- 0:00SPEAKER_03: A few minutes ago,
- 0:01the puppets reminded us that when something feels unfair or
- 0:09when something feels
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: limited in our lives,
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: the most sacred question that we can ask is,
- 0:18SPEAKER_03: does it have to be this way?
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: That question is the doorway into today's theme, which is re-imagine.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Re-imagining is not wishful thinking.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: It is at the heart of our faith.
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: It is at the heart of the biblical text.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: It's what the prophets do.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: It's what Jesus does.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: It's what the Spirit does.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: Working newness into old places until hope births and arise.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Now, two weeks ago, we practiced a bit of reimagining together.
- 1:05You remember,
- 1:05instead of collecting an offering,
- 1:08although we did that too,
- 1:10we handed out one.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Every person in the sanctuary that day received $10.
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: It was a small manna moment placed into your hands.
- 1:25And we asked you to imagine how that gift might be used in
- 1:30kingdom-shaped weddings.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Now, some of you took that bill home with a sense of possibility.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Some tucked it away in your wallet and waited.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: Some felt a little nervous.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: What do I do with this?
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: And instantly dropped it in a box at the back of the sanctuary.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Some of you have already acted on some of that imagination.
- 1:56SPEAKER_03: And some of you are still listening to the spirits nudge even now.
- 2:01Today is the week all of that comes together because this is
- 2:08the week of reimagining.
- 2:10The week that we dare to believe that God is not finished
- 2:15forming our money
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: stories,
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: our community,
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: and our imagination.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: There's two scriptures that we're going to be looking at today.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: The first one is in Mark chapter 12.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Jesus sits opposite the treasury watching people give.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: The wealthy drop in large sums of money.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: They are loud.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: They are impressive gifts.
- 2:44And then small little old widow entered,
- 2:49placing in the offering two small coins.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Jesus doesn't just see the amount.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: He sees, as he always does, the story behind it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: He sees,
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: I think,
- 3:06a world system where some live in abundance so deep that they
- 3:12can give out of their
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: overflow.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: And others give from their poverty because there's no earthly system.
- 3:22that has ever ensured their provision and their only hope can
- 3:26be that God might do something.
- 3:30Now,
- 3:30what we often miss in this passage is what comes right before
- 3:36the story.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: Right before this story,
- 3:39right before this moment that we see the widow give her last
- 3:44two small coins,
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Jesus warns about leaders
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: who devour widows' houses.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: He names the brokenness behind the widow's offering.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Jesus is not romanticizing or spiritualizing the widow's desperation.
- 4:08He is critiquing a system that left her with nothing but two
- 4:13coins to begin with.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: This scene is not only about generosity, it is about imagination.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: It is Jesus saying, you need to look hard at this.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: This is not how God intended the world to work.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: We need to reimagine a different story.
- 4:38walter brueggemann wrote in a book called prophetic imagination
- 4:43he he outlines how
- 4:46the prophetic task is to imagine the world as though god was
- 4:51truly sovereign in it
- 4:55that kind of imagination is what jesus is calling forth in this
- 5:00story with his
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: disciple before the temple
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: Before the treasury,
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: before Roman taxation,
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: before the church,
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: God commanded Israel that every 50 years they were to release debts,
- 5:18free captive,
- 5:20return land,
- 5:22rebalance inequality,
- 5:24and allow the soil itself to rest.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: It was called Jubilee.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: And Jubilee was God saying, you will not recreate Pharaoh's economy.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Remember the liberation from Egypt that you had.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: You will not build a world where the vulnerable are forgotten.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: You will build a world of enough for everyone.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: In Leviticus,
- 5:55God tells farmers to leave the edges of their field for the
- 6:00poor and the immigrant.
- 6:02Gleanings deliberately left behind so that others may live and
- 6:07harvest with dignity
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: for their needs.
- 6:12The metaphorical edges of our life fields should not be
- 6:18accidental either.
- 6:21We should be leaving margins in our lives for the desperate
- 6:27that are around them.
- 6:29They should become intentional spaces of compassion and shared
- 6:35dignity for our fellow humanity.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: And it's not charity.
- 6:41SPEAKER_03: It's system-level reimagination of human equity.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Wendell Berry, who was a poet, called the grace of the world.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: That's what he called it,
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: the grace of the world,
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: the grace that emerges when we trust God's abundance in the world.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Every one of us has inherited a money story.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: That's the series that we're kind of going through right now.
- 7:10And there's a journal back there that you can use to
- 7:13investigate your money story
- 7:15and investigate God's money story and investigate our community
- 7:19money story and
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: reimagine what it might be.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: And the truth of it is some of us have inherited scarcity in our life.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Some have inherited shame in our life.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: Some have inherited anxiety.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: And some inherited the belief that worth and wealth are the same thing.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: But here is where we find freedom.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: Stories can be rewritten.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: Reimagining asks,
- 7:59what if God's dream for me is bigger than the story that I have
- 8:05carried in my life
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: thus far?
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: What if my money is not only about survival,
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: but about connection,
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: about compassion,
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: about justice in the world?
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: What if the Spirit is inviting me to participate in Jubilee?
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: even in small ways.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: As I mentioned earlier,
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: two weeks ago,
- 8:33SPEAKER_03: when we placed that $10 bill in your hands,
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: it wasn't about the amount.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: It was about imagination.
- 8:42It was about trusting that a little can become much when held
- 8:48in God's story.
- 8:51It was about asking,
- 8:52what can this become in the hands of a disciple of Jesus
- 9:00Christ?
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: Now, some used their $10 bill to feed somebody.
- 9:05SPEAKER_03: Some bought supplies to bless a neighbor.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Some reached out to someone who needed dignity, not charity.
- 9:11And some used it to start something bigger than a $10 bill ever
- 9:16could do on its own.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: And some of you,
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: maybe you're still imagining,
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: still listening,
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: still discerning what the Spirit has to say to you as a disciple.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: That is holy.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: That is jubilee.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: That is the Spirit at work.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: This next part of the sermon is inviting your participation.
- 9:41Because imagine growth among us as a community of believers
- 9:46when our imagination
- 9:47SPEAKER_03: and our stories are shared.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: So I want to ask you,
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: if you have imagined a way to use your $10 bill,
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: if you have already acted on it,
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: or have an imagination about what you might do it,
- 10:05would you be willing to stand and briefly tell us what you did
- 10:11or plan to do?
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Just one or two sentences.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: It doesn't have to be an elaborate thing.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: No pressure.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: Just simply naming what the Spirit has stirred in you with that $10 bill.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Anybody willing to risk sharing their imaginations
- 10:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: We're going to need more than one mic.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: I'm going to come on out.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: Can I bring a mic to you?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: A little class participation here.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Well, that was $10 and the poinsettias are exactly $10.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: So that worked out really well.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Wonderful.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Who's next?
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Hadn't planned on that one, but that's a great idea.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: Millard has his hand up.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: You may recall that about the time that the $10 bill hit plate,
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: the mega millions had hit,
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: I don't know what,
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: $800 million?
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: It was actually $898 million.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:25I actually had the thought,
- 11:26you know,
- 11:27maybe I should get one of those tickets.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, two tickets.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: Turn it in.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: Think how I could multiply that, right?
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: But I didn't do that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: I did take a brother out to lunch,
- 11:41and we had about an hour conversation about what God was about
- 11:47in the world.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: It was a real joy to do that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: It was a blessing to me, I hope, to the person I took out as well.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: Wonderful.
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: So you built intimacy,
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: you built community,
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: you built relationship,
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: and you deepened your spiritual journey with one another.
- 12:05SPEAKER_03: Brenda back there?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I thought I'd lost it.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: I thought I'd put it in my folder.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: I thought I'd put it in my purse, could not find it.
- 12:12But the morning of the breakfast that the youth were having for
- 12:16a fundraiser,
- 12:18Surprise,
- 12:19it was in my wallet the whole time,
- 12:20hidden away in a safe place.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: And so that's where the $10 went for the breakfast.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: All right, wonderful.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: Giving to our youth to go to NYC and have a wonderful,
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: incredible,
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: spiritual,
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: transformational experience.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: I will.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Anyways, I'm a teacher at Rocktown High School.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Excuse me, I'm a school.
- 12:42And my kids ask me how we celebrate Thanksgiving because they
- 12:48don't celebrate it the same way.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: So I'm using my $10 to buy them turkey tomorrow.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: Marvelous.
- 12:58SPEAKER_03: Building community.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Anybody else?
- 13:03so I am and for a number of years have been part of a book club
- 13:07and we were meeting
- 13:09later in the afternoon and it's you know it's a bunch of women
- 13:13that I don't really
- 13:14need to ministry minister to but one of the women had purchased
- 13:20all this food for
- 13:21us that was kind of theme related to the book and she kept
- 13:26carrying stuff in and I
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: went up to her and I was like
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: Can I give you anything?
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: And I mean,
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: we met in Stewart's draft at one o'clock,
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: so that,
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: I hadn't had that $10 long.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: And she said...
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Well, if you want to give me $10, that would be great.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: And it just felt so specific.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: It was like, there it is in my pocket.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: It is gone.
- 13:48But it was an opportunity to share with the whole group how
- 13:51that money had came.
- 13:53And an opportunity to share some of the excitement about what
- 13:55we've got going on here.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: So I wanted to share that.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: Wonderful.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Relieving someone's burden.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Jubilee is all about.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: I wasn't here that Sunday, but I listened to your sermon anyway.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: And so I took $10 and gave it to someone that I knew had needed it.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 14:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:17SPEAKER_03: So it sparked your imagination and your generosity just hearing about it.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Very cool.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: David?
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: And I was sitting there thinking,
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: well,
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: these waitresses always work really hard,
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: waiters and waitresses.
- 14:36They probably don't get paid much,
- 14:37so I gave mine as a tip to the waitress.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: Recognizing service of others was a gift.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Anybody else have a heart to share?
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Well, I know there's more stories, so
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: You know,
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: if you don't want to share them in public,
- 14:59I encourage you to share them with one another to spark
- 15:03imagination because that is
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: what reimagining looks like.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: They're not grand gestures, right?
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: They were all just small,
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: deliberate acts of kingdom imagination,
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: taking kingdom opportunities in our life and the flow of it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Acts that say, this is not just money.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: This is manna.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: This is seed that we are planting.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: This is jubilee in the making.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: I'll leave you with three things that we can continue to try to work at.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: First, reimagining what enough means.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: not as a quantity,
- 15:50but as a level of trust that we have in God and I'm saying the
- 15:57community of
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: believers that surrounds us.
- 15:59We've heard a lot this morning about the support that a
- 16:03community of believers can provide.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Enough in Scripture is always tied to God, not to accumulation.
- 16:15Second,
- 16:16reimagining the edges of our field,
- 16:20whether literally or figuratively.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Where can we create margin in our lives?
- 16:28Where can we intentionally leave space or edges for another
- 16:34person's flourishing
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: around our lives?
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: And third, reimagining community.
- 16:44What would Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren look like if
- 16:48Jubilee wasn't a
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: metaphor,
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: but a lived reality?
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: No one in this room had to suffer alone.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: I think a lot of that's going on, actually.
- 17:04if we believe that God's abundance can flow in unexpected ways,
- 17:10even through $10 bills.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: So I leave you with this morning.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: To those that are living in scarcity, God sees you.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: Your story is not defined by lack.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: Reimagine.
- 17:31To those living in abundance,
- 17:33your abundance is an invitation to be part of God's
- 17:37imagination.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Re-imagine.
- 17:41To those who feel unsure,
- 17:44the spirit works not through certainty,
- 17:47but through openness.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Imagine.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: And to our whole church, re-imagining is not naive.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: It is resurrection in action.
- 18:02It is what disciples do when they believe God is still working
- 18:07in our story.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Amen.
