Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to the Intel with Greg Cosell. On
- 0:10Speaker 1: Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan, and
- 0:14Speaker 1: to finish it off, we've got Greg Cosell to look
- 0:17Speaker 1: at NFL Draft prospect safeties. This is the last position
- 0:22Speaker 1: we have done, every single position group. Coincidentally, it might
- 0:26Speaker 1: be the position the Eagles need most because they currently
- 0:29Speaker 1: don't have as starting safety next to Andrew mccooba. But
- 0:33Speaker 1: a lot of NFL teams need safeties. And as we've
- 0:35Speaker 1: talked about Greg and our discussions with corners, you're seeing
- 0:38Speaker 1: more positionless or multi positional players in the backfield who
- 0:42Speaker 1: can play both outside corner nickel and safety.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and obviously it depends on your scheme. You know, Look,
- 0:50Speaker 2: everybody's gonna you know, say, well, you know, Mike McDonald,
- 0:53Speaker 2: you know we want to structure our defense like that.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well that's great if you have Nick m and Warre
- 0:58Speaker 2: because there's not gonna be you know, it's thirty Nick
- 1:00Speaker 2: him and Warriors. So you know that stuff's always easy
- 1:03Speaker 2: to say. We hear that every year obviously after teams
- 1:06Speaker 2: win a Super Bowl or or a team has a
- 1:08Speaker 2: great defense, you know, so we'll see. But safety, and
- 1:12Speaker 2: we've discussed this. Safety is a far more important position
- 1:15Speaker 2: in today's NFL than I think people thought it was
- 1:18Speaker 2: a number of years ago. So it's it's it's hard
- 1:20Speaker 2: to play with the way the game has evolved on offense.
- 1:25Speaker 2: If you don't have good safeties, it's just hard. Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And this group right at them, I mean you look,
- 1:30Speaker 1: once you get past the first four or five, I
- 1:32Speaker 1: don't know if this is the strong I mean, Greg,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you can tell it, but I don't know. I don't
- 1:36Speaker 1: know how many guys you're going to be seeing going
- 1:37Speaker 1: on day two and early days based on merit, you know.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's why on the other the previous show
- 1:44Speaker 3: and the Quarterback Show, we talked about a couple of
- 1:46Speaker 3: guys who might.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Be playing safety at the next level. County Scott was
- 1:49Speaker 4: one of them.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Yep, it's just maybe Stukes. Maybe trading Stokes is safety. Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 4: But there's a.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Saying in football, the more you can do, because it's
- 1:58Speaker 3: when I first started covering the two thousands, Okay, there
- 2:01Speaker 3: was a box safety and a post safety.
- 2:03Speaker 4: That's it, right, that's it.
- 2:04Speaker 3: There was no like, there was no movement right now, Gosh,
- 2:07Speaker 3: got the more less interchangeable.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You don't want to be I mean, as a defense,
- 2:11Speaker 2: you don't want to be stuck with that. I mean,
- 2:12Speaker 2: obviously sometimes you are just the nature of the players
- 2:15Speaker 2: you have, but in an ideal world, you don't want
- 2:17Speaker 2: to be stuck with a guy that can only play
- 2:19Speaker 2: in the box or you feel can only play on
- 2:21Speaker 2: the back end.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Correct, all right, Greg, Well, I feel like throughout this
- 2:25Speaker 1: series we have asked you about every single starter for
- 2:27Speaker 1: Ohio States defense and whether they're not they're gonna be
- 2:30Speaker 1: a top fifteen pick. So might as well finish off
- 2:32Speaker 1: a safety with Caleb Downs, who will probably be an
- 2:35Speaker 1: upper first round pick.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Oh he stinks, Let's move on. Really, you know, it's
- 2:41Speaker 2: funny Downs is, he's just a really good player. The
- 2:45Speaker 2: question is you know he's five eleven five, a's two
- 2:50Speaker 2: oh six, which is not small. And obviously he started
- 2:54Speaker 2: from day one at Alabama. That was with Nick Saban there,
- 2:58Speaker 2: you know, with safety, and Nick Saban makes it a
- 3:01Speaker 2: point to coach the DBS what he did at Alabama.
- 3:04Speaker 2: So you know that Downs is incredibly intelligent. We've heard
- 3:07Speaker 2: nothing but phenomenal things about his interview process and how
- 3:12Speaker 2: much he knows. I mean, he's just there's not a
- 3:15Speaker 2: lot to say about him. You know, he's just a
- 3:17Speaker 2: really good player. You know, again, he's you can line
- 3:21Speaker 2: him up in multiple spots. He's not Nicki min Wura.
- 3:23Speaker 2: You know, he's not six three, two twenty. You know,
- 3:26Speaker 2: he's not that guy. He's more of a true safety.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But you know, he's also played a lot in the slot.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know, he's another one of those guys that does
- 3:35Speaker 2: have versatility. I mean, he played almost six hundred snaps
- 3:38Speaker 2: in his three year college career in the slot. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: the guy, the guy who sort of came to my
- 3:45Speaker 2: mind and people might say, oh, no, he's better than that,
- 3:47Speaker 2: because this guy was not a first round pick. But
- 3:49Speaker 2: he's a really good player, and he's used in a
- 3:52Speaker 2: multi dimensional way in the context of his defense under
- 3:56Speaker 2: Todd Bowles. He kind of reminded me of Antoine Winfield times.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know, just aggressive, smart, could do anything, can play
- 4:05Speaker 2: on the back end, can blitz, can play the run.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You know, just one of those guys that can kind
- 4:09Speaker 2: of do it all at a really good level.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I believe the only thing that kept Winfield from being
- 4:16Speaker 1: a first round pick was that he was five to nine, right.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Right, probably, yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, but I mean, obviously,
- 4:23Speaker 2: you know, Windfield's a really good player. I mean, and
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know, even even Buddha Baker. I mean, he's a
- 4:28Speaker 2: little different than Buddha Baker, but Buddha Baker is another guy.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Not a lot of people think about him because the
- 4:33Speaker 2: Cards have not been a very good team during Buddha
- 4:36Speaker 2: Baker's career. But you know, Buddha Baker is a great player,
- 4:39Speaker 2: right it is.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Down's the guy who comes right into your defense and
- 4:43Speaker 1: you build your back end around him, and he steers
- 4:48Speaker 1: the traffic.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And that's what they That's what I've heard. Yes, I mean,
- 4:52Speaker 2: that's what I've been told, and that's what I've heard.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So you know, look, the guy plays. I mean, he's
- 4:58Speaker 2: got connect energy, he's got a high motor. You love
- 5:00Speaker 2: the way he plays. Like I said, everything you hear
- 5:03Speaker 2: about him is that he's super intelligent. I think he's
- 5:07Speaker 2: got a great feel reading route concepts. When he plays
- 5:10Speaker 2: on the back end, he you know, he does a
- 5:12Speaker 2: great job of what we call cutting crossers, meaning driving
- 5:15Speaker 2: on crossing routes. When he you know, when he's not
- 5:17Speaker 2: necessarily responsible in man coverage for them, you know, he's.
- 5:22Speaker 2: He's just he's a vision smart, savvy player and obviously
- 5:27Speaker 2: has very good, you know, physical and athletic traits. Is
- 5:30Speaker 2: he the best athlete you've ever seen at safety. No,
- 5:33Speaker 2: but he's certainly not a bad athlete.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And I believe his brother Adam is Josh Downs and
- 5:37Speaker 1: the cults.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Uh so we may see as many as three safeties
- 5:43Speaker 3: going in the first round. The next guy had a
- 5:44Speaker 3: phenomenal actually combine workout where it's Dylan Theneman from Argon.
- 5:49Speaker 4: What are your thoughts on him?
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's he's a fun guy to watch because
- 5:53Speaker 2: he's one of those guys that flies all over you know. Now,
- 5:57Speaker 2: he's over six feet. He ran except ably well, he's
- 6:01Speaker 2: a little more straight line. I mean, he's he's he's
- 6:04Speaker 2: a really good player. I think he sees it really well.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I mean he plays downhill in the run game with
- 6:10Speaker 2: a ton of juice. I mean, this guy, he's compact
- 6:13Speaker 2: in his build, he's strong, he'll collision blockers and he'll
- 6:17Speaker 2: work right through him. He's got great straight line play speed.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But you know, he is he is a little stiff.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He's not a loose athlete in that sense. But you
- 6:29Speaker 2: just love the way he plays. I mean, this guy
- 6:31Speaker 2: embraces the physical nature of the game. He's a tempo setter.
- 6:35Speaker 2: He's super aggressive. You know, he's another one of those
- 6:39Speaker 2: guys that's really smart in with the way in which
- 6:42Speaker 2: he plays. You know, his speed, like I said, great
- 6:45Speaker 2: straight line speed. I kind of felt watching him that
- 6:50Speaker 2: he'd be really effective in a Vic Fangio type scheme
- 6:53Speaker 2: where quarters is the foundation that that that to me,
- 6:57Speaker 2: is the way he'd be most effective with the with
- 6:59Speaker 2: the cover concepts that work off that. So you know, again,
- 7:04Speaker 2: you know, we always talk about the Eagles, what they're
- 7:05Speaker 2: going to do. Where do they drafted twenty twenty three. Yes,
- 7:09Speaker 2: you know, I don't know if he's going to be
- 7:10Speaker 2: there or not. You know, we've discussed the fact that
- 7:13Speaker 2: they know they're going to get Andrew mccoba back healthy,
- 7:15Speaker 2: and he's he's a starter at one safety position. But
- 7:18Speaker 2: if we were to line up and play tomorrow, Adam,
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think you'd probably be the other safety. So so
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know, they need another guy to place to start
- 7:28Speaker 2: at safety as we speak right now.
- 7:30Speaker 3: So so on this guy, he just to speak to
- 7:33Speaker 3: Greg's point about he's he's very he flies around.
- 7:38Speaker 4: For he was at Purdue and Oregon.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I've watched him in pained tackles.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Over three years. That's insane for safety. That's that's middle
- 7:47Speaker 3: linebacker kind of stats. I know, tackles are yeah, sort
- 7:49Speaker 3: of overrated stat but that's you should mention that he's
- 7:52Speaker 3: very active.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Oh he's. And that's the way he plays when you
- 7:54Speaker 2: watch him. I mean, this guy, this guy flies all
- 7:57Speaker 2: over I mean, he's he's, he's not. There's no hesitation
- 8:01Speaker 2: in the way in which he plays, and every once
- 8:03Speaker 2: in a while he's over aggressive. You live with that
- 8:05Speaker 2: just because you're not going to tell him not to
- 8:06Speaker 2: do that, you know, but that to me is not
- 8:09Speaker 2: an issue, Like I don't view that and go, my god,
- 8:11Speaker 2: what a horrible weakness. That's a killer. I mean, this
- 8:13Speaker 2: guy sees it and he goes and he goes with intent.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean he's there's no there's no hesitation, he doesn't
- 8:21Speaker 2: slow down. I mean, this guy plays Greig.
- 8:25Speaker 1: The next guy is someone that you know, Eagles coach
- 8:27Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni should really have some intel on his Emmanuel
- 8:32Speaker 1: McNeil Warren out of Toledo, who I believe had one
- 8:34Speaker 1: year overlap with Quinjon Mitchell. And you got to give
- 8:38Speaker 1: Jason Kandall, who was a teammate of Sirianni's at Mount Union,
- 8:41Speaker 1: a lot of credit. I mean he's been putting NFL,
- 8:44Speaker 1: especially defensive players in the NFL from Toledo. I think
- 8:48Speaker 1: he's now the head coach at Yukon, but he's he
- 8:51Speaker 1: did a really nice job with that Toledo program. And
- 8:53Speaker 1: this kid could go in the first round.
- 8:56Speaker 2: McKeil Warren. Yeah. I mean he didn't run great, but
- 8:59Speaker 2: he's big. You know, he may be just in terms
- 9:03Speaker 2: of like physical gifts in the way in which he moves,
- 9:06Speaker 2: he could be as gifted as any safety in the
- 9:08Speaker 2: draft class. I mean you're talking about a guy that's
- 9:10Speaker 2: over six to three. I don't really think he's got
- 9:12Speaker 2: a scheme limitation. You know, some might even see him
- 9:16Speaker 2: as a big nickel like in the m and Worry Mold.
- 9:18Speaker 2: He doesn't weigh as much, but I mean he's long.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Could he begin his career as that third safety in
- 9:24Speaker 2: a big nickel package? Yeah, but this guy is is long,
- 9:29Speaker 2: he's athletic, he's fluid, he moves easily. He has a
- 9:32Speaker 2: very loose, rangey feel to his movement. I mean, he's
- 9:35Speaker 2: got light, quick feed, He's got some sudden twitch to him.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Because of his length, he covers a lot of ground.
- 9:41Speaker 2: He can make plays in pursuit. He attacked downhill in
- 9:45Speaker 2: the run game with aggression and competitiveness. He was willing
- 9:48Speaker 2: to get dirty and hit with force. You know, he's
- 9:51Speaker 2: got that profile. You know a lot of times when
- 9:54Speaker 2: I when I'm I'm watching a guy, you know, the
- 9:57Speaker 2: way I do it is I try to get a
- 9:58Speaker 2: feel for what his athletic and physical profile is, you know,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and I you know, I'll notice things early, but then
- 10:05Speaker 2: as I keep going, it sort of really shows itself.
- 10:08Speaker 2: So with him, I said size, length, physicality, play, speed, range, versatility, competitiveness.
- 10:14Speaker 2: You know, he's got a really strong trades profile. So
- 10:18Speaker 2: obviously played it Toledo, but that didn't seem to impact
- 10:21Speaker 2: won Mitchell in his first year in the league. So,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you know, I don't want to sit here and say
- 10:24Speaker 2: he would need time. You never know. Then it comes
- 10:26Speaker 2: down to the to the player. You know. I would
- 10:30Speaker 2: imagine the Eagles brought him in.
- 10:33Speaker 4: That's a good question.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I thought they did, but I'm not one hundred percent sure.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I would think they did but again
- 10:38Speaker 2: I don't know that for sure. But but you know,
- 10:41Speaker 2: there's a lot to like about this kid. There's not
- 10:43Speaker 2: much not to like.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Well, Greg, the next guy we're going to talk about
- 10:48Speaker 3: played at three schools, New Mexico, Houston, and LSU.
- 10:50Speaker 4: That's a J. Holsey from LSU.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he almost looks like a linebacker. I mean,
- 10:57Speaker 2: this guy is he's This guy's rocked up. I mean,
- 11:01Speaker 2: you know, you know, probably not a true post safety
- 11:06Speaker 2: just because of the way he's built. Not that he's
- 11:09Speaker 2: not that he doesn't have any speed or anything, although
- 11:11Speaker 2: his speed wasn't very good. But he's he's got you know,
- 11:15Speaker 2: the way I described him in my notes, I said,
- 11:17Speaker 2: he's a He has a muscled up frame and a
- 11:19Speaker 2: dog mentality. That's kind of who he is. He's got
- 11:23Speaker 2: an aggressive and competitive temperament. It showed up in his
- 11:26Speaker 2: run defense. He attacked down hill, he dropped the hammer.
- 11:29Speaker 2: He was one of those guys when he hits you,
- 11:31Speaker 2: you knew he hit you. He drove on receivers, he
- 11:35Speaker 2: delivered big hits in the middle of the field. He
- 11:37Speaker 2: was a see it and go guy. I mean, when
- 11:39Speaker 2: he saw it, he went and you know, somewhat like Thinneman.
- 11:43Speaker 2: He's just not as good. You know, he had a
- 11:45Speaker 2: very quick trigger, He had top down explosiveness. He could
- 11:48Speaker 2: be a factor in the run game out. He does
- 11:51Speaker 2: not possess the sideline to sideline range and recovery speed
- 11:55Speaker 2: to be a post safety. That's not his game. I
- 11:57Speaker 2: think in split safety coverages he can be effective. The
- 12:02Speaker 2: guy that sort of came to mind when I watched him,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and again, you guys know, I'll just repeat if people
- 12:08Speaker 2: hearing this for the first time, that I don't sit
- 12:11Speaker 2: around thinking, oh, who does a guy remind me of?
- 12:13Speaker 2: Which is either pops into my head or it doesn't.
- 12:16Speaker 2: The guy that I kind of thought of watching him
- 12:17Speaker 2: was talanoa Hufegna, you know, just really physical, you know,
- 12:21Speaker 2: not a true post safety, but obviously can play there
- 12:25Speaker 2: depending on you know, sometimes you have to do that.
- 12:30Speaker 2: He you know, physical, aggressive, intense, competitive, drop the hammer,
- 12:34Speaker 2: muscled up. That's what Halsey is. He'll be a Day
- 12:37Speaker 2: two guy.
- 12:40Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about a USC prospect, Kamari Ramsey.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he's an interesting guy. He's he's was hurt this year,
- 12:48Speaker 2: so you only played six or seven games. I ended
- 12:51Speaker 2: up watching him last summer, so I'm familiar with him.
- 12:54Speaker 2: He played safety. He's another one of those guys that
- 12:57Speaker 2: has a lot of snaps in safety, in slot corner.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think he's ultimately a safety. He moves well. He's
- 13:03Speaker 2: an easy, controlled mover. Good athlete, you know, not a
- 13:07Speaker 2: special athlete. Good athlete. I think he sees it well.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I think he plays the game under control. You know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: he's one of those guys that would not surprise me.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Maybe I'll be dead wrong. You know, it wouldn't be
- 13:17Speaker 2: the first time, and I'm sure if I'm wrong, I'll
- 13:19Speaker 2: be told what a moron I am. It's happened many
- 13:22Speaker 2: times before, right, right, right, right. He could be a
- 13:28Speaker 2: better pro than he is a college player, because I
- 13:30Speaker 2: just think, you know, and I never I'm always leary
- 13:33Speaker 2: of saying in the right scheme because I don't know
- 13:36Speaker 2: how people see him. He coaches in the league. But
- 13:38Speaker 2: I think he's just a fluid guy who sees it
- 13:41Speaker 2: well and could be a you know, could be a
- 13:44Speaker 2: really nice player in the pros. Not a superstar, but
- 13:46Speaker 2: like just a really solid foundational piece of your back
- 13:50Speaker 2: end defense. All right.
- 13:53Speaker 3: The next guy, I don't know if he's familiar with abacab,
- 13:56Speaker 3: but that's Genesis Smith out of.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Oh totally fail with Jenesis Smith. And you know, this
- 14:03Speaker 2: is this is the time when I I'm going to
- 14:05Speaker 2: try to be a nice guy. Genesis Smith is a
- 14:11Speaker 2: fascinating guy in that he's long, he's fluid, he's athletic.
- 14:16Speaker 2: He's a pure post safety because he is does not
- 14:21Speaker 2: have any real interest in tackling and being physical. And
- 14:25Speaker 2: I'm just being honest based on the tape. I mean,
- 14:27Speaker 2: you know he's you know, he's that's not his game.
- 14:31Speaker 2: He's he's very long, he's got light feet, very comfortable
- 14:35Speaker 2: movement traits. To me, he's a post safety. You know,
- 14:38Speaker 2: he's very fluid. But you know, he did not play
- 14:42Speaker 2: with the desired physical element to his game. He may
- 14:46Speaker 2: lack the natural strength you would like. You know, I
- 14:51Speaker 2: would never say a guy doesn't play hard, because I
- 14:53Speaker 2: don't think that's the case. But you know, there's just
- 14:56Speaker 2: not a competitive toughness to the way he played. That's
- 14:59Speaker 2: not that's not who he is. And I don't think
- 15:02Speaker 2: that's all of a sudden who's going to be in
- 15:03Speaker 2: the NFL.
- 15:04Speaker 4: He's got great length, and that's that's not good.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Say inches there on that wingspan.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and and he his vertical was forty two and
- 15:13Speaker 2: a half. No, No, he can play. I'm gonna be
- 15:16Speaker 2: fascinating to see where he gets drafted because he does
- 15:19Speaker 2: not really present any kind of physical presence, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 2: in the run game. I mean, but on the back end, man,
- 15:26Speaker 2: he's smooth, he's fluid, and he's over six too. I mean, yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 2: he's that's what he is.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Maybe change his positions to corner.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Who knows, you know, oh you know we might as
- 15:37Speaker 3: you were talking, Greg, because I only know this because
- 15:39Speaker 3: I was watching tape with you and Jaws is remember
- 15:41Speaker 3: Stuart Schweigert.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, iowa sixty four like two point fifteen.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah, great length, but he was not he would not
- 15:50Speaker 4: tackle like you should. He wasn't physical enough, you know.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I mean a lot of while there are big guys,
- 15:54Speaker 2: there's another guy like that who I remember and you'll
- 15:57Speaker 2: remember him as well. Do you remember Taylor may Is
- 15:59Speaker 2: that he usc Oh yeah, well.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Here's a super freak atholetice but not physical.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I mean you'd expect him to be like a hammer,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and he wasn't. You know. There's you know, and again
- 16:09Speaker 2: I'm not I don't know if you can coach that.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I have no idea, So I'm not going to take
- 16:13Speaker 2: a side because I have no idea. I don't know
- 16:16Speaker 2: if you can make Genesis Smith become a more physical player.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I don't need the answer to that.
- 16:20Speaker 1: You know, look at Rikullan, who the Eagles signed from Seattle.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I mean, he's a long limp, but he's not a
- 16:25Speaker 1: great run defender. He comes off the field on first down,
- 16:28Speaker 1: you know he does for the Seattle So yeah, sometimes
- 16:31Speaker 1: that stuff doesn't translate interestingly.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you just don't know.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 17:33Speaker 1: one and.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Up real quick.
- 17:35Speaker 3: There was one player we forgot to talk about with tackles.
- 17:37Speaker 3: We do this like every year. There's a guy we
- 17:39Speaker 3: just Overlookedlake Miller offensive tackles. Yeah, Blake Miller from Clemson.
- 17:42Speaker 3: I know this is a little bit switch up for you.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Blake Miller is to me a very polarizing player. I know,
- 17:51Speaker 2: just from what I've seen, and again not that I
- 17:53Speaker 2: don't put a ton of stock in mock draft, but
- 17:55Speaker 2: you know, from what I've seen, he seems to be
- 17:57Speaker 2: a guy that could go in the first round. Blake
- 18:01Speaker 2: Miller to me, I'll tell you the guy he reminded
- 18:04Speaker 2: me of. And and this guy played in the league
- 18:06Speaker 2: and actually he just retired, and you could say he
- 18:08Speaker 2: had a phenomenal career. He was not a high pick,
- 18:11Speaker 2: but he had you could say he had a great career.
- 18:13Speaker 2: He Blake Miller reminds me of like a Rob Havnstein.
- 18:18Speaker 2: I think he's I think he's there's a lot to
- 18:22Speaker 2: like about him. But the way I would describe him
- 18:27Speaker 2: is his his good plays are really good and I
- 18:30Speaker 2: love you love the way he plays. That's gonna endear
- 18:33Speaker 2: him to to O line coaches because he's he battles,
- 18:36Speaker 2: he he almost plays like a guard, not and he's
- 18:39Speaker 2: not going to transition to guard. I'm not saying he should.
- 18:41Speaker 2: He's going to be a right tackle without question, but
- 18:45Speaker 2: he plays almost like a guard. And that he's he's
- 18:47Speaker 2: so competitive and he battles and he fights and and
- 18:51Speaker 2: you love that. But his bad plays in past protection
- 18:55Speaker 2: are just really bad. Like and I had this conversation
- 18:58Speaker 2: with an O line coach and agreed on this, and
- 19:01Speaker 2: you know, in fact, the online coach said to me,
- 19:04Speaker 2: I don't know if I could draft him. He's just
- 19:06Speaker 2: bad plays are just too bad because you think about
- 19:09Speaker 2: one on one pass protection and you know, if you
- 19:11Speaker 2: can't really do that, it's it's hard to play tackle,
- 19:14Speaker 2: you know. But you like the way the guy plays,
- 19:19Speaker 2: you know, he's very aggressive and physical and battles his
- 19:23Speaker 2: ass off. I mean, he's one of those guys. And
- 19:25Speaker 2: by the way, he's a four year starter. I think
- 19:28Speaker 2: I read somewhere he never missed a practice. That means
- 19:31Speaker 2: something never missed a practice like fifty one or fifty
- 19:34Speaker 2: two career starts. You know, it's there's something to be
- 19:38Speaker 2: said for that. And see, now we just get into
- 19:40Speaker 2: where guys are drafted. Let's say you draft him in
- 19:43Speaker 2: the first round and he ends up being Rob Havenstein
- 19:46Speaker 2: and plays ten years as you're starting right tackle. People
- 19:49Speaker 2: might say, oh, well, they overdrafted him, you know, a
- 19:50Speaker 2: guy like having Stein was, But that becomes irrelevant. If
- 19:53Speaker 2: he's a ten year starter at right tackle, then then
- 19:57Speaker 2: it's worth it, you know. I mean, see that's the
- 19:59Speaker 2: thing people start with, Well, this guy's are reached that.
- 20:02Speaker 2: You know, I don't know what all that stuff means.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I'm not smart enough to know what that stuff means.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It sounds like these guys, the guy Blake here is
- 20:12Speaker 1: maybe perfect for a certain like almost a shannaham mcvas
- 20:15Speaker 1: game where you're running a lot. You're you're not asked
- 20:17Speaker 1: to do pass pro for like you know, Andy Reid
- 20:20Speaker 1: in the nine.
- 20:20Speaker 2: You don't want to ask him to do a ton
- 20:22Speaker 2: of vertical pass sets because I think you know that
- 20:25Speaker 2: would be an issue for him.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you help him out with play at working everything
- 20:28Speaker 1: all that.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Yep, yep, yep, you're exactly right, You're one hundred percent right.
- 20:33Speaker 2: But you know, that's the thing about the draft, just
- 20:35Speaker 2: as we wrap up this whole series, it's you know,
- 20:38Speaker 2: and again we all do it all right, trying not
- 20:42Speaker 2: to Like, I never say a guy's are reached. That's
- 20:44Speaker 2: never in my vocabulary because when people say that, they're
- 20:48Speaker 2: saying that based on how they have evaluated the player.
- 20:51Speaker 2: They have no idea how the team has evaluated the player. So,
- 20:55Speaker 2: you know, and and and then if a guy ends
- 20:57Speaker 2: up like like let's say the Eagles draft, you know,
- 21:00Speaker 2: I don't know McNeil Warren in the first round, and
- 21:03Speaker 2: somebody says, oh, you know, they could have gotten him
- 21:04Speaker 2: in the second round, or he would got forty best
- 21:07Speaker 2: best player on my board. That's a real you know,
- 21:09Speaker 2: first of all, you don't know any of that, but
- 21:11Speaker 2: you know, if you love the player, and let's say
- 21:14Speaker 2: the Eagles see him as a guy based on meeting him,
- 21:16Speaker 2: talking to him, the whole deal that they feel can
- 21:18Speaker 2: step right in from day one and start next to Macouba.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Then he's not a reach, you know. Then then he's
- 21:23Speaker 2: a player. You know that stuff doesn't mean anything to me.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I'll give you one more so on the reach thing.
- 21:28Speaker 3: So and look, but NFL people were telling me this
- 21:32Speaker 3: when the Raiders took Colt Miller in the first round.
- 21:34Speaker 4: It was like, how dumb are the Raiders?
- 21:36Speaker 2: Right? Right?
- 21:37Speaker 3: Then he's turned out to be he was hurt last season.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Actually a pretty good left tackle, but really long. Right,
- 21:43Speaker 3: it's a project this guy almost like you said, oh,
- 21:46Speaker 3: you could have got this guy in the second or
- 21:47Speaker 3: third round.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Well you don't know that, And well that's what he's.
- 21:51Speaker 2: A great example. There's a there's a right tackle from
- 21:56Speaker 2: Arizona State? Is it Arizona State? Max? I? I? Yeah, yeah,
- 22:02Speaker 2: who only has played football for you know, three or
- 22:05Speaker 2: four years? Right. I really like his tape and I
- 22:09Speaker 2: think there's a ton there. I think he could be
- 22:11Speaker 2: a really good player. He may not be ready to
- 22:14Speaker 2: play right now, okay, because he hasn't played a ton
- 22:17Speaker 2: of football. So let's say you draft him and I
- 22:19Speaker 2: don't know where he's going to go. You know, you
- 22:21Speaker 2: see him on some first round mox again, whatever that means.
- 22:24Speaker 2: But let's say you draft him. You know, let's say
- 22:26Speaker 2: the Eagles draft just for funn and games. He's not
- 22:29Speaker 2: going to be their starting right tackle this year. Okay,
- 22:31Speaker 2: we know that. But let's say Lane plays this year
- 22:34Speaker 2: and retires, and then next year or the year after,
- 22:37Speaker 2: this kid becomes a great player. Well, so you're going
- 22:41Speaker 2: to say that they reach for him. I mean, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 2: there's a balance here. And I had this conversation with
- 22:48Speaker 2: a former GM and this is a great conversation to have.
- 22:51Speaker 2: And as you guys keep talking about the draft because
- 22:53Speaker 2: you'll do more of your you know, of this stuff.
- 22:56Speaker 2: There's a balance between what a guy is now because
- 22:59Speaker 2: he's twenty years two, twenty one years old, and what
- 23:01Speaker 2: you see him becoming. And fans struggle with that because they,
- 23:06Speaker 2: particularly in the first couple of rounds, they want that
- 23:08Speaker 2: guy to be a starter and an all pro right away.
- 23:11Speaker 2: And you know, sometimes that happens. You know, hey, sometimes
- 23:14Speaker 2: it does. But if a guy becomes a great player
- 23:17Speaker 2: down the road, you know, two three years down the road,
- 23:20Speaker 2: then you know what, it's a pretty damn good draft pick,
- 23:22Speaker 2: right And so there's a balance between what a guy
- 23:25Speaker 2: is at twenty years old or twenty one years old,
- 23:27Speaker 2: and what he can become a twenty three or twenty
- 23:29Speaker 2: four or twenty five.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Right, yep, hey, But since we're just throwing quickly, Jolly
- 23:35Speaker 1: Kilgore from South Carolina.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Did you see him? Because I did it the Eagles. Yeah,
- 23:39Speaker 2: he's he's a traits player because the way he was
- 23:42Speaker 2: used you didn't see. He didn't get a lot of action,
- 23:45Speaker 2: so to speak. Yeah, I had to watch a lot
- 23:46Speaker 2: of games and I still came away feeling like I
- 23:48Speaker 2: wasn't exactly sure what this guy is as a player.
- 23:52Speaker 2: But he's got great traits. He's big, he can run,
- 23:57Speaker 2: he played slot, he played corner. Excuse me, he played safety,
- 24:01Speaker 2: slot and safety. I would probably see him as his safety,
- 24:05Speaker 2: but again that comes down to how people evaluate, you know,
- 24:09Speaker 2: for their team. Couldn't now there's a guy that could fill,
- 24:12Speaker 2: in my view, the M and Warry role if you
- 24:14Speaker 2: want to go big Nickel. But yeah, he just did.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Some guys you watch and you watch and you watch,
- 24:20Speaker 2: and the way they're deployed in college, you just don't see.
- 24:23Speaker 2: It's like Cante Scott didn't play a lot of man.
- 24:25Speaker 2: My guess is he's capable of it. But I didn't
- 24:28Speaker 2: see it, you know, right, which means other teams didn't
- 24:31Speaker 2: see it either. You know, teams didn't see it. So
- 24:33Speaker 2: you know now you're you're projecting based on his athletic traits.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Awesome, and one last leftover guy, I don't know if
- 24:40Speaker 1: we did this wide receiver from Cincinnati, Jeff Caldwell.
- 24:43Speaker 2: AH six five ran a four to three three.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I mean, he's he really is so unrefined as a
- 24:54Speaker 5: route where he literally to run routes and try to
- 24:56Speaker 5: break down, would take five steps and literally drop his
- 24:59Speaker 5: whole by, like you know exactly when he was gonna
- 25:02Speaker 5: have to break.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But he's six' five plus and he can. Run so you,
- 25:07Speaker 2: know those, guys they're a. Crapshoot you, know you get
- 25:10Speaker 2: excited because of the, speed but you, know think of
- 25:13Speaker 2: it this. Way how many times do guys who run
- 25:17Speaker 2: super fast just come in the league and start running by.
- 25:19Speaker 2: People look At Xavier. Worthy he's been with The chiefs
- 25:22Speaker 2: for two. YEARS i was sitting in the, combine you,
- 25:25Speaker 2: know and it's when here in the four to two to, one,
- 25:27Speaker 2: Okay and he's not been a vertical dimension for The
- 25:31Speaker 2: chiefs through two, years you. Know and it's not because
- 25:33Speaker 2: the quarterback can't make the, throws you, Know, SO i,
- 25:36Speaker 2: mean you JUST i always struggle with. That just because
- 25:40Speaker 2: a receiver runs fast that automatically doesn't mean that he's
- 25:44Speaker 2: going to run by people in THE.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Nfl, Right Hollywood, Brown Hollywood brown was elite. SPEED i don't,
- 25:50Speaker 3: know he's a smaller. Guy we haven't seen enough of
- 25:52Speaker 3: that from.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Him, yeah a lot of that is because of the
- 25:55Speaker 1: way teams are defending now as. Well you, know they're
- 25:57Speaker 1: not letting you be no. Question all, right great, Stuff,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Greg thank you so. Much it's been an awesome podcast
- 26:04Speaker 1: series previewing every single position in all the top prospects
- 26:08Speaker 1: at each. Position and then after the draft is, done
- 26:11Speaker 1: we'll have you go back and do a little intel
- 26:14Speaker 1: for us on.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Then then we'll then, well you, know then we'll start
- 26:17Speaker 2: grading every team's draft that you, know you probably got
- 26:21Speaker 2: to do That sunday morning at the you, know at the,
- 26:22Speaker 2: latest because you know everybody will know the.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Answer we're doing It saturday.
