- 1:30SPEAKER_02: I'm doing great.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: I am um at a lake right now.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm recording from a lake.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm not on the lake now.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: I mean I have to do it.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know I can see you don't have a lake.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, coming at you live from a lake in North Carolina is where I am currently.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: Oh you oh you're in North Carolina.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I drove ten hours to get here two days ago.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: What's actually to be fair, um he will probably listen to this.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: My boyfriend drove the entire way.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I sat in the front.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Is that why you're up so you were up early today, dude?
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: I wanted to just take in the day.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I wanted to I actually did, I it was really lovely.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: I made some coffee and I walked out to the lake and I saw some fish swimming around.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Um and some other critters.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: I saw a bird.
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: It was either a crane or an egret.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: Don't know which.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: My mom would be mad.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: She's really into birds.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Um be gone that I don't know about it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I couldn't help you.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I'm terrible with birds.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: It's hard- they look really similar, most birds.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: They do.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: It's tough.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: We have like, I don't know, in in my garden here, we have like a handful of birds, but I could not tell you what they are.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it's hard to my mom can like look just at a random brown bird and be like, that's a wood nymph or what I that's not a real bird, but you know what I mean.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Um, so you've come on to talk about uh the movie.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: I've come on to talk about a movie.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: I've come to talk to a man about a movie today on this podcast.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: You you had a a number of suggestions actually, didn't you, as well?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: I I I suggested them so long ago that now I'm kind of forgetting.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm trying to remember what you suggested.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: I remember you suggesting a bunch and me singling in on this because I have my feelings about this one.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: And I think this was ultimately the best choice out of the suggestions because the other ones would have been hard.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, I did suggest one movie which has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Um what was that again?
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: I can't remember if I'd heard of it or not.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: It was called I think Beauty and the Briefcase is what it's called.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's the one.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: I've never seen it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I have heard of that.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: It is for anyone listening, if you it's genuinely like one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's horrible.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: It's not a good movie at all.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: Um it's on Netflix, I think, or one of the big streaming.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: I remember I watched it once because I was like, I don't want to have to use even a single brain cell.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't want to really feel engaged.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: Like I just wanted to be basically comatose watching.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Um I wanted a comatose watching experience, and it gave me exactly that.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Like it it's an amazing movie if you just want to like completely turn your brain off.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Um Do you know how much that's coming up lately as well?
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Not the beauty in the uh briefcase thing, but like the turning up, like not wanting to think about watching a movie.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: I wonder if there's something like within the last year that's like turning us turning us into that.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: Well, I think it is notable that it's such a good like turning your brain off movie that it didn't even merit one single like critical review.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: I'm very surprised.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: Is it a TV movie?
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: Or is it.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: It was like a TV movie that I guess now has been released onto streaming.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: So that's possibly why it's got not re not got any reviews, because because of the fact that.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Um but you what can you remember what else that you suggested?
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: It was so it was a while ago.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: I uh suggested, I think I may have also suggested wait, now I'm like going back in our DMs.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Oh yes.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: My the first thing I suggested was beating the briefcase.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Oh, I also suggested the film Alex Ryder Operation Stormbreaker.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Have you seen that one?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: I haven't, and it I've gotta be honest, it really doesn't appeal to me.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: That is fair.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: It to be fair, it mostly appeals to 12-year-old girls, which uh was when I loved it.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: So I know my sisters really enjoy that, or they did at the time.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, but they're also like eight years younger than me, so that's possibly why pretty much every sleepover I went to in uh late elementary and middle school, we uh watched the film Alex Ryder Operation Stormbreaker.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, loved it.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: That's that's so like that's not a movie that I would expect to be like pulled out of, like for one to be like, oh, we all have to watch this one.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: This is the one we're gonna We loved it.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: We thought we thought Alex Ryder was the cutest boy we had ever seen in our lives, and we thought he was so heroic and so brave.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Um it was either that or clueless, those were the two staples.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Clueless, I can understand that that did come up a lot as well.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Like, I I don't know if I ever watched that as Sleepover, but like I do remember that being like a big thing when I was a kid.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Um, but obviously that's got a a very high rating.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, that one that one definitely uh acclaimed everyone everyone else.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: But yeah, 12-year-old me wanted to have the style of Clueless and the confidence of Cher, and then a boyfriend that looked like Alex Ryder.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: Like that was the dream.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Um didn't exactly pan out like that, but which is probably for the best.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So you're you're saying your boyfriend doesn't look like Alex Ryder.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: No, but he's very handsome, but he can't like fight a big jellyfish and ride a motorcycle.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Although maybe he could ride a motorcycle, I don't know.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: He probably could.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: You gotta test him while you're in uh by the lake, like riding a motorcycle by the lake.
- 7:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna be like, ride a motorcycle off of that building, see what happens.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: What was a movie I I watched?
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: I watched something for this podcast, and they were like someone did ride a motorcycle by the lake.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: It was like then he did like a stunt.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: Um what was that?
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Uh I can't remember.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: It was some like action movie.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: Sounds like it.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: In action movies, they love to ride motorcycles, especially by lakes, off of things, anyway.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: It was it was ridiculous, I remember.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And then he yeah.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: I want to know, like, I want someone to make a montage of just um like stunt doubles in action movies.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Um and I want to know more about them.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: I feel like not enough.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there's a documentary out there where they interview stunt doubles and talk to them about I don't I don't know, but is there like I wonder if there's something you have to sign when you're a stunt double that's like I will not talk about like where I'm a stunt double in the film to like create some illusion that I wasn't actually there?
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I mean I've seen I've seen videos on YouTube where a stunt double is like going over like some of the stunts they've been in and like showing like where they are and everything, like pointing themselves out in like Captain America and stuff.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: So I'm like maybe maybe you can reveal it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Um I'd have seen have you have you seen the clip of the Scarlett Johansson in the uh in one of the in one of the Marvel movies, but she's like tied up to a chair and she's doing all these acrobatics and everything, and then it's like revealed, and then they like if you pause it, you can see it's like a giant man that's like doing a stunt.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I have not seen that.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: So funny.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: He's he's huge.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: That is so funny.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: Really, really funny.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna have to look at it.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It's like how did no one notice this?
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: I know, well, I feel like that's the case for a lot of them.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: It's if you really like pause, you can see that uh it's very clear.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Um there was a shirt.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know if this was popular, if this was a popular shirt in the UK, but I remember a lot of like boys, like nine and ten-year-old boys when I was growing up, there was this shirt that a lot of them had that said I do my own stunts.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Are you familiar with this shirt?
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: I think it had like a stunning.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: No, not at all.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Um I always think about that when I think about stunt devils with like these little boys with this I do my own stunts shirt.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: And the stunts were like hopping over a rock, or I don't know, but it was very popular among nine-year-old boys.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Wait, but that does bring me to kind of about this as well.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Like how wait, I if you don't mind revealing, how old are you?
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: I'm 25.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: 25, okay.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: So that makes this an interesting pick for you then.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: I know, and I know.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: Um and it's interesting because when I chose it, I in my mind, I was like, this was a popular movie when I was an age where I enjoyed movies.
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Like, because like looking back, I was like, oh yeah, definitely.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: It must have come out around the time when I was like nine or ten, and I would have I liked it.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: And I looked it up and I was like, oh my gosh, it came out like when I was born.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: But it really, I mean, that's a testament to just like how popular it was and for how long it was popular.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: I didn't realize it was popular beyond like my age range.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Oh really?
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: I remember.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: So I thought like the people around like yeah, people around like early 30s, I thought it was like around that.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: No, yeah.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: I mean, I remember it was on it like Nick at night all the time.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: This is good burger, by the way.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: I feel like we haven't named it yet.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: Did we name it?
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: I think I said it this th I think I named it.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, good.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Thank God.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: We haven't said the plot, but yeah.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: No.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: No one knows what it's about, but people know good.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: We'll get to it.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: We'll get to it.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I was just saying how it like people my age definitely knew, like, welcome to Good Burger, Home of the Good Burger.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Like I would hear that all the time.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: Kids love to do that voice.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Um, and yeah, I feel like it was like a nick at night staple.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Like, if I stayed up too late, Goodburger would be playing.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: Like almost definitely.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Did you um did you watch all that growing up?
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: So I feel like all that I was not as I was maybe like a little too young for.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: I do remember it.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: I and I remember um I feel like all that and Goodburger were two things that I really wanted to know about because it felt like all the cool older kids had that, and like I had like the lame like Drake and Josh, and like I Carly era, which now it's funny because little kids are like that's Gerald.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: You know, it's now it's just shifted time.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: But I was too old for that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: So like I that all that passed me by.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: I was just um but I don't know.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: I feel like I I did like not a lot, but some amount of like reading into all that and Keenan Nikel and all of this to like when I was watching the movie and to prepare for this podcast, and um it just is was such an innovative and cool show that like kids got their own sketch show.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: Interestingly enough, we never got all that in the UK.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: To my knowledge, I I watched a lot of Nickelodeon as a kid, and we I don't remember all that whatsoever.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: So my knowledge of Goodberg going into it was Kenyan and Kale, which was like the biggest show for me at the time.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Um as a so when was this?
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: 97, so I was eight when this came out, and it was huge from what I remember.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Um I was obsessed with Kenyan and Kale as a kid, and uh so this was like the ideal I didn't even know that this was a um like this started as a sketch at the time.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: Becca Burger started as a sketch?
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I had no idea it had come from all that um and so like and so that this was my first kind of interaction with the these characters themselves, but it was just like I I loved it as a kid.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: I love this movie.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's I mean, it's so much fun.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: Like it's just yeah, it's such a good time.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: I watched it last night, um and like it's so it's not just fun, it's like colorful and loud.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like um something movies in the 90s were allowed to be so colorful and crazy and loud and strange.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: I and I'm sure, I don't know, I'm sure there's movies today that are like that, but um also just seeing it was so nostalgic.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Like the movie opens and you see that like a little like animated uh cup of soda tips over and it's like the Nickelodeon logo, and it really brought me back.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: I was it does, isn't it?
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: It was very nice.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: It's so strange seeing all that now.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: I haven't seen this in I hadn't seen this in a long, long time when I watched it last night as well, and I was just like so nostalgic for this whole time period.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, and I remember like even in the background of like shots, there's like um you see on the opposite of where Goodburger is, uh you can see like a blockbuster and everything, and I'm like, oh I miss Blockbuster as well.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: Blockbuster where I probably rented this for the first time.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, yeah, I know.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: I I feel like Goodburger to me, I see it as being that like orange uh VHS tape.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Uh I like did you so was this the obviously you never saw it when it came out, but you do you remember when you first saw it?
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: I don't have a clear memory of first seeing it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: And I don't even know, I feel like for a long time Goodburger to me almost operated as sketches because it would be on TV and I'd watch like 15 minutes of it.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: And I it was funny because I'm sure at some point in my childhood I watched the whole thing, but I think more often I would just like pop into it for 20 minutes and then because I feel like when we were growing up and like you t movies were on TV and not like on Netflix and stuff, like it was there was it was more frequent that you would just watch parts of a movie and then like off.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: So when I was watching it last night, I was like, oh my god, this story is crazier than I ever believed.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Like it so yeah, I think I don't quite remember, but I definitely like have memories of being alone in my attic, and it's like 10 30 or 11, I'm I'm up too late, and Good Burger comes on TV, and I'm like, oh my gosh, this is the cool movie that all the older kids are always quoting.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and I had no idea who like Sinbad was or who any like I probably didn't even know who like Shakyel O'Neal was when he does that like little cameo.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's uh it was never an older kids movie for me, like, but it was obviously because it was like it was literally my uh like time period.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: But like what so you so Good Burger, you remember being of that age.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Did you watch Kenan and Kel?
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: It was probably a similar situation where I saw it if I like was staying up late or if I was around because I I'm the oldest of my siblings, so I didn't even get like to sit in the room while my older siblings were watching things, you know.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like sometimes I would go over to my friends' houses who had over older siblings, and you'd be like, We're watching Kenan and Kel, we're watching all that, we're watching the cool like shows.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, I never like got I I had like definitely an understanding of who Kenan and Kel were, but I don't think I ever got to be really immersed in Kenan and Kel the way I eventually like got to watch and love Good Burger because Kenan and Kel obviously is like a series and there's more to it, and you can't like you know Yeah, it's so funny that you had you held that you've like held such a connection to this movie then because it's like um it's so interesting.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Um I obviously grew up watching Kenan and Kel, the show, and to me that so like when I was watching this again last night, I was like watching through it and I was like there's less to this movie than I remember.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: And I'm wondering if I was like associating parts of Keenan and Kelly.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: I was wondering I'm wondering if I was now associating parts of Keenan and Kel with this movie.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: It all just became one amorphous piece of comedy.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Because it's all exactly that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Like all of the it's obviously Kel being the ridiculous one, Keenan being the straight man for the most part, and then they get into hijinks, and that's what the show is, and that's what this movie is.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Um but obviously this movie heightens that.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Um but it's also like the same it's Dan Sn Dan Schneider's not Keenan and Kel, I don't think.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: But he's like involved with like all of Nickelodeon.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: He's very involved, and I think he's like Didn't isn't Dan Schneider like not good?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: I wasn't sure how much we should talk about that, but that's what I've heard.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: I didn't I my understanding, and I don't know a ton about the Dan Schneider situation, is that he got fired because he like had some sort of like foot fetish or just was like not.
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Allegedly.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: Alleged allegedly, allegedly.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well I want to say allegedly.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: But um it seems it seems bad.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Um I know he I know he got fired from Nick he did definitely get fired from Nickelodeon in 2018.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well I think of Nickelodeon was like, his projects um he's fin he has finished them, and we would not like him to start any new ones.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: You know, I feel like it was something like that where it was like he's not fired, but we would like for him to not uh continue his work.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: But also this is very much his project.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well and he was like he's in it as well, yeah.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: And so one thing I was looking out for in this movie, I don't know if you noticed anything, but I was looking out for any kind of like gratuitous foot shots.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: There's not.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: There's nothing, no.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't see any.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: So I wonder if it came later.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Um I also don't remember that when during my kind of like time.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: The foot that's I don't remember that being a thing, yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: I think until like the i iCali and onwards.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: It might be more like women's feet, which is I mean Yeah, but at the same time, that there are women in this movie.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I'm surprised he didn't do that with Carmen Electra.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Ugh, very oh god.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Um, I didn't notice anything, and I was on the lookout for it, because as soon as I saw him in the movie, I was like, oh my god.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Like I know I forgot he was in this.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: And then I s um I was watching it, I sent a picture to my sisters, and I was like, I'm watching, I'm watching that guy.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: Because they all they know everything about that, because obviously it's very it's very strange.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: And the first thing they wrote back was who picked this classic?
- 20:36unknown: Oh god.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: No, because they they love the they love the movie.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Oh good, I'm glad.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: Um it is a classic, it's just like oh my gosh.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: And the beginning sequence with um where uh Ed is having the bad dream and he like falls down the hole and like the hamburgers are talking.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: Well, it's also just I mean, I forgot to I think, and I think part of what makes it a classic is that like as you grow up you want to keep watching it, partly because it's like probably really fun to watch when you're high.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Um and I was like, I I knew it had become like a stoner classic as well.
- 21:19SPEAKER_02: Um, but watching it, and literally in the first five minutes, there's like puppet hamburgers that are talking.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh wow, no, I really like it.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's Ed is like very much a stoner without saying it for a kid.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 21:37SPEAKER_02: Which I feel like that character like like is a stoner, but we can't say that they are and we can't.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: That's what I mean.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: Was a big trope in like early Nickelodeon shows, you know.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Like they'd be like, Oh, he's just kinda like an airhead, and we were like, Oh how funny, and then we grew up and we were like, Oh no, they were supposed to be like He's supposed to be a stoner.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: Um I try to think who else did that.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: They did I guess they kind of did that a lot with like characters and all that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: I have seen all that since then, but um yeah, they did a few characters with that.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: But um yeah, another thing is I remember what you were saying earlier was that um there were a lot of cameos in this that you didn't realise like growing up or whatever, but like for me they were all huge people.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: I remember a bit like thinking, oh, this is so like at the start, uh Keenan's like Dexter's best friend best friend is um played by Marquise Houston, who is Roger from T uh from Sister Sister.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if you remember Sister Sister or not, but like Sister Sister was like those were my two shows growing up, but Keenan and Kel and Sister Sister.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: So to see the two of them together in a movie, I was so excited.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: And even though he has like three lines, it's so Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: And it was like very exciting too, I'm sure, at the time.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: It blew my mind, and you were like, oh my god, the universes are colliding.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the universes are collided, yeah, exactly.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: And um, and who else is in it?
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: So there was all the all the old that characters are in it as well, from what I remember, but I don't I didn't know them at the time, but now I'm looking back on them, they were like all cameo, they did all have cameos in it.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Then there was Shaquille O'Neal, obviously one of the biggest stars at the time.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I loved ironically, I loved Kazam as a kid as well.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Like the movie, I don't know.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: I don't think I'm super familiar with that one.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, Kazam is one of the worst movies ever made.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: If you ever go back and watch it now, it is appalling.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: He's a genie.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Something I'm just realizing.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Do you know are you aware of the Mandela effect?
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so it for anyone who's listening that does not aware, is it's where like some some people are certain that something has happened, but it's actually the opp like it's something completely different has happened and they're like, oh, it's a different.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: So there's a thing with Kazam where people insist that Sinbad is in it, but it's actually Shaq.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: And now I'm looking back and I'm like, Is it because of this?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Did that and I'm like, did they come from this?
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: Because they're in the same movie together.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: Have you just solved something?
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: I feel like this is a this we need to alert the media.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: World.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: But they that yeah, but like people were insisting, like, Sinbad's in that movie and he plays a genius.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: Like, no, he doesn't, it's Shaq.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: And wow.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: But that came out like a year before this.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: No.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And Sinbad gets like so angry about it when people ask him.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: He's like, no, I was not in that movie.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Um but yes, my my exposure to Sinbad was from this.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: And no, wait, that's a lie, actually, because he was in Jingle all the way.
- 25:03unknown: Wow.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: So that's not true.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Well, your second exposure to Sinbad.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: But again, like he so he was I guess he was like very big at the time.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Because those were like right around the same time.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so Sinbad, Carmen Electra, I remember being a big deal at the time.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Um who else is in this movie?
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Linda Cardellini.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Linda Cardellini, yes.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: That's another one.
- 25:27SPEAKER_02: Which who no one would have known at the time, but who now?
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: No one would have known at the time, but I remember freaks and geeks, too.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Like this is pre-Freaks and Geeks.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Interestingly enough, though, another like young connection thing.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: I knew her from Boy Meets World.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: Uh, she's in an episode of Boy Meets World where um she uh Corey cheats on Tafanga with her, and it was a big, big, big story at the time.
- 25:56SPEAKER_02: She was a controversial character.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I remember people hating her.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: Well, she was a controversial character in that, and she's probably also a controversial character in this.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Um different ways.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: In a different way.
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: That I the whole scene where they're in what is the asylum called?
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: I guess I don't want to get if we're gonna go through the movie, I don't want to get too far into it, but um Yeah, I guess let's explain the plot then.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Let's let's let's play uh I'll explain the premise and then we can kind of go through the plot.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: Um so the premise is uh this teenager gets into it's the last day of school and he's leaving and he's he's like taking his mum's car out for um it despite her not knowing about it because she's she's away on vacation.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: And despite him not having a license.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: And he doesn't have a license.
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: He takes it out and crashes the car into his teacher's car.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: His teacher who is Sinbad.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: Teacher's Sinbad, yes.
- 26:55SPEAKER_02: When your teacher is Sinbad, crazy things can happen.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: Sinbad who thinks he's uh sharved as well.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: Um because of that, he has to get a summer job and he gets it at this uh to s to get the money back to pay off because otherwise he's going to get uh reported to the police, basically.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: And he doesn't make it.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Which the teacher is really being pretty cool.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: He's like He's very calm about it, isn't he?
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: I I was like, I was like, this guy's pretty like he was like, listen, kid, like just work hard and pay it off.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Like I don't want you to pay it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Like I I guess the timeline is pretty short.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: No, but like I'm not the short not the fact that it's short, it's just like I will wait three months for you to pay it off.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah, I know.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: I thought it was very and I mean his poor sin bat is not really repaid in the end.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: No.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: Um and also like he has the worst luck in this movie.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: He really does.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Um and he seems like a cool guy and a kind teacher.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Um despite Dexter being kind of a dick to him at the start as well.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, so like he crashes the car, he has to save up the money, so he gets a job at this place called Good Burger, fast food chain.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Well, he starts like not even a chain, so.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: Oh yes, he starts at Mundo Burger, which is a brand new corporation, sort of like this very fancy place.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Is it a corporation?
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: No, it's just like one, isn't it, I guess.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: But it's like I think it's just one, but it's run as if they want to expand.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: It's run as if it's like Dave and Busters or something.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: It's huge.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: It's space age.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: Everyone's wearing a space suit for reasons that don't totally make sense.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Like the seemingly the conceit of this burger operation.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: They loved doing that at the time.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I remember that was a very common thing.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: Like space and like all of those kind of costumes that were like design, like designed like that.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: They loved putting that in like kid shows.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they seemingly had just like an unending spool of that like shiny silver fabric, and they had to use all of it.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: And now it's all gone forever.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: And now we can never use it again.
- 29:15SPEAKER_02: It's not going to be made again.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: I really hope that does not come back because it's awful.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: You're so right.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Like, we would always be wearing these like shiny like articles of clothing that you never they don't, it doesn't exist in reality.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Where is it gone?
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: You cannot see it, you don't even see it anywhere now.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: No, and yeah, it's like disappearing.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Everyone at Mondoburger is wearing those jumpsuits.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: They love just like a one piece.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: A one piece of like a shiny silver jumpsuit.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Um so they're all wearing that, and he gets a job there, and these burgers are like huge for some reason.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: They don't he doesn't know why, but like he's trying to assemble the burgers, and he's doing like the worst job you've ever seen ever.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: Like, he is so incompetent.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Um he's really bungling it.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: And he gets like he starts back chatting, basically, to the boss, and he gets fired immediately.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: The boss who is just a very, very angry blonde man.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, another common thing of those of that time.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Like the spiky haired blonde guy.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: That guy doesn't really have much of a backstory besides that he just wants to make a lot of money, I guess.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: And also he seems very young to have.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: He does seem very young.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, him and like his two cohorts are just seemingly these like 23-year-olds who are operating this evil burger, not even chain, evil burger theme that's even.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: And we're in outer space.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: I d it doesn't and that's the thing, when you're a kid, you suspend all disbelief.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: And when you're a kid, yeah, it makes sense when you can because he's like, yeah, he seems old when you're a kid, and now you're like watching your back, you're like, he's so young.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Um also he like no this guy who plays him doesn't seem to have acted again.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Like he's No, I was trying to find him because I was like, this must be a famous guy, but it's just his big role.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: He looked very familiar.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: He does look a very familiar face, but he hasn't been in anything else that I've seen.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: So yeah, very strange.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: Um but basically like gets fired and then he ends up getting a uh like it ends up that Ed gets him a job.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: He meets Ed, Ed gets him a job at uh Goodburger.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: Because he goes and he goes and sits in Goodburger and starts eating.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Um basically.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: You know, he gets Ed manages to get him a job there.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: And ironically, his job is to drive the delivery car, even though he's just gotten in a car crash.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because he likes to be like, Yeah.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: One of the lines that really made me laugh is when uh the boss at Good Burger is like, Have you ever been in an accident?
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: And uh Keenan slash Dexter is like, not that you know of.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of great lines in this, actually.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of like stuff where Ed's like someone will say something to Ed and he like the the language of it he takes and like interprets it in a different way, and it's so funny.
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: I can't remember I don't know if I haven't got anything written down though.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know if I wrote any of the actual dialogue down.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, but it's so funny.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I feel it's the sort of stuff I don't know if this is from Goodburger, if I just saw it in a other in like an all that sketch, but like it's the type of humor where it's like um they're like, I wanted it rare and this is well done.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: And then because they say well done, he's like, Thank you, you know, like it's that sort of like wordplay.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: You just reminded me of one, actually.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: It's it's the one where he goes, Um, I asked for this burger with nothing on it.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: And he goes, Yeah, I gave you I gave you it with nothing on it.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: And he goes, No, you just gave me the bun.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: And he goes, he goes, I wanted the burger.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: You say, Well, you should have asked for the burger then and just stuff like that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Um, which is all very it's very stupid humor, but it's funny.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's very still makes me laugh to this day.
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: Very simple, also just a lot of like physical like faces, like a lot of like just funny faces will be the joke, where like he gets stuck in um the milkshake machine at one point, and he just like it's just like truly two or three full minutes of like him just like doing this gag in the milkshake machine.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Like they were like, like, I'm I was just trying to imagine the script, and they were like, and this is where he plays in the milkshake machine, and we kind of let him do whatever he wants.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: She's going, whoa! Like rolling around in it.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: It's so funny.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Like, that's the other thing.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: So, like, I remember Kel being the star back then, and it's interesting to see now like what happened because of SNL.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: It is so interesting, and something I didn't know that I'm sure is like a fact that everyone knows, is that um Keenan and Kel auditioned for SNL at the same time.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: I I'm sure that oh my gosh.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: It's what led to their like the the kind of fallout over time.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Now they're friends again, but like it did at the time it led to their fallout because Keenan got the show, obviously.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: And like if you look back on it, you're like, I would have been certain Kelp would have been the one to get on there out of the two of them.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Well, it's really funny, yeah, it because he's like the character, yeah.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Like it's it's odd that the straight man made it on the show, but then.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: I guess they need I just guess they needed needed him, yeah.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: But like now it's so clear how talented Keenan is.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: And obviously, like Keenan's been around, Keenan was around before before Kel was as well, because he was on he was like in Mighty Darks, he was in heavyweights, um, he had like a career before, whereas Kel was kind of like all that, Keenan and Kel, and then disappeared.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: Even though it was Kel's.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: I I was I was reading a bit of this oral history, and Kel even talks about how like Keenan had been in, he references specifically Mighty Ducks, and he was like, but this is my first like big movie, like it was the first big movie he had done.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I feel like there's not a lot of um sketch actors like Keenan Thompson who are so good at subtlety, like he's good at like subtle facial expressions and like just reading a line in like the perfect way.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: And granted, like he can do big characters too, obviously, but he's so good at being like a straight man or just like a like a host sort of character.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: It's a very, very hard role to play, and he does it so well.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Yes, and you can see it in Good Burger, like you see him it's just it's I mean, I'm not the first, and I won't be the last to talk about how good of a comedic actor he is, but it's it really is wild that he's been so good for so long.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: It's what's wild to me is like he's gone from so I think it I think I read something that he would like he's been in he's he hasn't stopped since like 95 or something like that.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: He's just like consistently been in something, some kind of TV show or movie, like since 95.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: Like Dominion Sketch.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Which is wild, like that's such a career.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: It really is and uh one of the one of the other things I will I I brought up before when I talked about heavyweights, but like uh there's a thing in a thing like widely known about Keenan where they write into like when they need him, when a sketch isn't working on SNL, they write in Keenan reacts.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Because they know that because they know that he can like salvage a sketch through just facial expressions.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Well it I you can feel that happening in Goodburger as well.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Because I do feel like and maybe this is maybe this is um I I do love the film, but I feel like now as an adult watching it, like the the kill, the bit does get like a little like as the movie goes on.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, especially like I feel like I was watching it like stone sober at like 10 p.m.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like if I was like a little bit drunk, I'd be like, oh have fun.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: But I was like tired and I was like, oh my god.
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: Um but it really helps.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Like I feel like the reason that like crazy, kind of annoying character is able to last the whole movie is because Keenan is there like playing to ground it well.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, totally.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: And Keenan's there to be like us, I feel like.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: He's there to he's there for as so it's interesting they kind of make him a little bit I guess arrogant at the start.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: Um a little bit cocky about where he is.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: I guess it's like maybe to ground him a little bit uh when he lo when he like has to start working at Goodburg or he needs to be like kind of become a little bit like if he was just getting the job there, if it's just like oh you've got to go get your summer job there, like you wouldn't you wouldn't really feel like a whole lot for him, but then you I guess yeah.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: Um so alright, let's talk let's talk through the movie then.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 38:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we got a little bit on a tangent.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: Uh it's my fault.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Like um, I always go on tangents on these.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: Um it opens with uh obviously like you see like you were saying, it opens with first of all it opens with the milkshake thing.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Uh which brings back the nostalgia.
- 38:45SPEAKER_02: Um the Nickelodeon logo, yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Nickelodeon logo.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: And then it opens with the classic line, Welcome to Good Burger, Home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Um which was I feel like I think that's the only thing they took from the sketch and like brought into.
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: Um I guess so.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's a good one.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: But um Yeah, I think that's the only thing that they actually took from it.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: But then Ed's like start like he takes the order and then he starts imagining like these talking burgers.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: And he's like, and then he's and then he's like floats in the air, and all these talking burgers are like going round and everything, and then he wakes up, obviously, uh it's a kid's it's all a dream, and that's how you open a kid's movie all the time.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: Um I also he he there's this very fun montage where he sings the song like I'm a dude, you're a dude, we're all dudes, and he showers fully clothed.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say he wakes up in his uniform and then gets in the shower and he's still in his uniform.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: But there's also like the when he wakes up, he p he picks up the alarm and he goes, uh, a clock.
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's so dark.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: It's so stupid, but it's made me laugh so much.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, he's like you said, he's singing in he's singing I'm a dude, uh, which is like the the song for the movie.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Um, beautiful song, we're all dudes.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: I'm a dude, you're a dude, she's a dude.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're all dudes.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: It's so true.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: I remember that song so well as well.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: Hmm.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: I mean it's very like if you're like 12 years old, that's a song that you're gonna love.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: So repetitive, you get to say the word dude a lot.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: It's um what's the start of music?
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: It's um uh not ska.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Kind of scar, but the start of like the song?
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: No, what's the style of the sort?
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: The style of the screen.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: Oh the style of the music.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Um oh gosh.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: The genre.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: It's like it's all it's genre-less.
- 40:54SPEAKER_02: It it it it cannot be defined.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: No, the reason I ask is because it was a style that was very popular at the time and then like disappeared as well.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: I don't know if I could put a category on it.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: I don't, I'm realizing I don't know a lot about the styles of music.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, wait, what are there?
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: There's country, um, there's uh pop music.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to look up.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: So it's Less Than Jake.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: The the band who I'm not uh as far as I know, this is their their one big uh hit.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I think they were uh bigger.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: I think they had a lot of songs.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry, Less than Jake.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: I'm really anyone from Less Than Jake is listening to this, please.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: I was really young and I didn't know.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: And I'm still really young and I still don't know.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: They're being defined as rock music, which I would disagree.
- 41:55SPEAKER_02: Um Natska, not ska at all.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Um but anyway, like that was it was a style that was like it was a a very like popular like trumpet-y style of music that was popular at the time.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I've gone off tangent.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: I'll go off on a tangent again.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Anyway, like Ed leaves to go to work and rollerblades to work.
- 42:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: There's also this really fun sequence where like he he injures multiple people.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: He like Oh yeah.
- 42:29SPEAKER_02: There's there's a part where like a girl's jump roping and he rollerblades through the jump rope and catches her on the jump rope and like drags her behind him.
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: It's like the sort of physical like humor that like you really can't do in kids' stuff anymore.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: Kids would really hurt each other if they tried to like mimic it.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: I'm sure kids were doing stuff like that as well back in the day, but yeah.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: It's fascinating to see like now, like um yeah, and then he like accidentally knocks into a baby and like gets like switches with the basketball and like dunks the baby, and they dun then not dunking the baby.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Um I feel like dunking accidentally dunking a baby like a basketball is a very 90s uh like funny thing to do.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: The baby is fine, by the way.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: I think I I don't know if you actually see the baby once it goes to the basketball hoop, but I assume that it you see it when it lands in the guy's hands because he picks it, sorry, he picks it up and he's like uh not don't picks it up, he catches it and he's like looking at the baby and you see it like face on.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: Okay, good.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Um so I don't think you ever see it until then, but um but basically he goes he goes to work and they're like talking about Mondo Burger there.
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: And he's like, What's Mondo Burger?
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: And they're like, Well the place that's been on his way to work he runs he runs into um Dexter.
- 43:54SPEAKER_02: He like, oh no, does this happen after No, no, he does it, it happens afterwards.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: I literally watched this less than twenty four hours ago up.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: My like time.
- 44:01SPEAKER_02: I have like three brain cells.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I would have agreed with you if I hadn't got it in my notes.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: Like, I if I hadn't got a section in the notes in the middle of that, I would have I would have agreed with you.
- 44:10SPEAKER_02: I'm like interrupting the notes, which are exactly the story to be like, no, I think.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: No, no, it's all good.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: It's all good.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, Mondo Burger is opening in three day uh three days, but it it somehow hasn't noticed that it's been building across the street for nine months.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: Um but basically Mundo Burger, they were all worried because it's gonna like put Good Burger out of business.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: They kind of know that it is because it looks so amazing.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Um and meanwhile, it's the last day of school, and Dexter, Keenan's character, is like is leaving and he hangs out with his best friend, and he like gets in the car, has the crash, like we said.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, uh, because Ed skate Ed leaves to go home and skates in front of him.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: There we have it, yes.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: That is what happens.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: And here's the other thing is I remember being this being a very, very, very expensive car at the time.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: And now I look back on it, I'm like the red car that he's driving.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm like, it looks fine, it doesn't look anything amazing.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: It's so funny to see that.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: In my mind, it was like it was like a Ferrari or something, and I'm like looking back, I'm like, uh no, it's just a car.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: It's just a shiny red car.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:29SPEAKER_01: Um just the power of what they sold to me at the time, like that it in my mind because uh his friend's like, Wow, you got this car, he's like, It's my mom's fancy car, and you're like, Yes, it is, it's cool.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, he crashes into his teacher, and because he has no license, he got his teacher quotes him$1,900 to fix it.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: And so he has to save up$1,900 by getting a job.
- 45:56SPEAKER_02: So he gets$1,900 and I think he needs an extra$800 to fix his mom's car, too.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 46:02SPEAKER_02: At one point he says that.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: It's the number, the exact number that he um needs.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: See, this is why you shouldn't watch this movie when you're like really sober, because I was like paying attention to the numbers.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: I was like, wait, so he needs this much, and then he needs like it's like I don't think that actually matters.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: But I'm not sure.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was two and I still wasn't like I was like, I don't actually care about the amount.
- 46:20SPEAKER_01: It's it's inconsequential to the movie.
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: Well, I of course, the minute I heard like because he does do the math, he's like, if I make five dollars an hour, but the the joke at the end of it, he's like, it's gonna take me the rest of my life to think it back.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: It does someone did work out in the IMDB trivia.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Um, which I don't have up.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna bring it up because it was like someone worked out how long it would take.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, not that it's like that complicated, it's just five dollars an hour uh for six hours uh five days a week.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 46:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, I didn't excel at math.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: I'm not good at math either.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: Uh but uh it would have taken 13 weeks.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: 13 weeks.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: That sounds like the summer.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the whole summer, isn't it?
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: Alright.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: They got it right.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: They did the math right.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: Unless he had to also pay off his mom's car, in which case.
- 47:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's for the 1990s.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: And that's a plot hole.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Um anyway, this is absolutely not really the numbers are not really important.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: No, they're very important.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: Without it, we don't have a movie.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: About how this these numbers are not adding up.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: Everyone's gonna be furious.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: It ruins the movie.
- 47:35SPEAKER_02: Suddenly I get on this podcast to like shit shit on the movie.
- 47:39SPEAKER_02: You're like, wait, you're supposed to be saying nice things about the movie, and I'm like, the numbers don't make sense.
- 47:45SPEAKER_01: Um so he gets the job at Mondo Burger, and they uh basically he gets he does he messes off immediately, talks back to the boss and gets fired.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: So he goes over to sit at Good Burger and like drown his sorrows in a good in a Good Burger, and Ed sits down and starts talking to him, um, and he's like, Oh, you look familiar, and he's like, Oh, have you ever been to Australia?
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: And Dex is like no, and he goes, Oh, neither have I.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: So dumb.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: Another classic Ed joke.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and he goes, Oh, maybe I look like um maybe I look like a uh a princess or something like that.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: It's like what are you talking about?
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: Um but Ed gets him a job as the like the delivery guy.
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: But one thing I remember is like, or not remember, one thing I've noticed is like he's only the delivery guy for like this scene and then never again.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:46SPEAKER_02: Because when he gets the job, he's like, you'll be our delivery guy, and you'll have to clean like the counter sometimes.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: He says like you'll have to like do some counter work, and it seems like most of his job is doing this counter work that seemed like not a big deal when he was hired.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: I think they just wanted to show this but this burger mobile that they had to bring in.
- 49:05SPEAKER_01: I mean it's a big thing.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: Which is a car with a big burger on the front.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: Um, it is an amazing car.
- 49:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: Um is isn't there I couldn't figure out if this was if Spongebob had because Spongebob has a line that's you don't need a license to drive a sandwich.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: Um at one point they they drive like a Krabby I might be in the SpongeBob movie, and they're they're getting into like a Krabby Patty mobile, and he's like, You don't need a license to drive a sandwich.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: And when they see the good burgermobile, they make a similar joke, I feel like, where they're like Interesting.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: And it I I couldn't help but wonder if um Well this came before Spongebob.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: So I was like, was Spongebob alluding to because they're both um Nickelodeon.
- 49:51SPEAKER_01: They're both Nick, yeah.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: I I mean maybe I don't know.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: Two burgermobiles, two burger cars, two burger mobilies, yeah.
- 49:58unknown: Yeah.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: The only two I've seen.
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: I'd love to see more.
- 50:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bring those back instead of the instead of the jobsters.
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: I wish I missed the 90s and how like everyone just loved hamburgers.
- 50:15SPEAKER_02: Like it was so simple.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Like we just liked hamburgers and seeing them and hearing about them, and I don't know.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: It was just such a simple time.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: It was now hamburgers are so, so I mean, controversial.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: Nobody really cares about hamburgers anymore.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: I don't have anything to add to that.
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: Um it's the grand opening of Mondo Burger, uh-huh, and there's a full record for it, like it's a premiere.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's music.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: There's music, yeah.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: And they make it this whole big thing, and because of that, um they're using I guess they're using like all the power because it cuts out the power to Good Burger.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: And Good Burger has like no business, so they're just like, oh, let's just go home.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: They're very sad.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: Um but instead of that, they um like Dexter and Ed hang out on the roof, I think.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Uh or is that later?
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: That might be later.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: Because I feel like don't Dexter and Ed hang out on the roof after they decide to on this the new sauce.
- 51:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, you're right, sorry.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 51:32SPEAKER_02: Um it's like I have the notes.
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: They but basically what happens?
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: I guess they go home and then like just this is the next scene then, because uh the next scene I've got written down is like they one of them gets their hands on a Mondo burger and they start comparing them.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, and they like feed it to a dog and the dog doesn't like it.
- 51:56SPEAKER_02: Or is that later?
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: That's later as well.
- 51:59SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: Um, because this is where Dexter realizes Ed was the guy that uh cut in front of him caused him to crash.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: So he gets into a big argument with him, and then basically Ed's like oblivious to anything going on, and he's like starts doing this like grape thing, puts his grape.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: And he's like, I'm grape nose boy.
- 52:21SPEAKER_02: Grape noseboy, another very Nickelodeon in the 90s joke.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: And then of course he eats the grapes after he puts them in his nose.
- 52:30SPEAKER_01: You gotta yeah, and Dexter ends up looking like forget it, like it's not even worth it.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: You know, you're not even aware of what's going on.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: That will save the institution of Good Burger.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's a jar of sauce, and he gets it on Dexter.
- 52:52SPEAKER_01: Dexter tries it and he's like, This is delicious.
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: You made it yourself, and he gets everyone else to try it, and then suddenly they're like, Good burger's gonna be back in business, we're gonna make this sauce and call it Ed's special sauce.
- 53:04SPEAKER_01: Um and this is where it gets a bit uh dodgy because Dexter gets uh Ed to sign a contract giving him 80% of any earnings.
- 53:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 53:20SPEAKER_02: Even though at this point Dexter has not really done anything to help with the sauce, it's Ed sauce, and yet Dexter feels he's entitled to because uh Ed is gonna be now making 10 cents off of every burger they saw with the special sauce because he created it, and now Dexter is saying, I need to get a cut of that.
- 53:39SPEAKER_02: Um is not fair.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: And so yeah, basically he's taking most of his money.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: And this is where they go to and sit in the secret place.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: The uh on the roof.
- 53:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they go to the roof, uh, and they have this whole conversation, and Dexter's like starts feeding like friendship with Ed, basically, and like feels Ed's so nice to him and everything that's it's a very sweet scene.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: It is it for all of the like silliness and um like craziness of this movie, there are a lot of like very sweet moments, like when on the roof, when like Dexter's talking about how like his dad wasn't around and all he had was like this uh yo-yo that like lit up to remind him of him.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: Um I I feel like Nickelodeon was really good at that, like doing somehow fitting in these like very like nice moments within truly pure like the rest of it, pure chaos.
- 54:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: Um they get a delivery for Shaq, and he brings he wants to bring Monique along.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: Dexter does.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Monique is another one of the coworkers that he's like Dexter's kind of like um interested in, basically.
- 54:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, he's very he's very interested.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: Um Monique who doesn't really get I I wish there was more of Monique in the film.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: You know, you never really see that resolved.
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: Because she does play the important thing.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 55:08SPEAKER_02: Monique's the only one to stand up for Ed, really.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: Yes, she's the one who's the only one who's really sweet and smart, and you're taking advantage of him.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of yeah, I've I didn't really think about that, though, how it's not how they don't resolve her character as well.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: That's interesting.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they kind of just use her as a tool to like get Yeah, that's a shame.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: Because is that actress, was she from all that?
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: I I don't believe so.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: But she is Kevin Fedline's ex.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: I know that.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 55:42SPEAKER_01: She had a she had a kid with Kevin Fedline pre Britney Spears.
- 55:47SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 55:49SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, the tangled webs wee weave.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Um so that's that's the only way I know her, other than this.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: Um, she's amazing in this movie.
- 56:02SPEAKER_02: She is good in this movie.
- 56:03SPEAKER_02: And I and I wished she was in it more.
- 56:05SPEAKER_02: Every time she was on screen, I was I was like, yes, Monique, you are absolutely 100% correct.
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, they get a delivery for Shaq, and he ends up bringing Dexter ends up bringing Ed along.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: So I guess this isn't other this is the only other delivery moment thinking about it.
- 56:23SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 56:24SPEAKER_01: Um maybe it's all to set up this scene.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, probably.
- 56:28SPEAKER_02: I I'm sure as soon as that Shaq agreed to do it, they were like, alright, how do we reconfigure the whole movie to get him into it?
- 56:34SPEAKER_01: There's really no purpose for the scene other than to start Shaq as a cameo.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Uh but they go there.
- 56:39SPEAKER_02: Shaq doesn't even like love the burger, he's like, it's good.
- 56:42SPEAKER_01: No, he's like, yeah, it's good, and then he's like, he brings Ed pulls out the tomato from his pocket and like slaps it in there.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: Uh just disgusting.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: He's like, You're an odd guy, aren't you?
- 56:53SPEAKER_01: Um that's it, that's the scene.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: Um but this is when Kurt, the evil guy, picks up Ed in his car and um tries to get him to come and work for him.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: Uh but Ed's like not interested at all because he's like not even aware of what's going on.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: No.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Um and so like nothing happens there, and like Dexter, uh not Dexter, Kurt gets furious, basically.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Um and then you find out Ed got Dexter a yo-yo, which is really sweet.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: It's so sweet, and it's I I it's part of this like larger arc they do of Ed's character, where that like he's actually like very smart.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: Like he's like um which I think I don't know, I was very touched by this message of like you don't know about how smart or dumb anyone is, you know.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: It was like he was like, No, I am I'm smart in my own way, and I like am very emotionally intelligent, and I well not just emotionally intelligent, like in the end, I don't wanna I don't want to spoil it before we get there, but like he ends up doing something really smart, and it's it's nice this message of like everybody has their own strengths, and you can't judge someone based on yeah, he gets him theofy.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, this is when they send so they send in like this this woman, Roxanne, to kind of like seduce Ed and try and get the Carmen Electra's character uh to get her to seduce Ed to get the recipe for the sauce.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: Yes, Carmen Electra and Ed and Monique and Monique and Dexter Dexter go on a double date.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: On a double date, yeah.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: And it's the it's wild.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: They go for they go to play mini golf and he like knocks her out with the ball.
- 58:49SPEAKER_02: Um hits her square in the forehead.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: Um makes her fall on her ass at one point.
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: Um then she like walks in the next day with like crutches and she's like.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: Even though she never really hurt her legs, seemingly, but she does have crutches.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: True, that she only got hit in the head.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:11SPEAKER_02: Not only, but like I feel like that's a very Nickelodeon thing.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: It's like no matter the injury, like they have crutches to show that they were.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know the crutches.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: But she's still got like a like a a dress that you would wear on a night out as she goes to.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes, and like her hair is all messed up for reasons that don't totally make sense.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: Um she's furious because she did not get the secret recipe out of it and she could not seduce that.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: Um, but while all that's going on, Dexter and Mon Monique share a kiss.
- 59:43SPEAKER_01: Um the most like kids kid-friendly kiss you can imagine.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Um and then but the next day, he's like given her her his coat uh to wear, and he she he like left it with her by accident, and she finds the contract in there and gets like really angry and she's like, I'm I'm not interested in you anymore, basically.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Um so they like he goes and sits outside with Ed and they're talking and they're like throwing uh it's the dog barking.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: There's a dog barking.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: Now the dog is here.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Now it's a dog barking, yeah.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: The dog Because this is how they realise to go uh because they start throwing they start throwing the Mondo burger and the dog's not interested at all.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: So they throw a good burger, yeah, and he eats the dog eats it.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: They're like, what the hell is in this Mondo burger?
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're like something wrong with it.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: And then comes the most 90s kids part of all they dress up as they dr they dr they dress up as women uh as as elderly women, not elder not even elderly, but like middle-aged women they dress up as and to sneak in to Mondo Burger for reasons that are unclear.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah, they don't really seem to have a plan.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_02: Their plan is that they will dress up as elderly women and then go figure out what's going on.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_02: Like they don't really have anything other than that.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: They're like, we're gonna have these awesome outfits, we're gonna do fun voices, and once we get there, we'll figure it out.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_01: But you get you this is the point where you get Keenan Keenan finally gets to pretend like to be like ridiculous.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is his one moment to deal a character.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: So he starts like um pretending that he needs water.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: It's like water, water water.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: It's just going crazy.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_01: And so they like while that all that's going on, they they they find that um someone's been put they've they find that they've been putting illegal chemicals into the burgers, basically.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: Yes, they've been putting a little drop of I don't remember what exactly it's called, but it makes the burgers really big.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: It seems to be alluding to like GMOs or uh Yeah.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Essentially, yeah.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: Also, those like the funny thing is those burgers look disgusting.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_02: They do.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_02: They don't look like they're do not look disgusting.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: Like when when um when Ed is like looking at the burger meat, uh, it like it's so red, like it's so pink, and it looks like styrofoam.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_02: Like it does not look like no burger meat at all.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: It reminds me kind of do you remember that other Nickelodeon show that was like puppets and it was about burgers?
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_02: It was not on for very long, it was very scary to me.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: Wait, what was it called?
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_02: It was called like oh my gosh, wait, hold on.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_02: Now I like need to know Nickelodeon, puppet, burger.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: I'm sure someone is listening right now and they're like, Mr.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: Meady.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_02: Do you remember this?
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: What is that?
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: I have no memory of that.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_02: It it was a uh uh it was Nickelodeon, right?
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: Um I've got to look up Mr.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_01: Measey.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, it was Nickelodeon's show, and it was with puppets, and it was about like people that worked at this burger store in a mall called Mr.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_02: Meady, and like the puppets were really scary.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: They look horrifying.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_02: It was it was a terrifying show, but I remember in that show also like the burgers always looked really gross and like really red.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_02: Um this was oh yeah, this was 2005 and 2009, so a little a little later.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: Um but anyway, the burgers in this movie kind of reminded me of Mr.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: Meaty, which was a show that scared me when I was younger.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_01: This looks horrifying.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: Um It was.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: Had they ever made yeah, I can see this burger now.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: It does not look nice.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_01: Uh um, but basically they they but they get caught essentially.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: So they get sent to somehow they get sent to an is an insane asylum.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: Yes, called like it's called It's called something so it's like demented uh or like uh something demented something.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: Um what's that even the correct term for that now?
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_02: Uh I think like a mental hospital.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: Demented hills is what it's called in the movie.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_00: Oh well.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: Um the part where they get sent to the like mental hospital is the part A, the part that I did not remember at all.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_02: I I I guess I've got to be a little bit more.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_02: Oh really?
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_00: I've got a clear memory of that.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: I was watching this and I was like, oh my goodness, I cannot believe that this is like a big part of this movie.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_02: Because yeah, it's it's unclear also whatever connection the evil Mondo Burger guy has to this asylum that he was able to just like he was like, I know exactly where I'll send you, and then all of a sudden they're being taken to like a mental institution.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: It's like what how?
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: Um but they get sent basically they get sent there, and uh Ed meets this this girl called Heather.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, enter Linda Cartellini.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: Linda Cartellini's character, her first ever movie.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: Um he like becomes friendly with her.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: She's like she's like in love with him, I guess.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: Another character who's not really like resolved.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_01: No, she's there for that scene.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: That's about it.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, they get to this mental institution and uh Oh yeah, while that while all that's going on Yeah, while all that's going on, Otis, the old man, um we haven't even assumed, yeah.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_02: But there's I mean there's an old man named Otis who works at Goodburger, and he wait, why is he at why is he there?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_01: He's at no, he's at Goodburger first, and he's working.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Um but they break in and while he's still while he's there, like and um I guess he's like cleaning the bigger.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Mondo Burger break into Goodburger to try and steal the source, and he's there and uh he tries to stop them, and he get he ends up getting sent there to the asylum as well.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_01: This is when Ed starts to dance at this asylum.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and George Clinton is there.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: George Clinton's in it, yeah.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: They play George Clinton's song and he's in it, like dancing with them.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_02: It's George Clinton and Lynn.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_02: Let's go to Borbelini, and there's a dance scene with mental patience.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: It does not make any sense.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_02: But it is fun.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_01: It's a fun sequence, but it has no It's like fully choreographed.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_02: For some reason, Keenan doesn't do the dance.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: But Ed does it.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: I keep calling them Keenan and Ed.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_02: Dexter and Ed.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_01: But they basically they they manage to like break out because while all that's going on, they like distract it's basically a distraction, and they get the big guy to throw them out the window.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: Originally thinking he was going to break the window, but they he breaks it by throwing them out.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: I feel like second to like dressing like male characters in drag, getting thrown out a window.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: It's a very big Nickelodeon comedy thing to do.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: Something you would never see anywhere in your life, but like No.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, getting cartoonishly like tossed through a window or jumping through a window.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_02: I know there they do a joke in in this movie too where like uh like the first I think Keenan and the old guy get thrown through a window, and then Kel, instead of jumping through the open window, jump crashes through a new window.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: That's very fun.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_01: It is very fun.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: Um but they then they steal an ice cream truck.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_01: Um and they start throwing all the ice creams at the Mondo Burger people, at the people chasing them.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_03: Um chase scene.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: They managed to like get back just in time to stop.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, because basically Mondo Burger poisoned the sauce now.
- 1:07:56SPEAKER_02: Umger has poisoned the Good Burger sauce so that people will stop going to Goodburger and they have to there's And Otis is the only one that knows this at this point when he tells them that's which is what yeah, which is why they have to sneak out.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_02: That's why they stole Otis, of course.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: That's why they're in a rush to get back.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: Um they basically they uh Yeah, they're gonna be.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_02: There's like these women in the in Goodburger who are like about to eat the burger and have to get back before one of them does.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: And they do.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_01: Ed Ed tackles one of them.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: Um also another thing, um, specifically the word, I feel like Nickelodeon loves the word elderly.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_02: They're like, they're like, I have to help the elderly woman.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_02: Like they love to talk about like elderly woman.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: Like, what is that elderly woman doing?
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: I feel like that is a thing.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_02: They do it in this movie.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: They're like, they're like, the elderly, you fell on an elderly person when he like crashes into her.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe it's maybe it's like a word they have to use uh instead of like yeah, I guess old or something like that.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_02: I feel like they think it's so funny to talk about like who's that elderly lady?
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's more of like they do it a lot in iCarly, I feel like.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_01: Um I've never seen iCarly.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_02: You've never seen any iCarly?
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm too old for it.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
- 1:09:19SPEAKER_02: Oh gosh.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: Um I would have been like, I don't know, what year did it start?
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_02: It must have started in probably like 2008, maybe?
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_02: I might be way off.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: Um iCarly started 2007, so I was 18.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_02: No, I was close.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_02: Wow, yeah.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: I was like not yeah, I was I was starting university, I was not watching iCarly.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_01: Um but basically they they get back in time, they stop it, and then they sneak into Mondo Burger again, but this time uh this time they're business.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: Now they basically Ed overfills the burgers with the chemical.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: Um which was not the original plan.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_02: He kind of gets there and he takes because they only put one drop of the chemical usually onto each burger, and he he like pours a whole bunch into the vat of gross red meat.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_01: Which causes them to basically like to explode and everything.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_01: And uh the Mondo Burger guys are like, oh well, you just got empty cans now, what are you gonna do with that?
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_01: And what it what is it that Ed says was his plan?
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Like, what does he say?
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_02: Because it's something So in the end he says that he knew if if it's some convoluted thing where he was like, I knew I had to pour all of it into the meat because if I just gave them um if I just had the can full of um the chemical, they could say that I had planted it or something.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_02: It this is the part where there it's the proof that he's actually really smart because he thought through this plan as he was doing it.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, and the police come and they handcuff the evil blonde guy.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_02: Um it's it's beautiful.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_01: Uh he gets arrested, and then uh Dexter tears up the contract, says, Don't worry about it.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_01: And Ed's like, okay, fine.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_01: He's even like he's not even like and uh Ed thinks that that thinks by telling tearing up the contract, that's that's Keenan's uh or Dexter saying goodbye, and he's like, I'm not going anywhere, I'm just oh yeah, I'm just like ending the contract.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Oh, okay, well, you still be my friend, he's like, Yeah, of course.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_02: It's very nice, yeah, like how much Ed loves being Dexter's friend.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: Um and then it just ends with the classic line, which it opened with, which is welcome to Goodburger, home with a good burger.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_02: Just how it started.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: It was surprisingly satisfying that it ended on the exact same shot.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_02: Um I had forgotten that it did that.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, but yeah, like we said, there's not a lot of um Oh, so also he pays like Dexter pays off like half the money at that point.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_02: Oh, well, because we forgot to say, um, his teacher's car ends up getting crushed by the there's a big burger that sits on top of Mondo Burger and it falls off as all the meat explodes out of the building and it crushes the car.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: Um this poor man who was like just trying to give give Dexter a break, now his car is completely destroyed.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_02: Um and instead of instead of helping him move the burger off the car, uh Dexter just get hands over the money that he has and he's like, Well, this is what I've got.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_02: Sorry, your car's destroyed now.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, that's that's the end of the movie.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_01: Um that's that.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: That's that.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: So um what other than like what we've talked about, what is it that you um love so much about the movie itself?
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_02: I think I mean I think the main thing that I love about it is just that it's allowed to be so like, and I feel like I don't know, I feel like there's like a silliness to it that's just so fun that you don't get in a lot of movies.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_02: Like, I I mean I feel like it the the reason it's so like negatively reviewed is because it if you don't like if you're not like along for the ride, you're not gonna like it.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_02: But if you are along for the ride, it's just so much fun the whole time.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_02: And it's so also and I think this movie had a relatively large budget.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: Um and it seems like they spent every penny on just like the most ridiculous props you could ever see in your life.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_02: It's so colorful, it's so colorful.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_02: You could watch it with no sound and still be very entertained.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_01: What do you think the budget is for this out of interest?
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_01: Because I just looked it up.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_02: I'm worried that I remember the exact number.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_02: I think it's like nine million.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_01: Nine million.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: I seem very low.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_02: I did my research.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_02: It seems low.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know a lot about movie budgets.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_01: Quest 23 million.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_02: Is that good?
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, for a 9 million budget, that's good.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_01: It's decent.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_01: For a kid's movie, that's decent.
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_01: Um 9 million is not a huge budget, but for what they did with it, it's pretty impressive.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_02: I I think so.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_02: As someone who doesn't know a lot about movie budgets, it sounds impressive to me.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_01: Um I wonder if they also got George Clinton in it so they could have the song.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: Probably.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_02: I I would love I wish they had recorded all of the meetings where they were trying to convince these celebrities to be uh in the film.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_02: I wish more celebrities did more children's film cameos.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_02: I'm sure they do, I just don't watch a lot of uh these movies anymore.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: One thing I forgot to mention completely, which seems ridiculous now, is like this movie has on Rotten Tomatoes, it's 33%.
- 1:15:05SPEAKER_01: Um so it is low.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_01: Um it's lower than I was expecting it to be.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's like um the audience is 63.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_02: So that also seems a little lower than I would think.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would have thought that'd be higher because I don't know people that everyone I know likes this movie.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_01: But I don't know if this is because of my age.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to imagine being a critic and like it seems so I feel like anyone who has an understanding of movies would watch this film and be like, oh yeah, it's meant to be ridiculous.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_01: And it is and it's a good kid's movie, that's all you it's just so funny to me that it's rated so low.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm just imagining these people being like, this doesn't make sense, and it's not funny to me.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_02: Like, huh?
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_01: Uh it's it's strange.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at the reviews and they're just it's clearly people who just don't understand it.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_01: It's just people going, Oh, it's so silly, and it's because of that I don't like it.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they don't get it.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which is a shame because it's a really fun movie, and I I do suggest like I don't know, I can't imagine watching it at the same time.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_01: I can't imagine if you're an adult watching this for the first time.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_02: No, it doesn't mean that you have to put on, I feel like at a party or you know, like have a screening of it.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_02: Like, I would have loved to see like a rowdy screening of Goodburger, you know, like I could see like if a movie theater did that, that'd be so fun.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_02: Like where you could like yell at the screen or like bring food and stuff.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_02: Like, um, I actually saw while I was like looking into Goodburger stuff, um Drew Barrymore, when she was uh I guess trying to promote her talk show last summer, had a movie night where she like watched Goodburger and made a burger which made me very happy.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: Um that's so funny.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_02: Uh you never know what Drew is gonna do next, but it it made me very happy that she's gonna be.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_01: Um okay, so if we uh do you have any final thoughts on this, or should we move on to the last segment?
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_02: I think I'm ready to do the last segment.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_02: I think my final thought is that I love this movie and the critics were wrong.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_02: Um and it made me want a hamburger very badly.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_01: Did did you get one?
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_02: Not yet.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: The only thing I've eaten since watching this movie is cereal.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_02: I watched it after dinner last night and I've had breakfast this morning.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_02: Which is not scratching that itch.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: Go go get your burger today.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:17:42SPEAKER_01: So the final segment is the reverse.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: So do you have a movie that's uh well reviewed and loved by crit critics and fans that you think is a bad movie?
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_02: I do have one.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't I actually didn't look it in my mind it's very well reviewed, but I haven't actually looked at the numbers.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_01: Um I can tell you.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_02: So in whenever it came out, it must have been 2013, I was finishing up high school.
- 1:18:12SPEAKER_02: And for basically an entire year of my life, I made it my entire personality that I hated the movie Boyhood.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_01: That just came up recently as well, surprisingly.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_02: Did it really?
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's so interesting.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_02: I did not like boyhood, and I still don't.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_01: So you you you hated it right off from the start.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_02: I no, I I think like I thought it was an interesting conceit, like, to to obviously like it is but No, I mean when you first saw when you first watched it, you hated it.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_02: I did, yeah.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_02: I hated it.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_02: I think it was because I mean I was the the movie is about a character who's like about to graduate well like he it ends with him graduating high school.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the movie's about a lot.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_02: The movie's about a lot.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_02: It's not necessarily just about a high school graduation, yeah.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_02: But it's kind of his ex it's his his whole boyhood, like it's his whole life, obviously.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_02: And it ends as he graduates high school and he goes off to college, and um I and I and at the time I was graduating high school and going off to college, and I just felt very like it seemed like the movie was trying to be this like relatable, universal experience of time and growing up and what that means, and blah blah blah blah.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I just don't like this didn't feel real to me.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_02: I thought Patricia Arquette was great and it deserved the award.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_02: I think she would get like best.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_01: She won supporting actress, yeah.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_02: And she she I agree was great, but like I just thought the acting for so much of it for so many of the other people was so bad.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_02: And I thought, like, for a movie that's supposed to show I remember there's one specific scene where he's in this shed and he's drinking with these other boys.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_02: Um and it just I was like, this feels like aliens were trying to make a movie about what it's like to be a teenage boy.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_02: Like, I was like, this does not feel real to me at all.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_01: Um that's kind of what you I guess that's what you get with like making a movie across the space of 12 years.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_01: Like you really run the risk of like when you hire a child actor.
- 1:20:21unknown: I know.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_01: And also it was kind of like they didn't have they were just kind of like making it up as they were going along.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_01: So that's another downside to it of like you you're gonna end up with something that's not it's just yeah.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_01: I I love I loved it at the time and I've grown to like dislike it.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_02: I I feel like I know, I feel like now it's a pretty popular opinion actually that like it wasn't that good.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_02: But I remember it doesn't hold up.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_02: I feel like also at the time, that was around when I was getting very into kind of being like performatively feminist.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_02: Like I liked to be the one to be like, I actually think this was bad for women.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_02: It's like I was like a little white girl in 2013 and that was important to me.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_02: Um which I am still a feminist, but hopefully not in that way.
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_02: But I was like making a movie about a boy and it's stupid to me.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_02: My argument was like not very good.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_01: Um one other thing that I find quite fun, not funny, but like interesting about it is that uh you were talking about the acting and everything.
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_01: Um the new daughter in it is um actually the director's daughter, and she stopped wanting to be in it after a certain point.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it already comes across.
- 1:21:39unknown: Yes.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, that is really funny.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_02: I didn't actually know that she stopped wanting to be in it.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_01: She didn't want to be in it after a certain point.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_02: She's like, Dad, I'm like a person and I don't want to be a character in your weird movie.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: It's like, do I have to keep coming back every year?
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_01: This is so exhausting.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_02: It seems exhausting.
- 1:21:58SPEAKER_02: It's a weird thing to do.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think as a technical achievement, it's great.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_01: Other than that, it's not a good movie.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I agree.
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_02: I think it is like it's cool.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_02: It's cool that he did it, but I was like, it's not like best picture to me.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_02: I think No.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_01: But it also I don't think the movie that ended up winning Best Picture What was it?
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_01: Was Best Picture Birdman.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_02: Wow, Birdman.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_01: Which I hate.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_02: You hate Birdman?
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_01: I hate Birdman.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_02: Why do you hate it?
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: You don't you don't like the?
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_01: I think it's so pretentious.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_02: It is, it was pretentious.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_01: Oh I think it's so pretentious.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_01: I hate it.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's funny.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_02: I forgot that that was the year.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_02: What was in the category?
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_02: What was what was the best picture nominees that year?
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_02: Now I want to be taking that.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_02: Um got oh, was Whiplash?
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_01: I love Whiplash.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_01: I love whipping.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_01: Although I don't know if it's best picture.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_02: Grand Budapest Hotel seemingly.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_02: Um what what year was this?
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_01: This would have been 2015.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_01: 2016 2015's uh list.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_02: 2015.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_02: Oscar Noms.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_02: I love the power of the internet.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, here we go.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_02: I can find out anything anytime I want.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_01: This would have been from memory, otherwise.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_02: Um my gosh.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_02: Wait, who Eddie Redmane won Best Actor for the Theory of Everything?
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_02: Wow, this is the year I mean Sniper came out.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_01: Selma was great.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_01: Selma could have won.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_01: Uh I like Grand Budapest Hotel and I like Whitclash.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_02: I will say I love the movie Grand Budapest Hotel, but I don't think I've ever watched the whole thing without falling asleep.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_02: It starts and I'm like, this is so good.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_03: Wow, you must really love it.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_02: Well, it's one of the few movies where I haven't been able to remain conscious through the whole thing, but I still think it's good.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's the like I would rather it won over boyhood or birdman, but I don't at the same time, I don't think it's probably best picture, but I still love it.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_02: I think Birdman, I think you're probably right.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_02: I I liked Birdman when I first saw it, but I've never ever wanted to watch it again.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_02: Like I watched it in theaters when it came out, and I was like, great, I'm done with that movie.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_02: And I kind of have not thought about it again since you brought it up just now.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_01: I don't think anyone's thought about it.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_01: Again, but I don't I also don't think about boyhood until it gets like the last two times I thought about boyhood were the the times it came up on the podcast, and before that it's been like years.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_01: Um but that's so weird that like in the space of like the last I don't even know, like maybe the last like four episodes that has it's gone up twice.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I can't remember the last time I I don't remember who said it now.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_02: It seems like our collective consciousness just remembered boyhood and like did a huge cringe and now no one can stop thinking about it.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, now I'm gonna keep thinking about boyhood and uh um but yeah, um thank you so much for coming on to the podcast.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_02: Of course, it was so fun, and it was so fun to have an excuse to watch Goodburger.
- 1:25:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you so much for doing that.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_01: Thank you for thank you for picking a movie I love as well.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_01: That I guess is I got to enjoy it again.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_02: Um it seems like sometimes it's a bit of a chore for on your end.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_01: Well, there are there are definitely movies like that, but I I always enjoy talking to the guests anyway, so how can we um find you online?
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_01: Did you have anything you want to promote at the moment?
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_02: Oh fun.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_02: Um I don't think I have anything specifically that I want to promote at the moment, um, but I write a lot of comedy and satire stuff, and so you can find me on Instagram and Twitter at at May of Dunnigan, my full name, M-A-E-V-E-D-U-N I-G-I-N.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_02: And if you live in New York, I do a live show.
- 1:26:01SPEAKER_02: I now it is restarting live uh post-COVID.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_02: Um and we're gonna be coming back.
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_02: This actually is breaking news on June 30th, me and my comedy partner, Kelsey Harper.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_02: So if you live in New York City and you want to come to that, it will be at Star Bar in Bushwick.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_01: Amazing.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_01: Uh June 30th, what what time?
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_02: That we actually don't know.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_01: It'll be at not that I'm gonna I'm gonna fly over to watch it.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, please do come on over.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, that'll be the day.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_02: We it's actually such breaking news that we still don't know exactly what time it's going to be.
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_02: But it is happening.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_02: It's on 2 30th, it's a Wednesday.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, good luck with that.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_01: That'll be really fun.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're very excited.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_02: We haven't obviously done like a show in front of people in like over a year, so it's very exciting.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my last show was in person, was in March uh last year.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, wow, god.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_02: It's been a while.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_01: Uh so it'll be very interesting when I eventually go back.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_01: But yeah, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_02: Uh thank you for having me.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_01: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_01: If you enjoyed it, please leave us a review and make us a like you can make a movie.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_01: And I'll see you next week for more movies at quick.
