Global Music Collective: It will be the best day. Kate, why will it be the best day on Entry Points Radio if this is your first time tuning in, this is a podcast, she knows. kate: Because well this this is a great time for you to tune in. Every time is a great time for you to tune in. I just I can't get over it. It's so fun. Anyway, because it's just a bunch of nice people talking about their playlists. I mean who wouldn't want that? Okay, so today yes, don't don't blow my moment here, Richie. So today is a very big Global Music Collective: Why? Ca why is it Tell us why? Yeah, but today we have a very special event because it's been two Okay, I'm sorry. kate: Great day because one of our favorite people, collaborators, friends, totally awesome human beings, Carl, DJ Invisible. How do you say Hollier? Hollier? He's joining us. Hollier? Hollier? Cut that out. Global Music Collective: We can cut that. Do you want to give it away that it's him right away? kate: No. Okay, so ⁓ let's try this one again. ⁓ yeah, Richie, today. Today is the day. Today is the day that we have another friend. Richie and I have some awesome, it's not just you and me. ⁓ it's not. We have actually some really awesome friends who are way cooler than we are, as per our a cappella and Star Trek discussion. Yeah. ⁓ but one of our absolutely coolest friends, ⁓ Global Music Collective: Yeah. Today. Today's the day. We have another friend. It's not just you and me. Not a high bar to clear. Yeah. But kate: Is joining us in just a few moments. And let me just start by saying that I met both Richie and this unnamed mystery guest online ⁓ for some cultural cultural diplomacy programs that we were doing. And ⁓ when I met them in real life, ⁓ I believe I met the two of you in the Dubai airport. That was our first actual human meet and greet. We have a picture that I will put on ⁓ something somewhere somehow of the three of us with that yellow teddy bear statue in the Dubai airport. Yep. And yeah, it's it is it is crazy because because after that, so ⁓ Richie and this unnamed guest were already they had already done a program together in Nigeria. They went on this like ⁓ like vacation hiatus in Thailand together. I think you would all Global Music Collective: Right. Yep. That's crazy. Ha ha ha. Yeah, we did. kate: Also, both been in India already at this point. I'm sure you guys will talk about it a lot and I'll feel anyway. So I met them and they're both like these hip-hop dudes. Look at Richie's hip-hop hat today, you know? Like, yeah, I well, and it's it's fair. But so anyway, so they're sitting there being all cool. We arrive in Kampala, Uganda, together, and we're all just sitting around having a Nile beer. And I felt super intimidated. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. I wore my hip hop hat today in honor of our guest. kate: So anyway, why am I telling this story before Carl comes? There's no point in me saying this. I'll just say we met in Africa, the three of us, and since then have had many fun, zany adventures all over the world. He's just I bel I believe one of my favorite people that I worked with in cultural diplomacy next to you, Richie. And ⁓ yeah, I'm just really excited. So why don't I s just stop talking? Like stop talking. Global Music Collective: No, keep going. ⁓ so I just got a text and he has to download a new version of Chrome in order to film this. So it'll be just a moment. kate: Great. Yeah, just just wait until you meet him and you see how technologically ⁓ like set up he is. It cracks me up that he's Global Music Collective: I think that's a good that's a good lead in because you look at our backgrounds, Kate. You're there in your room, which you know, it's you've positioned stuff, you like there's a plant in the background, I think. It You didn't. It's just naturally like director of photography, well done. kate: I'm in my bedroom. There's my keyboard. There's my bed. I didn't position that. That's the plant in my living room. You know, for our first episode I pulled that plant into that little spot in my bedroom. But then I was like, I'ma just be me. I'm not gonna pull the plant in the room for every single week. We're we're gonna be real. Ugh. I got my musical theater book. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we're gonna have to do something about your background, Richard. Global Music Collective: You're you're like, this is not authentic. We're going to this plant belongs out there. Yeah. Well, I went with blue and Yeah, look, one of these days I'll add something to I thought about it, but then I was looking around today, there's not much here to add. I want one of those cool like podcaster neon signs that shows like Richie Robot or Bz entry points. I don't know, something kate: Well, we should That's good idea. That's a very good idea. Global Music Collective: Something real snazzy, you know? S something real slick. kate: You are a snazzy slick kinda guy. You know, Richie, you're you should you should ⁓ give me a little update and everyone a little update, 'cause you're about to pack your shit in a little in your in your car max, which everyone listening should remember, and you're about to drive across the country to a new home. Global Music Collective: Yeah. In my Car Max. We are. We are moving to ⁓ Los Angeles where we will be pursuing a life in acting and music. We being me and my wife. No. My my wife is she's an actor and a writer and I am, as you can probably tell, not an amazing actor. I have acted before. I've you know, I've got I've got some chops. I'm certainly not like ⁓ you know, Scorsese's favorite go to guy. But you know, I did a a mall and the night visitors once in kate: Wait, are you pursuing a life in a ⁓ okay. You're not bad. You know, yeah, yeah. Global Music Collective: in college. Anyways. Yeah, so we're moving to Los Angeles. I am going to be, you know, trying to build up our network with Global Music Collective. I have my kids T V show. ⁓ I someday would love to be producing stuff and there's just so much to do out there. And then my wife is she's an actor and a writer. And it's the place to be. So we got a car. We're gonna pack it up with all of our toiletries and and clothes that fit kate: Toiletries. ⁓ Maria's good with toiletries. I remember. So I went to visit Richie and Maria. So Maria's from Australia, for those of you listening. Maria is Richie's wife. And ⁓ I hadn't gotten to meet her all these years that I've been friends and business partners with Richie. Maria's been in Australia. It's been kind of hard to I was living in Mumbai. It was hard to find a way to meet each other. And ⁓ Richie, you just do your thing and get Carl in this room. Global Music Collective: I'm trying to yeah, let me navigate it. kate: Anyway, ⁓ I was very excited for my first opportunity to meet Maria when Richie and Maria moved to the States. I don't know, I guess it was about six months ago now. And I flew to Colorado to meet them, and we all went on a little road trip up to Richie's dad's cabin up in the mountains. Maria and Richie and I. We had some great times with lots of beers. There was some slappin' card game that we played, and we were up in altitude, and I like hit my thumb. slapping cards on this card game with Rich. Do you remember that? My thumb like that's it. Taco Chi Yeah, Taco Cat Go cheese pizza. That was so much fun. But anyway, my thumb like swole. Got swole. My thumb got swole. And Maria had all of these really nice ⁓ bathroom d ⁓ toiletries, I suppose is the word, to like help me. She had all of the lotions and the creams and the the salves, that's the word. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Taco Cat goat cheese pizza. You know the game? Gus wall, bro. Yeah. Salves. Salve. Yeah. Yeah, she's great with all that. We have plenty of salves and creams and whatever you Yep. So we're gonna pack up our salves and our everything and we have a TV that we're bringing and we have a lovely friend of ours. Shout out to Pauline Egan who is also from Australia, but she is a she's a film producer in her own right and a musician and actually does amazing work in Africa where kate: Lots of salves. Global Music Collective: ⁓ her group is called Face Africa, so I'll shout out them right now. She's gonna let us stay at her place while she's out there in Africa doing some work and it's gonna be a like a really nice landing spot for us. ⁓ Let's see, what is Carl saying? Trying Then we'll be on the on the big screen and big yeah. kate: And then you're gonna be in the big city. And Hollywood. I lived in Los Angeles for five years. That was a that was a great time. I had a great time living there. You know Yeah. Global Music Collective: Invite. It's a cool city. If honestly it's like the worst city I'm going there and I'm trashing it already. I think it's not a great city to visit as a tourist, to be really honest. It's hard to get around. The big landmarks are not like what you think they would be. I think it's it's much better a place for working and networking and I mean yeah, and living and and once you kind of get into the scene there, I feel like it's it's a better place to be. New York City, I think, is way better for tourism 'cause you got kate: Mm. Yeah. Yeah, I totally agree. ⁓ I love New York. Do you know I lived I lived in New York for fifteen years? Do you know that about me? Yeah. Yeah. New York is you know, the closest place that I would say feels like home next to Alaska, which is kind of funny because I've lived in so many different places since then and you haven't known me since I lived there. But New York is like one of the most foundational parts of my entire life. I love New York City and ⁓ Global Music Collective: I didn't realize it was that long. I knew you live there, but kate: I feel like constantly in my life I'm wanting to get back there. I'm just talking. This is none of this. None of this is going on. Hmm. We need Carl. Global Music Collective: Banter. None of it's going in. None of it's well, I'm moving to Los Angeles. You have lived in New York City. You live in Austin now. These are you live in Los Angeles too. I'm these are all cities that really pride themselves on music. Austin calls themselves the live music capital of the world. New York City is obviously renowned for theater and other music. LA is film and music. Is there a best? I mean, Nashville is probably on the list too. They, you know. kate: I lived in Los Angeles too. Global Music Collective: They tout themselves as a big music town. Is there somewhere that's like this is the music place, or is that changing? Do you think? kate: I think that's changing. I don't know. I mean, I th I love Austin and I have to say I'm really getting to know Austin a lot better. I'm pretty new here, to be honest, and my family's been here for a long time, so I've known it and I've been here part-time peripherally for a while. But ⁓ it's only been recently that I've been trying to actually get to know Austin. And I will say I used to kind of scoff at the live music Capital of the World World title because, you know, I lived in New York, I lived in LA, I lived in Bombay. Like there's Global Music Collective: It's like world's greatest coffee or it's Yeah, yeah, okay. Have you tried all the pizza? You did yeah. kate: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, world's greatest pizza. You did it! ⁓ but anyway, ⁓ I have to say I'm I'm very there are things that are really special about Austin's music scene. It's it's ⁓ really well supported by the civic infrastructure here, which is I think kind of unusual. And the community here is really people are really passionate. Whether they're passionate about ⁓ it's not all just musicians. Anyway, Austin is great. That being said, ⁓ I don't think any one of those cities can claim the title as best because they're all so different. I mean, for me, New York is like when I think about New York, I think it's just concentration of excellence. Like just it's such there's so many people there, and there's such a high concentrated of people at the very top of their game. You know, like if I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere. And I Global Music Collective: Mm. ⁓ Kate, I know New York, New York. I am a karaoke winner with that song. I'm gonna bring it up every episode now. My claim to fame. Anyway, sorry. Make it about me. kate: ⁓ that's right. That's right. He's the karaoke winner. No, that's it. I mean no, I loved New York. I lived there when I sang opera and I sang I I got to I got to achieve my dream of being at a Broadway show. And ⁓ I think that since leaving New York, I have met the most amazing artists and musicians and theater people. But there's something about just being in a city where everyone's just kind of like on top of each other in this little tiny space that makes New York a different kind of magic. But then LA's got this like really slick magic. It's so beautiful. Every every everyone is like really good at the the show business game, you know what I mean? And I don't mean that in a mean way. It's really impressive. At the jazz scene in LA is, I think, almost one of the best I've seen anywhere. ⁓ And then Austin is so funky and quirky and it still is and ⁓ there's all kinds of interesting new stuff happening here. I don't know Nashville. I've never been to Nashville, you probably know better than me. But I'm sure Carl would want Detroit in this discussion. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. That's true. Carlos rep in Detroit. And I did like Nashville. I actually liked Memphis better. We have some friends that are performers in Nashville and a couple of bands that I know that from there. And it is it's a good city for music, certainly, but I always felt like Memphis, if you had to go like pick a Tennessee spot, it was more I don't know, it it it didn't feel like people were kinda getting pushed out of the city and kate: Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Nashville is getting so big and expensive, which is crazy 'cause you think of like Nashville, you think of this like kinda just country spot that doesn't really have anything. You think of the Ryman, you think of like, ⁓ it's just a it's just a chill place, but it is I think it's it's getting big for its britches to borrow a a term you might hear in Nashville. Nah, I don't I don't know, maybe it's the right way to move, but I don't know. In the bottle. Anyway. kate: Yeah. Two big first bridges. On tap in the Yeah. That's interesting. That's a g I that's been my judgmental impression from afar. It's just like I see a lot of influencer hats and a lot of, you know, ⁓ I don't know, I I'm f I'm kind of full of crap when I say that stuff though, 'cause I really just I think it's just I'm down with anyone Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: being any way they want and making any kind of music they want, as long as it's authentic. And sometimes I feel like places will become successful or a vibe of a place will become successful and then it becomes too monetized or too everyone's trying to play the role. Like New Orleans, what I love about New Orleans is they have an incredible music scene like Dixie Jazz and all kinds of amazing music has come and still comes out of New Orleans. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: And yet I don't feel like I've ever met someone from New Orleans who seems like they're trying to put on a certain role of like, I'm a New Orleans musician. You know what I mean? Is he here? ⁓ okay. Global Music Collective: Sorry, Carl's call, let me let me pick this up. Hello, sir. Okay. I'm in Riverside Studio thing and I I use Safari, so it keeps trying to keep throwing me in a Safari instead of ⁓ instead of Chrome. Instead of Chrome. Okay. so I have a window And Riverside is on that. How do I join? I assumed when you click the link it would just take you to our little conversation we have, which is where Kate is now. Right. It takes me to ⁓ it opens up the thing in Safari. Uh-huh. Every time I click the link it opens it in Safari. It opens in Safari. Okay. That and it and s Riverside does not allow Safari, so ⁓ shoot. can I let's see if I can just s send you the link and then you can like copy paste it into Yes, let's try that. You send me the actual link. Okay, sorry dude. No worries. Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm mm mm This would have been smart for me to send yesterday. Yeah, there'd have been some other issue. Yeah, of course. Yeah. Alright, does this work? Stop turning into less here, I'll like put spaces in there. There's two s there we go. There's two spaces. You gotta r delete the two spaces. The space after the ⁓ in between dot and com. Yeah. And then H P A Yes, there's another one there. Okay, cool, got it. Yeah. Let's see. Come on, magic link. kate: Come. Global Music Collective: ⁓ I I didn't K could hear me. kate: Stop talking shit about me, Richie. Global Music Collective: I got Kate in one ear, I got Carl in another ear. This is everything I've always dreamed of. Super high tech now. Super high tech. Services come on. kate: And we're recording all of it. Global Music Collective: the one be amazing be the one be the miracle ⁓ click icon a wow mic and camera max it looks like it's working that's a good sound okay kate: On tap in the can or in the bottle. ⁓ Global Music Collective: I'll send it to your email too if you need that. Come on, Riverside, you can do it. ⁓ my gosh, I don't use my computer enough. I don't have lost all my smart necessities. Okay, so there's that. So we need to kate: All his smartness He done lost it all. Global Music Collective: Kate's just making faces at me on kate: I didn't know you could see me. ⁓ well I knew it was being recorded. I thought that we would both get to see it later, but Global Music Collective: I can and it's all being recorded. So that's perfect. So it looks like everything should be allowed. kate: ⁓ tap. Global Music Collective: Get back to it, seems now that I've allowed all the now you're allowed everything. kate: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: Bectored arise. This is complicated. I didn't think it was gonna be this. Taking is available. Thank you, Felix. ⁓ no, I allowed notifications, so now it's out of control. You'll never hear the end of it. I coin two. kate: Амсок. I can feel him almost here. Global Music Collective: Looks like we have ⁓ stop it. We might be good. No way. Microphone, camera. Check one two. Using headphones, no. Join studio. ⁓ Josh. This is amazing. kate: No He's here, he's here, he's here, he's here, he's here, he's in the room, he's in the room, he's in the room. Global Music Collective: Yeah, boy INVISIBLE: I made it. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Jeez, I feel like I'm now a computer tech IT guy. I am the best IT guy in my house right now, sitting in this particular chair. Right. Dang it. Hey. Right. Global Music Collective: Hacker. You beat the internet. Nope, Marcy's not home, is she is, ladies and gentlemen, the world's greatest and most see-through and most traveled and coolest guy we know. DJ Invisible is in the house with sound effects, I'm guessing. kate: Ugh here he is. He has arrived. INVISIBLE: So many sound can you hear the sound effects? 'Cause kate: I could hear the drum roll. But it's not as loud as I want it to be. Global Music Collective: You could hear I crank that drum roll. Don't touch it. INVISIBLE: ⁓ I don't have I don't I'm not gonna mess with anything else. We're gonna let it just live. kate: ⁓ my god. Wait, Richie, did you say the most see through? ⁓ 'cause he's invisible. Wow. Okay. Global Music Collective: Right. He's invisible. It was super clever. kate: Yeah, never at all. Not at all. INVISIBLE: I like it though. I mean, I am always game for an invisible joke, at least once or twice a day. I'm a fan. The best ones. Yes, indeed. The best ones are when they come from like much, much older people and they're like, I can't see you. And I'm like, ⁓ you got me. You're not invisible. ⁓ yes. Yeah, that's good stuff. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. Ha ha ha Global Music Collective: Yeah. Or your eyes are I can see what's going on. At least I picked Richie Robot, which usually ⁓ people ask me to do the robot and my robot's pretty pathetic. So I either need to learn how to do it or kate: I don't know, Richie. I've heard some good robot from you after a couple beers in Austin, Texas. I'm just gonna say that one. And I need you all to know that I, my very cool stage name of Kate Bass, ⁓ I get largemouth bass a lot. And it may it fills me with joy every time. It makes me so happy. INVISIBLE: Too Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yeah, well INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: That's what people go to, they're like, Hey, largemouth bass. At least like kate: Music play Carl, you gotta turn the volume up somehow. I I know, don't fiddle with the I know, I know, I know, I know. But it's yeah. INVISIBLE: I don't ⁓ I yeah. Yeah, there's something ⁓ well. It's when I came over from like everything worked perfectly on Zoom during COVID six years ago. Global Music Collective: Who knows? kate: Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Now you've updated. And INVISIBLE: Now I've updated like software updates and things have changed. And now I I do still let's see if this still works. Let's see. Can we show my so I have my co star today? I'm all World Cuped out, as you can tell. So I brought my co star, the actual World Cup Ball is sitting on the couch there. Yeah, his name is Bali. Bali lives like yeah. So Bali is ⁓ yeah, that's Bali sitting on a nice velvet ⁓ Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Forget Wilson. kate: It does have a name? Bolly. ⁓ my god. Makes me so happy. Global Music Collective: Do you have a l is that like a little seat there you have for Bali? Like a throne? INVISIBLE: Pillow. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Dude, I'm in like a bedroom with a keyboard and my bed and like a quilt. You've got like Nikes and slick Rick and guitars. Like you're the coolest person in the world. What? INVISIBLE: ⁓ I have a hundred percent gone out of control. My ⁓ my situation here is ⁓ yeah. This is the only this is the only sanctuary in my house where I can go and hide from everybody. My studio has a lock on the door, so I can see them sometimes right behind me. I'm like, mm, too loud in here. I didn't hear you were there. We called you. I was in the middle of something, just couldn't hear the phone ring. Global Music Collective: The camera's all over. kate: Live on air. Man. Too busy. I love it. I feel like Carl, I just we've we started a podcast. This is our third episode and I just now got a light for my computer. So I like you've you're way ahead of me. Way ahead. INVISIBLE: During during covet I had nothing to do. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: I I Amazon it got to the point where the Amazon delivery guy, Frank, was like part of the family. Frank would show up to their Frank, you want a coffee or anything? And at first he was like, you know, everybody was like freaking out, everyone was nervous. And then we would have social diff distancing where he would pull up and like, Bro, the rest of your deliveries for the rest of the day are gonna be late 'cause you've been talking to me for a good twenty minutes. So yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. You knew it was okay. ⁓ He had to go quarantine after visiting Olier's house. kate: You guys, I don't know if we have any reason to put this up in the future, but I just need to say I have been racking my brain for years. When we all met each other, we started a WhatsApp group. I'll tell the story in a second. We can tell the story of how we met Carl, but I we had a WhatsApp group that was titled FFBF. And I have been racking my brain. For maybe a year trying to figure out what that stood for. And I just remembered because of Amazon delivery Frank. That it was for Frank by Frank. And I don't know why. But now I know. I know it was Fubu, but I don't remember who the actu I think Frank was like someone who I this yeah. Global Music Collective: It's foo boo, but ⁓ okay, all right. INVISIBLE: Yeah, we can't we can't e now that this is on a podcast and it's gonna be public, we can't tell that story. Yeah, that's gotta be a that dies with the three of us. That yeah, that was kate: We can't say that story. Yeah, it dies with the three of us. Yeah. Now that we're on our our wildly successful podcast that has sixteen Instagram followers, but you know, it take it takes time, guys. It takes time. So, ⁓ Global Music Collective: Yeah. Buffer buffer. INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. Stop it. It does. And hope hopefully this is the episode that ⁓ you guys can say, you know what? We had done three episodes and now we are still at ⁓ yeah, we're we're at four episodes now. We had one with a dude that we were friends with, but it was stupid and we had to delete all of it. It was an hour of useless content. A hour of inside jokes. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Exactly. kate: No, we're viral. Global Music Collective: We lost all of our votes. Yep. Well fifteen minutes of tech support and then soccer reference. That's it. kate: No. Not possible. I it Okay, so I'm gonna I'm gonna just introduce Carl a little bit, and Richie, you can also help, but I'm gonna just roll this, roll this, get this train rolling, because otherwise we're never we're never gonna reach the platform. ⁓ so Carl, DJ Invisible, is ⁓ an I don't even know where to begin with this person. I met him. ⁓ I was saying earlier, Richie met him before me in Nigeria. I met him in Uganda and When the two of them had already kind of established their brohood, and ⁓ here I was this little ⁓ classically trained opera singing white girl, like sitting at a bar drinking a Nile with these two guys in their hip hop hats, and I felt so stupid. ⁓ but immediately I just bonded so hard with both of you. And I remember some really great stories. Like I remember and I'll we'll talk about it in a minute. I remember our safari in Uganda that Carl slept through half of it and Richie and I were freaking out. And I remember ⁓ we all put on a performance. Carl and Richie and me put on a performance with these wonderful Ugandan musicians for the US ambassador to Uganda, Natalie Brown, ambassador Natalie Brown. INVISIBLE: Sorry. Global Music Collective: Long flight. kate: And it was this high profile performance for the Fourth of July celebration in Uganda. And I have videos of Richard dancing really well to like Whitney Houston as Carl was wearing a full US flag suit and mixing like yeah. So I have and I believe along with our WhatsApp group with the the aforementioned ⁓ mystery word or whatever it's called abbreviation. INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: I also believe we have this inside joke of a hot dog. And what also makes me laugh really hard is I have no idea really why. I think there were hot dog pins at this Fourth of July celebration and we all decided to wear them. And it's probably really immature, so I won't go further, but we are three successful professionals who have traveled the world and ⁓ toured with ambassadors and we still make hot dog jokes, is where I'm gonna go with that. But anyway, ⁓ Carl is ⁓ extremely s famous and successful DJ and Richie can tell us more about that because he's actually ⁓ performed with the Invisibles, but ⁓ I think there's all kinds of hip hop luminaries, right? Like Exhibit and all these all these way cooler people than me that you've worked with. Yes. Richie, can you give the more like impressive introduction of Carl? Global Music Collective: can't well, you can see behind him exhibit's holding the record the gold record right behind his head like a halo. It's the heavenly Carl. kate: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like a halo, hello. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah. there's another one over there too. Global Music Collective: Yep. kate: ⁓ shooting mode. ⁓ To match your creative vision. I don't know, man. INVISIBLE: What did I do? Out here we're gonna do this. Global Music Collective: See Look at this. Look at this. First of all kate: Ha ha ha ⁓ INVISIBLE: I have no idea what I touched. I should not I should not have touched something. Which is like it's like the rules, right? You don't touch things when things are working right. Yeah. I don't. It's like, yeah, and this is probably gonna freak out because it's not supposed to be on I don't yeah. I'd go over there and sit on the couch with ⁓ sit over there with Bali. Global Music Collective: Yeah. And you got so many buttons, how do you not touch? kate: Yeah. With Bali. Global Music Collective: But this cameras are killing me. There's gonna be a one like up in your backyard. So Carl Carl DJ Olier, DJ Invisible, is he has the key to the city, I believe, if I'm not mistaken. of Detroit. This guy has been repping the city longer than Ford itself. And INVISIBLE: Yeah. Why is there a kate: To the city of Where? Where Why he's not that old, Richie. Global Music Collective: He's not that old. ⁓ no, I mean he has just been a luminary and an amazing representative and musician and artist in Detroit for for his whole life, basically. This guy has has toured and produced and collabed. He's in he's in an exhibit music video that I so this guy can act, you know. I've seen it all. I've seen it all from this guy. INVISIBLE: Yeah, we're not ⁓ kate: Aha. Global Music Collective: Now he tea he's touring with D twelve. He was Exhibits DJ for a while. He's like he knows everybody. Everybody knows him. And I got the pleasure to travel with him to a couple different countries. ⁓ Nigeria, Uganda, Bangladesh we went to. and then we had that amazing moment in Thailand where they just gave us a break between shows and they said they said INVISIBLE: I was fine. kate: Bangladesh, that's right. INVISIBLE: Right. Global Music Collective: You can have like a hundred dollars a day for a hotel, which in Thailand is you can get a villa. So we each yeah, we we we got our own villas. We showed up on like a Friday afternoon and we both looked at each other and said, I'll see you in five days And we both just slept in our little little huts for the next five days. Anyway, yeah. kate: Ha ha ha. You like didn't talk to each other at all. INVISIBLE: ⁓ Global Music Collective: But I mean where do you stop with this guy? There's so much to talk about. He's toured everywhere. Last time I was when I was living in Melbourne, he just happened to come out a couple of times on tour just casually. And ⁓ yeah, it's been a pleasure getting to know you and and performing next to you, producing next to you, and here you are today, repping Bali, Detroit. Talking about playlists. kate: Talking about playlists. Talking about playlists. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Talk about playlists. That was exciting. So I don't know. It is an honor to be here with both of you guys. And it like, yeah, I I agree, Kate. Some of the stories, like, you know, it's been a couple of years, so it's probably better for the viewers that it we've had some years to forget some of the nonsense. Cause you're right. When we did the ⁓ the fourth of July show at the ambassador's house. All three of us walked in there like, ⁓ my gosh, this is probably the coolest thing. Like we're you know, all professional, you know, we've traveled to her, but there's certain phone calls you get that are they're humbling. Like, I don't I've I've been in front of thousands of people, but I've never performed in front of multiple ambassadors in a foreign country. And ⁓ I call her Natalie, right? You know, because yeah, she ⁓ my goodness. ⁓ Natalie, ⁓ kate: ⁓ yeah, she loved you. Sh yeah. You yeah. Global Music Collective: First name. INVISIBLE: And I'm only calling her Natalie because ⁓ I'll probably never see her again. But she and we're all gonna get a we're all gonna get a private phone call and end up in trouble in some shape or fashion. Yeah, but when she sent, like after the performance, she was so cool. She invited us to dinner. We had dinner at her house. We got the tour of the ambassador's house, and it was awesome. And then when she sent the thank you letter. kate: She's not listening to our podcast. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yeah. INVISIBLE: She sent me a thank you letter that said Dr. Invisible. And I'm pretty sure that if an ambassador of a foreign land calls you Dr. Anything, that is your official title from there on out. So I I went to college. Yeah, I I went, I was there for pay intuition. I I just I attended Eastern Michigan University. kate: Yeah, yeah. Who needs a university? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Drove by a college. INVISIBLE: ⁓ you know, I I pledge the fraternity. I love I am a eagle through and through, but I was dubbed doctor in Uganda by ambassador. So thank you. Thank you. Right? ⁓ yeah, I want to see. kate: Woop woop. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Natalie Brown University. That's amazing. kate: Wait, you were a frat boy? That's fascinating. Richie, were y you were also a frat boy. Global Music Collective: So you got the I was more a sorority boy. kate: ⁓ you've got your frat up there. ⁓ wow, look at that. I don't know anything about Fratz. I went to music school and played like, you know, Beethoven in practice rooms and was very yeah, not it I don't know anything about this, but I you guys are too cool for me. Yet again. Yet again. INVISIBLE: ⁓ Global Music Collective: I gotta th I gotta throw two more s things in there. We actually so Carl has so many connections. He put together an amazing hip hop group called The Invisibles. INVISIBLE: The invincible. Global Music Collective: And it includes some of his amazing crew from Detroit. Ms. Corona, who is this just incredible rapper and producer. She makes her own beats now. She can sing. ⁓ Kari Kimani Turner, the dude is just he runs a nonprofit and is a great rapper and writer and performer and just one of the coolest guys. INVISIBLE: He wrote the Ten Crack Commandments for the notorious big. Like it was a it was like a quiet thing for years. You know, he wrote he wrote it. He was a writer. So when I first met him, he was a writer and he was writing pieces for like The Source magazine and and Vibe and all the early, you know, other nineties hip hop publications. And he wrote an article where he ⁓ interviewed excuse me, ⁓ like this notorious drug dealer. kate: Whoa. Wow. INVISIBLE: And Kari wrote out this amazing piece and it was titled The Ten Crack Commandments. Biggie used that as the template for the Ten Crack Commandments that he ended up recording on an album that went multi-platinum. And all these rappers like dissed Kari because they said that Kari was, you know, preying on a a a dead man and like, no, no, it's the way business works. It's publishing. Like he wrote it, somebody copied it. You get paid for that. So Kari wrote this and then it was just like Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Wow. INVISIBLE: You know, Carrie has like golden platinum plaques hanging up. And then that album was ⁓ that song was used as the ten dual commandments in Hamilton. So he went from having a he went from having a platinum record to having a Tony and a Grammy and Oscar. Like that is like that's amazing. I think so, because kate: Yes! Bringin' it to me. That's so cool. Global Music Collective: Wait, is he a is he an e got then? Or is he close to it? He's a got. Grammy Oscar and a Tony. kate: He's a got. INVISIBLE: The guy. Okay. kate: Yeah. I mean unless he has an Emmy. INVISIBLE: No, I guess it I don't know if it yeah. kate: I think got sounds cooler than ego anyway, so INVISIBLE: Right. Global Music Collective: Just for the people that don't know, as an Emmy, a Grammy, and Oscar and a Tony. Those are all the like the major awards for what is it? TV, music, stage, and what am I missing? Film. But yeah, like, and he keeps it quiet too. He he wouldn't mention it. Yeah, you do. And then ⁓ INVISIBLE: Right. Film, yep. So cool. You gotta pry it out of them. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah, you grabbed ⁓ Mark, who is another DJ piano player, and Hans. We did a little tour with him. We got to go to India, we got to go to Ethiopia and Senegal and Guinea-Bissau on these American Music Abroad tours. And yeah, that's it's been cool working with you, man. INVISIBLE: Yeah. ⁓ my goodness. Yeah. Like i it w it was ⁓ dubbed ⁓ Hiplomacy by Hiplomacy by Mr. John Ferguson and it yeah. ⁓ my goodness, what was his stage name? ⁓ Global Music Collective: Diplomacy. Yeah. ⁓ kate: ⁓ wow. I remember him talking about poppin' and locking and being like, ⁓ cool. INVISIBLE: Jazzy Global Music Collective: DJ Jazzy John or something, I don't know. INVISIBLE: something something ridiculous, but he yeah, he was he was the coolest guy. And he would, you know, he had this awesome vision of ⁓ doing using hip hop to, you know, bridge some of these gaps. And it did. Like I I was already touring and by going to some of these countries and doing these hip hop programs and finding all these cool artists these cool artists all over the world, like it was ⁓ that was definitely a a Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: An awesome career shift that I really enjoyed for years. ⁓ and it's the other cool thing is when you get chance to travel, you meet all these cool people, like you guys. I will see you all again. You know, I I will definitely see you guys again. But then you see like the the relationships that we've a we've been able to make with the foreign artists, like the the young upcoming, you know, they have the the Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: Access to the internet and they're seeing all the glitz and glamour of life and they want this amazing musical career and we're able to go in and sprinkle a little bit of knowledge that we may have and help them at least guide them in the direction to where they can monetize it. So you know that has been like an awesome journey that you know unfortunately we're on we're the pause button has been depressed. Yeah, but ⁓ kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah, been mashed and broken and thrown away. kate: ⁓ It'll come back. We'll find a way. Yeah. INVISIBLE: It'll yeah, it definitely will. But I mean the the still being able to keep up with folks in like my inbox every day is is getting at least one or two songs from somebody that we met somewhere on our journey that put out some music. And when I tell you, like some of it is awesome. Like some of the like do you remember El Nayan? kate: Yeah, yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah yes, Elvis. Yeah. INVISIBLE: dude was talented like he made a song and i was trying to find it when you when you when you told me about this opportunity to come on talk to you guys i was trying to find the song that you guys did so kate kate we had a ⁓ we had a song you know we were all you know you know how you get to these these programs and they divide everybody into groups richie got like the all stars of the group and it was like Global Music Collective: Okay. INVISIBLE: Okay, so who's really, really talented, who's already established with a bunch of followers, already knows how to do this, that, and other. You guys go with Richie. Is anybody trying to be a DJ? ⁓ you guys go with Carl. Yeah, he just no Yeah. You play the you play the flute and the flugel horn. Do you have a flute and a flugel horn with you? No. Go with Carl. Yeah. Are you tone deaf? Carl is, so you'll be fine soon. Global Music Collective: Go every No you're not? Okay, yeah you go car anyway. No. Good. ⁓ yeah. kate: Most Flugelhorn players who are our podcast fans are gonna be very offended. Just saying. INVISIBLE: Well, not well, not to offend the flugelhorn players. Most people don't have a flugel horn. Like, there's not right. You learned how to play the flu. I don't even know what the flugel horn looks like. It just sounded very Dr. Sucian. So I'll stop before I actually because there are flugelhorn players who are amazingly way more talented. ⁓ There it is right now. I have Global Music Collective: So a lot sitting around. kate: Just kidding. Listen, we can re we can rage bait the Flugelhorn players so we can get more exposure for our podcast. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: I have always wanted like musician beef, being that I'm a DJ and can't play anything well enough to call myself that. So it's me against all the flugelhorn players. I challenge you all to stage beef. ⁓ So it's like a trumpet. ⁓ okay. So you might act so that joke is gonna fall flat because you might actually have a flugelhorn. I was thinking of like a baritone or something big and bulky that most people are not gonna carry around with them. Okay. Global Music Collective: Mm mm. There we go. Yeah. kate: There we there's a flugel horn. It's basically a trumpet. Yeah. It's like a deep trumpet. Like a sousaphone, I think, is what you were thinking. INVISIBLE: Yeah, sure. Sure. ⁓ my god, I have told I have used flugelhorn in so many jokes and now everyone has that it makes sense. People look at me like Global Music Collective: Sure. Gotta be the Susaphone. kate: Yeah. Ha ha. Global Music Collective: It looks like it's harder to carry. It like the trumpets a little skinnier, so this you gotta have a bigger case. INVISIBLE: Well small yeah, but kate: Flugelhorn is random, so it's funny for a joke. It's just you happen to be talking to the ⁓ annoying classical music nerd, so INVISIBLE: It sounds funny. But right. And a lot of times I'm in a room with actual musicians, and I'll say Flugelhorn, and I'm like, yeah, Carl, I have one of those in the trunk of my card. Yeah. So I did get a chance to play. So ⁓ here, a little bit of backstory of actually what I'm doing now. Okay, so ⁓ I'm still traveling with D12. So D12 has a new record that just came out this past week, and it is Global Music Collective: Yeah, that's right. kate: Carl, you're a musician. Anyway. Global Music Collective: Yes. INVISIBLE: Dope. It is like it is such a dope record because a lot of the songs will remind you of like that D twelve comedy. And some of the songs are lighthearted. There's some songs that are a little over the top. But as far as lyricism, ⁓ Swifty and Keniva like are amazing. Like if you listen to in my opinion, if you listen to a lot of the older D twelve stuff, the two of them lyrically were always up there, right? So Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: They put together this record because they're the still the two that are still touring under the D twelve banner. And the record's got like ⁓ there's an MM song in it. Proof pat rest of rest in peace. Proof. They have some proof unreleased music that's on there. ⁓ I was first asked to come in and do a song with where ⁓ was on it, and they were like, We need you to do the cuts on the song, and they played it, and I was like, ⁓ my goodness, I'm getting ready to actually do the cuts on this ⁓ song. That's dope. So I did the cuts or whatever. Global Music Collective: ⁓ wow. kate: Wow. INVISIBLE: And then I had to come back to do cuts on a song with ⁓ Swift Knive Exhibit, Be Real from Cypress Hill, did those cuts. That was the first single called Tear It Down that came out. And we did a music video for it, and it's super dope. ⁓ then I went back in the studio and I was like, okay, what's the what's on the agenda today? And it was like me, Method Man, Swift, and Kineva. And I'm like, kate: Sh Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Wow. Global Music Collective: Might have to check my schedule. INVISIBLE: Let me think about it. I don't know if I'm I don't know. I don't mean. kate: So cool. INVISIBLE: ⁓ excuse me, Mr. M-E-T-H-O-D man, but I'll be putting scratches at the end of the song, mind you. And the song it came out, it's crazy. Like when you get into the car and you listen to your stuff that you've done and you're proud of it, ⁓ that is nut that is the best feeling on in the world. Like I'll I'll be driving home from my my new gig that I have right now and kate: Ha ha ha INVISIBLE: I'll roll the windows down and play stuff that I'm on and I'm like proud of it. And you know, it's just a whole different awesome feeling. The cool thing is, is now it used to be cool to hear like your song come on the radio, but now that we're we're our own radio, you know, it doesn't hit the same way, but I'll put it in a Spotify playlist on Shuffle. And then when it comes on, I'm like, ⁓ that's me. kate: ⁓ Yeah. Global Music Collective: Right. kate: Right. Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Hey Carl. INVISIBLE: Yeah, I can look at people I can look at people next to me. That's me on the radio. And they're they're they're looking at me like, Bro, I anytime, literally, it's your own Spotify list. ⁓ my goodness. So ⁓ Global Music Collective: That's me. You can play that, yeah. That's cool. kate: Carl, can I ask you, what is a c just for 'cause I think a for people who don't know much about I don't know, DJ stuff, can you explain what a cut is when you're saying you're doing cuts for these people, what that means? INVISIBLE: ⁓ so I'm doing I'm doing the scratching on the record. So it's just it's funny when you hear people go ricca ricca ricca ricca. That's what I'm doing. I'm doing the ricca ricca ricca. So I've I'm manipulating the turntables. You can't even see it. This is bad. I have so many cameras. You can't see the one thing I do. I'll show we'll we'll we'll you I'll send you a video. You can edit a video in there. But kate: Yeah, you can kinda see it. Global Music Collective: So kate: All right. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah, I scratch records for a living. That is actually I make noise and scratch records and scream really, really loud and obnoxiously. That is my actual job title. And ⁓ so well, my new gig right now. So, like I said, I'm doing the ⁓ the shows with D12. We're ⁓ we're doing some some some you know touring and and and getting ready for this record ⁓ to just blow up and go crazy so I can retire and put like giant records on the walls with my face on them. But in the meantime kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: The Detroit Princess Riverboat has been my summer gig for the past fifteen years. And it is always lined up perfectly where I can tour dur during the colder months. And then when I get back to Detroit, I've got this gig on a riverboat. And it started out where I was just DJing. And I would DJ for two hours and I was usually home by ten or eleven o'clock at night. So it was the best DJ gig that was steady. Every Friday and Saturday, I would go spend, you know, Global Music Collective: Perfect DJ gig. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: The boat leaves at seven, comes back at nine. I DJ from seven to nine, and that is that's my day. I I'm entertaining for two days. So I I used to joke that it was my Vegas show. So then last year, the the boat started to get more popular with bigger groups. So we're putting, you know, a thousand people on this boat. So they have a Motown band that's on one floor. The Motown band will do a show. And then the Motown band got so popular. They didn't Motown band had to do two shows during one cruise. So they would have 500 people on a floor and then another floor with 400 people, and they would have me start DJing and then flip to the other floor. So I would entertain the people for on one floor, and then the band would come down and I would go up and entertain the people on the other floor. And I started looking at it like while people are eating, they don't want to DJ scratching records and playing loud, obnoxious music while they're trying to eat and have conversation. So I'm like. kate: Whoa I'm scared. INVISIBLE: I'm going to turn this into Carl's Dinner Theater. And I did it, I did it as a joke. So as a joke, I started, you know, I welcome people to the boat and I walk out and you know, I'm the host of the tonight's entertainment. And the staff is looking at me like, you're the DJ. You're nobody's host. Right. Get back, play some music. kate: Yes. ⁓ my god. Hello. ⁓ Global Music Collective: Go back behind your turntables. kate: Doing a monologue. INVISIBLE: And then one day I went I created this whole different routine. It's like cruise ship carls mixed with Big Bob, the used car salesman. And I go out and I start telling like just some lightweight dad jokes and I'm welcoming people to the boat and I run through the safety protocol on the boat and I'm adding jokes and stuff here and there. And then ⁓ you know, I call all the birthday people up and I put together a hula hoop contest where I've got people hula hooping up and down the floor of the boat, and we go from hula hooping to You know, I have a ⁓ I got a a a floor time and we're doing the Whitney Houston challenge. And as this is building, I come up with a whole hour's worth of nonsense to do before the band comes to play. So one day I do the show and I didn't know that the owner of the boat was on the boat that day. And the owner of the boat is standing out front ⁓ talking, you know, as the as everyone's leaving, and people are steady coming by like the comedian was so entertaining. kate: You're so Yes! INVISIBLE: The comedian was so entertaining and the owner of the boat is where with the general manager, and they're talking to one of the floor managers, like, what comedian? We didn't have we didn't hire a comedian. So I walk out, you know, I'm walking out going to get my check on the way out. And there was an an older couple, and they were like, ⁓ my gosh, your your show was so funny. And I'm looking like the floor you were on. Global Music Collective: We didn't hire who? INVISIBLE: I didn't actually DJ. That was the Carl show. I'm goofing off. And they like, I was ⁓ you weren't, you came up to dance? And they were like, no, your comedy routine was amazing. And all the owner and the manager heard it. So they were like, Carl, we need you to do that. That's that's your new thing. That's happening. You're that's yeah. And this is last year. So they sprinkled it in here and there. And this year, I am the full-time cruise director on the Detroit Princess Riverboat. And I am having it's it's my dream job. kate: My God. Global Music Collective: That's happening now. kate: ⁓ my god! INVISIBLE: Like they made me ⁓ like financially, when they gave me the offer, I was like thinking it was a joke and I was like When you're trying not to act too happy. Like Yeah, I'm gonna have to talk to my wife. ⁓ 'cause I'm gonna be gone Thursday through Sunday now. So let me talk to her and make sure. ⁓ you guys gotta come through. You gotta yeah, cause this it is like is this is all this job that I have right now is better than like it's better than my Global Music Collective: Right. You gotta act cool, like this may suit my kate: ⁓ my god. Richie, we need to go on a vacation. Yeah. Global Music Collective: To Detroit. INVISIBLE: Touring jobs. Like those were those were awesome and they're on way. But this is this is for once this is the Carl show. Like my job description. I'm bar I'm going I'm bartending. I make myself the celebrity guest bartender. So I'll go behind the bars like if you want a good drink, you go to them. If you want a fun drink, and I've got a bottle of her. Yeah, it may not be good. It probably will be bad, but at least it'll be fun to drink. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yeah. kate: My God, which is the best show? Global Music Collective: For people stumbling around, falling off the boat. kate: He's like pouring it down through. Global Music Collective: That's cool 'cause I think as a DJ your job kind of is to be invisible to borrow a name. Like you you're there to kinda prop up the the MCs and the artists that are out front. So you don't maybe ever get the shine maybe that you've you could have. INVISIBLE: So yeah. kate: ⁓ my god. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Yeah. No, and that's one thing, like the history of the DJ has changed so much because back in the like seventies and the early eighties, the DJ was the guy, like he was that guy. And you you always hear the DJ names from back then. It was always like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, DJ Flash, you know, DJ Grandmaster Flash, and and then there was this furious fire. Some of the rapping guys. And then ⁓ you know, over the course of the years. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. And then everybody else, yeah. INVISIBLE: The rapper started to get more popular and people started to come to hear the rappers rap over the DJ music. And then the DJs kind of f started to fall back into the late nineties where it was like your your Puff Daddy and your, you know, your Doctor Trey, the producers became the big person and you lost the the DJ kind of lost that identity as being the the guy. So which is kind of where DJ Invisible is kinda funny too. kate: Some some might say you went the road of the flugelhorn. INVISIBLE: Totally flugal. I flugled out. I flugled. Yeah. Cause the you know, the ⁓ and then over the the the course of the years my road of entertainment has always been like a hired gun. You know, like if you need a DJ, that that's how I actually got introduced to ⁓ like the the American music abroad programs. ⁓ Mahogany Jones, her DJ couldn't travel for some reason. Global Music Collective: You forgot that. kate: Just saying. Then Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. Right. INVISIBLE: So somebody called somebody and threw me a alley oop and I had ⁓ you know, I had the passport and the ability to travel and enough of a resume to where she was like, ⁓ this could work. And it worked out. I got a chance to travel with Mahogany Jones and JC Caprize. And ⁓ there was just it was just an awesome experience. So my first AMA trip trip was ⁓ went to ⁓ Pakistan and Madagascar. Global Music Collective: Let's go. Yeah. INVISIBLE: And ⁓ like just never thought that I would ever go to Pakistan. The only thing I knew of Madagascar at the time was it had a great movie. Yeah. Yeah, great movie. And that is so sad that that was all I knew. But when I came back, it was like I I knew so much more about Madagascar. I had vanilla beans that I traveled with, you know, fresh vanilla beans and Global Music Collective: Of all places. Yeah. Lots of lemurs. Mm-hmm. kate: ⁓ yeah. INVISIBLE: I got a chance to see right. I got a chance to see lemurs in real life and they didn't sing to me or King Julian was like totally not there, but they're like real animals. So, you know, the the ⁓ the ability, I don't know. Yeah, I'm on yellow glasses. Anything could happen. Yeah, like the the ability to travel with ⁓ you know, the the American music abroad programs and the the different arts envoy programs. kate: You d where did that go? ⁓ Global Music Collective: That's right. INVISIBLE: ⁓ it was a totally different space than my other international travel. 'Cause you actually get the chance to see stuff, you know? So Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yeah. kate: So these these these programs that Carl's talking about, just for people who might not know listening, ⁓ ri this is how Richie and I met each other. This is act this was the the way that all three of us met each other. This is the way that we started getting to travel and see the world. A lot of people have asked me over time, what is cultural diplomacy? Because I I really like that term and so I use it a lot. And a lot of people haven't heard of cultural diplomacy. And ⁓ my best way to describe it is that And actually Richie, you talked about this I think last week or something, but about the Jazz Ambassadors program with Louis Armstrong and how ⁓ I don't know, was it back in the forties that the US government I think it was around World War Two Global Music Collective: This started I believe as fifty seven or six hang on. INVISIBLE: Yeah, it was in the fifties. Yeah. It was in the fifties 'cause ⁓ it was like it was around there, it was a some serious racial issues that were just starting to be international internationally publicized issues and people were ⁓ like as these musicians are traveling, people are asking them how they're representing their country and they're being, you know, oppressed back at home. So kate: Fifty Okay. Okay. So anyway Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: That was a a a tough time for those people, you know, for those those musicians to travel. kate: Right. Right, right. It's interesting. The program has over time become I mean, it's taken so many different forms. And yeah, it's kind it's it's paused at this point, but ⁓ the I think my impression of the idea behind it was to send artists out into the world to represent America, ⁓ and all of the artists of course who did it, w I think we were more excited just to be artists and to connect with other people and that in itself became a form of diplomacy because A lot of these stereotypes about Americans, ⁓ they're not all, you know, a lot of them come from real issues like what what Carl's talking about back at home. ⁓ but I think that the the act of people in other countries getting to actually just meet artists w and we have a different way of communicating with people, we've a different way of connecting with people. ⁓ I think there's a really interesting history that we can talk about in another podcast that's all about ⁓ how artists have actually influenced ⁓ major geopolitical events, ⁓ whether consciously or unconsciously, culture is a very powerful force. So anyway, ⁓ I just wanted to say really quickly, when we're talking about AMA and when we're talking about Arts Envoy and all these programs, ⁓ the US government for many, many, many, many, many years ⁓ gave millions of dollars towards these programs that would send artists of different genres, different backgrounds all abroad to get to connect with other artists around the world and represent America culturally. So I just that's how we all met ⁓ that's how these that's how Global Music Collective even was ⁓ inspired and formed. So that's my boring ⁓ insert. But I feel like people should know. The people should know. Otherwise it's just inside, you know, internal stuff. Global Music Collective: They should know and it should come back. I like it. INVISIBLE: Right. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. As I am sitting here looking like the American flag. kate: I mean it is almost the fourth of July. So it's almost and I'm wearing red. Richie's Richie's man of the world. You're so into volley, Carl, I love it. INVISIBLE: I don't know. Well that and Bali is sitting there representing the ⁓ what's up, Bali? Bali is repres I mean I so as a Detraitor, when the Pistons lost during the playoffs, I was heartbroken and I was I walked around the house just lost, just staring out the window, just Global Music Collective: Off into the INVISIBLE: Right, just what will I do? And it was sad. So I'm trying to find, you know, something else to get into and then the ⁓ the New York Knicks, San Antonio basketball series. ⁓ you stop it. You guys didn't kate: Yes. I was very excited. I lived in New York for fifteen years. I I wanted the Knicks to win. Sorry. I know, I know, I know. INVISIBLE: I know unmute. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: So after and the thing is I th I like basketball. So I wanted that series to go a little bit longer. And it ended way too quick. And then I was like, I I'm not the biggest baseball fan. So when the World Cup stuff started, like last time the World Cup was going, I was lucky enough to watch the World Cup because of my international traveling. I watched the World Cup in three different countries. So kate: Yeah. Yeah, I agree with that. INVISIBLE: Farbion, who's another member of our really cool club, Farbion and I were in Liberia, and we watched a World Cup match between France and somebody, and we were in a hotel that shut off its power. Like the hotel power was shut off at eight o'clock because that they had power, it was solar or something, and there was no generators or batteries. So the hotel power went out. kate: Wow. Yeah Farbio. Global Music Collective: Okay. kate: Right. INVISIBLE: So they brought in, they brought in some kind of situation of generators to get power to a television in the lobby so the guests could watch the World Cup. And we sat there and cheered for France because during the last World Cup, most of the French players were of African descent. So by France making it so far, it was like the continent of Africa was making it in the World Cup. kate: Yeah Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: Which was so wild. So we're all cheering for France. So I watched that game. France won. It was great. Mbappe was like really cool. I had no idea who any of these people were, right? So now I'm nut. I had the official ball sitting there, there's flags and banners. Like I'm I have every jersey. I some I I have to shoot. So needless to say, I went somewhere else and was some other country, was able to watch another game and then came home and watched the finals with kate: That's awesome. Ha ha ha. Global Music Collective: But now you're a fan, big fan, long time fan. Yeah. INVISIBLE: at home with ⁓ Argentina beating France. But you know, the this is is it's fun. Like being that, you know, the world is in its interesting situation right now. There's all this other political stuff going on. It feels really good watching the World Cup stuff because it is like the only thing happening right now that is like is all positive. It's watching the people at the games and you see people from all over the world kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: And like they're the fans are high fiving each other. And soccer to me is crazy because what either team that you're on, you have a respect for the something that the other players may do. Like ⁓ Cristiano Rinaldi scored a goal and players from the other team and fans from each team are high fiving each other because it's really cool. So I think that sports, let me bring it back to music. Sports like music is an awesome unifier. Like kate: Right, right. Global Music Collective: Totally. INVISIBLE: You know, it feels good to be able to wear my, you know, wear my flag stuff and and and represent and be proud of where I'm from, you know, which was another great feeling that we always had getting a chance to travel abroad. Like I you know, proud to be American. Like this is this is really cool that I'm able to do this and show off what I got. So kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Absolutely. kate: We were talking about this yesterday, the whole proud to be or not yesterday, ⁓ for our last d last podcast. ⁓ we were talking about this proud to be American thing. I was saying ⁓ I've been really impressed since I just moved back from India about a little less than a year ago. And ⁓ thank you. And it's funny, I've been a little bit like I was living abroad, I was really enjoying the you know, the jet setting worldly life and all this and INVISIBLE: Welcome home. kate: Now I'm back in Austin, Texas. And when I first came back, all of these people were saying to me, like, ⁓ why are you why did you come back? And I kept being like, Honestly, like, I I really like the US. I'm happy to be back. I I I I don't know, like, I love all the other countries I've been to, and it's not I see, I see the problems. And I think that the the interesting thing here to me is that the US, of course, we have plenty of plenty of problems. ⁓ historical problems, like current problems, plenty of problems, social problems, economic problems, you know, w whatever. It doesn't even have to be political. But ⁓ I don't know, that doesn't mean that there aren't also great things. And there's so much that I love about the US that I feel like I wish more people inside and outside of the US saw more of what actually makes the US special because I think a lot of what people see is just, you know, the Kardashians and Taco Bell or whatever. And, you know. INVISIBLE: Right. kate: I've had a a great Dorito Taco at Taco Bell. I'm not gonna pretend that I it's only fancy stuff, but I don't know. I I've been really I was Richie and I were just talking about how fun it's been seeing even these videos on Instagram of European tourists who so often just like to talk smack about the yokel Americans and all of a sudden they're here and they're like they can't get enough ranch dressing and you know, it's like, yeah, we're not that bad, you know? There's a lot of great things about yeah. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Right. Yeah. Not at all. No. And that's the that's one thing that I I I I really enjoy is when people I I enjoy defending the United States. And as a person of color, it is always looked at sideways. It's like, you know, I'm like, yes, the history of the country. Roller coaster ride, right? Hundred percent roller coaster ride. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: But this is still where I was born. Like I this is not ⁓ this is where I'm from. Like half my family is Native American, the other half is of African descent. So the Native American side of the family, this is you know, years and years, like since the dawn of time, you know, the the funny thing is ⁓ the last name is Adams since the dawn of time. The Addams family has been Global Music Collective: Ha ha kate: Right. Yeah. Ha ha ha Global Music Collective: Det er en fandme. INVISIBLE: You know, and you know, I have a Native American name. I you know, but and ⁓ no one calls me that, you know, it's just but I I have a tri Chutsi. Yeah, so but the cool thing is is like that's me. That's where I I'm from here. Like I love traveling. It is really cool to go see the Eiffel Tower. It is really cool to travel, like we were on the Nile River, like as kate: What is it? Yeah ⁓ my god. INVISIBLE: As kids that grew up in the United States, we were given books to read and there was history and we actually had geography that we had to learn. And during those times, we were learning about the Nile River. We were learning about the Eiffel Tower and all these amazing waterfalls and really cool things in the in the equator. Like you how many there was a globe in every classroom, right? Global Music Collective: That's right. kate: Wait, wait, wait, I'm so sorry. I just have to say, the equator, we all went to the equator. The three of us went to the equator together. And I remember being like, I don't want to go to the equator. Who cares? Like, I it's it was our one day off. I just wanted to relax. And Carl, our dear friend Chutsi over here, said to me, He said, Don't ever take your time for granted. Just because you feel like you're gonna come back here. Yeah, you did. You were like, just because you feel like he Carl said to me, just because you feel like you're gonna come back to Uganda. INVISIBLE: Right. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: Wait, I said. Global Music Collective: Wow. Wisdom. kate: And you'll have another chance to see the equator. This is the only time in our lives that we're gonna be able to go at this moment, right now, with each other in this way. Just come. And I did, and we had an amazing day. Anyway, back to you back to what you were saying. But you said equator and I I lost my shit. INVISIBLE: I knew I wasn't I right. I every now every what's that so every f ten years I'll say something really profound and that's why I have I haven't said anything smart since I was at the equator. That's why I'm the cruise director. There it is. No, but and that's that's that's that's real. Like a lot of people that I've traveled with, they will go to a hotel, do a show, go back to the hotel, take a nap, and then keep it moving to the next city. And I've had to do that too. I my travel schedule kate: It was a profound Yeah. Global Music Collective: Once every ten years. kate: That's why you're cruise director, Carl. Global Music Collective: Ha ha INVISIBLE: All of them. Our travel schedules have not always allowed us to see the things that we've learned about in books. And like the opportunities to see the the equator. Like I've never been back. You know, I've never been back to the equator. But I can say that I went. And there are only a handful of people that I know on the planet Earth that can say they've been to the equator. You know, so these these opportunities that that music has gifted us are kate: Yeah. Me neither. Yeah. INVISIBLE: A blessing. Like, you know, like the dang now you I'm really thinking, Richie, like I really don't think I've said anything that's smart. Dang. Global Music Collective: Every si it's alright, it's every few years. kate: It was a great line. I'll never forget it. You really like I was really, really, really affected by that. And I think about it every time I I have an opportunity to do just about anything if ⁓ if I'm sitting around at home feeling like I'd rather just watch Netflix or whatever, ⁓ I almost always have this little mini carl in my head being like, you never you never and here we are, like we thought that that this work that we were doing was gonna be something that we would be building our entire life. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Thank you. kate: you know, lives off of, ⁓ to a certain degree or building into our entire lives and and now it's changed drastically just in a matter of ⁓ minutes. So you it you were right, you never know. Anyway, we should jump into our playlist, don't you think, Richie? I INVISIBLE: Yeah. No, it is it is that is really cool. Global Music Collective: We should. I'm still thinking about like the ten dollars we had to pay to watch the guy spin a flower on both sides of the equator. Do you remember that? INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. kate: Richie, your your video is all blurry. Is it blurry for too, Carl? INVISIBLE: Yeah, you're all discombobulated. You look like Max Headroom. Global Music Collective: I've been tr ⁓ something's funny with it right now. Let me ⁓ INVISIBLE: That's another thing, Kate, that I've been doing. So I'm on stage running through my jokes, and to try and switch it up every now and then, I just start throwing like random dad jokes out there. And ⁓ I well, ⁓ there none of them are good. So the like we we had a hundred thousand followers. Now we've got ten. ⁓ that would we had Carl on. Everyone left. kate: ⁓ yes, I want a dad joke, please. Okay. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. kate: No. It's the opposite. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: No, but a lot of my jokes and references are coming from the 80s. And I have to say, yeah, I have to disclaimer so many jokes. Like, if you are under 40 years old, you're not gonna get this. You know, because the max headroom joke is like the 50 and up crowd. Like, and I'll say something like that, and ⁓ all the old people are everybody else is like, What are you talking about? What is happening? What is no one understands? But no, when you so when given the ⁓ Global Music Collective: You're not gonna get it. kate: Ha ha. Global Music Collective: Mm. What do you even say? Yeah. Get this old guy outta here. Anyway. kate: Ha ha ha INVISIBLE: Given the assignment of putting together my top ten list, I started thinking about it and I was like, ⁓ and you told me, you know, top ten from your from your cultural traveling. ⁓ because yes, I had been in the right place at the right time and been a part of some really, really cool music videos and other opportunities. ⁓ and I had that list and kate: Yes. Woo. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: That list is kind of fun, but it's the algorithm can figure that out. So I was in a Little John video during the height of Crump Time. And yeah. Yeah. I was in yeah, I was in a little john video with Exhibit and ⁓ Crazy Bone from Bone Thugs and Harmony. And it was just me sitting sitting in the club with a bottle. I was in the video and that was my job. Sit there next to Exhibit on the booth, hold a bottle. I'm only in the video for a hot second. Let's see, I was ⁓ I was in Global Music Collective: Okay. ⁓ What? ⁓ Yeah, hang on. kate: Wow. INVISIBLE: A couple of exhibits videos. and one of the videos, I was so frustrated that it was a million dollar video. They had a whole scene set up for me. The guy who shot the video was more interested in getting his friends in the video than putting me in the video. So I am in the very I'm in the very last scene. Then I got into a back and short joke back and forth joke fight with a guy who was hired to be a weightlifter on the lawn. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: So we were all supposed to be like, you know, these we're in Beverly Hills at this mansion and we're on the front lawn lifting weights. And I had a tank top on. I was I was in tour shape for that time. We were ⁓ we were consuming a lot of Hennessy at the time. So I had I had a shape that was not in. I had it was not in. Yeah, I was, yeah. I had a killer dad by it. So I had, you know, my arms are Global Music Collective: Yeah. That's real. Uh-huh. Yeah. It was around. It was around. Yeah. kate: ⁓ man. That's a dad joke. INVISIBLE: Yeah, my arms are okay. So I'm, you know, sitting on this weight bench and I'm doing curls and this dude is super like steroid jack, looking like a wrestler. And he's like, I don't know why they had you in the video. I said, Well, I'm actually in exhibits group. I'm his DJ and he said, Yeah, I could have got guys that were way stronger than you And I said, Well, they needed a meathead in the video. That's why they got you So he got really mad at me and I was like, Hey, I'm actually in the group so you can't like we can't fight 'cause, you know, you'll lose. So Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: I'm I'm in that video for a hot second on the lawn. And then I'm in another exhibit video where we're like breaking into someplace. So these are like really million dollar cool videos that I was in. And but the meaningful ones are the ones like I was talking about earlier that I actually had something to do with. And I started running through like some of the cool projects that I've been a part of. And I came up with a really cool list. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Okay. Well we were trying to figure out do you we could kate: Yeah. ⁓ we got a drum roll. INVISIBLE: ⁓ wait, is it too early to reveal the list? Global Music Collective: No, no, no. We I think let's do it. We could ⁓ I thought we could we could ease you in and do our list first, but if you are ready, let's do it. Let's jump in. ⁓ Okay. I we got a drum roll on everything, so let me check this. INVISIBLE: Okay, yeah. Now now we need another drum roll. ⁓ go ahead, Richie. ⁓ no, no. No, I wanna I wanna see your list first. kate: Quick question, since this we're just gonna take a second, this is not gonna go into the podcast. But ⁓ Carl, just so you know, ⁓ I my list is just random shit. It was whatever I was listening to. Just put that out there. So I like how you were like very so if there are songs from like any of your other stuff too that you wanna throw in, please feel free to. Just don't don't feel yeah. Okay. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: Yeah. No, no, I'm I'm no, I'm gonna be I'm gonna stick with this one. I will reference a couple honorable mentions then. Cause yeah, because the stuff that I'm listening to is gonna I'd lose all credibility as a real hip about DJ about. ⁓ it is so I was in the car. I was in the car the other day with the kids and we had about a forty minute drive and we're stuck in traffic. kate: Okay, good, good, good. Richie, what is Global Music Collective: ⁓ It's just all all Dido. INVISIBLE: And I'm running through I have a Spotify playlist that started out as my travel playlist. And it was like cool, like chill songs that I would put on on airplanes to kind of like relax and fall asleep to. And that one playlist has turned into cool, chill playlists. And it's like Sharday, Anita Baker. And then it's like the cranberries, zombie, zombie. And then it starts to transition. And then it's like, ⁓ little Sean Paul, a little beanie man. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. kate: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: And then it's like drum and bass and living on a prayer has made it in. It's like so I'm on the plane and I'm like chilling asleep and it's like ⁓ kate: ⁓ shoot. INVISIBLE: Well it's so ⁓ but it's so sporadic right now. So yes, but go ahead, Richie, sorry. kate: Well, Richie, your your video's all all wonky, so why do do you want to try the screen share and see if that helps maybe the situation and we can jump straight to your list? Global Music Collective: Yeah, I've been trying to I've been trying to fix it a little bit. Hopefully it's a little bit better by now, but if it's not, then too bad. I think it's still it's still gonna it's gonna record my video anyway from my phone. So if as long as you can see me, I think it's alright. INVISIBLE: Bad. kate: Yeah. ⁓ okay. Okay, great, great. Global Music Collective: But all right, so here we go. kate: So let's start with Richie. Global Music Collective: We're gonna start with Richard. You we used to start with Kate. I know there's a sound effect coming. I saw you reaching forward. I don't know if it was the air horn coming. kate: I'm tired of myself. I'm tired of my own voice. INVISIBLE: You were kate: Ha ha Global Music Collective: Yeah. I was like, I saw this motion. I was like, there's that okay, so just ⁓ when you're performing with people, I think that's like the coolest thing about being on stage with somebody is that you can kinda sense them a little bit. You don't have to communicate. In fact, you're performing with the microphone saying something completely different, but I can know like, ⁓ Carl's about to do something, he's about to come break dance, let me do something, or this guy's about to do INVISIBLE: That's when you know you know your friends, like you that's Right, that's it. He's gonna hit an air horn, like yeah. kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: Let me call it let me call a ER. Let me call let me call the ambulance. Yeah. ⁓ my goodness. Global Music Collective: Let me call the f yeah. Yeah, what's the nine one one number and Kampala? 'Cause ⁓ but I always like that. I always love that about performance that you actually get to like you get the waves from somebody. Anyway, all right. I'm gonna share my list. I'm gonna talk about it real quick and then yeah. If you know our podcast, you know that this is pretty normal. Let me pull this up. How do I screen share? kate: Ha ha ha. Bit of a delayed DI reaction. INVISIBLE: Right. ⁓ Global Music Collective: Sorry, we edit all of this. ⁓ INVISIBLE: And it was on this day Richard started trying to find his playlist. He had ten songs that he was supposed to have ready after it took Carl thirty minutes just to get his computer turned on. The entire podcast was delayed and waiting with bated breath for this playlist to happen. kate: God. That's perfect, Richie. Algen playing by soon. Global Music Collective: Is that timing alright? Yeah. Algenbling. Alright. Here is my playlist. So I got 10 songs. Yeah. Van Halen, clearly not like ⁓ yeah, they are certainly on the more famous side of this list, but I tried to ⁓ mathematics, it's I mean that kind of kate: Van Halen. All right. Van Halen and Most Def. Global Music Collective: That genre, not genre, that sort of time frame of hip hop is getting a little older now. And so I I think there's some people that don't that don't know that stuff. And we were talking about producers and DJs, and I think DJ Premier, who was the one that made the beat for this, ⁓ is worth referencing. So that's in there. Yeah, Van Halen, obviously known for like their influence on rock and roll. And this song, I tried to pick one that's a little different. ⁓ where should we dive in? kate: I just I'm sorry, Richie, I need to immediately just know c I wanna know Carl's reaction. First thing first thing, what Carl, what songs on here do you know and what do you not know? And what are you like pumped about? INVISIBLE: Well I think I need a magnifying glass right now. kate: Ha ha Global Music Collective: Does that help? Is that or you gotta He he can put Okay. I think you can expand this on your thing somehow. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah. I can see if I can So I like the ⁓ the MA3 outro? Which is funny. I gleamed into my phone and on my spot ⁓ Midnight City is one of my favorite songs. That always Yeah. No, I love Mosdev. He's such he's he's his personality, just er I love his acting skills. He's one of those people that's like a a utility knife of entertainment. And that that is super dope. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Did I hear you were just playing some ⁓ eighty three. I kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yes. Same album and everything. Mm-hmm. Yep. kate: ⁓ what's this Rustavi choir Georgian voices? You went a little you went you went there. I'm excited. What's this? Global Music Collective: Yeah, I went I w I went most deaf to the Rustavi Georgian choir. kate: Haha That's a playlist I'd listen to. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. ⁓ all right, so let's start there. We got to do this, it an American music abroad tour that we did with our a cappella group. We were a pop a cappella group, and I was the beatboxer, and so all of our stuff was like covers of pop songs, and we went to Georgia, which is also a country. It's a state in the US, but it is a country. And it was a dad joke. Definitely a dad joke, and we kate: That was a dad joke. INVISIBLE: A geographical dad joke. That's next level. Global Music Collective: That's yeah, that's like yeah, I gotta tone it down a bit. ⁓ so we actually did this version of Georgia on my mind, like this beautiful a cappella version. We would do it off mic, we would put the microphones down and sing it. It was usually like this beautiful moment in our in our song or in our set. And we thought this is gonna be hilarious. We're gonna say, Georgia, this song, you guys will know this this one's called Georgia, you're gonna love this. And so we rolled out there thinking this is gonna be a hilarious joke and we said Here it is for you, Georgia thinking they're gonna scream and yell and they were like, All right, sing this song Crickets like not that we sang it, they liked it, but the joke didn't land we would learn later that in Georgia the name of the country is is Suckart Velo. So So it Suckart Velo on my mind doesn't really kate: We've heard this before. INVISIBLE: Right. kate: ⁓ INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Roll off the tongue as well. Unfortunately. Yeah. So we thought we were real clever with that one. ⁓ but Georgia has this incredible, like, full voice sc ⁓ yeah. So as an a cappella group, the number one thing anytime we do a workshop with people is usually just to get people to sing louder. It's so frustrating to hear people sing like Georgia, Georgia, don't it's so quiet and you're like, there's no power, there's no oomph, you can't express anything. And then when we went to Georgia, it was like decibels louder than the five of us. These this particular song, it's like a three person harmony. And once you get like 30 seconds into this huge drop of ⁓ it's this amazing like three person harmony and it's really cool. And then when you're in person and you hear these people just singing at the top of their lungs, full power, it's a really cool experience. So the most deaf into Rustavi choir of Sakarvello is my jam. ⁓ kate: That's awesome. I'm into it. I'm into it. INVISIBLE: Now you're gonna have me thinking anytime I go to another country, like we say it one way and it's actually pronounced something totally different. And you're gonna be as it's the equivalent of good night, Cleveland. And they're like, we don't know what is happening here. What is he talking about? Right, first off. kate: Totally different. Global Music Collective: Like this is Miami, first of all. ⁓ Yeah, no, actually we the US, speaking of the World Cup, the w US plays Turkey on Thursday, I believe. And I think they just officially changed their name to like Turkey. You're supposed to say Turkey. I think ⁓ there's an umla in there. Anyway, there's some more geography nerddom for all of our geography fan out there. INVISIBLE: Okay. Yeah. No, I totally expect Kate to come back dressed like she's from Turkey now. Like she's right up ⁓ we were talking about Turkey and she just comes back like either dressed like a turkey Global Music Collective: Turkey. Yeah. That was my grandpa had some bad jokes about Hungary and Turkey Turkey, usually around Thanksgiving. And I was like, This really INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. That's good timing. Yeah, that's quality grandad jokes. Global Music Collective: Yeah, it's like you've left that joke level and you've INVISIBLE: Next level. Like they're funny just because we have to laugh at the shoe because you're the granddad. No, she did she did not come back dressed like a turkey. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha, finding grand What do you got? kate: Heard you guys well, I had to fix my air conditioner, and I I heard you guys talking about a turkey and was like looking around in my living room, like what do I have that could look like a turkey? I didn't have anything. I'm sorry. I just had to fix my air conditioner. Turns out putting these little ring lights are really hot, and so I needed to turn, yeah. Anyway. INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. They did yeah. Now if you'd gone to the ⁓ my goodness. Had you brought back an actual turkey out of the refrigerator, that would have also been acceptable. Salmonilla. Global Music Collective: Well w welcome back. kate: I don't have a turkey, Carl. I don't know what to tell you. It's the middle of the summer. Speaking of turkey. Global Music Collective: Yeah. It's really slippery. INVISIBLE: All right. Global Music Collective: Alright. Well, I I have no turkey segue, so I'm just gonna move on. INVISIBLE: ⁓ okay, sorry. kate: Why why do you have Hokuna Mak Matata in there? What what's this about? There's gotta be a story. Global Music Collective: Okay, so Hakunuma this is not a Lion King reference, although Carl ha has an amazing Lion King reference in his show that like always crushes, and I don't want to give it away because it's like one of the best reveals in all of DJ Dim. And there's a shoe, a bottle of water, and a anyway. INVISIBLE: ⁓ mask. ⁓ that's good stuff. No, I do 'cause I've done it kate: Carl's like, I forget, dude. INVISIBLE: Last time I did it it didn't hit. I'll have to tell you about that. Yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: ⁓ no. Okay. Well, they don't know what they're missing. You must have been in Sakart Velo. They just didn't quite get it. Anyway, Hakun Matada. So this was this in my searches for this group, I actually couldn't find them at all. This is as close as I found. There's a sample of this group on here, and Carl was talking about Madagascar. This actually is referencing a group from Madagascar. We got to go there and do an arts envoy tour. It was me and two other guys called Fred. INVISIBLE: Mate then. kate: Ha ha ha. Who's we? ⁓ the a cappella. Aha. Global Music Collective: Freedom's Boombox. Yep. It was me, Alfredo Austin, and Chris Diaz. We are the loudest three people you ever met. And they basically there are a group of eight boys who they're either unhoused or close to it. They they're in Madagascar, there's just like not a lot of money. And the way that them and their families made money is these eight boys would just go out on the street all day and sing top of their lungs. And it's amazed. It's really cool and incredible. And so the embassy while we were there put together this program where we get to record them. We put them on stage with us and they crushed it. Like they they outshined us. It was their show after we went on stage and it was really cool. So I was trying to find them. They are ⁓ it's called Zazakanto or the Boys of Tana. I I couldn't find them online, but this guy, Bruno Watts, I don't know how we got a sample of them, but he put it into this song, Hakunamatata. And I this is as close as I could get. So I'm yeah, I can't find them anywhere. That's maybe part of the part of the challenge of doing songs that are off the algorithm is some of them are literally off of the it. Yeah, exactly. ⁓ so when you listen to that song, if which by the way, if you're listening for the first time, go to our Substack or kate: Okay, awesome. Yeah. Right. Right. INVISIBLE: Everything. Right. Global Music Collective: Patreon, we actually will post the playlist of the of what we put up today on Apple and Spotify so that you can listen on your selected source and check it out. So after you listen to us talk about it, you can go play the songs, which I think is kind of a cool way to do this. kate: And you know, I just I have to say I don't know if we're I haven't gotten around to it yet because we've got a lot that we're doing right now. But ⁓ it might be worth seeing if someone like this group has their music up on Bandcamp or somewhere else that even if it can't go on the playlist, at least we can share the link so people can find it that way. I don't know. Global Music Collective: That's a good point. They are on Bandcamp. We actually have some YouTube videos of of the show that we did with them and it actually made it onto CBS. They covered our like tour with them and so there's some stuff we can share, but it's it's not on the playlist proper. But happily we kate: ⁓ cool. Right. Right. All right. Well we'll we'll throw that on our sub stack when we have time. Global Music Collective: Chug it on our Substack. Yeah. Hit subscribe. ⁓ I'm gonna jump up to Tigee, which is like it's by this guy group named Sands, which we got to listen to on the at the Bushfire Tour. This was another experience with a like an embassy official, and we went over to the the deputy I forget what her title was, Joya. Joya was amazing. Joya Starks does like a lot of the public diplomacy work. And she had us over with all these other like local influential people to talk about music when we went out there for a tour in Eswatini. And she put this song on and immediately it was like everybody got down, was like bum bum bum bum bum bum bum. It was like there are there are a few songs in the world where as soon as you hit it, it's people just start wiggling and start moving. kate: That's awesome. What is what does Eswatini look like? Like what what did the environment look like when you were there? Global Music Collective: It's well, it's it's it's right around ⁓ South Africa, so it's it's kind of got the I don't know. I don't know how to say geography stuff. We did all this geography things earlier, but low plain, prairie plains, savanna plain. I don't know what the words are. It's ⁓ it's pretty. It's beautiful. It's I think when you think of Africa you just assume it's like a million degrees, but it's a it's a temperate, lovely climate. We were there when it was warm. There's there's lovely grasses in the hills and ⁓ kate: Carl was just talking about geography. Global Music Collective: Yeah, I really liked Eswatini. It used to be called Swaziland and then they renamed it Eswatini for some reason. I don't know. I'm sure there's some deep cultural reason in there, but ⁓ but yeah, it was a cool place to visit. And they do this amazing festival called Bushfire, where they bring in all these bands. Most of them f are from the sort of the southern half of Africa and and around. They brought in an American a cappella group for whatever reason. But ⁓ kate: I was just thinking that Global Music Collective: It was so cool. It was kinda like Burning Man. There's just like three or four days of people come out and camp and ⁓ they have a couple of huge stages and and you just get to rock out and do some music. We did some other collabs while we're there, but anyway. Yeah. kate: Wow. That's cool. INVISIBLE: I love that is one thing that I really love about some of the cultural like exchange touring that we've been gotten a chance to do. Hearing about festivals like that, like are awesome. Like a festival nobody nobody else that you know of is gonna have that opportunity. You know, where were you at? I was in Eswatini that used to be Swaziland and now it is this beautiful place where they have a festival. It's a and it's probably Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: That's probably a festival that has been going on and is still happening and and you got a chance to rock it. So Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Y'all, we should start a tour company, you know what I mean? Like our weird weird places we've discovered in our music travels. I would I would pay for that. INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. Yeah, I was trying to tell somebody I people would like I was trying to explain, like somebody was running through my social media and was like, ⁓ my god, you had a flat tire on the Pamir High or Panier Highway. And I like, Yeah, and then I went on to into the story, and you start telling these stories, and the the memories come back and the like the details are crazy. Like I played the Roof of the World Festival, and the Roof of the World Festival was in Tajikistan and Global Music Collective: Right. kate: Yes. INVISIBLE: Yeah, and you fly in and it's a or former Russian situation and everything looks a little, you know, like stereotypical. Ever all the buildings look alike and then now that it's ⁓ Tajikistan proper and they they're starting to build and things are getting nicer and fancier and you know, the different lighting is going up and you stay in this really cool place and then they drive you two days up into the mountains and you're driving right next to Afghanistan and you're looking over the Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: the river and it's like, ⁓ yeah, what's that right there? And they're like, ⁓ yeah, that's the Taliban and you're like Global Music Collective: I've heard of them. Okay. ⁓ INVISIBLE: Right. Cool. And you know, you're driving and then you you get to a certain point or like we're gonna camp out overnight at this really nice hotel that the power goes out at four AM, but that's okay. we're gonna leave at four thirty and ⁓ head up because we have to get there before the checkpoints close and the Chinese are gonna be bombing some of the roads to build highways and expand the roads so that we gotta get through before the explosions go off. And you're like, ⁓ okay, that sounds all normal. And then you start driving up the mountain a little bit farther. kate: That's the television. ⁓ That's pretty Global Music Collective: Normal. INVISIBLE: And as you drive up the mountain a little bit further, that river that looked like it was a mile has turned into, ⁓ a hundred yards away, there's a gun turret sitting there. And on the other side is one facing back. And there's a Taliban camp that you see the guys sitting outside playing soccer. And as you get your cruising by, they're waving at you and you can see their faces. And like, is this safe? And they're like, Yeah, there hasn't been an incident in like less than a year. kate: ⁓ I remember that line, there hasn't been an incident. Not because I was in Tajikistan, but at another yeah. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Right. But right. And people people will say things like that. ⁓ it's been less than a year, which could have been yesterday. It's less than a year. And they're like, nah nah. Yeah, you're gonna be fine. And then I get up to the the roof of the world festival and I am the one of two Americans in the entire place. The f the other act that was supposed to close the night out canceled. So they decided since I'm the American Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. ⁓ go ahead. INVISIBLE: I'm the headliner of the entire festival now. Cause I'm the right resume rise. I tracked as the hide the most accolades. And I'm like, I'm a DJ. And these are all like this guy's a rock star in Russia. This guy's a the most famous entertainer ever to come out of Tajikistan. And he's going on before me. And it was like, I have this thing that I do where like kate: Huh. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: The band that plays on the Prince. I I've taken a whole tangent. I'm sorry. But the band that the Motown band that plays on the Princess boat are five guys and they've all had Motown experience. You know, they've been parts of other ⁓ touring groups and they all dress like a Motown group. They put on matching outfits and they go up there and these guys are all in their sixties and seventies and they put on a performance that is amazing. And then I have to come on after them or I have to go on before them. Global Music Collective: No, perfect. kate: That's the point. Global Music Collective: Nice. INVISIBLE: So we used to hear the stories all the time of how the temptations and the four tops would really when you go on stage first, it's your job to burn out the crowd and you give everything that you have. So whoever comes on after you has to work twice as hard. And if you come on after, you want to do everything possible to make people forget whatever happened before you. So I'm approaching my DJ show like that on the princess boat. I'm giving all my dad jokes. I'm selling it. I'm running around trying to be as entertaining as possible, knowing. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: I got these five rock stars coming on behind me. So when I hear of I'm in Tajikistan and I have the most famous entertainer ever to come out of Tajikistan, and he's singing songs in their language, they all know him. You know, a couple thousand people out there, and they're all singing along. It looked like a baby Woodstock. There's a stage. As far as you can see, all up into the hill. There's people singing this guy's songs. And I'm like, Global Music Collective: ⁓ INVISIBLE: ⁓ well, Carl, this is where you train wreck and crash out in Tajikistan. You have to follow this. I'm like, ⁓ my goodness. So you know, that festival to me has put my career in a whole different light. Like I went on and I I walked off stage having absolutely no energy left. I am pulling Miss Tajikistan on stage, trying to get everything possible I cut you get out of my performance. All of it. I'm singing Earth, Wind and Fire. I'm hands in the air. kate: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: This is it. All the stops. kate: Ha ha. INVISIBLE: People are jumping around. I'm bringing kids on stage, holding them up to the pride lands. I'm everything possible. I'm like, I could do this, keep going. And then ⁓ I get I played for an hour. I come off stage and the lady was like, That was amazing. You only really had to play 15 minutes. What? And they were happy that I played. They were really happy I played a hour, but several people I talked to are like, we only had you. Global Music Collective: Like we were trying to pull you off. kate: Ha ha ha INVISIBLE: 'Cause when we threw you there, we didn't think that you could go that long. I we you only had to play fifteen minutes. And I was like, 'cause I had an hour, I was like, I I got nothing. I'm I I this is the this is my conclusion right here. I this is what I got. But ⁓ yeah, those festivals are like the amount of energy that you have in these smaller festivals, the smaller cultural festivals, like this is the people's entertainment. They didn't have to pay to get in, they chose to go. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: I got I'm out. I'm sweating. INVISIBLE: not knowing necessarily what they were going to see. Like they went to see this guy 'cause they knew he was gonna be there. And then DJ Invisible being there, they're like, I don't know, let's see what this guy's about and and it just worked out. So yeah, those kate: We've been talking about this a lot, Carl, though, is that this kind of first of all, there's so much all over the world, right? Obviously, there's so many festivals and celebr we were just talking last week about some celebrities from other countries that, you know, outside of their country are largely unknown. But it's also I just it's so humbling, I think. Like we live in our world where we think, you know, this person's a celebrity and or or you know, I was I was talking with a friend of mine recently who's like played stadiums with this really, really famous rock band, and he was talking about INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: ⁓ just coming back from tour and being like, ⁓ don't let it get to your head, blah, blah, blah, blah. And anyway, we were we were just talking about how like it's so funny 'cause you take someone out of their world in which they are the celebrity and you put them in a world where and it's just it's I think it's just endlessly fascinating to me to think about I I don't know how I just got distracted because I saw a text on my computer. I should set my notifications off. Anywho, anyway, I totally lost my train of thought. I'm gonna INVISIBLE: ⁓ no, I I you're you I get it. There are like certain places where and then there and it's so it's funny because there's like a a positive and a negative to it. Sometimes we'll go into these other countries and you'll find like the most popular person in this ⁓ particular country or in this city, and they're a rock star. Now we met some of them, I don't want to throw anybody under a bus or whatever, but we met some celebrities that were big in their city, in this foreign country, and then they were a little ⁓ kind of thrown off that we didn't know who they were. And to me, it that was another thing that really made me think, like, Carl, don't do, don't do that. Like, like I am really popular in very small niche hip hop groups where people will actually know what DJ Invisible has done, which is just I scratch records behind rappers. So I I know that, you know, I am a I am a solid Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Mm-hmm. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: E-list celebrity. So I can't even say celeb blah blah blah. An E-list celebrity. Like there are D list celebrities are like, ⁓ okay, I know who that is. Me, I'm like, I have to explain it. I'm an I'm I am an explained celebrity. Global Music Collective: Celebrity. Yeah. I have to tell you. kate: But that's okay, but but now everything came back to me. Now now that you're saying this, I remember what I wanted to say. Sorry, Carl, I'm just gonna interrupt you, but you you brought it back to me. No, I was just gonna say it's fascinating to me this idea of celebrity, because in the end, the things that impact us the most and that that are the most memorable in our lives, they're so rarely INVISIBLE: Hmm ⁓ Global Music Collective: Mm. kate: the big name big ticket things, you know? I mean, sometimes it is, but even even when it is the big name, big ticket thing, it's usually because we've had some incredibly personal, intimate experience that connects it to that. But like I just think it's so interesting. I would I would pay so much more money to go see the Top of the World Festival and hear who this singer is, whoever it is, who all these people came to see, than I would pay to g I like I love, I don't know, ⁓ Beyon ⁓ Beyonce, I would definitely pay a lot of money to see Beyonce. But INVISIBLE: Yeah, that's a good show. kate: You know what I mean? Like, I'm trying to think of another really, really famous pop idol. If I had a choice, okay, fine. Even between Beyonce. If I could if if someone was like, you can either take a ticket to see Beyonce perform at this big arena, ⁓ or I'll give you a ticket to go to the top of the world festival and hear this celebrity in Tajikistan. I'm sorry, I love Beyoncé. I respect everything about her, but I would go to Tajikistan. INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: Not just because it's exotic, but because it's it's it it feels more special, like those people ha there's a history there, yeah. INVISIBLE: It's a yeah. Mm-hmm. And be and so another crazy thing was like, ⁓ where'd Carl go? Right. Invisible. Right. He is invisible. So and the the the thing is is like the Beyonce show is kinda like you know what you're gonna get. The Beyonce show you're gonna have lights and you're gonna have all this big all is there's a a different energy Global Music Collective: ⁓ He gone. kate: There's just an I Global Music Collective: Do you wanna make the joke? Okay, he's invisible. I know, yeah, okay. Yeah. Yeah. kate: ⁓ Richie, that was good. Global Music Collective: Mm. INVISIBLE: Because of the electronics that are able to be there. The Roof of the World had a cool stage with a you know, the the backdrop was zip tied up that said Roof of the World Festival. ⁓ they had a small LED screen and the entertainment was what won. Like, I have a video that plays behind me when I'm doing arena shows, and it is a well-produced video with kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: images of me and you know lights and really cool stuff that will distract you from the fact that I might not always be doing something cool. I might just be playing a song and getting ready for the next thing to happen. And like the Beyonce show. Beyonce's gonna go hard in the paint for 10 minutes, walk off the stage, get some electrolytes and some water and you know touch her makeup up and her dancers are going to go hard in the paint. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. kate: D and I. INVISIBLE: But at these shows where you have a festival where you have that guy or that lady and they are doing nothing but using the talents that they have to entertain the people for that 45 minutes to an hour, to me, that started to become a little bit more special when you just get to see the raw talent. And then on top of that, these people know these songs by word of mouth or their friends and family and the elders singing the songs and telling them who sang the song. So the kids that are going, you have a 10-year-old kid that doesn't have access to the internet that comes to a show outside that they that their family traveled. Don't know how they got there or how they traveled to get there, but they traveled to get to this show. And the kids know the songs because their parents have passed it down. Seeing as that is still a thing in this day and age, that made it really special. So not only did the kids know kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: All those songs, but me singing some of the cut songs and teaching the kids like Earth Wind and Fire and like, you know, I'm saying badia, bad yah, da da da da da and by the second chorus I got, you know, thousands of kids singing it. I'm like, You're welcome, Earth Wind and Fire. I just threw you an alley oop. Out here, change. Right. I'll take the royalties from that one there. You know, though that's amazing. kate: Hay Global Music Collective: Yeah. I'll take some royalties from that, please. ⁓ you're touching custom royalties. kate: Yeah. I feel like it it all goes it just all goes back to this whole, you know, it's about things that are real. And I think, you know, Richie was talking recently about the AI stuff and not to go into AI. But ⁓ you know, I've I've found a lot of interesting possibilities in where technology is going. And at the same time, it feels lately like One thing I love about what's happening with technology is people are starting to realize more and more how much we actually like imperfection and we actually like just connecting with each other and like, yeah, the everyone's talking about the World Cup and they're talking about the World Cup because people are connecting with each other and having fun and and the I don't know, like Beyoncé can have this perfect face and the sound can be perfect, you know, and they don't want any mistakes so that everyone can get the perfect show, but Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: In the end, do we want the perfect show? You know, if you got to see Beyonce after a couple beers at a you know, sitting outside at the top of the world festival and like she thinks no one's watching, like that would be so much more compelling. I don't know. I'm into it. Anyway, ⁓ Richie, la s is there what what else is what else do we got here? Yeah Maybe we should just do three songs each. I don't know. No, no, no, keep going, keep going. You INVISIBLE: Be fine. Richie Richie, you only made it you made it three songs before you got interrupted. Global Music Collective: No, this is Yeah. Nobody wants old Rich's list. No, no, no. That's I feel like a DJ. It's my first time. I'm like, ⁓ dude, you guys wanna hear my songs? ⁓ No, that's I there's a lot of good segues in there, and I'm gonna we got to go to a former Soviet country as well in Azerbaijan. And that second one on there is called Sened Kalmaz. INVISIBLE: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Global Music Collective: We got to work with like their local rock star. His name was Cameron Sailor Lativov. And we like got to cover this song with him on stage. Of course, he's not on Spotify. And of course, yeah, I can't find him anywhere, but he like won Azeri Idol. ⁓ it rem it reminded me of a story where we went on Space T V was their news channel, and they had us come and do like some press for the tour. But they're like, It's just it's we're only gonna film for like three or four hours. And we're like, wait, I'm sorry, what kate: ⁓ wow. Yeah. INVISIBLE: ⁓ ⁓ Global Music Collective: Most interviews are like, you know, a ten minute spot, maybe a half hour. ⁓ so we sat there on the on live news for like four hours just there, and they would interview us, and there was this guy that came out with an accordion, and they're like, You should you know, a gesture like you should do you should do sing with him. And I like, All right, I'll beatbox with him and he does so for like the next seven minutes there was an accordion track that played. He didn't even play it, but he just like mimed the accordion. INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: Who Global Music Collective: And then I just beatbox like for like seven minutes. Like this is great TV. Great TV. But anyway, so yeah kate: See, this is what I'd pay millions for. Yeah. That's amazing. Can you find that video somewhere? INVISIBLE: Mm-hmm. I wanna see that. Global Music Collective: I'm sure it's on the internet, so I think I've I've found it before, but yeah. Yeah, you can see our after three and a half hours the whole group was like, Can we go now? ⁓ But anyway, so Senator Kalmaz is like this it's a it's like you said, Carl, it's like a song that they've known in Azerbaijan for generations and it's been passed on and then like done by these famous artists and made famous again. And I w when we sang it with kate: Please do the research so we can post that in our substack. Global Music Collective: Cameron, it was like it was such a big hit for us to sing like Senator Kalmas and you know, w we didn't speak the language but we knew enough to say that. They're like, You've done us this great INVISIBLE: Which is always funny when you get a chance to sing songs, you have no idea what they're saying. We could be the we could be big up in grammar or we are cussing out the entire community. Yeah. Global Music Collective: That's right. Yeah, yeah, well a lot of these like folk songs are like we have rebelled against the tyrant of the and you're like, ⁓ I didn't know I was like siding with you with this is a public diplomacy. Yeah. My passport's been blocked. ⁓ up at number one I have Augenbling. The it's got the coolest hook. It's in German. It's like when your eyes shine INVISIBLE: I didn't Right, I can't go home now, thank you. Yeah. Yeah, who's not getting on the plane? This guy right here. kate: Ha ha. Global Music Collective: Everything is forgotten. Dynamaugen machen bling bling analysis for Gessen. It's this like cool kind of dance hall song. It's it's great. And Germany for a w I don't know why. I'm sure there's some you know some history behind this, but Germany has an amazing like Jamaican dance hall ⁓ culture to it. There's like, especially in Berlin, there's a lot of great reggae. Yeah, it's I Mm-hmm. Yeah, it's cra and kate: Okay Alles ist vergessen. Berlin clubs. Yeah. Yeah. INVISIBLE: This the ska music kind of thing. Yeah. Global Music Collective: The first time we went there we went to like this w we went to a reggae show and I was like, I this is not what I expected in Germany at all. But seed is ⁓ they were huge out like ten years ago maybe out there and we on our tours in Germany, like we'd not shut up. We would sing the song constantly. So made the list. ⁓ breathing underwater, metric is just I just like them and This song is like anytime it's like a a female vocalist with some like big guitars and big ⁓ big choruses that just hit and grow and grow and grow. I'm I'm so into it. ⁓ May tree kate: I always wanted to be that. I always wanted to be that lady. You know, like the port the portis head lady or the ⁓ you know who just sings like this and then there's like really cool sounds behind her and so you get to be a rock star even though you're just anyway. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Well, there's still time, Kate. You can Carlift. ⁓ May Tree is a they're an a cappella group. They are from Korea. They've actually like blown up since we met them for the first time. We knew them before they were cool. ⁓ they started they started doing like covers of like the Windows opening sound or like the the theme song for ⁓ what's it kids like Squid Game. They did all of those kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Kind of like little covers a cappella and it like they blew up. But they were great. They drank us all under the table. We thought we were you know, we thought we could hang with them, but yeah, I don't know, something about Korean alcohol and Well, they sing so sweet, they're like alcohol Yeah, we got there. kate: ⁓ cool. INVISIBLE: Good times. kate: Korean acapella Korean Accahol Acapella Hall Al Capella Al Capella INVISIBLE: Alc al cappella. Al cappella. There it is. kate: ⁓ we got there. INVISIBLE: We made it. We got there, Kate. Global Music Collective: We got there. ⁓ Yeah, they but they sing so s like sp quietly and on pitch and perfectly and it's like da da da da da da da It's so subtle and and thoughtful and then they just drink you under the table. It's it's we thought we had ⁓ but they got us. ⁓ da da da down to ice cream man. It's just this like other track. It's a cover, but ice cream man is like this. I don't know. When I first heard it, I was just driving in my car and it hits this like moment where they hit the guitar part in it and it's amazing. And it's not a song I'd ever heard from Van Halen. You've heard everything else from them, but Ice Cream Man. Yeah, you gotta check it out. And then ⁓ eighty three, I just I got obsessed with them with traveling. It's like perfect travel music and it's huge and it's cinematic and funky and this has been out for like fifteen years now. kate: ⁓ that's awesome. Long time. Global Music Collective: And now it's starting to pop back up on on reels and people put it on their Yeah, I've seen it a few times now. Commercial it's like the perfect commercial music too and I've always wanted kate: Is it really? ⁓ that's awesome. I used to love ⁓ too. Yeah. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah, their catalog is gonna live forever because of ⁓ commercials. Yep. It's just ha it's just easy fun music. kate: ⁓ yeah, good point. Yeah. Yeah. It's just well done too, yeah. That's awesome. Richie's loose Global Music Collective: It is. It is. And I loved it. So that is my list. Thank you very much. Fire fire fire kate: ⁓ my god, I really missed Carl's sound effects. Like back during COVID, we would have to do all of these like online programs. And yeah, it was always like this. Like Richie always had good sound, good lighting, good tech. I always kind of looked like a mess. And Carl always had just like sound effects and different video angles. And yeah, like so so anything. you know what? I feel kind of like INVISIBLE: My goodness. Way too many buttons. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Richie, what do you think right now? Should I feel like we should go into Carl's. And Carl, are you okay? We're going extra long right now, but like I feel like we can always edit stuff down as okay. I like how Richie goes, ooh. INVISIBLE: No, I'm good. No, this is keeping me from going outside and cutting the grass. I bought a new line mower. So that was me Yeah, so yeah. ⁓ no, this is ⁓ Kate. So hold on a second. I went to went to ⁓ Lowe's and ⁓ walked in. I was like, I need a couple spark plugs, gotta tune the lawn mower up, never done it before, mind you. And I went in for a spark plug and they have a new like the electric lawn mowers, the battery powered lawn mowers, and the dude started telling me about them, and I walked out with the Rolls Royce of electric lawn mowers. ⁓ kate: Yeah. ⁓ yeah. I d I'm sure you sit on it like a tractor, right? 'Cause it's you. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: No, no, you just push it, but it's got a it's got a motor with like four different speeds, and then it's got turbo cutting powers. That the lawn mower has a dashboard right up. It's got a dashboard with like ⁓ the battery power and the turbo functions and this cutting. And if you want to mulch or bat, it's ⁓ it's it's awesome. The battery itself is huge. ⁓ it's the greatest, but I just you kate: Do we need this? Global Music Collective: Too much. kate: Turbo functions. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: put I put headphones on and you like pull the or push the the gas the the go and just walk behind it. It's amazing. It is the like there's no physical effort at at all into cutting the grass. This is it's amazing. So I'm actually looking forward to cutting the grass, but it's No. It's it's hot outside. So I'm actually cool. Yeah whatever. Cut the grass. I'm I'm busy. kate: Ha ha ha. ⁓ my god. Well, too bad you're stuck with us for a while. We've got we got two more playlists less left to listen to. ⁓ yeah. Yeah, so you're not going out there. INVISIBLE: Yes, but no, I'm excited to to it it also took me a half hour to get on, so we're running actually behind schedule because of the kate: Yeah, he's busy. Well, and we knew we were gonna also catch up for like a million hours. The hard thing now is gonna be editing this down, Richie, 'cause there's gonna be s we can make it two episodes. ⁓ Richie, who should go next? Should it be Carl or me? INVISIBLE: Good luck. Yeah. 'Cause I also Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: I think I kinda wanna save Carl for last 'cause I'm sh he's like the special guest, but kate: Okay. Yeah. No no that's a good idea. I'll go fast too. ⁓ but you have to screen share because I still don't know how. Please. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Car, are you cool to go last as the grand finale? INVISIBLE: Sure. Yeah, 'cause there'd be some extra nonsense you're definitely gonna have to edit out. It'd be easier to cut it off the end. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. That's true. Alright, I just don't want to keep you too long. kate: I do. I wanna hang out. I'll never forget go ahead. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Kate, do you know what I was so remember the ⁓ the hot dog? The hot dog pen from Uganda? You mentioned it earlier. Right. So okay, ⁓ Kate mentioned ⁓ this hot dog pin that we got at the ambassador's house in Uganda, and we all got ⁓ they were different like pens that were supposed to be representative of the Fourth of July in the United States. One one of the pens was a hot dog with ketchup and mustard on it that we all vowed we were gonna. kate: Yep. Of course I do. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's USA. INVISIBLE: Keep this pen. We were gonna keep this pen together, all three of us forever to show our unity. Right. I lost mine. I lost, I lost my hot dog pen. It was in a backpack somewhere and it fell out when I was going through TSA. So that pen is probably still traveling the world. ⁓ but I went on Amazon and ordered a replacement. kate: I still have mine. Global Music Collective: BFFs Gone. Shut it down. INVISIBLE: I just felt as though it would be wrong for me not to tell you guys I have a bootleg hot dog pin I'm still traveling with. It's not the it's not the original pin. It's it's ⁓ it's at my shop right now on on a tour bag. Yeah, but I kate: Where is your bootleg hot dog? ⁓ I feel like that's just as special because you put the effort in to acknowledge our hot dog pin. Richie probably just doesn't even have it and doesn't even care about it. Do you still have your hot dog? You still have your hot dog? I have my hot dog. My hot dog's under my bed. I won't waste time finding it. Actually, no, maybe I no I won't. Global Music Collective: It's bootleg. INVISIBLE: I did go I did go find the hot dog cook. Global Music Collective: It's the hot dog you chose. I don't even care. Wow, how dare you? I do. It's somewhere. I mean I still have my hot dog. INVISIBLE: What is the thing? Global music collective after dark conversation. My hot dog is under the bed. I know exactly where my hot dog is at. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: No I won't now. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ⁓ kate: I was thinking that we were talking about spark flags. I was like, don't make the joke, don't make the joke. Global Music Collective: You should hope so. INVISIBLE: Good now. Global Music Collective: Alright, do you want to do your playlist now or what? Okay. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, week three playlist from Kate Bass. INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: Yeah, let's let's do it. Global Music Collective: Yay. Okay. kate: Okay. ⁓ so what what deeply Okay, I know we're not supposed to play clips on our podcast, but I d can I try because I need you to hear I don't think Richie remembers this first song. Global Music Collective: You can try it, see if we get banned. Oliva Oliva No Okay. That's I was like I know this song. I don't know it at all. kate: Mm no. Wait, you were right. Can you hear it? Global Music Collective: That was exactly right. Yeah. ⁓ they were kate: Okay. ⁓ Global Music Collective: Tell us that kinda s that's one of those songs where like as soon as you hear it, it's like kate: Quiz. No, no, no, no. Not a word. Do you know what it is, Richie? Do you recognize that's on Carl doesn't because he was asleep. Global Music Collective: He was just was that during our ⁓ our safari? kate: Okay, so ⁓ deeply disappointed in both of you. That song I went through I went through so much trouble to find that song. That song, Oliwa by Aroma Music, we went on a safari. d the great DJ Invisible, the great Richard Robot, and me, Kate Bass, went on a safari with our friend Mia Stallone when we were doing a program. Global Music Collective: Shut it down. Hot dog's gone. Song lost. It's all over. INVISIBLE: Go. kate: ⁓ the goat. We had a flat tire also. I don't know if you guys remember when we were coming back in the middle of like northern Uganda. and our safari driver, who I believe his name was Arnold, had a he had a mixtape that had two songs. It had two songs on it, and it was about a nine-hour drive to get up to whatever park we went to and nine-hour drive back. And ⁓ Carl was asleep for most of the drive. Global Music Collective: That's right. INVISIBLE: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: Arnold power. Arnold equal power. INVISIBLE: I do remember that. So relaxing. So relaxing. kate: He was very, very relaxed. Richie and I were wide awake talking about, like, you know, wanting to create cross-cultural global music programs and stuff. And here we are. It was a very special time. It was the formation of our friendship. But that song, Oliwa, played on loop for nine hours. And Richie and I would sit there and he would be like Carl, do you remember this song? Does it come back? Yeah! INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah, yeah, yeah. INVISIBLE: I do remember because every nine right, I do remember that because we had several other songs that we were were creating in between because there was a song about like trash fires or something. Yeah, that song was getting remixed. Yeah. The roadside fire. There was there was so many things that there was so much time. So much time. Yeah. kate: Gonna make you my baby mama. There's one like that. ⁓ yeah, the trash fire. Roadside fire. Mm-hmm. Roadside fire. I believe is the tune. Yeah. Just so much time. Just in a car. Kind of hot, just a hot van. Yeah, with that music. So anyway, that's that's Oliwa. I just I had to bring that out for you guys. ⁓ it's I wouldn't say. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Roadside fire. Yep. INVISIBLE: It's kate: I know anything else about this song. I've just heard it more than most human beings probably on the planet have heard that song other than Arnold, our Safari guide, who has two songs on his playlist. ⁓ Global Music Collective: Well, he he may have it stuck in his C D player just like you have Queen stuck in yours. So maybe that's kate: Yeah. ⁓ i actually it's very much like that. That you're totally right. INVISIBLE: That's probably what it was. That was just something that was just stuck and he just didn't mention the fact that it was stuck. Maybe they won't realize that this is the only thing playing. kate: It's just like the only ⁓ my God. That was a good impression. Okay, so I'm just gonna say for the rest of my list, for a lot of it actually, I really leaned in. So he this is a story when I met Carl and Richie, but I think I already kind of knew Richie a little bit better at this point. Global Music Collective: Nine hours later. INVISIBLE: Yeah. They seem to be having fun. Global Music Collective: All right. kate: ⁓ Carl was very excited about the fact that I was an opera singer. And for those of you listening to our podcast who don't know who I am, I am originally a trained opera singer. I performed as a professional opera singer for a very large portion of my life. ⁓ I also performed on Broadway. And those things, to me, when hanging out with two hip-hop guys who have like toured the world with these big name, you know, hip-hop artists like Method Man. I felt like such a nerd. Like I didn't and Carl kept getting so excited about how I was an opera singer. I was an opera singer. I was an opera singer. And I think I wasn't like not as comfortable in my skin of just being kind of, I don't know, quirky in that scenario. I thought that it was really boring and uncool. And so anyway, Carl kept saying over and over again how he thought it was interesting, he thought it was unique, he was so intrigued by it. ⁓ it's taken me a very long time and many years of working with artists around the world who do different genres than me for me to finally kind of come around and be like, Yes, not only do I love opera, but it is it is cool. And I wanna tell you guys about why. So the the track that I have on my playlist is not the kind of track that people are gonna be listening to these playlists drive down the highway and all of a sudden just like rock it out to you know. See Mikyama no mimi from La Boem. But ⁓ it is one of the most famous opera arias ever. I do either of you know it? Do either of you know La Boem? Yeah? Richie? ⁓ Carl's lying. He's such a liar. You've got your sunglasses, so I didn't get it. Okay. Do you guys know the Broadway musical Rent? Okay. Okay, so Rent was based on the story of La Boem. It was like a modern retelling of La Bohem. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah, sure. Yeah. Mm. Global Music Collective: Yeah, sure. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Yes. Global Music Collective: I've heard of it, yes. kate: La Bohem was an opera written by Puccini in Italy many, many, many years ago. And it's about a group of artists who are living like Bohemians. They're all poor. They're all living ⁓ many of I think at least one of them dies of l what was it? What was it that everyone died of? Consumption. ⁓ Yeah. Throw it at consumption joke. Anyway, ⁓ but so it's actually a really Global Music Collective: Consumption. kate: Kind of amazing opera and it's a beautiful story. It's up just about different artists trying to trying to live and living their best lives in these circumstances that you would assume are not romantic, but it's deeply romantic the way that the opera's written. So anyway, this aria is one of my favorite opera arias of all time. The lyrics in it, it's a woman who's ⁓ introducing herself to this guy, and she's saying, like, My name's Mimi, but it's actually not Mimi. They just all call me Mimi. It's actually ⁓ Lucia is her real name. ⁓ and she's she just starts telling him about her life. She lives in this tiny little apartment that's you know, just like in a rooftop apartment. It's this little dinky place, she's very poor, but there's this beautiful part of the aria where she says, I live in this like just alone in this little room, but when the sun rises, I get the first rays of the sunshine. The first kiss of the spring is mine. And it it it's just one of the most powerful moments to me as a singer because it's this like, yeah, we're artists. We live these weird lives, but we get to experience things like the Roof of the World festival in Tajikistan. And, you know, we're like talking about our crazy stories with our tires going out in Uganda. And I guess every time I hear that line, I feel this deep pride of like. I have, I should, you know what, Richie and I talk about this all the time. We work really hard and we should be making a lot more money than we are for what we do. and I don't know, I guess I feel kind of like when I hear things like that and I remember all of the beauty that I get to have of being an artist. That's that's what's so powerful. So anyway, I know I just like totally brought nobody's beer, peer, peering me over this, but thank you. Thank you, Carl. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. kate: ⁓ but the other thing I just wanted to say about this aria is I hope you both actually sit and listen to it. And when you listen to it, I hope you just like turn on your nice speakers and just actually sit and listen to the whole aria. Like don't distract yourself, just listen. And what affects me so much about opera is the way that the human voice is capable of sounding and the the incredible work that it takes to be able to sing like this. ⁓ there's no auto-tune, there's no microphones, there's no ⁓ there's no manipulation of any kind of the sound that's coming out of this woman's mouth. Morella Fraini is a very, very famous opera singer ⁓ from you know back when they were just recording records, ⁓ vinyl records. And when you listen to her voice sing in this recording and you hear her high notes, it's like just try yourselves, just try really quickly, try going, woo! Yeah, okay, do it separately. Carl, go first. Okay, Richie, go. Okay, when you sing a high note as an opera singer, you take that high part when you go, woo, the high part, and you hold it. Woo! Like that's how you make the high note. And it's not pretty when we do it as humans, right? Like it's ugly, it's scratchy, it sounds crazy. When you hear her sing high notes in that opera, it's like one of the most incredible things I've ever heard a human voice do. So INVISIBLE: Which is why Kate, I was trying to explain to you how it is so cool. Cause in the normal person's world, we don't run into people that have the talent that opera singers have. It is a very special talent. And to hear someone explain another opera singer's talent and then just give us that quick like, say woo. And I'm like, woo, whatever. And then to explain to somebody like the highest note that you just hit. kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: that person can sustain and make it sound good. Because Richie basically she said, Carl, you suck as a high note singer, but listen to her. Like you you hit a you hit a high note and it sounded bad. Listen to it sung right for a long term. So yeah, nice try, but listen to it done right. No. Yes. So kate: And vibrate. Yeah. Global Music Collective: She's like that's no good. Yeah, good nice try, but ⁓ yeah, leave it to her. Yeah. kate: Well, and that's interesting, Carl, because as I'm telling this, I just have to say, I don't know if we're gonna put this on the podcast, but even me just explaining to you guys the opera aria, everyone's very quiet and attentive. And I think there's something about that for me, having grown up as an opera singer, that makes me feel like it must not be fun. It must not be exciting, like everything else. That we love is like fast-paced and loud and fun and and it's partying and people get into it. And opera, it's like you have to like sit and listen and it's talking about all these techniques. And I just I don't know. I I I know that something about that is inaccessible to some people, but then I also just wish that that we all understood that there are so many different kinds of music and different ways to enjoy different kinds of music. And sometimes I wake up in the morning and I wanna like dance, and sometimes I wake up in the morning and I wanna listen to soft, quiet music and reflect at the rain falling outside. And one thing I've always loved about both both of the two of you is that you guys are the same, you know? Like I I've I've known yeah, in every way. But yeah, I guess I feel like here we are, we're doing this podcast. We're talking about different styles of music. I found myself in trying to create my playlist for our episode we're gonna do with Carl. Global Music Collective: In every way. INVISIBLE: Every single way. Global Music Collective: Really say goodbye. kate: I found myself wanting to put on all my cool songs to be like, Yeah, look, Carl, look, you'll get this and then I was like, No, Carl probably wants to hear about opera. He probably wants to like INVISIBLE: And the cool thing is you have just explained why AI will not take over a hundred percent of the ability for me to be a DJ. The AI does not know what or does not know how to read people's emotions. So like it may be an overcast day. And yes, AI may know that it's gonna be an overcast day. So you want to play gloomy songs, but there are still right. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Phoebe Bridgers. INVISIBLE: There are still songs that will pull an emotion out of somebody depending upon w other factors. Like, you know, it's just you have just explained why I will continue to work. Thank you very much. Yes indeed. Thank you. I'm gonna take that clip and play it for people. I just had this conversation with a drummer, a drummer friend of friend of mine, who he's using AI as a fun toy. And there's a time and a place for it, but kate: Yeah, you you're welcome. ⁓ Yeah. INVISIBLE: You know, AI is getting so much better in the DJ world of being able to blend songs together, but to curate the emotions of an event, it it's not there yet. So kate: And until I I have to say, like, you know, and last year, ⁓ both Richie and me got really deep in playing around with deep tech and learning, you know, I learned how to code in Python, like I went into AI. And what's really turned me off from the whole thing isn't the po like I was saying earlier, it's not the possibilities. Like the possibilities are still there, but ⁓ it's being used now just to like optimize everything and and to to take the place of what humans are good at and INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah. kate: I think that's that's where I stopped. That's where I lost interest. I've I haven't been coding in Python in months. Not because I was having a problem with it, but I just got I got bored with the whole like, ⁓ we're just gonna replace humans so humans can sit around and and what, eat bonbons? Like I don't I I don't think that ⁓ so AI can can understand and approximate what it is that we like. If you say, I want a rainy day, AI can do a pretty good job, like you're saying, of of putting some, you know, slow indie folk music or something in the background. But these these like personal intimate understandings of other humans, there's so many nuances to all of us. Anyway, I agree with you, Carl. ⁓ INVISIBLE: No. Yeah. And just hearing you hearing you explain opera, I think is where I th you know, you were like music is a ma all different genres of music are amazing. And personally, like my parents listened to a little bit of everything when I was growing up, so I've been exposed to it a lot more than most. But the opera aspect of it has always intrigued me because it is a form of music that is so vocal. And you have the ability to contort your voice in so many ways and hold those notes, that's like kate: Yeah. So there's a moment in this aria where she hits one of those high notes and she sings it so quietly. And it's so beautiful. And as an opera singer, knowing the amount of technical training and and you know work that goes into it is so impressive. But what I also find so beautiful about opera is it was written in a time when we that was that that was our form of entertainment and at least in the West and INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: These were stories that they're telling. And so the moment when she sings quiet is when she says the word le primavere, which she's saying, like this is the moment where she's talking about how the rays of the sun came come out and and I I get those rays of the morning. I might not be rich, but those rich people don't get those first rays of the morning sun in the little and and then she she gets quiet and she sings in the springtime. Like just it's like this moment of tender beauty. And the the mix of the fact that she's singing this incredibly high note and she's singing it quiet because she's talking about this like tender, intimate moment. I don't know, the what people I wish more people could learn about is like why the orchestra swells when it does and why the lines are written the way they are and I can't you know, I can't waste too much of our time talking about it. But ⁓ yeah, I I'm I'm glad you like it. And I feel like all of these things can exist and be wonderful. They don't it doesn't have to be always Cool all the time and I think I've learned that lesson from both of you. So anyway, that's my that's my opera spiel. All the time. INVISIBLE: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: Even though we're cool all the time, so cool. Cool. INVISIBLE: All the time. Wake up in the morning, cool. Go to bed at night, cool. Brush my teeth, cool. Cooler than most. Lost better than everyone else. Bathroom break, way cool. Look at me, drying my hands. So cool. Eating pasta, cooler than Lady in the tramp. Sorry, ⁓ when you kate: Ha ha. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. kate: That you went to Lady in the tramp. Like why? Anyway, I could go through the rest of my list, but I we don't have a ton of time. It's not really that basically, so I'll give yeah. I'll go I'll go quickly through. Yep, I'll go quickly through it. ⁓ so the original cast of Hades Town, Epic Three, is the only other one that I really wanted to go far into on this one, which is Global Music Collective: Lady in the champ. Well, there's not a lot of famous pasta eating scenarios, unfortunately. INVISIBLE: Right, I'm sorry. Yeah. Right. Global Music Collective: Well give us a couple give us a couple more highlights and then we gotta we gotta hit our top threes too. But we can do that at the end. kate: ⁓ that's a Broadway show. So I was like, okay, as long as I'm gonna go into other genres, I'll throw in a Broadway show. ⁓ Anayas Mitchell, do guys know who she is? Okay. She's kind of like a she's a singer-songwriter from I believe from the days of like the Indigo girls and stuff. What in in I right? I don't know. ⁓ she's a a singer-songwriter and she she wrote a musical called Hades Town, ⁓ which is really awesome and it's about it's the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. And ⁓ this INVISIBLE: Yeah, I yeah. Global Music Collective: Introduce us. Yeah. kate: P this song is at the very towards the end of the musical, ⁓ the narrator, this guy who's ⁓ I don't remember the name of the character or of the myth, so this is embarrassing. He's the one who's telling the story. There's a name for him. Anyway, he sings about ⁓ yeah, but there's like a name for the Greek dude. Anyway, ⁓ he keeps singing throughout the whole musical this song called Epic, where he sings about Hades, who's the god of the underworld. INVISIBLE: The narrator? ⁓ god. kate: But Hades in this musical is also a really good depiction of a man where power has changed him. And and ⁓ the the fable goes that Hades fell in love with Euryd, ⁓ not Eurydice, with Persephone, right? He brings her down into the underworld. Do guys know about this myth? Okay, so Hades, the god of death, falls in love with the goddess of spring. And ⁓ her ⁓ INVISIBLE: Vaguely I kate: He ends up pulling her into the underworld. She became becomes the queen of the underworld. ⁓ that's that's ⁓ that's mythology, folks. I didn't write it myself. But so ⁓ at the very end of this musical, the the ⁓ the narrator is singing about Hades and how he fell in love with Persephone and how that that beautiful love changed him in that moment from being this hard-hearted king, but then how time went on and he fell back into his hardened ways and there's just something that's so human about it and the f the way that the song kind of paints the corruption and how power kind of changes a person ⁓ is just really powerful to me. And it's just cool because it's a Broadway show and it's sung like a like like it's just songwriting. So ⁓ I thought I would share that with you guys so you could get a taste of some new contemporary musical theater being written that's actually, you know, not cheesy. And I mean, I know everyone knows Hamilton, but this is another one. ⁓ and then the other songs, Crucify Your Mind. Rodriguez is from Detroit. You know about him, right, Carl? Do you know about him? Okay, so Rodriguez was a folk singer in the 70s from Detroit who his ⁓ I think his name is Sixto. Sixto? Yeah, you know. Okay. Okay. No, it's okay, King of Detroit, no problem. INVISIBLE: Sure. ⁓ yes, yes. I'm sorry. I do know who you're talking about. I do have heard that yes, sorry. Global Music Collective: We'll cut out the we'll cut that out, don't worry. We don't want to make anybody seem ignorant. Yeah, take that key back. INVISIBLE: Right. I was about to say it took me a second. It's like okay, right. Right. I won't be able to walk the city streets anymore. Right. kate: Say we can cut it out, but I do have to say I think it's interesting when we don't know these things because I think it's it's an important thing for people to remember that the biggest expert of a thing might anyway. This guy Rodriguez ⁓ was a total flop in the United States, total flop, but he ended up becoming immensely successful in post apartheid South Africa. Or not post, not post. It was the 70s, so yeah, it ⁓ Global Music Collective: Sure. INVISIBLE: It would yeah. Global Music Collective: Was he the guy where they he like didn't realize he was famous until somebody told him about it? INVISIBLE: Yeah. He just got he just recently got a Detroit Music Award for ⁓ just like a life lifetime achievement award kind of thing. And that was the first time I had heard his story. He had no idea he was famous in another part of the world. Global Music Collective: Amazing. In another is that was is there a documentary called Sugar Man about him? Is that what this is? kate: Yes! ⁓ you guys do know him! Yes! This is him! Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Fascinating story. And I just love this this song. If you haven't heard it, you share. It's just a great song. His music is great. It's great, ⁓ great vibes. I like to talk about vibes a lot. It's kind of ridiculous. Dopamine by Robin. That's just a funny story. Robin, you know, everybody knows Robin, I would imagine. She's this pop singer who was really famous for INVISIBLE: Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Global Music Collective: I've seen the documentary. I know this guy. Okay. kate: What's that song? Now I'm dancing on my own. Anyway, ⁓ let's let's let's just move on. I was sitting at this like really pretentious clothing store that a friend of mine was shopping in. I couldn't afford a damn thing, so I just sat in a chair by the front door and like this is not today. Yeah. So yeah, I was just kind of sitting at this chair and the really super too cool for school shopkeepers. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Think this w this is not my style. I would buy it I would buy ten of them, but today I will I INVISIBLE: A nasty shopping here. kate: ⁓ were like near me and just very much ignoring me. And some song came on and I was humming along with it or whistling or something because I just am too old to care anymore if people don't think I'm cool. And the two Too Cool for School shopkeepers came up and were like, ⁓ my god, you know this song? And we ended up with this whole conversation and we've started talking about Robin for some reason. And this shopkeeper who genuinely, guys, it was like someone would come give him clothes, and he'd be like, Okay. INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: Yeah. Thank you. He's talking to me about Robin and he's like, Girl, did you hear about her new album? She came out with this new album. It's so great. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So I went and listened to the new album and it is in fact great. Robin has come out with a new album. It's really enjoyable. ⁓ I like dopamine. Richie, you and I were talking about listening through entire albums, and that's one that I just listened through and I was like, ⁓ it's actually a really good album to go start to finish. and then the other stuff, ⁓ there's Most of the other things here are just like great singer songwriters that I like. Sarah Borrellis, everyone knows her. You might not know this song. That's a a really great song she wrote. ⁓ You Were Mine by Tammy Nielsen, a friend of mine in Austin told me about her. I'd never heard of her before. ⁓ Richie, I know you love rockabilly music. ⁓ but she's ki I would say I would classify her kind of n kind of as a rockabilly. INVISIBLE: Her love. Global Music Collective: Do I? INVISIBLE: You know, it's your favorite. Global Music Collective: You you love it. You listen to it right now. Okay. kate: No, but she's got a great voice. You guys should should listen to it. It she doesn't look anything like what her voice sounds like. ⁓ I think everyone knows Asha from Nigeria. Global Music Collective: Fire on the mountain. kate: Asha is a very, very well-known singer-songwriter in Nigeria. Everyone in Nigeria knows about Afrobeats. Everyone outside of Nigeria knows about Afrobeats. ⁓ Asha is a singer-songwriter, and she is awesome and she's very successful. but ⁓ yeah, she's not Afrobeats, so I thought I would throw that in. ⁓ and then Los Morochukos is a Peruvian band. ⁓ it's an older, old school one that I learned about recently at a songwriting workshop of a young kid who was working on. INVISIBLE: They Sweet. kate: like actual metal music randomly started telling me about this Peruvian band. I looked it up and I was like, ⁓ that's nothing like what you seem to be into. And I love that you're a fourteen year old kid and you're into this. So that's that. And then Global Music Collective: Is is your ⁓ is that cry? Is this like when my guitar gently weeps, basically? Or kate: ⁓ my gosh, I have no idea. I don't think so. It doesn't sound like that song, but maybe it is. I don't know. I didn't put those two together. Global Music Collective: Why my guitar quando you rami guitar? kate: I don't think so. Go listen to it and see. Yeah. But that's it's it's a beautiful song and I really loved these musicians. I didn't know a lot about Peruvian music. And then the last two songs were just I just put them in because I think Lake Street Dive is great. I don't know if you guys know them. They're a great band. I think they were an American music abroad touring band at one point, ⁓ or at least Arts Envoy. And the I Love You, It's a Fever Dream came on my re my playlist this morning when I had my coffee and I was like, ⁓ this is Global Music Collective: I don't know. I'll have to listen to it. kate: Very different from everything else on my list, and it's really peaceful and very beautiful. So that's it. That's my list. I'm done. Global Music Collective: That's why you have eleven. You broke our ten song rule. How dare you? Ooh. kate: Yeah, that w that w yeah, it was it was I love you. It's a fever dream. But it's 'cause I love you guys. Global Music Collective: Fabulous. Well thank you, Kate. Again, if you are just checking us out for the first time, go to our Substack or Patreon where we post links to these playlists so you can actually listen to these songs and get to know what Kate is listening to on her day to day basis. INVISIBLE: I know. Don't know why my video, right. Tornado warning on town. kate: What's happening? ⁓ Carl? All right. The guest of honor. Global Music Collective: Well emergency. Tornado warning. Well, Carl is ⁓ experiencing ⁓ yeah, a dangerous, hazardous location. The warnings are out. ⁓ we have asked the incredible DJ Invisible to come up with ten songs that he ⁓ he's going moody and everything. ⁓ that he has in his extensive travels from the top of the world to the depths of the streets. INVISIBLE: Right. Change the lighting a little bit. kate: ⁓ purple lighting. Global Music Collective: What music has changed his life, his opinions, what has broken his algorithm? He's stretching out right now 'cause he needs to drop it like it's hot. The needle is about to hit the vinyl. It is DJ Invisible's list, which I don't actually have yet, but here it is. INVISIBLE: All right, so my list right now, as Kate was explaining her list and as Richie was explaining his list, I wanted to go first because yeah, you guys had like these deep stories to tell about all kinds of things. Now I do when I was curating my list, my list are all songs or except for the except for two of them, I didn't have anything to do with them. And you guys like kate: We gave you some time. INVISIBLE: I'm so happy that I actually actually you what I am happy that that I did this. So let me go ahead and share my list here. Global Music Collective: We guinea pigged you, we me we were like, We'll see how you can roll with this. What? He's even got a jeez. INVISIBLE: Right. Bam. kate: It's just so great. INVISIBLE: There we go. All righty, so Global Music Collective: Top ten songs from my tours. ⁓ wow. Look at ch Man. kate: ⁓ my god, you put blank up there. INVISIBLE: If you okay, so let's start at the top here. Let's start at the top of the list here. So the top of my list here, the Cuka Tornan song, ⁓ is a song that I went to Liberia with Farbion. And ⁓ it was it was ⁓ you know one of those State Department funded tours and Farbion were down there, he and I were down there and we ended up being Global Music Collective: This is incredible. INVISIBLE: At the same time they were doing like ⁓ a hundred years of US Liberian ⁓ interaction, and they were talking about all these serious political things that were going on, and they had ⁓ us down as the musical artists, and then they had a group of chefs that were there, and that that name just I slipped, they had a cookbook that was for sale at Target for a minute. And we did a big thing at the embassy. And it was another one of those cool things like the Fourth of July thing where you do this big thing at the NBC and there's all these really important people that are there. But the chefs were there and they did this great, awesome like meal for everybody. Far Beyond performed a couple songs. And then they were like, Okay, Invisible, you just keep going. And I ended up DJing in the dining room of the ambassador's house. Nobody was paying attention to me the whole time. I'm like kate: Just keep Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Ha ha ha INVISIBLE: Cutting up doing my thing. I'm like, let me keep so once I figured out nobody was paying attention, I kind of just like put up on some songs and ate or whatever. But it was just an another awesome opportunity. But as we were so while we were there, we got a chance to meet up and hang out with ⁓ a lady named ⁓ Julie Indy. Julie Indy. I think her name was Julie Indy. But she was they were calling her Ambassador Julie, and she is Basically a cultural ambassador from Liberia. And she's like a big musical deal in the Liberian community. And she introduced us to all these other really cool, awesome Liberian ⁓ entertainers. And one of them had like this crazy story, and people were telling us the story of how he was a child soldier and this, that, and the other. And we're like, ⁓ my goodness, this is wild. But all the musicians on this song were all rock stars. And carried themselves as rock stars. So we did some recordings and we were down there. And then once we got back, we started sending music back and forth to put these songs together. And the whole time I'm getting emails from different musicians like, You need to turn this up. This isn't mixed properly. Add these effects to it. And it's like, I'm like. kate: God. INVISIBLE: working on other stuff here and they were really hitting hard on like I wasn't mixing things properly or I you drop this out when you shouldn't have and put this back. But it ended up like their interaction and devotion to their project that we were working together on, it came out to be a great song. And like Far Beyond put this whole album together. And mind you, this was something nobody was gonna make any money off of, but they were that vested in it. kate: Ha ha. Well Global Music Collective: You're like, all right. INVISIBLE: And Farbion was that into it that they really rode me like Farbion was like, Did you get your part done yet? Like, I gotta real things I got I gotta the right. Well, this is the electric bills gotta be paid. So DJ or Carl Ollier has to go scratch these records for this paycheck. But it all ended up turning into such a great project. And this song is on my like Spotify playlist that I listen to it all the time. This is one of the ones. kate: Yeah. ⁓ Global Music Collective: Yeah, I got a cruise ship to kate: Yeah. I'm excited. INVISIBLE: And when it comes on, it's my obnoxious voice screaming and shouting. When the kids hear it, they're like, ⁓ my goodness. It makes me feel good too. Cause when the kids' friends are in the car with me and they hear it, they get excited, like, ⁓ wait, this is this is one of your songs. So I'm like, so that song right there, love that song. So the next one is the Bangla Banger. When we were in Bangladesh, we had a group of like Global Music Collective: This is you. Yeah, see yeah of this sort. INVISIBLE: Bosses. Like everybody there was serious. Like they were ⁓ I mean Global Music Collective: Well, they had that program, the next level program was there like ten years ago and created this entire hip hop culture. INVISIBLE: Yeah. A whole culture. Like ⁓ one of the guys that was there who was he he cameoed on this ⁓ at the end of the video that we made. ⁓ he ended up being on a a big hit song that was, you know, he made it stateside and he was like the hip hop rock star there. And like, you know, Punkster like was like Punksta was like the organizer and he that dude like he was the the he was like one of the the the OGs. I was just such a great vibe. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. Mongster. kate: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Even I don't pumpsta. INVISIBLE: And we put together basically the Wu-Tang clan of ⁓ Bangladesh at the time. And like everybody had their own different personalities. And ⁓ my god, what was the one guy's name? Like so many of their names were just gunshot player. Like so many of their names were like, you're you you might want to change your name if you want to go commercial. And you know, they they all like have seen and been a part of Global Music Collective: Yeah. ⁓ Gunshot play it. kate: Ha ha Global Music Collective: Yeah, it's not gonna INVISIBLE: music in their culture and seen music in our culture and kind of like draw drew different parts of it. And some of them look like they might have been like heavily into West Coast gangster music and, you know, there was flags and rags flying and like we're not gonna make it through the streets of these that it was just way we were gang banged out for a second. But it was just a great vibe. Like we're walking through the streets making this music video and Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: It was just like we I'll I'm I'm gonna share the YouTube because all these are on YouTube. I'll share the YouTube clip. So if you get a chance to watch this video, it was we made the video a couple of years after ⁓ the Marvel, the last Marvel movie came out, and I got access to all the Marvel effects. So when we made the I'm like editing the video in my hotel room the night before we had this big presentation, and our big show was on a Global Music Collective: I forgot about this. I've seen this video. INVISIBLE: Big stage in the entire back of the stage was a massive video wall. So I played the video when they performed the song. ⁓ my goodness. You couldn't tell us we were not the biggest thing in Bangladesh that day. And then during that program, we had ⁓ my goodness, what's our breakdancer, B-boy's name from Boston? El Nino. Dude is like Global Music Collective: ⁓ El Nino Amazing, yeah. INVISIBLE: a child celebrity, one of the he would he ended up being at the Olympics ⁓ as one of the coaches for the US Olympics. So I'm watching TV, watching the Olympics, and I'm like, that's El Nino. He was part of the ⁓ my gosh. So that Bangladesh program to me was like the program was amazing, but the music that came out of it and the relationships are that yeah, like it was just insane. Just it was crazy. So that was a lot of fun. kate: Really? ⁓ that's awesome. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: So moving on to ⁓ that was Global Music Collective: Amazing. And you ki you crushed that. That video I remember 'cause I had my own group and you dropped that video with all these effects and you're out there filming the thing and I was like INVISIBLE: Well Richie, that's what I'm saying. Like no, coming from the hip hop world where everything is a competition, like everything like every all the programs that we did, when we break off into our little subgroups, it all becomes some really cool competition. And you know that you know the strengths and you start to learn the strengths and weaknesses of your your ⁓ of the other groups. And Kate Richie doesn't show up with very many weaknesses, which makes it extremely hard. Global Music Collective: I gotta step my game up with this. Mm-hmm. It's healthy. INVISIBLE: So I showed up with all the smoke and mirrors of the editing software that I had. I was like, ⁓ guys, well, this song might not kill, but you guys are amazing. Let me throw in the Marvel sound of the Marvel. Look, look over here. Yeah. So I mean there's certain things that just like that that really helped. ⁓ okay, so moving forward to ⁓ yeah, here next. Yeah, so the ⁓ I love music. That was one of the kate: Ha ha ha. Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. kate: Mm-hmm. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Next one. ⁓ let me get out of there. Hang on. INVISIBLE: COVID that was coming out of COVID. ⁓ I love music was ⁓ one of the big collab songs that I was given the opportunity to be a part of. And it was I had a bunch of artists and they were from all over the continent of Africa, and we were able to everyone sent in a little bit of music and I had a track, the track went out. They all sent in their clips of them performing over the track. And some of them were them performing with like a walk man or a boom box and they were singing over it and I took all those clips and threw them into logic over the actual track and was able to extract their vocals and suppress yeah smoke and mirrors and puppet mastering. And I mean you guys remember that. During COVID and we were trying to put together songs and before everyone had access to some kind of daw you were just doing the best you could with whatever was sent in off of a cell phone. So Global Music Collective: Amazing. kate: Ha ha ha. Global Music Collective: Winging it. kate: Yep, I remember that. Even I had to do that. INVISIBLE: That I love music was one of the first ones. And I made a music video out of it just with whatever we had. Some people didn't send in videos, so then I'm using like stock footage of something. And so that was a fun one for me. Global Music Collective: Birds flying. kate: Mm-hmm. Carl, do you have are these on ⁓ is this on Spotify? Okay. Okay. INVISIBLE: No, these are not on Spotify. The videos are all on YouTube. This is before we were even trying to put this this is Yeah, this is everything's being shared on YouTube. Yeah. kate: Put stuff on Spotify. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yep. Well we will ⁓ for everybody out there, we will put together a special YouTube playlist that has all these on there as well. And Kate, you and I can maybe put together YouTube playlists as well. I know a lot of people get their music that way, but INVISIBLE: Yeah. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Yeah, a lot of ⁓ are are are YouTube friendly. ⁓ yeah, 'cause some of ⁓ you know, nobody was ⁓ willing to put up the money to they were just but hey, if everybody throws in five dollars, we get these on Spotify and then figure out how to divide the the the fractions of pennies it'll be generated from this. Yeah. Yeah. kate: Right. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: speaking speaking f yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah, I'll send you a check for thirty two cents in ten years. INVISIBLE: Well, that was another thing. So doing the ⁓ the Liberia program, one of the guys was like, So how are we gonna get paid for this? And I was like, Yeah, let me prepay you for it. So yeah, here you go, you know. So ⁓ moving on to the next one, the headed for the cream, the song from Kenya. And that was another one. It's like we did a program virtually Global Music Collective: Like, here's a dollar. That's more than anybody's getting. Right. kate: Ha ha. Yeah. INVISIBLE: with a bunch of ⁓ Kenyan artists and I got some rappers and they were serious about their their their flow and we put some beats together and they all sent me like various different ways. You know, I got MP3s with vocals, I got MP3s with vocals, and then a music video of them walking down the street and we put it together and that was a dope song because it had some some changes and transitions and the artists kate: Mm. INVISIBLE: That were used, you know, they were there were cool. And then other cool thing is I think I got a chance. Some of them ended up coming to another program. So I met a couple of them. And because they were on that song, got invited to other things that I wasn't at. So some of these songs have been launching pads for some of the artists to be a part of other programs where they actually got paid to perform. ⁓ and then I told all of them save these things. These are now your audition tapes. kate: ⁓ cool. Global Music Collective: That's right. Yeah. INVISIBLE: for your local festivals. ⁓ so I know a couple of the the ⁓ the participants ⁓ were able to use the ⁓ the slicky berry slicky berry yeah he's still sending yeah he's still sending dope stuff out so you know some of them are able to use these things as like a platform you know and using our names as like a reference like I still tell people I toured with Snoop and that helps open doors for me you know so them saying they work with DJ Invisible I'm like Global Music Collective: Mm. Slicky bear, yeah. He's still putting it out. He just texts it through another jam. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. kate: Mm. INVISIBLE: It might not open a doorb, it may open a cupboard or a closet. So use it if you can use it. ⁓ so moving on to and then there's another one. So the the Unity mixtape was an opportunity given to me to take 50 artists that were going to be a part of this Uganda program. All 50 of them sent me something, and I had to make all 50 songs mix into one. Global Music Collective: That's right. INVISIBLE: one thing and to me that was like that was epic so the unity mixtape was put out in two parts so that both clips are on youtube and i took all of the content and i actually had to make it like a mixtape so i was blending the songs the little clips that they gave me over a over over one beat kate: Remember this? Wow. INVISIBLE: And you know, dropping the bass out of some stuff to get it to mix. I'm speeding things up, trying to keep the pitch together to make one solid thing. And then we made a music video out of it. So I had video clips of everybody kind of singing and I'm trying to sync up their lips what what was going on. But that was when that was during the COVID time where there wasn't a whole lot of interaction with anybody other than what we're doing kind of right here. You know, so kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Ha ha ha. Right, right. INVISIBLE: I used what I could use and I started getting more heavily into the audio side of, you know, Zoom calls and getting my effects together and making sure that I had access to a switcher so that my videos looked a little bit cooler. Global Music Collective: Wow. You went to the kate: Case in point. INVISIBLE: What a nerd, right? So, you know, that was a that was a cool time for me because the video will show it. I mean, I started the video off. I was in the library of the house at the time, and I had just bought this video wall for my you know, my real job, which is owning my sound and lighting company. I had this video wall, I had nowhere to take it. So it's set up at the house. So, you know, I'm using it as a backdrop. It's just everything worked out great. So ⁓ that was a fun song. And then moving on to the ⁓ next one here, the Yali artist showcase. Yali stands for Young African Leader Initiative. And that was ⁓ that was big for me because once I found out who was submitting music, I was like, ⁓ my goodness, that why this is this is this is beyond my talent level. This was some of the largest African artists at the time that kate: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Ha ha INVISIBLE: bunch of them were like legit touring artists. And this is before the before we knew the term Afrobeat in the States. Yeah. These artists were like all like legit rock stars. And they're sending me their music and I'm like I'm looking them up. I'm like I don't you guys need Quincy Jones to be doing this. Why am I so Global Music Collective: This is before. kate: Mm. Yeah. Global Music Collective: ⁓ yeah. That's such a funny point. I think it happens to a lot of musicians. Well, if you keep going long enough you you get into rooms where you're you're not the top in the room anymore and you gotta pretend or you gotta make it work. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Right. That you should be there. Yeah. It's the so I've always bought into the fake it till you make it thing. And I was in one of those things where like, I am I'm not gonna say no. I am not gonna say no to this opportunity. I am going to do the b I am going to do the best that I can possibly do. I am going to ask for help where I need help. And I am going to do this because now I can say that I worked with these amazing artists. So Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: That project there was when I sent that off, I slept so good that night because prior to it I was on like nervous mode. Yeah. I was like, Come on, Carl, you got this. I'm asking folk, can you help me make sure that this actually works and musically makes sense? So that was a big one. Global Music Collective: Yeah. It's gonna get good. kate: Hey Carl, do you have a list of the names of the artists that were in that mixtape? The Yali. Cause one thing that might be kind of fun, just to make a Spotify playlist for you this week would be we could take some of those artists and and make a little Spotify playlist of what some of their stuff is doing too. You know what I mean, Richie? Yeah. If if you're able when we're done to just send us a list of just like some of the artists that you remember from these any of the programs, we could put something together that way. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Mm yeah. Yeah. ⁓ yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Yeah, I don't know for sure. Yep. And he I I made sure that I even on the YouTube clips, they're all listed on there too. And Wordsmith was part of Wordsmith was the host of that. He was like co-host with me on that mixtape. So it was like he introduced it and then threw it to me and then I did the the the music and stuff for it, but ⁓ or mixed their mixed the songs together. So that we can definitely do. Yeah. Mm-hmm. And that will help also for the Liberia song, because if those cats don't get their kate: ⁓ great. Okay. Great. Awesome. Thank you. Yeah. INVISIBLE: Props for that. They will not gonna right. You know, we didn't make any money. At least you could throw us a high oop. Yeah. Give us a shout out. ⁓ geez, I'd get in trouble. So ⁓ the next one, ⁓ that's the number, yeah. Right there. The Hello Indian Power was we were getting ⁓ my goodness. So I don't know if I this yeah, I'm totally gonna do it. So the kate: Ha ha ha Global Music Collective: Excuse me. ⁓ kate: Ha ha ha. Global Music Collective: Yeah. Yes a known is INVISIBLE: The Invisibles is a group that's not really a recording group. It was geez, we have to do some editing here. So I was given the opportunity, I was given the ask to put together a hip hop group or no, bring your hip hop group to this program. And I was like, I have a thing in in in this kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: And you were like, fake it till you fake it. INVISIBLE: You DJ Invisible doesn't say no to opportunities. So it's like, hey, put your group together and bring it, you know, and present it and to this opportunity. And I was like, of course. So over the next couple of weeks, I'm trying to put my group together and I just called my hip hop friends. I and the thing is is you as an entertainer, you only want to recommend people that you trust and you know can perform. So I called Richie and Kari and Mark. And then I was like, okay, cool. Okay, we need it would be awesome business wise to have a female MC. I wonder if Corona would do this. So I'm gonna give it a shot. So I called Miss Corona and presented the opportunity to her, and she was very excited about it. So I was like, we're looking good here. Global Music Collective: Shot. INVISIBLE: And then they wanted ⁓ they wanted like a complete hip hop experience. So I wanted to add a dancer. Usually that they didn't send dancers in this, so Hans became a background vocalist. He was our he was a dancer, but listed as a background vocalist. And then when we then when we gave Hans a mic, he turned into a monster. Yeah, he was fired. Yeah. kate: I did a program with him in Egypt. no way. Global Music Collective: He actually was yeah. He crushed it, yeah. kate: Wait, really? INVISIBLE: So he learned the background vocals to all of Corona's songs and did her ad libs throughout every show. So that was dope on a whole nother link. Mark ended Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: Can we can we also just say isn't isn't Hans? Hans is a dancer for what was that really famous? I a jabberwocky. Yeah. INVISIBLE: He was a stand in for the Jabberwockies. Yep. So we had it so he was one of two that I tried to get to go and they only let me take one. The other guy, D what he didn't go. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. kate: Yeah. But but Hans was a pretty as far as I 'cause I I actually met Hans in Egypt right after he did this with you guys in India. We actually were partnering on a musical theater program where we were teaching ⁓ musical theater programs in Egypt how to do Hamilton and Hans was doing the choreography for it. Anyway, Hans was telling like he's has this huge career doing like dance crew stuff. So to hear that he was actually a good singer too, like what INVISIBLE: Yeah. ⁓ wow. Yeah, Hans is a Hans is like one of the characters that if you ask him, like, hey Heinz, I need a B-boy, no problem. He can break dance. He spin on his head, do all that stuff. Hey Hans, I need a theatrical Broadway dancer that can do ballet. And then he shows up and then he can spin on his toes and touch his toes to his hand. Hey, hey Hans, I need you to do he can do he was Yeah, he's he DJs and he hosts. Now kate: Yeah. Okay. Global Music Collective: He DJed too, he hosted, he was teaching. kate: Wow, that's awesome. INVISIBLE: I I will tell him to this to to his face. Like, you know, there's there's things that you're good at and things that you can do. I can dance. You can really dance. Okay. I can DJ. Yeah, I mean I can really DJ. You can DJ. All right. That's yeah. All right. Yeah, you're not a DJ. You Global Music Collective: Yeah. He c yeah, he was amazing. Fair enough. kate: Yeah. Carl, could could you also could you also tell us a little bit about Ms. Corona for people who listening and don't know who she is? INVISIBLE: Yeah. So if you're not familiar with Miss Corona, Miss Corona is ⁓ she got popular being on she was an artist that was in the eight mile movie. So she had been rapping underground in the city of Detroit in these same battle rap circles as ⁓ and D twelve and King Gordy and all these like staples of the Detroit battle rap community. She was there and she ended up ⁓ like she held her own. amongst the the the guys in this whole thing and she was shredding most of them up. So when it came time to cast the eight mile movie, like all the homies are like if you need somebody to do it, they're Paula's your girl. Like that's she put her in this movie. So it was cool that she made it in the movie. ⁓ and she was in the lunch truck scene early on in the movie. So it's her, ⁓ and exhibit in the one of the early scenes in that eight mile movie. And it kind of launched her into ⁓ popularity. Like everybody knew who she was. And then when we did these tours, we're traveling around and she was the most popular person everywhere we went. Because when we went to India, the eight mile movie was kind of like the baseline of hip hop in most places in the country. Cause that movie blew up and it was a hip hop staple. Whereas for most of us, you know, wild style, breaking, beat street, the movies from the eighties were kind of like our hip hop baseline. So Yeah. kate: Huh, that's awesome. I actually didn't know the whole backstory with her. INVISIBLE: Miss Torona like, and she's super humble too, which was made it even cooler. So yeah. But anyway, so going back to the Invisibles, that was like my opportunity to just take some of my friends on the road. And we started trying to put some songs together. So when we were putting our set list together, it was like, and Richie, give us a couple songs, and Kari give us a couple songs, and Hans, you're gonna dance to a couple songs. So we kind of put together a slew of our own Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: Everybody threw something in the pot. And it worked out perfectly because we all started learning each other's songs. And then it was just like the Wu Tang clan. You know, you do a song, you do a song, you do a song, and we'll do some group stuff. And there was some group music put in there too. So it all ended up being really, really cool. But the song here, the ⁓ the Hello Indian Power was actually a DJ Invisible production that my you know my my friend brother from another mark swami mark played ⁓ a lot of the instrumentation on it and I shuffled the coconuts and our friend Mia Stallone said hello in every di every Indian dialect and we use that as the you know that's the that's the vocal it's hello you know so that was that was that song super cool super cool song had a blast doing it Global Music Collective: That's the core that's the hook. Yeah. kate: That's awesome. Global Music Collective: So dope. INVISIBLE: ⁓ Global Music Collective: Well 'cause they they asked too, they're like, ⁓ since you guys are a band, send us your tracks and we're like, ⁓ Yeah s INVISIBLE: Yeah. Yeah, we we sent the yeah. Yeah. kate: Richie, isn't our opening music one of the tracks that you were gonna use for that? Global Music Collective: ⁓ I had written a couple of beats for when we went to Ethiopia and one of ones we didn't use was was the one that we used there. Yeah. Yep, exactly. Still got it. ⁓ gone forever. kate: ⁓ it's Ethiopia, not India. Okay. That's now our that's now our podcast opener. INVISIBLE: Sweet. Yeah. Still doing it. Yeah, still got. ⁓ what is that? What has happened? That's on me. I have no idea what I did. All right. ⁓ fade the black button. I don't use that one very often. Yeah. Yeah, so the bottom right corner of the ⁓ yeah. So this next song was introduced to me by ⁓ a very famous ⁓ singer-songwriter who kate: He's gone invisible. Global Music Collective: That's the last button you push. See you later. Who is this? kate: Very famous. Very famous. INVISIBLE: When I met her, she was super humble and right, she was so humble. And it was almost like she didn't want to share her talents. She was like, ⁓ I'm not gonna ⁓ no, no. Cause actu Actually, you know what? I apologize. I I a hundred percent threw you on the spot because I did what every artist hates for someone to do to them. And it came to me later. So when we're in one of these big things, Richie, everybody's in the room, right? And I was like kate: So fucking humble. Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. INVISIBLE: And Kate's an opera singer, sing opera! kate: ⁓ God, yeah. Nope. INVISIBLE: And in hindsight, yeah. In hindsight, you know, jerk thing to do, cause that's like somebody walking up to you, hey Richie, rap. And you're like it what it's Global Music Collective: And you're like finishing your beer. kate: Because that's thing, like if you do it really well, then everyone thinks you're full of yourself, and if you do it really badly, then everyone's like, ⁓ well she's not that good and then you're in this position where you're like I can't be casual, I can't be formal, I'm just trapped. It's nothing I can do. It's fine. Global Music Collective: Eat the sandwich. INVISIBLE: Yeah, but I don't know. That was on me. That was my own social awkwardness of like me being like, I am in the room with real musicians, and someone has given me the microphone. What yeah, so that's on me. So, anyway, when when you gave me those songs and I had my turntable set up, I was trying to remix ⁓ that song. And I ended up falling in love with that song. That song is in my Spotify regular playlist and Global Music Collective: Do something. ⁓ kate: I forgot about that. Wait, you're not your sleepy playlist? Yeah, I thought so. ⁓ yeah. INVISIBLE: It well, that's this I only have one. It's the travel it's Carl's travel playlist. But that is ⁓ let's see, let me get back to it. That song is actually, it lives in my ⁓ where are we at? Where is it at? Here. It's right, and it's here's the playlist. Where is it? It's in here. There, there it is right there. kate: I like that he's proving it to us 'cause he knows I won't believe him. ⁓ there's a real thing, folks. He ain't lying. Look at me. I've made it big. I've made it big. You know actually Carl, do you see that that painting right there? That's that album art. Yeah. That's that's it. Yeah. You're in the presence of giants here. I think I still don't have Global Music Collective: Yeah blank. INVISIBLE: Yeah. ⁓ I did I That's the album cover. Yes. Yes. kate: You know, Spotify is really humbling because I'm pretty sure I still don't have over a thousand streams of that song. Pretty sure. And probably most of them are coming from you anyway. INVISIBLE: Let's see, can you tell? No, I can't tell on my ⁓ because it plays once or once or twice a day. So so anyway, I'm playing I'm playing around with Blink and I'm trying to mix it over different beats and trying to make some kind of remix of it or whatever. And then I was like, everything that I'm doing is messing this song up. So I know I I think I have one version of it where I just beefed up a bass line and made it a little bit more hip hoppy, but The regular version of it is in my normal rotation of my playlist. And the funny thing is, is the first couple of times that the kids would hear it, they'd be like, you know, ⁓ okay. And they didn't know it. But now when I'm in the car and it comes on, the kids have gone past the me explaining it to them. Like, yes, dad, we know that's your friend Kate. Okay. And then every now and then, Cree, Kree is my youngest. Kree will say, ⁓ dad, isn't this your friend Kate? And I'm like, Yeah. kate: Hear INVISIBLE: She and then she's just she's just baiting me. She's gaslighting me to s right. She's gaslighting me into Yes. It she's gaslighting me into explaining. And she's like, Yes, dad, we know. And I'm like, ⁓ okay. So you don't okay, cool. Right. So yeah. Yeah. So and the funny thing is I start singing it and I'm like, let me turn Kate up and me down because I don't, you know, I just blink when you Global Music Collective: do you know ⁓ She's dad baiting you. Yeah. kate: I you're Alaska? ⁓ That's really sweet. Carl, did I ever tell you the story about that song? It's a really fast story, but basically I was I wrote all you know, the music I write is all just not pop music. Not because I don't want to be pop. I just, I don't know, I I guess I'm not cool. But anyway, ⁓ a guy back when I was doing the songwriting thing more, I was playing at a bar called Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, which is like relatively well-known Hollywood music venue. And ⁓ there was a guy at one of my shows. INVISIBLE: Mm-mm. kate: And he came up to me after and he was like, I'm a talent scout for a new NBC TV show called Songland. And I was like, A talent scout? T Television? And and he was like, he was like, Yeah, I love your stuff. I'm gonna send it to the team. ⁓ I think Songland didn't even end up airing because there were all these issues with rights. They were like trying to take all the rights away from the artists or something. I don't know. But anyway, I got an email from him. Like I thought maybe he was full crap. I got an email from him a week or two later being like, We love your music. The whole team has listened. Like they've been passing it around the office. We love it so much, but it's a little bit, it's a little bit jazzy. It's a little cerebral. And I was like, okay. And he was like, could you write, could you write like a mainstream pop tune? And I was like, okay, I didn't know my music wasn't mainstream. Okay. So then I went back and I was trying to think of like, how would you write a mainstream pop tune? And I just took like, you know, the most basic pop. Global Music Collective: All right, thanks. kate: progression I could think of, you know, duh, duh. I think it's just one, four, five, one the whole time. And I was just trying to think of like, okay, what would be a silly, like obvious it's so it was about a breakup and about blinking. And anyway, it to me it was like not one of my better tunes, but hilariously they were like, this is exactly what we want. No, no, but that's the thing is that what I realized later was that like there's something really INVISIBLE: I'm so simple. kate: I we don't need to put this in, but you're not simple, Carl. The problem was that I make things too I you know, complex all the time. And Blink was just like a simple INVISIBLE: Mm-mm. The thing is, is the the the song writing in that song, it speaks to situations in everybody's life, which is very real and intangible. So, you know, blink, ⁓ you miss me, cause I'll be gone. I love that freaking song. Like, you know, and and the thing is like I I say it in my so kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: When I'm doing my little wacky bits here and there, or I'm performing and I'm looking out at somebody and I'm watching them actively hate me on stage because they are not interested in either what well, no, I'm like, soon as you blink, I you'll miss me because I'll be gone. It just it is a meme that is constantly playing in my head. And it just it makes me happy. I like I laugh about it all the time. So that song to me, that is like why the why are we still fading the? kate: It makes you think of me, right? Yeah, yeah. Ha ha ha ha! I'm very honored. You're gone. We blinked. He's gone. INVISIBLE: Right. We blinked and you now you'll miss me because I'm apparently gone. ⁓ and we've gone to Bali. Bali is still there, ladies and gentlemen. That is dope. Bali is still there. And I got I guess I don't get to be. This is what happens when you have too much crap. Now we're in the dark. Let's see if we can come back, ladies and gentlemen. And we're back. And we're back, ladies and gentlemen. You guys all blinked and you missed me because I was gone. Yes. Love that. So Global Music Collective: Fade black. Polly kate: ⁓ there's Bali. Global Music Collective: Wow. kate: No. Global Music Collective: Hey. kate: There we are. INVISIBLE: Moving along my ⁓ you know what? That's what happened. The other thing went to sleep. My stories were too long, and the computer was like, I'll be taking a nap now. So this song, Francis, by Evan Kennedy. ⁓ we were on tour with Snoop and name drop. So when I was on tour with Global Music Collective: It's great. It's like skip you then. kate: Awww. Global Music Collective: Okay. It's like kate: Ha ha ha Yeah, no, that's awesome. I mean, yeah. Global Music Collective: Who anybody I've heard of? INVISIBLE: Alright, I was on a tour with Snoop Dog D12, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, and the game. We just so happened to be hanging out with a ⁓ an Irish ⁓ group of lads who were the opening act on the tour, and their DJ at the time was this dude named Evan. Now, Evan was ⁓ he was just the DJ slash producer, super cool, laid back. ⁓ he was like a house music producer and ⁓ he made these up tempo beats for the rap group, which is defunct now. So they were ⁓ sponsored by what's the boxer's name? Irish boxer. ⁓ yeah, Colin McGregor. Yeah. So now is it Colin McGregor? McGregor's the last name, right? Yeah. So he was putting together this record label Connor McGregor. Global Music Collective: ⁓ Evan McGregor? Is that right? So Colin McGregor. kate: How do you know that? Why do you know that? Global Music Collective: Hang on. McGregor. Honor. INVISIBLE: He was putting together a record label who was putting these guys on. So Evan was the DJ and the producer for the group. And he was making these up tempo songs. And then one day he like we ended up in Ireland on a D12 tour. So we go to the studio and we're hanging out. And he plays me the song that sounds nothing like anything that he had been producing for this band. ⁓ and the song was beautiful, and it's just him singing. Now, if you guys heard me singing, you'd be like, okay, Carl, you should stick to what you're doing. But like hearing him actually just sing was amazing. And then he put together a small video, and I'm in the video on stage doing cutting and scratching. Like musically, I'm not a part of the song. I'm not in the song, but I made the video because I made an impact on him and what he felt as though a DJ stage show should be. kate: Yes. INVISIBLE: And the song has made it into my playlist because the song is freaking awesome. It's not hip hop. It's just a song that should have been more popular than it really was had someone believed in it and pushed it out there. So he's since moved on. He's moved ⁓ on to England and is just like behind the scenes, ⁓ producing and and still writing. But that it is a beautiful song. So if you get a chance to listen to it, it's just such it's so well put together. I love it. ⁓ kate: Yeah. That's amazing. INVISIBLE: And the last song on my list ⁓ is a song by a Detroit-based artist who might possibly ⁓ his name is Young PHX, and PHX is short for ⁓ Phoenix. His last name is yeah, I'm I'm a little bit familiar with him because I basically raised this kid in his musical journey. ⁓ and this particular song that he wrote. Global Music Collective: I know this one. Similar INVISIBLE: He was ⁓ 15 years old, going on 16, and he sat in his room and wrote an entire, you know, little little EP and was like, you know, I'm gonna put this EP out. ⁓ he wrote the song and and I loved it. It's a song, it's a young love song from a high school kid who had his first breakup. And in hearing it, it's like you get it. You're like, you know. Global Music Collective: Man. INVISIBLE: Do I still love? I don't know. I'm conflicted. Tenant of your own heart. I got evicted. And you're like, wow. And like, yeah. And like coming from a kid. This is like, this is awesome. So ⁓ he makes a song, like, love it. He made a couple other songs, but he was like, this is gonna be my single. And then he wanted to shoot a video, but the video was being shot coming out of like. kate: That's a good lyric. Yeah. INVISIBLE: the COVID time where you can just now start to go outside and you know, being on the street in the car is not like out of the question, still not a whole lot of people on the streets or whatever. But ⁓ you know, we got I got all the cameras together. I'm like, I got all the gear. Let's shoot a music video. ⁓ so we jump in the car and we have shots of him in the car and then he's standing on top of a house, ⁓ just just socially distant from other people. But we shot this awesome video and put this whole little project together. And over the next couple of years, the song became infectious to us. The tragedy behind this song is I put the song, I paid for the song to be on ⁓ all of the social media players. I paid for the song to be on all the social media platforms. And then I got a cease and desist letter from some company that was trying to sue me. For having the song out. They claimed rights to it. They claim rights to the song on YouTube. So I got a the message from YouTube like, ⁓ you have to take it down, or you're gonna be banned from YouTube. So come to find out, there was some company, and that was their, they were bottom feeders, they were going around to all the small record labels claiming their music on YouTube. kate: Yeah. Whoa. INVISIBLE: So you either had to pay them to leave it up, you had to pay them to leave it up or take it down. ⁓ so we had to call a senator and you know get the powers it be. But at that time, the song had five thousand views on YouTube, and I had to take it down or be banned, which means everything else that I had on my YouTube channel was gonna be crushed. So it lived on ⁓ Spotify. kate: Ugh. Global Music Collective: Yeah. INVISIBLE: For you know, it lives on lived on Spotify for some years. And then the ⁓ artist decided to take a ⁓ college scholarship to play lacrosse and changed his name from Young PHX to not the phenom, and he started acting and kind of put his music career on the on on hold. So ⁓ it's still on YouTube. ⁓ you can still find the video on YouTube, but the the song is no longer living on Spotify or streaming platforms. kate: Mm-hmm. ⁓ so he took it off? ⁓ Yeah. ⁓ that's too bad. INVISIBLE: And this ⁓ this rascal that I'm talking about is actually my son. So yeah, ⁓ goofball. So yeah, it is still like it is a family favorite song. You know, anytime we see him, we we torture him with the lyrics of the song. ⁓ because it's it's a fun song. It is a fun little breakup song. The video was my introduction into using a whole lot of the Global Music Collective: I was like I don't wanna give this away. But yeah kate: my goodness. ⁓ Global Music Collective: ⁓ kate: Yeah. Yeah. INVISIBLE: the camera angles and you know multi-camera shoot. So I made the video. I'm really proud of it. ⁓ you know. I don't know why my video keeps clipping, but yeah, so that was a family project that we put together. And so that one to me means a whole lot because of the fact that we had so much family buy-in and he's standing on the roof of our house at the time. And you know, it was just a it was a lot of fun. You know, he's acting, he's been in several little tubi movies. Global Music Collective: ⁓ wow. ⁓ huh. kate: Mm. INVISIBLE: ⁓ yeah. Yeah. So that's my little guy. Little Phoenix. kate: That's awesome. Two We movies. Global Music Collective: That's cool. That must be a a cool feeling too 'cause you've been in music for your life basically. And then to make a person and then he starts making music. I don't know, it's like kind of family business feeling. Must feel cool. INVISIBLE: Yeah. ⁓ my goodness. Yeah. It is so early on in his in his ⁓ musical journey, he was six years old and it was during the summer. I took him on tour with me. So he was I was on a tour with the American Cancer Soci I mean the American Cancer Society, and there was another several artists that were put together by ⁓ it was a guy who was working with the ⁓ American Cancer Society, brought a bunch of artists together and took us on the road supporting ⁓ anti-smoking initiative. So we're traveling around college campuses all over the country, and we needed, you know, being a young dad, Phoenix needed ⁓ daycare. So his daycare, excuse me, his daycare was get on the tour bus, here's your bunk, you know, you're now on the road. So he traveled with us for the summer, like two summers in a row. He was basically a roadie, and we figured out how to incorporate him into the show. So we gave him a junior fender strat. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Yep. Torquid. INVISIBLE: And would push him out on stage doing a Jimi Hendrix bit. So he had, you know, little kid with big hair and he's going out and he's acting like we're playing he's playing the guitar. I'm playing ⁓ you know, purple haze, and he's like, you know, he figured out, okay, when I do this, when the song is doing, you know, making the noise, he figured out the whole routine and then he's laying on his back. We showed him some Hendrix. So he's such a ham. So he was born into it. And like he was no longer afraid of big crowds by the age of six. Global Music Collective: Dude, ⁓ my gosh. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: So he just has always been comfortable on stage and in front of large groups of people. So him being a ham is totally organic now. Yeah. So ⁓ yeah. It's like I don't take myself seriously at all. He's yeah. He he didn't he didn't even fall from the tree. He's just yeah, we're just st still holding on. Yeah. kate: Well Global Music Collective: Amazing. Yeah, well you can see where he gets it from. I don't I don't think that apple fell far. kate: That's amazing. Global Music Collective: No, it's just old apples. That's amazing. Well, you've I think you've always been a a good dad as far as I could tell and ⁓ the way you support your kids and prop them up online and you know, with the people that you've toured with and the life that you've had as a musician, I I think that that's that's a cool thing. So yeah. kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: I don't get this. I've been I've been lucky to be in the right place at the right time and have just enough talent not to get kicked out of the room. Yes, enough. Holding on. ⁓ no. No. Global Music Collective: We'll keep you around. Well, he's selling himself short a little bit. You're a tremendously talented DJ and a great host and person to be around and good instructor and ⁓ yeah, good to travel with. So yeah. kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Thank you, thank you. I love this opportunity. So the opportunity to be that like our job is the biggest, coolest blessing. Like my mother reminds me, she tells me that you know, you told me as a little kid you wanted to play for a living. And that's kind of what we get a chance to do. We get a chance to play with our toys and use the tools that we have to play. And this is like the greatest gig ever. Like I don't want to just be a DJ anymore. I want to be a like an entertainer. You know, my boat gig is my Vegas show. I get a chance to write whatever nonsense into existence that I wanna do that day. You know, I'm dressing up like a pirate giving away fake gold bullion as a joke and kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: I saw that picture last night. I was like, Why is this why is he a pirate on this? kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Yeah. And and it was just that like Kate, you said, when you ex when you start explaining ⁓ singing opera, the way you explain it is it causes people to quiet down and listen to the different things that you're talking about. When you started explaining Greek mythology and it's it starts like I was a member of the junior classical society when I was in high school. I should know these things, right? So yeah. kate: ⁓ Global Music Collective: Ha ha. kate: I mean, I don't know, I could have been wrong. This might be edited out. INVISIBLE: No, I and I don't remember most of it because it's been years and years and years. But Miss Ayanku would be very frustrated that I don't remember anything other than how to say hello, which is ⁓ Solway and Salaway Megistra is hello teacher in Latin. Yeah. Yeah, totally dead. Yeah. That that's my flex for the entire show. Dropping a little Latin on these fools, what? Right. Yeah. Yeah. kate: Ha ha ha Ha. ⁓ that's cool. Look, I that's impressive. Global Music Collective: Dropping some Latin. Yeah. kate: Richie knows how to say Georgia and Georgian and you know how to say You know what, Carl, though that's like I actually I'm really curious, I mean we we we've obviously gotta wrap up soon, but I'm normally at the end we like to ask each other like what our kind of top three or top few songs for the week would be. And here's the thing. So we told you we wanted you to give us your songs, your top songs from your tours and your cultural stuff. ⁓ but now after all of this, I'm also like Global Music Collective: Mm-hmm. kate: I'm curious, you've got your boat gig, you've got your life as a as a DJ for all these famous artists, and we are sending Spotify playlists to the people who are listening. So we're gonna make ⁓ we're gonna make a YouTube playlist from everything that you've sent us. But I'm also curious, like what would you say what are you just listening to right now? Like what are like some songs that you've just been playing, you know? INVISIBLE: ⁓ my goodness. Yeah, and I've got a such a wacky so I'll go down to the last couple songs that I've added. There's a guy named ⁓ Bone. and he has a song called ⁓ excuse me, the name of the song is Bone, and it's by a singer named Monrovia. And yeah, I love that song. Like, I don't know if he's actually from Monrovia, but that is such a dope song. And that one is played often. kate: ⁓ yeah, that guy. He's great. INVISIBLE: And then because I think we've traveled and gone to some of these interesting places, I have found my algorithm has figured out that I like weird stuff. So last year I was on the lake and I had my just I'm I'm a the the kids have started to call me a bot. Like you are a bot. And I'm like, what does that mean? And they was kate: Yeah. He lives on a lake, ladies and gentlemen. He has a swan boat. It's ridiculous. INVISIBLE: NPC. Yeah, they were like, Dad, you're like an NPC. And I was like, I don't know what that means. You're I don't please explain. And then my daughter, while she's explaining it, she's Dad, you're like an NPC. I'm like, what does that mean? She's like, You're a non-playable character. You're like a cartoon character that just exists in real life. Like, I'm like, ⁓ And she started to explain. She was like, You have a giant swan boat. You were ridiculous. Like, I was like, Okay, I get it. I'm I'm I'm Global Music Collective: ⁓ my god. INVISIBLE: having fun. So anyway, long story short, the song is by VJ and Sophie Zlatako. And the song is world of colors. And it is just happy music. They made these happy songs. It's just And we can add it to the playlist and p you know if people can listen to it offline. ⁓ turnstyle is another band that I've really been, you know. I know they did some like crazy tiny desk that got them real popular where they like stage dived in a tiny desk thing. They have a song called Never Enough that's super dope. And there's a EDM artist called ⁓ named Fred Again. Fred Again, I have like his kate: Yeah. INVISIBLE: Catalog is crazy. Like, I've started like some of his music starting to become more popular. It started to make it into movies. But Fred again has some crazy, like just of different kinds of different tempos. They're just really a lot of fun. Yeah. So I'm all over, I'm a little all over the place. ⁓ this is easy. So Bad Bunny's performance. kate: That's awesome. Give give us a couple more. Give us a couple more. This is fun. Richie's Richie's at the red. INVISIBLE: Yeah, Bad Bunny's performance on ⁓ the Super Bowl. Loved it, loved it, loved it. And then some of the songs were so theatrically performed during the Super Bowl, I looked them up and was like, okay, now it's reminding me of it it makes more sense listening to the song and then seeing some of the backstories. So the song DTMF hit of Bad Bunny, love it, love it, love it. Global Music Collective: Yeah. kate: ⁓ Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ yeah, I love that. I had that on my list. I had that on my list before he did the Super Bowl and I was like, I know who he is. INVISIBLE: Yeah, so ⁓ the the D twelve song Tenderism with Method Man is on my list. I I love the song. Like meth kills it on that song. ⁓ I like there was a French Montana song that I liked until the Knicks won the super or the ⁓ the playoffs, and he like flipped it and added that nonsense to it. I'm like, all right, that song's getting ready to be off the list. ⁓ kate: I was hoping you'd give us one. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. kate: Yes. INVISIBLE: Geez, there's a song by his group called Goldfish Moonwalk Away. It's just another fun song. Like after my after having to play music, have having to play music that everyone else wants to hear. So when I go to a party and I'm curating the songs, I'm looking at the crowd and I'm trying to figure out what I can play to make them dance. So there are certain songs that I have burnt out that I on my off time when I'm off the clock and it's Carl. Carl doesn't want to hear certain songs anymore because I've played them too many times. So, like, ⁓ Deathcab for Cutie, Soul Meets Body. Love that song. Don't know why. Don't know why I love it. kate: Right. That is so funny to me. That's like the c I listened to that shit when I was pardon my language. I listened to that when I was in, I don't know, probably like high school or college and I was in kind of an emo phase. I can't believe that's one of your songs. You're talking about Method Man and T12, and then you go to Soul Meets Body. ⁓ my God. INVISIBLE: I totally right. And I just this there it is. Deathcat for cutie. ⁓ yeah, there's more Fred again, Fred again with other artists. ⁓ my gosh. So you might appreciate this one, or you might think that I'm just ridiculously corny. This is where I lose the kids. The one of my favorite, one of my favorite movies of all time is The Greatest Showman. So the Greatest Showman with Hugh Jackman. kate: That's why I'd appreciate it. INVISIBLE: The story behind it and like the song The Greatest Showman, the I was playing that before walking on stage. Like I'm in the dressing room and I'm looking at the clock, like you got five minutes to go on stage. What do you play to hype yourself up? I'm playing the greatest showman soundtrack because it's like ⁓ kate: My god. INVISIBLE: And I'm just envisioning myself being carried out to the stage now on elephants. Like I am getting ready to go tear it down. I have a top hat, like I am a hundred percent ready to rock now, having heard this song. So the greatest showman soundtrack. That song, the greatest showman. I I don't think Hugh Jackman has sung another song that I have liked, but that particular song, that one's got me, and then also. kate: That one. That's amaz we were just talking about that, Richie, weren't we? What was yours? You had a no, a hype up song. You also had a weird one. Global Music Collective: What, Hugh Jackman? ⁓ yeah. I haven't put it to the list yet, but it's called Jaguar by Whatso Not. It's this like I don't know if you've ever come across a car. It's a definitely a big like a big drop dance style song, but ⁓ well we you were not to categorize you too closely into what you are, but you don't really have like a big jumping around music. Yeah, I think your music is well you're INVISIBLE: There. my gosh. kate: Guys, I don't have a hype up song. I've I don't have a hype up song. That's not fair. That's not true. ⁓ you mean my my personal music? ⁓ yes. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not like, let's get ready to I thought you meant me as a person. And I was like. Actually, I do have a hype up song then. When I have to sing opera, I'm sorry, I'm interrupting to say this. When I have to perform opera, there is an aria called Juliet's Waltz that starts out going. Global Music Collective: Personal yeah. Kate Bass goes on stage, she's not like let's go it's INVISIBLE: Let's get ready to sing! Global Music Collective: Yeah It's the piano tuned Yeah INVISIBLE: ⁓ my god, that would be so awesome. Everyone would be so freaked out. kate: That's how it starts. And when I was in I know, I just dropped it. When I was in college, I couldn't sing high notes and I couldn't I would go For years. And so in s like most singers will do, like like classical singers would do warm-ups, you know, like don't like before they go on the stage. But for me, this is a true story. Before any performance where I have to sing opera, I sing through that fucking aria three times, every single time, just to make sure I can hit those notes. Cause if I can hit those notes, I can sing anything. So there's my hype up song. INVISIBLE: Richie, I'm gonna Richie, I'm gonna start using the word Aria now because I now feel as though it can be a flex because people are gonna be like, so what do you do to get hyped up for a song? And instead of me telling them I sing ⁓ the ⁓ the song to Annie, the which I actually do. I'm gonna say, No, actually the song, I can't pronounce the young lady's name, but it's Cavenzane Wallace. The the new Annie, the new Global Music Collective: Okay. kate: Really? It's a hard knock life? INVISIBLE: The Jamie Foxx Annie. Okay, she has a song called Opportunity. That is my second hype up song. So if I'm not in the mood to stage dive, I sing Under the glow of the very bright lights. my gosh, this song is so chill. And the kids look at me like they know the words to the song. They're like, Dad, why are you saying this? Global Music Collective: ⁓ kate: ⁓ then you any yeah yeah yeah yeah. That's your hype up Aria. Yes. Perfect. INVISIBLE: I played it before we went on stage at one of the D12 saw shows, and they all looked at me like, we're second guessing this. ⁓ you know, thank God we've seen you. Thank goodness we've seen you actually, DJ, because this is how you're getting hyped to go on stage. And it's the the the writing of the song and her cadence is like so spot on. Like you're getting ready to go out on stage. It's like ⁓ before Global Music Collective: ⁓ yeah. What was that other guy's name? kate: Ha ha ha. INVISIBLE: Two hundred smile. That's like five. It it's just I don't, you know, like I don't know what the the licensing situation is, but you know, it is just a great song. We'll have to cut this out. kate: Yeah, yeah. It curl? INVISIBLE: I'm not afraid of a thousand eyes. And they're about It smiles. Global Music Collective: Wow. kate: Wait, wait, Carl, do you really listen to this before you go out for like stadium shows with these big hip hop like legends? Is that true? Is that a true story? That's actually like a really powerful thing to know. I love that. INVISIBLE: Yeah. Yeah, that is yeah. Global Music Collective: This was yeah. INVISIBLE: that or I am possibly getting the award for Ladies and gentlemen, in receiving the corniest award ever. Ladies and gentlemen, this Grammy is to DJ Invisible for being the biggest corn ball ever. And we've made a category. That or this bottle of tequila is for Carl. kate: You had to go there, dude. Global Music Collective: We've made a category, just No, that's I think that's part of the reason why we were hoping you would come on. Kid I kate: Man, we have made a category. INVISIBLE: Yeah, so that song, it like it hypes me up because every show you can ⁓ I like I try and switch it up a little bit, but every show I am not like rah-rah. Every show is, you know, is somewhere different. And I started listening to that before going on some of the Snoop shows. Cause some of them, you know, there's so much chaos going on. You know, I've heard other people talk about centering themselves. And I never knew how until I thought of s you know, I'm listening to certain songs and I'm like, this Global Music Collective: Amazing. Yep. INVISIBLE: This is it's relaxing before I go out to the chaos. Like it's been chaotic backstage. I need to take a breath and get it together. And there's thousands of people out there. And the fact that it says, you know, you know, a thousand eyes and then five hundred smiles. I'm like, ⁓ it's math. Everybody's got two eyes and there's only five. So now I'm like really smart because I was able to figure that out. Yeah, look at me. I'm a mathematician. And yeah. kate: Ha ha. Global Music Collective: Most F mathematics here. Yeah. Yep. kate: Bringing it back, Richie. Good job. INVISIBLE: So it is a it it's just a it's a cool, fun song. Yeah. Global Music Collective: Hey look man, that's I feel like the what's that? The big ⁓ song, Stan, came from Dido, which is probably not the world's like biggest song ever. It's not a pump up song. Not in like not for I mean, I'm not saying that Annie is not a successful film, but it's not something that you would think of as the like the big pump up song. So yeah. INVISIBLE: Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah, and the fact that she did. It was crazy. kate: That was a very successful song, Dido Song. INVISIBLE: No. Well the fact that Dido doesn't want to perform that song anymore, like, bruh, bruh. This is how people know you now, bruh. Come on. So kate: The connector, yeah. Global Music Collective: I didn't realize that. kate: It's also just I think it's so cool because it shows I d I don't know, it just shows that like it doesn't matter what what kind of person, what kind of music, what kind of environment, we all like variation and it's I I don't ⁓ it just goes back to this whole AI algorithm thing, like we need variation. You can you would never guess, never in a million years would an AI bot guess that the DJ for Snoop Dogg would be listening to that song before you go on stage. INVISIBLE: Right. You can't Yeah. ⁓ Mm-mm. Mm. No, and there's a couple of songs like that that that are super like from the greatest showman soundtrack, the the Never Enough song. Like that's just when she was on stage that and it was this part, so is another one you have to cut. kate: You know, it's amazing. ⁓ my god, I just had to sing that in India. That was a nightmare. Global Music Collective: ⁓ did you really? INVISIBLE: When she talk when she starts singing and she's like has to take that breath, like I take that breath trying to w right before trying to The fact that they put the breath in the song to me was like that's some good producing right there. That's some good stuff. Cause you know, when you're getting ready to go on stage, you have to take a breath before you know, before it happens. You know, you gotta get ready. So there's a couple of really corny songs that like you said, the algorithm you could bet money that the algorithm was not gonna think that we now my algorithm is like you're a moron. We can throw any we can throw anything at this guy and he's gonna love it, but Global Music Collective: Ha ha ha. It's like, What is this? Yeah, just send him whatever. kate: Yeah, you're getting it. ⁓ But it's cool, like humans are so complicated. We're so ⁓ we're so surprising. We're not what people think we are just based on how we look. You know, like I listen to all kinds of music that a lot of people wouldn't think an opera singing white girl with blonde hair listened to and you know, Rich I no one would ever think talking to Richie, especially when he's hanging out with with you and with all the like INVISIBLE: Yeah, there are certain Right. Yeah. Yeah. kate: the people in the hip hop world, you would never think that you come Richie from a background of ⁓ like touring singing stadiums with an a cappella group. Like that for me was a really big surprise when I met you. And ⁓ we all have our preconceived notions, you know, like I thought Carl was gonna be so cool he wouldn't want to have the first thing to do with me. Not that he like rode a swan boat and like, you know, was fascinated about my opera shit. Like it's ⁓ sorry, my opera stuff. So I don't know. ⁓ it's really cool. INVISIBLE: Here have to add one of the ⁓ the constant sensor buttons in for yeah. Kate Kate. Not at all. I'm you know, the the hip hop guy's supposed to be one dropping all the bad words. This is unacceptable. You're taking my steam, Kate. Right, that is true. ⁓ sorry. Like the lowest, the the latest sensor ever. All the profanity's been thrown. Mother son of bleep it got in my drug. Global Music Collective: ⁓ yeah. kate: Yeah, for Kate and her sailor mouth. Yet again, not what you would expect. Yeah, yeah, you're you're the one playing greatest showman. Ha Global Music Collective: ⁓ there's the beep. For for swearing. INVISIBLE: Freaking fucking it and then the sensor's like Oops. Mm. kate: Ha ha Global Music Collective: We're removing all of this. Well, I I think we should probably wrap it up because we're gonna have to edit this down. Yeah. Global Music Collective: How to break the algorithm, just like DJ Invisible had. Obviously, Spotify has no idea what to send him anymore. And and that's what we want. We want we want ⁓ everything to ⁓ you know, music has been such a benefit to our lives and our travels and meeting these amazing people, and we want to share that with the rest of the world and and maybe if we get this chance kind of prop up some of the amazing artists that will never be on Spotify or never hit your algorithm and maybe you kate: What to do with him? Yeah. Global Music Collective: as well can find your pump up song next time you're going on stage. So thank you very much to DJ Invisible for joining us on Entry Points Radio. Now thank you guys for having me. This was fun. This was something I was looking forward to when you when you threw it my way. I was so excited about it. Not just to catch up with you guys, but to talk about music. Like with two people that musically are like so well versed in everything. Richie, you are just always the most talented person in the room. And if somebody says, ⁓ Kate, we have to hurry up and make ⁓ a a poker song. With a hip hop four on the floor, house beat, and we need it done in 20 minutes. Richie's got a laptop in his back pocket. Like, I don't know how you figured out how to get a laptop into your back pocket, but he pulls it open, right? Big ass cargo fence. So, like it has always been amazing how quickly and well you make beats. And Kate, I'm telling you, being someone who listens to all kinds of music, I am still enamored. kate: Richer, yeah. Yeah. Global Music Collective: It's cargo pants. Yeah, it's cargo pants. kate: Yeah. Global Music Collective: Thanks, man. INVISIBLE: with the things that you can do with your voice. That is friggin' awesome. So I you know, it's always kinda fun to hang out with you guys. And you guys are a part of the most secretive committee club ever. The the high right. Yeah. Like the right. They don't even know. Nobody even knows. Yeah. Nothing on us. We go this way, we go that way. Yeah, yeah. INVISIBLE: Yeah, people don't even know. Longitude and latitude have nothing on us. Nothing. Right. We will be in two hemispheres in the same day. The weirdest flexes ever. Like we've been in two hemispheres the same day, have you? Everybody there is like literally, that's kind of what we we we live here. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Right. It's just yeah. Global Music Collective: Ha ha. Pri Meridian. Yeah.
