- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, this is Freddie Rodriguez. Welcome to Dose a Migos.
- 0:03Speaker 1: You know, sometimes Wilma and I get into these conversations
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we talk and we talk and we talk and
- 0:09Speaker 1: then we press record. And so what you're listening to
- 0:13Speaker 1: is us in the middle of a conversation.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And this conversation was prompted by the unfortunate passing of
- 0:21Speaker 1: James Vanderbeek and it got us on this particular subject matter.
- 0:26Speaker 1: And so rest in peace to him and much blessings
- 0:29Speaker 1: to his family. And here we go.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Hey, you, hey, you welcome back to season two of
- 0:47Speaker 3: two Amigos.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Two of Megos Amigos.
- 0:51Speaker 3: My dad, you know, started fearing death when my when
- 0:57Speaker 3: his grandchildren were born before that, it's like we're all
- 1:01Speaker 3: going to die, right by fearing that. He just didn't
- 1:06Speaker 3: want to miss it. He didn't want to miss my
- 1:09Speaker 3: kids growing up. He didn't want to miss seeing them
- 1:12Speaker 3: become you know, little adults, you know, And he had
- 1:15Speaker 3: a great relationship with you know, you know how it
- 1:17Speaker 3: is like our parents with our grand with our children,
- 1:21Speaker 3: they are born again. Yeah, they become those you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: twenty five twenty six year old old school Latino who
- 1:29Speaker 3: had kids, you know. And I'm being very specific when
- 1:33Speaker 3: I actually say, you know the age, because that was
- 1:38Speaker 3: around the age where our parents, you know, had a family,
- 1:41Speaker 3: started family, sometimes younger. But so when when these babies,
- 1:46Speaker 3: they're holding babies that are part of their family tree,
- 1:51Speaker 3: they're born again as parents, not as grandparents, right, you know,
- 1:55Speaker 3: except they get to give it back at the end
- 1:56Speaker 3: of the night, you know. But what I'm saying is like,
- 2:01Speaker 3: when you talk about this subject, you know, you know, well,
- 2:06Speaker 3: I fear death when he's come next, comes close to
- 2:09Speaker 3: me most likely, right like it, But I'm only going
- 2:13Speaker 3: to fear it because I don't want to let go
- 2:16Speaker 3: of those I love.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Is And do you find that your dad is talking
- 2:22Speaker 1: about it more now or is he?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah? But you know, my dad has had three heart attacks, right,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and he loves them.
- 2:31Speaker 4: He loves heart attacks. It's like the thing.
- 2:33Speaker 3: He just really likes to have them, obviously, I mean
- 2:37Speaker 3: he's had three, yeah, I mean, why else would you
- 2:40Speaker 3: have heart tags if.
- 2:40Speaker 4: You didn't love them.
- 2:41Speaker 2: He just induces them.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And the reason why I say that shit is because
- 2:46Speaker 3: my dad didn't take care of himself right like he
- 2:49Speaker 3: was the old school day he goes well, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: more salt, yeah, no dessert, okay, little whiskey every night.
- 2:57Speaker 3: You know, Like my dad was that old school dude
- 3:00Speaker 3: with the shirt open and the you know, the the
- 3:04Speaker 3: gold chain and the uh the tiny tropical forest, the.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Chest, you know that the air, the hairy chest.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, the hairy chest that looked like like the
- 3:15Speaker 3: Amazonian you know, rainforest.
- 3:19Speaker 4: You know it was that you know.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Hey, you know, and and like he he lived that life, right,
- 3:23Speaker 3: So anyways, they say all this stuff to basically say
- 3:25Speaker 3: that that, you know, when we fear it comes faster.
- 3:32Speaker 2: You know that's interesting cause.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know when we live it, you know, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 3: we're kind of acceptance. But I will say that there's
- 3:42Speaker 3: always a different phase, right, There's always this different thing
- 3:45Speaker 3: that happens in your life that makes you go, I'm
- 3:47Speaker 3: not ready.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 3: You know that's why what you said earlier today, like
- 3:52Speaker 3: it really hits me, right, because I got to tell you,
- 3:54Speaker 3: like it's we got to say it now. Yeah, we
- 3:58Speaker 3: have to say now. We have to say I love
- 4:00Speaker 3: you now. We have to you know, make the trick.
- 4:02Speaker 3: We have to drive farther, we have to make that trip.
- 4:06Speaker 3: You know, you have to say it you know, you
- 4:08Speaker 3: have to just do it now. And you know, especially
- 4:11Speaker 3: the same things in our careers. Right if you don't
- 4:13Speaker 3: make the phone call on your behalf now, we're gonna
- 4:15Speaker 3: wait another five years before you have the confidence to
- 4:17Speaker 3: make that phone cause to say no, I am actually
- 4:19Speaker 3: worth of the shot. Just let them say no right now.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I don't want to hear no ten years later, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 3: right right. But it's like it's relative right to like time,
- 4:29Speaker 3: because I think that's kind of the theme of what
- 4:31Speaker 3: we're talking about, is that, yeah, you know, what do you.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Do with time? Yeah?
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, And thank you for joining us, everybody. This is
- 4:37Speaker 1: Freddie Rodriguez and I'm Wilmer vald Rama. This is uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: what is this real podcast?
- 4:43Speaker 2: Podcast?
- 4:44Speaker 1: You've caught us in the middle of a conversation. You know,
- 4:46Speaker 1: James Vanderbeek passed away and wolver knew him and and
- 4:52Speaker 1: he's close to our age, and so we started to
- 4:54Speaker 1: have this conversation about about death and mortality, and so
- 4:59Speaker 1: you've caught us in the middle of this conversation and
- 5:02Speaker 1: how tragic his situation is.
- 5:04Speaker 4: And at a certain.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Point, I just I turned to a woomer and I
- 5:08Speaker 1: was like, yo, I.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Love you man.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You know, I love you, bro, because we're not promised tomorrow,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you know, right, he wasn't, and he left behind, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 1: for five kids. I think he is, I mean, young guy.
- 5:22Speaker 1: What was he forty eight years old and colon cancer
- 5:26Speaker 1: he had?
- 5:26Speaker 2: I mean, just just how terrible.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I just had a cousin who's forty something years old,
- 5:33Speaker 1: younger than him, who just died of leukemia and left
- 5:37Speaker 1: behind a twelve year old and a ten year old
- 5:40Speaker 1: and a widower. And you know, he's dealing with that
- 5:45Speaker 1: right now. So it's been a very prevalent subject matter
- 5:49Speaker 1: in my life in the last few years. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: my mom just passed away about four four months ago,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and my pop a couple of years ago, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: So it's but it's an interesting conversation to have with
- 6:02Speaker 1: you about your pop and how he's facing mortality as
- 6:07Speaker 1: it pertains to like your kids, and and how like
- 6:10Speaker 1: your kids have given him this news sort of least
- 6:14Speaker 1: on life. Do you think do you think that that
- 6:17Speaker 1: your kids have made him more conscious of because you
- 6:20Speaker 1: said he loves heart attacks because he does everything to
- 6:24Speaker 1: induce him.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah, he just really I think he likes the food
- 6:29Speaker 3: at the hospital. I think that, yeah, really hard to
- 6:32Speaker 3: do that. At home, he likes bungebats.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You put more, you put more sauce on it. At home,
- 6:36Speaker 4: I think he likes playing food.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you think that he's been more conscious of
- 6:41Speaker 1: of of that, of of what he what he's eating,
- 6:44Speaker 1: what he's drawing.
- 6:46Speaker 3: He lost a lot of his bad weight, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and you know he's walking more's when he's just hanging on.
- 6:54Speaker 3: It's just like I got to get tell of those
- 6:56Speaker 3: years back, and that's what he's up to, That's what
- 6:58Speaker 3: he's doing.
- 6:59Speaker 4: And I think my my children I think really triggered that.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You know, I think it really Uh, the conversations I
- 7:06Speaker 4: used to dot with my dad before.
- 7:08Speaker 3: We're like, hey, you know, I lived a good one.
- 7:11Speaker 3: If it happens, you know me, Oh now it's your turn.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:17Speaker 3: As soon as my children were born, they're like, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you know she's getting Am I going to miss that?
- 7:23Speaker 4: Am I going to miss that?
- 7:24Speaker 1: You know?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:26Speaker 2: You think he kind of took that back.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, especially because.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Because when he had the last heart attack, I kind
- 7:35Speaker 3: of was like maybe two years old or something. It's
- 7:38Speaker 3: the first thing he mentioned. He's like, no, I just
- 7:41Speaker 3: have no more time with her, you know, And I'll say,
- 7:44Speaker 3: what about me?
- 7:45Speaker 4: Father?
- 7:46Speaker 2: About me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Liver. How old is it
- 8:01Speaker 2: do my dad?
- 8:03Speaker 3: I think it's about seventy And I say, I don't
- 8:05Speaker 3: know his real age because he always makes it up.
- 8:09Speaker 3: My mom's some thing like, you know, they came from
- 8:12Speaker 3: a generation most of you guys might or might not
- 8:15Speaker 3: relate to this. He came from a generation where, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 3: no one applied for the birth certificate. They just took
- 8:24Speaker 3: the kids home or they were home births, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and then they were like, oh, that's right, he's four
- 8:28Speaker 3: years old.
- 8:28Speaker 4: We need to apply for the birth certificate. That's that
- 8:31Speaker 4: old school thing. My mom is one out of fourteen,
- 8:35Speaker 4: same mom and dad.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Wow, like my mom yeah and yeah. So you know,
- 8:42Speaker 2: for her, it was like.
- 8:43Speaker 3: They went and they took a bunch of them at
- 8:45Speaker 3: the same time to get their birth certificate. She doesn't
- 8:47Speaker 3: know why year she was really born. So she's like
- 8:50Speaker 3: on paper she's like eighty nine or something. I don't know,
- 8:53Speaker 3: but she's really like probably seventy, you know, seventy one
- 8:56Speaker 3: maybe or seventy maybe.
- 8:58Speaker 4: My dad probably is like early.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I mean, you know, do you think that your mother
- 9:02Speaker 2: feels the same way as your dad.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Do you think that she was at first sort of
- 9:06Speaker 1: resigned the like, well, if it happens, it happens.
- 9:09Speaker 3: But now with the kids, I don't think she thinks
- 9:12Speaker 3: about it as much. At least she doesn't bring it
- 9:14Speaker 3: up as much.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Well, she hasn't had three art attacks. No, No, she
- 9:19Speaker 2: doesn't like them. She doesn't like them.
- 9:23Speaker 4: That's where my dad and mom are so different.
- 9:26Speaker 3: But no, but you know why, I think my mom
- 9:30Speaker 3: has so much fight in her. She is like like
- 9:33Speaker 3: a she's bill like like a bull, like a pit bull.
- 9:37Speaker 3: You know, she's just like a She's like a tough player.
- 9:41Speaker 3: She still gets up in the morning. She cleans her
- 9:44Speaker 3: entire house by herself, you know, like she she does
- 9:48Speaker 3: her her her laundry and her her big comforters. And
- 9:54Speaker 3: let me explain what I mean by that. She grabs
- 9:56Speaker 3: the big comforter from the house, from the from the bedroom.
- 9:59Speaker 3: She she walks it all the way downstairs, right, she
- 10:02Speaker 3: hands washes it, oh right, like cool, because she's like,
- 10:07Speaker 3: we can't put it in the musher because it just
- 10:08Speaker 3: doesn't move because it's too big.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, And then.
- 10:14Speaker 4: You know, and then she's like it's analog.
- 10:16Speaker 3: She like is washing her dogs herself, she's doing and
- 10:19Speaker 3: you know, like she's still very very driven and she's
- 10:22Speaker 3: still living her life.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And you know he's still cooking for herself and doing
- 10:26Speaker 4: her thing.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And think those are the indicators when like, you know,
- 10:30Speaker 3: she's still really swinging hard.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. My mom was like that too.
- 10:35Speaker 1: She was uh, you know, you know it was she
- 10:39Speaker 1: she was married to my dad for fifty five years
- 10:42Speaker 1: and then my dad passed away suddenly in a freak accident,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and then and then all of a sudden she was alone.
- 10:48Speaker 2: So for her, she was always that independent.
- 10:50Speaker 1: But but there was a learning curb of of what
- 10:55Speaker 1: it was like to just suddenly from one moment to
- 10:58Speaker 1: the next to be uh single, uh, to be a widow,
- 11:03Speaker 1: widow widow.
- 11:04Speaker 2: I think it's a core terminology.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Uh.
- 11:07Speaker 1: But but same as your mom. Man, just tough and
- 11:10Speaker 1: feisty and and didn't didn't fear death. Man even even
- 11:15Speaker 1: to her laugh bro Uh yeah, yes, sir, you face time.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Her laugh was just uh yes, yes, yes, we fat,
- 11:25Speaker 1: thank you man, thank you for that. I I remember
- 11:27Speaker 1: we were face timing and she was she was going
- 11:29Speaker 1: through chemotherapy and you you were so gracious and and
- 11:33Speaker 1: you got on the FaceTime with her and said hi
- 11:35Speaker 1: to her, and and and my mom doesn't didn't speak English,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and so that was nice.
- 11:40Speaker 2: That you got.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Don't speak English. I just learned this thing, you know.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah man.
- 11:48Speaker 1: But she but she didn't fear it towards the end either.
- 11:50Speaker 1: She was I think, I think because my pop wasn't there.
- 11:54Speaker 1: She was she was, she was ready, you know, she
- 11:57Speaker 1: was ready.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But she had.
- 11:59Speaker 1: She had answer twice. Also she had uh uh uh
- 12:03Speaker 1: three times. Actually she had she had breast cancer. By
- 12:06Speaker 1: the third time, the breast cancer spread to her pancreas
- 12:09Speaker 1: and then.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But she was a fighter, Like what a badass, dude.
- 12:14Speaker 3: It's like really tough battle right there.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yeah yeah man.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And she went through hospice and uh man, I you know,
- 12:22Speaker 1: uh for those out there who have gone through hospice
- 12:25Speaker 1: with their parents is uh is a completely different experience.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'd love to do a documentary on on what that's like,
- 12:32Speaker 1: because it's uh to from the moment that you find
- 12:37Speaker 1: out that your your parent is dying and and and
- 12:42Speaker 1: you make that decision that they're going in the hospice
- 12:44Speaker 1: is just sort of like a like a death sentence almost.
- 12:47Speaker 2: You know, it's like you're you're.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Watching your parents deteriorate, uh until until they finally die.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And I was there at the moment she she passed away.
- 12:55Speaker 2: You know, I was.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I was on a FaceTime with you actually, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: she she she was downstairs and I was like, oh,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I got this FaceTime with Warmer. Let me let me
- 13:04Speaker 1: go upstairs and take this FaceTime. And Elsie came in
- 13:07Speaker 1: and you know, so there you go.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Man, I was on with you. Yeah.
- 13:11Speaker 3: No, I actually, however, I hope it sounds, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 3: as more of a humbling and beautiful reflection. I was
- 13:21Speaker 3: actually honored to kind of be with you in that
- 13:24Speaker 3: moment and when it was happening, because I know you
- 13:26Speaker 3: guys were waiting for it. So as we move into
- 13:39Speaker 3: like the mentality, the understanding, the acceptance, what do you
- 13:45Speaker 3: feel it's worth investing in now? Understanding what we know
- 13:51Speaker 3: about death but we know about when it ends, Like
- 13:54Speaker 3: what what do we invest in right now?
- 13:56Speaker 4: What is the immediate advice you give people right now?
- 13:59Speaker 1: Like what is stop what you're doing and do this
- 14:03Speaker 1: is to value time, to be cognizant of time and
- 14:06Speaker 1: how important time is Uh, not to say that that
- 14:12Speaker 1: I or my brothers were not, but but I think
- 14:16Speaker 1: sometimes when you're going through something like hospice, you're in
- 14:19Speaker 1: a stage of denial that that that that it's happening.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And so maybe throughout that stage of denial, at least
- 14:28Speaker 1: for me, I'm speaking for myself, sometimes I was not
- 14:32Speaker 1: I should have been better about time maybe, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I think back I was like, oh, man, maybe I
- 14:37Speaker 1: should have did more FaceTime calls with her, or man,
- 14:40Speaker 1: maybe I should have flown down to Chicago more. Because
- 14:44Speaker 1: because once the time, once the time is up, it's up,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and then that's it. Then you can never get it
- 14:49Speaker 1: back after.
- 14:49Speaker 3: That's an interesting balance, right, it's really interesting time. You know,
- 14:53Speaker 3: time life so fun you think about, okay, well, the
- 14:56Speaker 3: circle of life is that they raise us to be adults.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Then you start your family.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Then you've got to make choices based on either your
- 15:03Speaker 3: career the profession, and you've got to move away and
- 15:07Speaker 3: and it's it's it's a very common thing. You know,
- 15:11Speaker 3: unless you can have your family close by, it's really
- 15:15Speaker 3: a coming thing that they're going to be in a
- 15:16Speaker 3: different state, you know, or they're going to be far
- 15:18Speaker 3: away or all that it's kind of consequences of that is.
- 15:21Speaker 3: I feel like as parents, at some point we come
- 15:25Speaker 3: to the realization and understanding that like that's going to happen,
- 15:29Speaker 3: our kids are going to live somewhere else. But we
- 15:31Speaker 3: did our job and we had our moment, right. I
- 15:34Speaker 3: don't know that I'll have to be ready for that, right.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I Mean, it's like it's the toughest part to think
- 15:38Speaker 3: about that. But you know, I guess that if I take,
- 15:42Speaker 3: you know, extract the hope and what you're saying, I
- 15:47Speaker 3: would say that like call them a little more often,
- 15:51Speaker 3: right or like or like or whatever. But at the
- 15:53Speaker 3: same time, also understand that, you know, you're also living
- 15:56Speaker 3: a life, right, You're also raising your kids, and you're
- 16:00Speaker 3: your family and the whole thing.
- 16:01Speaker 4: And it's tough, you know. I think, you know, I
- 16:05Speaker 4: would say we're.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Gifted and blessed in the in the sense that we
- 16:09Speaker 3: can do this this creative and and healing, powerful medium
- 16:15Speaker 3: of entertainment, right, Like we can really you know, bring
- 16:19Speaker 3: a laugh or an extraordinary story to two fans around
- 16:23Speaker 3: the world.
- 16:24Speaker 4: You know, what do we do for ourselves?
- 16:27Speaker 3: I think that's a tough question, right, because I don't
- 16:30Speaker 3: think people understand how much time we're away from our
- 16:34Speaker 3: friends and family, right, Like I mean you think about
- 16:36Speaker 3: like when you used to hang out with your friends
- 16:38Speaker 3: all the time, right, Like how did that? How did
- 16:40Speaker 3: that become? You know, like did you you know, how
- 16:43Speaker 3: do you bring them along so you still have that tied,
- 16:47Speaker 3: you know, bond. You know from the beginning, it's a
- 16:49Speaker 3: tough thing. You know, same thing with a family, like
- 16:51Speaker 3: you got to like, you know, somehow you have to
- 16:54Speaker 3: understand like either they come with or you're gonna miss
- 16:57Speaker 3: chunks of life, especially when you do this on running shows,
- 17:00Speaker 3: like you know, I'm doing a show that you know,
- 17:03Speaker 3: it's been out fo you know twenty three years, we're
- 17:06Speaker 3: going into we're going into our twenty four season and
- 17:09Speaker 3: you're my tenth Wow, I've done it. By the end
- 17:13Speaker 3: of this season twenty three right now, it'll be I will,
- 17:16Speaker 3: I will. I would have shot two hundred episodes of NCIS.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And how many how many episodes? How many seasons did
- 17:22Speaker 1: you do of a seventy show?
- 17:24Speaker 3: Eight And I did two hundred episodes of that, So
- 17:28Speaker 3: I've already surpassed many years of seventy show on this show.
- 17:32Speaker 3: But I say those things because you also think about
- 17:34Speaker 3: like how much time we're really away from things is tough, right,
- 17:39Speaker 3: because I mean I get I get up a four
- 17:41Speaker 3: three in the morning, I work out, I go to said.
- 17:43Speaker 4: By seven am, we're shooting.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, my wife and my daughter, they're like living a
- 17:48Speaker 3: full life. And then in those thirteen hours, right, you know, doing.
- 17:52Speaker 1: What you have to do in order to have the
- 17:55Speaker 1: light and to help support. But you know you asked
- 17:57Speaker 1: about advice. You know, not only is it time, but
- 18:00Speaker 1: it's you know what also happens after they're gone, is
- 18:04Speaker 1: it's it's it's traumatic, right, so then you have to
- 18:07Speaker 1: deal with the trauma of what just occourage. You know.
- 18:12Speaker 2: I find that that.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Forgiveness is really important, you know, like like whether whether
- 18:18Speaker 1: it's now or it's later, you know, there's there ever
- 18:21Speaker 1: anything like that that you need to sort of feel
- 18:25Speaker 1: that you need to resolve. You know, I'm not speaking
- 18:28Speaker 1: on my behalf. I just had this really interesting conversation yesterday,
- 18:31Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, with someone who lost somebody,
- 18:34Speaker 1: and and the whole forgiveness factor had come up, you know,
- 18:38Speaker 1: And and the reason why that was so important is
- 18:40Speaker 1: because the person who I was talking to feels doesn't
- 18:45Speaker 1: feel healed and still feels this sense of deep guilt
- 18:50Speaker 1: and all of this other stuff. Even though the parent
- 18:53Speaker 1: is gone, there's still they're still reliving the trauma because
- 18:57Speaker 1: the forgiveness is not in place, was not in.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Place, you know.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So I don't know if that happens before or after,
- 19:05Speaker 1: but but forgiveness is such a it's such an important
- 19:09Speaker 1: component in order for for your healing process to happen
- 19:13Speaker 1: and for a departure to your next chapter or to
- 19:16Speaker 1: to now coexist with the thought that you know you're
- 19:19Speaker 1: closing you know, the last chapter as well, right.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And and you know when we had like Lewis Hall
- 19:27Speaker 1: here last, you know, and he talked about the foundation
- 19:31Speaker 1: of everything that he does is all about healing, you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: and and and that's part of it, you know, the
- 19:37Speaker 1: healing that has to happen between you and a parent
- 19:39Speaker 1: or or another loved one, you know, whether it happens
- 19:42Speaker 1: while they're living or after, but you have to find
- 19:45Speaker 1: that that healing, and a lot of that healing comes
- 19:48Speaker 1: from forgiveness.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Huh.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 3: I mean I always remain grateful that you'll be so
- 19:54Speaker 3: willing to open and explore these things. You know, I
- 19:57Speaker 3: don't know how often you get to talk about, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 3: this revelation with your with your mother and your family
- 20:03Speaker 3: and which you are now. So I'm grateful that you're
- 20:05Speaker 3: willing to share it for everybody and all the fans
- 20:08Speaker 3: of those a egos. It is, you know, it's you
- 20:13Speaker 3: live long enough, you're gonna have to inevitably learn to
- 20:19Speaker 3: endure these changes. And you know, we we we definitely,
- 20:25Speaker 3: we definitely have to kind of just roll with what's
- 20:28Speaker 3: giving to us, right. You know, you don't pick it,
- 20:30Speaker 3: You know, you don't choose it, but you don't.
- 20:33Speaker 2: Just like James Vanderbig didn't pick it. Right, And here
- 20:36Speaker 2: we are having this conversation, you know, here we are.
- 20:39Speaker 1: We open up the papers and look on Instagram this morning,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and there's this picture with his obituary.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Next to it, right, and in our love and prayers
- 20:47Speaker 3: obviously of strength and love to his wife and his
- 20:52Speaker 3: beautiful family.
- 20:53Speaker 4: And you know, I hope that they'll never forget, and
- 20:58Speaker 4: I know they won't how much you know, how much
- 21:04Speaker 4: love he spread through his art.
- 21:06Speaker 3: You know, he was such an iconic image for an
- 21:10Speaker 3: entire generation, and I think he left so much.
- 21:16Speaker 4: A trail of just like goodness, and.
- 21:19Speaker 2: You guys had shows on it at the same time.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he premier in nineteen ninety eight on Dawson's Creek
- 21:23Speaker 3: and a premiere on that seventies show in nineteen ninety
- 21:26Speaker 3: eight as well.
- 21:27Speaker 4: He was on the WV and we were on Fox.
- 21:30Speaker 3: But we were both the first TV casts, Yeah, to
- 21:36Speaker 3: really do both film and TV. Oh yeah, so he
- 21:42Speaker 3: broke round also, ye, you know, he went into Varsity
- 21:46Speaker 3: Blues and he was a phenomenon and all of a
- 21:48Speaker 3: sudden he's doing movies.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Right and then doing Dozon's Creek.
- 21:52Speaker 1: And for the fan base that's listening, you know, back then,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you were either a TV actor, you were a film actor,
- 22:00Speaker 1: and like you know, there there was no cross pollinating,
- 22:03Speaker 1: you know, and that was when it first started to happen.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and so he's one of those pioneers and we
- 22:07Speaker 3: the young ins of that time. Is when when the
- 22:10Speaker 3: students started gambling and these team sensations to cross over
- 22:14Speaker 3: to film.
- 22:16Speaker 4: The box office was a different place, you know, and.
- 22:18Speaker 3: I think that you know, it was Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson,
- 22:22Speaker 3: you know, Michelle Williams. I mean, like that whole cast
- 22:25Speaker 3: redefined what you you know, you could do whatever you wanted, right,
- 22:29Speaker 3: you know, the same thing happen with the seven Intil cast.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Everyone. You could do whatever you want.
- 22:32Speaker 3: You can go to movies, you can go TV, you
- 22:34Speaker 3: can do you know. And uh, and that's thanks to
- 22:37Speaker 3: the loyalty and the trust of the fans. But you know,
- 22:40Speaker 3: going full circle to back to James, like he you know,
- 22:43Speaker 3: we always all of us, they're they're casting. Our cast
- 22:46Speaker 3: always were invited to the same events were the young ins.
- 22:49Speaker 3: You know, it's like the Team People magazine event or
- 22:52Speaker 3: like the Team you know, Tiger Bead or the Planet
- 22:55Speaker 3: Hollywood round tables, you know where you come in and
- 22:59Speaker 3: you're like, oh, okay, those are the Wonder Brothers. You know,
- 23:02Speaker 3: the Dawson's Creek and you know Wayne's brothers. You know,
- 23:06Speaker 3: like right there they're over there and then then over here.
- 23:08Speaker 3: It's like, uh, you know the seventies showcast and get
- 23:12Speaker 3: real and you know, mack them in the middle and
- 23:15Speaker 3: you know, like with everyone who was doing their stuff.
- 23:17Speaker 2: But but yeah, we were we were young.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah would but look, I mean, I guess
- 23:25Speaker 3: unintentionally we educate this episode to James, you know, and
- 23:28Speaker 3: and he's trajectory. Most importantly what he left behind, which
- 23:32Speaker 3: is millions of fans around the world inspired and UH
- 23:36Speaker 3: and our love and and princes of our family as well.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah to James and two.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And to everybody else out there who who's dealing with
- 23:44Speaker 1: loss and UH and and and what comes with loss,
- 23:48Speaker 1: and and and the pain and the trauma that comes
- 23:51Speaker 1: with loss. You know, I hope that our conversation today
- 23:55Speaker 1: helped just a little bit.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Drama.
