- 0:07On October 8, 1967, the Boston Red Sox faced the St. Louis Cardinals at Bush Stadium for Game 4 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:16The Cardinals led the best of seven series two games to one, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 4 featuring announcers Pee Wee Reese and Ken Coleman.
- 0:26The Cardinals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-386 to straightaway left and straightaway right field and 414 to center field here at Bush Memorial Stadium.
- 0:38And I guess Pee Wee is what the ballplayers would refer to as an honest ballpark.
- 0:43It certainly is. There's nothing cheap about a home run in this ballpark. Of course, Fenway, they have the real short left field.
- 0:49If you hit a home run in this park, you deserve it. And the wind is blowing out a little bit today.
- 0:56I think the ball to left field, Eddie Bursu, the shortstop, has played here at the Cardinals and also played with Boston,
- 1:02said that the ball carries better to left field and left center than does to right field.
- 1:07And I was down there watching batting practice, and they were jumping out there pretty good in left field today.
- 1:13And now let's go to the starting lineups, which are basically the same. For Boston, Jose Tardible will lead off playing in right field.
- 1:24Dalvin Jones will bat second and play third. Carl Yastremski is in left.
- 1:31George Scott will be in the fourth position in the batting order at first base.
- 1:36Reggie Smith is the center fielder batting fifth at his first World Series home run yesterday.
- 1:43Jerry Adair will play second. Batting seventh and playing shortstop is Rego Petrocelli.
- 1:52The catcher, the veteran, Elston Howard. And on the mound, Jose Santiago.
- 2:00Santiago started the series opener in Boston, losing 2-1 to Gibson. He worked seven innings to allow two runs, 10 hits,
- 2:08walked three and struck out five, and accounted for the only Boston run of the game with a third inning home run on an 0-2 count.
- 2:17He had one home run during the regular season. This is his second year with Boston.
- 2:24He has a record over those two years of 24 and 17. Jose is 6'2", 190 pounds, 27 years old from Puerto Rico.
- 2:38Now for St. Louis. Lou Brock leads off playing in left field, and he has been one of the key men in this series so far.
- 2:50Mike Flood is in center field batting second. Roger Maris in right field will bat third.
- 2:57Orlando Cepeda, who came up with a big hit here yesterday, his first hit in the World Series, will be at first base.
- 3:06Tim McAver is working in back of the play. Mike Shannon will be at third.
- 3:13Julian Javier is at second. Dale Maxville at shortstop, and Bob Gibson is on the mound.
- 3:27Right now, down below, for this tremendous crowd, which will be in the vicinity of 54,000 feet, the Red Sox starting lineup is being introduced.
- 3:40We told you about Santiago, so we move over now to Bob Gibson.
- 3:45He is 3-1 in World Series competition, and only one St. Louis Cardinal pitcher has ever won four series games.
- 3:54Harry Brichin. Brichin was 0-1 in 1943, 1-0 in 1944, and 3-1 against Boston in 1946.
- 4:06Gibson has pitched three consecutive complete game victories in the series after losing his first series game in 1964 to the Yankees here in St. Louis, working eight innings.
- 4:19And I think it's significant to point out his strikeout total in series competition. He has fanned 41 batters in his 36 series innings, with his strikeout totals per game at 9, 13, 9, and 10.
- 4:36His 31 strikeouts in the 1964 series set a record.
- 4:42So with more pregame color in just a moment.
- 4:48At first base, from the American League, Ed Rungy.
- 4:53At second base, from the National League, Paul Frier.
- 4:57At third base, John Stevens of the American League.
- 5:02Down the right field line, Frank Umont of the American League, and down the left field line, Al Barlich of the National League.
- 5:12The umpires have deployed to their positions. The conference is at home plate over.
- 5:19And of course, the managers are very familiar with the ground rules, which are really relatively simple here.
- 5:27Gibson has completed his warm-up throw, has gone back into the St. Louis dugout, and right now Santiago is on his way in from left field, where he has been warming up with Red Sox catcher, Russ Gibson.
- 5:41A wonderful crowd on hand here today for the fourth game.
- 5:46Jose Tadebo, who will lead off for Boston, has just come out of the dugout into the on-deck circle.
- 5:54Although the St. Louis Cardinals have not yet taken the field, as Frankie Frisch, the Fordham Flash and one of the great ones for the St. Louis Cardinals years ago,
- 6:07a member of baseball's Hall of Fame has just now, or is in the process right now, of throwing out the first ball for today's game.
- 6:19And on the mound, taking his warm-up throws with his catcher, Tim McArthur, Orlando Cepetas at first base, Oleon Hobby Air at second,
- 6:28Dalmach, Phyllis shortstop, and Mike Shannon at third. In left field is Lou Brock. In center, Kirk Flood. The right fielder is Roger Maris.
- 6:38McCarver throws the ball down to second. The team keepers pepper it around. Third baseman, Shannon, turns it over to Gibson, and the big, strong right-hander is ready to go to work.
- 6:51And we're set for the first pitch of game four in the 1967 series. Here is Pee Wee Reeves.
- 6:58Okay, Ken, thank you very much. Big Bob Gibson on the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals. They're trying to make it three to one and play with the Cardinals game-wise here today.
- 7:07Carderball takes the first pitch of ball one. That pitch is in there for call strike one.
- 7:12Bob Gibson has a real good fastball, good curveball. He can overpower you, as everyone knows in baseball.
- 7:21Here is the pitch. Carderball ties in the ball into left field. Line drives out on the third base line.
- 7:32Gibson, as Ken told you, has won three games in the series for him.
- 7:43There's only one other fellow that's done that. That's Harry Bethe. Carderball hits a line ball shot down to Sepetive, picks it up and puts it over to Bob Gibson coming first.
- 7:54That ball was hit hard to Peta down on one knee. He pummels the ball, picks it up, throws it over to Bob Gibson and it's won away.
- 8:05And that brings up Dawson Jones.
- 8:12Gibson doesn't take too much time. He's looking down to Tim McCarver.
- 8:18Here's the pitch. A curveball, a little high on outside, ball one.
- 8:23Here we have Dawson who had three hits here yesterday and he says he was just trying to hit that ball back up the middle until he gets a better feel of these pitchers.
- 8:34Gibson's fastball is in there. Call strike one, one ball and one strike.
- 8:39Well, Ken, I haven't seen Dawson Jones too much, but what I've seen of him, I like this young fellow with that fastball in his hand.
- 8:46Very smooth.
- 8:47Bob Gibson as the ball hit hard down the right field line is bowed way back up in the stands.
- 8:57Jones looks like he's not swinging too hard.
- 9:02He just tries to hit the ball, worse pitch. He'll hit it to left field, back through the middle. If it's inside, he'll pull it.
- 9:08Bob Gibson shakes his head. He's ready. Here is the pitch.
- 9:12Ball jamming with Gibson up with the ball. Slips the ball over the tabata. It's two up and two down here.
- 9:18At the first stadium, bad luck.
- 9:22Gibson, who is a very good fielder out there on the mound, it's hard to get a ball by.
- 9:33If you want to have fun on him, it has better be perfect. Now this brings up the great left fielder for Carl Yosemstki.
- 9:45He holds his bat high. Gibson first picks up a curveball.
- 9:51Inside for ball one. Gibson completely shackles Yosemstki in the first gear.
- 10:01He's got a back in the second game. He's got two home runs. They study magic.
- 10:05Let's see what he does today at curveball.
- 10:08Ending up a called strike one. One ball and one strike.
- 10:13It's two away.
- 10:16We're in the first inning here at first stadium. Ken Coleman and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you today's game.
- 10:24Another curveball. Face hit out into the right field. Roger Maes over to cut that ball off.
- 10:28Down on one knee. The throw into down back for the shortstop. Huffing back in the first base. Yosemstki.
- 10:36So that's his first base hit off Bob Gibson.
- 10:41And it brings up George Tater Scott, the big first baser.
- 10:49George Scott lives down in Rainbow, Mississippi. He's 23 years old.
- 10:56Another one of the fine young ball players at the Red Sox.
- 11:01They have a back ball now. Dandy in there for called strike one.
- 11:05Two away. Call Yosemstki on his first base.
- 11:09Bob Gibson, as I told you, does not take much time.
- 11:13The curve is giving him time. Gibson's shack looks over Yosemstki.
- 11:18Here's the pitch.
- 11:20Back ball in there for called strike two. Just got that outside corner.
- 11:24Gibson really moves that ball around. He's in and out, up and down.
- 11:29Scott was one of the few men who could stall Gibson the other day.
- 11:33He was two out of three against Bob as Bob struck out ten at Fenway Park.
- 11:40Two strikes.
- 11:42On George Scott.
- 11:44He's stuck out.
- 11:46And that's all for George Scott. That's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of the first inning.
- 11:52There's a sore here at first stadium. The Red Sox nothing and the Cardinals coming to bat.
- 11:58It's really done a job, and especially against Santiago in game one.
- 12:03And I'm speaking of the great left fielder of the Cardinals, Luke Rock, who is 6-4-12 in this World Series.
- 12:10Jose could not keep him off the bases in game one, so he's got to face that challenge here today.
- 12:18Is that there to control these Cardinals? It's a pretty good idea to keep Rock off of those tracks.
- 12:24Santiago into his windup. Here's the pitch. Rock taking all the way. It's low. Ball one.
- 12:32Six for twelve. A cool five hundred. That ain't bad.
- 12:38Santiago on his warmup. Here's the pitch. Rock looks like he won the first one.
- 12:42It's in there for called strike one. When the bottom half of the first inning, here at First City, no sore in this ball game.
- 12:48The Red Sox have one hit, and that was by Carl Giuseppe, coaching at first base for the Cardinals.
- 12:55Dick Siffler at third base. Joe Schultz. Rock holds that backtrick up in the air.
- 13:01Santiago's pitch. Back ball is tapped down to third. Dalton Jones is the fair ball. The long throw. They didn't get it.
- 13:22What it looked like a routine play going down to Dalton Jones, and by the last moment, that ball bounced a little bit,
- 13:29and it just took that little bit more for Jones to get that ball to first base to George Scott, and Luke Brock beat it out.
- 13:37So now that brings up her clirk. Luke Brock on it first. You'd better watch it.
- 13:43Santiago. The pitch. And Brock makes a bluff, and Elton Howard out in front of that home plate, ready to make the throw.
- 13:54Santiago had Brock steal two times on him in the first game of the World Series, and Brock said he found his flaw in Santiago's delivery,
- 14:04but Scott said, the first baseman, that he just took off like nobody he'd ever seen.
- 14:11Found the flaw, huh? Well, he has terrific speed.
- 14:15Santiago just threw over there, and I imagine he'll walk him rather close, because the fans are hollering, go, go, go, and don't be surprised if he doesn't.
- 14:23He didn't on that pitch right down in there for call strike one.
- 14:26I imagine Flirt taking the first two, so he's giving Brock the chance to run if he wants to.
- 14:33Flirt checking with his third base coach, Joe Shook.
- 14:40It's Brock, an exciting ball player. He loves the run. He stole 52 bases during the regular season.
- 14:49Santiago watching closer. Here comes the pitch. It's a fast ball. It's a little low.
- 14:55Gets away from Elton Howard, and Elton looks like he's a little anxious to grab that ball, thinking that Brock may go.
- 15:04And Howard knows he has to grab that ball and hurry and get rid of it.
- 15:09We're in the bottom half of the first inning. No score.
- 15:14The Red Sox fail to score in the top half of it. The Cardinals are at bat here now with the runner on his first base.
- 15:22They throw the first base. Back easily, Lou Brock. Two balls, one strike on Kirk Flirt.
- 15:31Waiting that bat around. Let's watch.
- 15:34Santiago looks over to here to pick. The base hit out of the left field. The Red Sox get the ball, and Flirt will not try to go to third, as the Red Sox get that ball back in a hurry.
- 15:46But he does move down to second. Brock does, and Kirk Flirt is on it first.
- 15:51So, Santiago, who got into a lot of trouble up at Fenway Park in the first game, is getting himself in a jam here again.
- 16:02I should say, as the first two Cardinals are on, Brock with the infield hit and Flirt with a ringing line singled into left field.
- 16:11And it brings to the plate Roger Maris, who drove in the two runs for the Cardinals in that first game to one victory.
- 16:22Roger Maris, who said that this is the happiest he's ever been playing with this Cardinals.
- 16:28Flickering into pro ball. The first 50 taking all the way of fur ball in there by Santiago.
- 16:33Strike one. Brock down at second. Flirt at first.
- 16:37I don't believe you could find two faster men in baseball that are out there right now.
- 16:43Santiago checks Brock back at second. Looks again. Here's the pitch.
- 16:48Here's the situation out in the left field. Here comes Brock in the store. Your first two over to cut the ball off.
- 16:58And Maris is in the second with a double.
- 17:18And quickly the Cardinals have scored two runs here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 17:29And Brock Flirt, score on a two base hit by Roger Maris out into left field.
- 17:41And he's beginning to drizzle just a little bit. Here at first stadium in San Luis. Orlando Cepeda is the hitter.
- 17:50He's got a base that he's last time up yesterday. Santiago looks back at Maris.
- 17:54Cepeda hits a little laser looper out into right field.
- 17:57Cardinal comes running. He comes up with a smash. He's hanging up. Here comes the throw. Can they get it? No.
- 18:13Cepeda with no one out, the runner on his second base trying to get Roger Maris over to serve hits the ball on the ground.
- 18:23After the right side hits a fly ball, Cardinal had to run a long waiting.
- 18:28He comes up with Roger Maris surprised a few people. He's tagged up and just barely made it.
- 18:36Speaking of Roger Maris, Teeway, with a two runs batted in just now, he has a total of five runs batted in in the World Series.
- 18:45The Cardinals have nine runs. He's driven in five of them.
- 18:48In the car, it takes the first hit to curve ball inside. The in field is called in.
- 18:54We're only in the first inning here at first stadium. The Cardinals have already scored two runs.
- 18:58They haven't run around a third base. It's one away.
- 19:01And the big setter, Tim McHarver, is up there.
- 19:06Gary Bell wanting up for the wrist shot down in the bullpen.
- 19:10San Diego's pitch, bat ball, low and outside, ball two. The on deck hitter, Mike Shannon, who hit a home run yesterday.
- 19:21McHarver backs out of there, looks down at his post, Joe Shultz, at third base.
- 19:31Maris on its third. McHarver crouched over that play. Here comes the pitch.
- 19:38Bathe hit out into right field. Roger Merge stepping on home plate for their third run.
- 19:45McHarver making the cut at third base and back in there.
- 19:48And that is the fourth hit for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 19:57Three runs on four hits.
- 20:06Now let's see what happens.
- 20:09Maris got a base hit.
- 20:12To start this bottom half of the first inning off, Shultz then got a base hit.
- 20:19Maris holding on a second. Maris got a double out into left field, scoring both, Maris and Shultz.
- 20:27The first hit to Mike Shannon is a curve ball, low and outside.
- 20:31Sate hit a fly ball in the right field. Maris tagging up going to third.
- 20:36Then McHarver gets a single in the right, scoring Merge.
- 20:39And that brings up Mike Shannon, one ball and no strikes on him. It's still one away.
- 20:49The pitch for Shannon's front runner in this, strike one.
- 20:56And as serious, Shannon has four hits.
- 21:03One up for home run yesterday.
- 21:09San Diego looking down at his catcher, Elton Hire, waiting for the sign.
- 21:15Here is the pitch. Curve ball, front runner, mess, folded a little bit, one ball and two strikes.
- 21:21Gary Bell still warming up at the bullpen for the Red Sox.
- 21:27Again, those three runs for Gibson's pitching is going to be a little tough.
- 21:33Yes indeed, it's going to have to be a catch-up type of ball game from the Boston point of view.
- 21:41Shannon, very slowly bat of a curve ball, the shortstop, Petrocelli in foul territory comes up with it.
- 21:48A little lazy Luper out over third and holding on at first base, 10 McHarver.
- 21:54And you just mentioned a good point there, Ken.
- 21:57The Red Sox had to play a catch-up ball yesterday.
- 22:00That's a tough game to play. It looks to me like they're going to have to play it again today.
- 22:05Well, during the season when they had a 10-game winning streak, they had a similar situation to what the Cards have here today.
- 22:12They kept jumping out into quick lead.
- 22:16Now the Cardinals have that advantage in this one.
- 22:19Javier is the hitter.
- 22:21San Diego's first pitcher and the ground ball after the shortstop.
- 22:24He's got the ball and the lead is saved.
- 22:35That ball was hit hard into the hole.
- 22:40Petrocelli had to go over about seven-six.
- 22:45He got through the ball, had to cross over with his glove, knocked the ball down,
- 22:52but McHarver needs to throw the second base, so Javier gets the base hit.
- 22:56And that's the fifth hit.
- 23:01In this ball game, Runnison first and second.
- 23:04Dow Max will hit a curve ball low and outside, ball one.
- 23:08Javier, the only player to have five hits.
- 23:27Not the only player to have five hits, because Luke Brock has six hits.
- 23:32Has seven now. That's starting in the base game.
- 23:36Dow Max ball.
- 23:39Makes that 50-50 back ball, too.
- 23:42San Diego may be a little careful.
- 23:46Little shortstop here.
- 23:48Bob Gibson, the next hitter, the nice play-sitter, but he's not a bad hitter himself.
- 23:52Runners on first and second.
- 23:54San Diego.
- 23:56Look at it hard. There's the ball.
- 23:58It's a base hit out in the left field.
- 24:00Yosunski may make it cold.
- 24:01Here comes Petro. Elton Howard out in front.
- 24:04The base control, the carbidire.
- 24:07That's the first hit.
- 24:28When I wonder about Javier, Javier is the only cardinal
- 24:34to hit in every game, because Lombard
- 24:38only gave that one hit in that second game.
- 24:42And Javier had it.
- 24:46That cardinal
- 24:49has really come on strong here in this bottom half of the first inning.
- 24:54With a count of two balls and no strikes.
- 24:58On Dow Max ball.
- 25:01He's the last one out in the left field in Yosunski
- 25:05that we've talked so much about.
- 25:08He charges those ground balls in the great arm that he has.
- 25:11I thought he may have a good shot at McHarver coming in the home.
- 25:15But McHarver beats the throw.
- 25:18And Sal Magley, the Red Stocks pitching coach, has gone to the mound,
- 25:22and they are going to make a change now.
- 25:25As right-hander Gary Bell, who was the starting pitcher here yesterday,
- 25:31will come on to do the pitching for Boston.
- 25:35In yesterday's game, Gary worked two innings, and he allowed three runs and five hits.
- 25:41One of them a home run. He struck out one.
- 25:45And Jose Santiago in this first inning has pitched to eight men.
- 25:50Six of them have had base hits. Four of them have scores.
- 25:56So he worked after working just two-thirds of an inning, he believed,
- 26:00allowing six hits and four runs, no walks and no strikeouts.
- 26:05Bell has just finished a long walk-in from the bullpen
- 26:10and is talking now with Sal Magley and with Elston Howard.
- 26:16On the base hit, Maxville went down to second on the throw.
- 26:22So the Cardinals have runners at second and third, and nobody out, or two out rather,
- 26:28here in this first inning, as Bell now is starting his warm-up throws.
- 26:33Coleman with Pee Wee Reef at Bush Memorial Stadium in St. Louis
- 26:38with two men out in the last half of the first inning.
- 26:42And on the base hit, Gary Bell who has given a pitch to Bob Gibson
- 26:47with runners at second and third, and once again, here is Pee Wee Reef.
- 26:52Okay, Ken, at Bob Gibson, as we've said so many times, it's not a bad-hitting pitcher.
- 27:01Gary Bell looking down at Elston Howard and Elston Howard shaking that fist
- 27:07by saying, come on, we're still here.
- 27:10The first pitch, back ball low and inside.
- 27:15Bell started the game yesterday.
- 27:18He pitched two innings, he was a losing pitcher.
- 27:21He gave up three runs on five hits, struck out one, and did not walk anyone.
- 27:31They count right now and Gibson, one ball, no strikes.
- 27:34Bell taking a little time, Elston Howard.
- 27:36They can't get together on the side.
- 27:39They're trying to find up the pitch, a back ball in there for call strike one.
- 27:44In the final half of the first inning, the Red Sox fail to score.
- 27:48The Cardinals have four runs.
- 27:51They're still not out of the inning, two away.
- 27:55Runners on first and second.
- 27:57Javier on his third, Max Malone on his second.
- 28:00Here's the pitch.
- 28:02Popped up.
- 28:03Dexter Seller, the Sharks, going back.
- 28:05The Yankees call for it, the Mississippi calls for it, and Texas on out number three.
- 28:10So here's first day in the bottom half of the first inning.
- 28:13The Cardinals score, the Red Sox nothing.
- 28:17A cloudy, cool afternoon with a temperature now about 55 degrees.
- 28:22Here's T-Wing.
- 28:23Popped Gibson's first pitch to Reggie Smith, low and outside, ball one.
- 28:30Smith wants to take a look at the ball.
- 28:33Dexter Seller, the call to the doubt.
- 28:38Here's Jiminyuas.
- 28:40One ball, no strikes on Reggie Smith, leading things off for the Red Sox in the top half of the second inning.
- 28:46That pitch is outside, ball two.
- 28:49Gibson, when he releases that ball, he puts everything in.
- 28:57Paul's over-taught first base a little bit.
- 28:59Here comes the Winder, the pitch to Smith.
- 29:02The ball hit hard, but stays right the whole time.
- 29:05Just barely fouled in it by Sealy.
- 29:14Here's DeSeller.
- 29:18That's it, throwing around the left, back through the middle, you get it inside.
- 29:23You can hit it a long way.
- 29:26Here's the pitch to Gibson.
- 29:28He's out to Javier at second base, up with the ball, puts the ball over the capeta.
- 29:32It's all for Reggie Smith.
- 29:34Gibson will be tough today.
- 29:39Bob Gibson.
- 29:44A little fella, he's not a real big fella.
- 29:46He's six feet, one and a half inches tall, but he's well put together, 195 pounds.
- 29:55Basketball player, Gary A. there, first pitch time.
- 29:59Fouled off the right, back up in the stands, track one.
- 30:04She-We, there's a note on the scoreboard out here indicating that New Brock,
- 30:08four hits in the opening game, made him the sixth cardinal to do it.
- 30:12Others, Joe Medwick, Rip Collin, Dino Slaughter, Whitey Karowski, and Joe Gargiola.
- 30:19That is Joe Gargiola, Gibson.
- 30:24Glad to see you there.
- 30:26Well, you know, he did it in the World Series in Boston, and he said it was an amazing thing
- 30:30because it happened to be a day when Ted Williams did a couple of things pretty well,
- 30:35and he said he got very little publicity out of it, you know, as a result.
- 30:43Well, I knew Joe had done that, as glad he did.
- 30:45Gary A. there.
- 30:47Wings.
- 30:50No contact, one ball and two strikes on Jerry.
- 30:53Went to top half the second inning.
- 30:58Bob Gibson, pitch.
- 30:59There, there, curve ball.
- 31:01Hot looking right there.
- 31:02So it's two away.
- 31:07That's the second strike out by Bob Gibson.
- 31:12That brings up Rico Ketsuraseki.
- 31:19Gibson digging his way down from the carver to wind up the pitch.
- 31:23Curve ball and a dandy in there for 12-strike one.
- 31:28Gibson in Boston started out with the fastball.
- 31:32Today he's throwing a lot of curves.
- 31:36That ball just missed the outside corner, makes count of one ball and one strike.
- 31:41You see a pitcher do that quite often.
- 31:44Sometimes you start out throwing a lot of fastballs and throw curve balls a lot of part of the game.
- 31:49So breaking pitch outside.
- 31:51All two and strike one.
- 31:54The next game, start out with curve balls and switch to fastballs.
- 32:01This fellow can do it.
- 32:02A good fastball, spun on it, foul straight back, two and two.
- 32:11The fourth game of the World Series here at Boots Stadium.
- 32:17And the Cardinals are out in front by a score of four to nothing.
- 32:20The fifth one will be played right here tomorrow.
- 32:25Bounce straight back and the count remains two and two.
- 32:29It's two away.
- 32:33Metzorcelli has good power for little fellas, hits 17 home runs during the Red Bulls season.
- 32:44Defensively for the Cardinals, Cepeda at first base, Javier at second,
- 32:49Maxwell at short, Shannon at third, Blackfield, Brock, Centerfield, Fletch,
- 32:54Wrightfield, Mares, McHarver, Ketching, and the pitcher, Bob Gibson.
- 32:59He shakes his guard, didn't want that one.
- 33:01He wants this one.
- 33:02And up the pitch, curve ball.
- 33:04Kind of fought it off, Metzorcelli did.
- 33:06Hitted off the right, Cepeda going over near the stand.
- 33:09Way back up in there.
- 33:13Two and two.
- 33:14Metzorcelli had a great deal of trouble with Gibson in the first game in Boston.
- 33:19He struck out three times, all swinging, and then finally was lifted for a pinch hitter,
- 33:24which is something that doesn't very often happen.
- 33:26But he had a lot of trouble with Bob's motion.
- 33:29At least today he's getting on that ball a little bit.
- 33:33That turned two-pitch to Cepeda.
- 33:36Curve ball, pulled in, started Becky swinging one around, and that's all.
- 33:40But the Red Sox hit a top half with second and eighth.
- 33:43The score, after one and a half and even points to the Cardinals, four of the Red Sox, nothing.
- 33:48Come on, that started the game off, Lou Brock.
- 33:50Here he is again.
- 33:51As Ken told you, nine men batted in that first inning.
- 33:55Gary Bell, first good time on outside ball one.
- 34:01Cardinals have been serious players.
- 34:03They have been in hand.
- 34:04They've won seven.
- 34:07By the end of those sevenths, they won.
- 34:10Went to seven games.
- 34:12They didn't lose a one-up.
- 34:17The pitch, Brock, it pops up out into left field.
- 34:20It's empty underneath it.
- 34:22Kathy's good.
- 34:25Take it for out number one.
- 34:27As we've said so many times during this series, you have to keep that Brock off of those bases.
- 34:34Once he gets on, everything starts to happen.
- 34:40He accepts the pitchers.
- 34:42In the field, Kathy.
- 34:45He really moves.
- 34:47Kirk Blur is headed with one away.
- 34:49Gary Bell, first pitch during.
- 34:51He punched one.
- 34:52It tries to butt one thousand straight back.
- 34:57Blur at 30.
- 34:58Dalton Jones back a little bit.
- 35:00Third base.
- 35:02One strike on him, essentially for the Red Sox in the infield.
- 35:05Shot at first base.
- 35:07Second base.
- 35:08Jerry Adair at shortstop.
- 35:10Petro Sellez.
- 35:11Third base.
- 35:12Dalton Jones.
- 35:14One strike on Kirk Blur.
- 35:16Gary Bell on the one.
- 35:17Appears the pitch.
- 35:18It's high and inside.
- 35:20One strike.
- 35:23Kirk Blur at a real good second place hitter.
- 35:26He can really handle that bat.
- 35:29Not only can he move the ball around, he hits over 330 during this season.
- 35:34The fastball inside ball two.
- 35:38The Cardinals have four runs on six hits.
- 35:41Red Sox, no runs on one hit.
- 35:47The temperature here at Bush Stadium, about 54 degrees.
- 35:53It's an overcast day.
- 35:56Braddock Schiller.
- 35:57Here's the pitch.
- 35:58Blur.
- 35:59Popped it up.
- 36:00George Scott, the first baseman underneath it and takes it for out number two.
- 36:06So Gary Bell.
- 36:11Finding things a little bit easier than Santiago did who started this game.
- 36:16Santiago, pitch two-thirds of an inning, gave up four runs on six hits.
- 36:23Roger Mares, who's had a good series, the batter, he's doubled in the first thing,
- 36:30driving in two runs.
- 36:31There's a fastball with that side of the gas.
- 36:35Remember, fans, Ken Coleman and I will be right back here again tomorrow to bring you the
- 36:40fifth game of this World Series.
- 36:42Hope you can be with us.
- 36:44Bell's picked a Mares curveball in there for Saltzite 1.
- 36:49Mares now has four for 12.
- 36:52Five runs batted in.
- 36:57Mares, a big left-handed hitter.
- 37:01Gary Bell's pitch to him.
- 37:03A lot of pitches high and outside, ball two.
- 37:08He's trying to keep the ball away from Mares.
- 37:11Get it in, Travis.
- 37:15He can pull it out of here, out of any ballpark.
- 37:20He keeps moving that back.
- 37:21Now he's set.
- 37:22Gary Bell's pitch to him.
- 37:23Back crawl.
- 37:25Danded a little bit.
- 37:26Pitch to him for the closest first base.
- 37:28Gets a nice hand as he comes up to the ball.
- 37:31Two balls, two strikes.
- 37:36On Roger Mares.
- 37:44Ken, I believe Bell was a little bit better today than he did yesterday.
- 37:47Yes, he does.
- 37:48And oddly enough, our second pitcher yesterday was Lucy was the best one.
- 37:52It seems to be a matter of timing involved here.
- 37:55Taking her own pitcher.
- 37:58It's her turn there.
- 38:00The ground is George Scott who's taking him himself.
- 38:02He's throwing tips on the base and that's all for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of the second inning.
- 38:07The score here, the Cardinals four and the Red Sox nothing.
- 38:12But the Red Sox, Elton Howard the first pitch to him.
- 38:15He takes it in there for a call strike one.
- 38:17Well, as we mentioned, the Red Sox now have to play catch up and with Gary Bell due next, Joe Poy is on deck.
- 38:26Elton Howard pops one up, the fade in fouls head toward down his first base line, takes it for out number one.
- 38:41Joe Poy.
- 38:45Ten-fifty on the pitcher.
- 38:49Gary Bell.
- 38:51Gets the first pitch to him. Her ball in there for call strike one.
- 38:59Well, that's what happened as Ken and I have said.
- 39:02Here's the pitch to Joe Poy.
- 39:04Come on and miss strike two.
- 39:06When you're playing catch up baseball, even though Gary Bell has looked real short, you've got to use your pinditors.
- 39:13Try to get back in this game.
- 39:16As the Red Sox fail, four to nothing.
- 39:19The 0-2 pitch to Poy.
- 39:22And it didn't take long for Gibson to get a bit of four.
- 39:25A real good fast ball and a runner and this is it for out number two.
- 39:31I don't believe Ken, I've ever seen a pitcher work this fast as Bob Gibson does.
- 39:36He really works fast both ways.
- 39:41In throwing the ball and in working.
- 39:46Jose Tardibor, a little right fielder.
- 39:48Here is the pitch.
- 39:50Tardibor looking at it like he won the buttock.
- 39:53Makes it for strike one.
- 40:01Tardibor does not have a hit in the series.
- 40:06Her ball outside, call one.
- 40:11When the top half is over, it's quick to get him inside Lord.
- 40:16Cardinal four, the Red Sox nothing.
- 40:20Swing and miss, strike two.
- 40:22One ball and two strikes on Tardibor.
- 40:24It's two away.
- 40:27Bob Gibson, he doesn't give that hitter a chance to think.
- 40:34One ball and two strikes.
- 40:35Here is the pitch.
- 40:36Her ball hit out to Sepada.
- 40:38The first face says I'll take it myself.
- 40:41And that's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of third inning.
- 40:45So after one and a half innings of play, it's still the Cardinal four and the Red Sox nothing after third inning.
- 40:52The new pitcher, Jerry Stevenson, first pitch is in there for call strike one.
- 40:57Sepada.
- 41:01It'll fly out into right field to Tardibor his last time up.
- 41:06There's that one third on it.
- 41:09There's a big hit out of the left field.
- 41:11And after extra bases, you're dirty, takes the ball off the wall.
- 41:15Here comes a long pull.
- 41:16Sepada in the second base with a stand-up double.
- 41:26Well, Ken, a lot of the players on the Cardinal said that little face hit, or not a little face hit,
- 41:31that two-face hit, Sepada got his last time up.
- 41:33Yes, he may be just what the doctor ordered.
- 41:37Elvando had been in a slump through most of September and had a lot of trouble getting base hits in this World Series.
- 41:44He'd gone 0 for 10 until he got that double yesterday.
- 41:47And now he bangs out his second double off the World Series, getting his second hit.
- 41:52He's 1 for 2 today as Tim McCarver now faces Jerry Stevenson.
- 41:59Tim McCarver will try to get this ball on the right side of the infield.
- 42:03It gets to Sepada over the third.
- 42:05And now here's the pitch.
- 42:08Her ball, good dribble, foul, hits it back against the street.
- 42:18Ken's talking about Sepada at that late season slump with only 1-61.
- 42:28Last 19 games, 10 for 62.
- 42:33He just quit after he sent Sepada back in again.
- 42:36Well, he helped him pinch it.
- 42:38He was a great player for the Cardinals all season long.
- 42:41He did.
- 42:42McCarver takes the back ball just inside.
- 42:46One ball and one strike.
- 42:48Yes, sir, that thick fellow down at second base, they call him the Bull.
- 42:55He certainly did have a great year.
- 43:00As we say, he is the leader for the Cardinals.
- 43:04Jerry Stevenson's pitch to McCarver.
- 43:06He did put it foul down that right field line.
- 43:11The count is now one ball and two strikes on McCarver.
- 43:14So in the bottom half of third inning, the Red Sox have no runs on one hit.
- 43:19Off to Bob Gibson, the Cardinals have four runs and seven hits.
- 43:26The Cardinals have four runs came off San Diego in the first inning.
- 43:33As he pitched two-thirds of an inning, Jerry Stevenson shakes his head to Elton Hardee's ready.
- 43:42McCarver fouls one off the net, no chance by Howard R. Dalton Jones, and a gap remains one ball and two strikes.
- 43:53McCarver just about straight away.
- 43:57Yudzinski, in fact, he's a little bit more towards the left field line.
- 44:06McCarver hits the ball out of the left field, especially with two strikes on it.
- 44:12One and two hits to McCarver.
- 44:14Boucher back in front of the plate, Elton Hardee cannot come up with it, and there goes the player to third.
- 44:22A wild pitch by Jerry Stevenson.
- 44:37His Cardinal ball first and move on those base backs.
- 44:44Of course, they've had a lot of opportunities today.
- 44:46They've had a lot of man on.
- 44:48Red Sox have not had a chance.
- 44:52The infield has drawn them in a count of two balls and two strikes on McCarver.
- 44:56There's no one out.
- 44:58Here is the hit to McCarver with the player to third is a high five on that two-center field.
- 45:03Regis Chris, who has a good arm, he's going to lead the ball.
- 45:05Here comes the throw, and they cannot be able to get McCarver.
- 45:09The throw is off to the right.
- 45:10Elton Hardee up with the ball.
- 45:12He throws the ball to Jones.
- 45:14At third, I thought that maybe going over to tag third on the infield play, but McCarver had plenty of time.
- 45:22It was going to use rushing.
- 45:31They had plenty of time down at third, so that ball was pretty steep.
- 45:36Not to Regis, and Mike Shannon is now the hitter.
- 45:40It's one away.
- 45:42McCarver is now leading five and other.
- 45:49One and ohs a count on Mike Shannon.
- 45:55Shannon played right field in the 1964 World Series.
- 45:58That ball, oh, ball two.
- 46:10Two balls, no strikes on Mike Shannon.
- 46:12Jerry Stevenson taking a little time.
- 46:14Elton Hardee getting his time.
- 46:15Everyone up, Stevenson.
- 46:17That ball, low and out, try.
- 46:18Ball three.
- 46:19Shannon checks with Joe Short, the coach at third base.
- 46:26And the Cardinals have completely dominated this game so far.
- 46:34Bob Gibson has given up one hit, and the Cardinals have scored five runs.
- 46:39That's three and ohs a hit.
- 46:41Shannon taking all the ways right down in there for called strike one.
- 46:51Shannon has four for ten in the series.
- 46:54Right down on the end of that bat.
- 46:55Elton Hardee giving his time.
- 46:57Jerry Stevenson in the windup.
- 46:59Here's the pitch.
- 47:01That ball off the right back of the stand.
- 47:15Short shot at first base.
- 47:16Jerry Adair at second.
- 47:17That's Joe Selle at shortstop.
- 47:19John Jones at third.
- 47:22Jerry Stevenson, the third pitcher for the Red Sox.
- 47:27San Diego, Gary Barrow, and now Jerry.
- 47:30Here's the three and two.
- 47:32That's ball right inside, ball four.
- 47:41That'll bring up Hoolie Javier.
- 47:48That's a face that is last time up to the shortstop.
- 47:51That's a teller who had to go in the hole, knocked the ball down, could not throw anyone out.
- 47:57Javier has had a face hit in every game.
- 48:00He got the only hit off, Big Jim Lombard.
- 48:04Lombard kicked that fourth hitter up in the parking.
- 48:09Johnatelli calling time.
- 48:12The umpire behind home plate is Javier.
- 48:16Take these glasses off.
- 48:19Clean them.
- 48:20Run away.
- 48:23They like to hit and run.
- 48:25That's Javier on his first base.
- 48:27Jerry Stevenson, left one over to Doris Scott.
- 48:34We'll keep it there on Shannon.
- 48:38Jerry Stevenson, check the runner at first.
- 48:40Here's the pitch.
- 48:41That's ball.
- 48:42Lower it outside, ball one.
- 48:49Javier looking for a time.
- 48:56The right fielder, Carter Ball, not too deep.
- 49:00But he knows if Javier does get the run, he'll try to put it into right field.
- 49:06There's the ball.
- 49:07Hit by the fast, the third ball out of the left field.
- 49:09You can't see.
- 49:10Over to Cutter Ball off.
- 49:11I can and well ensured.
- 49:13Here it comes in the short.
- 49:15It's going to third.
- 49:16It's on home and Javier is checking with his standup brother.
- 49:32Javier, line one over the bag, pass Dalton Jones out of the left field.
- 49:40And Mike Shannon, throwing all the way to first base.
- 49:47As you're certainly not trapped at ball rack, left field is good.
- 49:52Kind of a funny bounce out there.
- 49:54The county got to it.
- 49:55Mike Shannon throwing in first.
- 49:57So it has Javier down his second.
- 50:00Just one away.
- 50:01The store, Cardinal Smith, the red track's nothing.
- 50:04Now Maxwell the batter.
- 50:08And there's the ball right there for Carl Drake Ward.
- 50:11Javier now has six for twelve.
- 50:17Maxwell better base at his last cover.
- 50:23Bottom half of third is Jerry Stevenson, hit to Maxwell.
- 50:26Curve ball.
- 50:28Moving over the track two.
- 50:30And now Pee Wee down in the Boston Boat and Dave Moorehead has started loosening up.
- 50:37We've seen three pitchers for the red track.
- 50:42And now fourth is warming up.
- 50:45Two strikes on Maxwell.
- 50:47A little grounder out to start that pepper silly up in the ball over to George Scott to retire Maxwell.
- 50:52Moving over to third is Javier.
- 50:56And we must say one of the pitchers looks real sharp at a very low.
- 51:15Bob Gibson's ahead of a two away.
- 51:18Leonard third.
- 51:20Javier.
- 51:23And now for Jerry Stevenson, now a safe backstack one.
- 51:26The Cardinals scored four big runs in the first inning and they have scored two in the bottom half of third inning for their sixth run.
- 51:33They have six runs on eight hits.
- 51:36That's right, made an error.
- 51:38And the red tracks, no runs on one hit.
- 51:41They have not made an error.
- 51:43Look out, Bob.
- 51:49Here's the man that's going to say something about it.
- 51:54I don't believe that man anything.
- 51:58One ball and one strike on Bob's two away.
- 52:02Stevenson shakes his head because he's ready.
- 52:04Here's the pitch.
- 52:06It pops up out into center field, Reggie Smith underneath him and takes it in as it for the last out.
- 52:14So that's all for the Cardinals here in the bottom half of third inning.
- 52:17They came up with two runs, but they're still after three full innings, but they're going to have to call strike one.
- 52:25Dalton Jones, first time up.
- 52:29One back two.
- 52:30A big picture Bob Gibson.
- 52:33One strike on Dalton Jones.
- 52:35A wind up the pitch.
- 52:37A foul, safe back on the count of two strikes.
- 52:45Last year in the World Series, if you remember correctly, Baltimore Oil and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 52:52The Orioles won it in fourth place.
- 52:55That ball inside, ball one.
- 52:58One ball and two strikes.
- 53:03The National League trying to win it this year.
- 53:08They lead two games to one.
- 53:10Turn ball.
- 53:12Dalton Jones just got a piece of it, kept him alive.
- 53:15One ball and two strikes.
- 53:23A real good looking left hander hitter right here at Dalton Jones.
- 53:28Hard man to strike out.
- 53:30Here's a man that does it quite often, Bob Gibson.
- 53:34Right down into his pitch.
- 53:36Gibson takes the ball up down until he wants to take a look at it.
- 53:43That one has a hurt peewee.
- 53:45Usually if it hits the ball his foot in the park it stays there, but the way Gibson pulls with that velocity and the way Jones cuts the ball, that one almost out to the mound.
- 53:57I can hear the players on the pitch now, walking like a dog over there.
- 54:04One ball, two strikes on Dalton Jones.
- 54:07Ball hit hard out in his first baseline.
- 54:10The Cavaliers one ball and two strikes.
- 54:14Now the CMEU fans tune in a little bit late.
- 54:18The Cardinals got off their running start the first inning.
- 54:22They came up with four big runs.
- 54:25Two more in the third.
- 54:28They lead this ball game 6 to nothing.
- 54:30We're in the top hat for fourth inning.
- 54:32Dalton Jones pops it up out into short left field.
- 54:36Luke Rock comes in, calls hard and takes it.
- 54:40Out number one.
- 54:47It's one of way to bring up Carl D'Espenza.
- 54:50He's one for one with it.
- 54:58Either they say or just simply go.
- 55:03Don't go no that side.
- 55:06Gibson, looking down at the carpet.
- 55:09Here's the pitch to Carl.
- 55:10That's Carl.
- 55:11It's outside.
- 55:12Ball one.
- 55:17Here's the fellow that swings hard on every pitch.
- 55:20He really comes through.
- 55:22Gibson's got him almost not ready there.
- 55:24You have to keep watching this man.
- 55:27He gets set to bring this ball in a hurry.
- 55:30One ball and one strike on Carl D'Espenza here.
- 55:33The top hat to fourth inning, one away.
- 55:38He has two whole runs.
- 55:41In that second game up the 10-way park, there's a fastball.
- 55:44He has a call strike two, one ball and two strikes.
- 55:48Trying to keep the ball away from D'Espenza.
- 55:53Gibson comes over the rack.
- 55:58Here's Trimke, but that's closed fast.
- 56:00Here's the pitch.
- 56:01Fastball on outside, ball two.
- 56:07Here's Trimke in the last two games of the season.
- 56:12He has seven hits and eight times his bat against the Minnesota Twins.
- 56:17Here's the pitch to Trimke.
- 56:18The fastball outside, he fouls it off the left.
- 56:29He has 27 home runs at 10-way park this year.
- 56:36He has 44 all together, 15 on the road.
- 56:42Two ball, two strikes.
- 56:43Bob Gibson, here's the pitch.
- 56:45Little tap right back to Gibson.
- 56:48No trouble with the touch of all of the sabbatas.
- 56:51Trimke huckled down that first base line.
- 56:54Gibson and a couple of infielders started in right over three outs.
- 56:59As they say, we're playing the old rule.
- 57:02Three outs, good inning.
- 57:08George Scott, let's see what he's done today.
- 57:15George Scott, bat it out for the second base.
- 57:18He's done the first 15,000 bat strike one.
- 57:26George Scott struck out in the first inning.
- 57:31Air ball in there by Paul Strike two.
- 57:35Here's the thing about Gibson, what's on shot with two strikes, no balls on him right now.
- 57:41Here's the windup.
- 57:43He's got on curveball way outside.
- 57:46That's the first bat on pitch that's been in throw all day.
- 57:51Now there's one ball and two strikes.
- 57:58George Scott pumping that bat.
- 58:00Here's the goal.
- 58:01He's got it out.
- 58:06John Kelly said the ball hit his ass in the car and starts over with a dugout.
- 58:08Johnny Kelly's just come back here.
- 58:10He didn't get the ball to fly.
- 58:16George Scott just gets the piece of it, keeps him alive.
- 58:20One ball and two strikes.
- 58:24And the windup, the pick, curveball, ground ball, shot stop, out of the left field.
- 58:31Rocked up with the ball.
- 58:32He troubles the ball a moment till he's got to make the big turn back in there though.
- 58:38So Scott after striking out, 15,000 bat, he's won for two today.
- 58:48This round after the second base in his first time up.
- 58:52The amazing thing to me about Todd Gibson is his control.
- 58:55He went into the ninth inning of the first game before he walked anybody.
- 58:59That game was two outs as I recall and today he hasn't come close to walking anybody again.
- 59:06Unusual for such a hard thrower.
- 59:09That ball inside, ball one.
- 59:12That's true, Ken.
- 59:13You'd think as much effort as this fellow puts into the ball.
- 59:18If he had all these throws it would be a little bit wilder.
- 59:22Real good control.
- 59:23One ball, low crack.
- 59:24It's empty.
- 59:25Take the pick, it's two low balls too.
- 59:28Once we have a fellow over here on our right.
- 59:31That's true, pretty hard.
- 59:32Co-facts it.
- 59:33I'd say there's better, better control.
- 59:37Has any picture ever had?
- 59:40Yes, indeed.
- 59:42But I saw him when he first started out too.
- 59:44He was a little bit wild.
- 59:47He was hard.
- 59:51He became a control picker.
- 59:54One of the best.
- 59:58Yatshivsky with two and old counts.
- 1:00:02Reggie Smith with the ball to Zapata.
- 1:00:04First base, big over steps on the bank and that's all for Reggie Smith.
- 1:00:08And that's all for the Red Sox here.
- 1:00:09The top half's a fourth inning.
- 1:00:11That's a three and a half innings of play until the cargo six and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:00:16Pee-wee race.
- 1:00:19Okay, kids.
- 1:00:21At the bottom half, the fourth inning, Lou Brock.
- 1:00:26That first pitch, Paul Hidhauer on the right side, that's going to be an after-hectic base.
- 1:00:30If you'll have to hear to get this one back in.
- 1:00:33Reggie Smith, he's holding the ball up in the air and the umpire is saying that the fan cuts the ball.
- 1:00:40So it's an automatic down-move double.
- 1:00:43It would have been an easy triple, Pee-wee, and maybe even more than that.
- 1:00:47He might have even had a shot at an inside-the-park home run.
- 1:00:51But a fan out there reached down and touched the ball.
- 1:00:54As Ron Ruhl states, if that happens, it's a two-base hit.
- 1:00:58So Lou Brock, who is all the way to third base, that might have challenged by trying for an inside-the-park home run, goes back to second.
- 1:01:09That ball took a real high hop. That fence is how high it can?
- 1:01:15Ten and a half feet high.
- 1:01:18Just we don't know how tall the fan was to reach down to touch.
- 1:01:22Don't know how long his arms were.
- 1:01:25And he touched it, we could see it, and of course the umpire was right out there on top of it.
- 1:01:30And he saw it, Reggie Smith, and he kind of told the ball, and he held the ball up in the air.
- 1:01:34Jerry Smith, the third plug. Like he wanted to punch that ball, punch the ball out of first base, and he took it outside of the ball wide.
- 1:01:46The third plug, he's one for two.
- 1:01:50That is bring on that big third inning.
- 1:01:53Lou Brock, down at second base.
- 1:01:56Let's see if he tries to lift that ball to right field.
- 1:01:59After one stop, he's got the goal at facility shortstop.
- 1:02:04It's back up in that air.
- 1:02:06Jerry Smith gets off the rubber, Elton Howard out to talk to Jerry Smith.
- 1:02:12Brock is now eight foot fifteen in this series.
- 1:02:15And of course, when he gets on base, he unsettles the pitcher and the catcher.
- 1:02:20When he gets on second, he's getting up through the whole infield because the second baseman and the shortstop are constantly on the move,
- 1:02:27trying to keep them as close to the bag as possible.
- 1:02:30And they there are better selling at both than weaving in behind him.
- 1:02:37He just takes a couple of steps away from those infielders.
- 1:02:40First body hits the ball to right field on the ground.
- 1:02:42During either up or in second base, he puts the ball over to George Schade.
- 1:02:46He gets the job done.
- 1:02:48He gets Lou Brock over to third.
- 1:02:53So it's one away at five balls, what now is four, Brock from third, a little bit more in second.
- 1:03:02And it's remarkable, the end of the summer, hitting in that second spot, so it's three-foot in getting the chopper up on a plate just like that.
- 1:03:11Yes, certainly is a tribute to the team play at third class.
- 1:03:18Roger Maher, line one, well done at first base line.
- 1:03:25He's one of the two. He had a couple.
- 1:03:29That's first time up driving in three-bounds.
- 1:03:34George Schade always says it was a team effort.
- 1:03:39I think in the case of the Cardinals here, it's really true.
- 1:03:47Boys can really communicate with each other.
- 1:03:50What's that second break, second base combination?
- 1:03:53Javier and Mackrell.
- 1:03:57Here comes Roger Maher.
- 1:04:00Take the pick inside.
- 1:04:02All one, one ball and one strike.
- 1:04:03Jerry Stevenson, serving.
- 1:04:07What do you think about that double play combination?
- 1:04:10Austin Redstock, never handy.
- 1:04:12And Kepa Shelley, in charge, there with the.
- 1:04:15A young fellow named Mike Gabb, who's been played a lot of second base for the Reds.
- 1:04:20Very good.
- 1:04:21Jerry Stevenson, hit to Roger Maher.
- 1:04:23One ball, three strikes on Roger Maher.
- 1:04:29At the end, three was good.
- 1:04:31We're in the bottom half.
- 1:04:35Four innings, and the Cardinals lead in this game by a sore, a prick, tenon.
- 1:04:42Here's the pick right there, hatball on inside, ball two.
- 1:04:53Stevenson is not taking his line up.
- 1:04:57He's watching Brock at third.
- 1:04:59He comes in, looks forward Brock.
- 1:05:01Here's the pick, curveball inside.
- 1:05:04Elton Howard makes a nice save.
- 1:05:06Makes the job three and two.
- 1:05:07The next hitter, Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:05:12He got a double his last time up.
- 1:05:17Three and two, the count on Roger.
- 1:05:22The Cardinals have nine hits.
- 1:05:24The Reds are set two.
- 1:05:28Jerry Stevenson taking a little time.
- 1:05:29He checks Brock over third.
- 1:05:31The tapper, George Scott, looks Brock back.
- 1:05:34He runs right at Brad De Maher.
- 1:05:37De Maher's going right back to home.
- 1:05:39But Scott Peggy, with a high hopper, and George Scott at first base, he wanted to make sure to drop him.
- 1:05:47He's watching all the way and now he's going right back to home with Scott Peggy.
- 1:05:51Scott has great instinct at first base and very often during the year with men at third, he would make that play even from a distance.
- 1:06:00That time, of course, Brock was not going and he had a chance to run in and get Roger Maher through a huge set three.
- 1:06:07He was retreating toward home plate.
- 1:06:09Now Cepeda.
- 1:06:12Cepeda.
- 1:06:14Had a double to left.
- 1:06:15He's lined down up.
- 1:06:16Jerry Stevenson takes a little bit too much time for him to step out of there.
- 1:06:19He'll move Brock down at third base.
- 1:06:22The two away.
- 1:06:26Jerry Stevenson watching Brock.
- 1:06:28He's in his line at fifth time.
- 1:06:30The curveball going outside for one.
- 1:06:34Brock had 52 strokes of advantage on the year.
- 1:06:42He was the first game of the Corker.
- 1:06:49He was the first call hit out to Jocelyn Jones by Cepeda over to George Scott.
- 1:06:54And that's all for Cepeda.
- 1:06:55That's all for the Corker there.
- 1:06:57And a lot of half the fourths.
- 1:06:59That's the full inning to play.
- 1:07:01It still requires those picks and the left top.
- 1:07:05If you've never played in the World Series, you've been up full for a number of years.
- 1:07:09And a lot of nows.
- 1:07:10He's been a pleasure working with him.
- 1:07:12Come on in.
- 1:07:13Kenny Coney Coleman.
- 1:07:14Thank you very much, Pee-wee.
- 1:07:15Jerry A. Deer ready to lead off in the fifth inning.
- 1:07:18And the first pitch from Gibson is taking ball for ball one.
- 1:07:22Deer in the second inning was called out on strikes.
- 1:07:24He'll be followed by Pepper Sully and then Howard is due up third.
- 1:07:28The outfield playing is set toward right.
- 1:07:30Gibson into the windup then.
- 1:07:32The veteran right-hander throws.
- 1:07:33The pitch is bowled back.
- 1:07:35And the count is one ball and one strike.
- 1:07:38Deer hits 292 in his 89 games with Launcourt this year.
- 1:07:46The Cardinals jumped out with four runs in the first and got two in the third.
- 1:07:51They lead six to nothing.
- 1:07:53Two pitches, one on a miss, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:07:58Gibson has struck out four and has not walked anybody.
- 1:08:01He has given up singles to Yatskensky and Scott.
- 1:08:04He has been in charge.
- 1:08:06The right-hander fires.
- 1:08:07Ground ball, hits down to third.
- 1:08:09Near the line, Shannon up with it.
- 1:08:11Throws to Cepeda for the out.
- 1:08:13A. Deer is out on a ground ball.
- 1:08:15Shannon getting him at the first base.
- 1:08:18With one down on the fifth, then the Cardinals, they hit six to nothing.
- 1:08:22Rico Petricelli is up.
- 1:08:31Right-handed batting shortstop.
- 1:08:32The pitch to M.I. Pop Powell off the third base side will be out of play.
- 1:08:37Amazing thing about Bob Gibson since returning to action on the 7th of September after his July 15th injury.
- 1:08:45He pitched six times, including serious games, with a four-and-one record.
- 1:08:50And his earned run average has been an incredible 0.97.
- 1:08:54Pitch is a curveball inside.
- 1:08:57The count on Petricelli goes to one ball, one strike.
- 1:09:03Most of the red sox hits by Yatskensky and Scott came after two were out.
- 1:09:08The pitch gets away from Gibson, the count is two balls, one strike.
- 1:09:13Bob seems to lose his balance coming off the mound.
- 1:09:18Two and one on Rico.
- 1:09:24Cardinal off field playing straight away for the Boston shortstop.
- 1:09:27McCarver hangs out the side.
- 1:09:29Gibson throws and the pitch is hit on one off the third.
- 1:09:32Shannon with it.
- 1:09:33On to Cepeda.
- 1:09:34Low throw, two-stop, nice play by the first base.
- 1:09:38And there are two men out on the fifth inning.
- 1:09:41Cardinals leading six to nothing.
- 1:09:43And Elton Howard is at the play.
- 1:09:52McCarndom off field for Howard plays a bit to the right.
- 1:09:56Bobby Doerr coaching at first and Eddie Paposky over his third base for Boston.
- 1:10:01Gibson into the windup and the pitch.
- 1:10:04It is low and away, ball one.
- 1:10:06Bobby Doerr coaching at first base set a series record in 1946 for second base, 31-6.
- 1:10:16Here's the pitch.
- 1:10:17High fly ball into right center field, no trouble for Flood.
- 1:10:21Waiting for it, he makes the catch and the rest sucks and the fifth inning is down in order.
- 1:10:26No runs, no hits and nobody left on.
- 1:10:28After four and one half it's St. Louis six and Boston nothing.
- 1:10:33And I believe he'll be coming on to catch.
- 1:10:35Right now we've got 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:10:39The Red Sox had no runs on fifth.
- 1:10:43That made no errors.
- 1:10:45And the Cardinals had six runs on ninth hit.
- 1:10:49That made no errors.
- 1:10:50We have a new catcher.
- 1:10:55And a new catcher.
- 1:10:56Mike Brown is doing the catcher.
- 1:10:58And the catcher, Moorhead.
- 1:11:04And Moorhead has a real good overhand curve on him.
- 1:11:08Yes he does, see we took last year on the 19th of April when the Patriots played double header in Boston in a dirty car.
- 1:11:15And he got out to the Miners.
- 1:11:17But Dave in his major league career had a no hit game once.
- 1:11:21And had to fight his way back from obscurity this year after starting his season with Toronto.
- 1:11:27And has been back with the Boston ball club from about halfway on to this season.
- 1:11:33Macarver leads off and the pitch is an overhand fastball at the belt on the inside corner for a strike ball.
- 1:11:40When Moorhead is firing he can throw a very, very hard.
- 1:11:46Macarver, left-handed batter, backs off for a moment.
- 1:11:50Kim has single the right field for the fourth Cardinal run in the first inning.
- 1:11:54Had a sacrifice fly in the third to drive in their fifth rock there leading six-nothing.
- 1:11:59Pitch is a strike ball, two strikes done, Macarver.
- 1:12:04Shannon is on deck and Javier will be batting third.
- 1:12:11This is the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:12:14The Cardinals had four on the thirds and two on the thirds.
- 1:12:19Moorhead throws, fastball outside, the count is one and two.
- 1:12:23In the third, Brock led off with an infield hit.
- 1:12:26Rudd single the left, Maris hit a two-run double.
- 1:12:30Macarver banged a single to score Maris.
- 1:12:33And Maxfield called on Macarver for the fourth run.
- 1:12:37There's a ground foul off the first-base side.
- 1:12:40Field one and two on Macarver.
- 1:12:44Yachtfield plays the tackle with Patrick toward right.
- 1:12:52Mike Ryan working back to the plate.
- 1:12:55Pitch, big serve outside, two and two.
- 1:12:59The plate umpire, Augie Donatelli of the National League at first base,
- 1:13:03Ed Lungy of the American League at second, Paul Pyer of the National League,
- 1:13:08John Stevens of the American League at third.
- 1:13:12Moorhead delivers.
- 1:13:13Macarver fouls it back out of play.
- 1:13:16Umpiring down the right field line,
- 1:13:19Frank Umont of the American League down the left field line, Al Balik of the National League.
- 1:13:26The Cardinals were the two game, two game to one edge in the World Series
- 1:13:34and leading here six to nothing.
- 1:13:36The pitch, one on a miss, strike three as Moorhead came in with high hopes to get Macarver.
- 1:13:42And that is the first strikeout by Boston 15 today and Moorhead is the fourth hurler.
- 1:13:49Santiago went two-thirds of an inning, allowed six hits and four runs.
- 1:13:54Gary Bell went one on a third, allowed no hits, no runs.
- 1:13:57Jerry Stevenson went two innings, allowed three hits, two runs.
- 1:14:01The batter is Shannon.
- 1:14:03The pitch to a miss, one on a miss, strike one.
- 1:14:09The team that is hitting third base from his foul to Becquertelli and Watt
- 1:14:14hit the curve ball on the ground to second.
- 1:14:16Easy hop for Adair, throws it to Scott for the up, two out on the fifth.
- 1:14:21Maylou is leading Boston by a score of six to nothing as Julian Javier steps to the plate.
- 1:14:28He has now six hits in 12 trips in series competition as he has two for two here today,
- 1:14:36an infield base hit in the first inning and a solid single to left field in the third.
- 1:14:43Mike Ryan hangs out his nine, Moorhead into action and a pitch, one on a miss, strike one.
- 1:14:52Two out and nobody on in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:14:56On deck is Dale Maxwell.
- 1:15:01The copy here calls time and now gets set in the right-hand batter's box.
- 1:15:06White blouch, the pitch to him hit on the ground foul, Joe Schultz, the third base coach handling it.
- 1:15:13Two tries to count.
- 1:15:25Dave Moorhead rubbing up the ball on the mound.
- 1:15:28Six runs on nine hits for St. Louis, no runs on two hits for Boston.
- 1:15:37Moorhead ready.
- 1:15:40Third ball gunning for ball strike three and he sends him down in order in the fifth inning, striking out two.
- 1:15:47No runs, no hits and nobody left on so after five St. Louis leads six to nothing.
- 1:15:56Ken Dome on an arm, Pee-wee Lee bringing it to the first inning in St. Louis.
- 1:16:01Going to the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:16:04Red Sox have no runs on two hits and the Cardinals have six runs on nine hits.
- 1:16:09Ken, come on in.
- 1:16:11Okay, Pee-wee, Mike Ryan at the plate, batting in the ninth spot in the batting order.
- 1:16:16John Foller from Haverhill, Massachusetts.
- 1:16:19The pitch to Mike is taking low ball one.
- 1:16:23Ryan will be followed by Tarnable and Jones as Moorhead took over Elton Howard's spot.
- 1:16:31Rob Gibson into the windup.
- 1:16:33The pitch, one on a miss.
- 1:16:36One ball and one strike.
- 1:16:43Ryan is a very fine defensive catcher for Boston.
- 1:16:47The pitch is foul-backed this way, one and two.
- 1:16:55Mike is a member of a well-known athletic family in the state of April.
- 1:17:04Pitch to him, he swings and the missers strike three.
- 1:17:07Looks like he's trying to hold back and couldn't.
- 1:17:10There's one out on the Boston six and Bob Gibson has struck out five men today.
- 1:17:25One out in the Boston sixth inning.
- 1:17:28St. Louis ahead, Sixton up and Tarnable at the plate.
- 1:17:31The pitch to Jose, like called, hits the outside corner.
- 1:17:36Gibson will be 32 years old on November the 9th.
- 1:17:41Struck out 10 red shots last Wednesday, which is a strike called.
- 1:17:48He is now allowed only one run in 14th inning.
- 1:17:58Gibson delivers inside and low.
- 1:18:00One ball, two strikes, it's Tarnable. One out in the Boston sixth.
- 1:18:11Pitch is foul-backed, one and two.
- 1:18:14In 14 innings against the Red Sox in this World Series,
- 1:18:17Gibson has allowed only one batter to get the third.
- 1:18:20He didn't even stop there.
- 1:18:21That was Santiago who hit a home run against him.
- 1:18:34Gibson winds and throws, Tarnable fouls it out of play,
- 1:18:37drifting into the lower deep soft third.
- 1:18:40One and two.
- 1:18:42Tomorrow Jim Longboard will be on the mound for Boston.
- 1:18:47Pitch the brilliant one-hit shutout in game two will be opposed by left-hander Steve Calder.
- 1:18:53The pitch, Tarnable throws one back up the middle,
- 1:18:56grabbed back a second by Javier, throw to first is not in time.
- 1:19:00It gets passed, the first-baseman's defeder, but no advance is made by Tarnable.
- 1:19:06So, Jose Tarnable is on, bouncing one back up the middle.
- 1:19:11Anyway, I'm not sure whether that ball hits the meat hand of Gibson or not,
- 1:19:17but in any case, Javier did very well to stop it back a second,
- 1:19:21and at least makes a throw on the first.
- 1:19:24I would say that Javier is impressed.
- 1:19:26We've seen him make two or three real good plays.
- 1:19:28Of course, he had no chance of throwing out Tarnable on that one,
- 1:19:30but if he can really move, that ball was almost to the left of second base.
- 1:19:35He can really move.
- 1:19:36One out and one aboard now, Dauvin Jones is the play.
- 1:19:40The pitch is a strike called on the outside corner, knee high.
- 1:19:44Jones bounceouts the pitcher in the first inning, slides the left field in the fourth.
- 1:19:52The hit by Tarnable was the third for Boston, all singles.
- 1:19:56Slide ball to left field, right toward Luke Rock.
- 1:19:59He can do a few steps and makes the catch.
- 1:20:01Tarnable down halfway, retreats to first base.
- 1:20:05Two men out in the sixth inning.
- 1:20:07In both other situations involving restock hits,
- 1:20:13they have done with two men out and nobody on.
- 1:20:16This time with one out and Tarnable got the base hit.
- 1:20:21Now there are two men out as Jastrowski comes up.
- 1:20:24Tau has singled the right field and bounced back to the pitcher.
- 1:20:29One for two.
- 1:20:32The pitch to him is outside for a ball.
- 1:20:39Jastrowski now four foot thirteen in the World Series.
- 1:20:45Tarnable with a six to nothing lead, we're in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:20:49Reset by Bob Gibson in the pitch.
- 1:20:52Right ball, breaking stuff on the inside corner, one and one.
- 1:21:04Gibson gets the time from Tim McCarver.
- 1:21:07Right hander goes to develop the pitch.
- 1:21:09Yes, doesn't get it, one and two.
- 1:21:13The crowd roaring at the rip that Jastrowski takes at that ball.
- 1:21:26Up in Boston sometimes they say he changes the wind direction with that cut.
- 1:21:32Gibson ready.
- 1:21:34One and two pitch, Jastrowski takes it low and inside, two and two.
- 1:21:46Two men out, Tarnable on first base in the Boston six.
- 1:21:49They glue it for the six to nothing lead.
- 1:21:58The pitch to Jastrowski, hit on the ground up the middle.
- 1:22:01Back at second, during the short drop, Maxfield throws the bat for the out,
- 1:22:06returning the side.
- 1:22:07Good play by Del Maxfield, back at the bag at second.
- 1:22:11No runs, one hit, one left on.
- 1:22:13So after five and one half, St. Louis leads six to nothing to card.
- 1:22:19Dave Moorehead throws to him, the pitch is inside, ball one.
- 1:22:23Maxfield has singled the left and grounded out the short stop.
- 1:22:28Right handed batter, Moorehead throws, ground ball, hits out at Jones,
- 1:22:31the third right of the bag, throws the top, flitty out, one away.
- 1:22:36Six to nothing, St. Louis, we're in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:22:40You know, Pee Wee, that overhand curve ball.
- 1:22:46Well, first let's say that the hand here is for Bob Gibson who has been brilliant again today.
- 1:22:52That overhand curve ball of Moorehead, I think when you and I were kids we used to call that a drop.
- 1:22:57And that's a pretty good one too.
- 1:23:00Gibson takes the ball outside.
- 1:23:03This is the first time I've ever had a chance to see Moorehead pitch.
- 1:23:06He comes right over the top.
- 1:23:10Pitch to Gibson is a check swing ground ball,
- 1:23:13followed by a six-finger in first base coach's box.
- 1:23:18One and one to guy.
- 1:23:21Here's a curve ball, a little bit like the color that I saw,
- 1:23:25but it's not used to pitch to the Dodgers.
- 1:23:28I mean, but Carl Irka, he came in over the top and it really rolls off.
- 1:23:32That ball is high and the count goes to two and one on Bob Gibson.
- 1:23:36Bob has flied to Yosvanski and left and to Smith in center field.
- 1:23:40Two and one.
- 1:23:45Moorehead kicks and throws, the pitch is low and away, three balls, one strike.
- 1:23:50One man out, nobody on, last of the sixth.
- 1:23:53The Dodgers get four in the first inning and two in the third.
- 1:23:57They beat six to nothing.
- 1:23:58Gibson fouls it back, three and two.
- 1:24:01Bob is a great natural athlete, once played with the Harlem Globetrotters
- 1:24:06and went to Creighton University in Omaha on a basketball scholarship.
- 1:24:11No wonder he can feel that position out there on the mound.
- 1:24:16Moorehead, three-two pitch to Gibson.
- 1:24:19He's outside and all he lost is.
- 1:24:22He's out because the card don't have a baselunner.
- 1:24:26That's the second walk allowed by Boston Fitches, the first by Moorehead.
- 1:24:31One out and one on and the batter is Drew Brogner.
- 1:24:34Today is two for three.
- 1:24:37He now has eight hits in the series more than any other player.
- 1:24:41Had an infield hit in the first inning and scored the first save that was run,
- 1:24:45flied to Yosvanski and left in the second, and doubled in the fourth,
- 1:24:50and on the non-rule double he might have had, would have had certainly three,
- 1:24:54but the ball was touched by a fan out there in the bleachers and right centers.
- 1:24:58Pitch hit on the ground to Petracelli.
- 1:25:00Flips over to Adair for one, back to first, face at first face.
- 1:25:05Brock is, you can well imagine, a very difficult man to double up,
- 1:25:11and they couldn't pull it off that time.
- 1:25:14As Gibson is four six to four, Petracelli to Adair and Brock reaches on the field of his choice.
- 1:25:22So there are two men out and a runner at first.
- 1:25:28Lew Brock has grounded into only 21 double plays in five years in the majors.
- 1:25:36Here is Fletcher.
- 1:25:39The fans want Brock to go.
- 1:25:41Moorehead's set.
- 1:25:42He's going to pitch, throw it out of second base, and he is safe.
- 1:25:48A close play, but safe for second base.
- 1:25:51Brock is stolen for the third time in the 1947 World Series.
- 1:25:56The pitch was a ball to Kurt Fluck.
- 1:26:03Yeah, he picked a real good pitch to Seelow.
- 1:26:05You and I have been talking about that overhand furball of Moorehead,
- 1:26:08and that's what the pitch he took off on.
- 1:26:10And of course that's a much better pitch to Seelow on that good pass ball.
- 1:26:14It takes a little bit longer for him to get up there.
- 1:26:16It didn't take long for Brock to get out of second.
- 1:26:20Well, he certainly gets off to a tremendous start.
- 1:26:23Mike Lyon has a good throwing time and has thrown out such men as Bert Campanaro
- 1:26:28over the American League.
- 1:26:30Among the greats, he's used the American League features.
- 1:26:34Here's the seven pitch.
- 1:26:36Mike crawled on the outside corner of the knees, the count is one-on-one.
- 1:26:41Flood, after getting a solid single to left in the first inning,
- 1:26:44pops up to stride at first base in the second rather than second base in the fourth.
- 1:26:52The pitch. Flood hits the ground ball to short.
- 1:26:55Petracelli in and up of it, throws the first base in time, and I get him.
- 1:26:59Flood is out, short to first, and in the sixth inning,
- 1:27:02there were no unnoticed and one man is left on.
- 1:27:06At the end of sixth, the Cardinals sixth and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:27:10Boston in the seventh, the Red Sox fail the Cardinals by a score of six to nothing.
- 1:27:16Scott, buck out in the first inning and single to left field in the fourth.
- 1:27:20Hits the ground ball on one option, actually, to short.
- 1:27:23Close is the Pater for the out. One down on the Boston seventh inning.
- 1:27:29Scott had more luck than anybody with Gibson and Boston.
- 1:27:33He had a pair of hits dropped off.
- 1:27:36And now Reggie Smith is coming up.
- 1:27:39Smith has rounded out to second and bounced out to the first base from Cepeda on a fifth.
- 1:27:52Jim McCobber catching.
- 1:27:54Cepeda at first, Javier at second, Maxville at shortstop, and Shannon at third.
- 1:27:58Rockets in left, flood in center, and Maritz in right.
- 1:28:03Smith getting set, foot hitting center fielder of the Red Sox up there left handed.
- 1:28:08Gibson, six and throws, low for a ball.
- 1:28:18Gibson allowed six hits in the opener in Boston.
- 1:28:22Pitch is low and inside, ball two.
- 1:28:31Two balls and no strikes to count.
- 1:28:38Smith gets it low, ball three.
- 1:28:41Gibson has a World Series record for a pitcher, most strikeouts in one series.
- 1:28:46He fanned 31 Yankees in 1964.
- 1:28:50The 3-0 pitch, Smith gets a walk.
- 1:28:54And that is the first walk that Gibson has given up today.
- 1:28:58Only the second he has given up in this World Series.
- 1:29:02In the first game he went to the ninth inning with two outs before he walked any further.
- 1:29:07One out and one on.
- 1:29:08The batter is Jerry Adair, the second baseman.
- 1:29:10And now down Maxville, the Cardinals shortstop,
- 1:29:13and Hopkins End wants to talk things over for a moment with Rock Gibson.
- 1:29:20We have some scores for you.
- 1:29:22Green Bay and Detroit are tied 10-10 at the end of the third quarter.
- 1:29:28Dallas and Washington 7-7 in the third period.
- 1:29:33DeWalland to New York 14 apiece at halftime.
- 1:29:37The pitch is ball one to Jerry Adair.
- 1:29:41Minnesota 14 St. Louis 3 in the second quarter.
- 1:29:51Adair hits a high pop foul off the first base side.
- 1:29:55Maccaba rovers, he's got it.
- 1:29:57The fader was close to him, but Kim made the grab.
- 1:30:01Adair bowels out to the catcher.
- 1:30:03Two men out, a runner at first base and a Boston 7.
- 1:30:06St. Louis with a 6-0 lead.
- 1:30:10Rico Petrucelli at the plate has been called out on strikes and grounded out the short.
- 1:30:18Tomorrow Jim Launborg goes against Steve Carlton.
- 1:30:26On deck for Boston, Steve Burns hits his foul back out of play.
- 1:30:32Strike one.
- 1:30:44One strike on Petrucelli, Reggie Smith on first base to pitch.
- 1:30:49One on and missed.
- 1:30:51Strike two.
- 1:30:55Moorehead was in the eighth spot in the batting order when he went into pitch, so he would be due next and Steve Burns is on deck.
- 1:31:05The set by Gibson and the pitch.
- 1:31:07Check swing foul ball off the first base side into the lower stand.
- 1:31:12Two strikes.
- 1:31:17Still cloudy, still cool here at Bush Memorial Stadium with a temperature in the mid-50s.
- 1:31:23It's supposed to be cloudy but maybe a little bit warmer tomorrow.
- 1:31:33Gibson ready to pitch.
- 1:31:36Check swing pop-up. Gibson makes the catch near the foul line off first.
- 1:31:41Halfway between first and home he went over like a cat to grab the ball.
- 1:31:46A nice play by the cardinal pitcher and that's all in the seven for Boston.
- 1:31:51No hits and one man left on.
- 1:31:54So after six and one half, St. Louis leads six to nothing involving Atlanta and Houston.
- 1:32:02One-two pitch, curve away, two and two.
- 1:32:06Catch and the brave credit, Denny LaMatcha left in his pitcher and a shortstop in his nakey to Houston for Sonny Jackson.
- 1:32:13A shortstop in the first base and they make Chuck Saxton.
- 1:32:16That's probably the first straight of the year.
- 1:32:18Yes, I would say. Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 1:32:26Morehead getting the mound for the front arm. It sticks to his likeness.
- 1:32:32One man out in the last of the seven.
- 1:32:34Cepeda hits a five-all into left-center field.
- 1:32:36Reggie Smith drifting to his right makes the catch for the outs.
- 1:32:40Two men out in the seven for St. Louis.
- 1:32:45The Cardinals are ahead by a score of six to nothing in a game that's been dominated by Cardinal right-hander Bob Gibson
- 1:32:54and early foot by the Cardinals at the plate.
- 1:32:57The batter is the catcher, Jim McArber.
- 1:33:00Left-handed hitter has singled a right and scored a run.
- 1:33:05It is sacrificed by and struck out.
- 1:33:07Takes a breaking ball over for a strike for all.
- 1:33:11McArber has driven in a pair of runs also, one on the first and one on the third.
- 1:33:23Dave Morehead throws outside for a ball one-on-one.
- 1:33:27Morehead is from San Diego, California.
- 1:33:35A right-hander who had quite a story in coming back to the Red Rocks this year after having a lame arm most of the past season and early this year.
- 1:33:44Pitch is inside, two balls, one strike.
- 1:33:55Pitch is inside for a ball three-and-one.
- 1:33:58In 1965, Morehead pitched a no-hit game against Cleveland on the 16th of September.
- 1:34:08The three-one delivery.
- 1:34:10High pop-up going into shallow up center field.
- 1:34:13Pepper Telle back, back, and he's got it to retire the side.
- 1:34:17In the seventh, no runs, no hits, and nobody left on.
- 1:34:20Seven innings to play, his table is six and Boston nothing. Job of pitching for Boston.
- 1:34:28Seaborn up there at the plate.
- 1:34:31Ryan is on deck and Chodable is due third.
- 1:34:37The Red Rocks have three singles in this ball game by Chodable, Yosemte, and Scott.
- 1:34:44Boston has struck out five and walked only one.
- 1:34:51Seaborn is a native of St. Louis as is Elton Howard of the Red Rocks and Dick Williams who lived here the first 13 years of his life.
- 1:35:04And of course, Norm White Howard is a veteran of World Series competition.
- 1:35:09In the third period, New Orleans 21, the New York Giants 20 in pro football, and Green Bay is leading Detroit 20-10 in the fourth period.
- 1:35:20Seaborn left-handed batter, Apeen Gibson.
- 1:35:23Pitch two in his lower ball one.
- 1:35:28Young 19-year-old Ken Brett is warming up on the Boston bullpen.
- 1:35:36He is outside ball two.
- 1:35:48Bob Gibson takes a deep breath on the mound, right-hander into action and the pitch.
- 1:35:52Seaborn gets a fastball in, first strike call, two and one.
- 1:36:05There's a high five all into center field and Kirk Flood is under it.
- 1:36:10He's got it for our number one.
- 1:36:12Seaborn flies to center.
- 1:36:14There's one out in the box tonight.
- 1:36:17And the batter is Mike Lyon who came up in the sixth inning after going into the game with Moorhead as a new batter and Mike struck out in the sixth.
- 1:36:28Pitch is foul back strike one.
- 1:36:42The outfield plays this right-handed batter a bit toward right field.
- 1:36:54Gibson throws a curve in, first strike call, two strikes on of Mike Lyon.
- 1:36:59Dave Moorhead went three innings and allowed no runs, no hits.
- 1:37:03Walk one and struck out two.
- 1:37:07There's a fly ball into short center field.
- 1:37:09Flood jumps in and makes the catch.
- 1:37:13He did that twice yesterday and has done it again today.
- 1:37:17He has a great knack of getting a jump on the ball.
- 1:37:20Looks for a moment like it might drop in but Flood with an extra burst of speed comes in and makes the catch for Tyre Lyon.
- 1:37:28And there are two men out in the Red Sox eighth inning.
- 1:37:32And the batter is the leadoff man, Jose Tardibol.
- 1:37:39Bob Gibson throws a fastball high and away, ball one.
- 1:37:44Tardibol has rounded out the burst twice and had an infield hit.
- 1:37:52The pitch, Bob takes a little off its ball too.
- 1:38:06The pitch is low, oh it's a strike right at the knees, two and one, two balls in, one strike to count.
- 1:38:12Augie Donatelli of the National League calling the balls and strikes.
- 1:38:18The pitch is foul back, two and two.
- 1:38:22Gibson who a couple of times in the game slowed his pace just a little, now working very fast again and looking just as strong as he did in the early innings.
- 1:38:33The two-two pitch, inside three and two on Tardibol.
- 1:38:39Ed Rungy, the umpire at first, Paul Fier at second, John Stevens at third, Frank Umont and Wright, Al Bonik in left field.
- 1:38:48Three and two on Tardibol.
- 1:38:51Gibson throws as a wide shot through the middle into center field for a base hit.
- 1:38:57Right pass, Gibson's head, Bob got his glove up and tried to make a play on it but could not.
- 1:39:03Tardibol has his second hit in the ball game and the fourth for the Red Sox with two men out in the eighth.
- 1:39:11The Cardinals have a six to nothing lead as Dalton Jones moves in.
- 1:39:16Left handed batting third baseman has grounded to the pitcher and twice by the left field.
- 1:39:23Gibson throws high for a ball.
- 1:39:31Three times now the Red Sox have had singles after two were out in this ball game once they had a hit after only one out.
- 1:39:39So Gibson has really not been in any kind of trouble.
- 1:39:43Pitch is low for a ball.
- 1:39:50Nobody has reached second against Gibson.
- 1:39:57Two balls, no strikes. Pitch is a strike call two and one.
- 1:40:06Bob has struck out five. He has watched one.
- 1:40:11There is all three. Three balls, one strike.
- 1:40:15Cardinals sixth and the Red Sox nothing. This is the eighth inning.
- 1:40:20Cardinals lead in the World Series two games to one.
- 1:40:26Line drive to right field. Maris flips but misses the catch.
- 1:40:31Fine play by the Cardinals right fielder on a hard line drive that appeared to hand top him.
- 1:40:37He flips just a bit but kept his footing enough to make the play and the Red Sox are down on the eighth.
- 1:40:44Now on one hit one man is left on. After seven and one half St. Louis sixth and Haunton nothing.
- 1:40:53They are going to the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:40:58We have a new pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and I can imagine I am sure the kid will agree with me.
- 1:41:04We have a boy out there now by the name of Ken Brett. He is 18 years old.
- 1:41:10I would believe that he could be just a little bit nervous.
- 1:41:14He is quite a boy. Just as a matter of fact, he turned 19 a couple of weeks ago. He is a hard-crawling left-hander.
- 1:41:23He is out of California and the Red Sox find him again ahead of the great pitcher of the Cincinnati Reds, Gary Nola.
- 1:41:32He has two innings of Major League experience.
- 1:41:35Here is the first pitch from him to Shannon and Southside ball one.
- 1:41:40It looks like his fastball kind of tails away from a right-handed hitter.
- 1:41:45That is the way they say it works most of the time.
- 1:41:49Ken froze and this one is low ball two.
- 1:41:55Quite an experience for this young fellow to be pitching at the age of 19 in a World Series.
- 1:42:03Just a year away from high school.
- 1:42:07Here is the two-nothing pitch. Shannon fouls it back out of play.
- 1:42:11Mike today is 0-2. He fouled a pepper celly, walked and grounded out the third.
- 1:42:17I tell you what, though, Pee-wee, I did a dugout interview show with Ken Brett the first day he came up to the majors.
- 1:42:23It was the first time he had ever been on a radio program and he ate a candy bar all through the show.
- 1:42:29He doesn't say, well, he has got the pool as people his age say.
- 1:42:34Pitch is outside ball three. He looks to me like he is throwing pretty free and easy out there.
- 1:42:40Maybe I'll have to retract that thing. Maybe he isn't nervous.
- 1:42:43He said his knee shook a little that first time.
- 1:42:46Three balls and one strike to count on Shannon on the air on deck.
- 1:42:50Last of the eight. Brett delivers foul ball out of play to right field going into the upper demand.
- 1:42:57And now it is raining.
- 1:43:00It has started to rain fairly hard and down below fans are tampering to do it's cover.
- 1:43:10Three balls, two strikes. The pitch.
- 1:43:13Shannon pops it up in foul territory off third. Ryan and Joan Dover.
- 1:43:18Mike Ryan makes the catch.
- 1:43:20Shannon fouls to the catcher Mike Ryan, one out of the eight today.
- 1:43:26So it has been cloudy and cool all day. We have had a threat of rain here for a couple of days and now we are getting it.
- 1:43:33The Cardinals lead by a score of six to nothing.
- 1:43:37Incidentally, Alan Ross, our statistician, tells us there has never been a World Series game that has done less than nine innings.
- 1:43:45They have always gotten through all of them.
- 1:43:51Bobby here at the plate. Pitch two and it is swung on a miss, strike one.
- 1:43:56Bullion has a single and a double and has been called out on strikes. One away in the eight.
- 1:44:04The pitch. Fastball swung on a miss, strike two.
- 1:44:08Dave Moore hits. Pitch brilliantly for Boston today.
- 1:44:11And Gary Bell in relief, the man who started yesterday, also pitched very well.
- 1:44:19The catch throws and he gets him with a breaking pitch around the knees.
- 1:44:23So he has gotten the first two men here in the eight.
- 1:44:26Striking out Bullion and Harvier.
- 1:44:29And with two out and nobody aboard, the batter is Dow Maxfield.
- 1:44:34St. Louis six and Boston nothing.
- 1:44:36Pitch nine and all for the Cardinals.
- 1:44:38Zero four and all for Boston.
- 1:44:41The pitch to Maxfield is the ball ball one.
- 1:44:45And now has single the last round of the short, drops out the third.
- 1:44:53Ken Brett gets the sign from Ryan.
- 1:44:56Useful left hander throws and it's served foul off the first face side out of play.
- 1:45:01One and one.
- 1:45:13Pitch is a four and one.
- 1:45:16And this one gets by, ball two and strike one.
- 1:45:20Cardinals leading six to nothing.
- 1:45:25Only three times in the history of the World Series has a team been down three games to one and come on to win it all.
- 1:45:36Pitch is a ball three and one.
- 1:45:42Three Boston over Pittsburgh in 1925, Pittsburgh over Washington and in 1958 New York over Milwaukee.
- 1:45:50Three one pitch.
- 1:45:52Going outside, Maxfield gets a walk.
- 1:45:57With two out of the eighth inning, Brett walks Maxfield.
- 1:46:03And the batter will be Bob Gibson.
- 1:46:11The Cardinals pitcher getting a very fine hand which is well earned as he pitched another straight ball game in the World Series today.
- 1:46:21He slide to left, slide to center and walks.
- 1:46:26Brett slows to him, he swings and then he strikes one.
- 1:46:37The young left hander of the Red Sox gets the sign from Maya.
- 1:46:42Looks toward first, throws, Gibson takes it high, one ball one strike.
- 1:46:54Brett is a fine all around athlete and is also a very good hitter and could play several positions.
- 1:47:03One pitch, grounded toward Petrofeli, off to his right and with it over to second for the fourth play, retiring the side.
- 1:47:10The Cardinals are out of the eighth inning.
- 1:47:12No runs, no hits, one man is left on at the end of eighth, St. Louis, sixth and Boston nothing.
- 1:47:19It's a line wide into right center field, Maris going hard, can't get it.
- 1:47:24It's through the wall, Yosemke going into second base, standing with a double.
- 1:47:30Yosemke doubles to right field to open the box in ninth inning.
- 1:47:35Red Sox failing six to nothing and the batter is going to be George Scott.
- 1:47:47George Scott has struck out, singles to left and grounded out to shortstop.
- 1:47:52The rain is coming down harder now.
- 1:47:56Yosemke gets them ready, the pitch, high fly ball to right field, Maris ready, makes the catch,
- 1:48:04Yers tagged up, is heading for third base, the long throw is not in time, safe at third.
- 1:48:12George Scott flies to right field and after the catch, Yosemke moves to third.
- 1:48:18A man at third base and one out here in the ninth inning, the Cardinals with a six to nothing lead.
- 1:48:29The Cardinals got four in the first and two in the third and that's been the story on the scoreboard today.
- 1:48:37Reggie Smith is all for two, he's grounded to second, bounced to first and walks.
- 1:48:47The crowd went bang and he's free.
- 1:49:02Gibson into the windup and the pitch, Smith takes it up high.
- 1:49:10One ball and one strike, one away.
- 1:49:13Bob Gibson has one out in the ninth with Yersemke at third for Boston.
- 1:49:19Cardinal right hander winds and throws, the pitch is fouled back to the screen one and two.
- 1:49:35Jim McCarver hangs out his side.
- 1:49:38The Cardinal right hander shakes it off.
- 1:49:41Now he's ready to wind up and pitch.
- 1:49:44Breaking ball over air court, Mike Call and Reggie Smith protests to the plate umpire,
- 1:49:49Augie Donatelli, before going back to the bench.
- 1:49:53So that is strikeout number six for Gibson.
- 1:49:56Now there are two men out in the Boston ninth inning, the Cardinals have a six to nothing lead.
- 1:50:07There's the windup and the pitch to Adair, ground ball off Gibson out to Javier,
- 1:50:12throw to first page and Coleman as Bob Gibson steps out to Boston with another brilliant performance here this afternoon.
- 1:50:21In the ninth, no runs, one hit and one man left on and the final score was St. Louis fifth and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:50:31We'll be back in just a moment with a resume of today's game.
- 1:50:34Gibson and the Red Sox six to nothing.
- 1:50:37Momentarily we'll be going down to Tony Kuback on the field and he'll be talking with Lou Brock who has played brilliantly for St. Louis in this series.
- 1:50:49And now let's go down to Tony Kuback, he is down there, let's go down right now.
- 1:50:57Thank you, Kirk, hallelujah, having a very fine series and of course you came in it off a very fine year. How do you feel about going in the World Series?
- 1:51:04Performance go well.
- 1:51:06Well actually Tony, going into the World Series, I guess this is what you play for a year long and of course you get into the World Series, the thrill is there.
- 1:51:13And I've gotten out there a good start and Tony, I feel very delighted about it.
- 1:51:18Actually if there's something like a game plan going into a ball game, they would have to play the Red Sox.
- 1:51:23And keeping you off base with their game plan and of course I think yours has been to keep your trims and it's worked just that way.
- 1:51:29You have had the big day up in Boston, they beat you, but you've had a couple of good days and you've beaten them.
- 1:51:34So how has your trims impressed you as a ball player?
- 1:51:37Well Tony, I've seen your trims game with Syod in Arizona when he trained out west and he's a complete ball player and he's a tremendous hitter.
- 1:51:46I have a really tremendous hitter in Iowa Lake too and of course anybody can be pitched to and our game plan has been going pretty good against Carl.
- 1:51:54And of course this is all I can say that we have a lot of luck with him so far.
- 1:51:59Well what about your own game plan now? To get on base, to try and steal a base and this you've done so well.
- 1:52:05And what about the ball you hit back in the first inning? If there was a turning point it was the very first ball.
- 1:52:10Hit down the third base to Jones, a little bit of a bad hopper, I don't know if he could have gotten you anyway.
- 1:52:16Well Tony, he was playing rather deep, unusually for third baseman and of course I picked a bunt down the third base line and he didn't move in.
- 1:52:23And of course I was trying to get him in because the guy San Diego had a good sinker ball and of course the next hit was a good sinker ball.
- 1:52:31They hit off the end of our bat and I was glad he didn't come in.
- 1:52:34What about the World Trees going back to Boston? Do you think they'll end right here tomorrow with Calvin or do you think they'll go back to Boston?
- 1:52:40Well I don't know Tony, we're going to give it all we've got. I think there's quite a few guys on the ball club who feel like they want to end it here.
- 1:52:48So there's going to be a little extra tomorrow and I hope that we can end it here.
- 1:52:52Well you've had yourself a fine series and of course your speed has told a big story for the Cardinal ball club.
- 1:52:58What about Bob Gips? He's been just sensational for you, hasn't he, in the football game?
- 1:53:01This is it. Bob is practically unbeatable. Anytime Bob says three games we can count on him winning two.
- 1:53:08And so far he's won two. If there's a third game to be pitched I think Bob's going to do a good job in that one Tony.
- 1:53:15You've got Jim Lomborg coming up tomorrow in the ball game versus Steve Towner, a fine left hander.
- 1:53:20What are you personally going to try and do differently against Jim Lomborg in tomorrow's ball game?
- 1:53:25Well I was trying to get on base Tony. As you know the first game Jim Pitch I wasn't able to get on base.
- 1:53:31I hit the ball shop a few times. But I won't change any game plan. Matter of fact I don't have any game plan.
- 1:53:36I just go up there and play now.
- 1:53:38Lou Brock thank you so much. Congratulations. Best of luck to you tomorrow and the rest of the series for their B of 6 and 7 games.
- 1:53:43Now back to Kirk County.
- 1:53:45Bob Gibson. Sandy Colfax County is up in the back Bob Gibson and Ken Coleman.
- 1:53:51I don't think I can say anything about him. You watch him pitch, you look at the scoreboard and you know all about him.
- 1:53:57He doesn't beat himself. I think that's the biggest thing about Bob. He's a great pitcher, he's got great stuff.
- 1:54:02But you're going to have to beat him. He's not going to help you. He's not going to walk many hitters.
- 1:54:06He's not going to give in to the hitters. He's not going to make too many bad pitches.
- 1:54:10He's a great fielding pitcher. He does everything that you have to do out there.
- 1:54:14Plus the fact that he's one of the great competitors at Naked Baseball.
- 1:54:18I'd say no ball game is fun, but a ball game is a pitch against a guy like that.
- 1:54:23You happen to beat him. You take special pride in a ball game like that.
- 1:54:27If he beats you, you can't feel too bad about it. You just hope you're a little above 500 against a guy like that.
- 1:54:33Well I would say that's a pretty good description of Bob Gibson. I know Sandy has seen him quite a few times.
- 1:54:40And the one thing that Sandy said, Ken, that really impressed me, this fella really challenges you.
- 1:54:45He does not walk you. He makes you hit the ball.
- 1:54:49And I don't think it makes any difference to him, but it'd be very brute. Call your trip. See who's up there.
- 1:54:55He's going to bring that ball in that strike zone.
- 1:54:57That's for sure. Now to review the scoring for anyone who tuned in late.
- 1:55:01In the first inning of the ball game, Lou Brock led off with an infield single.
- 1:55:06Kurt Slug followed with a single to left field.
- 1:55:09And with runners at first and second, Roger Maris doubled to left to drive in the first two runs.
- 1:55:14Cepeda flied to right and Maris went to third after the catch.
- 1:55:18McCarver singled to right to score Roger Maris.
- 1:55:22Then McCarver went to second base on a single by Julian Javier and scored on a single by Dall Maxfield.
- 1:55:30And they wound up with four runs on six base hits in the first inning.
- 1:55:35They added two more in the third when Cepeda led off with a double.
- 1:55:38He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on McCarver's sacrifice fly.
- 1:55:42Shannon walked and then Javier banged out a double to send Micolm with a six run.
- 1:55:52And that was it as far as the scoring was concerned as the Carcass wanted six to nothing.
- 1:55:57Now from the Boston point of view, their situation is this.
- 1:56:02They are down three games to one in this World Series.
- 1:56:06And only three times in the history of the classics has a team been able to come back and overcome that kind of a deficit.
- 1:56:15It happened in 1903 when Boston defeated Pittsburgh.
- 1:56:19And that was an eight game series by the way.
- 1:56:22Boston won five games over to three.
- 1:56:25In 1925, Pittsburgh did it over Washington.
- 1:56:28In 1958, the New York Yankees did it over Milwaukee.
- 1:56:34So that is the story on what faces the Red Sox as a tomorrow will send Jim Lomborgue against Steve Calvin.
- 1:56:44We'll give you the complete rundown right after this message.
