- 1:14Speaker 1: how you doing today, my man.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Good man? I love our intro music. Yeah, recorded live
- 1:19Speaker 2: at Bungalow ten.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yeah? I just was introduced to that not too long ago.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You just that's just the cat's well.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I'm making sure, we're having a street fight over here.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Don't worry about that. Yeah, this, I'm glad that they
- 1:33Speaker 1: picked thirty seconds into us recording to start going crazy.
- 1:38Speaker 2: But I just saw Brett Shues and Thalma's cat. So
- 1:43Speaker 2: this really paranoid, really paranoid. This is forty This is
- 1:46Speaker 2: where doing good. Happy to do this one. I'm glad
- 1:50Speaker 2: that got all of us together. This is a big
- 1:54Speaker 2: one because we are literally halfway through twenty twenty six,
- 1:58Speaker 2: which means we're halfway through the movie season. Were in
- 2:00Speaker 2: the thick of the summer movie Blockbuster, if you want
- 2:04Speaker 2: to call it that. Yeah season.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Before we go any further, I do want to introduce
- 2:10Speaker 1: our buddy Brett, because our buddy Brett is here as well. Brett,
- 2:13Speaker 1: how are you doing?
- 2:14Speaker 3: Hey, I'm good. Do you think we could do a
- 2:18Speaker 3: live show from Bungalow ten?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Absolutely?
- 2:21Speaker 3: Oh, I think we can really built it up.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You gotta bring it, you gotta bring it. So I've
- 2:27Speaker 2: heard you got to bring it. But I think it's possible.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I think it's possible. They even played music there that
- 2:34Speaker 2: I feel like I should have known, but I did not,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and it partially scared me. I remember going up, remember
- 2:41Speaker 2: going up to the bar saying do you have any
- 2:43Speaker 2: clay Walker?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Anlay walker?
- 2:45Speaker 2: And anyway, we left shortly after.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I just saw a cat fly downstairs, so.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Went shortly after to get my white ice cream at Ginny's.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, is that the flavor you asked for?
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yes? What flavor do you want?
- 2:59Speaker 1: I want?
- 2:59Speaker 2: I want two big ass scoops of white.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yes. Okay, that could be a lot of things.
- 3:05Speaker 2: And I ate it. Yeah, I hate when cats have fun?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Why now? Why?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Now?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Why are they picking now to just right?
- 3:13Speaker 2: I wish people could see the mood you've set. Yeah,
- 3:17Speaker 2: in our studio.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's not a studio anymore. We're just in in my
- 3:22Speaker 1: living room now.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we are with a folded up table.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm curious to get you you guys as is that
- 3:29Speaker 1: the appropriate term? Use?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Guys?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Use guys. It's been in Jersey too much opinion on this,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but it kind of feels am I wrong to say
- 3:38Speaker 1: that twenty twenty six has not packed quite the punch
- 3:43Speaker 1: that twenty twenty five did in the terms of By
- 3:47Speaker 1: the way, we're here to talk about the best of
- 3:48Speaker 1: twenty twenty this the.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Whole thing of halfway through the year, halfway through the
- 3:52Speaker 2: movie season is our best of twenty twenty six movies
- 3:56Speaker 2: so far, I will tell you yes, But from what
- 4:01Speaker 2: I understand, the way that the box office is going, Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 2: it hasn't been this good since twenty nineteen, which means
- 4:09Speaker 2: it hasn't been good since.
- 4:10Speaker 1: COVID monetary standard.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yes, and there's some fantastic examples of small movies making
- 4:19Speaker 2: a lot of money, to the Devil Wears Prada too
- 4:24Speaker 2: and things like that actually making close to a billion.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I think the main one is, uh, well, I'll save
- 4:34Speaker 2: it because I know it's on my list. It's probably
- 4:39Speaker 2: on another one of our lists, but it is. It's
- 4:42Speaker 2: a sensation sweeping the nation. But I was shocked by,
- 4:46Speaker 2: like I think, and from what I understand, like theater companies,
- 4:49Speaker 2: movie companies are all kind of surprised of like exactly
- 4:53Speaker 2: how much money, and it hasn't and it hasn't all
- 4:55Speaker 2: come from the places they thought it would, because right
- 4:58Speaker 2: now we're in the moment of Supergirl not doing that great. Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 2: so that's that was kind of a bus But then
- 5:05Speaker 2: there's been other things like back Rooms and one and
- 5:09Speaker 2: like I said, Devil war is proud of to.
- 5:12Speaker 1: What what is it about Supergirl? That hasn't.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I don't know. I think people were a little harsh,
- 5:17Speaker 2: but it is a very average It's a very average movie.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I completely forgot it was coming out, so like part
- 5:25Speaker 1: of it marketing? Yeah, where where was the campaign for this?
- 5:30Speaker 3: It's not part of it. It does feel like they
- 5:32Speaker 3: felt a little bit like they could just ride Superman
- 5:35Speaker 3: and everyone show up for this because of everything they
- 5:39Speaker 3: did last year. I do want to stand up for
- 5:42Speaker 3: Supergirl a little bit because I feel like it's getting
- 5:44Speaker 3: panned to a degree that's unfair. It's not that bad.
- 5:49Speaker 2: People crashing, it's not that bad. We saw it. Do
- 5:53Speaker 2: we see it in Imax or no?
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yes, we did see.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I thought it was fine. I think you may have
- 5:59Speaker 2: liked it a little more than I did, but expectations
- 6:01Speaker 2: were not that high to begin with when we went in.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But I think it's just this kind of build up
- 6:09Speaker 2: to something where it ends up just kind of being
- 6:14Speaker 2: a very It is slightly forgettable. It's got Superman in it,
- 6:19Speaker 2: which is probably some of the best scenes in it,
- 6:21Speaker 2: which kind of makes you think, Okay, it's not you
- 6:25Speaker 2: can't just put DC in front of it and it's
- 6:28Speaker 2: just going to work. But I also feel like the
- 6:31Speaker 2: girl from House of Dragon. What's her name, Millie.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Something millid cock, yeah, alcock something, stop it, stop it.
- 6:41Speaker 2: It's not her fault. She's a great supergirl, yes, but
- 6:44Speaker 2: you have a weak villain. You have a a kind
- 6:47Speaker 2: of run of the mill story. Yeah, And and there's
- 6:53Speaker 2: there's not a lot of appeal to it, to be honest,
- 6:55Speaker 2: And there's some cool stuff in it. And like I said,
- 6:58Speaker 2: it's not the worst movie that we've ever seen, but yeah,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I mean it is. It is a bit of a letdown.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I do agree with your larger point. I I mean,
- 7:09Speaker 3: I've heard those reports about how well movies are doing
- 7:11Speaker 3: and stuff, which is great. I'm glad that it is
- 7:14Speaker 3: nice to say it. Anecdotally, I feel similarly to what
- 7:17Speaker 3: you've said. And I think the thing that's in my
- 7:20Speaker 3: mind most of all, which is only one movie, is Sinners.
- 7:24Speaker 3: But Sinners had already come out at this point last year. Yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and Sinners wound up being my favorite movie of the year,
- 7:32Speaker 3: So there was this one kind of even one we'll
- 7:36Speaker 3: get to on this list that it's maybe my favorite
- 7:40Speaker 3: movie so far this year just hasn't had that lasting
- 7:43Speaker 3: impact in the same way.
- 7:45Speaker 2: But yeah, I but and yeah, it is, it is true.
- 7:49Speaker 2: But again when this when people are hearing this, we
- 7:52Speaker 2: we The Odyssey hasn't come out yet, the New Spider
- 7:55Speaker 2: Man hasn't come out yet, And honestly, I mean at
- 7:58Speaker 2: the end of the year, you've got Doom Day and
- 8:00Speaker 2: Doom Part three that I mean, so there is exactly
- 8:04Speaker 2: so there is a lot to be what I mean,
- 8:08Speaker 2: I think there's a lot to be excited about. But
- 8:10Speaker 2: the movie, the summer movie stuff, there is there's there's
- 8:14Speaker 2: highs and then there's I feel like there's there's really
- 8:17Speaker 2: low well.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Masters of the Universe is another example, right that.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Did not do what it should. And honestly, I also
- 8:24Speaker 2: that live action Mwana looks like shit and it comes out, Yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 2: it just came out, and I'm like, I don't even
- 8:32Speaker 2: know why we're even trying this.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I hope it's the death of live action remakes.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I did too, And I really think the Rock wearing
- 8:40Speaker 2: a body suit, it looks so stupid.
- 8:42Speaker 3: When when I saw that picture, that first picture of
- 8:44Speaker 3: the Rock wearing that wig. Yeah, my wife and kids
- 8:48Speaker 3: have been saying that I've been just like grumpy old
- 8:51Speaker 3: man about that movie. And I took it to them
- 8:52Speaker 3: immediately and said, tell me this.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Is yeah good, exactly, exactly exactly. I really hope this
- 9:00Speaker 2: is the end.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Of the Rocky. He's not even he doesn't do anything done.
- 9:07Speaker 2: No, no, he when next time we see him, he's
- 9:10Speaker 2: in a Memphis field house wrestling Perry Horowitz.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Okay, to make money.
- 9:16Speaker 3: This isn't a side. But I did somebody see somebody
- 9:19Speaker 3: say after that movie bombs this man finn a ruined
- 9:23Speaker 3: summer slam.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly, probably exactly. But yeah. I actually have
- 9:30Speaker 2: told my wife and she didn't believe me, but I said,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I really don't think I'm going to see Malana in theaters.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I just does she want to see it? No, because
- 9:38Speaker 1: my wife is like, oh, we have to go see No.
- 9:41Speaker 2: She hates most of the live action stuff, which I
- 9:43Speaker 2: don't blame her. But here's the thing for people that
- 9:47Speaker 2: don't know, Milana is is great. Right, Mawana Too was
- 9:53Speaker 2: supposed to be a Disney Plus series, right, they changed it.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But when within that change of putting it in theaters,
- 10:01Speaker 2: they had already committed to doing a live action Mowana.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I really don't think and Mowana Too, by the way,
- 10:09Speaker 2: which I don't necessarily. I think it's a bit crazy,
- 10:12Speaker 2: made over a billion dollars, so of course the third
- 10:16Speaker 2: one's coming.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I just think this is too soon. I think it's
- 10:20Speaker 2: all just too soon. Yeah, it doesn't look as good
- 10:23Speaker 2: in live action. It doesn't play as well in live action.
- 10:26Speaker 2: The rock doesn't look as cool as live action. A
- 10:29Speaker 2: lot of the scenes that I think are what we
- 10:31Speaker 2: would consider memorable and fun in the original do not
- 10:34Speaker 2: come across that way. I don't like the way that
- 10:37Speaker 2: chicken looks, so fuck Disney.
- 10:39Speaker 1: There we go. That's the message here, trying to get
- 10:42Speaker 1: across that evil dead burn.
- 10:44Speaker 2: I will see what about Also just came out.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Why talking about the summer blockbuster season, like Mandalorian.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Have we moved on from Bungalow tens? Have I plugged that?
- 10:54Speaker 1: We're still there? Okay, we're still there the correct Yeah. Uh.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Mandalorian and Grogu was another one that kind of came
- 11:03Speaker 1: out to mixed mixed reactions. You know. The positive take
- 11:06Speaker 1: on it was that, hey, if this was season three,
- 11:10Speaker 1: if this was supposed to be a television series, it
- 11:12Speaker 1: probably would have been enjoyed, enjoyable. Yeah, but then there
- 11:15Speaker 1: are other people that are like, well, make the TV
- 11:18Speaker 1: series that don't why are we doing this? Yeah, exactly, Yeah,
- 11:22Speaker 1: And then to go back to Masters of the Universe
- 11:25Speaker 1: a little bit. I I am intrigued by that. The
- 11:29Speaker 1: ceiling comparison I've heard, I haven't seen the movie. The
- 11:32Speaker 1: ceiling comparison for that is the Dungeons and Dragons movie
- 11:36Speaker 1: that came out a few years ago. Like similarly surprising, like, oh,
- 11:41Speaker 1: it's actually kind of fun.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Well, it embraces what it is. Yeah, that's that's the key,
- 11:46Speaker 2: is embracing on what you're actually trying to make and
- 11:50Speaker 2: adapt for a new generation that did not grow up.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Master of the view Verse in my Cinema Chronicles podcast
- 11:58Speaker 2: and and honestly, Masterly Verse was not that long of
- 12:02Speaker 2: a show. It was not that long of augh but
- 12:04Speaker 2: it ended before the eighties ended. But I get he Man,
- 12:09Speaker 2: I get that that thing. But I'm kind of surprised.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I'm surprised that word of mouth didn't lead to some body.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I just don't think they. I just don't think people
- 12:20Speaker 2: care about it because I think.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Do people even know who he Man is?
- 12:24Speaker 2: That's what I mean, Like for us, he made a
- 12:27Speaker 2: skeletor I know, but even I didn't grow up watching
- 12:30Speaker 2: it and doing that. So I do think it was
- 12:34Speaker 2: kind of an uphill battle, even though Travis Nyth had
- 12:37Speaker 2: done Bumblebee and Kubo and Two Strings, Yeah, did a
- 12:40Speaker 2: great job with it. I just don't think you. I
- 12:43Speaker 2: just don't think it's the audience wasn't there like they
- 12:46Speaker 2: thought it was because they I don't think they really cared,
- 12:50Speaker 2: to be honest. And then that's a shame, because that
- 12:54Speaker 2: actually is a pretty good movie that actually is was
- 12:57Speaker 2: cool to see in theaters, and so it's some things
- 13:01Speaker 2: like that. I feel like it's kind of unfortunate that
- 13:04Speaker 2: it's not the money.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I was trying to talk my family into going to
- 13:08Speaker 1: see it when we were on vacation, because I thought
- 13:10Speaker 1: that was a nice, agreeable movie that everybody would be like, Okay, yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 1: we'll go see it. You know. I was trying to
- 13:16Speaker 1: pitch the Death of Robin Hood and then I was
- 13:18Speaker 1: told by my father in law, you like all that
- 13:20Speaker 1: weird shit. I was like, all right, fair enough.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Like all that weird shit, even though I don't I know,
- 13:26Speaker 2: he doesn't know really what that movie is anyway, but yeah, sure.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So we didn't even go to the movies at all.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Which I'm I'm glad because it probably knowing my in laws,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it probably would have been another screening of Michael, even
- 13:40Speaker 1: though they've already most of them have already seen it
- 13:43Speaker 1: like three or four times and it's the greatest movie
- 13:46Speaker 1: of the year. But I digress. I think the interesting
- 13:50Speaker 1: thing is that on this podcast. I know, Brandon, you
- 13:54Speaker 1: and I have been talking about this for years, but
- 13:57Speaker 1: this kind of dependency upon IP movies to kind of
- 14:02Speaker 1: carry to kind of tent pole the box office that
- 14:06Speaker 1: seems to have changed this summer specifically.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And it's not to say that, you know, the big
- 14:11Speaker 1: movies aren't making money, but when you look at two
- 14:14Speaker 1: films like Obsession and Back Rooms making money that they
- 14:18Speaker 1: made this summer off of the budgets they had, I
- 14:21Speaker 1: think it is kind of encouraging. I don't want to
- 14:23Speaker 1: say for like the pure centophiles out there, but it
- 14:27Speaker 1: is encouraging to see movies like that finding some success again.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And it's that horror genre man something to it.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:39Speaker 2: But the thing about Obsession, for people who don't know
- 14:41Speaker 2: it was made them less than a million dollars. Yeah,
- 14:44Speaker 2: it has now made over four hundred million.
- 14:47Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 14:49Speaker 2: It literally was making more money in it's second and
- 14:52Speaker 2: third weekend than it was in its opening weekend.
- 14:54Speaker 1: It's word of mouth.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I it's amazing to me, and I think it's absolutely
- 15:01Speaker 2: worth all of the praise. There's talk about can it
- 15:06Speaker 2: get in with Oscar stuff? I hope it does. Like
- 15:08Speaker 2: let it well, I mean let it run like let
- 15:11Speaker 2: it run wild.
- 15:12Speaker 1: To the point we were talking about earlier, if this
- 15:15Speaker 1: is considered a quote unquote weak field so far, I
- 15:19Speaker 1: think that door's absolutely open.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I think so, especially if you allow it up to
- 15:23Speaker 2: ten movies.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Man, wouldn't that be something obsession in the best picture.
- 15:28Speaker 2: I think it's I do think it is. I think
- 15:31Speaker 2: it's possible. And yeah, you can't deny that box office,
- 15:35Speaker 2: you really can't deny it. For other things that they
- 15:38Speaker 2: thought were probably a surefire thing, like maybe Masters of
- 15:41Speaker 2: the Universe are Supergirl obsession comes in and blows all
- 15:45Speaker 2: of that out of the water. Yeah, that means something.
- 15:49Speaker 2: It means something.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Any other thoughts on the year in film so far
- 15:54Speaker 1: before we get into our favorite films from twenty twenty six.
- 15:57Speaker 2: So I just I it kind of feels like the
- 16:00Speaker 2: summer season isn't quite what it used to be.
- 16:04Speaker 1: No, I agree, I mean, and I think it's.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Really kind of feeds into what really what this discussion
- 16:09Speaker 2: is about. But but it is kind of like, oh, okay,
- 16:13Speaker 2: oh Nolan's got a new one. Okay, cool, a new
- 16:16Speaker 2: Spider Man.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, that's cool.
- 16:18Speaker 2: But then in August you kind of well it kind
- 16:21Speaker 2: of like then it's over again. Right.
- 16:23Speaker 1: We talked about this a little bit last year too.
- 16:25Speaker 1: How last year kind of felt like this weird convergence
- 16:28Speaker 1: of like, oh, PTA's got a new film out this year,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and like we're going through all these filmmakers like they've
- 16:34Speaker 1: got a new one out, They've got a new one out,
- 16:36Speaker 1: And it just seems like that hasn't been the case
- 16:38Speaker 1: so far this year. I mean, and I'm curious to
- 16:41Speaker 1: see what happens this award season because right now it
- 16:45Speaker 1: does kind of feel like The Odyssey and Spider Man
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's about it, and like the invites getting a lot
- 16:49Speaker 1: of buzz on social media. Yeah, but as far as
- 16:52Speaker 1: the big movies is.
- 16:53Speaker 2: In, a new movie called I Want Your Sex with
- 16:55Speaker 2: Cooper Hoffman has gotten great reviews since Sundance, So this
- 16:58Speaker 2: could be the summer of of wild for for all
- 17:01Speaker 2: we know, but I think we are kind of getting
- 17:04Speaker 2: into where, like, you know, December's got a couple of
- 17:10Speaker 2: real heavyweights.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Are we talking like Awards?
- 17:16Speaker 2: I think I think those I think was going to
- 17:19Speaker 2: be a big, big thing. But there's things that kind
- 17:24Speaker 2: of stick out to me like the I don't know
- 17:29Speaker 2: the I don't know this one name, but the Sam
- 17:31Speaker 2: Rockwell and John Malkovic movie with the director that did
- 17:35Speaker 2: three billboards. And Yeah, there's things that you could be
- 17:39Speaker 2: excited about. But then there's others that's like I think
- 17:42Speaker 2: some of us a gamble. I think some of it,
- 17:44Speaker 2: like Mawana is just a cash grab, and I don't
- 17:46Speaker 2: I don't know if there's really a lot of meat
- 17:48Speaker 2: on the bone there, you know. And but I mean
- 17:52Speaker 2: they'll have their shot, right, But I mean August has
- 17:57Speaker 2: like I'm kind of interested in. I think it's is
- 18:00Speaker 2: that the Dog the Star Dogs, The Dog of.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Stars Dog Stars.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Ridley Scott's new with Josh Brolin and Jacob LORDI
- 18:11Speaker 2: Super Troopers three, which if you like it, you know,
- 18:14Speaker 2: if you dig it, you dig it. But then you
- 18:17Speaker 2: kind of get into September with Practical Magic too.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Remember that one My wife could not be more hype
- 18:24Speaker 3: mine too.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Well. We did a thing about Nicole Kimmen that's going
- 18:29Speaker 2: to come out in September that deals with that. Have
- 18:32Speaker 2: you seen practical magic?
- 18:33Speaker 3: I have because I was write okay, I mean, I
- 18:37Speaker 3: was okay with it, but I was also four.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I like that. You know Coconut song.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Ye, for a long time, we all have.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, we recently. We recently went back and watched it
- 18:50Speaker 2: and realized that.
- 18:52Speaker 1: I hate it.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not.
- 18:55Speaker 3: It's it's one of again, it's a nostalgia thing.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I can understand that.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I just I forgot how silly and stupid it really was.
- 19:10Speaker 2: But yeah, no, do I don't want to be in court.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Listen. I went on. I went on Ramon and Will
- 19:17Speaker 1: one morning and said to all of Nashville that hocus
- 19:20Speaker 1: Pocus is a bad movie, so I.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Can take it out exactly.
- 19:26Speaker 1: What's funny is. I don't think I've told this story,
- 19:28Speaker 1: but Ramone's wife actually texted him and said, get that
- 19:31Speaker 1: man off the air.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Cut.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I can. I can take the heat, but I was
- 19:39Speaker 1: quite disappointed after the reputation. My wife built that movie
- 19:42Speaker 1: up as like this is spooky season.
- 19:44Speaker 2: And let me tell you for someone that doesn't mind
- 19:47Speaker 2: hocus Pocus. When I watched a second I'm like, anyway,
- 19:52Speaker 2: I said, take me to the Hermitage Animal Clinic and
- 19:54Speaker 2: put me to sleep.
- 19:55Speaker 1: That's right.
- 19:58Speaker 2: But yeah, I I'm happy to see the box office thriving.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I wish Masters of the Universe would have done better.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I haven't wish Supergirl would have done better.
- 20:08Speaker 1: But I'm gonna go see a double feature just to
- 20:10Speaker 1: give them my money.
- 20:11Speaker 2: You should.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I hope that what we're saying is correct, Like I
- 20:17Speaker 3: hope obsession there's been Yeah, but I am not yet
- 20:23Speaker 3: ready to bank on that because obsessions, I'm saying from
- 20:30Speaker 3: an awards perspective, from a critical because you're going to
- 20:35Speaker 3: have that kind of whatever. This year's version of kind
- 20:38Speaker 3: of Murderers row out in the fall. Now, last year
- 20:42Speaker 3: I didn't. I thought the same thing about Sinners. I
- 20:45Speaker 3: thought it would get overlooked and passed by eventually. Yeah,
- 20:50Speaker 3: it will interesting.
- 20:51Speaker 2: How do you feel about Raymy Malick winning the Oscar
- 20:54Speaker 2: Rhapsody because.
- 20:55Speaker 3: I feel like part was his teeth?
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yeah? No, yeah, he won an Oscar for me bugs
- 21:00Speaker 2: And hey, I say that because even though it is
- 21:04Speaker 2: the highest grossing, it has passed Oppenheimer to be the
- 21:07Speaker 2: highest grossing biopic of all time. Michael, I really don't
- 21:12Speaker 2: like Maybe Coleman Domingo as the father, maybe, but I
- 21:18Speaker 2: really don't get it, Like I really truly don't get it.
- 21:22Speaker 2: First of all, it's it's so sugarcoated and they act
- 21:26Speaker 2: like this the the part two is gonna go into
- 21:29Speaker 2: stuff and okay, take that for what it's worth, but
- 21:34Speaker 2: I'm like, this is not, like, this is not all
- 21:38Speaker 2: of his life, Like this is not it's I mean,
- 21:40Speaker 2: it is a movie, but it's it's not it's not
- 21:43Speaker 2: real compared to the what I would say he's gonna
- 21:48Speaker 2: be remembered for.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Stony just got a text from oh from his in laws.
- 21:52Speaker 2: That's so yeah who saw it? Yeah? Who saw who
- 21:56Speaker 2: saw it? For the fourth time?
- 21:57Speaker 1: They it is mess like they all I'm talking like
- 22:03Speaker 1: my father in law, all my cousin laws like just
- 22:08Speaker 1: love that movie.
- 22:09Speaker 3: But is it just like we love his music.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I think I think that's what it is because I
- 22:15Speaker 1: went to a family cookout when we went up for
- 22:18Speaker 1: Memorial Day and my cousin in law had Michael Jackson
- 22:23Speaker 1: playing on Spotify, like the Michael Jackson and they were
- 22:25Speaker 1: just like obsessed, Like I.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Can't, I really can't listen to his stuff because I.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Just maybe somebody somewhere in that family cracked open a
- 22:32Speaker 1: one wish willow about Michael.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Jackson, maybe and pretend that nothing else ever happened in
- 22:39Speaker 2: his life and that he's not he was not fucking
- 22:42Speaker 2: weird and most of his life.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Quite surprised to see that it is second on the
- 22:49Speaker 1: year in total gross.
- 22:50Speaker 2: It's almost it's going to hit a billion dollars. It's
- 22:52Speaker 2: going to hit a billion dollars. And by the way,
- 22:54Speaker 2: Jackson Estate gets some of that percentage, so I'm sure
- 22:57Speaker 2: they're very happy with it. Also, the movie also doesn't
- 23:01Speaker 2: even address Jennet Jackson at all.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Five is already at number three.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Okay, well well now, okay, well now you've punctured my
- 23:10Speaker 2: heart and I love it toys. Can I just tell
- 23:15Speaker 2: you that that franchise is one of the absolute best.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Anytime someone says why would you make another one, they
- 23:26Speaker 2: go in there and they say, here's why. The son
- 23:29Speaker 2: of a bitch let me say the Woodies terms.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I held that way, especially when.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Hey, he was the son of a bitch. That's my
- 23:38Speaker 2: woody puss.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Sorry, especially when we had three and four was announced
- 23:48Speaker 3: that it felt like what are we doing? But now
- 23:52Speaker 3: now I say, that's right. I think this is what
- 23:54Speaker 3: I said when I'm my what I put on letter blogs.
- 23:58Speaker 3: If they make a hundred, I'm gonna go see.
- 23:59Speaker 2: A But and also for people who don't know, I've
- 24:04Speaker 2: heard them talk about this and they're kind of like
- 24:06Speaker 2: interviews and stuff, is that they have never signed a
- 24:09Speaker 2: contract that says they have to do more than whatever
- 24:12Speaker 2: the movie is. So that means Pixar has gone back
- 24:15Speaker 2: to at least Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and says, hey,
- 24:19Speaker 2: we got an idea because he said, like, we never
- 24:22Speaker 2: signed anything that said we had to do two, three,
- 24:24Speaker 2: four five. That's never the case. And each time they
- 24:30Speaker 2: have their pulls on just the way the world is
- 24:33Speaker 2: and the way kids are. And as a parent watching
- 24:37Speaker 2: my son play with these toys, it does it. It's
- 24:42Speaker 2: a gut punch because it's like, you know what, he's
- 24:45Speaker 2: just now discovering these things, and he's gonna discover more,
- 24:48Speaker 2: just like I did with g I. Joe's and Ninja
- 24:50Speaker 2: turtles and wrestling figures. And one day you're not gonna
- 24:53Speaker 2: play with them anymore, and it's part of growing up.
- 24:56Speaker 2: But then how does that go? And it's it's one
- 24:59Speaker 2: of the best on franchise as ever. It truly is.
- 25:03Speaker 2: And and if anybody has not seen Toy Story five,
- 25:07Speaker 2: it is fantastic. It is Jesse's movie, which is I mean,
- 25:12Speaker 2: so well deserved. Joan Cuse's great, but also Woody Buzz
- 25:16Speaker 2: and everybody else. But I can't tell how many times
- 25:20Speaker 2: that I've had to put my son in one of
- 25:21Speaker 2: our one of our rocking chairs. And he's Jesse, He's
- 25:26Speaker 2: riding Bullseye and I'm somebody. He likes to put me
- 25:30Speaker 2: a sid. I don't know if that's a compliment or not,
- 25:33Speaker 2: but but I do. I play the part. I wrap
- 25:36Speaker 2: him up in duct tape, I put fireworks. Yeah, I
- 25:39Speaker 2: hope he I hope he's fine. But I'm like, hey,
- 25:42Speaker 2: I mean character, goddamn it. So here's here's what we're doing,
- 25:45Speaker 2: you know what I mean?
- 25:46Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 3: I saw someone compare that those movies from a parental
- 25:52Speaker 3: perspective to not only kids grow up and and outgrow
- 25:58Speaker 3: playing with toys, but that we, as their parents, are
- 26:02Speaker 3: those things they outgrow. And now that person is my
- 26:04Speaker 3: sworn in me.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Who oh man, Oh yeah, yeah that is Oh that's
- 26:12Speaker 1: that's tough. That's a profound thought. That is a profound thought.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah, talk about the best movies.
- 26:17Speaker 1: We've seen well before. I just want to sum this up, please,
- 26:20Speaker 1: the conversation that we've had about the body of work,
- 26:23Speaker 1: so to speak, of films in twenty twenty six. I think,
- 26:29Speaker 1: big picture wise, what's really interesting about this group of
- 26:32Speaker 1: films is that it kind of feels like with you know,
- 26:37Speaker 1: maybe award season changes things and things pick up steam. Yeah,
- 26:41Speaker 1: all that is subject to change, so to speak, but
- 26:44Speaker 1: as it stands now, this kind of feels like one
- 26:48Speaker 1: of those groups where an underdog could really rise. And
- 26:55Speaker 1: maybe it is obsession when we get to award season
- 26:58Speaker 1: and it is the film.
- 26:59Speaker 2: That's that's that's I think that's a I think that's
- 27:04Speaker 2: the one where if it doesn't get nominated, then what
- 27:07Speaker 2: got nominated in front of it in order to cause
- 27:10Speaker 2: this historic rise and a week after week after week
- 27:16Speaker 2: after we I mean that's something. I think it was
- 27:19Speaker 2: made for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, so for
- 27:23Speaker 2: four hundred million, and from what understand the director got
- 27:29Speaker 2: like a seven eight type deal eight digit deal. But
- 27:36Speaker 2: but but good for them. But yeah, and I know
- 27:38Speaker 2: you I have I saw it and loved it. I
- 27:41Speaker 2: know our buddy Brett Obb as we say, I really
- 27:45Speaker 2: would like to call you ODB, but he's passed.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Rest in peace, Rest and Peace or the Rest the
- 27:51Speaker 1: Wrestler ODB.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Oh Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I would like to watch
- 27:55Speaker 2: it again. But it's such a great movie and it
- 27:58Speaker 2: is creepy and it does everything it should be. And yep,
- 28:02Speaker 2: it's like good for them, like really good, good for
- 28:07Speaker 2: Curry Baker, like yeah, good for good for him.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Twenty twenty six, The Year of the Underdog. Perhaps, Yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: we shall see.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I would love to see it ride that way. And
- 28:16Speaker 2: it's got more than enough like kind of bragging rights
- 28:19Speaker 2: to say, hey, we should be we should be acknowledged.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And I think it would be a I mean a
- 28:26Speaker 2: tragedy if it wasn't recognized for very well, for what
- 28:30Speaker 2: it's been able to do.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Well, let's uh, let's get into it then. Our favorite
- 28:34Speaker 1: movies of the year so far. Who wants to start
- 28:36Speaker 1: us off?
- 28:37Speaker 2: So listen, we did a thing where we're gonna say, hey,
- 28:39Speaker 2: it's our top five. If you guys want to rank them.
- 28:41Speaker 2: You can. If you don't, it's fine, so we can
- 28:47Speaker 2: do do whatever. Stim Let's start with you.
- 28:50Speaker 1: All right. I want to bring up a documentary that
- 28:54Speaker 1: I saw as a part of the Atlanta Film Festival.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Oh Yeah six. It is called They Dreamed Cove the
- 29:01Speaker 1: cop And I had to pull up the synopsis on
- 29:05Speaker 1: IMDb because I'm sure they put it more eloquently than
- 29:09Speaker 1: I could. A director and his mother document their Puerto
- 29:13Speaker 1: Rican family over twenty years, facing loss through animation. They
- 29:17Speaker 1: celebrate memories while realizing each creation involves a painful goodbye.
- 29:23Speaker 1: This is one of the more creative and inventive movies
- 29:29Speaker 1: that I've seen in some time. It is it's painful
- 29:34Speaker 1: to watch, just in the sense that we're watching the
- 29:39Speaker 1: director of this film kind of it is a little
- 29:43Speaker 1: bit home movies. You're kind of compiling memories throughout his life.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But the profound impact that it had on me was
- 29:51Speaker 1: that feeling of watching your parents and your grandparents grow older,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and that is a very tough pill to swallow. I've
- 30:01Speaker 1: already lost my father, but to to get to those
- 30:06Speaker 1: moments in life, it's nothing can really prepare you for him,
- 30:11Speaker 1: and to see kind of someone else going through that
- 30:15Speaker 1: in this artful medium that he uses to document that.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I applaud him for it. It's very impressive. But then
- 30:24Speaker 1: there is also the technical aspect of this documentary where
- 30:28Speaker 1: the animation is just so vibrant and it pops and
- 30:32Speaker 1: it's just it's a beautiful movie. It's one of those
- 30:35Speaker 1: that you watch and you get to the end of
- 30:37Speaker 1: it and.
- 30:37Speaker 2: You just kind of the animation techniques too, like he.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Yeah, like you you appreciate the subject matter, but more
- 30:45Speaker 1: like you just it feels like the same feeling after
- 30:48Speaker 1: you've just had a really good cry.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I think it's one that again, like I haven't seen
- 30:54Speaker 1: a lot of movies from twenty twenty six, I'm kind
- 30:57Speaker 1: of behind in the overall volume compared to you guys,
- 31:01Speaker 1: But like They Dream is one that I think deserves
- 31:05Speaker 1: a shout out and should not get lost in the
- 31:07Speaker 1: shuffle from this year.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And I must say because we saw in the Landed
- 31:11Speaker 2: Film Festival when we talked about it, and it's a
- 31:16Speaker 2: it's a loving tribute to his mother.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it's and it's.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Very heartfelt, and I agree it is. It is one
- 31:26Speaker 2: of the best that.
- 31:27Speaker 1: He takes recordings of his grandmother and actually creates the
- 31:32Speaker 1: scenes using his mother to animate her mother, and he
- 31:39Speaker 1: animates himself to recreate It's so stand up straight, it's
- 31:44Speaker 1: so inventive and creative, and you think about like what
- 31:47Speaker 1: that must have been like for them to go through
- 31:49Speaker 1: for the sake of this art to share this, and
- 31:52Speaker 1: it's it's beautiful. I say this all the time about
- 31:55Speaker 1: film festivals. Sometimes they pissed me off because you you
- 31:59Speaker 1: watch some thing that just impacts you so much, and
- 32:02Speaker 1: you know, I can't find a physical copy of this
- 32:05Speaker 1: somewhere to act.
- 32:06Speaker 2: On top of that, a lot of people will not
- 32:08Speaker 2: see this for whatever yeah experience.
- 32:11Speaker 1: So I'm telling you, man, I saw like when if
- 32:17Speaker 1: it shows up anywhere, if it gets run at the
- 32:20Speaker 1: Bell Court.
- 32:21Speaker 2: I will be possible.
- 32:22Speaker 1: I will be waving the flag for it for for
- 32:25Speaker 1: people to go see it, much like the gas station
- 32:28Speaker 1: attendant also Atlanta Film Festival.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Before we get into it, do we want to talk
- 32:34Speaker 2: about an honorable mentions first?
- 32:35Speaker 1: Before we we could've I've got a couple.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Go ahead and let we'll go around and we'll hit
- 32:42Speaker 2: some of these honorable mentions first before.
- 32:44Speaker 1: So I would say Disclosure Day was not quite the
- 32:48Speaker 1: movie that I expected it to be, but I still
- 32:50Speaker 1: found it to be fun, like quintessential summer blockbuster style movie,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and I thought Emily Blunt deserves all the like her
- 33:01Speaker 1: performance in that. To go back to our conversation from before,
- 33:05Speaker 1: where maybe the field isn't really defined right now, I
- 33:09Speaker 1: think if the year ended right now, I think she
- 33:12Speaker 1: should be considered in the best actors field. Yeah.
- 33:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's that's not in my top five, but
- 33:19Speaker 3: in my top ten for sure. I enjoyed it a lot. Yeah,
- 33:22Speaker 3: I it it had. It had some aspects of like
- 33:26Speaker 3: traditional sci fi blockbuster that yeah, I mean, because it's Spielberg,
- 33:32Speaker 3: those things come naturally. But there were just some things
- 33:36Speaker 3: almost at times that I think would be perceived as
- 33:40Speaker 3: hokey in a lot of movies today, but belonged to
- 33:44Speaker 3: the genre in a lot of ways, and I like,
- 33:48Speaker 3: I appreciated that element of it that a lot of
- 33:50Speaker 3: those pieces of music plays when the bad guys come in. Yeah,
- 33:56Speaker 3: there's kind of this like there to some degree, they
- 34:02Speaker 3: leave out all of the here's the background of everybody
- 34:05Speaker 3: in this story, which is what every movie does. Now.
- 34:08Speaker 3: Some people see that as flat, but I kind of
- 34:10Speaker 3: appreciate that this is we're just in this together now,
- 34:13Speaker 3: and this is what we're doing, and we get the
- 34:15Speaker 3: pieces that we need. Am I going next?
- 34:19Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 34:20Speaker 3: Am I doing?
- 34:21Speaker 2: It's a live pushion.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Well I have another. Do we want to do all
- 34:24Speaker 1: of our honorable mentions at once? Because I do have
- 34:26Speaker 1: one more? Sam Raimi, send help.
- 34:30Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of that and it's It is
- 34:32Speaker 2: a fantastic movie, don't O'Brien. Rachel McAdams. It's a very
- 34:36Speaker 2: fun movie. I have my wife check it out when
- 34:39Speaker 2: it came on Hulu or whatever it's on.
- 34:41Speaker 1: It's on one of the streaming services because my wife
- 34:44Speaker 1: saw it and was like, oh, we should watch this,
- 34:45Speaker 1: and I was like, do you know what this movie is?
- 34:48Speaker 1: But she said no, and I said, okay, let's.
- 34:50Speaker 3: I thought it was like a romantic com.
- 34:53Speaker 2: No, all right, let's but they but they dug it
- 34:56Speaker 2: and Dylan Brian's great. But Rachel McAdams, she's so, she's
- 35:01Speaker 2: so fantastic.
- 35:02Speaker 1: She's got it.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Yeah, And I love where Sam Ramy worked with her
- 35:05Speaker 2: with Doctor Strange and whatever.
- 35:07Speaker 3: The Madness Multiverse, Madness Woman.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Which I liked it, but I like that he recognized
- 35:13Speaker 2: that she could come and do something like this and anyway,
- 35:17Speaker 2: she she's great and I've seen it. I've seen actually
- 35:20Speaker 2: this movie and a lot of people's top ten and everything,
- 35:23Speaker 2: and I'm like, you know what, it does deserve it.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Sam Ramy kind of brings his energy to it, and
- 35:28Speaker 2: Rachel McAdams is, like I said, sensational.
- 35:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm I'm high on that one as well.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Those are those are my two honorable mentions along with
- 35:36Speaker 1: my number five.
- 35:37Speaker 2: They dream that right right right now, that's fine.
- 35:40Speaker 3: I'll I'll just share one honorable mention because I feel
- 35:43Speaker 3: like we'll we'll hit some of these other ones, and
- 35:45Speaker 3: Sony's already hit a couple that I would have named
- 35:48Speaker 3: as well. Crime one O one.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Oh.
- 35:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's one of my favorite movies of the year.
- 35:54Speaker 3: It's not quite in the top five, but it's a
- 35:57Speaker 3: very I assume I've only watched it WinCE in theaters,
- 36:02Speaker 3: but I assume it would be a very enjoyable rewatch.
- 36:06Speaker 3: It's got a lot of heat vibes. And so that's
- 36:13Speaker 3: one that I really enjoyed and would recommend.
- 36:16Speaker 2: A lot, I will say, And it's one that I
- 36:20Speaker 2: really enjoyed, and I I'm sorry if this messes with
- 36:25Speaker 2: people stop five, but it's right beneath it. But twenty
- 36:29Speaker 2: eight years later as a Bone Temple, Ray Fines is
- 36:35Speaker 2: just phenomenal. I loved him, and twenty eight years later,
- 36:41Speaker 2: there's a real relationship part in this movie. It is
- 36:45Speaker 2: a horror, but there's so much comedy and then there's
- 36:48Speaker 2: I think a scene that's been talked about where he
- 36:52Speaker 2: kind of lets loose for a song he makes. He
- 36:57Speaker 2: makes this film. I think it's one of the best
- 37:00Speaker 2: movies of the year. I really do, certainly top ten
- 37:04Speaker 2: and Ray Fines is just sublime and I really enjoyed
- 37:09Speaker 2: I really enjoyed it. And I also want to give
- 37:11Speaker 2: a shout out to Elvis Presley in concert I. There's
- 37:18Speaker 2: been so much about him, but the fact that boz
- 37:21Speaker 2: Lerman and I'll be honest, when we first kind of
- 37:23Speaker 2: talked to when I first kind of saw BoSz Luhrman,
- 37:26Speaker 2: who did Elvis with that Austin Butler Tom Hanks like, oh,
- 37:30Speaker 2: he's just cashing in on his name. But this is
- 37:34Speaker 2: truly a different perspective on him. It deals a lot
- 37:38Speaker 2: with this Vegas residencies and concerts, but you also see
- 37:42Speaker 2: such a different side of him. That is just the
- 37:45Speaker 2: pure joy of making music and collaboration and him being
- 37:51Speaker 2: at the top of his game. And I remember walking
- 37:53Speaker 2: out of there, and I mean with IMAX, just the
- 37:55Speaker 2: sound and stuff is blaring and the songs he would sing,
- 37:59Speaker 2: and it very much was just a sensational reminder of
- 38:06Speaker 2: why he is the king of rock and roll. There's
- 38:08Speaker 2: always kind of this depressing side of it because the
- 38:11Speaker 2: way he went out, but the but when he did it,
- 38:14Speaker 2: and the way his devotion and commitment just to the
- 38:17Speaker 2: pure just music of it and performing it. It it
- 38:23Speaker 2: is sensational and I want to see it. Yeah, I again,
- 38:27Speaker 2: I saw it in Imax and the sound and I
- 38:29Speaker 2: was trying to get my in laws or who ended
- 38:31Speaker 2: up seeing it. I'm like, you have to see it
- 38:33Speaker 2: for what it is, because it's it's very powerful and
- 38:36Speaker 2: I really enjoyed it. It was much more than I
- 38:39Speaker 2: thought it would be.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Well, I've already.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Named it, so anyway they dream you guys, I've.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Already named my first film of the five, so Brett,
- 38:47Speaker 1: I think that puts you on the clan.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, my uh number five, which this is
- 38:52Speaker 3: kind of like low key favorite of the year, Like
- 38:55Speaker 3: when I think back of movies like this is one
- 38:57Speaker 3: I really love.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Tuner. Ooh, okay, don't we have a review of that
- 39:02Speaker 1: on Nashville Movie.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Yeah, So Brandon and I saw it together at the
- 39:06Speaker 3: Bell Court. In some some ways a very simple movie
- 39:14Speaker 3: kind of this a story that has been done in
- 39:18Speaker 3: ways of somebody that turns to a life of crime
- 39:20Speaker 3: for good reasons. But the acting and it's great, the
- 39:26Speaker 3: the aesthetic of it, the piece about the lead character's
- 39:31Speaker 3: got this sound sensitivity and the way that that's all
- 39:35Speaker 3: kind of brought in is really good. It's a very
- 39:41Speaker 3: it's been a couple of months, but what I remember,
- 39:43Speaker 3: I feel like it's a very just kind of smooth
- 39:46Speaker 3: watch and oh yeah and ride like.
- 39:48Speaker 2: It's Leah Woodhall who plays the main character, right, and
- 39:51Speaker 2: he's got a hearing deficiency thing that also he's a
- 39:55Speaker 2: piano tuner for Dustin Hoffman, who, by the way, I
- 40:00Speaker 2: miss Dustin Hoffen. He's great. I wish it was actually
- 40:02Speaker 2: in it more. But his hearing deficiency lets him fine
- 40:08Speaker 2: tune a piano but also be able to safe to
- 40:12Speaker 2: kind of crack open the safe to steal. And there's
- 40:16Speaker 2: a reason why he wants to steal and Hey, lu
- 40:21Speaker 2: Richardson's in it. She's great, and we did see it.
- 40:24Speaker 2: And the thing is, I hate that it didn't get
- 40:28Speaker 2: a wider release because here in Nashville we did not
- 40:30Speaker 2: play it Regal, did not play at a MC. It
- 40:33Speaker 2: was just at Bellcourt. But we did see it. It's
- 40:38Speaker 2: a fantastic movie. I agree, and I think it's got
- 40:42Speaker 2: one of the absolute best endings of a film I've
- 40:46Speaker 2: seen this year.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I put it at five, but it's on the
- 40:51Speaker 3: on paper, it's five on my list.
- 40:54Speaker 2: But wait, soone's coming out.
- 40:57Speaker 1: That didn't that wasn't recorded.
- 40:59Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Sorry, that just turned on the words.
- 41:02Speaker 3: Before I started the plane, we thought someone was breaking in.
- 41:05Speaker 2: For a pro I thought Samoa Joe was about to
- 41:07Speaker 2: come out and lay the smack of the down.
- 41:10Speaker 3: I put it five on paper on my list, but
- 41:13Speaker 3: in my heart it's probably higher than that. Like my
- 41:15Speaker 3: affection for it.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I really loved this list in my top five I had.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I had the same thing, Tuner. It was great. It's
- 41:24Speaker 2: a nice surprise. Yeah, and Leo would All's great and
- 41:27Speaker 2: he's going to be in Tony about the Anthony Bourdain movie. That.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I am excited about that.
- 41:33Speaker 2: It's great Dustin Hoffman. Haven't seen him in a while
- 41:36Speaker 2: and he's great in it. I wish he was I
- 41:38Speaker 2: wish I could get more of him, but it it
- 41:41Speaker 2: was a great It was a great film. And I
- 41:44Speaker 2: love that ending is so good and the way that
- 41:47Speaker 2: they do it, and I was it's really stuck with me,
- 41:52Speaker 2: So I agree. So Tuner Is is one of my
- 41:56Speaker 2: It's one of my top five. I will go ahead
- 41:58Speaker 2: and say that one of my top five is Obsession.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I'm just amazed, first of all, how it's done, but
- 42:06Speaker 2: also the performance is in that and it it really
- 42:12Speaker 2: kind of covers so much about relationships but also the
- 42:17Speaker 2: dynamics between a male and female, the selfishness, the selfishness
- 42:23Speaker 2: of that character and how it kind of takes over
- 42:27Speaker 2: but the female. And I really enjoyed it. There's a
- 42:32Speaker 2: lot of creepy moments. It's a lot of tense moments.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Underrated score two. I don't think people are talking about
- 42:39Speaker 1: the Yeah, and.
- 42:43Speaker 3: I'm kind of an interesting thing about that relationship dynamic
- 42:47Speaker 3: you're talking about is And to be honest, like, and
- 42:53Speaker 3: I'm not touting this as a good thing. It's kind
- 42:55Speaker 3: of like, how did I miss this? But you know
- 42:58Speaker 3: a lot of people are reflecting on kind of that,
- 43:01Speaker 3: the selfishness that kind of lands them in this position.
- 43:06Speaker 3: But that's the kind of thing that like routinely has
- 43:10Speaker 3: been in stories as just kind of a I mean
- 43:12Speaker 3: think of a movie like Ten Things I Hate About You,
- 43:18Speaker 3: Like character motivations in that are selfish, but it's propped
- 43:22Speaker 3: up in a way that's.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Is that Hecher's a joker. M m.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, it's propped up as like, oh, this is sweet.
- 43:30Speaker 3: He has such admiration for this girl that he would
- 43:34Speaker 3: kind of like connive and make this scheme to make
- 43:37Speaker 3: this happen. But this really twists all of that on
- 43:40Speaker 3: his head to the point where you would kind of
- 43:44Speaker 3: trap somebody in your own device.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Of Yeah, for sure.
- 43:48Speaker 2: And I butchered her name and I'm almost afraid to
- 43:51Speaker 2: do it again, but you can do it, INDI know
- 43:53Speaker 2: for it.
- 43:54Speaker 3: I think that's right.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Right. Yeah, she's fantastic. Yeah, there's been talk about her
- 43:58Speaker 2: being nominated, and she kind of taken in a stride.
- 44:02Speaker 2: She's fantastic. I mean, she really is. And some of
- 44:06Speaker 2: those scenes where she comes in and there's a couple
- 44:11Speaker 2: of scenes rather than in the bedroom she's in the
- 44:14Speaker 2: corner and there's one but in the car where she
- 44:17Speaker 2: kind of sneak attacks somebody. It's it's crazy, but it
- 44:22Speaker 2: works so well and their chemistry is off the charts.
- 44:28Speaker 2: And I didn't think that this would be my top five,
- 44:31Speaker 2: but I think as things have gone on and obviously
- 44:34Speaker 2: other films that have seen it's it's really quite the
- 44:39Speaker 2: accomplishment to do something like that that is scary and
- 44:44Speaker 2: creepy and funny, but also you can really find the
- 44:48Speaker 2: intensity of it all. But also there's that performance that
- 44:52Speaker 2: everybody kind of gravitates to of like how do you
- 44:58Speaker 2: do it? Like how did you do it where? And
- 45:01Speaker 2: for people who don't know with obsession, there's also this
- 45:05Speaker 2: great perspective that they didn't even that Curry Baker didn't
- 45:09Speaker 2: even have to do. But the fact of like not
- 45:14Speaker 2: having control of your body from a female perspective, from
- 45:20Speaker 2: that way that is carry you, I think is quite profound.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Is in many ways that maybe when you watch it
- 45:31Speaker 2: the first round, you're not connecting at all. I know
- 45:34Speaker 2: you've seen it I think twice, right, and I'm just
- 45:40Speaker 2: I'm just amazed by the process. I'm amazed by the
- 45:43Speaker 2: execution and it's I feel like right now, it's it's
- 45:48Speaker 2: the top it's the top five thing. And as I've
- 45:51Speaker 2: been talking about, which did I mention, I mean it's
- 45:54Speaker 2: made over four hundred million dollars. I mean that's crazy,
- 45:59Speaker 2: it's crazy.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Age Obsession is in my top five as well. I've
- 46:04Speaker 1: got it at three.
- 46:07Speaker 3: Yes, I've got it too on my list, and it's
- 46:11Speaker 3: kind of it's kind of moved up slowly. This is
- 46:13Speaker 3: the one for all of the reasons you've already said.
- 46:15Speaker 3: This is the one. When I like think back on
- 46:19Speaker 3: the year movies we were talking about earlier so far,
- 46:22Speaker 3: this is the one that constantly kind of like rings
- 46:25Speaker 3: in my head.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Go back to ye.
- 46:27Speaker 3: And that's why it's kind of moved up on my
- 46:30Speaker 3: list slowly, but surely very well.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I will if I have to be the flag bear
- 46:36Speaker 1: for this film, I will champion it proudly. I'm going
- 46:39Speaker 1: to mention the Sheep Detectives.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I'm on your team. It was on my honorable mentions
- 46:45Speaker 3: for sure.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I was so surprised by this film. It is to
- 46:50Speaker 1: me one of the more wholesome efforts that I've seen
- 46:54Speaker 1: in some time. I thought the humor was delightful and
- 46:59Speaker 1: I loved the setting. I loved the countryside. It made
- 47:04Speaker 1: me want to retire to.
- 47:06Speaker 3: A hill somewhere and just as a sheep.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Tend to my flock of sheep. But then the plot
- 47:13Speaker 1: was kind of fun. It kind of turns into a
- 47:15Speaker 1: pretty fun little who done it?
- 47:17Speaker 2: It knives out?
- 47:18Speaker 1: Yeah it is, or grass Onion as I've seen it called.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Classic.
- 47:26Speaker 1: Yeah. So I when we're talking about a year where
- 47:30Speaker 1: there hasn't been a whole lot that's really packed a punch,
- 47:33Speaker 1: this was one that really caught me off guard, and
- 47:36Speaker 1: I find myself thinking about it. Like when we presented
- 47:41Speaker 1: what's the best of twenty twenty six so far? The
- 47:44Speaker 1: first one that came to mind was The Sheep Detectives
- 47:46Speaker 1: for me, because I was like, people should go see
- 47:48Speaker 1: that movie.
- 47:49Speaker 2: It is very heartfelt. It's actually on Prime video now,
- 47:53Speaker 2: and it's a delightful surprise on what it could be.
- 47:57Speaker 2: Because I think when people associate talking in yeah, I
- 48:01Speaker 2: think it's kind of looked down on. But this is
- 48:03Speaker 2: very much in the I think a fantastic quality of
- 48:07Speaker 2: like Babe, where yes it's animals talking, but there's also
- 48:12Speaker 2: there's so much more going on and that and and
- 48:16Speaker 2: kind of emphasizing kind of the who is doing what
- 48:21Speaker 2: and what it means, and there's so much there's so
- 48:24Speaker 2: much heart in it. And I enjoyed it too. I
- 48:29Speaker 2: actually took my mom for Mother's Day to see it
- 48:33Speaker 2: and we liked it very much. And it and it
- 48:37Speaker 2: does add a lot too, there's humor to it.
- 48:40Speaker 1: There's a little something in it for everyone.
- 48:41Speaker 2: But yeah, it really is and it's it's pleasing in
- 48:46Speaker 2: ways I don't think people would have kind of like
- 48:49Speaker 2: understood just from watching the previews on it. I mean,
- 48:53Speaker 2: really there.
- 48:56Speaker 3: The way that I'll frame it is there's plenty of
- 48:59Speaker 3: movies that my kids want to go see that I
- 49:01Speaker 3: go see, and then I may not like review them
- 49:05Speaker 3: because it feels like why am I about to you know.
- 49:10Speaker 1: You like punching down?
- 49:12Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, that's right.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Yeah I can tell the letter box you just say
- 49:16Speaker 2: you watched it, that's right.
- 49:17Speaker 3: But this one rises to such a level that it
- 49:21Speaker 3: kind of and I don't and I don't even mean
- 49:23Speaker 3: that negatively about other kids movies. But no one needs
- 49:28Speaker 3: me to say that Mario Galaxy movie is a bunch
- 49:31Speaker 3: of cut scenes of Easter eggs, Like how no one
- 49:34Speaker 3: needs me to do that, but this one rises to
- 49:37Speaker 3: a level for all the reasons y'all are saying that
- 49:41Speaker 3: there's more there. There's a good amount like it deserves
- 49:44Speaker 3: to be in a conversation like this among the other
- 49:47Speaker 3: good films that have come out this year.
- 49:49Speaker 2: And I think the fact that it's just kind of
- 49:51Speaker 2: caught a lot of people by surprise on the approach
- 49:55Speaker 2: of its themes and everything. I think it is heavy.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Yeah, it is themes of grief, and it is all.
- 50:03Speaker 2: That talking animal movie. It brings a lot to the
- 50:07Speaker 2: forefront of dealing with grief and loss, and but also
- 50:11Speaker 2: the kind of fun little you know who done it?
- 50:13Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Brett, you're up.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Number four for me is the drama. This is one
- 50:22Speaker 3: I've also seen multiple times, this one, and I guess
- 50:27Speaker 3: we should try to keep it this way for those
- 50:29Speaker 3: that have not seen it that as far as like
- 50:32Speaker 3: what the big.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Is?
- 50:35Speaker 3: But I you know, there was a lot of hype
- 50:37Speaker 3: around it coming out, like what.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Is this movie?
- 50:40Speaker 3: And like what is the thing in the movie? And
- 50:44Speaker 3: I was mostly surprised by that something had slipped through
- 50:48Speaker 3: that kind of gave me a hint, But I was
- 50:50Speaker 3: mostly surprised. But I love the I had two very
- 50:54Speaker 3: different viewing experiences. The first time, I viewed it in
- 50:57Speaker 3: a very tense like it made me very uncomfortable the
- 51:02Speaker 3: first time, sure, and not even because of what the
- 51:05Speaker 3: thing is, but just the interactions between the characters. It
- 51:09Speaker 3: all made me uncomfortable.
- 51:10Speaker 1: It's very it is very tense like in that regard.
- 51:13Speaker 1: It's not just the subject matter, but the dynamic between
- 51:16Speaker 1: the characters, which I think is feeling like you guys need.
- 51:21Speaker 2: To chills, very intention we calm down, and it's even
- 51:25Speaker 2: presented a way like, oh, well, since we're sharing things.
- 51:29Speaker 3: Yes, And I left that viewing very kind of contemplative
- 51:36Speaker 3: about like the way we used view others, the way
- 51:40Speaker 3: we place judgment on others, the way that we think
- 51:43Speaker 3: the things that we think we know about a person
- 51:46Speaker 3: or not, but also.
- 51:49Speaker 2: The overanalyzing of it's just a person I want to marry,
- 51:53Speaker 2: is just the person I fell in love with, and
- 51:56Speaker 2: if so, what she's done, and you really prejudice in
- 51:59Speaker 2: the half of what person does.
- 52:02Speaker 3: And then I went back took my wife and the
- 52:05Speaker 3: second time we saw it with a pretty full theater
- 52:08Speaker 3: and people were laughing the whole time, and well, and
- 52:12Speaker 3: I think I think it can be, and so like
- 52:15Speaker 3: that to me is kind of like the diamond aspect
- 52:20Speaker 3: with your emotions, Like well that that uncomfortability I felt
- 52:24Speaker 3: for awkwardness turns into laughter because it's like I don't
- 52:27Speaker 3: know what to do with this and this and in
- 52:31Speaker 3: that in that way and again not giving the details,
- 52:34Speaker 3: but in that way. The first time I saw it,
- 52:36Speaker 3: it felt very serious to me to a point and
- 52:39Speaker 3: then got kind of zany and that was kind of
- 52:41Speaker 3: a turn off for me. The second time, the whole
- 52:44Speaker 3: thing kind of felt zany, and it kind of clicked
- 52:47Speaker 3: a little bit more that the.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Back end of it.
- 52:51Speaker 3: So this is one that it I'm I What I
- 52:56Speaker 3: like about this one so much is that these heavy
- 52:58Speaker 3: hitter stars said yes to this very unorthodox story. Again
- 53:05Speaker 3: we were talking about like not just I mean these
- 53:09Speaker 3: two are also in Dune, also in the Odyssey, so
- 53:15Speaker 3: like they're in those big like summer blockbusters, those ip movies,
- 53:19Speaker 3: but that they're also willing to do this kind of.
- 53:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and they make it such a great it's such
- 53:27Speaker 2: a great dynamic between the two. I think that's also
- 53:30Speaker 2: a movie that I really kind of appreciate.
- 53:32Speaker 3: The ending.
- 53:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is well done. It grows increasingly unhinged
- 53:39Speaker 1: in ways that continue to.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Support comes back to kind of that it is quite
- 53:44Speaker 2: sincere on just like who you are, who they are,
- 53:49Speaker 2: and this kind of acceptance of of who you, I mean,
- 53:53Speaker 2: of whatever you were then who you are now and
- 53:57Speaker 2: how does that define you?
- 54:01Speaker 1: There is something about like reconciling your life's journey in
- 54:04Speaker 1: that and kind of accepting that, you know, maybe it
- 54:09Speaker 1: wasn't sunshine and rainbows for someone else that you don't know,
- 54:13Speaker 1: you only know them in their current state, and that's
- 54:16Speaker 1: where it's kind of like there is some real heart
- 54:20Speaker 1: to this and it just kind of makes I like
- 54:22Speaker 1: those films that kind of point the mirror back at
- 54:26Speaker 1: you and you're like driving home from the theater, like
- 54:30Speaker 1: thinking about can I do? Yeah? And I found it
- 54:36Speaker 1: to be very you are very creative, very well acted,
- 54:42Speaker 1: very well shot, just like pretty pretty solid across the board.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Is this one of your top five?
- 54:49Speaker 1: It's my number one? Is it? Yeah?
- 54:54Speaker 3: Skipped it?
- 54:56Speaker 2: Yeah? One? I want to mention it is called Blue.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I Sophie Ramvari's phenomenal feature directory debut. I put in
- 55:08Speaker 2: a letter box. It's a mesmerizing exploration of memory and
- 55:11Speaker 2: so much more so. It is a it's sort of
- 55:15Speaker 2: a family. It's kind of told through the daughter, and
- 55:19Speaker 2: there's a brother who we don't quite know what he's
- 55:23Speaker 2: up to, We don't quite know what he's into. It
- 55:27Speaker 2: kind of seems like he is sort of the outcast
- 55:32Speaker 2: of it. He shows he shows love, he also shows anger,
- 55:37Speaker 2: and he shows resistance and rebellion. But what happens in
- 55:43Speaker 2: telling that story is she flips it and there's a
- 55:47Speaker 2: point where she goes back. It's almost like she's she's
- 55:50Speaker 2: time traveling to show even though he might be your
- 55:57Speaker 2: brother or you might think you know a fan member,
- 56:01Speaker 2: you really don't and you don't know what he went
- 56:03Speaker 2: through and you don't know what he's going through. And
- 56:07Speaker 2: there's been a lot of people and a lot of
- 56:08Speaker 2: reviews that have that for better for worse, it really
- 56:12Speaker 2: kind of flips the whole script on what is happening.
- 56:17Speaker 2: But I really love the fact it just it's about
- 56:22Speaker 2: memory of like I remember this, but then here's the reality.
- 56:29Speaker 2: And as I've gotten older or not, as the character
- 56:31Speaker 2: has gotten older, you see it from a different perspective,
- 56:35Speaker 2: and you also see it in a way of like, Okay,
- 56:42Speaker 2: it's this is not how I remembered it, and you
- 56:45Speaker 2: kind of formulate what you think you know about somebody,
- 56:49Speaker 2: including someone in your family that you live with, maybe
- 56:52Speaker 2: is not true or is it what you thought it
- 56:55Speaker 2: would be, or maybe you did forget the loving aspects
- 56:58Speaker 2: of it, and maybe you just remember the troublesome things
- 57:01Speaker 2: that he was going through. And then there's a I
- 57:04Speaker 2: don't want to reveal too much, but it is a
- 57:06Speaker 2: it is a situation where there's a scene where she's
- 57:11Speaker 2: kind of flipped it and she's talking the daughter has
- 57:14Speaker 2: grown up, and she's also the one who's kind of
- 57:16Speaker 2: making this film, and she's talking to the parents and
- 57:19Speaker 2: she's kind of laying it out on this is how
- 57:23Speaker 2: it is, and this is how it's going to end,
- 57:25Speaker 2: and and and it is heartbreaking, but it's just done
- 57:30Speaker 2: in such a loving way and it does kind of
- 57:33Speaker 2: make you a think, like, I'm an only child. I
- 57:35Speaker 2: don't have siblings, But it's very much in the form
- 57:38Speaker 2: of how you can live with someone but maybe never
- 57:41Speaker 2: really know what they're going through. And it's it's I
- 57:46Speaker 2: really thought it was phenomenal stuff and it's one of
- 57:49Speaker 2: the few I watched it. I really enjoyed it. Like
- 57:53Speaker 2: for what it is and appreciated it. And then as
- 57:57Speaker 2: the days went on, I felt myself think about it more.
- 58:00Speaker 2: I feel myself reading about it more, and it's like, yeah,
- 58:03Speaker 2: you know, for an hour and a half movie, there
- 58:05Speaker 2: is really a lot to it, and there's so much.
- 58:09Speaker 2: It's so layered, and depending on where you are in
- 58:13Speaker 2: your life and how old you are and if you
- 58:15Speaker 2: have siblings or whatever, it can mean so many different things.
- 58:20Speaker 2: And we do have Kevin wrote a review on this
- 58:24Speaker 2: and it's he calls it one of the best films
- 58:26Speaker 2: of the year on Nashvillemovie Dispatch dot subset dot com.
- 58:30Speaker 2: But I have to mention it and it is one
- 58:32Speaker 2: of one of my absolute favorites, and it is one
- 58:36Speaker 2: that just kind of is so loving in a way,
- 58:39Speaker 2: and then it's also really makes you think about the
- 58:42Speaker 2: life you're living and like I said, whether you have
- 58:44Speaker 2: siblings or not. But then it's also it's so profound
- 58:47Speaker 2: and it's just in its little ways, and it's like
- 58:50Speaker 2: an hour and I said ninety something minutes, but I
- 58:54Speaker 2: really respected the way that she kind of flipped it
- 58:58Speaker 2: and went back in and I guess I just imagine,
- 59:02Speaker 2: like my son talking to my wife and I and
- 59:04Speaker 2: saying you you're gonna do this, and you did what
- 59:09Speaker 2: you could, but it ain't happening and you won't come back,
- 59:13Speaker 2: and and it it. It's a gut punch. It's a
- 59:17Speaker 2: gut punch of a film.
- 59:18Speaker 1: The Have you seen Blue Heroing?
- 59:21Speaker 3: I haven't. I've heard a lot of good things.
- 59:23Speaker 1: Yeah, same here, same here. I started to watch it
- 59:25Speaker 1: today actually, and then when they started speaking a different language,
- 59:29Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I can't actually watch this and
- 59:31Speaker 1: work at the same time. So I need is it
- 59:34Speaker 1: need to save it?
- 59:35Speaker 3: Is it available somewhere?
- 59:38Speaker 2: Think by the end of the month it will be
- 59:39Speaker 2: streaming on Criterion Channel.
- 59:42Speaker 1: So there's how resourceful do you want to do?
- 59:45Speaker 2: Yeah, there's ways you can watch it.
- 59:46Speaker 3: Let the hair understand the ways you can watch it.
- 59:50Speaker 1: The only movie left in my top five that we
- 59:52Speaker 1: haven't talked about is a big one that I'm not
- 59:56Speaker 1: sure if we want to save or not until till
- 59:59Speaker 1: the end, because.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: I say, go for it.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I think it's Project till Mary. Probably is it safe
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to say the cinematic event of the year so far?
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: So far? I think so really fun, really fun experience
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: that early Sunday morning Matinee undefeated in my opinion. But
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I you want to talk about a movie with a
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: big heart. I the subject matter is awesome, the story
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: was awesome, the acting was awesome, But the the bond
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: that is created throughout this film is what ultimately I
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: mean I was, I was bawling watching this film. So
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: for me, it kind of it stood out in that regard,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: a very very emotional film. Fantastic technically, I mean, this
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: is what going to the movies is all about.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And you hadn't read the book, correct, No, I didn't
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: because this is the same guy that wrote The Martian Right. Yeah,
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: and Brett nine have a podcast where we talked about
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: it and Sean as a review on Nashville Moviedispatch dot
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Substate dot com. That's one of mine? Is it in
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: one of yours? Too?
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Yeah? It was one for me? Is it two for you?
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: It was two for me? Yeah?
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: And what's the number one for you?
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: The drama?
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Okay, and we'll do a recap, but yeah, I think
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Project Hill Mary is probably my number one as well.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: We got to see an imax. It is beautiful. It
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: was stunning. Seventy millimeter was it? Chris who the directors.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: They also did The Spider Man and they did Tim Miller,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: Lord and Miller. The way they're able to adapt that
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: book is amazing, and the and the relationship between Gossly
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: and Rocky is phenomena. It is one of the best
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: cinema experiences I've had, certainly this year. I there's not
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: there's there's really not much to date. There's really there
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: is so much joy and entertainment wise, and it is
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: a sci fi spectacle and funny enough. As we talked
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: about with Spielberg and Disclosure Day, this does kind of
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: feel like that kind of sci fi Spielberg movie.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I mean it was. Some people called it
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: this Generation's et.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and it is. But there's so much built on
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: that relationship between Gossling and Rocky and what it means,
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: and it's very heartfelt, it's very sincere, it's very funny,
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: it's it is mesmerizing when we went to see it
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: in the Imax and seventy milimeters. I mean it really
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: it's one of those that you can enjoy across the board.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: But I feel like Project Tell Mary is like a
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: Nolan or a Knee movie. If you saw it in
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: that format, it could it can take your breath away?
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Brett? What what about it? Made it number one on
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: your list?
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: It hit me in the exact right moment, And part
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: of that was we had just finished reading the book,
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: and so I read it. Yes, I listen to some
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: of it, which I have no regrets about.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: We call you a reader.
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: But having taken in that source of material, I was
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: going to ask you this question Stony. It you know,
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: you read a book and you're kind of and if
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: the if the materials sort, if the material is fresh
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: in your mind, you're kind of checking off moments as
- 1:03:46Speaker 3: you go, Here's what comes now?
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Or how is it going to be handled?
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: Or seems And like you said, I think the way
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: they adapted and edited from the book was done.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: So well, which how rare is that for you? Walk
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: away and you think they actually made the right adjustments. Yes,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: from page to screen.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: I actually preferred the movie over the book, which I've ever.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Seen overall entertainment value, Yes, yes.
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: We talked about this on that initial podcast. The book
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: is very science danse and they did a great job
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: of filtering through that, giving you what you needed without
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: including all of it. But I have heard a lot
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: of people who have not read the books say they
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: felt like the runtime was a little bit long. Did
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: it hit you that way?
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: No, not at all.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: I don't. I saw it twice, so I saw it
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: when we saw it on the Imax, and then we
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: went back and took the Boys, which was another like
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: this is a great movie moment.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: And your wife went with us the first time, right
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: because we all talked about you and they loved it too.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: In her favorite movie is Princess Diary, so we didn't
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: know how she would react.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Actually, practical magic or that's close.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Sorry, you should have ran.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: With Yeah, yeah, I won't let her listen to this. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: I just it's it's the one that all of that
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: is the positive. And I do have it at number one.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: I think by the end of the year, if things
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: kept on the trajectory they are, I don't expect it
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: will be number one for me at the end of
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: the year. I honestly think even with the current list,
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: that obsession could overcome it. For all the reasons y'all
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: are saying are the reasons I couldn't deny it.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Would you say, you're into women not having control of
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: their bodies. That's good, that's what I just want to
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: on a record on record, but it's just.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: The novelty of obsession I feel like could could overcome.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: But they're only halfway through, and we talked about some
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: big movies that are coming. But I still think of
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: the end of the year that that cinematic experience that
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: very few people can make it so memorable. Project hell
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Mary is absolutely one of those.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: Those are all the pieces that made me feel like
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: I can't take this right of this spot, right right
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: point right.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I think the only thing that's left for me is
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: it's in limited release and it actually just came out
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: and wide releases past Friday, but I have the Invite
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: in my letterbox. I give it four and a half
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: out of five. I think it's one of Olivia Wild's best.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: I was a fan of Book Smart. I loved it.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Don't worry Darling. I feel like a little shaky. Oh yeah,
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I didn't hate it, but it's not quite what I thought.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: But with that and then all of it was like
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Olivia Wilde, Harry styles thing and Jason's yeah, and I
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: read somewhere where it's almost like gave her the freedom
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: to be able to do something like the Invite and honestly,
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: I'm I'm thrilled about it. I got to see it
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: in an advance here locally at Court Theater in thirty
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: five millimeter. It was great. I always associate thirty five
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: milimeters when we see The Holdovers, which I think was
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: one of the best viewings. But I've said this about
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: the invite and undeniably smart and sophisticated and surprising and
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: hilarious comedy that is led by for sensational performances. Each
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: one is flawless as the next while being enveloped in
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: an awkward, chaotic and horny dinner party where manners are
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: thrown out the window along with a first rate script.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Olivia Walla's direction is sublime. It's her best effort yet.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: Her use of design and space and the juxtaposition of
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: tones are knows to be remarkable. And I ended was
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: saying within the last and absurdity, which there is, is
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: an honest and it's an insightful and a rather relatable
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: portrait analyzing grown up relationships and are hankering for human connection.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: It's an easy, an hour and forty something minute movie.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: It is based off of a It's an adaptation of
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: a foreign movie it's done so well. Seth Rogan, Penelope Crews,
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Edward Norton, and Olivia Wild.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: Are they the only four in it?
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: Uh? Basically, yeah, it's just them. It's just them four
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: and their dynamics great. Their chemistry is so captivating and
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: and just it's intoxicating just to watch them. And there's
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: a scene where there's all this kind of things and like,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: I kind of associate like the way Seth Rogans reacts
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: to certain things as I feel like that's how I
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: would kind of bring. That's kind of the attitude I bring.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: But there is a thing no matter where you are
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: in your relationship, new old, newly, wit, married for ten years,
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: fifty years, there's something that just resonates in it all
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: and trying to navigate that and it's not easy. It
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: is hard work, but it's also funny. And there's also
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: this kind of exploration of just like of sex, and
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: there's no judgment in it. And I really enjoyed it.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I was.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: I was really impressed with what Olivia Wild was able
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: to bring from Don't Worry Darling to this, and I
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: do think this is her best film and I'm excited
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: to see what she does next. But I'm also very
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: excited to see Seth Rogan being the role that he is,
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: which he's kind of Seth Rogen but not Olivia Wilde
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: really takes takes it on. There are the husband and
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: wife Edward Norton Penelope Cruz. I think they I think
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: they say they're less than two years in on their relationship,
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: but they're also working with what works. And then you
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: kind of get the details of how what's led to
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: this and it's it's really great. I highly recommend it.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: I think again it's an out nation wide now. It's
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: definitely worth the watch. I know you wanted to go
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: see it, and you should, and it's great. I'm so
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: I it makes me wonder it's a grown up film
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: that we just don't see anymore. And I was watching
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: a thing where Edward Norton was on Dax Shepherd's podcast
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: and any kind of referred to where like he didn't
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: quite know if if Mike Nichols kind of came in
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: and took over, or if he's just smiling down. But
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: it is one of those and it's very much of
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: a seventies inspiration of like of the films made around then,
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: and of course where Mike Nichols in Mike Nichols, you know,
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: started his career, and it's just so well done, and
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: it's so it's so smart and it's sharp and it
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: doesn't dumb down things for you. And all four of
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: them could be nominated, like there are. All four have
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: their have their sensational moments, and so I really I
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: really enjoyed it.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: Was that it did we get through all five?
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Do we all do?
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: Which the only other one I had but we've already
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: talked about is the Bone Temple, which was that was?
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: That was three? I believe for me, I really enjoyed
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: it a lot for all the reasons Brandon said, I
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: liked twenty eight Years that came out last year better. Yeah,
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: but I'm excited about potentially where it's going.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Fines that man can do no wrong. Also want to
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: give a shout out. We had a couple of guys
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: who have been phenomenal joined in Nashville Movie Dispatch in Marge,
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Kevin and Sean. I reached out to them. Sean, it's
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: a no particular ranking, but his was Toy Story five,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Project Tail Mary, the Invite Epic with Elvis Presley and
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: the Drama. Again Sean does have a review of Project
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: tail Mary that's on Nashville Movie Dispatch dot subsec dot com.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: I did the impossible and ranked all five Toy Story movies.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: That includes obviously Toy Story five, so check that out.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Kevin is ranked, so I will start with five. He
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: has a tie with Exit eight, which I have a
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: review of, and also back Rooms has a tie.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Not a movie we've talked about the I'm surprised it
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: didn't come up.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I you know what, It's fine, but I I'm not
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: into whatever was going on YouTube, so I wasn't that
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: familiar with and they just released a one called Get
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: It's like extended sixteen fifteen or sixteen minutes of it
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: called Everything Must Go or Everything's Got to Go or
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: something like that.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: I was just gonna say, shout out to Exit eight.
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: I have a so I just kind of through the
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: year and putting like this belongs on the best of
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: the year. This for me right now, I have thirteen
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: movies and I've got Exit eight on that list because
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: that one that one really said to me.
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: Too, yeah, which is based off a video game. But anyway,
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: like I said, there's a podcast review of it that
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: I did. Number four Blue Heron, which I talked about,
