Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to episode 202 of the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 0:03Today we're talking about the root causes of Hashimoto's.
- 0:08Hashimoto's is two different things. It is an attack on your thyroid,
- 0:11so you have thyroid symptoms, and then you have something causing the attack,
- 0:15which is the autoimmune condition.
- 0:17However, there are root causes causing the autoimmune condition.
- 0:21So let's talk about what those root causes are, and more importantly,
- 0:25what you can do to address those root causes so that you can start feeling like yourself again.
- 0:31Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast. This is where you will find
- 0:34clarity and simple, sustainable strategies to feel better.
- 0:38I want to help you figure out your root causes.
- 0:42My name is Esther Yunkin. I am a registered nurse.
- 0:44I know how exhausting it is to live with fatigue, brain fog,
- 0:48and the ups and downs of Hashimoto's, and that is why I'm here.
- 0:52I'm here to cut through the confusion and to give you practical steps that support
- 0:57your body, calm your immune system, so that you can regain your energy and feel like yourself again.
- 1:02So in the last episode, episode 201, I talked about all of the basics.
- 1:07What is your thyroid? What is Hashimoto's? And...
- 1:10A little tiny bit about what you can do. Today, we're going deeper into what
- 1:15are the primary root causes so that you can know what you can do.
- 1:19Now, if you want to shortcut this, you can skip today's episode and go straight
- 1:24into Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 1:26I have a Root Causes Revealed mini course.
- 1:28I call it mini because in less than one hour, you are going to be able to figure
- 1:33out your root causes. And this is the common sense approach.
- 1:38There is a philosophy of test, don't guess. I'm not asking you to guess.
- 1:42I am teaching you about the root causes in Hashimoto's Decoded so that you can
- 1:48figure out, oh, you know, these are my root causes.
- 1:51Yes, if you want to go further, you can do lab testing.
- 1:54And we're not going to do that in less than an hour in the Hashimoto's Decoded
- 1:58mini course. That is less than an hour.
- 2:01You're going to get a little workbook. You're going to be able to make your
- 2:03map of exactly what you need to do in order to feel like yourself again.
- 2:08So if you want to hit pause on this episode, head down to the show notes and
- 2:13I will have a link right down there so you can click and go to Hashimoto's Decoded.
- 2:17I think it's very important that every single person knows your root cause because
- 2:22if you do not know what is causing your immune system to go haywire,
- 2:26then there's nothing that you can do and then you are essentially just a victim
- 2:30and you are a lifelong pharmaceutical patient.
- 2:33And I don't want that for you. I want you to feel like yourself again.
- 2:36I want you to have your symptoms go away.
- 2:40I want you to be on a stable or even a lowering dose of your medication because
- 2:45that means that your thyroid is doing what it's supposed to do.
- 2:48It's producing the hormones that it's supposed to and your body is converting as it is supposed to.
- 2:54The goal is always that your body is doing what it is designed to do. That is the goal.
- 2:59I just did a complete revision on episode 83 on the blog post.
- 3:05I went to answer somebody's question in a DM, and I
- 3:09It was about supplements. And so I was like, oh, you need to go to episode 83.
- 3:13Here's the blog post and it will answer a lot of the questions.
- 3:16And as I opened the blog post, I'm like, oh my goodness, there's a lot of changes that I needed to make.
- 3:22The essence of episode 83 of all about supplements with Hashimoto's or for Hashimoto's
- 3:27is getting your body to do what your body is designed to do.
- 3:32That is the goal of supplementation. That is the goal of activation.
- 3:35You can read more about that in the blog post or listen to it on episode 83.
- 3:39We want to get your body doing what it is designed to do.
- 3:44One of the things your body is designed to do is heal.
- 3:47And we want our thyroid to be able to heal.
- 3:51We want to stop the attack on it. We want your body to do what your body is
- 3:56designed to do so that you could feel like yourself again.
- 3:59So with every single autoimmune condition, there are three different things at play.
- 4:04And this is universal for all autoimmune conditions, at least all that I know
- 4:10of, because every autoimmune condition is an autoimmune condition.
- 4:15We name them different names, Hashimoto's, lupus, MS, type 1 diabetes.
- 4:21We name them different things because your immune system is attacking different
- 4:26things in the body. So they all get their own name.
- 4:28But at the root, all of them have three things in common. And one of them is a genetic condition.
- 4:35You cannot change your ancestry. We cannot be born again other than spiritually.
- 4:42It's a whole other topic.
- 4:44You cannot change your ancestry. Your genetics are your genetics. However, it's
- 4:51I hear the analogy of a loaded gun a lot.
- 4:55Your genetics are like a loaded gun, but something pulls the trigger.
- 4:59So you have your genes, but how
- 5:02they express is really up to a lot of lifestyle things and diet things.
- 5:07You look at the logo for Health with Hashimoto's, and it has five petals.
- 5:12It is a flower with five petals. There's a butterfly in the middle.
- 5:15Those five petals represent body, mind, spirit, diet, environment.
- 5:21There are different things in each one of those petals that can pull the trigger,
- 5:26that can change your genetics, and it can make things express differently.
- 5:31So the first thing every autoimmune condition has is a genetic component.
- 5:35The second thing is a gut component. Now this, for a lot of people, is leaky gut.
- 5:42You cannot feel or see leaky gut.
- 5:45There are not easy tests for leaky gut.
- 5:48You can test for it, but it's just assumed now as they've done more and more
- 5:53and more research on leaky gut.
- 5:55It's officially called intestinal permeability because it means things can permeate
- 6:01or go through your gut lining that they're not supposed to go through.
- 6:04The problem is when things go through the gut lining, then you have things that
- 6:09are too big, like bits of food, bits of protein.
- 6:12They're too big. They shouldn't have gone through. And then your body is like,
- 6:16oh, this isn't supposed to be here.
- 6:17It mounts a defense and it tries to attack that thing.
- 6:21And that is one reason you can get allergies and sensitivities because of leaky gut.
- 6:25But another thing that leaky gut impacts is autoimmune conditions.
- 6:30One of the reasons why leaky gut is assumed to.
- 6:35Or why some people assume that leaky gut impacts on immune conditions is because
- 6:40your immune system is constantly fighting all of these particles that are too big.
- 6:46And so your immune system is working over time. And,
- 6:50I'm sure that you have done some overtime work in your life.
- 6:54And the more overtime you put in, the more tired you are, and the more cranky
- 6:59you are, and the more likely you are to snap at somebody that you love,
- 7:04right? Has that happened?
- 7:05I'm sure it has happened to you. You just get so tired. You're overworked.
- 7:08And all of a sudden, you are just, you're cranky.
- 7:13And you're attacking things that you normally wouldn't attack.
- 7:16And I'm not saying like physically, but.
- 7:19You're not yourself. Well, that's your immune system. It's not working right.
- 7:23It's cranky. It's attacking things. It's overzealous.
- 7:26And the thyroid, one reason people think,
- 7:29or one of the theories of this immune system attack on your thyroid is that
- 7:35your thyroid has collected a lot of environmental toxins and your immune system
- 7:40is a little overzealous,
- 7:41but it's attacking your thyroid because it says, hey,
- 7:44there are things in here, the thyroid is hanging on to things that should not
- 7:49be here, and we need to attack it, and we need to, you know, we need to get rid of it.
- 7:54So every single person with an autoimmune condition has a genetic component,
- 7:58has a gut component. Those are two of the three.
- 8:01The third thing that every single person has is a trigger.
- 8:05You have a genetic component. That's the same for everybody.
- 8:09You have a gut component. That's the same for everybody.
- 8:12Genetics, gut, huge categories.
- 8:15You have a genetic component and a gut component. The other thing is a trigger.
- 8:20Now, triggers can vary from person to person, and there are eight common triggers.
- 8:25So let me quickly go over those. The summer series this year,
- 8:31I usually do a shorter episode format in the summer, around 10 minutes instead
- 8:36of 20 minutes, and I have a theme.
- 8:38This year, the theme is your root causes, knowing what's going on,
- 8:44because the more you know, the more you can choose different things to address the problems.
- 8:50If I don't know, let me give you a quick example.
- 8:54When my third boy was one year old, we went to his well child check and because
- 8:59we lived in a really old house, they're like, it's standard that we do a lead
- 9:04check. I'm like, okay, that's fine.
- 9:05So they drew the labs and then we went on with life.
- 9:10While I was working in the ER over the weekend, I want to say it was a.
- 9:14It was for sure a weekend. It might have been a holiday weekend where it was longer.
- 9:18I was like, oh, I'm just going to check on his labs because I was in the hospital system.
- 9:22And back then you could access family charts without breaking any sort of HIPAA.
- 9:27Now things have changed and you're not supposed to. Back then it was 100% fine.
- 9:31So I logged in, checked his labs, and I saw two red exclamation points and it
- 9:37said critical lab value.
- 9:39And I was like, oh my goodness. You know, my heart sunk.
- 9:41I was completely stressed out.
- 9:43Like my one-year-old has toxic amounts of lead.
- 9:48That was the knowledge. Now I knew what I was dealing with.
- 9:52Then I had to figure out two different things. I had to figure out,
- 9:56number one, how to stop the lead from going into his body.
- 9:59Where is he picking it up? How is he becoming toxic?
- 10:03And then the second thing I needed to figure out was how to get the lead out.
- 10:06So I needed to prevent more lead from going in. and at the same time,
- 10:10I needed to get the lead that was already in, I needed to get that out.
- 10:13Well, it's the same thing with your root causes.
- 10:16You need to have the knowledge. You need to know what is going on.
- 10:20And then you need to do two things at the same time.
- 10:23Number one, figure out how to lower that root cause, you know,
- 10:26prevent more from going in. And at the same time.
- 10:30Figure out how to mitigate whatever that root cause was.
- 10:35So if it's environmental stressors, if it's environmental toxins,
- 10:39just like the lead, then we need to figure out how to get it out of your body in a safe way.
- 10:44Because sometimes if you go through a detox, it can be really,
- 10:47really hard on your body.
- 10:48You can actually cause more harm than when your body was just,
- 10:52you know, biding its time, kind of had things protected in bubbles.
- 10:56Your body is very good at protecting itself from further harm,
- 11:01which is why it stores some toxins in your thyroid. It just sticks them there for later.
- 11:05It stores other things in fat cells. It like wraps it in bubble wrap,
- 11:09a bubble wrap of a fat cell to keep it away from everything else.
- 11:13Some toxins go into your bones. That's where the lead is stored.
- 11:18So with my son, we could get some of it out.
- 11:21And then as you get it out of his bloodstream, then more is released from the
- 11:25bones because the blood can accept more or something.
- 11:28I just know that it goes in cycles so you remove it from
- 11:31the blood and then the bones release more and then
- 11:34you have to remove that from the blood and then the bones release more so there
- 11:37are systems and there are things that you have to do once you figure out the
- 11:41root causes and like I said Hashimoto's decoded in one hour less than one hour
- 11:47I'm helping you figure all of those out but that's what we're talking about
- 11:50over the summer is a different root causes and what you can do.
- 11:54So briefly, here are the eight most common triggers.
- 11:59And they're each going to get their own episode. Number one is stress.
- 12:03And you're like, yeah, Esther, I know that one. Absolutely.
- 12:08The thing is, there's a lot of different kinds of stress. We're going to go
- 12:11through body, mind, spirit, diet, environment.
- 12:13There are stressors in each one of those areas.
- 12:16And it is your duty as somebody with Hashimoto's to figure out,
- 12:21okay, where are my different stressors?
- 12:23What can I lower? And how can I deal with a stress that I cannot lower?
- 12:28Because there are some stressors that you can't get rid of. They're just part
- 12:32of your life. So you get to figure out how to deal with them and how to lower
- 12:36your response to the stress.
- 12:39Another one, and this one does need testing, not just guessing, it is vitamin D levels.
- 12:44When you have low vitamin D, that is a trigger for many autoimmune conditions.
- 12:49It's a trigger for a lot of things.
- 12:51During COVID, we heard a lot, at least I heard a lot about vitamin D.
- 12:56Because it was directly correlated with COVID levels.
- 13:00So vitamin D is something that you need to test. We're going to do a full episode
- 13:04about this over the summer. Just know that it is one that you can do through the mail.
- 13:08I purchased, I want to say I got one on Amazon, or I got one for sure on Fullscript.
- 13:14You can just get a little card in the mail and then poke your finger,
- 13:18send it to the company, and they send your results in your email.
- 13:22Low vitamin D is one of the common triggers.
- 13:25Hormone changes. Now, if you've heard any of the episodes I've done about fertility,
- 13:31about puberty, I had guests on for both of those topics.
- 13:36You know, a lot of Hashimoto's triggers or gets started during the three Ps,
- 13:41puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause.
- 13:44Hormone changes can be a trigger for Hashimoto's. Another is food reactions.
- 13:50We've talked about gluten.
- 13:51I had Mickey Trescott on a little bit ago talking about the autoimmune protocol,
- 13:57and that is a huge tool to figure out what your body does and does not want
- 14:04as far as different ingredients.
- 14:07Another trigger is environmental chemicals and toxins.
- 14:11It's huge, and I don't know about you, but I grew up in the bath and body age,
- 14:16the bath and body era, when you went to the mall and you always swung by Bath & Body Works.
- 14:21I had my favorite smell. I would love to know what your favorite smell is.
- 14:25We kind of all had our favorites.
- 14:28And you might not be the same age as me, but there are different things,
- 14:32environmental chemicals, that I'm sure you can think of. You're like,
- 14:36oh yeah, fabric softener.
- 14:38All of my laundry smells a certain way.
- 14:41Those are VOCs, volatile organic compounds, and there's a lot of other environmental chemicals.
- 14:49I could, and I will, go into more detail over the summer when we talk about that.
- 14:55Blood sugar issues, I'm not just talking about people who are diabetic.
- 14:58I'm talking about anybody.
- 15:00And high blood sugar and low blood sugar can be a trigger for Hashimoto's.
- 15:06In fact, low blood sugar is actually more of a trigger than high blood sugar for Hashimoto's.
- 15:12And some of that comes back to stress. Because low blood sugar,
- 15:16think of yourself, when you get hangry, you're stressed.
- 15:19So blood sugar issues can be a trigger.
- 15:22That is six. Number seven is iodine.
- 15:26This one, I've honestly been scared, not scared, unwilling to do a podcast episode
- 15:33about iodine because there is very good research on both sides of this issue.
- 15:38Some people believe that you need more iodine. Some people think that you need less iodine.
- 15:43We do know that when your thyroid produces T4, it gets that number four because
- 15:50there are four molecules of iodine.
- 15:53So you obviously need some iodine for your thyroid to be working.
- 15:58So we will talk about iodine this summer. I'll finally tackle it after over
- 16:03200 episodes where I have not tackled iodine.
- 16:07But you deserve to know. You need to know what's going on.
- 16:10The eighth one that we're going to talk about this summer, and I might not go
- 16:13in this order over the summer, by the way, it is infections of any kind.
- 16:18And this could be bacterial infections or viral infections. It could be mold,
- 16:22which isn't technically an
- 16:24infection, but there are infections of any kind and that can be a trigger.
- 16:29So in summary, Hashimoto's is your body, your immune system attacking your thyroid.
- 16:35We have to address why is your immune system going haywire?
- 16:39And then we have to also address what we can do to support your thyroid.
- 16:43So knowing your root causes is crucial.
- 16:47You can go through Hashimoto's Decoded right now. The link is down in the show
- 16:51notes. It's super cheap.
- 16:53In fact, when I'm talking to somebody about the different things I offer for
- 16:58pay, they're like, why is there this gap?
- 17:01You have something for $27 right now, and then you have your Hashimoto's root
- 17:06cause reset, which is over $500.
- 17:10This is a huge gap. And I'm like, yes, I know. But I want every single person
- 17:16to be able to figure out their root causes.
- 17:19I know that there is a, you know, there's a gap between $27 and $550.
- 17:25I think it is right now. I know there's a gap.
- 17:28And that's intentional because I priced the Hashimoto's decoded so low so that
- 17:35it would be available for everybody.
- 17:37I really want every single person who listens to my podcast to be able to figure
- 17:43out what their root causes are.
- 17:45I want you to be able to shortcut your time so that you know exactly what to do.
- 17:50And then the Hashimoto's root causes reset is taking you by the hand and leading
- 17:55you through, okay, how are you going to navigate these?
- 17:59Now that you know your root cause is, what next?
- 18:02And you can figure that out on your own. I am a DIY person, so I mean,
- 18:08I had to do all of this myself.
- 18:10But I want to make it shorter for you. I want to be able to walk alongside you
- 18:14and support you and figure out how you can shortcut your time so you can feel like yourself again.
- 18:18Because I don't want you wasting any more days, weeks, months,
- 18:21or years looking for answers.
- 18:23I want you to have all of the answers that you can be able to implement things ASAP.
- 18:28So join me this summer. Send this podcast to a friend and let's heal and learn together.
- 18:36I am excited for this series and I will see you next week. Oh,
- 18:40by the way, I will still have guests.
- 18:42So every third episode, I typically have a guest and the guests are not going
- 18:48to be necessarily following this root cause theme.
- 18:52I have been interviewing people over the last month or two, and I'm just going
- 18:56to schedule those out through the summer. So I am excited about some of those guests.
- 19:00I think you're going to really like it. All right, let's have a great summer.
