past, but he did not like the harness that
- 27:26Speaker 1: came with it, so he was curious what types of
- 27:29Speaker 1: safety harnesses do we use? What should we consider when
- 27:33Speaker 1: purchasing a safety harness that kind of stuff. So quick
- 27:36Speaker 1: gear question here, Dan, what's your safety harness? A choice? Well,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I am using a lone Wolf. I've been using the
- 27:44Speaker 1: lone Wolf h safety harness for a long time. But
- 27:48Speaker 1: I've also in the past used those vests. So it's
- 27:54Speaker 1: it's a like a vest you put on and all
- 27:57Speaker 1: you do is have to buckle it one time right
- 27:59Speaker 1: up front, easy and then you do your legs uh
- 28:03Speaker 1: and you're done. And that's it's a really easy way
- 28:05Speaker 1: to um to do that. I don't use it anymore
- 28:10Speaker 1: because I felt like there's points or times where it
- 28:13Speaker 1: would restrict some movement and I didn't like that, so
- 28:19Speaker 1: that I went to a full harness and not the vest.
- 28:22Speaker 1: So that's what I use. And when you say you're
- 28:25Speaker 1: using the lone wolf uh harness, that's not it's not
- 28:28Speaker 1: the freebie one that comes over a tree stande. No
- 28:31Speaker 1: it's not. Yeah, you're right, clarify, Yeah, it is not
- 28:34Speaker 1: the free one that comes with the tree stay and
- 28:36Speaker 1: I have the the other one with the padded straps
- 28:39Speaker 1: and all the all the all the goodies. Yeah, because
- 28:42Speaker 1: because those ones that come with tree stands. While while
- 28:44Speaker 1: I appreciate the fact they're giving you something, I don't
- 28:47Speaker 1: know anyone who actually uses those or finds it to
- 28:50Speaker 1: be a great option. I have a box in my
- 28:53Speaker 1: garage that of every tree stand I've ever purchased or
- 28:58Speaker 1: have received. I have a box of safety harnesses that
- 29:03Speaker 1: come with those tree stands. Yeah yeah, what what do
- 29:06Speaker 1: you using? Andy? Um? I actually use a rock climbing harness.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Have you guys heard of anybody using those? I have
- 29:14Speaker 1: heard of that I have. I've been intrigued by it.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Tell us, tell us more. Um well, Uh, there's a
- 29:23Speaker 1: buddy of mine. We actually when we when we all
- 29:26Speaker 1: went down to Louisiana, it was one of the guys
- 29:28Speaker 1: that met us at the bar um before that, long
- 29:32Speaker 1: before that, Um, I had talked to him and he
- 29:35Speaker 1: had started using a a rock climbing harness, And I
- 29:39Speaker 1: like the idea. I just don't like having straps and
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, all an abundance of stuff like on my
- 29:45Speaker 1: chest and shoulders, and um I never did really like that.
- 29:50Speaker 1: So I like the idea of just wearing something around
- 29:52Speaker 1: my waist. Um. So, he kind of had been doing
- 29:56Speaker 1: it for a year or two, and I think he
- 29:58Speaker 1: had some threads on archery talk and unning beasts and
- 30:00Speaker 1: that sort of thing, and um so, uh, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 1: he did some testing, like some fall testing, like turning
- 30:07Speaker 1: upside down in the in the tree wearing one and um,
- 30:11Speaker 1: you know kind of the theory that rock climbers use it. Um,
- 30:15Speaker 1: you know, so they are safe. And I like the
- 30:18Speaker 1: fact that, you know, you still tell her to the
- 30:20Speaker 1: tree um like you would with your your regular you know,
- 30:24Speaker 1: tree stand harness, except it comes around um, you know,
- 30:28Speaker 1: your right side if you're if you're a right handed shooter,
- 30:30Speaker 1: comes around your right side and clips on to a
- 30:33Speaker 1: little ballet loop and then your your waist belt and
- 30:36Speaker 1: it's it's just right there. It's out of the way. UM.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I can have it really snug um so that there's
- 30:42Speaker 1: no like, if I were to fall, there would be
- 30:45Speaker 1: no um like there there would be actually no drop.
- 30:50Speaker 1: It would catch me right away. I'd literally just swing
- 30:53Speaker 1: to the side of the tree. Does that make sense, Yeah, yeah,
- 30:55Speaker 1: yeah yeah. So I've been using that for a lot
- 30:58Speaker 1: of years. When I sit in a tree stand, um,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I do use a uh like a tree saddle sling
- 31:04Speaker 1: um quite a bit of the time to um. But
- 31:07Speaker 1: but when I'm in a tree stand, I I use
- 31:09Speaker 1: my rock climbing harness. And actually most of my friends
- 31:12Speaker 1: have converted to that too. Yeah. I haven't gone that route,
- 31:17Speaker 1: but I'm I've always been really intrigued by it because,
- 31:20Speaker 1: like you said, less bulk, less straps, less stuff to
- 31:23Speaker 1: have on you. Um, that's that's gotta be nice. But
- 31:27Speaker 1: but I imagine you really got to know the right
- 31:29Speaker 1: way to set it up. You need to be doing
- 31:31Speaker 1: it the you know, in a particular fashion to make
- 31:33Speaker 1: sure it's safe. Right. This isn't something to just buy
- 31:36Speaker 1: rock harness and throw it on the tree and think
- 31:38Speaker 1: you're okay, you should probably do. I'm not gonna yeah,
- 31:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna recommend it to anyone. Um, it's it's
- 31:43Speaker 1: actually very simple. Um, I feel I feel more safe
- 31:48Speaker 1: in it, to be honest with you, because if in
- 31:49Speaker 1: the event that you do take a slip, um you
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know, you swing to the side of the tree
- 31:55Speaker 1: and you're facing the tree so you can climb right
- 31:59Speaker 1: back up. In fact, he demonstrated that in the video.
- 32:01Speaker 1: You know, it kind of fell off the stand and
- 32:04Speaker 1: you turn and you face the tree, where in a
- 32:07Speaker 1: traditional tree stand harness you might fall and you're facing
- 32:10Speaker 1: away from the tree, which kind of have to spin
- 32:12Speaker 1: yourself around. You know. I think they're both plenty safe,
- 32:15Speaker 1: but yeah, I I mean, I don't go as far
- 32:17Speaker 1: as to recommend it because I think you should do
- 32:20Speaker 1: your research and make your own decision. But I, for me,
- 32:23Speaker 1: I really like it and I feel completely safe in it. Yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: you mentioned saddles too. I'm I've actually got a saddle
- 32:29Speaker 1: on the way. Finally I'm gonna try. I'm gonna try
- 32:33Speaker 1: hunting in a saddle this year, and uh see how
- 32:35Speaker 1: that goes. I'm excited to put that to the test.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Very cool. I have one thing that is preventing me
- 32:43Speaker 1: from trying a saddle, and and Andy Mark, you guys
- 32:48Speaker 1: both know that sometimes you are in some really thick
- 32:52Speaker 1: and nasty type terrain where you know, lots of vegetation,
- 32:57Speaker 1: and I just can't get over the fact that if
- 33:01Speaker 1: you know, I'm I draw with my right hand, so
- 33:04Speaker 1: if I'm facing one direction and a deer comes from
- 33:10Speaker 1: my right hand side, I have to, like, I have
- 33:15Speaker 1: to move a lot in that tree or like or
- 33:19Speaker 1: let him pass if if I'm going to take that shot.
- 33:23Speaker 1: And that's something for some reason, I can't get over that.
- 33:26Speaker 1: How do you have that? Um, well, it's in that
- 33:31Speaker 1: situation when a deer comes on your your kind of
- 33:34Speaker 1: your weak side, I guess, or you're off shooting side,
- 33:38Speaker 1: you know, you can, Uh, you can't. You can actually,
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, depending on where it's at, you can actually
- 33:44Speaker 1: stay where you are and kind of twist um. You have.
- 33:47Speaker 1: What you have is something called the bridge and it's
- 33:50Speaker 1: a little um like a rope attachment that that hooks
- 33:53Speaker 1: to the tree to other and you can actually slide
- 33:55Speaker 1: and turn and make that right handed shot. Your other
- 33:58Speaker 1: option is to kind of, like you said, creates a
- 34:00Speaker 1: little more movement, is is swinging around the tree to
- 34:03Speaker 1: the left side to make that shot. I I love
- 34:08Speaker 1: hunting out of a saddle, um because you wear it
- 34:10Speaker 1: in like a pair of shorts, you know, basically UM.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But there I don't think it's the best thing for
- 34:18Speaker 1: every situation. That's just my opinion. UM. Like, if you're
- 34:21Speaker 1: in a you know there there's some there's some trees
- 34:25Speaker 1: I can think of that have maybe have a lot
- 34:26Speaker 1: of limbs sticking out um that you can't trim, you know,
- 34:30Speaker 1: um or maybe like a cedar tree or or pine
- 34:33Speaker 1: tree or something like that. I think those are better
- 34:35Speaker 1: suited for tree stands. UM. But you know, if they
- 34:39Speaker 1: if you have, um, a tree that you know maybe
- 34:43Speaker 1: kind of splits is maybe a single trunk tree or
- 34:47Speaker 1: a tree that splits up into two trunks and you
- 34:49Speaker 1: don't have a lot of little limbs coming off left
- 34:51Speaker 1: and right. Um, that's kind of where they shine. And
- 34:54Speaker 1: in a lot of times you can find trees that work. Um,
- 34:57Speaker 1: you know, most of the time you can find trees
- 35:00Speaker 1: work in the saddle. I tend to get a little
- 35:02Speaker 1: higher up in the saddle. And what's cool about it
- 35:04Speaker 1: is you can you can put the tree you you
- 35:07Speaker 1: you try to put the tree in between where you
- 35:09Speaker 1: think the deer is going to come in yourself. So
- 35:11Speaker 1: you're kind of almost using it as a shield a blocker,
- 35:15Speaker 1: whereas a tree stand you'd be facing that direction or
- 35:18Speaker 1: or facing to the right so you could shoot it,
- 35:21Speaker 1: you know, going off to your left hand side. That
- 35:23Speaker 1: makes sense. Yeah, so you're saying that, you, well, maybe
- 35:27Speaker 1: you need to sacrifice a little bit of cover so
- 35:29Speaker 1: that you're able to swing around the tree and stuff.
- 35:31Speaker 1: You can account for that by height and being on
- 35:34Speaker 1: the other side. Is that what you're kind of saying. Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 1: And another thing about the saddle that I think is,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know that kind of is a benefit to it.
- 35:45Speaker 1: The way that you hang off the tree, you are
- 35:49Speaker 1: shaped more like a limb. You come off at kind
- 35:51Speaker 1: of like a forty five degree angle. Especially if you're leaning,
- 35:54Speaker 1: you look you look more like a tree branch a limb,
- 35:58Speaker 1: as opposed to like in a tree stand, you look
- 36:00Speaker 1: like a giant ball sticking off the side of the tree.
- 36:02Speaker 1: Unless you're you know, if you see the deer coming,
- 36:05Speaker 1: you can stand up and kind of suck into the
- 36:07Speaker 1: trunk of the tree and kind of blend in a
- 36:08Speaker 1: little bit. That's that's a better situation. But they I've
- 36:12Speaker 1: never I've hunted out of him a lot, and I've
- 36:15Speaker 1: shot quite a few deer out of them, and I've
- 36:17Speaker 1: never had a situation where, um, I thought it hindered
- 36:22Speaker 1: me um as far as having to move too much,
- 36:25Speaker 1: and I've I've had to move. You you know, you
- 36:27Speaker 1: might have to pick your moments. But you know, if
- 36:31Speaker 1: you're if you're attentive, um, you know you should have
- 36:33Speaker 1: that opportunity where you you have to move. You can
- 36:36Speaker 1: do it really kind of slow and methodically, just like
- 36:38Speaker 1: you wouldn't tree stand where you stand and you turn,
- 36:41Speaker 1: you know, turn to make your shot. You're still moving,
- 36:44Speaker 1: So I would uh, I would say give it a
- 36:46Speaker 1: try and mark which one are you getting? So I
- 36:49Speaker 1: think I'm actually be trying to I think we're gonna
- 36:51Speaker 1: try the Kestral, and then I'm also trying this new company.
- 36:54Speaker 1: It's called Tethered. Um so I think I'm gonna be
- 36:58Speaker 1: trying to model of both and and seeing which one
- 37:01Speaker 1: I like best and see what works. Yeah. There, I
- 37:05Speaker 1: know a couple of the fellows that are we're involved
- 37:09Speaker 1: in developing the Mantis the tether from the Tethered company,
- 37:13Speaker 1: and uh they there's some good hunters and knowledgeable guys,
- 37:18Speaker 1: and I'm really looking forward to checking that one out myself,
- 37:21Speaker 1: to be honest. Yeah, you know, it's been I've been
- 37:24Speaker 1: intrigued with saddles for a long time, probably ever since
- 37:26Speaker 1: I started reading Eberhart's books. Um but but yeah, I
- 37:30Speaker 1: had some of the same concerns Dan had had concerns
- 37:32Speaker 1: about how do you film with that? Um but but
- 37:36Speaker 1: with all you know, like the public land or different
- 37:38Speaker 1: kind of mobile hunting that I'm doing these days, it
- 37:41Speaker 1: just seems so nice to not have to hauler stand
- 37:44Speaker 1: and with it, you you know, just have this this
- 37:46Speaker 1: thing you're wearing, walk in there, throw up some steps
- 37:49Speaker 1: and there you go. I mean, that's that's really peeling.
- 37:52Speaker 1: So Yeah, that was really nice down in the southern
- 37:55Speaker 1: Ohio and those big hills and you know, the big
- 37:59Speaker 1: woods setting with the kills and you're walking in you know,
- 38:01Speaker 1: there's a there's one one spot that I really like
- 38:06Speaker 1: that's a mile and three quarters in and it's it's
- 38:09Speaker 1: nice to wear settle and not bringing that whole a
- 38:11Speaker 1: lone wolf set up in five sticks. Yeah. So yeah, well,
- 38:17Speaker 1: I'll I'll be reporting back I guess later this fall
- 38:20Speaker 1: on how all that goes. But I'm excited. UM question
- 38:25Speaker 1: here from Derek. This is an email question, and and
- 38:28Speaker 1: this I'm kind of Me and Dan have talked about
- 38:30Speaker 1: this a little bit in the past. I'm particularly interested
- 38:32Speaker 1: in your opinion on this, Andy, Um. And then I've
- 38:34Speaker 1: got a little bit to add. But his question is this.
- 38:37Speaker 1: He says that over the last five years, I've missed
- 38:39Speaker 1: more nice bucks than I've killed. When I get to
- 38:42Speaker 1: full draw, I lose all mental control and can't seem
- 38:45Speaker 1: to make a good shot no matter how much practice
- 38:47Speaker 1: I do before season. I can put six arrows in
- 38:50Speaker 1: a pipe plate at sixty yards, all with a surprise
- 38:53Speaker 1: release when practicing, But then I've missed bucks cleanly at
- 38:56Speaker 1: less than thirty yards, so something needs to be done.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I've always consider are going to a back tension release
- 39:01Speaker 1: to help force me to aim and not have to
- 39:03Speaker 1: worry about punching the trigger. UM. People tell me all
- 39:05Speaker 1: the time though, that it won't work. But then I
- 39:08Speaker 1: listened to podcast one which is which end quote. That's
- 39:12Speaker 1: a podcast we did with Joel Turner talking about this
- 39:15Speaker 1: different kind of shot sequence that helps you deal with
- 39:18Speaker 1: tire panic. Now back to his question, He then says,
- 39:21Speaker 1: and you mentioned how you know other hunters who say
- 39:23Speaker 1: they can get a back tension release to work well
- 39:25Speaker 1: and to go off whenever they want. UM, you might
- 39:28Speaker 1: not be able to answer this question, but if you can,
- 39:30Speaker 1: do you know of a certain release that these guys
- 39:32Speaker 1: are using, or is there back tension release that you've
- 39:34Speaker 1: shot that you believe you could hunt with. Um. He
- 39:37Speaker 1: then goes on to say that with the price of
- 39:38Speaker 1: back tension releases, I can't afford to buy a bunch
- 39:41Speaker 1: of buy a bunch of them and test them all out,
- 39:43Speaker 1: so any information would be appreciated. So so, Andy, you
- 39:48Speaker 1: helped me last summer deal with my target panic. UM,
- 39:52Speaker 1: and we we did a bunch of different things and
- 39:55Speaker 1: some of these things we talked about with Joel Turner
- 39:57Speaker 1: earlier this year, some things we didn't, Um, could you
- 40:01Speaker 1: could you just talk a little bit about what you
- 40:03Speaker 1: and me did and then and then also maybe speak
- 40:05Speaker 1: to his specific question about whether or not at that
- 40:08Speaker 1: tension releases the right option and what models you might recommend. Sure,
- 40:12Speaker 1: I this question hits home because I can relate. Um,
- 40:18Speaker 1: I from the moment I started bow hunting, I was
- 40:23Speaker 1: naturally a really good shot. I my first year getting
- 40:26Speaker 1: a bow, I got an archery leagues and I started winning. UM.
- 40:30Speaker 1: So I was naturally a good archery shot, but I
- 40:33Speaker 1: was a trigger puncher. No one taught me how to shoot.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I had one of those releases that had a ton
- 40:40Speaker 1: of travel in it, and you know, I just kind
- 40:42Speaker 1: of you know, hell I was. I was good at
- 40:44Speaker 1: holding the pin on the target or close and making
- 40:47Speaker 1: accurate shots. But come to find out, you know, as
- 40:51Speaker 1: my hunting career went on, I experienced a lot of
- 40:54Speaker 1: the same things that that this guy did. Um. You know,
- 40:58Speaker 1: I didn't miss a lot of deer, but I put
- 41:00Speaker 1: a lot of bad shots on der um shots that
- 41:04Speaker 1: you know, in practice, like he said, I could stack arrows,
- 41:08Speaker 1: you know, You're shooting laser beams all sun all summer.
- 41:10Speaker 1: You feel great, and then big buck walks out in.
- 41:13Speaker 1: You know you kind of you kind of come on glued.
- 41:16Speaker 1: You make a terrible shot, and you know, half the
- 41:19Speaker 1: time you don't even remember what happened. You know, I
- 41:21Speaker 1: wasn't really in control of my shot, but I didn't
- 41:25Speaker 1: have anybody to teach me. I thought what I was
- 41:27Speaker 1: doing is UH was the right thing. And you know,
- 41:30Speaker 1: they don't teach you that really at the archery shops.
- 41:33Speaker 1: You know, you go in, you get a bowl, they
- 41:34Speaker 1: set you up, they give you a trigger, you know,
- 41:36Speaker 1: index trigger at lease, and send you on your way.
- 41:39Speaker 1: So it usually UH for the majority of people, UM,
- 41:45Speaker 1: myself included. UM, if you end up shooting a lot
- 41:49Speaker 1: and hunting a lot, it ends up leading to some
- 41:52Speaker 1: form of target panic. UM. And I identified mine about
- 41:57Speaker 1: ten years ago. UM. And then and I did kind
- 42:01Speaker 1: of the research and found, you know, some people that
- 42:05Speaker 1: kind of went through those same situations. I listened to
- 42:08Speaker 1: you know, John Dudley, and there's a couple of guys,
- 42:10Speaker 1: a couple of really good archers on archery talk that
- 42:13Speaker 1: that helped me out. And UH, I did the work
- 42:16Speaker 1: to beat target panic. And you know, it was the
- 42:20Speaker 1: best thing I've ever done, because ever did as far
- 42:22Speaker 1: as archery, because I loved archery. But I found it
- 42:26Speaker 1: so frustrating. Um. You know that. I it's almost exacerbates
- 42:32Speaker 1: itself when you you start feeling that flinch and that
- 42:35Speaker 1: that punching that I want. I gotta go now, I
- 42:37Speaker 1: gotta do it now when that pin hits the target.
- 42:41Speaker 1: So you practice more, You're like, oh God, I gotta
- 42:43Speaker 1: get past this. I gotta beat this. So you focus
- 42:45Speaker 1: more and it it just makes it worse. You're actually
- 42:48Speaker 1: compounding the issue. So I went through the whole thing.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Uh So I totally understand UM. And I think he
- 42:58Speaker 1: mentioned a back tension release. What I think he's talking
- 43:01Speaker 1: about is what a lot of people refer to as
- 43:03Speaker 1: a back tensions as a hinge UM, A hinge release.
- 43:07Speaker 1: When you see a lot of the target guys shoot.
- 43:10Speaker 1: You can hunt with a hinge. I did so for
- 43:13Speaker 1: a year and I made three phenomenal shots on three
- 43:16Speaker 1: big bucks with it. UM, But it's not my first choice.
- 43:19Speaker 1: It's a great one to learn the unanticipated release, and
- 43:25Speaker 1: that's what you're trying to achieve. You're trying to achieve
- 43:28Speaker 1: an unanticipated release. So it's hard to explain. I think
- 43:34Speaker 1: I explained it to you, Mark because I knew, I
- 43:38Speaker 1: know you're more of a techy guy, So I tried
- 43:40Speaker 1: to explain it in a term you know or are,
- 43:43Speaker 1: in a way that I thought might make sense to you.
- 43:45Speaker 1: But like you, I told you, I said, you know,
- 43:50Speaker 1: imagine that you have this pre downloaded app in your
- 43:55Speaker 1: brain that whatever you look at, if you're staring at
- 44:00Speaker 1: the bull's eye, if you're staring at the lungs of
- 44:03Speaker 1: a deer, whatever you look at, your pin is going
- 44:05Speaker 1: to constantly center itself over that spot. You don't have
- 44:09Speaker 1: to do it manually, It'll automatically do that just by
- 44:14Speaker 1: you looking at the spot. Okay, so your pinel move,
- 44:18Speaker 1: your pin floats, and but it will constantly keep re
- 44:21Speaker 1: centering itself, re centering itself over the spot that you're
- 44:24Speaker 1: staring at. So I had to get comfortable with my
- 44:30Speaker 1: pin float. Everybody has a pin flow. Levin Morgan has
- 44:33Speaker 1: a pin float. John Dudley has a pin float. Everybody
- 44:35Speaker 1: has a pin flow. They just have less of a
- 44:37Speaker 1: pin float. Um. And then what you need to be
- 44:41Speaker 1: able to do is run your shot execution independent of that.
- 44:45Speaker 1: So what what a lot of guys fall into is
- 44:48Speaker 1: they get these index releases. That one there's there's two
- 44:52Speaker 1: real common ones. Those really hair trigger those really light
- 44:56Speaker 1: ones that you like breathe on and they go off.
- 44:59Speaker 1: Those are really bad, they'll cause target panic. And then
- 45:02Speaker 1: the other really bad one is the one I think
- 45:04Speaker 1: you had mark is one that you had to squeeze, squeeze, squeeze,
- 45:07Speaker 1: and it like had all of this travel and before
- 45:10Speaker 1: it fired. And what what that does is your brain
- 45:14Speaker 1: picks up on that movement and you start to anticipate
- 45:17Speaker 1: because you feel that you feel that trigger moving, you
- 45:20Speaker 1: start to your brain starts to know when it's going
- 45:22Speaker 1: to go off. So what you really need to what
- 45:27Speaker 1: I recommend to my friends is getting something with uh
- 45:32Speaker 1: like a trigger that breaks clean. Um like it can
- 45:36Speaker 1: be an index finger. UM. I use the thumb release.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I also have a hinge that I use, um you
- 45:42Speaker 1: know in the off season because I think it just
- 45:45Speaker 1: reinforces an unanticipated shot. But those triggers that are adjustable
- 45:51Speaker 1: but they break clean kind of like if you had
- 45:53Speaker 1: a really high dollar rifle, you know, those triggers don't move.
- 45:56Speaker 1: You apply pressure and they don't move, You apply more pressure,
- 46:00Speaker 1: don't move, and then finally you get to the the
- 46:03Speaker 1: the amount of pressure that it takes and it breaks clean.
- 46:05Speaker 1: And that's what you want. So the way I shoot
- 46:09Speaker 1: and how I beat it, I actually used a hinge,
- 46:12Speaker 1: but um, you know there's there's there's other ways. Um.
- 46:16Speaker 1: But basically you want to get a release like that
- 46:19Speaker 1: that has a an adjustable trigger. I like, especially when
- 46:23Speaker 1: I'm training trying to beat target panic, I like to
- 46:26Speaker 1: set it heavy so that you can load up on
- 46:28Speaker 1: that trigger. There's no fear of it going off because
- 46:31Speaker 1: it's heavy. You can wrap your finger around, get it
- 46:34Speaker 1: deep in that knuckle if if I'm talking about an
- 46:36Speaker 1: index figure here. And then, like I said, you stare
- 46:40Speaker 1: at your spot. You stare at your bull's eye, you
- 46:43Speaker 1: stare at your deer's vitals, your three D target, whatever,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and let your pin float. You gotta get comfortable with
- 46:50Speaker 1: the pin float. The pin float is normal. That that's
- 46:52Speaker 1: not bad. The pin float is good. There's things you
- 46:56Speaker 1: can do to minimize your pin float, but you can't
- 46:58Speaker 1: let that freak you out. Just keep staring at the spot,
- 47:01Speaker 1: apply pressure, and then what I do is I squeeze
- 47:04Speaker 1: my back muscle. So I pulled through. I imagine like
- 47:07Speaker 1: my release hand or my release arm elbow. I imagine
- 47:13Speaker 1: myself trying to pull straight back and touch it to
- 47:17Speaker 1: like a door or a wall or something like two
- 47:20Speaker 1: inches behind it. There's obviously nothing there, but that's what
- 47:23Speaker 1: I imagine. I pull pull pull. I don't squeeze my
- 47:26Speaker 1: finger on my thumb. Release, I don't squeeze my thumb.
- 47:30Speaker 1: They don't move. It's preloaded, and then I just pull
- 47:33Speaker 1: pull pull applies pressure and it builds pressure until the
- 47:36Speaker 1: shot breaks. And its the first time you do it,
- 47:39Speaker 1: it's like, whoa. I remember seeing your face my first time.
- 47:43Speaker 1: You were like you kind of like your whole body
- 47:45Speaker 1: come bulsed. You know. It's like because yeah, because you
- 47:49Speaker 1: didn't have you you let go of that control. Um
- 47:53Speaker 1: so what But after you do it, you do it
- 47:57Speaker 1: over and over. And that's why people say, you know,
- 47:59Speaker 1: blind veiling as a really good drill. It is is
- 48:01Speaker 1: because you're getting used to that surprise release. You're just pulling, pulling, pulling.
- 48:06Speaker 1: The shot goes and all you were focusing on was
- 48:12Speaker 1: staring at the spot and pulling through. Um, it's it's
- 48:16Speaker 1: it's it's simple, but it takes time, especially for someone
- 48:21Speaker 1: that's gone through years and years and years of doing
- 48:25Speaker 1: it wrong, like I spent about I spent a good
- 48:29Speaker 1: six to eight weeks. I had a bag target in
- 48:32Speaker 1: my living room, and you know, I put my daughter
- 48:35Speaker 1: down for bed, and I would just hammer that thing
- 48:38Speaker 1: and over and over and over. And I told myself
- 48:40Speaker 1: from the first day, I'm never gonna squeeze my thumb.
- 48:45Speaker 1: I'm never gonna squeeze my index finger again. I'm gonna
- 48:48Speaker 1: hook it around, I'm gonna preload it and then it
- 48:51Speaker 1: won't move. The only movement is me squeezing my back muscles.
- 48:54Speaker 1: It's pulling, pulling, pulling with my really sarm with my
- 49:00Speaker 1: back muscles and building that pressure until the shot breaks.
- 49:04Speaker 1: So it's it's, uh, that's how I did it. You
- 49:08Speaker 1: can still do it by squeezing the trigger, but I
- 49:10Speaker 1: think guys run into it. I think target panic. It's
- 49:14Speaker 1: a little easier to to creep back in when you
- 49:17Speaker 1: still do that like finger squeeze, like a slow, steady squeeze.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Some guys can do it. I have a buddy that
- 49:23Speaker 1: I shot with at the Total Archery Challenge, and he's
- 49:25Speaker 1: a stud archer. And that's how he shoots. But if
- 49:30Speaker 1: you watch my my video on the Total Archery Challenge,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you'll see a couple of my buddies and these guys
- 49:36Speaker 1: they shoot pretty good, but there's a couple in there
- 49:38Speaker 1: that they punched the trigger and you can see like
- 49:43Speaker 1: there's no follow through on the on the back end.
- 49:45Speaker 1: You know, it's a it's like a tense punch and
- 49:48Speaker 1: they were shooting good, but they if they shot more often,
- 49:52Speaker 1: they would run into those issues, um, you know, of
- 49:55Speaker 1: anticipating the shot and what you can What what I
- 49:58Speaker 1: found too is like on shots on deer. You know
- 50:03Speaker 1: when I when I was punching the trigger, the those
- 50:07Speaker 1: target panic issues really come out in high pressure situations.
- 50:12Speaker 1: So you get this big buck step in front of you,
- 50:15Speaker 1: you draw back, you set that pin and as soon
- 50:19Speaker 1: usually as soon as it hits brown, you're touching it
- 50:23Speaker 1: off because you want to you want to hit that
- 50:25Speaker 1: spot so bad. This is your one chance. You know,
- 50:27Speaker 1: it all rives on this and you've got you kind
- 50:30Speaker 1: of lose everything that you tried to focus on all summer,
- 50:34Speaker 1: you know, just slowly squeezing the trigger. But now with
- 50:37Speaker 1: this new way of shooting, which is unanticipated. It's a
- 50:40Speaker 1: very calm and relaxed way of shooting, like I was
- 50:44Speaker 1: shooting at those targets, those little tiny targets at the
- 50:47Speaker 1: total archery challenge, you know, at a hundred plus yards,
- 50:50Speaker 1: with no anxiety whatsoever, because all I need to do
- 50:53Speaker 1: is just stare at the spot, execute my shot, and
- 50:57Speaker 1: the arrow is going to go there. So when that
- 51:00Speaker 1: deer comes out and it's a high pressure situation, I
- 51:03Speaker 1: stare at the spot on the deer where I want
- 51:04Speaker 1: to hit. I put my pin on it, I loaded
- 51:06Speaker 1: my trigger. I let the pin float. You know, it's
- 51:10Speaker 1: it's floating, it's floating, and as I'm just slowly building pressure.
- 51:15Speaker 1: So that's how I do it. It's uh, It's worked
- 51:18Speaker 1: very well for me. I've helped a lot of my
- 51:21Speaker 1: friends kind of work through some things. Um and I
- 51:24Speaker 1: had it bad. I have a hole in my hole
- 51:27Speaker 1: in my garage window at the very first house I
- 51:30Speaker 1: because I sent a narrow through their my head target
- 51:33Speaker 1: panics so bad. This is a true story. I drew back,
- 51:37Speaker 1: I could I got I had it so bad. At
- 51:39Speaker 1: one point I couldn't draw my bullback without hammering the
- 51:41Speaker 1: trigger target or not. So yeah, and I've heard stories,
- 51:48Speaker 1: and yeah, I I became that guy and I drew back.
- 51:52Speaker 1: I put the pin on the window and I said, okay,
- 51:54Speaker 1: I'm not going to pull the trigger, and I sent
- 51:58Speaker 1: one through the window and oh boy, you know it
- 52:02Speaker 1: was that was like that's like as bad as target pay.
- 52:05Speaker 1: It gets right there and I was there. So, UM,
- 52:09Speaker 1: I would I would suggest Sorry, that was a long story,
- 52:13Speaker 1: but I would suggest that guy getting um if he
- 52:16Speaker 1: wants to stick with a trigger release. Carter makes some
- 52:20Speaker 1: really good uh triggers that break clean. They're adjustable. You
- 52:24Speaker 1: can set them heavy for training, you can lighten them
- 52:27Speaker 1: up up a little for hunting. Once you ingrain that
- 52:31Speaker 1: ingrain that shot sequenced in. Um, there's some other ones.
- 52:34Speaker 1: I gave you, uh my old trigger release that's a
- 52:37Speaker 1: good one, true ball beast, um, you know. But I
- 52:40Speaker 1: would stick with something that has an adjustable trigger that
- 52:44Speaker 1: breaks clean. And you gotta just put in the work.
- 52:48Speaker 1: There's lots of videos and John Budley has some good
- 52:51Speaker 1: ones on YouTube of some drills and stuff, but um,
- 52:55Speaker 1: you gotta put in the work. You gotta you gotta
- 52:57Speaker 1: develop that new way of shooting. And that's really the
- 53:01Speaker 1: only way to beat target panic. You have to let
- 53:03Speaker 1: go of control of you can trying to control that pin,
- 53:07Speaker 1: let it float, run your shot, exec executions separately. Yeah,
- 53:12Speaker 1: I can. I can say that from from your the
- 53:16Speaker 1: things we worked on together last summer, I could just
- 53:19Speaker 1: see that helping me so much already. UM, and so
- 53:23Speaker 1: so everything you said right there, I was putting into
- 53:26Speaker 1: practice last summer, all the way through last hunting season
- 53:29Speaker 1: and now this year too. And while I haven't actually
- 53:31Speaker 1: shot at a deer yet with it, so I can't.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I can. I can't point to an in the field
- 53:35Speaker 1: experience yet. Um, because of just the way my season
- 53:38Speaker 1: went last year. UM, I can definitely say that I
- 53:41Speaker 1: feel more comfortable. I don't have the target panic moments
- 53:45Speaker 1: that I used to have just when shooting, you know,
- 53:47Speaker 1: behind the house and stuff. I remember that I described
- 53:50Speaker 1: to you that sometimes when I draw back and I
- 53:52Speaker 1: put the pin on, and and one thing I did
- 53:54Speaker 1: a lot what you just said is I want I
- 53:55Speaker 1: would want to pull the trigger as soon as it
- 53:57Speaker 1: hit the bull's eye. Um. Or sometimes I would get
- 54:00Speaker 1: this like impulse to shoot, but I'd stop myself. So
- 54:03Speaker 1: I'd like should have this like clinch up moment where
- 54:06Speaker 1: my trigger, like my brain sent a firing wave that
- 54:09Speaker 1: said shoot and then I stopped, but I still had
- 54:11Speaker 1: this like jerk. Um. So nothing like that happens at
- 54:14Speaker 1: all now, and um even a stupid example. But when
- 54:18Speaker 1: I went to go get my most recent bow set
- 54:20Speaker 1: up um with with a guy. We went and got
- 54:24Speaker 1: arrow set up and got the new bow all all
- 54:26Speaker 1: set up and adjusted. We went out behind the shop
- 54:29Speaker 1: to do some long range shooting with it. And in
- 54:32Speaker 1: the past I probably would have I would have had
- 54:34Speaker 1: some nerves around, you know, shooting at fifty or sixty
- 54:37Speaker 1: yards in front of this guy who's definitely better archer
- 54:39Speaker 1: than me, and especially you know, I was using this
- 54:41Speaker 1: whole new shooting process now, so I was like, oh God,
- 54:43Speaker 1: am I gonna be able to you know, I don't
- 54:45Speaker 1: even practicing it it closer ranges up to that point, um,
- 54:48Speaker 1: because you know you and may have been working on
- 54:49Speaker 1: just kind of easy my way into it. So I
- 54:51Speaker 1: hadn't been shooting out to sixty yards with this new way,
- 54:54Speaker 1: but we're checking the bow and he was like, all right,
- 54:57Speaker 1: let's try out here at sixties. So I'm like, all right,
- 54:58Speaker 1: here we go. And and in my previous life, I
- 55:02Speaker 1: totally would have punched one off and just had a flyer.
- 55:05Speaker 1: And I did this, and I just stuck to kind
- 55:08Speaker 1: of my mantra, just you know, follow that process like
- 55:10Speaker 1: you said, and let it float and then just slowly
- 55:12Speaker 1: went through and pulled. And I didn't have anything like
- 55:16Speaker 1: that in Miraculously, I was bulls in it like like
- 55:19Speaker 1: a like a pro normally, not what I would have
- 55:22Speaker 1: done in that situation in the past. So that small
- 55:25Speaker 1: example of a higher pressure situation, I could see it
- 55:27Speaker 1: already paying off. And it's only it's only gotten better
- 55:30Speaker 1: since then. So I'm excited to put that into play
- 55:33Speaker 1: for sure. I feel I feel uh, I feel compelled
- 55:38Speaker 1: to answer the guy's question on a on a release type.
- 55:41Speaker 1: So I'm just gonna throw a couple. If he's gonna
- 55:43Speaker 1: stick with index finger, get yourself a Carter Quickie or
- 55:49Speaker 1: a Carter like Mike. Those are two good ones that
- 55:53Speaker 1: have adjustable triggers. There's no travel you can you can,
- 55:59Speaker 1: you know, confidently, hook your finger around that trigger and
- 56:05Speaker 1: loaded up and let your pin float on the target
- 56:08Speaker 1: and pull through. And if you have any uh questions,
- 56:12Speaker 1: called Forest. He's the owner and he helps helps you out.
- 56:17Speaker 1: He helped me out um when I was going through it.
- 56:19Speaker 1: And then there's there's three drills that will kind of
- 56:22Speaker 1: if you can, if you're willing to put in the
- 56:24Speaker 1: work and you're willing to commit to it. There's three
- 56:27Speaker 1: drills that I really like. And I don't have target
- 56:30Speaker 1: pantic issues anymore at all, but I still do these
- 56:32Speaker 1: three drills all the time. And one is you just
- 56:36Speaker 1: draw back and just a you load your trigger up
- 56:42Speaker 1: with your finger, your thumb or your index finger, whatever
- 56:44Speaker 1: kind of release you're shooting, put the pin on the
- 56:47Speaker 1: target and you let it float and just let it
- 56:49Speaker 1: float and you're you're in control of the shot. You
- 56:53Speaker 1: don't have to touch that off. You are in control.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Let the pin float for seconds. Tell whenever you you
- 57:01Speaker 1: know your shot deteriorates, let down, take a breathe there
- 57:05Speaker 1: for thirty seconds. Do that again, and do that times,
- 57:09Speaker 1: and do that for a couple of weeks. You know,
- 57:11Speaker 1: that's a really really good drill of just getting used
- 57:14Speaker 1: to your pin float. And then the other one that
- 57:18Speaker 1: you know you hear a lot is blind bailing. I
- 57:20Speaker 1: like this one because it ingrains, especially if you're gonna
- 57:24Speaker 1: go to more of like a back tension. People say
- 57:27Speaker 1: back tension release, they're talking about a hinge, but back
- 57:30Speaker 1: tension is more of a method. You can shoot back
- 57:33Speaker 1: tension with an index trigger, you can shoot back tension
- 57:36Speaker 1: with thumb trigger. You can shoot back tension with a
- 57:38Speaker 1: hinge um. So that's the what I was describing earlier.
- 57:43Speaker 1: The pulling motion, the pull through motions, so blind bailing
- 57:47Speaker 1: you get. You can take your site off your bow.
- 57:49Speaker 1: That's probably the best, or you can close your eyes.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Either one doesn't really matter, but you get a point
- 57:55Speaker 1: blank range drawback and you just don't aim at anything.
- 58:01Speaker 1: Just take your site off or whatever, so you're not
- 58:03Speaker 1: looking at anything, and what you're focusing on is the
- 58:07Speaker 1: pull through. And remember your thumb. If it's a thumb trigger,
- 58:11Speaker 1: your index. If it's an index, figure cannot move. You
- 58:14Speaker 1: load up that trigger and then it doesn't move again.
- 58:18Speaker 1: That's it, and you pull with your back muscles. Imagine
- 58:23Speaker 1: pulling your elbow straight back and touching it to a
- 58:25Speaker 1: wall or or something behind you, and you just pull,
- 58:28Speaker 1: build that pressure and you slowly increase of building pressure
- 58:31Speaker 1: until that shot breaks. And you do that hundreds and
- 58:35Speaker 1: hundreds and hundreds of times until that surprise isn't a
- 58:39Speaker 1: surprise anymore. It's just it's still a surprise, but it
- 58:41Speaker 1: doesn't freak you out. You're used to it. It's it's
- 58:44Speaker 1: just normal. Now. That's that's a really good one. And uh,
- 58:49Speaker 1: what's the other one? Um? Oh, the other one I
- 58:52Speaker 1: like to do, and I would suggest doing this one
- 58:55Speaker 1: after you. Uh you know, I do the other two.
- 58:59Speaker 1: First those are kind of the bread and butter, and
- 59:01Speaker 1: then the last one is I like to, uh set
- 59:04Speaker 1: a target out there, have my sight on everything. I
- 59:07Speaker 1: pull back, let my pin flow, load up my trigger,
- 59:10Speaker 1: and then I start my shot execution. But I try
- 59:13Speaker 1: to do it really slow. I think John Dudley recommended
- 59:16Speaker 1: this one and I started doing it. I really liked it.
- 59:19Speaker 1: But try to take as long as you can. Try
- 59:21Speaker 1: to do the slowest back tension that you can. So
- 59:25Speaker 1: what's happening is your pin is floating. You're slowly executing
- 59:29Speaker 1: the shot. You're letting it happen. You're just letting your
- 59:32Speaker 1: pin float. Try to let it take ten seconds and
- 59:34Speaker 1: it won't, but try to let it take tense. I
- 59:37Speaker 1: just slow, slow, gradual increase and pull until that shot breaks.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Try to slow the process down so that you get
- 59:44Speaker 1: to the point or that's not freaking you out anymore,
- 59:47Speaker 1: that's just normal. That's you and control the shot. You
- 59:50Speaker 1: can run that shot execution fast. On a quick shot
- 59:53Speaker 1: on an animal, you just pull quicker, you pull through
- 59:57Speaker 1: a little quicker. You can run it slow if you
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: you know, if if you're doing this drill. But typically
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: you want to keep your timing, you know, fairly consistent,
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: like you know in a hunting situation. But these are
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: those are great drills to kind of just get used
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: to that unanticipated release and that that that's the way
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: I was able to beat target panic. Yeah, those are
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: those are helpful for me for sure. Damn you. Um,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: I don't know if you want to talk about this
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: or not, but I saw you post something on social
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: media and I haven't got to ask you about it yet.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: You had a little bit of a bow mishap that
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I that I can't not have us talk about real quick.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: What happened, man, dude, I straight up, straight up dry
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: fired my bow. Did this happen? So? I was I
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: was shooting some arrows at a at an archery shop,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: and he went back and he um put in a
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: d loop. He put in a peep site and he
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: um made some adjustments to the bow. Um, I shot
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: one arrow out of it. And I have a routine
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: right where I always kind of touched the peep and
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: then I draw back, I anchor um and then I
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: you know, pull the trigger or whatever, and so the
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: because the peep site wasn't served in yet, I I
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: drew all, I adjusted the peep sites, I drew back,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I anchored my you know, my kisser button. I looked
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: through to make sure it was all right, and just
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: subconsciously followed through with that shot sequence without an arrow
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: in it. And yeah, once snapped cam broke and so
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: I got replacement parts coming, uh and I need to
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: get back to the archery shop of them fix it.
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: And uh So it was just one of those dumbass
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: moments that Um, I you know, first time ever in
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: twenty some years of shooting archery, I've ever dry fire
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: to bow or anything like that. And it's embarrassing. But
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I was gonna say, that's gotta be nice being in
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: the pro shop and being that guy. You know, you're
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the guy with that podcast network. And here's the funny
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: party is he goes this happens all the time. People
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: dry fire bows all the time, and um, even just
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: people reaching out to me after I made it, made
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: it public that I did this, people are like, hey, man,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: don't beat yourself up on it. Um, I did it
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: last year, or I did it two years ago, or man,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: I did it yesterday or whatever. So um made me
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: feel a little bit better. But still it just kind
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: of it just kind of. I think people take archery
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: equipment for granted because it's a bow, but the amount
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: of energy and power that those things can generate is ridiculous.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: And I have a big scar or a big cut
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: basically it's a welt across the top of my hand
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: to prove it. So, oh, man, that was a brand
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: new prime to right, Yeah, brand new, probably fifth arrow
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: ever shot out of it. That's man brutal. Well, Well,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: hopefully folks will hear your story and that will help
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: them all be just a tiny bit more aware of
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: not making the same subconscious mistake. Absolutely. Yeah, Okay, so
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: switching gears completely here. Um, we got a question here
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: from Scotty, and Scotty has two questions, so both of
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: these could take us in in long winding paths. So
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I don't know where this is gonna take us. But
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: question number one, do your chord sightings or deer activity
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: in any kind of hunting journal. I have attempt it
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: a few apps, but most aren't useful when trying to
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: pattern deer movements stands based on wind or weather. Blah
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: blah blah um. Excellent spreadsheets are pain because of manually
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: having to enter weather. But I'm looking for any kind
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: of other recommendations or templates. Um, I'll say really quick,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: what I do. I have not done a good job
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: in past years. I've tried to do a hunting journal
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: where every hunt or every day I record a few
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: basic things like what stand I was in, what was
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: the wind direction, A handful of other factors like that,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: and then what deer I saw and some information on
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: those lines. I've done that for portions of seasons, but
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: but never done a great job of following through. What
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I have done, though, is done a really thorough job
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: when I'm targeting a specific buck, so you know, like
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: with holy Field, now that I'm so focused on him,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I have went and created a spreadsheet documenting every daylight
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: sighting or trail camera photo and then all that data,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: so all the weather data, all the other information around
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: where he came from, where he was going, what time,
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: what was the wind speed, what was the wind direction,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: what was the bare mentri pressure, what was the temperature?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Was it a cold front or not? A whole bunch
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: of stuff like that. So I've been able to do that,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: and it's not too difficult to do that if it's
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: like one dear year after or or maybe even just
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: like mature buck settings. Um. But it would be hard
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: to do that every single day all the time. But
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I know people to do I wish I would do that,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: but I just haven't. Um, Dandy you you know, I
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: haven't heard you talk too much about any kind of document,
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: But have you started doing anything like that or thought
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: about doing something like that? Well? You you know this
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: app mark I use dear lab for for trail cameras though, right,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: But at the same time, that's how I'm basing all
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: majority of my decision making, right. Yes, I can, um like,
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: I will have my trail cameras in these pinch points,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: travel corridors, field edges, scrapes, whatever, and collect that data.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: But it's hard to use this year's data two kind
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: of calculate where a deer is going to be, you know,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: unless you're in the stand, right, So if you're in
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the stand and you see a buck, that's easy. You
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: can make that move right then and there. However, all
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: the all the trail camera pictures that I'm using previously
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: through previous seasons, I can use that data to help
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: me forecast deer movement for the next year. So it's like, Okay,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: well I have a northwest wind and I have it
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: on this day or this moon phase or this barre
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: metric pressure or whatever. Then I can say, well, I can,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: you know, do my sort. You know that you can.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: You're able to sort all that data and you can say, well,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: this tree stand or this trail camera location, which is
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: pretty much represents uh for me the way I use it,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: represents a tree stand location. You you are able to
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: forecast your movement and look for the best possible tree
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: stand location for those conditions. Yeah, yeah, I love that
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: app for the trail camera thing. I wish you could.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I wish you could just add like the actual sighting
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: in there too. And you I know, actually some guys
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: have emailed me and said that they just kind of
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: fudget like they'll upload a trail camera photo that's actually
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: not of a buck. But they'll just like title it
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: or something like sighting on this date and then manually
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: adjust the time and date and everything to make sure
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: it's the right thing, and then it pulls in the
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: proper weather and everything. Um. But but yeah, that's a
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: that's a great tool. It I wish it was both
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: because it would be almost a perfect option. Umr Andy,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: what do you do? UM? I I have a log
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: back from the very first year I ever hunted, which
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: was UM, so I keep like a like a little
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: journal basically, but um, you know I started with am
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: hunt RPM hunt all the hunt where at? Um? Then
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: I do you know, like the wind, direction, temperature, precipitation,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: moon phase, that sort of thing. One thing I really
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: regret that not keeping track of was the Barabetrick pressure,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: especially after listening to Mark Jurry. I was like, gosh, darn,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: you know, I kept everything except that one thing that
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: he thinks is probably the most influential. So um but
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: like cloud cover all that, and then obviously you know
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: what I saw the deer activity. If I do see
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: um mature deer, I kinda I'll mention how he was moving,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: what he was doing, was he using the wind, was
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: his wind to the back, you know, also trying to
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: build you know, basically trying to build trends, um, and
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: that's really helped me. Uh, you know, zero in on areas.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: You know, a lot of guys like asked me because
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: I I don't get to hunt a lot, but you
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: guys will ask like, you know, you seem like you
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: don't hunt very much, but you're efficient. And I think
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: that's part of what really has helped me is that, um,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: you know the different areas I do hunt because I
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: have logs, I can go back and see like, Okay,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: you know this area tends to hold you know, dear,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: if you know three and a half years or older,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: you know early in the season, you know, I've I've
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: I've noticed that now after hunting their six seven years,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: Like all my sightings have been before October ten. So
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: now I know that, you know, even though I have hunted,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: they're on and off, you know, throughout the whole season.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Now I have that area where I can focus on
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: those dates and to maximize my time there because I
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: there's a spot in the northern Ohio that the first
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: week of the season is the only time frame I've
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: seen a mature deer and it's been that way for
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: ten years. I've never seen one pass. I think October twelve, Um,
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: the crops come out and they just they just kind
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: of leave. It's a low deer density area. So my
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: point is I'm able to to hunt that, you know,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: during that first week, but then I have also other
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: areas that seem to trend more in mid October. So
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: then I can you know, jump to these areas that
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: seemed to heat up more during that time. And then
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: obviously your rout spots, um, you know, you're late season spots.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: So you know, it's basically I'm looking for trends of
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: when I see mature deer activity. But every once in
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: a while. It doesn't happen often, but every once in
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: a while in Michigan, you can, you know, you can
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: develop those trends on an individual buck. Um that happened
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: with my buck last year, um, you know, and then
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that really helps you kind of zero in on his
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: tendanc seas. Yeah, it's it definitely think I definitely think
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: that recording as much dad as you can will help
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: most people like I, I need to do a better job.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I'd like to be keeping a journal like you are
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: um or at least doing something like the trail camera
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: tool like deer lab is that Dan's doing. I think
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: all this stuff helps you wrap your head around everything
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: that's going on. And I know there are a handful
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: of different apps for your phone where you can record
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: sightings and record different things, and I haven't found one
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: that's terribly like easy to use and gets the information
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: that I want in there, Like I haven't. I have
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: not found the perfect solution yet. I've looked at them
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: all and there's good things about some, and there's some
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: things I wish they change. I still haven't found the
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: one that I want to actually use. It's more effective
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: than a than a journal or a spreadsheet or something
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: like deer lab for trail cameras, So it's a It's
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: important stuff though. Um So Scotty's a second question is
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: about you know he he's asking for He asked for
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: a video, but we'll we'll give him a chat. Um.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Could you explain your utilization of the wind when you hunt.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I get confused when talking about enter entering, exit strategies
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: and hunting wind conditions. If we want to be downwind
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: of a destination, should and the deer want to be
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: downwind that's confusing. Um, So this is something that yeah,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: we talked about a lot. How do you balance how
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: do you balance your being safe with the wind but
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: also thinking about how dear are using the wind? And UM,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: I know Dan, you and me, I feel like our
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: own perspectives on this have kind of evolved over the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: whole course of the podcast to um for sure, So
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: do you want to tackle any portion of this to
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: start in? So it sounds to me like he's relatively
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: new to hunting or starting to get into the details
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: of hunting the wind. And so what I will say
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: is to think, like, think of it as ninety degree angles. Right,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: if a deer is gonna you know, walk north and
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: south and there's a west wind, you want to be
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: on the east side of that trail, so your scent
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: is not going to be you know, blowing their direction
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: at all. So you know, if the deer hanging out
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: in the on the west quadrants, so to speak, you
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: need to be on the east quadrant, Or if the
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: deer on the south and the wind is coming from
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: the south, you need to be on the north quadrant.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: So it's just it's just a matter of basically having
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: the wind blow into your face while you're walking to
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: your tree stand in hopes that the deer are going
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to be in front of you. You know, they're going
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: to be between you and where the wind is blowing from,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: so you know, and then as time progresses and you
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: become more comfortable with hunting, the wind and this is
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: where I'm at now in my life is getting really
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: aggressive with wind directions to where if the wind shifts
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: a little bit either direction, you're probably gonna be get
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: busted by where you think the deer are coming from.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: But just just remember that you don't want the wind
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: to blow where you feel the deer are going to be.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: I mean, that's pretty simple, the most similist, simplest aspect
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: of it. And especially if you're just starting deer hunting
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: and you're and you're not trying to kill a mature buck,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: if you're more focused on, you know, whatever deer you see,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: a dough or young bucks or whatever it might be.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: In those cases, I think it's smart to go completely
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: safe and just make sure that your wind so you know,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: like you explained, Dan, your scent is blowing a direction
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: opposite of where you think the deer are going to be.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: Now where this gets um a little more interesting though,
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: and I'll let Andy, I'll let you dive into this
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: a little bit more. But when you start targeting mature bucks,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: then you want to start considering how mature bucks are
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: using the wind, because they in many cases are using
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: their noses, which is their number one defense mechanism. They're
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: using their noses to make decisions about where they're headed
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: and to check, you know, to see if it's secure.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: So in many cases they are walking towards something a
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: food source or a betting area with the wind somehow
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: in their face or quartering to them that they can
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: check an area as they walk through. So then you
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: gotta start thinking about that. If I want to hunt
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: this place, how do I think a buck is going
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: to use the wind to approach it? And that's going
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: to help you determine where to be sitting. But at
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: the same time, you need to take that information as
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: a data point, but then also be set up so
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: that if he's coming in with the wind somewhat in
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: his favor, so you can still manage to have your
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: wind avoid him. But usually to get those two things
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: happen at the same time, it's going to be by
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: a narrow margin, like the wind is gonna be blowing
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: by a narrow margin off of wherever he's coming from.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: So this takes a level of understanding of your area. Um,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: you really need to have a high level understanding of
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: how a dear probably is going to approach, how he'd
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: be using this wind, and how you can set up
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to you know, not spook him, but at the same
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: time being the right place. Now, that's kind of a
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: high level idea. Um. And then two, the same thing
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: goes for when you're approaching a tree stand, back to
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: the very beginning, when you're coming into a tree stand
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: or leaving a tree stand, Now it just comes down
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: to making sure you're not having your wind blow to
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: where those deer are at all. Um. But Andy, can
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: you take things to the next level or I guess
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: say whatever you want to about this, But if you
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: want to take things to the next level when it
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: comes to mature bucks and wind stuff, I figured you'd
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: be a good guy to talk about that. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: I think you guys pretty much nailed it. I mean
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: what I'll I agree with Dan what he says, especially
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: when you're hunting kind of like a travel corridor. You know,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: you kind of want to be on the down winds
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: downwind side of travel. Um. You know, that might be
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: something I might sit like during the rut. You know,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: maybe a funnel between two blocks of woods, or between
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: two betting areas or something like that. You know, you
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: could have your have your wind blowing into somewhat of
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: a dead zone if there is one, or at least
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: an area where you least expect dear to come from. Um.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: But you know, uh, also like you know, like you said, Mark,
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: you got to think how like a mature buck, you
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: know what what does he do? You know at different
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: times of the year. So like during the rut, I
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: like to sit on like down wind sides of dough
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: betting area, So where I know that there's groups of
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: dos uh. You know, I I'll push the envelope and
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: get on the down wind side of that close as
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: I can without bumping deer out. But in that that's
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: an area that bucks tend to gravitate towards naturally during
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the breeding phase. So you're you're not only getting close
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: to dose which attract bucks, but you're also in the
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: the portion of that betting area where on that given day,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: when you know, the winds out of the north and
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: you're on that south side, that's bucks are going to
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: gravitate towards that side anyway to scent check that betting area.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: So you're you're, you're, you're basically just playing the percentages.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: You know, if you said on the east side, it's
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: you might get one because it's the rut and things happen.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: But the bucks that are you know, you might get
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: some young bucks that just kind of bust right in
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: and you know, our scent checking them. But the mature
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: buck will typically hit the on wind side kind of
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: on the on the edge of the cover, and that's
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: where I like to set up. So I try to
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: think more of like what does the mature buck do, um,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: you know during that time? That would be like a
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: like a a typical high percentage rut spot for me.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I have several spots like that that is kind of
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: more on the down wind side of like where a
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: lot of where a lot of dolls live essentially, um,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: you know. And then like when outside of the rut,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you know playing you know, how do I hunt the wind?
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Like if I'm if I'm bed hunting and to be
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: honest with you that the most mature bucks that I
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: have shot, I've I've I've killed some mature ones during
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: the rut. Don't get me wrong, um, I love the rut,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: but it seems like, you know, probably my four or
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: five most mature buck have come outside of the ruck
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: and typically for me, it's more like kind of early
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: season in mid October, and I'm I'm hunting closer to
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: where where they live, where they bed, and a lot
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: of times, you know, mature bucks will bed in a
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: certain area. The specific winds not always there, but there
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: are definitely wind specific beds. So you know there's there's uh,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: you know, there might be a buck betting area where
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: he hill bed there on a north wind, or like
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: maybe that's one of his beds on a north wind.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: So you know, you gotta through your scouting. You know,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: you can find those spots that you know, when you
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: get that north wind, you can hunt close to that bed.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: When you get that west wind, you can hunt close
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: to the bed that is used on a west wind.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: Does that make sense? Yeah, Okay, so it's it's I
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: don't want to say it's high level. I guess it
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: is high level. There's a lot of guys that do this.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: This is not new, um, but it does take a
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: lot of work. It takes a lot of scouting. It
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: takes off, you know, a fair bit of knowledge. But
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: it's just it just takes a lot of time. You're
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: putting in the work. You're finding dozens and dozens and
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: maybe even hundreds of these beds, and then you have
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: you have those to plug in, you know, in the
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: early season, in mid October, when things aren't heated up,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: when everybody's kind of waiting for things to break loose.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: You know, I don't know. I always I like the
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: rut because you see more. It's exciting. But at the
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: same time, I don't know. I I kind of feel
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: like my chances at certain deer kind of go downhill
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: unless I know for a fact that you know a
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: certain buck you know for years, you know, two or
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: three years, he's he tends to be in this little
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: side of this marsh and you know, during the first
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: week in November or something like that, and you do
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: get those trends. But I really like that early season
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: and even mid October. UM, you know, it can be
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: up and down. It's definitely not like lights out, but
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you can you can make more calculated moves, um, But
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: it just takes a lot of prep time and a
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: lot of preparation scouting that sort of thing. But I
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: will say this too, like you know, when you're hunting
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: a buck, you know in his betting area, Dan you
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: mentioned kind of hunting like an off win in where
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: the you know, the the winds kind of in the
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: buck's favor. I believe this is just my opinion that
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: the buck will move farther. You know, you can set
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: up further back or played a little safer if the
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: if the deer's winds in his favor, I believe, if
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: he's smelling that direction where he wants to go all
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: day long and there's not a trace, I think I
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: I do believe that I've had some pretty early encounters
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: and times of the year where you shouldn't even in Michigan, um,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: where the opposite you know, if the winds kind of
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: where he's you know, the direction where he you think
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: he's gonna go, and the winds not in his favor.
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: I've seen him. I've actually seen a buck in his
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: bed with the wind not in his favor towards the
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: food source, and he sat there literally till dark till
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I had to get down and I set up in
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: the stand watching him through my binoculars, and then he
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: stood up. So that's my opinion. I believe that, like
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: when the wind's not in their favors, And I'm based
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: in this. When I'm saying this, I'm talking Michigan, so
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: it's it's a little different. Um, there's other pressured states too,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: But you know, I believe when the wind is in
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: their favor and they feel safe and they've been smelling
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: that direction for a good portion of the night without
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: any um you know, sign of danger, that they will
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: get up and in the closer you are to their
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: betting area too, there's there's typically a you know, they
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: pick those spots because they're safe. There's there's typically a
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: radius there where they where they do feel comfortable getting
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: up and moving in daylight. But it might be steps,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: it might be you know, it might be a thirty
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: yard radius from his bed where he feels safe, or
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: it might be a hundred yard radius. It just depends
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: on the terrain. Um. You know, that's something that just
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: comes with a lot of uh experience. You know, different
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: types of train and different types of habitat and different
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: pressure and that sort of thing, and you gotta kind
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: of learn. You'll you'll learn how far you need to
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: push it and how far you can. And I always
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: tell guys to be more aggressive because when you're more aggressive,
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: you're either gonna do it right or you're gonna make
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: a stake. And if you make a mistake, good job,
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: because you just learned something. You know, if you don't
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: make any mistakes, you're not learning much. So mistakes are
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: good because especially early, make a lot of them, made
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: a crap ton of them. That's how you learn the
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: mistakes lesson over time. You know, I still make them,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: but that's that's that's how you get better. You gotta
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: make the mistakes. So I always say be aggressive. You
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: might blow it out if you do, you just learn something. Okay,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: next next time, you'll do a little better. When when
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: you're talking to a guy who is a pretty good
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: deer hunter, like he's been doing it for a while,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: He listens to the podcast, he reads the magazines, he's
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: killed a few nice bucks. Um, he likes it a lot,
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: but he hasn't made it over that hump to the fact,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: to the point of consistency, where you're ending year out,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: he's on mature bucks and achieving those goals every year.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: Is there like a one thing or two things that
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: you finally consistently like usually it's A or B you
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: that will help you get over the hump With most people,
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: is there anything that like jumps out to you? The
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: common thing I see with the guys that like, you know,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: our successful year in and year out, and and not
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: even just on one big deer, like usually on a couple,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: um you know, they're usually just they're usually their level
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: of commitment and time is is much higher than uh,
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: you know, the guys that aren't. You know, And I'm
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: not I'm not saying that that's bad or anything. In
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: a lot of ways, it might even be good not
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: to be that committed to deer hunting, to be honest
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: with you, Um you know, I mean there's there comes
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: a sacrifice with that level of commitment. You know, there's
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: family sacrifice, their sacrifice. Maybe with other things that you
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: enjoy doing. Um, you know, maybe you're not. You love
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: to fish, but you don't fish because you're completely obsessed
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: with deer hunting and you're devoting all your time in that.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: I can I can probably be thrown into that category.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: Like I have given up pretty much everything else for
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: the little time I do have, I almost always spend
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: it on hunting or archery, almost always. So that's what
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: I see. Those guys. They put in an amount of
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: time and they have a level of commitment that's just
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: um It's just it's above and beyond what most guys
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: even believe they can do UM or are willing to do.
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: Um And And I'm talking the guys that kind of
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: do it. You know, you can you can buy some
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: property and spend a lot of money and kill big bucks.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: I'm not talking about those guys. I'm talking about the
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: guys that kind of you know, do how we do
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: UM it does it does? It takes a um a
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: level of commitment and sacrifice that I don't necessarily recommend
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: to people. UM. You know, there's there's look at some
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: of the best deer hunters that we know. Dan Infault
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: will be honest with you and he'll say that he
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: regrets some of the things he missed, you know, in
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: his younger years with his family because he was not
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: willing to sacrifice his hunting. So not recommending that, but
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: that's what you see with with those guys that take
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: it to the next that next level, it's a it's
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: a level of commitment and obsession that just is it's
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: it's a whole another stratosphere. And I would add, I
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: would add one thing and uh, and you're kind of
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: an outlier because you traveled to a lot of different states,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: but you know you've collected your data over years of
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: hunting throughout those those properties. But a lot of the
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: people are close to where they hunt, live close to
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: where they hunt, and they are able to go drive
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: down the roads and glass at night, or do scouting
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: every day, or check trail cameras multiple times um throughout
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: throughout a week, where um, for example, once I got married,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: my time and being able to follow deer on an
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: individual basis took a huge dive or more more or
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: more when I started having kids. But I was on
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: the property less, I was scouting less, I was relying
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: more on trail cameras. And as we all know, trail
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: cameras are just a sample of what's going on on
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: the property. So the I think some of the guys
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: who are consistently killing big bucks are, like you said,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: dedicating a lot of time to it, but at the
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: same time able to scout, live close and be aware
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: of everything that's going on on the properties that they
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: do hunt. Sir, Yeah, absolutely, And and I a portion
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: of my hunting UM, I'll say, is is like that.
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: I I hunt some spots that are close to home
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: and to work that are not good. They're just plain
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: and simple. They're not good, but they get me out
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: hunting um. And you know, every once in a while
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: I can turn up a good bucket at those spots.
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: So I'm able to hunt more by having a few
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: of those spots close to home. And yes, I'm sacrificing
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: quality um for the sake of just being able to
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: go out and hunt. I still hunt them smart and
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: I still look for, you know, a buck that I'm
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: interested in. But you know, I'll lower my standards some
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: and my out of state trips are always short, so
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: you know, I shoot nice I've shot some nice deer.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: But I'm not that guy that's gonna say, you know,
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: I have to shoot a five year old one sixty.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I'm not that guy. I'm not UM. When I go
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: on those trips. I want a meaningful experience. I want
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: a nice hunt. And if you know, if it ends
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: with me shooting a nice deer with my boat, I'm
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: happy that's it. And you know I I used to
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: fall into that that category that you are. You kind
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: of compare to other you compare yourself to other guys
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: like gosh, you know he has you know, he has
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: all these leases, or he goes on these outfitted hunts,
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: or you know, he's got this huge wall of you know,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: one eighties and you know this guy lives in Kansas,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: and you know I used to kind of fall into that,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: and it really just it made me more cynical and
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: ruins the experience. What's that It ruins the experience? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: exactly exactly. And and it's you gotta remember, hunting is
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: in a competition everybody. It's not a level playing field.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: You you work with what you can do. You can
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: do more if you're willing to sacrifice more, um and
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: just be happy with you got nobody. No, nobody is
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: going to care what your wall looks like when you die, right,
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: nobody's gonna care. So really, like, go out and just
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: have some cool experiences, you know, go out and have fun.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Shoot a nice dear. You know, I comes by and
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: you're in North Dakota and it's a three and a
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: half year old buck and you want to shoot him.
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: Shoot him. He's a that's a nice dear. You just
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: had an epic hunt with an epic view on a
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: suite road trip, you know what I mean. Like, I
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: don't know, I kind of switched gears on that a
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: long time ago. And you know, I'm I don't compare
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: myself to anybody else. It's just it's it does. It
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: ruins the experience, and just it makes you kind of
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: a grumpy hunter. So you just kind of do your
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: own thing, worry about yourself, and you know, does that
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: have fun with it? Yeah? Yeah, I'm right there with you,
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: and and I me too. For a while there, I
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: was so concerned with like what other people would think
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: about what I shot, And then finally got to the
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: point where it just doesn't matter. To your point, just
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: enjoy yourself, do it for yourself for your own reasons,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: and the rest of it will take care of itself. Um,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: So let's hop over to another question real quick. This
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: is from Joe via email, and he says that he
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: heard me and Dan speaking about washing everything and sent
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: as detergents and all that kind of stuff. But his
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: question is this, would it help or hinder to wear
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: those same hunting clothes when you go out scouting so
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: you get smells of the brush and dirt and other
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: stuff like that, UM on your gear. In theory, he
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: seems to think this would work, but does it actually
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: and UM, you know if so, then he also is
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: curious about specific scent control ideas for boots. He wears
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: them often all over his hunting farm. Um. Again because
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: he wants to get the smells of the environment on
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: his boots. UM. He's curious if there's any reality to
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: that or or not. UM. Andy thoughts on wearing your
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: hunting gear when you're scouting in stuff and if that helps? UM,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I do not. You know, if if I was scouting
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: in season, like scouting with the stand in my back
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: ready is set up at a moment's notice, yeah, sure,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: I'd probably have my hunting gear on. But other than that, UM,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: like what I'm doing now, I do not. UM. I
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: practice control about is to the point where I washed
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: my gear and I take a shower. UM. That's it.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: I I've I don't really take it any further than that. UM.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: My scouting gear, I usually wash it and sent free stuff.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: But I always figure, you know, once it's been on me,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: it's sort of contaminated. I don't I don't even know
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: that I believe that washing it really does that much
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: for me. Um. But in my mind it helps a
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: little bit. I paid more attention to and then to
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: my boots than anything um. I think that's the one
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: piece that is always touching the ground. Um. So and
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: it can leave a lingering effect. So I I take
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: more care of my boots than than anything else. Um.
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: But not to answer his question, I I have some
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: like dedicated scouting clothes which aren't anything special. Um. And
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: I just kind of keep those washed in the same
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: scent free detergent and just you know, after I wear them,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I'm usually if I'm scouting, I'm usually kind of sweaty
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: after and I washed him. Yeah, So what do you
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: do to to manage scent with those boots? Um? I well, yeah, yeah, UM,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: I keep him in a little tote. Um. I don't
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: wear them other than hunting. Um. And and then I'm
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: gonna speak on hunting around here, like places where I
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: hunt repeatedly. Um, this is this is what I do.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: Rubber boots Um, I'll I'll use some activated carbon powder
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: that I pour into them, um after each time, or
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: sometimes I'll use zeo light. UM. I don't know if
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: you remember Jim Brocker, Yeah, yeah, so so you know
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: him and I had a conversation a long time ago,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: and you know he's much smarter man than me when
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: it comes to that kind of stuff. So UM, I
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: believe that that helps. Um. I I can't tell you
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: the last time the dear smell my walking in with
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: with these boots, so that they don't they don't go
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: in the car, They're not on my feet while I'm driving.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: They stay in the toe. I put them on my hunt.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: When I'm done, I put them back in the toe,
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: sprinkle a little carbon in there, um, and then they're
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: not brought out again until I hunt again. Now. Uh,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: when I'm on a road trip, um, if it's a
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: you know in Iowa, I I we hunt some places
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: where there's not terrible walks. I'll still wear those and
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: I'll still treat them the same way. But in southern Ohio,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: I wear more of like a hiking boot. And I'm
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: there on a short term. I'm probably gonna sit in
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: the spot once. Um, you know, I don't really enjoy walking,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: you know, a mile or more in those rubber boots,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: so I'll wear more of a hiking boot. Sent Control
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: there is, in my opinion, pretty feudal. Uh. It's just uh,
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: you know, you're you're working up a sweat walking a mile,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: carrying of gear on your back, so you stink, you're
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: you're you're saying. Control there, in my opinion, is just
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: playing the wind. I try to walk where I don't
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: think deer will walk, and I try to play the wind,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: and you know, I just go for it like that
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: in those states. So what I've what I've observed is
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: that deer are much more tolerant of of human scentse
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Like you know, you know, the mature buck comes to
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: I smells like, yeah, he's still probably gonna bust. But
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: I've had, you know, in some of those less pressured states.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: It's just they just don't have the negative reaction that
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: they do here and and probably in some other states
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: like New York and Pennsylvania. I'm I'm assuming there, but
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: um so you can get you can get away with
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: a little more. Um. But I don't worry about it
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: as much when I when I have a lot of
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: hiking to do, you know, I'll just wear my good,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: my good hiking boots. Yeah, that makes sense, That makes sense.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: And I agree that the rubber boots, even the best ones,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: they're they're great for your regular everyday stuff. But as
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: soon as you start hiking more than a mile or
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: something like that, or like during shed in season, you
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: can be walking around a lot, man, it just pays
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: to switch to a hiking boot for a comfort standpoint,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: and just making it there in one piece. Um. Now
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: to the other questions, though, I'll just add I agree
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: with you on the scouting clothes. I wouldn't wear my
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: hunting clothes um, you know for any other reason except
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: for hunt really, And then I'm just keeping washed, keeping
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: them storage somewhere where they're sent free. Um. And then
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: same thing with the boots. I don't take things quite
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: as far as you do with the zero lite powder um,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: but I do keep them stored somewhere where it's not
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: you know, I don't keep them inside, keep out in
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: my truck or in my barn, um, usually storing a
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: tote during road trips and stuff. And then I spram
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: down when I'm going hunting. And then I also put
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: some spray, some nose jammer on the spray, some nose
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: jammer on the bottom two, which which I've found I
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: think helps them. Um. I've I've had deer come walking,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: mature box come walking right up my trail, almost like
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: they're intrigued by it, but don't really know what it is,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: UM or at least don't spook UM. And then I
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: pour some I know that dead down wind makes it.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I don't know what it actually is, but some kind
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: of scent absorbing powder I pour. I put that in
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: the inside of my boots. Um what I'm done, and
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: it kind of absorbed some the moisture and sweaty smell
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: and stuff I think out of that. UM. So that's
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: kind of what I do on the boot front. Dan
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: anything else you'd add there. If there's one product, and
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: I know it's this is crazy, what I do is
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: if there's one thing I well, I don't I'm not
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: a freak about sent control on like boots per se.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: But I use a lot of nose jammer throughout the year.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: And I walked through a lot of pastures, so from
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: exit and entry routes, I'm spraying a lot of nose
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: jammer and I'm spraying or I'm stepping in as much
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: manure as i can on the way to the tree stand.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: So um that just you know, I was told told
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: by an old timer to do that, and I've always
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: done that. If i can find a pile of poop,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna step in it. It makes sense. It makes sense.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: And scouting, I do most of my scouting during shed season,
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: So unless I get a property that is close to
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: you know, even when I get properties that are close
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: to hunting season, I haven't really scouted him. I'm running
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: a gunning so I'm doing my scouting in my hunting
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: clothes because I'm gonna be hunting. So um, my scouting
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: is done during shed season or or running gun style.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Yea makes sense. All right, quick rapid fire question here
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: before we have to wrap it up. Alex from Instagram
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: ask me me personally what I use for my plot
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: screens and I was answer this really quickly. I used
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: to plant a mixture of Egyptian wheat and sorghum to
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: provide this kind of tall barrier of cover around food
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: plots and stuff like that, or areas that you need
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: to access without being seen. This year I'm just landing
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: straight Egyptian wheit. I just bought some cheap Egyptian wheat
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: from the female, going to see how that works. Um,
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: I've heard good things. This stuff grow. It kind of
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: looks like corn sort of it. It grows tall and thick. Um.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: So this way I can have something like a food
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: plot even adjacent to a big, wide open crop field,
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: but it's feeling secluded so you can't see it inside
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: of that food plot. And that achieves a couple of
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: things for you. If there's you know, if you're within
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: sight of a road, this keeps people on the road
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: from being able to see into your food plot, keeps
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: deer in your food plot from seeing things going on
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: by the road. Or if you need to walk into
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: your property and you don't want animals in the food
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: plot to see you walking, this is another great way
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: to keep that from happening. Um, A whole bunch of
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: different benefits there. So definitely recommend the whole food plat
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: screen idea if you can manage land. That's what I'm
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: doing there. UM, real quick last question for you to um.
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Nick wants to take his hunting to another level. He's
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: been into whitetail hunting in Michigan now wants to try
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: chasing mule deer or elk out of state. His tons
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: of questions related to that. I'm not gonna have us
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: go through all those, but really quick. He's wondering if
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: we have any recommended resources, UM to help with this
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: process of figuring out how to do an out of
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: state hunt. UM. Anything I know both of you guys
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: have done a few out of state mule deer or
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: elk or analo punts in your case, Andy, any quick
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: tip or quick recommended website or podcasts or resource to
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: help plan that stuff. Andy thoughts, Yeah, yeah, for sure. UM.
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: It's it's that whole research thing out West can be
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: a little overwhelming. UM. There's two UH companies that I
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: know are pretty popular. One is called Epic Outdoors and
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: the other is called Hunting Fool. And they do charge
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: like a yearly membership. But what that gives you is
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: UH magazine, a monthly magazine UM that breaks down each
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: state and species and unit UH draw odds UM. And
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: it gives you access to their consultant guys who you
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: can call them as long as you remember you can
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: call them anytime and you can ask those questions. UM.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: You know, like you know, I don't want to hunt
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: mule deer, UM, but I want to hunt them next year.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: Water my options. You know, there's there's certain states where
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: that's just not going to happen, but there are states
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: where it can happen. UM. And it's that might not
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: necessarily be what's considered a trophy hunt, but it's considered
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: out West, they call it more of like an opportunity hunt.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: So they're there, there are situations or maybe your goal is, hey,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: I want to hunt hunternadians mule there they'll be able
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: to kind of build you uh uh like a program
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: of of you know, hunt here here, here, build up
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: your experience of hunting mule deer, and then by the
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: time you have four or five points, you can draw
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: this tag and Colorado and you'll be in the neighborhood
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: of adile deer. So those are two that come to mind, UM,
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: that are helpful. UM. And there's some really good podcast uh.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: The Rich Outdoors is a really good one that I like,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: UM on out West Hunting UM, Epic Outdoors and Hunting
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Full have their own podcasts also, and they'll have you know,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: species and and state breakdown. Um, you know that sort
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: of thing. I'm in the same ballpark, is uh, as
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: the guy that asked this question. I'm hunting meal deer
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: um this year for the first time. UM. I did
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: antelope last year and I'm doing an antelope meal deer
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: combo this year. So I'm kind of in that same ballpark.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: But you have to kind of have some goals. Um,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: you know what you want to be hunting. I mean,
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: if you care about size, you know you're gonna have
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: a different draw strategy than maybe someone like me who
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: just wants to go often. So well, I would I
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: would look into those uh, look into those two good
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: good options. Uh, Dan Man, I know that I can't
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: remember what podcast it was that we we talked about this,
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: but you know, dig through the wire to hunt podcasts.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: There's gotta be one. I don't know the number specifically,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: but um the uh, we we've talked about several times
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: about how to prep for Western trips. But um, as
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: far as shameless promotion is concerned. Uh, they're on the
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: Sportsman's Nation, Uh Western Big Game Feed. There's a podcast
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: called Rookies in the back Country, and these guys have
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: never hunted out West before and they're they're planning for it,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: So all of their guests are somewhat experts per se
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: or people who have done Western hunts before and are
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: basically giving the hosts of the podcast information about hunting
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: the West. So a lot of good content there. Cool,
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: that sounds awesome. Yeah, good stuff there. I will throw
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: in a few other recommendations. Go hunt dot com is
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: a website that, again there's a membership fee, but if
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: you become a member, there's tons of information as far
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: as everything you know for each state, for each different species,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: the different draws, the different units, actual really detailed breakdowns
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: of each unit in each state. I found that very helpful. Um.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: You know Randy Newberg's podcast, he does a lot of
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: good stuff around helping people get figured out when they're
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: doing their first odd state hunts. And his forum hunt
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: talk um uh or shoot what's the U? R l um?
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: I don't remember the U all but just look up
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: Randy Newberg's website. You'll take you to his forum. That's
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: another good option. Um. Yeah, all the other podcasts you mentioned,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: there's tons of great information out there. We have, as
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: Dan said, we've done some podcast talking about our own
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: personal experiences. So if you do a little searching through
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: our podcast archives, you'll see them there as well. So, man,
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: I feel like we need to wrap this one up
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: because we've gone pretty long. Um any any final words? Andy,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: you want to leave our folks with? No? Man, it
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: was it was fun and I appreciate you guys had
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: me on. It was a good time to be happy
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: to do it again. Sometimes, what are you going to
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: write a book? May? I don't think there's any books
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: in my future. Come on, there's gotta be something maybe
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: maybe maybe, you mean, Andy, maybe we'll sit down for
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: seven hours one day and I'll record you talk and
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: then I'll make a book out of it and take
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: the proceeds. What about that? That sounds that sounds like?
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: Sounds fair? Yeah, sounds really fair? Yeah? Alright, uh Dan,
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: anything we need to cover before we go? Science has
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: still not allowed me to grow the fingerback. So good.
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: All right, let's let's wrap this one up and that
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: will do it. So just our usual quick reminders, if
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: you haven't yet subscribed on iTunes, please do that. We
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: also would love rating or reviews there. It's a huge help.
