- 0:16Speaker 3: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:24Speaker 2: All right. Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:27Speaker 4: It is Wednesday here at Gillette Stadium and As always,
- 0:32Speaker 4: it's a turn-the-page game. This week, we turn the page
- 0:35Speaker 4: to the Buffalo Bills.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It's Eric. Eric. Eric Scalavino. It's Evan. Andy Hart. And
- 0:42Speaker 2: Brian Morey.
- 0:43Speaker 5: Oh, God.
- 0:44Speaker 2: You know I'm screwed up. It's Evan. It's Paul. It's me.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's Deuce. It's Matt in the booth.
- 0:48Speaker 4: And, yes, we are going to turn the page to
- 0:51Speaker 4: the Buffalo Bills because that's who the Patriots.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Are playing Sunday at 1 at Highmark Stadium. Oh, Highmark.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Brand-new stadium. We'll see how it is.
- 1:01Speaker 4: I did my press box food review for Jacksonville.
- 1:06Speaker 2: You can read that in the newsletter coming up.
- 1:10Speaker 6: So I'm looking forward to the assessment of the stadium
- 1:12Speaker 6: from you two guys.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 6: Because this is another stadium that I haven't been to.
- 1:16Speaker 6: I mean, there's now a couple that I have.
- 1:18Speaker 2: I haven't been to. The assessment is limited to our
- 1:22Speaker 2: press box.
- 1:23Speaker 4: It's, you know, visiting the locker room, you know, press conference,
- 1:27Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:28Speaker 7: How easy is it to get from the press box
- 1:31Speaker 7: down to the locker?
- 1:31Speaker 2: It's got to be easier than the old place.
- 1:33Speaker 4: You know, we're not in the suites. We're not in
- 1:35Speaker 4: the clubs. We're not, you know, hanging out in the concourse.
- 1:37Speaker 4: So and that's the main thing of any stadium. So, but,
- 1:41Speaker 4: you know, we'll tell you what we saw.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, media food.
- 1:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:45Speaker 9: Do they have, Jacksonville have anything special? Like they have
- 1:47Speaker 9: like gator nuggets or anything?
- 1:49Speaker 2: You have to read the newsletter.
- 1:50Speaker 6: That's in the newsletter, Mike.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I don't want to get already prefaced that.
- 1:53Speaker 10: I'm excited.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Local flair.
- 1:55Speaker 9: Like we have clam chowder here. I would expect some
- 1:57Speaker 9: kind of gator item down there, you know, in.
- 1:58Speaker 2: The press box. Do you ever have gator?
- 2:00Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 2:01Speaker 2: It's good. I tried it once.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Did you? Tastes like chicken.
- 2:03Speaker 10: Yeah, like tough chicken.
- 2:05Speaker 2: No, it actually does. Yeah. You couldn't really tell.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Meat.
- 2:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I don't think I would try. I think Florida needs
- 2:11Speaker 2: to do something about the gator population. Don't you think? Right,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and the snake population. Gators and snakes?
- 2:17Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Do you want to eradicate all gators down there?
- 2:19Speaker 10: Yeah, what do you mean by do something about it?
- 2:20Speaker 2: They have to limit it.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Maybe they already have it, but in certain parts of
- 2:26Speaker 4: New England, you have deer hunting season.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Because the population's high. You have to kind of thin
- 2:30Speaker 2: it out.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I don't know if it helps, but They need to
- 2:34Speaker 4: do something to thin out that gator population because everybody
- 2:37Speaker 4: needs to have now fences around their yards and their
- 2:39Speaker 4: pools because the gators are everywhere.
- 2:41Speaker 9: I thought the pythons were the big problem because they've
- 2:43Speaker 9: all like escaped and now the Everglades is just like
- 2:45Speaker 9: overrun and like there's like some snake hunter guy that's
- 2:47Speaker 9: like one of those shows where they go out and
- 2:49Speaker 9: you can kill giant pythons and bring them in and
- 2:52Speaker 9: get paid for it.
- 2:53Speaker 2: It's kind of my backup.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Well, yeah, people get them for pets and then they
- 2:56Speaker 4: release them and then they breed or whatever.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It's just madness. They grow because they have all these
- 3:02Speaker 2: things to feed on. Yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 6: To tell the Patriots are coming off a 35 to
- 3:05Speaker 6: six loss.
- 3:06Speaker 10: Talking about eradicating.
- 3:07Speaker 2: The Gator population.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Why?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Is something going on? It's my fault. All right. Let's
- 3:11Speaker 2: talk about the Bills.
- 3:12Speaker 4: And the first question I have for y'all is, do
- 3:15Speaker 4: we take anything from the poor performance of the Bills
- 3:20Speaker 4: in terms of five turnovers? Is that something that their
- 3:25Speaker 4: opponent did to force that?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Or was that just sloppy play? Both. Both?
- 3:31Speaker 6: You know, I like to partake in the red zone
- 3:35Speaker 6: while things are going on. Josh Allen had one of
- 3:37Speaker 6: those games that he has every once in a while
- 3:39Speaker 6: where he's a little loose with the football. One of
- 3:41Speaker 6: the interceptions, the first one, was a horrific decision by
- 3:45Speaker 6: Josh Allen. He just tried to throw it through a safety, 22.
- 3:48Speaker 6: I don't know who that is for the Chargers, but
- 3:50Speaker 6: I think he came up with both interceptions in this game.
- 3:52Speaker 6: The first one was really bad, and he had a
- 3:54Speaker 6: fumble on a run that he had the ball in
- 3:56Speaker 6: one hand like he often does, and sometimes he loses it.
- 4:02Speaker 6: There was an interception also on a deep ball that
- 4:04Speaker 6: was like a punt, and it was kind of a
- 4:06Speaker 6: very unlucky interception. It was, you know, probably ill-advised. He
- 4:10Speaker 6: threw into double coverage, but the ball kind of got knocked.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I mean, it actually hit DJ Moore in the hands.
- 4:16Speaker 6: And then it got knocked around and landed on the
- 4:18Speaker 6: guy's chest on the ground. Dalton Kincaid, I think, had
- 4:22Speaker 6: one punched out on a run.
- 4:24Speaker 2: And James Cook.
- 4:26Speaker 6: You know, we talk a lot about the fumbling issues
- 4:29Speaker 6: with our running back at times with Ramondre Stephenson. James
- 4:32Speaker 6: Cook has a bigger fumbling problem than anybody. And I
- 4:37Speaker 6: think he's got, I think he leads the league in
- 4:40Speaker 6: the last two years.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He had one early in the game.
- 4:44Speaker 9: Like, does it even recognize, like, Rwanda fumbles and everyone's like, oh,
- 4:47Speaker 9: my God, and they lose their mind.
- 4:49Speaker 10: No, when you're running for 1,600 yards a year. And
- 4:50Speaker 10: then he rattles off a 60-yarder, and they're like, it's fine.
- 4:52Speaker 6: There is a difference, and I think Evan's right. You know, like,
- 4:55Speaker 6: the production that they get out of their running game,
- 4:57Speaker 6: you're going to have some fumbles once in a while,
- 4:59Speaker 6: and I guess you overcome them, and the Patriots aren't
- 5:01Speaker 6: really getting the production when they're not fumbling.
- 5:04Speaker 2: But I will say this.
- 5:05Speaker 6: So you brought up the five turnover spread. One of
- 5:08Speaker 6: the things I've been keeping my eye on with Buffalo,
- 5:10Speaker 6: because they're in the spotlight, right? Every year, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 6: The Alex Bosh of the world are always waiting for
- 5:17Speaker 6: them to fail.
- 5:18Speaker 10: Can't wait for tomorrow.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And the Boston media is always waiting for them to fail.
- 5:23Speaker 6: One of the things that I would say would be
- 5:24Speaker 6: an indication that they could fail is, okay, you made
- 5:27Speaker 6: the move from Sean McDermott to Joe Brady, and that
- 5:30Speaker 6: might be an upgrade.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We don't know. It's new.
- 5:34Speaker 6: What I do know about Sean McDermott is when they
- 5:36Speaker 6: played poorly or when they had bad stretches, they generally
- 5:40Speaker 6: responded to them and played better thereafter. So I want
- 5:43Speaker 6: to see what Joe Brady does, and I want to
- 5:47Speaker 6: see what the Bills look like. I don't want to
- 5:50Speaker 6: call it adversity because they won the game, and they're 3-0,
- 5:52Speaker 6: and things still look good. But I think that's when
- 5:55Speaker 6: even more you need to have a head coach that
- 5:57Speaker 6: has his foot on the throat of the team. making
- 6:02Speaker 6: sure that they have not lost sight of the fact
- 6:04Speaker 6: that that was a bad performance. That's going to get
- 6:06Speaker 6: you beat. That was one of the Mike Vrabels, the good,
- 6:08Speaker 6: the bad, and the bleep that's going to get you beat.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 11: Right.
- 6:11Speaker 2: That's you're going to lose that game. I don't know.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Nine times out of 10, 99 times out of a hundred.
- 6:16Speaker 10: What was the final score in that game?
- 6:19Speaker 2: 24, 16, 24, 16. Yeah.
- 6:21Speaker 7: And they were down 10 to nothing because of the
- 6:23Speaker 7: turnovers early. And James Cook, I think fumbled on like
- 6:25Speaker 7: the first play of the game that the bills had
- 6:28Speaker 7: first run of the game. I had, I would just say, like,
- 6:30Speaker 7: I think that this offense has evolved over the years
- 6:33Speaker 7: pretty significantly. I call them the bully ball bills now.
- 6:37Speaker 7: Like they are a big personnel under center. Josh Allen
- 6:42Speaker 7: handed it off to cook bootlegs, play actions that that's
- 6:46Speaker 7: their team now. Like I think when Allen ascended to
- 6:50Speaker 7: this level. It was with Brian Dable and it was
- 6:53Speaker 7: a lot more spread RPO him in the shotgun type
- 6:56Speaker 7: of stuff. Now they are one of the more under
- 6:59Speaker 7: center heavy teams in the league. They play more two
- 7:01Speaker 7: tight end sets than any team in the NFL. They
- 7:04Speaker 7: run the ball at a really high volume. So they
- 7:07Speaker 7: they've really kind of changed it. And I think some
- 7:09Speaker 7: of it. and it didn't work last week, but it's
- 7:11Speaker 7: stemming from, well, if we're just really efficient in 30 dropbacks,
- 7:16Speaker 7: then maybe he won't turn it over five times a game.
- 7:18Speaker 7: You know, if we're going to drop him back 50
- 7:20Speaker 7: times a game, we're kind of just putting him in
- 7:23Speaker 7: a position where there's going to be more opportunity to
- 7:25Speaker 7: turn it over.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Put a paperclip in the running the ball at a
- 7:29Speaker 4: high volume, because I want to get back to that
- 7:31Speaker 4: as it relates to the Patriots defense.
- 7:33Speaker 2: But Joe Brady... Is he calling the plays?
- 7:38Speaker 10: Yeah, he's very good. He's very good.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Would you consider him one of the tight pants people?
- 7:42Speaker 10: Sure. Yeah.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Because I got the sense last year that he was
- 7:46Speaker 4: kind of Josh Allen's guy.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I think Josh Allen really liked him.
- 7:51Speaker 10: He's really good. They do a lot of scheming.
- 7:55Speaker 7: I would say specifically in the run game to really
- 7:58Speaker 7: get that run game to be dynamic. Like it's not
- 8:00Speaker 7: just that they can run the ball four and a
- 8:02Speaker 7: half yards at a time. They can hit big plays
- 8:05Speaker 7: with their run game and they do it consistently. So
- 8:09Speaker 7: I think I've, you know, over the last couple of years,
- 8:12Speaker 7: just been really impressed. I would say the most with
- 8:15Speaker 7: how they've kind of reinvented themselves to be this kind
- 8:19Speaker 7: of offense. And it really starts with the tight ends, Knox, Kincaid,
- 8:24Speaker 7: you know, those guys, Jackson Haas, who's like their blocking
- 8:27Speaker 7: tight end. You know, he he's involved as well. So
- 8:31Speaker 7: they they've fully bought into the 12 personnel, the 13 personnel,
- 8:36Speaker 7: that sort of thing. thing and even their receivers you
- 8:39Speaker 7: know like Keon Coleman and uh and Shakir like those
- 8:42Speaker 7: guys will run block like those guys will stick their
- 8:44Speaker 7: nose in there and they'll run block too so it's
- 8:47Speaker 7: a it's a good it's a good offense I mean
- 8:49Speaker 7: they're number one in the league in scoring so it's
- 8:51Speaker 7: a good offense to.
- 8:52Speaker 9: Me they look like a team that came out and
- 8:54Speaker 9: I mean Evan described great how they evolved but it
- 8:56Speaker 9: still feels like a team that's on a mission to
- 8:58Speaker 9: me and it still carries that same kind of like
- 9:00Speaker 9: Super Bowl expectation The Patriots teams often, I feel like
- 9:04Speaker 9: September is a feeling out period and things, you know,
- 9:06Speaker 9: this thing might not be great. I'm speaking generally, not
- 9:08Speaker 9: specifically this year, but, you know, generally there's stuff where
- 9:11Speaker 9: it feels like they're going to have to figure this out. And,
- 9:13Speaker 9: you know, we'll get to October, we'll figure it out.
- 9:14Speaker 9: To me, it felt like the Bills are like fully
- 9:16Speaker 9: formed product coming into the season.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And, you know, it looks.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Like they are ready to pick right up with it.
- 9:21Speaker 6: I think they're trying to figure it out on defense, right?
- 9:23Speaker 6: Because they've turned it over, you know, and Jim Leonard
- 9:25Speaker 6: on that side. But just sticking with the offense that
- 9:28Speaker 6: you guys just sort of brought up, you know, They
- 9:32Speaker 6: do play bully ball, and they do try to play
- 9:34Speaker 6: that way. One of the things that was weird for
- 9:36Speaker 6: them last week, again, I'm watching the red zone. I'm
- 9:39Speaker 6: not watching every play. I'm not breaking down all 22.
- 9:41Speaker 6: It looked like they had a hard time with the
- 9:44Speaker 6: Chargers front. They looked like they were under a lot
- 9:46Speaker 6: of pressure last week. And that's obviously, if you're going
- 9:50Speaker 6: to get Josh Allen to make mistakes, that's the way
- 9:52Speaker 6: to do it, especially the whole adage of you force
- 9:55Speaker 6: him to go left, and sometimes he makes different decisions
- 9:59Speaker 6: with the ball. um they have a good the bills
- 10:02Speaker 6: have a good offensive line i don't think it played
- 10:03Speaker 6: all that well last week it looked like josh allen
- 10:05Speaker 6: was especially.
- 10:07Speaker 7: Deon dawkins gave up a sack which like that's like
- 10:10Speaker 7: you know seeing like bigfoot or something like when he
- 10:13Speaker 7: gives up a sack but they uh you know, I'll
- 10:17Speaker 7: write about it in my game preview to like exactly
- 10:19Speaker 7: all the schemes that the chargers were using to do it.
- 10:21Speaker 7: But I thought the chargers covered really well in that game.
- 10:24Speaker 7: I thought they played really good past defense. Now the
- 10:26Speaker 7: run defense obviously was a little bit leaky, but specifically
- 10:31Speaker 7: they played some snaps in man-to-man coverage where they were
- 10:33Speaker 7: spying Allen with one of their linebackers. And even though
- 10:38Speaker 7: he can still make you pay On scrambles like that,
- 10:41Speaker 7: they did a good job of containing him in the
- 10:44Speaker 7: pocket against man-to-man, and I still don't necessarily think that
- 10:47Speaker 7: their receivers are world beaters. DJ Moore is a good,
- 10:51Speaker 7: solid player. Khalil Shakir is a solid player. The guy
- 10:55Speaker 7: that would worry me in this equation is Kincaid. You know,
- 10:58Speaker 7: Kincaid is he's he's excellent. He's leading the league in
- 11:01Speaker 7: yards by tight ends right now.
- 11:03Speaker 10: He's very good.
- 11:04Speaker 7: So if you're going to play a lot of man
- 11:06Speaker 7: to man, like who's covering Kincaid, are you going to
- 11:08Speaker 7: put one of the corners on Kincaid? Are you going
- 11:10Speaker 7: to trust Jalen Reed or Craig Woodson coming back to
- 11:13Speaker 7: play Kincaid? But I think that looking at the film,
- 11:16Speaker 7: I thought that the Chargers put some man coverage dropbacks
- 11:19Speaker 7: on tape where the Patriots could probably do something similar there.
- 11:22Speaker 7: Against Josh Allen, it was a lot of four-man rushes
- 11:25Speaker 7: with the one guy spying, and they could probably execute that.
- 11:29Speaker 7: But are they going to be able to cover Kincaid,
- 11:31Speaker 7: and what do they have?
- 11:32Speaker 4: Did the Chargers focus on their pass defense and kind
- 11:36Speaker 4: of sacrifice their run defense?
- 11:38Speaker 7: Maybe to an extent. I mean, they're all playing too
- 11:41Speaker 7: high shells. All these teams are sticking in those too
- 11:45Speaker 7: high shells. So I don't know if that was necessarily
- 11:47Speaker 7: that they were sacrificing the run or if that's just
- 11:50Speaker 7: the style in which they play defensively. But that's what
- 11:54Speaker 7: they do. And there was some dropbacks in quarters, cover six.
- 11:58Speaker 7: obviously man that I thought they covered really well. And
- 12:03Speaker 7: Allen really didn't have a whole lot to throw to.
- 12:05Speaker 7: So then, of course, they popped one at the very
- 12:08Speaker 7: end against man coverage, and it kind of skews the numbers.
- 12:10Speaker 7: But overall, I thought it was pretty good.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Getting back to the Bills' mindset from last year to
- 12:15Speaker 4: this year, I would not be surprised if their mindset
- 12:20Speaker 4: going into this season is we're pissed. We are better
- 12:24Speaker 4: than the Patriots, despite them winning the East last year.
- 12:28Speaker 4: We showed that when we played them the second time.
- 12:31Speaker 4: And it's just because of things that we did early
- 12:34Speaker 4: that we didn't win.
- 12:35Speaker 2: The East and they did.
- 12:37Speaker 4: And if we, you know, so I think that, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 4: this is a payback year for them.
- 12:44Speaker 9: Well, there's blood in the water for them. That's usually
- 12:47Speaker 9: a shark reference, of course, that I love. But, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 9: we talked about it on the postgame show. You win
- 12:52Speaker 9: this game. You got a three-game lead. four, four games
- 12:56Speaker 9: into the season, you know, it's, it's a chance for
- 12:58Speaker 9: them to really put the hammer down. And I expect
- 13:00Speaker 9: that's how they're going to want to come out. And we've,
- 13:02Speaker 9: you know, we've seen that before. We've seen that movie
- 13:05Speaker 9: in the 2021 playoffs where the bills are locked in
- 13:07Speaker 9: and it's score score.
- 13:10Speaker 2: There's no punting.
- 13:11Speaker 9: So the Patriots are, you know, it's like I said yesterday, I,
- 13:14Speaker 9: I embrace the challenge of saying, go in there, let
- 13:17Speaker 9: it rip. You know, somebody has got to step up to,
- 13:20Speaker 9: I feel like for the Patriots, like somebody has to
- 13:22Speaker 9: step up and start to make some plays and, where
- 13:24Speaker 9: you weren't necessarily expecting it. Like, we can all look
- 13:27Speaker 9: at the Christian Barmores, the Milton Williams, of course, Drake May,
- 13:30Speaker 9: you know, maybe Hunter Henry, guys that have been quiet here.
- 13:33Speaker 9: But I think that they need to start to get
- 13:34Speaker 9: contributions from some other places. And, oh, by the way,
- 13:37Speaker 9: Greg Van Roten just landed on IR, too. So that's your,
- 13:40Speaker 9: you know, second week in a row, your starting right
- 13:42Speaker 9: guard is out.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I think we're up to 17 IR declarations this year.
- 13:46Speaker 2: I mean, something like that.
- 13:48Speaker 10: It is.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Including training camp. I mean, it's it's you know, I
- 13:50Speaker 2: think we've already probably surpassed where it was last year.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I thought it would be worse. I didn't think it
- 13:53Speaker 2: would be this bad.
- 13:54Speaker 6: It's about the same already. And, you know, some of
- 13:57Speaker 6: that is very misleading, as Mike said. And a lot
- 14:00Speaker 6: of the guys, a lot of those guys are like
- 14:01Speaker 6: young guys that they're kind of stashing on.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I are Jeremiah Webb. Yeah. But that was the case
- 14:06Speaker 2: every year.
- 14:07Speaker 10: And they have lost short-term. Like, A.J. Brown will be
- 14:10Speaker 10: back this season.
- 14:12Speaker 6: But they have lost significant players like Owenu and A.J.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Brown.
- 14:16Speaker 6: And, you know, those are impactful losses on IR. So
- 14:21Speaker 6: it's not just all Jeremiah West.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I think, you know, Roten is a tough loss. I
- 14:26Speaker 4: think Ben Brown's as good at guard. The problem is
- 14:29Speaker 4: what happens if your center gets hurt. David Andrews talked
- 14:33Speaker 4: about that.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Now you've got a problem.
- 14:35Speaker 9: You do have a couple guys on the practice squad.
- 14:38Speaker 9: Jake Kubis played a little bit in the league. Xavier Newman-Johnson.
- 14:41Speaker 9: You have a couple guards down there, but mentioning even
- 14:45Speaker 9: Marcus Bryant, what's going to happen with Morgan Moses this week?
- 14:48Speaker 2: It looked like he was a little banged up. Is
- 14:49Speaker 2: he going to be limited? I know Marcus Bryant can't
- 14:52Speaker 2: come back this week, but you know, Brendan Schooler, just,
- 14:54Speaker 2: you know, guys that can maybe give you a little
- 14:56Speaker 2: bit of boost. Yeah, well, I think they'll be okay.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean, Ben Brown's played center in the league.
- 15:01Speaker 7: Yeah, but then you have to move him over, and
- 15:03Speaker 7: now you're four deep at guard.
- 15:06Speaker 6: I did think it was interesting that Mike Rabel talked
- 15:09Speaker 6: about Ben Brown specifically and saying, like, the right side
- 15:12Speaker 6: as opposed to the left side for him.
- 15:14Speaker 2: That was interesting.
- 15:15Speaker 6: But you brought up the center aspect, and David Andrews
- 15:19Speaker 6: talked about it on one of my shows earlier in
- 15:22Speaker 6: the week, just saying how it's, it is a risk
- 15:25Speaker 6: if you're not necessarily sure if someone can play center.
- 15:30Speaker 6: If you have your backup center playing guard and your
- 15:33Speaker 6: center in there and then you lose one, you're kind
- 15:38Speaker 6: of affecting two spots with something like that. But wouldn't
- 15:42Speaker 6: you guys be surprised if Ben Brown wasn't in the
- 15:45Speaker 6: mix this week?
- 15:46Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. I think he's going to play. Yeah, I
- 15:48Speaker 2: would be.
- 15:48Speaker 9: I mean, this is the first time Walter Rouse has
- 15:50Speaker 9: ever played right guard and came, you know, that's what
- 15:52Speaker 9: he said.
- 15:53Speaker 2: So, and I don't think it went great.
- 15:54Speaker 12: No.
- 15:55Speaker 6: So my guess is they're going to say, we don't
- 15:56Speaker 6: want to do it, but we got to do it.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 2: We got to try someone else. We just got to
- 16:00Speaker 2: keep our center healthy.
- 16:01Speaker 9: I don't think Ben Brown was great this summer, but
- 16:03Speaker 9: I liked him better the last couple of years when
- 16:06Speaker 9: he's had to fill in. But I, I thought he
- 16:07Speaker 9: kind of struggled this summer, but maybe he was hurt.
- 16:09Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 16:10Speaker 2: We'll see. I mean, that was, that happened in the
- 16:11Speaker 2: preseason game, right? Though the first preseason game.
- 16:13Speaker 5: So, yep.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I don't know what the reasoning is for it.
- 16:15Speaker 9: I've always liked his size. I mean, he's got some experience.
- 16:18Speaker 9: But you're ticking down the depth chart now.
- 16:20Speaker 2: It's getting tougher.
- 16:22Speaker 10: At some point, Lomo's got to be in this mix.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Yeah, because I know the reports now on Morgan Moses
- 16:28Speaker 4: is that he did hurt his.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Like the first or second play of the game.
- 16:32Speaker 10: Well, he was on the injury report.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but like something happened.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Yeah, he might have re-aggravated it. But I'm more thinking
- 16:38Speaker 7: about Lomu at guard.
- 16:40Speaker 10: Really?
- 16:41Speaker 7: You got to get your best five on the field.
- 16:43Speaker 7: Like if you're going to start pulling up guys.
- 16:45Speaker 2: But what if Moses is hurt? I don't.
- 16:49Speaker 7: From my experience with Morgan Moses, unless he's hurt, hurt,
- 16:52Speaker 7: he's going to play. So maybe it not, it won't
- 16:54Speaker 7: be a hundred percent, but I think he's going to play.
- 16:58Speaker 7: So that's just my opinion on that. But you know,
- 17:01Speaker 7: like he played through stuff last year too, and, and
- 17:04Speaker 7: was able to, to make it work.
- 17:06Speaker 2: I do wonder if it's a little bit more serious. Yeah.
- 17:09Speaker 2: So like if he's okay. Yes.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I think, I think Lomo, that makes more sense, but,
- 17:17Speaker 4: If Moses is ineffective because of his injury, then you can't.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Have him out there. He struggled. You got to put
- 17:25Speaker 2: Lomo out there and Ben Brown at guard. Yeah.
- 17:27Speaker 7: I mean, I think that's... The Lomo thing at guard
- 17:30Speaker 7: is not next week. Like, this is, like, behind the scenes,
- 17:34Speaker 7: I wouldn't be surprised if they start getting him ramped
- 17:37Speaker 7: up at guard just as an option.
- 17:39Speaker 10: Because he's a first-round pick. Like, he's got a ton
- 17:41Speaker 10: of talent. Like, you have to.
- 17:43Speaker 7: You know, you're getting to, you said you were, you know,
- 17:46Speaker 7: almost four deep at guard. It's like, okay, well, the
- 17:48Speaker 7: guy you drafted 28th overall is sitting on the bench. So, like,
- 17:52Speaker 7: there's got to be a place that you can play him.
- 17:53Speaker 9: I just feel like he's going to be in there.
- 17:55Speaker 9: I don't know if it's going to be guard or tackle,
- 17:57Speaker 9: but by midseason, I feel like he's going to be playing.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Okay.
- 18:01Speaker 4: So now I want to go back to the Bills running,
- 18:04Speaker 4: you know, game versus our defense. Because, you know, last
- 18:09Speaker 4: week our defense did not play well. They got pushed around.
- 18:15Speaker 4: How are they going to turn this around against the Bills,
- 18:17Speaker 4: who it's not just the running backs, it's Josh Allen?
- 18:22Speaker 9: Well, I'd love to start with getting Draymond Jones and
- 18:23Speaker 9: Craig Woodson back. I mean, I think that will give
- 18:25Speaker 9: you at least some options to deal with that. I mean,
- 18:27Speaker 9: Draymond Jones is pretty solid on the edge, but when
- 18:30Speaker 9: Evan talked about the multiple tight ends, to have Craig
- 18:32Speaker 9: Woodson back this week, I mean, I almost wonder if
- 18:35Speaker 9: he maybe could have gone last week, but they know
- 18:36Speaker 9: that this is a division game that we're really going
- 18:39Speaker 9: to need him.
- 18:39Speaker 2: For that game. That's exactly what I was going to say.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Is there any chance that if last week was a
- 18:45Speaker 4: playoff game, they would have played? But knowing you've got
- 18:48Speaker 4: the Bills coming up next, let's make sure they're whatever
- 18:53Speaker 4: percentage better.
- 18:54Speaker 2: Next week. I think he was at practice Friday.
- 18:57Speaker 7: I would say the two guys that traveled, that definitely
- 18:59Speaker 7: is possible. Eli Raritan and Craig Woodson. Draymond Jones is hurt.
- 19:03Speaker 7: Draymond Jones, he left the game immediately holding his shoulder.
- 19:08Speaker 7: He didn't practice at all last week. We'll see if
- 19:10Speaker 7: he's out there today. But when it comes to stopping...
- 19:12Speaker 7: you know, the bills run game. I just think it
- 19:15Speaker 7: all comes down to like, how do you want to
- 19:16Speaker 7: match them in two tight ends when they put their
- 19:19Speaker 7: two and three tight ends on the field? Are you
- 19:21Speaker 7: going to play base against it? Are you going to
- 19:22Speaker 7: play three safety nickel against it? Can you play three
- 19:25Speaker 7: safety nickel? If you like, do you have what's in
- 19:27Speaker 7: healthy to do that? And then can you cover out
- 19:30Speaker 7: of those groupings as well? Cause they're going to hit
- 19:32Speaker 7: you with play action passes. Typically speaking, if they can
- 19:35Speaker 7: play more man-to-man on the back end, then like the
- 19:38Speaker 7: front seven can just worry about stopping the run, right?
- 19:41Speaker 7: Because you're not worried about dropping into coverage to handle
- 19:44Speaker 7: the responsibilities in zone coverage. So if you play a
- 19:48Speaker 7: team that runs the ball well and puts play actions
- 19:51Speaker 7: a lot, like Buffalo, you usually play more man-to-man against
- 19:55Speaker 7: teams like that because you're not pulling zone defenders in conflict.
- 19:58Speaker 10: So that's kind of what I expect them to do.
- 20:01Speaker 4: You're going to have to get pressure early, though. You're
- 20:03Speaker 4: going to have to help out there. We always talked
- 20:07Speaker 4: about this back in the day, like Do you get
- 20:10Speaker 4: the quarterback off the spot or do you keep him
- 20:13Speaker 4: on the spot? And I think this is a game
- 20:14Speaker 4: where you're trying to keep him in the pocket and
- 20:17Speaker 4: just collapse the pocket rather than go crazy.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So it's that controlled rush type of game.
- 20:23Speaker 9: Yeah, I wonder, Ev, I think you mentioned this in
- 20:26Speaker 9: your film review, but I wonder if Daquan Jones maybe
- 20:29Speaker 9: gets a little bit more run.
- 20:30Speaker 2: He's played in Buffalo. He probably has a sense of
- 20:33Speaker 2: how they kind of want to play. I don't know
- 20:34Speaker 2: if that's worth much, but.
- 20:36Speaker 9: I think they need to find some more depth on
- 20:38Speaker 9: the defensive line, too, to deal with that stuff. And
- 20:40Speaker 9: at least just have a rotation and have more than
- 20:43Speaker 9: two guys that you feel good about when they're on
- 20:45Speaker 9: the field right now.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Early weather report?
- 20:48Speaker 7: Looks like it's going to be nice for Buffalo. Sunny, 60,
- 20:52Speaker 7: something like that. But it shouldn't be a weather game.
- 20:57Speaker 7: I don't think it's going to be. any precipitation or
- 21:00Speaker 7: like heavy winds or, but you know, Buffalo, it could,
- 21:02Speaker 7: that could change.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah. Lake effect.
- 21:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I would say two on the defense.
- 21:08Speaker 10: That's what it says when I looked it up yesterday.
- 21:10Speaker 2: You know, the defense, they, they switched over, but I just,
- 21:13Speaker 2: I think it's a real good sign.
- 21:15Speaker 9: If I was starting a new defense and putting a
- 21:17Speaker 9: new defensive scheme that, you know, a guy like Greg
- 21:19Speaker 9: Russo is really seems to take to it and really
- 21:21Speaker 9: seems to be playing, you know, the best football of
- 21:23Speaker 9: his career. Dion Walker also, uh, you know, elevating. And
- 21:26Speaker 9: I know, you know, you look at the rankings and
- 21:28Speaker 9: all that kind of stuff, it doesn't make them out to.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Be world beaters.
- 21:30Speaker 9: But I think they're a very good defense, and I
- 21:32Speaker 9: think their talent is playing better right now.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Well, even last week.
- 21:35Speaker 9: And it just goes back to playing loose and fast
- 21:36Speaker 9: to me.
- 21:37Speaker 4: To me, giving up 16 points when your offense turns
- 21:39Speaker 4: the ball over five times is an accomplishment.
- 21:41Speaker 6: Yeah, they kept them in the game. I just wonder
- 21:43Speaker 6: how much of that is about the Chargers. Because, you know,
- 21:46Speaker 6: the Bills have struggled. This has definitely been a transition.
- 21:49Speaker 6: I think they have some pieces in place, and I
- 21:51Speaker 6: think Rousseau is one of them. You know, and he's
- 21:54Speaker 6: played well. I like the move for them because I
- 21:57Speaker 6: just felt like the Sean McDermott defense that they had
- 22:00Speaker 6: put up a lot of good regular season numbers, but
- 22:02Speaker 6: it consistently got exposed against good teams, against good offenses.
- 22:07Speaker 6: And when they played in the playoffs, generally that's what
- 22:09Speaker 6: you see. And I don't really remember too many of
- 22:12Speaker 6: their playoff runs that included great defense.
- 22:15Speaker 2: It was always.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Josh Allen finding a way to win the game at
- 22:20Speaker 6: the end of the game with offense. And now maybe
- 22:24Speaker 6: it won't be this year because Evan and I talk
- 22:27Speaker 6: about this off-air a lot. It's a completely different scheme,
- 22:31Speaker 6: and you don't have the players that you want to
- 22:33Speaker 6: fit into those spots. So it might take a little
- 22:36Speaker 6: while for Jim Leonard to get the personnel that he wants,
- 22:39Speaker 6: but I think eventually... they'll be better defensively for this move.
- 22:42Speaker 10: Yeah, especially in the secondary.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Like right now, I think that they have a bunch
- 22:46Speaker 7: of zone corners that are trying to play more postman
- 22:49Speaker 7: and things like that, and maybe they're used to playing.
- 22:52Speaker 10: But I'm a deuce.
- 22:54Speaker 7: I think the fear I have in this game for
- 22:56Speaker 7: the Patriots offense is that that front takes over the game.
- 22:59Speaker 7: When you look at Oliver, Walker, Rousseau, those three guys
- 23:03Speaker 7: right now are playing at an exceptionally high level. I mean,
- 23:06Speaker 7: Rousseau has basically been the best pass rusher in the
- 23:08Speaker 7: league through three weeks. He's number one in pressures, number
- 23:12Speaker 7: one in sacks. Deion Walker's having a breakout year. We
- 23:15Speaker 7: just talked about right guard and all these issues on
- 23:17Speaker 7: the offensive line. I think the big reason why Rousseau
- 23:20Speaker 7: is playing so well is because he's playing as a
- 23:22Speaker 7: true stand-up outside linebacker now instead of a 4-3 end.
- 23:26Speaker 7: So he's wider and he's up on his feet. and
- 23:28Speaker 7: I think that those things are making him a better player.
- 23:31Speaker 7: He sets the edge. He can rush. He's long. He's
- 23:35Speaker 7: got long strides, but he's also got long arms. He's
- 23:39Speaker 7: a beast.
- 23:40Speaker 10: He's a problem.
- 23:42Speaker 7: The Chargers couldn't block him, and they have good tackles,
- 23:44Speaker 7: and they could not block him. They couldn't run to his.
- 23:47Speaker 10: Side, nothing.
- 23:48Speaker 7: So he worries me a lot. The Patriots have done
- 23:50Speaker 7: a lot to help the tackles. They've done a lot
- 23:52Speaker 7: of chipping. They've done a lot of things like that,
- 23:54Speaker 7: so I expect that to continue, but... I think there
- 23:57Speaker 7: are going to be opportunities to throw the ball. And
- 23:59Speaker 7: there's actually, Fred, you sparked something when you mentioned, like,
- 24:03Speaker 7: how would you coach Drake May yesterday? And I was
- 24:06Speaker 7: just thinking of, you know, that Brady clip from Super
- 24:10Speaker 7: Bowl 36 when Belichick and Charlie Weiss are like.
- 24:13Speaker 10: Just don't turn the ball over. And Drew goes, F it,
- 24:17Speaker 10: sling it.
- 24:17Speaker 7: You know, and I think in this game, I might
- 24:20Speaker 7: think about saying that to Drake May against this defense.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Well, listen, in my PU on TV hit that I
- 24:26Speaker 4: do I brought up back in the day, Paul, you'll
- 24:30Speaker 4: remember this, your guy Drew was going through a little
- 24:33Speaker 4: bit of a slump.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I don't recall.
- 24:36Speaker 4: And his dad, Mac Bledsoe, and Drew said this, told
- 24:43Speaker 4: his son, just go out there and have fun.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Have fun. And he said that reminder to me was
- 24:49Speaker 2: what got me out of the slump.
- 24:51Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 24:52Speaker 2: So it's kind of the same thing. Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 7: And I like, look, they, they know better than me
- 24:55Speaker 7: on how to coach them. But I just think that
- 24:58Speaker 7: I was listening to Orlovsky yesterday and he mentioned like
- 25:01Speaker 7: when you tell a quarterback, that's a gunslinger by nature
- 25:05Speaker 7: to not throw interceptions and to be careful and to
- 25:08Speaker 7: protect the ball. And sometimes it has like the adverse
- 25:11Speaker 7: effect where they like, it gets in their head too
- 25:14Speaker 7: much and then they're playing too tight. And this is
- 25:16Speaker 7: one of those games. And I, you know, Paul said
- 25:18Speaker 7: this to me yesterday too, the bills are going to score.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 25:21Speaker 10: Like the bill, the bills are going to score like
- 25:23Speaker 10: the Patriots defense.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I think probably on the first drive. So don't freak out.
- 25:28Speaker 10: The Patriots defense. I think they can hang in there.
- 25:31Speaker 7: I think against Buffalo, as long as they don't get
- 25:34Speaker 7: run on, they can hang in there, but they're going
- 25:36Speaker 7: to score. Even last week with five turnovers, they still
- 25:39Speaker 7: got to 24 points. So you're not going to win
- 25:41Speaker 7: this game 13-10. So in order to actually win this game,
- 25:46Speaker 7: I think that Drake May's got to play like old
- 25:49Speaker 7: Drake May. And in order to do that, I think
- 25:51Speaker 7: you kind of have to tell him, just go out
- 25:53Speaker 7: there and sling it, kid.
- 25:54Speaker 10: And see what happens.
- 25:56Speaker 6: So there's two mindsets that you might have.
- 25:58Speaker 2: That's one of them.
- 25:59Speaker 6: And I think that might be where they go because
- 26:01Speaker 6: I think that might be the best way to attack Buffalo.
- 26:04Speaker 6: The other one would be the cliche of, you know,
- 26:07Speaker 6: find a way to get your running game going and
- 26:10Speaker 6: maybe try to shorten the game a little bit and
- 26:12Speaker 6: keep Josh Allen on the sideline. I mean, the way
- 26:15Speaker 6: the Patriots have run doesn't bode a lot of confidence
- 26:19Speaker 6: for me for them being able.
- 26:21Speaker 2: To pull that off.
- 26:21Speaker 6: But that was the thing, you know, we tape a
- 26:24Speaker 6: lot of shows during the course of the week. And
- 26:25Speaker 6: that was one of the things that I said on
- 26:27Speaker 6: All Access when we taped that yesterday is, You know,
- 26:31Speaker 6: Buffalo has traditionally been susceptible to the running game. Now,
- 26:34Speaker 6: I know that you guys are right when you're talking
- 26:36Speaker 6: about Ed Oliver and Deion Walker in the middle.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Maybe this is a little bit of a different.
- 26:40Speaker 10: They're still statistically not a very good run.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 6: So maybe you can get your two guys going. You know,
- 26:46Speaker 6: Henderson had a monster game here in Foxborough last year.
- 26:49Speaker 6: I know it wasn't necessarily traditional runs. There's one toss
- 26:53Speaker 6: sweep that he basically just went down the sideline. There
- 26:55Speaker 6: was no one there. And the other one, he just
- 26:57Speaker 6: stopped when he tried to do the same thing.
- 26:59Speaker 10: Out the back door.
- 27:00Speaker 6: Reversed out the back door. And again, there's nobody there.
- 27:02Speaker 6: So maybe you can get some... Because I just don't
- 27:07Speaker 6: see you winning, like Evan said. I don't see you
- 27:09Speaker 6: winning a 13-10 game. But if it's 31-27, maybe you
- 27:14Speaker 6: have a shot with the ball at the end and
- 27:17Speaker 6: you can be the 31.
- 27:18Speaker 10: My first thought was.
- 27:20Speaker 7: Protect the ball, shorten the game, win with defense. And
- 27:24Speaker 7: then I remember Josh Allen is playing for the bills.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:26Speaker 7: And I was like, maybe other weeks, like next week
- 27:29Speaker 7: when they play the Raiders, like maybe you can take
- 27:31Speaker 7: that sort of approach to the game, but I just
- 27:34Speaker 7: don't know if you're going to be able to hang
- 27:36Speaker 7: on the scoreboard with Allen. If that's your only approach
- 27:38Speaker 7: is like, we're just going to be conservative and run
- 27:41Speaker 7: the ball and that sort of thing.
- 27:42Speaker 9: And that's, and that I think like, cause last week
- 27:44Speaker 9: I was talking about turnovers going into that, like playing tight.
- 27:47Speaker 9: And now it's like, what do you have to lose? Like,
- 27:49Speaker 9: you know, just, I feel like you guys are right.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Evolve the message. Go out there. Just let it rip.
- 27:54Speaker 2: This is a good team. This is an AFC battle.
- 27:56Speaker 9: Embrace this kind of really important game on your schedule.
- 27:59Speaker 9: And like I said, I think it's an opportunity that
- 28:02Speaker 9: they can play better and show something against another really
- 28:05Speaker 9: good team.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Look, I don't know about you guys, but here's what
- 28:08Speaker 2: I need from this game. Just compete. Play better.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Come out of this game thinking, yeah, we could have
- 28:16Speaker 4: won if we had done X and Y better. Just
- 28:18Speaker 4: have a better showing than last week. That's all right
- 28:21Speaker 4: now I'm asking for.
- 28:22Speaker 6: Looking forward to that pick tomorrow.
- 28:24Speaker 4: That's all I'm, like, we just need to play better.
- 28:28Speaker 4: You know, no stupid mistakes. Yeah, and turnovers, obviously, that
- 28:35Speaker 4: goes into the category of stupid mistakes. No turnovers. If
- 28:40Speaker 4: we do that, then I'll feel better. I'll feel better
- 28:43Speaker 4: going into the Raiders in two weeks.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Curse to Patriots, colon. Be better.
- 28:49Speaker 9: No, it's just hard to jumpstart it, you know, and
- 28:52Speaker 9: that's why early in the season, like, you know, you're
- 28:54Speaker 9: only one and two, but at the same time, like,
- 28:56Speaker 9: you don't have any momentum.
- 28:58Speaker 2: It feels different.
- 28:58Speaker 9: And to try to, like, you know, and that's why
- 29:00Speaker 9: last year's Buffalo game, it felt like not only they
- 29:03Speaker 9: grabbed momentum, they grabbed confidence that they could compete and
- 29:06Speaker 9: that they had the horses to go against these teams
- 29:08Speaker 9: and go toe-to-toe down to the end and win a
- 29:10Speaker 9: game on, you know, on a game-ending kick. And right
- 29:13Speaker 9: now I don't think they have that energy. And, like,
- 29:15Speaker 9: so to your point, like, you know, maybe it isn't
- 29:17Speaker 9: a loss. Ideally it would be in a win. But
- 29:18Speaker 9: you've got to find a way to start to get
- 29:20Speaker 9: some momentum going. Because I didn't even ever feel like
- 29:22Speaker 9: they had anything going in that Jacksonville game. You know,
- 29:25Speaker 9: it didn't even feel like they came in with, like,
- 29:27Speaker 9: great energy. It felt like almost they're bracing for the
- 29:30Speaker 9: bottom to fall out.
- 29:31Speaker 2: And then it did. And it was like, yep, here
- 29:32Speaker 2: we go again. You know, I don't know if they're
- 29:34Speaker 2: to that point yet with this team. It's still so early.
- 29:36Speaker 6: It does seem like their mental state right now is
- 29:39Speaker 6: a little fragile.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Thank you. need something.
- 29:41Speaker 6: It seems from afar that, like you said, the mistakes
- 29:45Speaker 6: that have happened seem to really snowball with this team.
- 29:51Speaker 6: I do think there's something to that, like, All right,
- 29:56Speaker 6: so this is Buffalo, and everybody thinks that Buffalo is
- 29:59Speaker 6: the better team. You know, so what do you got
- 30:02Speaker 6: to lose? You know, I was talking to Brian Hoyer yesterday.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I don't know if you know. I was talking to
- 30:07Speaker 2: Brian Hoyer.
- 30:07Speaker 6: You know, when I was letting him in the door
- 30:09Speaker 6: because he doesn't have a badge.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Was he breaking down the coverage for you? Yeah. No,
- 30:14Speaker 2: and he sort of mentioned that.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Like, yeah, it's going to be a tall task to
- 30:19Speaker 6: go to Buffalo and come out with a win, but
- 30:21Speaker 6: maybe that might be– the medicine that Drake needs to
- 30:24Speaker 6: sort of snap out of it. Like Evan said, like just, Hey,
- 30:27Speaker 6: let it rip because we can't win if we don't
- 30:31Speaker 6: score some points. So our only chance here, we're, we're
- 30:35Speaker 6: telling you, you know, we'll live with some mistakes, you know,
- 30:38Speaker 6: if that's okay. Cause if you don't make the mistakes,
- 30:41Speaker 6: we might have a chance.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 30:43Speaker 9: You know, and I, but you got to try and,
- 30:45Speaker 9: you know, and I think I like what you're saying
- 30:47Speaker 9: of just being like, If you throw him one, you
- 30:49Speaker 9: throw him one. We think that we're going to punch
- 30:50Speaker 9: the ball out on James Cook once in a while.
- 30:52Speaker 9: We think Josh Allen's going to run with a loaf
- 30:54Speaker 9: of bread and we're going to get that, you know.
- 30:55Speaker 6: Like, if there are no turnovers in this game for
- 30:57Speaker 6: either side, I don't think people would like the Patriots' chances, right?
- 31:01Speaker 2: No.
- 31:01Speaker 6: Last year, that was a big part of the win
- 31:04Speaker 6: for the Patriots was the Bills coughed it up three times.
- 31:07Speaker 2: You know, so maybe they do it again.
- 31:09Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it is kind of their thing, you know,
- 31:11Speaker 9: and that's when I said, like, It felt kind of
- 31:12Speaker 9: like they picked right.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Up where they left off. It's like, yeah, some of
- 31:14Speaker 2: the works, too. This is why people don't trust Buffalo.
- 31:18Speaker 4: So we like to reminisce about the win the Patriots
- 31:21Speaker 4: had last year in Buffalo. They also had a game
- 31:24Speaker 4: back in Gillette in which the Patriots went out to
- 31:27Speaker 4: a 24-3 lead, I believe.
- 31:28Speaker 2: 21-0. 21-0, then 24-3.
- 31:33Speaker 4: How similar is their defense, and is there anything to
- 31:37Speaker 4: glean from how the Patriots jumped out to that lead?
- 31:41Speaker 10: So their defense is totally different.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Okay, so forget it.
- 31:45Speaker 7: They're running not only structurally their 3-4 defense now instead
- 31:50Speaker 7: of a 4-3, but they're also more multiple in terms
- 31:53Speaker 7: of personnel groupings.
- 31:54Speaker 2: They're all nickel before, right?
- 31:55Speaker 10: Yeah, pretty much.
- 31:56Speaker 7: Last year, McDermott started to be a little bit more
- 31:59Speaker 7: multiple just because he had to adjust, do something different.
- 32:03Speaker 7: But before, they were a four-down nickel defense for 10 years.
- 32:08Speaker 7: Now they're going to be more of an odd front defense,
- 32:10Speaker 7: a 3-4 defense. And they did some things, especially against
- 32:15Speaker 7: the Lions, that stood out to me relative to last year,
- 32:20Speaker 7: which is where I wonder how much Leonard watches that second.
- 32:24Speaker 7: Because a lot of the players are the same. Even
- 32:26Speaker 7: though the scheme is different, a lot of the players
- 32:28Speaker 7: for Buffalo are the same. The second half of the
- 32:31Speaker 7: Bills game in Week 15 of last year was the
- 32:33Speaker 7: Cover 6 game. That was when Cover 6 first became...
- 32:37Speaker 7: a blueprint against the Patriots was that game. And then
- 32:40Speaker 7: everybody in the playoff Seattle, they kind of copied what
- 32:43Speaker 7: Buffalo did in the second half, specifically of that game
- 32:46Speaker 7: to Drake may they played, they didn't play a ton
- 32:49Speaker 7: of cover six last week against the chargers. They did
- 32:51Speaker 7: it more against the lions and, It's in their bag.
- 32:54Speaker 7: You know, they run it about 10% of the time.
- 32:56Speaker 7: So if you expect them to go and watch that
- 32:59Speaker 7: game back and say, what did we do differently in the,
- 33:01Speaker 7: from the first half to the second half to win
- 33:04Speaker 7: the second half, I would say that the cover six
- 33:06Speaker 7: stuff would probably come back.
- 33:08Speaker 9: What did you think about Nate Tice's tweets about how
- 33:11Speaker 9: it's kind of a sample size thing with cover six?
- 33:13Speaker 9: What he was getting at was like, it's not really
- 33:15Speaker 9: like this is his, but what.
- 33:16Speaker 2: You think of the Nate Tice thing, Fred?
- 33:17Speaker 10: So I would say, so I would say like, I
- 33:22Speaker 10: should set up though.
- 33:23Speaker 9: I mean, he's just saying that like the cover six
- 33:25Speaker 9: thing with Drake may is largely just a statistical thing
- 33:28Speaker 9: because they played Seattle twice. Buffalo ran at the end
- 33:30Speaker 9: of the year and it's just, It's kind of become
- 33:32Speaker 9: a sample size thing where it's not really like, oh,
- 33:35Speaker 9: just run cover six and Drake may, you know, melts.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Into a puddle. It's, you know, Seattle ran really well
- 33:40Speaker 2: against them. Buffalo sprung it on them.
- 33:42Speaker 9: Just over the last handful of games, it's been. You know,
- 33:44Speaker 9: just a little bit more prevalent, but it's not this
- 33:46Speaker 9: like secret sauce that a lot of people make it
- 33:48Speaker 9: out to be.
- 33:48Speaker 7: I would say that it's more about what it takes
- 33:51Speaker 7: away than the fact that he is terrible against it.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:55Speaker 7: So I think it's more about the fact that they're
- 33:56Speaker 7: putting an umbrella on the top of the defense to
- 34:00Speaker 7: take away the deep throws. So his explosive play rate
- 34:03Speaker 7: like cuts in half. against cover six versus all the
- 34:06Speaker 7: other coverages because they have a cloud side of the
- 34:09Speaker 7: field and then they have the quarter side of the
- 34:11Speaker 7: field to take away the deep part of the field.
- 34:13Speaker 7: So a lot of his reps against cover six, he's
- 34:15Speaker 7: making the right throws and making the right decisions, but
- 34:18Speaker 7: they're all check downs. They're all like five yard passes
- 34:21Speaker 7: because that's the way the coverage is designed to funnel
- 34:23Speaker 7: the ball to. So it's not necessarily that he has
- 34:26Speaker 7: some bad turnovers against Seattle specifically against cover six, but
- 34:30Speaker 7: it's more so that it just kind of Takes away
- 34:33Speaker 7: the fastball, right?
- 34:34Speaker 10: Yeah, right.
- 34:34Speaker 7: It takes away the deep plays. So, like, I don't
- 34:37Speaker 7: know if it's necessarily that it's like a kryptonite. I
- 34:41Speaker 7: think it's more like, yeah, that's like a smart way
- 34:43Speaker 7: to play him. And they're making him, you know, take
- 34:45Speaker 7: the profits in March.
- 34:46Speaker 6: I can take both sides of that. Like, I can, yeah,
- 34:48Speaker 6: maybe it's not like the blueprint to stop him. But
- 34:52Speaker 6: if it is a good defense to prevent him from
- 34:55Speaker 6: doing what he does best.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Then you've made him a lesser player.
- 34:59Speaker 6: So maybe he's not a puddle like we've seen in
- 35:02Speaker 6: these three games, but maybe these make him do things
- 35:05Speaker 6: in a different way. And that different way is making
- 35:08Speaker 6: him less effective than he was last year. I am
- 35:10Speaker 6: more concerned, more so with the coverages, because as I
- 35:15Speaker 6: tell you guys all the time, that's not where I go.
- 35:17Speaker 6: I don't delve into the coverages and all these different things.
- 35:21Speaker 6: I'm wondering if there's been the Sean Payton effect of
- 35:24Speaker 6: this concerted effort to make sure that he doesn't end
- 35:27Speaker 6: up with 60, 70, 80 yards rushing in these games
- 35:30Speaker 6: that he did occasionally last year, and just some back-breaking
- 35:33Speaker 6: runs that he had periodically in some of these games.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Haven't seen that as much, and I'm wondering if there's
- 35:42Speaker 6: been an adjustment to the adjustment. you know, with some
- 35:45Speaker 6: of these defenses. Maybe it's cover six related.
- 35:47Speaker 10: I would say that it's zone coverage related.
- 35:50Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 35:50Speaker 10: You know, like... We talked about that yesterday.
- 35:52Speaker 7: Every time a defense in Pittsburgh did it to start
- 35:55Speaker 7: the game a couple weeks ago comes out in man-to-man,
- 35:58Speaker 7: I'm like, here we go.
- 36:00Speaker 2: This is good.
- 36:01Speaker 7: Please play as much man as you possibly want because
- 36:05Speaker 7: I actually think the Patriots receivers can get open against
- 36:08Speaker 7: man coverage and Drake May can scramble against man coverage.
- 36:11Speaker 7: The zone coverage is especially like a lot of these...
- 36:14Speaker 7: you know, pretty split safety zones where they're dropping like
- 36:17Speaker 7: seven guys into coverage. All the eyes are on Drake May.
- 36:20Speaker 7: Like all 11 guys on defense have vision on the quarterback.
- 36:24Speaker 7: So even when he goes to scramble, like they're mitigating
- 36:27Speaker 7: how explosive the scrambles are because they are all swarming
- 36:30Speaker 7: to the ball when he does scramble. So like it just,
- 36:33Speaker 7: I would say the less scrambling and the less running
- 36:36Speaker 7: is a concerted effort. It's a four-man rush. It's zone
- 36:39Speaker 7: coverage with guys' eyes in the backfield. And so now
- 36:42Speaker 7: all 11 players know where Drake May is at all times.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Well, I said yesterday that we'd get to more emails today.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Podcasts at Patriots.com. We do have people waiting on the phone.
- 36:53Speaker 4: We'll get to you, too. But I want to get
- 36:54Speaker 4: some emails read because I appreciate the time people take
- 36:58Speaker 4: to write them out, especially when you write them out well.
- 37:02Speaker 4: Stephen writes in a thing that's apparent to me that
- 37:05Speaker 4: I really think is leading to this weird run of
- 37:07Speaker 4: May picks. Recall how Brady almost always threw tight or
- 37:10Speaker 4: high risk passes, particularly short drop quick release efforts with
- 37:14Speaker 4: an eye on making the ball catchable by only one
- 37:17Speaker 4: person on the field, his target. Some would say he
- 37:20Speaker 4: was not accurate at times, but smarter commentators would understand
- 37:23Speaker 4: that those shoelace grabs were by design. Those balls were
- 37:27Speaker 4: going to be caught by his receiver or hit the ground.
- 37:30Speaker 4: They wouldn't be batted, swatted, or popped up. One thing
- 37:33Speaker 4: Drake could focus on to perhaps ease his turnover worries
- 37:37Speaker 4: is to adopt that philosophy. By all means, hoist it,
- 37:40Speaker 4: but if it's a tough catch for the receiver at
- 37:42Speaker 4: the cost of ensuring a safe outcome, do that. Put
- 37:45Speaker 4: it where only your target has a chance. What I'm
- 37:48Speaker 4: seeing is a passer who is too focused on the
- 37:50Speaker 4: receiver's job. He's throwing with one eye on catching it
- 37:54Speaker 4: as well. Let the receiver worry about that. You just
- 37:57Speaker 4: give them the opportunity whilst protecting possession. That's the job,
- 38:02Speaker 4: not being snuggly and considerate to the receiving core.
- 38:05Speaker 2: They get paid to do their job. You get paid
- 38:07Speaker 2: to do yours.
- 38:09Speaker 7: I would say that I think Drake is very conscious
- 38:13Speaker 7: of his ball placement.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Hard.
- 38:15Speaker 10: And I think that this year he just hasn't been
- 38:18Speaker 10: as accurate.
- 38:18Speaker 6: And he's been throwing to covered guys.
- 38:20Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 6: I don't think he's making throws that he's consciously trying
- 38:24Speaker 6: to make it an easier catch for his receiver.
- 38:26Speaker 2: I mean, he threw a ball to Efton Chisholm, but
- 38:27Speaker 2: he wasn't even remotely open. Right.
- 38:29Speaker 6: Like, that wasn't catchable for Efton Chisholm. It was only
- 38:32Speaker 6: catchable for Travis Hunter.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:33Speaker 9: Like the fade balls are all over the place.
- 38:35Speaker 2: I mean, some are in the right spot. Other are
- 38:37Speaker 2: too short.
- 38:37Speaker 9: I mean, it's it sounds great, but I think he's
- 38:40Speaker 9: got to be in the zone with his accuracy too often.
- 38:42Speaker 9: You know, when you're talking about it's funny, I was
- 38:44Speaker 9: actually thinking about I was throwing the football my son yesterday.
- 38:46Speaker 9: I was just thinking about him like, you know, the
- 38:48Speaker 9: thought of like a guy running full speed and you're like,
- 38:51Speaker 9: I'm going to put it on his back shoulder to,
- 38:52Speaker 9: you know, like just the amount of accuracy that NFL quarterbacks,
- 38:55Speaker 9: it's hard to even wrap your head around.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Much less execute, certainly when you're not playing your best football.
- 39:00Speaker 7: I think it was one of the best parts of
- 39:02Speaker 7: his game last year was doing what the emailers talked about,
- 39:05Speaker 7: is throwing guys open and putting the ball exactly.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Where it's supposed to be. Drops right into the bucket.
- 39:10Speaker 10: Pulling the string, hole shots, back shoulders, go balls right
- 39:14Speaker 10: in the bucket.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Have you noticed that at all, Ev, watching, just catching footage?
- 39:18Speaker 2: It was striking to me.
- 39:19Speaker 9: I caught some footage, some highlights, admittedly highlights from last year,
- 39:22Speaker 9: but it just, his level of comfortability He is completely
- 39:26Speaker 9: unaware of what's going on with him.
- 39:28Speaker 2: I keep going back to that quote.
- 39:29Speaker 9: I think it was from Houston who just said he
- 39:31Speaker 9: looks almost too comfortable in the pocket which I kind
- 39:33Speaker 9: of understood because there were times like Drake this guy's
- 39:36Speaker 9: hanging on you you don't even realize it it looks
- 39:38Speaker 9: like a different guy to me right now and I
- 39:40Speaker 9: just I hope he can get back to that level
- 39:42Speaker 9: of confidence and just locked in on you know what's
- 39:44Speaker 9: happening down the field not concerned with you know what's
- 39:47Speaker 9: going around with him but I know that there's footwork conversations.
- 39:50Speaker 10: And I thought he was better about it last week.
- 39:52Speaker 7: I thought he moved around a little bit better in
- 39:54Speaker 7: the pocket last week and actually, uh, avoided some pressure
- 39:57Speaker 7: in that game last week. Um, but obviously when you
- 40:01Speaker 7: have the, the catastrophic plays, no one really cares.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Um, let's see. Anthony is a first time, uh, uh,
- 40:10Speaker 2: emailer from Rhode Island.
- 40:11Speaker 4: Uh, I understand may is playing very poor right now,
- 40:14Speaker 4: but most cute quarterbacks have their guys that they can trust, uh,
- 40:18Speaker 4: And that being said, has Hunter Henry lost a step?
- 40:21Speaker 4: He seems invisible in the passing game. I feel like
- 40:24Speaker 4: that hurt May's game a lot. What do we think
- 40:27Speaker 4: about Hunter Henry?
- 40:28Speaker 6: This is Mike Dussault's best point, I thought, yesterday, talking
- 40:33Speaker 6: about Hunter Henry and guys like him.
- 40:35Speaker 9: Just the free agents you got, and I know Hunter
- 40:38Speaker 9: Henry wasn't one of the guys they got when they
- 40:40Speaker 9: came in, but it's just are those guys aging up
- 40:41Speaker 9: a little bit and Hunter Henry, I have concerns with
- 40:44Speaker 9: him after the touchdown catch he had against the Chargers.
- 40:47Speaker 2: That was a beautiful, great throw by Drake.
- 40:49Speaker 9: That was the last moment I remember him making a
- 40:50Speaker 9: big play. I thought he was quiet down the end
- 40:53Speaker 9: of last year. It's going to happen. They've always just
- 40:57Speaker 9: gotten around his blocking, but I think without Julian Hill, too,
- 41:00Speaker 9: you don't have a tight.
- 41:01Speaker 2: End that you trust to really block.
- 41:03Speaker 9: You have somebody who can get in the way and,
- 41:05Speaker 9: in Evansboro's diet, slow death maybe, but you're not getting
- 41:10Speaker 9: plus blocking out of any of those tight ends. So
- 41:13Speaker 9: I mean, it's a concern. That's why they had to
- 41:15Speaker 9: draft a tight end this year. They had to get
- 41:17Speaker 9: somebody in the pipeline, you know?
- 41:19Speaker 7: I'm encouraged by Raritan. I think Raritan's blocking is better
- 41:22Speaker 7: than I expected it to be out of the shoot.
- 41:24Speaker 10: It's not Gronk level.
- 41:26Speaker 7: Like he's not like a dominant blocker right now, but he's,
- 41:29Speaker 7: he's probably better than their alternative options. And you know,
- 41:32Speaker 7: has a little bit of juice in the passing game,
- 41:34Speaker 7: obviously too. So, you know, if you're going to put
- 41:36Speaker 7: like a pure blocker, like a lot to, or an
- 41:39Speaker 7: arc in like, well now they're not really threats to
- 41:41Speaker 7: catch the ball. I think, you know, the Hunter Henry
- 41:44Speaker 7: thing's interesting. I, I don't know. I watched, you know,
- 41:47Speaker 7: his routes, uh, again the other day, just like thinking like,
- 41:51Speaker 7: are they doing something?
- 41:52Speaker 10: Are they bracketing him? Are they taking him away?
- 41:54Speaker 7: And I do think that there's probably a little bit
- 41:56Speaker 7: of column a and a little bit of column B,
- 41:58Speaker 7: you know, those stick routes and those little options that
- 42:00Speaker 7: they run inside the formation. Everybody knows they're coming.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 42:03Speaker 7: You know, everybody kind of is anticipating that he's going
- 42:06Speaker 7: to be a Drake Mays, you know, go to guy
- 42:09Speaker 7: and those types of concepts and those types of situations.
- 42:13Speaker 7: So maybe, you know, can they have more compliments to
- 42:17Speaker 7: maybe like a stick nod?
- 42:19Speaker 10: Like you hit.
- 42:19Speaker 7: Him with the stick and then you go up the
- 42:21Speaker 7: field and like, you know, they jump the stick and
- 42:23Speaker 7: it's like kind of like a double move, you know,
- 42:25Speaker 7: in the middle of the field, like little things like that, that.
- 42:28Speaker 7: on their base plays, they have compliments off of those
- 42:30Speaker 7: plays to kind of get him loose. Because I do
- 42:33Speaker 7: think that there's a little bit more, you know, when
- 42:35Speaker 7: you play the split safety coverages, there's players in the seams,
- 42:39Speaker 7: like there's safeties over the top of the seam. So
- 42:41Speaker 7: if Hunter Henry runs a seam, he's not open. Like
- 42:44Speaker 7: you can't throw the seam on that. So like, those
- 42:47Speaker 7: are the things that I'm seeing more and more of
- 42:49Speaker 7: is like maybe a little bit more of an effort
- 42:51Speaker 7: to take him away as well.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Did you guys ever feel like, I mean, I hate,
- 42:55Speaker 2: Super Bowl hangover.
- 42:56Speaker 9: But, like, you know, some of these old guys, maybe
- 42:58Speaker 9: I'm wondering if they're taking a little longer to get
- 43:00Speaker 9: ramped up because they played four extra games last year.
- 43:04Speaker 2: They went late. They didn't have the offseason.
- 43:05Speaker 9: Like, that's the, like, little voice of positivity of, like,
- 43:08Speaker 9: Hunter Henry will get back up to speed.
- 43:09Speaker 2: He's just, you know, like that as a positive. No,
- 43:11Speaker 2: you know what I mean? I don't know. I was
- 43:12Speaker 2: going the other way. Did you guys ever notice a
- 43:14Speaker 2: Super Bowl hangover, though? Well, I do.
- 43:17Speaker 6: But, like, with veterans in particular, I just think there's
- 43:20Speaker 6: wear and tear there.
- 43:21Speaker 10: It's a long season.
- 43:22Speaker 6: And I thought the point that you made yesterday– You know,
- 43:25Speaker 6: we're talking about Henry because that's the specific guy, and
- 43:28Speaker 6: he has been conspicuous by his absence in the passing
- 43:30Speaker 6: game so far.
- 43:32Speaker 2: But, you know, Morgan Moses, Robert Spillane, Kevin Byard. Carl Davis.
- 43:38Speaker 6: There are veterans that, you know, Milton Williams. That you
- 43:43Speaker 6: sort of rely on a certain level. It's kind of
- 43:45Speaker 6: like a known commodity.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:47Speaker 6: And I don't think you're getting a known commodity out
- 43:50Speaker 6: of guys that I think were kind of givens. Like,
- 43:53Speaker 6: we'll see how these young guys factor in. You know,
- 43:55Speaker 6: Elijah Ponder and Gabe Ackes are going to, you know,
- 43:57Speaker 6: we're going to give them bigger roles and we'll see
- 43:59Speaker 6: how they handle them. But I think you kind of
- 44:01Speaker 6: went in thinking you were going to get X from
- 44:03Speaker 6: a half dozen or more of those veterans.
- 44:07Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 44:07Speaker 6: And right now, I don't think you've gotten what I
- 44:10Speaker 6: think you.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Probably should have expected.
- 44:12Speaker 4: I think, you know, to me, depth is part of
- 44:14Speaker 4: that equation. So the bullseye is on the Patriots' back.
- 44:19Speaker 4: They're defending AFC champs. They went to the Super Bowl. Teams,
- 44:24Speaker 4: you know, have it out for them. They know Milton
- 44:26Speaker 4: Williams is one of their best players. Don't let Milton
- 44:28Speaker 4: Williams do what he did last year. Here's the tape.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Here's how we're going to do it. you know, and
- 44:33Speaker 4: then you go down the line. And when that's the case,
- 44:36Speaker 4: other guys have to step up to make teams that
- 44:40Speaker 4: do that pay for the focus that they put on
- 44:42Speaker 4: that one player. And if you don't have the depth
- 44:45Speaker 4: to do that, then they're going to take the Williams.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Out of the game.
- 44:48Speaker 9: It goes back to the phrase I said this spring,
- 44:50Speaker 9: are they stuck in nickel? And right now they're stuck
- 44:53Speaker 9: in nickel, at least as far as not having to
- 44:55Speaker 9: put a player on the field that you acquired in September.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Like, you know what I mean?
- 44:58Speaker 9: Like you, got to get Jaden Reed out there or
- 45:01Speaker 9: you got to get Darius Moose out. Like these are
- 45:03Speaker 9: the guys, if you go down to base or you
- 45:05Speaker 9: go up to a nickel, you know, or up to dime,
- 45:08Speaker 9: like that's, you're tapping guys that weren't even here this summer.
- 45:11Speaker 9: And that's just striking to me that this quickly, you know,
- 45:14Speaker 9: I mean, I said to Paul yesterday, I said, the
- 45:16Speaker 9: thing that's frustrating to me is just when we talk
- 45:18Speaker 9: about things from a personnel standpoint in the off season
- 45:21Speaker 9: and we say, you know, I think the edge is
- 45:23Speaker 9: a concern.
- 45:23Speaker 2: I think they need, you know, they're going to need some.
- 45:25Speaker 9: More juice off the edge or, They're going to need depth.
- 45:27Speaker 9: They're going to be stuck in nickel. Who are the
- 45:29Speaker 9: sub package guys that can come on? And now here
- 45:32Speaker 9: we are week four. And a lot of those things
- 45:34Speaker 9: have kind of played out. And I just that's frustrating
- 45:36Speaker 9: to me because it's like kind of a slow motion
- 45:39Speaker 9: train wreck.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And listen, I'm they probably know the same thing.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:43Speaker 2: You know, but it's just just there aren't just solutions that.
- 45:47Speaker 4: There aren't easy solutions to every problem in any sport,
- 45:50Speaker 4: in any league, you know, because other teams need players, too.
- 45:55Speaker 12: Right.
- 45:55Speaker 2: And you never know. So many good players out there.
- 45:57Speaker 2: A really good player. And, you know, becomes that third safety.
- 46:00Speaker 10: Yeah, I agree.
- 46:01Speaker 7: You know, like Milton Williams, I'm not worried about. I
- 46:03Speaker 7: think Milton Williams will be will be fine. But I
- 46:07Speaker 7: think Eli Rairdon right now is pushing.
- 46:10Speaker 2: By the way, really sad news for him. Yes. Sorry. Awful. Yeah.
- 46:15Speaker 7: I think that right now he's probably a better blocker
- 46:18Speaker 7: than Hunter Henry is in the run game, and he's
- 46:21Speaker 7: got more burst and more speed down the field as
- 46:23Speaker 7: a receiver. You said some of the veteran guys are
- 46:28Speaker 7: not playing up to snuff, and I'm not trying to
- 46:30Speaker 7: bench anybody, but at what point does some of the
- 46:33Speaker 7: younger guys.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Just take your lumps with the young guys and get
- 46:36Speaker 2: them ready. It's the Drake conversation.
- 46:38Speaker 7: Travion Henderson... you know, even Lomu. Like, you know, like
- 46:43Speaker 7: any of these guys, like those guys, fresh legs, young legs, right?
- 46:47Speaker 9: Well, that's why, like, I kind of like Ackes and
- 46:51Speaker 9: Ponder getting forced to. It hasn't been perfect, but, like,
- 46:53Speaker 9: and I still think that they need a dude, but
- 46:56Speaker 9: I look at those two guys as, like, in two years,
- 46:59Speaker 9: this could be the makings of a really solid rotation.
- 47:01Speaker 9: You know, I still think you add, you know, an
- 47:03Speaker 9: alpha dog with those, but I think Gabe Ackes looks
- 47:06Speaker 9: like he's going to be a solid NFL player.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I think Christian... I keep calling him Christian.
- 47:09Speaker 9: Elijah Ponder is developing and has shown some development from
- 47:13Speaker 9: last year, coming from a small school, an undrafted guy,
- 47:16Speaker 9: mostly just a pass rusher, still figuring it out.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Dropping in space.
- 47:19Speaker 9: But those are the things where it's like, yeah, we
- 47:21Speaker 9: took some lumps today with Lomu, but he showed some
- 47:24Speaker 9: good stuff too, and we can build off of that.
- 47:26Speaker 9: And now maybe we're going to have our two bookend
- 47:28Speaker 9: tackles for the next few years.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Antoine writes in from Montreal.
- 47:30Speaker 4: I'm a police officer and watching May lately and some
- 47:33Speaker 4: of what I'm seeing with Dobbs, I keep thinking.
- 47:35Speaker 2: About the young officers I coach.
- 47:38Speaker 4: A lot of our Gen Z recruits want feedback but
- 47:40Speaker 4: need constant reassurance and some really struggle when the pressure hits.
- 47:44Speaker 4: They can know what to do in training, then get
- 47:47Speaker 4: in their own heads when real situation goes wrong. We
- 47:50Speaker 4: used to see offices burn out after 10 or 15 years.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Now I'm seeing it after a year or two.
- 47:55Speaker 4: I wonder if part of it comes from growing up
- 47:57Speaker 4: with adults stepping into fixed problems before they had to
- 48:01Speaker 4: sit with failure.
- 48:02Speaker 2: Then they enter a job where there's no redo.
- 48:05Speaker 4: I don't know what's going on in May's head, but
- 48:07Speaker 4: I recognize that look when someone has a rough stretch
- 48:09Speaker 4: and starts pressing even harder. I mean, even Rabel said it.
- 48:12Speaker 4: I've learned that trying to toughen up a struggling recruit
- 48:15Speaker 4: by being hard on him usually backfires. Listening and helping
- 48:20Speaker 4: him rebuild his confidence works better. So how should the
- 48:23Speaker 4: coaches handle May when the pressure starts piling up?
- 48:27Speaker 2: Good luck, guys.
- 48:27Speaker 4: The Gen Z roller coaster has reached the NFL, and
- 48:30Speaker 4: they'll be running your offices soon enough.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Well, we've talked about this before.
- 48:34Speaker 9: I think it was kind of a Celtics conversation of like,
- 48:36Speaker 9: you know, it started as that, as like, are these
- 48:37Speaker 9: guys killers anymore? Like, are they obsessed with winning anymore?
- 48:40Speaker 9: Or do they like winning, but they also like everything
- 48:43Speaker 9: else too? And again, I hate being like the.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Young kids are ruining the world. It's always kind of
- 48:47Speaker 2: like that.
- 48:48Speaker 9: I think every generation, every old generation is always like
- 48:52Speaker 9: the young people today just don't get it.
- 48:53Speaker 2: I think that's throughout history.
- 48:55Speaker 9: Um, but I do think that there's something maybe interesting
- 48:58Speaker 9: about this younger generation that it doesn't really respond the
- 49:01Speaker 9: same way to some of the stuff that our generations might.
- 49:04Speaker 9: And the way that the, um, the emailer, and I
- 49:06Speaker 9: thought that was really insightful talking about training, you know,
- 49:09Speaker 9: and whatnot. But the, the, the one nitpick that I
- 49:12Speaker 9: would have, you know, you said like, They seem like
- 49:15Speaker 9: they grow up with parents fixing their problems for them.
- 49:19Speaker 9: I think it's less a problem with that because I
- 49:21Speaker 9: think parents have kind of always been supportive in different ways.
- 49:25Speaker 6: But these kids never failed because we always.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Told them, no, no, no, no, you won. You won.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Here's your trophy. Here's your ribbon.
- 49:33Speaker 5: Oh, no, no.
- 49:33Speaker 2: That was a great job.
- 49:34Speaker 6: You finished in 28th out of 32.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Great job. Did you do your best? To me, it's
- 49:39Speaker 2: more of a mindset. You know what I mean?
- 49:41Speaker 4: But in our day, Paul, we had more unstructured time
- 49:45Speaker 4: where there wasn't any supervision.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Where you could fail.
- 49:48Speaker 4: So you got into a fight on the street. That
- 49:51Speaker 4: was it or whatever, you know?
- 49:54Speaker 6: So what I'm saying is you just lost your lunch money.
- 49:58Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 49:58Speaker 4: But these things happen more often without supervision.
- 50:03Speaker 2: So you did have to deal with stuff on your own.
- 50:05Speaker 4: You did have to figure things out.
- 50:08Speaker 2: But you could fail.
- 50:09Speaker 6: And there was, you know, to Fred's point, now a
- 50:12Speaker 6: kid fails and it's like on the Little League diamond
- 50:15Speaker 6: and everybody's watching.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Oh, you struck out.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:18Speaker 6: And that's where the parent has to be like, no,
- 50:20Speaker 6: did you do your best?
- 50:21Speaker 2: It was okay. Because you have to. Otherwise, your kid's
- 50:23Speaker 2: going to be a basket case.
- 50:25Speaker 6: So I do think there is part of what Fred's
- 50:27Speaker 6: talking about.
- 50:28Speaker 7: I would just say for Drake May in particular, I
- 50:30Speaker 7: think he hasn't failed a lot because he's really good.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Athletic adversity.
- 50:36Speaker 6: This could be the first time in his life he's
- 50:38Speaker 6: really faced athletic adversity.
- 50:40Speaker 7: Yeah, because he's been the best athlete his entire life.
- 50:43Speaker 7: So I don't necessarily think it's like, that we, that
- 50:46Speaker 7: he was coddled or anything like that.
- 50:48Speaker 10: I don't, I don't think that it's like he was.
- 50:50Speaker 7: A prodigy in North Carolina in the state of North Carolina.
- 50:53Speaker 7: Then he went to the hometown school and like really
- 50:56Speaker 7: could do not a lot of wrong there because he,
- 50:58Speaker 7: the hometown kid actually stayed for a program that wasn't
- 51:01Speaker 7: really like he could have gone to Alabama. And he
- 51:04Speaker 7: didn't because he wanted to stay home and play for
- 51:07Speaker 7: Matt Brown at North Carolina. Then he gets drafted third overall.
- 51:10Speaker 7: Then he has an MVP caliber season in his second year.
- 51:13Speaker 7: There hasn't been a lot of adversity for Drake May.
- 51:15Speaker 9: No, neither for Trevor Lawrence when he came in.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Remember just his obscene winning record. He's another guy who's
- 51:21Speaker 2: kind of fought through those things. And he went through it.
- 51:23Speaker 6: Now maybe he's come out the other side. The last
- 51:26Speaker 6: half of the year, last year. And again, I made
- 51:28Speaker 6: this comment last week. This is year six for Trevor Lawrence,
- 51:31Speaker 6: not year three.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Right. There's a big difference there.
- 51:34Speaker 7: Yeah, and I think that, like, Drake may have lost
- 51:38Speaker 7: in college, but he lost playing at North Carolina, where
- 51:41Speaker 7: there wasn't really expectations for them to be a national champion.
- 51:44Speaker 7: So it was a little bit different. He got them
- 51:47Speaker 7: his sophomore year, his first year as a starter there.
- 51:50Speaker 7: He got them to a big bowl game in the
- 51:52Speaker 7: ACC championship game, and that was the farthest that they
- 51:54Speaker 7: had been in a while. So even though he failed,
- 51:57Speaker 7: they lost the game pretty handily, but he got them there,
- 52:01Speaker 7: and that was considered a victory for them.
- 52:03Speaker 2: Expectations. And let's face it.
- 52:08Speaker 4: What they did last year has raised expectations for this year.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Like, I expected them to win the AFC East. Yeah. Okay,
- 52:16Speaker 2: right now it's not looking very good. No.
- 52:18Speaker 9: And these things we're talking about, too, aren't quite as tangible,
- 52:21Speaker 9: but I think a tangible thing is just social media
- 52:24Speaker 9: now and criticism. And, you know, especially here in Boston,
- 52:27Speaker 9: I mean, it's, you know, you can not turn on
- 52:29Speaker 9: the radio and, you know, not hear any of it,
- 52:31Speaker 9: but you also got to stay off social media because
- 52:33Speaker 9: you're going to get, all kinds of criticism. And I
- 52:35Speaker 9: think that's an adjustment too, for people who have always
- 52:39Speaker 9: kind of been told like, you've been great. And all
- 52:40Speaker 9: of a sudden you have, you know, especially for like Drake,
- 52:43Speaker 9: who went from the absolute darling.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Of new England and t-shirts and nicknames. And we love
- 52:47Speaker 2: Drake and he's our guy now.
- 52:49Speaker 9: And now it's, there's probably a good portion of people
- 52:52Speaker 9: that have turned on him.
- 52:53Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Not to, you know, go off the tracks too much,
- 52:56Speaker 4: but I was really interested to hear about Cam Schlittler, who,
- 53:01Speaker 4: embraces social media.
- 53:02Speaker 2: And actually goes back at fans. But I think when
- 53:05Speaker 2: you're like the Cy Young guy, you can do that, right?
- 53:07Speaker 6: Well, he feeds off of it. But that's not for everybody.
- 53:10Speaker 1: No.
- 53:10Speaker 6: Like, he feeds off the negativity that he gets because
- 53:13Speaker 6: he gets a lot of static and he talks about it.
- 53:15Speaker 2: But he openly talks about it. But he's not going
- 53:17Speaker 2: through any problems. You know what I mean? He doesn't
- 53:20Speaker 2: look like it. It might be different. Like, I grew
- 53:22Speaker 2: up around here. He knows. You go out and win
- 53:24Speaker 2: the Cy Young.
- 53:25Speaker 6: Well, I mean, I don't want to wish this on anyone, especially, like,
- 53:28Speaker 6: he's a Northeastern guy.
- 53:29Speaker 2: So I have, like, that.
- 53:30Speaker 10: Oh, did he go to Northeastern? Is he from Walpole?
- 53:32Speaker 6: Stop being a baby.
- 53:34Speaker 10: Is Ben Rice from Cohasset?
- 53:36Speaker 2: Yes, he is.
- 53:37Speaker 6: And he also wore a Yankees jacket when everybody else
- 53:40Speaker 6: had the Red Sox. That was the first time I've
- 53:42Speaker 6: ever heard that.
- 53:43Speaker 10: No, that's a great story.
- 53:46Speaker 6: I don't wish this on anybody, but what's inevitable for
- 53:48Speaker 6: a young pitcher, especially one who throws 100, he's probably
- 53:51Speaker 6: going to have Tommy John surgery within the next two years.
- 53:55Speaker 6: I wonder how social media will treat him then, you know,
- 53:58Speaker 6: when he's not available for a team.
- 54:00Speaker 2: And then how does he deal with that? Because New
- 54:01Speaker 2: York is very, you know, forgiving. Yeah, right.
- 54:04Speaker 6: So, like, there are some things, I mean, it's easy
- 54:07Speaker 6: to sit there and say, well, just stay off of it.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 54:09Speaker 6: That's what I do. But I didn't grow up with it.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Oh, no, I know. It's so much more ingrained in there.
- 54:13Speaker 6: It's a little different for these kids.
- 54:14Speaker 2: You're not addicted.
- 54:15Speaker 4: Franklin in Baltimore, the main thing defenses are asking, I'll
- 54:18Speaker 4: say forcing, Drake May to do, is to be patient,
- 54:22Speaker 4: in time, and anticipatory, uh, be an anticipatory passer, mainly
- 54:26Speaker 4: targeting passes in the middle of the field, which is
- 54:29Speaker 4: why Drake's impatient comment from the first game was telling,
- 54:32Speaker 4: because it's a play style that goes directly against his
- 54:35Speaker 4: natural abilities and instincts.
- 54:37Speaker 2: This doesn't mean he won't.
- 54:38Speaker 4: Grow that element of his game, but as we've already seen,
- 54:41Speaker 4: there will be growing pains.
- 54:44Speaker 2: I think that's an excellent email. Yeah.
- 54:47Speaker 9: I mean, I think every quarterback, that comes into this
- 54:50Speaker 9: league has to learn how to be a quarterback and
- 54:52Speaker 9: you come in with a certain set of skills, but
- 54:54Speaker 9: there's like a real art to being a quarterback and
- 54:56Speaker 9: patience and, you know, understanding when to fight another day and,
- 55:00Speaker 9: you know, not taking unnecessary hits. And it's, it's a
- 55:02Speaker 9: really complicated job. I mean, it's so hard right out
- 55:05Speaker 9: of the get-go, but even like the nuances you get
- 55:07Speaker 9: into the details of it later, it's just, it's, it's
- 55:10Speaker 9: amazing that these guys are able to do everything.
- 55:12Speaker 6: And just because he was impatient in Seattle doesn't mean
- 55:14Speaker 6: he will always be impatient when forced to do that. Yeah.
- 55:17Speaker 6: So there's definitely room to grow.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Rick in Riverside, Rhode Island, his two cents is actually
- 55:23Speaker 2: three cents. He's got three points.
- 55:25Speaker 4: In 2025, it took until week five for May and
- 55:28Speaker 4: Diggs to really start clicking. May does not look comfortable
- 55:31Speaker 4: after three weeks, but I think he will eventually find
- 55:33Speaker 4: his groove with the new wide receiver room.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Two, Lomu will be starting sooner than later.
- 55:39Speaker 4: Doesn't say where. And three, we need kicker competition. Okay, three. Two,
- 55:46Speaker 4: I hope he will start. Because he's first-round pick, right?
- 55:51Speaker 6: Yeah, but I think the plan is that he's not
- 55:53Speaker 6: going to start.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Eventually, he will be a starter on this team.
- 55:57Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 55:58Speaker 9: But, I mean, there's a great chance in my mind
- 56:01Speaker 9: that we're going to go out to practice in a
- 56:03Speaker 9: couple hours, and Moromo isn't going to be there, and
- 56:05Speaker 9: Caleb Lumo is going to be your starting right tackle. Yeah,
- 56:06Speaker 9: but that's a Wednesday thing. That would be my guess.
- 56:10Speaker 9: If it's a Sunday thing, I'll be stunned.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Mike in Philly.
- 56:15Speaker 4: Says, I'm obviously a Bills fan, but as a sports fan,
- 56:18Speaker 4: I have great respect for the Patriots dynasty and the
- 56:20Speaker 4: Brady years. My favorite Brady win is the AFC Championship
- 56:24Speaker 4: in Kansas City in 18. What are your general feelings
- 56:27Speaker 4: on the Bills' chances this year or their Achilles heel? Obviously,
- 56:31Speaker 4: we have been extremely close, and I've always felt winning
- 56:36Speaker 4: the second time is the hardest when trying to win
- 56:40Speaker 4: a championship.
- 56:41Speaker 2: I don't know. You've got to have a first time, right?
- 56:44Speaker 4: Any silver lining you can give me where my Bill
- 56:46Speaker 4: season won't end in heartbreak again.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Oh, this is Bill's fan?
- 56:50Speaker 4: Well, I think, no, I think, listen, you know, welcome
- 56:53Speaker 4: to the show. I think you've got a new coach.
- 56:56Speaker 4: And so, like, look at it as a clean slate.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:59Speaker 7: I think the only thing stopping the Bills is the Bills.
- 57:01Speaker 7: If the Bills play their A game in the playoffs,
- 57:04Speaker 7: I think their A game is better than anybody else's.
- 57:06Speaker 7: When Josh Allen turns the ball over five times.
- 57:09Speaker 9: See where the defense ends up. Like, you know, and
- 57:11Speaker 9: are they ready to go toe-to-toe? Like, can they stop?
- 57:14Speaker 9: Can they hold them to 32?
- 57:14Speaker 6: They've got to be able to be better defensively and
- 57:18Speaker 6: not put it all on Josh Allen. Or one time
- 57:20Speaker 6: out of those three. three games or four games, he's
- 57:23Speaker 6: going to have one of those games. It's just inevitable.
- 57:25Speaker 6: But I would say I didn't feel, the way Evan
- 57:28Speaker 6: just said it, I agree with him now, I didn't
- 57:31Speaker 6: feel that way coming into the season, that the Bills
- 57:34Speaker 6: can only stop the Bills, that they're the best team.
- 57:37Speaker 6: It's a very small sample.
- 57:38Speaker 2: It's three weeks.
- 57:39Speaker 6: Based on what little I've seen, I think the Bills
- 57:41Speaker 6: have as much or more talent than everybody else in
- 57:44Speaker 6: the AFC.
- 57:47Speaker 2: I didn't think that.
- 57:49Speaker 6: Coming in, but I've kind of watched Baltimore looks like Baltimore.
- 57:53Speaker 2: They're good.
- 57:54Speaker 6: And they're inconsistent. That's kind of what Baltimore has been. Um,
- 57:58Speaker 6: I don't think anything of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati. I'm a little
- 58:02Speaker 6: intrigued by their defensive resurgence here, despite last week.
- 58:06Speaker 10: I was going to say not so great.
- 58:07Speaker 6: Um, I mean, but I, I just looked at that game,
- 58:09Speaker 6: another red zone thing, like a bunch of coverage breakdowns,
- 58:14Speaker 6: like just wide open, three wide open guys for touchdowns. Um,
- 58:19Speaker 6: Kansas City with Kenneth Walker. I want to see what
- 58:22Speaker 6: that looks like toward the end of the year based
- 58:24Speaker 6: on the workload that they're giving Kenneth Walker. And, you know,
- 58:28Speaker 6: I think Kansas City is good again. But I kind
- 58:32Speaker 6: of agree with Evan. Based on what I've seen in
- 58:34Speaker 6: the little three weeks, I think Buffalo's is good, if
- 58:37Speaker 6: not better than all of those.
- 58:38Speaker 10: I don't know if I felt that way.
- 58:41Speaker 6: I didn't feel it going into the year.
- 58:42Speaker 10: Post-Diggs era.
- 58:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:44Speaker 7: Bills, but I feel that way about Buffalo for the
- 58:47Speaker 7: majority of the 2020s. If they play their best and
- 58:52Speaker 7: Josh Allen plays his best, he's the best quarterback in
- 58:54Speaker 7: the league, and I see them winning a Super Bowl.
- 58:56Speaker 7: But every time we get into the playoffs, whether it's
- 58:59Speaker 7: the defense letting them down, the turnovers, they always get
- 59:01Speaker 7: in their own way.
- 59:02Speaker 6: And they always have fumbles, right? So the numbers I'm
- 59:06Speaker 6: going to spout are not counting because he's fumbled a lot, too.
- 59:10Speaker 6: But in 15 playoff games, he has 28 touchdowns and
- 59:14Speaker 6: six interceptions. That should translate to a better than 8-7 record.
- 59:18Speaker 6: Do you know what I mean? And again, I know
- 59:21Speaker 6: he fumbles, too, so that's not giving you the whole story.
- 59:24Speaker 6: He's turned it over more than six times, personally. His
- 59:28Speaker 6: individual turnover is They come up short when it matters most.
- 59:32Speaker 6: And I say they, not him. It's not always him.
- 59:35Speaker 6: In Denver last year, he was a big part of
- 59:37Speaker 6: falling short. That hasn't always been the case when Buffalo loses.
- 59:41Speaker 2: What will be the case this year?
- 59:43Speaker 9: My thing is, how long can he continue to take
- 59:45Speaker 9: hits and be Josh Allen? I think his ability to
- 59:48Speaker 9: absorb contact and be that plow that he can be
- 59:51Speaker 9: at certain times where it's so frustrating, you've got everybody covered,
- 59:53Speaker 9: and he just.
- 59:54Speaker 2: choo-choos right through the middle of your defense.
- 59:56Speaker 4: Well, Dylan from Florida wants to know if there's any
- 59:57Speaker 4: credence to the Josh Allen injury with his left knee.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: He took a good shot against the Chargers and was
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: seen with a visible limp afterwards.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah. He's always limping. Yeah, we'll see. But it adds up.
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: I didn't even know he was hurt.
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: The wild card of him is that at some point,
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: he gets up from some hits, you're like, geez, that
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: looked bad.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: When you get to 31, 32, those hits start to.
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: Add up over the course of the season, and that's
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: why I was you know, just so impressed with how
- 1:00:26Speaker 9: they came out where they're just like, screw it. We're
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: going right to what we do best. And that's how
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: we're going to win games. Can they sustain it through
- 1:00:32Speaker 9: the season? If they can, they very well could end up.
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: Reminds me a lot of Cam, you know, like Cam,
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: it wasn't, some like catastrophic injury. It was like a
- 1:00:41Speaker 7: slow deterioration of wear and tear over years and years
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: of being a dual threat. Like he's basically like almost
- 1:00:49Speaker 7: the same size. There's Josh Allen's six, five, 240 pounds.
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: So he gets away with running and being reckless like
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: that with his body because he's huge. Like he's bigger
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: than most of the defensive players trying to tackle him
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: in the open field.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: And when you add size with speed, That's like a
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: freight train.
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: Well, it's literally, it's like Gronk-ish. Like, it's literally a
- 1:01:08Speaker 10: freight train in the open field.
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: But I think he also, too, he could very well
- 1:01:11Speaker 9: have a Roethlisberger-type second half of his career where maybe
- 1:01:15Speaker 9: he isn't quite the running threat, but he's still a
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: load to bring down. He's hard, and if he can
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: stay in the pocket, hold guys off for a minute,
- 1:01:21Speaker 9: you know, that might be his route to sustain things
- 1:01:23Speaker 9: into his 30s. But I have trouble seeing 33-, 34-year-old
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: Josh Allen making these plays where he's diving into the
- 1:01:30Speaker 9: end zone.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: He's going to have to adjust at some point if
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: he wants to extend his career.
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: They say it every year, and then the first third
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: down of the season, he's taking on linebackers.
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: I would worry just about the right arm, right? Like,
- 1:01:41Speaker 7: you know, it's not so much about like his, because
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: you're right, like he could reinvent himself later on in
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: his career as a pocket passer that can kind of.
- 1:01:48Speaker 10: Just like stave off guys and stuff like that.
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: But if he keeps taking hits to his shoulder and
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: to his right arm, then that's what happened to Cam.
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: The arm started to go because of all the wear
- 1:01:58Speaker 7: and tear on his shoulder.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: All right. Time for a break.

- 1:04:41Speaker 3: Looking forward to is when they do the bus placement.
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: They put your permanent place in the hall, the hall
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: of bus where everybody's in there. That, if you've never
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: been in there, I get goosebumps thinking about it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 11: Time for another episode of Pats from the Past podcast.
- 1:04:58Speaker 11: It's Matt Smith with Hall of Fame kicker Adam Vinatieri.
- 1:05:01Speaker 11: Thank you for letting us into your home and doing this.
- 1:05:03Speaker 11: We greatly appreciate it. Great to have you here. And
- 1:05:05Speaker 11: I just wanted to really kind of focus on the
- 1:05:07Speaker 11: Hall of Fame because you're going in. And I think
- 1:05:10Speaker 11: all Patriot fans have breathed a sigh of relief.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: I mean, it's not like a long lost time.
- 1:05:16Speaker 11: But was there a time, Adam, where you ever thought
- 1:05:18Speaker 11: when you were playing, was it ever in New England?
- 1:05:20Speaker 11: Was it some point in time in Indianapolis that a
- 1:05:23Speaker 11: Hall of Fame career happened?
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Was even possible.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: Growing up as a kid, I never, ever fathomed that.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: It's a dream and a goal. Hey, I want to
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: play in the National Football League. But to think that
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: you're one of 387 guys, 387 total that are in
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: the Hall of Fame, to be one of those guys, yeah,
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: that's absolutely amazing. I think the first time that it
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: The thought of that potentially becoming a reality was probably
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: toward the end of my New England career when I
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: would talk to some of the national media and they're like, oh,
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: you're a shoo-in. You're going to make it. And I'm like,
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: I don't feel like I've done enough yet. I feel
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: like my career is only beginning. halfway through. I felt
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: like there's a lot of chapters still in this book
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: that I have to write and have to do a
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: good job. I just didn't feel like there was enough
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: stats yet. And I think as I got close to
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: and then eclipsed the all-time leading scorer, I felt like
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: that was the point. At that point, I felt like, okay,
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: I think I've got there.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Hopefully.
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: You talk about careers and you spent 10 years with
- 1:06:32Speaker 11: people in New England.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: And so you know how New Englanders are.
- 1:06:35Speaker 15: We're very parochial.
- 1:06:36Speaker 11: And so I think people might just think, well, yeah,
- 1:06:39Speaker 11: he had 10 years with the Patriots. You played 14
- 1:06:42Speaker 11: years with the Colts. Do you look at it You
- 1:06:45Speaker 11: played 24 years in the National Football League, but is
- 1:06:48Speaker 11: it almost like two separate careers?
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: I say it all the time. I played two full careers. Like,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: the league average is three and a half years, right?
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: And so, I mean, you make that, you're doing something, right?
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: If you play a decade in the National Football League,
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: that's an incredible long career, right?
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: I knew by then, I was 32, I knew I
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: had a lot of gas left in the tank at
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: that point. I never thought like, hey, I've got to
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: make a certain amount of years or a certain amount
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: of time. I just kept playing because I loved it
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: and I felt like As long as I can contribute
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: in a positive way, if I can help my team
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: win games, if I can be a good leader and
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: a good captain and help our team win, there's nothing
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: else I'd rather do. Put a helmet on, go out
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: onto a field, and you get paid to play a game?
- 1:07:37Speaker 15: Are you kidding me? Who wouldn't want to do this, right?
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: To all the people listening, it's not always just fun
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: and games and roses. There's a lot of work that
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: goes into it. There's injuries and surgeries and whatever. seasons
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: that you know were less than great and not all
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: seasons are not all games and not all seasons are
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: the same amount of fun right like there's there's some
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: years that are exceptionally awesome and there's other ones that
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: if your team's not doing well you don't make the
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: playoffs there's there's some bad days in there too but
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: um yeah no I there's nothing on the planet that
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: I would rather have done than strap on a helmet
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: and be a be a be an NFL football.
- 1:08:13Speaker 11: Player so two years ago you get on the ballot
- 1:08:17Speaker 11: Was there a sense of disappointment when you didn't get in?
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: Um, yeah, I mean, I, I would say like, like you,
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: you always want to make it right. You want to in, in,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: to be considered a first ballot. Like there's nothing, there's
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: no distinguishing there that, Oh, this guy's a first and
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: this guy's a 10th or a second or this or whatever.
- 1:08:38Speaker 15: Like that, that doesn't go into the conversation. You're a
- 1:08:41Speaker 15: hall of famer.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: You're not right. But, um, I was hoping to make
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: it my first year. Obviously I do know I got
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: a little bit, you know, the, the birds were whispering that,
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: you know, being a kicker might be difficult to get
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: in as a first ballot guy, but I didn't have
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: to wait too long. The next year I made it in,
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: and just to be even in those conversations, I think
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: I made it to the final seven my first year,
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: but I didn't make the final cut. They only took four,
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: not five. they can only take up to five, but
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: they only took four that year. So, you know, just
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: to be even to make it to that, like I
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: see the list of guys initially, the 150 guys that
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: get cut down and get cut down and get cut down.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: And then, you know, I look at those guys and
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my gosh, this list is incredible. You know,
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: there's lots of studs on this list, like all these
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: guys deserve. And especially when you get to the bottom
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: 2025 guys, you're like, I wouldn't want to have to
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: vote on that. Like, how do you distinguish this guy
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: versus this guy? I mean, there's so many great players
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: in that. So even just to be nominated and be
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: in that, that the conversations was an honor, but yeah,
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: you know, I selfishly, I wanted to make it the
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: first go around, but waiting next year, wasn't a big deal.
- 1:09:50Speaker 11: So guys like Peyton, who that's a first ballot. There's
- 1:09:53Speaker 11: no debate. Tom, when his name comes up, there's not
- 1:09:55Speaker 11: going to be a debate. Richard Seymour, there's going to
- 1:09:58Speaker 11: be debate.
- 1:09:59Speaker 15: Ty law. There's going to be debate. A kicker. There's
- 1:10:01Speaker 15: going to be debate.
- 1:10:03Speaker 11: Was it interesting kind of hearing about the process and
- 1:10:06Speaker 11: maybe talking to Big C or talking to Ty? How
- 1:10:09Speaker 11: was it for you or other people maybe that went
- 1:10:11Speaker 11: through it? Was it an interesting learning process for you
- 1:10:14Speaker 11: to see what went into it? Yeah, I think so.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: And I think it's kind of a stressful situation for
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: everybody too. It's outside of your control, your realm. You're
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: sitting back and just hoping that your presenters do a
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: good job. I know Ron Borges and Mike Chappell with
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: the Colts and Ron Borges with the Patriots I know
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: they presented me and they presented you know the talking
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: points and then every the voters debate on yes no
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: why they think it is or isn't or whatever and
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: you don't really hear the ins and outs of that
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: you just you know you know that they're going to
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: bat for you and hopefully they're doing a good job
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: and and hopefully they believe in you, they have conviction,
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: and they actually believe what they're throwing out there and stuff.
- 1:10:56Speaker 3: So yeah, everybody has their own story. I love talking
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: to the fellas about their process. The funny thing is,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: back in the day, Morton Anderson told me when he
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: didn't go in initially, but back then they're all at
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: a hotel at the Super Bowl, and they get the
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: knock on the door at the Super Bowl that tells you,
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: and And Morton told me a story about, uh, his
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: wife ordered a club sandwich and, uh, and the, and
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: the people knock on the door to present, you know,
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: to bring this and Morton's like, Oh my God, I
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: made it opens up the.
- 1:11:31Speaker 15: Door and his room service.
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: He's like, so he told his wife, he's like, never again,
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: you order anything on that day.
- 1:11:37Speaker 15: So, so it's better this way.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Like I had no idea that they were coming and
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: knocking on the door. And, uh, and when they knocked
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: on the door and I saw Morton there and his
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: school jacket, I knew what that meant instantly.
- 1:11:47Speaker 15: And so, uh, Yeah.
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: No.
- 1:11:51Speaker 15: What's up, buddy? My man. Hard to put that even
- 1:11:55Speaker 15: into words.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: I think I got teary-eyed just because just the emotion
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: of what it meant was pretty awesome.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: It's Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of the Week.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Legal Seafoods is giving fans a true taste of Boston
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: this season as the official seafood restaurant of the New
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: England Patriots. Pre-game or post-game, get the seafood you love
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: at your local restaurant today.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Go to LegalSeafoods.com. You know what, Paul? You know what
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: the worst thing? Not the worst thing, but one of
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: the bad things that would happen two road games in
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: a row? No chowder?
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: No chowder. No legal seafood chowder. But you have a
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: legal seafood fresh take.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:12:42Speaker 6: And, you know, everybody's obviously talking a lot about Drake
- 1:12:46Speaker 6: May this week.
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: And, you know, with good reason.
- 1:12:48Speaker 6: It's been a slow start to the season, to say
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: the least. So what do they need to do? What
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: did Drake May need to do to get fixed? Well,
- 1:12:53Speaker 6: you've got to find a way, Drake. You've got to
- 1:12:55Speaker 6: protect the football, man. You've got to avoid the mistakes.
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: Don't turn it over. I'm going all Drew Bledsoe in
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: 2001 at the Super Bowl.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Screw that.
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: Go out there and sling it. That's the Patriots' best
- 1:13:07Speaker 6: path to a victory in Buffalo is to spread them
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: out and shred what I think is a gettable secondary
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: in Buffalo. He might make some mistakes. May might make
- 1:13:17Speaker 6: a few mistakes along the way. But I think the
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: best way to get him back in a good mindset,
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: a good, you know, good headspace is to get be
- 1:13:25Speaker 6: have a really good productive passing day on Sunday in
- 1:13:29Speaker 6: Orchard Park. And I think the best way to do
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: that and have that happen is to let him just
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: go out and let it rip.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: So I'm not saying you go two minute, but you
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: go no huddle and speed things up.
- 1:13:39Speaker 7: So they are dead. They are dead last in the
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: league right now in tempo. And I thought that they
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: were going to up the tempo this year. That was
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: the whole conversation.
- 1:13:46Speaker 6: And I don't have my excuse from last year where
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: they're winning every game, and.
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: That's why they're slowing it down.
- 1:13:50Speaker 10: No, I thought that was the whole thing.
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: In training camp, they were getting on the ball faster,
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: and they were doing some of that, and they haven't
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: done it.
- 1:13:58Speaker 10: I think everything's on the table.
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: Everything's on the table to try to wake it up,
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: whether it's moving, going faster, whatever the case may be, but...
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: I was watching the clip of Brady. It wasn't like
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: a football life or something like that, that he says
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: that in the interview. And I had to follow him
- 1:14:14Speaker 7: on and just was like, what are you watching? And
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: I was like, Oh, just like 2001, you know, like
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: six games, three games to glory, like nothing.
- 1:14:22Speaker 10: And she was like, she was like, you're such a nerd.
- 1:14:25Speaker 10: And I was like, yeah, I know.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: Healthy on days, Freddie. Yeah. All right.
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: That is your legal seafood fresh take of the week.
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: Let's go to the phones, the unnamed hotline yet. 855-PATS-500.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: Paul's Car Fund Hotline.
- 1:14:44Speaker 15: Is the hotline.
- 1:14:44Speaker 10: The rust is what gets me. Every time I see
- 1:14:47Speaker 10: it in the parking lot.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: There's a lot of rust?
- 1:14:49Speaker 10: It's like rusting off.
- 1:14:50Speaker 9: Do you know how many times that car has gone
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: between Peabody and Foxborough?
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: If I have to change a tire at some point soon,
- 1:14:57Speaker 6: I'm going to have a hard time.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: You know when you put the jack on the side?
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: That's right where all the rust is.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: I might have a hard time. How many years have
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: you had this vehicle? I don't know.
- 1:15:08Speaker 10: Let's see.
- 1:15:09Speaker 15: I think I got it in 15.
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: Nine years?
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: 11 years.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Maybe less than that. Maybe 250 round trips a year.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: It's a 2013, but I bought it used. So I
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: don't know exactly how long.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's a 13-year-old car.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it's still fighting.
- 1:15:27Speaker 10: I just don't know how it rusts like that.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Yeah, what's going on? Well, he lets it sit out
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: Wednesday sometimes. Because it lives by the ocean. It's all
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: that salt air. Right, right. All the salt that kicks out.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: I live that close to the ocean. In California, the
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: cars don't get salty and chewed up. It's easier to
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: keep them longer. But driving with all the salt here
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: and stuff, man. I think it's the salt on the road.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Tears it all up. I'm sorry.
- 1:15:46Speaker 10: I didn't mean to make fun of your car.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: My car deserves to be made fun of.
- 1:15:50Speaker 10: It's been doing great. I just love it.
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: It's holding on. It's a relic.
- 1:15:53Speaker 10: It's gotten back and forth over 3,000 times.
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: There's no duct tape on it, although it could use
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: some in the front. I don't want to get started
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: with that.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: Get Paul a car. Go fund me. Let's go to
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: Tim in Virginia. What's up, Tim? Can you all hear me? Yes,
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: we can.
- 1:16:13Speaker 5: All right, so this morning I saw a video from
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: the Greg Hill Show on Twitter. I don't know if
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: you guys have seen it.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: No one else has either. They were talking about.
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: How there could be issues between Mike Rabel and Drake May,
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: and they were also talking about how Drake isn't one
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: of Mike Rabel's guys. I don't personally believe that. I
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: think that's a load of B.S., But I wanted to
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: ask if you believe there's any issues between the head
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: coach and quarterback. And I'll take it off the air.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: Thanks, guys.
- 1:16:44Speaker 10: Okay.
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: I mean, we only know what we can see and hear.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: But the way Vrabel treats him on the sideline in
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: the worst of times doesn't sound like there's issues between them.
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: No.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: I mean, he's got his arms.
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: But, yeah, I have not seen anything. And when Mike
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: Vrabel came here, I know the Jets wanted him, you know,
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: as one team. I'm sure there were other teams that–
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: were open at the time. I think the Raiders job
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: was open at the time, ultimately went to Pete Carroll.
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: What I'm trying to say is he could have chosen
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: where he went.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: So at what point did he start not liking him?
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: Was it during the MVP season that he was having
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: last year or sometime over the last three weeks?
- 1:17:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I have no idea about any of that. But
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: I would go back to what Paul was saying is
- 1:17:28Speaker 7: that one of the first things that Mike Rabel was
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: asked in his introductory press conference is why other than
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: like your attachment or your ties to New England, why here?
- 1:17:37Speaker 10: He said Drake May.
- 1:17:39Speaker 7: He said he can see it in Drake May, and
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: he wanted to coach Drake May, and they have a quarterback,
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: and that's an enticing job to take over a team
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: with a young quarterback like that. So that's what I'm
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: going off of.
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: And I don't know what Greg Hill said, and I
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: don't know what his premise is or what his source.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Is.
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: Now, I would also be defensive for Greg. That's probably
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: how Mike Vrabel felt before he got here. Now, maybe
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: there is a rift between the two that developed since
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: he's gotten here and gotten to know him. But again,
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: I'm with you guys. I've never seen anything that would
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: lead me to believe that. And to Fred's point, to
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: the contrary, it looks like he's been very supportive Mike
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: Vrabel has toward Drake.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Matt Morrell, you got something to say?
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: Greg Hill reported that Wiggy and himself have an inside
- 1:18:23Speaker 3: source with the Pats that say May and Vrabel have
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: a rift.
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: May isn't Vrabel's guy.
- 1:18:29Speaker 11: They said the insider is going to be a guest
- 1:18:30Speaker 11: on the show on Friday, and Wiggy validated the source
- 1:18:32Speaker 11: is legit.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: Okay. We'll see.
- 1:18:35Speaker 9: Someone from the organization is going to come on the
- 1:18:37Speaker 9: show and tell you about all the drama between people.
- 1:18:41Speaker 10: Are they going to change his voice?
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: That's what he said.
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: Is that what he said? It was a source. He
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: said inside? Yeah.
- 1:18:49Speaker 10: But why would the source... come on?
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: Insider. An insider. Not inside the organization. No, it says
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: inside source with the Patriots. That doesn't mean it's someone
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: who works for the Patriots. That person is not showing
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: up on that program.
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: There's no chance that someone who works for the Patriots.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: Unless they have a death wish. I'm just reading the tweets. No, no, no.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: I'm not doubting you.
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: That tweet doesn't say a guy who works for the
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: Patriots is going on in the show on Friday. It
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: says an inside source.
- 1:19:12Speaker 9: We're excited to welcome a low-level assistant.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: What do you have to tell us? It's not good
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: in there, guys. I've got to go back to work.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: It's a guy.
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: Who was on the Patriots and got cut two weeks ago.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: He's on the practice squad.
- 1:19:22Speaker 8: It's hilarious.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: See, this is what happens when things don't go well.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: All this stuff.
- 1:19:27Speaker 9: That's what's so funny to me, and I enjoy it.
- 1:19:29Speaker 9: It's just three losses, and the world is over.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Bro.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Two.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry, sorry. Three games in. I've been saying three
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: games in the season.
- 1:19:36Speaker 10: You've already given them the yell on Sunday.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: Three games in the season. Two guys making their pips
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: on Wednesdays.
- 1:19:41Speaker 10: I'm the problem.
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: I mean, the last year couldn't have been better vibes.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: Everyone loves each other. We're quoting movies.
- 1:19:46Speaker 10: We're having fun.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Three games later. They hate each other. They can't play offense.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: The defense is collapsing. You know, it's just, that's how
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: it is. That's what it is.
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: So Matt, make sure you're listening on Friday and you
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: let us know what the source, who the source is
- 1:19:58Speaker 6: and what he or she says.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Probably like somebody like Dakota.
- 1:20:02Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: A lot of people are saying Volan. Poland. Poland. Poland.
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: That's not an inside source.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: No. Just to be clear.
- 1:20:12Speaker 10: He might have an inside source, but he is not
- 1:20:14Speaker 10: an inside source.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: I mean, is anyone still an inside source if you
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: come on a radio program and talk to them?
- 1:20:17Speaker 10: That's why I said, are they going to do the
- 1:20:19Speaker 10: fake voice? Yeah, like where they do it.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 1:20:22Speaker 10: It's like pixelated.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: They got them all covered up.
- 1:20:25Speaker 10: Whatever that word is. We're going to hide his identity.
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: All right, let's go to Raleigh. Justina is in Raleigh.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: What's up, Justina?
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: Hi.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 1:20:41Speaker 13: Hey, I'm back. I just wanted to make a comment.
- 1:20:48Speaker 13: I always agree with everything about what Evan said, but
- 1:20:54Speaker 13: today I finally agreed with what Paul said.
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: Good job, Paulie.
- 1:21:00Speaker 13: And when he said that everybody has the Patriots number
- 1:21:14Speaker 13: and they've coached them. Everybody's coached them for all the
- 1:21:18Speaker 13: good players and wanted to attack all the good players.
- 1:21:25Speaker 13: And then they've coached them how to stop the good
- 1:21:28Speaker 13: players from break to.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: Milton Williams.
- 1:21:34Speaker 13: Milton Williams, yes. And I find it a brand new
- 1:21:38Speaker 13: point he says, but this is what I really wanted
- 1:21:40Speaker 13: to say. I think the problem that we are having
- 1:21:45Speaker 13: this year is last year's food goals. That food goal
- 1:21:54Speaker 13: is the overshadow that we're getting from And it started
- 1:21:58Speaker 13: out with NFL giving us the worst, the hardest team
- 1:22:04Speaker 13: to play for this year. And now the coaches are
- 1:22:08Speaker 13: using the talent that they have to focus on our
- 1:22:13Speaker 13: team to try to stop them and prove that they
- 1:22:16Speaker 13: were just foos goals. But I think they just got
- 1:22:23Speaker 13: to shake it off, realize, get in their head that
- 1:22:27Speaker 13: they're going to prove them wrong and just go out
- 1:22:30Speaker 13: there and show them and not be so afraid to,
- 1:22:35Speaker 13: you know, mix things up, change it around so everybody
- 1:22:39Speaker 13: can't be so predictable. And we can go from there.
- 1:22:43Speaker 13: I still have faith in them.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: All right, Justina. Listen, I think we do have the
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: target on our back. That's what happens. That's why there's
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: a lot of history of teams that particularly lose the
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: Super Bowl that have bad seasons.
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: The next year.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: Because it's tough to keep that up, and now teams
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: are gunning for you.
- 1:23:03Speaker 10: The schedule is formulaic.
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: The NFL doesn't give you the schedule.
- 1:23:09Speaker 10: Sorry.
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: And they're actually trying. The teams that they're playing are
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: trying to beat them.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: They get paid, too.
- 1:23:16Speaker 7: But they shouldn't be doing that. It's predetermined. It's not
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: like they're saying, let's make them play all the tough teams.
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: But her larger point is, we're going to come out
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: of this.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: Next year's schedule stinks.
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: Back to the bottom.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Just telling you. All right.
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: Historically easy.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Here he is, Christian in L.A. What's up?
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: Hey, you guys.
- 1:23:36Speaker 10: Hey, you guys.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Hey, you guys.
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: Hey, you guys.
- 1:23:40Speaker 8: So I'm finally a little sick of the Drake may
- 1:23:44Speaker 8: need to get confidence talk. I'm kind of over it.
- 1:23:46Speaker 8: I mean, at the end of the day, what exactly
- 1:23:50Speaker 8: is he supposed to have confidence in? Is he supposed
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: to have confidence in a coach who I guess didn't
- 1:23:55Speaker 8: realize that his second year starting quarterback i know you're
- 1:23:59Speaker 8: going to say third but second full year starting quarterback
- 1:24:03Speaker 8: who's 22 years old probably should have kept his two
- 1:24:06Speaker 8: binkies one more year before giving him away or that
- 1:24:11Speaker 8: you know teams are gunning for us and we need
- 1:24:13Speaker 8: to change things up a little bit if he's supposed
- 1:24:15Speaker 8: to have confidence in a a play caller who seems
- 1:24:19Speaker 8: to be stuck in his ways and can't move forward
- 1:24:22Speaker 8: and innovate and do some new stuff, is he supposed
- 1:24:25Speaker 8: to have confidence in his two running backs? One who
- 1:24:27Speaker 8: has vision but can't hold on to the ball, one
- 1:24:31Speaker 8: who has speed but no vision, and they both seem
- 1:24:33Speaker 8: to be running into the back of the line in
- 1:24:35Speaker 8: an ordinary amount of time. Is he supposed to have
- 1:24:39Speaker 8: confidence in a front line who's either hurt, old, inexperienced,
- 1:24:45Speaker 8: too small, or brand new?
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Sounds like you're coddling the quarterbacks.
- 1:24:51Speaker 8: I'm defending Drake May.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: I know. I know. You've done a heel turn.
- 1:24:57Speaker 8: No, it's not a heel turn. What it is is
- 1:24:58Speaker 8: me saying this.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: It's a contrarian turn. It's even more pathetic.
- 1:25:03Speaker 8: I want you guys to tell me this. When was
- 1:25:05Speaker 8: the last complete game that Drake May played? You guys
- 1:25:08Speaker 8: are on this like it's been two games.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: He finishes them all.
- 1:25:12Speaker 10: I think he means like good for Scott to finish.
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: No interceptions, a couple of touchdowns.
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: It was the Jets game last year that you come
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: on every call and talk about.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: He hasn't done it since the Jets game of last year.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: You are correct.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:25:27Speaker 8: So with that said, it's time to like not Drake May,
- 1:25:31Speaker 8: but sort of throw the baby out with the bathwater
- 1:25:34Speaker 8: as far as the play calling goes, the design goes,
- 1:25:37Speaker 8: and just let him go out there and do what he–
- 1:25:40Speaker 8: is used to doing just go wild and play. Cause
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: it seems to me, and I'll end with this, his
- 1:25:45Speaker 8: problem may be that Josh McDaniels, who is a great
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: coordinator is trying to do what he's supposed to do.
- 1:25:51Speaker 8: Turn Drake may from a guy who can play quarterback
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: to a quarterback in the NFL. And it may be
- 1:25:58Speaker 8: just not really, you know, Drake's not ready for that.
- 1:26:00Speaker 8: He needs one more year of just being Drake before
- 1:26:03Speaker 8: Josh starts to transform him, which he.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: Has to do.
- 1:26:06Speaker 8: I'll take it off the air.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: All right. Thanks.
- 1:26:08Speaker 7: I probably would phrase it all very differently, but I
- 1:26:11Speaker 7: think that there's the situation around him also needs to
- 1:26:14Speaker 7: improve as along with his play.
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: So the one thing, everything he said, I would largely
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: agree with that. There's the problems on offense are widespread.
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: They're not just about the quarterback. The quarterback gets the
- 1:26:26Speaker 6: most responsibility for obvious reasons, but I would agree with
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: most of what he said. How do you feel like
- 1:26:31Speaker 6: the passing game would look if AJ Brown was healthy?
- 1:26:34Speaker 6: And he never got hurt.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Better. So it has nothing to do with him losing
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: his binky from last year.
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: He lost the guy who they signed in the third
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: quarter of the first game of the year. That's the issue.
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: There's no way they could have foreseen that. Like, how
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: would you know that he's going to get hurt in
- 1:26:50Speaker 6: the third quarter of the first game of the year?
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: That, to me, is the issue. They miss A.J. Brown. Now,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: I'm not telling you when A.J.
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: Brown comes back, all this is going to be magically repaired,
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: because now I think you're dealing with some emotional and
- 1:27:04Speaker 6: sort of mental you.
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: Know not to mention injuries beyond no but i'm.
- 1:27:08Speaker 6: Saying like it's not just as easy as oh i
- 1:27:10Speaker 6: have my slant guy back and i'm just gonna you
- 1:27:12Speaker 6: know pick up where i left off in the summer
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: yeah now he's got to kind of get back on
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: track too mentally that's.
- 1:27:19Speaker 7: Why i like with the dig stuff like alex and
- 1:27:21Speaker 7: i were talking about this yesterday and it's like Yeah.
- 1:27:24Speaker 7: In hindsight, it's easy to say they could use Stefan
- 1:27:26Speaker 7: Diggs right now, but the plan was for AJ Brown
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: to replace the volume that Stefan Diggs left behind. So
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: like it's, it's kind of not apples to apples to
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: compare it. If I don't think it would be like
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: worlds better, but like it obviously would have been better
- 1:27:42Speaker 7: if AJ Brown played in the last two games. I mean,
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: he's AJ Brown. He's a great player.
- 1:27:46Speaker 6: There's an argument to be made that the struggles and
- 1:27:48Speaker 6: the bad habits and the you know, the turnovers would
- 1:27:51Speaker 6: not have happened had A.J.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: Brown not gone. You can make that argument. I don't know.
- 1:27:56Speaker 6: Like, it's hard to just say definitively because it didn't happen.
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: So we have nothing to know. But, like, I think
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: I said it in the postgame show. Like, anybody that
- 1:28:03Speaker 6: would sit there and say, right now, with A.J. Brown out,
- 1:28:07Speaker 6: they wouldn't rather have Diggs back is lying. I would
- 1:28:11Speaker 6: absolutely wish that Diggs was part of this offense right now.
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:14Speaker 6: But I didn't know that Brown was going to get hurt.
- 1:28:16Speaker 6: The other part of this, earmuffs for you.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:19Speaker 6: The offense would look exactly the same as it looks
- 1:28:21Speaker 6: right now if Booty was here. They still wouldn't have
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: a guy that he can go to for the volume
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: because A.J.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Brown is hurt.
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: I don't mean that disrespectfully. Again, I would rather have
- 1:28:36Speaker 6: Booty here right now than what you're getting from Dobbs.
- 1:28:40Speaker 6: but I don't think your offense would look markedly better.
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: No.
- 1:28:43Speaker 9: Evan's comment too about the pace thing, which I noticed
- 1:28:45Speaker 9: too in camp. And I know, you know, I remember
- 1:28:47Speaker 9: Andrew Callahan writing a lot about, it seems like that's
- 1:28:49Speaker 9: what the twist is going to be this year. I
- 1:28:51Speaker 9: just wonder how much injuries and performance have taken them
- 1:28:54Speaker 9: out of what their plans were to kind of do.
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: How about the protection? Yeah. Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 1:29:02Speaker 7: I mean, they're going faster in between plays than they
- 1:29:04Speaker 7: were last year. They're not spending as much time in
- 1:29:07Speaker 7: the huddle and all that kind of stuff. But I
- 1:29:10Speaker 7: still don't feel like they're playing with a real tempo.
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: And I think that it's hard to do that when
- 1:29:14Speaker 7: you have negative plays. Like when you have sacks, when
- 1:29:17Speaker 7: you have run stuffs and things like that, well, now
- 1:29:19Speaker 7: you're not necessarily.
- 1:29:21Speaker 10: Just, all right, we're on the ball, we're on the ball,
- 1:29:22Speaker 10: we're on the ball. It's hard to do that, but.
- 1:29:25Speaker 7: It definitely felt like that they wanted to do that more,
- 1:29:28Speaker 7: and I think the main reason was to try to
- 1:29:31Speaker 7: kind of get defenses in the same groupings and stuff
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: like that and play those games, and they just haven't
- 1:29:36Speaker 7: been able to do it at a high enough level.
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: Michael in Denver, of course, he says, prior emailers corresponded
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: about his role as a police officer brought a true
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: tragedy to my mind.
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: I have not received the Amber Alert on my phone,
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: even at midnight.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: Nor have I heard any pleas for his safe return
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: by Mike Vrabel or Josh McDaniels. But please, tell me
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: Reggie Gilliam is alive and well. I'm dubious if he
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: even exists at this point. All kidding aside, can someone
- 1:30:06Speaker 4: please ask Mike Vrabel why our prize-free agent fullback has
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: not been seen on the field?
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: In fact, Tanner Arkin got a run at fullback on Sunday.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: It's been another one of those surprises to me.
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: Eight snaps, I think, he got the other day.
- 1:30:20Speaker 9: To me, it's just the lack of impact juice. Like,
- 1:30:23Speaker 9: it's kind of running into a wall. And they're not
- 1:30:25Speaker 9: blowing people out and getting people out of the way.
- 1:30:27Speaker 9: It's kind of fighting guys to a stalemate. I thought
- 1:30:30Speaker 9: he was a bigger dude. I mean, you don't know
- 1:30:32Speaker 9: until you get an up-close look. He looks more like
- 1:30:35Speaker 9: a smaller fullback, H-back kind of guy. I honestly wonder
- 1:30:38Speaker 9: if the route with him is to get him more
- 1:30:40Speaker 9: involved in the passing game. As silly as that sounds,
- 1:30:43Speaker 9: it's not going to be dynamic, but is he somebody
- 1:30:45Speaker 9: who can get lost in the mix and maybe contribute
- 1:30:47Speaker 9: that way? Because I haven't really seen any, and as
- 1:30:50Speaker 9: a fullback guy too, not as much as Andy, but
- 1:30:53Speaker 9: love the fullbacks.
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: Just haven't seen an impact, certainly, on the run game.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: I mean, we talked about... No, he hasn't seen an impact.
- 1:30:58Speaker 7: I think that he's... You know, your point about him
- 1:31:00Speaker 7: being more of an athletic, like, smaller fullback is a
- 1:31:04Speaker 7: good one. I don't think that he is James Devlin
- 1:31:07Speaker 7: through the B-gap up to the linebacker and we're just
- 1:31:09Speaker 7: going to run, you know, lead right behind him and
- 1:31:12Speaker 7: start to smash guys. Like, I don't think that that's really... Uh,
- 1:31:15Speaker 7: his skillset in Buffalo, they, they used him a lot
- 1:31:17Speaker 7: more on the move. They use them a lot more
- 1:31:19Speaker 7: in zone schemes where he's like wrapping and going in
- 1:31:22Speaker 7: motion and things like that. Uh, I, I think that
- 1:31:24Speaker 7: those are some of the things that maybe we'll see
- 1:31:26Speaker 7: more of. Hopefully, uh, he's also been hurt. Like I don't,
- 1:31:29Speaker 7: you know, like even in the summer they were managing
- 1:31:32Speaker 7: him injury wise. And, uh, just one last point. I, uh,
- 1:31:35Speaker 7: He mentioned to us in the summer that when the
- 1:31:39Speaker 7: whole starters not playing during the preseason thing was going on,
- 1:31:42Speaker 7: that he felt like for his position that he wanted
- 1:31:45Speaker 7: to play in the preseason because he starts to get
- 1:31:48Speaker 7: a feel for like, hey, it's live and like that's
- 1:31:50Speaker 7: different than practice when a linebacker is coming downhill at
- 1:31:54Speaker 7: him in a game versus in practice. but it's also
- 1:31:57Speaker 7: to get a field for how the running backs are
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: going to cut off of him so that he knows
- 1:32:00Speaker 7: how to like the angles and the leverage to take
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: on the blocks.
- 1:32:04Speaker 10: So we're only a couple of weeks into the season.
- 1:32:06Speaker 7: I just wonder if maybe he's going to have a
- 1:32:08Speaker 7: little bit of a slower ramp up because he's not
- 1:32:11Speaker 7: like in rhythm yet.
- 1:32:12Speaker 10: I don't know how else.
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: To put it.
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: I like your point about the health because that is
- 1:32:15Speaker 6: something that could be part of this. Do you guys
- 1:32:17Speaker 6: have numbers on his usage, you know, snap percentage in Buffalo?
- 1:32:22Speaker 10: He was a part of their offense, but it wasn't like,
- 1:32:25Speaker 10: you know.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: Was it much bigger than this?
- 1:32:27Speaker 10: Because I don't really recall him being a big part
- 1:32:28Speaker 10: of Buffalo's offense.
- 1:32:29Speaker 7: I would say slightly, but not like how they used
- 1:32:33Speaker 7: to use Devlin, for example, where he's on the field
- 1:32:36Speaker 7: a lot.
- 1:32:37Speaker 4: Let's go to North Carolina.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Todd's there. What's up, Todd? Todd.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: Todd.
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: Todd. All right. How about we'll stay in North Carolina. Sabah,
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: what's up?
- 1:32:52Speaker 13: Hey there, gentlemen.
- 1:32:54Speaker 17: I tell you, I told you guys at the beginning
- 1:32:57Speaker 17: they should have never let Diggs and Booty go. And
- 1:32:59Speaker 17: I know you critique, well, Booty only had 30 catches.
- 1:33:02Speaker 17: That's like baseball guys who never get on base, but
- 1:33:04Speaker 17: when they do hit the ball, it's a home run.
- 1:33:06Speaker 17: And that's what Booty gave them. I don't like the
- 1:33:09Speaker 17: fact that the team act like just because the girl's prettier,
- 1:33:12Speaker 17: you make better wives.
- 1:33:14Speaker 13: He had a great relationship with Diggs and Booty, and
- 1:33:17Speaker 13: he's young.
- 1:33:18Speaker 17: It's like you took a toddler that went across the
- 1:33:21Speaker 17: yard really quick to zoom to a marathon.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: He is not.
- 1:33:24Speaker 17: Ready to be Tom Brady right now. He's not ready
- 1:33:26Speaker 17: to over-process everything. He's playing tight and scared, and Brable's
- 1:33:32Speaker 17: not doing any good, but all he talks about is, I.
- 1:33:34Speaker 6: Don't want him to make mistakes.
- 1:33:35Speaker 13: Don't make mistakes.
- 1:33:36Speaker 17: How's a race car driver going to do NASCAR if
- 1:33:39Speaker 17: all he's worried about is not having an accident?
- 1:33:41Speaker 13: He's not going to pass anybody.
- 1:33:42Speaker 17: He's not going to do anything aggressive. What they should
- 1:33:45Speaker 17: say is, you can be Matt Stanford and lead the
- 1:33:48Speaker 17: league all time and pick.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: Sixes and we'll still love you.
- 1:33:51Speaker 17: No, he's got to be, don't do this, don't do that.
- 1:33:54Speaker 17: And the receivers, he does not trust any of them.
- 1:33:56Speaker 17: None of them. Henry's good when he's the third or
- 1:33:58Speaker 17: fourth option. There's nobody to trust. Y'all got rid of
- 1:34:01Speaker 17: his love and you've made him impotent. You've castrated the quarterback.
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: Well, you know, Sabah, I hear what you're saying about
- 1:34:08Speaker 4: Booty and Diggs, but they did get A.J. Brown, and
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: like Paul said, you didn't expect A.J. Brown to get
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: hurt in the first game, and you've got to believe
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: if he was out there, he'd be making the other
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: receivers better.
- 1:34:22Speaker 17: Listen, the thing we learned in surgical residency is this,
- 1:34:25Speaker 17: the number one rule, the evil of good is perfect.
- 1:34:29Speaker 13: You had good, and you wanted to get perfect.
- 1:34:33Speaker 17: That's on your franchise.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: All right. That sounds like a drop-the-mic statement.
- 1:34:38Speaker 10: That's on your franchise.
- 1:34:41Speaker 6: It's a very legitimate second guess. And I understand completely
- 1:34:47Speaker 6: why people are fixated on that. It wasn't broken last year.
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: It is broken this year. What are the differences? They
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: took two guys away and put two guys in. And
- 1:34:59Speaker 6: it's broken now. I don't think it's that simple, but
- 1:35:02Speaker 6: I understand why people, you know, and they're not alone.
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: You know, Christian and Saba, they're not alone. A lot
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: of people talk about, you know, they should have just
- 1:35:13Speaker 6: kept Diggs. They should have just kept Diggs. I think
- 1:35:15Speaker 6: it's not that simple to do because, especially if you've
- 1:35:20Speaker 6: got A.J.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: Brown.
- 1:35:22Speaker 6: So now, you sort of go through that whole thing
- 1:35:24Speaker 6: with his contract.
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:35:27Speaker 6: They released him. So now he makes... less than half
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: of what he made last year, right, with Washington. So
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: would he have been okay re-signing with the same team
- 1:35:35Speaker 6: for half the money to be the number two guy?
- 1:35:39Speaker 6: I heard Michael Holley talking about this last night on
- 1:35:41Speaker 6: one of my shows after the Red Sox and just
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: clicking around and, you know, that they were on.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: And, you know, it was like the whole Diggs thing.
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: I get it.
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: Diggs would look a lot better in this offense right
- 1:35:51Speaker 6: now than any of these wide receivers look right now.
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: I'm pretty confident of that. But I think it's also...
- 1:35:59Speaker 6: You're saying that with the 20-20 hindsight of knowing that A.J.
- 1:36:02Speaker 6: Brown was going to get hurt. I don't think the
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: offense would look the way it does right now. It
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: didn't look that way in the first half, even though
- 1:36:09Speaker 6: they didn't score. And I said they only had seven points,
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: but they didn't look incompetent in the first half when A.J.
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: Brown was playing.
- 1:36:17Speaker 6: And it certainly looked like he was starting to get, okay,
- 1:36:21Speaker 6: Brown's going to be, he had four catches in two
- 1:36:23Speaker 6: and a half quarters, less than.
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: Two and a half quarters.
- 1:36:25Speaker 10: And a pass interference.
- 1:36:26Speaker 6: So it was starting to look like, okay, this is
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: going to be the volume guy.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:36:32Speaker 6: We'll never know. I can't definitively tell you that was
- 1:36:34Speaker 6: going to be the case. He'd be catching eight balls
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: a game. I can't tell you that didn't happen.
- 1:36:38Speaker 10: I would just say, like, did it work?
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: But I think it would have.
- 1:36:40Speaker 10: Was the offense working in the playoffs?
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: No.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: No.
- 1:36:43Speaker 10: Like realistically, like did they play good offense in the playoffs?
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:36:47Speaker 10: And did they play good offense in the Super Bowl?
- 1:36:48Speaker 7: So the offense last year worked against lesser competition in
- 1:36:53Speaker 7: the regular season. And I think what the coaching staff
- 1:36:56Speaker 7: in the front office looked at it and said, we
- 1:36:58Speaker 7: need to take a next step. Like we need to
- 1:37:00Speaker 7: be even better than that because when we got to
- 1:37:02Speaker 7: the good.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Teams, we need to be good defense.
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:37:05Speaker 10: We did it. We didn't play well.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:37:07Speaker 7: And so, yes, you know, maybe again, some of the
- 1:37:11Speaker 7: lesser teams that are on their schedule, the offense with
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: digs and booty and is running it back would have
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: looked exactly the same as it did during the regular
- 1:37:19Speaker 7: season last year. but they had their eyes set on
- 1:37:22Speaker 7: something higher. They wanted to be able to not, frankly,
- 1:37:26Speaker 7: they were just not good in the playoffs offensively. And
- 1:37:30Speaker 7: Drake wasn't good.
- 1:37:31Speaker 10: He looked like this.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: With digs.
- 1:37:33Speaker 7: With digs, with booty, with all the same pieces that
- 1:37:37Speaker 7: everybody wants back now.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: Just real quick, Paul. Usage, Gilliam, about the same as
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: last year.
- 1:37:43Speaker 9: About 13 snaps a game, 14 snaps a game.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: He played about 21% of the snaps. And what has
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: he done for the Patriots?
- 1:37:50Speaker 9: 22% of the snaps, 41 snaps in three games.
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: So, you know, it's 12, 13 snaps. So maybe our
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: expectations were a little bit too high.
- 1:37:57Speaker 6: So they did, there was a lot of talk about
- 1:38:00Speaker 6: Buffalo didn't use him a lot. And the Patriots, and
- 1:38:04Speaker 6: I remember listening to Reggie himself during training camp one
- 1:38:07Speaker 6: day talking about, He likes some of the versatility that McDaniels'
- 1:38:12Speaker 6: system gave him. Like, you know, he's out wide sometimes.
- 1:38:15Speaker 6: As Evan was talking about, maybe they're hunting a matchup
- 1:38:18Speaker 6: with a linebacker. Maybe he gets lost in space or
- 1:38:21Speaker 6: something like that because he's not not you a lost
- 1:38:23Speaker 6: in space.
- 1:38:24Speaker 7: They also just like to invert the formation a lot.
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: So they'll put like the running back and the full
- 1:38:32Speaker 7: back out wide and they put the pass catchers in
- 1:38:34Speaker 7: the middle of the formation. So now the pass catchers,
- 1:38:37Speaker 7: the receivers and the tight ends. They're getting linebackers and
- 1:38:40Speaker 7: safeties when the running backs and the fullbacks are getting corners.
- 1:38:43Speaker 10: So you can get Darrell.
- 1:38:44Speaker 6: Revis lined up on Gilliam.
- 1:38:45Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: No, seriously.
- 1:38:46Speaker 6: That's what they're hoping that they don't.
- 1:38:49Speaker 10: And it also is a coverage indicator.
- 1:38:51Speaker 7: Like if they get followed out by a linebacker, it's
- 1:38:53Speaker 7: usually man-to-man coverage. If the corner stays out there, then
- 1:38:56Speaker 7: that means it's probably zone. And those are the things
- 1:38:59Speaker 7: that they would do with Brady where they would come
- 1:39:01Speaker 7: out in 21 personnel. Sometimes they would start in under
- 1:39:05Speaker 7: this under center. He would see that they were in
- 1:39:07Speaker 7: base defense and all of a sudden we, that he
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: would move everybody out and they go to empty and
- 1:39:13Speaker 7: they'd run Haas juke into base defense.
- 1:39:15Speaker 10: And yeah, Win the Super Bowl.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: Always gets back to Hostew. Always goes back to Hostew.
- 1:39:18Speaker 7: The play that doesn't work now after it literally won
- 1:39:21Speaker 7: them a Super Bowl.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: Matt in Wichita wants to talk about the negativity in
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: the Boston media.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: What?
- 1:39:27Speaker 10: What else is there?
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: I think you guys are joking about a problem that's
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: unique to New England sports.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: It's our fault. As usual.
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: I grew up in New England, and during the Brady era,
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: it felt like a lot of the fans in sports
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: talk shows, Paul shows, would say things like, The Patriots
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: don't have a chance to win the Super Bowl this
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: year because the third string left tackle is a problem.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: Moving out here.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: To Chiefs Nation, it was a culture shock when it
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: comes to fans and sports media. Even before the Mahomes run,
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: everyone out here had the mentality of this is our year. Honestly,
- 1:39:57Speaker 4: it used to piss me off a bit that there
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: was so much unfounded optimism at the time. Even now
- 1:40:03Speaker 4: that there has been winning out here, there's still not
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: nearly the same panic. I can't comprehend how everyone last
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: year was saying Vrabel, McDaniels, and May were all top
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: five in their role, and now everyone acts like coming
- 1:40:15Speaker 4: out of this hole is impossible. There are problems for sure,
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: but let's not act like none of these guys are
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: qualified at their position and are just going through a
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: slump for a few games. If there's another bad game
- 1:40:26Speaker 4: or two, fans are going to start calling for people's heads,
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: and I think it's ridiculous that you aren't going to
- 1:40:31Speaker 4: replace any of them with someone who is available and better.
- 1:40:35Speaker 10: What does he say? I get the general premise to
- 1:40:38Speaker 10: the email.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: Root for the home team. That's what he's saying. Oh,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: he's saying people will say all of that.
- 1:40:43Speaker 7: This is the reigning coach of the year and the
- 1:40:44Speaker 7: reigning assistant coach of the year and a quarterback that
- 1:40:47Speaker 7: had an MVP caliber season a year ago. And we
- 1:40:49Speaker 7: are three games in, and people are asking for them
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: to be fired.
- 1:40:52Speaker 6: I haven't heard one single person ask for them to
- 1:40:55Speaker 6: be fired.
- 1:40:55Speaker 7: Well, I mean, maybe not in that many words, Paul.
- 1:40:58Speaker 10: I'm not saying you.
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: I'm more combating.
- 1:41:01Speaker 6: I don't think that that is the prevailing mindset in
- 1:41:05Speaker 6: New England right now. The prevailing mindset is what is
- 1:41:08Speaker 6: wrong with Drake May and how can we fix it?
- 1:41:11Speaker 6: That's the prevailing mindset.
- 1:41:12Speaker 7: And I think people are starting to question, not us,
- 1:41:14Speaker 7: but people that the emailer is talking about.
- 1:41:17Speaker 10: I'll bring up Orlovsky again.
- 1:41:19Speaker 7: He went on the air the other day and said,
- 1:41:21Speaker 7: I don't doubt Drake May's ability, but I am starting
- 1:41:24Speaker 7: to worry about Vrabel and May together.
- 1:41:26Speaker 10: That's what people are saying.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: I'll talk about that often.
- 1:41:28Speaker 7: And that's not calling for anybody's job, but that's what
- 1:41:32Speaker 7: he's talking about.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: It's funny, the former quarterback, it's always the quarterback. What
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: would be the connection?
- 1:41:38Speaker 7: I only know that one because I don't really. What
- 1:41:41Speaker 7: Paul's shows say, I kind of tune out.
- 1:41:43Speaker 9: I think, too, though, you've got to remember that this
- 1:41:45Speaker 9: is a unique atmosphere and that they won six Super
- 1:41:47Speaker 9: Bowls and we're in it every year. And Paul always
- 1:41:49Speaker 9: makes the joke of our arguments then were like, Do
- 1:41:52Speaker 9: they have the right third tackle?
- 1:41:54Speaker 6: It was kind of a tongue-in-cheek thing.
- 1:41:57Speaker 9: It's different here also. And I get what he's saying.
- 1:42:02Speaker 6: He loved it. He used to love to torture me
- 1:42:05Speaker 6: and Andy.
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: But I think part of this, too, is that those
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: expectations were like, oh, we're back.
- 1:42:09Speaker 9: We're good now. We're going to be good every year.
- 1:42:11Speaker 9: And all of a sudden, and I'm feeling this, too,
- 1:42:14Speaker 9: it's like, oh, no. We're back at, like, this looks
- 1:42:17Speaker 9: like the four-win teams. Like, I thought this was over.
- 1:42:19Speaker 9: We're not dealing with this again, are we? Did we
- 1:42:20Speaker 9: not find the quarterback?
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: Like, that's the panic.
- 1:42:22Speaker 6: The offensive coordinator right now is taking some heat.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: That I agree with, Evan.
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: There's always play callers that think that the play call
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: is the issue. I haven't heard one person say Mike Vrabel,
- 1:42:33Speaker 6: his job should be on the line. And I haven't
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: heard one person suggest that Drake May should sit other
- 1:42:38Speaker 6: than Christian in L.A.
- 1:42:40Speaker 7: Uh, there might be one radio personality that I think
- 1:42:43Speaker 7: Boomer Sison said something along the lines of Drake may
- 1:42:46Speaker 7: should sit. I, you know, I keep receipts, but like, I, like,
- 1:42:49Speaker 7: I don't, I agree with you on the whole. I
- 1:42:52Speaker 7: don't hear people actually calling for people's jobs, but the
- 1:42:55Speaker 7: questioning is obviously rampant.
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: I mean, but this should be, it's seven games. Yeah.
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: Like what happened?
- 1:43:01Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: And why can't anybody fix it? Like there should be questions.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: Martin in Kansas.
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: I see the echoes of last season. At the time,
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: the Patriots were 1-2 after the horrific game against the Steelers.
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: After the slow start, the Patriots bounced back and went
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: on a winning streak.
- 1:43:17Speaker 10: It wasn't the same.
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: I know. I understand the.
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: Schedule is tougher this season, and it has almost a
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: seesaw effect between good teams and bad teams. However, I'm
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: optimistic about the game versus Buffalo. Josh Allen has had
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: a couple of ugly wins this season, and I bet
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: his luck is about to run out.
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: Says Alex Barth. That's patently untrue. I hope we have seen...
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: He had one ugly win. I hope we have seen
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: the worst of May this season. I hope.
- 1:43:42Speaker 10: I mean, it just.
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: He was virtually flawless in the first two weeks.
- 1:43:45Speaker 7: The first three games of last year were not what
- 1:43:49Speaker 7: we're watching now. They didn't lose the game to the
- 1:43:52Speaker 7: Steelers 35-6 in a non-competitive game. They lost the game
- 1:43:56Speaker 7: because they turned the ball over a bunch.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: Just stop turning the ball over.
- 1:43:58Speaker 10: But they played better than Pittsburgh for most of the day.
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: I agree with that.
- 1:44:02Speaker 6: And I would also say that It's a much different mindset.
- 1:44:06Speaker 6: Last year at this time, they didn't know what they
- 1:44:09Speaker 6: were yet. They were a new team with a new coach,
- 1:44:13Speaker 6: and they were trying to learn how to win. And
- 1:44:16Speaker 6: when they were 1-2, it wasn't like, oh, my God,
- 1:44:18Speaker 6: we're 1-2.
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: What are we going to do? We thought we were
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: going to the Super Bowl.
- 1:44:22Speaker 6: This year, there are expectations, and they're off to a
- 1:44:25Speaker 6: disappointing start. That's way different mentally. This team hasn't accomplished
- 1:44:30Speaker 6: anything yet. Last year, it didn't matter because they were
- 1:44:33Speaker 6: trying to get to something. This year, they feel like
- 1:44:36Speaker 6: they're underachieving. Like, what's going wrong? And I agree wholeheartedly
- 1:44:41Speaker 6: with Evan's point. The second loss, and I remember, Fred,
- 1:44:44Speaker 6: you were adamant about this. I feel better about this loss.
- 1:44:49Speaker 6: I feel better about this team after this loss because
- 1:44:51Speaker 6: it was only because of our sloppy mistakes that we
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: lost this game.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: It's sort of like the Denver game with Brady. That's
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: quoting you basically directly. Remember the game?
- 1:44:58Speaker 16: Yes.
- 1:44:59Speaker 6: The four interceptions in the fourth quarter.
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: In Denver. Right.
- 1:45:03Speaker 6: Denver didn't do anything. Patriots lost the game, just like
- 1:45:06Speaker 6: Pittsburgh didn't do anything to win the game.
- 1:45:08Speaker 7: Yeah, I would say that week one was maybe a
- 1:45:11Speaker 7: little bit more like the first three games last year,
- 1:45:13Speaker 7: where if you don't turn the ball over three times
- 1:45:14Speaker 7: in the fourth quarter in Seattle, you probably win that game.
- 1:45:18Speaker 7: They didn't lose any games like they lost on Sunday
- 1:45:20Speaker 7: to Jacksonville.
- 1:45:21Speaker 6: So it's less to me about the schedule as it
- 1:45:24Speaker 6: is about the mindset and the expectations. I think it's
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: going to be much more difficult if they lose this
- 1:45:29Speaker 6: week and it's 1-3, it's going to be much more
- 1:45:31Speaker 6: difficult to turn that around than it was last year.
- 1:45:34Speaker 4: Ben, in California, all this Diggs talk, and I think
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: we're missing a crucial element. Diggs' grit, hype, and sideline
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: leadership brought a meanness and instilled a cutthroat belief into everyone.
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: I see very little fight in the Patriots. No pride,
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: no mojo, whatever you want to call it. There's a
- 1:45:51Speaker 4: laundry list of issues, but I'd start there. Is there
- 1:45:54Speaker 4: anyone on the roster who can fill that role? I'd
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: like to see Campbell show the nastiness we heard about
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: after the draft I'll take an unnecessary roughness penalty early
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: if it sets the tone for the team.
- 1:46:05Speaker 7: I would say if you're going to second guess the departures,
- 1:46:09Speaker 7: I would say that was it. They assigned a lot
- 1:46:11Speaker 7: of guys last year who fit a culture. And winning
- 1:46:16Speaker 7: is obviously the biggest part of it. But the emailer
- 1:46:19Speaker 7: is right. Diggs gave you that. I will never forget
- 1:46:24Speaker 7: when they went to Buffalo last year. And he started
- 1:46:27Speaker 7: dancing in the middle of the field in pregame warm-ups.
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: He was on a mission that night.
- 1:46:31Speaker 7: And he just had a swagger about him that I
- 1:46:34Speaker 7: really have never seen. And then he just absolutely balled
- 1:46:37Speaker 7: out in the game. And that was infectious. He literally
- 1:46:41Speaker 7: went to the 50-yard line and was dancing on their logo.
- 1:46:45Speaker 7: And was like, you know, rubbing it in their face, like,
- 1:46:47Speaker 7: guess who's home? Like, you know, and then he went
- 1:46:50Speaker 7: out there and had like one of the best games
- 1:46:51Speaker 7: I've seen a receiver have like all year last year.
- 1:46:54Speaker 9: That's maybe to me might be the sweet spot for
- 1:46:56Speaker 9: Drake May of not being the rah-rah energy guy. I
- 1:46:59Speaker 9: don't know if he's ever going to be that, but
- 1:47:00Speaker 9: I thought Diggs is rah-rah energy, which I almost miss
- 1:47:03Speaker 9: more than his on the field production, especially towards the end.
- 1:47:06Speaker 9: It allowed Drake to just sit back, be calm. This
- 1:47:09Speaker 9: is our emotional leader. He's going to be the one
- 1:47:11Speaker 9: who's going to pick guys up. Drake can focus on
- 1:47:13Speaker 9: what he... I don't know where he's going to fit
- 1:47:16Speaker 9: into all this. And I don't think A.J. Brown's really
- 1:47:18Speaker 9: that kind of... rah-rah fire.
- 1:47:20Speaker 2: I mean, he's a great player, but I think he's
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: more in the reserves. The emailer brought up Will Campbell.
- 1:47:26Speaker 4: And usually your tackle isn't the one rah-rah on the sideline,
- 1:47:29Speaker 4: but what do you think about that?
- 1:47:30Speaker 10: I think Will Campbell's worrying about Will Campbell right now.
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: But I think he should be a future captain. But
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: a tackle can't do that. I agree with you.
- 1:47:38Speaker 7: But I think that he has that that kind of
- 1:47:41Speaker 7: mindset eventually, but I just think right now he's just
- 1:47:43Speaker 7: trying to make sure that he's good.
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: What about just within the line?
- 1:47:46Speaker 6: He could be the captain of the line, but I
- 1:47:48Speaker 6: don't think he's going to be a rah-rah guy getting
- 1:47:50Speaker 6: guys hyped up on the sidelines.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: We'll see what happens with Morgan Moses.
- 1:47:53Speaker 9: I mean, Morgan Moses is that grandpa kind of figure
- 1:47:56Speaker 9: to that room right now, but eventually when he moves on,
- 1:47:59Speaker 9: I would love to think of Will Campbell as being
- 1:48:01Speaker 9: that kind of vocal.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: I think he's got it in him.
- 1:48:04Speaker 10: Tone setter.
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: To be that kind of guy. Travis in West Virginia.
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: Todd in North Carolina has been absent two days in
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: a row when you called on him.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: I know. He should be banned from calling for 60 days.
- 1:48:14Speaker 10: Agreed.
- 1:48:16Speaker 16: Banned.
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: I know Travis keeps receipts on that kind of stuff.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Another day. All right. We'll have to mention that one.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 1:48:24Speaker 4: Tucker writes in, I was 100% on board with A.J.
- 1:48:27Speaker 4: Brown being in the honeymoon phase for at least the
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: first year. However, I wouldn't be surprised if that ends
- 1:48:32Speaker 4: prematurely if Drake May continues to play terribly and we're
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: like 2-6. We could have traded a first-round pick for
- 1:48:38Speaker 4: a guy that plays like eight games this year and
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: wants to leave. I realize that's a worst-case scenario, not likely,
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: but it's hard not to think about that after the
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: last couple games.
- 1:48:48Speaker 9: I just wish some of these fans could have had
- 1:48:50Speaker 9: the moment that I had this summer when Dobbs started
- 1:48:52Speaker 9: to come on and we started to feel like the
- 1:48:53Speaker 9: slant to A.J. Brown was uncoverable and we all felt
- 1:48:56Speaker 9: really good about this group and you weren't lamenting. I mean,
- 1:49:00Speaker 9: I was kind of like, Booty was an afterthought to me,
- 1:49:02Speaker 9: even though he was still on the team. He wasn't
- 1:49:04Speaker 9: really showing up in any of these practices. Instead, it
- 1:49:07Speaker 9: was Dobbs and Brown, and I was excited about those guys,
- 1:49:10Speaker 9: and now it's three games.
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: It's gone backwards.
- 1:49:13Speaker 6: I'll tell you who saw a little of this, and
- 1:49:16Speaker 6: I guess I'll give another apology to Fred.
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: Fred, you talked a lot about things.
- 1:49:23Speaker 6: during training camp offensively in the passing game that you
- 1:49:26Speaker 6: didn't really love.
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: And it was more about the quarterback.
- 1:49:28Speaker 10: Yeah, it was.
- 1:49:29Speaker 6: You talked about, I think you said, does he look
- 1:49:31Speaker 6: like a top five quarterback or something like that?
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: I thought about that yesterday. No, I said I'd like
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: to see the ball get out of his hands quicker.
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: And I gave you a hard time about it.
- 1:49:39Speaker 6: And I know Evan did because Evan gets really defensive
- 1:49:42Speaker 6: when we're talking about his boy.
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: As I should. You know, maybe you saw some of
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: these things coming.
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: It wasn't until that one Sunday, I think it was,
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: where they had that best practice that I saw what
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: should be.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: In my mind. But I.
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: I said– I just thought his decision-making wasn't fast enough
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: during practice.
- 1:50:03Speaker 10: It was slow.
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: I remember.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: I mean, I missed that Friday practice, which I guess
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: you guys said was his best. But I remember I
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: always bring it up.
- 1:50:08Speaker 10: The infamous Friday practice.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: I'll never get over it.
- 1:50:10Speaker 10: He's so mad at himself.
- 1:50:11Speaker 6: For eight years, he missed one practice, and he's still
- 1:50:13Speaker 6: killing himself over it.
- 1:50:14Speaker 10: He still talks about it.
- 1:50:15Speaker 9: But it stands out because I was like, oh, it
- 1:50:17Speaker 9: sounds like he finally had a day. You know, like– granted,
- 1:50:20Speaker 9: that was like, what, day three of camp?
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't even think they were in pads yet.
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: But like– It's like OTAs.
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: But there were a couple practices that.
- 1:50:28Speaker 9: Stood out that were kind of like, oh, right, okay,
- 1:50:31Speaker 9: because he wasn't picking up where he left off and
- 1:50:34Speaker 9: just shredding the defense and dropping deep balls.
- 1:50:36Speaker 10: It was sporadic.
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: And I don't want to say that Fred made it
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: out to be like what we're seeing now.
- 1:50:40Speaker 10: Oh, no.
- 1:50:41Speaker 6: But I do think the way you just explained it,
- 1:50:44Speaker 6: the ball doesn't come out quick enough at times. I'd
- 1:50:47Speaker 6: like to see him process a little faster or whatever.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: And it's not like, oh, one, two, three, out. It's
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: more in relation to the route.
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: Like, the route seems to be already run and then
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: the ball's out instead of throwing him open.
- 1:51:00Speaker 10: Not enough anticipation.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:51:03Speaker 13: Yeah, I.
- 1:51:05Speaker 7: I was defensive because I will always be defensive of Drake,
- 1:51:07Speaker 7: but I also thought it was just kind of... He
- 1:51:10Speaker 7: had two new receivers and they were kind of getting acclimated.
- 1:51:13Speaker 7: And you want to throw with anticipation with a guy
- 1:51:15Speaker 7: you've never thrown to.
- 1:51:17Speaker 10: That's a tough ask.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: But a quarterback shouldn't be adjusting to the receiver. They
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: should be throwing the ball when and where it's supposed
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: to be.
- 1:51:24Speaker 2: And the receiver.
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: As Anibal has said earlier, it's the receiver's job to
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: do the rest.
- 1:51:28Speaker 10: I just wish that.
- 1:51:29Speaker 7: I had some small-c concerns about Dobbs early on, and
- 1:51:32Speaker 7: I feel like in training camp, he started mossing guys
- 1:51:35Speaker 7: a lot. He was just throwing balls up to them,
- 1:51:38Speaker 7: and Romeo Dobbs was catching them, and it kind of
- 1:51:41Speaker 7: made it look like they were getting a rapport, and
- 1:51:44Speaker 7: I wonder how much of that was just like, YOLO,
- 1:51:46Speaker 7: it's practice, and we're just throwing... things up like how
- 1:51:49Speaker 7: much would you really think back on it was Dobbs
- 1:51:53Speaker 7: like was he hitting Dobbs like in rhythm like Paul's
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: thing like Patriot plays so.
- 1:51:57Speaker 6: I do think there was a period and I agree
- 1:51:59Speaker 6: with you the most noteworthy plays for Dobbs were what
- 1:52:02Speaker 6: Evan said and as you know those don't really impress
- 1:52:06Speaker 6: me all that much because I don't think that that's
- 1:52:08Speaker 6: a sustainable reliable form of offense and But I did
- 1:52:12Speaker 6: think there was like a 12-yard out that was like
- 1:52:14Speaker 6: pitch and catch over the last half of camp with
- 1:52:17Speaker 6: him and Dobbs that I have not seen a single time.
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: Yeah, no.
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: In three games.
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: I think Nate Tice had to not to keep bringing
- 1:52:25Speaker 7: him up, but I think he had the stat that
- 1:52:27Speaker 7: he's only running out like 6% of the time, and
- 1:52:29Speaker 7: he was running out 16% of the time in Green Bay. So, like,
- 1:52:33Speaker 7: that must be, like, one of his favorite routes, you know,
- 1:52:36Speaker 7: and they don't necessarily feature that right now. He's running
- 1:52:38Speaker 7: a lot of, like, comebacks or curls and things like that.
- 1:52:41Speaker 7: He got an OPI for one in the game.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: And if you run the route right and the ball
- 1:52:46Speaker 4: is accurate, it's pretty hard to defend that, you know?
- 1:52:50Speaker 10: Yeah, especially if he's off.
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: Think about those Brady ones in Super Bowl 51, like
- 1:52:54Speaker 2: Danny Amendola.
- 1:52:55Speaker 10: Yeah, the Malcolm Mitchell one.
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: Eldridge in North Carolina. What's up, Eldridge?
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: Hey, I'm going to defend Josh a little bit.
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: And I know everybody wants to jump down his throat
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: and everything, but fellas, it's also on the darn players.
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: Coaches can coach, but players got to play. And if
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: you're getting your butt whooped or you're not, throwing what
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: you need to throw. You can't blame that on the
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: coach all the time. I'm going to agree with David Andrews.
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: I understand Josh calls to win the game. You don't
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: call to put thrills and whistles all over the field.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: But I just got to put that on the players.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: And Evan likes to defend this boy true enough. Mike,
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: he would never be that rah-rah guy because he's laid back.
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: He don't have that killer instinct in him.
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: He don't.
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: He's a laid back dude.
- 1:53:48Speaker 6: I like him.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: He's laid back, but He's got to get fired in
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: some kind of way, but I don't see it coming.
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: You see it in North Carolina, don't see it here.
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: I think it's coming. Thanks, Eldridge.
- 1:53:58Speaker 7: I think it's coming because I think that eventually you
- 1:54:00Speaker 7: just get pissed off about playing poorly and it's just natural.
- 1:54:03Speaker 7: But talking about replacing the rah-rah element, it kind of
- 1:54:07Speaker 7: is on the quarterback. I think that he's got to
- 1:54:10Speaker 7: step into that a little bit more and be willing
- 1:54:12Speaker 7: to be kind of an a-hole.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: Let's just make plays and start to give some of
- 1:54:16Speaker 9: these guys something to feel good about. Together as a team,
- 1:54:20Speaker 9: you can all kind of get that energy back.
- 1:54:23Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: All right. So tomorrow we have our picks.
- 1:54:26Speaker 4: I have a feeling it was a brutal week for me.
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: It was a brutal week for me.
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: For most.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: Oh! Not most. I feel like mine was regression to
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: the mean.
- 1:54:38Speaker 10: I think I did great.
- 1:54:40Speaker 6: There's no one that approaches what some guys are doing.
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: Really? Because I think I was 4-11 or 4-12 on
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: the spread or something like that. I don't think so.
- 1:54:49Speaker 4: No?
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: I thought I was pretty bad.
- 1:54:50Speaker 10: I don't make the picks.
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: I don't keep track, but I just, as the results
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: were coming in, I don't know why it matters so
- 1:54:54Speaker 4: much to me.
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: I think I got that one wrong.
- 1:54:56Speaker 10: I don't make the picks on the show.
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: I felt I was saying that a lot.
- 1:54:59Speaker 6: I did have a couple that I was mocked for.
- 1:55:02Speaker 6: And Evan actually had a hit on the same game.
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: I remember the Monday night game.
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: The Eagles and Bears. That was a tough one.
- 1:55:11Speaker 6: I remember catching a lot of shrapnels.
- 1:55:15Speaker 10: I took the Bears, too.
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: I know I got that one wrong. Evan had it right.
- 1:55:18Speaker 10: That's only Ben Johnson.
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: You had faith in Ben Johnson?
- 1:55:21Speaker 10: I'm not going to pick against Ben Johnson.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: And you were right. You were right. All right.
- 1:55:25Speaker 4: That's going to be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: Like I said, we'll be back tomorrow at 11. Catch
- 1:55:33Speaker 4: 22 back tomorrow at 10. It'll be an interesting one
- 1:55:37Speaker 4: because Barth is the ultimate Bills hater. But we've got
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: to get him to admit at least that Josh Allen's
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: a pretty good quarterback.
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: It's not going to happen. All right.
- 1:55:46Speaker 10: We'll see you tomorrow.
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
