- 0:00the shadow dossier act i the colonel who changed
- 0:06sides oleg gordievsky was a career officer of
- 0:13the kgb the soviet union's intelligence service
- 0:17and the son of a kgb officer himself But in the
- 0:221960s, while stationed in Denmark, he watched
- 0:24Soviet tanks crush the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia
- 0:28in 1968, and something in him broke with the
- 0:32system he served. In the early 1970s, while still
- 0:38in Copenhagen, he began working secretly for
- 0:41Britain's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6. For
- 0:45more than a decade, he passed information to
- 0:48the British from inside the KGB. In 1982, he
- 0:53was posted to the Soviet embassy in London, which
- 0:56gave MI6 a spy inside the KGB's own station in
- 1:01the British capital. His value was enormous.
- 1:06Among other things, he helped the West understand
- 1:10how frightened the Soviet leadership had become
- 1:13during the Able Archer crisis of 1983, which
- 1:17this dossier covered in an earlier file. His
- 1:19reporting helped convince Western leaders that
- 1:22the Kremlin genuinely feared a surprise nuclear
- 1:25attack. In early 1985, he was promoted to become
- 1:30head of the KGB's London station. In May 1985,
- 1:43just as he was about to take up that post, Gordievsky
- 1:46was suddenly called back to Moscow. He knew it
- 1:50could be a trap, but refusing would have exposed
- 1:52him. He went. Soon after arriving, he was taken
- 1:59to a KGB dacha outside Moscow, given brandy laced
- 2:04with a drug meant to loosen his tongue, and interrogated.
- 2:08He managed not to confess, but he understood
- 2:11that he was under suspicion, that he was being
- 2:14watched, and that eventually they would come
- 2:17for him. He had been betrayed. We now know that
- 2:22Aldrich Ames, the CIA officer whose treachery
- 2:26this dossier has also examined, had given his
- 2:29name to the KGB that spring. Act 3. Pimlico.
- 2:39Years earlier, MI6 had prepared an escape plan
- 2:43for exactly this situation. It was codenamed
- 2:47Pimlico. and it had to be triggered by a signal.
- 2:50On a particular evening, Gordievsky was to stand
- 2:54on the pavement of a street in central Moscow,
- 2:57holding a plastic bag from the British supermarket
- 2:59Safeway. If a British officer walked past him
- 3:03eating a Mars bar, it meant the signal had been
- 3:06received and the escape was on. In July 1985,
- 3:13he stood at the spot with his Safeway bag. For
- 3:16what felt like a very long time, nothing happened.
- 3:19Then a man walked past, looked at him, and bit
- 3:23into a Mars bar. On the morning of July 19th,
- 3:30Gordievsky went out jogging, as he often did,
- 3:33and slipped his KGB watchers. He made his way
- 3:37to a Moscow railway station and took a train
- 3:40toward Leningrad, and from there headed toward
- 3:43the Finnish border. At a lay -by near the border,
- 3:49two cars carrying British diplomats pulled over,
- 3:52as if for a picnic. Gordievsky climbed out of
- 3:57the undergrowth and into the trunk of one of
- 3:59the cars. The diplomats had brought their own
- 4:02families, including a baby, as cover. At the
- 4:06border, Soviet guards with dogs stood close to
- 4:09the cars. One of the diplomats' wives is said
- 4:12to have changed her baby's diaper on the trunk
- 4:14of the car. The smell and the fuss helping to
- 4:17keep the dogs and guards distracted. The cars
- 4:23were waved through into Finland. Inside the trunk,
- 4:26Gordievsky heard music playing from the car's
- 4:29stereo. Sibelius' Finlandia, the signal that
- 4:33he was out. He was taken on to Norway and then
- 4:36flown to Britain. Gordievsky had escaped, but
- 4:47he had to leave his wife and two young daughters
- 4:49behind in Moscow. The Soviet authorities sentenced
- 4:53him to death in his absence. His family was kept
- 4:56under watch and not allowed to leave for six
- 4:59years. They were finally allowed to join him
- 5:02in 1991 as the Soviet Union was coming apart,
- 5:06but his marriage didn't survive the separation.
- 5:12In the West, Gordievsky became one of the most
- 5:16valuable sources of the late Cold War, advising
- 5:19British and American leaders, including Margaret
- 5:23Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, on how the Soviet
- 5:26leadership thought. He lived the rest of his
- 5:28life under protection in England and died there
- 5:32in 2025. Operation Pimlico is still considered
- 5:36one of the most daring escapes of the Cold War.
- 5:39A spy smuggled out of the Soviet Union in the
- 5:42trunk of a car. to the sound of Finlandia. This
