- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the three O take.
- 0:03Where we talk all. Things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It. All starts right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Three O Take presented by Sea Kick.
- 0:18This is for episode 495 of your host Kyle Corden.
- 0:21I'm here with my Co host Nate Reyes.
- 0:25Nate. The news we finally been waiting
- 0:34for, well, maybe not you, maybe not you, my friend, but the news
- 0:40we've all been waiting, waiting for has finally, has finally
- 0:46arrived. Juan Soto is a New York Mets 16
- 0:59years, 15 years, $765 million, and he hasn't even said a word.
- 1:11He hasn't even said a word 15 years, 765, that whole, the
- 1:20whole like, hey, let's make it. Why don't we just make it a
- 1:22billion joke? We were.
- 1:24We were. Getting.
- 1:25Dangerously close if this if this thing would have went on
- 1:29two 3-4 more days. What's just happened?
- 1:36Contract in sports history. For a guy that wasn't even the
- 1:41best hitter on his team this year, No, I'm not going to.
- 1:44We're not, we're not going to go.
- 1:47We're not going that route. We're not going that route.
- 1:49I'm not. I've had I've, I've had plenty
- 1:53of fun already playing both with a foot in each camp this whole
- 1:59this whole offseason. I I'm, I'm very much in the camp
- 2:03of like this seemed like quite the overpay, But then when
- 2:07people, when people are like, yeah, this guy sucks.
- 2:10I'm like, no, you're wrong. He's actually a generational
- 2:12hitter. It's, it's been great.
- 2:14I've just don't really have a dog in a fight here.
- 2:17I'm just sitting here playing both camps.
- 2:18It's been, it's been a joy. Sure, sure.
- 2:22But you. On the other hand, to lose your
- 2:24to lose the just out of your. Out of your grasp.
- 2:29I, I mentioned this multiple times.
- 2:36I'm OK with it. Like I'm actually OK.
- 2:41I, I think that we, we saw on the biggest stage what the New
- 2:49York Yankees were, Could they have played better in the World
- 2:54Series? Of course.
- 2:55Did they have, you know, were they capable of more?
- 2:57Of course. But every Yankee fan that didn't
- 3:01have his head in the clouds saw the the truth of what that
- 3:07Yankee team was, and that's with Soto, and that's with Soto
- 3:11having a really good postseason. I think it doesn't it doesn't
- 3:21get solved by by spending 700 + 1,000,000 on a guy like the the
- 3:28issues are still there if they bring him back.
- 3:31So I've been in the camp that I'm OK with the Yankees missing
- 3:35out. I think, you know, Spencer
- 3:39brings up a good point in the chat is that, you know, is there
- 3:44is there a regret trading for Soto?
- 3:48No, I, I'm, I'm, I'm going to say no.
- 3:51I think, you know, overall, like it hurt losing Michael King, but
- 3:56overall, like, I, I think it was worth it.
- 4:00Like they, they gave themselves a chance.
- 4:02They played in the World Series. Did they play well?
- 4:04No, but they gave themselves a shot and maybe didn't calculate
- 4:12the fact that you were giving Soto a taste in New York when
- 4:21the Mets were going to pay more and, and they clearly did.
- 4:26So I I think, I think the writing was on the wall here and
- 4:32I'm OK. I think, I think Yankee fans
- 4:34should be OK. I think you're exactly right,
- 4:36the writing was on the wall and I feel like an idiot for
- 4:40thinking for for at any point. Did you hold out this little
- 4:44hope? Oh, I was.
- 4:45It did. I woke up today.
- 4:48I was like, today is the day we sign Juan Soda.
- 4:52I I'm so upset with myself for even think even remotely
- 4:57thinking there was a chance that he was going to end up with
- 4:58anybody else and end up with anybody else except the Mets.
- 5:02Yeah, yeah. This is I mean.
- 5:06We knew this was going to happen And and to your, to your point,
- 5:09you've been, you've been sort of the ringleader here on this.
- 5:12But between the two of us saying that like the that that's an
- 5:17opportunity, meaning the Mets, that's an opportunity for him to
- 5:21be the guy. He no longer had it because you
- 5:23watch it play out this whole year with him being in the in
- 5:25the shadows of judge, which we've talked about many times on
- 5:28this podcast. But it's it's an opportunity for
- 5:32for him to go be the guy. And people can throw around the
- 5:35name Francisco Lindor all they want.
- 5:38We don't need to have that conversation.
- 5:40No, this, this right here. You don't, you don't pay
- 5:44somebody 700 and and what, sixty $65 million?
- 5:49You don't pay somebody that to be your number two guy.
- 5:53You don't, you don't pay $765,000,000 to a guy so he can
- 5:57be your B player on your billboard.
- 5:59No, he's the guy. Correct, Correct.
- 6:04Yeah, look, I've said it in the past, like the the opportunities
- 6:13were just it checked. It checked every box.
- 6:15The Mets checked every box. You know, they were willing to
- 6:19meet the overall total of what he was looking for.
- 6:23They're willing to meet the AAV total that he was looking for.
- 6:28They have the ability to spend money and build around him for
- 6:35the foreseeable future. There's, and I mean no
- 6:40disrespect, but like when you look at Yankee history versus
- 6:44Met history, I'm not trying to be a hater here, but like Tom
- 6:51Seaver, David Wright, Keith Hernandez, like that, those are
- 6:55what come to mind for me. Daryl Strawberry, I guess, like
- 7:00I just I there's not the historical Mount Rushmore names.
- 7:06And so he gets to go to a place for the rest of his career and
- 7:11and lay out his own legacy, legacy that had doesn't have any
- 7:14shadows. Legacy that allows him to be the
- 7:20cornerstone of a franchise for a decade and 1/2 and dictate
- 7:29rewrite the misery that the Mets franchise fandom front office
- 7:40players at different times have been in for a while.
- 7:45Is he going to do it single handedly?
- 7:47No, but he does absolutely command a ripple effect.
- 7:53Is he getting on the mound and throwing next year?
- 7:56No, but he absolutely is changing the course of an entire
- 8:03franchise. And what I'm, what I'm happy for
- 8:10is that the sports world is looking at baseball right now.
- 8:15This is the largest largest contract in all of sports.
- 8:19All of sports ever and. And it's, and it's because of
- 8:24him, it's because of his talent, it's because of of his age, it's
- 8:29because of the way he's played this whole thing.
- 8:32And this is, this is Scott Boris's Mona Lisa.
- 8:41The The hate's going to be coming.
- 8:43The hate. Didn't be coming and now I don't
- 8:45have to defend it anymore, which is I was going to have to defend
- 8:50Why he deserves more, why he got more than Otani.
- 8:54I don't have to defend it now. No, you're smarter than that.
- 8:57I know you, you weren't you. You were going to have the same
- 9:00thoughts about it. If he if the Yankees re signed
- 9:03him for more than Otani, you would have been like this is
- 9:05stupid. I because to your point, you
- 9:08like we talked about this, this was an opportunity for a team
- 9:15that missed out on Soto, such as the Red Sox, such as the
- 9:18Yankees. I'm not even going to really
- 9:21throw the Dodgers in there, but like an opportunity to pivot
- 9:24then like, OK, you miss out on soda.
- 9:26All right, the Red Sox need to be in on Corbin Burns.
- 9:29They need the the phone already needs to be, you know, in use
- 9:34right now for it. It should have been the second
- 9:36that news dropped. Same goes for the Yankees.
- 9:39Like this isn't like this isn't groundbreaking stuff.
- 9:43We we knew that this was going to have to be Plan B for teams
- 9:46like that, but that for, for both of those teams in that
- 9:51example, Red Sox, Yankees, you can still salvage you like you
- 9:55can still come out of this offseason having done your job
- 10:01and and having done it well. Like if you go out and get 1-2
- 10:05frontline guys, you go out and get a a power bat.
- 10:08We, we've been talking about this that I, I, I, it's possible
- 10:14my tone might have been different if the Red Sox somehow
- 10:16got got Soto. But I'm almost, I would almost
- 10:22be happier if you go out and get 2 frontline guys, you go out and
- 10:25get a power bat. Yeah.
- 10:28And. Not to, not to like go towards
- 10:31numbers or analytics or anything like that, 'cause you and I have
- 10:34never been that way. But in reality, like war is WAR.
- 10:41If, if you're going to be that guy and, and say, you know, we
- 10:44got to try and find a way to win and, and, and have the most
- 10:49above average players, you can make up his WAR.
- 10:55And, and the Yankees have other holes.
- 10:59I, I think when I look at the Red Sox, I think it's a little
- 11:02bit of a blessing in disguise and in very different ways.
- 11:04But like, you know, you Fast forward 7-8 years down the road
- 11:07and now you're talking about two fairly unathletic lefties that
- 11:14are committed to that franchise endeavors and Soto that would
- 11:18need that DH spot. And that kind of takes a little
- 11:23bit of load off and and allows some freedom for Devers to slide
- 11:27into that. Naturally.
- 11:29When I look at the Yankees, let's face it, like, as as
- 11:33impressed as I am, and I hope other baseball fans are
- 11:36impressed of how well Judge held it down in center field, he's
- 11:40not a center fielder. He's a right fielder.
- 11:43He doesn't need to be trying left field for the first time
- 11:46because they resigned Soto. He's a right fielder and a
- 11:49borderline Gold Glover in right field.
- 11:51Let him be there. It's his franchise.
- 11:53He's the captain. So there's a lot of blessings by
- 11:58missing out on this. And is it a sting?
- 12:01Yeah. Are Mets fans going to be
- 12:02annoying for a while? Yeah.
- 12:05What else is new? Should they be happy?
- 12:09Yeah. I think it, I think it's
- 12:13impressive. I, I think it, I think it's
- 12:15really impressive of watching something predictable become
- 12:21reality. And for Steve Cohen to just say,
- 12:25what was that report 2 days ago? That notification came across my
- 12:30phone 2-3 days ago that the Mets, duh, the Mets will top any
- 12:34offer. And they did and they did.
- 12:37And I think they saw, I think I saw a notification to the
- 12:40Yankees offered 16 years, 760. So 5 million less one extra
- 12:47year. And that affects not just
- 12:49overall number, it affects the AAV.
- 12:52And I mean, I, I, I'm not going to try and sound like a hater
- 12:57here, but like I, I, I think we see what Soto was after.
- 13:03And there's the majority of us had the theory that it was the
- 13:08overall number and in the highest paid per year.
- 13:11And that's kind of all that mattered.
- 13:13And yeah, so I don't want to hear, I don't want to hear him
- 13:18or Boris come out at any kind of press conference or interview
- 13:21and say it wasn't just about the money.
- 13:26Yeah, that that'd. Be a That's a flow.
- 13:28I don't need to hear that song again.
- 13:29I'm about the. History of the New York come on
- 13:33come on guy, come on you're 26. We we know what this was about.
- 13:36We we knew from the beginning it was just a matter of who was
- 13:39going to be able to provide that final number for you.
- 13:42Speaking of which you mentioned the Yankees offer.
- 13:43It was reported that the Red Sox, the last slash best offer
- 13:49for Soto was 700 million for 15 years, which is is actually
- 13:53interesting, though. It brings up a a point that I
- 13:57came across and and I didn't have a chance to admittedly do
- 14:02my due diligence, but there was this tweet that had been
- 14:04floating around today from fish tastic fish fists on Twitter.
- 14:14It was it was making its round. So I'm I'm guessing other people
- 14:17had hopefully looked into it and provided some validity to it.
- 14:20And then I want to get to this question here on the chat.
- 14:24The tweet said because of NYC city tax, the Mets and Yankees
- 14:27need to outbid the Red Sox by about 4,000,000 per year to
- 14:30match the money Soto would keep. Essentially Boston can match 15
- 14:34to 7:15 for 7:35 with 15 for 675.
- 14:40If the Red Sox are over 700 million already, New York needs
- 14:43to go to 775, which is an interesting point when you take
- 14:47into account the taxes and all of that like.
- 14:50That's a part of the equation. Sure, yeah, like it's easy to
- 14:53get caught up in just the final number.
- 14:54But you have to keep in mind like, there's there's different
- 14:57facets at play here and and it you know, it may or may not mean
- 15:01that a a team is like for the Red Sox example, you look at
- 15:07700, you go, oh, well, that's that.
- 15:09They're cheapen out. If they were really wanted soda,
- 15:11they needed to push at least 750.
- 15:13It's like, well, when you take into account the taxes and
- 15:15everything that it's like, OK, maybe maybe it was a little
- 15:18closer than that. It appears on paper.
- 15:22But this question, Speaking of the Yankees, Joe Mama in the
- 15:28chat says, do you think Soto leaving affects the legacy of
- 15:31the Yankees being top dog AKA the must play, the must be
- 15:34place? I'll be honest with you and
- 15:38correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think the Yankees have
- 15:41been like the must be place for some time.
- 15:43Like I think that I think that was out the window years ago.
- 15:47We're we're talking 1015 years. I mean, it feels like that.
- 15:50You could you could make the I mean, the Dodgers for sure.
- 15:54We know this. But yeah, I mean, you could make
- 15:56the argument and and sure, you have to have some evidence to
- 16:01back it up. But I'm just thinking of options
- 16:03that could at least be in the conversation for like a must be
- 16:08place ahead of the Yankees. Maybe not the top, but like
- 16:11maybe even head of the Yankees. But like San Diego, I mean,
- 16:15you're looking at the track record of the Yankees the last
- 16:1815 years going back to O9 Like we've like we reference.
- 16:23Philly, I mean, that's there's, there's more teams in the
- 16:26conversation now. Even Philly, that's what I'm
- 16:28saying. And I'm not like I said, it's,
- 16:30I'm not saying those are like the the top options, but New
- 16:33York, you have to think the Yankees specifically that
- 16:37they've fallen down the list of a handful of spots, I would
- 16:41think in the last 1015 years. Yeah.
- 16:43Yeah, for sure. You know they can they can cry
- 16:47they can cry poor all they want. They can cry budgetary, you know
- 16:54type mentality or strategy. It's it's it just doesn't just
- 16:59doesn't ring the same the eye. It hasn't felt that.
- 17:04I go back to O 9 and I remember to share ACC and AJ Burnett, you
- 17:10know, having their press conferences all all put on their
- 17:13jerseys. And that was like, OK, like this
- 17:16is the place. Like it.
- 17:17It feels that way and it just it hasn't felt that way since.
- 17:21And one can argue that that that was almost manufactured around
- 17:24the fact that that was the first year of the new Yankee Stadium.
- 17:28You know, I think there was a lot that had to do with that.
- 17:30But yeah, I mean, you know, again, it's it's getting
- 17:36refreshing having an owner that comes out like Steve Cohen and
- 17:45and puts his money where his wallet is and puts his mouth
- 17:48where his wallet is and, you know, says, Hey, let's double
- 17:52down. And I'm I'm willing to pay
- 17:54anything and and does it. On that note, the update just
- 18:01came through. Jeff Passan just retweeted it
- 18:04from Jorge Castillo says Soto can either opt out after the 5th
- 18:08year, which would be in 2029, or receive a $4 million raise per
- 18:13season from 51 million to 55,000,000 for the remainder of
- 18:16the contract. So that's that's what escalates
- 18:19it over 800 because I remember that was the like original
- 18:22notification 765, but could get could get over 800.
- 18:26So there it is, which is a perfect contract for it's a
- 18:32dream contract for a superstar. You're 25 and if you don't like
- 18:38what's going on, if the Mets haven't, you know, backed up
- 18:42what they told you in the in the meeting and you're 30 and you've
- 18:48won an MVP or gotten top five in a couple years, which I think
- 18:52he'll do well, now he's got to compete against Shohei for that.
- 18:56But it's it's another chance at it, you know?
- 19:03So yeah. Bro $805 million.
- 19:11Yeah. He opts in $805 million.
- 19:27What do you even do with that money?
- 19:34I I simply cannot. Is he going to buy the Dr. Can
- 19:39he? He's just buy it out, right?
- 19:42I'm curious, how much does it cost to buy the Dominican
- 19:49Republic? This feels like when Kanye was
- 19:54on a podcast and he's like, how much does the world cost?
- 19:57I want to buy Earth. If I wanted to buy Earth, how
- 20:04much do you think it would cost? My goodness dude, this is
- 20:11different man. The last week, the last I had.
- 20:14I had had an update here this last week with this Soto stuff.
- 20:17Not I'm glad it's done I'm. Glad it's done.
- 20:21And I to be quite honest with you, I'm not even I'm not Even
- 20:25so much as as mad at Soto. I'm really, I mean, I, I have no
- 20:29reason to be upset with Soto. Like Soto did what Soto was
- 20:33supposed to do in this situation.
- 20:35Like like, sure, people can sit there and say, like, what do
- 20:37you, what do you, we can sit here and question like, what do
- 20:39you, what do you even do with all that money?
- 20:41And like, we can sit here and be like, why?
- 20:43You don't need to take that much money.
- 20:44Just take, take like half of that and your fault.
- 20:47You'll, you'll be fine. He's a business asset.
- 20:52His agent told him to just hold strong and let this thing, this
- 20:57is how this always goes. These teams get into bidding
- 20:59wars. Then when you get when you get
- 21:01these egos like like Steve Cohen in the mix, who's like, yeah, I
- 21:05got a $50 million bounty on the top bid.
- 21:09Good luck. Like this number was going to
- 21:12end up at at some point near where it finally ended up.
- 21:16But it my frustration this past week and you could even really
- 21:22say last month or two as this Soto free agency narrative
- 21:26continue to build and grow was just the, the like every, every
- 21:35week we're, we're we're bumping the total, the expected total up
- 21:39like $100 million. Yeah, it wasn't going up by
- 21:4210/15/20. It wasn't going up and.
- 21:44People are just continuing to justify it.
- 21:47Every step along the way. I'm like, OK, so you're telling
- 21:49me the guy that you said dessert $500 million deserves 600
- 21:55million and then the next week hits.
- 21:57So you're telling me the guy that's you thought, OK, 600
- 22:00million is probably good. You're, you're now somehow
- 22:03trying to justify 700 million. And it just kept going and going
- 22:06and going. And that's why I can't, that's
- 22:07why I got so fed up with it. And I'm like, let's just offer
- 22:10him a billion dollars and let's get it over with.
- 22:12Because if this thing continues to stretch out, that's where
- 22:15this thing is going to end up. And so it, it, it, it was just,
- 22:19I got tired of these like these talking heads and like these
- 22:23reporters on it, all the reporters who are like, I'm not
- 22:27going to name names. There was a particular reporter
- 22:29reporter that had him sign to the Red Sox on Thanksgiving.
- 22:34And this was like 10 days ago. And there, there was so much of
- 22:42that. And I know, I know it's a lot of
- 22:44just Twitter personalities trying to throw stuff at the
- 22:46wall and seeing what sticks. And then they can claim that
- 22:49they had it. But just the there were multiple
- 22:54occasions this past week where I thought we collectively as a
- 22:58baseball community have we're certifiably insane.
- 23:02We have collectively lost our minds.
- 23:04We I don't think we understand that, that we're getting too
- 23:07swept up in this. This needs to end.
- 23:10This needs to be done because we're sitting here trying to
- 23:14justify or say that Juan Soto, a single player who again, I'm not
- 23:19being a hater, this is just fact, was not even the best
- 23:22hitter on his own team this year.
- 23:27We're saying that he he's, he's deserving of a $700 million
- 23:32contract. And I'll.
- 23:36Continue to stand by that. Soto, you've always been camp.
- 23:38So I love, I love me some Soto. You've always, always supported
- 23:42him and I think. And I can go back to supporting
- 23:45Soto now that he's on the other side of town.
- 23:47I'm sure you can. It's I, I can't now, but again,
- 23:53like I'm not like bitter about it.
- 23:54It's, it's a weird feeling. I'm, I'm actually very OK with
- 24:00how things played out. I I like the fact that I see a
- 24:03notification right away that the Yankees did everything they
- 24:06could. That's an absolutely more than
- 24:09reasonable enough offer. Adding a year being 5 million
- 24:13less. Maybe there was no opt out.
- 24:16I don't know. I don't know the structure, but
- 24:18I'm I'm OK as a Yankee fan knowing that they lost and and
- 24:26came in second. They didn't bow out at 600
- 24:29million or bow out at 6:50. They stayed until the end.
- 24:33And in reality, I'll be I'm, I think that they're going to, I
- 24:36think they're going to pop off. And I hope that maybe it, it
- 24:40sparks a little bit of like a, a little fire saying, you know
- 24:44what? We missed out and, and the
- 24:46world's looking at us like, whoa, the Yankees aren't the
- 24:50Mecca anymore. Go get two or three of these
- 24:53guys at least. Go get a Bregman, go get a
- 24:56freeder, Corbin Burns, go get it done.
- 25:00Go get a Santander. Whatever.
- 25:02It's no mystery that I hate the Yankees, but I for the sake of
- 25:05baseball, for the sake of the whole villain era, I'm going to
- 25:09need the Yankees to like, really?
- 25:11Step up and be the villain. Really put it on the table here
- 25:14and say we need to get because you look back at this past year.
- 25:19I think the reason you didn't really see that like sure, they
- 25:23end up in the World Series, obviously, but I think the
- 25:26reason you didn't really see this like the evil Empire's back
- 25:30mentality is because they knew they had to wait out this Soto
- 25:33thing because you can't you can't fully commit to the we're
- 25:37back. The evil Empire's back.
- 25:39If after this offseason you go back to the team you were before
- 25:43you had one Soto. So they were I think they were
- 25:47like tiptoe and they're sort of waiting it outgoing.
- 25:49OK, if we can get him back at A, at a couple more supporting
- 25:53pieces, the the evil Empire's back, they didn't do it.
- 25:57And so they're going to have to figure out a, A, a Plan B here
- 25:59very quickly. The long list of of players that
- 26:04the former Yankees that the Mets have brought over just gets one
- 26:08name longer, you know what I mean?
- 26:10And I it's, it's a weird little mentality thing.
- 26:14But I, I think the Yankees can go a different direction and I
- 26:16think they're going to be fine as far as the Mets go.
- 26:19I mean, look there like there's more to more to be done.
- 26:23There has to be more to to go. That rotation still needs help,
- 26:28a lot of help. Does Pete Alonso come back?
- 26:33You know what I mean? Like it you got a hole at first
- 26:35base if he's not so. I saw a tweet, I saw a tweet
- 26:38earlier that said, I don't think of Mets fans realize that in
- 26:43cheering for Soto to sign that you're essentially signing off
- 26:50on Pete Alonso being let go. Is that I don't think I don't
- 26:54think Mets fans really realize that.
- 26:56And I had to think I'm like, I mean, or if that is true, like,
- 27:01where are you? Would you be OK with that?
- 27:03Mets fans like you're getting Juan Soto, you know, like.
- 27:06Yeah, I don't know. That I would be OK with that I.
- 27:11Don't know. Good luck with Clay Holmes in
- 27:14the rotation I guess. I hopefully that pans out for
- 27:19you guys. I think I, I think I've made it
- 27:23up in my mind, you mentioned Clay Holmes.
- 27:25We, we do have, there are obviously been some moves I
- 27:28think I've made-up in my mind that we are going to have this
- 27:33be solely a, a, a subtle podcast because of because of where
- 27:37we're at at this point in the podcast.
- 27:39And then we're, we're going to do a sweet because frankly,
- 27:41nobody as exciting as like the Willie Adamus movies for the
- 27:46Giants. And frankly, quite frankly, I'm,
- 27:48I'm genuinely excited to talk about that.
- 27:51I think Soto is sort of the headliner here.
- 27:54That not to mention we're going to have a lot of Domino's fall
- 27:57between now and the right the next podcast.
- 28:00So we're going to we'll. Do a We'll do a big sweep our
- 28:04next episode, but. How do you let's get it?
- 28:09I mean, I'm I'm just trying to wrap my mind around Soto in
- 28:15Queens line up wise, defensively, you know what I
- 28:22mean? Like if if he is, I don't I've
- 28:26never really heard any reports or like ideas that he would want
- 28:32to be adh right field in the in in in Queens is a lot different
- 28:40than the Bronx. It's a lot different.
- 28:43It's a lot bigger and, you know, like a, a, a limping around
- 28:49Nimmo, who seems to be kind of the left fielder now.
- 28:53Like you got to go get somebody who can run it down in center
- 28:59and really cover some ground. I'm seeing a projected lineup
- 29:04from Fox Sports. They got Lindor at short, Soto
- 29:08and right, Mark Vientos at first, Brandon Nimmo and left.
- 29:12Starling Marte is ADH, Francisco Alvarez behind the dish, Jeff
- 29:17McNeil at second. Jose Syrian center.
- 29:20A lot of people forgot. They went out.
- 29:22They went out and got. Forgot about that, yeah.
- 29:24And then Brett Beatty at third. That's a good lineup.
- 29:28That's definitely a good lineup. I mean, it'll compete like
- 29:31that'll play. Say what you will about the Mets
- 29:34and and I know with their post season run, I think you and I
- 29:38both acknowledge it. Like maybe we're at the point
- 29:42now where we have to start putting the whole Mets going to
- 29:45Met narrative to sleep. Even just.
- 29:48Unless you're a Braves fan listening to this, they'll
- 29:52they'll die on that hill I think.
- 29:54But I mean, look, the the Mets made a lot of us eat crow this
- 29:58year. That's just the reality of it.
- 30:00And, and surely they didn't it, the season didn't end for them
- 30:03the way they would have hoped. But you do what you did this
- 30:08year, come up a little short, You follow that up with going
- 30:12out and getting Sodo. And like you said, I, I have a
- 30:15hard time believing that a guy named Steve Cohen, who again,
- 30:21had put out a $50 million bounty on the top bid is done making
- 30:26additions. I just have a real hard, hard
- 30:28time believing that that's the case.
- 30:31I'm with you. Looking at the current Mets
- 30:35depth chart for the rotation on MLB.com, we have Kodai Singa,
- 30:43David Peterson, Frankie Montos and Paul Blackburn.
- 30:52Yeah, that ain't going to cut it.
- 30:56But if. I mean, if this is what you do,
- 30:59you know, if if I think the mentality is like if we go get
- 31:03one soda. We get a double down.
- 31:05Don't forget Clay Holmes. Clay Holmes, right?
- 31:07They're slotting him in his stingers.
- 31:09Yeah, which is an interesting thought.
- 31:12But they got to keep going. Like you, you, you have to go
- 31:18all the way now. You know what I mean?
- 31:19You got to double down and start really committing to building
- 31:24this team. Juan Soda was great, but like
- 31:27it. You need more, you know, your
- 31:31team was not happy with Brett Beatty.
- 31:35Your team was wishy washy. But Jeff McNeil had a really,
- 31:42really tough year last year and missed a ton of time.
- 31:46I like Mark Vientos. I think the future is bright for
- 31:48him. Really good hitter.
- 31:52Don't know how he slots at first base.
- 31:54It's there's question marks that need to be, that need to be
- 31:58taken care of and and I fully expect them to keep going, fully
- 32:02expect them to keep going. Or will they be, you know, in
- 32:06the conversation for the rest of these top free agents?
- 32:11I don't know, but there's still some names out there that can
- 32:14that can help them out. All right, let's get real.
- 32:17For a second scale of one to 10, how likely do you think it is
- 32:21that the New York Mets land one of the two between Max Reed and
- 32:26Corbin Burns? Just one.
- 32:34Give it a four. Is that fair?
- 32:40All right? Yeah, that's fair.
- 32:41What? Do you think it the I'll, I'll,
- 32:46I'll follow up my number with a little bit of justification,
- 32:50thinking that like, I think there's going to be an overpay
- 32:54by some of these other teams just to get it done correct, To
- 32:57get it done quickly. Yeah.
- 32:58Because now that they're out of this, you know they're going to
- 33:01go after it. Yeah, shout out bridge to bucked
- 33:04over pot in the chat says Red Sox and Yankees can't let that
- 33:07happen. I absolutely agree.
- 33:08That's probably why I'd put it at A3 or A4 likelihood that they
- 33:12would land one of those. Not not because I don't think
- 33:15Steve Cohen is willing to add that to his checkbook.
- 33:23But I don't. Like you said, I don't think the
- 33:25team like the Yankees or the Red Sox, I just don't think that
- 33:31they would, they would stop at a certain point to get like
- 33:33they're going to, like you said, they're going to have to overpay
- 33:36to get one of those. It's going to suck.
- 33:38But at the end of the day, you're still not paying
- 33:41765,000,000. So maybe you look at that as
- 33:44like the bright side, we were like, well, we can go and get a
- 33:46frontline guy and we're not paying 765,000,000.
- 33:49Dollars and I personally think those deals are coming soon.
- 33:52I think all of all of those teams had offers ready to go the
- 33:57second this notification came out, the second they got, you
- 34:00know, notified that he's going elsewhere, They had these other
- 34:04deals ready to go and ready to be fired out.
- 34:07So you can't have those offers out there saying, hey, this is
- 34:11only an offer if Soto doesn't sign here.
- 34:14So, you know, I think Burns, Freed, Bregman are going to be
- 34:18getting calls this week. I could see at least two of
- 34:21those three guys going this week.
- 34:24But yeah, I mean, the Mets look like your, your mentality can no
- 34:31longer be the little brother in New York.
- 34:34You can no longer be the, you know, poor us in the NL E your
- 34:42mentality has to shift to how do we compete with the Dodgers and
- 34:45the NLCS? Then you're still not there.
- 34:49You got you got some work to do to get on their level.
- 34:55That's what's laughable about this whole thing.
- 34:56You just gave a guy the largest contract in sports history and
- 35:03the Dodgers are still sitting over there going, OK, what else?
- 35:08What else are you going to do? Because as of right now, you're
- 35:12not. You're not you're not keeping up
- 35:14with us. Yeah.
- 35:15We'll talk about, I know we'll talk about it, but.
- 35:17Like trying just. Just funny.
- 35:19That was like quickly fired out like 10 minutes later.
- 35:21But anyway, yeah, minutes. Like a minute like that was not
- 35:24that was not coincidental. That was very much intentional.
- 35:29Yeah, just like I said, I I think that I think the biggest
- 35:36take away from this is, is what I said earlier is that I'm just
- 35:41so I'll take the I'll take the the team buys glasses off.
- 35:48As a baseball fan, I'm just upset that we spent this, well,
- 35:55I'll say whole offseason. It's been what, a month plus
- 36:02month and a half? I'm just upset that we spent
- 36:05this whole time, really this whole year, because we knew,
- 36:07like we knew this was impending, this reagency was impending,
- 36:11thinking that it was going to be any other team but the Mets.
- 36:15When I saw the when I saw the text notification come through,
- 36:18I I looked at Meredith and I was like, well, there it is.
- 36:22Like I just. It wasn't even.
- 36:24I wasn't shocked. I was holding out hope that
- 36:27maybe like it that it would admittedly the Red Sox because I
- 36:32knew they were in the they were in the hunt, they were in the
- 36:33mix. But I was like, even if it was a
- 36:37Yankees, that would be more of a shock to me then then then the
- 36:42Mets. But I'm like, we really wasted
- 36:44all this time. Just we were, we weren't even
- 36:47here's the reality of it. We weren't even waiting to hear
- 36:50what team it was. We were waiting to hear what the
- 36:52total dollar amount was. It was always the Mets and I
- 36:57feel stupid for thinking that it was any other team but the Mets.
- 37:02For our friends up north, what what are the Blue Jays now?
- 37:07You know what I mean? They were never now that they
- 37:10missed out on the sweepstakes. No, no, no, no, no.
- 37:13They're still. They're still on their Plan A.
- 37:15They're on their agenda A because this was never this.
- 37:20It's not like they're shifting to Plan B now.
- 37:23Like the Red Sox, Yankees, the Blue Jays were never in on this.
- 37:26That I'm wholeheartedly convinced.
- 37:29That, that was the fact. I think Haman at one point said
- 37:33that it was the Jays and Mets, but the Yankees were in fourth
- 37:37place or whatever. Heyman that's another thing we
- 37:40haven't really touched on is how much, how much do you think the
- 37:46the whole Boris Heyman leverage game played into this?
- 37:51Do you, do we, do we think that it would, it would have, you
- 37:55know, sans John Heyman and these fake Boris burner account
- 38:01reporter tweets. Do we think that it was going to
- 38:05end up at this number just because of the nature of Steve
- 38:09Cohen? Or do we think that the do we
- 38:13think the leverage game played into this a little bit?
- 38:17Because as much as like the the, the, the thing for me is 9 times
- 38:23out of 10, looking at the situation, the way it played
- 38:26out, I'm telling you that the Red Sox were used as a pawn.
- 38:31But. I have to legitimately think
- 38:33this one time out of 10, if you ran the simulation 10 times, I
- 38:38legitimately think this one time, shockingly, that they were
- 38:43a legitimate contender. So I just, I like, I just don't
- 38:48know who was being used as leverage.
- 38:50All three teams were contenders. My theory is that leverage goes,
- 38:55the Red Sox needed to be in it to get the Yankees more in it.
- 39:01And I don't know if I give the Yankees enough credit here or or
- 39:05too much credit, I should say. But once it's it's out there
- 39:12that Steve Cohen is Steve Cohen is going to top every offer,
- 39:17Let's just drive that price up then let's just keep driving it
- 39:20up. If they're always going to top
- 39:22it, let's keep it going. Why not keep it going and make
- 39:29sure the Mets pay as much as humanly possible for him?
- 39:33And they did. I saw a lot of people saying
- 39:40which we, we sort of just said this insane that like we weren't
- 39:46waiting on to find out or we weren't waiting to find out what
- 39:48team he was choosing. It was just we were waiting to
- 39:50see how much money he would end up getting.
- 39:53How long do you think Juan Soto has known that he was going to
- 39:57play for the Mets? Like, we obviously have no way
- 40:01of actually knowing this, but like, if you just had to take a
- 40:03guess, like, let's go inside the mind of one, sort of like how?
- 40:06When do you think this was decided?
- 40:15Do you think? Can you be honest with me?
- 40:16Do you think there was even the slightest possibility that he's
- 40:21playing in the World Series for the New York Yankees?
- 40:24Thinking this is fun and all, but I'm going to be across.
- 40:28I'm going to be across town next season.
- 40:30Do you think there, do you think even in the World Series run,
- 40:33that he thought that he would end up with the Mets?
- 40:37I think for the few moments in Game 2 or Game 3, whatever it
- 40:42was where they they had a hot start to the game and they'll it
- 40:47looked like the Yankees could be an actual contend contender for
- 40:52winning this thing. Like maybe I'd like to think
- 40:55that there is a moment there and that's the other thing too.
- 40:58Like it's if, if the Yankees would have won and Soto left, I
- 41:06would have, I would have been happy.
- 41:07I would have been totally fine. This does sting a little bit,
- 41:11but I think the Yankees are going to be good.
- 41:13I think they're going to move on.
- 41:14I think they're going to do. I think this was all perfectly
- 41:19planned out. I genuinely think that the the
- 41:22Red Sox leak and and favoritism in media was to get the Yankees
- 41:29really engaged, really fired up. Boris in the media have done
- 41:34this over and over again and they're masters at it.
- 41:39Well, after this last offseason, I think we a little tip of the
- 41:45cap to Scott Boris for getting a swagger back a little bit
- 41:50because we're not talking Rich's contract in baseball.
- 41:57Yeah. All of sports.
- 42:01How do you top this? I mean, if you're Scott, Boris,
- 42:05like, does your bank even accept deposits of whatever you're
- 42:11about to deposit? I mean, what are we?
- 42:17This was a big this was a big dub for Boris.
- 42:19This was much needed for Boris. He he needed a win.
- 42:23He needed AI mean he he had the Snell deal, but like this was
- 42:26the this was the big one and he needed this man.
- 42:32What? Unreal.
- 42:36Thanks, Juan and Scott. I was going to go to bed early
- 42:40tonight. Glad it's over.
- 42:42Yeah. Glad it's over.
- 42:45Me too. We got for those dominoes, they
- 42:48coming, it's very possible. You we wake up to a deal.
- 42:54Yeah, it's true. I mean, I would almost say it's
- 42:57likely. I think, I think deals are going
- 42:59to be raining down this week. I don't think like I don't think
- 43:03we can stress enough how important it is for these other
- 43:06teams to pivot. Like you have to jump on this
- 43:10because if you don't specifically Burns and freed
- 43:16like crochet, whatever, two guys that you can just outright flex
- 43:24money on those guys like you specifically looking at those
- 43:31two pictures. And then the the you know,
- 43:34options you have position player wise, you need to just go out
- 43:39and and open up the checkbook. Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, if
- 43:43you, if you feel like giving the finger to the Mets.
- 43:48No Dodgers. All done.
- 43:51All done with the Dodgers. I wouldn't be surprised.
- 43:55I mean, we just kind of ragged on the on the Jays little bit.
- 43:58But like I said, I don't think Soto was ever Plan A for them.
- 44:01I think that was. I could see Pete Alonzo there,
- 44:04dude. I I could see them making a move
- 44:11that was that would end up being their plan A.
- 44:15They're not pivoting. They're they're still in pursuit
- 44:18of their plan A, whatever that is, whoever that is.
- 44:24I don't know, man. The American League is wide open
- 44:26now. Yeah, American League is wide
- 44:29open. The NL.
- 44:32Gauntlet. Bro, the All Star game.
- 44:34We're about to be out in Atlanta next.
- 44:36Year. Unbelievable gauntlet though.
- 44:40NL is going to be looking strong.
- 44:43I know the Braves fully healthy, obviously the Dodgers, the Mets,
- 44:49I mean the Padres, the Dodgers came out saying the Padres are
- 44:54the toughest team. They played like all the NL has
- 44:58like really, really taken off. And it's nothing against, you
- 45:03know, those AO central teams. But like, if we're talking about
- 45:08the Guardians and the Tigers and the Twins, it's like, no, dude,
- 45:12no, the Blue Jays, like no, the Mariners haven't.
- 45:17The NL is going to be running the show for a little while, I
- 45:20think. It's not the not the Major
- 45:27League Baseball we grew up with. American League ran the table,
- 45:32stays are dead. National League here.
- 45:34And again, with the size of these contracts or the lengths
- 45:36of these contracts, NL is going to be here to stay for some
- 45:40time. Scary.
- 45:44And it's all thanks. Well, thanks.
- 45:49Doing part to a lot of deals that have gone through over the
- 45:52last handful of years. But most recently the addition
- 45:54of Juan Soto to the New York Mets.
- 45:56Again, 15 years, $765 million. A lot of there's a lot of
- 46:09speculation that it would happen.
- 46:10Tonight the news broke and baseball world went crazy.
- 46:16So now we we watch the dominoes fall as they may.
- 46:24Like I said, we could wake up to some, but we shall see.
- 46:30Getting out of here. Next time you and I chat, we'll
- 46:34presumably be Wednesday or Thursday.
- 46:40Yeah. Something like that.
- 46:41We'll do a sweep of these deals that you know, happened in the
- 46:45last couple of days but we just didn't get to but.
- 46:47Definitely cover everything else if you're new here and and the
- 46:50Soto news brought you to our door.
- 46:52Welcome. Welcome to the family.
- 46:56Stick around. Yeah, we will be doing this
- 46:59twice a week for as long as time goes, as long as this contract
- 47:05goes for one Soto, we're going to be doing this twice a week.
- 47:07So rate review subscribe, hit us up, DM, send us your send us
- 47:15your thoughts. Hit us up in the in the chat
- 47:18during our live, you know, whatever you can do to to join
- 47:24the fam hop in and I don't know I'm going to bed.
- 47:31I think I think I can sleep peacefully.
- 47:33I'm OK. It's going to be a new day.
- 47:37You'll wake up. It'll.
- 47:38Be a new day. It's a whole new chapter.
- 47:40All right, I'm out of here. Don't get chasing curveballs.
- 47:43Love you and as always, looking forward to talking more baseball
- 47:45with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
