Latest / The Gathering Line / Guernsey Egress Tightens as Inland Crude Builds
Transcript
- 0:00Good morning.
- 0:01Here's what matters before Monday's scheduling call.
- 0:04Markets are closed, so everything below is Friday's settle.
- 0:07Global first.
- 0:09Brent settled Friday, October twenty third, between one hundred sixteen dollars and
- 0:13seventy two cents and one hundred sixteen ninety one.
- 0:16That's up three fifty five, or three point one four percent on the day,
- 0:20and up over six percent on the week, the highest since June twenty twenty two.
- 0:25The driver is the U.S.
- 0:26and Iran.
- 0:27U.S.
- 0:27leadership publicly denied active negotiations, while reports point to contingency
- 0:32strike planning after the midterms.
- 0:34That's reporting, not confirmation.
- 0:36Iran's military leadership says it's ready for asymmetric warfare.
- 0:40Houthi strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure continue, the State Department ordered
- 0:44nonessential personnel out, and Aramco told Dhahran headquarters staff to work
- 0:48remotely.
- 0:49OPEC plus quotas are unchanged going into the November first ministerial.
- 0:54JODI data via OilPrice has Saudi crude output holding at six point two four million
- 0:59barrels per day in August, with exports of four point four five million supported by
- 1:03domestic inventory draws, not more drilling.
- 1:06The number that matters for us is freight.
- 1:08RBN reports supertanker fixtures from the Gulf Coast to Asia above eighty million
- 1:13dollars.
- 1:14Goldman puts waterborne crude freight near twenty dollars a barrel,
- 1:18against roughly three historically.
- 1:20That wedge is why inland light sweet isn't capturing Brent's strength.
- 1:25The Strategic Petroleum Reserve sits at two hundred eighty two point seven million
- 1:29barrels, the lowest since nineteen eighty two.
- 1:32North America.
- 1:33November W C S at Hardisty settled Friday at twenty five fifty five under W T I,
- 1:39per CalRock via Reuters.
- 1:41That's thirty five cents wider than Thursday's twenty five twenty under,
- 1:45and implies about seventy seven seventy two outright.
- 1:49The widening ties to heavy freight premiums and weak Gulf Coast heavy fuel oil
- 1:54margins.
- 1:55Canadian export trunklines are near ninety three percent utilization.
- 1:59Trans Mountain is throttled near sixty percent, about four hundred twenty five
- 2:03thousand barrels per day, because tanker freight has shut the arbitrage across the
- 2:07Pacific.
- 2:08That pushes surplus heavy south into the Midcontinent.
- 2:12Enbridge's Express is at one hundred percent, two hundred eighty thousand barrels
- 2:16per day, into Casper and Guernsey.
- 2:19Mexico, nothing material.
- 2:20United States.
- 2:22W T I settled Friday at one hundred three twenty seven, up three eighty,
- 2:26or three point eight two percent.
- 2:29No new E I A report since last episode, but the latest one matters for the Rockies.
- 2:34Commercial crude fell three point zero six one million barrels to four hundred
- 2:38twelve point five one seven million, a bigger draw than the consensus one point
- 2:43three.
- 2:44But that draw was coastal.
- 2:45The Gulf Coast fell five point oh four one million on storm shut ins,
- 2:49while inland stocks built.
- 2:51PADD four, the Rockies, added seven hundred eighty six thousand barrels to twenty
- 2:56three point four nine six million.
- 2:58Cushing built one million to twenty seven point six, its fourth straight weekly
- 3:03build.
- 3:04Production was thirteen point two seven million barrels per day,
- 3:07and refinery utilization eased to ninety three point four percent.
- 3:11Baker Hughes held flat at six hundred three rigs, up fifty three from a year ago.
- 3:17Oil rigs rose one to four sixty, gas fell one to one thirty two.
- 3:22Triple digit W T I with no rig additions is capital discipline.
- 3:27Don't underwrite volume growth off this price.
- 3:30On deals, Devon is selling its Eagle Ford assets to Crescent for four point two two
- 3:35billion in cash.
- 3:37Antitrust reviews remain active on Enbridge's two point five five billion dollar
- 3:41purchase of Tallgrass crude assets, including seventy five percent of Pony Express,
- 3:47and on Hess Midstream's roughly two hundred million dollar buy of Chevron's D J
- 3:51Basin gathering plus a twenty percent stake in Saddlehorn.
- 3:55Uinta Basin.
- 3:56Yellow wax wellhead postings hold at ten to fourteen dollars under Cushing.
- 4:01Those are indicative desk quotes, not published prices.
- 4:05Delivered Gulf Coast waxy trades at W T I plus three twenty,
- 4:09about one oh six forty seven.
- 4:11Coiled, insulated railcar freight runs sixteen to eighteen dollars,
- 4:15so the netback is eighty eight forty seven to ninety forty seven,
- 4:19twelve eighty to fourteen eighty under Cushing.
- 4:22Spot rail is shut and underwater against Salt Lake postings.
- 4:26The five Salt Lake refineries are near their ceiling of about eighty thousand
- 4:29barrels per day of waxy crude.
- 4:32Rail loadings average about one hundred fifteen thousand, all committed under
- 4:35minimum volume contracts, with spot racks idle.
- 4:39Wildcat's Helper terminal is expanding toward one hundred thousand.
- 4:43Energy Transfer's Price River rail terminal is in Utah state review,
- 4:47targeting a fourth quarter decision.
- 4:49On the Uinta Basin Railway, no track has been laid.
- 4:52Per the desk brief, the D C Circuit remanded the approval to the Surface
- 4:56Transportation Board in October.
- 4:59The approval stays in place, but the Board owes deeper review of downline accident
- 5:04and wildfire risk along the Colorado River corridor, plus downstream emissions.
- 5:09The Forest Service right of way permit stays paused until the Board's supplemental
- 5:13order.
- 5:15Veren, Ovintiv, Scout, XCL, Uinta Wax, Berry, Caerus and SM Energy
- 5:22are all running steady programs.
- 5:24Bakken.
- 5:25The Director's Cut holds state output near one point one five three million barrels
- 5:29per day, thirty three rigs, ninety six percent gas capture,
- 5:33and about one hundred thirty million cubic feet per day flared.
- 5:36Dakota Access is full at its effective seven hundred fifty thousand barrels per day,
- 5:41with walk up tariffs at nine seventy five against committed rates of five sixteen to
- 5:45seven fifty six.
- 5:47Kinder Morgan's Double H conversion permanently removed sixty five to eighty eight
- 5:51thousand barrels per day of crude takeaway, pushing Williston barrels onto Dakota
- 5:55Access and Bridger and Belle Fourche.
- 5:57All in rail to the coasts runs ten to fifteen dollars before car leases and
- 6:01destination rack tariffs.
- 6:03Spot is closed.
- 6:04Chevron drops one Williston rig by December, three to two, to drill longer laterals,
- 6:09and Hess Midstream sees twenty twenty seven gathering dipping about five percent.
- 6:13Chord, Continental, Devon, and ConocoPhillips are steady.
- 6:17Powder River.
- 6:19Gathering capacity upstream is sufficient, and Anschutz, Continental,
- 6:23Devon, EOG and Peak are drilling disciplined schedules.
- 6:28The constraint is downstream, at the receipt manifolds feeding the Guernsey headers.
- 6:33Plains continues integrating the Silver Creek system.
- 6:36Now Gernzee, the section that matters most.
- 6:39Guernsey Sweet was flat over the last day or two at eighty five cents over Cushing,
- 6:44roughly one oh four twelve outright on Friday's W T I.
- 6:49Clearbrook trades one fifty to two ten under Gernzee, or sixty five cents to one
- 6:54twenty five under Cushing.
- 6:56Inflows are heavy.
- 6:58Express delivers two hundred eighty thousand barrels per day of Canadian crude into
- 7:02Casper and Gernzee, and Bridger and Belle Fourche feed over three hundred thousand
- 7:07of Bakken.
- 7:08Egress is the problem.
- 7:10Pony Express is constrained to about two hundred thirty thousand barrels per day out
- 7:14of Gernzee, against a four hundred thirty thousand system nameplate,
- 7:19which the desk attributes to limits at the Midcontinent refineries,
- 7:22McPherson, El Dorado and Ponca City, and to upstream proration.
- 7:27Platte, at one hundred forty five thousand eastbound to Wood River and Patoka,
- 7:32is heavily prorated.
- 7:33Saddlehorn and Grand Mesa are full of D J barrels headed to Cushing.
- 7:38With December nominations locked, this week is execution.
- 7:42First, uncommitted barrels shut out of the prorated southbound lines have two
- 7:46choices.
- 7:47Take the one fifty to two ten discount to clear northeast to Clearbrook,
- 7:51or pay for storage in Gernzee tankage.
- 7:54Second, batch segregation.
- 7:56Heavy Canadian crude moving on Express into Casper and Gernzee creates real gravity
- 8:01and sulfur contamination risk at shared manifold headers, and an off spec rejection
- 8:06at a refinery is a serious liability.
- 8:09Third, enforce the minimum volume deficiency charges against shippers whose
- 8:13nominated volumes were cut by downstream apportionment.
- 8:16That's contract execution, not a negotiation.
- 8:20Longer term, Bridger's proposed five hundred fifty thousand barrel per day,
- 8:24thirty six inch line from the Canadian border to Gernzee, targeting July twenty
- 8:29twenty seven, can't be absorbed by the hub without more Pony Express egress.
- 8:34That's why the Tallgrass and Bridger joint tariff open seasons matter.
- 8:39The August open seasons on Pony Express and Seahorse, which began August twenty
- 8:43first, used existing capacity.
- 8:46Per Midstream Calendar, no capacity amount, rates, or results were disclosed,
- 8:51and no expansion was announced.
- 8:53Watch for any follow up.
- 8:55That's the board.
- 8:56Watch Sunday evening's open.
