- 1:14Who are the greatest aunt and uncle of all time?
- 1:16We're gonna be asking this question and a lot more in today's episode of Cismak Ecology.
- 1:20We are the priests of the geeks.
- 1:20I'm your host, Christian Ashley, as we continue on In Our Faces Behind Us series talking about Aunt May and Uncle Ben for the greatest character of all time, Spider Man.
- 1:27It's not just me here today, though.
- 1:29I have, of course, the wonderful Jill Elizabeth.
- 1:31How's it going, Jill?
- 1:32I am fantastic.
- 1:33Always happy to be talking Peter Parker.
- 1:35Excellent.
- 1:36So, Jill, what have you been geeking out on recently?
- 1:39Ooh.
- 1:40So I just finished read for, like, maybe the third time.
- 1:45James Baldwin's the Fire.
- 1:49I did.
- 1:49I loved it.
- 1:50The Fire.
- 1:50Something.
- 1:51Okay.
- 1:51It's a book of essays.
- 1:53It's three essays.
- 1:53It's super short, and it is fantastic.
- 1:57And in the visual world, I am geeking out on east of Eden on Netflix, which was one of my favorite books of all time.
- 2:07Very nice.
- 2:08I didn't know that was releasing right now.
- 2:10I knew it was in production at some point, but.
- 2:11Okay, good to know.
- 2:13Yes.
- 2:13So it's like a miniseries.
- 2:15I'm not sure how many episodes there will be.
- 2:17I just got through two.
- 2:18Good.
- 2:20I just finished Lanterns, and I ultimately am very positive on it.
- 2:26Unfortunately, I won't be on the episode for what's news because that's actually being recorded right now as we're recording this.
- 2:32So not to place it in time or anything.
- 2:35Thanks for picking me instead.
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:38Hey, we got to talk about the most important character of all time.
- 2:40You know, Green Lanterns are fine, but, you know, it's not Spider Man.
- 2:46Ultimately, I enjoyed it.
- 2:48I have issues with some changes made, but I can deal with it.
- 2:51And I'm not happy about waiting three or four years for the next season because modern television.
- 2:56Yeah.
- 2:56On that downer note, let's get into this one.
- 2:58Once again, we're discussing today faces behind a series.
- 3:01We're not really picking, like, all the time, the main character of the story.
- 3:05We've done it before, but, like, it's been like, okay, who is, you know, Master Chief?
- 3:09Who is, you know, Eragon?
- 3:11All these things.
- 3:12But today we're doing Peter Parker's aunt and uncle, Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
- 3:16Andy and I.
- 3:17I believe that one will come up before this.
- 3:19Have done an episode on Richard and Mary Parker for Spider Man.
- 3:23There.
- 3:23Now we're doing Aunt May, Uncle Ben.
- 3:25So, Jill, there's a weird person out there.
- 3:27They have, for some reason, clicked on an episode about Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
- 3:32But they don't know who Spider man is.
- 3:34Can you help me explain who Spider man is?
- 3:37Oh, okay.
- 3:38Well, the Spider man we're talking about today is Peter Parker.
- 3:42Peter Parker, born in Queens, New York.
- 3:46Our friendly neighborhood Spider Man.
- 3:49He is a.
- 3:50An awkward teen being raised by his aunt and uncle.
- 3:54His parents are deceased.
- 3:57He, depending on what story you're coming in on, somehow gets spider powers.
- 4:03He's bitten by a radioactive spider and wakes up with these abilities to do amazing things and doesn't quite know what to do with that.
- 4:11He's also a teenager, so he's.
- 4:13His body is changing because of hormones and all of that anyway, so it's like all of this awkwardness all happening at one time.
- 4:20And his Uncle Ben, who is like the wise father figure in his life.
- 4:25His life is tragically taken.
- 4:27And now Peter Parker is left with just himself, his Aunt May.
- 4:33He has to figure out how to be a teen, go to school, make enough money to help out at home.
- 4:39He has typical high school teenage problems like bullies and girls that he likes and doesn't know how to talk to.
- 4:47He also has a secret identity and this responsibility to protect his neighborhood from all of the villains.
- 4:52So he is both peaceful Peter Parker high school student and Spider man vigilante.
- 4:57Well said.
- 4:58Yeah, we are talking, of course, as I said many times before, the greatest superhero of all time, one of the most relatable ever made.
- 5:05And the fact that this is not what would have been a typical superhero at the time.
- 5:09One of Stan Lee's things he was making behind the scenes was Ditko was like, I don't want to make another Superman or Reed Richards or something like that.
- 5:16I want to make someone that the younger crowd who really are into our comics can get because he's just like them.
- 5:21But.
- 5:21But normally that's reserved for a sidekick to have someone their age.
- 5:24You would have a Robin or a Bucky.
- 5:27And he didn't want to do that again.
- 5:28So he made him on his own, became his own man, as it were.
- 5:32Through this, through making the wrong choice, being selfish, and then learning the lesson of with great power, there must always come great responsibility.
- 5:40And that has endured since 62.
- 5:43An Amazing Fantasy 15 came out and I have been.
- 5:47Now, let's talk about our history with the character.
- 5:49I mentioned it several times before.
- 5:50Once again, everyone in this episode is their first episode.
- 5:55I grew up with Spider Man.
- 5:56He's been my guy ever since the Animated Series came out in the 90s.
- 6:00My dad and I would watch it religiously together and Talk about.
- 6:03He'd talk about stuff that would happen in the comics.
- 6:05And as I got older and wouldn't rip pages, I could actually read the comics and did Amazing Spider Man, Marvel team up, and so on, so forth, into my journey into Marvel, then to dc.
- 6:18And he's just been a fixture of my life ever since then.
- 6:20How about you, Jill?
- 6:21Yeah, I love that.
- 6:23I grew up with the Spider man movies, I think animated series, like, maybe in the background.
- 6:28I wasn't super into it.
- 6:30Yeah.
- 6:31Was my favorite Marvel character forever and ever.
- 6:34And then I had children, and my son Jack was learning how to read, and he learned how to read by these, like, little beginner comic books.
- 6:44And Spider man was his favorite, so it became my favorite.
- 6:47And I have been immersed in the comic book world, the mcu, really, anything we can get our hands on that Spider man, my son and I just love it.
- 6:56And that is, like, one of the things that connects us, our love of comics in general.
- 7:00But Spider man specifically.
- 7:02Yeah, that's one of those great things, you know, passing father, son, mother, son, our love for these characters.
- 7:08And yet then they'll have their own journeys, and they'll eventually make children later on that they can pass it on to other people.
- 7:14It's like, oh, man.
- 7:15Because there's people that's been doing this since 62.
- 7:18Exactly.
- 7:18Yeah.
- 7:19And I just, like, have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Stan Lee, and I think this is the character that he created that's most like him and also why I love it.
- 7:30All right, so our topic of discussion isn't Spider man proper, even though we're talking about everything around the mythos.
- 7:36And those, of course, are two of the linchpins of Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
- 7:39Who are they?
- 7:40Why do they matter?
- 7:42Well, he doesn't have parents.
- 7:43In most of the telling of Spider man, he is orphaned and being raised by aunt and uncle, and so they are the mother and father figure.
- 7:52That's, like, how he gets to be who he is.
- 7:56And, you know, Ben is there and serves.
- 7:59Mostly his absence plays a bigger role than actually the character Ben, but he, like, serves as the wisdom and the guiding light and the morality compass for Peter Parker.
- 8:13Aunt May gets a little bit more of the, like, practical caretaking and giving of real life.
- 8:20Like parental.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:22You know, day to day.
- 8:24Yeah, it's one of those things that the trope is called nephewism of where, you know, how can we make things more tragic for our main character?
- 8:32Well, his parents are dead, but he's still raised by people who are related to him.
- 8:35It's the Luke Skywalker of it all in Peter Parker here.
- 8:39And it's like, yeah, it's this tragedy.
- 8:41But also he was raised by people who loved him as well adjusted as possible given the circumstances.
- 8:47And Ben and May are those people that they couldn't have children of their own outside of recent revelations.
- 8:53But that's another thing.
- 8:56Comics.
- 8:57Comics, yeah.
- 8:58Where they take in their nephew.
- 9:00Ben has lost his brother.
- 9:02May had a nice relationship with her sister in law and now they're gone, Their son has left.
- 9:06What do they do?
- 9:08They don't know how to raise a child.
- 9:09And yet now they're going to have to learn as fast and swiftly as possible.
- 9:14And there are hiccups along the way, but ultimately they do the best they can and raise Peter Parker into a man who is into his studies, respectful of other people.
- 9:25At the same time, there are aspects of Peter that are bitter because of losing his parents and because of the loss of Uncle Ben and knowing he's responsible for that, that lead him into being at the very start
- 9:35of his career a huge jerk to a lot of people he talks to.
- 9:38But we know why.
- 9:39And it's their influence, you know, Ben from beyond a grave, but also aunt May in his life that actually help him realize, okay, I can't keep acting like this.
- 9:47I gotta be better man than this.
- 9:49And when written well, he will eventually tell aunt May who he is.
- 9:52But you know, once again, comics, we can't have anyone.
- 9:55Progress.
- 9:58Takes a very long time.
- 10:00Yes.
- 10:01So imagine a world.
- 10:03Jill, Aunt May, Uncle Ben also dead.
- 10:06How does our story progress for Peter Parker?
- 10:09Oh, gosh.
- 10:11So in theme with our.
- 10:14Well, in line with our theme of the faces behind us, I think May and Ben are so much more than the faces behind Peter Parker.
- 10:23Like without them there is no Spider Man.
- 10:26I think we just have an orphaned, bitter kid maybe bouncing around between foster homes.
- 10:33I guess it depends on what decade you put the story.
- 10:35But no, we do.
- 10:37We do not get a responsible, friendly neighborhood Spider man who's there to help out his community and uplift.
- 10:45Yeah, I'm 100% with you.
- 10:46It's one of those things like without them as being the Lynch Finch behind him, helping him mold him into the man he eventually becomes.
- 10:53We don't have the Peter Parker we get.
- 10:55You know, even with their influence, he still had jerkish instincts that he has learned to curb over time.
- 11:01But without them, like he's lost his mother and father and now he's lost his aunt and uncle.
- 11:06There are other relatives Way out there in the Parker family, but probably would never have been the people to raise him as their own.
- 11:13So I definitely would have.
- 11:14I agree with you.
- 11:15You probably would have been part of the foster system.
- 11:17And that is a great institution that is sometimes filled with people who aren't in it for the right reasons.
- 11:22So maybe he finds a good family, maybe he doesn't.
- 11:25But even if he found a good family, once again, with his own flesh and blood, he acts like this.
- 11:29So imagine what he would have been even in a good family that had no blood tied to him.
- 11:36He would just.
- 11:37That whole aspect of responsibility gone.
- 11:41And if it was still because Uncle Ben died, but he didn't have like Aunt May to take solace and be the safe space landing spot for him.
- 11:50Yeah, I'm kind of half cheating with this one.
- 11:53If you've ever read the comic series Bullet Points, it's a what if of what if.
- 12:00Ben Parker died trying to protect Erskine from the Nazi who was trying to kill him for using his super soldier serum.
- 12:08And as a result of that, a lot of things spiral.
- 12:11Because Peter Parker, Captain America, doesn't become the man he is.
- 12:14There's more like Iron man stuff attached to him in that way.
- 12:17The Hulk doesn't become the Hulk.
- 12:19Peter becomes the Hulk because even with the influence of Aunt May, he's bitter.
- 12:25He's already lost his parents, then he lost Uncle Ben, and he becomes basically Rick Jones of this timeline.
- 12:30And he's the one who's on the gamma, the base where the gamma bomb goes off and ends up becoming the Hulk.
- 12:36I think that probably would have been what would happen is that he would have rejected everything going on, left everything behind, become a drifter, and there would have been no responsibility.
- 12:44Yep.
- 12:45Man, you geeks are always giving me something new.
- 12:50Now I got to go look up bullet points.
- 12:52Yeah, I almost said ruins earlier.
- 12:55That's the wrong one.
- 12:56That's the edgy one where the spider bite does what it would do in the real world.
- 13:00And that's supposed to be the edgy part of it.
- 13:02It's like, oh, our heroes aren't heroes because blah, blah, blah, it's awful.
- 13:06We won't go there.
- 13:07Ellis and his anti superhero agenda stuff, if I'm remembering correctly, who wrote it.
- 13:12But yeah, I think Peter Parker without Ant Man, Uncle Ben is not the man we know as Spider man because he doesn't have that support system.
- 13:19He doesn't have people who believe in him the same way.
- 13:21Once again, even if he found a good place to be in it's still not the same.
- 13:26And Mike, listen, I'm not a fan of using guilt and shame.
- 13:30I don't think they're actually good tools for parenting or for life.
- 13:36However, sometimes they can be effective.
- 13:37And I think his guilt over his part in Ben's death does act as a catalyst for him being.
- 13:45Becoming a great man.
- 13:47Yes.
- 13:47Without that, I'm not sure what we.
- 13:49Get as a huge part of it.
- 13:51That's like to this day, he is defined by that guilt and shame of I had the opportunity to do the right thing, but I didn't because I was focusing on me.
- 13:59And as a result of me being selfish, someone was taken away from me.
- 14:03So never again for anyone else.
- 14:05Which you know, has a huge psych, psychiatric risks to a person.
- 14:10But he wouldn't be who he was, who he is without that.
- 14:13Yeah.
- 15:15So one of the other questions we always ask in these, Jill, is would we rather be the mentor or the influencer in this series?
- 15:21And like we did last time with Andy, there's an obvious answer, but I want to hear what you have to say.
- 15:28Gosh, this is good.
- 15:30No, I'm like a behind the scenes.
- 15:32I would rather be a mentor.
- 15:34Yeah.
- 15:34I feel like actually I'd be a really good Aunt May.
- 15:40I'm thinking more like modern Aunt May.
- 15:43Like, I want to be a pretty aunt, not I'm not old and frail.
- 15:46And sick, 90 seconds away from the grave.
- 15:51And clueless.
- 15:53So, like in the beginning, those early comics, like, she's kind of an idiot.
- 15:59She's clueless.
- 16:01And how have you not figured this out?
- 16:03And why do you think Spider Man's so horrible?
- 16:06That Aunt May was not my favorite.
- 16:08I like more modern tellings of her.
- 16:12But yeah, I'd rather be the mentor here in this situation.
- 16:14What about you?
- 16:16I mean, the last one was, would I rather be a super cool spy and die in a plane crash or be the greatest superhero of all time?
- 16:24Well, the spy part's cool, but the coolest superhero of all time.
- 16:28My answer is to be Spider Man.
- 16:29As rough as I know that would be and everything there.
- 16:32But still, though, there is something to be said about being that strong parental figure to someone who is, yeah, they're related to you, but they're not your child.
- 16:42So what do you do in that instance?
- 16:43Well, you love them, you give them the affection you can.
- 16:46You watch after them as best you can.
- 16:48You make mistakes and you own up to the mistakes you make along the way.
- 16:51And then like, hey, I'm doing my best to make you into the best person I can mold you into being, but while also letting you choose who you are like that there's a huge responsibility as a parent.
- 17:02You know, you have two, three children.
- 17:05Three.
- 17:06Three.
- 17:06That's right.
- 17:07Okay, three.
- 17:08Every last one of them, he's been like, well, good luck.
- 17:11Like, no, no.
- 17:11You.
- 17:11You took the time and care into looking after them to help bring them into who they're becoming.
- 17:17Yes.
- 17:18And with all of the Spider man stories, we enter his journey as he's a teenager.
- 17:25That's a really important stage in a kid's life to have a mentor that matters.
- 17:32Absolutely.
- 17:33I mean, I wouldn't be where I am without the.
- 17:35The men and women I had in my life molding me at that point in time.
- 17:38Same.
- 17:39And mostly the ones who weren't related to me.
- 17:41You know, teachers, coaches, parents of my friends.
- 17:45Like, those are the people that made the most difference in my life.
- 17:48Yeah.
- 17:48The people who actually cared enough to ask what's going on.
- 17:50And even though if you.
- 17:51Typical teenager.
- 17:52Not the most, you know, open about certain things or even if you were like, it's nice to have people who care about you and want to see you succeed, even if once again.
- 18:00Yeah.
- 18:01Not flesh and blood.
- 18:02Or you're just a friend of my kid.
- 18:03Like, some people say you're just that.
- 18:05But no, no, you're a friend of my kid.
- 18:07Like, let me do the same thing I'm doing with my child to you and help you grow.
- 18:11Like, that's an immense responsibility.
- 18:13Yep.
- 18:14Absolutely.
- 18:14And then we get to see, like.
- 18:16Well, are we just sticking to, like, comic book or.
- 18:19We can do what all of Spider Man.
- 18:21Okay.
- 18:22So I really love.
- 18:23Even in May's.
- 18:26So Tom Holland's Spider man and the latest movie, May is already gone.
- 18:32But her influence on Peter Parker and then what ends up being her influence on Jean Grey is so powerful that Peter's able to share.
- 18:43You've had so many months to see the movie.
- 18:46I know.
- 18:46I don't care.
- 18:47I know other people do.
- 18:50Okay.
- 18:51Spoiler.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:53That.
- 18:54Because Peter's able to share, like, this love and affection and unwavering support that May was able to show him, he's able to give Jean Grey a glance into that.
- 19:05It changed.
- 19:06Changes her trajectory in that movie.
- 19:07And then what I'm sure we will see in, like, the new X Men.
- 19:10It's beautiful.
- 19:11I really enjoyed that scene.
- 19:14To have her show up in the film, you could be.
- 19:16Oh, it's just nostalgia.
- 19:17No, no, no.
- 19:18Like, it is proof positive of who she was helping to shape him and who he is that even beyond the grave, much like Uncle Ben, with great power, great responsibility.
- 19:28Which, by the way, he didn't actually say in the Original Amazing Fantasy 15.
- 19:31It was the narration.
- 19:32I was gonna say that.
- 19:33Yeah.
- 19:33Okay.
- 19:34Yeah.
- 19:35It only really became a thing in the Spider Man.
- 19:37Wolverine, one shot in the 80s, but still, the point you made is great.
- 19:43Her words, her influence.
- 19:45Jean doesn't know who she is.
- 19:46She knows who Peter is kind of from interacting with him.
- 19:48But she's got that instinct of, oh, everyone's got an edge or something else they want to do.
- 19:55They've always got something that makes them not good.
- 19:58Sorry.
- 19:58But Peter Parker is who he is because of Aunt May being the woman she was.
- 20:03And that helps inspire Jean to actually be better than who she thinks she could be and to believe in other people again.
- 20:08Which was great for setting up the X Men movie.
- 20:10I totally agree with that.
- 20:12Yeah.
- 20:12That encounter with goodness matters.
- 20:15Yes.
- 20:16Well said.
- 20:17All right, you ready to get into the.
- 20:19The mentors, teachers, etc.
- 20:21Let's do it.
- 20:22You.
- 20:22Like I said off camera, you really had some deep dives here.
- 20:27I had to do some research to remember who all these people were.
- 20:31One of them is a joke answer.
- 20:32We'll get there when we get there.
- 20:35But, yeah, I did my work.
- 20:37I've read all these things for however many years, so some of them I had to refresh my memory.
- 20:41Who is this person?
- 20:42Okay.
- 20:43But if you don't know who these people are, you're in good company.
- 20:45It's okay.
- 20:46We're here to teach, right?
- 20:47Here to learn.
- 20:49So the easiest ones we have Richard and Mary Parker.
- 20:52What do you have to say about his parents that I.
- 20:55I'm going to have to say things I didn't say on the other episode, maybe.
- 20:57Who knows?
- 20:58Oh, I don't really know much about them.
- 21:01I mean, there's a couple of, like, episodes from Animated series where I remember them talking about his parents, but.
- 21:11But I don't have much here.
- 21:12I will defer to you on Richard and Mary.
- 21:15And that's actually something I should have said on the last one because I mentioned at the beginning, but I didn't mention it in the core conversation.
- 21:21The Animated Series does kind of do the same thing that Amazing Spider Man Annual 5 does in introducing them, but instead of Wolverine, we get Captain America and whatever they call them in that one, Soldiers of Victory or
- 21:32something like that.
- 21:34And it's really cool because for a kid's program, you're talking about really deep themes.
- 21:38You learn Parents are dead in a show that really didn't like to say the word die because children can't possibly handle that.
- 21:45Sure.
- 21:46Yeah.
- 21:47He couldn't even throw a punch because of the rules they had in place.
- 21:51So he just kept throwing people around.
- 21:53Which is really funny in hindsight, but yeah, we get to see, like, they were these super cool spies.
- 21:58They're working with the CIA or shield, depending on who's writing the story in the show, their shield.
- 22:04But as a cost of serving their country, they die.
- 22:07They're also branded as traitors because it's convenient for the powers that be at that point in time to do so.
- 22:14And in the annual and in the show Spider man, Peter Parker finds out about that.
- 22:18And he's like, no, there's no way my parents were traitors.
- 22:21Like, working against America.
- 22:24So he goes off, figures out what's going on, Ends up fighting the communist Red Skull who had been the one who killed them.
- 22:30Separate character from the regular main Red Skull and gets to exonerate them through the proof that he finds through that.
- 22:38Okay, I did not remember that.
- 22:41Yeah.
- 22:42Okay.
- 22:42Love it.
- 22:43It's really fun.
- 22:44It's one thing that people don't like, and I mentioned this on the other episode, so I'm interested in your idea.
- 22:49What you think about this is they think it makes him too comic booky and that not only is he a superhero, but his parents were these also super awesome spies.
- 22:59They think it makes the world a little too narrow.
- 23:01Like, what's your thought on that?
- 23:03I disagree.
- 23:04First of all, no such thing as too comic booky.
- 23:07I love that stuff.
- 23:10So, no, I disagree.
- 23:11I think it just adds another layer of interest.
- 23:14Right.
- 23:15This is the thing about our greatest superhero ever.
- 23:18There are so many versions of him and so many different avenues to go down.
- 23:23Like the whole multiverse.
- 23:25I feel like he's the linchpin of the multiverse.
- 23:28And I love discovering all the different spider mans and different backstories.
- 23:32Yeah.
- 23:33And they release a spider verse every other year.
- 23:35Like, it's kind of hard not to find a new one.
- 23:39It gets very confusing.
- 23:40But I don't mind.
- 23:41And I'm always the first one to be like, I have no idea what's happening here.
- 23:45I don't know what timeline this is.
- 23:47I'll just enjoy the moment for what it is now.
- 23:50If only they could release the spider verse movie that we've been waiting so long for.
- 23:54But that's another issue.
- 23:55I was just going to say, it's so off.
- 23:58I had a dream that there was a live action Miles Morales movie.
- 24:03Like in my dream, the movie was on in the background and I was showing my daughter like, oh, look, there's Miles Morales.
- 24:08Oh, man, One day.
- 24:10We're getting there.
- 24:11One day.
- 24:12So I'm curious, I know, you know, the character that I put down here, you know at all why he matters as far as Spider Man.
- 24:20The character, of course, being Captain America to Uncle Ben and Aunt May, it's very small.
- 24:25I don't.
- 24:25I mean, Steve Rogers, also a New Yorker, he's from Brooklyn.
- 24:29They're from Queensland.
- 24:31I'm guessing age wise, Aunt May and Uncle Ben would have been just a little bit younger than Captain America.
- 24:38So he would have been a superhero to them when they were children.
- 24:42Yeah.
- 24:43That's a good instinct.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:44Because sliding time scale, when this is being written in the early 60s and 70s and the like, Aunt May and Uncle Ben would have been boomers in the sense of growing up around the time being.
- 24:56Ben would have been an active soldier in World War II.
- 24:59Okay, got it.
- 25:00So peers with Captain America.
- 25:02So.
- 25:03Yes.
- 25:04So there's.
- 25:05I can't remember which one it is.
- 25:06I forgot to look this up.
- 25:07But there's one where he actually meets him very briefly and like kind of not.
- 25:12I don't think they fight together, but it's more like, oh my gosh, you're Captain America.
- 25:15Oh my gosh, you're Ben Parker.
- 25:16You know, you're a soldier, fellow soldier, working against evil together.
- 25:20And it's like, obviously that can't happen anymore because they would really be old and decrepit if we kept that in line.
- 25:29But what happens later on is that as sliding time scale is gone, Ben is no longer someone who fought in World War II.
- 25:36Probably around now would probably be Vietnam.
- 25:39More than likely maybe Desert Storm if you want to make him a little younger.
- 25:44But part of his motivation in doing the things that he did to fight as a soldier is stories he heard of Captain America.
- 25:52Ah, okay.
- 25:53And later on, when Peter's parents die, he's raising him, they actually bond over Captain America comics together.
- 26:02That's cool.
- 26:03Okay.
- 26:04It's just one of those little fun things.
- 26:05It's like, obviously it's not like the biggest thing, but it's part of it.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:09That's cool.
- 26:10And I like that you introduced the idea of the sliding time scale because it's like Peter Parker will always remain high school, college age, you know, as the.
- 26:21In our time scale does shift.
- 26:23Yeah.
- 26:24Which I love.
- 26:25He's like Bart Simpson in that way.
- 26:27Yeah.
- 26:27Apparently it's been 12 to 13 years since the Fantastic Four have showed up.
- 26:32So he's like, supposed to be 28, but whatever.
- 26:36He's not getting older than that.
- 26:38No.
- 26:38Well, because we can't possibly have our characters age and do responsible things like, you know, getting married or anything like that.
- 26:44That would have kids.
- 26:45Kind of idiot would do that.
- 26:46Yeah.
- 26:46No, he's like, forever.
- 26:49Yeah.
- 26:49He's like the girls that Leonardo DiCaprio dates.
- 26:52Oh, exactly.
- 26:58Next up on our next one.
- 27:00I know.
- 27:00I actually.
- 27:01I had to look it up in my great big encyclopedia, but then it came back to me.
- 27:05The next one on your list was Johnny Jerome.
- 27:08Yes.
- 27:08Tell us.
- 27:09Which in Aunt May lore is an old boyfriend that was like her love before Ben Parker.
- 27:15And then in some stories, she does sort of reunite with him later.
- 27:19Yes.
- 27:21After he gets out of prison.
- 27:23Yes.
- 27:23Yes.
- 27:24So I really like that you even mention him because it gives us a glimpse of Aunt May outside of the Spider man story.
- 27:34Right.
- 27:34Like, she had a whole life.
- 27:36She had a romantic life.
- 27:37She's not just this frail old lady, you know, from the day she's born until she's done.
- 27:42Exactly.
- 27:43And so it helps give her character development.
- 27:46And I love that.
- 27:48This is from Spectacular Spider man annual number four.
- 27:51That kind of goes into her and Uncle Ben's backstory a little bit.
- 27:55And she was in the midst of a love triangle.
- 27:57Like, she liked Ben, but she had been told by her mother, if you want to live in this world, you've got to find a man who's going to take care of you.
- 28:03It doesn't matter what he's like.
- 28:05So just find the richest man you can get with.
- 28:08End up married to him.
- 28:09And Johnny Jerome was that kind of guy, but he was also a crook, which is how he was kind of financing himself.
- 28:15And so May is torn between her feelings for Ben, but also at the same time, her feelings of what she's been told by her own mother.
- 28:22So face is behind her for that.
- 28:24Of what is a proper lady supposed to do in these scenarios?
- 28:28Ultimately decides, no, I'm not going to be with Johnny.
- 28:31I'm going to be with Ben because he actually loves me.
- 28:34And it's a beautiful romance.
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:36It's their notebook.
- 28:37I love it.
- 28:38And then later on, as you mentioned, like, she reunites with Johnny after he gets out of prison, and he kind of, like, tries to get back with her, and she's like, no, I'll help you out now, but we're
- 28:49through.
- 28:49There's only one man for me.
- 28:50And that's been changed since then.
- 28:52Once again, comics.
- 28:53But that's another issue.
- 28:54Not to say you can't find love when you're not saying you're.
- 28:57I feel like there's some bitterness there, Christian.
- 28:59There is a lot of bitterness at current Spider man editorial.
- 29:03In my life.
- 29:04I have to ask God for forgiveness every time before I take communion.
- 29:08Okay.
- 29:08For your thoughts about Spider Man.
- 29:10Yes.
- 29:11Not Spider man, his editorial, the editorial.
- 29:13Okay, okay, I got it.
- 29:16But yeah, a fascinating, like, one off character.
- 29:18I'm pretty sure there's never been anything on him since then.
- 29:21But, like, helps enrich the backstory of Aimee, who could just be seen as like, this purity sue of a sort of, like, she's like the motivation for Peter to, like, be better than who he is to make sure
- 29:32she's taken care of.
- 29:33It's like she has no depth herself.
- 29:34Let's add some depth to her.
- 29:36Yeah.
- 29:36Which is often done women characters in this comic book genre.
- 29:41So I love that we.
- 29:42Yeah, we can flesh her out a little bit with these other characters.
- 30:46Next up, we have Anna Watson, Mary Jane's aunt.
- 30:49Also not suffering from nephewism because her parents are alive.
- 30:51But that's a bad thing.
- 30:52But what do you have to say about Anna?
- 30:56So in some comic books, Anna Watson and Aunt May are best friends, and so they're always trying to get their niece and nephew together.
- 31:04I actually haven't read those comic books.
- 31:07I cheated, and that's what I found in my marble encyclopedia.
- 31:10That's fine.
- 31:10That's all I know.
- 31:11That's all I know.
- 31:12Matter is you learned it.
- 31:13Yeah, it's that funny thing of, like, in the early Spider man comics, Aunt May has been trying to set him up with Anna Watson's niece for, like, 30 some issues.
- 31:22And it's so very funny because, like, they're best friends.
- 31:26And, like, it's so nice.
- 31:27Peter's like, oh, it's so nice for her to have someone besides me so that she can.
- 31:32Who is also same age, has dealt with loss in the past.
- 31:35But then you get the most.
- 31:36One of the most iconic moments in comics of the reveal of Face a Tiger.
- 31:40You just hit the jackpot.
- 31:41It's like, this is what I've been avoiding for 30 issues.
- 31:46Because the way they've been describing her, she has, like, a great personality and, like, you'll be wonderful together.
- 31:51And it's like, okay, cool.
- 31:53I guess.
- 31:53But yeah, forgot to mention, she's a knockout.
- 31:58Could have led with that one.
- 31:59But yeah, so not too much.
- 32:01I mean, they've, like, they're not flat with each other, but they're not like the most robust characterization when, like, it's nice for Aunt May to have like a peer her own age that they can go and do things
- 32:13together with.
- 32:13Yeah.
- 32:14Next we have Nathan Lubinsky.
- 32:17Do you know anything about Nathan?
- 32:18This is probably part of the editorial that you hate.
- 32:21Because Nathan Lubinsky is like, in a more modern writing of Spider man, and he is a love interest of May after Ben has long passed.
- 32:31He's the one I don't hate.
- 32:33There are aspects of him, like he's a little judgmental on Peter, which not knowing that Peter is Spider Man.
- 32:40Peter looks like he's very flighty.
- 32:42He's not always there on time.
- 32:44So, like, I find it a little more understandable than some of her other beaus as time goes on, who are real jerks about it.
- 32:52But Nathan is a guy, is an older man.
- 32:55May, at a certain point in time in the 80s, opens up her home to other elderly people as like, a place that can all live together, look after each other.
- 33:03And Nathan is one of the ones who comes in there and like, they have a romance.
- 33:07And unfortunately the Vulture gets involved and Nathan dies on a crossfire.
- 33:13And that's like the huge moment was like, what could have been is gone now because of the actions of Spider Man's life.
- 33:23Pile on the guilt and shame.
- 33:24Yep, yep.
- 33:25Okay.
- 33:26But we do get face behind me again.
- 33:29Like, she is a whole person outside of being Peter Parker's aunt.
- 33:34It's an interesting thing too if, like, as an elderly person, you've lost your spouse.
- 33:38Like, do you just live the rest of your life alone?
- 33:41That's a choice you can make.
- 33:42But you can also choose to find love again.
- 33:44And written well, I'm fine with that.
- 33:47It's like when it just happens to be J.
- 33:50Jonah Jameson's father, who's never been mentioned before until now, and they get married.
- 33:55Or it happens to be this new guy, Ricardo, right now who's like, really hates Peter because of the reasons I mentioned.
- 34:02But he's a jerk about it.
- 34:04I can't handle it.
- 34:05I will say though, I actually enjoyed her and Jarvis together while Peter was in the New Avengers.
- 34:11They started dating.
- 34:12Oh, yeah.
- 34:13Was that also a little bit in the Amazing Spider Man?
- 34:16Yes.
- 34:17Wait, is that or Ultimate Spider Man?
- 34:19Ultimate Spider Man.
- 34:19Ultimate Spider Man.
- 34:21The Animated Series.
- 34:23Was it Coulson?
- 34:25I can't remember.
- 34:26There's someone.
- 34:27I know what you're talking about.
- 34:28Yeah, there's a love interest somewhere.
- 34:30Like Avenger adjacent.
- 34:33Ultimate Spider man is not my favorite Animated series, so I'VE only watched it once.
- 34:37Okay.
- 34:38But I kind of remember what you're talking about.
- 34:40Yeah, I might have to go back.
- 34:42All right, here's my joke pick.
- 34:45So I'm very curious if you figured out who this is.
- 34:48Do you know who Linda Brown is?
- 34:50No, I have no idea.
- 34:54Can you tell me Uncle Ben and Aunt May's first appearance.
- 34:58And I will give you a hint.
- 34:59It is not amazing fantasy 15.
- 35:02Yes.
- 35:02No, no, no.
- 35:03They have their own like, short.
- 35:06There's like a little short comic book.
- 35:10Oh, gosh.
- 35:11But who are they connected to?
- 35:13I can't remember.
- 35:14So about five or six months before Amazing Fantasy XV comes out, reusing character designs and names in Strange Tales 97, one of the vignettes.
- 35:22There is Ant Man, Uncle Ben looking after a girl named Linda Brown.
- 35:27We don't know how this happened or anything like that.
- 35:29She's amnesiac and it turns out she's been in a wheelchair.
- 35:32She's in a wheelchair?
- 35:33Yes.
- 35:34She's a mermaid.
- 35:35She finds it by going out in the ocean.
- 35:37That's the end of the story.
- 35:37It's like five pages long.
- 35:39And there's just that one.
- 35:40That's it.
- 35:41And then like months later, we get Spider Man.
- 35:44And then that was Mei and Ben.
- 35:47Yes.
- 35:48Man, that was a deep cut.
- 35:51It's one of those like it was told to me forever ago.
- 35:53And I'm like, no, that's not true.
- 35:54Then I looked it up and I was like, oh, that's very true.
- 35:59So those are so many other ones, of course, have to talk.
- 36:01We've talked a little bit of one of the main people behind their faces.
- 36:06That of course being our main character normally.
- 36:07But Peter Parker, what are our thoughts on their relationship with him?
- 36:11Yeah, I think this is the thing when you are a mentor, it's a two way street.
- 36:16You are giving and receiving.
- 36:18And I think May more so than Ben because again, mostly Ben is known for his absence.
- 36:25May's influenced by Peter and in some of the modern Spider man tellings, she discovers who he is and then actually gets to like help and collaborate with him as he's fighting the villains of the world.
- 36:38And I think he makes her better.
- 36:39I think caring for him makes her a better person.
- 36:42And that's why not letting her know is totally irresponsible.
- 36:45It's easy to understand why a child just getting these powers for the first time would act this way.
- 36:50But an adult man, it's very irresponsible.
- 36:54So all those nights she's worried about where you were and you gave some story of like, oh, I got run over, or, oh, someone pushed me.
- 37:00Something's got to give.
- 37:01Like, it's so very crucial to them because how things went originally when how you actually do a milestone issue in the 0 the hundreds is when Matt May dies the first time in Amazing Spider Man 400.
- 37:15It's huge because he is losing his mother.
- 37:19And there's a really nice scene of him quoting Peter Pan to her because it's one of her favorite books.
- 37:24And that's when she passes away.
- 37:26And then, of course, a couple issues later, we find out it wasn't actually her.
- 37:29It was an actress hired by Norman Osborn, who's come back seemingly from the dead.
- 37:33He never died in the first place.
- 37:34And, you know, clone song and nonsense happens.
- 37:36And Aunt May comes back, but she doesn't remember that Peter Parker is Spider man because she never learned.
- 37:41Then we get the J where she finds out after he gets, like, bloodily beaten in a battle.
- 37:47And that's like herbalization.
- 37:48I should have figured this out years ago.
- 37:50But they actually talk about it, about why he hid it from her, why she could have handled it if he had just told her, if they had just trusted each other a little more.
- 37:57It's so great.
- 37:58But comics being comics, he sells his marriage to Mephisto because that's what a responsible person does.
- 38:04That, of course, means he also, since he revealed his identity to the world in Civil War, the responsible thing to do is to use that same demon to make everyone forget everything.
- 38:11Yes, it was Dr.
- 38:12Strange, ultimately, but that's because they wanted the retcon it because they felt bad.
- 38:16So she doesn't know.
- 38:17It has been over 400 issues since then and our milestone issue, 1000.
- 38:22She still doesn't know, even after finding out.
- 38:25So spoilers for modern comics.
- 38:28Her and Aunt.
- 38:29Aunt Ben, Uncle Ben have tried multiple times over in the past to have children.
- 38:34She suffered a lot of miscarriages, which I know is huge for a lot of husbands and wives.
- 38:39It's like we wanted the child this much, but it just couldn't happen.
- 38:42Finally, the child is born, as we were told years ago.
- 38:46But comics are kind of comics.
- 38:48The stillborn child and another child were switched, and the actual child that lived was theirs.
- 38:55Cormac Crane.
- 38:55Now, who, of course, has become a villain because rich people are villains.
- 38:59That's the depth of Joe Kelly.
- 39:03A lot of nuance there.
- 39:06And it actually brings up.
- 39:07I will say there are some good points being made here in that she had an entire life she could have had with another child.
- 39:13Her actual Birth child that's been stripped away from her.
- 39:15There's a lot of implications for that that under better writing, I'd be more happier with.
- 39:20But also at the same time, her relationship with Peter.
- 39:22Because for the past two decades, they've had him really acting like a man child who doesn't really own up to his responsibilities when it comes to her.
- 39:29This would have been, like, the perfect opportunity, but with supervillain nonsense, Cormac, now ravaged, has stolen her memories away from him.
- 39:37So we're still in the midst of that story as time goes on here.
- 39:39But maybe there'll be an ultimate, satisfying conclus.
- 39:42I doubt it.
- 39:43But I want to be proven wrong.
- 39:45I want you to be proven wrong, too.
- 39:46I want a happy conclusion there.
- 39:49Because once again, it is very irresponsible not to tell your mother.
- 39:53Yes, she's not your birth mother, but she is your mother.
- 39:55What you've been doing all this time, if I ever did that, no matter how many times I saved the world, I know my mother would murder me.
- 40:00She'd crucify me for the whole world to see, and no one would convict me.
- 40:04She's a good mom.
- 40:05Yes.
- 40:06No.
- 40:07All right, so those are one I had.
- 40:09Do you have any honorable mentions you want to throw in?
- 40:11No.
- 40:11Okay, perfect.
- 40:13Fair enough.
- 40:13I'm actually going to throw Dr.
- 40:15Octopus in there because early on he kidnaps her and Betty Brant, but he treats her so well.
- 40:22He's like the perfect gentleman to her.
- 40:23So she loves him and not that despicable Spider Man.
- 40:26And as time goes on, he actually becomes a tenant in her house in the 70s, and based on what happened earlier and they start a romantic relationship and almost get married and, wow.
- 40:40They find out the reason why he wants to get married with her isn't because he's fallen in love with her, even though he kind of has.
- 40:45It's because some obscure relative died and they had the rights to nuclear power plants and I think Canada or something like that and Dr.
- 40:52Octopus wanted to have those nuclear power plants comics.
- 40:57But actually, as time goes on, they've actually got a rapport with each other that is sometimes almost romantic still.
- 41:03Okay, okay, I like that.
- 41:04I'm gonna have to read those.
- 41:05I like that.
- 41:06All right.
- 41:06All right.
- 41:07So what can we learn from these mentors when it comes to how we mentor others in our own lives?
- 41:13Gosh, it's like, I think some people might even still or might now look back and go, that's so corny.
- 41:21Right?
- 41:21With great power comes great responsibility.
- 41:24But I think as we're mentoring, like, younger generations, people behind us.
- 41:29Like, say the corny thing.
- 41:31Say the thing that's obvious.
- 41:33But you would, you know, if you think about that person you're mentoring, they're gonna play this voice in their head over time, make your voice say something that matters.
- 41:43Sometimes things are cliche for a reason.
- 41:45Like, yeah, it's corny to hear that, but also, it makes a lot of sense.
- 41:49Oh, I have been gifted with great power, yet I don't have spider powers.
- 41:52But I have been gifted with, you know, the people I have in my life with.
- 41:57You know, the scripture that I'm studying to teach to other people.
- 41:59Like, I need to be responsible to teach it well so that they don't go and do stupid things.
- 42:04That's.
- 42:05That's, that's great.
- 42:06And I would add on that is that it's okay to screw up and not know exactly what you're supposed to do.
- 42:11They were handed a near impossible situation.
- 42:14Your brother and his wife are dead.
- 42:17They have left a son behind.
- 42:19You have no children of your own.
- 42:21What do.
- 42:21Well, you're gonna screw up even when you're doing good.
- 42:24Like, Peter was not a saint when Uncle Ben died.
- 42:27Even despite the teaching he and May gave him.
- 42:29That's not their fault.
- 42:30The people have to grow.
- 42:31They have to make their own mistakes and decisions.
- 42:34Just love them and be with them.
- 42:35I like that.
- 42:36I thought a lot.
- 42:37Right.
- 42:38So what parts of their journey in particular should we emulate or excise from our own lives?
- 42:44I would say open door.
- 42:46Open door.
- 42:47Open heart policy.
- 42:48Right.
- 42:48If you see someone that needs care, maybe needs a place to sleep, whatever that might be.
- 42:56Let's go.
- 42:56Yeah.
- 42:57Both very generous people, and they never really had means, but they'd give you a shirt off their back and look after you.
- 43:02That's always great.
- 43:04I'd say be more open.
- 43:05I would.
- 43:06Excise.
- 43:07Hiding things that don't need to be hidden.
- 43:11Be honest.
- 43:12You're frustrated with your nephew because he's not telling you.
- 43:15I'm not going to buy that story.
- 43:16Let's actually have a talk because I respect you too much not to.
- 43:21Yeah, they don't do that at all.
- 43:23But that's not.
- 43:24Yeah, that's like a fun comic.
- 43:25Yeah, whatever.
- 43:26Yeah, let's excise that.
- 43:28I like it.
- 43:28Yes.
- 43:29It's a good reminder for the teens in my own life, sometimes I don't press them on stuff.
- 43:34All right, so we will be doing a special bonus question for this one.
- 43:36And we talked about what happened if they both weren't here.
- 43:38Obviously the story as is as Uncle Ben dies.
- 43:41But Jill and I will be answering the question, what if Aunt May had died instead of Uncle Ben?
- 43:45How might things have gone differently there?
- 43:46So anything you want to add before we wrap things up?
- 43:49Yes.
- 43:50So I think sometimes in pop culture and in our real lives, we tend to elevate the father figures in our life.
- 43:59And quite often there's a Freudian thing that we do and we give the mother figures all the blame for the things that don't go well.
- 44:11And I don't see it play out necessarily.
- 44:13Like, Peter's not bitter with Aunt May or he's not, like, grumpy towards her.
- 44:17But I do think we give this weight to Uncle Ben in his absence and he gets to play this, like, supreme moral figure.
- 44:27Saint.
- 44:28Yeah, saint.
- 44:29Yeah.
- 44:29He's the saint of the story.
- 44:30And, like, for most of the tellings of Spider Man, Aunt May is like this dumb, frail lady that's just, like, stuck to you in the dishes and, like, why were you late again?
- 44:43Yeah.
- 44:45And I don't think that's fair.
- 44:47But I do really appreciate, as time has gone on, she gets fleshed out a little bit more.
- 44:52She becomes a full character on her own.
- 44:54But I would like us to look at other characters, both in real life and in the fiction that we consume and think about the weight that we give the men and the women.
- 45:05That's a great point.
- 45:06And you trigger a memory, too, of other things Mae has done that I would say we should emulate is that she is very focused on looking after other people.
- 45:13We kind of mentioned it earlier, but, like, the feast scenario we see with her that's in the comics as well, is her like, okay, I know where I came from.
- 45:22I know what I've suffered through.
- 45:23Let me help other people who are suffering in the midst of that.
- 45:26That is something that I think we all should look forward to doing in some way, shape or form.
- 45:29We don't have to be in charge.
- 45:30You don't have to volunteer every weekend.
- 45:32But find a way to look out for the least of these.
- 45:35Yeah, yeah.
- 45:36And look out for your community, the people right in front of you.
- 45:40Jill, do you have any recommendations for the audience to check out?
- 45:43Well, I'm totally stealing yours.
- 45:45What I am going to be checking out, and I hope others will too.
- 45:49And then, like, write and tell me what you think about it, is bullet points.
- 45:52I'm going for some what ifs.
- 45:54It's a fun one.
- 45:55Messes things up.
- 45:56Like, everyone kind of goes all over the place.
- 45:58They're not where they're supposed to be.
- 45:59And that's kind of the point is, like, what would happen, you know, if one bullet killed one man?
- 46:04How.
- 46:04How could things go very differently?
- 46:05It's very fun.
- 46:07Yeah.
- 46:07My recommendation is going to be amazing Spider Man 500, where after helping Dr.
- 46:12Strange and the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, everyone stop an invasion from Dormammu as a thank you, Dr.
- 46:18Strange gives five minutes of time for Peter to talk to Uncle Ben.
- 46:25And like, it's a very sweet scene of like, yeah, I know you think you made a lot of mistakes.
- 46:31I don't know the context.
- 46:32We only have five minutes to talk.
- 46:33But you're my boy.
- 46:34I love you.
- 46:35Keep at it, whatever it is.
- 46:36Like, he doesn't know about Spider man or anything of that.
- 46:38But like, it's still a very nice scene.
- 46:40And that's how you do a milestone issue.
- 46:45Very cool.
