- 0:06Speaker 1: thou the Son of Man with a kiss? Luke 22.48
- 0:13Speaker 1: As I march toward the place of my purpose and destiny,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and as the pressure of the task before me begins
- 0:21Speaker 1: to weigh on my heart, I thank you that you
- 0:24Speaker 1: will place people around me who will pray and who
- 0:28Speaker 1: will intercede on my behalf. so that I may have
- 0:32Speaker 1: the strength to finish strong. Increase my faith so that
- 0:38Speaker 1: I will be able to operate in the fullness of
- 0:41Speaker 1: who I am. Even when I experience betrayal from friends
- 0:46Speaker 1: like Judas, I will remain calm, because even though it
- 0:50Speaker 1: may surprise me, I know it doesn't surprise you, Lord.
- 0:55Speaker 1: When I'm tempted to lash out and fight back like Peter,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Restrain me, Holy Spirit, and remind me that your spoken
- 1:04Speaker 1: word over my life will be fulfilled, no matter who
- 1:09Speaker 1: turns their back on me. No amount of betrayal will
- 1:13Speaker 1: ever be able to derail my destiny, because through my
- 1:18Speaker 1: obedience I am protected and covered. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 1:33Speaker 1: an incredible Bible story. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com The
- 1:45Speaker 1: Word will be fulfilled.
- 1:47Speaker 2: In our last story, we learned about the plot to
- 1:50Speaker 2: kill Jesus being set into motion by Judas. Jesus, during
- 1:55Speaker 2: the Last Supper, identified his betrayer as Judas. He washed
- 1:59Speaker 2: his disciples' feet, telling them to serve one another as
- 2:03Speaker 2: he had served them, and gave them a new command
- 2:06Speaker 2: to remember him when they eat together and take communion
- 2:09Speaker 2: until he returns. In this story, we will learn about
- 2:14Speaker 2: the agonizing heart of Jesus, his resolve to save us,
- 2:17Speaker 2: and his desire to have his disciples near him in
- 2:20Speaker 2: the last hour. We also see Judas again, coming with
- 2:24Speaker 2: a small army to arrest Jesus. as inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:35Speaker 3: in a Year. Thank you for joining us. In our
- 2:38Speaker 3: last time together, we heard of the Passover meal in
- 2:41Speaker 3: which Jesus washed his disciples' feet, giving them and us
- 2:45Speaker 3: a model of servanthood. He also identified his betrayer, Judas Iscariot, who,
- 2:52Speaker 3: filled with Satan, departed from the group to do this
- 2:55Speaker 3: terrible thing of giving Jesus up for sacrifice. Finally, we
- 3:00Speaker 3: heard how Jesus gave new meaning to the elements of
- 3:02Speaker 3: the Passover meal. This Passover meal transitions to the Last
- 3:07Speaker 3: Supper and the Lord's Supper that we practice today as
- 3:10Speaker 3: Christians because the blood of Jesus Christ is represented in
- 3:16Speaker 3: the fruit of the vine in the cup and the
- 3:18Speaker 3: bread represents the body of the Lord which was given
- 3:21Speaker 3: and is given for us. Today we'll find Jesus filled
- 3:25Speaker 3: with sorrow going to the Father in prayer because he
- 3:28Speaker 3: knows his time is nearing, and then he submits his
- 3:31Speaker 3: will to do the will of God. While he desires
- 3:35Speaker 3: to be spared from the great suffering of taking the
- 3:37Speaker 3: sin of the world upon himself, he prays, not my will,
- 3:41Speaker 3: but your will be done. The cross of Christ looms
- 3:45Speaker 3: large as we begin today's reading, so let's listen reverently
- 3:50Speaker 3: to the Word of God.
- 3:54Speaker 2: In the cool of the night, Jesus could hear the
- 3:56Speaker 2: faint sound of the festival happening in the distance. Quietness
- 4:01Speaker 2: settled in as the disciples walked further away from the
- 4:04Speaker 2: city up to the Mount of Olives. Among the trees,
- 4:08Speaker 2: with his disciples trailing shortly behind him, Jesus spoke, You
- 4:13Speaker 2: will all run away because of me tonight, for it
- 4:16Speaker 2: is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
- 4:19Speaker 2: of the flock will be scattered. Peter, with the same
- 4:23Speaker 2: brash and bold tone he often used, said, They may
- 4:27Speaker 2: all fall away, Lord, but I will not. I would
- 4:30Speaker 2: die for you. Oh, Peter, if only you knew what
- 4:34Speaker 2: was going to happen, Jesus must have thought. He answered
- 4:38Speaker 2: Peter and said, Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you
- 4:43Speaker 2: would have already denied knowing me three times. Peter and
- 4:47Speaker 2: the others continued to affirm to Jesus that they would
- 4:51Speaker 2: never do such a thing Yet Jesus would go through
- 4:54Speaker 2: what was about to happen alone. He would gladly do
- 4:58Speaker 2: it too, for the joy set before him, he would
- 5:01Speaker 2: endure it all for their sake and for the sake
- 5:05Speaker 2: of the world. Jesus led them to a garden called Gethsemane.
- 5:10Speaker 2: There Jesus would anguish over what was about to happen.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He told his disciples to wait for him while he prayed.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Then he took Peter, James, and John to go further
- 5:20Speaker 2: with him. My soul is filled with sorrow even to death.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Remain here with me and keep watch. Jesus walked ahead
- 5:29Speaker 2: a little further and fell to his knees before God.
- 5:32Speaker 2: No one could truly know the depth of Jesus' dialogue
- 5:36Speaker 2: with God that night. The Father and the Son spoke
- 5:39Speaker 2: to each other with a bond that had preceded time itself.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Jesus knew that he was going to be taken, and
- 5:46Speaker 2: he would be offered up as a sacrifice for the
- 5:48Speaker 2: redemption of mankind. Gazing into heaven, Jesus knelt before his
- 5:53Speaker 2: God and asked, Father, if you are willing, take this
- 5:57Speaker 2: cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.
- 6:03Speaker 2: It was not just the cross Jesus was speaking of,
- 6:06Speaker 2: but also the cup of wrath he would endure so
- 6:08Speaker 2: the world wouldn't have to. This led Jesus to sweat blood.
- 6:13Speaker 2: In anguish he prayed, yet God sent him comfort in
- 6:17Speaker 2: the form of an angel. The cup would not be
- 6:21Speaker 2: taken away. Jesus returned afterwards to find his disciples sleeping.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may
- 6:30Speaker 2: not enter into temptation. For Jesus knew that the events
- 6:34Speaker 2: about to unfold would require them to have faith. Jesus
- 6:39Speaker 2: and the disciples heard sounds of several men in the
- 6:41Speaker 2: distance carrying weapons, torches, and armor. Jesus did not wait
- 6:47Speaker 2: for them to come to him. Instead, he crossed the
- 6:49Speaker 2: brook and walked towards them. There he met Judas. Judas
- 6:54Speaker 2: ran to Jesus and embraced him. Greetings, Rabbi, Judas said.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Then he kissed him. Jesus saw Judas as he truly
- 7:03Speaker 2: was and said, Judas, would you betray the Son of
- 7:07Speaker 2: Man with a kiss? After this, the armed men surrounded
- 7:11Speaker 2: Jesus with swords drawn and torches blazing. Looking at their
- 7:15Speaker 2: faces illuminated by the flames, Jesus asked, Whom do you seek?
- 7:20Speaker 2: Jesus of Nazareth, they responded, quite sure of who they
- 7:24Speaker 2: were speaking to. Jesus, the maker of heaven and earth
- 7:28Speaker 2: and the conquering Lion of Judah, stood before his pursuers.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He spoke with the voice of God, saying, I am he.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And in that instant, the dozens of armed soldiers fell
- 7:41Speaker 2: onto their backs, whiplashed by the power of Christ himself. Again,
- 7:47Speaker 2: Facing the soldiers, Jesus asked, Whom do you seek? Regaining
- 7:52Speaker 2: their footing, now less sure of who they were speaking to,
- 7:56Speaker 2: answered again, saying, Jesus of Nazareth, the Lord told them,
- 8:02Speaker 2: I have told you that I was the one you
- 8:04Speaker 2: were looking for, so let these other men go. Therefore Jesus' words, saying,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I have not lost any of the men you gave me,
- 8:13Speaker 2: was fulfilled. The disciples, amazed, confused, and afraid, asked if
- 8:19Speaker 2: they should come to Jesus' defense. Peter, without asking, sprang
- 8:23Speaker 2: into action. He drew his sword and ran towards the
- 8:25Speaker 2: men with righteous anger in his voice. Aiming for the
- 8:28Speaker 2: head of a servant nearby, he cut off his ear,
- 8:31Speaker 2: sending him screaming onto the floor. With blood spewing from
- 8:35Speaker 2: the servant's ear, Jesus raised his voice yet again. Put
- 8:38Speaker 2: your sword back into its place, Peter. For those who
- 8:42Speaker 2: live by the sword will die by the sword. Again,
- 8:46Speaker 2: he looked at Peter with intensity and honesty. Do you
- 8:51Speaker 2: think that I cannot ask my father to send more
- 8:54Speaker 2: than twelve legions of angels to save me? But how
- 8:57Speaker 2: then will I fulfill the scriptures? Jesus then looked at
- 9:01Speaker 2: the armed men and the priests behind them. Do you
- 9:05Speaker 2: come to me with swords and clubs like you would
- 9:07Speaker 2: a criminal? Why did you not come to seize me
- 9:10Speaker 2: while I was teaching in the temple? Jesus knew why.
- 9:14Speaker 2: They knew what they were doing was an act to
- 9:17Speaker 2: happen in the shadows. Jesus then knelt down to the
- 9:21Speaker 2: servant writhing on the floor. His name was Malchus. Jesus
- 9:26Speaker 2: touched Malchus and healed him before everyone. The men then
- 9:30Speaker 2: took Jesus and arrested him. The disciples, unsure what to
- 9:34Speaker 2: do and afraid, ran in different directions. Outwardly it would
- 9:39Speaker 2: have seemed as if Jesus was being taken forcibly to
- 9:42Speaker 2: the temple. Yet Jesus went willingly. With intent and love
- 9:46Speaker 2: for all mankind, he began the process of offering up
- 9:50Speaker 2: his own life. Bound and tied, yet not trapped, Jesus
- 9:54Speaker 2: was brought to the temple of the high priest Caiaphas,
- 9:58Speaker 2: where hundreds of people had gathered to accuse him.
- 10:07Speaker 3: We open today's reading with Jesus and Peter in conversation.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Jesus knew that what was to come would strike fear
- 10:13Speaker 3: into his followers and they would run in fear and terror. Peter,
- 10:19Speaker 3: strong-willed and hard-headed as ever, insisted that, though others may leave,
- 10:23Speaker 3: that he would never abandon Jesus. You can count on me, Jesus,
- 10:28Speaker 3: said Peter. Jesus told Peter that, before the next morning,
- 10:32Speaker 3: he would deny him not once but three times. Peter
- 10:36Speaker 3: and the others insisted that they would never leave, but
- 10:39Speaker 3: Jesus knew what was coming. It would be a lonely
- 10:42Speaker 3: night of pain and suffering. Then Jesus took the disciples
- 10:46Speaker 3: to a garden. the Garden of Gethsemane, to pray. He
- 10:51Speaker 3: told them to stay and wait for him. Then he
- 10:53Speaker 3: took three of his closest disciples a little ways away.
- 10:57Speaker 3: With Peter, James, and John within earshot, Jesus began to
- 11:01Speaker 3: pour out his heart to God. This was going to
- 11:04Speaker 3: be excruciating. So, if there was any other way, Jesus
- 11:10Speaker 3: asked the Father to release him and somehow take away
- 11:13Speaker 3: the cup of suffering. And yet, in the midst of that,
- 11:18Speaker 3: Christ committed himself to do the will of the Father.
- 11:22Speaker 3: And when he asked for the cup to be taken
- 11:24Speaker 3: away from him, that cup which represents the dregs of
- 11:27Speaker 3: sin of all the world, what was in that cup
- 11:30Speaker 3: was the sin of every person who ever lived. This
- 11:33Speaker 3: is why Jesus turned away from drinking the cup. And
- 11:36Speaker 3: yet he said, not my will, Father, but your will
- 11:39Speaker 3: be done. This surrender would prepare him for the sacrifice
- 11:44Speaker 3: that he would give for the whole world. to all
- 11:46Speaker 3: who would believe in him. It's impossible for us to
- 11:50Speaker 3: imagine the depth of pain that Jesus would be feeling,
- 11:54Speaker 3: experiencing that night. He was about to endure death, but
- 11:57Speaker 3: not just physical death. He was to experience spiritual death
- 12:01Speaker 3: when he would die on the cross, the sin bearer,
- 12:04Speaker 3: and giving up his life and experiencing the wrath of
- 12:09Speaker 3: a holy God. His anguish was so deep that Jesus
- 12:13Speaker 3: began to sweat like drops of blood. This was not
- 12:17Speaker 3: figurative language. And we know that some individuals, when under
- 12:21Speaker 3: extreme stress, can actually sweat blood. That's how broken and
- 12:26Speaker 3: troubled our Lord was. And yet he was willing for
- 12:28Speaker 3: you and me to endure the excruciating pain, the spiritual
- 12:32Speaker 3: pain of what was yet to come. Though the father
- 12:36Speaker 3: did not take the cup away, he did not leave
- 12:38Speaker 3: his son without comfort. In Luke 22, verse 43, we
- 12:41Speaker 3: read this. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven,
- 12:46Speaker 3: strengthening him. In our own lives, there are times when
- 12:51Speaker 3: we pray, God, take away this cup, take away this hurt,
- 12:55Speaker 3: take away this pain, and yet the pain remains. But
- 12:58Speaker 3: God promises us that he will always be there for
- 13:01Speaker 3: us to comfort us and strengthen us as we walk
- 13:04Speaker 3: with him. He may send angels. His comfort, the comfort
- 13:09Speaker 3: of the Holy Spirit is there with us. We can
- 13:11Speaker 3: know that he never leaves us or forsakes us. Just
- 13:15Speaker 3: as he took care of his darling son Jesus, he
- 13:17Speaker 3: will take care of us in Christ. Jesus then rose
- 13:21Speaker 3: and found his disciples sleeping. He awakened them and told
- 13:25Speaker 3: them to pray that they would not fall into temptation.
- 13:28Speaker 3: And though they would not face the same challenges and
- 13:31Speaker 3: suffering as Jesus, this night was not going to be
- 13:34Speaker 3: easy for them either. Even as our Lord prepared to
- 13:37Speaker 3: go to the cross, he ministered to those in his care.
- 13:42Speaker 3: While they were still in the garden, Judas arrived along
- 13:45Speaker 3: with Roman soldiers and religious leaders who had come to
- 13:49Speaker 3: seize Jesus. Judas approached Jesus and kissed his cheek, signaling
- 13:54Speaker 3: to the soldiers that this was their man. And in effect,
- 13:59Speaker 3: Judas kissed life goodbye. He kissed Jesus, who is the
- 14:03Speaker 3: way of the truth and the life, but he also
- 14:05Speaker 3: kissed his own life goodbye and sealed and settled his fate.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Jesus spoke calmly and gently to the soldiers, asking who
- 14:13Speaker 3: they were seeking. He responded, I am he. That's a
- 14:18Speaker 3: powerful statement. It was an I am statement. And when
- 14:22Speaker 3: he made it, some were taken off their feet and
- 14:25Speaker 3: thrown to the ground. Even in these moments, the words
- 14:29Speaker 3: of Christ were filled with power and strength. Peter again
- 14:33Speaker 3: acts brashly. He grabs a sword and managed to cut
- 14:36Speaker 3: off the ear of Malchus, servant of one of the
- 14:38Speaker 3: high priests. Jesus then rebuked Peter and then touched the man,
- 14:42Speaker 3: healing his ear. If anyone still expected Jesus to rise
- 14:46Speaker 3: up as a conquering king to overthrow the government, all
- 14:49Speaker 3: hope was lost at this point as he silently surrendered
- 14:52Speaker 3: to the will of the Father and went with the
- 14:55Speaker 3: accusers to drink the cup that the Father had given him. Indeed,
- 15:00Speaker 3: it looked like all hope was lost, but God was
- 15:03Speaker 3: about to bring the greatest hope to all the world. Jesus,
- 15:07Speaker 3: how we thank you that you surrendered your will to
- 15:09Speaker 3: the will of the Father, that you gave your life
- 15:12Speaker 3: to fulfill your purpose and plan on earth, and that
- 15:15Speaker 3: is to die on the cross for our sins. Thank
- 15:18Speaker 3: you for this good news of salvation, that if we
- 15:21Speaker 3: put our faith and trust in you by repenting of
- 15:24Speaker 3: our sins and receiving you as Lord and Savior, that
- 15:27Speaker 3: all of our sins can be forgiven, that you will
- 15:29Speaker 3: live in us, and that we will live with you
- 15:31Speaker 3: forever in heaven. We thank you for the hope that
- 15:34Speaker 3: you have provided for us at the cross. and in
- 15:37Speaker 3: the power of your resurrection. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank
