Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Habitual Responses and the Process of Auto-Suggestion Arising from the Action of the Subconscious Level

- 0:01There is a complex interaction between the external mind, life,
- 0:05body complex and the subconscious level of our
- 0:08existence. As we experience various things
- 0:12in our lives, including illness, accidents or various
- 0:16circumstances, our mind tries to build a pattern of recognition
- 0:21and develops a memory. These things then fall into the
- 0:25subconscious level where they remain until a similar
- 0:29situation, circumstance, time frame cycle occurs to trigger
- 0:35that memory and that recognized pattern.
- 0:39This then becomes conscious to our waking awareness as
- 0:42something of an auto suggestion that makes us aware of the
- 0:46pattern and preconditions our mind to accept the situation.
- 0:51Due to the habitual pattern that we have now recognized, we
- 0:55therefore tend to accept as a sort of fate or destiny that
- 1:00certain things will reoccur at particular times of the year.
- 1:03For instance, seasonal illnesses or allergic reactions are
- 1:08strengthened through the subconscious reinforcement of
- 1:11the suggestion, as the pathway and acceptance of the vibration
- 1:15opens up under this pressure. This patterning and auto
- 1:21suggestion works not only for things such as illnesses or
- 1:25allergies, but for all kinds of responses such as a recognized
- 1:30propensity for courtship and mating in the spring, a type of
- 1:35hibernation effect in cold regions during the winter, the
- 1:39habit of midday rest in tropical climates, and the effect of
- 1:44physical training regimens to create habitual patterns of
- 1:47response without active mental intervention to specific types
- 1:52of situations such as athletic competitions or within the
- 1:58framework of a military training and deployment.
- 2:02This type of auto suggestion also creates built in patterns
- 2:05of fear or anxiety in certain situations and creates deep
- 2:10rooted prejudice that results in actions and motivations that may
- 2:16be seen as misogynistic or racist in nature.
- 2:21A disciple asks Mother, there are people who suffer from
- 2:25certain illnesses year after year.
- 2:27We know now if we observe this illness, we see that it comes at
- 2:32a particular time of the year and this goes on the next year
- 2:36also. And it is like that.
- 2:39But the time is fixed. Then what is the reason and how
- 2:43can one get rid of this? The mother responds Quote there
- 2:49could be many reasons. It depends on the person you
- 2:52ask. If you ask an astrologer, he
- 2:56will tell you it is the stars. When the stars come into the
- 3:00same position, the same conditions recur.
- 3:03Well, this is not so wrong. It can be like that.
- 3:08It can also be the individual's reaction to certain types of
- 3:11climate you see, or to the Sun's position where it may be quite
- 3:18simply a bad habit. That's all laughter, and if one
- 3:24forms, if by chance it has happened to you twice
- 3:27consecutively, then you form. You have a good formation, you
- 3:31see, which remains like that with a gesture in the
- 3:35subconscious without showing itself if you don't observe it.
- 3:40And then just when the time draws near, quite gently it
- 3:45pushes up from within and tells you take care the time is
- 3:49coming, the time is coming, the time is coming.
- 3:53So naturally that comes along too.
- 3:57Usually these things are like that, but almost everything that
- 4:02happens in the physical is like that.
- 4:05The first time it may be quite simply a concurrence of
- 4:08circumstances. Then the mind intervenes and
- 4:12makes a construction. Now if one accepts the
- 4:15construction, one is sure that it functions with clockwork
- 4:18precision. But even if one says, oh
- 4:23nonsense, it's only an ideal and does this gestures still.
- 4:29The idea, instead of going away, enters inside into the
- 4:34subconscious, simply the subconscious mind.
- 4:38And there it remains quietly. And then when the time comes to
- 4:43manifest itself from inside like this, it makes a kind of as
- 4:48though it were tickling the memory a little.
- 4:51Nothing more than that. Just that.
- 4:54If it rubs the memory just a little like that, then suddenly
- 4:58one day you remember why last year at this time I was ill and
- 5:04crash. There it is, It is entered, it
- 5:08is entered the zone of the act of consciousness.
- 5:11And a few days later the thing happens.
