- 0:04Speaker 1: on demand on the iHeartRadio.
- 0:10Speaker 2: App. And now, Handel on the News.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, here's not Bill Handel.
- 0:23Speaker 4: KFI AM 640 live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Good
- 0:27Speaker 4: Monday morning to you. Neil Savedra, the morning crew handles
- 0:30Speaker 4: out on vacation. Anybody see any of his photos? They're
- 0:35Speaker 4: starting to post some photos. He was doing some dancing
- 0:38Speaker 4: from what I saw. Very fancy. Yeah, very fancy little
- 0:43Speaker 4: soft shoe in the desert. Yeah, some hopping and. You know,
- 0:49Speaker 4: usually you see those things with groups of people, and
- 0:52Speaker 4: it looked like it was a private.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Instance.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Maybe, I don't know, maybe there were other people off
- 1:00Speaker 4: the side, but interesting nonetheless.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But to good morning, all the Southland.
- 1:06Speaker 4: We made it. We made it till Monday through that
- 1:10Speaker 4: horrible heat wave.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And, boy.
- 1:15Speaker 4: What a weekend. What a weekend indeed. I hope yours
- 1:19Speaker 4: was cool. My first good morning goes to Will, who
- 1:23Speaker 4: was very kind to set me up this morning as
- 1:25Speaker 4: I am out here in.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Long Beach at Total Traffic. Good morning. And Weather Network,
- 1:31Speaker 2: our sister partners here.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Hope they're taking good care of you.
- 1:34Speaker 2: The breakfast burritos across the hall are amazing. Oh, great.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Everybody's wonderful here. And by the skin of my teeth,
- 1:42Speaker 4: we are.
- 1:43Speaker 5: On the air.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Because, you know, I don't know.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It's every time you go somewhere new, you have to
- 1:48Speaker 4: log in differently and all these different things.
- 1:50Speaker 2: So I appreciate it.
- 1:52Speaker 4: I know it took a lot of people here at
- 1:54Speaker 4: TCWN and Will to put make sure I had a
- 1:57Speaker 4: place because today. After we get off the air, I'm
- 2:00Speaker 4: heading over to the Aquarium of the Pacific right here
- 2:02Speaker 4: in the LBC for Senior Day. And I hope any
- 2:06Speaker 4: of you that got tickets already, because I think it's
- 2:09Speaker 4: sold out, that you come by and say, hi, I'll
- 2:11Speaker 4: have a table. We'll be giving away some things. And
- 2:13Speaker 4: it's just an opportunity for me to say hello to
- 2:16Speaker 4: you all. And that will be great coming up a
- 2:20Speaker 4: little bit later.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Kono, how are you? How was fishing?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Fishing was great. What did you catch?
- 2:26Speaker 6: Just a trout, a rainbow trout. But many of them,
- 2:29Speaker 6: we caught, you know, our limit every day.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And did you cook them and eat them? We do.
- 2:36Speaker 6: We try to go back to the cabin and a
- 2:39Speaker 6: lot of butter.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Oh, and garlic. And cook them.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Because we used to just.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Take them home and then have them in foil. And
- 2:47Speaker 6: then three years later, we go, oh, yeah, fish.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 4: There's nothing better, though, when you are fishing to clean them.
- 2:58Speaker 4: And eat them right there. Grill them up in the skin.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Take the head off.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Take the stuff you don't want on the insides.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:06Speaker 2: A little foil, a little garlic, a little butter, a
- 3:08Speaker 2: little salt and pepper.
- 3:09Speaker 3: You do get over your fear of bees when you're
- 3:11Speaker 3: cleaning fish. I'll tell you that.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Yeah. There's just so many bees around you that you're like,
- 3:15Speaker 6: you've got to get this done.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's nature, man. I know. I know.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Everybody wants a piece of that nature, that good time feeling.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Where do you guys go? What lake do you guys
- 3:24Speaker 2: go to?
- 3:25Speaker 3: We go up to Bishop. I'm not going to tell
- 3:27Speaker 3: you the lake. No, I'm just kidding. It's at Sabrina.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Sabrina.
- 3:29Speaker 4: That's where I used to. That's what I thought. That's
- 3:31Speaker 4: where I used to fish. Sabrina is great. It's a
- 3:36Speaker 4: little up there, but it's great. No service and nobody
- 3:41Speaker 4: can bother you.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It's great.
- 3:44Speaker 4: That's why you didn't return our calls. I had service
- 3:48Speaker 4: at that point. I had service, just not for you.
- 3:52Speaker 4: And Amy King, how are you?
- 3:54Speaker 5: Doing great.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Doing great.
- 3:56Speaker 5: A little sad that my Dodgers lost last night.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That's, yeah. Well, I get the traffic over there regardless
- 4:04Speaker 2: if they win or lose.
- 4:05Speaker 5: So what do you care?
- 4:08Speaker 2: No, I do want them to win, of course. I do, too.
- 4:12Speaker 4: But is that all you did this weekend? All you
- 4:15Speaker 4: had the energy to in the heat wave?
- 4:18Speaker 5: No, I planted some flowers. I had dinner at lunch
- 4:22Speaker 5: with my brother. Did a little cleaning.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You planted in this heat?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 5: I mean, it's just in a, it's on my balcony.
- 4:32Speaker 5: It's in little planters. I was sitting in the shade
- 4:34Speaker 5: the whole time.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I see. Well, I'm talking about the flowers too.
- 4:38Speaker 5: I'm keeping them well watered.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Okay. Excellent. Excellent.
- 4:44Speaker 4: And what was I going to just ask you about
- 4:47Speaker 4: the weekend? Oh, well, I guess we can turn it
- 4:50Speaker 4: towards the new side of it. Are we looking at
- 4:52Speaker 4: another six, seven days of The high heat?
- 4:54Speaker 5: At least four. They're supposed to cool down some for
- 4:56Speaker 5: the weekend. Forecasters are saying it may extend, but then
- 5:00Speaker 5: I've also seen longer range forecasts that are showing, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 5: like 80s by Saturday, which.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Would be great.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Lovely. Lovely indeed.
- 5:10Speaker 5: I still want it to cool off so I can
- 5:12Speaker 5: wear my cool Halloween sweaters.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Yeah, you were looking for fall weather. It does not
- 5:18Speaker 4: seem like fall. And we will have to see when
- 5:21Speaker 4: that change is made. But I used to, you know,
- 5:24Speaker 4: I have deep memories rooted in my hair brain of
- 5:30Speaker 4: walking home from school as a young kid from, you know,
- 5:33Speaker 4: Maple Elementary School there in Newberry Park.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And.
- 5:38Speaker 4: The wind coming in and that, that certain change into
- 5:42Speaker 4: fall that was to me, Halloween meant Halloween was around
- 5:45Speaker 4: the corner and we were going to get free candy. And, uh,
- 5:49Speaker 4: I'm waiting for that. I'm waiting for that.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 5: You, when you walk out in the morning to go
- 5:55Speaker 5: to your car, you feel that little chill. It just,
- 5:58Speaker 5: it's a little subtle change, but we're not feeling.
- 6:02Speaker 3: It this week.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And yeah. And then you start watching spooky stuff and,
- 6:08Speaker 2: Kid spooky stuff. What was that? Halloween Town or whatever
- 6:11Speaker 2: that I used to watch back in the day.
- 6:13Speaker 5: You know, I just recently watched that because I was like,
- 6:16Speaker 5: I need to find some good Halloween stuff.
- 6:17Speaker 2: That's not very good. No, but it's for when you're
- 6:20Speaker 2: a kid.
- 6:21Speaker 4: So when you watch it now, you're watching it based
- 6:24Speaker 4: on from when you were younger. No, none of that
- 6:28Speaker 4: stuff holds up well. And then Hocus Pocus, of course,
- 6:33Speaker 4: then Hocus Pocus 2.
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:35Speaker 5: I love those. Come on. And I'm getting ready to
- 6:40Speaker 5: watch Nightmare Before Christmas.
- 6:43Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 6:44Speaker 2: All the good ones.
- 6:45Speaker 5: It's October.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And last but never least, how are you doing, Anne?
- 6:50Speaker 5: I'm doing fantastic.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Keeping you on your toes this morning, my dear?
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Yes.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Till the very end. Yes. We're all good. All righty.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Let's get on to Handle on the News. Lead story. Okay,
- 7:07Speaker 2: so this came up yesterday.
- 7:09Speaker 4: I saw it on my news feed that the U.S.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Air Force removed all of its bombers from the U.K. Now,
- 7:14Speaker 4: this is all based on that story that we had
- 7:17Speaker 4: heard a few weeks ago or what have you when
- 7:19Speaker 4: the security incident took place there. You had five British men,
- 7:23Speaker 4: one U.K., Iranian, national last month. And the Pentagon spokesperson
- 7:30Speaker 4: came out and confirmed to CBS News just yesterday that
- 7:34Speaker 4: that any of our bombers are leaving. There's so much
- 7:43Speaker 4: going on that it's hard to keep track of what
- 7:46Speaker 4: and why. So it just seemed to, in this particular case,
- 7:51Speaker 4: that there's a strong indication of sorts that Iran played
- 7:55Speaker 4: a part in what happened there.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Over that weekend. But the investigation's ongoing.
- 8:03Speaker 4: So I'm assuming out of a multitude of caution, we
- 8:08Speaker 4: are out of there.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Well, it's a miracle this flight made it at all.
- 8:14Speaker 5: And now we're getting more details about the co-pilot on
- 8:19Speaker 5: that Dubai Air flight. So when Dubai Air hired this
- 8:25Speaker 5: co-pilot that was on the flight that came dangerously close
- 8:28Speaker 5: to crashing, It didn't contact Oman to vet his experience.
- 8:33Speaker 5: He is from Oman, used to work for an airline
- 8:37Speaker 5: in Oman.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 4: And I was listening to you this morning on wake
- 8:40Speaker 4: up call and you had Jordana Miller on. And man,
- 8:44Speaker 4: this seems like the easiest flag in the world.
- 8:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 2: They've thrown up.
- 8:48Speaker 5: They banned him from flying because they decided that his
- 8:52Speaker 5: online habits and his interest in radical ideology. Were a
- 8:59Speaker 5: bad thing. So they grounded him, kept him from flying,
- 9:04Speaker 5: sent him to a de-radicalization program, and then gave him
- 9:08Speaker 5: a desk job. But they didn't flag the concerns more broadly.
- 9:14Speaker 5: And so when Dubai Air went to hire him, they
- 9:19Speaker 5: did a background check and it didn't come up with this.
- 9:23Speaker 5: And he's the one, of course, who allegedly stabbed the pilot.
- 9:28Speaker 5: actually hacked at the pilot with.
- 9:29Speaker 2: A with an axe because.
- 9:32Speaker 5: All the the cockpits all have axes in them and
- 9:36Speaker 5: he got into that axe because they needed if they
- 9:40Speaker 5: need to like smash out a windshield or.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Under the guise of i'm gonna pray behind.
- 9:44Speaker 5: You yeah he asked the pilot he said i gotta
- 9:46Speaker 5: go pray and the pilot said okay he reached back
- 9:49Speaker 5: apparently got the axe and attacked the pilot with it.
- 9:52Speaker 2: At the neck and he protected his neck with his hands, smart.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Yep.
- 9:57Speaker 4: And, you know, fingers are no the better. But your
- 10:02Speaker 4: neck with two massive arteries on either side, probably a
- 10:07Speaker 4: great point to protect.
- 10:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:09Speaker 4: This turns to doctors in Newsom. Doctors and health insurers
- 10:14Speaker 4: are filing a lawsuit. I think they filed this just
- 10:17Speaker 4: this past Friday, as a matter of fact. alleging that GovGav, Newsom,
- 10:22Speaker 4: and the legislature violated the law when they approved the
- 10:25Speaker 4: health care tax that could substantially increase insurance premiums for Californians.
- 10:32Speaker 4: So in this lawsuit, the big claim is the recently
- 10:35Speaker 4: passed tax on health plan known as the Managed Care
- 10:41Speaker 4: Organization Tax or MCO tax. that it's circumventing a 2024
- 10:47Speaker 4: initiative that limits health care taxes and directs revenue toward
- 10:52Speaker 4: specific purposes. So the California Medical Association and California Association
- 10:57Speaker 4: of Health Plans filed the complaint with the California Supreme Court.
- 11:03Speaker 4: They said, you know, when Californians and the voters here, us, we,
- 11:08Speaker 4: the people, passed Proposition 35 and made it law, that
- 11:13Speaker 4: the state does not get to ignore that law simply.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Because following the law is inconvenient.
- 11:21Speaker 5: All aboard, cost you more. Metrolink fares are going up
- 11:26Speaker 5: starting today. One-way passes are increasing in Average of 14 percent.
- 11:33Speaker 5: The SoCal day pass is going up to $ 19 on weekdays,
- 11:37Speaker 5: $ 12 on weekends and holidays. Officials say they had to
- 11:43Speaker 5: do this because of increased operating and maintenance costs and
- 11:47Speaker 5: reduced ridership, along with declining state and federal funding.
- 11:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Provocative sexual suggestive ad. You heard Amy talking about this
- 11:59Speaker 4: earlier as well. And we'll get into it in the
- 12:03Speaker 4: seven o'clock hour going over this in the state of
- 12:07Speaker 4: campaigning in the new world here. But this sexually suggestive
- 12:13Speaker 4: ad for Steve Hilton running for governor, obviously. has gotten,
- 12:20Speaker 4: you know, raised some eyebrows. It's got two young women
- 12:23Speaker 4: sitting on a bed. Maybe you heard about it with
- 12:25Speaker 4: an LGBTQ plus flag in the background. One urging the
- 12:29Speaker 4: other to try a new experience. I can't believe I'm
- 12:36Speaker 4: doing this, one woman says. And the other replies, don't
- 12:39Speaker 4: be nervous. It's not that bad. Just try it. Look,
- 12:44Speaker 4: give me your hand. Close your eyes and I'll do
- 12:46Speaker 4: all the work. And then she leads the hesitant woman's
- 12:50Speaker 4: hand to mark her ballot for Hilton rather than the
- 12:53Speaker 4: Democrat Becerra. And the front runner of the race says. Wait,
- 13:00Speaker 4: who is now the front runner of the race, sorry,
- 13:03Speaker 4: bad read, but then says now lick it, referring to
- 13:07Speaker 4: the ballot envelope.
- 13:09Speaker 2: The hell's wrong with us? Ah, okay.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Well, we'll get into that a little bit more later
- 13:16Speaker 4: on and the state of affairs there.
- 13:19Speaker 5: Well, first they tried to kill her and now they're
- 13:22Speaker 5: fighting to keep her alive. Krista Pike was sentenced to
- 13:26Speaker 5: death in Tennessee for her role in the brutal murder
- 13:30Speaker 5: and torture of another young woman in 1995. As you've
- 13:36Speaker 5: heard us talking about, they tried to execute her last week.
- 13:40Speaker 5: But they put the phenylbarbitol just into her body. It
- 13:44Speaker 5: didn't hit her vein. And so it was enough to
- 13:46Speaker 5: knock her out, but it didn't kill her. So they
- 13:48Speaker 5: called off the execution, took her to the hospital. And
- 13:52Speaker 5: now they're fighting to keep her alive. She's on a
- 13:54Speaker 5: ventilator and is unconscious, apparently.
- 13:59Speaker 4: It is a weird dichotomy, for lack of a better term,
- 14:03Speaker 4: to go kill.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops, whoops. Safe, safe, safe, safe, safe, safe, safe.
- 14:10Speaker 4: In that story, you'd think. I mean, as horrible as
- 14:15Speaker 4: it is, if you saw an animal suffering, wouldn't you
- 14:18Speaker 4: kill it? Like it was beyond repair. And it's only suffering.
- 14:27Speaker 4: I know it's hard to do, but I had to
- 14:30Speaker 4: do that with a rat once. Somebody in the neighborhood
- 14:33Speaker 4: used a. One of those sticky traps. and it had
- 14:40Speaker 4: torn off its appendages and stuff. And I was, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 4: I used to raise rats. I liked little rats and
- 14:49Speaker 4: I had to take its life and then cry like
- 14:52Speaker 4: a baby. But I thought that was better than it suffering.
- 14:57Speaker 4: And it sounds like she's, listen, I'm all for her suffering.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Sorry. Uh, maybe I'm a jerk for that, but I'm
- 15:03Speaker 2: all for her suffering. I just think, okay.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Uh, This is a sad story and scary as hell
- 15:09Speaker 4: when you think about the randomness and all the things
- 15:14Speaker 4: we have to deal with in life as it is,
- 15:16Speaker 4: let alone this tiny little bug. Family of a 13-year-old
- 15:19Speaker 4: boy from the LBC in Long Beach asking for help.
- 15:26Speaker 4: He remains hospitalized, and it's this rare disease, and they've
- 15:30Speaker 4: linked it to West Nile virus, which means little Joseph–
- 15:36Speaker 4: who's bedridden now at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for three
- 15:40Speaker 4: weeks now, that this came from a mosquito bite.
- 15:48Speaker 2: How scary.
- 15:49Speaker 4: It's neurologic, super rare, but it's very real. It's all
- 15:59Speaker 4: hands on deck for this young boy, Joseph Vasquez, and
- 16:07Speaker 4: he's lost mobility in his legs. He's having difficulty lifting
- 16:11Speaker 4: his head. Doctors are unsure at this point if he's
- 16:16Speaker 4: even going to regain any of this mobility. The Vasquez
- 16:21Speaker 4: family has started a GoFundMe page, help pay for medical expenses.
- 16:26Speaker 4: As of Sunday night, fundraiser raised, it was at $ 3, 000.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So I'm not sure.
- 16:33Speaker 4: I'm looking to see if there's a specific name for it,
- 16:38Speaker 4: should you feel moved to do it. But the boy's
- 16:41Speaker 4: name is Joseph Vasquez. And just keep in mind, there's
- 16:43Speaker 4: some bad people out there at times, and we'll put
- 16:46Speaker 4: fake ones up there. So make sure you read the
- 16:49Speaker 4: small print. All right, you want to try for one
- 16:51Speaker 4: more there, Amy?
- 16:54Speaker 5: Yeah, the plague may have surfaced in Russia. A laboratory
- 16:58Speaker 5: worker has died. at the Anti-Plague Research Institute. Apparently that's
- 17:06Speaker 5: in Siberia. There was some sort of a lab accident
- 17:10Speaker 5: and a lab worker is said to have died after
- 17:13Speaker 5: being diagnosed with a pneumonia of unknown origin. They've got
- 17:18Speaker 5: about 200 people quarantined apparently because of this. Although they
- 17:22Speaker 5: said there's no plague.
- 17:25Speaker 2: No, of course not. Merely a flesh wound. I'm all right.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Nobel medicine prize goes to three different scientists for research
- 17:36Speaker 4: into brain activity. Very little here with me this morning,
- 17:41Speaker 4: by the way, but good for them. So these three scientists,
- 17:45Speaker 4: they created this tool using light and it is.
- 17:51Speaker 2: In its state going to.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Help unravel how our little gray matter, that stuff between
- 17:57Speaker 4: our ears works.
- 17:58Speaker 2: So you have Peter.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Hedgeman, 71, Carl.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Disaroth.
- 18:06Speaker 4: You want to get these names right. These people are brilliant.
- 18:09Speaker 4: And George Nagel. And they've carried out this research into
- 18:15Speaker 4: a light gated ion channels and optogenetics. So crazy work.
- 18:24Speaker 4: It's all about finding out certain mysteries in the brain.
- 18:28Speaker 4: And it's based this one of the scientists here based
- 18:32Speaker 4: in Stanford University in California. And then there's one at
- 18:35Speaker 4: Humboldt and there's one in Germany. And they were started.
- 18:41Speaker 4: It all started when they were exploring how a single
- 18:44Speaker 4: cell type of green algae can swim toward light.
- 18:50Speaker 2: And then they.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Discovered a particular protein that when illuminated by blue light,
- 18:56Speaker 4: opens a channel to create this electrical impulse. And that
- 18:59Speaker 4: puts the protein into other cells, makes them light sensitive.
- 19:03Speaker 4: And through this ability to put it into a gene
- 19:08Speaker 4: and control that protein to create light controlled switch nerve cells.
- 19:11Speaker 4: So it's almost like sort of not remote control, but
- 19:15Speaker 4: sort of being able to Navigate.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Around in there, which is pretty crazy. But fascinating.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Victimized again. The woman known as Jane Doe at Cornell University,
- 19:35Speaker 5: who accused members of the Chi Phi fraternity of gang
- 19:39Speaker 5: raping her, is being targeted with threats, according to her lawyers.
- 19:44Speaker 5: He says people have threatened to silence or harm her
- 19:47Speaker 5: if she doesn't withdraw the civil lawsuit. that alleges several
- 19:51Speaker 5: members of Cornell's Chi Phi fraternity drugged her and raped
- 19:54Speaker 5: her in 2024. The lawyer also said that it didn't
- 19:59Speaker 5: help that President Trump said the accused won't get a
- 20:02Speaker 5: fair shake after New York's Governor Kathy Hochul named New
- 20:06Speaker 5: York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor in
- 20:10Speaker 5: the case. Of course, Letitia James and President Trump have
- 20:15Speaker 5: a contentious relationship.
- 20:17Speaker 3: To say the least.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Yeah, not really a relationship much at all. And she
- 20:22Speaker 4: went after him, and you know how he feels about
- 20:24Speaker 4: all of that. So, as you heard earlier on Wake
- 20:30Speaker 4: Up Call with Amy King, Jackie bringing people together again.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Of course, this beautiful famed American Eagle. And people gathered
- 20:41Speaker 4: up there in Big Bear on Saturday to say goodbye.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And that's very sweet. Housings came out. That's really neat.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Now, the area there, that's the first, I think that's,
- 20:56Speaker 4: isn't that the first snow park on your way up the.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Mountain that they had this at?
- 21:03Speaker 5: I am not 100% sure.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I'm just thinking like I'm going up, uh, the hill.
- 21:09Speaker 2: I think so.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Well, either way they got together, her unexpected passing left
- 21:13Speaker 4: fans around the world.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Grieving him and King. And, um, Oh, I grieved. Yeah,
- 21:21Speaker 2: I know.
- 21:22Speaker 4: So it was, uh, uh, really sweet. Uh, it was a, uh,
- 21:26Speaker 4: you know, a lot of people coming together because they
- 21:29Speaker 4: had connected with all of this during, uh, During the stream,
- 21:34Speaker 4: being able to watch on the stream. I mean, you
- 21:36Speaker 4: go on there at four in the morning and it's
- 21:39Speaker 4: 64,000 people or something watching this live stream.
- 21:42Speaker 5: Waiting for those eggs to hatch, yeah.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Beautiful thing.
- 21:46Speaker 1: It is.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And that's in all the ugliness that we get these days.
- 21:49Speaker 4: It's nice to see something like that kind of taking
- 21:53Speaker 4: people's energy and time.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Okay, one more.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Okay.
- 22:01Speaker 1: A nurse.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Got a quick conviction. Nicole Linton was convicted on second-degree
- 22:10Speaker 5: murder charges after about three hours of jury deliberations in
- 22:14Speaker 5: downtown L.A. She was facing six counts of second-degree murder.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Her attorney contended that Linton had suffered a seizure that
- 22:25Speaker 5: left her unable to stop her speeding Mercedes-Benz, but it
- 22:29Speaker 5: crashed immediately. In the intersection of La Brea and Slauson Avenues,
- 22:34Speaker 5: on August 4th, 2022, not only were six people killed,
- 22:38Speaker 5: nine others, including Linton, were injured. Nine vehicles were involved
- 22:42Speaker 5: in the crash. It was a nasty one.
- 22:47Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Construction is starting on what? An eight-foot MacArthur Park fence.
- 22:54Speaker 4: It's going to begin next week. And this is the
- 22:58Speaker 4: Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Obviously going out there,
- 23:03Speaker 4: it's this big green metal fence, which tends to be
- 23:05Speaker 4: what you see around some parks in Los Angeles.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's going to start in November.
- 23:12Speaker 4: It's expected to be completed by spring of 2027. And
- 23:18Speaker 4: once finished, Gates Run the Park will close nightly from
- 23:21Speaker 4: 10 p.m.
- 23:22Speaker 2: To 6 a.m.
- 23:24Speaker 4: And restricting access. So the reason why I chuckle about
- 23:27Speaker 4: this a little bit is a couple of things. One,
- 23:30Speaker 4: this is dealing with a lot of the problems. This
- 23:34Speaker 4: is part of dealing with a lot of problems there
- 23:36Speaker 4: at MacArthur Park, including robberies and drug deals and a
- 23:41Speaker 4: lot of horrible things that go on at this place.
- 23:44Speaker 4: And I'm not far from it. I don't live far
- 23:46Speaker 4: from MacArthur Park. And it used to be a beautiful,
- 23:50Speaker 4: beautiful park. I almost got arrested just outside of it
- 23:54Speaker 4: one time on live on the air here on KFI
- 23:57Speaker 4: back in the Tim and Neil show days. So it
- 23:58Speaker 4: holds a special place in my heart. Sunday, they're going
- 24:04Speaker 4: over all the things that happened there. 136 robberies and
- 24:07Speaker 4: aggravated assaults have been reported at MacArthur Park so far
- 24:11Speaker 4: this year. As we creep here into fourth quarter, that's.
- 24:16Speaker 2: A lot of crap.
- 24:17Speaker 4: What made me laugh is we're constantly told how. Fences
- 24:22Speaker 4: don't work. Walls don't work. And then, you know, when
- 24:27Speaker 4: it comes to the border, you can't defend your border.
- 24:30Speaker 4: You can't put up a fence. You can't put up
- 24:32Speaker 4: a wall because that's horrible. And of course, they don't work.
- 24:35Speaker 4: And then they're putting up this. It's going to be
- 24:40Speaker 4: eight feet in some areas, 11 feet in other areas
- 24:43Speaker 4: to protect it because there's crime.
- 24:46Speaker 2: I just thought that was pretty ridiculous. Either they work
- 24:49Speaker 2: or they don't work.
- 24:52Speaker 5: PCH has claimed another life. You know, that stretch of
- 24:56Speaker 5: PCH in Malibu has long been a dangerous spot. We
- 25:03Speaker 5: had those four Pepperdine University students killed there. It's infamous
- 25:08Speaker 5: for the number of people who speed through the area.
- 25:10Speaker 5: And on Saturday morning, a longtime chef at Nobu Malibu
- 25:16Speaker 5: was killed when a teenager was driving a Range Rover
- 25:21Speaker 5: slammed into the rear of the parked car shortly before
- 25:24Speaker 5: 7 o'clock. Chef Ryu Uchimaya was 51. He'd been working
- 25:30Speaker 5: at Nobu Malibu for 25 years and was apparently on
- 25:34Speaker 5: his way to work. He stopped along the side of
- 25:37Speaker 5: the PCH and was taking a nap before heading into
- 25:41Speaker 5: the restaurant.
- 25:43Speaker 2: And was hit while he was still, still, right?
- 25:46Speaker 5: Yes, he was parked and he was apparently taking a
- 25:49Speaker 5: nap when this Range Rover slammed into him and driven by,
- 25:54Speaker 5: I believe, a 16 year old boy. And drugs are
- 25:59Speaker 5: not expected to be a cause here, but.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Just high speeds and unawareness of the shoulder.
- 26:07Speaker 5: I was watching a news report on it and they
- 26:11Speaker 5: were talking about how, and I'm not familiar with that
- 26:13Speaker 5: stretch of the road, but how it's very narrow and
- 26:15Speaker 5: people park there and it's just not a good idea.
- 26:18Speaker 5: That's with the Pepperdine students, whoever was speeding hit the
- 26:22Speaker 5: car and the car then crashed into the students. So
- 26:26Speaker 5: it's a narrow chunk of roadway and people go really
- 26:29Speaker 5: fast down.
- 26:30Speaker 2: But parking's legal there that we know of?
- 26:33Speaker 5: I don't know that definitively.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know either.
- 26:36Speaker 4: I just thought I'd throw that out there because that
- 26:39Speaker 4: may be another part of it. But surely being your
- 26:43Speaker 4: friendly neighborhood fork reporter, watching all the response to this
- 26:47Speaker 4: man's death and beloved shaft has been.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Overwhelming. Just the response that I've been seeing. All right. U.S.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Marines arrested on suspicion of murder. Holy hell, brutal and
- 27:02Speaker 4: heinous death in Japan. So a U S service member
- 27:06Speaker 4: was arrested on suspicion of this murder and robbery of
- 27:10Speaker 4: this Japanese woman. Uh, and her body was discovered in
- 27:14Speaker 4: a hotel there in Okinawa. So, um, just horrible. They
- 27:20Speaker 4: described the alleged killing as a heinous incident, prompted the
- 27:25Speaker 4: Japanese government to lodge a protest with the, with the
- 27:28Speaker 4: United States here. So, um, very sad when these things,
- 27:34Speaker 4: I mean, you can't help, but when you are in
- 27:37Speaker 4: the service like that, or when you're a representative of
- 27:40Speaker 4: the United States, which you are, you put on the uniform,
- 27:43Speaker 4: that these things get tied back to us in a
- 27:46Speaker 4: very ugly way.
- 27:49Speaker 5: One more? Yeah. I spy a spy at LAX. The
- 27:54Speaker 5: FBI has arrested a suspected Chinese agent at LAX. She
- 28:00Speaker 5: had allegedly been surveilling the son of Taiwan's president. The
- 28:07Speaker 5: son lives here in the U.S. Heather Zhang lives in Irvine.
- 28:12Speaker 5: She's a realtor, and she was getting on a plane
- 28:16Speaker 5: to Shanghai, China, when federal agents came along and cuffed
- 28:20Speaker 5: her on Sunday. She's being charged with acting as an
- 28:24Speaker 5: unregistered agent of a foreign government.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Not good, I would imagine.
- 28:30Speaker 5: Sounds like a spy movie, doesn't it?
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it kind of does. Well, all of those.
- 28:34Speaker 4: And whenever you you remember that the there was another
- 28:37Speaker 4: one not too long ago, but these beautiful women out
- 28:40Speaker 4: of Russia or things like that where and they end
- 28:44Speaker 4: up spies using their beauty to get information and things.
- 28:48Speaker 4: Every single time a spy story comes out, you go,
- 28:50Speaker 4: that'd make a good book. That'd make a good movie
- 28:53Speaker 4: because you know why?
- 28:54Speaker 2: They're spies. And that's what spies do to us. They
- 28:57Speaker 2: make us curious.
- 28:59Speaker 4: All righty, let's go to the top of the hour
- 29:01Speaker 4: and we'll come back with some more information for you.
- 29:04Speaker 4: So go nowhere. It's Neil Saavedra and the morning crew.
- 29:09Speaker 4: This is KFI Heard Everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You've been listening to The Bill Handel Show. Catch my
- 29:14Speaker 1: show Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and
