- 0:01(Transcribed by TurboScribe. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) He's Rick Tyler and he's Dan Cashman and I'm Matt Scott from Days World and I'm on the Rick
- 0:06and Dan show.
- 0:07In Maine, we often hear, you can't get there from here.
- 0:10These are the stories of the risk takers, the trailblazers, those who turn obstacles
- 0:14into opportunities every day and found their way to get there from here.
- 0:19And today they're on the Rick and Dan show.
- 0:23Our selection is limited.
- 0:24We have Bud Light, Miller Light, and one tubular.
- 0:27The tubular will grease the wheels.
- 0:28Would you be available to bring one of the tubular beers into the podcast studio for
- 0:35Matt Scott, please?
- 0:36Question mark.
- 0:37And a Miller Light from the basement for Dan, please.
- 0:39Did you hear when I came in, Paul goes, Matt, do you want me to get you a beer?
- 0:43Because the only way that I could do commercials back in the day was if they got me drunk.
- 0:47It's the only way I could do it.
- 0:48So I was stumbling and stumbling and stumbling and Bob was like, wait a minute, he's way
- 0:52better at this with alcohol.
- 0:53So we ran across the store and got a six pack and I pounded two beers and I came back and
- 0:58nailed it.
- 0:58So every time that Paul would come, they would bring a six pack.
- 1:02So I love it.
- 1:02Yeah.
- 1:02So I was able to do.
- 1:03Do we want this whole beer thing on this podcast?
- 1:06Yeah.
- 1:06Yeah.
- 1:06It's not like Rogan where we're eating mushrooms and smoking doobies and stuff, right?
- 1:11Do they do mushrooms and doobies on Joe?
- 1:12Well, they got, they did in the, when he would get together with all the boys, um, his friends.
- 1:17Yes.
- 1:17Was it a sponsor kind of a thing?
- 1:18No, they just were, they just, it leaked out that they had just ate a bag of mushrooms and
- 1:22then, and then they got, they got on a little bit for it.
- 1:25We're only allowed to use the sponsored mushrooms.
- 1:29Got it.
- 1:29Right.
- 1:29What is a brand of mushrooms anyway?
- 1:32Um, Shroomsastic.
- 1:33I just made that up.
- 1:34Um, no idea.
- 1:36You'd have to ask someone in Colorado.
- 1:37Because shiitake.
- 1:37That's a mushroom, isn't it?
- 1:38Well, maybe that's a new sponsorship avenue for the Rick and Dan show.
- 1:41We can get some shrooms companies.
- 1:43Shroom companies.
- 1:43I got to get some paper now cause I get a markdown every time someone cusses cause I've
- 1:47got to bleep it out.
- 1:48Oh really?
- 1:48Oh.
- 1:49Stop, stop.
- 1:50See?
- 1:51Now I got to go back again.
- 1:53Oh my word.
- 1:54Can you, can you bleep it out?
- 1:56Yeah.
- 1:56That's what I have to do.
- 1:58But I got to do it all manually.
- 1:59Why do we have to?
- 2:00This is not governed by FCC broadcast rules.
- 2:04Because you have to mark if it's explicit.
- 2:05So make it explicit.
- 2:06Oh yeah.
- 2:07Make it explicit.
- 2:07Make this one our first blue episode.
- 2:09Oh yeah.
- 2:10Do you want it?
- 2:10Matt Scott goes blue.
- 2:14No, no, no.
- 2:15Don't you mean gone?
- 2:16I'm not red or blue.
- 2:18Blue comedy.
- 2:19Okay.
- 2:20Yeah.
- 2:20I thought you were like calling me a dork rat or something.
- 2:23No.
- 2:23No, no.
- 2:23It's the blue comedy, which means you're a little bit, uh, like the second show is blue.
- 2:27Second show blue.
- 2:28Don't bring the kids.
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:29The waiters and the waitresses.
- 2:30They make the real magic.
- 2:31Side quest.
- 2:32I'm not a Republican or a Democrat.
- 2:34All right.
- 2:34Oh look, here's the most important.
- 2:36Hey!
- 2:36It's tubular.
- 2:37Some people have poly girls.
- 2:38We have Paul.
- 2:39Paul back in the day was like, Hey Matt, do you need a beer to talk?
- 2:43I'm like, I grew up a little bit.
- 2:44I can do it without alcohol now, but this helps.
- 2:46Cheers.
- 2:47Cheers to you.
- 2:48By the way, open one for yourself.
- 2:50Yes.
- 2:51Welcome.
- 2:51Oh, cheers everybody.
- 2:52And when you cheers, you have to make eye contact.
- 2:54Oh, do you?
- 2:54Yeah.
- 2:55Okay.
- 2:55You know, Alex Graber's here.
- 2:57We were drinking just plain water.
- 2:58This is much different.
- 2:59No, the light's not far off.
- 3:00Did I just pop the cherry on drinking on these podcasts?
- 3:03Yeah, I think so.
- 3:05Am I allowed to even say that Rick?
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:06Second, I'm just marking down.
- 3:08It's a podcast.
- 3:08You can say whatever you want.
- 3:09I don't know why.
- 3:10I mean, Mr. Straight Lace over here beside me has to bleep things out.
- 3:13How many times have you been to see the band Fish?
- 3:17Just under 200 times.
- 3:18God.
- 3:19I wish.
- 3:19So there's this thing called the Fish Fantasy Tour where you can go in and actually like
- 3:23follow it back.
- 3:24I'm too busy going to the shows.
- 3:26It's just right around there.
- 3:27I've been to 70 in the last three years.
- 3:30Wow.
- 3:31Because I had kids in between that beginning part of it.
- 3:34And then I'm going to jump right to the question because I don't think I've ever asked you this.
- 3:37Do your kids have an affinity for the band Fish as much as you have an affinity for the
- 3:41band Fish?
- 3:42No, that's impossible.
- 3:43But I do have a funny story about them and Fish though, because I'll answer it this way.
- 3:49Their first concert was Fish in Mexico in 2018.
- 3:53How old were they?
- 3:54Gracie was 11 and Laney was nine.
- 3:57That was their first show, like concert ever.
- 4:00And then their second one was Tab, which is straight Anastasio band.
- 4:03Then their third one was Fish and then their fourth one is Taylor Swift.
- 4:06Yeah.
- 4:07Wow.
- 4:07Yeah.
- 4:08That seems like a.
- 4:09Makes sense, right?
- 4:09Yeah.
- 4:10It seems like a good trifecta.
- 4:11It does to the person not paying for the tickets.
- 4:13They were 11 and nine when they got to go to their first Fish or Fish-like concert.
- 4:19How old were you when you went?
- 4:2117.
- 4:21The great one up there.
- 4:23I'm boring.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:24I would say limestone.
- 4:26No, no.
- 4:26Limestone.
- 4:28I was 17.
- 4:29Calm down.
- 4:31The statute of limitations is way up right now.
- 4:34How much of that show do you remember?
- 4:36Quite a bit of it.
- 4:37It changed my life.
- 4:37Literally just changed my life.
- 4:39How so?
- 4:40Real quickly, the kids.
- 4:41I want to finish that one real quick because the great one is a long story.
- 4:45But Gracie, I remember we started her skiing, both kids when they were really little.
- 4:49And I remember always going to Sugarloaf back and forth in the car.
- 4:52And all we listened to was Fish.
- 4:54My wife and I.
- 4:55My wife came at the time.
- 4:56And that's all they knew.
- 4:58The kids.
- 4:59That's all they knew.
- 5:01I was stuck in a, I wouldn't say a Fish loop.
- 5:03It was more like go today's world, work all day, kids.
- 5:07And like it was simple for me.
- 5:08It was easy like because Fish has never played the same song twice, right?
- 5:12So you can listen to like Bathtub Gin from 1994 and it's been different 2000 times since.
- 5:18So you can just play with it.
- 5:20You know, it's easy.
- 5:20Just turn on livefish.com, you know, or the app.
- 5:23But so the kids were just, that's all they listened to.
- 5:25And I remember turning the truck on one day and Gracie Mae in the back and her sister.
- 5:30I think Gracie was like maybe five and Lainey was three and the radio came on instead of
- 5:36that.
- 5:36Just my regular, you know, recorded or downloaded music.
- 5:39And she was like, dad, what is that?
- 5:41And I was like, what is what?
- 5:42And she's like, what is that?
- 5:43Like, what's that noise?
- 5:44And I was like, music.
- 5:45And she was like, Fish?
- 5:47And I was like, no, no music.
- 5:49Like she's like Fish.
- 5:50And I'm like, like how do you tell a five year old that there's other things out there,
- 5:55you know?
- 5:55And then I remember my wife and I joking like maybe we should listen to like, I don't know,
- 5:59the Rick Tyler show or something.
- 6:00No, I'm just kidding.
- 6:00Oh no, don't do that.
- 6:02Because now anything other than she didn't know what radio was.
- 6:05That's fascinating.
- 6:06I remember with my kids, I had like a curated playlist because I didn't want to have my mornings
- 6:11be wheels on the bus and things like that.
- 6:13So I put together things like Stevie Wonder, Hugh Wheeler was in the news, family friendly
- 6:17stuff that had like good horn lines, good.
- 6:19Why don't we do it in the road Beatles?
- 6:21No, I didn't have that one on there, but it would have been a good option.
- 6:24But, um, but I was so proud one day on the radio, something came on.
- 6:28It was a song.
- 6:29I, it was a Miley Cyrus song.
- 6:31And my daughter was young enough that she started crying and I was like, oh, is it the
- 6:36music?
- 6:36And I flipped on Stevie Wonder and she stopped and I was like, yes, I've done something right.
- 6:40At least one thing.
- 6:41I think it's great that you brought them up on fish.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:44Um, I, and yeah.
- 6:46And then they went to the sphere with me, which blew our minds.
- 6:49Wow.
- 6:49Yeah.
- 6:50That was like over the top.
- 6:51That was their fifth show that they'd ever been to.
- 6:54They are going to put you in the nicest nursing home someday.
- 6:56They're both going to be nurses.
- 6:58So how old are they now?
- 7:00Almost 20 and 18.
- 7:02So they know like nurses is their career path.
- 7:06Yeah.
- 7:06Um, Laney's already accepted at UMO.
- 7:08She's a senior this year.
- 7:09Gracie ended up with a full boat.
- 7:11Nice.
- 7:12Yep.
- 7:12Cause I told her that I wouldn't pay for anything.
- 7:14Congratulations.
- 7:14Yeah.
- 7:15When she went from eighth grade into freshman year, I'm like, listen, kid, when you're eight,
- 7:18when you're 18, I'm doing okay, but I'm not giving you like, you are going to have to work
- 7:24your way through college.
- 7:25You're going to have to pay for it.
- 7:26They were right.
- 7:27Rick's writing that.
- 7:29Stop.
- 7:29Stop.
- 7:29You see, you just said it again.
- 7:31Shucks.
- 7:32Shuckity shucks.
- 7:33Um, I want the record to show for my parents that I have not yet cussed.
- 7:37Yes.
- 7:38Yes.
- 7:38I know.
- 7:38I'm like, ever.
- 7:39Well, now that I look, I don't know now that I'm not a business owner, I guess, or I kind
- 7:45of live a little bit more freely and I'm a little less careful, I guess, of what people
- 7:49see here or think, but that's a whole other, that's a whole other subject there.
- 7:53But, um, that's the next time you're in our studio, but the full boat, she got the full
- 7:57boat.
- 7:57Yeah.
- 7:57So I told her between eight and I said, look, I'm not, you have to claw and scratch away
- 8:00to the top.
- 8:01Um, I was like, if, if I help you, I think it'll disable you and you're going to have
- 8:05to do it the way that I did it, which was just grit and passion and, you know, a burning
- 8:09desire, as I would say, Napoleon Hill would say, you know, cause that was the first book
- 8:13I ever really read was thinking, grow rich, um, which is a whole other conversation, right?
- 8:17But so I told Gracie, look, you're on your own kid.
- 8:20Like I'll be your safety net, which fish calls the unbreakable net.
- 8:23Um, but you know, I'll be your safety net, but you're going to have to struggle.
- 8:27How did she take that?
- 8:28You had that conversation?
- 8:29She basically was like, yeah, uh, yeah.
- 8:31How did she take that?
- 8:32Between eighth grade and freshman year with both of them, actually, Laney's, they were
- 8:34their best friends.
- 8:35So they're like always together.
- 8:36And I made sure that they, when we put on an addition on the house, that their rooms
- 8:40are connected and they may, I made them share a room for their first eight years or so of
- 8:44their life.
- 8:44So they were really close.
- 8:45But I told Gracie, like, you're on your own.
- 8:47And she basically was like, hold my beer and went in and took every heart, the hardest
- 8:52class you signed up for every single extracurricular, you know, she did sports.
- 8:57She did all of it.
- 8:58Glee club and just all the clubs and Kiwanis and just did all of it.
- 9:02And I think you can apply for, I think, 24 scholarships, um, or something like that.
- 9:07And from Dexter and she got 22, I think, 24.
- 9:10So when they brought her up, so we have no idea, but this little scrapper, she went and
- 9:14visited all these colleges on her own without her mother, I even knowing she toured them
- 9:18by herself.
- 9:19Right.
- 9:19She didn't tell me anything.
- 9:20And then she applied for all these scholarships while her mother or I knowing, and then she
- 9:25goes out and I, so she's graduating high school.
- 9:27I know she's going to UMO.
- 9:28She was accepted.
- 9:29I have, and that's about all the information that she really gives me because she's so
- 9:32independent.
- 9:33And I remember being in Dexter regional high schools, Pitt, and it's old, it's old language.
- 9:41It's all right.
- 9:42The gym.
- 9:44Want me to bleep that out too?
- 9:48Sorry, Steve Bell.
- 9:50So I, yeah, he's, he works with the, he runs the waterfront concerts too, so I gotta be
- 9:54careful here.
- 9:55Um, he's the principal.
- 9:56So when they called her up, it was like, Gracie's going to UMO for nursing and her following
- 10:02scholarships are boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 10:06And I was like, wow, everybody's like looking at each other, like what the hell?
- 10:09I think she got paid $6,000 this last semester, like extra.
- 10:15Which I didn't know what could happen.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:17Like what did she do with that money?
- 10:19Did she use it for like housing or books or?
- 10:21She bought weed with it.
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:24No, I'm just kidding.
- 10:24She's never, that's she's, you have to bleep that out.
- 10:28Oh my, no, no.
- 10:29Okay.
- 10:29For some reason that's fine.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31For some reason that's okay.
- 10:32No, she, um, no, she started, uh, no, she, she brought her, she got an apartment.
- 10:37She wanted to get out of the dorms with it.
- 10:38And the reason I can joke about that, cause we've talked about everything.
- 10:40She's like my little best friend and we've had a conversation about all the things that
- 10:44parents are afraid of or whatever, but we just hit them head on.
- 10:48How old was she when you had that conversation?
- 10:50All the things that parents are afraid of.
- 10:51She would have been between 13 and 14.
- 10:53So it was part of the conversation.
- 10:54Well, no.
- 10:55Okay.
- 10:55That, that happened after I found out she had a boyfriend that like stole a car and
- 10:59broke into our house.
- 11:00Oh yeah.
- 11:00Yeah.
- 11:00That's when that happened.
- 11:01Yeah.
- 11:02Um, other than that, she's been a perfect kid other than letting this kid steal a car when
- 11:06he was 15 and drive it to the house.
- 11:07That's when the real conversation started.
- 11:09Okay.
- 11:09Let him steal a car.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:10I'm taking notes cause my kids are a little bit younger than that.
- 11:13Yeah.
- 11:13So I'm taking notes because I never got this conversation from my parents.
- 11:16And after we're done, I'd like you to give me the conversation.
- 11:18Yeah.
- 11:18Yeah.
- 11:1961.
- 11:19But I think I could still learn something.
- 11:21Oh yeah.
- 11:21Oh, this taught me a lot.
- 11:22This one I actually was, um, I got the information about what had happened and I was walking into
- 11:26the millows and I had my Southern teams down there, Wyndham and Skybro teams that were
- 11:31gathering on the boat to just have a get together.
- 11:33And did you have fish?
- 11:37I was going to laugh with me.
- 11:39I mean, you're kidding me.
- 11:40I'm bleeping.
- 11:41I'm bleeping that out.
- 11:42I'm supposed to be a team.
- 11:43He's bleeping it out.
- 11:4415, 13.30.
- 11:46What's the over under on this?
- 11:47So like I had just found out what would happen and she called me up and she was like, Hey,
- 11:51this is like, she's like that.
- 11:52I did something bad.
- 11:53Right.
- 11:53And I'm like, what is it?
- 11:54She's never said this to me before.
- 11:56So I was kind of thrown off.
- 11:57So she kind of told me what happened.
- 11:58And I literally remember walking onto the millows and my whole team's there.
- 12:01And I was like, everyone, I got to leave.
- 12:03And they're like, what?
- 12:04And I'm like, yeah, my daughter's boyfriend just stole a car and got caught trying to meet
- 12:09up with her.
- 12:10And it was really crazy.
- 12:12Just when I thought that you couldn't have any more evidence of your success as a parent.
- 12:17The fact that your kid did something quote unquote bad, okay.
- 12:22Some kids then would run from their parents, but instead ran to you.
- 12:27Yeah.
- 12:27She called me up and said, I need to talk to you.
- 12:29I did something bad.
- 12:29And this is what's weird about her is that she's never done anything like bad.
- 12:33She wasn't a kid that cried or argued or got grounded or neither one of them were.
- 12:36We still kind of wonder how that happened.
- 12:38I have to do like a DNA, like a trace back because I was, I was a little bit, I got
- 12:44a swab test here.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45We're going to have to do some kind of test there.
- 12:48So going back to ask you about your first fish, went Lori Air Force Base.
- 12:55Yeah.
- 12:56I was 17.
- 12:57And how much of it do you remember?
- 12:58Quite a bit of it.
- 12:59Yeah.
- 13:00It's quite a story actually, because it actually developed everything after that show literally
- 13:04set my path.
- 13:06Like I was completely reset at that show.
- 13:08Um, it had something to do with, you know, some, I don't know, a bag of mushrooms, let's
- 13:12just say it.
- 13:13I don't know.
- 13:13Okay.
- 13:13I'm pretty honest now these days.
- 13:14Uh, or I've always been honest, but I've always kept out information that I maybe would have
- 13:18or could have hurt maybe the image of a company.
- 13:21But now I I'm just me, right?
- 13:24And this is what happened.
- 13:25I started working when I was 10 at a farm and then I was hired at grants appliance at
- 13:2914.
- 13:30So that's three years before I actually went to the first fish show.
- 13:33So I had been working every summer and then I was doing service calls.
- 13:36And when I got my license at 16, I was able to do service calls and fix refrigerators.
- 13:40And you know, I was making pretty, I was making $25 a service call, which was crazy
- 13:43back then.
- 13:44Hmm.
- 13:45And I remember I bought an, um, a Dodge Daytona 500, I know it wasn't a 500, that's the race,
- 13:51a Dodge Daytona.
- 13:52No, it wasn't the Dodge Daytona with the little flip up lights, the nice little red sports
- 13:57car that I thought it was going to be cool, but I thought that maybe it'd make me cooler.
- 14:00So I bought a car and then I asked my parents, I was like, look, can I go up north and see
- 14:04some live music and go camping with my friends?
- 14:06And they're like, tell me more.
- 14:08I was like, no, you're just supposed to say yes.
- 14:10It's where I'm going north.
- 14:12I mean, what can happen up north?
- 14:13Like if I was like, Hey, I'm going to Boston and my friends, I thought I would've got some
- 14:16resistance, but no, it was like more questions came because I was 17 and I was like, okay,
- 14:21there's this band coming and they're fish and you know, you can camp there and you can
- 14:26hang out with your friends and you can watch live music.
- 14:27And they're like, no, that's a drug band.
- 14:29They're like Grateful Dead.
- 14:30No.
- 14:31Well, did they have that answer locked and loaded or they had to go do some research?
- 14:34No, I think that they just knew, like, I mean, I was a hardworking kid with good grades,
- 14:38but I also was like, let's go jump the dirt bike over two cars.
- 14:42And you know, I was a little bit on the wild side with me and my friends.
- 14:46So they were cautiously like, what are you doing?
- 14:48Did you ask close to the concert date after it had made all the news that fish was coming
- 14:53to do this big weekend party?
- 14:55Or did you ask?
- 14:56I know that's a really good question, but I, all I know is what happened.
- 14:59It was a no.
- 15:01I mean, I don't know why it was.
- 15:02I mean, with Gracie and Lainey, I probably would just say, go have fun because I think
- 15:06this is where I learned to, I think this is why they're good kids.
- 15:09I gave them a ton of room.
- 15:11I gave them a ton of room to make mistakes or to kind of figure it out on their own with
- 15:17me just making sure that they're safe, but also just not a helicopter parent.
- 15:22Right.
- 15:22And I think that's, it's kind of like the parent that cleans their house so well that
- 15:25their kid's always sick because they go out, you know what I mean?
- 15:28It's like, so I'm like rubbed dirt in it.
- 15:30Like when they get a cut kind of dad, you know, throw some dirt on it, walk it off.
- 15:33Yeah.
- 15:33So, and that's how I was brought up.
- 15:35So my parents gave me a lot of room.
- 15:38We grew up what we call middle of nowhere.
- 15:40It's Dexter, but it's on, you know, out of town and it's connected to my two, three
- 15:43other friends and it's two or three miles to the woods and through fields.
- 15:46And we'd ride our bikes.
- 15:47We had a beaten path through the woods.
- 15:48It was just one of those classic, you know, country kid type lifestyles.
- 15:52And, and I thought for sure my mom was just going to be like, yeah, go for it.
- 15:55Um, but I'm also like, I'm not real good with rules and boundaries.
- 15:58I think that's why I was a business owner.
- 16:00And I actually, I do know that's why I was a business owner.
- 16:02Um, and that's what I found out on this trip, literally.
- 16:06So, so yeah, yeah.
- 16:08So I, um, so they said no, but I remember it was like 20 or 25 cars all met up at
- 16:13Dexter variety and we all chained it up to the interstate.
- 16:16And because we knew how many people were coming, which was estimated between 70
- 16:20and a hundred thousand people on interstate 95 in Maine, we're like, this
- 16:24is going to be a disaster, right?
- 16:27There was 65 miles of backed up cars at that point.
- 16:31But we jumped ahead of it.
- 16:33I was like literally four blocks from the entrance to the show.
- 16:37But keep in mind, I have no idea.
- 16:38I didn't grow up listening to Grateful Dead.
- 16:40I wasn't into jam bands.
- 16:42Yeah.
- 16:42I just was like, wow, what is this frequency?
- 16:45Because they do play at a weird frequency.
- 16:47Fish does a good job of like, do you like me?
- 16:49Are you, do you hate me?
- 16:50Like there's no, there's not a whole lot in between.
- 16:52It's either you like scallops or you don't, you know, or you like seafood or you
- 16:56don't.
- 16:57And they did this on purpose with a certain frequency that they play with, which I
- 17:00didn't understand at the time, but, and everybody puts out their own, you know,
- 17:03with their own amplifier and their own PA system.
- 17:05And they can, they can put a vibration out that it'll either, and they didn't want
- 17:09to be big and famous and rich.
- 17:11They didn't give a about that.
- 17:13They, they love playing music together as friends.
- 17:15I know a lot more because I, now I'm in communication with them.
- 17:18You're in communication with fish.
- 17:20Yeah.
- 17:20That's going to be, I got to sort through some of the stuff that I can talk about
- 17:24and I can't talk about, um, as we fly here.
- 17:27Um, I'm usually pretty good at it on the fly, but I didn't mean to interrupt, but I
- 17:30just know that, yeah, that's an interesting nugget.
- 17:33We had talked about that.
- 17:34A lot has changed.
- 17:35I was going to say before we started, you know, don't say anything or don't tell us
- 17:39anything that you can't talk about, but just tell us what you can.
- 17:42I actually talked, I actually talked to a member on my way, uh, right before here.
- 17:47And I said, you know, give me some boundaries.
- 17:49He's like, you know, I'm like, okay, no, but this NDAs and stuff, you know, so on
- 17:54top of it, but yeah, this is a, this, this could be a three, this could be a nine
- 17:58hour podcast, you know, um, just about just that band itself.
- 18:02And also like, my name is MS six at, if we go to like, I'm the sixth member of the
- 18:08band, um, which I, which any band has to have the fifth member of CK five.
- 18:13So he's the lights guy.
- 18:14He's the guy that's been doing the improvisation on lights from the beginning.
- 18:19Um, so I, I always said that you can't have a band without a listener.
- 18:22Right.
- 18:22And I don't, I think music is magic.
- 18:25I'm starting to learn the guitar now, which is very difficult, especially with
- 18:28somebody like me that has to be going on, but it actually took my ADHD and it calmed
- 18:31it down.
- 18:32So I think I'm in a, I'm in a good zone here, but set the frequency.
- 18:36I don't know what it is.
- 18:37I think it's just like the absolute love and passion for improv.
- 18:40I think that making up live music in real time, that vulnerable, that's scary.
- 18:46And never repeating a song, the same song twice.
- 18:49And that one that they can't even duplicate.
- 18:50I think that's absolute magic.
- 18:52You know, it's like theater too.
- 18:54Like you go to theater and they, you've got one shot.
- 18:56There's no cuts and edits and all that stuff.
- 18:57That's like, that's real.
- 19:00It's okay.
- 19:00Don't worry about it.
- 19:0121.51.
- 19:03Matt said twice.
- 19:06Um, so the, so they basically, my parents said no.
- 19:09And I said, I'm going anyway, we get up to a Lauren air force base and this is
- 19:13going to kind of go against what I, I don't, it's not a drug band.
- 19:16It's, it's, you know, a lot of, and every single concert I've ever been to, there's
- 19:21weed being smoked in the, in the, you know what I mean?
- 19:23It's not, I think music gets, it's, is a gateway to could be anything.
- 19:28It could be a gateway to religion.
- 19:30It could be a gateway to your own self self awareness.
- 19:33It could be a awareness.
- 19:35It could be a gateway to doing cocaine.
- 19:36I don't know.
- 19:37Like a lot, a lot of people like experience what they experienced, but it's all about
- 19:41like your individual quest of like what you're looking for.
- 19:44And back then I was just like a wide open mind that it was just, I was a sponge that
- 19:48was just so hungry for experience, you know?
- 19:51And we were the wild kids that were out there on dirt bikes, like I said, and
- 19:54mountain bikes and just building tree houses and cabins and forts in the woods,
- 19:58you know, all that stuff.
- 19:58So we were just free kids really out in the country.
- 20:01And I didn't see anything different with this until I actually got there and I was
- 20:04like, wow, wow.
- 20:07Like I was like, not prepared.
- 20:09I'm 17 years old.
- 20:10I get a car, I've got a backpack with a couple, you know, a couple of t-shirts,
- 20:13maybe a change of underwear and you know, some Birkenstocks.
- 20:17And I remember I was maybe some sneakers and, and I just couldn't believe it.
- 20:20They, but back then we fish didn't have their stuff together.
- 20:23It seems like I just saved you some time there.
- 20:26They weren't, they didn't, they even at that time they were in their young
- 20:30twenties, so 24, 25, 26, 27, right in there.
- 20:33And like, I think Trey was 26.
- 20:35So this is their what second, third festival, second, Clifford, Clifford,
- 20:42when Clifford ball, then I think the great one.
- 20:45Yeah.
- 20:46So this is their second, yeah, 96, 97.
- 20:49This is 97.
- 20:49So their first one was 96, which is the 30th anniversary of the Clifford
- 20:54balls this year, which we can get to.
- 20:55I'm covering it.
- 20:56I'm duplicating it.
- 20:58Yeah.
- 20:5830,000 people.
- 20:59So I get, I get there and there's no vending.
- 21:02I have no, I'm not prepared.
- 21:03I don't have a girl with me.
- 21:04I don't have, I have a sleeping bag, a tent and a duffel bag.
- 21:07Your parents said no.
- 21:08Did they know that you went or was this?
- 21:10Well, no, they didn't know.
- 21:12I said I was going to Meg's house or Jeff's house or something like that.
- 21:14I lied to him straight up, lied like to their face.
- 21:18Yeah.
- 21:18Wow.
- 21:19I own that.
- 21:21Don't worry about it.
- 21:22No, don't worry about it.
- 21:23Don't worry about it.
- 21:24You know, when this episode comes out, it's just going to be one big, long tone.
- 21:31You let me know what the frequency should be.
- 21:33And I'll set it.
- 21:34You know how I got busted?
- 21:35How?
- 21:36Because I was, I literally was close enough to the gates.
- 21:39So when the gates opened up, everyone runs to get to the rail because everyone wants to be
- 21:43up front.
- 21:44I call them, we call them rail lizards.
- 21:46Now I could care less to be that close.
- 21:48I want to be actually back where the sound check is for the perfect sound.
- 21:52And I want to see CK5 rocked lights improbably.
- 21:55Now is that a word?
- 21:57It is now.
- 21:57It is now.
- 21:58We're going with it.
- 21:58So, cause I'd like to watch the six members of the band.
- 22:02Cause they groove.
- 22:03Everyone grew like, this is what's great about a fish show.
- 22:05Everyone is quiet most of the time, unless you're a rookie.
- 22:07But if you are like most of us now have good jobs, we're in our forties, forties or fifties,
- 22:12we can afford to go wherever they go.
- 22:15And we are so respectful and we're there.
- 22:17I mean, tickets now are big bucks for fish.
- 22:19I mean, they get, so this is part of the quest is that fish sells their tickets very cheap.
- 22:23And then people buy them and then sell them for like thousands.
- 22:25Yeah.
- 22:25And I'm the that buys them for that because I am too busy to try to get in the lottery.
- 22:30And I'm trying to busy to try to get in that 32nd window of sold out.
- 22:34You know what I mean?
- 22:35So I'm always buying StubHub third-party making the problem worse.
- 22:38Actually, most of my tickets are five, six, seven, $800 a night, you know, and I'll buy
- 22:42four or five men in a row.
- 22:43Right.
- 22:43You know, cause I don't want to miss one.
- 22:45Yeah.
- 22:45So every time I go to a long fish show, we're talking five grand at least.
- 22:49So that's the kind of crowd that you have there.
- 22:51So we're very, we're there to hear the music and see the art.
- 22:53And so there's no talking.
- 22:55And if there is, it's like next to your buddy in the ear.
- 22:58So you can't hear.
- 22:59It's not like the, sorry if this offends anybody, but you go to the Bangor waterfront,
- 23:03there's a country concert.
- 23:04It's just a lot of alcohol, a lot of loud people, a lot of people talking.
- 23:08It's just, I can't handle it.
- 23:09I need, I need to be part of it.
- 23:11You need to focus in.
- 23:12I need to focus in on it.
- 23:13And that's really what a hardcore fish fan is, which they've developed.
- 23:16That's a bunch of us together when they're, we're waiting for these moments that you just
- 23:22never are ready for that.
- 23:23They're not even ready for it, which they've explained to me, you know, they're like,
- 23:26they're part of it too.
- 23:27They're witnessing what they're doing at in real time.
- 23:30How do they keep making it happen?
- 23:32That is a, I'll get to that.
- 23:34Okay.
- 23:34Cause that's a big one.
- 23:35That's a, that's a long answer.
- 23:37Um, but, but this particular concert, I ran up to get in front and then on the Bangor daily,
- 23:42here I am, arms out, you know, the white Hanes t-shirt on, I stuck out like a sore thumb and I
- 23:51got home.
- 23:54Wow.
- 23:55Yeah.
- 23:55And my sister told on me that I eat mushrooms and yeah, but that.
- 23:59How did your sister know you ate mushrooms?
- 24:01That's Dexter high school.
- 24:02I graduated in a 90 people, you know, you know, so yeah, it leaked out pretty quick.
- 24:07Had that conversation.
- 24:07And not only that, but I grew a beard and, you know, overnight and, and completely changed.
- 24:12No, just kidding.
- 24:15Yeah, no, but it did change me forever.
- 24:18I mean, it really did.
- 24:18I mean, like they talk about that kind of substance being used for like vets and stuff
- 24:23that are completely traumatized and they can change overnight.
- 24:26It's true.
- 24:27And I don't think it's in a bad way.
- 24:28I think it creates such a pivotal thing.
- 24:30You know, it really opens your eyes up to what's beyond your ego or you, or even where we are
- 24:35in space.
- 24:36You know, it really expands your brain.
- 24:38And especially when you're 17, like my brain was just like, what is this?
- 24:42And, and it just showed me, I remember the song, it was run like an antelope came on
- 24:47and it's just starts off like run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run,
- 24:51run, run, run.
- 24:52You know?
- 24:52And it just goes like that.
- 24:53And then it's like, run like an antelope out of control.
- 24:55And I was like, wow.
- 24:57And I separated myself from my pack and I went up and I just sat against the fence.
- 25:01And I was just like in awe of, I was having this experience.
- 25:04I mean, I hate the whole thing.
- 25:06You're not supposed to do that.
- 25:07I didn't know that.
- 25:08You know, I'm a kid from Dexter and I was just like sitting on the sidelines with these
- 25:11lights and these lyrics and these people.
- 25:13And I was just like, this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life.
- 25:16And that run, run, run was like run from society, run from the man, do not work for somebody
- 25:21else.
- 25:21Like be free.
- 25:22Don't be indoctrinated by a school.
- 25:24Like that's all the things that were rushing in from me, from, I guess, my higher self,
- 25:28what I call it now.
- 25:29Did you carry that moment when you went back home and you found your photo circled in front
- 25:34of the PDM?
- 25:35I didn't care because I knew what I was going to do.
- 25:37I was going to buy that company I was working for.
- 25:38I was going to change it to Scott's Appliance and I was going to be a free man.
- 25:42You know, I didn't want a boss.
- 25:43I didn't want, it just highlighted indoctrination.
- 25:46Like I looked at the most beautiful people I've ever seen.
- 25:49You've got doctors, you've got lawyers, you've got brain surgeons.
- 25:51I know this because on my way to fish Mexico this last year, I'm sitting next to a heart
- 25:55surgeon and a brain surgeon and I'm in the middle and they're married and I'm like, are
- 25:59you guys fighting or something?
- 26:00Like, why am I there?
- 26:00I found out that they're married and they're like, no, we're just like, we're having a hard
- 26:03time flying to fish because it's the only place that we can actually let go of how many people
- 26:08are going to die when we're not at work.
- 26:09What?
- 26:10They're a heart surgeon and a brain surgeon.
- 26:12They're married.
- 26:12And they're like, think about it.
- 26:14There's always somebody and they live in Boston.
- 26:17So they're at one of the best hospitals you could possibly get any kind of like, like
- 26:23say I slipped out here because Rick didn't saw, you know, the steps, which I know he's
- 26:27not very good at.
- 26:28Not very good at.
- 26:28There's no, there's no, that, that, that, that walkway's fine.
- 26:31Yeah, well, we'll have to take a second look, but let's just say, for instance, I slip,
- 26:34I fall, I crack my head and I've got, I need brain surgery, which probably is the case anyway,
- 26:39but they would get me directly to this doctor and they'd be like, okay, you need to save
- 26:44his life.
- 26:45Well, sorry, he's out of fish.
- 26:46No, they don't tell them that they, but they, these surgeons that are saving lives, they
- 26:50don't have breaks.
- 26:51You know, I just talked to my accountant.
- 26:52He's like, I will be sleeping, eating and doing taxes until after the 15th.
- 26:58Well, when you're a brain surgeon or a heart surgeon, it's like, you could be at home sleeping
- 27:03while you're supposed to be doing something else.
- 27:04And then it's like, Hey, we've got this five-year-old that's coming in with, you know, they're going
- 27:08to do it.
- 27:09Right.
- 27:09So they really put it, this is just happened this year, going to Mexico.
- 27:12They really, really took when I was this escape from reality in order to reset, in order
- 27:18to go back to my professional job.
- 27:19That's what it was.
- 27:20It was recess.
- 27:21I called it recess or I called it never, never land.
- 27:23Did you share this with them?
- 27:25I mean, oh yeah, we, we became best friends.
- 27:27I mean, I, I have them in my phone now.
- 27:28This is what's else is cool.
- 27:29If you type fish in my phone, there'll be 200 people that pop up and it'll be like Christy
- 27:33bubbles, MSG floor, you know, or there's always like a little hint to whoever they are.
- 27:37But now we, I developed an app in the last week that yeah, it's going to connect everybody.
- 27:42Yeah.
- 27:42That's a whole, that's a whole other vein.
- 27:44We can smart.
- 27:45Yeah.
- 27:45I mean, it's so cool.
- 27:46And it's going to take a ticket master after you sell you a ticket for more than what it's
- 27:51worth is absolutely insane.
- 27:53It is.
- 27:53It's it's not, it shouldn't happen.
- 27:55We're going to take over ticket master and I hope they're listening and I'd stop hub.
- 27:58It's not going to happen anymore.
- 28:00If you buy a ticket for no matter what, and you try to upsell it and you have bots working
- 28:03for you, it's going to be in the fine print.
- 28:05If you do that and you sell that ticket to somebody else digitally, it's going to go
- 28:08into a pool called the miracle pool.
- 28:10And we're going to send teachers that can't afford it.
- 28:12We're going to send law enforcement.
- 28:14We're going to send, we're going to my mom of four that can't afford to go on these trips
- 28:17with air flight tickets.
- 28:19All of it's going to be miracled to them from people that are trying to steal.
- 28:22That is incredible.
- 28:22Yeah.
- 28:23And I'll, I mean, this is a big problem.
- 28:25You know, it's a big problem.
- 28:26Taylor Swift is, I guess the pinnacle of the big problem.
- 28:29Everybody.
- 28:30I tried to get tickets for my youngest daughter.
- 28:33She's a fan of a new artist named Freya Sky.
- 28:36Probably haven't heard of her.
- 28:37Most people haven't.
- 28:39She was in Zombies 4 on the Disney channel.
- 28:41Has a single out that is a catchy tune.
- 28:44She has her first EP out.
- 28:45I tried to get tickets for her on the pre-sale and then the on sale.
- 28:49A lot of work.
- 28:49I was in the queue an hour before they went on sale, completely sold out within seconds.
- 28:53Sure.
- 28:54And it was all bots.
- 28:55It's all bots.
- 28:55And so I was faced with, do I not take my daughter to this show, which ended up happening,
- 29:00or do I pay $700 a ticket for an artist that has one song on some radio stations?
- 29:05It's nuts.
- 29:05And it's just crazy.
- 29:06It's crazy.
- 29:07Sphere right now, Phish.
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:09Those tickets, I went in the lottery.
- 29:10This is nuts.
- 29:11I went in for all of them, which would have been $5,800 for all of them.
- 29:16So they're playing all three weekends, three shows.
- 29:19So total of nine shows, but they're, I think they're going to nine shows.
- 29:25And, uh, and it would have been $5,800.
- 29:28Now it's $7,000 a night.
- 29:32So it's a problem.
- 29:33And if this is kind of galactic, and I have a tribe called the galactic tribe that we
- 29:39got together and I ended up being miracled into, I could just keep going.
- 29:43This is like the craziest that happened to me.
- 29:45Um, Phish, Mexico.
