- 0:42Speaker 1: Thanks for being with us on a Thursday thiss portion
- 0:44Speaker 1: of the program brought to you by Central Texas Sports
- 0:47Speaker 1: Medicine Trey. I missed Bob Seger's birthday yesterday. We need
- 0:51Speaker 1: to apply a little Bob Seger before we're done today.
- 0:54Speaker 1: He was eighty one years young yesterday.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Man, we have a pack show.
- 1:00Speaker 1: We've got Steve Denton on because I forgot him yesterday.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I remembered at eleven o'clock last night. It was too
- 1:08Speaker 1: late by then. We've got a high school report, and
- 1:11Speaker 1: coming up in this hour, Bob Herrig, the golf writer
- 1:14Speaker 1: from Sports Illustrated, is going to join me. His brand
- 1:17Speaker 1: new book is called Tiger v. Jack The Great Debate.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Bob Herrig will join us, And in the second hour
- 1:26Speaker 1: O m G is the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition. We're
- 1:32Speaker 1: going on a float trip on the North Platte River
- 1:36Speaker 1: out of Casper, Wyoming. And then we have a community
- 1:45Speaker 1: real live animals attack story from our very own community
- 1:49Speaker 1: to talk about, which happened less than twenty four hours ago.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So phone the neighbors, wake the kids. The NCAA, which
- 1:59Speaker 1: hasn't made a good decision in about one hundred years,
- 2:03Speaker 1: has decided that the basketball tournament has broken. So they're
- 2:08Speaker 1: going to add eight more teams. Seventy six teams, the
- 2:16Speaker 1: largest since it moved to sixty four in nineteen eighty five,
- 2:20Speaker 1: went from sixty four to sixty five and oh one
- 2:24Speaker 1: added three more in twenty eleven, and now eight more teams.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Doubleheaders on back to back days in Dayton, the Tuesday
- 2:38Speaker 1: and Wednesday. The men's tournament will feature twelve games played
- 2:40Speaker 1: by twenty four teams in two different cities. There will
- 2:44Speaker 1: now be three games each day in Dayton, three games
- 2:47Speaker 1: each day in a second city to be determined. Just
- 2:55Speaker 1: it makes my head hurt. These people make my head hurt.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's just so frustrating. Aggie Baseball getting ready to play
- 3:10Speaker 1: Ole Miss in Oxford.
- 3:12Speaker 3: That is tomorrow evening.
- 3:15Speaker 1: That is a six thirty start, so it'll be six
- 3:19Speaker 1: fifteen here on the zone. The Rangers lost two out
- 3:23Speaker 1: of three to the Yankees, including today nine to two.
- 3:28Speaker 3: The final nine to two.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Mackenzie Gore pitched five really good innings and then he didn't.
- 3:38Speaker 3: But actually the bullpen was terrible.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Stop me if you've heard that before. Beaks was terrible,
- 3:48Speaker 1: Alexander wasn't very good. Gray wasn't very good. They ended
- 3:53Speaker 1: up giving up fourteen hits in nine runs, nine to
- 3:56Speaker 1: two to the final and still not hitting with men
- 3:59Speaker 1: on base. I tell you, Ezekiel Durant is hitting. He
- 4:02Speaker 1: had a home run and both RBIs with the dinger.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But other than that, no, the Rangers get beat by
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Yankees nine to two. The Astros have the day off.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They need more than one day off, and they learned yesterday.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Carlos Correas out for the year after getting whooped by
- 4:27Speaker 1: the Dodgers twelve to two.
- 4:31Speaker 3: They got a run rule. They don't do that in
- 4:33Speaker 3: Major League Baseball, but they should.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And another casualty with the nine game conference schedule, Florida
- 4:42Speaker 1: State and Georgia have canceled their home and home series,
- 4:46Speaker 1: which was scheduled.
- 4:47Speaker 3: For twenty seven and twenty eight.
- 4:50Speaker 1: They're working on a neutral site matchup according to the schools,
- 4:56Speaker 1: so the ACC is quote easy into a nine game
- 5:02Speaker 1: conference schedule this season as well. Colorado Avalanche star Cale
- 5:08Speaker 1: mccarr will seek his second straight Norris Trophies, one of
- 5:11Speaker 1: three finalist name for the defensive player who demonstrates the
- 5:16Speaker 1: greatest all round ability at the position. Zach Wriinsky of
- 5:21Speaker 1: the Blue Jackets and Rasmus Dollin of the Sabers is
- 5:25Speaker 1: also on that list. Tonight one game Hurricanes Flyers. The
- 5:32Speaker 1: Canes lead two games to none. The series shifts to Philadelphia.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Last night, Buffalo at home won its first game of
- 5:42Speaker 1: the series against the Canadians for two the final and
- 5:47Speaker 1: those Ducks of Anaheim even the series with a three
- 5:52Speaker 1: to one win over the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Jim Nill, the fine general manager the Stars, met with
- 6:01Speaker 1: the media today. Talked about the disappointment because of high expectations,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the frustration of the season, the demanding compressed schedule because
- 6:13Speaker 1: of the Olympics, and the injuries.
- 6:16Speaker 3: My gosh, the injuries.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Neil announced that Miko ranton and tore his MCL at
- 6:23Speaker 1: the Olympics, yet he's still played Oscar back wrist injury,
- 6:30Speaker 1: Nathan Bastian broken finger with surgery. Jamie Benn collapsed lung,
- 6:36Speaker 1: Leon Bishell fractured leg and ankle, sprains shoulder, Michael Bunning
- 6:42Speaker 1: groin injury, Matt Dushane concussion, Let's see Thomas Harley broken foot.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Let's see who else? Arturo Ury high ankle spring Game
- 6:59Speaker 1: five Deals Lunk was fractured from a leg and ankle
- 7:04Speaker 1: facial laceration in the playoffs, Tyler seg acl Sam Steele
- 7:13Speaker 1: groin injury, Tyler Miles, Elia Lubushkin. All of these injuries
- 7:19Speaker 1: by the Dallas Stars this year. They are golfing in
- 7:25Speaker 1: North Carolina at Quail Hollow. Sun Jam is leading at
- 7:31Speaker 1: six under parr. Kevin Rattan I've never heard of is
- 7:35Speaker 1: minus five. I believe he may have just finished his round.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Mack McCarty on the course at minus five, Tommy Fleetwood
- 7:45Speaker 1: on the course at minus four. Let's see Tony fen
- 7:50Speaker 1: now at minus three. Justin Thomas on the course at
- 7:53Speaker 1: minus three. Rory hasn't been doing too well. He is
- 7:58Speaker 1: even par right now for his round. The top tennis
- 8:03Speaker 1: players already upset they're not receiving a bigger piece of
- 8:07Speaker 1: the pie at the French Open. Now they're hoping Wimbledon
- 8:12Speaker 1: and US Open will respond to their demands. Janick Center,
- 8:16Speaker 1: the number one men's player, has joined number one arena Sablinka,
- 8:22Speaker 1: saying the players may consider a boycott. He's at the
- 8:27Speaker 1: Italian Open. He wouldn't commit to a boycott, saying it's
- 8:32Speaker 1: tough to say. I can't predict the future. The players
- 8:36Speaker 1: have targeted the French Open for reducing players share of
- 8:40Speaker 1: the revenue to a alleged fifteen percent compared to twenty
- 8:44Speaker 1: two percent at ATP and WTA events. And there will
- 8:51Speaker 1: be no triple Crown this year. Kentucky Derby winner Golden
- 8:56Speaker 1: Tempo will not race in the Preakness. Sherriy Debo, the
- 9:01Speaker 1: trainer announcing in a statement that Golden Tempo would not
- 9:06Speaker 1: be racing May sixteenth so her horse could have a
- 9:10Speaker 1: little more time following a tremendous effort in the Derby,
- 9:15Speaker 1: saying Golden Tempo's health, happiness and long term future will
- 9:20Speaker 1: always remain our top priority. We are looking forward to
- 9:25Speaker 1: pointing him toward the Belmont Stakes.
- 9:28Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Last year's Derby winner, Sovereignty, also skipped the Preakness after
- 9:37Speaker 1: winning at Churchill Downs, So there you go.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I think that's all.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I will tell you that we've got Bob Harry coming
- 9:49Speaker 1: up talking about his book Tiger v.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Jack.
- 9:53Speaker 1: We're going to visit with Steve Denton because I forgot yesterday.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Next Tuesday, to Doyle is going to join us. His
- 10:02Speaker 1: book is called Ringo A fab Life. I have just
- 10:06Speaker 1: started on that book. It is terrific on Richard Starkey
- 10:11Speaker 1: Nay Ringo, star of the Beatles, So we will be
- 10:17Speaker 1: visiting with him on a Tuesday of next week. Of course,
- 10:22Speaker 1: we have the Writer's roundtable on Monday tomorrow. Ryan Starr
- 10:26Speaker 1: will be here and I will visit my weekly Friday
- 10:31Speaker 1: visit with Kirk Bowles of the Houston Chronicle on the
- 10:35Speaker 1: program tomorrow. Okay, we're going to take a break. We're
- 10:42Speaker 1: going to come back and visit with Steve Denton after this.
- 10:47Speaker 1: For Ancho Insurance.

- 11:20Speaker 3: If you miss tech Tags Live, you miss well.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Jason.
- 11:22Speaker 6: It's been really good times for that A and M
- 11:24Speaker 6: football team and the recruiting profile right now they're just
- 11:28Speaker 6: not only are on a heater.
- 11:29Speaker 7: It feels like it can continue for a while.
- 11:31Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, look look for things to continue through the
- 11:35Speaker 8: months of June and July. And this A and M
- 11:39Speaker 8: class that is number one in the country and with
- 11:44Speaker 8: the with the most five star commits already and trending
- 11:49Speaker 8: for several more.
- 11:51Speaker 3: It's uh it's really.
- 11:54Speaker 8: You know, it's shaping up to be one of the
- 11:57Speaker 8: one of the top classes we've seen in a while
- 11:59Speaker 8: around on College Station, and one of the best that
- 12:04Speaker 8: we've seen in all of college football over the last
- 12:07Speaker 8: few years. So this is Mike Elco's got some things
- 12:12Speaker 8: brewing and those guys are really putting in some work
- 12:14Speaker 8: over there.
- 12:15Speaker 9: Techacs Live brought to you by David Gardner's Jewelers hang
- 12:18Speaker 9: Out weekdays from eight to eleven on the Zone.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Welcome to The Steve Denton Show, featuring the min's tennis
- 12:26Speaker 2: coach at Texas.
- 12:27Speaker 3: A and M and your host, Chip Power.
- 12:29Speaker 2: The Steve Denton Show is brought to you by Texas
- 12:32Speaker 2: Regional Lie Center.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We're going to go out to the Players Fund Center
- 12:36Speaker 1: phone line where Steve Dentton has patiently waited for the
- 12:39Speaker 1: last twenty four hours for me to call him.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Steve, How are you.
- 12:45Speaker 10: I'm doing great?
- 12:46Speaker 3: How are you better today?
- 12:48Speaker 1: I told you at eleven o'clock last night, I remembered
- 12:51Speaker 1: that I forgot to call you yesterday.
- 12:55Speaker 10: Yeah, well, I mean that's those things happens. I've probably
- 13:02Speaker 10: done it to you several times over the years as well.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Yeah, but you have an excuse. You're actually working for
- 13:09Speaker 1: a living. I just have to sit here and talk
- 13:12Speaker 1: on the radio. And I had your name on my
- 13:15Speaker 1: calendar yesterday even and I thought about setting my alarm
- 13:20Speaker 1: and I said, no, I don't need to set my alarm.
- 13:22Speaker 3: It's Wednesday. I know Steve Denton.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Is on and I didn't remember until I'm laying in
- 13:28Speaker 1: bed with the lights out last night.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Pretty funny, you thought it was funny.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I was just like, oh, man, I can't believe I
- 13:38Speaker 1: did that. So I just had a story about sab
- 13:42Speaker 1: Linka and Sinner both talking about a possible boycott on
- 13:47Speaker 1: a professional tour because the French opened, according to them,
- 13:53Speaker 1: decreased the percentage that they're going to pay in winnings
- 13:56Speaker 1: this year for that tournament. Having played on that tour
- 14:01Speaker 1: a lot, what's your opinion about something like that, Well, I.
- 14:08Speaker 10: Mean, uh, the first the first word that comes to
- 14:12Speaker 10: mind is greed as being a bit greedy. I think
- 14:16Speaker 10: you know they they they make their living and their
- 14:20Speaker 10: endorsement money based on all the majors.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Yep.
- 14:24Speaker 10: The Grand Slams are the most important thing for visibility,
- 14:29Speaker 10: not only for them but but also for UH for
- 14:34Speaker 10: the tournament as well, and uh, I guess they may
- 14:38Speaker 10: be not keeping up in terms of Grand Slams typically
- 14:43Speaker 10: raise that prize money, you know, five per year, Yes
- 14:48Speaker 10: for these for these players and apparently I guess as
- 14:53Speaker 10: the top players in the world, that doesn't seem that
- 14:57Speaker 10: that's quite enough yet. And you know, I you know,
- 15:00Speaker 10: they're making lots of money, uh and uh, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 10: kind of holding the tournament's hostage, especially at this late
- 15:09Speaker 10: late stage, is pretty pretty tough rhetoric. I think.
- 15:13Speaker 3: So I'm I'm, I'm.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but from the outside, I
- 15:19Speaker 1: would I would think it would be pretty hard to
- 15:22Speaker 1: get all of those people in a room to agree
- 15:25Speaker 1: on much of anything.
- 15:27Speaker 10: Oh, absolutely, the all the IF tournaments, the federations as
- 15:32Speaker 10: well as uh, the players and the players unions and
- 15:37Speaker 10: all those types of things and the ATP. It is
- 15:40Speaker 10: difficult to get everybody together to agree and uh, but ultimately,
- 15:47Speaker 10: you know, the the game has been great to to
- 15:51Speaker 10: me obviously, it's been even even greater for those guys,
- 15:57Speaker 10: and uh for them to have those types the opportunity,
- 16:01Speaker 10: it's really amazing. And I think that you know, their
- 16:07Speaker 10: careers actually are going to be judged on how many
- 16:12Speaker 10: Grand Slams they win, right and you know, for I
- 16:18Speaker 10: don't think they want to get in that type of
- 16:20Speaker 10: situation where they end up with an argument. Like for example,
- 16:25Speaker 10: back what happened in the sixties when there was professional
- 16:28Speaker 10: tennis and Rod Labor, you know, won the Grand Slams
- 16:32Speaker 10: in sixty two, and then because of pro tennis coming
- 16:36Speaker 10: into play, they didn't play again until sixty nine. So
- 16:40Speaker 10: there were twenty eight Grand Slams that were played without
- 16:45Speaker 10: some of the top players in the world. And sometimes
- 16:48Speaker 10: people kind of forget about history a little bit and
- 16:52Speaker 10: don't recognize the ramifications of it. And you know, there's
- 16:59Speaker 10: a case right there. Both sides probably didn't fare very
- 17:03Speaker 10: well during that time because the top players in the
- 17:07Speaker 10: world were not allowed to play it at the Grand
- 17:10Speaker 10: Slan and there was pro tennis, and those guys were
- 17:14Speaker 10: going around this that going around the world playing kind
- 17:17Speaker 10: of exhibition tennis amongst themselves.
- 17:21Speaker 1: You went to the Australian Open finals twice. Do you
- 17:27Speaker 1: remember what your runner up checks were those times that
- 17:30Speaker 1: long ago?
- 17:32Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, I do, wasn't you know? It was less
- 17:37Speaker 10: than one hundred thousand dollars for both of them, right
- 17:39Speaker 10: after you pay and after obviously you get taxed and
- 17:43Speaker 10: stuff in their country significantly less than that. But you know,
- 17:48Speaker 10: at one time, and it's kind of laughable. You know,
- 17:52Speaker 10: John Newcomb had one of the best careers ever, one
- 17:56Speaker 10: of the great names in the sport, and you know,
- 18:00Speaker 10: just shows you what's happened over different eras. At one
- 18:04Speaker 10: time and maybe early nineteen eighty two, I was the
- 18:08Speaker 10: number eight in all time prize money and John Newcomb
- 18:12Speaker 10: was behind me, and that's kind of laughable of how
- 18:17Speaker 10: much better a career he had than I had. But
- 18:19Speaker 10: it just shows you the difference and the way the
- 18:23Speaker 10: prize money has translated over the years, and how much
- 18:28Speaker 10: more the guys of today have opportunities, and obviously it's
- 18:35Speaker 10: millions and millions of dollars different.
- 18:37Speaker 1: You know, if you would have had your own clothing
- 18:39Speaker 1: line like Nuke did you, you probably wouldn't be talking
- 18:42Speaker 1: to me right now, likely not.
- 18:47Speaker 10: Or a guy or another guy like Sam Smith for example. Yes,
- 18:51Speaker 10: you know he had that Adida shoe that yep, he did,
- 18:54Speaker 10: turned out to turned out to be addressed shoe as well,
- 18:57Speaker 10: and there were millions and millions of hues that he's
- 19:01Speaker 10: still getting royalty's on I'm sure nice from from way
- 19:06Speaker 10: back when. So yeah, it's you know, some of it
- 19:09Speaker 10: is residual. You know, you don't realize just what you've
- 19:12Speaker 10: gained from the sport by having the notoriety and being
- 19:17Speaker 10: out in the public eye and having the opportunities and
- 19:21Speaker 10: being able to cash in on all those all those
- 19:26Speaker 10: opportunities you know, as well and above whatever the prize
- 19:30Speaker 10: money is.
- 19:31Speaker 1: All right, We're going to talk college tennis when we
- 19:34Speaker 1: continue with Steve Dentton after this.
- 19:36Speaker 3: For the Texas Regional Eye Center, when it's time.
- 19:39Speaker 11: For cataract surgery, there's no need to drive to the
- 19:42Speaker 11: city for the most advanced cataract care. Everything you need
- 19:45Speaker 11: is right here at home and Texas Regional Lie Center.
- 19:48Speaker 11: The latest technology, the most experienced surgeons, and the patient
- 19:51Speaker 11: first care are community trusts. We're helping patients not only
- 19:55Speaker 11: remove cataracts, but regain vision with less dependence on glasses.
- 19:59Speaker 11: It's world class US innovation delivered with hometown heart. See
- 20:02Speaker 11: what you've been missing called three six four forty three
- 20:05Speaker 11: thirty one or visit Texas Regional Light dot com.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Today we're visiting with Steve Denton kind of wrapping up
- 20:12Speaker 1: the season Steve, let's go back to your first round
- 20:16Speaker 1: match last weekend against Wagner.
- 20:20Speaker 3: And start from there.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And and that that first match that you guys played
- 20:25Speaker 1: in one four to nothing.
- 20:27Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean it was great for us because we
- 20:29Speaker 10: got to play some players in that match that you know,
- 20:35Speaker 10: did a lot for our team this year. We got
- 20:38Speaker 10: to play Chris Thiagi and Ritesh Patil and singles, and
- 20:44Speaker 10: we also got to play Ethan Silva and doubles with Togan,
- 20:49Speaker 10: and so it was an opportunity for us to really
- 20:52Speaker 10: say thank you to them for all they contributed to
- 20:55Speaker 10: the team. To I guess the twelfth n didn't get
- 20:58Speaker 10: to see them play as much as year, but they
- 21:01Speaker 10: were integral parts of our team and success, and it
- 21:05Speaker 10: was an opportunity to give them one last chance to
- 21:09Speaker 10: get on the court and represent the Aggies. And so
- 21:13Speaker 10: for me that was the highlight, especially seeing as a senior,
- 21:19Speaker 10: seeing Ethan Silva, who had been so much for us
- 21:22Speaker 10: off the court, has been really a true ambassador to
- 21:25Speaker 10: our sport. To be able to have that opportunity, to
- 21:30Speaker 10: be able to play in front of his family and stuff,
- 21:33Speaker 10: that was a tremendous thing and I was super happy
- 21:36Speaker 10: that that got to happen, and then you know.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Once again the weather plays a factor. You guys had
- 21:43Speaker 1: to play at ten o'clock in the morning. I know
- 21:46Speaker 1: that certainly wasn't ideal. It wasn't the crowd that you
- 21:49Speaker 1: would have had have you had an indoor facility, been
- 21:54Speaker 1: able to play when you're supposed to. I'm not making
- 21:57Speaker 1: excuses for that because Stanford had to play there as well.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Tell me about the Stanford match.
- 22:04Speaker 10: Yeah, well, first of all, you know, we knew that
- 22:07Speaker 10: that was going to be a really tough match. Stanford
- 22:10Speaker 10: had got to the semifinals the year before at Baylor
- 22:15Speaker 10: and had their team back, and we're able to add
- 22:21Speaker 10: number one player from cal that ended up playing number
- 22:24Speaker 10: six in that match, and their number one player from
- 22:30Speaker 10: the most out throughout the season was Severe Banergee, who's
- 22:35Speaker 10: a senior and he won Wimbledon Juniors and still a
- 22:41Speaker 10: really good player, but he was not able to play
- 22:46Speaker 10: his best finis for throughout the season just because he
- 22:49Speaker 10: had a left rist injury, so he was having to
- 22:52Speaker 10: play a lot of guys with the splice back in
- 22:55Speaker 10: and unfortunately for us, he got healthy right before the
- 23:00Speaker 10: tournament and he hadn't had a lot of success, but
- 23:03Speaker 10: we knew his level play and so uh he ended
- 23:08Speaker 10: up uh, you know, dismantling. Colo played a great match
- 23:13Speaker 10: and I think he beat him sixty one six one,
- 23:17Speaker 10: and obviously that was a blow to us. And then
- 23:21Speaker 10: THEO at number one played in form Alex Verzegi. Uh,
- 23:27Speaker 10: you know, had a close match with him, and I
- 23:29Speaker 10: think he he lost maybe six four seven five, Uh,
- 23:34Speaker 10: And we were just you know, they were a little
- 23:37Speaker 10: better than us in a couple of other courts where
- 23:40Speaker 10: they won tight first sets. I know Alex Versina uh
- 23:44Speaker 10: and uh uh he uh had a chance to win
- 23:51Speaker 10: the first set, lost the tiebreaker and one break in
- 23:55Speaker 10: the second, and you know, we had another match or two,
- 23:58Speaker 10: and then of course Togan uh beat Lindsey Davenport's son,
- 24:03Speaker 10: Jagger Leach, and then we had a great doubles point
- 24:06Speaker 10: and we kind of stolen doubles point from them late
- 24:10Speaker 10: to give us a shot. And then of course Lathan
- 24:13Speaker 10: Scrivarsik was late and the third on serve four or
- 24:16Speaker 10: five when they when they got the fourth point. So
- 24:19Speaker 10: you know, we needed one of those matches to turn
- 24:21Speaker 10: in our favor. We knew they were a really good team. Uh,
- 24:26Speaker 10: unfortunate for us, but uh, you know it, it was
- 24:30Speaker 10: kind of a lot what happened this year, a lot
- 24:32Speaker 10: of closenesses, a lot of opportunities. And yet having said that,
- 24:36Speaker 10: we're still ranked pent in the country. Yeah, and so
- 24:40Speaker 10: I can't be too upset about that other than obviously
- 24:45Speaker 10: sure would like to be playing this weekend at TCU
- 24:49Speaker 10: and giving them heck there. But you know, Stanford's a
- 24:54Speaker 10: really good team and you know they're certainly uh, that'll
- 24:57Speaker 10: be a heck of a match against h against TU
- 25:01Speaker 10: on Saturday in Fort Worth.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Are are you going to have anybody at the individual
- 25:07Speaker 3: Steve Well.
- 25:08Speaker 10: That actually you know they've switched that to the fall.
- 25:11Speaker 10: Oh okay, so the A tournament. Alex Parstina was in
- 25:16Speaker 10: that for us earlier in the year. And do you
- 25:20Speaker 10: like that?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Do you like the fact they did that?
- 25:26Speaker 10: I prefer it in the spring obviously, but but you know,
- 25:30Speaker 10: I'm a purist and I like it at the end
- 25:32Speaker 10: of the year. But they have moved it. It seems
- 25:36Speaker 10: it seems like they've had a pilot for two years
- 25:39Speaker 10: and I think they've moved it permanently now to the spring,
- 25:44Speaker 10: to the fall. So we'll have to adjust there and
- 25:47Speaker 10: get guys ready to play in it and then and
- 25:50Speaker 10: then get guys ready to play on the on tour.
- 25:53Speaker 1: So, speaking speaking of that, how let's let's start with
- 25:57Speaker 1: kind of the end of the season and how you
- 25:59Speaker 1: would describe your season. You, as you mentioned, tenth in
- 26:04Speaker 1: the country and you live with a little disappointment because
- 26:07Speaker 1: you didn't advance, But that's the level that I think
- 26:11Speaker 1: everybody that you've come to expect from this program.
- 26:16Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean we have. You know, we've always been
- 26:19Speaker 10: super competitive and and you know we've been in the
- 26:23Speaker 10: tournament every year and our goal obviously is to make
- 26:26Speaker 10: a deep run, and you know that didn't quite happen
- 26:29Speaker 10: this year, but I'm proud of some things that we did.
- 26:33Speaker 10: We beat, you know, at one time, the number five team,
- 26:37Speaker 10: the number six team, and the number eight team in
- 26:39Speaker 10: the country, and I think that's one of the reasons
- 26:42Speaker 10: why we were as highly ranked as we were. You know,
- 26:46Speaker 10: we got to twenty wins, but you know, still had
- 26:51Speaker 10: some things out there that we wanted to kind of
- 26:53Speaker 10: accomplish with the team and didn't quite get that done.
- 26:55Speaker 1: And so.
- 26:57Speaker 10: You know, go back and kind of reflect on it
- 26:59Speaker 10: and try to get a little bit better for next year.
- 27:02Speaker 10: The good news is we've got to, you know, up
- 27:05Speaker 10: the team that played against Stanford in that match. I
- 27:08Speaker 10: think we've got five starters coming back, with the exception
- 27:13Speaker 10: of Togan. Yeah, and that's gonna be a big blow
- 27:16Speaker 10: because Togan was a really good doubles player. He was
- 27:20Speaker 10: kind of the hard and soul of our team this year.
- 27:23Speaker 10: Uh and uh, and you know he held down that
- 27:27Speaker 10: number five spot for us, and so that's that's a
- 27:31Speaker 10: tough one to overcome. But uh, you know, looking forward,
- 27:35Speaker 10: I'm pretty pleased about you know, what we've got coming
- 27:38Speaker 10: back and uh and the level of the team to
- 27:42Speaker 10: to get us ready for the next season.
- 27:46Speaker 3: So are you are you going to take it a
- 27:48Speaker 3: major this summer?
- 27:50Speaker 10: Oh yeah, yeah, I'm probably gonna go over the French
- 27:53Speaker 10: Open and watch the juniors, but also watch quite a
- 27:59Speaker 10: few of our guys will be in the tournament. I
- 28:01Speaker 10: think we'll have Patrick Gibson and Ballantin Basho and Arthur
- 28:05Speaker 10: Renderdeck playing in singles, and Austin Kritcheck and Jackson Withrow
- 28:09Speaker 10: and maybe another guy or two in doubles. We're gonna
- 28:12Speaker 10: have a bunch of guys playing there. And uh, and
- 28:17Speaker 10: maybe another guy or two in the quality. And so yeah,
- 28:21Speaker 10: I'm gonna go over there and support them and and
- 28:23Speaker 10: watch them and then watch the juniors, and probably will
- 28:26Speaker 10: do the same at Wimbledon as well.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I say this every year because I don't think about
- 28:32Speaker 1: it in time, but I'd sure like to go with
- 28:34Speaker 1: you one of these days.
- 28:36Speaker 10: Yeah, it's a great trip. I mean, it really is
- 28:38Speaker 10: an amazing Those are amazing venues and obviously iconic city. Yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 10: and it's worth the world of tennis decend, you know,
- 28:50Speaker 10: for two weeks at the French at Wimbledon, and then
- 28:54Speaker 10: obviously at the US Open a little bit later in
- 28:56Speaker 10: the in the summer. But they're all amazing turn I'm
- 29:00Speaker 10: a totally different atmospheres and incredible tennis and athleticism and
- 29:07Speaker 10: drama to watch.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Hey, I wouldn't I wouldn't have to wear a tie
- 29:11Speaker 1: or dress up anything if I went to Wimbledon, would I.
- 29:15Speaker 10: Well, if you wanted to sit, you know, in the
- 29:17Speaker 10: Royal Box.
- 29:19Speaker 3: To dress up, I don't think they'd let me in there.
- 29:23Speaker 10: Probably you probably couldn't wear your fishing hat.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Well shoot, okay, well I'll have to rethink that whole thing.
- 29:31Speaker 4: Then.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I always appreciate your time. Steve, thank you very much
- 29:35Speaker 1: for doing this every spring.
- 29:37Speaker 10: Yeah, my pleasure, and thanks again to the twelfth Man
- 29:41Speaker 10: and all of our fans out there for supporting us.
- 29:44Speaker 10: And we'll look to be even bigger and better this
- 29:48Speaker 10: next year. So excited about excited about the future of
- 29:52Speaker 10: Aggie Tennis.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Steve Dinton joins us during the Year of Tennis. Steve again,
- 29:58Speaker 1: thank you, and I have a great number, Steve didn't.

- 32:55Speaker 15: You're the Pittsburgh Steelers. They've been on this carousel of
- 33:00Speaker 15: consignment quarterbacks for a while now. I think we collectively
- 33:04Speaker 15: just need to acquiesce and look at what they are
- 33:06Speaker 15: as an organization. You're not where you once were. We
- 33:09Speaker 15: need to stop giving them the benefit of the doubt
- 33:11Speaker 15: and assigning their history to present.

- 33:48Speaker 3: You never even get that out.
- 33:52Speaker 13: And the.
- 33:56Speaker 5: Whole time.
- 33:59Speaker 12: Still musics.
- 34:16Speaker 17: Welcome into the High School Report. I'm Kayler Brapley, and
- 34:19Speaker 17: today we are jumping out to the playerifs fun center
- 34:21Speaker 17: phone line to visit with the head coach of the
- 34:24Speaker 17: Brinham Cubs baseball team, mister Chase Wheaton, coach, thanks for
- 34:28Speaker 17: joining me again.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for having me, Kevin.
- 34:30Speaker 17: A great regular season for your Cubs, locking down the
- 34:34Speaker 17: District seventeen championship. Clinched it pretty early, relatively speaking, with
- 34:39Speaker 17: pretty much the next four teams in the standings being
- 34:42Speaker 17: very close to each other and kind of cannibalizing themselves
- 34:45Speaker 17: a little bit there and taking themselves out of that
- 34:47Speaker 17: district race. And your Cub's doing a great job of
- 34:49Speaker 17: winning the games that you're supposed to win. And taking
- 34:52Speaker 17: on that district championship. So congratulations on that. What were
- 34:55Speaker 17: some of the keys to what great year y'all had?
- 34:58Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you, And you know, for the most part,
- 35:02Speaker 4: especially in district, we got great starts from Luke Hardy
- 35:06Speaker 4: and Braden Steel all year long, and then Dawson Tom
- 35:10Speaker 4: was really strong on the back end, and then we
- 35:13Speaker 4: just had a veteran group that has just gotten a
- 35:18Speaker 4: lot stronger, a lot more physical and handled the bat
- 35:20Speaker 4: really well and we were able to hit a lot
- 35:23Speaker 4: of home runs, a lot of extra base hits, and
- 35:27Speaker 4: really did a good job of getting pitchers to shrink
- 35:30Speaker 4: the strike zone and throw it over the big part
- 35:32Speaker 4: of the plate and getting some good swings off and
- 35:34Speaker 4: making it really tough on opposing pitchers, and then playing
- 35:38Speaker 4: clean defense, you know, taking care of the baseball, playing
- 35:41Speaker 4: catch at a really high level. And when this group
- 35:44Speaker 4: does that, they put themselves in a position to win games,
- 35:46Speaker 4: and they won a lot of them this year.
- 35:49Speaker 17: The first round of the playoffs last weekend against Dayton,
- 35:52Speaker 17: getting the series win in three games. So what were
- 35:58Speaker 17: some of the takeaways from the Bier throw.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Well, I thought we got a really good start by
- 36:03Speaker 4: Luke Cardy, once again. I think the inning that they
- 36:06Speaker 4: scored four, we had a strikeout pass ball. We have
- 36:10Speaker 4: actually gave him four outside inning and they got two
- 36:12Speaker 4: big swings off The wind was blowing out to right
- 36:15Speaker 4: that night and they hit two backside home runs seven
- 36:18Speaker 4: to four. I didn't feel like it really felt as
- 36:21Speaker 4: close as the score. Well, I felt like we put
- 36:24Speaker 4: them away a lot early and the score made it
- 36:25Speaker 4: look kind of close. But for the most part, there
- 36:28Speaker 4: wasn't threats on their end. Outside of that inning. I
- 36:31Speaker 4: thought our hitters did a really good job of getting
- 36:34Speaker 4: after a good senior pitcher who had a lot of innings,
- 36:37Speaker 4: who's going to play at the next level at Angelina. Unfortunately,
- 36:42Speaker 4: in that game are kind of our spark plug, our catalyst,
- 36:45Speaker 4: Dalton Hard, our shortstop leadoff, goes down with the overthrown
- 36:50Speaker 4: at first base. He's making a turn to second and
- 36:53Speaker 4: his knees buckles gives out and we've confirmed that that's
- 36:56Speaker 4: a c L partial PCL, so he's gonna have to
- 37:00Speaker 4: surgery as early as next week. Definitely a bloat to us,
- 37:04Speaker 4: So we were kind of reeling after canceling the game Friday,
- 37:07Speaker 4: going into Saturday, moving some guys around changing the lineup around,
- 37:11Speaker 4: and ultimately it was just a dog fight and Braydon
- 37:15Speaker 4: Steel gave us a good sort Senior Dawson Tom, who's
- 37:18Speaker 4: been nails for us his whole career here, was just
- 37:22Speaker 4: unbelievable in game three, and we were able to get
- 37:26Speaker 4: a couple of big hits and make a couple of
- 37:28Speaker 4: big plays and got out of there with the series victory.
- 37:31Speaker 17: So moving into this week's matchup tonight at seven o'clock,
- 37:35Speaker 17: going to be kicking off the series in the area
- 37:37Speaker 17: around against Portnitchus Groves. This team very very solid, the
- 37:44Speaker 17: higher seed out of District nineteen, and you know, I
- 37:47Speaker 17: think they're one of the top ranked teams in five A.
- 37:51Speaker 17: Soy with this new playoff format splitting it into divisions
- 37:55Speaker 17: one and two, I feel like we see a lot
- 37:58Speaker 17: more of these early round heavyweight matchups like this. So
- 38:02Speaker 17: what are your thoughts on that facing a team of
- 38:05Speaker 17: this caliber in just the second round of the playoffs.
- 38:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a tough draw. You said it. I guess
- 38:11Speaker 4: sometimes it could work out in your favor this time
- 38:13Speaker 4: that does not from the standpoint that you're getting the
- 38:16Speaker 4: first place team from a very solid district over there,
- 38:20Speaker 4: sweeping Neederland, Barbara's Hill, Baytown, Sterling. They're a good team
- 38:25Speaker 4: and they're a top ten five a team. Their records
- 38:29Speaker 4: twenty seven and four something like that. They are number one.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Is as good of a high school arm as you'll see.
- 38:37Speaker 4: And Eli curtis committed Arison the state. He's got a
- 38:41Speaker 4: handful of scouts at all his starts does a really
- 38:45Speaker 4: good job for him and they're a really confident team
- 38:47Speaker 4: behind him. Their number two, Lunchford, is also a big,
- 38:52Speaker 4: big kid, ultra competitive, really good high school arm as well.
- 38:56Speaker 4: So they're a solid team. It's a tough draw, but
- 38:59Speaker 4: you know, we feel good about our starting pitching. It's
- 39:03Speaker 4: the next man up mentality as far as replacing Dalton
- 39:06Speaker 4: in the lineup, and I think everybody kind of feels
- 39:09Speaker 4: that they've got to pull a little extra harder or
- 39:14Speaker 4: you know, fill some gaps that the holes that Dalton
- 39:17Speaker 4: leaves within our lineup and leadership and you know, getting
- 39:22Speaker 4: off the Dayton Series and being able to kind of
- 39:25Speaker 4: decompress and let that think in. I think our guys
- 39:28Speaker 4: are extremely focused and ready to play, and they know
- 39:30Speaker 4: exactly what they're they're walking into with port Nature's Night
- 39:34Speaker 4: and their ice, and we are definitely looking forward to
- 39:37Speaker 4: the challenge.
- 39:38Speaker 17: So when a team has, you know, two absolute studs
- 39:41Speaker 17: like that on the mound, what does victory look like
- 39:44Speaker 17: for your cubs? What's it going to take to win
- 39:46Speaker 17: this series?
- 39:47Speaker 4: Well, I've told the guys we feel pretty good about
- 39:50Speaker 4: our starters as well, and they've been good for us
- 39:52Speaker 4: all year long. I think we're fully capabable of beating
- 39:57Speaker 4: these guys in a two to one, three to two
- 39:59Speaker 4: ball game with hardy on the mound, and so you know,
- 40:03Speaker 4: if that's what it takes, and that's what it takes.
- 40:05Speaker 4: But you know, this group has also shown the ability
- 40:08Speaker 4: to get after really high level arms and collegiate level
- 40:12Speaker 4: arms that have good fastballs. So they're a confident group.
- 40:16Speaker 4: We've built a tough schedule over the years that has
- 40:19Speaker 4: allowed them to see just about every kind of high
- 40:21Speaker 4: school pitcher and so it won't be anything that they
- 40:24Speaker 4: haven't seen before. Is Curtis good. Absolutely, he's a solid
- 40:29Speaker 4: pitcher and he's got a really bright future. But our
- 40:33Speaker 4: guys are a confident group, and like I said, we
- 40:36Speaker 4: are excited about the challenge.
- 40:38Speaker 17: All right, coach, Well, appreciate your time today and good
- 40:40Speaker 17: luck tonight and the rest of the weekend against PMNG.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I appreciate it, Caleb, thank you.
- 40:46Speaker 17: The High School Report is brought to you by Gilmour
- 40:47Speaker 17: Electric Express, Chicken Express and Club car Wash.
- 40:53Speaker 18: Sure the flowers are pretty and the warmer weather's nice,
- 40:56Speaker 18: but some things aren't so great about spring, running noses,
- 40:59Speaker 18: a gis sneezing, and oh, by the way, you've got
- 41:01Speaker 18: a whole bunch of cleaning to do. But let's start
- 41:04Speaker 18: with cleaning something easy like your vehicle at Club car Wash.

- 43:48Speaker 20: The Houston Astros were blown out by the Dodgers in
- 43:51Speaker 20: the rubber match of the three game series, dropping the
- 43:53Speaker 20: finale by a score of twelve to two. The Astros
- 43:55Speaker 20: took an early one nothing lead on a Bryce matthew
- 43:57Speaker 20: solo home run in the first, but from there Astro
- 44:00Speaker 20: starter Lance McCullers Junior really struggled. The Dodgers plated six
- 44:03Speaker 20: runs in the first three innings and chase McCullers out
- 44:05Speaker 20: of the game after just two and two thirds. Four
- 44:07Speaker 20: more runs in the next two innings off Astros relievers
- 44:10Speaker 20: put the game out of reach. As Houston has not
- 44:12Speaker 20: lost its last four series, Manager Joe spot a postgame.

- 45:44Speaker 1: This morning, I was able to catch up with Bob
- 45:47Speaker 1: Herrick the Golfer, a golf writer for Sports Illustrated. His
- 45:53Speaker 1: book is called Tiger the Jack the Great Debate, and
- 46:00Speaker 1: I don't think I think the title says pretty much
- 46:04Speaker 1: all of it.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Here's my conversation earlier today with Bob Harry.
- 46:09Speaker 13: Bob, how are you, I'm good. How are you doing
- 46:13Speaker 13: this morning?
- 46:13Speaker 3: I'm great?
- 46:14Speaker 1: It's great to catch up with you again. I've read
- 46:17Speaker 1: about half so far. I didn't get the book in time,
- 46:20Speaker 1: but I really really enjoy it. One of the several
- 46:24Speaker 1: things have stood out. First of all, the idea of
- 46:27Speaker 1: major championships and what was a major and you talk
- 46:32Speaker 1: about it really didn't coalesce till Ernie won at Cherry
- 46:36Speaker 1: Hills in nineteen sixty.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Am I right about that?
- 46:40Speaker 13: Yeah, it's a great point. It's I do get into that.
- 46:43Speaker 9: And you know, it was sort of in the fifties
- 46:48Speaker 9: people started talking about the four Majors as we know
- 46:51Speaker 9: them now. Gene Sarazen had done that in a book
- 46:56Speaker 9: that he wrote in nineteen fifty.
- 46:59Speaker 22: You know, he was the first.
- 47:00Speaker 9: Player to win what's called the career Grand Slam, but
- 47:05Speaker 9: he didn't know that he had done it at the
- 47:07Speaker 9: time because he won the second Masters and nobody was
- 47:11Speaker 9: talking about it like that. But around you know, by
- 47:14Speaker 9: around the nineteen fifties it started to gain traction. And
- 47:18Speaker 9: but Arnold Palmer was really the first one who put
- 47:21Speaker 9: the four together and said, hey, this can be a
- 47:25Speaker 9: modern Grand Slam, like nobody had really thought of it
- 47:29Speaker 9: in those terms.
- 47:30Speaker 13: The Bobby Jones Grand Slam of nineteen thirty, which was
- 47:34Speaker 13: the two Opens and the two Amateurs was was was
- 47:37Speaker 13: the standard, but the game evolved beyond that, Like amateurs
- 47:43Speaker 13: sort of lost some of their standing, and you know,
- 47:48Speaker 13: professional players couldn't play in those amateur events, so it evolved.
- 47:52Speaker 9: And and Arnold was the first one along with a
- 47:55Speaker 9: writer named Bob Drumm, who kind of put the idea
- 47:57Speaker 9: together of hey, if I win the Masters, US Open,
- 48:02Speaker 9: British Open and PGA, that would be a modern Slam.
- 48:06Speaker 13: And that took hold and that was nineteen sixty.
- 48:10Speaker 9: He won the first two and then he went to
- 48:12Speaker 9: Saint Andrews and he and he finished a shot back.
- 48:16Speaker 13: And that was his first British Open.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Yeah, playing the way open, Playing the Open in those days,
- 48:21Speaker 1: I mean, guys didn't go over there and do that
- 48:23Speaker 1: mostly from the US did they.
- 48:25Speaker 9: It was a money loser mostly, you know, the the
- 48:28Speaker 9: you know, the the fields were not very strong. And
- 48:32Speaker 9: Ben Hogan went to the Open once and won it
- 48:34Speaker 9: one time.
- 48:35Speaker 12: That was it.
- 48:36Speaker 13: He never went He never went back, you know.
- 48:39Speaker 9: And so and even into the sixties and even as
- 48:43Speaker 9: late as like the nineteen eighties, Curtis Strange won the
- 48:45Speaker 9: US Open it didn't go to the British Open like
- 48:48Speaker 9: he I think he regrets that, but it was just
- 48:51Speaker 9: sort of you know, again, I think there wasn't always
- 48:55Speaker 9: the emphasis on the majors at every point in time.
- 48:59Speaker 9: When Tiger came long, the majors were a huge deal,
- 49:02Speaker 9: and he knew how big they were, and that's why
- 49:05Speaker 9: I think the pressure to do it was harder. You know,
- 49:08Speaker 9: Jack even himself is admitted, I didn't really know that
- 49:11Speaker 9: I was chasing anybody. Yes, I I just knew these
- 49:14Speaker 9: were the biggest tournaments and I was trying to win them.
- 49:17Speaker 9: He didn't realize he had passed Jones's record or Walter
- 49:20Speaker 9: Hagen's record until he was told, and.
- 49:23Speaker 1: The US Amateur was considered a major for a long time.
- 49:26Speaker 9: Correct, Well, I mean in some way, in some places
- 49:30Speaker 9: it still is like Jack wonders, how did I go
- 49:32Speaker 9: from twenty to eighteen?
- 49:33Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, you know so.
- 49:35Speaker 9: But when he got to Jones is credited with thirteen
- 49:40Speaker 9: if you give him his amateurs. When Jack got to
- 49:43Speaker 9: fourteen with the amateurs, that was that sort of became
- 49:46Speaker 9: a talking point. It also happened to be that when
- 49:49Speaker 9: he you know, if you take if you take away
- 49:52Speaker 9: the amateurs. It was his twelfth major. Well, that passed
- 49:57Speaker 9: Walter Hagen. So like at that time, though Jack will
- 50:02Speaker 9: tell you nobody ever, I never was thinking I'm chasing
- 50:05Speaker 9: Walter Hagen. Yes, no, So whereas obviously every time Tiger
- 50:09Speaker 9: won a major, Hey, well now you've got to Lee Trevino,
- 50:13Speaker 9: you know, now you got to Nick Faldle.
- 50:15Speaker 13: Oh, now you've matched Arnold Palmer. Now you've matched Tom Watson.
- 50:19Speaker 13: So that was very, very part of the Tiger pursuit
- 50:23Speaker 13: that might not have been there for Jack. You know.
- 50:26Speaker 3: The The other issue was, hey, could you do it
- 50:29Speaker 3: in one year?
- 50:29Speaker 1: Right?
- 50:30Speaker 3: I mean, drum I think talk to Arnie about doing that?
- 50:33Speaker 13: Did he not? Sixty one?
- 50:35Speaker 9: That sort of became a thing like can you win
- 50:37Speaker 9: all four in the same yeah, and any time any
- 50:41Speaker 9: but you know the truth of the matter. Then the
- 50:43Speaker 9: order was the Master's US Open. Nobody won the first
- 50:46Speaker 9: two in a year until Jack did it in seventy two, yes,
- 50:50Speaker 9: so like and then and then after that, nobody did
- 50:53Speaker 9: it until Tiger did it in.
- 50:57Speaker 13: Two thousand and two.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and then okay, sorry about that, now that's fine.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Jordan Speith did it in twenty fifteen, right.
- 51:06Speaker 9: Yes, yes, he did. And he went to Saint Andrews
- 51:09Speaker 9: with a great chance to win that one.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Yep.
- 51:11Speaker 9: You know, he missed a playoff by a shot. That's
- 51:14Speaker 9: you know, that's a great underrated accomplishment. And then he
- 51:17Speaker 9: he finished second at the PGA twenty fifteen was in
- 51:19Speaker 9: a remarkable year for him. You know, I we'll see,
- 51:25Speaker 9: We'll see with Rory this year if he you know,
- 51:27Speaker 9: obviously next week is the PGA Championship.
- 51:30Speaker 13: You know, I imagine if he were to win that. Yeah,
- 51:33Speaker 13: how all of a sudden, that ratch up, that that
- 51:36Speaker 13: that type of thing.
- 51:37Speaker 1: And as you mentioned, Nicholas didn't deal with that kind
- 51:40Speaker 1: of scrutiny when he was winning those majors, did he.
- 51:45Speaker 13: Yeah, I don't think at the same level. There just
- 51:47Speaker 13: wasn't the same level of media.
- 51:48Speaker 3: Yes, you know there was.
- 51:49Speaker 13: There was There was no cable TV, there was no Internet.
- 51:53Speaker 9: He dealt with the written press, which was a lot,
- 51:57Speaker 9: but you know it was like, you know, you couldn't
- 51:59Speaker 9: read somebody via text.
- 52:02Speaker 13: You know, he wasn't doing you know, endless, endless interviews.
- 52:06Speaker 13: Even though Jack was very very good with the media.
- 52:08Speaker 1: You know, one of the things that really another thing
- 52:11Speaker 1: that stood out that I had forgotten completely. Is in
- 52:14Speaker 1: nineteen ninety eight, at the age of fifty eight, Jack
- 52:19Speaker 1: on the back nine on Sunday was right there forgetting
- 52:23Speaker 1: another green jacket, wasn't he?
- 52:24Speaker 3: And he ended up beating Tiger.
- 52:28Speaker 9: I love the fact that Jack, at age fifty eight,
- 52:31Speaker 9: a year after Tiger won the Masters by twelve, finished
- 52:35Speaker 9: it ahead of Tiger at the Masters.
- 52:37Speaker 13: And he likes that too.
- 52:40Speaker 9: I mean, Jack down plays it and he'll say, well,
- 52:43Speaker 9: I didn't win, yeah, but I'm sorry. That was an amazing,
- 52:46Speaker 9: amazing accomplishment. It was a you know, in some some
- 52:50Speaker 9: places people have to remember, well who actually did win.
- 52:53Speaker 9: It was Markomera. But but Jack tied for six, and
- 52:58Speaker 9: you know he was he was. He was right there
- 53:01Speaker 9: a shot or two back during that final round, and
- 53:05Speaker 9: he just didn't quite have the same magic that he
- 53:07Speaker 9: had in eighty six when he won. But man, it
- 53:10Speaker 9: was it was great. He played the final round with
- 53:12Speaker 9: Ernie Els, you know, Tiger was was was in a
- 53:16Speaker 9: group ahead of him and and Tiger obviously finished. You know,
- 53:21Speaker 9: it's the only time they played in a major together
- 53:24Speaker 9: as pros where Jack finished ahead of Tiger, which is
- 53:27Speaker 9: I mean, come on, he was fifty eight is incredible accomplishment.
- 53:31Speaker 9: And so you know, it was that that's a that's
- 53:34Speaker 9: a you know, I recount that in the book, and
- 53:37Speaker 9: it was it's a great it's a great sort of
- 53:41Speaker 9: you know, a bullet for for Jack in his career,
- 53:45Speaker 9: that that he was able to beat Tiger and what
- 53:48Speaker 9: you know, Tiger was twenty two at the time.
- 53:50Speaker 13: It is incredible.
- 53:51Speaker 3: I'll end with this.
- 53:52Speaker 1: One of the more remarkable stats to me is, of
- 53:56Speaker 1: course the eighteen majors, but nineteen runners up. Nineteen times
- 54:02Speaker 1: he was a second place finisher in a major.
- 54:06Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean Jack could have easily won twenty five majors. Yeah,
- 54:09Speaker 13: you know, that's what's that's what's remarkable.
- 54:11Speaker 9: I mean, I think we can look at Tiger and
- 54:13Speaker 9: go because he won fifteen and because he missed so
- 54:17Speaker 9: many due to injury or personal issues. You know, he
- 54:21Speaker 9: could have gotten to eighteen or twenty. But I mean,
- 54:24Speaker 9: so could Jack have gotten to twenty or twenty five?
- 54:28Speaker 9: You know, I mean nineteen seconds he lost one in
- 54:31Speaker 9: a playoff. He had incredible duels with Tom Watson and Trevino.
- 54:37Speaker 13: You know, he there's a couple early on he felt
- 54:41Speaker 13: he gave away.
- 54:42Speaker 9: You know, you know, Tig Tiger felt he gave a
- 54:45Speaker 9: few away too, sure, but it is remarkable to think
- 54:48Speaker 9: Tiger had seven seconds in majors.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Yep.
- 54:52Speaker 9: Jack nineteen and one of them that was at age twenty,
- 54:55Speaker 9: when he was an amateur. He finished second Arnold Palmer
- 54:58Speaker 9: at Cherry Hills playing with Ben Hogan the final thirty
- 55:01Speaker 9: six holes. I mean that in and of itself is
- 55:04Speaker 9: an incredible, you know, kind of factoid that that that's
- 55:09Speaker 9: really interesting at age twenty. I mean Ben Hogan paraphrase said, hey,
- 55:13Speaker 9: if if the kid I played with today had any brains,
- 55:17Speaker 9: want he'd want.
- 55:18Speaker 1: The book is called The book is called Tiger v.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Jack Goff's Great Debate. Bob Harrig is the author. Great book. Bob,
- 55:25Speaker 1: thank you so much for the time.
- 55:27Speaker 13: Appreciate you having me. Thank you very much.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Yep Uh Tiger v.
- 55:33Speaker 10: Jack.
- 55:34Speaker 1: When it's really cool when you think about Jack playing
- 55:40Speaker 1: with Ben Hogan, I mean, it's it's just crazy some
- 55:44Speaker 1: of this.
- 55:44Speaker 10: You know, how the.
- 55:46Speaker 1: Generations in golf overlap because you could still play golf
- 55:54Speaker 1: pretty well. I think Nicholas proved in your forties and
- 55:58Speaker 1: even into your fifties. Phil has proved that or did
- 56:02Speaker 1: prove that, probably not anymore. Brass's Valley Flooring and Designer,
