- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 9th of
- 0:16March and it's great to have your company.
- 0:19I hope that this new week is full of possibility and promise
- 0:22for you as we are going to this week round out this fascinating
- 0:28book of Hosea. And then we are going to begin
- 0:31reading a gospel, friends. Yes, we are going to open the
- 0:35very first, the OG, the gospel of Mark, as we read about the
- 0:40life and ministry of Jesus and how good is that to get to read
- 0:45gospels. But before we get to that, we
- 0:47are going to finish this book of the Old Testament, this prophet
- 0:50who writes about what is going on at the time where God's
- 0:55people just continually to worship the bar, worship the
- 0:59other gods of the Canaanite land that they have settled.
- 1:03And ultimately this leads us into the gospel because it's
- 1:06through Jesus that we are rescued from the dodgy practises
- 1:11that our hearts guide us toward. And as we read these last couple
- 1:15of chapters today and tomorrow, they are hard chapters to read,
- 1:18particularly today. This is fortunately following
- 1:21the preceding couple of chapters where we really see behind the
- 1:25scenes that God wrestling with His love and His compassion for
- 1:29these people, but His need to act injustice because of all of
- 1:34their sins and their unfaithfulness.
- 1:37And today really unpacks what the consequences of that sin
- 1:40looks like. And it's hard to read, hard to
- 1:43hear, but this is part of the word.
- 1:45So, Holy Spirit, may we just see you in the midst of everything
- 1:50that we read today, or may we learn more about your character
- 1:56and your unfailing love and compassion and justice.
- 2:02Alright, friends, let us do it. Let's read together Hosea
- 2:05chapter 13. When the tribe of Ephraim spoke,
- 2:19the people shook with fear, for that tribe was important in
- 2:23Israel. But the people of Ephraim sinned
- 2:26by worshipping Baal and thus sealed their destruction.
- 2:31Now they continue to sin by making silver idols, images
- 2:35shaped skilfully with human hands.
- 2:38Sacrifice. To these they cry and kiss the
- 2:42calf idols. Therefore they will disappear
- 2:45like the morning mist, like dew in the morning sun, like chaff
- 2:50blowing in the wind, like smoke from a chimney.
- 2:54I have seen the Lord your God ever since I brought you out of
- 2:58Egypt. You must acknowledge no God but
- 3:01me, for there is no other Saviour.
- 3:05I took care of you in the wilderness, in that dry and
- 3:08thirsty land, but when you had eaten and were satisfied, you
- 3:13became proud and forgot me. So now I will attack you like a
- 3:18lion, like a leopard that lurks along the road, like a bear
- 3:22whose Cubs have been taken away. I will tear out your heart.
- 3:27I will devour you like a hungry lioness and mangle you like a
- 3:31wild animal. You are about to be destroyed, O
- 3:35Israel. Yes, by me, your only helper.
- 3:39Now where is your king? Let him save you.
- 3:43Where are all the leaders of the land, the king and the officials
- 3:46you demanded of me? In my anger I gave you kings,
- 3:51and in my fury I took them away. Ephraim's guilt has been
- 3:56collected and his sin has been stored up for punishment.
- 4:00Pain has come to the people like the pain of childbirth, but they
- 4:04are like a child who resists being born.
- 4:08The moment of birth has arrived, but they stay in the womb.
- 4:12Should I ransom them from the grave?
- 4:15Should I redeem them from death? Oh death, bring on your terrors.
- 4:20Oh grave, bring on your plagues, for I will not take pity on
- 4:25them. Ephraim was the most fruitful of
- 4:28all his brothers. But the east wind, a blast from
- 4:31the Lord, will arise in the desert.
- 4:34All their flowing springs will run dry, and all their wells
- 4:38will disappear. Every precious thing they own
- 4:42will be plundered and carried away.
- 4:45The people of Sumeria must bear the consequences of their guilt
- 4:49because they rebelled against their God.
- 4:52They would be killed by an invading army, their little ones
- 4:56dashed to death against the ground.
- 4:59They're pregnant women ripped open by swords.
- 5:12Our Lord, as we read this, the finality of that judgement and
- 5:16what we know did happen to the people of Israel after that
- 5:19time, it just seems, well, too awful to contemplate.
- 5:25But Lord, we also know that that is not the end of the story and
- 5:29that even though your people had to go through this dark time of
- 5:33the consequences of their behaviour, we know that You
- 5:36restored all things to yourself. We know that You gave us Jesus.
- 5:43We know that from those people You brought a Saviour to save
- 5:48not only them, but all people throughout all time, and that
- 5:52includes us. Ah, so we thank you, our loving
- 5:56Father God, that even when we are as determined as them to
- 6:01turn away from you, you never leave us.
- 6:05You continually chase after us and you give us your most
- 6:09precious Son, Jesus, who died in our place so that we could take
- 6:15on his righteousness and be made right with you.
- 6:19You are wonderful and generous and loving and filled with
- 6:24grace, and we thank you for your grace and what you've done for
- 6:29us in Jesus. And it's in his name that we
- 6:31pray all of these things. Amen.
