- 0:20Speaker 4: happening for yourselves of late.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It's been a pretty biblical couple months for sure. Yeah.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Do you want to tell the good people here at
- 0:29Speaker 4: Heavy about what's been happening for you guys?
- 0:31Speaker 2: And firstly, whereabouts are you guys from?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yes uh we're uh we're from the southern california region
- 0:38Speaker 3: um san diego uh california um we uh we uh
- 0:45Speaker 3: have been around for for some time you know um
- 0:49Speaker 3: we uh happened had the pleasure to get back into
- 0:53Speaker 3: the studio and record our second full-length album this past
- 0:57Speaker 3: this past few months ironically though uh We have a
- 1:01Speaker 3: lot of origins in South Africa, hence Warren Gibson, our
- 1:06Speaker 3: PR guy.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08Speaker 3: So we're well-traveled, if you will.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yes, yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Yeah, trying to sort out time zones between Warren and myself.
- 1:17Speaker 4: He does bands in the UK as well, and it's
- 1:19Speaker 4: just like everywhere.
- 1:21Speaker 2: It's insane.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Australia over there is always the hardest one because you've
- 1:26Speaker 3: got to count like 17 hours. You've got to count
- 1:29Speaker 3: like nine hours back.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Yeah and there's like daylight savings can be thrown in there.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Is it pacific daylight time or pacific standard.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Time australian eastern standard time at the moment daylight saving
- 1:42Speaker 4: time starts i think around october from memory i should.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Know like it only happens six months of the year
- 1:47Speaker 2: every year yeah and i.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Live on the border so the state like five minutes
- 1:52Speaker 4: north doesn't have it so it's like an hour behind
- 1:56Speaker 4: which is this where.
- 1:56Speaker 1: We're in uh where in australia are you guys based.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I'm based on the border of queensland new south wales
- 2:02Speaker 4: so like northern rivers byron bay gold coast area oh
- 2:05Speaker 4: i love.
- 2:05Speaker 3: The gold coast oh my goodness it's very san diego
- 2:09Speaker 3: to be.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Honest it is it absolutely is yes it's very very similar.
- 2:13Speaker 1: To coolangada i could live.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah that's great so my partner's in coolangada and i'm
- 2:18Speaker 4: down in cabarita beach just down south.
- 2:20Speaker 3: So that is the uh That is one of my
- 2:23Speaker 3: favorite parts of the world, the Gold Coast.
- 2:25Speaker 2: My local.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Super Bay, Kira, Durban. I've been there a couple times.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yes, yes. I love the area.
- 2:31Speaker 4: So you're a surfer, so you would know then. Yeah,
- 2:33Speaker 4: I'm in Cabarita Headlands, so it's.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Oh, man, Byron Bay is so, that whole area, Lenox Head, oh,
- 2:38Speaker 3: my goodness. I love it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Great live music scene as well, so.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think you're right. You're right, it is.
- 2:46Speaker 1: There is a good little punk rock scene over there.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Yeah, especially in our little pocket, like, even the, you know, quite,
- 2:52Speaker 4: you know, between, like, you know, Burley Heads and, say, and, like, Byron, it's, it's, yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 4: it's happening. It's very alive and well, so we're very
- 2:59Speaker 4: blessed to be able to do it all when it's
- 3:02Speaker 4: close enough to Brisbane and, you know, our local, the
- 3:04Speaker 4: Cooley Hotel, they've been getting some great bands lately, which
- 3:06Speaker 4: means I haven't got to travel too far as well.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's been awesome, so.
- 3:09Speaker 1: There we go. There we go. That's awesome.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yes, yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 4: So you guys got a new album out, which is
- 3:15Speaker 4: epic so what number is that for you guys how
- 3:18Speaker 4: many is that now.
- 3:19Speaker 3: We have uh so we have let's see our self-title
- 3:25Speaker 3: uh mostly eps.
- 3:26Speaker 1: We've we've uh yeah the the old the old school
- 3:28Speaker 1: of thought was uh i guess it's old but it
- 3:31Speaker 1: was new at.
- 3:31Speaker 3: The time was like like full-length albums you know 10
- 3:34Speaker 3: years ago wasn't a great move um uh from the
- 3:38Speaker 3: record labels advice uh you didn't want to like blow
- 3:42Speaker 3: your your your whole catalog on one album so we
- 3:45Speaker 3: So we grew up, we started Latex Grenade a lot
- 3:48Speaker 3: with just releasing EPs. So we have our self-title, a five-track.
- 3:52Speaker 3: That was 2010. Then we went into our FDR era.
- 3:56Speaker 3: That's probably our more well-known era.
- 4:00Speaker 1: FDR Part 1 was 2013. FDR Part 2 was 2016.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And that era, that four-year span, we did probably our
- 4:04Speaker 3: most touring totally weekly. we went on five, five to
- 4:17Speaker 3: eight national tours in that era that span coast to coast, obviously, uh,
- 4:24Speaker 3: Australia in the sense of going from Perth to Sydney,
- 4:27Speaker 3: you know, we did that, uh, you know, we did that, uh,
- 4:30Speaker 3: probably six or seven times, uh, really played the, uh,
- 4:33Speaker 3: college spring break circuit in that era.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So, uh, and then, um, 20, 2017, 2016, I met
- 4:43Speaker 3: Theo Kraus, uh, South African, uh, legendary band, the Springbok
- 4:47Speaker 3: nude girls producer, uh, uh, engineer. Uh, we met him, uh, through, uh,
- 4:53Speaker 3: the mastering house, Lursen Mastery. And they, they're the guys
- 4:56Speaker 3: who mastered most of Foo Fighters stuff.
- 4:58Speaker 1: And, uh, they, they sent me over his way.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And, uh, Theo invited us. He said, Hey man, like, uh,
- 5:06Speaker 3: Let me invite you guys out. Let me invite you
- 5:08Speaker 3: guys out to come play with my band in South Africa.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And then we'll record The Cage, which was our follow-up
- 5:15Speaker 3: to FDR Part 2. So this is 2017. And so
- 5:20Speaker 3: we go out to South Africa, us ignorant Americans over here.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I'll take the blame on this, but I did no
- 5:27Speaker 3: research on Theo's band.
- 5:29Speaker 2: At all at the time.
- 5:31Speaker 1: This guy's the coolest dude ever, by the way. It
- 5:33Speaker 1: was kind of like what we just did just now
- 5:34Speaker 1: two minutes ago.
- 5:35Speaker 3: We just started talking about surfing when I met him
- 5:38Speaker 3: and we ended up talking about surfing for like four hours.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Like which wave is better in the West coast or South,
- 5:44Speaker 3: South Africa has great surf also.
- 5:45Speaker 1: They do.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yes.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Took me out to J band stuff.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Nice.
- 5:49Speaker 1: When we went out there and, and so, so anyways,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I did do like, so fast.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Forward, he's like, we were like, Hey, will you, will
- 5:57Speaker 3: you mix this next album for us? And he's like, yeah, dude. Like,
- 6:00Speaker 3: why don't you guys come out and tour with us
- 6:02Speaker 3: while we, while we track and record the album. So
- 6:04Speaker 3: you don't, kind of kill two birds with one stone.
- 6:06Speaker 3: And he wanted to kind of, kind of help fund
- 6:08Speaker 3: the album in a way of, I got a little
- 6:10Speaker 3: small tour, you know?
- 6:11Speaker 1: So we, so we go out there, we go out
- 6:13Speaker 1: there and.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Uh, like I said, I did no research, nothing. I
- 6:16Speaker 3: didn't even listen to him. It was a total asshole move. But, um,
- 6:19Speaker 3: but we, the very first, we get to the airport
- 6:22Speaker 3: and like, we're just picked up by like chauffeurs and like, like, uh,
- 6:26Speaker 3: they take us to this like five star, like bed
- 6:29Speaker 3: and breakfast.
- 6:29Speaker 2: What's going on here, man?
- 6:32Speaker 3: What's going on? And, uh, anyways, uh, or we take
- 6:36Speaker 3: a sound check and we look and it's like this
- 6:38Speaker 3: amp theater.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It's the, it's a, it's in Durbanville, Cape town.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Uh, this amp called the quarry holds like, it was
- 6:45Speaker 3: a very big venue. We're like, why are we playing
- 6:47Speaker 3: on such a massive venue? It's like 6,000 people. And
- 6:51Speaker 3: so we do a sound check and we play and,
- 6:53Speaker 3: and there's like 4,000 people there. They're just like, they're
- 6:57Speaker 3: just like bang into the Springbok nude girls.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Like, So apparently this band, the Springbok Nude Girls, is
- 7:02Speaker 1: like the Pearl Jam of South Africa.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Like in the 90s, like right when apartheid kind of broke,
- 7:09Speaker 3: they were like the band. Wow.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And so anyways, we played like.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Seven or eight just massive sold out shows for them.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And it was one of the most incredible things ever.
- 7:20Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 7:22Speaker 1: To do it.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I have no idea what you're walking into when it's
- 7:26Speaker 4: like the country's finest band.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Ah, dude, it was like royalty. Yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
- 7:34Speaker 1: So we tracked The Cage. We tracked The Cage 2017. Nice.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And, you know, you move into the dark era, dark
- 7:44Speaker 3: ages of music after that into 2020.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 1: We released a couple singles. And we did release one
- 7:52Speaker 1: full length in 2012. yeah nice going green and uh.
- 7:57Speaker 3: But um up until that the pandemic really put a
- 8:01Speaker 3: squash on a lot of things we had a bill
- 8:03Speaker 3: yeah pretty bill with the south by southwest i'm sure
- 8:06Speaker 3: over with you guys as well.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Yeah it was it was a weird time it was
- 8:10Speaker 4: a weird time and day like i don't find just
- 8:12Speaker 4: talking to artists and i talked about it's all over
- 8:14Speaker 4: the world and there's, it's just, you know, schools of
- 8:16Speaker 4: thought pretty much around that.
- 8:18Speaker 2: There's either like it really hurt and like it.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Stopped a lot of things happening naturally, but it also
- 8:23Speaker 4: was like the birthplace of so many amazing creative acts
- 8:26Speaker 4: that people just knuckled in and collaborated with people that
- 8:29Speaker 4: they may not have necessarily. And, and just the stuff
- 8:32Speaker 4: that people come up with, or, you know, we're stuck
- 8:34Speaker 4: in a, you know, in our homeless, get in the
- 8:36Speaker 4: garage and like form a band.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And it's kind of cool, you know, because you're.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Seeing that now, the after effects, like, you know, what,
- 8:41Speaker 4: six years on, And it's just like, wow, this is a,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know, yeah, it sucked. But like for music, I
- 8:46Speaker 4: think it was like kind of what we needed. And
- 8:49Speaker 4: also too, like people were just thrusting over that live
- 8:52Speaker 4: music experience that we never got to have.
- 8:54Speaker 2: So yeah, it was like huge.
- 8:56Speaker 1: It's um, pause for two years, man.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I would have done anything for an overpriced beer and
- 9:01Speaker 4: a plastic cup at a shitty venue.
- 9:02Speaker 2: You know, that's like, I'll.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Pay 12 Australian dollars for this Guinness any day of
- 9:10Speaker 3: the week, man, whatever.
- 9:12Speaker 2: The price of beer is just crazy. That is one thing.
- 9:16Speaker 1: About Australia that's wild. You guys get taxed so hard
- 9:20Speaker 1: on your beer.
- 9:23Speaker 3: You mentioned something during the pandemic that was kind of
- 9:25Speaker 3: interesting that in a strange way boosted some level of creativity.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I think we went through one of those drinking too
- 9:33Speaker 3: much bored eras as well.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Uh with the band we were essential they were open
- 9:39Speaker 4: everywhere like what.
- 9:40Speaker 3: The fuck we went into the studio and recorded like
- 9:43Speaker 3: a six song.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Cover album in 2020 and.
- 9:47Speaker 3: It was just like ridiculous but we haven't released it
- 9:49Speaker 3: yet technically uh i don't know if we ever will
- 9:52Speaker 3: honestly but it was just like pop bangers like we
- 9:55Speaker 3: we we redid made like a metal version of like
- 9:57Speaker 3: bad Rome.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I think we did like a live in La Vida Loca.
- 10:02Speaker 3: We were just drinking so much and we're like, dude,
- 10:06Speaker 3: should we record it? You're like, Oh, that's sick.
- 10:09Speaker 1: But yeah, it was, it was a, it was a,
- 10:11Speaker 1: you're right. It was, it was an interesting time.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And as you move, as you move into this album,
- 10:18Speaker 3: this album is, I would characterize, without a doubt, as
- 10:21Speaker 3: post-pandemic darkness.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Without a doubt.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:24Speaker 3: A lot of the themes come out of the somberness
- 10:27Speaker 3: of the pandemic.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 1: On this album.
- 10:30Speaker 3: And a lot of the songs were written in 2021
- 10:32Speaker 3: to 2023. Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Yeah, because 2021 kind of was when it was in
- 10:36Speaker 4: full lockdown mode over here. And we were like, oh,
- 10:39Speaker 4: you have to cough into a fucking QR code before
- 10:41Speaker 4: you can do anything.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Cough into a QR code.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I was like, what the fuck?
- 10:45Speaker 3: Oh, it was... There were so many bad things that
- 10:48Speaker 3: came out of it, half of them.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And I do know you guys had it worse than
- 10:53Speaker 1: we did.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it was insane.
- 10:56Speaker 1: You had this.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Level of dark side of capitalism. You mentioned the toughest
- 11:02Speaker 3: part of it. We actually, one of our songs that's
- 11:06Speaker 3: on this album is called Your Pretty Life. Yeah. You
- 11:10Speaker 3: mentioned something that, a theme of that, and there's a
- 11:12Speaker 3: phrase in this song but it talks about just like,
- 11:16Speaker 3: like imagining how difficult it was for an elderly person to.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Just die alone.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Oh yeah. You know, and not, not allowed the family
- 11:25Speaker 3: could see them or just, just how, how alienated that
- 11:30Speaker 3: must feel.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I, 2021 was.
- 11:33Speaker 4: A huge year for me. I actually lost my mom
- 11:37Speaker 4: and my brother in exactly 30 days and it was,
- 11:41Speaker 4: This window of timeframe, it was April, March, April. And
- 11:45Speaker 4: that was before they had restrictions on fucking funerals. So
- 11:49Speaker 4: you couldn't have more than like 10 people, which fortunately
- 11:53Speaker 4: I didn't have to deal with. But just the thought
- 11:55Speaker 4: of that, like it buckled me. It was hard enough,
- 11:57Speaker 4: but healing from it.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Lots of good art. You know, that's how, that's how
- 12:01Speaker 1: a lot of us musicians cope with it.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Some of our best work is on this album. Yeah,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's awesome. This adversity is.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I think was a, was a, not just talking about specifically,
- 12:14Speaker 3: but this, the level of sadness and, uh, darkness that
- 12:17Speaker 3: came out of this really causes, causes you to, uh,
- 12:21Speaker 3: to dig deep into your artistic, uh, wheelhouse. And, um,
- 12:25Speaker 3: I think, I think that that, that is, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 3: sometimes you gotta look for things to hold on to,
- 12:31Speaker 3: but sometimes when it's really, really bad, the best thing
- 12:34Speaker 3: to do is just to channel it into, uh, to
- 12:37Speaker 3: a level of a theme of a song or, I mean,
- 12:40Speaker 3: the only, the only market now, right now, today, the
- 12:43Speaker 3: only market that's even in the States, that's even like,
- 12:46Speaker 3: like doing well is just, is just live music, like festivals.
- 12:50Speaker 3: They're as big as ever right now. We just went
- 12:53Speaker 3: to the Vans Warped Tour last week.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen that actually on their run of festivals
- 13:02Speaker 4: they have.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And I'm like, Vans Warped Tour, they're still doing that.
- 13:04Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I haven't been in 20 years, but I swear there
- 13:09Speaker 3: was 120,000 people there when Papa Roach went on on Sunday.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so cool.
- 13:13Speaker 3: That was wild, dude.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Vans Warped Tour never used to be that massive.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Like, holy cow. Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah no it is it's that's encouraging to hear you
- 13:21Speaker 4: know because there's that there's definitely like you said the
- 13:23Speaker 4: two schools of thought like you know there's people they've
- 13:26Speaker 4: been touring and then they're cancelling and and the whole
- 13:28Speaker 4: new festival controversy you know here in australia especially there's
- 13:31Speaker 4: you know been festivals after so many cancelled and like
- 13:34Speaker 4: non-existent and then the debacle happened with blues fest just
- 13:37Speaker 4: recently was just a shit storm but i think a
- 13:39Speaker 4: few of us especially locals we've seen that coming and
- 13:42Speaker 4: knew what it was like that um you know it's
- 13:44Speaker 4: the yeah to know that that's still happening and like
- 13:47Speaker 4: a this live music in general, I find it definitely it's,
- 13:51Speaker 4: it's healthy. Like I'm double, triple booked most weeks, you know,
- 13:54Speaker 4: trying to cover gigs and knowing that it's still happening
- 13:58Speaker 4: is just so encouraging. We've got a couple of huge,
- 14:00Speaker 4: big ones coming up or big sound in Brisbane, which
- 14:02Speaker 4: is a week long of, you know, fresh artists as well,
- 14:06Speaker 4: just being promoted through the city, which is really cool.
- 14:10Speaker 2: And yeah, yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 4: It's, um, Yeah, it's good to say it's what we need.
- 14:16Speaker 3: In the music industry, you have a couple of moving
- 14:18Speaker 3: submarines that have caused it, I think.
- 14:22Speaker 1: One of them is artists streaming.
- 14:25Speaker 3: They've sucked the living life out of all revenue that
- 14:28Speaker 3: can be made from music now, like streaming. So big bands,
- 14:32Speaker 3: it's kind of forced them to get out and tour again,
- 14:35Speaker 3: you know? And what they're asking these festivals, like these
- 14:38Speaker 3: big bands, is outrageous. These guys are getting paid several
- 14:42Speaker 3: million US dollars. It's because there's just nothing really in
- 14:47Speaker 3: streaming left, and so it's kind of moved the market into...
- 14:51Speaker 3: I guess it's kind of a silver lining in a
- 14:54Speaker 3: very strange industry right now.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Even earlier in the year, we had Helmet come out,
- 14:57Speaker 4: and they played in the back room of the Great
- 15:01Speaker 4: Northern at Byron Bay, and that was... It's not a
- 15:04Speaker 4: large venue, and it was fucking feral, but in the
- 15:07Speaker 4: right way.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I thought that was like a hamburger restaurant, that place
- 15:09Speaker 3: in Byron.
- 15:10Speaker 4: No, it's like one of the old standing pubs in
- 15:12Speaker 4: their back room. It's epic on old school.
- 15:15Speaker 1: What's that hardcore band out of Byron Bay? Parkway Drive.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Oh, Parkway Drive.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I just saw them, man. Dude, I really like Parkway.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I really like those guys.
- 15:26Speaker 3: That Warped tour we went to last week was really
- 15:28Speaker 3: fascinating on that same point because you have some of
- 15:31Speaker 3: the biggest bands in the world on the bill.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And with technology, a lot of the guitarists are going
- 15:37Speaker 3: direct into the PA now. So they just have like
- 15:40Speaker 3: one small cab on each side, one small cab on,
- 15:43Speaker 3: and it's.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Just small cab, small cab, and the biggest bands in
- 15:47Speaker 1: the world.
- 15:48Speaker 3: And, and, and, and it's just like life changing their performance.
- 15:51Speaker 3: It's just, and then you go to like Coachella, which is.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Like the obvious, one of the big festivals out here.
- 15:56Speaker 3: And, and you have some big EDM artists and there's, there's,
- 16:01Speaker 3: they have to, They have to dangle crazy light display.
- 16:06Speaker 1: To keep people there. It's because it's just not the same.
- 16:10Speaker 1: It's not the same.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Seeing that level of minimalism with the biggest bands in
- 16:14Speaker 3: the world last week was really, really special because it
- 16:17Speaker 3: really just shows the statement that you can't replace live
- 16:21Speaker 3: music with a DJ. You cannot do it.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Unless you have crazy light shows or crazy visuals.
- 16:29Speaker 4: I've never understood, like, the whole thing about crowding around
- 16:32Speaker 4: like a fucking DJ on stage.
- 16:34Speaker 2: It's just weird, you know.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Like, on a laptop, like, pressing buttons. I remember, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 4: laughing at people, like, the first time they'd ever seen
- 16:42Speaker 4: Fatboy Slim thinking it's a man.
- 16:44Speaker 2: It's like, no, it's literally one dude, bro. It's like,
- 16:47Speaker 2: great artist, legend.
- 16:49Speaker 3: You have this level of sound quality with EDM right now,
- 16:51Speaker 3: which I think that's why the.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Vibe is so hot. The level of sub you can
- 16:59Speaker 1: put into an.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Electronic mix is just so body rumbling.
- 17:03Speaker 1: You know?
- 17:04Speaker 4: That's what I was about to say, like, when I,
- 17:05Speaker 4: the first, um, like, full death metal, like, concerts I
- 17:09Speaker 4: went to, like, I was like, mm, death metal on
- 17:11Speaker 4: a school night, I've got a.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Cover, okay.
- 17:13Speaker 1: There we go.
- 17:14Speaker 2: It was, um, I Killed the Prom, Who Killed the
- 17:16Speaker 2: Prom Queen was when.
- 17:17Speaker 1: They played it.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Oh, nice. Great band.
- 17:18Speaker 4: And I've, like, walked in and I'm like, holy shit, like,
- 17:22Speaker 4: I get why people like this now.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Metal, metal live is probably my favorite genre without a doubt.
- 17:27Speaker 1: It's fucking cool.
- 17:27Speaker 3: The energy behind it is, is, is just, like, insane.
- 17:30Speaker 1: It's insane.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And what's so funny about the younger kids, the Gen
- 17:34Speaker 1: Z kids, they feel it too.
- 17:36Speaker 3: They are constantly asking me, like, what was it like
- 17:40Speaker 3: to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
- 17:42Speaker 1: Or what was it like to see Metallica? And I'm like, dude,
- 17:45Speaker 1: you don't fucking know. You don't fucking know how fucking
- 17:48Speaker 1: rad it was, dude.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Seeing Metallica at the Coliseum in LA and 100,000 people,
- 17:53Speaker 3: it was epic.
- 17:55Speaker 1: How do you describe that?
- 17:57Speaker 3: It's like trying to tell them, describe to them the
- 17:59Speaker 3: color The color red to a blind person, you know?
- 18:02Speaker 2: True.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I remember taking my youngest one, she was 17 then,
- 18:06Speaker 4: to Foo Fighters when they come out in 23.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Oh, right. And it was like, nah, babe. And she, like,
- 18:11Speaker 2: she was shitty. She's like... The minute.
- 18:14Speaker 4: She stepped into that fucking stadium, she just lit up
- 18:17Speaker 4: and she... so loved it yeah good mother you are
- 18:21Speaker 4: yeah i try you know sometimes they might disagree but
- 18:25Speaker 4: yeah no that was and i'm very much looking forward
- 18:27Speaker 4: obviously seeing them again because they're coming out again at
- 18:29Speaker 4: the end of the year so yeah but um but
- 18:32Speaker 4: again i think it was i think it was a
- 18:34Speaker 4: few fun is they recorded a whole album in like
- 18:37Speaker 4: dave's garage like plugged in analog i think it was
- 18:39Speaker 4: just because the sound was just they wanted that full
- 18:42Speaker 4: grungy grit sound which is yeah I mean.
- 18:45Speaker 3: The Nirvana drum tone from Dave Grohl on the drums
- 18:48Speaker 3: in Nirvana, it is about as analog. I mean, that's
- 18:52Speaker 3: the word. You can like to feel the tape on it, honestly.
- 18:56Speaker 3: The dynamic of the kick and snare is, there's some
- 19:00Speaker 3: warmth to it. That's for sure analog, you know?
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, definitely.
- 19:04Speaker 4: So with you, you guys sound like, you know, how
- 19:07Speaker 4: would you describe, you know, where you're what you might
- 19:10Speaker 4: sound like according to you guys, you know, everyone's got
- 19:12Speaker 4: a different opinion, but.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Oh, so, so we, um, in 2000 and, uh, 2012,
- 19:19Speaker 3: we get into a proper interview with metal blade records.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Nice layer iron maiden.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Yeah. And, and they, they were like, you know, you
- 19:27Speaker 3: guys are, you guys are pretty awesome, but like, you're
- 19:29Speaker 3: not really like metal enough.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And, uh, like, fuck, like, why can't you just like
- 19:35Speaker 1: change your label then, man?
- 19:36Speaker 3: But, uh, And then, so we go, we go and
- 19:38Speaker 3: meet with epitaph like that.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It was like probably the same month.
- 19:41Speaker 3: We had, we had a pretty go with some good,
- 19:43Speaker 3: some good looks at some big labels early on.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 3: And, uh, they look at us and they say, Hey, you,
- 19:50Speaker 3: can you guys just like fucking pick a genre, please? Like, like,
- 19:53Speaker 3: like some of this shit's metal, some of this shit's punk. And,
- 19:56Speaker 3: and so, so we cut some albums going green actually
- 20:00Speaker 3: was the, the full length. I actually, I need to
- 20:02Speaker 3: apologize to myself and my band for, for getting about
- 20:05Speaker 3: that album talking about it earlier, but, but, uh, That
- 20:08Speaker 3: was the album that we just said, we're going to
- 20:12Speaker 3: write a metal album. And most of the album, except
- 20:15Speaker 3: one song, is just pretty linear metal. Yeah. And a
- 20:19Speaker 3: lot of our Dired fans, very long songs dragged on.
- 20:22Speaker 3: We kind of went Tool vibes on a.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Lot of random shit.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Like long interludes. And there's some good shit on there. Ironically,
- 20:31Speaker 1: this is interesting.
- 20:32Speaker 3: When we first got the master in 2012 of that album,
- 20:36Speaker 3: I was actually in Byron Bay. Oh, wow.
- 20:39Speaker 2: There you go.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah. And I remember playing it in a rental car.
- 20:44Speaker 2: A juicy van or something.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love the way the Australians pronounce Mazda.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Mazda.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a Mazda.
- 20:54Speaker 1: My favorite thing in the world. You guys pronounce it Nissan.
- 20:57Speaker 2: And it's like it's a Nissan, right? Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 1: We had a Mazda rental car. We're blaring our album.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I was like, that sounds kind of cool.
- 21:06Speaker 4: You know what they say though, like to listen to
- 21:08Speaker 4: your shit in a car, like in a car stereo
- 21:10Speaker 4: is one of the best things to do because it's
- 21:12Speaker 4: like such a closed in space. Like I've got friends
- 21:14Speaker 4: who are producers and, They're like, no, put it on
- 21:16Speaker 4: in your fucking car and listen.
- 21:17Speaker 2: And it's like, okay, I get that.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It has to pass the citizen test.
- 21:21Speaker 2: It doesn't matter.
- 21:22Speaker 3: It just doesn't matter how that fucking thing sounds in
- 21:26Speaker 3: the studio.
- 21:26Speaker 1: It just doesn't matter. It needs to sound amazing in
- 21:30Speaker 1: the car.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 2: So we got a lot of flack for being so
- 21:33Speaker 2: cross-genre punk.
- 21:40Speaker 3: So we went back to our roots a little bit
- 21:43Speaker 3: after that album.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yeah, nice.
- 21:45Speaker 3: With the FDR era, which is when we did our
- 21:47Speaker 3: most touring at the time. Went out of the cage,
- 21:49Speaker 3: more punk rock, but metal when we felt like it,
- 21:51Speaker 3: you know?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah, because we can. There was some sick break.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Yeah, like Make Your Fade is probably one of our
- 21:56Speaker 1: heaviest songs.
- 21:57Speaker 3: It's actually one of our most punk rock albums.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Nice.
- 22:02Speaker 3: And then we kind of just exactly said, after Metal
- 22:06Speaker 3: Blade told us to fuck off, that was the only
- 22:09Speaker 3: record label that mattered. at the time and when they
- 22:12Speaker 3: told us to kick rocks right fuck it we're just
- 22:13Speaker 3: going to record whatever the hell we want and yeah
- 22:16Speaker 3: so we we just kind of went we we did
- 22:18Speaker 3: we did take some advice though we did shorten our
- 22:20Speaker 3: songs a little bit we stopped like yeah dragging on
- 22:23Speaker 3: our shit a little bit simplified a little bit and
- 22:25Speaker 3: and uh so so very uh but that question's always
- 22:29Speaker 3: been a funny one but but if you're going to
- 22:31Speaker 3: talk about our our sound you're going to probably say
- 22:34Speaker 3: something like you know pennywise style punk rock riffs like
- 22:39Speaker 3: rise against in some metallic thrash you know yeah but
- 22:43Speaker 3: um but uh and it's funny because if you're gonna
- 22:47Speaker 3: if you're gonna look at my growing up let's see
- 22:50Speaker 3: i'm gonna ask you this in a second so you
- 22:51Speaker 3: better be.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Ready but uh let's go with let's go with top.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Five top five uh bands uh man you listen to
- 22:58Speaker 3: how wide this is yeah without a doubt without a
- 23:01Speaker 3: doubt afi Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I'm going to go with AFI, Offspring. Yeah. I'm going
- 23:06Speaker 1: to go with Lamb of God.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I love Lamb of God.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm going to go with.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Kill, Switch, Engage.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Wow.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Man. Shit. And then I'm going to go back.
- 23:14Speaker 3: I'm going to come back to something like Bad Religion or.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Something punk, you know?
- 23:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:24Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I guess as a whole, our genre, just inspiration.
- 23:28Speaker 3: I mean, Iron Maiden's also one of our favorites. Yeah.
- 23:31Speaker 1: What about you? What are your five favorite bands?
- 23:33Speaker 3: Five favorite?
- 23:33Speaker 4: Oh, I've got so many, but I'm the same. Like,
- 23:35Speaker 4: my genres are so wide, but I mean, I love
- 23:37Speaker 4: the Foo Fighters. Like, they're just epic.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And I really, really love a couple of Aussie bands.
- 23:44Speaker 2: So Spiderbait and Grinspoon.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Regurgitator. They're probably all like the same like level. Cause
- 23:49Speaker 2: they're metal.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And they're punk and pop. I mean, I love hip hop,
- 23:53Speaker 4: like Hilltop Hoods definitely. So like there's.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Like completely like left of field.
- 23:58Speaker 4: So, and then again, like Bliss and Esso as well, like.
- 24:01Speaker 2: The Aussie hip hop.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Like, so, and then, you know, I also really dig
- 24:04Speaker 4: shit like, you know, The Cure and stuff like that too.
- 24:07Speaker 2: So it's, um, yeah. that's my my wide my wide
- 24:10Speaker 2: range and.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Oh that is that is like that's and we can't we.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Can't forget courtney you know courtney love.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Halt like oh yeah yeah so like that that's that's
- 24:19Speaker 4: my cool but i mean oh you know for me
- 24:22Speaker 4: to perform though like sing like i i perform shit
- 24:24Speaker 4: like you know rage against machine and like drowning pool.
- 24:27Speaker 3: You know we played with drowning pool.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah sick 2014 or so Yeah.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 4: And like my couple of tracks I've got like that,
- 24:35Speaker 4: it's like hard, like new metal, like it's hard and
- 24:38Speaker 4: fast and it is.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Limp Bizkit.
- 24:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 2: They're good. They're great. Limp Bizkit, they're cool. Cool as fuck.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I mean, it's, Yeah, I do. I just have such
- 24:46Speaker 4: a wide range. And, yeah, it's not so much the
- 24:49Speaker 4: pop punk, you know, the stuff. I mean, some of
- 24:52Speaker 4: it I don't mind. But, you know, I also love
- 24:53Speaker 4: Electric Cowboy too. Like, they're funny as shit.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Oh, dude. Electric Cowboy is so awesome, man. I think, right?
- 25:00Speaker 2: I love it. It just cracks me up.
- 25:03Speaker 3: That gym video that they have, that music video, is
- 25:07Speaker 3: like one of the coolest. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Where it all starts. When we say three chords and
- 25:10Speaker 2: a line. That's what it all is.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Yeah, well, look, thank you so much for coming and
- 25:15Speaker 4: having a chat with us today, Heavy. And hopefully, is
- 25:18Speaker 4: it planned to have a tour at all? We'd love
- 25:19Speaker 4: to see you back down under again.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yes, it's in the works.
- 25:24Speaker 3: We're actually working out some kinks with the release, but
- 25:32Speaker 3: I think it's long overdue. We released a single two
- 25:37Speaker 3: to three years ago, but other than that, we haven't
- 25:39Speaker 3: released even an EP or an album in probably five years.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Yeah, wow.
- 25:43Speaker 3: It's pretty long overdue.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's pretty long overdue.
- 25:49Speaker 3: And I think without a doubt, we will be getting
- 25:53Speaker 3: back on the road and jamming pretty hard here.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Get on down. Get on down to Soundtown.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I appreciate the chat.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, likewise.
- 26:06Speaker 1: It's always great to get in. To get like-minded minds
- 26:09Speaker 1: in the journey. Yeah.
- 26:11Speaker 2: You find your people. It's like a little beacon. It's like,
- 26:13Speaker 2: who do they know? For sure. Well, look, thank you
- 26:15Speaker 2: so much.
