- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 81 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So there are a few topics that we did not fully conclude on from our last episode in terms of the color blue, with perhaps what the Russians call a blue Russian cat breed, nor any particular findings on how blue is used in a way that means puritanical or overly religious or how blue is used to mean off color.
- 1:01I Hate Talking: So we'll do that before our official word or phrase of the episode and our topic.
- 1:07I Hate Talking: So stay tuned for that.
- 1:09I Hate Talking: We did want to address a couple of these things that we, like I said, did not come to a conclusion on last time.
- 1:16I Hate Talking: So the first and perhaps easiest is the Blue Russian, which is the cat breed, and they call that the Sinoy Russki.
- 1:29I Hate Talking: OK, did it come from Russia initially?
- 1:32I Hate Talking: Yes, -- this particular cat -- came from Russia.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: And that is the particular shade of blue or hue of blue that is the dark blue in Russian versus the light blue.
- 1:43I Hate Talking: So it literally means dark blue Russian.
- 1:47I Hate Talking: But why is the cat named that?
- 1:49I Hate Talking: Cause they're not blue.
- 1:50I Hate Talking: In certain lights they appear bluish in color, -- I -- guess, cause they're gray.
- 1:55I Hate Talking: If you don't have never seen one before, they're like a, not even a dark gray, what do you say like a true gray color, bluish gray, -- I -- would say maybe.
- 2:04I Hate Talking: OK, well, maybe that's what if I'm Russian, I would think that was the color blue.
- 2:09I Hate Talking: Well, if you were in Russian, you would have a greater -- attenuation to the color blue because of the different words for -- blue.
- 2:17I Hate Talking: Yes, I would say it's just a pure gray.
- 2:19I Hate Talking: So Russians are just better at blue and identification of blue.
- 2:22I Hate Talking: So I think we should just trust them when they say this cat is blue.
- 2:26I Hate Talking: I like their tea and I like their cats, for sure.
- 2:29I Hate Talking: Tea?
- 2:31I Hate Talking: Yeah, you don't like tea.
- 2:33I Hate Talking: I don't, but I do like when I was in Russia, I would go to tea at this elderly lady's house and I really liked whatever she put in her tea.
- 2:43I Hate Talking: I didn't speak Russian, so I didn't quite understand what you put in it.
- 2:47I Hate Talking: But she didn't like that I was a social worker, because she told me that in Russia, they don't need social workers.
- 2:53I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 2:55I Hate Talking: So.
- 2:55I Hate Talking: You know, take that for what it means, but I enjoyed whatever we, that's why we, our teapot is Russian for her, yeah.
- 3:05I Hate Talking: All right, go on.
- 3:07I Hate Talking: So we have the Russian Blue cat, which is our kitty, that's 12 years old, and go on, the next thing.
- 3:17I Hate Talking: So the other one was blue as it relates to puritanical law, overly religious, moral rigidity.
- 3:27I Hate Talking: Yeah, I've never heard that before.
- 3:28I Hate Talking: OK, so elaborate on that one since you studied it.
- 3:31I Hate Talking: So this one does not have any particular conclusive evidence.
- 3:36I Hate Talking: It's sort of like our on the fly episode where there are some reasonable and Seemingly legitimate explanations, but none that are firmly proven.
- 3:47I Hate Talking: So this one does seem to have at least the locale established that it came from the New England area of the Americas in the probably 18th century, it seems.
- 4:03I Hate Talking: And it is theorized that perhaps it is because the Puritans were very strict in their religiosity and they wore blue as sort of their color of clothing.
- 4:19I Hate Talking: And therefore, their rules were the blue rules because they were Puritans and wore blue.
- 4:26I Hate Talking: There's another theory that states that the rules for conduct, especially on the Sabbath, were written on blue paper, so then, therefore, those were blue laws.
- 4:40I Hate Talking: Is that where the term possibly comes from for blue laws?
- 4:44I Hate Talking: It is, they do definitely seem related, that this moral rigidity and blue laws as it relates to conduct on Sundays are somehow related, whether that came from Puritan's clothing color or perhaps the paper on which these rules were printed is how we got blue.
- 5:04I Hate Talking: Yeah, one day we'll have to talk about that, because I had never heard blue law before.
- 5:09I Hate Talking: I grew up on the west coast, and we got married and we moved to rural Pennsylvania.
- 5:15I Hate Talking: I learned about blue law, like that was not a thing I knew existed, and I'd like to learn more about that sometime.
- 5:22I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 5:23I Hate Talking: So California doesn't have blue law.
- 5:26I Hate Talking: Yeah, about, I guess they're about as far as away they can get from New England.
- 5:31I Hate Talking: And then it also is theorized to perhaps be a derogatory term for blue and these people's way of life that it was overbearing and gloomy and therefore it was blue because it was saddening to, to follow these moralistic edicts that they set forward.
- 5:52I Hate Talking: I buy that, but it's just so funny that's so different.
- 5:55I Hate Talking: When I think of someone saying that's so blue, I think inappropriate.
- 5:59I Hate Talking: So it's funny they're so extreme.
- 6:01I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 6:02I Hate Talking: And then there's quite a few theories on blue as it relates to off color.
- 6:07I Hate Talking: There are some that theorize that blue as off color was in direct opposition to blue laws and things like that.
- 6:16I Hate Talking: -- So -- almost as like it would make the blue mad kind of thing.
- 6:20I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:20I Hate Talking: That does not have a lot of support.
- 6:23I Hate Talking: -- That -- is very, I buy that one, very narrowly held theory.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: Then there are some things with particularly swearing.
- 6:33I Hate Talking: That it is related to turning the air blue.
- 6:39I Hate Talking: So if somebody's using inappropriate language that they would be turning the air blue and therefore that is blue remarks or blue content.
- 6:50I Hate Talking: What do they mean by turning the air blue, like sucking all the air out of the room kind of thing like.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: Shocking No, I think it would be, maybe, I don't know.
- 7:00I Hate Talking: I didn't actually research that particular phrase.
- 7:02I Hate Talking: I've heard that phrase before.
- 7:04I Hate Talking: I don't know where the particular etymology of that phrase is from.
- 7:09I Hate Talking: We're gonna be busy.
- 7:10I Hate Talking: So maybe we'll have a follow-up for next episode.
- 7:13I Hate Talking: And then the third theory is that it is related to the clothing that blue collar workers wear, and they would perhaps not conduct themselves in the most appropriate manner and therefore anything that a blue collar does would be blue, and that would be sort of the off color, not appropriate for work type jokes and things of that nature.
- 7:39I Hate Talking: I don't like that one.
- 7:40I Hate Talking: The most widely held theory and what is actually documented is it's the turn the air blue.
- 7:46I Hate Talking: OK, I can picture that like shocking, like everyone takes a gasp, and you're blue cause you're not breathing, you're shocked.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: At the inappropriateness.
- 7:57I Hate Talking: All right, I'll go with that one, sure.
- 7:59I Hate Talking: Hm.
- 8:00I Hate Talking: So, the particular research that I just did on turn the air blue is that this also probably originated in the 1800s, and it's possibly a slang term for like a blue streak where that is related to brimstone and lightning in terms of A blue tinged sky when you are going to be judged for what you're going to do or what you are doing and turning the air blue like Sodom and or having that blue streak kind of thing, yes, OK.
- 8:35I Hate Talking: So, some potential theories, no specific actual proven etymology on these particular things, but interesting nonetheless, and I think it is pretty definitive that they're not directly related.
- 8:50I Hate Talking: I think that is one of the theories that they sort of use blue in terms of the off-color as sort of a direct opposition to blue from a moral rigidity, but that is one of the.
- 9:00I Hate Talking: Least likely theories, so I would hold to that they're probably unrelated and developed completely separately.
- 9:07I Hate Talking: Yeah, that makes sense, but I like the idea that it's in opposition of it.
- 9:11I Hate Talking: Perhaps so.
- 9:12I Hate Talking: I think people, if they're going to designate something as opposition, they're going to choose something that is opposite, so.
- 9:20I Hate Talking: Red and blue Or something like that, that.
- 9:24I Hate Talking: It would turn the air red.
- 9:26I Hate Talking: I guess.
- 9:28I Hate Talking: Yeah, you're right.
- 9:30I Hate Talking: At least in modern day, yeah.
- 9:32I Hate Talking: Well, the 1800s aren't that unmodern.
- 9:35I Hate Talking: So unmodern.
- 9:38I Hate Talking: You're right though, relatively, relatively.
- 9:41I Hate Talking: So, that is our recap and some extra content that we did not get to last time, and now we'll turn our attention to our word or phrase of this episode and our topic as it may or may not relate to that particular word.
- 9:55I Hate Talking: OK, do you know what the word crush means?
- 10:01I Hate Talking: Cresh, so C R E S H.
- 10:05I Hate Talking: No, I'll play with uh Google, how they pronounce it, cause maybe I'm mispronouncing it.
- 10:11I Hate Talking: Fresh It is CRE.
- 10:17I Hate Talking: C H E.
- 10:19I Hate Talking: Crash It's almost like quiche Krish.
- 10:25I Hate Talking: Almost crash.
- 10:28I Hate Talking: Well, that's what Google calls it crush.
- 10:31I Hate Talking: Crush Or crash.
- 10:34I Hate Talking: It sounds vaguely familiar.
- 10:37I Hate Talking: Crash, crash.
- 10:39I Hate Talking: It does sound vaguely familiar.
- 10:41I Hate Talking: I would not be able to give a definition or etymology.
- 10:45I Hate Talking: I feel like I have heard or read this word somewhere before, and maybe if I heard it in context, I would be able to derive a general meaning perhaps, but I do not know what the word creche means.
- 11:00I Hate Talking: All right, well, it is a Latin word.
- 11:03I Hate Talking: That means crib.
- 11:05I Hate Talking: And it's in Luke 2.
- 11:08I Hate Talking: He's talking about Jesus was laid down in the crush.
- 11:11I Hate Talking: So in Latin, often they'll call a nativity scene a crush.
- 11:17I Hate Talking: I see.
- 11:18I Hate Talking: Why wouldn't it be in Greek?
- 11:20I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 11:22I Hate Talking: Well, the New Testament is typically written in Greek.
- 11:26I Hate Talking: OK.
- 11:28I Hate Talking: So this would be from like the Roman Church in Latin days when They had the New Testament in Latin, and they were the only ones that could read it, and then they were the purveyors of the crush.
- 11:38I Hate Talking: It must be because it is the dictionary definition of crush is a model representing the scene of Jesus Christ's birth, displayed in homes or public places at Christmas.
- 11:51I Hate Talking: It also means a nursery where babies or young children are cared for.
- 11:57I Hate Talking: Yes, so that does make sense that it would be something related to the iconography of the Roman Church or other religious institutions that perhaps focus on the actual icons rather than the meaning of the creche.
- 12:14I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 12:16I Hate Talking: So what is it in Greek now?
- 12:18I Hate Talking: I'm curious, what is crib or cresh or Manger in Greek.
- 12:24I Hate Talking: A ni I can't even, I'm not even gonna pretend to pronounce that.
- 12:30I Hate Talking: So hopefully you heard that on there.
- 12:33I Hate Talking: The Greek word for crib in religious context means manger or nativity scene, which we know from baby story Jesus.
- 12:45I Hate Talking: Well, it's interesting to note that the primary definition of fat me.
- 12:53I Hate Talking: Or fate me.
- 12:55I Hate Talking: is manger or feeding trough and crib as the tertiary meaning, so, It's interesting that the Latin word elevates this to the primary meaning of crib.
- 13:09I Hate Talking: Do you think that goes back to the scripture though, where Jesus was laid in a manger and a feeding trough for animals, and then the Latin took that and like I said, elevated it to the meaning of a crib that we know nowadays.
- 13:26I Hate Talking: As the baby was laid in the feeding trough.
- 13:31I Hate Talking: Well, there is the popular Christmas carol Away in a Manger.
- 13:35I Hate Talking: That talks about a particular thing.
- 13:39I Hate Talking: That He was away in a manger, no crib for a bed.
- 13:44I Hate Talking: The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
- 13:47I Hate Talking: So, from that particular song, The crib did not exist.
- 13:53I Hate Talking: There was no crib, there was no crush.
- 13:56I Hate Talking: It was a fat knee.
- 13:58I Hate Talking: A feeding trough, right, a manger.
- 14:02I Hate Talking: So then we ended up taking that term.
- 14:05I Hate Talking: That's where Jesus was laying when he was born.
- 14:08I Hate Talking: Yes, well, my point being that perhaps for the specific intent of how that word is used within the New Testament, within Luke chapter 2, that.
- 14:18I Hate Talking: Perhaps the Greek is more of an apt term because the primary purpose of that particular device was for feeding animals and not a crib, which I think we would typically refer to as Place as a bed for sweet baby's little head and the Latin term co-opts this particular thing and makes that the icon.
- 14:42I Hate Talking: Yeah So, in certain cultures that elevate Latin, you're saying, they would elevate the word, the feeding trough and turn it into a bed, the creche.
- 14:56I Hate Talking: Well, I wonder then if there's a Latin term for feeding trough.
- 15:02I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 15:03I Hate Talking: Or did they just replace the word because it made more sense for their sales of nativity sets?
- 15:11I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 15:12I Hate Talking: You're the one that learned Latin, not me.
- 15:14I Hate Talking: So last night we had a, what, an 8 year old teach us some Latin at an event we were at.
- 15:21I Hate Talking: Do you remember that?
- 15:22I Hate Talking: You were there.
- 15:23I Hate Talking: You might not have been part of the conversation.
- 15:25I Hate Talking: I think I missed that.
- 15:26I Hate Talking: He was saying a word and I asked him what it meant, and he was like, it's Latin.
- 15:30I Hate Talking: I learned that in school.
- 15:32I Hate Talking: Oh, good for you.
- 15:34I Hate Talking: Yeah, indeed, so there is a Latin word.
- 15:38I Hate Talking: Pre espe, that is the word for manger, not crash.
- 15:44I Hate Talking: So in your research of this particular word, this is the word that is used specifically within the Latin translation of Luke 2.
- 15:52I Hate Talking: You look it up.
- 15:56I Hate Talking: You're better looking things up.
- 15:57I Hate Talking: According to AI, the Latin word in Luke chapter 2 verse 7 is that reesespe.
- 16:06I Hate Talking: Which is the word.
- 16:09I Hate Talking: In English, manger.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: And that ultimately means To eat or chew.
- 16:18I Hate Talking: So basically the animals would eat or chew their food.
- 16:22I Hate Talking: At the manger.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: So, the crush is not specifically used within, according to AI, the Latin translation of Luke.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: So then where did crush come from?
- 16:35I Hate Talking: And how did you encounter this particular work?
- 16:38I Hate Talking: Because I'm not finding it here in Greek and Latin translations of the Bible.
- 16:45I Hate Talking: So I did not trust AI.
- 16:48I Hate Talking: And I consulted the Latin Vulgate, and indeed the word manger is this precicipe.
- 16:58I Hate Talking: No, it's not a recipe or however you pronounce it.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: So, I think the word crush is interesting.
- 17:07I Hate Talking: That it means crib and has been used to specifically refer to Jesus' bed in the nativity scene, but It does seem that Greek and Latin agree that The original word was danger.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: I keep researching this or follow up later.
- 17:26I Hate Talking: So I guess to finalize this particular topic, we need to at least check the etymology of the word crush.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: We may not know exactly how it came to be used as a nativity scene, but we have our possibilities with perhaps that came about with the way that the churches were promoting the nativity scene.
- 17:46I Hate Talking: According to Merriam-Webster, it says that in the 1300s, the substitution of crash for manger probably wouldn't have raised any eyebrows back when the spelling was improvised, and several different words and spellings included cratch, rash, rish, and creche.
- 18:11I Hate Talking: Were used to describe a holding feed or livestock.
- 18:15I Hate Talking: To identify a manger where Jesus was laid.
- 18:19I Hate Talking: By the late 18th century, creche, which followed the French and now sometimes spelt without the accent mark, had displayed those older forms of the word that had lost the former manger meaning, coming to refer instead to represent the nativity scene itself.
- 18:40I Hate Talking: That's what I get when I look it up.
- 18:43I Hate Talking: What do you get?
- 18:43I Hate Talking: Yeah, something similar.
- 18:46I Hate Talking: I do not find any Latin roots of this, that this was actually originally a French word and may go back to Germanic languages.
- 18:55I Hate Talking: But creche is a French word that originally meant manger, crib, or stall, so that makes sense that that would not be in the original Greek translations of the New Testament or the Latin Vulgate, cause crush was never The Latin word And that perhaps it does go back to Germanic languages.
- 19:18I Hate Talking: With words that mean crib.
- 19:22I Hate Talking: Right, so in my quick research, maybe I'm wrong about the lad, but that's what it did say.
- 19:27I Hate Talking: But you're right.
- 19:29I Hate Talking: Everything I find as I follow up more, it's French.
- 19:33I Hate Talking: Talking about can never get away from the French words.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: It seems like we always run into those in the words that we choose or are asked to research.
- 19:43I Hate Talking: Maybe we'll just go to France one day and do a live podcast there.
- 19:48I Hate Talking: Perhaps so, and we can just leave our kids at the creche.
- 19:50I Hate Talking: That's right.
- 19:52I Hate Talking: So the reason I was looking up these words was because, one, I feel like you're maybe in an oppositional mood, and so.
- 20:04I Hate Talking: Do you know what happens in 2 months and 2 days from when this podcast drops?
- 20:11I Hate Talking: Well, probably it's gonna be Christmas, Christmas Day.
- 20:16I Hate Talking: Christmas Day, indeed.
- 20:17I Hate Talking: So in that spirit, I wanna talk about when is too early to decorate or for Christmas or sing Christmas songs.
- 20:30I Hate Talking: I feel like we've talked about this before.
- 20:33I Hate Talking: Have we not?
- 20:35I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 20:36I Hate Talking: Maybe we, I have for sure because we don't agree.
- 20:39I Hate Talking: Maybe I think Christmas tide, not time, was one of our episodes, but I think that was mainly more focused on when will Christmas end.
- 20:48I Hate Talking: So now you're flipping that around and asking when can Christmas begin?
- 20:53I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 20:54I Hate Talking: I feel like we maybe we touched on that, but maybe not fully.
- 20:58I Hate Talking: So, my default stance is that Thanksgiving needs to be celebrated and respected, and then after that, you can begin on the Christmas festivities.
- 21:10I Hate Talking: So I looked it up, I couldn't get exact estimates or realistic ones cause they vary, cause I wanted to look at what most people say, cause you're right, I feel like the majority do say.
- 21:23I Hate Talking: Any day after Thanksgiving is fair game.
- 21:27I Hate Talking: If you didn't care.
- 21:29I Hate Talking: I already have a tree.
- 21:31I Hate Talking: And I already have my lights on the house.
- 21:36I Hate Talking: So I think we vary, very differently in that.
- 21:40I Hate Talking: That's true, you already do have lights up around the house, though, they are like yellow and browns, and I guess that -- that's -- fall.
- 21:46I Hate Talking: That's fall, but in your mind you don't think of them as Christmas lights at all?
- 21:50I Hate Talking: No, cause they have leaves next to them.
- 21:53I Hate Talking: I see.
- 21:54I Hate Talking: If it's leaves, it's fall, and yellow lights, that's definitely fall.
- 22:00I Hate Talking: White or green and red, that is Christmas.
- 22:05I Hate Talking: I'm also a fan of Christmas trees that were alive or previously alive, and to have a real tree, Christmas tree in your home for 2+ months seems a bit dangerous.
- 22:20I Hate Talking: Yeah, that seems dangerous.
- 22:22I Hate Talking: Yes, you are a big fan of real trees.
- 22:25I Hate Talking: I think we've only in our life had one year.
- 22:28I Hate Talking: In our marriage, we've had, we've been married for over 16 years now.
- 22:32I Hate Talking: One year we had a fake tree, and I think this year we're probably gonna have a fake tree because of certain lifestyle choices, right?
- 22:43I Hate Talking: So, how do you feel about that then?
- 22:47I Hate Talking: I think in the year that we did not have a real tree, we did still have like real pine boughs.
- 22:53I Hate Talking: And some branches and things like that.
- 22:55I Hate Talking: So we've always had fake trees in different parts of the house, cause I just love decorating.
- 23:02I Hate Talking: And that year, it wasn't feasible or realistic for us to have a real one.
- 23:07I Hate Talking: So we do have artificial trees.
- 23:11I Hate Talking: And we're just gonna make an artificial tree, our real tree this year, and that's what we did that year as well.
- 23:20I Hate Talking: But you got sad.
- 23:21I Hate Talking: So that was my choice that year back then.
- 23:24I Hate Talking: That was my choice for certain circumstances we were in and finances, yada yada.
- 23:30I Hate Talking: So I made the choice, let's not buy a real one.
- 23:33I Hate Talking: We have artificial trees and I could tell you were sad.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: So I did go to the store and I bought a really nice real life reef.
- 23:42I Hate Talking: And that's what we had for the pine scent.
- 23:45I Hate Talking: Correct, yes, that's what I'm thinking of, so, so this year, do you think you're gonna be sad?
- 23:51I Hate Talking: We've already discussed, let's not buy a real tree.
- 23:53I Hate Talking: We have artificials and because of circumstances, it makes more sense this year.
- 23:59I Hate Talking: Do you think when the time comes you'll be sad at that choice.
- 24:03I Hate Talking: Perhaps maybe we can go visit some locations that have real pine trees as their decorations, and that will be sufficient.
- 24:13I Hate Talking: Just to smell it or to bring some home.
- 24:15I Hate Talking: You had to visit it and smell it and enjoy -- the presence -- of a, would you want like a real-life reef like before, or Costco sometimes has some garland that's -- real -- pine.
- 24:28I Hate Talking: Well, it's almost sounds like you're trying to sell me that we should get a real tree right now.
- 24:31I Hate Talking: No, I'm the one that's anti-real tree.
- 24:34I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 24:36I Hate Talking: So, I don't know.
- 24:37I Hate Talking: I suppose my mind has not been on Christmas, so I have not given any mental capacity to thinking about that and whether a real tree will be necessary or not, or some substitutionary thing that will be similar but not the same.
- 24:57I Hate Talking: So what would happen if she came home from work tomorrow and our house was all decked out for Christmas?
- 25:04I Hate Talking: What would you feel or do?
- 25:06I Hate Talking: Yeah, I guess I would just go along with it, but perhaps not be that excited about it.
- 25:13I Hate Talking: So if the mantle had our stockings, hon.
- 25:16I Hate Talking: What am I supposed to do?
- 25:19I Hate Talking: Just take them down and then you'll be all upset.
- 25:21I Hate Talking: The kids, we'd all make such a big deal about you being a Scrooge.
- 25:27I Hate Talking: That's true, so.
- 25:29I Hate Talking: And then music, I think Christmas in July, you can have your one day in July to play some Christmas music, but again, it's really gotta wait till after Thanksgiving.
- 25:39I Hate Talking: I think that places do play Christmas music even earlier and earlier these days that you'll hear Christmas music on the radio or in the mall or in various public places before Thanksgiving.
- 25:52I Hate Talking: Mhm.
- 25:53I Hate Talking: You need to give Thanksgiving its due respect.
- 25:56I Hate Talking: Why?
- 25:57I Hate Talking: Because it's a national holiday.
- 25:58I Hate Talking: Man.
- 26:00I Hate Talking: Do you know that Canada celebrates Thanksgiving already?
- 26:04I Hate Talking: They've already celebrated.
- 26:06I Hate Talking: Well, they must be very thankful people then.
- 26:08I Hate Talking: They're so smart.
- 26:10I Hate Talking: They got their time to celebrate.
- 26:13I Hate Talking: Now they can focus on Christmas.
- 26:15I Hate Talking: They don't even really celebrate Christmas, they celebrate Boxing Day.
- 26:18I Hate Talking: Yeah, right.
- 26:20I Hate Talking: But I'm just saying that it's ridiculous that we squeeze so much into less than a month.
- 26:26I Hate Talking: It's a little bit more than a month, and then if you keep going, like we talked about in our Christmas side episode.
- 26:33I Hate Talking: Which would have been less than a year ago, I believe, because we probably talked about that in January, is that you can have the 12 days of Christmas and then you're celebrating into January and beyond, actually, which we do and that's helpful for us as a couple.
- 26:50I Hate Talking: Thanksgiving this year is November 27th.
- 26:54I Hate Talking: That is less than 30 days till Christmas.
- 26:58I Hate Talking: So technically, if you want to stop celebrating on Christmas.
- 27:02I Hate Talking: You're not even giving me a whole month to celebrate.
- 27:06I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think if it was up to me and I had no external pressure or cultural pressure that I would celebrate Christmas on Christmas.
- 27:17I Hate Talking: And then have the celebration last after Christmas.
- 27:20I Hate Talking: You don't really do anything Christmas related until Christmas, and then you celebrate Christmas post Christmas Day.
- 27:27I Hate Talking: No lights.
- 27:28I Hate Talking: Yeah, you put them up on Christmas, and then you have the 12 days of Christmas.
- 27:32I Hate Talking: Do you know that I started watching my Christmas movies last week?
- 27:39I Hate Talking: It does not surprise me.
- 27:41I Hate Talking: I did not know that as a fact, but I am not surprised.
- 27:44I Hate Talking: How do you feel about that?
- 27:45I Hate Talking: Yeah, it's fine, you can do your own Christmas routine, but I'm Probably not going to partake in any of that.
- 27:54I Hate Talking: Plus, I don't really even necessarily like very many Christmas movies.
- 27:58I Hate Talking: There's a few, like Die Hard and A Christmas Carol And -- What's the one with you -- like A Wonderful Life.
- 28:08I Hate Talking: Wonderful Life.
- 28:09I Hate Talking: Yes, you watch that every year.
- 28:10I Hate Talking: That's not actually the one I was thinking of that I can't place the name, uh, shoot your eye out one.
- 28:14I Hate Talking: Oh, -- Christmas -- Story.
- 28:16I Hate Talking: Christmas.
- 28:16I Hate Talking: Yeah, we always watch A Christmas Story.
- 28:19I Hate Talking: We always watch It's a Wonderful Life.
- 28:21I Hate Talking: I feel like it's yours and mine.
- 28:23I Hate Talking: Tradition.
- 28:25I Hate Talking: I actually enjoy the elf, that's so good.
- 28:30I Hate Talking: No, I was going to say the Twilight Zone marathon on New Year's Day more than I enjoy Christmas and the related movies.
- 28:38I Hate Talking: Oh, that makes me wanna cry.
- 28:39I Hate Talking: That is good too though, the Twilight marathon.
- 28:42I Hate Talking: No, I love Christmas.
- 28:45I Hate Talking: You tolerate watching one or two.
- 28:48I Hate Talking: I feel like I can get you to watch one or two romantic Hallmark movies with me.
- 28:53I Hate Talking: I was talking to someone recently and she is doing a Hallmark movie right now, so I let her know that I am the biggest Hallmark movie fan, and I will watch and critique anything you want to give me, no matter when.
- 29:10I Hate Talking: And so that was super exciting.
- 29:12I Hate Talking: I came home, I remember I told you like, I'm gonna read her thing and I'm so excited.
- 29:17I Hate Talking: And that was specifically Christmas themed or it's just Christmas movie.
- 29:22I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 29:23I Hate Talking: If you can get your name on the credits.
- 29:25I Hate Talking: I don't even care.
- 29:27I Hate Talking: I just wanna read the scripts.
- 29:29I Hate Talking: Oh, so exciting.
- 29:31I Hate Talking: Indeed, that's my dream.
- 29:33I Hate Talking: I'm not a writer, obviously, but I'll watch or read anything people wanna write Christmas themed.
- 29:40I Hate Talking: So what happens right now, this is the time of year, things are changing in the stores.
- 29:47I Hate Talking: You're getting more Christmas than Halloween or anything else.
- 29:51I Hate Talking: So how does that make you feel when you walk into Target?
- 29:54I Hate Talking: And you see the Santa Claus.
- 29:58I Hate Talking: Well, Halloween's not even over yet, and they're already transitioning, -- so I think that's -- essentially Halloween's over.
- 30:05I Hate Talking: Well, that's fine with me.
- 30:06I Hate Talking: I would, I would trade out Halloween for Christmas, but then they need their Thanksgiving decorations like some turkeys and stuff.
- 30:14I Hate Talking: That's why we should celebrate beginning of October.
- 30:18I Hate Talking: People by after Halloween are over and Thanksgiving doesn't get its due, right?
- 30:24I Hate Talking: Because of when it's located, it needs to be earlier in the year.
- 30:29I Hate Talking: Oh, I guess you can write a letter to President Donald Trump.
- 30:35I Hate Talking: Maybe if he's not busy knocking over half the White House, he can change the date of Thanksgiving.
- 30:40I Hate Talking: That could be the next thing he does.
- 30:42I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 30:44I Hate Talking: That'd be cool.
- 30:46I Hate Talking: What I would really like the government to do is just get rid of daylight savings time.
- 30:50I Hate Talking: That would be better than Christmas, better than Thanksgiving, better than all national holidays combined, just do that.
- 30:58I Hate Talking: And you could even have a national holiday like the abolition of Daylight savings time Day.
- 31:03I Hate Talking: I think I think that's way more important things to the government.
- 31:09I Hate Talking: If I was gonna ask them to do one thing.
- 31:12I Hate Talking: It would be something different.
- 31:16I Hate Talking: But it's good for you.
- 31:19I Hate Talking: It's a fight you're willing to fight.
- 31:21I Hate Talking: I just mean in terms of.
- 31:23I Hate Talking: Holiday and construction designations that the daily savings time is.
- 31:30I Hate Talking: Much more important than any demolition, reconstruction, as well as any designation of holidays, past, present, or future.
- 31:40I Hate Talking: Now, if there's a ballot and it says, change the date of Thanksgiving, Or make daylight savings time a national holiday, I would vote to change Thanksgiving.
- 31:55I Hate Talking: Earlier, because I get overshadowed by everything.
- 32:01I Hate Talking: But I agree, get rid of daylight savings time.
- 32:06I Hate Talking: It is, well, when do we fall back -- for daylight savings -- time?
- 32:09I Hate Talking: Beginning of November.
- 32:10I Hate Talking: Beginning of November, I guess that varies based on whatever the Sunday is.
- 32:14I Hate Talking: -- So -- what if we just change Thanksgiving to the old date of fallback daylight savings.
- 32:23I Hate Talking: And then you can kill two birds with one stone.
- 32:26I Hate Talking: OK, I'll vote for that.
- 32:28I Hate Talking: That ups it 3 weeks, maybe 4 weeks.
- 32:32I Hate Talking: So I would vote for you, for those, that's your platform.
- 32:37I Hate Talking: My question is, Would daylight savings time ever fall on Halloween or Thanksgiving ever fall on Halloween at that point?
- 32:47I Hate Talking: I don't think it could because in President Bush or somebody moved daylight savings time so that it always fell after Halloween?
- 32:56I Hate Talking: They, yeah, they did it uh Sunday after Halloween, so you get more daylight for trick or treating.
- 33:04I Hate Talking: Yes, so I guess the worst case is that you would have like Halloween night on Saturday night.
- 33:11I Hate Talking: 31st and then the next day, Sunday would be Thanksgiving.
- 33:15I Hate Talking: So you would just change Thanksgiving.
- 33:17I Hate Talking: It wouldn't be the Thursday.
- 33:19I Hate Talking: No, this is, yes, you're, you're saying we can do anything.
- 33:22I Hate Talking: So let's just put November Thanksgiving on.
- 33:26I Hate Talking: November 1st, always.
- 33:27I Hate Talking: No, no, no, the Sunday, the first Sunday in November, the day that it used to be daylight savings fall back because then we can give thanks that daylight savings doesn't exist anymore.
- 33:38I Hate Talking: OK.
- 33:40I Hate Talking: Why?
- 33:42I Hate Talking: OK, but tell me, why can't we do that?
- 33:44I Hate Talking: You have a fairly flexible career.
- 33:47I Hate Talking: A lot of your family does too, or we don't really do Thanksgiving with my family cause we're so, you know, across the country.
- 33:55I Hate Talking: So why could we not personally celebrate Thanksgiving the first Sunday in November.
- 34:02I Hate Talking: And then it's Christmas season.
- 34:05I Hate Talking: Well, I guess if enough people do that, then that's a possibility.
- 34:10I Hate Talking: -- But why can't -- we?
- 34:11I Hate Talking: I guess we could.
- 34:12I Hate Talking: Your job is flexible, right?
- 34:15I Hate Talking: In fact, they'd probably prefer it, right?
- 34:18I Hate Talking: Yeah, -- I -- suppose so.
- 34:19I Hate Talking: So why couldn't we change Thanksgiving?
- 34:24I Hate Talking: I think there's still some cultural and nationalistic unity in the Macy's Day Parade, Macy's Day Parade, you have Black Friday, you have.
- 34:36I Hate Talking: Certain things where all of the nation is giving thanks on the same day that is a bit of a cultural.
- 34:46I Hate Talking: Unifying event, OK.
- 34:48I Hate Talking: I don't have much argument beyond that.
- 34:51I Hate Talking: That's pretty much it.
- 34:52I Hate Talking: There's the cultural events and the national unity.
- 34:56I Hate Talking: That doesn't sound that convincing to why we can't decorate, put our tree up right now.
- 35:02I Hate Talking: Or November 2nd.
- 35:04I Hate Talking: So we had to have to wait till after Halloween.
- 35:07I Hate Talking: Is that our new rule?
- 35:08I Hate Talking: Is that a rule?
- 35:09I Hate Talking: That is not our rule.
- 35:11I Hate Talking: It is interesting just how much is influenced by cultural norms and expectations for events and holidays.
- 35:19I Hate Talking: Myself included, I'm affected by that.
- 35:22I Hate Talking: So you are a listener, can let us know when you start your Christmas season.
- 35:28I Hate Talking: And perhaps you would also like to weigh in on potentially moving Thanksgiving or abolishing daylight savings time or both and just combining them into the same day.
- 35:40I Hate Talking: So you can always let us know in the comments or send us a text or send us an email.
- 35:47I Hate Talking: And as an interesting note, I believe we're on track for October to have our most listens ever.
- 35:53I Hate Talking: Wow, cool in a month for us.
- 35:56I Hate Talking: Yes, so.
- 35:57I Hate Talking: Well, -- thanks -- y'all.
- 35:59I Hate Talking: We want to keep that going.
- 36:00I Hate Talking: So if you enjoyed this episode, instead of just sharing it with one person, share with two, because then we can have exponential growth.
- 36:07I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 36:08I Hate Talking: And then November will be crazy high.
- 36:11I Hate Talking: Perhaps so, or maybe we'll be busy celebrating Christmas.
- 36:15I Hate Talking: Oh, I can't wait.
- 36:17I Hate Talking: So from your friends at I Hate Talking, until next time, remember, it is only through talking that we begin the journey to understanding.
