- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Most remote workers mistake digital nomad visas for tax-free, guilt-free arrangements.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: This couldn't be farther from the truth.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Stay long enough on a remote work permit, a new trip into accidental tax residency and potential double taxation.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Your foreign salary, once taxed only in your home country, suddenly has a second tax bill attached.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: But these 15 nomad visas sidestep that trap through one of four mechanisms.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: IMI has done the research of separating the ones that keep your income tax free from the ones that only look like it.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Now, let's start with the 183-day rule that you may already know.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Most tax authorities use one test to decide whether you owe them money.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Did you spend 183 days or more in the country during the tax year or in the last 365 days?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Cross that line and you're typically a tax resident.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Your worldwide income becomes fair game to the local revenue service.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Standard digital nomad visas don't typically exempt you from this rule.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: The permit lets you live there legally.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: It does not exempt you from residency-based taxation.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: This first group of countries with digital nomad visa programs don't levy personal income tax at all.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Whether you become a tax resident there is irrelevant because no individual is taxed on employment income regardless of how long they stay.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The UAE virtual working program is one of the most popular in this category.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Applicants need a minimum monthly salary of$3,500, proof of an employment contract, and private health insurance.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: The UAE imposes no federal or emirate level personal income tax on salaries, dividends, capital gains, or investment income.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And these on the ground experts confirm there are no plans to introduce one.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Founding inclusion is permitted.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: The Caribbean Island of Anguilla operates a work remotely program that grants a one-year permit for a$2,000 application fee plus dependent fees.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Anguilla levies no income, capital gains, inheritance, or corporate tax outside specific banking and insurance sectors, and it takes just one or two weeks to get approval.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: The visa doesn't renew, but Anguila also has a separate high-value resident track for applicants who want formal tax residency through a$75,000 annual lump sum payment.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Fellow Caribbean Island, Antigua and Babuda, also offers a NOMAD digital residence in a unique format.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: The visa runs two years, but on a lifetime basis, meaning applicants cannot apply a second time once the permit expires.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Required annual income is$50,000.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: The country eliminated its personal income tax in April 2016.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So residents and non-residents alike pay zero on local or foreign personal income tax.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: The next six programs are in countries that would otherwise tax your resident income, but the visa legislation explicitly carves out foreign source remote work earnings.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Croatia's Digital Nomad Visa, introduced in January 2021, grants a statutory exemption on foreign source income for the duration of the permit under Article 9, 1, 26 of the Croatian Personal Income Tax Act.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: A 2025 amendment extended the maximum stay from 12 to 18 months as long as you can prove the minimum monthly income of about€3,750, calculated as 2.5 times Croatia's average net salary.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You're in.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Just don't earn Croatian source income during your stay.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Costa Rica's digital nomad law, known formally as Law 10008, exempts visa holders from local income tax on foreign source earnings.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: The law also waives import duties on personal computers and work equipment and authorizes holders to open Costa Rican bank accounts and use their home country's driver's licenses.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: The income threshold starts at$3,000 monthly, rising to$4,000 if applying with dependence.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: It runs one year and is renewable for a second year.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: The Barbados Welcome Stamp, created by the Remote Employment Act of 2020, is one of the clearest purpose-built tax carve acts in the Caribbean.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Welcome stamp holders are treated as non-residents for income tax purposes, regardless of how long they stay, which prevents the 183-day rule from activating.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: The portal lists a$50,000 income threshold, though the underlying Act references$100,000.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: So confirm the current operational figure with the Barbados authorities at application time.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Fees are$2,000 for a single applicant and$3,000 for a family.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Just like in Croatia, local employment or income voids the tax exemption entirely.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Dominica's Work in Nature visa runs 18 months and is not renewable.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: The program's official site lists a formal income tax waiver for foreign source earnings.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And the fee page confirms that capital gains and dividend taxes also don't apply.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Minimum income is$50,000 per year.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Dominica otherwise taxes residents on worldwide income at rates up to 35%.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: So the waiver is what keeps remote workers outside that net.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Montserrat's remote workers stamp is the highest threshold Caribbean option on this list.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Visa holders aren't liable for Montserrat income tax during the stay, though the minimum annual income is$70,000.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Montserrat has fewer than 6,000 residents, and broadband tops out around 20 megabits in much of the island.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Montserrat is one of the lesser-known lowest density Caribbean nomad options available.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Curacao's at home in Curacao program runs six months, renewable once for a combined 12-month stay.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Visa holders aren't classified as Curacao tax residents during the permit period and aren't subject to local income tax on foreign earnings, provided they avoid local employment.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: No minimum income requirement applies, although applicants need proof of funds, health insurance, and remote work arrangements with foreign entities, the usual.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: These programs' rules are moving targets.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Countries tighten, loosen, and replace these exemptions with no warning.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: If you want to know the moment a program changes its thresholds, adds new requirements, or closes entirely, subscribe to the IMI Daily Newsletter on the website.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: We don't miss a thing.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: The next five countries tax only locally sourced income.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Foreign salaries and freelance revenue from foreign clients fall outside the local government's tax net regardless of how long you stay.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Becoming a formal tax resident carries no cost on remote work earnings because the tax base never extended to that income in the first place.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Panama introduced its short stay visa for remote workers through Executive Decree 198 in May 2021.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: The program runs nine months and can be extended once for a total of 18 months.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Minimum annual income is$36,000 from foreign sources.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: A small, unique quirk, Panamanian immigration law requires applications to be filed through a licensed local attorney.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The visa is for individuals only, so typically families use the Friendly Nations visa, qualified investor visa, or another track.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Uruguay's digital nomad permit runs 180 days and is renewable once for a combined 12 months.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Tax residency in Uruguay triggers only if you spend more than 183 days in a calendar year, establish your center of vital interest there, or make a qualifying investment.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Foreign employment income is exempt from Uruguayan tax for residence as well, under Uruguay's territorial treatment of wages and salaries.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: For nomads whose income is mostly employment based, Uruguay imposes nothing.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: But if you plan on remaining in Uruguay for a substantial amount of time, read carefully about the modifications to Uruguay's tax scheme IMI covered in a recent article on the website.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Things have changed.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Malaysia's DE Rantau Nomad Pass leans on the country's territorial tax system and Budget 2025 extended Malaysia's foreign sourced income exemption for individuals through 2036.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Pass holders working remotely for non-Malaysian employers are not taxed on that income, but one condition applies.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: The exemption is formally contingent on the income having been subject to tax in its country of origin.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Most remote workers paid through foreign payroll meet this automatically.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: But if you want to be certain before going through the process, the income requirement is$24,000 per year, and the pass runs three to twelve months plus a renewal for up to twenty-four months.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It's valid for peninsular Malaysia only.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Now, how about an idyllic African destination?
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Seychelles operates a territorial tax system and has no capital gains or inheritance taxes, confirmed by the Seychelles Revenue Commission.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: With no formal minimum income requirement, the workation retreat visitor permit runs up to one year, with a possible six-month extension.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: Mauritius takes a slightly different route.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: One-year premium visa holders aren't taxed on foreign earnings for the first 183 days.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Past that threshold, holders become tax residents but are taxed on a remittance basis.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Foreign source income is only subject to Mauritian tax if and when it's brought into a Mauritian bank account.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Spending via foreign credit or debit cards doesn't constitute a remittance.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: A position confirmed in the DILU Supreme Court case.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk about Japan as it probably has the most unique framework in this video.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Rather than exempting income or running a territorial system, Japan simply caps the visa at six months, which is too short to trigger tax residency under Japanese law.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Launched in 2024 under the designated activities category, the program is explicitly non-renewable.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Applicants must leave Japan for at least six consecutive months before reapplying.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Japanese tax residency requires continuous presence of one year or more or establishment of domicile in the country.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Visa holders can't meet either test inside the six-month window, which means foreign source remote work income is not taxed in Japan while on their digital nomad visa.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: The income requirement is 10 million yen annually, roughly$65,000, making it the highest threshold on this list.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Applicants also need citizenship from one of 49 eligible countries with existing visa waiver and tax treaty agreements with Japan.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Japan is a short stay by design, not a base.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: So what's true is that none of these 15 programs resolves your home country obligations.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: American residents and citizens file worldwide no matter where they live or earn.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Europeans, Canadians, and Australians may retain residual tax obligations until they formally exit their domestic tax system.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: The visa only controls your exposure in the host country.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Exiting your domestic tax system is a separate question that depends on your citizenship, your domicile, and the tax treaties between the two jurisdictions.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Before committing to any of these programs, verify your position with a qualified cross-border tax advisor.

- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Now, the digital nomad visas in this video buy you a runaway of only 6 to 24 months.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: For a permanent move, you want tax residency in a jurisdiction that doesn't touch your foreign income in the first place.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: We covered all 29 countries globally that fit that description in the video on your screen.
