- 0:01Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth shall do
- 0:05what set you free. Amen.
- 0:08May freedom be known today as we come to the truth of God's Word.
- 0:11Meet me in Mark chapter 15. We're going to be looking at the
- 0:151st 5 verses only. But I'm sure you're aware that
- 0:20this is not the only place where we will be today in the Bible.
- 0:23Keep your Bibles closed. Keep your Bibles open.
- 0:28We have many things to touch on today because I want God's Word
- 0:31to speak always, especially on this matter, because my goal
- 0:35with this message is to address a single question, just one,
- 0:39since it is based on the central theme of this passage, I'm going
- 0:44to read it. Maybe you'll see it and.
- 0:47Then we'll reflect together. Mark 15 beginning in verse one
- 0:51and as soon as it was morning. The chief priest held a
- 0:55consultation with the elders and the scribes and the whole
- 0:57council, and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered
- 1:01them over to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, Are you
- 1:07the king of the Jews? And he answered them, You have
- 1:13said so. And the chief priest accused him
- 1:16of many things, and Pilate again asked him, Have you no answer to
- 1:21make? See how many charges they bring
- 1:23against you. But Jesus made no further
- 1:27answer, so that Pilate was amazed.
- 1:33Up to now the title, the reference King of the Jews has
- 1:40not appeared in the Gospel of Mark.
- 1:43We find it here appearing for the first time and it is
- 1:47actually repeated a total of 6 times in the entirety of the
- 1:52wider section of this text. We saw it in verse 2, Pilot
- 1:57asking Jesus, are you the King of the Jews?
- 1:59Now Scroll down to verse 9. And he answered them, saying, do
- 2:03you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?
- 2:08Verse 12 And Pilot again said to them, Then, What shall I do with
- 2:12the man you call the king of the Jews?
- 2:17Verse 18 And they began to salute him, Hail King of the
- 2:23Jews. Verse 26, An inscription of the
- 2:30charge against them, Read The King of the Jews, and verse 32
- 2:35counts. If king of Israel is synonymous
- 2:37with King of the Jews, which it is, look at it with me.
- 2:40Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the
- 2:44cross, that we may see and believe.
- 2:47Those who are crucified with Him also reviled him.
- 2:52There is no doubt in our minds that the Holy Spirit seeks to
- 2:56emphasize this theme as a relates to the person of Jesus.
- 2:59Christ. So with this observation in
- 3:02mind, the question we will seek to answer is this is Jesus
- 3:08Christ of Nazareth, the King of the Jews?
- 3:13That the sum the answer is obvious and to others the
- 3:18question in itself doesn't seem to be worthy of a full
- 3:22discussion. However, my aim today is to
- 3:25demonstrate that this discussion is extremely significant, and
- 3:31examining the answer will reveal its importance.
- 3:35This is the question that Pilate asked Jesus after the Sanhedrin
- 3:40brought him. The morning after the Lord stood
- 3:43before the Jewish courts, and according to both the Scriptures
- 3:48and secular historical sources, Pontius Pilate was the Roman
- 3:53governor assigned to manage the Judean province, and he did so
- 3:59for 10 years, from 8026 to 36. His main responsibility was to
- 4:04maintain law and order, and it's very likely that Pontius Pilate
- 4:09was in Jerusalem at this time so that he can supervise the events
- 4:13during the Passover celebration. And you might be wondering why
- 4:18the religious leaders brought Jesus to Pilate.
- 4:21And there are different reasons, and one of them is because they
- 4:24sought to distance themselves away from Christ's death and one
- 4:28of the Romans to be held responsible for his execution.
- 4:32And there are many other things that we can say about Pilot.
- 4:35And there are many other things that we can say about the Jewish
- 4:37leader strategy. But for the sake of time, let us
- 4:41think over Pilots first recorded words in this gospel, the Gospel
- 4:47of Mark. What caused them to ask Jesus if
- 4:53he was the king of the Jews? You don't have to guess.
- 4:58Luke tells us and gives us a more detailed account of why
- 5:02this was important to discuss. And Luke 23 verse 2 we read, and
- 5:12Luke 23 two. Then the whole company of them
- 5:15arose and brought him before Pilate, and they began to accuse
- 5:19him, saying we found this man misleading our nation and
- 5:22forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he
- 5:26himself is Christ a king. Pause, reflect, take your time.
- 5:33Here you have the Jewish Council bringing a case against the Lord
- 5:37Jesus before the Roman government.
- 5:40And if you pay attention, there are three specific allegations
- 5:43that are being made against Christ.
- 5:45The first one is that he is misleading, misguiding the
- 5:49nation with his teaching. Second, that he was forbidding
- 5:54the people of Israel of paying their taxes to Caesar.
- 5:58Finally, he was declaring himself to be Christ.
- 6:04Christ is not Jesus's last name, you know that right?
- 6:10It's the Greek word for anointed 1 and in the Jewish context it
- 6:15is synonymous with being a king. Now here's what's fascinating to
- 6:20me. Pilate does not even entertain
- 6:24the 1st 2 accusations. He goes straight for the last 1.
- 6:29He asked him, are you the king of the Jews?
- 6:31He's more interested in that than not paying taxes to Caesar
- 6:35potentially, or him misleading the people of his time.
- 6:40What was it? I wonder if Pilot was alarmed
- 6:44like Herod was. You remember when the Magi came
- 6:47from the east and they paraded in Jerusalem and they were
- 6:51asking about he who was born to be the king of the Jews?
- 6:59Was Pilot scared that his antennas go up?
- 7:05Was Pilot being sarcastic as he asked this question to Jesus,
- 7:10who stood before him, bloodied, bruised, battered?
- 7:18Are you the King of the Jews? It could be a mixture of things,
- 7:24but what's more important is determining the implications of
- 7:27a positive answer. As we read, Christ was silent
- 7:32with many of the accusations that came against him.
- 7:34But when Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews, he was
- 7:39undeniably clear. What did he say back in Mark 15
- 7:43verse 2? And Pilate asked them, are you
- 7:46the king of the Jews? And he answered them, you have
- 7:49said so. Now some really like to massage
- 7:54certain verses to mean something that it's not or to cause
- 7:58confusion. And so they would say that Jesus
- 8:00answer here is quite ambiguous and he he is suggesting that he
- 8:05is, he is saying that he is the king of the Jews, but he's kind
- 8:09of placing it on pilot as though he's saying that's what you're
- 8:12saying so that he can suddenly confirm it while not
- 8:16incriminating himself. Jesus is being very
- 8:21straightforward here. And if you have any doubt about
- 8:23that, you don't have to turn there.
- 8:24But when John tells us about this interaction, Jesus is
- 8:28something that most of you know, he elaborates on his answer and
- 8:31he says what? My Kingdom is not of this world.
- 8:38So if you say you have a Kingdom, what does that mean
- 8:41about you? You're a king.
- 8:45There is no confusion here. Jesus is being very clear, no
- 8:49ambiguity. He is affirming that he is a
- 8:51king, although the origin and the purpose of his Kingdom
- 8:56differ from those of worldly governments.
- 9:00But as Jesus answer merely a historical one, here's where it
- 9:03gets relevant. Is this just a history study?
- 9:08Does it only carry repercussions for the Jews and the Romans of
- 9:11his time? Absolutely not.
- 9:15Jesus being the King of the Jews is highly significant for all of
- 9:18us in this room and beyond these four walls, and I want to share
- 9:23why that is the case. I want you to consider 3
- 9:25dimensions of this. Jesus being the King of the
- 9:30Jews. Fulfilling that role satisfies
- 9:34#1 past predictions #2 it carries present implications.
- 9:44And lastly, it calls us to future anticipation.
- 9:48Past, present, future, past predictions, present
- 9:52implications, future anticipation.
- 9:55Let's talk about it. You ready for Bible study?
- 9:57Ready or not, here we go. Mimi in Genesis, go to chapter
- 10:0149. Many centuries before Christ
- 10:04entered into the world, God called a man named Abram to be
- 10:08in covenant with him. Abram later named what?
- 10:12Abraham. Good.
- 10:13This is going to be a little bit more interactive.
- 10:15Abraham and he was promised in this covenant to be a great
- 10:20nation, a nation that would be blessed so that all nations
- 10:24could be blessed. And Abraham, receiving this
- 10:28promise, was also promised a son named Isaac, who would be the
- 10:32channel to bring that promise closer to reality.
- 10:36So Isaac is born, but it would not be further realized until
- 10:40one of Isaac's sons named Jacob was born.
- 10:44And as Jacob became a man, he himself had many children.
- 10:50He had twelve sons and those 12 sons would later become the
- 10:55tribes that would constitute this nation called Israel.
- 10:59Israel is a name that God gave to Jacob.
- 11:03The name itself has been issued and declared by God.
- 11:09The significance of this is that at the end of Jacob's life, he
- 11:13called his twelve sons to come near before his departure, and
- 11:16he prophesized over each of them.
- 11:20Some of these prophecies were uplifting and encouraging, and
- 11:24some other prophecies were punitive because of how some of
- 11:28these sons sinned. So Jacob, in declaring these
- 11:33prophecies, not only speaks about what's going to take place
- 11:36in the lives of his sons, but its main purpose, its primary
- 11:40goal, is to declare what's going to take place with each of their
- 11:42descendants. And so Jacob, in his old age,
- 11:47begins. He prophesized over Reuben, then
- 11:53he speaks to Simeon, then he proclaims something over Levi,
- 12:02then he comes to the fourth in line, Judah.
- 12:07And that's where we want to look.
- 12:08We want to look at what God spoke through Jacob for this
- 12:12particular tribe, Judah. We won't read the prophecy in
- 12:15its entirety, but with me rather in verse 8 of chapter 49.
- 12:19Genesis 49, Verse 8 Judah, your brothers shall praise you.
- 12:26Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies.
- 12:29Your father's sons shall bow down before you.
- 12:33Judah is a lion's cub. You have gone up from the prey,
- 12:37my son. He stooped down.
- 12:40He crouched as a lion and as a lioness.
- 12:44Who dares rouse him? The scepter shall not depart
- 12:49from Judah, nor the ruler staff from between his feet, until
- 12:54tribute comes to him, and to him shall be the obedience of the
- 12:59peoples. I can just imagine the shock on
- 13:03the faces of those brothers when he said this.
- 13:07Remember, Israel and his sons were only few in number at this
- 13:10point. They are not living in the
- 13:12promised land. They're living in Egypt, away
- 13:14from the Promised Land. However, Judah is told something
- 13:18incredible. He is told that his descendants
- 13:21will have preeminence in that they will possess a ruling
- 13:24position among his brothers. And that's why I'm bringing your
- 13:27attention to this, because it's one of the earliest prophecies
- 13:32of royalty in connection to the people of Israel.
- 13:38And this idea of royalty is communicated by the imagery of a
- 13:41scepter. You've probably seen a scepter.
- 13:43It's an ornamented staff, and it symbolizes sovereignty.
- 13:49And in practical terms, then, this prophecy means that
- 13:51eventually kings were going to arise from the line of Judah.
- 13:59And what was in seed form when this was prophesied sprouted
- 14:04when God raised a man called David from the tribe of Judah.
- 14:09And the sprouting now would blossom more and more as
- 14:12succeeding kings would follow David.
- 14:15And that's what you and I are studying in the book of first
- 14:17and 2nd Kings on Friday. A little teaser for you to join
- 14:20us Bible study on Fridays. But there's an imperative peace
- 14:26to this prophecy that some some might miss.
- 14:28Look at verse 10 of Genesis 49. The scepter shall not depart
- 14:33from Judah, nor the ruler staff from between his feet, until
- 14:36tribute comes to him, and to him shall be the obedience of the
- 14:41peoples. Now if you have any other,
- 14:44virtually any other word for word translation of the Bible,
- 14:47it's going to read differently. And some of you are probably
- 14:50seeing that in your Bibles. Most of us in here read the ESV.
- 14:53The ESV renders the second part of this verse a little
- 14:56differently, so this is what you might read if you have like a
- 15:00King James, a new King James, or an NASB translation.
- 15:03The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler staff
- 15:06from between his feet. Until what Shiloh comes capital
- 15:12S, and to him shall be the obedience of the people.
- 15:17What's going on here? Well, the etymology of the
- 15:22Hebrew word Shiloh is a little complicated.
- 15:26There are a variety of possible meetings for that word, and one
- 15:29of the meanings of it is he to whom it belongs or that which
- 15:36belongs to him. And that's how the ESV renders
- 15:40it. So instead of giving the name
- 15:43itself, the ESV seeks to give one of the meanings of the name
- 15:48and applying it here. And we can say so much more
- 15:51about this word, Shiloh. But I don't want to park here
- 15:53too long because regardless of what translation you have, one
- 15:57thing is undeniable. This prophecy anticipates a
- 16:02particular individual from the royal line of Judah.
- 16:06Do you see that? Again, it says until tribute
- 16:09comes to him and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
- 16:17Do you understand the significance of this?
- 16:20So yeah, Judah can expect that there will be a royal dynasty,
- 16:25but they also should be expecting a particular king, one
- 16:31specific particular individual that will emerge from this royal
- 16:36line. Something is leading to a
- 16:38person, not just the government, not just a monarchy.
- 16:41That's not the only thing in view here.
- 16:42Primarily, what's in view here is a person until tribute comes
- 16:48to him, and to him shall be the obedience of all the peoples.
- 16:51This is confirmed by another prophecy, one that came from an
- 16:56unexpected person, a Gentile. Not just a Gentile, a wicked
- 16:59Gentile. You remember that after this the
- 17:01nation of Israel was delivered from Egypt.
- 17:05They were brought into the wilderness and they were being
- 17:07guided to the Promised Land. And along that journey there was
- 17:11a man named Balaam, who was hired by Bailek, the king of
- 17:16Moab. Moab saw this nation marching
- 17:20through the wilderness. The king was fearful, so he
- 17:23hires a man to curse them. And so Balaam attempts to
- 17:30pronounce a curse. And what does God do?
- 17:33He turns it into a blessing. And he attempts to curse again,
- 17:36and he turns into a blessing. And he does this until his final
- 17:40Oracle, where he says something absolutely astounding.
- 17:44Can I, can I pause here and just say something?
- 17:48I'm worried that when we read verses like this, it doesn't
- 17:52grip us as much because we have such accessibility to the Bible
- 17:56and it's kind of digitized on our phones and so easy to just
- 18:00flip open. I want you to feel how amazing
- 18:03this is. We're touching ancient writings.
- 18:08These are historical things that have been dictated and preserved
- 18:13up until this point. We're dealing with God's Word
- 18:16here. From centuries and even
- 18:19thousands of years ago. And these prophecies are making
- 18:24leaps throughout the timeline of history, and you're going to
- 18:28realize that they're harmonious. This is a supernatural book that
- 18:31we're holding today. Don't lose your awe of what
- 18:34we're touching on. Balin pronounces this Oracle and
- 18:40and tucked in the last Oracle is this incredible echo.
- 18:45Look at Numbers 24 verse 17 with me.
- 18:52Numbers 24 verse 17. I will wait for you, Balaam
- 19:06says. I see him, but not now.
- 19:10I behold him, but not near. Like how much more specific can
- 19:14you get in that it's going to be in a distant future?
- 19:19Who is he? A star shall come out of Jacob.
- 19:23Oh, look at this. And a scepter shall rise out of
- 19:28Israel, shall crush the forehead of Moab, and break down all the
- 19:32sons of chef. Notice here that this prophecy
- 19:35of a Kingdom emerging out of Israel is reinforced, but not
- 19:38just that. There's an individual in view.
- 19:42Him. I see him, but not now.
- 19:45I behold him, but not near so. So whoever this individual is,
- 19:50he is personified by two symbols of authority and prominence.
- 19:54He is a * and he is a scepter that shall rise from Israel.
- 20:00And in case there is any confusion of what this prophecy
- 20:03is conveying, Balaam makes it undeniably clear because it's a
- 20:07spirit speaking through Balaam. Look at verse 18 and 19.
- 20:11Edom shall be dispossessed, Sira also his enemy shall be
- 20:15dispossessed. Israel is doing valiantly, and
- 20:17one from Jacob shall exercise dominion and destroy the
- 20:23survivors of cities. No doubt that the same Spirit
- 20:27who guided Jacob to prophecy over Judah moved Balaam to
- 20:32remind us and all peoples of a distinct ruler metaphorically
- 20:38identified as a star and as a scepter.
- 20:40And if you're confused, still he's going to have dominion.
- 20:43And it will come at a future time.
- 20:47And as time goes on, the Spirit of God will become even more
- 20:51precise with this particular prophecy.
- 20:53And as I mentioned earlier, the Lord will raise a man.
- 20:57We're told that he would come from not just Israel, not just
- 20:59Jacob, but from the tribe of Judah.
- 21:03And at some point when Israel established a royal monarchy,
- 21:08David was chosen to be the first king from the tribe of Judah.
- 21:15And early in his reign, David was approached by God.
- 21:19And God does something spectacular.
- 21:23He makes a covenant with him, and in that covenant He makes a
- 21:27more precise promise that has its roots from Genesis.
- 21:33He tells David this in second Samuel 7.
- 21:37And you don't have to turn there unless you are writing notes.
- 21:40Second Samuel 7 verse 12 and 13. This is what God says from His
- 21:44mouth to this man. When your days are fulfilled and
- 21:48you lie down with your Father's, I will raise up your offspring
- 21:53after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish
- 21:58His Kingdom. He shall build a house for My
- 22:02name, and I will establish the throne of His Kingdom.
- 22:07So not only are we told that there is going to be a scepter
- 22:09that comes from Judah, not only are we told that He will come
- 22:13from Judah, but we are even told specifically that He will come
- 22:17through the seed of David, the Lion of David, the body of
- 22:21David. So again, we're progressing here
- 22:24in redemptive history and we're seeing the Lord getting more and
- 22:27more specific. And this section specifically
- 22:30verse 14 of Second Samuel 7 is confirmed to be about Jesus.
- 22:37You'll find that in Hebrews one, verse 5.
- 22:40But we're getting ahead of ourselves here.
- 22:43You can imagine how thrilling this was.
- 22:46You can imagine how exciting this was for David and for the
- 22:49people of Israel. He shows it in the same chapter.
- 22:52He's so overcome by emotion that he just pours out in praise and
- 22:56Thanksgiving that he would he would be found worthy to be
- 22:58chosen. And his descendants to have
- 23:02everlasting rule and dominion. That one of his sons will
- 23:05exercise such authority. But the hope of that promise
- 23:11becomes increasingly dim after David's life, because one king
- 23:18after the next succeeding him will mar the Davidic dynasty
- 23:25because they will fail to uphold the righteous standard that God
- 23:28asked of his kings and of the nation as a whole.
- 23:33And if there was one king that that did come up and bring good
- 23:36to the land and bring religious reform, all it took was the
- 23:38following king to reverse and just bring down all the good
- 23:42that was preceding them. And so it got so bad.
- 23:49That God now begins to raise up more and more prophets to tell
- 23:54the people of Judah specifically, judgement is
- 23:57coming. You've rebelled against me.
- 24:00You refuse to repent. So here is my final act of
- 24:05chastisement. You're going to be removed from
- 24:08the land. I'm going to raise up a foreign
- 24:11nation, and they're going to take you from this place that
- 24:14I've promised you. Now you have to understand that
- 24:16to the average Jew, this was unthinkable.
- 24:18God gave them this land. God conquered armies and foes
- 24:23and kings to give them this piece of real estate.
- 24:27And now all of a sudden he's telling them you're going to be
- 24:31removed. Yes, I promise it to Abraham,
- 24:35Isaac and Jacob, but your sin. Will cause me to vomit you out
- 24:40of this place. And they dismissed it.
- 24:47They called guys like Jeremiah false prophets and there are
- 24:50other prophets, they were telling him.
- 24:51No, no, no. Peace, peace, don't worry about
- 24:54it. Such things are absurd.
- 24:56They will not happen. But the promise of exile was
- 25:02starting to be realized, and so there was growing fears that the
- 25:07certainty of Israel's future was not so certain.
- 25:13So the same prophets who pronounce judgment, exile,
- 25:18destruction from time to time would be called by God to give a
- 25:24message of hope and to remind the very same people who are
- 25:28going to be disciplined of God's faithfulness despite their
- 25:33unfaithfulness. And one of the most, as you
- 25:37heard earlier, one of the most important prophets to declare
- 25:40that message was Jeremiah himself.
- 25:42I'm still reading Jeremiah, my personal reading, and it's
- 25:46incredible to see how much he talks about this very thing.
- 25:51Look at Jeremiah 23. This is somewhere where you
- 25:53should turn. Jeremiah 23, verse 5.
- 26:04Jeremiah 23, verse 5. Remember, what I'm about to read
- 26:08to you is given in the context of Judah being severely judged.
- 26:12To the point that they'll be removed from the promised land.
- 26:15But look what Jeremiah says in chapter 23, verse 5.
- 26:18Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will
- 26:21raise up for David a righteous branch, and he shall reign as
- 26:26king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and
- 26:30righteousness in the land. In his days.
- 26:32Judah will be saved and Israel will dwell securely, and this is
- 26:36the name by which you will be called.
- 26:37The Lord is our righteousness. So in the midst of judgment, God
- 26:42is assuring His people that the promise He made to David would
- 26:45still stand. It would not be nullified, it
- 26:48would not be cancelled, despite the rebellion and their
- 26:51idolatry. You notice how this king is
- 26:56referred to this time not as a star, not as a sceptic, but as a
- 26:59what? Is it there as a branch?
- 27:06I could stop here and talk about the significance of that title
- 27:10branch and show you the handful of times that this title branch
- 27:13is mentioned in the Old Testament and how it amazingly
- 27:16points to the person and ministry of Jesus Christ.
- 27:19But you don't want to stay here for another hour, do you?
- 27:22Do you see the plight of the preacher?
- 27:24It's not what am I going to say? It's what I have to leave out.
- 27:27So we will not do that. We'll talk about Jesus, the
- 27:30righteous branch, another day. What we want to focus on is the
- 27:34promise. David is going to know a son.
- 27:41The Davidic line is going to be preserved, and we see here that
- 27:46the Lord addressed a misleading conclusion that was gaining
- 27:52traction. Again, they're being surrounded.
- 27:55The rumors are now becoming true and they're thinking we're done
- 27:59here and this is what was spreading, right?
- 28:04The Lord pronounced this promise.
- 28:06But look at Jeremiah 33 and look at verse 24.
- 28:22Have you not observed that these people are saying the Lord has
- 28:27rejected the two clans that He chose?
- 28:30Pause. What does He mean by that?
- 28:33The two clans, Remember, Israel was divided at this point.
- 28:36There's a northern Kingdom and a southern Kingdom.
- 28:37So those are the two clans that are being referred to.
- 28:39And what were people saying? People were saying that the Lord
- 28:44rejected the two clans. So in its entirety, its identity
- 28:47are the people of Israel. Are people still saying that
- 28:51today? Yeah, they are saying that
- 28:55today. Notice what the Lord says next.
- 28:58Thus they have despised my people so that they are no
- 29:02longer a nation in their sight. Are people saying that today?
- 29:08They are saying this today. So you have to understand that
- 29:12the Jews are despised by many and that they are regarded not
- 29:18as a true nation. That the Jews today are not the
- 29:21Jews in the Bible, that they don't deserve a sovereign state.
- 29:24That the Jews are to be rejected in many ways.
- 29:32What a mistake that is. Whether you are professing
- 29:36Christian or not, take note. God doesn't like that and
- 29:42defense he makes can be understood in this way because
- 29:45look what he says in verse 25. Thus says the Lord, if I have
- 29:48not established my covenant with day and night and the fixed
- 29:52order of heaven and earth, then I will reject the offspring of
- 29:56Jacob and David my servant, and will not choose one of his
- 29:59offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and
- 30:03Jacob, for I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on
- 30:06them. You see what he's saying there?
- 30:09Look at verse 25 again. If I have not established my
- 30:12covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and
- 30:15earth, then I will reject the offspring of Jacob.
- 30:19Pause. You can translate it in this
- 30:21following way. There's a better chance for God
- 30:24to abandon his supervision of the order and the operations of
- 30:29the universe than for him to relinquish and deny his covenant
- 30:32with Israel. There's a better chance for him
- 30:42to remove himself from the governance of the affairs of our
- 30:46systems in this universe that for him to cast off.
- 30:50The people of Israel from being a nation and His people.
- 30:56You have a problem with that? You have a problem with the
- 30:57Bible, not with the preacher, my friend.
- 31:01And that's why he says something later on in Jeremiah 46, verse
- 31:0628. Why so much Bible?
- 31:08Again, deal with the Bible. I'm just telling you the Bible.
- 31:13So you deal with the Bible and faithfully interpret it.
- 31:18Jeremiah, 4628. He says in that passage, I will
- 31:22make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven
- 31:26you, but of you I will not make a full end.
- 31:31How do you deal with that? Isn't it amazing that throughout
- 31:35history kingdoms, empires, and civilizations have vanished, but
- 31:41the people of Israel remain, though they have in their long
- 31:46history experienced many calamities, even calamities that
- 31:49have brought them to near extinction.
- 31:51God tells them, I will discipline you.
- 31:53God told them I will punish you, but I promise to never make a
- 31:56full end of you. What's at stake here?
- 32:01I'll tell you what's at stake. Listen here, you professing
- 32:03Christians, I'll tell you what's at stake.
- 32:05God's character is at stake. This is not about race, this is
- 32:10not about this is not about favoritism.
- 32:12This is about what God said and he said I will never make a full
- 32:17end of you. But Israel were not only
- 32:22promised the preservation of their people.
- 32:25Notice again at verse 26, he says then I will reject the
- 32:29offspring of Jacob and David, my servant, and will not choose one
- 32:33of his offspring to rule over the offspring of Abraham, Isaac
- 32:37and Jacob. So it's not just about the
- 32:39people, it's about the royal line.
- 32:45God's program and plan for a king to still arise is in motion
- 32:53despite all that Israel has done.
- 32:55God says I made an unconditional promise to David.
- 32:59I'm going to keep it because I don't lie.
- 33:04A king is still coming. Or we can stay here for the next
- 33:0845 minutes and look at verse after verse and Isaiah and
- 33:11Jeremiah and Zechariah and Zephaniah.
- 33:12We can spend all day here looking at these things, but I
- 33:17think the picture is clear. A king is coming and nothing
- 33:23will change that, even the unfaithfulness of the people who
- 33:27were supposed to usher him in. And I'm speaking, I hope, to a
- 33:30group of people filling this room who believe that not just
- 33:34the king is coming. The king came.
- 33:37He arrived and this is what we see the Angel of Gabriel
- 33:42proclaiming to a virgin girl named Mary and Luke chapter 1
- 33:46and 31 to 33 where he said, behold, you will conceive a son,
- 33:53and his name shall be called Jesus.
- 33:56And this Jesus will take the throne of his father David, and
- 34:02his Kingdom will be established forever and ever.
- 34:08Now I want you to pretend that you have never read the New
- 34:11Testament. Imagine everything that you just
- 34:14heard in this past 45 minutes. I don't know how long it's been,
- 34:17but imagine everything that you just heard now was fresh to you
- 34:22up to the point of Luke chapter 131 to 33.
- 34:25Wouldn't you think God? No way the long-awaited king has
- 34:32come. Wouldn't you think that euphoria
- 34:35would sweep over the land after this angelic declaration?
- 34:41The people should be elated, especially in the context of
- 34:44when this was declared. They're under Roman oppression.
- 34:48They are succumbed to sin and corruption.
- 34:52He's here. He's.
- 34:55Come, but that's not what we see.
- 35:00Let me remind you how we open the service or specifically the
- 35:04sermon. This baby who would be born, his
- 35:07name would be called Jesus, would grow up to become a man.
- 35:09And this man would not just have a reputation of being the son of
- 35:14David. He proved it and they denied
- 35:20Him, and now he's standing before Pilate ready to be
- 35:26condemned to death. Which brings us to the present
- 35:31realization. The people who were promised him
- 35:36and were presented Him rejected Him, and as you heard Jesus here
- 35:47said, He is the King of the Jews.
- 35:49But what would now become of the promised king?
- 35:51How could a king be a king if the people that he's called to
- 35:56govern deny you? Jesus gives the answer to that.
- 36:04The next few verses I'm about to show you are absolutely
- 36:09imperative for you to grasp. Jesus gives the explanation to
- 36:15how He can be a king, though the people that he is called to
- 36:20govern denied him. Matthew 21 verse 43.
- 36:26Therefore I tell you He's speaking to the Pharisees and
- 36:28the religious leaders. Therefore I tell you, the
- 36:30Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a
- 36:34people producing its fruits. You reject me, I reject you.
- 36:41This is not immediate. This was after He'd done
- 36:42miracles, after He fulfilled prophecies, after he had shown
- 36:46them over and over again that He is the sinless son of David and
- 36:51they had nothing and wanted nothing to do with him.
- 36:56So let me tell you what Jesus words here doesn't mean.
- 36:59It doesn't mean that because the Jews rejected Jesus, that
- 37:02salvation that was once not available to the Gentiles is now
- 37:06granted to them. That's a gross misunderstanding
- 37:09of this verse, to think as though because the Jews denied
- 37:12Jesus, the plan being God's salvation is to give, to give us
- 37:17a chance, as though we Gentiles, if you're not a Jew here, you're
- 37:19a Gentile or an afterthought. Do you know how I know that to
- 37:23be the case? Because God from the beginning
- 37:25always had in mind the salvation of the nations.
- 37:29And throughout the Old Testament you have people who are Gentiles
- 37:31getting saved. So that's not what this means.
- 37:38Instead, what it means is that this is so important.
- 37:41By transferring the Kingdom from the people of Israel to another
- 37:45people, God is essentially removing the honorable position
- 37:51and privilege of being the vehicle that brings the message
- 37:55of salvation to the world. It no longer now belongs to the
- 37:58people in the nation of Israel, but is awarded to the Church.
- 38:05Israel failed to be the faithful witness, the light to shine, the
- 38:12means to draw people into the truth, because they have turned
- 38:16their back on Messiah. And So what the Lord says, if
- 38:21you read very carefully, is that he's going to take that
- 38:24privilege, that honorable responsibility, and give it over
- 38:28to another people who will constitute both Gentile and Jew,
- 38:31the entity called the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 38:35And that's why he says you're in the same verse, that the Kingdom
- 38:38of God will be taken away from you and given to a people
- 38:41producing its fruits. And that makes more sense now
- 38:46when you hear verses like First Peter 29 where Peter is speaking
- 38:50to Gentiles and he says, but you are a chosen race.
- 38:55You are what a holy nation you are what a people for his own
- 39:00possession. You are what a royal priesthood.
- 39:03All those identities were exclusive to Israel up to the
- 39:06point of the new covenant. Now it's shared with the
- 39:11Gentiles. But what do those identities
- 39:13mean? He finishes it here in First
- 39:16Peter 29, Your chosen race, your royal priesthood, you're a holy
- 39:19nation, you're a people for his own possession.
- 39:20Why? Why?
- 39:21Why? What does that do?
- 39:23This is what it does, that you may proclaim the excellencies of
- 39:26Him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous
- 39:29light. So you understand now, right?
- 39:32For the Kingdom to be transferred from the people of
- 39:34Israel to the Church means now the Church has been granted the
- 39:38responsibility and the honor of being ambassadors of this
- 39:42Kingdom. Ah, then this means that Israel
- 39:50is no longer relevant. And all those promises in the
- 39:55Old Testament can either be reinterpreted or disregarded
- 40:00altogether. No it doesn't mean that, because
- 40:05Jesus statement here doesn't teach that God has replaced
- 40:07Israel or erased Israel by giving the Kingdom of God over
- 40:14to another people. It just means that for a time,
- 40:18he has set them aside. But a time is coming when they
- 40:23will be grafted in again. So people often quote Matthew
- 40:272143 to make a case that the idea of Israel as a people and
- 40:33as a state and as a national identity, it's just like it
- 40:37means nothing. So what do you do with Matthew
- 40:4123? This is after Jesus gives a
- 40:44series of scathing woes to the same people and he says this at
- 40:49the end of Matthew 23. Look at verse 38 and 39.
- 40:58See your house is left to you desolate.
- 41:03So people also quote that verse. Your house is left to you
- 41:06desolate, but read verse 39 would you?
- 41:10For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, blessed
- 41:14is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 41:17Until implying what? There is a time coming when the
- 41:21same people who have been removed from that place of honor
- 41:28in the world of being the channel of spiritual blessings,
- 41:32a people who, as we read earlier, his house has been left
- 41:37desolate. There is a time coming where
- 41:39their eyes will be open. They will see Jesus again and
- 41:42they will say he is our Messiah. That's coming.
- 41:46Whether you like it or not, it's coming.
- 41:47It's going to happen. I don't know why you would
- 41:50oppose that idea. That's a glorious thing.
- 41:54Underline that word until there's a time coming when
- 41:58national Israel will acknowledge Jesus Christ as their savior.
- 42:04And if you want to know exactly how that's going to happen, sit
- 42:07with your family around the dinner table in the living room
- 42:11and read Zechariah chapter 12 and 14.
- 42:14And you will see the play by play blueprint of how this is
- 42:18going to happen. And it is then where God will
- 42:24fulfill all his promises, the promises that he made to
- 42:26Abraham, the promises that he made to David and to the people
- 42:30of Israel as a whole. And this does not mean, of
- 42:33course, that Jews cannot be saved until that glorious
- 42:36revival comes. Jews have been getting saved.
- 42:42The early church was comprised of Jews and check this out.
- 42:47The church has been the means to draw the Jewish people into
- 42:50saving faith in Jesus Christ. And this is something for you
- 42:56and I to consider because it's all over the New Testament as
- 43:01individual Jews are coming in to be saved.
- 43:04It will culminate when Jesus Christ Himself will do the
- 43:07complete work and redeem the nation as a whole, that as a
- 43:12national identity and a corporate confession.
- 43:15They will hail Jesus as their king.
- 43:18Is Jesus the king of the Jews? Yes, but Israel has not realized
- 43:23it just yet. They will though, which leads us
- 43:28to the future anticipation. Here's our final verse together.
- 43:33Paul elaborates on this. In case you feel like this was
- 43:38more lopsided and Old Testament leaning Romans 11, I just want
- 43:51to read you one verse. The whole point of Romans 11 is
- 43:55really Paul echoing Jeremiah where the people of his day were
- 43:59saying God has cast off his people.
- 44:03Paul answers that precise question in light of the new
- 44:06covenant. What has become of the people of
- 44:08Israel since they have rejected Jesus Christ?
- 44:11If Jesus Christ is the king of the Jews, what has become of
- 44:14them since they have denied Jesus?
- 44:15And that's his thesis right here.
- 44:18But notice what he says here in Romans 11, verse 12.
- 44:20Now if there being the people of Israel, now if their trespass
- 44:24means riches for the world and if their failure means riches
- 44:28for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean?
- 44:34So Paul's argument here is absolutely brilliant.
- 44:38You got to take your time to understand what he's saying.
- 44:40Here's how he's breaking this down.
- 44:42If the Israelites unbelief led to their trespass, which in turn
- 44:48enrich the world, how did it enrich the world?
- 44:52Well, it was giving rise to the Church of Jesus Christ and the
- 44:57world has been blessed by the church's impact in the nations.
- 45:02If there's sin 'cause salvation to spread across the globe.
- 45:08Here's what Paul is saying. Then what will become of the
- 45:10world in their full inclusion if their denial did this?
- 45:16What will happen in their righteousness when they embrace
- 45:19Christ? You see Paul's train of thought,
- 45:24and it should leave you wondering, yeah, what would
- 45:26happen if we have, as Gentiles, benefited from.
- 45:31The Jews shutting their door in the face of Christ, what will
- 45:36happen to the Gentiles when that day comes and they open the door
- 45:42and say blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord?
- 45:46Well, This is why you have to understand Bible prophecy, and
- 45:48it makes it makes so much sense now.
- 45:51Because the nation of Israel accepting Jesus Christ as their
- 45:56Messiah coincides with Jesus Christ establishing His
- 46:02physical, literal reign on the earth.
- 46:09And this world will know universal peace.
- 46:12The Church will rule and reign with him, and both Jew and
- 46:17Gentile will behold the promise keeping God who fulfilled His
- 46:21word to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and the Gentiles.
- 46:27That's what's coming. And so this was a lot to take
- 46:34in, perhaps in one sitting, and it was purely theological,
- 46:39wasn't it? So let me, let me tell you how
- 46:43studying this, not just in this past week but throughout the
- 46:46years has made an impact on me. Let's make this now applicable,
- 46:52and I hope it impacts you. 1 It just highlights the goodness and
- 47:00the faithfulness of God. When he says something, he means
- 47:04it, no matter who he said it to. So the same God who keeps his
- 47:09word to a person or people, I can trust that he'll keep his
- 47:14word for the church and for me as a follower of Jesus Christ. 2
- 47:21To pray and believe God for the salvation of the Jewish people.
- 47:25Yes, to to preach the the gospel to all nations.
- 47:28That's the Great Commission. But the church doesn't have the
- 47:31greatest history and how they have dealt and addressed the
- 47:34Jews. But to believe that God can do a
- 47:42work in their hearts, not just when he comes back and opens
- 47:46their eyes, but between now and then.
- 47:49Paul tells us in Romans 11 that salvation has come to the
- 47:52Gentiles for many reasons, and one of the reasons is to provoke
- 47:55the Jews to jealousy. I've shared this testimony so
- 47:59many times. I've always wondered how is it
- 48:01that the Jewish people would be provoked to jealousy through the
- 48:04church, by the church because of the church.
- 48:06And I remember hearing a testimony from a Jewish woman
- 48:09that gave light to this. She came to Christ as a Jew.
- 48:12She believed Jesus Christ as her Messiah.
- 48:14And one of the things that. Stirred her was when she knew
- 48:18Gentiles who knew the Old Testament and the Hebrew
- 48:21Scriptures better than her and she thought how is it that me as
- 48:24a Jew, I did not know my Bible like these Christians did?
- 48:29And when she come to find out is that she studied the word of God
- 48:31for herself. Jesus was the Messiah, you see.
- 48:37God is not done with this people.
- 48:39They will be saved and we have as a church the responsibility
- 48:43to preach the gospel to all nations, including them.
- 48:49And lastly, the feeling that I had in my heart when studying
- 48:53this for today, after gathering my thoughts and just seeing the
- 48:57Symphony of the Scriptures, is to push myself away from my
- 49:00desk, get before God and from my heart to hail Him as my King.
- 49:08You're my King, and not only are you my King, Lord Jesus, you are
- 49:13the King of kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 49:16And Revelation 11 promises that the kingdoms of this world will
- 49:20become the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
- 49:25Is he your king? What did you hear in this past
- 49:29hour? Did you hear my thoughts?
- 49:30You heard ancient prophecies placed before you all pointing
- 49:37to unanimously the person of Jesus Christ.
- 49:39What are you going to do with that information, my friend?
- 49:42Like, how can you actually walk out of here and not come to a
- 49:45conclusion about where you stand on this issue?
- 49:49He is the king of the Jews. Now, here's my question to you.
- 49:51Is he your king? Because whether you like it or
- 49:55not, he is going to be the king of kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 50:00He is today, and he's going to demonstrate it in an undeniable
- 50:03way, perhaps very shortly. But you have to make him king
- 50:08today. He is the king of a spiritual
- 50:10Kingdom. We are part of that Kingdom.
- 50:14And one day he will come to rule and reign physically with his
- 50:16Kingdom. And you have to make a choice
- 50:18between now and then. Will I surrender?
- 50:22Will I love him? Will I receive him?
- 50:25Will I crown him? Oh, I pray that you would.
- 50:27The way that you crown him as king is by repenting of your
- 50:30sins and believing that this king who was promised a throne,
- 50:34we're also told, would suffer for the sins of his people.
- 50:37That's why the Jews. Missed him because they were so
- 50:41focused on the kingly aspect of him and not realizing that this
- 50:46king would also lay down his life and suffer for his
- 50:49subjects. And so you have the opportunity
- 50:54to understand that this king is not just coming with a scepter.
- 50:57He came first as a child and he grew up to be a man.
- 51:01And he was tempted in every way, but did not sin, not even once.
- 51:05And he was nailed upon a tree and he was coronated there with
- 51:09a crown of thorns and piercing in his hands and his side in his
- 51:12feet. And he bled.
- 51:13He bled. Why did he bleed?
- 51:15Is this the King of the Jews? Yes, it is the king of the Jews
- 51:18who died for the Jewish people and died for all nations.
- 51:21What are you going to do with that?
- 51:23What are you going to do with Christ crucified?
- 51:31There's no neutrality. He's either king by willing
- 51:36submission, or he will be king. By force He will be king and you
- 51:43become a part of His Kingdom, or He'll be king and expel you from
- 51:49His Kingdom for all of eternity. The bridge from condemnation to
- 51:54acceptance is faith. Believe.
- 51:58Today, make the decision to look at the Word, to realize that it
- 52:02is true, indisputable, and to realize that He is after your
- 52:06heart, for you to have your sins washed and for you to have a
- 52:09future with Him. Lord, we thank you for Your
- 52:13word, we bless Your holy name. We ask, Oh God, that You would
- 52:17grant us the eyes to see what Your Word says on all matters.
- 52:22And we pray today that if we're going to wrestle with anything,
- 52:25let it be with what the Scriptures have said.
- 52:28And we ask, oh God, that you would cause our hearts to
- 52:31remember that you are faithful. What you have said, you have
- 52:35done, and the things that you have not done yet you will
- 52:38accomplish. Nothing will stop you.
- 52:40Nothing will halt, nothing will keep you from performing your
- 52:45faithfulness. And Lord, we give you praise and
