- 0:08Very important that when we are given the word
- 0:11that we do it. It's one thing to be given it
- 0:14and not do it. That's rebellion. But to be given
- 0:17the word, you must do the word. It's a very important
- 0:20thing. One, it commands us to do it, right? Go
- 0:23and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
- 0:25them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy
- 0:27Spirit. A lot of guys stop at that because they
- 0:29don't like the second part. Teaching them to
- 0:32obey all that I've commanded you. Like a real
- 0:34disciple is one who is obedient. That being said,
- 0:39when we get into Timothy chapter 5, this is a
- 0:44very important command by which God gives to
- 0:48the church that we must do as a church, especially
- 0:52as elders. And so before we do that, I'm going
- 0:54to pray, and then we're going to dig in. Are
- 0:56you guys ready? Father, I want to thank you so
- 0:58much for your goodness and faithfulness. Thank
- 1:00you, Lord, for your word. You are faithful and
- 1:02good. You love the widow. You protect her. And
- 1:08you care for her and you support her and give
- 1:10her all her needs. And you have commanded the
- 1:13church to do the same. We are your body. And
- 1:17the religion that you consider pure and faultless
- 1:20is to care for the orphans and widows in their
- 1:22distress. And to keep oneself from being polluted
- 1:25by the world. To keep ourselves holy. Lord, we
- 1:29praise you and thank you. To you be honor and
- 1:31glory. May the full counsel of your word be spoken.
- 1:35Lord, help me and help us to rightly divide it
- 1:37to see your heart and care for those who have
- 1:42difficulty doing it on their own and have not
- 1:45meant to do it on their own. Lord, we praise
- 1:48you and thank you in Jesus' name. Amen. So I'm
- 1:51going to start off first and foremost by reading
- 1:54something in John chapter 19. Jesus does this
- 1:58same thing. It's interesting when you read it.
- 2:00Chapter 19, verse 28. And this, Jesus knowing,
- 2:05oh, sorry, oh, I did that same thing on first
- 2:08service. It's actually verse 24c. So go there.
- 2:14Verse 24, the last part. So the soldiers did
- 2:17these things by standing by the cross of Jesus,
- 2:20where his mother, his mother's sister, Mary,
- 2:26the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. And when
- 2:30Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he
- 2:33loved standing nearby, he said to his mother,
- 2:37Woman, behold your son. Then he said to the disciple,
- 2:42Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple
- 2:45took her to his own home. Now the question I
- 2:49had asked earlier was, Why, if Jesus has brothers,
- 2:54James and Jude, would Jesus not give the responsibility
- 2:58to his brothers? I mean, after all, that would
- 3:01be what you would consider the Jewish responsibility,
- 3:04is to care for the mother when the mother has
- 3:07no one to care for her. Jesus, being the older
- 3:10brother, is dying. His father has died already.
- 3:15But Jesus doesn't give his responsibility of
- 3:19the mother to James and Jude. We know it's James
- 3:23and Jude. Because they were the ones that wrote
- 3:26James and Jude. Why would he give it to John?
- 3:29And here's why. John was a believer and James
- 3:32and Jude were not. I want you to hear that. The
- 3:35responsibility of the widow is on you, the church.
- 3:40It's on no one else. God has given us that responsibility.
- 3:44That being said, turn to 1 Timothy. So I've already
- 3:49given you the command in James 1 .27. Let's read
- 3:55what God says concerning the widow. Now, Paul
- 3:59gives Timothy some very important things. He
- 4:02starts off in verse 13 of chapter 4, and I'll
- 4:05read that. Verse 13 of chapter 4. Until I come,
- 4:09devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,
- 4:12to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the
- 4:15gift you have, which has been given you by prophecy
- 4:20when the council of elders laid their hands on
- 4:23you. Practice these things, immerse yourself
- 4:25in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep
- 4:30a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.
- 4:34Persist in this, for by doing so you will save
- 4:37both yourself and your hearers. Do not rebuke
- 4:40an older man, but encourage him as you would
- 4:43a father. Younger men as a brother, older women
- 4:47as mothers, and younger women as sisters. in
- 4:52all purity. So let's start off with verse 1 and
- 4:572. Godly leaders are careful to shepherd not
- 5:01only in action, but especially with words. Godly
- 5:06men are leaders and must be careful to shepherd
- 5:09not only in action, but especially in words,
- 5:13and especially those who have been called and
- 5:16ordained as elders. In Leviticus 19 .32, it says
- 5:22it this way. You shall stand up before the gray
- 5:26head and honor the face of an old man, and you
- 5:30shall fear your God. I am the Lord, Leviticus
- 5:3419 .32. You shall stand up. When an older man
- 5:38walks in, you show him honor. You stand up face
- 5:42to face. You give respect to him. I think that's
- 5:46missing today, especially in young people. You
- 5:49hear that, little ones, younger ones, teenagers,
- 5:52young adults? Show the respect. These men have
- 5:55lived life. Give honor. Respect them. Face to
- 6:00face, man to man. That's the idea here. And what
- 6:03he says here concerning Timothy, he says, Timothy,
- 6:05understand he's 19, 20 years old, shepherding
- 6:08a church. And Paul says, Timothy, do not rebuke.
- 6:12Do not chastise. With your words. Though you
- 6:16are a godly man, though you have biblical authority,
- 6:19though you are the shepherd, the under -shepherd
- 6:22of this church, you, Timothy, are not to chastise
- 6:28older men, but encourage him as you would a father.
- 6:33How many of you guys got nasty with your dad?
- 6:36Same thing. I asked everybody else that, and
- 6:39nobody would admit it. Many. It's important you
- 6:42honor these men as you would your father. Younger
- 6:45men as brothers. I mean, brotherhood is important.
- 6:48I know that when you grow up with many brothers
- 6:51and you want to hold on to those relationships
- 6:54and keep them strong. Older women as mothers.
- 6:58It's interesting. I was sharing this earlier.
- 7:01You know, it's really upsetting as a man, as
- 7:03a father. You raise your kids. You teach them
- 7:05football. They get famous. They stand in the
- 7:09camera. And you ask my boy, and all of a sudden
- 7:11he goes, thank you very much. Hi, Mom. What happened
- 7:16to all the work? That's him honoring his mother.
- 7:19She carried him for nine months. You didn't.
- 7:22She dealt with all his sicknesses and his hurts
- 7:25and his scraped knees and his crying and his
- 7:27frustration because he wasn't doing well in school.
- 7:30And all of the times he never listened because
- 7:33we like to climb trees and pick up snakes. And
- 7:37younger women as sisters. Being careful to protect.
- 7:40But do it in all purity, it says. Do it in a
- 7:44sinlessness life. A life that's not characterized
- 7:49as sinful. That is how you should be handling
- 7:52your relationships with older men and younger
- 7:56men and older women and younger women. How we
- 8:00communicate. I will tell you, it's something
- 8:04that I work hard at. My wife will tell you sometimes
- 8:07I screw up. But it is important to me to honor
- 8:11her and to love her and my kids. Godly leaders
- 8:16manage the care of widows and purpose to exhort
- 8:19them to cling to Christ. Fathers of the fatherless,
- 8:24protector of widows is God in his holy habitation,
- 8:29Psalm 68, 5. Do you get that? That where God
- 8:33is, God is the father to the fatherless, and
- 8:37he protects the widow. What's interesting about
- 8:41the word widow, as I said earlier, is men are
- 8:44not widows. Men can't be widows. I know in today's
- 8:48society. When a wife dies, the man goes, I'm
- 8:52a widow. No, you're not. Because a widow means
- 8:55barren, means without care and support, a city
- 8:59with no inhabitants. Men can, to the very last
- 9:03breath of their life, typically take care of
- 9:06themselves. And will suffer through, and some
- 9:09even die doing their work. But not so when it
- 9:12comes to women. Why? Well, I'm sure the feminist
- 9:16movement would say, we can do. Everything a man
- 9:21can do. No, that's not true either. That's a
- 9:26lie. Women can't do everything a man can do.
- 9:28And I will tell you this, men cannot do what
- 9:31women do. When we come home from work, the wife
- 9:35has cleaned the house, cooked dinner for you,
- 9:38managed the kids, educated the children, disciplined
- 9:42the children, went out and played with the children,
- 9:45taught the children the word of God. And you
- 9:48come home to a dinner. And when she's done all
- 9:51this work, you aren't to be sitting watching
- 9:55her work. You need to take over. See, you couldn't
- 9:58do that for 14 straight hours. Women do. And
- 10:04they do it because it's God's given gift to them
- 10:08to be a mother. We read that in chapter 2. So
- 10:12let's go on. Chapter 5, verse 3 through 16. Honor,
- 10:17temeo, to revere or venerate. Honor widows. Kera
- 10:24is the word here. It means barren, without care
- 10:27and support. A city with no inhabitants. Who
- 10:31are truly widows. What does it mean to be truly
- 10:35a widow? A widow who is truly a widow. is one
- 10:40who cannot take care of herself. She's older.
- 10:45Her husband is gone. Her kids are gone. She is
- 10:49left alone. And if she is not taken care of,
- 10:52supported, shepherded, provided for, she will
- 10:56die. Because the man would go out and get all
- 10:59the food and work and bring the money home and
- 11:01then give it to her and she would make it. That's
- 11:04the way it was back then. Now, you go to Chick
- 11:07-fil -A. But in reality, Older women are truly
- 11:11widows. But, it says in verse 4, but if a widow
- 11:16has children or grandchildren, let them first
- 11:20learn to show godliness to their own household.
- 11:23Isn't that interesting? That there's two things
- 11:27here, I think, that we need to be thoughtful
- 11:29and considerate of. First, is that she must...
- 11:32continue to show godliness to her own household,
- 11:35and the children and grandchildren should learn
- 11:38to show godliness to the widow. It means this
- 11:43term, show godliness to their own household,
- 11:46is to act piously, reverently with their family.
- 11:50How many have you seen where their widows and
- 11:54their left And they're wondering, why am I alone?
- 11:58How come nobody loves me? Why is no one caring
- 12:00about me after I've given everything I can to
- 12:03them? What do you think happens? They get bitter,
- 12:06angry. That can't be in the church. And it will
- 12:09not be in this church. So let's keep reading.
- 12:13They must show godliness, act piously, revantly
- 12:17with their family, and to make some return to
- 12:21their parents. You're like, what? So let's say,
- 12:25A woman, her husband dies, and she has a mom
- 12:29and dad. Guess where she should go? She should
- 12:33go back home to her mom and dad because she has
- 12:36no one else now to care for her, to help protect
- 12:39her, to help support her, to give her guidance
- 12:42when she needs it. You're not meant to live life
- 12:45alone. If that was true, then why would God create
- 12:48a helper fit for Adam? We're not meant to be
- 12:51alone. And so this is a very important thing.
- 12:55Make sure or make some return to their parents.
- 12:59Notice it doesn't say all. It says some. Those
- 13:02who cannot take care of themselves. Those who
- 13:06need support. Those who need protection. Especially
- 13:10in those days. For this is pleasing in the sight
- 13:13of God. God is pleased with this. What would
- 13:16the feminine movement say today? You can do it
- 13:18on your own, girl. You're going to be just fine.
- 13:21Go get a job. Okay. It's more than that. Next,
- 13:25it says in verse 5, she who is truly a widow,
- 13:30left all alone, has set her hope on God and continues
- 13:35in supplications. She has no one else. She is
- 13:39left truly alone. There is nobody there for her.
- 13:43She has no family. She can't go home to nobody.
- 13:46She is by herself. And look at what it says.
- 13:49She turns to God as her hope. For widows, this
- 13:54is what I want to give you. Turn to God as your
- 13:57hope. He will take care of you. I promise you
- 14:02that. And when you turn to him, you seek him,
- 14:07you ask him, and you entreat. Lord, you said
- 14:12you would take care of me. And then it says,
- 14:16and prayers, addressing God. God, you are my
- 14:20provider. You are. king. You have a cattle on
- 14:24a thousand hills. You own everything. You know
- 14:27I cannot do this on my own. I need you. That's
- 14:33the idea here. And that's the type of woman this
- 14:36particular widow is. Then he says, but, and she
- 14:40does this night and day, mind you. It's not just
- 14:42when she needs something. She's throwing up supplications
- 14:45and prayers all day long. But, The woman or the
- 14:50widow who is self -indulgent. Spataleo is the
- 14:54word here. It's one who gives oneself to pleasure.
- 14:59She is dead even while she lives. So what happens
- 15:03sometimes with women who lose their husbands
- 15:06if they're young, they give themselves over to
- 15:09pleasures. They self -indulge themselves with
- 15:13things and men. She doesn't realize that the
- 15:17very life giver she has walked away from, the
- 15:21one who would fulfill her pleasures, her needs,
- 15:24her cares, she's now turned to the things that
- 15:28are fleeting and dying, and she lives as if she's
- 15:32dead. That's what it means here. Zeo nesko is
- 15:37the word here, or thnesko, to live without life.
- 15:41You're not going to live for God, you're going
- 15:43to live a... lifeless life. And look what he
- 15:46says here to Timothy. He says, command these
- 15:49things as well, so that they may be without reproach.
- 15:54So that no one can bring an accusation against
- 15:58any of these widows. So that society doesn't
- 16:01say, you're a burden on us. The church takes
- 16:05on that burden. But if anyone does not provide
- 16:08for his relatives, and especially for the members
- 16:11of his own household, He has denied the faith
- 16:15and is worse than an unbeliever. If you know
- 16:18there's a widow in your family, your mother -in
- 16:22-law, your mother, and you don't care for her,
- 16:26you're worse than an unbeliever. That's what
- 16:28it says here. For those who are caring for them,
- 16:33praise God, godly men. Now, for those mothers
- 16:37who refuse, like, no, I've done this all my life.
- 16:42There's nothing you can do. And here it is. You
- 16:44guys ready? So there is a way out for some of
- 16:46you. You can't make your mama do it because that's
- 16:49mama. And this is what it says. Let a widow be
- 16:52enrolled. This word enrolled means choose to
- 16:56be listed for care. Let a widow choose to be
- 17:00listed for care if she's not less than 60 years
- 17:03old or 60 years of age. So if she is 60 years
- 17:08or older, you must allow her, if she chooses,
- 17:12to come for care, care, protection. Why? Because
- 17:18she was a wife of one husband. She has no one
- 17:20else. She also is a woman of a good reputation.
- 17:25She's having a reputation for good works. If
- 17:28she has brought up children, has shown hospitality.
- 17:32Here's the list of good works. Reputation of
- 17:35good works. Brought up children. You hear that,
- 17:38ladies? Keep raising your kids. It's good work.
- 17:42What else does it say? Has shown hospitality.
- 17:46You've been a good hostess. Thank you for caring
- 17:49and sharing. Thank you for ladies' fellowship.
- 17:51These ladies do good work. Look what else it
- 17:54says. Has washed the feet of the saints. Spiritually
- 17:58speaking, they wash our feet all the time. Has
- 18:00cared for the afflicted and has devoted herself
- 18:04to good work. That woman should be cared for.
- 18:08Provided for, protected. There should never be
- 18:11a need. If you can't pay the mortgage, we'll
- 18:14pay it. If you can't feed yourself, we'll feed
- 18:17you. All you have to do is go to caring and counseling
- 18:20and they will take care of you. That's why we
- 18:22have it. Whatever your need is. But look what
- 18:25it says about the next woman. I promise. I'm
- 18:28going to end at 14 because I can't get it all
- 18:30in. Okay? Look what it says here. It's in the
- 18:32next woman. But refuse to enroll younger widows.
- 18:38Ouch. Why? Why can younger widows not be on the
- 18:43list? Here's why. For when their passions, when
- 18:48they want to act on impulse of sexual desire
- 18:52is what this means. It's what it means. Draw
- 18:55them away from Christ. This passion they have,
- 18:58because they're young, they need to live out
- 19:01this impulse to be desired. It draws them away
- 19:05from Christ. Christ is no longer the source.
- 19:08Younger women should not be on the list because
- 19:11what happens is men are the ones that usually
- 19:15come in and take care of the need. You ever thought
- 19:17about that? It's one of the reasons why we drive
- 19:21them to caring and counseling and caring and
- 19:24sharing and ladies' fellowship. We drive them
- 19:27to deaconesses. Very important. We want them
- 19:31to be cared for, but we also want to empower
- 19:34them to live holy. That's the idea here. That's
- 19:37exactly what Paul means here to Timothy. And
- 19:40then he says this. Why do they do this? Why do
- 19:43they desire or why do their passions rule them?
- 19:46Because they want to be married. They don't want
- 19:48to be alone. I can tell you, it's one of the
- 19:50things I've noticed about some of the young widows
- 19:53that I've done ministry to. They don't want to
- 19:55be alone. And then look what it says here. And
- 19:58as a result, and so, verse 12, and so incur condemnation,
- 20:01judgment of God, for having abandoned their former
- 20:05faith. What does that mean? They have abandoned
- 20:08what has been previously reliable, persistently
- 20:12faithful, not pulled away. See, when they are
- 20:16safe, When a woman is secure, when she knows
- 20:20she's provided for, when all her needs are in
- 20:23through the man by which God provides through
- 20:25that man, and he is gone, she wonders what's
- 20:29going to happen with me now. This is what it
- 20:31says next. It says, besides that, they learn
- 20:34to be idlers. They learn to be inactive or at
- 20:37leisure. I will tell you, I've seen this happen.
- 20:40They just give up. I don't want to do anything.
- 20:44They go about. From house to house, it says here.
- 20:48And not only idlers. This idea is they go about
- 20:52the home alone and inactive. Not taking care
- 20:55of her responsibilities. You remember what I
- 20:57said in chapter 2? That she will be saved through
- 21:00childbearing. It's not that she is born again
- 21:03through childbearing. It means that she finds
- 21:05her wholeness as a woman. In being busy doing
- 21:09what women are created to do. Support and help.
- 21:13It's the beauty of... of biblical feminism. It's
- 21:17not the idea that I can run a business or I can
- 21:20be the CEO of a large company, that I can make
- 21:23thousands and thousands of dollars. Guess what
- 21:26you miss out on? You miss out on the rearing
- 21:29of your children and the joy of sharing life
- 21:32with somebody because your life becomes your
- 21:34business. And then it says this, she's not taking
- 21:37care of her responsibilities, which means that,
- 21:40but also gossips. She becomes a babbler. talking
- 21:45and doing silly things. It's true. And busybodies
- 21:48saying what they should not. This word busybodies
- 21:53is neglecting the important things and busy not
- 21:57minding their own business. They get into other
- 21:59people's stuff because they have nothing else
- 22:01to do. Remember, they're just being inactive
- 22:03at home. They're not taking care of their responsibilities.
- 22:06What else do I got to do? Hey, girl, did you
- 22:08hear about this guy? Look, I know this girl.
- 22:11She's with this guy like down the street. It's
- 22:14exactly what happens. She needs to live for Christ,
- 22:17desire him, seek him out in all things. She needs
- 22:20to see the example of the widow who goes before
- 22:26God, who is her hope, literally begging the Lord
- 22:31to take care of her and giving him praise for
- 22:33doing so. Verse 14, and I will end with this.
- 22:36So I would have younger widows marry. That makes
- 22:40sense. Here's what I mean. How many of you guys
- 22:43married because you loved your spouse? I just,
- 22:45I love them. If I didn't love you, I'd have married
- 22:49you. Don't believe that. I'm going to wreck you
- 22:53right now. I'm so sorry. You don't marry because
- 22:56you're in love. You ever notice that the marriages
- 22:59that quote unquote start off with love always
- 23:01end in hate. But marriages that start off in
- 23:04a commitment, understanding two very important
- 23:06principles. Okay, you ready? You get married.
- 23:10Because that person loves God more than they
- 23:12love anyone else. The only person that matters
- 23:15is Jesus. So I don't need you to fill my life.
- 23:18I need you to partner with me. Fit my life. He
- 23:23created a helper fit for him. The second is she
- 23:27fits my life, right? She is like hand in glove.
- 23:31She helps me. She is willing to sacrifice and
- 23:34do everything that she needs to do to help me.
- 23:37become all I can be in Jesus, and I do the same.
- 23:40I say this a lot, and I know it drives my wife
- 23:43crazy, but it's the truth. When I look at my
- 23:45wife, 25, 26 years, be 26 years this June, 26
- 23:49years, and I said, honey, I love you. When I
- 23:52look at my life now, my love for her now, it's
- 23:55not even close. I liked her a lot. I liked her.
- 24:00Attraction isn't love. It's not a love. Attraction
- 24:03is a lust. It's a desire. It's what God has given
- 24:07us that we would desire one another. But love
- 24:10demands not only that we live it, it demands
- 24:14that it's a person. Love is Jesus. My love for
- 24:20her is way different today than it was when I
- 24:24first met her. So why should younger widows marry?
- 24:27Because they learn to love. You learn love in
- 24:32marriage. You have no idea, young people, what
- 24:34love is. You have no clue. When you are at the
- 24:39bedside after three miscarriages, you learn what
- 24:43love is. That's love. When you stick through
- 24:48thick and thin watching your mom pass away from
- 24:51cancer, that's what love is. Feelings come and
- 24:54go. Love is eternal. True love. It requires sacrifice.
- 24:59So when I say I love her, I love her even when
- 25:03at times I don't like her. And vice versa. I
- 25:12mean, how many of you ladies know that your husband
- 25:18gets on your nerves? Do you honestly really like
- 25:22him at that moment? Okay. Donna's like, oh, pastor,
- 25:28you should love her anyway. I do. I stay with
- 25:31her. I'm willing to die with her. I want to be
- 25:38the notebook guy holding hands as we both die
- 25:41in bed together. So let me end it with this.
- 25:48So I would have younger women marry bare children.
- 25:51Why? She finds her. She fulfills her purpose
- 25:55and her wholeness in being a mother. There is
- 25:58no greater vocation for a woman than to be a
- 26:02mom. And understanding that, even with PRC here
- 26:08today, we should do everything we can to fight
- 26:11for life. Because there is no greater calling
- 26:14on any woman than that one calling, to be a mom.
- 26:18Lastly, she must manage their households. Learn
- 26:21to be busy at home. Learn, develop, grow. There
- 26:26is no greater CEO, administrator, nurse, cook,
- 26:32housekeeper than the woman. My wife can outwork
- 26:37anybody. Lastly, and this is the end of this
- 26:43verse, and give an adversary no occasion for
- 26:48slander. See, when a young woman goes back into
- 26:51her God -given role and responsibility, she eliminates
- 26:55false accusations about her. As a matter of fact,
- 26:59do you remember that woman that the Pharisees
- 27:02brought before Jesus, caught her in adultery?
- 27:06What did he say? We caught this woman in adultery.
- 27:10How would you know? Were you watching through
- 27:11the window, you little dirty dog? You know what
- 27:18else? There's another story. The woman at the
- 27:20well, where's your husband? Why are you over
- 27:23here getting water? How come your husband's not
- 27:25doing the work? It's his job. Why are you asking
- 27:27me for water? I'm a woman. Go get your husband.
- 27:30I don't have a husband. You're right. You have
- 27:32five. This is an example. Isn't that interesting?
- 27:35When a woman's not busy living out her God -given
- 27:37purpose and responsibility, her calling, her
- 27:40ordained vocation, she gets busy doing other
- 27:44things. Enjoy being a woman, especially being
- 27:47a beautiful woman of God. Father, I want to thank
- 27:50you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 27:52To you be honor and glory. We give you praise.
- 27:55You are God. And we thank you for the women in
- 27:59our lives. Help us as a church to be faithful
- 28:01with the widow. And to encourage the young widow
- 28:04to continue to live out her role as a woman.
- 28:09To take back biblical feminism. That you would
- 28:13be high and lifted up and glorified in every
- 28:15way. We praise you and thank you in Jesus' name.
