- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Luke Murray and this is the Yukon
- 0:02Speaker 1: Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We get together with.
- 0:04Speaker 1: The Huskies coaching staff players just about every week, and
- 0:08Speaker 1: we get into it. With the nine games remaining on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the schedule, you kind of almost fallen out of the rankings.
- 0:16Speaker 1: They had been I think in the top twenty five
- 0:19Speaker 1: for fifty one straight weeks. Thought this week might be
- 0:23Speaker 1: the week where that didn't happen. They didn't maintain that standing,
- 0:26Speaker 1: but they get a big win over Marquette, and now
- 0:29Speaker 1: you face the Saint John's team here, which is ride
- 0:32Speaker 1: and High. Right, they're having their best season in twenty
- 0:35Speaker 1: five years. Rick Patino, in his second year coaching there,
- 0:38Speaker 1: has them playing you know, Patino type ball. As you
- 0:43Speaker 1: view this going into it, Saint John's and what they've
- 0:46Speaker 1: done so far, is it a surprise to anybody in
- 0:50Speaker 1: the league, because Patino's got a history, right, He's done
- 0:53Speaker 1: this before with just about every school he's had a
- 0:55Speaker 1: hand on.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think I'm not sure how much
- 1:00Speaker 3: of a surprise it is to anybody. I mean, he's
- 1:02Speaker 3: one of the greatest coaches of all time, and so
- 1:05Speaker 3: you know, again, I think you know, his ability to
- 1:09Speaker 3: inspire this group at Saint John's and have them playing
- 1:11Speaker 3: as well as they they've played so far. You know,
- 1:14Speaker 3: at least from our perspective as a coaching staff, doesn't
- 1:16Speaker 3: come as in any major surprise. And they've got a
- 1:18Speaker 3: good roster. You know, they did a great job in
- 1:20Speaker 3: the offseason in terms of some of the additions. You know,
- 1:22Speaker 3: a guy like Kadari Richmond and Davon Smith. You know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: r J. Lewis has really taken a step forward this
- 1:28Speaker 3: year's ubetcha four who came off the bench for him
- 1:31Speaker 3: last year has made major strides at the five. So yeah,
- 1:35Speaker 3: I mean they've been really impressive. You know, they're a
- 1:37Speaker 3: terrific offensive rebounding team. They're very physical, strong experience group,
- 1:43Speaker 3: excellent on the defensive end of the floor. So we've
- 1:46Speaker 3: got a real challenge on Friday night.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about rebounding for a second. Husky's not
- 1:51Speaker 1: as dominant as they were the last couple of years.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Obviously Donovan clinging big part of that, but Dan Hurley
- 1:58Speaker 1: has been harping on getting the guards involved.
- 2:01Speaker 2: More and rebounding solo.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Ball's been able to get you know, some big time
- 2:05Speaker 1: rebound numbers together. Here are you seeing that the guards
- 2:09Speaker 1: are sensing the need and the showing you the ability
- 2:13Speaker 1: that maybe they can make a difference in the way
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yukon rebounds some basketball here down the stretch.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's been nice to see, you know.
- 2:21Speaker 3: I think Solo had eleven defensive rebounds in the game
- 2:24Speaker 3: against Marquette. He had eleven rebounds in the game against Xavior.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I think he had five or six rebounds against Paul.
- 2:31Speaker 3: So yeah, it's been nice to see him get on
- 2:33Speaker 3: the defensive glass. You know, Liam is an excellent defensive
- 2:36Speaker 3: rebounder from the guard position as well, so that'll be
- 2:38Speaker 3: a welcome edition, you know. And I think that the
- 2:41Speaker 3: big guys are battling. I mean, Terras's rebounding numbers as
- 2:45Speaker 3: an offensive and defensive rebounder, and this might surprise people,
- 2:48Speaker 3: but he's top thirty in the country in both in
- 2:51Speaker 3: terms of offensive and defensive rebounding rate, you know, and
- 2:53Speaker 3: that's come down a little bit in conference play, but
- 2:56Speaker 3: you know, he's a terrific rebounder when he's out there
- 2:58Speaker 3: for extended minutes, and we need him to really be
- 3:01Speaker 3: at his best so that he can be out there
- 3:03Speaker 3: a little bit more and help us on the boards.
- 3:05Speaker 3: And then Samson's battling, So we're gonna need everybody's commitment
- 3:09Speaker 3: on the glass. I don't think I've seen a better
- 3:11Speaker 3: offensive rebounding team than Saint John's this year, and all
- 3:14Speaker 3: five guys crash hard, and so we're gonna have to
- 3:17Speaker 3: really be physical and do a great job in that area.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Luke Murray's with us, you kind of assistant coach. Let's
- 3:22Speaker 1: talk about that, coach. Rebounding. It's the dirty stuff, it's
- 3:26Speaker 1: the gritty stuff. It's the black and blue part of
- 3:28Speaker 1: the game. But if you don't do that, you can
- 3:32Speaker 1: have a lot of trouble with a team like Saint
- 3:34Speaker 1: John's because they're gonna get second chance opportunities, they're gonna
- 3:38Speaker 1: get easy buckets. They could really disrupt the game. So
- 3:41Speaker 1: as you guys practice this week, what kind of things
- 3:44Speaker 1: are you talking about and strategizing about in terms of
- 3:47Speaker 1: keeping them off the boards at least neutralizing them.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean a lot of it is talk, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: I mean, truthfully, I mean, you're you're in a situation
- 3:57Speaker 3: now when you're into February. You know, there's only so
- 3:59Speaker 3: much kind of hand to hand combat that you can
- 4:01Speaker 3: have in practice in terms of guys banging into each
- 4:04Speaker 3: other and trying to do defensive rebounding drills. You know,
- 4:07Speaker 3: we might do that for a minute or two, you know,
- 4:10Speaker 3: just to kind of re emphasize that point. But for
- 4:13Speaker 3: the most part, it's film. It's talking about it, it's
- 4:16Speaker 3: placing an emphasis on it. When we are in live segments.
- 4:19Speaker 3: You know, it's it's getting our team to crash hard,
- 4:22Speaker 3: which we normally do anyway, so that's not that unusual
- 4:25Speaker 3: for us. But you know, just having an understanding of
- 4:28Speaker 3: what we're in for, you know a little bit like
- 4:29Speaker 3: we talked about the Marquette game, you know, having some
- 4:31Speaker 3: level of preparation for you know, this is what Saint
- 4:34Speaker 3: John's does best. You know, they're the number one offensive
- 4:36Speaker 3: rebounding team in our league, you know, and they're obviously
- 4:39Speaker 3: an excellent defensive rebounding team. They're excellent defensive team in general.
- 4:43Speaker 3: They force a ton of turnovers, you know, So you
- 4:46Speaker 3: mentioned it. It's going to be the physicality piece of
- 4:48Speaker 3: the game, which is going to be as important as anything.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And doesn't it come down to gang rebounding a little bit.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I mean, everyone's got to be involved you've got five
- 4:58Speaker 1: people on the court, no matter who they are. Jaden
- 5:00Speaker 1: Ross could be Ja Stu, could be Samson Johnson whoever.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It has to be a five man effort I think
- 5:07Speaker 1: in rebounding, would you agree with that?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah, totally, totally. You know, and if you ever have
- 5:12Speaker 3: a situation where you know a guy isn't going, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 3: sometimes maybe a guy like sim Wilcher or one of
- 5:18Speaker 3: their perimeter players may not go because they might be
- 5:20Speaker 3: back on the shot, or maybe they took the shot themselves. Well,
- 5:23Speaker 3: then whoever is guarding Sim Wiltscher's guy has to go
- 5:25Speaker 3: help us with zubietca for or r J. Lewis or
- 5:28Speaker 3: somebody else around the rim. You know, we talked about
- 5:30Speaker 3: Solo and his ability to defensive rebound for us recently.
- 5:33Speaker 3: So yeah, it's a it's a five man proposition for sure.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And if you don't defense and rebound against Saint John's,
- 5:39Speaker 3: you don't give yourself much of a chance.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all hands on deck, coach, We're not dead yet.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I was a Danker Hurley.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Quote after the game. I thought that was a pretty
- 5:48Speaker 2: good one.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, what do they say, right, Rumors of
- 5:52Speaker 3: our demise or over. I forget the exact quote, but
- 5:55Speaker 3: suddenly along those line and yeah, I mean we get Listen,
- 5:58Speaker 3: we got a big stretch here. We got St. John's
- 6:01Speaker 3: Friday Night, We've got Creighton at Creighton, which has been
- 6:04Speaker 3: obviously a really tough place for us to win recently,
- 6:06Speaker 3: but we also have an unbelievable opportunity to position ourselves
- 6:10Speaker 3: right back at the top of the league.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that'd be nice, that's for sure. All right, Coach Murray,
- 6:14Speaker 2: we appreciate it. Thanks so much. We'll see you this
- 6:17Speaker 2: week Friday night, Saint John's.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Sounds good much.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Thanks and thanks to Dan Hurley as well. As we
- 6:25Speaker 1: wrap up the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show and Friday Night,
- 6:29Speaker 1: let's be there, Let's rock the place at Gamble Pavilions
- 6:32Speaker 1: and Huskies take on the Red Storm, who are on
- 6:35Speaker 1: top of the Big East standings.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'm Mike Chrispino. Thanks for joining us.
