- 0:54support of our listeners. Thank you so much for your support. Well,
- 0:59actually skipped an episode last week. I played the episode I should have played
- 1:04this week. However, I think it all works out okay because today's episode
- 1:11has a very special guest star, and as this is the eight hundredth episode
- 1:15of the program, maybe it's appropriate and a uh taste of what may well
- 1:22be coming in just a few months. Anyway, here from March twenty third,
- 1:26nineteen fifty four is the classified Killer Matter. Oh y'all listening enjoyment,
- 1:34Don lund As Johnny Dollar, how could you have me four in the morning?
- 1:42Sorry, this is all right. Eastern and E's new branch manager in
- 1:47Chicagle, Engratulations and good night. Wait a minute, Dollar, I need
- 1:49you out here right away. It's about Frank Harvey. A lot of your
- 1:53claiming I worked on a lot of cases with him in Well, you won't
- 1:57work on anymore. He's been I'll think the first plane out. Mind if
- 2:10I got into say something fellas, it won't take too long, since a
- 2:15word to the wise is sufficient. And in the English language, there is
- 2:20one word which is important to just about everyone in the world. That word
- 2:24is security. Security has several different meanings. However, usually we'd think of
- 2:30it in connection with the protecting of our military installations and defense industries. But
- 2:37it means more than that. There is a security which applies to every man,
- 2:42woman, and child in America, the security which comes from being in
- 2:46good health, having a good education, and being well taken care of in
- 2:52case things get a little too tough to handle by oneself. This kind of
- 2:57security is the problem of the President's newer cabinet member, the Secretary of Health,
- 3:02Education, and Welfare. This department ties together the work of several governmental
- 3:07agencies. First, there is the United States Public Health Service, which strives
- 3:13to make certain that the general health of the people in our country is in
- 3:16the best of condition. Then there is the Food and Drug Administration, which
- 3:22guarantees that the food we eat is pure and safe to eat. The Social
- 3:27Security Board, which takes care of old people, children, and the blind
- 3:30who need assistance, also comes under the Department of Health, Education, and
- 3:35Welfare, as does the United States Office of Education. This office does research
- 3:39on the educational possibilities, changes, and opportunities and passes on its information to
- 3:46the various state boards of education. As you can see, the Department of
- 3:52Health, Education, and Welfare is one of the most important agencies in our
- 3:57government, assuring us, as it does, of a normal and healthy way
- 4:01of life. Expensive count submitted by a special investigator, Johnny Daughter to Home
- 4:18Office East and Indempnathy and Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is
- 4:24an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the classified killer matter. Expensive Count
- 4:32adam one seventy one dollars and thirty cents air fare and incidentals between Hartford and
- 4:38Chicago. I was greeted at the airport by Ted Albright and one of Chicago's
- 4:43winter bizzards. Sorry about this loudy weather. Dollar will slow us up?
- 4:47Funny, Oh no hurry, I'm a good good time to fill me in
- 4:50on Frank Harvey. Now I can tell you everything I know in about a
- 4:53half a minute. It wasn't even a town when it happened. The wife
- 4:56and I were visiting her folks in Milwaukee. The police trace me there this
- 5:00morning. What do they said? He all lousy drivers think they own the
- 5:02whole road. Yeah, what did the police said it? Well, Frank
- 5:05was apparently at the office until a quarter of seven last night. That's when
- 5:09the night elevator man signed him out in his book. He left the later.
- 5:14A truck ter, ever, found his body half buried in the snow
- 5:15drift down on Mannheim Road near the northwest city limit. He's been shot three
- 5:19times at close rain. And that's all I know. I don't know very
- 5:23much. Watch what you're joining, all the stupid morons. Everybody thinks he
- 5:28can drive a car. You're kind of on edge. Well, who wouldn't
- 5:31be. This thing happening to Harvey driving back to Chicago in the middle of
- 5:34the night, no sleep. Oh, I'm sorry, Dollar, I just
- 5:38it all piled up on me. I suppose you want to go right to
- 5:41our office here now, I'll check with the police first. You want to
- 5:44drop me off shore. By the time we got down to eleventh in space,
- 5:54the snowflowers were out in full courts. I went up to homicide where
- 5:58I met Lieutenant French. A blizzard likeness always cuts down the crime incidence,
- 6:02right, Collin Comas had toticularly he'll be rising that some natural causes and Yakee
- 6:08dec that's not much more artic. But Yankee dec yeah, and I freeze
- 6:13favorite cold weather drink of the bums on West Madison. They dran it from
- 6:15the radiators a park card. It's pretty leasable here, Oh thank you.
- 6:24They want to know what we got on Frank Harvey? Do you that's the
- 6:26general idea that we picked up a little more dope since we talked to a
- 6:30bright looks like Harvey was murdered while trying to sell his car. How do
- 6:33you figure that we've been running and classified at in one of the evening papers
- 6:36for the last couple of nice there's a copy of it than but sale fifty
- 6:44three Cadillac convertible, perfect condition on excessories reasonable. How does this tie in?
- 6:49According to one of the mechanics, in the garage where have he kept
- 6:53his car? He met a prospective buyer there last night. He heard him
- 6:57discussing the car, and then Harvey and the man got in drove off.
- 6:59I was about five to seven. The mechanic give you a description, yeah,
- 7:01pretty detailable. Didn't catch his name though, because he were checking over
- 7:04the mud books right now. That's the mechanics man. Yeah, we'll say
- 7:08good so far he's drawn a blank anyway. At eight thirty seven last night,
- 7:13we clocked in a call from a truck driver punning from a pay station
- 7:15on on Mannheim Road. He found harving in the snow banks. He was
- 7:18shot to that. Yeah, three bulletgoons, two sluts still inning. Third
- 7:21one's missing thirty eight caliber. The landing groove marks are quitting up to identify
- 7:26the gun if we ever find it. What about the car? I mention
- 7:30without an ap B with a description of a man on a journal pickup on
- 7:32the car and no, look so far? How do you see it?
- 7:34Pretendant? Oh? I guess there's somebody figured out a cheap way to get
- 7:38himself a good automobile. Oh that's it, thought, that's pretty routine from
- 7:42here on in. Not that much you can do that help? No,
- 7:44maybe not, pretendant, But I'd like to stick around, but sure nothing.
- 7:47I should probably nice get in front, shutting now y'ah sent him.
- 7:57No good you dressed again? Yeah, I got it? Thanks? Would
- 8:05you like to take a ride on him? Where to Night High Road?
- 8:07I just found Harvey's card. It took us some forty five skidding minutes to
- 8:18make our way through the storm out to a beer and a Hamburger. Joined
- 8:20on Nnheim Road. A prectinct car and a handful of reporters were already there
- 8:24when we arrived. A detective side and filled us in on the background.
- 8:28Y'll know this place came out about an hour ago to open up, Lieutenant.
- 8:31She saw the car parked out there in the parking martin Boom in Splint.
- 8:35Carvey's car, all right, been out here a long time, all
- 8:39that snow pile in it? Yeah, yeah, no doubt about where how
- 8:45they got shot? With all those bloodstains on the seat. Huh? Are
- 8:50you sure that mechanics said it was a man? Harvey drove off with rest
- 8:54man. Didn't give you a different idea as a woman. Compact back here
- 8:58on the floor, expect the gun at him. Two three dollars and eighty
- 9:07cents cab fare back to your offices in downtown Chicago. We got nowhere talking
- 9:11to the Beard joint owner. Am I weren't any more physical clues in the
- 9:15car to do anything, But I think it may be Ted Albright could That
- 9:20doesn't make sense? Donin? Why not? Well, you said the garage
- 9:22McKenny saw Frank drive away with a man. How do woman get into the
- 9:26picture? Oh? I thought maybe you could help us with that. Me.
- 9:30Oh, you were Frank's boss, you must They got to know him
- 9:31pretty well. Oh sure, sure, But what's that got to do with
- 9:35this woman? Oh? Did he have any girlfriends? Anybody in particular did
- 9:37he went around with? Oh? No, not that I know. I'm
- 9:41sure he didn't. A young single guy making a good salary driving a fifty
- 9:46three Catillac convertible and he didn't have any girlfriend. Well I didn't mean it
- 9:50that way. Sure he did, but there wasn't anybody in particular, I
- 9:54know love a woman involved in any recent adjustments either. Oh, you've been
- 9:58going through Harvey's claim files. Yeah, I thought it might be a good
- 10:00idea. Didn't come up with anything. No, what about life and chance?
- 10:05And I talked to him about that. All he was saying it ten
- 10:09thousand GI. Mother was a beneficiary motives there and lets like the police were
- 10:15right, and somebody was up trying to get himself a cart If you get
- 10:18a don yeah sure? Hello, hey, yeah is he in George Company?
- 10:28Where that fello working with you? That's right? Who's this? Well?
- 10:33What I want to do is uh, two guys willing to pay something
- 10:37for finding the diet will done it? You know something about him? I
- 10:41know money, mister, yeah, money, but I ain't telling that.
- 10:45Well, I'll get paid for it. Not that I don't believe I have
- 10:48a faire he said, who he's doing? But there's a few bucks.
- 10:54Fine, Well, I got to make a living these days, you know.
- 10:56Yeah. Sure, suppose we get together and talk it over. No,
- 11:01I wouldn't want to do that, minister, unless I was pretty sure
- 11:03we're making a deal. Not that I ain't on the side of the law,
- 11:07aren't you understand? But it ain't too easy for a guy to get
- 11:11all these days? What a high living or all? If you have information,
- 11:16you've got a deal. Now, where do we get together that I
- 11:18want to chill you for anything? Mister? Yeah? Yeah, Where do
- 11:26we get together? Well? Now, my name is Jackers. I'm the
- 11:31room clers at the Biloxi Hotel. Where is that well, it's just uh,
- 11:37wells and grand No, I ain't trying to channel or anything, just
- 11:41to be right there. Expenci count Atom three a dollar and twenty five fence
- 11:50cap there to the Biloxi Hotel expensive count Atom four twenty dollars to help the
- 11:56room clerk Martin Packer combat the high cost of living, two principal items of
- 12:01which were obviously garlic and bourbon. That's your name right there, rode on
- 12:05the register. Miss Almaccarter, she called himself. He checked in here around
- 12:11nine to thirty last night. I try all kind of scared and frightening looking
- 12:16noticed some steams on her coat feet looked like blood to me. Oh,
- 12:20not to desend in my business. I just give the room and collect the
- 12:24money. That's all I'm paid for. A well, uh, when she
- 12:28come out here in the lobby ever a couple of hours and so to listen
- 12:31to the news podcast on the radio there, and uh, and when she
- 12:37wanted me to go out and buy the papers for him, and three or
- 12:39four times, well I started wondering about things very true. Yeah, Well,
- 12:46when I heard the news about that woman's compact being found in the car
- 12:50at kind of clints things bigger than I better calls us. She's in room
- 12:56fourteen. I tried fourteen. Uh, you will find it right streak.
- 13:13Yes, you're miss Carter. I'd like to talk to you. Who are
- 13:18My name is Donna, insurance investigator. All right, thanks. What it's
- 13:31all about, mister Dolla? Nothing gonn to prove strangers room? Then you
- 13:33have to talk with you. Let's get one thing straight first. You're wrong
- 13:37about our being strangers. I've never seen you before. No that I've seen
- 13:43you, or at least your pictures. Yeah, on the desk of the
- 13:48Chicago Manager for Eastern Indemnities on there. That's right, missus. All right.
- 14:15You know many great men have attained the highest office in our land,
- 14:18the presidency of the United States. Can you guess the name of this man?
- 14:22He was president longer than anyone else, probably no other president since Lincoln
- 14:26had as many friends and enemies. During his administration, many beneficial measures became
- 14:33law, such as unemployment compensation and social security. During a serious banking crisis,
- 14:41he reassured the people by declaring, all we have to fear is fear
- 14:45itself. When he was sixty three of brain hemorrhage, put an end to
- 14:50one of the most controversial administrations in art history. If you don't have his
- 14:54name by now, here's one more clue. He was the first to broadcast
- 14:58the civil called Boyers Chat. Who was he? Franklin Delano Roosevelt, thirty
- 15:03second presidents of the United States? His life is part of your American heritage.
- 15:18And now, with our star John Lund, we bring you the second
- 15:22act of your two Lads, Johnnie Dollar. Under the proper circumstances, Missus
- 15:39Ted Albright could have been a very attractive woman. Under the circumstances in which
- 15:43I am at her, he didn't come even close to making a grade.
- 15:48You know who I am? No, I'm Ted. You were with Frank
- 15:52Harvey last night? Yea, and he was killed? Yes? What happened
- 15:56Missus Albright? Figurette free? Yeah? Sure thanks and ran out a couple
- 16:04of hours ago. Didn't help my nerves in Yeah, thanks to health.
- 16:11Oh if what happened, miss ab No, Frank is going to give a
- 16:17prospect. Arrived in the car last night, King five mine going along pretty
- 16:22friendly with Frank? Will you pretty good? Your husband know that you had
- 16:26this paper? No, Ted thought I was visiting my folks to Milwaukee it's
- 16:30going Frank picking me up the moon inputs with the insurance. So's about that
- 16:37this other man was in the car, Yeah, Frank, thanks to Frank,
- 16:41you got it beat between him in the door. Good Frank. In
- 16:44addition mentioned man's name, Yeah, with the kind of a mumble. I
- 16:48didn't get it. Okay. What happened then? Well, man, as
- 16:52Frank did mind driving out from his house so he could have his wife up
- 16:56at the car. He didn't give these back, addressed to old Frank to
- 17:00drive out manharn roads. We were driving along a lonely stress of roads and
- 17:06the mantel Franca flew over the side and stop. You hadn't done in the
- 17:08hands francasting what the idea was, and the man laughed and kind of a
- 17:15crazy way called the triggers. What happened then? It didn't kind of blur
- 17:22after that. I think I screamed, tried to get out of the car.
- 17:27I know I saw to the ground, and I got to my feet
- 17:30and started running. The man chases I don't know. I skept on running,
- 17:36and when I saw that old shot down the road, I ran behind
- 17:38the hid it sis I favored. Then some time later I got a lift,
- 17:45my passing motorists keeping me into town. Man and I came here.
- 17:51You've been here ever since? Yeah? Why didn't you call the police when
- 17:55you got into town? Don't you realize what happened? I was out with
- 17:59a man, and who wasn't my husband involved in the murder? I couldn't
- 18:03tell anyone, my only chance to avoid being involved in the scandal. Tend
- 18:07to understand that. No, I can't, and I don't think Frank Harvey
- 18:11could either. After Missus Allbright told her story to Lieutenant Francetti and a police
- 18:21stenographer, she was booked and held as a material witness. Then Franccetti sent
- 18:26out to pick up for Ted Albright. That looks like it's boiling done.
- 18:30Tell tell us husband HER's a gun to knock off his left boyfriend. It's
- 18:33a classics pattern. Yeah? Maybe what about that garage with Canning Zig?
- 18:37Yeah you haven't. He left with the mug book. Yeah, came up
- 18:41with three that he said, look pretty close. All x COM's long records
- 18:45for running them down. Now, how does missus Allbright's description of the killer?
- 18:48If not too close? I shouted the mark and she said no,
- 18:52nothing. She would whine, Oh, once we got the guy who put
- 18:55the finger on her husband, that will be a stinking nurse. Well,
- 18:59it's not a exactly a reminiscent of a rose right now. It looked like
- 19:07routine police procedures from then on end. So when a friend Chetti's men drove
- 19:11me to the palmer House and I checked into my room, I was looking
- 19:15forward to a hot shower. But I didn't quite make it. Johnny Dollar,
- 19:22I've got to talk to you where you come on up, come in.
- 19:37We're thoulland dollars at the police got yeah material with it. I gotta
- 19:42pick up up for you too. For me? Why should hey, wait
- 19:48a minute, did the police think that I killed Frank Harvey or hired because
- 19:51I wanted to do it? But that's incredible, It's insane. If a
- 19:53new album I was seeing Franklins, well, I suspected it. Yes,
- 19:57I wasn't sure. I'm pretty sure she was up with Frank last night.
- 20:00That's why you went up to Milwaukee to check on her story about going to
- 20:03visit her parents there. Yes, I did, but I didn't get there
- 20:07until almost ten o'clock. And that's the first I really knew she wasn't there.
- 20:11Don't you see dollars? That's my alibi. The police won't think so
- 20:15I don't care what the police think. It's all them. I'm worried about
- 20:18down there in some stinking lots and sell. There's got to be some way
- 20:21of getting this mess straightened up. I know what the first step is.
- 20:22What's that You're going to turn yourself in? Expensive? God? Five two
- 20:32dollars and twenty five tens kept there from the Palmer House the police headquarters at
- 20:36eleventhon State, where I dropped off all Bright and care up with ten and
- 20:38Franchetti, and then went out to the garage where Frank Harvey and kept his
- 20:42card. I found the man I wanted in a paint buo the career of
- 20:48the second floor. Big, I'm looking for Will Zeger. That you What
- 21:03can I do for you? My name is Dollin have an insurance investigator.
- 21:07Yeah, so I might ask you a few questions. Oh hey, I
- 21:11get it, MAC insurance investigator. Yeah, that guy Harvey, he was
- 21:15in the same racket, wasn't you know the guy who got killed? Yeah,
- 21:18that's right. It was rough guy getting himself bumped off that way,
- 21:22real rough. I was standing right there when he in a joke of a
- 21:26dunnet rove off in him. Yeah, that's what I wanted to talk to
- 21:29you about. Yeah, sure, you'd glad to tell you what I can.
- 21:33But I already gave that lieutenant what's his name, Frank Chetty? Yeah,
- 21:37yeah, I already gave him all the time. I picked out two
- 21:41or three guys from that Rose Gallery book that looked like the joker I've seen
- 21:44it? Had you ever seen that man down here before? Oh? I
- 21:48couldn't swear it, Mac, I don't think I ever seen a guy before.
- 21:51And now what about Ted Offering? Oh, head offering? He was
- 21:55Harvey fo ever see him down here? All right? All right? That
- 22:00the name don't mean anything. Mac. Could be he's accustomer here, but
- 22:03I never run across him. Okay, let's get back to this man who
- 22:07drove off with Harvey. Man. If you know there's anything strange about him,
- 22:11anything different, but toot him. No, that's a problem. Like
- 22:15I call that lieutenant. You never can tell about them kind of jokers.
- 22:18What kind you know what? I'm cycles? Like that guy? Oh you
- 22:22figure he's a cycle? Oh, sure has to be. I got it
- 22:26all figured out. Yeah, I look Well, here's a guy sees an
- 22:30ad in the paper car for sale, so he figures who'll meet the guy
- 22:33who run the ad? Drive out on someone, always stretch a road,
- 22:37bump him off, and make away with the car. Just always sense.
- 22:40Why not any guy who's in the hot tops don't go through all that problem
- 22:45and letting people see him. Besides, he picks out some nice looking je
- 22:48lackey hot on his fleet, picks a lot, jumps the addition, h
- 22:52clean whatever. Yeah, I get what you mean, but this guy,
- 22:56I don't do it that way. He puts himself in his where I can
- 23:00see him. And even worse, when Hobby picks up that dame in front
- 23:03of that insurance building, he don't back out of the day. He bumps
- 23:07Hobby off with one perfectly good witness sitting right there deciding a guy has to
- 23:11be a cycle. It seems to make sense that be sure, I got
- 23:15it all sick. And look when that lieutenant what's his name, frant Yeah,
- 23:21franch shetty, when he picks up them three guys like with a finger
- 23:23wrong, all he's gonna do is find out which one's recycle that will be
- 23:27the guy he's got. Look I gotta get back on the job. Guy
- 23:30wants to find five to safternoon, And I hope I helped you out.
- 23:33Mac. Yeah, I'll let you know. Expense to God on him sick
- 23:45A dollar and eighty five cents cab fare back to police headquarters. But I
- 23:48had a talk with Alma Albright, mister dollar. That's right, IDA have
- 23:56to do that, and he didn't never any to do with it. I'm
- 23:57not too interested right now. Know what happens to you or did No?
- 24:02I don't say that man who killed Frank? Do you have any idea what
- 24:07kind of work he did? Word? Yes, Did he say anything about
- 24:11what he did, who he was, or where he lived? No?
- 24:12No, nothing. I mean Frank talks about with the car. Was there
- 24:17anything peculiar about his hands or his clothes or anything like that? No?
- 24:22No, nothing, Wait a minute, his clothes? Yeah? What about
- 24:25him? It was a kind of a sweet older I noticed, like nail
- 24:30polished remover. Maybe, yes, that's a nail polish remover. How did
- 24:34you know? Does that any means do with Franks? There? I'm not
- 24:37sure. Expense accunt item seven A dollar and eighty five cents cab fare back
- 24:48to the garage. Leigler had finished the paint job and had punched out to
- 24:52the day expensive count item eight two dollars to ninety five cents cab fair to
- 24:56a rooming house out on the west side of town. Hi, Hi,
- 25:08nic Mayan man, Thanks, what brings you out this way back? There's
- 25:15something to turn up about that joker who bumped your insurance. Then I wanted
- 25:18to talk to you about the theory of yours, dearie. Oh all you
- 25:22mean about the guy being a cycle? Yeah? Yeah, I think you've
- 25:26got something man, Oh yeah, sure, sure I have it. Tagus
- 25:30say. Look, I was just getting some clothes together to take down to
- 25:33the cleaners. You might if I go ahead with it while we talk.
- 25:34No, no, go right ahead. Thanks about that cycle. Yeah,
- 25:40that's the only thing that makes sense about the whole business, you know,
- 25:42him knocking off your girls, your friend with a girl in the car,
- 25:45and all I thought of another angle about the girls. He might have had
- 25:51some plans about her. Who yes, right, never thought of that.
- 25:55If I didn't know, and don't tell her what a cycle will do.
- 25:57We're pretty girls concerned. Huh. How do you like this jacket? Max?
- 26:04Some class? Huh? Shut me back to see them. You kind
- 26:07of go for classic clothes, don't you, big? Oh yeah, you
