- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Danish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Today we're talking about grandparents! Lucas: Yeah, we learned bedstefar and bedstemor before. Now let's get more specific. In Danish, there are words for your mom's dad and your dad's dad. Luna: Oh, like in some other languages? That's cool. Lucas: Exactly. So your mother's father is morfar. It's mom — mor — plus far — dad. So morfar. Luna: Morfar. That sounds sweet. Lucas: And your father's mother is farmor. Far plus mor. Farmor. Luna: Farmor. Oh, that's like "dad's mom". Lucas: Right. Now let's practice a sentence. Min morfar er sød. My grandpa is sweet. Luna: Min morfar er sød. I love that. Lucas: And min farmor er rar. My grandma is kind. Luna: Min farmor er rar. Rar — that's new. So rar means kind? Lucas: Yes, kind or nice. You can also say sød for sweet. Both are good. Luna: Okay. So if I want to say I love my morfar, how do I say that? Lucas: Jeg elsker min morfar. Luna: Jeg elsker min morfar. And for farmor: Jeg elsker min farmor. Lucas: Perfect. Let's do a little scene. Imagine you're talking about your family. Say: Min morfar er sød. Luna: Min morfar er sød. Lucas: And then: Min farmor er rar. Luna: Min farmor er rar. Lucas: Now you can tell people about your grandparents. So let's review: morfar, farmor. Luna: Morfar, farmor. I think I've got it. Lucas: Great. And if you want to say both: Min morfar og min farmor. Luna: Min morfar og min farmor. That's fun to say. Lucas: Now, you know, if Fexingo has been helping you learn Danish, consider supporting the show. It keeps us ad-free and focused on teaching. Luna: Yeah, even a small gesture goes a long way. You can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: That's it. Now back to family. So we have morfar and farmor. But what about the other grandparents? We already know bedstefar and bedstemor. Luna: Right, so bedstefar could be either grandfather, right? Lucas: Yes, but morfar is specifically your mom's dad, and farmor is your dad's mom. So it's more precise. Luna: That's useful. So if I say Min bedstefar, it's general, but if I say Min morfar, it's clear. Lucas: Exactly. Let's practice one more time. Repeat after me: morfar. Luna: Morfar. Lucas: Farmor. Luna: Farmor. Lucas: Min morfar er sød. Luna: Min morfar er sød. Lucas: Min farmor er rar. Luna: Min farmor er rar. Lucas: Jeg elsker min morfar. Luna: Jeg elsker min morfar. Lucas: Jeg elsker min farmor. Luna: Jeg elsker min farmor. Lucas: Wonderful. Practice these phrases, and next time you talk about your family, you'll sound like a local. Luna: Tak, Lucas. See you next time! Lucas: Tak for i dag. Vi ses!
