Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: How did I get here around my right.
- 0:13Speaker 2: To everything out? I am down for fake news.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I am twenty percent of the band, and we just
- 0:21Speaker 3: released a new album called dead Set.
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's our second album. It's our fifth release in five years.
- 0:26Speaker 3: We've done three EPs and two albums, and this one
- 0:30Speaker 3: kind of ties off the fake news legacy as to
- 0:31Speaker 3: who we.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Are, what we do, where we stand, and where we
- 0:34Speaker 2: come from.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Fantastic Darren, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Brother Blody oh Man, thanks having me, Chris my pleasure.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Those you say fake News dropped your latest album, dead Set,
- 0:43Speaker 4: on May seven, So I know it hasn't been that long, Brave,
- 0:46Speaker 4: but what's the early reception been.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Like, Yeah, look, it's been good.
- 0:50Speaker 3: It's moving at a steady pace in the streamage, and yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 3: it seems to be doing all the right things and
- 0:58Speaker 3: moving in the right direction. And then nah, it's doing
- 1:02Speaker 3: everything that it's men too, which is great, which is
- 1:04Speaker 3: a great thing.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And there's a few different songs in there which.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Might have lost a few listeners, but there's a few
- 1:10Speaker 3: different songs in there that might have gained if you
- 1:11Speaker 3: listened as well. So yeah, we've pushed the envelope. We've
- 1:16Speaker 3: stayed true to who we are and we've evolved and
- 1:19Speaker 3: we feel like we've got a very now sound with
- 1:22Speaker 3: what we've done on this album. So a lot of
- 1:24Speaker 3: these songs were written seven years ago when the band started,
- 1:28Speaker 3: and we just knew that we wanted to get them right.
- 1:29Speaker 3: We didn't have the right people for the job, so
- 1:31Speaker 3: we kind of went back and redid them and then
- 1:33Speaker 3: we're like, nah, now we know where one hundred percent
- 1:35Speaker 3: with them and some of the other riffs in there,
- 1:37Speaker 3: riffs I've had line around for like fifteen plus years,
- 1:39Speaker 3: you know, So it's nice to finally get them released,
- 1:42Speaker 3: put them behind us, and yeah, people kind of understand
- 1:45Speaker 3: how much work goes into a riff and a song sometimes,
- 1:47Speaker 3: you know, like when you hear it on release day,
- 1:50Speaker 3: it was probably recorded two or three years prior, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 3: and then by the time it comes out and stuff,
- 1:54Speaker 3: there's just a lot of work goes on behind the scene.
- 1:56Speaker 2: So nice to have it out and yeah, we're chuffed.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Nice now dive into the album deeper musically for us,
- 2:01Speaker 4: fro and tell us what you're going for the song around.
- 2:04Speaker 3: So there's a little bit of backing track action, you know.
- 2:07Speaker 3: A couple of guys said to me, yoh, you can't
- 2:09Speaker 3: have backing tracks in punk, you know. But when people
- 2:13Speaker 3: start setting rules, I just like fucking breaking them, you know.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So I was like.
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'll find a way to get these backing tracks in there,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and I did on a couple of songs.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Started out with a few sub drops here and.
- 2:23Speaker 3: There, a few reverse symbols, and shit, we're just kind
- 2:26Speaker 3: of get the ambience and the epicness of the thing
- 2:27Speaker 3: pumping up. And then I decided to go balls to
- 2:30Speaker 3: the wall on the first song by having this backing
- 2:33Speaker 3: track at the start of the song, because you know,
- 2:36Speaker 3: you probably see me with Parkway recently.
- 2:37Speaker 2: That's that's kind of where it was inspired from.
- 2:39Speaker 3: You know, the recent show they did where they were
- 2:41Speaker 3: playing to a click track the whole way through, and
- 2:43Speaker 3: these pirate techniques that go with the show and the
- 2:45Speaker 3: music and the songs and the sub drops and all
- 2:47Speaker 3: these things, And yeah, we don't essentially play to a
- 2:50Speaker 3: click track, but we can kind of play to a
- 2:52Speaker 3: backing track for a little bit to enhance an intro
- 2:54Speaker 3: or give a bridge a bit more anthemic epicness to it.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And yeah, we've kind of done that with this music,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and I feel like it's transcribed really well.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It's worked.
- 3:06Speaker 3: We've pushed the envelope with a lot of the rifts,
- 3:07Speaker 3: a lot of the riffs are a bit more heavier,
- 3:10Speaker 3: but the thing that keeps them punk is Tim's vocals,
- 3:13Speaker 3: and it keeps the fake news sound is Tim's vocals.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Kind of keeps us in the lane. We don't use
- 3:18Speaker 2: double kick. It's all single kick, and Natt does.
- 3:21Speaker 3: A real good job at like heal and towing the
- 3:23Speaker 3: shit out of his single pedal, and a lot of
- 3:25Speaker 3: the time he can tickle his times and it'll sound
- 3:27Speaker 3: like a double kick a lot of the time anyway.
- 3:29Speaker 3: So yeah, that's a bit of a weapon in that sense.
- 3:32Speaker 3: But there's no blast beats or anything like that, so
- 3:34Speaker 3: it doesn't go too metal. It stays in the lane
- 3:36Speaker 3: of punk, and it's got those few little fundamental things
- 3:39Speaker 3: that we do to stay in the lane of punk
- 3:41Speaker 3: but still evolve at the same time.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Yeah, you release the singles Southbound and hit the Ground,
- 3:47Speaker 4: So just say that's all someone's heard of the album.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Is that a good idea of what you expect overall?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Or is that just scratching us Olf.
- 3:54Speaker 3: It's one of those things when you think you've got
- 3:55Speaker 3: a pigeon holed, you know, you don't, you know, like
- 3:57Speaker 3: every song, like some of the songs, this is so
- 4:00Speaker 3: random and weird, you know, like when you think about
- 4:02Speaker 3: beer coming in at number eight, you're like, oh, that's
- 4:04Speaker 3: a bit of a weird, bit of a weird one
- 4:06Speaker 3: where it comes in where it does come in. But
- 4:08Speaker 3: at the same time, it's got a nice variety as
- 4:12Speaker 3: the album progresses and it goes through, you know, like
- 4:16Speaker 3: I was funny thay, I was watched listening to some Panterea,
- 4:18Speaker 3: Cowboys from Hell and Volga Display of Power. You look
- 4:22Speaker 3: at the first six songs on those on those albums,
- 4:26Speaker 3: they are just fucking heavy as hell, you know, like
- 4:29Speaker 3: and just they're like, they're best songs. And we've always
- 4:33Speaker 3: had how you know, some people can put the best
- 4:35Speaker 3: songs at the start, but we wanted to have this
- 4:37Speaker 3: album to have depth. So we went in and we
- 4:39Speaker 3: put all the songs for the fake News filter, and
- 4:42Speaker 3: it's all killer, no filler. But if you get to
- 4:45Speaker 3: the first three songs, it's a bit of a whirlwind,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you know, and then you get to Therapy. A lot
- 4:50Speaker 3: of people are going back and replaying Therapy. They really
- 4:52Speaker 3: love it. But then you get the track five, which
- 4:54Speaker 3: is complicated, which is a.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Bit more of an emo.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Heartfelt, you know, an extion style song, and then Face
- 5:02Speaker 3: of Death and running out of Time I just could
- 5:05Speaker 3: possibly be the best two songs on the album.
- 5:07Speaker 2: So there's high energy throughout the whole thing.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You don't know what to expect at certain times, and
- 5:15Speaker 3: it's one of those albums you might get halfway through
- 5:17Speaker 3: it and you go back and revisit it, and you
- 5:19Speaker 3: got to absorb what you first hear and go back
- 5:21Speaker 3: and revisit it again, you know, because there is there
- 5:23Speaker 3: is some weird shit in this that's a little bit
- 5:25Speaker 3: left field, and you're like, you didn't see it coming as.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Much as what you thought you would have, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: just a little bit before.
- 5:32Speaker 4: But you're the opening track Destination like it's a pearlm
- 5:35Speaker 4: I like, it starts off with a bit of a
- 5:37Speaker 4: monologue before a nice ambient piece comes in. Like it
- 5:39Speaker 4: sounds like there's a bit of string instruments there here.
- 5:41Speaker 4: I might be wrong, but yeah, yeah, it's a misleading
- 5:46Speaker 4: way to start the album. B I was listening and
- 5:48Speaker 4: I was going, what the fuck are these guys doing
- 5:50Speaker 4: on this? Right and then bang you kick in with
- 5:52Speaker 4: your sound.
- 5:53Speaker 2: But I liked it.
- 5:53Speaker 4: It was a good little different way to start it.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah, So we jumped down a time machine and we
- 5:58Speaker 3: revisited Beethoven and we went back. He said, look what
- 6:01Speaker 3: do we do here? He said, he gave us a
- 6:03Speaker 3: few tips on the synth and stuff what to do.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So jump back in the time of shot and come
- 6:06Speaker 3: back to the present. And we went and seeing the
- 6:08Speaker 3: guys at Prisone Symphony Orchestry, and they kind of orchestrated
- 6:10Speaker 3: the whole thing for us.
- 6:11Speaker 2: No, they didn't.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I've got to mate that does a lot of synth
- 6:16Speaker 3: stuff and does a lot of backing track in previous
- 6:17Speaker 3: bands that I that I played in, and he's always
- 6:21Speaker 3: got a sick idea for some backing track things. And
- 6:24Speaker 3: you know, there's a band called Escape the Day which
- 6:27Speaker 3: plays a lot of metal riffs with like uh trancy,
- 6:33Speaker 3: you know, like sandstorm stuff with like heavy metal riffs,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and it's something i've kind of you know, and Sakari
- 6:41Speaker 3: does it well in Not You're the Winner that that
- 6:45Speaker 3: song and a lot of other things that they do
- 6:46Speaker 3: and bring Me to the Horizon does a lot of
- 6:47Speaker 3: awesome backing track stuff.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And look, this is the future.
- 6:51Speaker 3: It's there to be used and it's just it's nice
- 6:55Speaker 3: when you got the high pitch of the synth with
- 6:56Speaker 3: a low tuning in D standard, they kind of and
- 7:00Speaker 3: blend together really well and live the frequencies, the frequencies
- 7:04Speaker 3: that get crushed when you upload on Spotify and iTunes,
- 7:07Speaker 3: all those frequencies are still there when you play the
- 7:10Speaker 3: songs live and you play them through a massive pa like.
- 7:14Speaker 2: That song Rewind remixed.
- 7:16Speaker 3: That's a remix that my mate did with the same
- 7:20Speaker 3: sort of synth plugins and stuff that he's got and.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Re emulated Rewind.
- 7:26Speaker 3: But we played that as like a little guitar interlude
- 7:29Speaker 3: in Melbourne at picker Pick, a venue which is fits
- 7:34Speaker 3: five thousand people. It's got this old corrugated roof shed
- 7:39Speaker 3: and that just fucking blew the roof off the joint,
- 7:42Speaker 3: you know. And the frequencies that are in all those
- 7:44Speaker 3: sounds and all those and all those big synths and stuff,
- 7:48Speaker 3: they're frequencies that you don't get when you listen to
- 7:50Speaker 3: on Spotify.
- 7:51Speaker 2: You don't get that when you listen to iTunes and stuff.
- 7:53Speaker 3: So if you want to see frequency, if you want
- 7:55Speaker 3: to see the fake newsic experience.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You have to come to a live show.
- 7:59Speaker 4: It's it. You've also thrown in the cover of John
- 8:03Speaker 4: Boggety's Fortunate Son there bro like, why she's that particular
- 8:06Speaker 4: song to give the fake news treatment.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Well, there's no there's no sort of real premise behind it.
- 8:12Speaker 3: That's just kind of we just we just pump out songs.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I just keep pumping them out. We throw a shit
- 8:18Speaker 3: on the wall and see what sticks, you know. And
- 8:20Speaker 3: that's a song that we did a while ago. We
- 8:21Speaker 3: were going to release it as a single and same
- 8:24Speaker 3: as rewind Remix, We're going to release it as a single.
- 8:26Speaker 3: But the song just kept coming, just kept coming, and
- 8:28Speaker 3: I was like, well, this can go on the album.
- 8:30Speaker 3: That can go on the album, and this will work
- 8:33Speaker 3: on the album. We've got to have a cover. Yeah,
- 8:35Speaker 3: Fortunate Sons just a cover. We've had line around for
- 8:38Speaker 3: maybe three or four years, and we're like, well, sounds.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Good, you know.
- 8:41Speaker 3: We were just like, I reckon it's got a place
- 8:43Speaker 3: on the album somewhere.
- 8:44Speaker 2: So we so we slapped it on there and there's
- 8:46Speaker 2: no sign of there's.
- 8:47Speaker 3: No real meaning behind it with it being about Vietnam
- 8:51Speaker 3: or anything like that or America or whatever. It's just
- 8:54Speaker 3: it's just a fun song to play and it's a
- 8:56Speaker 3: fun song to sing along to, and same as Eve Destruction,
- 8:59Speaker 3: but like even Distructing kind of came in this really
- 9:03Speaker 3: weird thing, you know, with what it's about and what
- 9:05Speaker 3: was going on in the world at the time and
- 9:07Speaker 3: stuff as well, and it just suited.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And it wasn't even meant to be that way.
- 9:10Speaker 3: It was just something that we just did. It sounded
- 9:12Speaker 3: awesome and we're like, fuck it, let's let's let's just
- 9:15Speaker 3: use this.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So we did well.
- 9:18Speaker 4: People like myself ro like, what's the process, Like when
- 9:21Speaker 4: you break down a song like that, Like you've got
- 9:23Speaker 4: their version of the song, and then you're trying to
- 9:24Speaker 4: make it your own, Like what, what's what's the process.
- 9:27Speaker 2: To get it from A to B?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Well, I feel like the secret lies within the drums.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I feel like you need to make the vocals to match.
- 9:37Speaker 3: The drums and then that becomes your foundation and then
- 9:40Speaker 3: you build from there. So it's all about which sections
- 9:44Speaker 3: you want to have half time and which sections you
- 9:46Speaker 3: want to have full time.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Balls to the wall and.
- 9:48Speaker 3: That's that's really good with stuff like that, And I
- 9:51Speaker 3: know the things that he likes to do, and I
- 9:52Speaker 3: kind of know his style and mean him kind of
- 9:54Speaker 3: working with each other, and I like, I was thinking
- 9:57Speaker 3: halftime snare drop here he might be yeah, yeah, no,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I'm feeling it, you know, and then we'll go from
- 10:01Speaker 3: there and we'll build that foundation and then you're just
- 10:04Speaker 3: kind of dressing it up from there. But for example, yeah, yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 3: it's like that, Well, Fortunate Son's been a song I've
- 10:13Speaker 3: been playing for a long time, especially that like version.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Everyone's done a version of it, you know, so whatever,
- 10:18Speaker 2: all good.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But in terms of the one with like Eve of Destruction,
- 10:23Speaker 3: just to give another example, he the guy that sings
- 10:27Speaker 3: that song, he adds a line onto every verse one, two,
- 10:30Speaker 3: three is like four verses. So the first one goes
- 10:33Speaker 3: for like four lines, and next one's five lines, next
- 10:36Speaker 3: versus six lines, next one's like seven lines. So there's
- 10:39Speaker 3: this drum, this drum extension bar thing that you have
- 10:41Speaker 3: to add on. It's all done in like the drums
- 10:43Speaker 3: and the bars and stuff. So yeah, drums kind of
- 10:47Speaker 3: sets up for the kill. Lucky We've got a balltair
- 10:50Speaker 3: and drummer in that. And when he fucking smacks the weds,
- 10:53Speaker 3: he lets him know. He hits them like a redited stepchild.
- 10:56Speaker 3: So yeah, he's on.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I know this be the same for every song, bro,
- 11:01Speaker 4: but probam musicians point of view, it is it easier
- 11:03Speaker 4: to rewrite someone else's song or to come up with
- 11:06Speaker 4: your own original.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It's probably easy to come up with your own original. Man,
- 11:11Speaker 3: I wish stuck or play covers. Maybe then maybe i'd
- 11:13Speaker 3: have some money. But like covers is, covers is the
- 11:17Speaker 3: fun thing to do to get your head around recording
- 11:21Speaker 3: at home and shit sometimes you know, like, yeah, writing's great.
- 11:24Speaker 3: You can make it up yourself and you can no
- 11:26Speaker 3: one can tell you that you played it wrong because
- 11:28Speaker 3: you made it up, So I.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Think that's all good. Yeah, it's kind of it's a
- 11:33Speaker 2: double edged stort. Either way.
- 11:34Speaker 3: You still want to You can still provide your own
- 11:37Speaker 3: fake new sound to like a cover or something. There's
- 11:40Speaker 3: just this filter that goes through you and it just
- 11:42Speaker 3: kind of you spit it out the other end, and yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 3: it's easy enough.
- 11:45Speaker 2: You the covers. The covers are great to have, man,
- 11:47Speaker 2: you kind of got to have them.
- 11:48Speaker 3: And even when we played with Millon Colin Pennywise, they
- 11:52Speaker 3: both had to cover each that they would play you know. Yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 3: every every band's got to got to covers now.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Earlier this year Fake News sided with international label Thousand
- 12:01Speaker 4: Island Records, Mate, so what sorts of things that opened
- 12:04Speaker 4: up four years of band.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It's opened up the prospect of going overseas.
- 12:10Speaker 3: It's opened up the prospect of doing vinyl because we
- 12:12Speaker 3: wanted to do vinyl earlier.
- 12:14Speaker 2: But it's just a big hit in the hip pocket.
- 12:17Speaker 3: You know, you've got to come up with four grand
- 12:19Speaker 3: to get two hundred copies made, whereas we kind of
- 12:23Speaker 3: got a bit of help from them in order to
- 12:25Speaker 3: do that.
- 12:25Speaker 2: So yeah, they're.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Doing the American North American distribution and Double Helicks are
- 12:32Speaker 3: doing the UK distribution, and we're taking care of the
- 12:35Speaker 3: Australian stuff. So but yeah, we've been in chats with
- 12:38Speaker 3: one thousand All Records for the last two or three releases,
- 12:41Speaker 3: and we knew they were very interested. And Bruno's a
- 12:45Speaker 3: legend and Vince.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Who used to play who now plays in these days.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But yeah, there are awesome lads man, and they're our
- 12:53Speaker 2: sick label.
- 12:54Speaker 3: They've got so many awesome bands Bring me the Storm.
- 12:59Speaker 3: They've got so many sick bands that we listened to often.
- 13:02Speaker 2: The bridge of Gap. They're kind of in cahoots with
- 13:05Speaker 2: Pete with Pete from Pea Records. Ye. So yeah, they'll
- 13:09Speaker 2: just give us like this overseas.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Reach and yeah, we're so tough to be a part
- 13:14Speaker 3: of their their crew because.
- 13:17Speaker 2: They are the best we could have gotten with out
- 13:22Speaker 2: going past our limits kind of thing, if that makes sense. Yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Now you've got a launch show coming up at Sobar
- 13:27Speaker 4: on May the thirty first as well with Judo Chop,
- 13:30Speaker 4: Get Heat and Okay thirty six.
- 13:31Speaker 2: So what cotton store for us? Said mate, Well, it's
- 13:36Speaker 2: just the fake news experience. Man.
- 13:38Speaker 3: You gotta you just got to see this ship live
- 13:40Speaker 3: to really to really understand it.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Yeah, so Bar is going to be one hell of
- 13:45Speaker 2: a show.
- 13:47Speaker 3: As far as this back half of the year ages,
- 13:48Speaker 3: I can't really say too much just yet.
- 13:50Speaker 2: We've got a few things in the works that we're
- 13:53Speaker 2: working on.
- 13:54Speaker 3: We're looking at maybe doing a tour exchange program with
- 13:58Speaker 3: the band overseas. We'll kind of bring them over here
- 14:01Speaker 3: and then we'll probably maybe go over there and we'll
- 14:05Speaker 3: kind of do a little exchange in that way. But
- 14:07Speaker 3: we've got things we're working on. We're just kind of
- 14:09Speaker 3: leaving ourselves open. Getting this album out into the world
- 14:13Speaker 3: has been our main concern, and now that that's done,
- 14:17Speaker 3: we'll just kind of batten down the hatches, won't spread
- 14:20Speaker 3: ourselves too thin and won't burn ourselves out.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And we'll just kind of understand that.
- 14:24Speaker 3: You know, life is family, and life is living, and
- 14:26Speaker 3: life is being healthy, music is and everything. So we'll
- 14:29Speaker 3: kind of won and take your foot off the gas.
- 14:31Speaker 3: We'll still be burning away with things. We're just kind
- 14:33Speaker 3: of waiting for the right thing to come. But our
- 14:36Speaker 3: main focus now would possibly be another restrained tour with
- 14:40Speaker 3: a big band if we can, and possibly get overseas
