- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The provincial government is injecting an extra $ 8. 2
- 0:10Speaker 2: million into the Medical Transportation Assistance Program. It says the
- 0:15Speaker 2: expanded program now includes 100% coverage for eligible patients who
- 0:20Speaker 2: have to travel outside their area for a specialist appointment.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Several other changes were also announced, including an updated vehicle
- 0:28Speaker 2: mileage rate, a reduced distance requirement for dialysis patients, and
- 0:33Speaker 2: a new online application portal. Labrador Affairs Minister Leila Evans
- 0:38Speaker 2: notes the previous system left many patients on the hook
- 0:41Speaker 2: for extra out-of-pocket costs.
- 0:44Speaker 3: And the coverage was, you know, I think it was
- 0:47Speaker 3: 55 to 80 percent coverage. So a lot of times
- 0:50Speaker 3: when people submitted their receipts, they weren't getting all their
- 0:54Speaker 3: expenses back. And now those eligible expenses will be 100%.
- 1:00Speaker 3: So the patients will not be having to pay to
- 1:03Speaker 3: travel outside the region to access care.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Health Minister Jody Wall made the announcement yesterday, bringing the
- 1:09Speaker 2: total annual budget for the program to just over $ 14 million.
- 1:14Speaker 2: There's a pretty decent drop in the price of gasoline
- 1:17Speaker 2: this morning. Gas is down 7.3 cents. Diesel on the
- 1:21Speaker 2: island is down by 2 cents but increases by 3
- 1:25Speaker 2: cents in Labrador West. Furnace oil decreases by about a
- 1:29Speaker 2: cent and a half. Stove oil is up by 4
- 1:33Speaker 2: cents per liter. RCMP are warning about the dangers of
- 1:37Speaker 2: distracted driving by sharing an image of a vehicle stopped
- 1:40Speaker 2: on the province's west coast earlier this year. The driver's
- 1:44Speaker 2: view was largely obscured by a satellite Wi-Fi receiver stuck
- 1:48Speaker 2: to the windshield with suction cups. RCMP say in addition
- 1:52Speaker 2: to being unsafe, it can also earn you a ticket
- 1:55Speaker 2: under the Highway Traffic Act. A 34-year-old man on an
- 1:59Speaker 2: electric dirt bike has been charged not only with fleeing
- 2:03Speaker 2: from police in Cornerbrook, but tackling officers when they tried
- 2:06Speaker 2: to corral him. Police say when they tried to pull
- 2:09Speaker 2: the machine over that night, it sped away. However, the
- 2:12Speaker 2: RNC later located the driver on a dead-end street off
- 2:16Speaker 2: Valley Road, arresting him after a brief struggle. Michael Green
- 2:20Speaker 2: of Halfway Point is charged with impaired driving, flight from police,
- 2:24Speaker 2: assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, and resisting arrest. He
- 2:28Speaker 2: was held in custody pending a court appearance.
- 2:32Speaker 3: U.S.
- 2:32Speaker 2: President Donald Trump is predicting that Canada will come to
- 2:36Speaker 2: Washington seeking an end to the trade war in the
- 2:39Speaker 2: next few weeks. Trump made the comments to reporters in
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Oval Office yesterday, reiterating claims that Canada is the
- 2:46Speaker 2: worst country to deal with and that Ottawa is cheating
- 2:49Speaker 2: the United States. An import ban on certain Canadian goods,
- 2:53Speaker 2: including alcohol, dairy byproducts and molasses, comes into effect today.
- 2:58Speaker 1: They're going to come in and they're going to say, sir,
- 3:01Speaker 1: we are sorry. They've treated the United States very, very badly.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I think a deal will be made, but it's got
- 3:09Speaker 1: to be a fair deal.
- 3:10Speaker 2: The province's privacy commissioner is stressing how easy the access
- 3:14Speaker 2: to information process can be on this Right to Know Week.
- 3:18Speaker 2: This is a time set aside to promote the rights
- 3:21Speaker 2: people have under AATIP legislation. Carrie Hatfield says there's lots
- 3:25Speaker 2: of information online that outlines what people can ask for
- 3:28Speaker 2: and how to go about it.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Original access requests, of course, go to the public body
- 3:33Speaker 4: that you want the information from. And most of those
- 3:36Speaker 4: now have a lot of online information to guide you
- 3:39Speaker 4: through that process. And then hopefully you receive your records
- 3:43Speaker 4: and it's done in a timely way. But if you
- 3:45Speaker 4: have questions or concerns about documents that are released to
- 3:48Speaker 4: you or exceptions that the public body applied, that's where
- 3:52Speaker 4: my office comes in. You can make a complaint to
- 3:54Speaker 4: the office and we'll kind of be that second check
- 3:57Speaker 4: to make sure that you received all the records that
- 3:59Speaker 4: you should have and that redactions were appropriately applied.
- 4:02Speaker 2: PEI's health authority says someone has gained unauthorized access to
- 4:07Speaker 2: a file containing personal information belonging to as many as 234,000 people.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The cybersecurity incident was reported September 7th and involves a
- 4:18Speaker 2: company providing services to Health PEI. It says the file
- 4:22Speaker 2: was created in 2011 and contained names, birthdays, personal health
- 4:27Speaker 2: numbers and and details about Medicare eligibility. Those affected had
- 4:31Speaker 2: a PEI health card during or before 2011 or were
- 4:35Speaker 2: non-residents who received health services on the island between 2008
- 4:38Speaker 2: and 2011. Hockey Night in Canada will continue on CBC
- 4:44Speaker 2: this season through a new partnership with the Professional Women's
- 4:47Speaker 2: Hockey League after the broadcaster's NHL agreement ended. The first
- 4:52Speaker 2: women's game under the iconic Saturday Night brand will feature
- 4:56Speaker 2: the Montreal Victoire and expansion Hamilton team on December 5th.
- 5:00Speaker 2: CBC plans eight primetime PWHL broadcasts with pre- and post-game analysis,
- 5:06Speaker 2: while Radio Canada will carry all Victoire games on radio.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
