Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to everyone the critics.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The show where a guest picked a movie rated below 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and tells us why critics got it wrong.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Yannis Cove, a formerly pretentious film school student.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: My guest today is comedian, writer and producer Mariana Fajer.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Hi.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: It's been a busy day, but I hope I'm still I still have energy left for uh to be like a good guest at a podcast.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I'm very low energy anyway, so I think we both had to bring up energy today.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, so you you you had the special distinction of being a return guest, technically.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, how many episodes are in, and I'm already a return guest.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So we recorded we we did record an episode on Hudson Hawk and uh we had some audio issues on both of our ends, so I don't know if that will ever see the light of day, but I'm trying to make it something that we release one day.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: I think I think like if you can't release it uh at some point, I think we should re-record it because I think there's so much to talk about Hudson Hawk and so much to defend that I I don't mind doing it again.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I'll talk about it again.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: I think I'm still gonna be of the same opinion, but uh but this one today you picked um the Matrix Revolutions.
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I have to say I'm very surprised it has such a low rate rating on Rotten Tomatoes for many reasons that we'll get into.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: But I'm surprised it's under 40%.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: I'm truly I'm not surprised.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Um I'm surprised it's the lowest of the three, but I'm not surprised that it's low.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Because I don't think the second one is that great either.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:02SPEAKER_02: We can also go into that because I've watched a trilogy over the weekend uh because I commit to to stuff, and I thought I can't uh just watch the third one without remembering the other two fully.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I haven't yeah, I I I love the first one.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I Yeah.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I remember liking the second one, but I don't remember any I didn't remember anything about the third one uh until I watched it just now.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And but like uh it's interesting.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Like the second one, I just remember on reflecting about it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I I think I was just like buying into the hype of it being another matrix movie, and like I was 15 years old and was so excited to have like a new Matrix movie out, or and just like, oh it has to be good because it's another Matrix movie.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And then by the time it got to the third one, I was like, okay, they're not that great now, I can admit it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I disagree, but yeah, I like how I the all of them were occasions that I like I went to the cinema to purchase on purpose.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I didn't watch them in my hometown.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: I went to the big cinemas cause it was like a real occasion.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: Especially the first one.
- 3:17SPEAKER_02: But yeah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Especially the first one.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: The first one already had like a big hype.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Uh when it went and I think it probably premiered not that long after in America, but I remember it having like a big hype.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: It was sold out.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Um and yeah, because like I was now like it's just the idea that I was a big Keanu Reeves fan.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Uh back then, because I'm like, you know, I'm I'm ahead of the curve.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Ahead of the curve.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: And Keanu Reeves, when we used to like play houses when I was like a kid, uh, we used to choose like a famous person to be our husband.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: And Keanu Reeves was always always mine.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: So you know, I'm ahead of the curve.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: But were you so were you like a huge Bill and Ted fan or like a huge Dracula fan?
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Or yeah, Dracula was probably it, and I like bla uh what's point blank.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, point blank as well.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, and speed.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: So like maybe maybe he had the hype.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, all right.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: He probably did have the hype behind him then.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: But like now he's kind of like come back in a big way.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: And I like I've just like I've watched to actually The Matrix, I didn't watch it all in one day.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Uh I watched it over three days.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I did watch John Wick uh recently and I watched the three movies in one day.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: So just like, you know.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: We're on lockdown.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: It's not like uh I had any anywhere else to be, but yes, I did it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Those are still John Wick uh the John Wick trilogy are still a series of films I have not seen.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: Do, because they're good.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: I know I love them.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I know, I I know I love them as well.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Uh so what is your history with this specific matrix then?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Do you remember what so I guess you saw it when it first came out?
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: I did see it when it first came out.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: I remember like one of the things about the Matrix that apparently I hear they didn't work very well, but I remember it as like a huge cool thing was the fact that it was um what's the word?
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: Uh over different platforms.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: So in between the movies, things will happen online.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Um I never did the games because I think there were games.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, the games were gonna be a good thing.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: The games were pretty fun from what I remember, but like now I look back and the reviews aren't like great.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So like maybe they weren't good.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: But I remember I remember like we had uh uh like a password to get into the website where we'd get more information, and I remember really being into that, and like I will buy the magazines, like the cinema magazines that talked about it, and I yeah, like I just loved it.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: And I know that at the time the s the sequels weren't as well receiv received, but I don't know.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: I think I've always been a little uh kind on sequels, especially after like a first movie is The Matrix, which like kind of revolutionized everything.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: You can't expect the sequels to be as good, I guess, or as revolutionary because the revolution already happened, even though this movie is called Matrix Matrix Revolutions.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: The revolution already happened.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: So uh yeah, so this is the this was also interesting because it came out like it was filmed back to back with uh reloaded, and it came out what six months after?
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: I think the f yeah, March and November, I think.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is crazy.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Like I you don't get that.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Even even now when it's like um they'll split you know like Hunger Games or Twilight or whatever into or Harry Potter into two parts or something.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: It's still like a year still like every still like a year apart.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: So I guess like um and also that f I read that they released um it was released worldwide at the exact same time, so like 6 a.m.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: in LA and whatever it is to Australia like I guess so every everyone got it except like avoiding spoilers.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like that many spoilers.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's because it's like 2003 and That's a different time for the internet.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: That's not you're not gonna get the same amount of spoilers you get now.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: But true, but I think like the Wachowskis and all that um like the the setting the matrix is in and like the that uh sub uh culture, like they're like computer people, they're computer display.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Uh so I guess maybe in that uh subculture people all already be like talking to each other about things.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that is true.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Uh they were ahead of their time.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: They were very ahead of their time.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: I will say I will say this a lot apparently today, ahead of their time.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: They were I'll admit they are very ahead of their time.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Uh so like this so I'm gonna s I'm gonna say this straight off the bat.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna get so much wrong, probably, in this movie, because there's so much to it, and it's the third part of a very dense trilogy.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: There's like a lot of ideas in these three movies that yeah, get a little bit lost.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: I've also like I hadn't watched the the movies in a long, long time.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: I don't remember when was the last time I watched them.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: So, like I did watch them now, uh but I will then maybe probably I will also like not remember stuff.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: I made I also like I made notes and I tried to I was watching it with subtitles to make sure that I got people's names and things and I think I still missed out some stuff.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Um How do we explain so like the Matrix itself is it's a movie about it turns out there's a there's a the world we're living in now is not the it's not a real world, it's a simulation.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: And we are actually living in it's all like computer-based and we're all plugged into the matrix uh uh of whatever that means itself.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: It's like we are how do we how do we explain this?
- 9:36SPEAKER_02: It's all false.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: It's all it's all like happening within uh a computer, I guess that's how I I see it.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Because there everyone it's either a program or a person that's plugged in and their conscience is inside the thing because the world is uh that but then there are a few rebels, so yeah, that's where it comes in.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: The rebels don't want to be uh fed like they want to be unplugged from the matrix.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: They don't want to to because there's like another yeah, since I've watched them all, I think this is right in the first movie where like one of the rebels decides that he's going to betray all the other rebels.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: I can't remember his name, uh because he's tired of not like even if it's not real, he prefers to believe the smell of that steak is real and that steak is tasting is real, rather than live in a grey world where the all their jumpers have holes in them.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: That's the other thing, they're all wearing like the most hipster jumpers.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: In the real in their in their real world, when they're unplugged.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: Um and then they're all wearing the most like cool uh wow outfits when they're in the inside the matrix.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I disagree with cool.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: I had like my sister had a long leather jacket that I stole after she stopped wearing it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Because even after the Matrix, it was still cool.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: It's and I wanted that those sunglasses forever and I never got them.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: It's like 90s EuroPop.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: That's what it reminds me of.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's cool.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: They're they were cool.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: They have cool uh like hair.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: It was co okay, so like uh alright, maybe the first one.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: It's cool.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: By the time it gets around to the third one, it's still cool today, Yanis.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Don't don't Okay, I expect to see you out dressed like that then.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Yes, uh if I have uh money for to like I like colour, that's the only thing.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I like colour, but yeah, the black is really cool.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: I guess I could uh dress like uh Monica Bellucci in the third movie when she's in red.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, either that or the she's she's in the white in the second one, isn't she?
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, but white is not I'm I don't do well with white, so red.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: I'm going to get you next time you'll see me, I'll be in uh full like red leather, fetish skin uh dress.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: And with the gl but with the glasses without the uh Yes, exactly.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: But they're just like glasses that sit on your nose.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because there's like way a lot of I don't know, are they good?
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: I don't know how they because even like normal glasses sometimes are hard to wear.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: So you know.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: But anyway, this third movie Will will those glasses uh steam up with masks?
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: I wonder more so.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Yes, okay.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, I I will take your word for it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Um so uh this movie itself uh how like can you help lead in the second one into this one?
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Because I can't remember the second one.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh so in the second one, um Neo has uh completely uh went above and beyond his powers uh or whatever they are because they're not really powers.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: He like flies like Superman and stuff like that, uh just because the matrix is not real, right?
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: So he has a lot of uh powers within the matrix because the matrix is not real.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: But the like Smeed comes into the real world.
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: Not s it's not Smeed, it's like the Squid uh monsters things, not monsters robots, the Squid Robot things that I can the real world and he manages to like do a came camea sort of thing and kills all the sentinels because everyone's gonna know what yes, that's Dragon Ball, and I I've never watched it.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: I've watched like a couple of episodes, but I know the references, so I think everyone needs to know the references.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: But yeah, like he just uses his hands and like manages to kill the sentinels with his hands in the real world, but because of that he like loses all his energy and it just collapses.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: So the second movie starts with Neo uh unconscious and they don't really know what's happening to Neo, and they're all in another ship, they're not in the Nebuchadnezzar.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: I don't know what happened to the Nabucchier, it's it probably died in the second movie.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: I didn't take notes on the first and second, so my memory I've just meant like can you help lead it in?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Like you don't have to explain the whole plot of the second one.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like there's so much to it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And I just can't remember what happened to the Nebuchadnezzar, which is the ship where uh Morpheus Trinity and Neo for are in that we've met them in.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: Uh so they're in another crew they're with another crew in another ship.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Uh there's another ship and crew that have disappeared.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: It's Niobe's uh crew and ship, and they're searching for that, and they know that um the machines are attacking because yeah.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Again, this is there's a lot from the other movies, but there the rebels have a city that's like the city that uh has survived, which is Zion.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: And the machines will arrive to Zion by midnight that day.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it's midnight, but it's by the end of the day.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: So they have to get back to Zion to protect Zion.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: But they need to find Niobi first because they need the two ships.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: And Neo isn't conscious, and there's another guy that's unconscious that we know from the pr previous movie that has been possessed by one of the Smiths or the Smith.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he looks a lot like Agent Smith, but uh it's not technically him, but it is him at the same time.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: It's weird.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: It's very confusing because he looks so much like it.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: I think like that's the thing, cause even like the other I think by this time, by this movie, all the smeeds are are Hugo Weaving.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: But in the previous movies, there's other actors playing SMEED, but they all are trying to act as Hugo Weaving does.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I guess like, yeah, you kind of exp you've you've laid into this one, uh you kind of explain what happens.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: So Neo's kind of like in a sort of like midpoint between between the real world and and the uh the the fake world, the the matrix.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Um he's in like a train station.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: The the name of the station is an acronym for a limbo, so you know it's like I can't remember the name now, but it's an acronym for a limbo.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: I did not realize that.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: The station does look really cool, and I really like that scene in the station with uh family.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a family, like they uh so it's Rama Kantra Cantra and Kamala.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: And their daughter's a little creed whose name is I heard Yeah, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: So they like they're so that they're a family and they they're the only other ones there, and they're waiting for the train to be taken away.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Uh and that so they're all waiting for the train man, they keep calling him the train man.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the train man.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Who is a program as well.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: They're all programs.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: The family are programming.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the family tell him we're a program.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: We're not real.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: And uh basically they say, like, oh, you could be here forever.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Uh we can't guarantee it.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: And then like so like Morpheus and Trinity go in search of uh Neo and because they they believe he's somewhere.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: But they go they they go to the Oracle uh Oracle to go find him.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And I can't remember what she says.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Do you remember she doesn't really say anything, but she just says something about the train man, I think.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like the I'm trying to find because I had like more stuff because the family says stuff about love that I uh noted down that I can't find now.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, because like then it's all very because there's the all the scenes are like inter uh they jump between one scene one scene and the other.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, like the family, the guy says something about love and something about karma that I thought were great things.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Love is a word, not a human emotion.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: What matters is the connection the word implies.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I wrote that I actually wrote that as well.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: And karma is another word.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: Uh and it's yeah, it's what is there to do.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Karma is like destiny, but it's just another word.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Uh and I really like that.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: That was really interesting.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: Like uh And they are trying to save like because that's another thing, because they're programs, so they're machines, they aren't supposed to have consciousness, but the two like older uh programs had a baby together.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Which is odd.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Uh and the baby has no purpose, so in in the matrix world, uh the program that program will be obsolete, but they're trying to save the baby by getting them in a train with what looks like a uh hobo.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It's the train man is is he's so he's on a train and they run into uh so Morpheus and Trinity run into him and they they're like that that's him there, and it's a it's a ho it looks like a homeless guy.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: I remember uh what's her name, the oracle, uh gives them Serif to protect them.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Because he knows what to do, and he knows so that they're like Morpheus and Trinity are with Serif when they find that guy, the train man on the station.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: And he has so many watches.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: So many and I remember would wear more than one watch.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: You would was sorry?
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: I guess that's what's be I I was wearing more than what one watch at the time.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: And I guess that's like Matrix.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I just liked the the idea of wearing more than one watch after seeing uh seeing it.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: I r I really like the word aesthetics of the Matrix, so I guess uh Oh I thought you meant uh when you watched it the other day.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Oh no, no.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Like at the time, okay.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, and like all of them talk about the Frenchman uh or the Merovingian, uh which is a character that comes from the previous movie and who like is uh pulling all the strings.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Uh he's in like a nightclub sort of situation all the time, like or like a fancy house.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: A fetish kind of club.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: There's nipple play in in this episode of The Matrix uh while in the club.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: So you know.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Someone was saying that's like yeah.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: There's like there's a scene when they're like uh going through the club before they pull their guns.
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I think you see like uh a couple and one of them is doing like they they go slow motion in one couple where the one of them is like of course the other one's nipple.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: And I think like that's probably something uh in uh in every movie there's like uh an orgy type of situation with no sex, but there is an orgy type of situation.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: It's like a a thing.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And again, it's the aesthet aesthetics that I quite enjoy.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: At a time on still the But the we'll we'll I want to get into that later on actually of uh of all that stuff within these movies.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Uh we'll come back to that because I think that's a big discussion to have about this movie, these m the Matrix movies themselves and what the Wojowski's are doing there.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Um but they like let's just try and work our way through the movie and then we'll come back to like an actual discussion about it.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: They they um So they they chase after the train man, he runs away, he jumps across a track and gets away.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Um then he like pulls up on a train on his train outside the train station and he sees uh the family and Neo and he won't let Neo on the train and he says, Oh that's what they wanted then, basically.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: Um you see Neo trying to run tracks, but it's like on a loop.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: So he just like seems to be stuck there.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Um the rest of them go to uh uh like the nightclub that we're talking about.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: The Frenchman.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they see the Frenchman, there's a shootout.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Um it's like a pretty cool scene, the the that one, with a lot of the things that I think the Matrix are is great at, which are the visuals.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Uh but yeah, there's a lot of guns, there's people upside down on the ceiling, there's that green hue they have, it's like a beautiful scene.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: It's the first I think it's the first part that uh I was starting to enjoy because I think like I wrote down like oh is this slightly later than this, like off right after this scene I wrote down uh is it is it gonna be night Neo at the train station this entire time?
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Is it just gonna be like a chase for Neo?
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Like like let's let's all get Neo back.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: And I was really hoping it wasn't that 'cause I couldn't remember it at all.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: I think like the cool thing they do in the movies is they they try to because Neo is so great and he like goes to so great lengths of being great and awesome and being the best at everything, and in each movie they put him in a situation where he can't really he doesn't really know what to do.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, I think it because it's a different situation.
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: And in this case, I know it will be like a weird movie if he was j was just like stuck in the train station for the whole movie.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: But I do think the resolution of getting him out of the train station was maybe too fast.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Uh I I don't think it But I don't know how I will do it differently.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: I just I don't know, I don't like I didn't like him being in the train station.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: I also Okay, so here's another thing about it.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: I read that he got fifteen million for this movie, and they said that's the equivalent of four hundred thousand for every minute he's on screen.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Which so that means he's on screen for like thirty minutes of the movie.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: Which is true, which is fair because we'll get there, but I think the the biggest chunk of the movie is like the robot fight at some point.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: So yeah, there's no no no none of the like uh characters that we've come to know in the previous two movies are in that scene.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: No.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Which is an issue.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: We'll get there, I guess, if we're going like scene by scene.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we'll try I'll try and move through it quickly because there's there's stuff that happens, but there's also a lot that's like not much really happening.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Um so that they they make a deal with this guy, the Frenchman, and he but they try and make a deal with him, but he wants the eyes of the oracle.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Um that's what he says.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: But yeah, and then immediately Trinity picks up her girls, no, we're not giving you the eyes of the oracle, just fuck you.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: So they manage to get it, but uh so she holds gun to him and they get Neo back.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: And he does say uh at that point, Moravinjian says something like, Oh, I see love is similar to insanity how similar these patterns are.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: And I like there's a lot of there's a lot of um imagery and stuff like that I it's very difficult to unp unpack when you've watched it for the first time in many years.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: And so like it's but he also compares like is he compares to Sarif who's the oracle's um friend or protector or whatever to Judas and so there's like a lot of imagery that I can't unpack, but there is that exists.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Is Serif in the second one?
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: He is because he's always been with the Oracle.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: Right, okay.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have like in the other movies, he doesn't have such um a big role, but he is there.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: So I forgot to bring up that the Oracle uh she died the original one died between the filming of the second and third one.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Um so they reference how so instead of just making it some weird thing, they reference how the Oracle can like uh change her look based on how she feels, I guess they say something something like that.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: No, the f the thing is that the Matrix is a program that restarts every time and everyone in the Matrix kind of s changes their shell.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: So she has a new shell.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: There's me getting something wrong immediately.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: So yeah, he goes so then Neo goes to the Oracle, they both admit they want They try to to to bring him back home, but he wants to see the Oracle because he knows it's the last chance he has to see the Oracle.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: And they both come to the conclusion they want the end of the war.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Um but at that moment the uh fake Agent Smith wakes up in in the real world.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: Um There's another mention of love here, cause uh when we see the Oracle, she's with Sati, the little girl, and they're baking cookies.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: And she says that cookies need love as everything else done.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: I really like that scene.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you remember in the other uh uh uh podcast we uh recorded uh at the end of and I'm like people if you haven't listened to an episode of this podcast, this is a spoiler, but at the end of this, you will ask me for a movie that's uh critically acclaimed that I don't like.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: And I I think I said I uh Casablanca because I don't like love.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: And now I I've changed my mind because I like love in the Matrix.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's because the the actors are so cold in portraying their love to identify with that.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: And also it's like so robotic, and it's you like love when it's when it's generated by computers.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Oh dear.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, and then like the oracle can't really see the future, or like she can't uh see past the choices, and that's another quote uh no one can see beyond beyond a choice, they don't understand.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I thought that was interesting.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: And that's all these movies cause they don't know what their choice will lead them to.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so that actually that's an interesting thing, because then Seraph and uh Sati try to to escape and uh the agent Smith start coming after them.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Uh because the Oracle sends Sati and Seraph like out and she says like to put for him to protect her.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And they uh so they go and like on a they go in like hiding and everything, all the lights go out, uh she says she's scared.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: You could True.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: There's like a lot of lot more, sorry to interrupt and to go back, but there's a lot more because I've just turned my page and I saw there's a lot more in the conversation between Oracle, the Oracle and Neo, cause they come up to a conversation about balance and like the equation and the arch architect is uh balance it's like the negative and the oracle is the positive, and as as well as Neo and Smeed.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: So there's like a balance always there.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: There's a negative and a positive.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: See, this is good.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Like this is good because this is all the stuff I was missing.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Everything that has a beginning has an end.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do like that.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: I d I don't I don't think I wrote down a lot of like the dialogue, so yeah, anything that I've missed with dialogue, just yeah.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know if I like I have a lot more in the i from now on, but yeah, I was taking a lot of notes.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: I had my notebook on my lap while I was watching.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Like had like if my flatmates came into the living room and saw me.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Is she taking notes on the matrix?
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Weird.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: I just want to understand this.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Um I did write down the cookies need love like everything does.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: I did write that.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: See?
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: I think like that's one of the things that uh about this movie is that they keep going back and forth between different scenes or different uh of so it's hard to keep track of where we are now that we're going back on on it.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: But anyway.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like they they the the Seraphim Sati try to escape, um and then Agent Smith and his like fake Agent Smiths, all like all the Agent Smiths along with him, they all like go into the Oracle's uh apartment and kitchen.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: I mean it doesn't matter that it's the kitchen.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: No, no, I just like I said it at the same time as you.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: I thought you're like, no, it's not the apartment, it's the kitchen.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Um so they go into the kitchen and like they she kind of just like accepts it.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Well, like basically like what happens is he starts questioning because he throws the cooking into and he's like, But you knew I was gonna do that, didn't you?
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: But then you also but so you had to bake the cookies knowing that I was gonna do that.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: But then did you know that I was gonna say this?
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Oh so it just goes like right he just goes deep into his mind trying to question everything that he's doing.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Uh which is an interesting callback to later on.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Uh Deliberately, purposefully, it's something he says.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: So he's it's uh within that of questioning himself, and if she knew we'd he's doing stuff deliberately and it does call back to the end of the movie as well, with him.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Uh which is cool.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Um But then he she just like accepts what's gonna happen, and it's like um he certainly infects her, he like hold he puts his arm on her and it just like goes, takes over her body and becomes himself within her.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: So he he's like remodeling inside, he's inside, he's like infected her, so like a computer virus almost.
- 33:03SPEAKER_02: It's like and he now probably has the oracle eyes.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: So he knows stuff.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: He also like uh I've I didn't find this is my own personal uh uh theory uh that I didn't see confirmed anywhere, but I'm going to to share it anyway, because he calls the oracle mom or mother in this scene.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Uh and my theory, like and the oracle is taking care of Sati, who's um uh obsolete program.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: So my theory is that in the past she has taken care of SME, who maybe was an obsolete program at the time, and then he grew bigger and bigger and bigger, and he's not taking over the matrix.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: That's a good theory.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's probably like quite accurate as well.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, so I don't know.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: I mean I it's I can believe that, so I'll go along with that as well.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: I like that as I do like that as a theory.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Um you'll have to look that up and find out later if anyone said it.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it's a fake agent smith.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: It goes, then it comes back to fake agent Smith and he says he can't remember anything.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: And this is when Naomi shows up.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Naomi show.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: They found Naomi sheep.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: Oh No Naomi?
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: Alright, I've put down I put down Naomi.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: I don't yeah, I must be working.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: I think it's Naomi.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're probably right.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: I don't I haven't seen I was I didn't have subtitles, so maybe.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: No, you're right, Naomi.
- 34:40SPEAKER_00: I just started writing down Naomi for some reason.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Um she shows up and uh there's a there's uh a war about to happen.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: The war's about to happen and half the people need to enlist, they say.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Uh half the people of that of the world need to enlist or something like that.
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: Or yeah, because they they're then we're between the ship with them like rescuing Niobi and her ch ship.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: Uh and Naiobi knows stuff because she saw the oracle as well, and we're also on Zion, where they're preparing for the m machines attack.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: So they have a plan of trying to keep the machines in the dock, and then if the dock crashes, they can hide in the temple.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: And there's a bottleneck, so maybe that's the only chance they have.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: So they like um and the the the like the general or whatever he is, the guy who's he says another quote I love, I'm afraid hope is an indulgence I don't have time for.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: It's deep.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: But yeah, everyone has to enlist, so everyone has to be a volunteer.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: Including this 16-year-old called the boy.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: He never gets a name.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: No, the kid, sorry.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: The woman, yeah, the kid.
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: And then Z, who's uh the wife or partner of the ship driver from the Nabucco Nizer who's uh in the ship as well.
- 36:12SPEAKER_02: And who she's the sister, because this again it's all connected.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: She's the sister of the two crew members of the Nabucco Nizer that die in the first Matrix.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: One of them doesn't die, but apparently was a very bad, not bad, uh very annoying person as a person, so they didn't want to hire him.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: And in between movies, he died.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's still sad.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Um But the yeah, that so the Matrix is we find that the Matrix is broken.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's something wrong with the feed.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: So they think they think there's something wrong with like the the guy like trying to control everything thinks there's something wrong, and he's like, no, that's this is this is what everyone's seeing.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because the the Niobe's ship was down, so once it comes up, it thinks there's something wrong with the feed, but it's the matrix that's fucked.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Um and it is that's because Smade is going all over doing mayhem.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: It's causing chaos.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: And so Niobi lets so like the the the leader doesn't want uh Nia to take the ship and he like refuses and he says like no you can't do it, but um Niobi because it thinks everyone needs to be in Zion protecting Zion.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: So then but Naiobi says no, you can take my ship.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: Also they were arguing before because in order to get to Naob to Niobe to get to Zion, they would have to use like the mechanical uh the ship in like mechanical and not electronic uh thing, and he's saying no one can do that, and Naiobi says she can.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: And then uh she asks because yeah, Morpheus almost doesn't show up in this movie at all.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, she asks him barely in it.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: He believes it and he says you've done it once, something like that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: But yeah.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: So in any way, uh the this ship's commander wouldn't be able to lead the ship to Zion.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:15SPEAKER_02: So better that Naomi does it all herself.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: It's that's the way that it's like someone asks uh I think it's probably Morpheus, uh, that asks her, because in previous movies she didn't believe in the theory of the one who which is what Neo is, and she says she still doesn't believe in the one, but she believes in Neo.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: But I believe in him.
- 38:44unknown: Cool.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: It's also kind of saying the same thing though.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: It's not because she doesn't believe in the in the prophecy, she believes in the person.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Because the person proves himself.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, fair of themselves Mackie goes to give the fake agent Smith an injection to like help him remember some stuff and he kills her.
- 39:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he he he's like so against Eddie all of it, then he kills her.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Um and then Trinity runs down and she like finds it and he grabs her.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Oh no, does she run down or does he just find her?
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: No, that's the wait.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: You're like you're uh you're going through because then like in the meantime, uh Trinity packs and tell tells Neo how afraid they both are, but they need to do this together, they need to go to the machine land together, and she's ready to give Oh that yeah, exactly.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: And then they go, right?
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: Both ships go, yeah, and that's when she goes down because the the ship doesn't go.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not working.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: Power is down, so she has to go down.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, when she finds him.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: She finds him there, he grabs her, um, and he like threatens her and everything, and he's like he's got and then he and then Neo goes down to save her.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: And um there's this big fight, there's he has like this special gun.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: And that's the only m moment that I think is dumb in this movie, because there's a huge amount of time of the of Bane saying, Hey Mr.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: Anderson, which is how Smith.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, this really yeah, this did really annoy me.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: Neo, what?
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Who are you?
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: Uh don't you know who I am?
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Like, it's obvious who he is.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: It takes so long to understand that it's Smith and Instantly, it's so obvious it is Smith, and like how are you not realizing this?
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: And you're supposed to be you're supposed to be the one.
- 40:57SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: He's like it it he's taken a beating, he was unconscious for a long time.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: So maybe he's just confused, but it's a dumb moment that I yeah.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: It's probably the only thing I will complain about a movie.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: The only thing you got an issue with this movement with Yes.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: So they fight he uh Neo has this special gun thing that's like what is it?
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: It's like a laser gun almost.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Like nothing.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like one of the events, I guess.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Anyway, he he he has to put it down, they get into a fight, Mr.
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: Smith grab Agent Smith grabs it.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: He puts it down, I think, to to make way for uh Trinity to be safe.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: And then all the lights go out.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: Trinity puts all the lights out.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: And they get into this proper fight, and Agent Smith carri fake Agent Smith burns Neo's eyes with the gun, so Neo can no longer see with his normal eyes.
- 42:01SPEAKER_02: But then he says you're a symbol for our all your kind, helpless, pathetic Yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: It's like a symbol, he's kind of helpless and pathetic.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: But it turns out Actually Neo can see.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Neo can see.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: He can see it in flames.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: It's it's he's seeing it like these orange flames, it looks like, but he sees it.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: It's it's like Ghost Rider.
- 42:24SPEAKER_02: But those are all I can't uh like tell you what they are, but those are all because I can't remember like the the the specifics.
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: But like the green rain thing that they use to to represent a matrix, it's a real thing that's all like and this yellow thing, it's also a real thing that they're representing.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: And I can't say what it is, so now I'm just babbling.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: But it's a real thing, and it's like a real cool visual.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: It does look it looks good.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: I thought I I don't really have an issue with it, it's just kind of funny.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: It just looks kind of funny.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_02: And then yeah, and then there's like the other bit because like yeah, Neo fights and kills him or whatever, he goes, and then he uh Trinity is like, oh my god, you're blind, and he says, I'll be okay, but I think you're going to have to drive.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: And this is like doesn't fit.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: Again, there's like a few I will say another bad thing about the movie after all.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: Because I think it's the first time in this movie they start I don't think they did it in the other two ones, they start making jokes.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: Like this is like one of those like dumb jokes that maybe you you you are used to seeing in Star Wars or something like that, when they're just like quips and there's like two or three more that uh this shouldn't be in this movie.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: But fine.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: But then we get the machine robot, the big robots.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 43:49SPEAKER_02: And now we're back in Zion, and we're back in Zion.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: We get the big machine fight with the robots.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: Uh and there's the kid, and there's like uh an old School uh Captain General person, there's Z who's the partner of the guy that's piloting the ship, uh, and like she's f she has a partner now, like a gun partner who's like a looks like a bo butch la butch lesbian.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: They they're all they all look cool and uh robots look robots look cool.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, it just gets a bit repetitive from here on out, I found.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: I I find it like emotionally exciting.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: I think they're like their stakes and you you're not sure what's happening, although you do, but you're not.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: So it's like you're on on the edge of your seat.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: I felt on the edge of my seat, so I I found it enjoyable.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: Even though there's no one from the characters you've come to enjoy there.
- 44:54SPEAKER_02: So you sh you wouldn't necessarily be caring for them.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: But you are cause it's the human race.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: So like they the machine takes out the inventory, um and then someone says no one could pilot the jokes here because there's like uh Oh.
- 45:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no one can pilot the pilot mechanicals.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and Naomi is piloting, and then she does like crash into one of the things at one point and says, Oh, she's got a fat ass, which is like the second joke that I think is out of place.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: And then the captain gets like mouled and he's about to die, and he like tells the 16-year-old to take over and open the gate.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Um Yeah.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: Also, like we see the like the main uh pessimistic uh general person who was uh talking at the beginning saying that like there's someone saying, Oh, the ship is coming, so they can use like the blessed thing that I can't remember the name, who which will call all the bugs, but that will also mean that I'll lose the dock, and the other guy says, We've already we already lost the dock.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: And yeah, like the kid.
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: There's like a another like exciting moment where the kid is putting like ammunition inside the robot and it gets stuck and he doesn't give up and it keeps kicking in the ammunition and the captain still dies.
- 46:28SPEAKER_00: I wrote down like at this point I just like it's funny you said it's like so exciting and everything, because I wrote down at this point where is Neo?
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: This is so boring without his story.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: I think it's exciting.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: I think like maybe one of the things you can say about both the second matrix and the third one is that there are so many ideas that you could make like even more movies.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: But I think that's the I think that's one of the issues with this, it's just like it's too many things trying to cram in like such a short time.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: It's true.
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: I think you could have instead of having three movies, you could have had a lot more.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: But still I find I find it I found I enjoyed it like an exciting thing.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so the the the kid manages to get the gate open.
- 47:16SPEAKER_02: Um he didn't train and he says that.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: Which is another good message.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: He says, I haven't done the training, and the captain says uh or general or whatever he is, me neither kid.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: So it's like everyone, all of us in life are just trying our best, and we haven't been trained, we're just trying.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: I like them.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: It is that's good.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: And then I don't know, like I must have like paused it at this point or something, because I wrote down the next thing I've written down is oh yeah, he's blind.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: I must have come back to it.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Because yeah, like at this point they like they managed to kill all the screen machines because they used the blasts, but that means that now they don't have any other defense system.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:03SPEAKER_02: Because that blast also kills all the all other electronics.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: So the the machines will send more machines and they have all to hide in the temple and try like the bottleneck thing.
- 48:15SPEAKER_02: And then we're back at the machine city where Neo and Trinity are arriving.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: This movie is so complicated.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: They take two hours in between it for the machines to arrive to the temple.
- 48:28SPEAKER_02: So this is like a two-hour time.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: But like so, yes, Neo he comes back, he blows up the robots as they drive.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: So he's like they're driving in their ship, and they there's another another detail.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: Okay, at this point when they're before they're deciding to go to the temple to hide, they go and have uh a meeting with like the elders.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: And what the elder asks like the general person, the pessimistic one, do you think we're going to get out of this?
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: Uh and he looks at Morpheus, which is like probably the second time Morpheus says something something in the it doesn't even say anything, it just looks he says you should ask him that because he's the one who believes in miracles.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: So that there's that's another moment.
- 49:20SPEAKER_02: But yeah, Neo and Trinity are arriving at the city thing.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to get to the end so we can actually just talk about it.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: It's so long, we've taken like 45 minutes to get here.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: Well, I know what happens.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: They're arriving at the machine city and they're um killing the machines, but there are too many.
- 49:42SPEAKER_02: Neo is using like his weird kamiamiya power, but they're too many.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: So it just says go through the sky.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: But why couldn't they have done that?
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: That's that's the other thing.
- 49:51SPEAKER_00: Why couldn't they have done that the entire time?
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: Because there's also like the thing the the the lightning bolts can also ruin their ship, I guess.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: But they but yeah, Trinity sees that's another that's why you wrote, oh right, he's blind, I guess.
- 50:07SPEAKER_02: Because when they go up the above the clouds, there's like a beautiful sunset or s kind of situation, and Trinity says, That's beautiful.
- 50:18SPEAKER_02: And Neo is blind.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: But they got yeah, so there's sentinels attached to the ship, they go through the sky to beat them, then they crash immediately.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: And Trinity died.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: She's been stabbed through the stomach.
- 50:35SPEAKER_02: And And this is a moment where she shows us that she's a really good actor, because I think that's one of the that's a great great death scene.
- 50:44SPEAKER_00: It is, yeah.
- 50:45SPEAKER_02: Where she's not like overacting the dying and the pain.
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: No, it's just an accurate death scene.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: Although I haven't I I haven't I've never seen anyone die soon.
- 50:55SPEAKER_02: No, who knows?
- 50:55SPEAKER_00: But it just seems more accurate than just like uh She's not doing the overacting.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: And then I wrote down blindly or against the machine.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: But that's my own creation.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: I wrote down um Smith grown beyond control.
- 51:13SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's something because yeah, because then he like there's the all the squids come together and form a big face with spikes.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was weird.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: He says, please don't kill me, just let me tell you something.
- 51:31SPEAKER_02: And what he says is Smith has grown beyond beyond your control.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: You can't stop him, but I can.
- 51:37SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 51:38SPEAKER_02: So just let me try it.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: And then And if you fail, I won't.
- 51:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:44SPEAKER_00: So he like can't becomes part of the machines, he like connects himself to the machines.
- 51:48SPEAKER_02: Um he goes back into the matrix.
- 51:50SPEAKER_02: Into the matrix, yeah.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: Into the matrix.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: Um and he does say yes in exchange for killing uh Smith, he asked for a peace.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: That's an important part.
- 51:59SPEAKER_00: I didn't write down.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: But I wrote this, but I did write down.
- 52:04SPEAKER_02: Like Morpheus puts down his gun.
- 52:05SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 52:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, why why oh yeah, because when that happens, all the squids that are attacking Zion stop.
- 52:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: And everyone is still like holding their guns, but Morpheus, yeah, no, I'm going to put down my gun as well.
- 52:19SPEAKER_02: There's truce.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:23SPEAKER_02: And then there's the last battle.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I wrote down here we go, Neo versus Aiden Smith.
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: And it's like a really cool visual again.
- 52:32SPEAKER_02: There's lots of rain, there's a lot of green, there's like a lot of the things we've got used to.
- 52:38SPEAKER_02: I said And the rest of us are just watching says Smith.
- 52:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's only one Smith versus versus Neo.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: It's only the main one.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: But uh It ends tonight.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it ends tonight.
- 52:48SPEAKER_00: I wrote down that this looks really bad now.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: The CGI doesn't look good anymore.
- 52:54SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: And it's like uh 2009.
- 52:57SPEAKER_00: I know I'll give it the benefit, but it just like I I'm amazed at how impressed we were back then because it doesn't it looks so cartoony now.
- 53:05SPEAKER_00: And I said the kung fu is great.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: I I don't know an issue with it.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: But you have the thing that the hand like come here.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: But then I also said that Zack Snyder was definitely inspired by this this look because it's so it's very Batman vs.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Superman that uh battle at the end and it looks so much like that that um what's what's the word?
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: It's like um the colour's sort of like been removed almost.
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, sep sep sep Sepia Sepia Sepia.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: That's not the not the term, yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: It's um not sepia, but like um You know what I'm saying.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: Like But yeah, it's like a green, yeah.
- 53:51SPEAKER_02: It's like greenish.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: Uh like there's like a few while they're fighting, they have like little conversations because Smith says the purpose of our life is to end, which is true.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: Um and then he asks Neo why does he keep fighting because he does he doesn't have Trinity anymore?
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: He doesn't why do you keep fighting?
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: I do yeah, it comes back to that.
- 54:13SPEAKER_02: It does say only a human mind can invent something as insipid as love.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: So again, like it's the love that's keeping me going through this movie.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: And then he does say that it keeps fighting cause it chooses to.
- 54:26SPEAKER_00: So they keep fighting and fighting and fighting, and it goes on and on and on.
- 54:31SPEAKER_00: Um for a long time.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: And then Smith punches Neo, who turns into Smith.
- 54:38SPEAKER_02: But it's his choice.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: Because that's what he says.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: And then he says, I choose to.
- 54:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he chooses to.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: He's like he finally accepts his fate and all the agent Smith suddenly start exploding.
- 54:51unknown: Yes.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: And it always had to be like this.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: And then it cuts to the kid.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: That's the thing.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Like I stopped uh making uh uh um notes after this, because for me, if the if it was up to me, it would have ended there.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: It's like a little bit of a like uh I'm like I think the the great thing of the Matrix and what Woshowskis did with it is that they they subverted everything.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: So that's another way they should have subverted it.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: And they should have just stopped there.
- 55:32SPEAKER_02: But yeah, then you see like the Matrix resetting again.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: The Matrix resets, yeah.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: The kid goes, this this this is part I really hate it.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: The kid like does the word some of the worst acting in this part.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: He's like, he did it, sir.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: He runs up to this this old man, he's like, He did it, sir, he did it.
- 55:50SPEAKER_00: And the the the the man's like, he did what boy?
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: It's like and he's like, he ended the war, he ended it, sir, and they're like, Wow! It's like, what did you think was happening this entire time?
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: What what did this man think was going on?
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: I can't remember that man.
- 56:12SPEAKER_02: I I cre I I deleted that bit of my brain, I can't remember that because then the.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: The next next thing I remember is the architect talking to the oracle.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: So like Neo's carried away, the Matrix needs rebooted, the Oracle goes to the Oracle's sitting in the park, and the architect comes up to her.
- 56:31SPEAKER_00: And that's like this is the center of the end of the movie, so like uh he agrees that any humans that went out of the Matrix can now leave.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and everyone who wants to stay in can stay in because it's a choice if you want to leave with dirty jumpers or if you want to eat stake.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: I know which one I'd prefer.
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: I I don't know.
- 56:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because you also don't believe in love, so which one did you prefer?
- 57:03SPEAKER_02: I think I'd prefer to be in the matrix in Zion.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, I want to be in the Matrix.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: But see, like I do believe in love because I think love is only possible in Zion.
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: Alright, you go with your dirty, dirty jumpers.
- 57:17SPEAKER_00: You don't get you don't get to wear your leather then.
- 57:18SPEAKER_02: The RG the RG in Zion in the second movie was more fun than the leather quad one in the third movie, so you know, I'm I'm going for that.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I can't disagree with that one actually.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: Um so anyway, like they um they decided that and then You also like see it back in Zion, everyone hey the war is over, hey everyone starts jumping and partying.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's kind of like what happened to Neo.
- 57:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: They just assume he dies.
- 57:51SPEAKER_00: They say like we might see him again one day or something.
- 57:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then you have like the other little bit which is the kid the oracle saying, Oh, the sky is beautiful.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Did you do that?
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Yes, I did it for Neo.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, says a little kid.
- 58:03SPEAKER_02: So now the little kid program has a purpose which is creating sunsets.
- 58:10SPEAKER_02: So yeah, it's like this last bit of the movie is dumb.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: I'll have finished it with uh Smade and Daddy.
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: But then they say like uh then the oracle says I didn't always know, but I believed.
- 58:25SPEAKER_00: Which got which ties into like uh what?
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Not knowing the answer and she not knowing the future and stuff.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: And then that's the end of the Matrix trilogy.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: Although there is another one coming up.
- 58:37SPEAKER_02: But there's there's the anime anime anime Animatrix or whatever it's called.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's the Animatrix at some point.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: I'm I haven't yet.
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: And they are about to film the fourth one.
- 58:48SPEAKER_02: Ooh, I didn't know that.
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: And I believe Keanu Ruiz is in it.
- 58:53SPEAKER_02: Ooh, like now I'm excited.
- 58:56SPEAKER_02: Happy I've rewatched the trilogy now.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: Originally it was supposed to be Michael B.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: Jordan in it.
- 59:01SPEAKER_00: And I don't know what's happened with that now.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: Now he's been like he he is going to take over all the big franchises.
- 59:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they they were saying like, well hang on, if it's Michael, so this is another it kind of issue I thought with what people were saying was like they're like, oh, if it's Michael B.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: Jordan, it must be a tr a prequel with Morpheus.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: Like, well no, he could just be another character.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have to be Morpheus.
- 59:28SPEAKER_02: Also because another great thing about Matrix as uh trilogy as a thing, as a franchise, is that it has some of the most diverse casting.
- 59:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, that's one thing I actually think still to this day.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: Because even when you see like uh crowd scenes, like first it's all in all the main characters there there is like huge diversity, but even if you like look at crowds, which I think many times are white in movies, if you look at a crowd, there's huge diversity, so that's great.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_00: It's great, and I think that's that comes back to the Wachowski's.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: I think it could Yes.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: Um I kind of like I want to talk about like one part of it that I don't like I'm not fully um I don't feel like I'm fully uh able to talk about, but like um because I'm not it's not a part of of like what I have anything to do with me, but like um the two Wichowski the Wachowskis are both trans and like um Yeah, the Matrix is supposed to be uh an Again, I I can't allegory.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: I got it.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: Uh uh for like the transitioning and stuff like that.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: And they say the the first in the first movie when he has to choose between a red pill and a blue pill, it's like the hormones are it's it has to do with the hormones things.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: Which I think is really I I think it's like a very interesting uh way of looking at it, because it does make you view the m the whole thing completely differently to when you when you see it that way.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: Um and I think like when you start to understand it as that, it uh I think you can start to appreciate it a lot more as well.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, because the matrix probably uh represents uh their life as not themselves in a way, right?
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_00: It's them it's them uh it's it's them leading a false version of themselves and then and then the in the real world it's they they're finally able to be who they truly are.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I think like you see that more in the first movie, yeah, because maybe the I'm I'm like really even the aesthetics, uh because I think it gets diluted a little bit as it goes on.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_02: But I think in the first movie they're also androgynous, and I think that's maybe something to do with that as well.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: And also probably that's what what leads them to have cast in the end such a like a diverse.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's kind of why I wanted to touch on that.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_00: Um but then okay, so like what specifically about this one uh do you enjoy?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: I think uh you can't extricate this one from the trilogy.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: So like if it was a lone movie, I'd probably not be into it, because first there that would be like you wouldn't know what we're talking about.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it wouldn't make any sense.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_02: But as a whole, I think it's very tough.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: I think I said this at the beginning, we've been recording for so long, I can't remember what I said at the start.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: But you can't fault sequels uh for not being as good as a first movie that's like revolutionary.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: Uh and I do think it has uh yeah, it has like great things and it has a great conclusion.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_02: And I like like all the little things about love and whatever, I like it.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_02: Uh and I think it's like also a different way to do a sci-fi movie, which is technically what it is.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I do th that like they I think they subvert a lot of expectations with this movie.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: With all the three of them.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Uh which I and I think that's great.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: I yeah, I think that's true.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_00: Definitely like when you view it as a whole, it's it it it's definitely like not as bad as as like viewing this one on its own.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: I just I I I don't know.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_00: I partly I part I I think part of what I dislike about it it's it's very silly that uh this is a reason for me to dislike it, but my memory of it was going to see it at when it came out originally, and uh it's this is really stupid.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_00: So I got um so they were giving away um these power raids, and then you see it in the movie.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_00: Um you see like a big sign for power raids, so they were giving them away like when you went to see the movie.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_00: I got uh got one, drank it, gave me a huge migraine, watched this movie with huge migraine, felt nauseous watching it, and felt worse and worse and worse.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: So I think that's partly like in my brain of just like always having this movie as like And that's totally understandable.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_02: I think I wouldn't enjoy a movie if I had a migraine and was feeling noxious all through it.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: And then but then like I don't know, watching it back now brings you the memories.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: No, no, not not some not even that.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: It's it's I felt like there wasn't enough of the characters I enjoyed.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: It felt very even though it's long, it felt very rushed.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like I th I do think I do think this trilogy could have been maybe ten movies, I don't know.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_02: Because there's so many ideas and so many things that they could have developed.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: I like the the fact that although I don't love it in other movies sometimes, but I do like it in these movies that they don't follow the main characters as much in the th because that's another subversion.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_00: I I don't think it worked.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think not following the main characters works.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: Because like you can't.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_00: They're built up to be this whole to serve this whole purpose in this in these movies.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_00: And so when you're not following them, it's just like, well, what what are we following?
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_00: We were following some kid that we don't know trying to s trying to like shoot a gate.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, fine.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_00: I don't care about this.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_00: You haven't built up this kid at all.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_00: We don't know anything about him.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: I think if you were an That didn't work clearly, but if you had been uh doing the multi-platform thing, I think you'd have uh met these characters outside of the movies.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: But that clearly didn't work.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: But you can't be expected to do that.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: You need you still need to have that kind of Yeah.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_00: You still need to have that that stuff that makes sense within this mov this movie on its own because you can't expect everyone to to um go out and make the choices to to view all this other stuff.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: It's all a choice.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_02: That's what everybody is teaching you.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: It's all a choice.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_02: I should have made better choices.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I agree with that, but I also still think it's like a great trilogy and a great movie.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_02: And I do think I am genuinely surprised that it has such a low um rating because and I like I was listening to other uh episodes of your podcast, and I think this point came out before that like there are some movies that are terrible that have higher ratings than the movies we're talking about, and yeah, that's why.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_02: And I like I've recently watched uh and I don't know, this is kind of a tangent, like a dump tangent, but I've watched Doctor Sleep last week, which is supposed to be like a sequel to The Shining.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and The Shining is like an amazing movie where like the terror is kind of hidden.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_02: Doctor Sleep explains everything.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: It has no mystery, it has no like fear that you can feel as uh an audience member, and I think it's like a 60 or 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_02: So come on, that's not better than Matrix Matrix Revolutions.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_00: I think it's I don't I don't think it's I don't think Matrix Revolutions is bad.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_00: I just think it misses the mark and it doesn't it doesn't stick the landing for the whole trilogy.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_00: I think that's all that's what it is.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: I think it just takes tangents that it doesn't need to go on, and there are some great moments in it.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_00: I just think it's I I think it comes more out of a frustration of like this could have been so great and it just misses out.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_00: That's to me what it is.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I get that, and I think that's why some movies not necessarily I think the other time I heard these arguments that I just gave of movies that are worth having better ratings was in the uh Jennifer Lopez uh movie.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_02: I can't remember the name of it.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: And that's not necessarily the case of that movie, but in a movie like this, maybe have everyone that's rating it on Rotten Tomatoes are like the trilogy fans that felt disappointed by this last movie.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_02: So I understand it in that sense, but I still think it's it doesn't deserve that low rating.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_00: I think yeah.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_00: It's it's also like it's the only one out of the trilogy that's got a bad rating.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_02: The r reloaded has like a lower rating than 70 something.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_02: Which is very This is also the the only movie that's not like uh that the action doesn't happen within the Matrix.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_02: This is the only one that has action it mostly the ac most of the action happens in the real world and not inside the matrix.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: I think that's also part of the reason it doesn't quite work.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_00: Because well to me, personally.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: But like I guess maybe But I think that might maybe one of the reasons it has like a lower rating as well, because people like the like the idea of the Matrix and like that visual thing.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I guess like looking at it like um looking at the original Matrix, it's so inventive for what it does within within the world of the Matrix.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_00: And then like here it just feels like they're just overusing the CGI that they've got to like think think of the Matrix Reloaded as well, like with that scene on the highway.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_00: Which is really great.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_00: There's nothing in this one quite like there's nothing in there's nothing in this one that kind of matches the level of excitement and action that the first that that re that that have the that happened in the first two to me.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_02: I think like the the guns thing in the club is shorter.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_02: And I do think like the robot fight it's no longer exciting because other movies after the Matrix have done it, but before the Matrix there was no real like robot big robot fights.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'll I will give it that.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_00: But think how cool that would have been inside the Matrix.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_02: But why will those I don't know, why will what will they be defending inside a Matrix?
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: Think of those fighting Mr.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_00: Aidan Smith.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: He brings all of those to fight each Aidan Smith.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: Dumb, but it would have been fun.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_02: That'll be a different movie.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's what will happen in in Matrix 4.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: What will happen in Matrix 4?
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but they're writing it again, so at least the Wachowski's a part of it.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: Maybe now because now they have come out as uh trans women, so maybe now it will be a full um acceptance of living their life, so maybe that will be a cool thing to see.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's gonna be very different.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: I think it'll be a a real change.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_00: Um and it's also like nearly twenty years on from the last one.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I think like although like counter revs are barely changed.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he looks the same.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_00: It's creepy.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_00: Have you seen have have you seen him in the new Bill and Ted trailer?
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_02: I haven't.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_02: I haven't watched it yet.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_00: I suggest you watch that.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: I will do it as soon as we actually I'd like I kinda want you to pull up a picture of him what he looks like in the new Bill and Ted Oh yeah.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: Looks good.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_00: No, that's not here.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_00: That's not him in that.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: Find the one without with where he's not got a beard.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_02: Is it number three?
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Bill and Ted face the music.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_02: I I see it now.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_02: It does look a bit bloated and older, I guess.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_02: If he had if he as a real person didn't haven't tricked time, that would be how he looked now.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: If he wasn't a vampire from the 1800s.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so do you have anything else to say about these movies?
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: Um about or is like this one specifically?
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_02: I really like them.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_02: I I I was worried because after the debacle of the sound from Hudson Hawk not uh being there, and you like invited me to do another one, I immediately thought of The Matrix, but I haven't watched them in like a long time.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_02: So I was like, maybe all of it will be horrible now, but I did actually love them.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm glad you enjoyed them.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: Let's actually I'm gonna bring up uh some of the reviews because I we I realize we haven't talked about those.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_00: Um so it's it's 35%, or the audience score is 60% as well, which is still like a low audience score.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_00: Um but like some of the reviews they say like um like the original Matrix was full of dizzying surprises, but it's turned out that the Wachowski didn't have many more tricks up their sleeves.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_00: Um which I'm I'm kind of saying is like that's that's kind of my issue with it as well.
- 1:14:50SPEAKER_00: It's just like it's so like the first one is so exciting, so original, and then this one is kind of uh there's there's just like that little bit missing.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_00: They just don't quite bring it.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_02: I think like some uh part of it in my uh thing like I don't love the Merovingian as a character.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_02: Uh so I I also didn't like him uh in the in Matrix Reloaded.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_02: Um and I yeah, and I think m all of the actors, most of the actors and like the Merovingian and Monica Bolucci, whose name I don't remember as a character, yeah, are both so like robotic and I guess they're they're programmed, so it's fine.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_02: But it doesn't it doesn't feel like it's like a deliberate uh choice.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_02: It feels like they just can't act.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I don't like them as characters.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_02: But then again in the third movie they don't appear at the moment.
- 1:15:56unknown: Yeah.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_00: This one here is the one that I think I agree with, which it says that it averages out to be a mildly better film than The Matrix Reloaded, mostly on account of it being neither as good nor as bad in its peaks and valleys.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_00: Which I think it's a it's a very like average movie as a whole.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_00: And I think, yeah, like it's not terrible and it's not amazing.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: The Matrix Reloaded has worse moments, but it has better moments, and then the Matrix is obviously like the peak of it.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_00: Um I think that's that's what my feeling That's fair.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_02: But I still like the whole trilogy.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_00: I know you like the whole trilogy.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: Where does this rank for you out of the three of them?
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_02: I feel like I probably agree with that last review because I feel like I've enjoyed myself more watching Revolutions than I did watching Reloaded.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_02: I felt like in Reloaded I had to like try and be have like pay more attention to it to keep up with all the threads and all like the new ideas that they were throwing at me.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_02: I don't know like if I've watched all of them more times now if I that will change, but I as w having watched them over the weekend I think Revolutions were more mo was more enjoyable than Reloaded.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: Are you going to play the game?
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: I'm not like a super gamey person.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: But don't forget, you need to play you need to do all of them to understand the whole thing.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: Or you could watch someone playing it online or something.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_02: I think I'd prefer playing it.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_02: I don't understand that thing of like watching other people play games.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_02: I don't understand Twitch.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_00: But you do have an account.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: Yes, but it's to watch comedy shows because that's the new world ruling.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_00: It's the new normal, yeah.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_00: It's such a fun world where we all have to be online and do our shows.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_02: Um we have to do everything online uh as someone was saying the other day.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_02: You have to like uh do your entertainment, your work, and you're like wanking and you're crying.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_00: Oh god.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_02: On the screen.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Mariana.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_02: It was this is I'm going to name the person who said it, it was Charlie George, it wasn't me, so you know.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, you can call out Charlie George.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna tack her in this.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so let's move on to do you have a new movie that you can talk about where it's Yes, because now this time I thought about it.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_00: So a movie that's well reviewed that you hate.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_00: That you think is bad.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_00: Not hate, you think is bad.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_00: That you think is bad.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_02: Midsummer.
- 1:19:02unknown: Wow.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_02: And the arg argument won't have anything to do with love.
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, that movie has nothing to do with love, so I like I think it's probably to do with expectations.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can imagine that actually that that has huge expectations going in.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_00: Huge buzz.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_02: But like I I wasn't I just felt it was boring.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_02: I felt that some of like the gory bits were unnecessary and didn't bring like excitement or anything to the movie.
- 1:19:43SPEAKER_02: It was just like guriness for guriness.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_02: And then I get the again probably and I will watch the word again.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_00: Allegory.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_02: Oh Allegory.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_00: I was just guessing you were gonna say that.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_02: There's like a few words.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_02: Ca category is another one that I usually can't don't know what's going on.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_02: It's not your first language, it's fair.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_02: You don't have to defend yourself.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_02: There's like a few words that I always have to like stop and say them in my head before I say them out loud.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_00: Um Spoilers for what Marianne is gonna say now.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_00: I have cut something out and we're gonna talk it again.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I don't like the bit the I don't like a lot about the movie because it's boring and whatever, but m my main issue with it is that even though she had like clearly a shitty boyfriend, um like why let them kill him and the way they do in like such a because it's clear that what's wrong in this scenario is that there is this cult that kills people, yeah, that like sacrifices people.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_02: That's clearly what's wrong.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_02: And the shitty boyfriend maybe can go to like therapy and like try to like it's like the same same thing about canceling people.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_02: You it's not you're not necessarily canceling people.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_02: Some people may like evolve and change, but you don't need to kill them.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_00: No, I agree with that.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_00: I think that I think that was like I think it was just kind of the whole thing of like she'd been completely taken over and completely given into the uh surround her surroundings and she'd been so manipulated by by this whole cult uh that she was already not trusting her boyfriend, and then she saw him cheating on her and still you wouldn't trust.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_00: I I know I know, I agree with that.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_00: But in a cult you might Yeah.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_02: But like yeah, I guess.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_02: I I guess like what I wanted her to be w was a strong woman that'll uh see through it at the end.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_02: Because if if I don't know, I uh if it had ended differently, maybe I will have like So it's more the ending that you didn't like as opposed to everything else.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_02: I also think it's very boring.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_02: Uh it's very long.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_02: It's very long, it's very Yeah.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_02: It's not like yeah, I think it's boring.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_02: And I think it's predictable when people start disappearing and stuff like that.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's very predictable, yeah.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_02: I th I was expecting something revolutionary.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_02: I was expecting the matrix and I was met with Midsummer.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_00: Fair, fair.
- 1:22:49SPEAKER_00: And I can't uh I'm not gonna like dispute anything that you say because I've already just done that with the Matrix Revolutions.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_00: We all have our opinions and yeah.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, movies.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_00: Movies nobody is right or wrong.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_02: There's one for everyone.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_00: And the Matrix Revolutions is for Mariana.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_02: I'm sure I I'll have some people joining me.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_00: If you okay, so if you agree with Mariana that the Matrix Revolution is a great movie, how can they get in contact with you?
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_00: Segway.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_02: So you can find me uh through social media at Marianna's Bits.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_02: And also, like if you I'm not going to say this in a podcast.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_02: I was going to give out my like one of my emails, but Oh no, do not do that.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna give out your phone number.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, that will be worse.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_00: Don't give out please do not give out your email.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_02: It's like I have plenty and so uh four different things, but I won't.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_02: But like yeah, you can find me on Twitter and Instagram on at Marianna's Beats.
